It’s occurred to me recently that all of my favourite media just fully advocate for indulging the tiniest specs of joy you can ever find. The films and TV shows and books that just completely accept that life is meaningless and maybe at the end of the day that’s okay. Life has whatever meaning you give it and, sometimes, when things are really bad, it’s those tiny joys that keep you going.
On top of this, the fact that humans have thought about it so much that they’ve given it a name- Absurdism- makes me feel so much less alone. No matter how alone we feel somebody gets it, even if that’s just one person. And if you can’t find that person in your day to day relationships you can find it in media. The arts unite us by sharing the shared existence of all humans, especially the tiny bits that we don’t otherwise discuss.

My mom got The Midnight Library for me for my birthday and she has no idea what it's about. Like "hello daughter, are you having fun reading your book?" And she doesn't know that the main character is severely depressed and her cat died and she only discovered the midnight library because she was about to commit suicide, and the book is about how she lives these alternate lives and finds that she's never fulfilled (I'm only halfway through no spoilers) like she knows I'm grown up and thrive in angst but I don't think it's really dawned on her just how much I do.

“There was absolutely nothing wrong with this life, but she felt inside her a craving for other things, other lives, other possibilities. She felt like she was still in the air, not ready to land.”

"If you aim to be something you are not, you will always fail. Aim to be you. Aim to look and act and think like you. Aim to be the truest version of you. Embrace that you-ness. Endorse it. Love it. Work hard at it. And don't give a second thought when people mock it or ridicule it. Most gossip is envy in disguise."
Matt Haig, The Midnight Library.

"Somewhere among the infinite shelves of the midnight library is a book where you and I never part, and for that I will dwell in the anguish of our story."
