Chicken Soup for Carmy
Tumblr media
⚠️ Content Warning ⚠️ harsh language, sexism and violence in one scene (not from Carmy). Hurt/comfort, fluff.
A/N: I’m literally feral for this man. I’m sick atm and I started thinking about taking care of Carmy while I was making chicken soup. Bonus combo with Carmy protecting you from an asshole customer. Not proofread bc my brain is rotting. Plz be nice this is my first time posting a fic 🥺
-
It was cold. You braced yourself against the harsh Chicago wind as you made your way briskly down the street. After a late night phone call from your brother sent you into a spiral, you couldn’t sleep. You’d been tossing and turning all night until finally, at 4am, you flung off the covers and got dressed. It wasn’t a surprise that you’d come here. This place consumed all your mind and your heart since you started working here a few months ago. You used your key to unlock the door in the alley, sighing with relief as the warmth of The Beef welcomed you inside. It was quiet, the lights were down, it was peaceful. You slipped off your sneakers trading in your kitchen clogs and tucked your things safely away in your locker. You tied your handkerchief on your head as you moved. It was so comforting, the routine of The Beef’s prep work. You felt so at home, moving from the prep area to the walk in, diligently beginning the tasks that didn’t need to be started for a few more hours. He would understand. You thought to yourself as you began to prepare fresh stock for the day. He was a man after your own heart, your boss, Carmen Berzatto.
Avoidant, chaotically emotional, one wrong thing away from a complete meltdown, that you both disguised as workaholic tendencies. As you finely chopped onions, your mind quieted. Everything was shut out except for the task at hand. Your brother’s angry voice on the phone accusing you: “you never come home! You don’t even care about us! You can’t take come take care of your own mother?!” was drowned out by the rhythmic pound of your knife on the cutting board. You were in the zone.
Until a voice startled you out of your bubble. “Chef?” You jolted, looking up at the man before you. Carmy’s hair was messier than usual, the bags under his eyes were deeper and more purple. His lips were parted with each soft breath he took. He gave you a quizzical look. “What are you doing here?”
“I uh-” your mouth felt dry and you tripped over your words, as usual when he set those intense blue eyes on you. “I couldn’t sleep.”
Carmy nodded, not pushing you any further. All he said before moving toward the office was a simple: “Heard, Chef.”
You watched him go, noticing the slump of his shoulders and the labor of his normally spry step. There was no mistaking it, Carmen was sick. You stared at the office door for a long moment before you made up your mind.
You set a heavy bottomed pot on the stove with some olive oil. Your hands moved with well practiced efficiency as you chopped garlic and onions, celery and carrots. The garlic and onions went in first. Then the celery. A sprig of thyme and a dash of white wine. While that simmered you quickly seared some chicken breast and chopped it into perfectly bite sized pieces. All into the pot with chicken stock and water, tightly covered to develop the flavors. Next came the pasta. You cracked eggs into the well of flour, mixing and kneading until it became a smooth golden dough. You carefully, tenderly rolled the dough and cut it into thick, short noodles. A bath in hot water to cook, then they too joined the pot. In no time at all, you were ladling a generous portion into a bowl. You set a toasted piece of chibatta on the side, grabbed a spoon, and took a deep breath in an attempt to settle your nerves. Softly, you knocked on the office door.
“Yeah?” His voice responded.
“Chef?” You entered, nervous. Words failing you as they so often did in his presence, you set the bowl before him. Carmy’s eyes widened. The aroma made his mouth water. He looked to you, gaze softening. “You made me chicken soup?”
Your cheeks grew warm. “Y-yeah, I mean chicken soup always makes me feel better when I’m sick.”
Carmy couldn’t believe you. You noticed? He smiled at you. You were so beautiful. You were always so confident and sure on the line, delegating with efficiency, respect, and authority. He had hired you the second you stepped into The Beef. Your resume was impressive but there was something in the way you carried yourself that truly earned the golden reputation you had in the culinary industry. But you were different with him, in the occasional moments like this where it was just you and him. Shy, almost bashful, gentle, and soft. He loved it. He wanted more of it. He lifted the spoon, bringing a bite to his lips.
“Gotta get a little of everything.” You muttered, eagerly awaiting his response.
Carmy shot you a sideways smile. It was good. No, it was better than good. The warm broth slid down his throat and each bite exploded with a depth of flavor he couldn’t believe. It was pure comfort. It reminded him of being a little kid staying home sick from school. Curled up on the couch while Jerry Springer played, eating crackers and ginger ale until his mom would bring a bowl of chicken noodle soup. But this soup, your soup, was more than that. People always talk about cooking with love but he swore he could taste it. Each ingredient had been so carefully handled. Perfectly chopped vegetables, moist and flavorful chicken. The warm feeling in his chest grew as he inspected the bowl.
“Did uh, did you make this pasta fresh?” He asked, eyeing you.
“Yeah, it’s better that way.” You blushed.
“Thank you, chef.” He said. “It’s really, really good.” Carmy looked down, suddenly feeling heavy. The fear of closeness set into him and all he could think about was how he’d fuck this up. “You-you didn’t have to make this for me.”
“Oh, it’s okay!” You insisted. “It was no big deal.” You began to leave, giving him one last truthful smile. “I like taking care of you.”
“I like taking care of you.” Your words rattled through Carmy’s mind all day. Throughout all of lunch, prep, and dinner he couldn’t stop thinking about what you’d said. The soup you had made was the first thing he’d eaten in too long. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had cooked for him and you’d just done it because you noticed he wasn’t feeling well. No motive, no games, just tender love and concern.
Love.
Carmy shook his head to try and shake the thought from his mind. No, no, no there was no way you actually cared about him. Not like that. You were just being nice.
That’s just who you are; nice. You were always so kind. The way you’d help Marcus workshop pastries, the way you’d make Tina laugh and listen to her talk about whatever trouble Louis had gotten in, how you’d encourage Sydney and remind her that she can do this. Even the way you’d throw snark right back at Richie or how’d you’d always set aside a portion of Family for Fak and Sugar, even Pete. You were always thinking of others. Carmy wasn’t special.
Yeah. Not special.
Carmy insisted the thought as he scrubbed the grill. Not special. Not special. Not special.
“Carmy?” There you were. You were always there. You had a thick denim jacket on, bag on your shoulder, knit beanie pulled down over your hair. Your brow furrowed at the sight of him. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah.” Carmy shook his head. “I’m fine… you uh- you heading out?”
You shrugged, hoisting your bag a little higher on your shoulder and eyeing him skeptically. “Yeah. Are you?”
“Yeah, in a bit.”
You chuckled, more exasperated than humorous. “No.”
“What?” Carmy asked, confused.
“No, you’re leaving too.” You insisted. You were feeling bold. Months of long looks and his hand on your lower back every time he passed you had culminated tonight.
You had taken over the front for Richie while he ducked out to take a call from his daughter. You’d insisted. It was slammed for dinner but everything was going fairly smooth until an irate customer approached you.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” He’d asked, slamming his plate onto the counter.
“Excuse me?”
“I mean are you retarded or something?” He continued. You were stunned into silence. You had never had anyone speak to you like that. “How hard is it to make a fucking sandwich? I know your tits are bigger than your brain but Jesus fucking Christ it’s not hard!”
“I-I…” you were shaking. “I’m sorry that you’re not satisfied, sir. If you like, we can-”
“Not satisfied?!” He screamed. “How can I be satisfied with this piece of shit!”
He hurled the sandwich at you. It hit you in the chest, toppings and sauce splattering everywhere. Before you even knew what was happening, a blur of messy curls shot past you. Carmy launched over the counter, tackling the man. His fist collided with the man’s face over and over while Richie and Fak rushed after him. There was a cacophony of yells as Richie pulled Carmy back. “Get your girl!” Richie yelled. “Cousin! Go get your girl!”
Fak and Richie dragged the man out and threw him into the street. Carmy’s hands grasped your cheeks.
“Hey, hey, are you okay?” He wiped the sauce splatters from your brow. “Look at me.”
Carmy burned with anger as he watched you shake. Your white shirt and blue apron were covered in the sandwich. He imagined what you would do for him if he was in your position. How you’d care for him, how you’d tend to him… so he tried to do what you would. Gently he guided you to your feet and wrapped his arm around your waist. He practically carried you to his office where he sat you on the couch and quickly went to grab a clean shirt from his own locker. You were in the same place he left you when he returned. Carmy knelt before you, taking your face in his hands once more.
“Hey, it’s okay. It’s okay.” Tears welled in your eyes and you collapsed into his arms. He smoothed his hand over you back, repeating “it’s okay” over and over again. He felt like he was on fire. The feeling of you clinging to him, nuzzling your face into his neck, the smell of you, how you fit in his arms… it was too much. He wanted to run away and never speak to you again. He wanted to wake up next to you every morning for the rest of his life. He wanted to scream. He wanted to feel your lips against his. He wanted to find the piece of shit that yelled at you and rip him to pieces. He wanted your chicken soup every time he was sick.
All those feelings were closing in on Carmy once again as he stared at you across the kitchen. You still had his t shirt on. You were looking at him expectantly.
“Sorry, uh… what did you say?” Carmy’s voice was softer than he expected.
“I said I’ll walk home with you.”
“Oh, no that’s okay. Ive got to-“
“Carmy,” you stepped closer. Your voice was firm but so tender. “You need to get some rest. Come on, I won’t take no for an answer.”
He couldn’t help but smile back at you. “Alright…” he conceded.
The two of you braced yourselves against the cold and hurried down the sidewalk side by side. You argued about who would walk who home. Carmy insisted on walking you to your apartment but you protested on the grounds that he’d just go back to the restaurant once he dropped you off.
“Fine,” you gave in. “But you have to call me when you get to your place so I know you made it home!”
Carmy looked at the ground, smiling. The warmth in his chest from your soup was steadily turning into a molten pool of lava.
“Heard.” He grinned. You wanted to know he’d made it home. You wanted to make sure he rested. I like taking care of you.
“Well, I’m just up here.” Your voice stopped his thoughts from spiraling before it could even start. Carmy’s brow furrowed. “What?” You asked, puzzled by his sudden change in demeanor.
“You live over there?”
“Yeah? Like a block down?”
There was a beat of silence before Carmy let out a breathy laugh. “I live right there.” He pointed to the building on the other side of the street.
“No shit!” You laughed in earnest. Your hand came to rest on his arm. “Guess I’m gonna be walking you home more often.”
Carmy’s entire body was on fire. He could imagine the tingle of your soft hand on his skin through all the layers of clothing. He wanted to hold you close again like in his office, but this time you wouldn’t be crying. A deep pit opened in his stomach. How long before he made you cry? How long before he fucked it all up? Until you hated him and quit the restaurant and everything fell apart because he-
“Hey,” your voice. Always your voice that brought him back. When he looked over at you it was like everything but your face faded into a blurry background. You were all Carmy could see. “Do you want to come to mine? I haven’t eaten and I KNOW you haven’t either.”
Carmy’s heart fluttered. “O-okay.” He started, his confidence rising when he noticed your hand was still in his arm. “Only if you let me cook you something.”
“Ooh,” you smiled. “I’d never turn that down!”
Carmy chuckled, feeling lighter for the first time in years as he walked so close beside you that your shoulders brushed. “It won’t be as good as your chicken soup.”

“Hey Renjun, pass me that glass” you said as you wiped the thick tall glass completely dry before you put it back on the shelf behind you. You were moving mechanically at this point, the exhaustion of the long night at the bar taking over your entire body. It was 5 in the morning and you had just barely managed to kick out some of the remaining drunk nobodies who were so wasted, that their toxic-infused brains couldn’t even give them the signals to move their own bodies.
Working at the bar wasn’t your dream job but it’s not as if you had a better choice. It was either a bartender or a stripper. Both of them sounded equally bad, so you decided to opt for the slightly better one. If you could even say it like that.
It wasn’t a particularly ideal job but it was enough to get you by. It earned you enough money to buy you food and pay the rent at the motel you were staying at, it got you as many free drinks as you needed to help your mind escape from all your worries and you also got to meet some relatively cool people, so that was somewhat good. The working hours weren’t such a big of an issue either, you couldn’t really sleep anyway. So you were fine with it.
Most nights, the bar usually closed at around 3 am. There wasn’t a set rule on this; it usually depended on how many customers there were and how much they were drinking. Your boss had suggested that you shouldn’t keep the bar open all night long, so you kinda decided that it was best to close a few hours after midnight. You weren’t complaining about this though; the sooner it closed, the more time you’d have to get high with your co-worker Renjun at the alleyway behind the bar.
Unfortunately, tonight luck wasn’t on your side, as a group of friends kept on drinking more and more as the hours passed by, which meant that you and Renjun had to keep the bar open until later. You weren’t opposed to this idea, it only meant that you would earn a little bit more money. It was Renjun who started complaining, so he decided to take action into his own hands and practically dragged the drunks out of the bar.
This is how you ended up cleaning up the place this late, rather this early in the morning, with your co-worker. The two of you were too tired to speak, so neither of you made any efforts to spark up a conversation. You both just attended to your respective tasks, waiting for a specific somebody to show up.
Luck surely wasn’t on your side tonight. He would usually show up at around 3:30 am, right after the bar closed, and he would have all the stuff ready, just at the exact moment you needed it. Why was he late today?
It didn’t take a genius to understand that Renjun was clearly affected by the lack of the stuff. He moved around the place nervously, tugging at his hair and stomping his foot rhythmically. He was in a desperate need of it, and you would honestly lie to yourself if you said you didn’t need it half as much as Renjun did.
You put the last clean glass on the shelf behind you and went over to the storage room to grab a broom, so that you could clean the floor a bit while Renjun was still wiping the bar counters. As soon as you closed the door of the storage room, the little bell that hung above the bar’s front door rang with a tinkle and soon after it followed the sound of the so familiar footsteps you were waiting for all night.
“Hey kids, Santa’s here,” his voice resonated in the empty room as he waved a small transparent plastic bag that looked white because of its content. Renjun threw the handkerchief he was holding to the other side of the counter and dramatically jumped over it to go and hug the male who just entered. All of that just at the sight of the clear plastic bag with the snowy content.
“Mark, what took you so long my guy, I’m literally a dead man walking! Give this beauty to me,” Renjun exclaimed and snatched the plastic bag straight out of Mark’s hand. Mark smirked at what Renjun said and immediately started grinning at the sight of the boy’s eagerness.
Renjun went to sit on the bar stool closer to him and placed the bag on top of the counter he had just wiped clean. With slender fingers, he opened the plastic bag and dredged some of the content on the counter. With nervousness in his movements, he set the bag aside and shuffled through his back pocket to find his ID card. He started scattering the white dust all over the counter before he gathered all of it in a straight line with the help of his ID card. When he was satisfied with the result, he put his ID card back into his pocket, lowered his head to the level that his nose touched the cold surface of the counter, took a deep breath and snorted the entire line of crack, the product going straight up into his nostrils.
Renjun blinked several times before he slowly lifted his head. He scrunched his nose and wiped it with the back of his hand, his drowsy eyes looking surprisingly bright considering his state. “Man, whoever hasn’t done crack, never, they haven’t known the beauty of life yet” he chuckled. Mark smirked at Renjun’s comment and you couldn’t help but shake your head amusingly, a small smile creeping up at your face.
Renjun took the plastic bag with the rest of the cocaine and put it in his pocket. “This baby’s for me, thank you,” he amused and turned his heel towards the storage room. “Don’t come look for me, I’ll be right here. If I take too long to come out, then you should be concerned,” he said and closed the storage room door behind him; a scene that was surprisingly quite familiar to you.
You then set the broom down and walked towards Mark. “Hey” you whispered and Mark greeted you back in a low husky voice. “What took you so long? We were expecting you to come earlier” you asked him.
Mark shrugged and leaned his elbow against the counter. “I came by at our usual meeting hour and saw that you guys were still open. I couldn’t risk anyone seeing me so I decided to drop by later,” he said and you nodded in understanding.
“You do have more of those plastic bags on you, don’t you?” you asked him and he chuckled. “Of course I do, pretty. Let’s go outside and treat ourselves a bit, shall we?” he suggested and you nodded again, walking beside him towards the alleyway behind the bar.

The sky was painted in a deep hue of light blue, the moon and the stars still visible in the early morning sky, the sun barely seen in the horizon. You huffed in a sharp breath and put both your hands inside the pockets of your jeans as a reaction to the crispy air of the early morning, as you leaned your back on the damp wall behind you. Mark followed right after you and did the same. He shuffled into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a clear plastic bag full of crack, two crack pipes and a lighter. With almost automatic motions, he filled the pipes with crack and lit them up. He handed you one of them and kept one for himself.
You looked at the crack pipe as if it were an oasis in the middle of an infinite desert and you were so thirsty that your dried up mouth and throat were already relieved just by the sight of it. It only took you one second to react to the visual stimuli in front of you, quickly removing your right hand from your pocket and pulling the pipe straight from Mark’s hand. You brought the pipe to your lips, closed your eyes and took a long, slow drag. This was exactly what you needed.
You immediately felt your body relax and your mind clearing up. The moment you took the drag in, all your worries and problems completely vanished, even if it were only temporary. It was your brief sweet escape from the huge bitter world you were forced to live in.
A chilly breeze flew and you lifted your shoulders at the shivering sensation. Mark noticed immediately and he pulled you closer to him, removed one of the sleeves of his jacket and draped it over your shoulder, slinging his arm over it too.
"So," Mark spoke up, breaking the easing silence, "how was work today?"
You shrugged your shoulders. "Eh, like usual. Bunch of random people came in to drink their problems away and give us their money in exchange for adulterated alcohol. But Renjun had to drag some of them out of the bar, he literally grabbed them by their collar and feet and dragged them out of the store, you should have seen it. It was way too funny" you said and chuckled at the memory of the incident that happened a couple hours ago.
Mark giggled at your statement. "Damn," he dragged out the word, "too bad I missed that" he said and brought the crack pipe to his lips and squinted his eyes in pleasure and relief when he inhaled the poisonous content.
The next few minutes remained silent. There was only the sound of cars passing by being heard in the distance, it was probably people going to their early shifts at work. Normal types of work. Unlike the one you had, unlike the fate you brought upon yourself. That’s when the realization of your situation hit you like a truck. How could your family cut you off so easily when they found out that your dreams were different from what they were expecting of you? Were you just a tool for them? Another burden to take care of?
"You seem unhappy" Mark broke the silence. He was looking straight ahead in the distance, his eyes focusing on nothing in particular, probably because he was a bit too high to notice anything.
"Because I am" you responded to his comment, turning your head to look at him, searching for a sense of home into his soulless eyes.
Mark smirked and turned his attention to his heels. "You know, I wanna help. Right? You know that" he said with a raspy voice due to his sleeplessness. "But I don't think that feeding you drugs is any help" he now turned his head to look you in the eyes.
You pressed your lips into a thin line before you spoke. "I ask for the drugs Mark, you're not feeding me anything. It's my only escape, what else am I supposed to do?"
"I love you, Y/n" Mark said.
You winced at his confession and turned your head to avoid his gaze and fixating yours on the wide sky ahead of you.
"You're high, Mark. Cut the crap" you said in a bitter tone.
"Do you think I'm lying? I mean it, Y/n. I fucking love you, for whatever reason I do. And I care about you, so come with me and let's get out of this shitty town. I’m running out of time too, they’ll soon find where I live" Mark defended himself.
You turned again to meet his eyes. "And go where, Mark? Where the fuck should we go, huh? I don't have anything else to do other than this shitty job. I only keep it because I need the money to survive and it's the only way to keep myself sane. The people I used to call family kicked me out of my house and this was the easiest solution I could come up with before I would collapse entirely and before it would become too difficult to get back on my own feet. So what else is left for me to do?" you were clearly getting angrier now, but not at Mark. At yourself.
Mark's eyes darkened in sadness. "That's what I'm saying! You deserve better than this! Look, we have enough money. I do deals, but I know this is a job I can't have forever. I told you, I’m on thin ice. If I’m seen doing deals again, I’ll go to jail. You know I play the guitar, right? I can join a band or something. I know a friend downtown, he might be of help" he said.
"And you," he continued, "you're a great bartender. You could make a career out of it" he said.
You shut your eyelids and shook your head in denial. "It won't work out. I'm a mess, you're a mess. We can't make this work. It's impossible" you said, turning your head away.
Mark sat up straight and put his hand below your chin to turn your attention towards him. "Look at me, Y/n. We can make it work. Believe me. Trust me. I can't leave you living like this. And I certainly can't live a life like this myself. You're the only person I can make a change with. I need you" he said.
You gulped and stared right into his eyes, unable to form a response. "So you just need me as a means to get you out of town and help you start your magical new life. No thanks, Mark, I'll pass" you said and shoved his hand away to release his grip on you.
Mark became frustrated and moved to stand right in front of you. The half of his jacket that was wrapped around your shoulders dropped and it hung behind his back.
"Okay, look Y/n, you're tired and you're high. We'll have this conversation again in the morning" Mark said defeated.
Your energy was running low despite the boost of energy you had just inhaled, so you let yourself loose. "Let's get you back to your room. You need some rest. Come on, I'll drop you off" Mark suggested and you gave in to him completely.
You took a step towards him and stumbled a bit. Mark, with his rapid reflexes, caught you firmly by the forearm and guided you to his car. The last thing you remembered was the faint sound of the car door closing, before you were engulfed into pretty sleep.
Tumblr media
The next day you woke up to the sound of light guitar strumming from across the dim lit motel room. It was already past noon; the curtains were still drawn closed but the midday sun rays found their way in between the curtain folds and peaked through the dirty motel room windows to light up the inside of the place.
Mark was sitting on a wooden chair across the bed with a concentrated look on his face. With his jaw clenched and his cheekbones popping, he strum his fingers through the guitar strings, playing random chords in an attempt to create a melody he liked.
You shuffled between the bedsheets and stretched your body all over the old bed. A squeaky sound echoed in the room due to your sudden movement, which caught Mark’s attention. His strumming stopped abruptly and his head jolted up in surprise, his eyes opened wide and his lips dropped to a pout.
“Did I wake you up? Shit, I’m sorry” he whispered, trying to be as quiet as possible.
You rubbed your eyes to clear your vision and looked at him. “No, you didn’t. I like what you’re playing. Sounds pretty” you reassured him. “Good morning, Mark”
His previously guilty expression was taken over by a wide grin appearing on his face, which turned into a bright smile. “Good morning, pretty,” he said.
You smiled at him and he went back on strumming random chords on his guitar. His eyebrows scrunched in concentration and you couldn’t help but giggle at the sight of his messy hair and wrinkly t-shirt due to the, apparently, good quality sleep he just had. Your obsessive thoughts took over once again and didn’t let you enjoy this glimpse of happiness in the abyss of misery you were engulfed in. Your lips gradually dropped to a frown and your vision became blurry again.
Mark wasn’t perfect, but neither were you. He came into your life at the perfect moment, when you needed him the most. It was your first day at the bar, your first time as a bartender. Renjun had been training you all day, teaching you the basic parts of the job and giving you tips on how to handle weird or creepy customers. You were completely drained out that day, so your co-worker and soon-to-be best friend had promised you a pleasant surprise by the end of your shift.
Renjun’s definition of a “pleasant surprise” was slightly different from yours. That night, Mark walked into the empty bar with steps full of confidence. You didn’t know him back then, but from the very first second you saw his figure enter your life, there was only one word that kept circulating your mind; trouble.
Mark was trouble. With his sharp gaze and well-defined features, captivating aura and assertive moves, it was more than obvious that this guy would mean nothing but trouble to you. For some inexplicable reason, this was exactly why you were instantly attracted to him.
Mark came in carrying all the usual stuff Renjun wanted and gave them over to him without talking much. The two guys seemed to share a lot of past memories together, and you were right. Renjun had filled you in later that night on his relationship with Mark and how they helped each other stand back up on their own feet after they were forced to leave home. A story very familiar to you.
Mark came by the bar every single night. He didn’t give Renjun drugs every time, but he sure enjoyed both your and Renjun’s company. It’s not as if he had anywhere else to go.
That’s how you grew quite fond of him very easily. You found yourself looking forward to the end of your shift just so you could see him. He once offered you drugs but immediately took back his offer when he saw your shocked expression. You were at the lowest point in your life and doing drugs wouldn’t be the wisest habit to take up, even though this was, at the same time, the exact reason why you should do drugs. Eventually, reality hit you and you caved in, waiting for Mark to come at the end of your shift for one more reason other than just seeing him. He was reluctant at first. Mark didn’t want to drag you into this lifestyle, so you annoyed him and begged for it until he finally gave you the lethal medicine.
You and Mark were surprisingly very similar. Maybe that’s why you bonded so fast with each other. And maybe that’s exactly why you were equally bad for each other. You could see so much of yourself in him, just at a more put-together version. Sure, he was a drug dealer, which was certainly not a better job than yours, but he at least seemed to have a purpose in his life. Unlike you.
As time passed, you started spending more and more time with him. You would smoke crack, get high, talk endlessly until your mouths dried up, go back to your motel room, have sex with each other, and repeat. You found comfort in his presence and became attached to him without even noticing.
But you didn’t love him. No, you couldn’t call this love. Rather, you were depending on him, no matter how much you hated that. He acted as an emotional support beacon to you, you enjoyed his company and, if you were honest, you genuinely liked him. But it was hard for you to admit to any deeper feelings, so you repeatedly tried to convince yourself that you didn’t love him, so that it wouldn’t hurt as much if he ever decided to switch on you. You hoped it wouldn’t turn out like that.
You lightly shook your head to get rid of all these thoughts and got out of bed to wash up a bit. “I’m starving, I’ll go down to the diner to grab some breakfast, do you want anything?” you asked Mark as you were heading towards the humid bathroom.
“Let’s go eat there. Together” Mark suggested and you stopped at your steps.
He always avoided going out in places that were too public because he was at risk of being outed as a dealer. Especially now that he was caught selling drugs once and the guy who saw him threatened to report Mark to the police.
“Are you out of your fucking mind? You’re on thin ice, you said that yourself” you raised the tone of your voice and walked towards him.
Mark put down his guitar to focus on you. “You worry too much Y/n, like, what are the odds? We’re in the middle of nowhere, I doubt anyone knows this place apart from us and the customers of your bar. I think we’ll be fine,” he cleared his throat, “I mean, I’ll be fine. Relax, I wanna spend some time with you.”
You decided against protesting and trusted Mark’s certainty of his words. Besides, he was right. The diner was out of town, it wasn’t very popular among people who weren’t familiar with the bar. Most customers at the diner were either drunk people from the bar or passersby. So you simply just nodded and whispered a soft “okay” before you went inside the bathroom, the door emitting a creaking sound as you closed it shut behind you.
Tumblr media
The screeching sound of the fork scratching the surface of the porcelain plate turned your facial expression into a wince, which went completely unnoticed by Mark whose attention was entirely devoted to the pancakes in front of him.
The old diner was relatively empty despite it being lunch time. Other than you and Mark, there was only a group of friends and a guy sitting on a barstool. You were actually very satisfied with the quietness of the place, which was only disrupted by sounds of forks scraping plates and glasses thudding on the tables.
The diner was situated right down the same road your motel was at, so anytime your stomach growled in annoyance you would stop by and fulfill its needs. You were practically a regular customer now and probably the one who kept the place from going bankrupt. It was old, cheap and dirty; the perfect place for you.
Mark gulped down the last bite of his pancakes and thirstily drank the entire glass of water. He then set the glass down and leaned back on the booth, fixating his gaze on you.
You noticed his eager eyes on you and you set down your fork, mimicking his stance and staring right back at him, waiting for him to speak.
"That was a pretty good meal" Mark sighed and you smiled a bit. This wasn't what he wanted to say.
Since Mark seemed to be unwilling to speak his mind, you decided to take matters into your own hands instead.
"Why did you want to have lunch with me?" you asked him with your voice calm and your eyes searching for an answer in his.
Mark crossed his arms and scrunched up his nose before he answered your question. "’Cause I wanted to spend time with you. Actual time. You know, like normal people?" he said.
You rolled your eyes at his response and mimicked his body language once again, crossing your arms over your chest. "I don't buy it, Mark" you said.
Mark sat up straight and leaned closer to the table, resting his elbows on top of it. "Why are you always like this, Y/n? Whenever I tell you something, you never believe me! What's up with you?" Mark's frustration started building up in his attempt to defend himself.
"It's not that I don't believe you-"
"It's that you don't trust me" Mark interrupted you and you stood there with your mouth still open. You didn't know what to say.
Mark's gaze was piercing, his sharp eyes were darker than usual and his lips quivered at the blank stare you were giving him. "You don't trust me," he concluded.
The truth is that you weren't sure if you trusted him or not. You wanted to trust him and he had proved to you numerous times that he was someone who cared and didn't lie. Yet sometimes, you were afraid that if you trusted him too much, he would end up hurting you. So every time he said something you weren't expecting him to say, you immediately assumed that he was lying.
"Mark, listen to me," you started to say and Mark sat back against the booth, rolling his eyes. "I-I do trust you, it's just that-"
"What? You think I don't mean what I say? If I didn't meant what I fucking said then I wouldn't fucking say it! When I say I care about you, Y/n, I fucking mean it. When I say I fucking love y-"
"Don't get mad" you were the one that interrupted him now. Mark was clearly way too frustrated by you now, his voice was getting gradually louder, his eyes were full of fire and his nostrils were fuming.
At the sudden raise of Mark’s voice, the guy who was sitting at the barstool turned to look at your booth with a brief glance and then returned back to eating his food.
"Mark, just let it go, please" your voice came out almost like a whisper. You hated when Mark became angry at you and you hated it even more when he did it in public, even though it was practically just you and him in that diner.
Mark's jaw visibly relaxed and he lowered his eyes to his lap, nodding to himself. He lifted his head to look back at you with pleading eyes, much in contrast with his previous fiery gaze.
"Then why don't you come with me? Out of this fucking town? You deserve to live a better life than this. We deserve it. Look, I know I don't have an exact plan on how we'll do it, but I know that we can figure it out together. Please, Y/n" he said, taking your hand in his from across the table, rubbing your knuckles with his thumb.
You lowered your eyes at the spot your hands were joined together. Did you really love Mark? No, actually, did you really trust him enough to depend your entire life on him?
You couldn't give him an answer at that moment. Not a yes, not a no. Not even I don't know. Forget that, it would complicate things even more.
Mark noticed that you weren't going to give him an answer to his question soon, so he let go of your hand and started putting on his jacket. He reached into the inside pocket and took out some cash. He slammed it on the table and got up from the booth ready to leave.
"I have to go to work now, alright? I've arranged some deals. I'll come back later at the bar tonight. If you ever decide what you want to do with me, you know where to find me" he said and without even turning to look at him, you heard the sound of his footsteps grow fainter as he walked out the diner.
Tumblr media
The bar was relatively full tonight. From behind the counter, you could spot only two empty tables. That was the fullest the bar has been in the last month. At the far back of the bar, you spotted Renjun already counting the tips he had earned and it was still midnight.
All the customers were busy chatting and enjoying their drinks. You found yourself craving some alcohol too, the need for an intoxicant substance was growing stronger and stronger, so you decided to mix just a little bit of something to treat yourself.
As you were filling in your glass, Renjun walked behind the counter and leaned close to your ear to speak, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to hear him through the loud chatting of the customers. “Man, I think we are in heaven, I lost count of my tips and I’m not even high yet” he said and you giggled at him.
He noticed the bottle of vodka you were holding and nudged you on your forearm. “Hey, pour me some of that too” he asked and your response was to grab a glass from the shelf behind the counter and fill it with the toxic liquid.
You had barely stopped filling in the glass when Renjun grabbed it and downed the liquid in an instant. He placed the glass on top of the counter with a thud and licked his lips, savoring the bitter taste. “What’s up with you and Mark?” Renjun asked you. You contemplated whether you should answer him or pretend you didn’t hear him just to buy you some time. A good couple of seconds passed so you just caved in and answered him.
“I don’t know. Go and ask him.” you said in a tone filled with nonchalance, sipping on your drink.
Renjun rested his elbows on the counter, his eyes scanning the place around him. “He said the exact same fucking thing when I asked him about you. You can’t be running in a vicious circle all the time. Just fuck it out, you’re both acting like little kids” he said and you sighed at his scolding tone.
Renjun wasn’t just your co-worker, he had also grown to become your best friend, a person you could talk to freely without fear of judgment because he always understood your intentions. Engulfed in your misery and loneliness, he was the person who helped you get back on your feet and have hope that things will somehow get slightly better. That sounds like something a friend would do.
You brought the glass to your lips to drink the last sip of vodka that was still inside, leaving it empty waiting to be filled with more of that toxic liquid. “You wanna know what, Renjun? Even though I hate the life I’ve made for myself, I enjoy having Mark in it. But I can’t do what he asks me to do. I can’t depend my entire life on him. I can count on him for some of it, yes, but starting anew with him? I don’t know. I really don’t. I’m not the kind of person you want to start a life with. I will fuck everything up. And he shouldn’t count on me as much as he does. It’s for the better. For both of us.”
Renjun kept staring at you, waiting for your little rant to be over so that he could take his turn to speak. He gulped and looked at your burnt out figure. Your eyeballs were turning a bit crimson due to the line of cocaine you snorted earlier, even though you promised you’d wait until Mark came later, and the lack of sleep provided you with dark hues under your eyes and skin as pale as the moon.
“Look, Y/n,” Renjun started and came a bit closer to you so that he wouldn’t have to strain his vocal chords in order to be heard, “I see your point. And I understand exactly what you mean because I felt the same way when I came here. But in my case, I had nobody to lean on. I became an addict, left home and the rest of the story is familiar to you. But you and Mark have each other and, trust me, your future is looking way brighter than mine.”
You looked into his eyes searching for honesty. Renjun has always been honest with you and you never doubted any of his words. He really cared about you. Mark too, as it seemed. And he was right. Living in a cheap motel, starving and working long hours to barely make ends meet, depending on drugs and more specifically on an exceptionally lovely drug dealer wasn’t the life you imagined to have. But fate had different plans for you and now you ended up here, whatever this here is supposed to be.
Mark didn’t seem to be ill-intentioned. From the very first moment you met him, he was protective and caring, he had always treated you nice. He spoke to you softly and touched you in a just as smooth way. But the life he was living wasn’t that much better than yours; in fact, you could say it was even worse. He depended on you as much as you depended on him.
You didn’t know what was the thing that made you keep a sort of distance from him. Emotional distance. Part of it might be because you weren’t available to be fully devoted to him, because of fear that one day he would leave you, just like everyone else did. Part of it might be because the two of you weren’t so different and two broken souls mending together doesn’t necessarily make a fully healed one.
“I’ll talk to him when I’m ready. I could do it later but I’m afraid I’ll be too high to think rationally. Or maybe this will give me more insight, I don’t know, I’ve never thought of it. Do you think clearer when you’re high?” you asked Renjun but he was preoccupied, looking at the screen of his phone which radiated such brightness his eyes squinted as a reflex.
Scanning his features more carefully, you realized that the reason for his scrunched expression wasn’t lying solely on the brightness of the screen. You took half a step closer to him and Renjun tilted his phone away from you, hiding the screen from your eyesight.
“What’s wrong, Renjun?” you asked with worry lacing the tone of your voice. Renjun shook his head and put his phone away in his back pocket. “Mark won’t be coming by later. Something came up, I’m afraid we’re in trouble too. Listen, can you handle the bar for a couple hours by yourself? Mark needs some help” Renjun said, searching for his jacket underneath the counter.
Your eyes widened at Renjun’s words and you felt your heartbeat racing and your fingertips trembling. “Is Mark okay? Tell me, is he okay?” your rising voice quivered, betraying the nervousness you felt.
Renjun squeezed your shoulder and pressed his lips together in an attempt of a reassuring smile. “Yes, he is alright. He’s fine. He just needs some help with the cops. If you see anyone suspicious showing up, flash the stashes down the toilet, we don’t want them finding anything. I’ll be back soon.”
With swift movements, Renjun turned his heel to walk out the bar in a hurry, muttering something under his breath that, due to your shocked and nervous state, you failed to hear, “How am I gonna save your ass this time, Mark?”
Tumblr media
As soon as you heard the bell on top of the bar’s front door tinkle, you knew that Renjun was already outside and you were left alone in the bar. You were left standing frozen behind the counter, staring into nothingness. Your vision became blurry due to the tears that threatened to spill from the corners of your eyes, your hands curled into fists and your nails were digging deep into your palms, cold sweat forming at the sides of your forehead.
You were terrified. Mark was already caught selling drugs very recently, so your mind went to the worst case scenario which made you extremely terrified; that Mark was caught selling drugs by the police.
You dreaded this moment at the exact same time your eyes met Mark’s sharp ones. You knew that, once you became thick as thieves with a drug dealer, you would be in for a lot of trouble.
But you also knew how careful Mark was and this gave you hope that, whatever the case is right now, he would find a way to get himself out of there. Mark was a smart guy. You wanted to trust him, you wanted to believe that he would be smart enough not to get himself in trouble.
Yet something didn’t add up. Mark has been doing these types of deals for a long time now, he knew all the tricks of the job and he knew very well how to protect himself. So it sounded almost impossible that he would do something so reckless and irresponsible to get him caught.
There was only one possible and logical answer to all of your questions. That somebody ratted him out.
Your train of thought was disrupted by the husky voice of a man. “Excuse me, miss, would you mind pouring me a drink?”
Your head snapped at the sudden sound of a voice other than the one inside your head. Your eyes met with a man sitting on a barstool at the other side of the counter, looking at you with wary eyes. Your gaze was roaming all over his figure when your eyes halted for a second as soon as they spotted something shiny at the right side of the man’s chest; a badge.
You cleared your throat to cover up the anxiety and fear that started to appear in your voice. “Officer! What can I get you?” you greeted him with bright eyes and a cheerful voice that masked your intense heartbeat and the trembling state of your hands behind the counter.
“Actually, I don’t want a drink,” he started and moved his hand inside his jacket to pull out a file with pictures and papers, “but I do want you to help me with something. Have you ever seen this guy?” he asked you, placing the file on the counter and turning it to your side.
You gulped at the sight in the front of you and your eyes quivered from side to side. A mugshot of the face you grew to almost love was staring back at you. Sharp gaze and popping cheekbones, defined jawline and dark eyes were presented in front of you and you knew more than well enough who the person in the picture was.
Your heart sank at the sight of Mark’s mugshot and you knew what you had to do. You drew in your eyebrows together and lifted the picture with your hand in order to bring it closer to your eyes and examine it better. “I don’t think I recognize this man, officer” you said.
You set the picture down on top of the counter and looked at the police officer, not trying to avoid eye contact. You wanted to seem as less guilty as possible.
The police officer took the picture and put it back inside the file. “Really? That’s a shame. But I’ve been informed that you do know this guy because you were seen with him this morning.”
You froze immediately. Your brain tried to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, you tried to digest and connect everything the cop just said in order to form your answer.
“Are you sure about this, officer? A lot of other girls look like me, maybe it was a mistake?” you asked with a rising intonation in an attempt to defend yourself by adding another lie to your previous one.
You tried to remember where you could be possibly seen with Mark, especially during the day. You always met with him at night and you avoided seeing each other in the morning. There was no way anyone saw you with Mark.
The moment you had this thought, the answer to your question suddenly popped up in your head as if a lit up light bulb. That morning, you and Mark had breakfast down at the diner. And you specifically remember that suspicious guy who kept staring at the two of you.
That’s when you knew you had to do something drastic to get you out of this situation, and you had to do it relatively fast.
The police officer didn’t seem to buy the lie you had just uttered and continued to pressure you more. “Is this where you keep all the drinks? Can I take a look inside your storage room?”
The rhythm of your heartbeat kept increasing more and more by each word the police officer said and you were running out of lies and excuses.
“Sure, it’s this way officer” you said with a nonchalant tone, gesturing towards the door behind the counter.
The cop stood up and turned his heel to walk behind the counter and towards the storage room door. Your trembling hands had barely managed to hide the stashes you kept behind the cash register under your oversized shirt, and you followed the cop inside the storage room with uncertain steps.
The police officer could not find the rest of the stashes. It shouldn’t happen, and you had to act smart in order to prevent it. “Can I help you with something, officer? We can’t stay in here for too long, my co-worker finished early and we’re not allowed to leave the bar without having anyone to tend to the customers” you said in an attempt to speed up the process and get rid of him before he could find anything that could put you in jail.
“You can go back to your work, miss. This is my job here, you can go and do yours” the cop said as he had already taken a bottle of vodka in his hand to examine it for anything suspicious.
“Okay, I just wanted to help. Call me if you need anything,” your answer was convincing enough for him, but it wasn’t good enough for you to buy you more time.
You left the storage room and stood right outside the door, leaving it so open as to let you peek through it so that you were able to see what the police officer was doing.
With your still trembling fingers, you took out your phone from your pocket and dialed Renjun’s number with quick movements. Without taking your eyes away from the cop, you kept tapping your foot waiting for Renjun to pick up his phone.
The constant beeping sound in your ear signaled that Renjun wasn’t going to respond soon, so you put your phone back in your pocket and tried to think of what to do.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck” you muttered under your breath, running your fingers through your hair. Your eyes were wavering from the police officer to the customers in the bar and then back to the police officer. You had to do something to get everyone out of there.
Your eyes followed the cop’s figure and certainly didn’t like what you were seeing. The cop squatted down so that he could reach the boxes under the shelves and stretched his arm to pull out one of them.
“No, no, no, fuck” you whispered. Those are the boxes in which you hid the drugs.
You turned your head to look at the inside of the bar. It was fully packed. There was not any chair or barstool that was empty and, just at that moment, the door opened to reveal a group of friends who wanted to get drunk and have fun just like the rest of the people inside the bar.
The only person who wasn’t having any fun right now was you. And obviously Mark and Renjun as well, who you had no idea about their whereabouts or their well-being. On any random night, all these people in the bar would equal a pretty satisfactory amount of tips that would make your life slightly easier to get by. However, you could definitely not say that for this particular night, when your main priority was your and your friends’ safety.
Shifting your gaze from the customers to the police officer and back to your phone for any missed calls or unread messages from either Renjun or Mark, you were completely on your own on this one. Cold sweat engulfed your entire body as the seconds passed and the cop was one step closer to finding the thing that could turn your entire life upside down.
You swallowed thickly and looked at your phone one last time. No sign of anybody.
“Okay, I got this” you muttered to yourself and walked behind the counter where you usually stood. A middle-aged woman was sitting on one of the barstools, smoking and sipping lightly from the cocktail you mixed for her earlier. You picked up the first bottle of alcohol you saw on the counter - you didn’t have the time to care what it was - and walked towards her.
“Excuse me, miss, would you like a refill?” you asked politely to gain her attention. Before she even opened her mouth to speak, your actions were faster than her words. You quickly snatched the cigarette from her hand and put it out on the counter, immediately pouring some alcohol right on that spot.
Soon enough, flames started building up and the counter caught on fire. The smell of smoke became suffocating and it was hard to breathe in such a small space full of people. Your plan worked.
Muttering a string of “sorrys” to the woman, you turned around to pull the fire alarm. Every customer turned their heads to the direction of the piercing sound full of worry. “Everyone must get out, the building is on fire!” you yelled as loudly as you could, motioning everyone out the door.
Very quickly, you managed to evacuate the building by leading all the panicked customers outside the bat through the front door. In the midst of all this chaos, you noticed with the corner of your eye the police officer you rushed out of the storage room without looking any scared at all.
You ushered the last customers outside as the fire grew bigger, eventually leaving you and the cop as the only ones inside the flaming place. As he passed by you to get out the bar, he leaned closer to your face and whispered. "That was smart, young lady," he said and walked outside towards his car.
So he knew, you thought. He knew all along about the drug deals happening in this place and mainly the drug possession. He almost tricked you into thinking you tricked him. How amateurish of you.
You walked out the bar and shut the door behind you, watching the police officer drive away. A sigh of temporary relief escaped your lips and you pulled out your phone to dial a phone number you weren't particularly happy to call. Waiting for a few seconds, you heard the dreadful voice on the other line. "Hey boss, um, is it easy for you to come down to the bar? We kinda have a small problem" you said with a rapidly beating heart.
Tumblr media
The time was already 3:16. You were pacing around your motel room, patiently waiting for any news about Mark. You had already called and texted him multiple times, but all of your efforts to reach him went in vain.
A few minutes after you called your boss, she arrived at the bar, totally shocked and deeply saddened upon seeing her not-so-small business all up in flames. You explained to her what happened, shaping the story so as not to sound guilty, and luckily she didn't blame you for anything.
After the firefighters arrived, your boss encouraged you to go home, saying that you already went through a lot for the night, so you needed to get some rest.
So now you were back to your motel room, unable to get some rest because you were still scared about yourself and your previous interaction with that police officer. But most importantly, you were anxious about Mark.
You were terrified for him. And your fear only increased because you couldn’t do anything to help him or save him. You realized that you depended on him twice as much as he depended on you and that made you feel useless in situations like this. Knowing that Renjun was - probably - with him eased your nerves a bit, but, at the same time, knowing that you didn’t do anything to help him made you feel selfish and hopeless.
Everything you did tonight was to save no one else but yourself. The entire night, you kept worrying about yourself and how you could avoid going to jail when during those very same moments in time you had no idea how Mark was or what he was going through.
Mark wasn’t the helpless one in this situation; it was you.
As you picked up your phone to call Renjun again, a loud thumping noise on the door startled you. Your body jolted up upon hearing the sudden sound and you walked nervously towards the door to look outside through the peephole.
Your eyes widened in shock and surprise at the sight of the face that was constantly on your mind. You didn’t waste any time opening the door and pulling the boy you were aching to see all night long inside the motel room, wrapping your arms around him in a tight hug.
You rested your head in the crook of Mark’s neck and he reacted to your touch in an instant, stretching his arms to the small of your back to hug you as tightly as he physically could.
Tears fell from the corners of your eyes and you pulled back just as much as you needed in order to look into Mark’s exhausted eyes without breaking the embrace. “You can’t imagine how scared I was,” you whispered.
Mark stared deeply into your watery eyes. He moved his hands to cup both of your cheeks and nodded his head when he processed what you just said. “I know, I was terrified too. Renjun came to help me but we kinda fucked it up" he said with a stinging tone in his voice.
“What happened?” you asked and Mark let go of you and walked towards the bed in the middle of the room, sitting on the edge of it. You copied his movements and sat down right next to him, turning your head to his side as you waited for him to fill you in on what you had missed.
“That bastard ratted me out. That asshole from the diner. I had a deal with some teenagers and he called the cops on me. I don’t even know how he tracked me down.” Mark confessed looking straight, his eyes full of void, focusing on nothing in particular.
“Anyway, they took me to the police station and started questioning me about all this bullshit. There was no way I could excuse myself, they literally busted me, they saw me doing the deals. I texted Renjun and, I don’t know what he said to them but it didn't go well," he stopped to take a deep breath despite the desert that formed inside his mouth and the waterfalls that were forming in the corners of his eyes, "so we basically ran away and sooner or later the police will find me. I had nowhere else to go and I knew that your place would be relatively safe." Mark finished reciting you the events of the last few hours, tears staining his cheeks like the raindrops of a drizzle.
The dried tears that stained your cheeks became wet again when the new set of them fell down your face. You were staring at Mark through your teary gaze, trying to find any emotion in his void expression. He had never looked so soulless and it terrified you even more.
But the truth is that Mark himself was trying to mask his fear and anxiety by not showing them. The tears that traveled from his bambi eyes down to his popping cheekbones felt empty and the sight of him in such a state brought a stinging pain to your heart.
“So w-what does that mean?” your voice trembled at each word you uttered as you faced Mark with nothing but fear and another emotion that, at that moment, resembled love.
Mark made an attempt to wipe most of the tears off his face with the palms of his hands so that he could face you with clear vision. “It means I might go to jail. I will go to jail, unless I get out of here” he said. “Fuck, those bastards gave me an excuse to leave this fucking place” Mark scoffed as he sat up from the bed and started roaming around the narrow room, hands resting on his waist.
Your eyes trailed on every single one of his moves. You blinked several times to prevent any more tears from falling and cleared your throat to avoid your hoarse trembling voice. “So you’re really leaving” you said quietly, more to yourself than to Mark.
Mark turned around to look at you. “Yeah, I am. First thing in the morning. I don’t have many things to pack so it won’t take me long. And I can help you pack your things too, it will be quicker if-”
“Who said I’m coming with you?” you interrupted Mark and you immediately regretted doing so once you met his fuming gaze, which was now completely taken over by anger but was previously filled with nothing but emptiness.
“Y/n, we agreed to this. You’re coming with me and that’s it.” Mark growled as he took a step closer to you.
You stood up and started walking nervously around the place you called home, running your fingers through your hair in an attempt to ease your nerves. “We never agreed to anything. I told you I can’t-”
“Bullshit, that’s what you told me. Everything you said is bullshit. I want nothing but the best for you, we’ve been meaning to do this for such a long time and now that we have every reason to leave, you don’t want to! What’s wrong with you Y/n?” Mark clapped back at you.
A tear dropped down to your feet as you looked at Mark’s reddening face. Your lips trembled in your attempt to voice out your feelings, unfamiliar to your vulnerable state. “I’m scared, Mark,” you paused to sniff your nose, “I’m so fucking scared. For you, for me, for everything.”
Mark’s features softened at your sudden confession. He remained silent, gesturing to you to move on.
It was hard and unusual for you to open up to him like this. You hated the fact that he made you weak, that he had such a strong effect on you to make you eventually do as he says. But there was always this evil little voice in your head that told you not to trust him because, in the end, he would act just like everyone else and leave you.
“Do you know how scared I was tonight? I almost risked my fucking life for you! I had no idea where you were, I didn’t know what happened or why, and you know why? Because you never tell me anything! You only care about yourself,” all your fears and anxieties exploded and the outburst was so big you didn’t know how to stop. And you couldn’t stop even when you took a glimpse of Mark’s furrowed eyebrows and frowned lips, which you couldn’t tell if they were the result of sadness or anger.
You didn’t want to hurt him. But at this state, you couldn’t remain silent anymore. It wasn’t Mark’s fault, but you had reached a point where you couldn’t bottle up anything you felt anymore, so he just had to take everything you said.
You took a deep breath before you licked your dry lips to speak again in a calmer but still bitter tone. “If only you would disappear from my life I would-”
You never completed your sentence because Mark dashed towards you and grabbed you by the neck, squeezing the sides just so, so you could breathe a little bit, his face only a couple inches away from yours. “Shut the fuck up” Mark spat out with a growl which immediately kept you quiet.
His blackened eyes were piercing right through you, his fully black pupils bore into your wavering ones. You stood frozen there, completely locked in your place under Mark’s forceful hold on you, a position which made your lower stomach twitch.
Neither of you spoke for a few seconds. Mark’s face was painted in crimson, his eyebrows fully drawn in together and his nostrils flaring out, as he tried to keep his breathing steady. His angry state scared you even more; not because he would hurt you, but because he could hurt himself. Behind the mask of the angry man he presented himself as, you were the only one who could see the sad little boy who wanted nothing else from you but to love and trust him.
With Mark’s hand still pressing on your neck, your voice barely came out when you tried to speak. “Mark please, say someth-”
Mark interrupted you once again by smashing his lips on yours with the same force he held you under him and the same desperation he hid behind his bloody gaze. You didn’t waste a second, responding in an instant to him, moving your lips to the pace and rhythm he settled. You slightly parted your lips to allow him access to deepen it even more, as he slid his tongue in your mouth to dance with yours.
His presence and strong grip was too much to endure, so you stretched your arms to grab his hair. Mark sensed your need for more support, so he lessened the pressure on your neck and moved his free arm to the small of your back.
The previously quiet room was filled with the lewd sounds of your lips and tongues and the soft grunts and whimpers that left your lips in between each violent connection between them. You hadn’t realized how much you needed Mark, how much you had missed his touch and his burning essence on you until this very moment. Your body reacted to him almost immediately, as you felt your blood flow from your heart down to your aching core.
The heated argument from earlier was now completely forgotten and transformed into a passionate battlefield between two broken souls. Mark's crack infused breath, the bitter taste of alcohol on his dry lips and the lust overtaking his brain and controlling his actions electrified your entire body. There was not a single part of you that didn't want Mark, that didn't desire him and you couldn't help but want more of him.
Your brain, too foggy from the bold emotions and the alcohol you had consumed earlier, couldn't work properly, so your primal instincts took over you entirely. You kept kissing Mark while biting on his lower lip, which resulted in low whines coming out of him, his hardening length growing more inside the pressure of his pants.
You could sense him struggling to keep his cool and you were trying to give yourself some friction too by rubbing your thighs together. You reached your hand down to Mark's pants, cupping his dick outside the thick fabric of his jeans, the teasing action causing him to roll back his eyes.
Mark stopped kissing you abruptly and without wasting any time, he threw you on the bed with all his strength, watching you with hungry eyes. You plopped down on the bed, the sheets creasing at the sudden force and you looked at him with a lustfull gaze that invited him in.
"Wanna fuck you so dumb right now" Mark growled lowly as he took off his shirt from the back of his neck in a swift motion and continued to unbuckle his belt, his eyes never leaving your pleading ones.
You followed along, removing your own shirt and shorts, lying in bed only in your underwear. Mark had now discarded himself completely off of all his clothes except from his boxers, which had an undeniably visible precum stain on them.
Mark's body hovered above yours, connecting his lips with yours for a brief moment before he pulled back to attack your neck, biting and nipping on the spot right under your ear, which earned a loud gasp from you.
His lips kept on abusing your neck area, as you locked your fingers in his hair, tugging and pulling at it with every bite on your neck and chest. The hot sensation of his lips, tongue and wet saliva all over your body made you whimper under him, a sound that made his cock twitch inside his underwear.
Mark traveled lower down to your chest. He slipped his hand behind your back to undo your bra, removing the bra straps off your shoulders eagerly and tossing the piece of clothing somewhere in the dirty motel room. He was quick to attack your hard nipples, dropping his head to suck on one of them, and reaching the other one with his hand, twisting and rubbing it between his fingers.
Your moans and whimpers echoed in the room, the sound and smell of your bodily fluids polluted the small space, everything about the inside of the place being purely filthy.
The heat in your body kept rising and you could feel the stickiness in your panties. You wanted Mark, all of him. You wanted him to treat you however he wanted to, you wanted to please him by giving him all of you and you wanted to feel desired by him.
"Please Mark," you breathed in a soft moan, "please fuck me" your face reddened in your pathetic confession, but it didn't seem to stop Mark from ripping your panties apart, leaving your dripping cunt exposed to the dirty cold air of the room.
Your drowsy eyes and rapid breathing fueled Mark and all his inner needs, as he lifted his body off yours and parted your legs with his hands, pushing your thighs apart. You were breathing heavily in anticipation of his next move, which was a sharp slap to your pussy that sent a strong bolt of pleasure through your whole body. You moaned in pleasure and surprise and Mark repeated his action at the sound of your whiny moans.
"You're a pathetic little slut after all, aren't you?" Mark lowered his head and spat on your pussy, which had you clenching around nothing. "Look at you, begging to be fucked" he brushed one finger up and down your clit, just enough to tease you and elicit a sharp intake of breath from you. "You really pissed me off, you know?" he muttered.
"Please Mark, I want you. I need you so bad, please fuck me" you whined with a high-pitched voice, the one you knew that Mark could never resist, as you pouted your lips at him.
Mark rested his hands on your knees, holding your legs as far apart as possible, so as to have full access to your glistening cunt. His dark eyes were filled with nothing but hunger and lust, unable to control himself any longer from how bad he wanted to taste you. He lowered his head even further, brushing his lips over your clit.
"As you wish, princess" he mumbled to your wet core before he attacked your swollen bud, licking and sucking on your clit with absolutely no remorse.
A loud moan escaped from your lips at the abrupt touch of Mark's wet tongue on your pussy, your hands intertwining in his hair, grabbing and pulling at every licking stripe Mark left on you.
He kept on licking and sucking on your clit, mumbling sweet nothings and small praises, which reminded you more of the Mark you knew rather than the cold and hungry man that was presented in front of you a few minutes ago.
The lewd sounds of Mark's lips and tongue on your pussy mixed with your whiny moans turned him on to the fullest, as he pulled one of his hands away from your knee and dropped it down to slowly pump his dick underneath his underwear.
The burning desire rising up in his body was becoming too much for him, so he pulled away from your clit with one last sucking pop and took off his underwear, setting free his painfully hard length.
Mark positioned himself between your legs and with a swift motion, he turned you over to your stomach, pulling you by your hips so that your ass was higher up towards him.
"Need to fuck you so bad" Mark growled as he smacked your ass cheek with a sharp slap, your pussy clenching at the burning sensation.
"Please, Mark" you whined in the pillow, a tear rolling down your face and landing on the sheets as a response to the overstimulation taking over your body.
The way you kept whining his name and the juices almost dripping down your thighs had Mark gritting his teeth. He gave himself a few more light strokes as he positioned his dick right at your entrance. Without giving you any warning, he dived into your pussy with a sharp stroke.
You shut your eyes in pleasure and gripped the sheets tightly until your knuckles went white as Mark pounded into with sharp rhythmic strokes, each one pushing your head further into the pillow.
Your moans were coming out as crying mumbles as your face was buried deep in the sheets. Mark kept his pace and force, his head lolling back at the intensity of the moment. He kept his one hand on your hip in order to keep you steady while, with the other one, he reached down to grab a fistful of your hair, tugging at it and pulling it roughly, an action that triggered your hot tears to spill from your eyes at the pure sense of pleasure.
Mark's breathing was heavy and sharp at the sound of your soft growns and the sight of your ass jiggling at each stroke he left. "Is this what you wanted, pretty? Me fucking you so good you end up a crying fucking mess?" Mark provoked you in a voice as deep as the ocean, his groans low and hot like the pits of hell.
The sound of skin slapping on skin echoed inside the four walls of your motel room. Mark's hips connected with your ass in an intense force and a static speed, as he hit the spot that always brought you closer to the edge.
"I-I'm close, Mark, p-please" you whined as he gradually took you closer to your limits, your lower stomach twitching in pleasure and your jaw going slack as you felt your climax rising more and more.
"Let this pretty pussy cum on my dick, come on baby" Mark growled and with that, you let out a high-pitched groan into the pillow as your pussy clenched around Mark's dick, the forceful grip of your hands on the sheets was slowly loosened.
You felt Mark's strokes become sloppier as you coated his length with your warm fluids. He quickly pulled out and turned you over so your back was touching the soft mattress. He moved his body closer to you, pumping his dick slowly as he brought the tip to your lips, brushing softly against them as an invitation to take in his dripping cock.
"Open up for me, pretty" his fully blackened eyes bore into your teary ones. You slowly opened your mouth and Mark quickly pushed his cock into it, moving his hips as you bobbed your head up and down, sucking on his veiny length.
"That's right, baby. Such a good girl" Mark whimpered as he slowly released into your mouth, his hot cum dripping down your throat. You swallowed all of it completely before he pulled out and laid down on the bed next to you, both of your heavy panting echoing in the now quiet room.
Mark took a few seconds to ease his breathing and turned to the nightstand above his head to search for the pack of cigarettes you kept hidden in the small drawer. He took one cigarette out of the box and brought it to his lips. With the lighter you kept inside that very same drawer, he lit it up, smoke immediately coming out of it. The room now smelled like a mix of sex and smoke, and you winced at the odd yet satisfying combination. Mark took a long drag out of the cigarette and then puffed the smoke into the filthy air.
As soon as you caught your breath, you turned your body towards Mark's, looping your arm around his waist and resting your head on his chest. Mark responded to your intimate touch, wrapping his free arm around your shoulders, stroking your hair lightly. He pressed a soft kiss on your forehead and then brought the cigarette again to his lips.
After the long and terrifying day you had, you finally felt at ease. Your heart was beating normally, your breathing was steady and your mind was blank. All you could do was savor this moment with Mark, wrapped around his arms and listening to his beating heart, a sound that promised you that everything would be alright.
"Please don't leave me, Mark. I wouldn't know what to do without you" you whispered to him as you slowly drifted away to deep sleep. Mark didn't say anything back. He kissed your forehead again instead and inhaled deeply, exhaling in a long sigh, as his eyes were fixed outside the window, looking over at the bright city lights.
Tumblr media
Your eyes fluttered open at the sound of chirping birds outside your window. From the way the room was illuminated and from the shadows that formed behind every object, you could tell that it was only a few minutes after sunrise, and the bright orange sun confirmed your speculation.
With your eyes still half-open, you stretched your arms above your head and groaned, a soft yawn leaving your pouty lips. You then shifted between the sheets, turning your body to the other side of the bed, moving your arms around in search of the drug dealer’s toned body, the one that hugged you tight to sleep.
“Good morning, Markie” you mumbled, still half asleep. You rested your head on the pillow, still patting the mattress when you couldn’t sense the male beside you. Your eyes widened in an instant and your body quickly adjusted to the awake state. You were focused on the other side of the bed, where the boy you spent the previous night with would be lying sound asleep. Instead, you were met with nothing but tangled bedsheets.
“Mark?” you called again, in hopes that maybe he was in the bathroom and he couldn’t hear you. No response.
You yanked the sheets off you and rushed to the bathroom, opening the squeaky door with more force than you intended. “Mark?” you called, but the calling was in vain.
Maybe he went down to the diner to get us breakfast, you thought. It was still very early in the morning, but the diner never closed during the night, so there might be some leftovers or, if you were lucky, some fresh food at this hour.
So you decided to wait for him, thinking that his whereabouts were probably the old diner. Since you were now fully awake, you decided to take a shower and change into some fresh clothes. It will only be a few minutes, Mark will probably be back by the time I’m finished, you thought.
So you hopped into the shower, letting the warm water fall down your tense shoulders in order to ease your nerves and help your body physically relax. Your mind brought up the memories of the previous night you spent with Mark. You thought about the cop that came to the bar, you thought about the fact that Mark was in serious danger, you thought about your argument with him and how you made up afterwards by having steamy sex, just like every other time.
You didn’t know how to label your relationship with Mark, or whatever you had with him. He was more than a friend but less than a lover. He protected you, cared for you, helped you with any troubles you had and was always there for you, whatever it took for him. And what did you do for him in return? Nothing.
You did absolutely nothing, at least nothing that could compare to what he did for you. And you hated yourself for not being able to pull him out of his misery, even for the slightest bit, when he could even go as far as to move mountains just to see you crack a smile.
You didn’t deserve him; yet you were too selfish to let him go. He was a soul that wanted to fly and be free, but his wings were weighed down by your annoying fears and anxieties for the unknown.
The water dripping down your body suddenly turned cold and you immediately turned off the faucet and ran out of the shower, wiping your body dry with a towel. There was still no sight of Mark, so you quickly put on some fresh clothes and searched throughout the room in order to find your phone and call him.
Your eyes scanned every corner of the room where you could have possibly left your phone, when your gaze dropped to the wooden chair across the bed, the one where Mark usually sat when he played the guitar, only to find a folded piece of paper.
You stepped closer to the chair, picking up the piece of paper and turning it around. With shaky hands, you slowly unfolded it and a shiny bright red guitar pick fell on the floor. You picked it up, bringing it closer to your eye only to recognize it as one of Mark’s favorite ones.
You held the pick between your fingers and sat down at the wooden chair, looking at the wrinkly piece of paper. Written with a dark pencil, you recognized the sloppy handwriting and the small neat letters as none other than Mark’s and you couldn't help but feel your eyes sting in threatening tears as you slowly read and processed each heartfelt word he wrote:
Dear Y/n,
You’re probably reading this because you can’t see me in your room. But don’t bother look, because I have already left for a better, safer life and I won’t be coming back.
So here’s everything I couldn’t bring myself to say last night.
I love you deeply, Y/n. And I know your feelings towards me differ from my feelings towards you, but I’m not scared to hide it. You’re afraid of the power your heart holds and I understand that. For that, I will give you time, as much as you need to learn how to use this power.
I don’t know if I am a strong man or a coward for leaving; that I’m not sure of. But what I’m sure of is my life, and right now my life is in danger. I always spoke to you about how I wanted to have a normal life, to escape from this hell hole and build a different path for me.
Most importantly, I wanted to build this path with you. You’re the only thing that made this hell hole bearable, the only thing that gave me purpose, the thing that made my life have a meaning.
But I took some time to think and I realized that I can’t force you to follow the same path as me, no matter how much I need you or how much I want only what’s best for you.
So I left. I left to build this new path and I will try as hard as I can. I don’t care if I fail, because I know I can keep on trying and, no matter where you are, just the thought of you gives me strength.
I’m leaving you a piece of me behind though. My favorite guitar pick. I want you to have it. You can keep it, burn it, destroy it, I don’t care what you’ll do with it. I just want you to have something to remember me, something that means to me as much as you do.
So, for the meantime, mark me in your heart like I have marked you in mine, and think about what makes you truly happy. If you ever change your mind, you already know where to find me.
Your beloved,
M.

Kinktober Day 10- Pet Play
warnings: pet play, cockwarming, dom/sub dynamics, vaginal sex, 18+ minors DNI
main masterlist
kinktober masterlist
Tommy had always wanted a dog. Growing up he never had one, playing with the strays on the street instead. Now, he doesn’t have time to take care of a pet. Not one so reliant on him, anyway.
That’s why he has you. You’re obedient, never causing any trouble or making messes he has to clean up. You love to play, but you’re content sitting at his feet as long as he pets you every now and then. You’re good at fetch; you always get him his matchbook or a glass for his whiskey whenever he asks. And best of all, you have a tight cunt you’re eager to let him use whenever he wants it.
You’re not a prostitute, he made that much clear when your arrangement started. You’re on his payroll for the company you provide, not the sex. Whatever you do with your cunt is between you and Tommy, not the business.
He got you a custom made collar from the leather worker down the street, and your role has been set ever since. You’re Tommy Shelby’s puppy. Loyal, obedient, perfect.
Today Tommy is in a particularly sour mood. A business deal fell through or something, you never know the specifics, and he’s been angry all afternoon.
You know better not to pester him, especially when he’s like this, but you truly hate seeing him upset. You’ve been kneeling at his feet and he hasn’t even pet you in over an hour. You paw at his pant leg to get his attention.
“What is it?” he asks without looking down at you.
“Do you need anything, sir?” you ask.
He shakes his head and sighs heavily. “If I needed something, I’d take it. Keep quiet, pet.”
You pout but take his instruction and stay silent. You walk forward on your knees to rest your cheek against his thigh. He sighs again but doesn’t chastise you for it. Still, he doesn’t pet you.
You stay like that for a while, but you can feel his tension and you hate when he won’t tell you what he needs.
“Is there anything I can do for you?”
“No,” he replies, frustration evident in his voice.
“I can help you relax, sir.”
Tommy slams his fist onto the solid oak top of his desk. “I don’t need your fucking help. I’m trying to work.”
You huff. You don’t usually act like this, but Tommy is never usually so dismissive of you.
“I was going to offer to sit on your cock while you work, but I guess you’re too busy.”
It was petty, but it peaked Tommy’s interest. His large hand cups the back of your neck and you look up at him.
“You’ve never acted this way before,” he says with an unreadable tone.
“I just want to help you, sir.”
Tommy's jaw clenches and he sighs heavily. Then, he reaches down to loop his finger in the ring of your collar and pulls you up to your feet. You watch as he undoes his pants and takes out his soft cock.
He looks up at you expectantly, waiting for you to service him. You grasp his dick and begin to stroke him gently, working him up to full hardness. It doesn't take long; Tommy can never resist your soft hands.
Once he's at full mast, you pull up your dress and straddle his lap. His cock slides into you slowly and once he's fully seated, you wiggle your hips to get comfortable.
"Stop fuckin' moving. I've got work to do," Tommy gruffs.
You nod and rest your chin on his shoulder. You sit still like a good girl while he fills out whatever paperwork is on his desk. You can feel the tension in his muscles release a bit as time passes, your cunt obviously doing the trick.
You don't move your body, but your walls clench around him every now and then. You're not doing it on purpose, you just can't help it. It feels so good being full of Tommy's dick.
"Puppy," Tommy says, breaking the almost hour of silence.
"Yes, sir?"
"You're distracting me."
"I'm sorry, sir. I swear I'm not doing it on purpose," you say with a pout, trying to look as honest as possible.
Tommy puts his pen down and leans back in his chair, creating space between your face and his so he can get a good look at you.
"Cunt's just that desperate for me, eh?" You nod. "Well I suppose I've worked hard enough for one day. I could use a bit of stress release."
Tommy's hands land on your hips and he begins to rock you back and forth. Tommy never was strong willed when it came to you.

Blasting Off To The Past: Chapter 1: The Customers Are Used To This By Now
Finished chapter 1 of my fanfic based on @yamujiburo's Jessie/Delia Pokemon comics. The fact that it's just the first chapter is a development that materialized roughly 5 minutes ago when I realized this thing is getting way too long to write all at once. It's just a fun little day-in-the-life story because I wanted an excuse to write these characters.
Here's the AO3 link.
Below is the full chapter text. Enjoy!
“Meowth, I demand to know why you just kicked me!” James yelled dramatically.
“Don’t flatter yourself, I wouldn’t waste my time kicking you!” Meowth
The lunch rush took its toll on everyone in different ways. For Delia, the strain kept her too busy to notice anything outside the restaurant. For Jessie, it meant Delia wasn’t looking at her.
In the case of James and Meowth, it was dealer’s choice. Today, that meant each blaming the other for the table leg they each routinely tripped over. Meowth’s thimble-sized temper had reached a boiling point. James was mad by association.
Delia had been holding down the kitchen until the commotion piqued her attention, prompting a peek around the corner into the dining area. She saw Meowth seething as his serving tray clattered to the ground, trading leers with James whose serving tray remained pristinely perched atop his fingers.
Then time stood still as she saw Jessie burst in with a face that gave her conflicting feelings, making a Beedrill-line for the bickering duo. How she heard the noise from across town would remain a mystery. The love of Delia’s life was a lit fuse heading straight for a flamboyantly colored powder keg. The focus now needed to be heading off the stormfront before it turned the restaurant into a restauNOT (she took a second to chuckle at that).
“Jessie. Babe. Sweetie.”
The red menace continued undeterred. Delia raised her voice.
“Jessie, stop! Jessie! Honey!”
Still nothing. Delia was desperate.
“STOP, DAMMIT!”
Jessie screeched to a halt, bringing the universe with her. She and her two partners in something or other all turned their heads toward Delia, three identical faces of exaggerated shock. Though Jessie’s sported a tinge of crimson.
“I… buh…” she attempted.
“Delia made a swear,” Meowth whispered.
James simply covered his ears.
But whether through shock or sheer force of Delia’s long-bided power, the situation was defused for now. The residual fallout kept things together until the restaurant finally slowed down. James and Meowth lost their abrasion around each other, more or less back to their regular selves give or take the occasional shared look towards Delia. Granted, not unlike their usual behavior.
Jessie, meanwhile, had stuck around to help however she could. At the moment, she was employing her puppy dog eye technique to try and soften Delia’s mood every time her wife looked her way. Despite coming across more like bewildered Magikarp eyes, which had Delia desperately suppressing a snort laugh at every turn, it probably would have worked even if she actually had been angry.
Eventually, closing time arrived. Jessie had finally released Delia from her fishy look and was taking a break from cleaning to watch James and Meowth. The other two former Rockets were Taurosing around with each other as they took the garbage out back. Delia noticed a wistful look in her wife’s eye. It was one she’d been seeing a lot of lately.
“You miss the adventure, don’t you?” Delia asked warmly.
Jessie gave a slight start at this before nodding. They’d grown to know each other well enough that it was no surprise Delia could read her so intimately.
“I know we weren’t the good guys going after the twe- eh, Ash and Pikachu like that,” Jessie seemed just a bit embarrassed, “but getting out there and traveling around really got my juices moving.”
“Even more than our little battling vacations?”
“W-well, I wouldn’t say…” Jessie hesitated, but she knew she never needed to hide anything from Delia, especially after all this time. “Kinda, yeah.”
Jessie’s regular trips out into the region with Delia to explore and battle gym leaders had very quickly begun to rank among the highlights of her life, and she wouldn’t trade them for anything, no matter how shiny. But…
“I just miss the camaraderie with James and Meowth,” she found herself gushing. “I miss the cartoon-level plans we came up with together, I miss the big Meowth balloon, I miss James’ camp cooking and Meowth’s snoring, not to mention-”
“I’m sorry, what was that about Meowth?”
“Oh, right, you never heard his outdoor snoring. Only happens when he’s camping. Real conker of a wavelength he could belch out, which you wouldn’t expect from a little fart like him. I think he developed it as a defense to make predators think a Snorlax is sleeping nearby or someth-”
“What?” Delia had trouble getting a word in edgewise sometimes, a trait of their relationship she oddly treasured. She liked seeing Jessie excited. “No, why would I ask to hear about…? Never mind, I meant the balloon thing.”
“Ok, yeah, that makes more sense,” Jessie admitted. “It was a thing of genuine beauty. A huge hot air balloon in the shape of Meowth. We even used official Team Rocket funds to commission it. They seemed cool with it.”
“I’d like to point out that they did very much fire you.”
“Oh yeah,” Jessie said with a guttural giggle. “Wow, things are definitely starting to make some more sense now that I say them out loud. But anyway, we used to go everywhere in that balloon. It was our own little home where we never had to deal with property tax. We’d sleep up there, have some fun by spitting off the sides, do… other things off the sides…”
“Honey, I love you but oh my god.”
“Hey, if you can think of other ways to handle being up in the air for days at a time…” Jessie’s old smug nature crept in, which she caught before going any further. “Th-the point is I just miss the balloon. It was sort of a symbol of that complete freedom we used to have. Nothing tying us down, literally. No rules. No responsibilities. No bosses or authori-” she paused, her expression that of a system reboot. “How did we not get fired sooner?”
“I didn’t realize how much you thought about that time,” Delia started to feel just a touch of guilt. Or was it jealousy?
“Not 'all the time' or anything. Some things just remind me of that past life. Like how James and Meowth have been sniping at each other a lot lately,” Jessie said with a look of dawning realization. “They must be feeling homesick too. Or, I mean ‘homesick’ I guess,” she made some halfhearted quotes with her fingers. A glance over at Delia dropped the fingers immediately as Jessie read her wife’s expression, as subtle as it was.
Jessie wordlessly walked over to Delia, not rushing, not holding back, simply going. She took her hands in her own and clasped them.
“I am happier now than I’ve ever been,” Jessie answered a wordless question. There was no need to explore the topic further. This is the most she’d talked about the old days since, she realized, that awkward time when she, James, and Meowth had shown up on Delia’s doorstep completely out of options. It was enough that she got it out.
Delia just smiled. It was a genuine smile, but one that obscured hidden depths. Depths that ironically flew right over Jessie’s head.
Once they finished closing, Jessie and Delia stepped out of the restaurant hand in hand, following James and Meowth who had apparently regained their passion for griping. Jessie paid little attention as they fired quips back and forth, sounding to her like synthesized speech from a Nintendo 64 game. She was content where she was, blissfully strolling home with the love of her life. No thoughts, just vibes.
If she’d only opened her eyes, she’d have seen the poorly-hidden look of sneaky determination emblazoned on Delia’s face.
-the next morning-
“Ash!” Delia burst into her son’s room. “We’re making a balloon!”

Insecurities Part 4
Tumblr media
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 ~
Buggy X Fem Reader
You were starting to calm down the closer you got to Gin’s house. You’d somehow made it home before sundown and were quite happy at the idea of taking over the later show for the night. As you walk in there is very clearly one thing that strikes you, “Benji what did you do to your hair!” It was a mess, he was already reckless with his hair, sometimes teasing it to go every which way. But right now, it was frizzy and very clearly haphazardly cut. One side was the length it was when you had left and then it abruptly got short, jaggedly getting longer around his head.
        “Oops, thought you wouldn’t notice so quickly,” Benji beamed smiling up at you and even Azure snorted at the absurd thought, “I got in a lil trouble but it’s fine!” He reassured while spinning to show no other ailments besides the renegade hair.
        You sigh going to Gin’s storage closest and grabbing a box with some stylist scissors, “Well I can’t have you going around like that, sit down.” You scold both of them over being reckless as you cut his hair into something much more manageable for the more reckless of the two boys.
        You swipe some stray hair’s off Benji’s shoulder before asking them if they’d like to go home for the night. Gin wasn’t home yet but you’re sure he wouldn’t be worried knowing you were coming home today.
~~~
        “Mistress Zazel! I’m glad to see you made if back safely, although a little earlier than planned,” You wave your hand as acknowledgement towards your bookkeeper Mertle but motion your head towards the boys in your arms. Despite them being 5 and rather large, you were still able to carry them with ease, one over each shoulder as they had started to fall asleep on the walk over, one after the other asking to be picked up before passing out. It was a little strange that they were asleep this early, they were used to staying up for the shows, but you assumed it was just a nap from the excitement of the day.
        He bows his head before getting closer to talk to you, “It does seem like the boys have angered another person, He was asking about one of them today, although that was about an hour ago. So, I’m not sure if he’s still around” He whispered, opening doors to the sleeping quarters for you.
        “Thank you for the warning, I’ll take care of it, also let the crew know I’ll be leading the show tonight” You whisper before heading to your apartmentlike quarters. You tuck both your boys into bed before heading out to look for the angry customer, most of the time people would calm down enough when you appeared in front of them to forget their transgressions, others demanding compensations, and depending on the situation sometimes a fight. You were happy to oblige most anyone’s concern, and were always thrilled for a fight, staying on land for so long had made you miss the sea and the battles that came with it.
        You go towards the rehearsal tents, it’s where most people sent the angry customers to wait for you, looking for a disgruntled person. But after a while you couldn’t find anything and went to go prepare for the show. Nothing could take your mind off of stress more than preforming, it’s when you felt the freest. The lights, the costumes, the applause of it all.
Your boys were allowed to come with you every now and then, but only for special occasions. Most of the time it was the side acts and smaller shows that you allowed them to take part in. You’re sure this little sleep would only be a quick nap and hoped they’d wake up by the end of the show to meet you rather than go off causing mischief.
~~~
        Buggy gave up looking for the boys after it was clear that every child he saw, was not imitating his look or making fun of his nose. He pulled his cloaks hood up and decided to buy a ticket for the main event. It had been a while since he’d seen another circus act, maybe he could scope out talent for his own crew. And this Zazel had become a bit of a hot commodity at the beginning of the Grand Line, most people called her show a celebration of making it safely into dangerous waters, and He was curious as to what so many people had been saying about it.
        Sitting down in the middle of the crowd, where he thought he’d get the best view he looked around. It was certainly a stationary set-up; the building may give the look and feel of a tent but Buggy could see how the wooden supports and walls were hidden by fabric draping about. He looked up and towards the walls where there was walk ways high above everyone, lights and fixtures attached every couple of feet. He’d give it to them, the set up was truly ideal, it didn’t seem like there was a single bad seat in the house.
Before he could look around more the lights dimmed and a spotlight turned on in the center of the arena. Music had amped up the great reveal for there to be nothing, a missed cue. Amateur. The music took a dip and the spot light turned off before they began again, still nothing. Then, without a beat the music amped up, the spotlight flashing a bit before a woman falls from the ceiling in an aerial silk, barely missing the ground by inches. The wide smile evident on her face as she swon high in the air, jumping out without any supports much higher than any sane person would do. And yet Buggy was amazed to see her somehow fall gracefully and landing with barely any disruption to the sand on the ground.
Buggy’s breath hitches as she stands up and takes a few bows towards the crowds while applause and cheers go wild, “I am Mistress Zazel” the women stands straight up, both hands going into the air as lights go wild and other acts swing in view, or move around. So many small details grouping of people that no one could watch them all. And despite that, Buggy’s eyes were fixed on the woman, they were fixed on you, how you shined so brightly. “And this is my Dazzling Circus!”
The juggling of knives, fire eating, and trapeze had dazzled people enough that they forgot of the world outside as the show continued. The entire time Buggy focused on you, on your ringmaster costume with a top hat that had to have been clipped into your hair. He watched as you moved in your own dance on stage, around the people, hyping everyone up before getting into your own routine. The shoe’s you worn looking dangerously high yet fits your perfectly.
Soon enough the show was over and Buggy had realized he hadn’t seen anything else but you, but just as how you appeared on stage in a blink of an eye, you disappeared. He was one of the first people to stand up to leave, rushing to try and find you.
The crowds around making it hard to move he was getting angry. He breathed in, I know where she is. She can’t just leave, it’s alright if I don’t find her right away, he rationalized while slowing down. There’d be plenty of time to get to you. Just as he was calming his anger down, he felt a slight jostle of his pocket and looked down.
~~~
        Azure and Benji had woken up just in time for the crowds to leave the main tent. They both decided to see who get the most on their way to their mom’s private tent and went in similar directions, targeting different people.
        The crowds had gotten thick which was perfect for them and Azure decided that the tall man in a fur coat would be the perfect target, after all anyone hiding their identity had secrets and treasures to hide. He snickered at the thought of finding a big score.
        But just as he passed by the man, delicately grabbing the first thing in the man’s pocket, he felt a hand grab his collar. He was lifted into the air, legs kicking underneath him and he realized there was no arm attached to the hand holding him up. “There you are, you brat,” An angry voice came out before Azure looked up, making direct eye contact with the man they had stolen from just hours before.
        He gulped, letting out a small whine for help as the disembodied hand shook the boy slightly, “Who do you think you are stealing from me twice?” Azure was the shy, timid one of the two twins and had only stayed silent in fear at the danger he sees in front of him. And despite all that he was also amazed at how similar his face was, the pictures on the bounty poster he had gotten glances off didn’t truly show off the clown’s true features.
        “And what’s with that ridiculous nose?! Are you making fun of me?” Some of the acts and tent merchants had started to make their way to the commotion.
        Azure finally snapped out of his state at the last comment, “My nose isn’t weird! Mom says it’s beautiful!” He cried out trying to punch and kick the man in front of him, tears brimming his eyes.
        Before Buggy could say or do anything more someone grabbed Azure and pried his shirt loose from Buggy’s grasp while another person had gripped the clowns’ shoulders. Azure turned to grab onto Antonette, a sword swallower, burying his face into her shoulder. “I’m sorry sir, but if you’d like to make a complaint, we’ll have to direct you to our main office,” The strongman act, Hubert, says while gripping Buggy’s shoulder with brute force.
        Buggy was angry, but he didn’t like the subtle circle of people surrounding him, and the boy had been whisked away in a blink of an eye. Benji following behind his brother to make sure he was alright. Angrily Buggy replies, “Well take me to whoever’s in charge then!” It seems like the boy was a part of this circus, he could at least bargain to try and get his belongs back, maybe even fight a person or two. The thought of you being in charge had completely left his mind at how angry the kid had made him.
~~~
        “Mistress Zazel.” An exasperated voice came through the tent that made you sigh, you had just gotten changed into a less revealing costume and called for the person to continue, knowing it had something to do with your boys “A uh. An angry customer grabbed Azure; we have him in Holding Tent 7 for you.”
        Your blood boiled at the news, swinging the fabric open, coming face to face with Mertle who seemed to have known you’d be pissed, “And why did this dearest customer dare to grab my boy?”
        “He seems to be the man from before. Claims that they stole from him twice today.” You let out a breath. “Antonette has both boys in her tent for now, neither of them seems to be injured in the slightest,” He adds in the report to try and make you calm down. You start walking with Mertle towards the Holding Tents. They were called tents, but they were much more akin too private rooms that locked. You had decorated them to look like small training areas for your own amusement but it had come in handy with calming some people down in the past, or of course taking care of said patrons. Mertle had been one of your first business partners and he took his job to heart, everyone in this circus did, and most people who had been here since the beginning looked after your boys as if they were their own. But you couldn’t help but feel that Mertle was holding onto some information, regardless you were about to teach another patron a lesson.
        As you passed by a couple of your main acts there were whispers about having to get ready for a body clean up. You were approaching the tent quickly and could see two people guarding the entrance, you usher them to open up and your let in, the door quickly closing behind you.
        The man in question had his arms crossed and was huffing in anger, back turned towards you. You take a running start, the man turning around at the sudden noise, and take a good hard punch at his face, covering your fist in Haki as you make contact, your blinding rage not granting you a look at his face.
        To your surprise the punch didn’t knock the man out, it had barely forced him to turn in the direction you hit. The sudden realization of a couple of blue strands popping out from the hood, making you freeze. The man took advantage of your frozen state and grabbed both your hands, pushing you to the ground, restraining you.
        And just as you had frozen at the sight of just his hair, you were now face to face with the man you still loved. The one you watched from afar but never tried to contact after he had kicked you out. Emotions overfilled you and you clenched your jaw to try and stop from crying.
        Buggy, on the other hand, had been just as surprised as you, he had somehow forgotten he was following you when the blind rage of boys making fun of his look had walked by. And now here you were. Alive and well. Pinned underneath him. He stared at your features, holding in his breath in case it was a dream. His eyes glance at your features that he had memorized from your wanted poster, but none of it could compare to the real you, the one that had aged slightly since the last time he had seen you.
        Overwhelmed with emotions himself he did the only thing he could think to do and slammed his lips against yours in a deep desperation as tears pricked his own eyes. You tensed up at the sudden contact, you weren’t sure what to do, your mind was flashing through the pain he had forced you to go through. You clenched your eyes shut, streams of tears falling down the sides of your face as your lips began to quivers.
        Buggy, leaned his forehead against yours, “Doll…” His voice was just above a whisper as he called you, “Please Doll,” The voice you heard sounded broken and you slowly opened your eyes, staring into his own. You were shocked to see tears falling down his own face, a trickle of water going from his eyes to his nose, a drop falling on you, “I’m so sorry Y/N” he cried out while staring right at you. Your heart skipping beats as your mind became confused, “I am such an idiot,” He continued, his grip on you loosening.
        You looked down his face, he looked like a toddler who gotten his candy stolen, it was an ugly crying face for sure and you couldn’t help but hold in a chuckle as your mind continued to race of what was happening. “Y/N, I love you. I’ve always loved you. I’m sorry.” You couldn’t tell if the tears drenching your face were your own or the man’s above you but your heart ached at every word, he was saying to you, “I don’t know how I could ever make it up to you” Your noses were touching now and you were sure that his face paint had gotten on your own forehead. “I’ve been looking for you for so long Darling, I’m sorry,” He was blurting things out faster now.
        You sucked in a breath to calm yourself down, you couldn’t stop the tears from falling but you could stop your face from scrunching up in the same way Buggy’s was. You slowly move your hands to either side of his ugly crying face and smooshed it together a bit as you wiped tears from under his eyes. Smiling a bit at how he willingly let you move him around as he continued to cry. He tried to apologize again even has his lips were puckered out like a fish with how you were holding him and you take one more final breath before pulling him in, kissing him yourself.
        This is not how Buggy pictured your reunion. He had pictured something less…. Pathetic. He didn’t want to cry, or show you his weak side. He wanted to come and sweep you off your feet, gently demanding you to join him at his side again.
        He hadn’t expected to be punched by you the second you saw him, and he was even more shocked to know that it was you who had punched him, he was expecting someone else entirely, security perhaps, but not you. You had sent his rage into desperate desire to be by your side again he was overwhelmed. He had pinned you down without realizing it was you but the second he caught your eyes; he couldn’t stop himself from initiating a kiss. He couldn’t miss his chance to feel you lips on his again, even if just this one time. And as he pulled away the tear ducts started flowing, there was no stopping them and he could only think of the sorrow he had felt these past years before thinking of how much despair you yourself had been in.
        He didn’t understand what you were doing to his face, he knew he was a sobbing mess and he was only expecting another punch, or at the very least a push away. He didn’t deserve you; he’ll never be worthy of you. He had truly ruined the chance he had with the love of his life and seeing you were mere inches from him again made him emotional. He was even more shocked when you pulled his face in, to kiss him yourself. Your own kiss being a desperate and hesitant one, that got stronger as time went by.
        When you finally pulled back, slightly gasping for air you finally let out a small wail that you didn’t know you had in you. Buggy wrapped his arms around you sitting up as you fisted his shirt in your hands. Pressing your face into his chest, “You’re awful.” You beat on his chest as he hugged you closer letting all your pain out. He stroked your hair as he agreed with you, and that he didn’t deserve to be forgiven. After swearing him out between your sobs, “I’ve missed you so much” he squeezed you as tight as he could at your words, “I didn’t think you wanted to see me ever again.”
        “Doll if only you knew how much I tried looking for you…” He whispered while rocking you back and forth. He added it was his own fault for this.
By the time you had both calmed down there was snot all over his shirt and bruises on his chest from where you were pounding him. He was silent and glanced at you, his make-up an absolute mess and you snorted between a few of your sniffles, “You look ridiculous.”
“You don’t look any better Doll.” But he quickly shut himself up, looking at you with what you could describe as puppy-dog like eyes, shifting back and forth slightly.
~~~
        “We want to see mom!” Benji yelled at Antonette who was starting to pull her hair out from the twins’ behavior.
        “You know the rules. When she’s dealing with an unruly customer you have to wait until the noise stops,” you never stopped them from seeing blood and gore, but you had set a rule that they couldn’t see how it had happened. Not yet at least. And thankfully everyone in your crew agreed with the sentiment, although some would prefer to shield their eyes, the boys were the ones who continuously tried to see it.
        “How are we supposed to know when the noise stops if we aren’t near the tent!” Azure exclaimed pulling on a curtain, digging his feet into the sand as he let the weight of his body fall.
        “Besides, I don’t want this one to die!” Benji yelled out and Antonette gave him a strange eyebrow, “He was too interesting! He looked like us!”
        Antonette snorted at the comment, “If you mean like a clown that should worry you even more, you don’t come to a circus looking like a clown if you aren’t apart of it, that’s just weird.” Benji sat on her feet and hugged them, “You ain’t getting sympathy from me pal, we aren’t going until someone fetches us.” She crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair.
        But as her back met the chair she heard a snicker and looked around, without her realizing it, Azure had taken down an entire curtain and was in the process of wrapping it around her. She tries to stand up, only to realize that Benji had already restrained her feet together with a small amount of rope. “Sorry Netty!” Azure yells as she watches them leave while she was yelling after them.
        They sneak around, avoiding any gaze from their many babysitters until they make their way to Tent 7. They see Mertle in front of it sitting on a stool while going through a ledger. The twins look at each other and nod.
        Azure stays behind the corner while Benji makes his way to Mertle, the man looks up surprised to see the boy, “Why aren’t you with Antonette?” He asks quizzically. He closes the book, standing up.
        “Netty left us. There was a loud noise and angry yelling and she went to go check it out-“ Benji sniffles a bit, “And now I can’t find Azure and. And” Mertle looks startled at the normally overconfident boy starting to cry.
        “Hey. Hey wait. Let’s go look for them alright?” Mertle goes to pick the boy up but Benji nods before running in the opposite direction as Azure. “Hey, Benji, Wait up you shouldn’t be alone” And with that Azure goes to the tent.
As per usual, the door is locked but he makes quick work of unlocking it. Benji already beside him again, leaning against the door to try and listen in on what’s happening. They can hear Mertle yelling in the background but the man hasn’t thought to look where he had just been. “Got it!” Azure says happily while turning the door knob.
“Hey mom did you kill the guy yet?” Benji clammers out as the door opens and he falls to the ground.
“Yea, this one was interesting we don’t want him dead” Azure adds as he trips over his older brother.
~~~
        You two had decided to talk for a bit, his legs in a v shape as you sat on top of him, with your own legs outstretched behind him. Your hands on his shoulder so you could shake or hit him whenever you wanted which he happily obliged too. You had demanded to know how much he missed you, enjoying the groveling man and letting it heal your broken heart slightly.
        He had regaled to you how he’d only become more infamous with a higher bounty in hopes of finding you, every island, ship, or marine base, destroyed or conquered in search of you. You didn’t know how you felt yet. You loved him, you missed him. And here he was right in front of you, begging and apologizing to you, telling you how much he loves you. And yet you couldn’t quite figure out if you could accept it. It had been years, and your heart ached to be with him, but was it right?
        You lean back, placing a hand on the Buggy’s leg behind you while brushing another hand through your hair, just as you let a sigh out you hear something from behind you. Looking behind you, you see Benji had fallen to the ground first, likely just falling from leaning on the door, while Azure had made it another step into the door way but fell over his brother, eating sand on his way down. Both of them clamoring out words you could barely understand.
        “Hey what have I told you two about disrupting Mommy’s work?” You scolded them, momentarily forgetting the man you were sitting on top of.
        “Did they just say kill?” You straighten your back as you remember your predicament, “Did they just say mom?” You turn back to look at Buggy. “Did you just say mommy?” His thoughts were reeling, processing everything. He looked over your shoulder to see the brat, or rather brats from earlier. He thinks of his last interaction with one of them, and the words the boy had said before being whisked away, My nose isn’t weird! Mom says it’s beautiful! You tense as you watch Buggy’s face slowly put the dots together, your face turning a slight shade of red, “Are those brats…” He points to them, “My brats?” and points to himself.
        The look on his face slightly in awe but mainly unreadable and you swallowed a bit and nodded. “They’re named Benji and Azure,” You croak out. You didn’t know how he’d react to realizing he was a father. You gripped his leg a bit and rub your arm with your free hand. The boys still coughing up a storm behind you from when they ate the ground.
        Buggy studies the two boys, in all their clumsy glory. Azures Blue hair slightly loose from a pony tail, but well maintained and Benji covered in dirt as he goes to pull at his brothers’ hair. They both seem to have forgotten their original mission, rather focusing on who tripped who. And to your surprise he turns to you with a grin across his face, “Aw Doll, why didn’t you tell me” He wrapped his arms around you and put his head into your shoulder before he slumps over a little bit, “I made you go through this alone,” He whispered.
        You still weren’t quite sure how to act, what to say, what to do. But you felt a little relieved at how Buggy was acting. You could still hear your boys arguing behind you and decided to slowly wrap your arms around Buggy. “They act a lot like you…” You whisper, as you can still hear the boys arguing with each other.
        Buggy straightened up a bit coughing a bit and avoiding eye-contact, “Maybe. Maybe they could learn a thing or two from their dad.” You were silent, more shocked than anything else at how eager he seemed at the idea, “O-only if you allow me.” He had taken your silence as a soft rejection and tried to reassure you he didn’t want to force anything.
~~~
        “No you grabbed my ankle!” Azure yelled as he tugged at his brother’s ear, trying to punch him. Benji had an iron grip on his hair as he proclaimed that Azure was the one that had tripped him. Both boys throwing punches and barely landing any in their tangled situation.
        “Boys!” The two immediately stopped, going to stand up straight and wiping any sand or dirt off of themselves at the voice of their mother. They both looked up at similar times and fully took in the sight in front of them, you had turned your body enough to see them and were scowling. Meanwhile the man you were sitting on had been looking at both of them in awe, perhaps a little nervous as he flicked his eyes between the boys and you. “Come meet-“ You had stopped halfway through your sentence realizing what you were about to say and a heavy blush filled your cheeks.
        You didn’t need to finish the sentence for them to understand though as both boys ran up on either side of you with curiosity filling their eyes. “Are you, our dad!?” Benji asked while tugging at Buggy’s sleeve, Azure giving him puppy eyes as the two boys stared at the man.
Buggy flipped his head to look at both boys before looking back at you, only to see you had turned your head to the corner to avoid eye contact, but even he knew it was out of embarrassment over anything else. “You have our nose! It’s real!” Azure beamed happily at the man as he poked the nose and even Buggy was flustered at the situation.
“Would you like it if I were your dad?” Buggy finally spoke cautiously, eyeing you every now and then to make sure he didn’t cross any lines. And you couldn’t help but let out a small snort as you saw admiration in Azure’s eyes as Benji had a wide smile.
You watch as Buggy, still very overwhelmed with emotions look to you for approval and you just give the slightest nod. Within a moment Buggy’s arms had wrapped around all three of you and squeezed you tightly making you gasp. “I’m gonna need to teach you two how to do make-up properly,” Was the first thing he said proudly still not letting go, “Cause whatever I saw this morning was god awful.” You could hear as Azure muffled his laugh into his fathers’ clothes and Benji straighten up a bit at the comment.
 As Buggy loosens his grip on all three of you, “I told you it looked awful!” Azure gleefully proclaimed while looking at his brother, who in turn tried to climb between you and Buggy to get at his brother.
Buggy laughed before grabbing both of them tightly on either side of him, “I see they like to fight.”
“Well, who do you think they got it from?” you laughed, relaxing quite a bit at the display in front of you.
Just as you were enjoying the moment you heard the door swing open behind you, “M-Mistress Zazel I have horrible news. The Boys they’re miss-“ You look behind you to see Mertle in a frantic state, stopping at the sight in front of him.
“Ah, don’t worry ‘bout it. The boys are with me.” You say waving him away, “Everyone’s dismissed for the night. No need for ‘clean-up’.” And Mertle gapes his mouth open but is able to let out an okay closing the door behind him.
“Were you gonna kill me doll?” Buggy let the boys go to gingerly place a hand under your chin, making you turn towards him as he leans in closer.
“Well, you did attack my boys” You smile glancing at his lips before looking at his eyes leaning in closer.
But just as your lips brushed against each other, Benji, not understanding anything, loudly shouts, “Mama kills anyone who touches us!”
“Yea! You woulda been number 34!” Azure agrees while beaming up at their father. Both boys trying to climb on top of Buggy as though he was a jungle gym.
“I see we have quite the trouble makers,” He smiles leaning close for an actual kiss that you happily accept.
Terrible Waiter(Pavitr Prabhakar x Reader)
Tumblr media
"Oh, Jeez...you reminded the teacher of homework? No wonder the class doesn't like you!" I laugh at my ridiculous boyfriend while he gasps in offense.
"Hey, in my defense I worked really hard on that homework." He sighs, taking a sip of his tea.
"Yeah but half the people in your class didn't..." I remind him with a small laugh as I take a bite of my cookie.
Right now we're in the cafe I work at. Pav came in earlier and as soon as my break hit I joined him.
We go to different schools, so he likes to catch me up on why he's so...disliked in his class.
"They have nobody to blame but themselves." Pav shrugs, sending me a small grin. "At least I got a hundred!" We both laugh lightly.
"Oh, and another thing-." He starts but then a hand places itself on our table.
"Excuse me, can you take my order already?" I look up to see an interesting individual staring at me with an annoyed look.
Oh, right. I'm still in my uniform.
"Oh, sorry no. I'm actually-."
"You're a waiter aren't you? Just take my order. I swear the service here is awful..." The man rolls his eyes.
Pav gives me a look and I shake my head slightly at him.
"Yes but as I was saying I'm actually on my break right now, so if you wanna go to the counter they can help you over there." I smile awkwardly.
"I swear...listen, I'm in a rush and the line is way too long. All I want is a chicken salad!" The man shakes his hands in the air.
"Great and you'll have to order that chicken salad at the counter." I remind him with a slight shift in annoyedness.
"Listen, just go get me the chicken salad or else-." He moves to put his hand on my shoulder as he talks, but Pav speaks up.
"Or else what?" He asks with a slight eyebrow raise. "Wha- this is none of your business kid." The older man speaks, rolling his eyes.
"You're about to put your hands on my partner. So yes, it is my business." Pav states as he stands up from his seat.
"Kid's a waiter, the least they can do is make me a damn salad! I swear, where are our taxes going?" The scruffy looking man starts ranting about taxes.
"I can't say I care about your salad. Just a heads up. If you try to put your hands on my partner again, I'll make you regret it." Pav warns.
Meanwhile I'm the only one still sitting in my chair. Customers are starting to look at us.
Embarrassing...
The man ignores Pav, placing a hand on my shoulder harshly.
Pav raises an eyebrow.
BAM!
"Owww...don't touch me there, it hurts." Pav sucks in through his teeth.
"I wouldn't have to touch you there if you didn't get into a fight with a man twice your size." I remind him, making sure it hurts when I apply medicine to one of the cuts on his stomach.
"It wasn't a fight." Pav tries to interject.
"Yeah, tell that to the table you smashed his head into." I scoff.
"Hey, on the bright side now you can say two men have fought over you." Pav chuckles. I try to hide my laugh.
"I see you trying not to laugh you goof." Pav smirks.
I reach over and hit his arm.
"It's not funny, you could've been arrested!" I tell him between giggles.
"It'd be worth it for you." He smiles at me.
I grab a bandage, sticking it to one of his bruises and pressing down to make sure it hurt.
"Ow!" He complains, nudging me back.
"Remember that pain next time you get into a fight, dumbass." I roll my eyes.
"I've remembered that pain a lot more than you'd think." Pav whispers, rolling his eyes slightly.
"What was that?" I ask.
"Nothing! Did I mention I love you?"
What Took You So Long?
Tumblr media
Fred Weasley x fem!reader
~•~
The café buzzed all around them, but Fred sat motionless, staring across Diagon Alley at Y/N standing outside her little shop, chatting with a customer.
"Hey, mate," George said.
No response.
"Hey Fred," he tried again.
Again nothing.
"Freddieeee."
Still nothing.
"Earth to Fred. Come in, Fred. This is ground control to Major Fred."
"Huh, what?" Fred snapped out of his daze.
George rolled his eyes. "Are you gonna eat, or are you just gonna sit there and drool over Y/N all afternoon?"
"I'm not drooling!" Fred touched the corner of his mouth. "Am I?"
His twin shook his head and chuckled. "You know, if you're so in love with her, you should ask her out."
"I never said I was in love with her!" Fred looked horrified.
"Maybe not out loud." George said.
The older twin sighed and shook his head. Very little got past his twin. "I don't know..." Fred said. "We're friends. I don't want to make things weird between us."
"Suit yourself," George shrugged and dug into his lunch.
Fred heaved another sigh, returning his attention back to Y/N, who, when she noticed him, broke out into a brilliant smile and waved.
He gave her a quick wave in return and immediately turned his attention to his sandwich, worried that his face might spontaneously burst into flames at any moment.
~•~
Y/N and Fred had known each other since their Hogwarts days. They weren't really friends then, so much as friendly acquaintances. Fred had been too enamored with Angelina to actually notice her. Not that it would've mattered much anyway. Y/N had been involved with a Ravenclaw bloke for most of their school years.
All that changed after the war. Y/N opened a small perfumery on Diagon Alley and soon became a regular at the joke shop. Her oldest sister coincidentally had twin boys, and Y/N spoiled them to bits.
"My sister's gonna kill me," she'd told Fred, laughing, when he showed her their newest product, Whizzies, a less dramatic version of Whizbangs for the younger crowd.
"You know, we do sell Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder in case you need to make a quick getaway," Fred suggested with a mischievous grin.
"Hmm... that might be a good idea," she said, returning his grin and added the powder to her purchase.
Y/N returned a few days later to regale him with the results of her most recent purchases, which involved a few small explosions that set the sofa on fire, followed by her quick getaway. After she helped put out the fire, of course.
It didn't take long for Fred to fall head over heels for her.
~•~
That was a year ago. And he still hadn't worked up the courage to ask her out.
"Tell me the truth, Freddie," George asked him the night after seeing his twin's face turn beet red at lunch. "What's up with this woman? What happened to Mr. I Can Get Any Girl I Want?"
Fred shrugged. "He ran away the moment he realized how much he liked her. It scares me, George, how much I like her. What if we get together and I fuck it up like I did with Angie? I... I don’t think I can go through... that again."
Ah. George nodded and patted his brother's shoulder. It all makes sense now. Fred was devastated when things didn't work out with Angelina. Of course, in public, he played off like it didn't bother him. It was only when he and Fred were alone that his twin let the mask slip. George couldn't ask him to put his heart on the line like that again. Nor did he know if he could watch Fred go through that kind of heartbreak again. So, he let the matter drop.
~•~
Y/N had never really given Fred Weasley much thought when they were in school. She remembered him being cute and funny, and maybe a bit crazy. But her interests lay elsewhere at the time.
Things were different now, though. For one, she was single, and for two, Fred had grown up. He was still cute and funny and a bit crazy, but it was tempered now with a sense of responsibility. Whether that came from the war or being a business owner or a combination of both, she didn't know. But she would really, really like to. In truth, she would like to know everything about him.
She'd thought that maybe he liked her back. He'd certainly given off those vibes many times. But it'd been almost a year and nothing more than the occasional invites to lunch with him and George had happened. And whenever she suggested that just the two of them do something, he always had other plans.
Perhaps she was wrong, she thought. Maybe it was time to give it up before she broke her own heart.
~•~
"Y/N hasn't stopped by the in three weeks," Fred peered down at her shop from their usual table at the café.
"Maybe she's been busy," George shrugged.
"Yeah, maybe..." Fred mumbled, shifting in his chair to get a better view of the perfumery's entrance. If she stepped out, he'd decided he'd wave her over.
But she never did.
Fred hated feeling so vulnerable and confused. He was the man with the plan, but he had no plan for this. Y/N had never been far from his mind to begin with, but now, she was all he could think about. Every time the shop door opened, his hopes rose only to sink through the floor seconds later when he realized it wasn't her.
Is she ok? Is she just busy? Did I say or do something wrong? Is she angry at me? Should I try to go talk to her?
Fred had admitted to himself that he cared for her, but he didn't realize how much until she stopped coming around.
"She's all I can think about, George," Fred confessed one night while they were working on paperwork. "Everywhere I turn in the store, I see where she's been. I hear her laughter. Every new invention, I think of her and how much I want to show it to her. Does she not buy stuff for her nephews anymore?"
George sighed and watched his twin for a moment. "I've been debating whether or not to show you this," he pulled a document from his pile of paperwork. "Here's the list for all the mail orders for this past month. She's made two big mail orders."
Fred snatched it from his brother's hands. "Why are you just telling me this?!"
"I didn't know until a couple of hours ago when Michael gave me his compiled list."
"But... why?" Fred stared at the paper. "Did I do something?"
"I don't know, Freddie. I wish I did."
~•~
Another week passed.
Nothing. Not even a glimpse of her.
And then, it happened. Fred spied Y/N sprinting past the joke shop, no doubt trying to get inside before the oncoming storm burst. Without a thought, he raced out the door after her.
"Y/N!" He called out. "Wait up!"
She stopped and stared at him, the wind whipping her hair in every direction.
"Hey," Fred greeted her. "How are you?"
"I'm uh, I'm good..." She looked up at the dark clouds roiling above them.
"Yeah, yeah. That's good," Fred replied. "I just, um... I was worried about you. You haven't been by the shop in a month."
Thunder rolled in the distance, and the first droplets fell, pattering on the cobblestones.
"You stopped me because I haven't been to the joke shop??" She wiped away a raindrop that pelted her just above her left eye and shook her head. "I'm going, Fred."
"No, wait," he placed a hand on her shoulder. "Please, Y/N."
She whirled around. "In case you haven't noticed, the bottom is getting ready to drop out!" She gestured toward the sky.
"I know, I just," he stammered. "Are you mad at me?"
"What?" She actually looked shocked. "Why would I be mad at you?"
Fred threw his hands in the air. "I don't know!You tell me! You're the one making mail orders instead of coming into the store."
Another clap of thunder, this time closer, then lightening rent the sky above them.
"Oh, for Merlin's sake, Fred," Y/N wiped her wet hair away from her face. "I'm not mad at you, ok?"
She started to turn away, but Fred stopped her again. "Then why don't you come into the shop anymore?"
The rain was now beginning to soak into their clothes. "Why do you care?!" She snapped, the lightening in her eyes far more intimidating than any the storm could produce.
"I - I uh," Fred chewed his lip, rain dripping off his nose. "I miss you."
"You miss me??" A year's worth of frustration and disappointment boiled over and exploded out. "I'm just another fucking customer to you! It shouldn't make a difference whether I shop in the store or not. You're still getting my money!"
"Wh - I don't care about your money!" Fred stepped closer to her. "You're not just another customer to me! You're... you're..."
"I'M WHAT, FRED WEASLEY??" She raged. "WHAT THE HELL AM I TO YOU?"
"YOU'RE MY FAVORITE PERSON!" He yelled back.
Y/N blinked, her hands dropping to her sides, as all her anger melted away with the rain. "What..."
"You're my favorite person, Y/N," he repeated, softer. "And I miss you. I miss you so much. Everything reminds me of you. It's driving me insane."
She stood frozen in place, eyes riveted on the man before her for a few long moments. Then suddenly, she rushed toward him and caught her in his arms, their lips melding together, passionate and electric, matching the intensity of the storm.
"What took you so long?" She teased once they parted.
Fred chuckled. "I'm an idiot."
Y/N smiled and nodded, squinting against the sun now peeking through the dissipating storm clouds. "I don't know about you, but I'm soaked to the bone. And I'm starting to shiver a little."
"Well, we certainly can't have that," Fred pressed her tighter to him. "Your place or mine?"
"I'm thinking yours," Y/N said, peeking around him. "George is standing in the doorway with his hands on his hips, glaring at us."
"Oh right," Fred turned and waved. "I ran out and left him alone during the afternoon rush. I'm in big trouble now."
"Best we hurry, then," Y/N giggled and gave him one more quick kiss.
Chapter 3:
The Victims
You sighed, checking the little egg timer in your apron pocket to see how long until the scones you were baking had left in the oven. Fifteen minutes. Ugh.
It had been a few days since Steven had come in and purchased his pillar of books. The two of you would make small talk, him thumbing through books and rambling about a subject on ancient Egypt that he knew. The moment you brought up your own obscure facts you have memorized from the things your father would read to you as a little girl, Steven’s eyes lit up and he got the biggest grin on his face, and launched himself headlong into info-dump mode. It was kinda cute, really, how excitable he got. You could tell the poor guy probably didn’t have many friends, aside from his brothers, whom he’d told you about, and a friend named Layla. You also found it endearing how his messy, bed-raggled curls would flop over his face, or how animated he’d seem when he would interrupt himself to bring up another fun fact…
But, it had been a day or two since he’d come in last. And to be honest, you kinda miss the guy. He was probably the nicest most engaging customer you had. He even admitted that he didn’t come in just for the books. He told you he liked your teas and treats, and he loved the comfortable atmosphere of your shop over a crowded cafe. But one day, he just had to ask:
“I’ve been meaning to ask…” He started, looking at the muffin in his hand.
“Hm?” You hummed as you stocked shelves.
“Are these… vegan?” He seemed hesitant to touch the muffine now, as if it were poisoned.
You giggle softly. “Yes, actually. I try to use recipes that everyone can enjoy. Vegan, gluten-free…”
“Oh! Wonderful!” He scarfed the muffin down rather quickly after that, his nose buried in the textbook on archaeology he had in his hands.
You set your phone down as you sipped your spiced tea. It was a rather cold and gloomy day today, not uncommon this late in the year, but still, it sucked. It reminded you of where you grew up in Maine, off the coast. Storms blew in all the time, you’d remember as a little girl getting up in the morning, wanting to run outside and play, just to be met with a dark and angry sky, blistering winds, and pelting rain.
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
Your poor little six-year-old heart was crushed one day when a particularly bad squall blew into town, and you were trapped within the confines of your house, arms crossed, feet firmly planted as you glared out the window, lip wobbling.
How dare the weather ruin your plans for the day? You were going to play in your treehouse! Now the stupid wind was gonna blow it away! And if it did, your father would have to build another one, and that would take forever!
“Hey, there, Lil’ Bit.” Your dad said, kneeling behind you, as you stubbornly looked out the window in a seething rage. So, so angry for a little girl. You inherited your temper from your mother, surely. Though you personally never saw her mad, of course. Ever. But then again, she worked so much…
Your mom was what your dad told you was a “breadwinner”, which was a term you found dumb. You mom never entered contests and she certainly never won bread as a prize. It was so dumb! Why did adults have to use such dumb words for things?
“Hey, kiddo.” Your dad sang, leaning forward from where he was crouched to put his chin on your tiny shoulder.
“No, daddy, ‘m angy.” You mumbled, trying to shrug him off as lightning flashed in the distance.
He chuckled, his voice warm, much like your favorite pair of fuzzy socks after they were just taken out of the dryer. “Come on, princess. It’ll pass. They always do.”
“But why did it have t’ do it today!” You whined, not budging.
“Dunno, kid. The sky just felt like dumping buckets, I guess.” He said, humoring you.
“Daddy...” You groaned, rolling your eyes. “Clouds don’t use buckets!”
“Sure they do!” He grinned, waggling his eyebrows at you. “You just never see em!”
“You’re silly.” You scoff.
“You’re silly!” Your dad laughed, scooping you up and spinning you around, finally getting a smile out of you as you shriek in laughter.
He tucked you against his chest and kissed you on your forehead. “Come on, kiddo. Let’s get you some sna–”
His eyes went wide and he gasped when you writhed, crying out and wincing like you’d just been struck.
“Babygirl, what’s wrong?” He asked, hurriedly sitting you on the couch as you curled in on yourself. He could see the welts start to peek out from beneath the sleeves of your little pink shirt.
It was happening again.
The pain in his heart gripped him like ice, knowing he couldn’t do anything to ease the pain his daughter was feeling. His poor, poor baby girl, whose soulmate was constantly being inflicted with whatever horrors they faced with.
He would curse it, sometimes. Your mark. Your bond. You were already enduring abuse that wasn’t directed at you. Or maybe it was in a way… Given that it was happening to your other half. Who you would one day meet. Maybe things will be better, when you had. Maybe.
But one thing was for sure, he hated whomever was inflicting those injuries on your soulmate more. Not only were they hurting your soulmate, they were hurting you. He’d imagined that you were close in age. If so, who the hell would abuse a child in such a way? The concept was completely foreign to him.
He rubbed your back, murmuring sweet and loving things to you.
He noticed something odd about your mark about a few years ago, right when the welts and bruises started to show and you would recoil in phantom pain... There was a new addition to your mark. At first it was one crescent moon. But then one became two, and two became three.
Right now, the bottom right moon was full.
He wasn’t sure what it meant… But he noticed your crying slow to soft little hiccups and sniffles as you sit up, rubbing your eyes.
He rested his forehead against yours. “It’ll be okay, sweetheart. I promise.”
“I jus’ wanna know why it hurts so much, daddy.” You sniffle.
“Trust me, I know. Me and your mom are similar. I remember when we were kids, before we met… She fell from a tree and broke her leg. Man, it hurt so bad…”
You looked up at him, your big beautiful eyes glistened with tears. Your mother’s eyes. Little gems of hers that you would always have.
“Really?” You peeped.
“Really.” He stood and walked over to the bookshelf above the living room fireplace, and plucked a book off of it. He turned back to you and sat next to you, pulling you into his lap and kissing the top of your head.
“This book came from your great auntie over in London. You remember her, yeah?” He hummed.
Your fingers grazed the cover, old and worn, obviously well-read and well-loved. It had a picture of a woman with wings and a pretty dress on it. You couldn’t read the other words on it just yet, you were still learning how to read the bigger ones.
“Want me to read you some of the stories in it?” He inquired.
“Uh-huh.” You nod.
Your father flipped the pages open, and hummed again, softer.
“Now, let’s start with the tale of Isis and the Seven Scorpions…”
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
You jumped, almost dropping the egg timer you had in your hand when your shop’s door dinged and swung open. A frantic young woman rushed inside, her sunken and baggy eyes looking at you, wide with fright.
You skipped the usual welcome and regarded her with a confused expression.
“I… Can I help you–”
“Please, I just need to–to hide!” She said, rushing over to you and gripping your hand, pulling you behind her and further into the winding shelves that made up your bookstore.
“Hey, Hey.” You say, putting your hands on her shoulders. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“My–my boyfriend. He… He’s… I messed up and burned lunch and…” She looked to the side trying to check if he somehow didn’t materialize out of thin air over her shoulder when she wasn’t looking; and when she did… you saw them.
The already darkening bruises on her delicate throat.
Immediately you went into protector mode. You gently urge her towards the door leading to the stairwell that went up to your flat above.
“You hide up there, and call 999, okay?” You say to her. “You can stay here until the police arrive. If it makes you feel safer, there’s a deadbolt to the door up there. If your boyfriend comes in I’ll act like I didn’t see anything.”
You rush to the oven when you hear the timer go off, and pull out the scones (after slipping on your mitts), when the bell to your store dings.
You curse under your breath and say to the girl quietly. “Stay quiet, honey. I’ll be up when the police get here.”
You carefully slip the tasty treats onto a plastic tray and toss the pan into the sink with a clang; instantly regretting it when the young woman flinched and curled into herself, her arms instinctively reaching to cover her head.
You muttered and apology and balanced the pan on your hand as you hastily make your way down the stairs, to see whomever was incessantly dinging your “ring me!” button at the register.
When you finally break free of the labyrinthine bookshelves, you spot a rather large and angry looking man.
This had to be the boyfriend.
“Hello, one moment, please.” You say tersely, sliding the scones into the small display case showcasing the fresh treats of the day.
“Oi, you seen somebody come in here?” He demanded gruffly.
You take another visual sweep of his appearance. Rather big build, probably abuses the gym too much. He looks like he exclusively dines on protein shakes more than food… He could be trouble, if he got violent. The only upside is that you knew the layout of your little shop by heart, he didn’t. You really wished you had a gun under the counter, right about now.
You made a mental note to sign up for the courses and get the certificate from the police..
“Other than you, no, you’d be my first customer of the day.” You force the cheer into your tone as you bring a box of books and begin to half-assedly place them, hoping to look normal.
“Ain’t no fuckin’ customer.” He growled. “Don’ want no books.”
“Well, I also offer a variety of coffees, teas, and snacks–”
“I ain’t no fuckin’ customer!” He barked, getting in your face.
You could smell the alcohol on his breath. That explains the slurred speech.
“Sir, I’m gonna have to ask that you please back away, you’re a little too close…” You say, your hands up in a submissive gesture, hoping to appear as non-threatening as possible.
"Does it look like I giv' a fuck? Ya fuckin' muppet?" He hissed at you, his eyes dilated and glassy.
"Look, I don't want to cause trouble, but–"
He seized your arm and gripped it painfully tight, you could feel the crunch of your radiocarpal joint being squeezed under his rough and indelicate fingers. "Did ya hear me, ya fuckin' cunt? I'm lookin' for my girl, I know she came in here! Don't lie t' me!"
"Sir, people come into my store all the time, and it's not really my business why unless they buy a book or a muffin. Let me go!" You retort, trying to pry his fingers from around you with your free hand.
"Shut th' fuck up!" He snarled, pushing you back against the bookshelf so hard the back of your head cracked on one of the shelves. Great, another pain.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" An unmistakably American accent called from the door of your shop.
How had you missed the bell? How did you not notice the sound of the door opening?
The drunken man holding you turned, still gripping you. "Great, another fuckin' yank? Can't you fucks stick to ya own country?"
You felt your pulse quicken, and your eyes widened at the man who stood in the door; dark, honey-tinted eyes aflame with anger. But the man the eyes belonged to?
Dead ringer for Steven. But he carried himself entirely differently, he even had his hair styled back in a different way. He wore a white hoodie, faded blue jeans, and some steel-toe boots.
"None o' ya fuckin' busniess, you dick." The man sneered, looking back down at you.
"It is if you're hurting the lady." He said gruffly.
"Oi, you got a listening problem?"
The man turned again, but he was met with the knuckles of the American man who just came to your aid; straight to his jaw, knocking him back against a cart you had full of discount books, sending them to the floor with a clatter.
The man cracked his knuckles, before gently grabbing you by the shoulder and moving you behind him for cover.
At this distance you could just barely catch a whiff of sandalwood and some kind of spice. A hint of aftershave wafted into your senses in accompany.
"You fuckin' dick!" The man grunted, shaking his head in an attempt to reorient his brain.
"You need a better repertoire of insults, buddy. Or stop hitting the sauce." The other man sneered. "Probably both."
The drunk lunged at him, and this guy was one step ahead, intercepting him by grabbing his wrists.
The crunch of bone was enough to make you squeeze your eyes shut, and when you dared to peek again, the drunk was clutching at his now bleeding and broken nose. Your savior on the other hand?
Barely broke a sweat. He headbutted him with the hardest part of his head, crunching bone and cartilage.
"Stay down, asshole." He growled. You spun on your heels to look at the door when two clothed officers came in, hands on their pepper spray.
"Everybody just calm down!" One of them shouted.
Ugh. Now you had a headache…
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
By the time the officers, the battered girl, and her boyfriend all left, it was just you and your knight in shining hoodie. Who looked way too much like Steven.
You sat him down at one of the reading nooks and shakily wring your hands out to calm down. "Uh… Yeah, so…" You try.
"My name's Marc. Marc Spector." He said. "You, uh… met my brother, already. Steven."
You gasp. "The heathen!"
He choked out a startled laugh. "What?"
"Oh! Uhhhhhh…" You clear your throat awkwardly trying to change the subject. "You and Steven have different last names!"
Marc huffed through his nose. "It's uh… a long story."
"What, were you guys separated at birth or something? He speaks with a typical Londoner accent, you're full-blown American." You smile.
"Or something." Marc murmured, unable to meet your eyes.
"God, and Steven and I joked about my life being a setup for a book." You giggle softly. "You guys sound like you're straight out of a Dickens novel!"
Marc kind of squirmed in his seat. "Yeah…"
"So, uh… what brings you here today? From what Steven told me, you don't exactly pick up books all the time like he does." You say to him, tilting his head.
Marc wiped at his face with a groan, "Ugh. Don't get me started on Steven's books! He has too goddamn many–"
"Ah!" You say, flicking a stray curl. You weren't sure why your brain told you that was okay to do. It just felt right. The look he gave you afterwards sent your heart leaping into your throat.
Raw confusion, maybe some surprise?
"Uh… No talking like that is allowed in my store, there, pal…" You stammer out. "So… why are you here?"
"Steven said you had coffee. Didn't feel like dealing with a lot of people today." He kind of mumbled.
"Oh, I get that." You sighed softly in sympathy. Already, Marc struck you as the kinda guy who didn't like dealing with people unless he had to.
And honestly, you kinda felt for the guy. Something about him made your heart twinge in a funny little way.
"Tell you what, as a thanks for helping take care of that asshat, coffee is on the house, and I'll even give you a cup of my personal blend instead of the stuff on the menu."
"Uh, you don't have to–"
"Ah!" You say, wagging a finger at him as you walk away. "None of that in my store!"
🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒🌒
You sat and talked for a while. Hours, really. Whereas Steven loved to babble about things he knew, and was rather energetic about it, Marc was… reserved. Shy, almost. He was content to let you lead the conversations, piping in here or there on a subject.
He told you some about his time in the Marines, and how something happened to him mentally that got him discharged early. He was vague about what he did after that, but he mentioned moving to London after he and his wife ran into problems.
At first you almost asked a rather impertinent question, "Why did you guys split up?" But decided that was far too rude of a thing to ask. Even if you wondered why he married outside of a soulmate bond. Even if a marriage like that wasn't entirely uncommon…
"I'm sorry." You say softly, sitting across from him, your coffee long finished, the mug cold. "You've been through… a lot..."
"Yeah, you can certainly say that." Marc sighed, turning his mug in his hands for probably the hundredth time.
"So… Thanks again. For y'know. Helping me." You smile.
"No problem, easy enough to deal with a drunk." He shrugged. "And he looked like he was about to hurt you, so I had to do... something."
"Well I'm glad you did that something." You chuckle.
Marc cleared his throat and smiled back, a soft thing on his face, really. But it was nice to see.
He moved to stand, "I should, ah… go. Thanks for the coffee." He reached out to hand you a few notes from his wallet, and you declined, gathering the mugs to go wash them.
"Nope, I already said it was on the house." You tell him.
"But–"
"No buts!" You called out as you vanished into the expanse of bookshelves.
When you came back, you noticed that, stacked neatly on the counter, was a bundle of notes, your egg timer sitting neatly atop it, with a post-it note simply saying:
"Tell me your life story next time. Thanks. -Marc."
Aizawa x Autistic Cat-Quirk Reader (gn)
Your quirk allows you to transform into a domestic cat (not breed specific, so whatever breed is your favorite) you don’t really have a time limit for your transformation so you can stay as a cat for however long you like, the drawback is how long it takes for your mind to adjust between the forms.
Whenever you’re stressed, anxious or burnt out you tend to use your quirk and escape from the responsibilities or whatever situation upset you.
The neighborhood you live in is relatively peaceful and some of the people recognize your cat form as the unofficial neighborhood cat.
During the day you work at a cat cafe. Your boss knows about your quirk and how you tend to use it as a tool for your Autism. Your boss allows you to use your quirk at work if you’re getting overwhelmed and doesn’t dock your pay so long as you interact with customers as much as possible.
It was during an attempted robbery of the cafe that you met Aizawa.
One morning a man with a disheveled appearance who was extremely tired looking had come into the cafe along with a blond man with glasses wearing a lot of leather. One of your coworkers had taken their orders and was getting it ready when a guy walked in. This guy had been here the day before and had given you this off vibe.
Recognizing this guy you left the counter and walked into the back office where your boss works. Along with your quirk, you have an ability to sense things about people and animals. That’s why you’re boss hired you because you had told him about one of the cafe cats that was sick and ended up saying that cat’s life.
You told him about the bad vibe you got and he walked out with you and decided to handle it. As the guy got to the register to order your boss stood with a ‘customer service’ smile as he took the guys order.
Due to your cat-like senses, you smelled the gunpowder before anyone had an idea of the guy’s true intentions. You shifted into your cat form and jumped onto the counter by the register and with your back arched and fur standing up your bared your teeth hissing at him.
The guy acted all calm pretending to try to calm an anxious cat and reached for you but you scratched him. He jumped back, seeing the blood from your scratch he got angry and shot a spike from his finger that scratched you as you dodged. He then pulled out a gun and tried to shoot you only for the scruffy man and the blind to expertly take him down.
The police were called and arrested the guy. Turns out he had robbed a few other places. His quirk lets him shoot out small spikes that are laced with a chemical toxin that while isn’t fatal, can cause paralysis, hallucinations, delirium and blackouts.
Aizawa and Hizashi left afterwards and went on with their day. Unknown to them and your coworkers that you had been hit with the guys toxin.
Delirious and confused you somehow managed to leave the cafe and had been wandering around all day. That night the effects had finally wore off but you had gotten yourself lost. Anxious and exhausted you had no idea how to get home so you settled down in an alley to sleep.
After a few minutes you heard some people talking and could smell the scent of cigarette smoke and alcohol. Three dudes had walked into the alley and were smoking when one of them pulled out some illicit drugs.
You tried to sneak away but jumped when you ran into a garbage can. The noise caught their attention as their eyes landed on you. One of them smirked and tried to grab you but missed. Another guy used his quirk to make the weeds under your paws wrap around your leg. The third guy grabbed you by the scruff of your neck and picked you up holding you out in front of him.
The other two laughed and walked over to him “what’s wrong little kitty? We ain’t gonna hurt ‘cha” the plant guy slurred. “We just wanna play” the other guy said. They were about the mess with you when a white banded wrapped around the guys hand.
“I suggest you put the cat down and go home unless you three punks want to go to jail” the bandage released from the guys hand as they looked down the alleyway and saw two glowing red dots. “Aww shit, it’s a pro” the guys fled the area and ran.
You were dropped when they fled and landed roughly. You stood up to get your bearings when a shadow fell over you. You looked up at yellow goggles and black hair. Scared you started walking back with your back arched and hissing. The man knelt down and started clicking his tongue and wiggling his fingers beckoning your towards him.
You didn’t sense any ill intent, slowly you walked towards his outstretched hand and sniffed it. After deeming him friendly enough you pushed your head into his hand. He started scratching your head your purred. He scooped you up into his arms as you rubbed your face into his stubble.
“I remember you, you’re from that cafe, you’re a far ways from home.” You snuggled into him enjoying his scent and purring in bliss. “Alright, alright, I’ll take you home.” The man held you with one arm and used his scarf to swing from a lamppost onto a building. As he ran towards a certain direction all you could do was fixate on the feeling of being in his arms.
After awhile he jumped down from a roof and gently set you down. You looked up noticing the cafe sign above its door. You look back up at him and began rubbing yourself against his legs as a thanks. He chuckled and knelt down giving you a small scratch under your chin. “Such a friendly little one, don’t worry, I’ll come visit once my shifts over, how ‘bout that?” You meowed up at him and purred. After a few more scratches he stood up and left.
You walked along the build towards the back where the cat door was. All the cafe cats had collars that had special chips in them that worked into the buildings security system. The motion detectors installed by the cat door were designed to detect and read the chips to allow the cats to get in and out without setting off the alarms.
You had a choker that had a chip in it so you could use it the same as the cats without being too noticeable. You entered the cafe’s back room and decided to stay the night.
The next morning you woke up when your boss unlocked the door. “Oh (y/n) there you are, I was worried when I couldn’t find you after the incident. I checked the cameras and saw you were hit with that hooligan’s quirk. Are you alright?” Your boss asked.
You just meowed and rubbed against his leg letting him know everything’s fine. Your boss was an old man who was very kind. His wife loved cats and wanted to adopt every stray but they didn’t have enough space so they opened up the cafe and used it as a way to take care of the strays and find homes for them through the cafe’s adoption program.
Your boss was sort of like a grandpa figure to you as his wife loves you as a grandchild. After your boss opened up the front door, your coworkers began to prepare for the morning shift. You walked into the cafe’s dining room and began to play with some of the toys.
A few minutes after opening the bell above the door rang indicating the first customer’s entry. You looked up and saw the saw scruffy man from last night. He walked up to the counter and ordered a coffee and a breakfast sandwich.
You immediately ran over to him and jumped onto the counter and then onto his shoulder. “(Y/n), don’t just jump on someone without warning” your Boss said. “Ah so you must be (y/n), nice to meet you.” The man said as he scratched your chin after sitting down at a table.
After you nuzzled against the man you accidentally transformed back into your human form. Still on your hands and knees your meowed. Your boss then walked over and put his hand on your head and showed you your reflection with the small pocket mirror he keeps on him.
Seeing your reflection you scrambled to your feet and ran away into the back room where the cats sleep and transformed hiding from the embarrassment of your situation. Meanwhile your boss sat down and explained what just happened to Aizawa and told him about your situation. He thanked Aizawa for looking after you.
After having a nice chat and introducing his wife to Aizawa, your boss got up to feed the cats and tending to a few more customers, your boss saw Aizawa leave. Your boss walked into the back room and told you that he left.
You transformed back and groaned about how embarrassed you were. The boss’s wife walked in and smiled as she pat your back. “Don’t worry dear, I doubt that man has any issue with it. There’s no need to be embarrassed about anything, cheer up dear.” She said as she rubbed your back. As you got your apron on and tidied yourself up to look presentable for your next shift the boss’s wife poked her head into the room. “Oh and you should be expecting a call or text from that handsome man asking you out. Make sure to tell me how your date goes” she called as she walked away
Noah Sebastian x Reader
Request: would love a fluffy best friends that totally have loved each other but are scared to admit, maybe do something like if he still streamed. I wish he still did occasionally. 😭♥️♥️
An: this had a little more angst then what I originally planned. Lol but I hope you all enjoy it! I'm living for the Noah requests. 🥰
Also as you can tell I know nothing about twitch. 😂
Noah master list
Warnings: cursing and angst…mostly fluff.
Words: about 2600
Tumblr media
You perk up as you hear the door open and close, breaking the silence of the empty bar. You've been waiting for some customers to show up, hoping to make some decent tips today. You smile as you recognize the familiar faces of Noah and Nicholas.
You grab two glasses and greet them warmly. "My favorite customers! What can I get you?" You ask.
Nicholas hops on the stool next to Noah and scans the deserted place. "How's it going?" He says. "Where's the party at?"
You shrug and hand him a beer. "Covid, Nick… it's hard to get people out these days."
You glance at Noah, who is browsing the canned drinks. His long, dark hair frames his handsome face. You can't help but admire how cute he is, even though you would never tell him that. You and Noah have a platonic friendship, but it's not like any other. You have feelings for him, but you don't want to ruin what you have. You enjoy spending time with him, watching movies, playing games, and teasing him on his live streams. He took a while to figure out that you were the one leaving funny comments on his videos. He cracked up when he realized it was you, especially when you were doing it from his own bedroom.
Sometimes, you would catch him looking puzzled at the screen, wondering who was messing with him. "Who the fuck is this?" He would say, reading one of your messages. "They think they're hilarious."
"Hi sunshine, what are you in the mood for? Beer, white claw, mix drink?"
Noah tucks his hair behind his ears and points at a blackberry-white claw. "That sounds good. Can I have one of those?"
You nod and grab the can from the cooler. You pop it open and slide it over to him.
Conversing with them as you lean on the counter. "So, what's up with you guys today? Any big plans for the night?" You ask.
Noah sighs and takes a sip of his drink. "We just needed a break from the house. It's driving me crazy being stuck in there all the time." He says. "And we wanted to see our favorite bartender, of course!"
"I thought you were working on the album?"
Nicholas nods and rolls his eyes. "Yeah, but then Jolly got into an argument with Noah. We had to pause."
You laugh and raise your eyebrow. You're not surprised that Noah was the problem. He may seem calm and quiet, but he's also a perfectionist who wants to do everything over and over again.
"Noah." You scold. "You're such a drama queen!"
He puts his drink down and leans forward, clasping his hands together as if he's about to confess something. But instead, he whispers, "Fuck off."
You giggle at his remark, rolling your eyes at him. "You're a man-child."
"And you love it." He teases. "Are you coming over after your shift?"
"Maybe."
Nicholas laughs as he watches you lean closer to Noah, pretending to be angry at him. You narrow your eyes and say, "I don't even like you."
Noah gasps and clutches his chest, acting hurt. "Fucking liar!" He exclaims. "You adore me!"
You lean back, crossing your arms over your chest. "What's in it for me?"
Nicholas stands, sneering, tired of the bickering between you and Noah, "I'm gonna use the pisser. Watch my drink, make sure Noah doesn't drug me."
"So," Noah says, smacking his hands on the counter jokingly, "Are you going to?" He asks eagerly, flashing his perfect white teeth in a hopeful smile. He leans closer to you, his dark eyes sparkling with mischief.
"I can't." You bite your bottom lip. "Why do you want me to come over so bad anyway? That's the second time you've asked."
"Nothing." He laughs, "Sometimes I like your company when I stream. The crowd that gets on likes you."
"Probably because I'm amazing." You joke.
Noah takes a sip of his drink, watching you intently as you pick up some glasses to clean.
He sets his can down, "Probably." He agrees quietly but with a hint of seriousness in his tone.
"Hmm?" You question, not hearing him.
"Oh, I just said unlikely." He lies, smirking at you.
You set the glass down and glare at him, "Sometimes I wonder why I hang out with you. You're pretty mean." You know Noah is teasing you, but sometimes you wonder if that's what he really thinks of you.
"You're sensitive as fuck today." His brow raises, but he doesn't ask why you might be feeling that way.
"Maybe you're being an asshole?"
When Nicholas arrives back at the bar, he can sense the tension between you. "What'd you pick a fight with (y/n) too?" His brown eyes look from you to Noah and to his drink. He quickly drinks the rest of it, glaring at Noah for whatever he did to annoy you. "C'mon. Don't be a dick. Let's get out of here." He flashes you a quick smile. "See ya later, (y/n)."
Noah smiles at you again, "Come over!" He doesn't wait for you to respond. He leaves you behind, waving as he exits.
Tumblr media
You didn't go to Noah's house after work. Instead, you went home, made dinner, and cozied on the couch to watch a movie with your dog. You didn't bother texting him; his words had stung. You'd been a loyal friend to him for years, but he didn't seem to appreciate it.
Sometimes, it felt like you were a burden to him or a toy for his amusement. He treated you differently when his friends were around.
When you were alone, however, it was a different story. He was sweet and kind; Noah showered you affectionately, making your heart flutter. But as soon as one of his buddies showed up, he changed. He teased you mercilessly and acted like you were one of the guys. You hated it; you weren't one of the guys. You were a girl who had feelings for him.
Feelings that you wished would disappear, but they didn't. They clung to you like a shadow, haunting you every day. You hoped that maybe one day he would see you as more than a friend, but right now wasn't the right time.
You were just (y/n), his best friend who secretly loved him but would die before admitting it.
An idea clicked in your head; you knew he was streaming tonight. You run to your room, get your laptop, and plop back on the couch, ensuring not to squish your golden retriever, whose mighty perked up over your quick actions.
You're feeling mischievous today. You log into Twitch with a different username and no camera, ready to mess with Noah.
You find his invite and click on it, eager to see his reaction. He's live, looking handsome as ever in his glasses, sweater, and cat ear headphones. His long hair falls over his shoulders as he reads the chat. You pause for a moment, wondering if this is a good idea. But curiosity gets the better of you. You want to know what he says when he thinks you're not listening.
He answers a question from a fan, "Where's (Y/n)?" He shrugs and sips his drink, "I don't know. I think I pissed her off, so she's not joining me tonight. Maybe she'll show up later." He adjusts his glasses and reads another question, "I had a surprise for you guys tonight, but (Y/n) 's not here so no surprise."
You raise an eyebrow and type a question, "Maybe you should be nicer to her." You hit enter and bite your lip, waiting for him to notice. His eyes widen as he reads your message.
"Nicer to her!?" He exclaims, incredulous. "I'm always nice to her. She's one of my best friends." He looks at your username and frowns, "Who are you anyway?"
You smirk and reply, "You weren't very nice at the bar today."
He grins, realizing it's you, "Why are you hiding behind a fake account?"
You mute the movie playing in the background of your living room, amused by his reaction. You decide to play along. "I didn't know how mean I wanted to be. Maybe treat you how you treat me sometimes."
"You didn't even listen to what I said!" He rolls his eyes and laughs sarcastically, "If you're going to do this, you might as well show your pretty face." He challenges you. He glances at his follower count, which is rising rapidly. People love drama, and he knows it. He usually doesn't get this personal on a livestream, but he has some things he wants to say. "Besides, you started it when you said you didn't even like me!"
You scowl at the screen, annoyed by his words. How dare he act innocent? "I have to keep up with your assholeness!" You type back.
He shakes his head and sends you a link to join him on the stream. "You're not fooling anyone anymore. Just join me already."
You sigh, feeling the pressure. You switch to your main account and click the link he sent you. You allow your camera to turn on, and soon enough, your face appears next to his on the screen.
"Happy now?" You ask with more attitude than you intended.
He nods, smiling at the screen. "There you are."
You lean forward, resting your chin on your hands, "What do you want Noah? I don't really feel like talking to you right now."
He looks at you seriously, "Well, I wanted to talk to you about something important. Something I've been meaning to tell you for a long time."
You raise an eyebrow, curious and suspicious. "What?"
He takes a deep breath and says, "I don't want to be your friend anymore." He pauses, feeling nervous.
You instantly feel a gut-wrenching sickness in your stomach, "Fuck you!"
"Wait! Let me finish!" He quickly says. "I like you more than a friend. I've liked you since the day we met, and I've been trying to show you how I feel, but I guess I'm not very good at it and I get scared and I fuck up and then I tease you thinking it's flirting, but it's not working cause it's been four years, and you still haven't caught on, and I'm sorry if I ever hurt you or made you angry. That's never my intention. I just wanted to make you laugh and smile and be happy. I haven't said it directly because I was afraid to lose you, but now I feel like I'm losing you because I won't fucking say it."
You blink, stunned by his words. You don't know what to say or how to react. You look at the chat, which is going wild with comments and emojis. Some are cheering for him, teasing him, and shipping you two.
You realize that he just confessed his feelings for you to thousands of people. You look back at him, searching his eyes for any sign of a joke or a prank. But he seems sincere and nervous, waiting for your response.
You feel your heart beating faster and your face heating up. You wonder if he can hear it through the microphone. You open your mouth, but no words come out. You're speechless.
"God, dammit, Noah. I'm facetiming you. Get off your live."
Tumblr media
You're nervous and excited as you sit beside Noah on his Twitch stream. It's been a week since he confessed his feelings for you. You've decided to go public with your relationship, and you're ready to face his fans' reactions.
You sway back and forth in your chair, waiting for the screen to load. Noah rests his hand on your leg, giving you a gentle squeeze. "You OK?" He asks, looking at you with concern.
You nod your head, smiling at him. "Yeah. I'm good. Are you sure you want to tell everyone now?" You ask, feeling a bit nervous.
He nods, grinning at you. "It's been a week. I think they've waited long enough." He says, referring to the cliffhanger he left on his last stream.
He pulls you closer to him and kisses your cheek. You giggle and lean on his shoulder, feeling his warmth and heartbeat.
The computer dings, and the chat has started. You pull your head back from Noah's tattooed arm and sit straight, ready to face the camera. Hundreds of messages pop up on the screen, asking about you and Noah, wondering if you're together or not.
Noah looks at you with a reassuring smile and wraps his arm around your waist. He leans in and whispers in your ear, "Ready to do this, babe?" He calls you by the nickname he gave you when you started dating. You feel affection for him and nod, blushing. He kisses your forehead and turns to the camera, greeting his fans.
"Hey guys, welcome! I hope you're all doing well. As you can see, I have a special guest with me today." He says, gesturing to you. "My now girlfriend." He announces proudly, making your heart skip a beat. He looks at you with love in his eyes and smiles. "Say hi, babe."
You wave at the camera and say hi, feeling shy but happy. You see the chat explode with comments, some congratulating you two, some expressing shock or disbelief, some asking questions or making jokes.
You feel overwhelmed by the attention, but Noah holds you tight and makes you feel safe. He answers some of the questions from the fans, what he likes about you, what you love about him.
Noah tells them about the surprise he had planned for them on the night he confessed his feelings for you: He was going to sing a song for you on the stream, which he wrote for you. He says he still wants to do it if you don't mind.
You nod, feeling touched by his gesture. He smiles and kisses your nose, making you giggle. He grabs his guitar from behind him and strums a few chords.
Clearing his throat, he starts singing about how much you mean to him and how happy you make him. Some other sappy things that you weren't expecting from him.
He looks at you as he sings, making eye contact every few seconds. You feel tears as you listen to his beautiful voice and heartfelt lyrics.
You smile and mouth, "I love you."
He smiles back and mouths, "I love you too." He finishes the song and puts down his guitar. He wraps his arms around you and hugs you tightly, kissing your cheek. He turns to the camera and says goodbye to his fans, thanking them for their support and kind words.
He says he'll see them next time, but he wants to spend some time with his girlfriend. Noah winks at the camera and ends the stream.
He turns off the computer and looks at you with a sweet expression. "How was that?"
"That was amazing." You say sincerely, holding your hands to your heart nearly melting.
"I'm glad you liked it."
You snuggle into his chest and sigh contentedly, throwing your legs over his lap. You gently grab the sides of his face and kiss him, feeling like you're living your best dream. "It was perfect."
I COMBED MY HAIR for the twentieth time that night, trying to disguise the frizz starting to build up in my long, black hair.
the big white clock on the glittery wall of my small room read 8:30 p.m, and nari, my best friend, hadn't made an appearance at the front door, lacking even her usual honk – a playful annoyance i had come to expect. that only meant one thing: she was too busy swallowing heeseung's mouth to remember to pick me up.
gazing into the mirror, i observed my precarious false eyelashes, a skill i'd mastered over time, now unstable, poised to detach. the subtle pink gloss on my lips was barely distinguishable from the natural color of them, and my blush made me look like i'd been slapped in the face. god, when did i get so bad at makeup?
reminiscing, i once held the title of sephora's most loyal customer, just as i dominated every store that tested my mom's credit card limits. however, that was all before she whisked me across the country. precisely one year ago, i hastily packed everything, boarding the first train to busan – akin to a real refugee. was it foolish? perspectives vary. the optimal choice? perhaps not. regret? not in the slightest.
my mother took me to a small village in the hills, where people didn't live so much with materialistic things and the atmosphere was more conservative. my appearance, in turn, was much lighter and more natural while i lived there. that’s probably why now i couldn’t even use a bronzer without looking stupid. it seemed that all the beauty tricks i had learned from vogue had gone down the drain.
i was too focused on correcting my dark circles with concealer when a sharp, deafening horn blared through the house, causing me to shake completely at the sudden sound and nearly go blind from the concealer that had stuck to my eye. nari, that bastard. she knew what she was doing.
— tell her i'm coming! — i shouted downstairs with no response.
i hurriedly grabbed my bag, put everything i thought i needed into it, put on my coat, took one more look in the mirror and flew out the door.
when i got to the living room, i saw my younger sister, iseul, propped up on the big mint-colored sofa munching on chips and watching "the penthouse" for the twenty-fourth time. this 14-year-old brat never did anything at home.
— could you, hum, for the first time in your life, be useful for something other than finishing off my chips? — i warned her. the youngest just gave me a debauched, childish look.
— you've been back for less than 24 hours and you already want to be the housewife?! relax, sis. — the audacity!
— when mom sees this greasy sofa, i want to see who's going to relax. — i hastily closed the door. i knew very well that my mother would go crazy when she saw it. the chips weren't even hers, dammit.
iseul had always been a cheeky child, but i never thought that a year away would make her any worse. she was impossible to live with, and i hadn't even spent that much time with her since i arrived, but it was enough to find her unbearable.
i ran over to nari's car, the black hyundai was still exactly the same, although it had a few more scratches than usual. nari loved to go on adventures, she was crazy.
i opened the car door and the familiar smell of vanilla filled my nostrils. so many memories in this car, my god. it seems like yesterday that my first drink ended in vomit on these very seats, there's still a little brown stain on them. and that time we ran afoul of the police for attempted trespassing? that was definitely the best, don't ask me why. we were very angry and annoying teenagers, at least under the influence of alcohol.
— y/n, my love, how i've missed you! — nari practically swallowed me up in a tight, cozy hug, and i don't know how she didn't break her back the way she squirmed all over the front seat. i hugged her even tighter, i missed her so much. we talked every day by facetime during the time i was away, but nothing matched having my best friend in the flesh by my side. i had been looking forward to this moment for months.
i met jeong nari in the first year of elementary school, when before she was the best-known girl in the school, she was still the girl that wore glitter elastics and bottle-bottom glasses. she helped me rebuild my sandcastle when a stupid older boy destroyed it with his footsteps, and we've been inseparable ever since. nari was the funniest girl i knew, it was impossible not to burst out laughing when i was next to her. even in the worst, most inconvenient situations, i would piss myself laughing whenever she opened her mouth.
she was the kind of girl who didn't need to make an effort for people to like her, who attracted attention even without any intentions. unlike most of the snobbish girls at my school, who tried to make it to the top by being cheap copies of regina george, nari stood out for being the most generous, fun person ever. she could go to school in a sweatshirt and bobsponge pants and easily still be the prettiest girl there. when you needed her, she was just there. always there. that's why she was so well-known, so loved. she was a ray of sunshine in such a dark city. there wasn't a single day that i didn't admire her, she was the best person ever. the spotlight was always on her face, her gorgeous face. not only was she popular, she was also extremely intelligent, her place at seoul university was already guaranteed. she really had it all, she was everything.
and i... well, you could say i was just... there. unlike jeong, i was the most sociably awkward girl seoul high had. not that i was an 80-year-old who spent her free time reading books in the living room in front of the chimney, not at all. i was just...me. although most of my senior year knew who y/n was, i was mostly known "nari's friend". not that it bothered me at all! i loved going unnoticed, living my life quietly and not having my name on everyone's lips every weekend. that is, with the exception of this one, for obvious reasons. "nari's friend is back in busan after 1 year completely missing" will be in the local papers, if you doubt it.
— i missed you too, girl. — i kissed her on the cheek as i undid the hug, not even remembering that heeseung was watching the intimate moment. — hi to you too, man. — i smiled slightly while we shaked our hands.
— it's good to see you again, y/n. — he said, smiling. lee heeseung was the classic heartthrob from every cliché movie, easily having all the girls in the world at his feet with a wink. the perfect match for nari, literally. i'm not sure how the two of them met, i've only been told that another friend of ours introduced them and since then they've been stuck together with permanent glue. cute. too cute.
i snuggled into the seat, preparing myself for the short journey. we were going to my supposed welcome party, according to nari herself. but in reality, i knew it was just another of jay's weekend parties at his luxurious mansion, and they'd taken the opportunity to stick me there. seriously, there weren't even enough people who knew me to fill a party in a house that size. but i was grateful for the attempt.
i spent the whole trip gossiping with my best friend, and surprisingly heeseung, about my boring and uninteresting life in busan for the whole year. unlike normal teenagers, who used to have the best experiences of their lives when they went to another city or abroad, i had nothing. as always, my life was so boring. the most exciting story i had was when i had to chase a flock of sheep down a mountain and almost died. wow. they couldn't even hide how sorry they were that my year had been so bad, even though nari made hilarious jokes about my misfortune. they also gave me all the updates about our (un)loved classmates, and no chance that yerim from english class was pregnant?! and that miyeong had cheated on her boyfriend with her neighbor?! i swear, my school was definitely not normal. about three hundred rich, snobbish teenagers together in one place, who even thought that would be a good idea? every week there was a new scandal, it was pure chaos.
another ten minutes or so and we arrived at the park house, music blaring from inside. i was always impressed by jay's ability to convince his neighbors, all of whom were just old men who surely went to bed at eight o'clock at night, not to call the police. when i was little, even using my little ukulele in the garage at four in the afternoon caused problems. having money has its advantages, i guess. we all got out of the car after nari parked.
— now, let me look at you properly, girl. — nari picked me up and spun me around like a doll, making me dizzy with so many pirouettes. — oh god, you look so gorgeous!
and look at that ass! have you been exercising, like… mountain climbing? — she joked, making me turn redder than i already was with that ridiculous blush. while she thought i was hot, i thought i was a bit fat, but i would never confess that out loud.
she looked at me like a proud mother, as if i were her baby who had just taken her first steps or said her first word. she was just like that, more dramatic than usual. — seriously y/n, you look more beautiful than ever. — the girl repeated, and if i didn't know better, i'd swear that her teary eyes were real. i didn't understand what all the compliments were about, after all, i didn't look very stunning. i wasn't wearing anything extravagant or attention-grabbing. i was wearing a black mini skirt, which was almost not mini at all, a white corset that was almost crushing my bones, and a black leather jacket. the most basic outfit you could wear for a night out. there must have been at least ten girls in the same outfit as me in there. probably more attractive, but still.
i even tried to dress up a bit more and try to look more attractive, but the sequined dress made me look like a mirrorball, not to mention all the other dresses i tried on and they all made me look like what i did best: pathetic. i just gave up on the idea, preferring to go in a more comfortable way. well, apart from the fact that i wasn't very comfortable. but if i really came the way i wanted, i'd be laughed at. who would wear a minnie sweatshirt to a party? one way or another, as soon as i stepped inside that mansion, i was going to seriously regret my fashion decisions by comparing myself to the other girls, it was something habitual already. i didn't even have to go in, because the dress nari was wearing, which made her look like a real angel, made me regret ever coming. i was just...me, again. at least my clothes were good, but they weren't outstanding, like always.
i breathed heavily as we headed for the door, nervousness taking over my body once again. y/n, it was just a fucking party. a party that, by the way, didn't even focus on me. all i needed to do for the next few hours was smile and pretend that my months away had actually been interesting. as i was the most awkward girl ever, it certainly wasn't going to end well.
heeseung opened the big door, and the music that was already blaring throughout the condominium just blared in my ears, making me almost deaf. i walked down the long corridor with great difficulty, having to apologize every time i took a step for accidentally bumping into someone. for god's sake, there were at least a thousand people there. how could a place full of hormonal teenagers, dripping with sweat and with disgusting alcohol breath, attract anyone? well, i couldn't answer, because i only knew the answer when i was already under the influence of shots of vodka. while the alcohol wasn't injecting itself into my veins, which was when i become a completely different person, i just sat on the sofa, waiting for someone to talk to. i only became sociable under the influence of alcohol, something i started using to try not to be so introverted. needless to say, it went horribly wrong; i even had my stomach pumped. my parents still won't talk about it. fair enough.
i sighed heavily for the thirtieth time inside that house, when we passed the death row and saw someone we knew. it was none other than park sunghoon, one of heeseung's best friends and also one of the best ice skaters in high school. as well as being talented, he was also very attractive, although his jokes were never funny. we hardly ever exchanged a word, only in biology lessons from time to time, when he didn't know what page was in the book. apart from these interactions, i rarely spoke to him, but we had many friends in common.
— nari, heeseung. — the tall boy announced, greeting the two as if they were great partners. i mean, they really were, i just wasn't aware of his sudden closeness to my best friend. he looked at me, as if i were some kind of exotic animal he'd never seen before, and smiled after a while. — y/n, i see you're back. did you like boston?! — he said in a calm voice, barely able to understand his words in all the noise.
— busan, i went to busan. — i said out loud. boston?! for heaven's sake. he looked at me, his pupils more dilated than the milky way. well, at least he hadn't changed one bit. even though i wasn't his friend, all the students at seoul high knew about sunghoon's love for weed. and it was clear to see. he started laughing at himself. — yes, that's it, busan... did you like it?
i forced a smile, trying not to look unpleasant. — you have no idea. — he nodded, even though i was sure he hadn't heard a word i'd said. but it was okay, he seemed too drugged to understand, or drunk. i felt sorry for his stomach. and for him too, the next day he was going to wake up with a head heavier than a stone.
he exchanged a few more words with lee and disappeared like dust into the crowd, leaving the three of us alone again. nari approached me.
— hee and i are going to talk to the basketball team, do you want to come? — i tried my best to understand, the seoul accent not helping my thinking. the basketball team, although good at what they did, were too noisy for my liking. when they weren't disturbing everyone's class with the noise of their balls on the court, they were making a complete mess of the school corridors.
— no thanks sweetie, i'll be fine here. — i lied. no, i wouldn't be fine over there. i hardly knew anyone, not well enough to hang out at a party for a while. i wasn't even planning on drinking that night.
— are you sure?
— yes, don't worry, i'll call you. — i reassured her. did i even have a battery in my phone? i didn't even bother to check it before i left the house, what a responsible daughter i was.
she just smiled at me, probably tired of screaming in my ear, and the couple disappeared. i was completely alone now. i looked around. rihanna's "don't stop the music" was blasting everywhere, while all i could see was people rubbing up against each other. gross. i preferred to leave that pornographic scene and headed for the kitchen. well, at least the kitchen i remembered being in the house. i'd be pretty screwed if he'd changed the rooms.
i was hoping that the situation would ease up a bit in the kitchen, but it was the same, if not worse. people making out, kegs of beer in every corner, drinking games, some questionable attitudes, just another normal night in this house. i headed for the sink, where i hoped to find fresh water, which was all i needed at the moment. i don't know if i needed a glass or a whole barrel of it, but i definitely needed it. i filled a plastic cup, which was certainly covered in sexually transmitted diseases or questionable fluids, with water. i drank it in two seconds, not even realizing how thirsty i was.
i was about to put the second glass in my mouth when someone spoke up next to me.
— y/n. — someone spoke, and i immediately recognized that voice as more annoying than my algebra teacher. it was nishimura ri-ki, my seatmate. the most annoying person on this planet, universe if you ask me.
— in flesh and blood. — i tried to sound as nonchalant as possible with my answer, certainly failing. ri-ki was not only the most annoying person in the world, but also the most chatty. his soul was like that of a gossipy old lady, always talking. if she even said anything at all, it was only to pick on me.
— i can see my daily rest is over. — he said in a tone that was too sarcastic for my liking. i raised an eyebrow.
— i beg your pardon? who spends all their lessons talking about their lego cars instead of paying attention? — i asked, intrigued. he just laughed, something that wasn't very common in our regular conversations.
— that never happened. — he said resolutely. of course, it never happened. just as it never happened that he almost got kicked out of class for painting his fingernails. it definitely never happened.
— yes, ri-ki, that never happened. — he looked at me strangely, i probably looked crazy. his expression softened, and he quickly walked away with a slight smile.
— enjoy the party.
did nishimura ri-ki just smile at me? not to make fun of me, or laugh at my misfortune? boy, things were different around here. very different. i decided not to make a big deal out of it, i just assumed he was drunk too. i leaned against the bar and looked around, anxious for the time to leave.
i was bored, trying to recognize the faces around me, which by the way were all the same, despite slight changes, like how wonyoung was blonde or how jeno had stopped wearing his glasses. strange. i analyzed every corner of the room, remembering everyone who was there. i knew all the details of their lives, but they didn't even know my surname if they were lucky. if i hadn't become friends with nari, i probably wouldn't even be allowed in here…but god must have blessed me, he knew i'd been through enough humiliation. but it was still a bit of a shame. sitting on a balcony completely alone while everyone else seemed to be having the time of their lives wasn't much fun, nor was it new. it happened almost all the time, especially when i didn't have nari to distract me.
i was about to fall asleep leaning against the fridge when something caught my attention. in a far corner was a large group of boys, probably athletes due to the width of their shoulders. just like everyone else in there, they were getting drunk and definitely laughing out loud at something that shouldn't even be funny. it was a huge group, about 15 guys. i watched each one, fully remembering everyone. they were almost all part of jay, sunghoon and heeseung's group, which, by the way, was the most popular in high school. surprise? i don't think so. it was too clichéd, it felt like i was in a cheap version of high school musical. i'd like to believe that i was gabriella, but deep down i know that i was just an extra in other people's lives.
jesus, even that boy who barely opened his mouth, lee sohee, seemed to be integrating very well into that circle of friends. and soobin... hadn't he been transferred? i needed to catch up on the gossip urgently.
nothing was catching my eye apart from the large hickey on one of their necks, which didn't shock me at all, until i laid eyes on one of them.
suddenly, it felt like an electric charge all over my body, every hair standing on end. my heart, which was already heavy, accelerated to its maximum, bringing me close to a heart attack. it was like losing all the strength in my muscles at once, only not collapsing thanks to the support of the wall behind me. my lungs were deprived of air, causing me to gasp within seconds. it wasn't just any teenager, it was him.
his eyes met mine, and i could have sworn that for the tiniest second, the whole house fell silent. as if all the walls had shrunk and were crushing both my body and my soul. it was really him.
yang jungwon.
even in that dark crowd, i could see his features perfectly. my god, he looked exactly the same. perhaps a little darker, but it was still him. completely him. not an evil twin or a trick of my own mind, it was him. beautiful as always. my heart almost leapt out of my mouth when his smile fell as soon as he noticed me, as if i had sucked up all the happiness. well, i technically did. not at that moment, perhaps, but definitely a year ago, when i disappeared without a trace. when i left him hanging outside my house for hours, while i was already in another city. when i didn't answer any more of his messages. when i literally took his pure heart and shattered it into a thousand pieces.
the eye contact, which made me sick, only lasted a few seconds, as he immediately turned to his friends. but it was enough to make my emotions run wild. the regret of being there only tripled, i was about to throw up. all the memories of my actions were turning my stomach, it felt like i'd drunk a whole barrel of beer.
the world was about to collapse, i needed to get out of there urgently. i rushed outside, disoriented by the huge halls. i didn't even care about bumping into people anymore, i wanted them to fuck off. i just needed some fresh air to free my lungs, which were about to explode. i didn't have asthma, but i was faithfully considering a diagnosis. i ran in as clumsily as possible, narrowly escaping a glass of drink falling on me. don't these people have any manners?
when i finally reached a large balcony, it was as if a weight had been lifted off me. fortunately, i was alone. perfect. i sat down on the small purple sofa, crossed my legs and let myself sink into my thoughts. i was about to have a psychotic break.
yang jungwon, literally the love of my life, had pretended that my existence was null and void after a year without any contact. i mean, morally correct, he did more than he should have. if i had been in his position, i wouldn't even have bothered to look at myself. what was i expecting? a kiss and a bunch of flowers? after all the shit i've done? boy, i was really a fool. fool to believe that he would forgive me, if i didn't even believe it. i just talked myself out of it all year so that the guilt would subside. deep down, i knew i was more guilty than a murderer. and for a year, it was really the only thing i felt. something that consumed me every day in an exhausting way, eating me alive. just thinking about every call denied, every message ignored... my heart shrunk like a helpless animal.
i remember that day for the twentieth time.
it was early in the morning and i was clearly upset and fed up with my life. all i wanted to do was disappear, and so i did. no advance warning, nothing... i just vanished like magic into thin air. i tried to make excuses in my head, but there simply weren't any. i was just an idiot.
i was trapped inside my own head when i felt a hand on my shoulder. i flinched, startled by the sudden movement. i was about to punch person when i realized it was nari, great relief bursting from my lips.
— you’re here! i have been looking for you everywhere!
her face, which until then had been laughing, quickly turned into a sad expression when her eyes met mine. damn, was i that ugly for everyone to change their mood when they looked at me?
she sat down on the sofa next to mine, remaining silent for a few moments, with only the muffled sound of pitbull's "she doesn't mind" echoing in the background. i didn’t knew what to say.
— you saw him, didn't you? — those words came out almost as a whisper, as if she was afraid of my answer. i took a long pause.
— yes, i did.
— are you okay? — she asked calmly.
— i’m fine. — i said harshly. i didn't want to talk about it, because i knew i'd end up in tears. i didn’t want to be seen crying all over school on the first day back. actually, i didn't want to expose my feelings, because i knew that once i started, i'd never stop.
she came closer, enveloping me in a warm hug. god, i loved her hugs.
— you know i'm here for you, don't you? for everything. — she said firmly. i admired her so much.
— i know, nari, and i love you for it. but i'm fine, seriously. — she looked at me again. i knew that look. she felt sorry for me, as if i were someone without any hope. well, maybe i was. the hug lasted a few more seconds before i pulled away from her. the warmth of the hug quickly turned cold, the gentle wind giving me goosebumps. i was so focused on the situation that i didn't even notice it was freezing outside.
— he's in the garden. i saw him a few minutes ago. — and with that comment, she stood up and disappeared back into the crowd.
she knew perfectly well what she was doing, torturing me psychologically. she knew how much i wanted to talk to him, and how much i would fight against my will. if my impulses were faster than my neurons, i'd be out of here by now. but i couldn't, i just couldn't. i wanted it, oh god, i wanted it more than anything. but i couldn't. i just sat there, my ass already sore from sitting there for so long.
time passed and passed, and that thought didn't leave me for a second. i tried everything. i tried creating random couples on the dance floor, i tried counting how many blue plastic cups there were in that house... i really did. but it was swallowing me up.
i couldn't stand it any longer and got up.
fuck this shit.
i passed through the disgusting crowd once again, this time like a real hurricane. i was getting used to it. i ran as if my life depended on it, until i reached the garden.
just as my best friend said, there he was. on his back, leaning against one of the pillars of the house's white façade, watching the sky, which was full of stars. he was obsessed with astronomy. even from the back he was handsome. was that even possible?
once again, my heart began to beat excessively. my hands were shaking more and more with every step i took, my legs were weak. the desire to stay and the desire to flee were fighting each other in a brutal way. i needed to do that. i needed to find an end point. seeing my life flash before me, i leaned against his side.
— hi.
my voice came out trembling. i didn't dare look at him, but i could feel his eyes watching me, burning my face like lasers. i waited for an answer, but nothing came out of his mouth, as expected.
he took a packet out of his jeans pocket and took out a cigarette, lighting it in front of me. the act surprised me a little, as the jungwon i knew was the biggest hater of smokers. he was acting as if i wasn't even there. childish, but i couldn't judge him.
— ignorance game, got it. — i said it without thinking twice.
he let the air out of his lungs with extreme ease. the disgusting smell quickly reached my nostrils, making my nose twitch.
— i thought you liked that game. — ouch. the ease with which those words came out of his mouth hit me like a sharp knife. who was that and what had happened to my jungwon?
— i don’t.
— well…— he paused. —…i guess i was wrong.
— you are wrong about many things. — i attacked.
i was expecting a reaction, but all i heard was his laughter. even though i wasn't looking at him, i could picture his dimples perfectly.
— thank god that’s something that we both agree. — i didn't understand his metaphor.
silence quickly filled the garden again.
various things were going through my head, but no words seemed good enough to say out loud. i just wanted to end it once and for all. i turned to him, finally seeing his handsome figure, and then, at the speed of light, i let words slip out. i spoke so fast at that moment that i could easily be considered eminem's daughter.
— look, jungwon im sorry. i never meant to hurt y….
— stop. — his rough voice echoed at a higher volume, cutting off my speech in a harsh manner.
i tried again.
— no, let me apologize, i’m really sorr….
— i don’t need your apology for shit. — oh. he used a curse word. yang rarely used cuss words like that, it was a warning. he was pissed. i was fucked.
— i can explain, please…
— your explanation date has expired. — he just kept cutting off my hopes, one by one.
— please, just hear me! — the desperation was noticeable in my tone.
i was sure that if someone were watching this scene, they'd laugh at me. i was making a fool of myself. i looked like i'd gone back to the age of 5 and was asking my mother for ice cream in the supermarket. how pathetic.
— i’d rather be deaf than listen to your voice again. get the fuck out of here. — he was definitely losing patience. but i couldn't give up. each insult hurt me more.
— no jungwon, please, listen to me just for a second. — i was ready to kneel in front of him and kiss his feet. maybe i'd be stoned in a public square for my sins. i just needed him to listen to me, just once.
— if you dont go i will. — he gave me an ultimatum.
i wasn't going anywhere.
i stood there, about a meter away from him, static. i wasn't going to leave, not again.
realizing that i wasn't going to disappear from his sight, he just shook his head, turned on his heels and headed into the house. the roles were reversed. it would be comical if it weren't tragic.
my blood boiled. why the fuck was he being like this? i could feel the anxiety and fear being filled with anger. i was getting sick of it.
— so, its that? you just run from your problems? — i screamed with all my will, hoping it would reach his ears in the middle of all the noise.
he instantly stopped. it definitely hit him.
i saw his silhouette turn. he approached me slowly, without saying anything. i trembled completely. he seemed to be struggling with his own thoughts.
— who the fuck do you think you are? — it came out almost as a whisper. a gentle breeze that reached me like a hurricane.
i felt my insides squirm.
— excuse me? — i said, not believing it. i felt so tiny next to him.
— you heard what i said. — if looks could kill, i'd already be decomposing.
— who the actual fuck you think you are? do you think you are that important to come to this party wich, by the way, you werent even invited, and just decide that i exist again?
— you always existed to me.
— stop. im sick of your bullshit. — the only one who was sick there was me. i wanted to throw up.
— it’s not bullshit, i swear.
— oh really? thats not what it looked like in the last 12 months. — it was as if i had ripped the entire vocabulary out of my mind with that sentence. i didn't know what to say. i only could utter apologies.
— look, i’m so sorry, i didn’t meant to. i’m so sorry, i shouldn't have done that.
— no, you did the right thing. it made me realize who you really were. they only thing you shouldn’t had did was come back here.
i could feel the tears threatening to come out.
— i was very unhappy with myself, you can't imagine. i had family and addiction problems, all i wanted to do was get away from this place...i was losing my mind.
he laughed evilly.
— and you still have the nerve to accuse me of running away from my problems? i've realized what you are.
— what am i….?
— a fucking psycho. what did you think, hm? that you would come back and i would see you and your pretty face and run away to your arms? no y/n, im sorry to break your little fantasy, but that is not happening. im not doing this again. — he raised his voice, practically screaming at me. i could see how angry he was.
— you have to believe me, i never had the intentions….
— imagine if you had. — he laughed at his own joke. it was driving me crazy.
— i’m being serious jungwon, i never meant to hurt y…
— gosh you are so annoying! — he finally exploded. — for god’s sake! can’t you just take responsability for your actions and stop acting like a twelve years old for a moment in your life? stop trying to find excuses to it, just stop!
— i was stressed, okay?! my life was falling apart, i needed to go! — i was screaming too without even realizing it.
— right, how convenient of you.
fucker.
— you know what? it's not because your life is perfect that others have it too. it's not my fault that i wasn't born into the same world as spoiled rich people like you.
— my life is not perfect. — he shot back.
— oh really? i'm sorry, your life must be really bad for your only concern to be which car you're going to choose for your 18th birthday. i’m really sorry, it must be really hard for you, poor jungwon.
i vividly remember all the moments when i realized that yang and i were from different realities. like when he went to school by private car while i had to wake up every day at 5am to catch the bus, or when his bedroom was twice the size of my entire house. i always felt bad about it, even though he said it wouldn't change anything in our relationship. and it was true. but still, i felt bad everytime i stepped into that house. that seemed to move him. he briefly paused the discussion.
— yea, my life is fucking perfect. my mother died in a car accident three months ago and my family's company is close to bankruptcy. but you're right, my life is perfect.
i froze. i could feel his voice trembling. my god, poor jungwon. he loved his mother more than anything. mrs. yang was the sweetest person i knew, not counting her son. how come i didn't get this news? oh my god.
— i’m so sorry, i didn’t kn….
— that’s exactly your fucking problem! you didn’t knew! you didn’t even care to know! — he was in pain. he had every right to.
— don’t say that, i always cared about you!
— no the fuck you don’t, you only care about yourself. when things don't go your way, you cry like a baby. this is not a fairy tale, y/n!
my fist itched to punch him. he was being so cruel. but was he lying? no. i really was childish. there was nothing i hated more than not having my plans the way i wanted them to be, i lose a neuron every time something goes backfired.
— i’m telling you, i was in trouble. how many times do i have to repeat? — i was getting tired of screaming. my voice was already getting hoarse.
— and that’s how you deal with your shit?! you just run away without thinking about others? wow — he started clapping at me. — how empathetic of you.
— you wouldn’t understand me, i was afraid of telling you…— no i wasn’t. i just simply didn’t want to. i didn’t wanted to bother.
— i was your fucking boyfriend! that’s what we are supposed to do, be there for each other no matter what!
he couldn't get enough.
— i know it, i know you were! — i approached him, hoping to find some forgiveness in his eyes. but nothing, nothing but hatred.
— you’re right, i was there for everything. and if i wasn’t, was because you didn’t wanted me to. now let me ask, y/n. — he paused. — when was the last time that you were there for me?
he asked me the rhetorical question, remaining silent for a few seconds. — ‘cause if i can remember, you left me at my worst.
i had a lump in my throat. i could think of nothing. i couldn't do this for much longer. i was as fragile as a glass vase, about to break at any moment.
— i am so, so sorry. there hasn't been a day when i haven't thought about the shit i've done. please, i'm so sorry…— i grabbed his hand, hoping to find some sign of life in that dead love, some hope. but nothing, absolutely nothing. it was empty.
he stared at me for a few seconds, as if he were studying me. god... those eyes. they were the death of me. i kept stroking his hand, seeking warmth in the midst of his coldness.
for a moment, i could have sworn that something inside him changed, as if he had softened.
i was beginning to believe that his next move would be a kiss because of the way he approached me. i could hear my heart beating as loudly as the jbl speakers at the party. had i succeeded? had this story come to an end?
he let go of my hand.
— well, i hope that haunts you for the rest of your life. i hope it's on your mind every second, minute, hour, month, year, decade. i hope it torments you so much that it drives you insane. i hope you never forgive yourself, just as i don't. ever.
as always, all my expectations were violently snatched away from me by fate.
i was about to fall off the cliff, i mean, to be thrown off it.
— jungwon, it is not that deep. — the words came out of my mouth faster than my mind would let them. like a bucket of cold water, they fell on him like sharp knives.
his eyes filled with tears. i had hit rock bottom.
— not that deep, you said. — his voice broke. — y/n, i i loved you. did you even realize that? — he paused again. i was fighting back tears.
— i loved you with every bone, muscle and cell in my heart. i loved you with all my strength. i loved all your traits, both physical and psychological, even the ones you hated. i loved your fucking sensitive and stubborn personality. i loved your laugh and also the hilarious way you cry. i loved the way you tie your cords and the way you eat cereal in the morning. i loved you drunk, drugged, crying, sleepy and sick. i loved you from the moment i first saw you in the library. i loved you with my whole soul. and all you managed to do was kill that love.
tears rolled down his face like a real ocean, his face was red. even in that state he was the most beautiful boy i had ever seen. i didn't look any different, i had surrendered to my sadness from the moment he said the first three words. it was hurting me so much, more than any physical pain i've ever felt. not even breaking my leg in fourth grade made me cry so much.
— i loved you too, i loved you so much. — i confesed. i used to love him so much.
i still did.
he was the first and only boy i truly loved, with all my heart. he was the first boy i trusted with my body, my trust, my soul. he was the love of my life, but perhaps not the love for my life.
— no, you didn’t. because when you love someone, you don't do shit that hurts them. ever. and that's the only thing you knew how to do. — he was totally sobbing. we were like two children fighting over a toy.
— please, i know i hurted you, let me reward you. we can fix this, we can if we want…— i was so desperate. i couldn't let him go, i just couldn't.
he took a step back. shit.
— that’s the thing, i don’t want to. i never want to have anything to do with you again. i don't want to be near you, to breathe, to talk. i don't even want to exist in the same place as you never again in my life. do you hear me? i will ensure that your existence is as significant as an ant.
i felt like i'd just been hit in the back of the head with a brick. my vision was blurred, i was dizzy, helpless. my make-up was smeared and my hair was tangled.
it felt like my whole life had been sucked out of me.
it wasn't happening, it wasn't. it couldn't be happening. it had to be some kind of prank. the tears came out of me automatically, i almost drowned in them.
— now, do me and everyone in this town a favor and disappear. again.
and with that, he turned his back on me and went into the mansion.
— but i still love you. — i yelled one last time.
he stopped, and turned his head.
— that is your problem.
My honest reactions of episodes 5 and 6 (part 2)
PART 1 : HERE
(‼️ SEASON 4 SPOILERS ‼️)
.
.
.
.
.
.
Okay I just HAD to devote the full Alibert inn scene from episode 5 here CUZ WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT YUGO GOING BACK TO EMELKA!! I know I already mentioned Chibi and Grougal (as well as the tree Tofu tower) in part 1 but part 2 will basically be about all the rest of the inn scene cuz tumblr couldn’t let me have more than ten images per post (I know the site apparently lets u have more but I always use the phone for it so shush.)
But first, we finally get to see Alibert again after all those years 💕
Tumblr media
Alibert. Sweetie. Baby. You can take care of two (technically four) kids with the addition of a freaking INN, you COOK for the customers, AND, ON TOP OF ALL THAT, you’re the MAYOR of EMELKA, that same place where you run the inn and take care of your adopted sons.
You do much more than just “taking care of an inn”, you got three jobs AND you’re still sane. You’re three in one, a whole package, props to you king. He’s such a boss ass man I love him 💕💕
Tumblr media
NAH MAN
Not these ppl trying to avoid the inflation 😭😭 I don’t blame them tho. I would’ve said the same thing lol.
(Also is the wine a call back to Gustavio? Plz it would be so funny if the reason why Alibert is angry is cuz these ppl are saying how “bad” it is just so the prices can stay the same but also because he’s mad that they’re calling Gustavio’s wine “disgusting” even if they were all just trying to make him not raise the prices!)
Tumblr media
Love how Yugo doesn’t say that same shit to Ruel after all those years of cooking for his ass and never getting anything from him.
Like even the whole Brotherhood calls Ruel a “cheapskate” but the only time where we see Yugo say that same shit is when he says that to his own CUSTOMERS?!?
Gurl bye Yugo’s such a silly little hypocrite!! 😭😭
OMG THE WHOLE FAMILY’S BACK TOGETHER!!
Tumblr media
Adamaï get your stupid lizard ass over here.
It’s been so long since I’ve seen these two just laughing and hugging like this 💕💕💕
Also, Ankama tried being very slick with Az and his wife.
Nah cuz how can you not see these two and not think about Yugo and Amalia?? Does the thought never come to mind or what??
They literally give off the same energy, how did no one say anything before???!!?
Tumblr media
THESE LITTLE TOFUS ARE OBVIOUSLY A SILLY PARALLEL TO THESE TWO AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME OTHERWISE.
Okay now the next part of the Alibert inn scene is very important to me so listen.
Recently, I came scrolling on @moths-are-better’s recent posts about Yugo and I came up on the one where he drinks the “milk” that was in the cup in the scene below.
Tumblr media
But like-
@moths-are-better STOP LYING TO YOURSELF THIS IS CLEARLY WINE!!!
Look at all the other people drinking in the inn before they left: they all had that same kind of cup, insinuating that they were drinking wine (and also cuz they confirmed it was wine while trying to avoid any possible future inflations with Alibert).
I just love how Ankama deliberately shows us small scenes like this to remind us that Yugo can do adult things even though he looks like a kid. Because THIS is one of those scenes! Just look at how Alibert quietly pulls the cup of wine away from Yugo as soon as the guy starts ranting about his problems.
Tumblr media
That’s clearly not milk lol I just love your delusions @moths-are-better 💕💕
But not only did this scene made me realize that nothing can stop Yugo from doing adult things despite how he looks, it also helped me realize that Yugo is the type to only drink when he’s having problems. We clearly see him about to drink more while ranting to Alibert before he carefully pulls the wine away from Yugo cuz he KNOWS Yugo would drink more just for that.
Tumblr media
That level of attention to detail is amazing and I’m so glad I managed to catch up to the hints early on.
Alibert be looking like Yugo’s bartender AND therapist in just that moment alone lol
Ngl I would’ve loved to see a drunk Yugo if he had been able to drink more before Alibert intervened.
Tumblr media
‼️ EVERYONE ‼️
👏 BE👏 LIKE 👏 ALIBERT 👏 ❤️❤️
This is making me wanna have kids too man….
His caring and calming attitude towards Yugo and the way he just treats him, cares for him, and acts like a responsible parent during all these years really makes me wanna do the same thing someday. Alibert is so good at his job(s) that he’s even beating a freaking goddess. Let that sink in. (actually any good parent like Alibert would beat the Eliatrope goddess’ parenting easily lol)
Alibert is genuinely so sweet, patient, thoughtful, and understanding of Yugo. Like even though he just heard Yugo say he finally found his true family, Alibert doesn’t take his words as insults and would rather just let him spill out all of his words to him.
When I said I missed these two like this, I really meant it. This inn is not only where Yugo was raised in but it’s also Yugo’s comfort place.
Tumblr media
My ass knows this is foreshadowing.
It just knows.
Older Yugo where u at? We need to talk.
Ankama’s gonna ruin this family and laugh about it while eating some croissants.
There was something about the atmosphere that made everything feel tense. At least to your father it felt that way. He had patrons already waiting in the saloon for the afternoon, all talking in hushed whispers as they gossiped about something having to do with city hall. Your father frowned, opening the door to allow them all in for an afternoon drink.
“What's going on?” Your mother asked, watching as the men cheered about some things while others ordered drinks they normally wouldn’t.
“I don't know.” Your father shrugged. “A lot of people started coming in all happy and talking about something that happened.”
“A miracle is what it was.” Someone overheard your parents, inserting themselves into the conversation.
“It wasn't some miracle!” Someone else scoffed. “It was the work of the mayor! Always knew that Klein didn't do anything for selfish reasons.” He turned to your parents grin on his face as he thought about their precious mayor.
“You haven't heard? He returned all the money from the extra taxes he's been adding. At least to the less fortunate.” He explained.
Your mother’s eyebrows rose, quickly pulling together as she thought about the small pouch she had found in the back office. Looking over at your father, she pulled him along. “Excuse me.” She said to the customers.
“(F/N) where did we get all that extra cash from?” She quietly asked.
“I honestly don't know.” Your father shrugged. “It was just left in a bag in the mail.” He looked at the men who were talking. “Should I return it? We aren't in desperate need of it.”
“I think you should give it to the hospital. I'm sure they need it more.” Your mother spoke up after a moment.
Your father hummed a bit, thinking about how you were fairing. “Do you think (Y/N) needs it? Maybe we can give her money for her new home.” He told your mother.
“Maybe just a little.” Your mother smiled softly. She suddenly frowned as she thought about where she would have to take the money though. “She never told us where she lived.”
“Maybe (S/N) knows.” Your father told her, causing her to nod. They went back to their work positions, your mother quickly finding your sister doing some laundry out back while you little brother watched.
“Do you know where (Y/N) and Yeosang live?” Your mother asked her, causing her to look up with wide eyes. “We were going to give them some money for their home.”
Your sister didn’t really think your parents would approve of you living in tents in the middle of the woods. She kind of hoped you would have found something by then but knowing what it was the boys did she was sure you wouldn’t have a stable home for a while. At least not here in Cromer for the time being.
“They live in the wood-”
“Some wooden cabin a bit ways from here.” She cut off your brother, wiping her hands off on her skirts. Glancing at the small pouch in her mother’s hands, she gave the woman a smile. “I can take it to them.”
“It's alright!” Your mother waved her off. “We'll all go.”
“No, mom really.” She shook her head again. “I should do it!”
Before they got the chance to argue more, commotion in the distance stopped them. A crowd was forming at the church they would go to every Sunday. It was at the end of the street, with a long driveway that doubled as a lawn where gatherings were held.
“What's going on?” Your mother frowned, beginning to make her way over.
Your siblings followed along, eyes casting over the mob that was taking up the church’s driveway. There were confused people as well as angry. The orphans who were being taken care of by the nuns were all huddled behind them, trying to hide from the people yelling.
Some men had tried to reach the children, one succeeding in grabbing a hold of a little boy's arm.
“Stop!” Your mother screamed. “Leave them alone!” She rushed forward and quickly shoved the man away.
“Can't you see they're just children.” She screamed at him.
Your father had rushed forward, pulling your mother back to keep from having the aggressive man do something to her. Your eldest brother held back your siblings, trying to keep them from harm. It was clear where it was you got your heroic spirit from, your sense of justice coming out when there were people in need.
“Children to criminals!” The man sneered. “They took our money to keep for themselves! All of them!” He screamed.
A few of the people murmured to themselves over the speculation while less agreed with the man. Your father looked over the people who lived in the church, frowning his eyebrows as he took in the three nuns and 6 children. The father of the church made sure to huddle them all behind him, pulling the little boy who had gotten grabbed into his side.
“They are children!” The father scoffed. “How dare you think that of them!?”
“They were found with the money taken from the vault.” Someone shouted out. “These nuns are not as innocent as they claim.”
“God will strike you down for the lies you tell.” One of the nuns yelled back.
“And for your sins, sister?” They continued to argue.
“Do not speak to her that way!” Your father walked over to the church people, sticking an arm out to defend them.
“Where could they have possibly gotten all that money? It's an orphanage!”
Some of the town’s police had turned up, moving people away from the crowd to come up at the front. Our sister noticed the sheriff hiding amongst the people, watching the arguments go down with a harsh stare. She furrowed her eyebrows, before turning to look at her dad.
“And where did you get it? Cheating your way through gambling?” Your father sneered back, looking at the man with a harsh glare.
“They're probably hanging around the wrong kind of people. Probably have to do with those boys working at your hotel.” The man retorted, turning everyone’s attention onto your family.
They began to murmur again, this time the sheriff looking at your father with an upturned nose. Your sister swallowed her spit to relieve the dryness in her throat. She had a bad feeling about all of this and had no idea how to solve it. The only one she thought of was you.
“I hear they are friends with those officers from the capital. They're probably crooked cops.” The man continued.
“That is my son in law you're talking about.” Your father looked angry, walking up chest to chest with the man. “You better watch yourself.” He added.
“You defending them?” He asked your father. “Don't tell me you're involved.” He scoffed.
“I wouldn't open my mouth if I were you. I know things that can ruin you.” Your father threatened.
“Threatening me now?” He huffed. The man turned around to face the crowd, eyes catching sight of the sheriff. They gave each other nods of their heads, understanding where things were gonna go.
“We'll see how that ends for you, (L/N).” He told your father.
Your father gave the sheriff a look before calmly walking over to your siblings and mother. Your mother pulled him into a tight hug. As your sister watched the sheriff talk with the man who was arguing, she turned to look at her parents.
“Dad.” Your sister called out, her tone full of worry.
“Give all the money to (Y/N).” He whispered over your mom’s shoulder and towards your sister. “She'll know where to hide it.”
In very small towns you might notice that how important you are is based on how much land you own. It was a very old custom but it’s not Jason minded.
There was another problem after all.
He inherited the land after his father and it came along with the debt.
This farm was promised to him, and he loved it with all his heart. Jason worked day and night but the debt kept getting bigger and harder to pay off. He can go so long with scaring off every single person that wants to collect or buy his land. Jason knew who you were, he studied you and your business, maybe watching you from time to time. Taking a few pictures, sneaking into your home. He wanted to know his enemy, of course.
Jason was a stubborn man, he would never even admit out loud that someone like you made his cheeks flush and heart skip a bit. You wanted to take his home for heaven's sake! He sighed as he watched you from your window, you were getting ready for bed. Face going red as you began to take off. He didn’t stop watching, instead he loosened his pants.
Your job was simple, go in hand letters and talk to Jason Ackworth.
From what you know he was a very scary, stubborn man. You sigh as you listen to yet another employee of yours cry and explain themselves why they couldn’t even get close to his property. This happened every single time you tried to send someone to collect the debt, or do anything. You swear a few of your employees never came back, they must have ran away. Cowards
Time to take things into your own hands.
The ride to the farm was long, but when the buildings and city noise morphed into fields and calm sounds of nature you felt rested.
The land was pretty big, if not for the debt Jason would be a lucky guy if not for the dept. Your family dealt with Ackworth for years, but you were pretty sure you will finish this.
When your great grandpa started his business he lent money to people so they would be able to stabilize themselves and eventually pay it back. Ackworths did everything not to do that, so that’s why you are here.
You finally see the white house and the farm. It looked simple, but boy wasn’t it a jewel.
It looked well taken care of, which meant it could be sold for a lot. You smile as your eyes wander through the farm.
Everything seemed to be in good condition, your eye caught an older man tending to the chickens.
It looks like you didn’t need to look far for Mister Jason, smiling proudly as you walked towards him. He must have noticed you too because he stopped what he was doing and watched you. When you got closer to him you noticed he is not as old as you thought he was. Jason was actually a good looking young man.
“Mister Ackworth!” you yelled cheerfully, you think he shook when you yelled. “What do you want?” his voice horse, somewhat angry sounding.
“Can we talk?”
“I still have a few years to pay off the debt.” Jason started, his face turned into a disgusted look. He was difficult, but you could work with that so you kept your polite smile. No need to anger the man more, yes? You sipped the coffee Jason made for you, the sweet bitter taste filling your mouth. It had an off taste but it’s probably because it’s organic or something.
“Mister Ackworth, listen, I know your situation is hard but this is getting ridiculous. My men disappear when coming into contact with you and the debt is overdue!” Your vision got blurry, something was wrong. Oh very very wrong. “Are you feelin’ alright?” “Yeah yeah just just-” you slurred, then your vision went black You groaned as you tried to move your hands to rub your face, only to hear a loud noise and realize you have been tied up. Jason chuckled as he crouched in front of you. He had such a happy smile, you thought he wasn’t really capable of that. His face was still a little blurry, and speech a bit slurred.
“Why?”
“I hate you, oh how I hate you with my whole heart. I spend days, weeks, months or maybe even years watching you.” His rough hand grabbed your face, with a very painful grip he forced your glossy eyes to look at him.
“I hate how you make me feel, God, how crazy you make me.”  he laughed.
“We are going to have so much fun.” he drew in closer and kissed you.
CAN THEY DRIVE??
a/n this is my first time posting to this account... Exciting... Please feel free to lmk any of ur thoughts I feel like I kinda exaggerated certain characters teehee
Contains the brothers + dateables. Occasional mentions of gn mc. Truly about their driving skill
LUCIFER
-yes, has his driver's license
-puts on the appearance of someone who is good at driving and well-adjusted
-when he's alone or when things ramp up even a little, however, his road rage is actually insane
-will literally lay on the horn at anyone who slights him, even a little
-when he's not alone and feels the need to protect his pride, will still be an angry driver but in a far more subtle way
-turns on his high beams, rides people's bumpers, cuts people off and break-checks them any time he can't quite make a big scene
-even when he isn't driving, he's an insane backseat driver, but to different degrees depending on who's driving
-occasionally backseat drives for Beel, Asmo or Satan but definitely plays it up just to mess with Mammon in particular
-will backseat drive for mc out of concern rather than jest
-still annoying
-good at driving on the surface but his anger makes him far more prone to accidents than most, third best driver out of the brothers
MAMMON
-Yes, has his license - otherwise the car in his room would be redundant
-surprisingly good at driving, understands and obeys traffic laws, overly cautious at times
-not out of genuine respect for those laws, just out of care for his car
-wouldn't bother being subtle if another driver pulls a maneuver that has the potential to mess up his paint job, will scream out the window or lay on the horn
-immediately stops and speeds off if the other driver tries to reciprocate
-will be SO annoying if anyone tries to eat or drink in his car
-even water he'll demand is thrown out before entry
-his brothers hate it. Isn't as harsh about it towards mc, but will quickly revoke their special privileges if they end up actually spilling something
-constant cycle of those cologne-y tree air fresheners hanging from his rear view mirror
-has a million more unopened ones in the glove box
-car is clean at a glance, but trash is just barely hidden out of sight under car seats and in cup holders
-honestly pretty reliable driver, second best out of all his brothers
LEVIATHAN
-no, doesn't have a driver's license or a car
-says it's because he wouldn't even have anywhere to go, is partially correct in that assertion
-Mammon and Asmo tried to teach him to drive a while ago, he wanted to drive to a convention that was farther away
-couldn't so much as put the car in drive without panicking that he was imminently at threat of hitting something
-any time his foot even grazed the gas, he'd slam the breaks to the floor
-didn't take long to start crying about it
-Mammon stopped the short-lived lessons there, didn't want Levi's tears to ruin the interior of his car
-any time Levi needs a ride now, he'll either walk (very short distances), use public transportation (only if he can secure an isolated seat away from everyone else), or ask one of his brothers for a ride
-prefers when Barbatos drives him places the most and Mammon the least, although probably ends up being driven by Asmo the most
-if he did have a car, it would undoubtedly be painful
-COVERED in anime decals, maybe a custom wrap of Ruri-chan
-would probably be decent at driving if he got over his initial fears, but that's not going to happen
SATAN
-yes, he has his driver's license - it's just frequently suspended
-unlike Lucifer, will not wait until he's alone to exhibit severe road rage
-even worse than Lucifer, isn't above getting out of the car and slamming his fists against the driver's side window of whoever he's mad at
-backseat of his car is piled high with books he doesn't have room for at the HoL
-”sorry, you can just throw those in the back” -Satan, any time mc is trying to get into the front seat of his car
-seats and interior are probably also coated in cat hair, he can't stand to get rid of it
-so anyways back to his horrible road rage
-his repeated verbal (and physical) assaults on other drivers means his license is repeatedly (often) suspended
-when he needs transportation during these times he usually defaults to Beel
-on the few occasions he needs to resort to riding with Lucifer, he intentionally does shit to get him into trouble - diverting his eyes from the road and ruining his focus, reaching over and wiggling the wheel from Lucifer's hands, etc
-doesn't seem to truly question why his license, after being repeatedly suspended, has yet to be permanently revoked from him
-nor why it keeps getting reinstated faster than promised
-hint: it's Lucifer
-not a very good driver at all - being on the road has a way of bringing out anger even in people who are not normally prone to it, and sadly, Satan is nothing if not prone to anger
-when he isn't angry, he's exceptional at following traffic laws and probably has obscure details about them memorized
-jumps out of his car, even on the busiest intersections, whenever he sees a cat on the side of the road
-takes it home every time without fail
-this is actually a more pressing reason to keep him off the road compared to the traffic violations in the mind of Lucifer
-fifth best driver out of the brothers
ASMODEUS
-yes, has his driver's license
-his car is fucking insane
-fluffy pink steering wheel cover and dashboard cover AND seat covers, maybe a little leopard print thrown in, but only a little he's not an animal
-car is more heavily perfumed than Mammon’s, his air freshener hanging right next to the fluffy dice off of his rear view mirror
-backseat windows are tinted and one-directional, for Reasons
-will not drive unless music is blasting at full volume
-you can feel the vibrations from Britney Spears’s (or devildom equivalent) dulcet tones in your seat
-constantly on his phone while driving, taking photos and videos of himself, occasionally livestreaming
-projects the image of someone who does not care about traffic laws
-secretly a very good driver, never gets into accidents
-significantly more forgiving of other cars and much less prone to road rage than his brothers
-the best driver out of all of them
BEELZEBUB
-yes, has his license
-probably the most unremarkable driver out of all of them
-only got his license to take Belphie places, since he was the only one out of the two who could actually stay awake behind the wheel
-his shortcomings do not lie in his sin like Satan or Lucifer, but instead just from being a beefbrain
-not very perceptive, especially when he's driving to a restaurant or something - easily distracted by other goals and forgets the most important goal of driving
-don't hit things
-doesn't ever end up in a major accident, but may need to slam on the breaks from time to time
-apologizes accordingly for these instances
-car is overall not notable, depending on when you enter
-Lucifer makes him clean it weekly, otherwise fast food wrappers accumulate to the point of blocking the windshield
-keeps a pillow and blanket in the car for Belphie to nap with
-not a terrible driver, but not excellent either - fourth best out of the brothers
BELPHEGOR
-no driver's license
-literally no way he's going to stay awake behind the wheel
-tried to learn how to drive first so he could drive Beel places, but fell asleep while driving enough times and ran into enough things that they will not let him anymore
-felt apologetic about it at first, but got used to being driven by Beel everywhere quickly
-the movement of the car lulls him right to sleep anyways
-even if it isn't Beel driving he will fall asleep
-would prefer to sprawl out over the back seats but can fold himself up in the front seat if need be
-if he was capable of staying awake, would probably be a decent driver, if not very passive-aggressive
-would chronically drive under the speed limit like he's elderly
DIAVOLO
-Yes, has a driver's license - Barbatos insisted he got one, yet he hardly ever uses it
-almost always escorted places by designated chauffeurs or, less commonly, Barbatos himself
-thought getting his license would be his ticket to freedom, his teenage girl escape
-was so upset when he found out he wasn't even allowed to go to the DMV, everything was filed from the castle
-felt deprived of yet another commoner experience, still doesn't know why everyone hates the DMV so bad
-(stands for “devildom motor vehicles”)
-driving was fun for him at first, but since he doesn't really get the chance to drive normally it stopped being fun after a while
-even when he does get to drive, Barbatos’s backseat driving is insane
-double whammy if Lucifer is in the car too
-actually a pretty good driver, made sure to be responsible and study laws and techniques in advance
-doesn't even understand the concept of road rage, probably laughs it off every time someone pulls a dangerous maneuver in his proximity
-better driver than Lucifer, yet not on par with Asmo
BARBADOS
-yes, of COURSE he has a driver's license
-he's the one virtually everyone defaults to when they need a ride, anyways
-primarily transports Diavolo, but frequently helps the brothers get around too
-literally the safest possible driver you could ever dream of
-always doing the exact speed limit. Predicts unsafe drivers in his vicinity before they're even in his line of sight. Never slams the breaks or swerves for any reason
-got distracted once while parking, lightly scraped a curb
-the most horrified he's ever been
-dedicated the next few years to improving his driving skill, even though it was already exceptional
-dedicated driving gloves for every time he gets in the car
-very anal retentive about cleanliness in the car, especially
-hates having to crawl in there to clean shit up
-will obviously end up doing it eventually anyways. Sigh
-easily the best driver out of every other character, if not in the entire devildom
SIMEON
-no, he doesn't have a driver's license
-so fucking scared of cars
-he can hardly use a phone properly, still manages to cause problems with that, although understands how it could be worse
-a car is where it gets worse
-if he misclicks something on his phone, he may end up embarrassing himself a little, worst case scenario is a virus or needing to buy a new phone
-operating a car incorrectly could result in injury or death
-nobody bothers teaching him regardless, although he did greatly consider learning for a while, to help Luke get around easier
-just defaults to Barbatos instead
-it's probably a good thing he doesn't drive - without that fear of technology, especially of technology with high capacity to be harmful, he would probably be one of the worst drivers overall
SOLOMON
-yes, has a driver's license. Regrettably
-hardly uses it, only has a human world license, never bothered getting licensed in the devildom
-just teleports everywhere. Wiggles his fingers and does magic and goes where he wants instantly
-he literally predates the invention of cars so massively anyways so that's definitely what he did before cars too
-got a license because he thought it would be fun
-also the human world started actually cracking down on ID, he couldn't get away with the trust-based system that humanity used to operate off of
-human world officials are confused when he presents them with a driver's license twenty whole years out of date, however
-especially when his face is the exact same as the photo on his crazy old, visibly weathered license - as if he mysteriously hadn't aged…
-probably ends up in some kind of “man from Taured” style myth eventually
-might be the man from Taured actually
-fucking sucks at driving also
