probably my favorite esoteric piece of Thief media is this "Interview with Garrett" some game magazine did (with garrett's responses actually written by the game's writer), and the interviewer asks why garrett's shoes make so much noise cloppin around when he's trying to be stealthy and garrett's like "these fine leather boots are the most exquisite ive ever seen.... i stole them from a noble and couldn't let them go...... i never take them off....."

the idea of garrett, who despises anything ostentatious and wears clothes so filthy his smell gives him away before his sound does, stealing a pair of shoes so beautiful he refuses to wear anything else ever again, even though they're tapdancing shoes and he sneaks around for a living, still slays me

Frederik (Frits) de Voogt

(Haarlem, 21 augustus 1927 – aldaar, 20 december 2023)

The former Feadship director, naval architect and yacht designer had a decades-long career that followed in the footsteps of his father, Henri de Voogt, who died in 1958 and left the studio in the hands of his son.

Mr de Voogt was the grand master of De Voogt Naval Architects for decades. Together with his team, he shaped the dreams of demanding Feadship customers.

The designs were unique and are still the basis of today's Feadship yachts. Even after his retirement, he remained involved and interested in yacht building, always astute and always modest.

Frits de Voogt retired in 1995 and went on to win a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Showboat Design Awards in 2016.

If Percival and Nadine was to have a contemporary ya romance name (the typical of non-fantasy, non-myth retelling, non-spec novels, I mean), it would have to be something involving a metaphor of light.

That dark neo-noir radio drama starring David Morrissey (it IS really dark. The lengths I'll go to just hear the interpretative power of his voice. Anyways), called Don't Hold Back the Light keeps coming to mind again and again. The imagery of dawn and sunrise keeps coming to me, in part through the songs I feel fit the story in partial ways (Keane's Bend and Break, Rick Astley's Rise Up, James Blunt's Bonfire Heart, even the melody of Lionel Ritchie's Stuck on You), but also because it feels thematically pertinent.

Both find themselves in night, not only in the despair, and tiredness, and hurt and brokenness, but on the idea that they had their day in the Sun, as life is metaphorically a day, and that it is over, and yet they linger. BUT where they are at the beginning, the idea of a new day sounds scary. And exhausting. There's a sliver of hope deep, deep down, like a candle on a window in a faraway house in the middle of nowhere. But for the most part, they'd like to hold it back if they could. And yet that feels wrong to them.

#look I'm not saying the idea or the imagery aren't like... extremely common #but they feel fitting #have been thinking about this within the frame of It's a Beautiful Life #Nadine is a bit like Mary in the way that she had a dream and a goal and she was laser focused on achieving it #but in her case it all went wrong really fast so what now?#Unlike George Percival has no sense that he has done more damage than good #he was a good son! he made his parents happy! but they are dead #he was a good brother! but his sister is married well cared for and far away #as the heir of Avensley? well does that mean anything at this point? it was already a dying relic by the time his father inherited it #he thinks himself too broken in mind and body to be a good husband and father in the future #sure there's a death of his own professional dreams #but they aren't renunciations from his pov #the alternate good was such a clear direct personal duty that it isn't like there was an alternative for him #not to count the things prevented by things completely outside his control like war #he's passively suicidal because he thinks of himself as just having outlived his usefulness #so anyways it is all about new beginnings and therefore naturally about dawn and light #incidentally I have been obsessed ever since I watched The Lake House with the idea of Architecture being tied to light #and the concept of a LI that is an architect which is such an unexplored concept?#and I feel it is very interesting in terms of how precision and the mastery over force are crucial to i #but also the idea of the builder of home and shelter #unfortunately it has made me realize the unintended implication that James as an aviator destroys shelter #and Percival as an architect builds them #which cannot be helped at this point but is definitely not a sort of love triangle thing #James was essentially a good man in his time and place and not a bad husband for how long their marriage lasted

#redesigning my white whale (florida apartment complex that doesn't suck bad)#the more interesting of the original studies i used for my research paper is on AC costs worldwide & how to reduce them #and while a lot of it is from commercial enterprise and is difficult to address there is actually a pretty significant #reduction in energy that could be achieved by reducing use of residential air conditioning #but ofc in tropical climates AC is literally life saving #so this study examines methods of architecture from tropical climates and how #the structure of the home allows for air flow in a way to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce need for ac #courtyards flow of air across the house through windows use of lightweight materials that don't soak up heat even #stuff like walls made of a lattice allowing air flow #but ofc you make other sacrifices for this #like bugs are a problem #and some of these methods make you vulnerable to flooding #but generally its a lot better than most current architecture in the tropical parts of the US #which largely use either very bastardized spanish architecture or just new england #and don't accommodate for the climate as much as they should #the spanish architecture has become mostly aesthetic and not functional for climate control #i would also be very interested in a study on Florida Seminole architecture #though to my understanding the seminole were pretty nomadic and mostly lived in tent structures #ive seen some cool stuff abt managing flooding at different seminole like educational events #and in later eras of seminole history a lot of seminoles took up farming and built more permanent settlements #but I can't really find a lot of stuff on it? other than firsthand talking to people #which is useful but they usually can't like #show me blueprints yk #...anyway tldr im designing a courtyard with a big tree in the middle #crossflow of air through windows wld be cool but its hard in apartments so idk #and then irrigation is improved a lot from my original plan #bc instead of the excess at the end just going back to the city water recycling system #it can flow down from the rooftop garden and water the Big Tree :)#yippee

9 Out-of-This-World Moments for Space Communications & Navigation in 2023

How do astronauts and spacecraft communicate with Earth?

By using relay satellites and giant antennas around the globe! These tools are crucial to NASA’s space communications networks: the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network, which bring back science and exploration data every day.

It’s been a great year for our space communications and navigation community, who work to maintain the networks and enhance NASA’s capabilities. Keep scrolling to learn more about our top nine moments.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon spacecraft lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, on the company's 29th commercial resupply services mission for the agency to the International Space Station. Liftoff was at 8:28 p.m. EST.

1. In November, we launched a laser communications payload, known as ILLUMA-T, to the International Space Station. Now, ILLUMA-T and the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) are exchanging data and officially complete NASA’s first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system. Laser communications can send more data at once than traditional radio wave systems – think upgrading from dial-up to fiber optic internet. ILLUMA-T and LCRD are chatting at 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). At that rate, you could download an average movie in under a minute.

NASA’s InSight lander captured this selfie on Mars on April 24, 2022, the 1,211th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.

2. Data analyzed in 2023 from NASA’s retired InSight Mars lander provided new details about how fast the Red Planet rotates and how much it wobbles. Scientists leveraged InSight’s advanced radio technology, upgrades to the Deep Space Network, and radio signals to determine that Mars’ spin rate is increasing, while making the most precise measurements ever of Mars’ rotation.

TBIRD is demonstrating a direct-to-Earth laser communications link from low Earth orbit to a ground station on Earth.

3. We set a new high record! The TeraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) payload – also demonstrating laser communications like ILLUMA-T and LCRD – downlinked 4.8 terabytes of data at 200 Gbps in a single 5-minute pass. This is the highest data rate ever achieved by laser communications technology. To put it in perspective a single terabyte is the equivalent of about 500 hours of high-definition video.

4. This year we celebrated the Deep Space Network’s 60th anniversary. This international array of antennas located at three complexes in California, Spain, and Australia allow us to communicate with spacecraft at the Moon and beyond. 5. We are bringing humans to the Moon with Artemis missions. During expeditions, astronauts exploring the surface are going to need internet-like capabilities to talk to mission control, understand their routes, and ensure overall safety. The space comm and nav group is working with international partners and commercial companies to develop LunaNet, and in 2023, the team released Draft LunaNet Specification Version 5, furthering development.

The High-Rate Delay Tolerant Networking node launched to the International Space Station in November and will act as a high-speed path for data.

6. In addition to laser communications, ILLUMA-T on the International Space Station is also demonstrating high-rate delay/disruption tolerant networking (HDTN). The networking node is showcasing a high-speed data path and a store-and-forward technique. HDTN ensures data reaches its final destination and isn’t lost on its path due to a disruption or delay, which are frequent in the space environment.

The Communications Services Project (CSP) partners with commercial industry to provide networking options for future spaceflight missions.

7. The space comm and nav team is embracing the growing aerospace industry by partnering with commercial companies to provide multiple networking options for science and exploration missions. Throughout 2023, our commercialization groups engaged with over 110 companies through events, one-on-one meetings, forums, conferences, and more. Over the next decade, NASA plans to transition near-Earth services from government assets to commercial infrastructure.

Middle and high school students solve a coding experiment during NASA's Office of STEM Engagement App Development Challenge.

8. Every year, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement sponsors the App Development Challenge, wherein middle and high school students must solve a coding challenge. This year, student groups coded an application to visualize the Moon’s South Pole region and display information for navigating the Moon’s surface. Our space communications and navigation experts judged and interviewed students about their projects and the top teams visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston!

Aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov.

9. The Near Space Network supported 19 launches in 2023! Launches included Commercial Crew flights to the International Space Station, science mission launches like XRISM and the SuperBIT balloon, and many more. Once in orbit, these satellites use Near Space Network antennas and relays to send their critical data to Earth. In 2023, the Near Space Network provided over 10 million minutes of communications support to missions in space.
