"The Weaver"

It's Orb Weaver season here...and an absolute queen is living in my backyard:

I was watching her web for awhile, and almost collected the web, because it seemed empty. Our seasonal orb weavers typically hang out in the middle of their webs. This one was empty, with a big gap in the pattern. I thought maybe the weaver had gotten picked off by a bird. But nope.

I was wrong. This lady showed herself when a bug got caught in her web, and she zipped down from her hideout. I watched her carefully wrap up her prize. Legs like perfect spindles, skillfully wasting no time to preserve her precious gift.

I wasn't 100% sure her web was unoccupied when I first discovered it. There was the large ap in the patterned, and I couldn't find the resident weaver anywhere among the leaves. After a day or so, the gap had been repaired, but still no weaver sighting. It took about a weak of just leaving the web be, until she came down from her leaf and wrapped up her bug. I know she's a female, because of her bulbous abdomen and sheer size. Her body is about an inch or so, plus another inch worth of legs. This is her leaf hideout.

She's curled up in the leaves, pretending to be a leaf herself, using her cryptsis; her being perfectly camofluged against the autumn coloring of the leaves. If you look to the right of the big light brown leaft in the photo, you can see her legs poking out, touching the edges of her web.

Her spider family is Araneidea, the orb weavers, her species is called Cross spider or Garden spider. This weaver will maintain her web, possibly produce an egg sack, and diligently care for her young until her death. Her childern will repeat this cycle next season, if they reach her size. Glad I didn't disturb her web, and honored this queen chose my backyard as a suitable realm.
