The notion of separate souls inhabiting various parts of the body appears in cultures from the Arctic to the South China Sea. According to an early twentieth-century report on Inuit soul beliefs, the souls located in the larynx and on the left side of a person are tiny people the size of a sparrow; other souls the size of a finger joint reside in all the limbs of a person (Jakobsen, 1999, p. 80).
Among the Rungus people of Borneo, the joints of the body each have their own soul whose activity in the spirit world results in the various aches and pains of the joints. Children’s souls especially are thought to run about in the dream world, falling out of trees, scraping their knees, having foot-races, and being chased by spirit dogs, the result of which, not surprisingly, is that the person wakes up entirely sore and worn out from such spirit-world adventures (Appell and Appell, 1993, p. 17).

hello cris! i would love to ask as someone who is currently learning a language (i'm currently trying to learn italian again for the nth time) what are your favorite techniques when it comes to learning a language? i've been trying to study italian for two years now but i always end up giving up immediately 😭🫶🏻
Hello anon!
Firstly I had a vague memory of talking about this before and I checked my masterlist so in case you want to read more here is another similar ask I answered to a while back and here an ask in which I meanioned a few italian fiction books for people who are learning. I'll be honest I did not reread those and I don't remember what I wrote lmao. But you have some more reading to do after this just in case!
At the moment the main language I am very slowly trying to learn is Irish. But I will be honest it's more a free time hobby than actual studying. In the sense that I don't have a schedule for it and I have ups and downs in which I am able to focus a bit more, and times like the past few months in which my energy is nowhere to be found so I do very little progress. The main way I am dping this is with duolingo, which I feel is a great way to start and to keep a tiny bit of practice in your everyday life which is fundamental. Of course if you want to have more progress I would suggest coming up with a more structured study plan and schedule, but I'll talk about it in a bit. The other thing I am implementing is a grammar book that of course is what requires more mental energy. My technique with that is, as everything I study, to read it, underline important things and write my own set of notes. That is because I know it is my main way of learning in general.
And with this we come to a important point, before getting into learning anything try to figure out what are the ways you learn things best. Everyone's brain works differently, I personally have awful memory and my brain works way better using logic (which is why the way duolingo is structured works wonders for me, because it forces me to learn grammar rules with logic and it repeats vocabulary so much that even I end up memorizing it). Writing notes down, even several times, is my go to way of learning in general so of course I focus a lot on that. Clearly with learning a language you also need to implement a lot of practice, which is way I recommend trying out a well made plan. This doesn't mean create insane goals that will make you feel overwhelmed. Instead create a low effort plan in which you regularly do a bit of everything:
Learn vocab and practice it
Learn new grammar rule and practice them
Work on booktext esercises
Active learning with a book
Active learning with a video
These are just some ideas. When I self studied english what really made me learn the language was active learning by immersing myself with the language. That forces you to learn. Watch youtube videos in italian (I am pretty sure there's some people who make specific videos for language learnera in which they speak slowly and focus on certain vocab, so I highly recommend those, but when you feel more comfortable with the language go for pure entertainment, that will have you learn actual spoken Italian which is of course different from textbooks). Approach the language with written texts with either children's books or those novels simplified for language learning (those are great because you often get exercises to practice how much you understood of the story).
I know I have probably mentioned it before, but the first way I got into self studying English when I was younger was by writing down lyrics to my favourite album. I think I have it lying around still, a notebook filled with the lyrics to all the songs from Imaginaerum by Nightwish next to the translations. Listening to music in your target language is such a good trick imo. Take my brother, the guy does not speak one word on English but he knows by heart all the lyrics to Iron Maiden songs all.of.them. he never really had to practice English but if he had to I would suggest he started there. The more you get your target language into your daily life the better it is, and I don't mean just learning from books. Force yourself to describe the room you are in in your target language, write about your days in a diary and do that in your target language. When you are waiting in line list all the words that come up to you in your target language. It's hard at first, of course it is, but with time it gets easier and easier. The final goal is to be able to think in your target language, even if the grammar isn't perfect and it takes a long time to remember the correct words.
Think of yourself as a young child. They are learning languages like you, starting from zero, so focus on things that are for them, books and movies. You cannot expect to learn a language like a native speaker of your age right away, they have years of experience speaking it. If you instead think of yourself as a kid you will approach things that are at your current level, and after you can move on from there.
I think the goal is to make a plan and to fit even the tiniest bit of language learning into your everyday life. The progress might be slow but you are training your brain anyway. When you see something isn't working change it up, give yourself reachable goals, and keep it fun.
I hope this was somewhat helpful! If you have any other questioms my inbox is always open. Buona fortuna!

While everyone else in my feed is working in their art journals, I’m playing with my recycled home decor projects. ❤️ This is an old hamper from the 50’s Brian picked up at an auction for me for $1. He knows I love yellow and flowers. 💛 The top had yellow vinyl which was ripped so I scrapped as much off as I could but there was still lumpy bumps. ❤️ I decided to glue down book text. 💛 Since my house colors are black, white, red and yellow I decided to make the top black. ❤️ Then I scribbled on it with charcoal, then sealed it with modpodge. 💛 Last thing I did to the top was wax it with black shoe polish. ❤️ The color of the flowers wasn’t sitting well with me so I went over them with red. 💛 Now I’m happy with it. ❤️ Moral of the story is, anything can be given a new life with a little imagination and some book text! 💛 #homedecor #recycledhamper #upcycled #ineverthrowanythingaway #booktext #collage #recycledparts4art #jeribellini #learnatthelittlehouse https://www.instagram.com/p/B-F1WqUgkN2/?igshid=uwyjhz8itud7

CHARACTER CONSTRUCTION IN WRITING
This does not mean that all the characters should be nice or nice or admirable, Don Corleone in "The Godfather" and Sidney Falco in "The Sweet Smell of Success" are neither admirable nor pleasant but antiheroes; however, you can tell an exciting story about them. A despicable character, but with a slight chance of salvation, can be as easily a protagonist as a fun and admirable character. In the same way, a sympathetic character must have its undesirable side if you want to create tension in the audience about whether he or she will be able to do what they have to do to reach their goal.
It should be noted that our interest in whether the protagonist reaches his goal is proportional to the interest of that character to reach his goal. The more intense is her or his desire, the greater our concern. We do not ask if what the protagonist seeks is moral or immoral, just or unjust, generous or selfish; we ask how strongly the protagonist wants that something and that determines our emotional attitude towards him. A protagonist who does not know what he wants, or knows but does not care much whether he gets it or not, represents a poor dramatic material.

💗💗💗💗 I don't know about anyone else, but I get a feeling of euphoria every time I see fiction-novel text. Just seeing the way each line is laid out in a particular order, I go "Ahhhhhh 🤤🤤🤤🤤" It's like seeing melted chocolate! Gimme the book to read now!! What's strange is I rarely get that same feeling from the same text in any other format: when it's in a physical book, it's like the text has a soul and the pages are like open eyes. 👁️ #reading #writerslife #booktext #harrypotterandthedeathlyhallows #reader #uniqueperspective #inlovewithbooks #euphoria #love #drool #books #read #wordsonapage #pages #eyes #soul https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt8ZvO-nhVm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=d319c126p5vv

One of the things I love most about making art/art journaling is the impermanence of it. Sure, glue dries. Paint, for the most part, once you put it down on paper it’s a part of your journals life foooorrreeevvveeerrr. BUT you can always cover it up or even tear it out if you really hate it. This is a great example of that. Scroll through to see the before. Using one of @robenmarie botanical art papers I saved this eyesore from making me cringe every time I look through this journal. I could have just glued those printouts down and called it a day because they’re so beautiful. 😍 But I did end up adding an old picture (a photocopy of a tintype) and some ephemera. Much improved from the before I’d say. #doover #impermanence #artjournal #artjournaling #bookbinding #handmade #handbound #robenmariesmith #ephemera #tintype #photo #oldphoto #foundwords #booktext #collage #collageephemera https://www.instagram.com/p/B2xSor1gWjn/?igshid=1e7zjifwdbdf9

Vintage Dictionary from 1807, first dictionary, by Noah Webster himself!⠀ My husband and I have been purchasing HUGE lots of old books for our Etsy shop, Recycled Parts 4 Art. (linksinbio) We've been selling the books for Junk Journals, Altering, Covers, Text pages, book Spines, the beautiful rattie-ness inside.... etc. I digress..... ⠀ ⠀ We recently bought a lot from someone that WAS going to open a used book shop and changed his mind. We wondered what might be in the lot as we basically peeked into a bunch of boxes and decided without seeing every one of them. There were 2000 books in this lot. OK, so yes, we have gone a little book crazy! 😂🥰🤓⠀ ⠀ Brian looked this book up and found out that it's selling for anywhere between $700 and $2500, depending on the shape it's in... I'm in shock! ⠀ ⠀ Thought I'd share pictures of it with you! He sells on Amazon BTW. Something like this, I don't think I'd put in my Etsy shop, but who knows! ⠀ ⠀ #usedbooks #vintagebooks #webstersdictionary #bookfinds #bookscore #books #alteredbooks #junkjournals #artjournals #booktext #ephemera #vintagepaper #booktext #bookspines #bookcovers #bookpages #bookmaker #bookmaking #booklover #jeribellini #recycledparts4art #linksinbio https://www.instagram.com/p/BuMeRAoj5cm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7odgy5q8ywai

Christmas magic (late, but yeah ...)
Don’t you just love the part in the first Harry Potter book, when Ronny and Harry are by theirselves on Christmas in the Griffindor room and enjoying food, candy and presents? I find it very cozy, best Christmas-scene I have read in books ^^ Even Harry got presents, even though he believed that he wouldn’t. This brings up so much hope for humanity just to think about that ^^
