one of my very favourite scenes in the show is jon and georgie's conversation and smoke break in mag 199. it's not scene i see talked about very much - in fact i don't see jon and georgie's relationship getting very much attention at all - but it is so so good

i think the interesting thing about georgie is that she is so eager to stay uninvolved. whilst she loves and cares for jon, she has no interest in going with him. instead she gives him advice and support from the sidelines, and she keeps on doing so, no matter how many times he ignores it. she very rarely pressures him into any decision. she'll make her opinion of his choices very clear, but she emphasises that at the end of the day they are his choices to make

she, once again, does that here. she doesn't berate him, because she knows he's getting enough of that from himself and the others, so she just encourages him to find a way to move forward. and even after everything he's done, even after their fallout, she still expresses happiness for him

in a way, she's an anchor to the outer world. a reminder that there is something else out there. despite how much martin loves jon, he cannot provide that more objective outsider perspective for him. there is a mutual understanding between jon and georgie, a promise to always be there for each other even when they think the other has done something tremendously stupid, but also to tell them that they've done something stupid and help them move forward, and that is actually a dynamic jon really needs

You know what's funny to me? Normies are trying to defend this whole "MCU is Earth-616" by claiming that the movies and comic books are a "separate multiverses" and "its their label", but what they don't know is that the MCU/Earth-199,999 is in fact part of the multiverse! it was confirmed in Young Avengers Vol. 2 #8.

MCU fans AND Marvel themselves spent so long telling us the MCU is NOT 616 just to shut up comic fans when we point out inaccuracies and they can't take it back now just because they feel like it.

I personally think because Marvel wants to include incursions in their next decade of movies they are trying to get people to believe that the MCU is the original universe or that the comics have less importance than the mcu which is hilarious.

miguel o’hara x reader (crack) - "where’s my super suit?”

this is very self-explanatory slight nsfw mention?? nothing smutty lmao

Brooding in his impossibly dark office, Miguel gazes at the various orange telegram screens around him. One of them catches his eye; Miles, Gwen, Pavitr, and Hobie all being absolutely demolished by an anomaly. 

Each one of them is being thrown in the opposite direction, thwacking against each other or accidentally webbing the wrong person. 

Miguel’s supposed to be off duty right now, though it’s hard to believe that Miguel gets any free time at all. Giving into Lyla’s pestering, he wears normal clothes today, opting for a simple zip-up sports jacket and pants. 

But, Miguel knew he’d regret it. 

He gazes at the live footage of the kids being completely totaled by the anomaly. Something similar to sympathy growing in his chest. (He doesn’t like to admit he has a soft spot for the kids, but he does.)

Miguel closes his eyes, hunching down and pinching between his eyes. “No puedo más-” He mumbles to himself. Pressing a button on the screen, Miguel quickly finds which universe the kids are in, opting to jump in and deal with it himself. 

He’s already got his watch on, ready to step into action when he realizes...

He doesn’t have his suit on. 

“Fuck.“ He mutters, breaking into a run out of his office, and down the equally dim hallway towards his living quarters. If you’re so invested in your job, why not live there as well?

The automatic doors slide open, revealing a lifeless, bland bedroom. You bug him to make it more homey, but he hasn’t got the chance to yet. Miguel quickly rummages through his drawers in the dark, filing through another closet in search of his suit, or at least one of a duplicate. Nothing. 

“Lyla!“

Miguel starts rummaging through more clothes, and she instantly flickers by his shoulder. 

“What?“

“Do you know where my suit is?“ Miguel asks. 

“I dunno.“ Lyla shrugs. “I think y/n has it. Said she wanted to keep it to make sure you wouldn’t go work today.“

Miguel sighs in annoyance, swatting Lyla away like a fly until she blinks off. He taps a few buttons on his smartwatch, hastily pressing the call button for your favorited contact.

You answer as per usual. Miguel’s surprised you weren’t busy. 

“Honey?“ Miguel asks, double checking the clothes he threw on the floor.

“Whaat?” 

“Where’s my suit?” 

“What? Sorry, you spazzed out a little.“

Miguel sighs, taking a deep breath on behalf of healthy marriages. 

“Where. Is. My. Spider. Suit?“ He asks, slower this time. 

“I uh- put it away.“ 

“Where?“ He asks, his voice hushed. 

You raise your eyebrow. Miguel is supposed to be off duty?

“Why do you need to know?“

“I need it!“

“Nuh uh! Don’t you dare think about zipping off to whatever fucking Earth-199 you’ve got going on! You haven’t had a break in literally 4 years!“

“The kids are in danger!“

“Your mental health is in danger!“

“Tell me where my goddamn suit is! We’re talking about the future generation!“

“The only future generation you should be worrying about are the kids you put in me last ni-“

“Oh my fucking god, just tell me! Hon-“

You hang up on him, and Miguel sighs for the 10th time today, hanging his head low in frustration. He’s surrounded by clothes he never wears, the room utterly cluttered. 

You know what, maybe someone else will deal with it? There’s thousands of spider-people in the building, it’s safe to say that they could take down at least one anomaly. 

For now, Miguel needs a break.

“We’ll continue to acclimate to the heat! People in the desert already do!” No we fucking don’t

Maricopa County, the county that Phoenix, AZ resides in, has seen 425 confirmed heat deaths already this year, which matches the 2022 total, and they’re expecting the number to grow with 199 more under investigation, and the heat continuing into November.

It’s the 3rd week of October and we’ve been in the 100s still. Our average high is typically in the high 80s.

“In 2023, 226 heat caused deaths have been recorded, and 199 heat-related deaths have been recorded. 199 deaths are still under investigation. Of those who died this year, 29% were 50-64 years-old and 44% of those deaths were people experiencing homelessness. From 2006 to 2015, 777 heat deaths were recorded. From 2016 to 2022, 1,801 heat-associated deaths were recorded – more than double the number of heat deaths recorded in a six year period than the nine years beforehand.”

At this same time last year, 359 heat-associated deaths were confirmed and 91 still under investigation.

Phoenix also hit a record 31 consecutive days of 110°F+ this year. The previous record was 18.

This is already affecting those of us in the hottest climates on earth and we are not used to it. People are dying from heart related deaths in their homes, in parking lots, and in their cars. And god forbid you pass out from heat outside- even if you survive you’ll get 3rd degree contact burns in seconds.

Some random headcanon of the Undead Unluck cast because I'm bored (spoilers from the manga until chapter 199).

- Fuuko definitely had a Twitter account dedicated to "To you, from me" manga and she held discussions. Probably was doing threads about her thoughts and was a heated defender lol. Maybe after meeting Andy she went on hiatus to keep her identity a secret.

- Victor spent his first billion years without oxygen, so he probably was like the current Andy chilling inside Earth's crust and magma.

- Juiz was definitely confused when the gender rule was added and the first loop with that rule she was a mess, probably pretended to be a man in the dark ages.

- Victor was also confused at the gender rule but he assumed his manliness more quickly than Juiz. I'm betting he was always a raging feminist because he admires Juiz that much.

- Rip is probably bi because why not.

- Shen is a full straight man, he just likes to dress like that.

- Anno doesn't have a defined gender because Akira is a man who didn't grow up with toxic masculinity (because of his ability), and the fact he loves shojo manga and drawing romance stories.

- With that said, Anno has bishounen face irl and that's why they don't want to show their face to anyone lol.

- Top definitely insulted argentinians in futbol matches.

- Loop 101 Top is definitely kinda afraid of japanese women now.

- After watching the anime and some scenes, Phil likes to hang out with Nico and probably see him like a cool grandpa.

- Tella is 100% gay, look at that man and tell me I'm wrong.

- Loop 100 Gina is bisexual, but loop 101 Gina is, without a doubt, a huge lesbian.

- Victor was happy as hell when the first animals appeared on the earth because he was so hungry in the lifeless earth. He knows dishes that nobody can ever try (maybe Juiz).

- Kinda sad but I think Victor and Juiz didn't have kids because they can't and are sterile somehow, not because they didn't want to.

- Fuuko was catching feelings with Memoirs Andy but she always knew he wasn't the real one, so it's like a forbidden love.

- Loop 101 Fuuko knows english better than japanese.

- Loop 101 Feng catches feelings towards Fuuko but because he is a shitty person he won't admit it ever.

- Andy tried every drug and substance since he can't get addicted or sick. Victor too.

- It is canon that Billy's ability with guns is just pure ability and not related to his negation, so that's definitely something he learned in the army for fun.

- It's funny to think that Andy/Victor, despite being numb to the pain, has a reflex when someone punches their crotch but they don't "feel" the pain anymore.

- Fuuko was chubby in the first part of the series.

Hey, remember that JLU episode titled ‘The Once And Future Thing: Weird Western Tales’ where a couple of JL members ended up stranded in the old West thanks to time travel?  

Well, turns out there was a comic book very similar to it written by Gerry Conway with art by Don Heck but starring a different set of JL members which may or may not have been the inspiration for the episode:   

The episode was written by the late Dwayne McDuffie who was no stranger to writing in references to older comics. For instance, the two parter ‘Brave and the Bold’ Flash’s hallucinations were references to various Silver Age Flash comic covers and he was also very open about the fact that the line up for the Terra Beyond two parter was based on Marvel comics Defenders (no not the Netflix team, the one with Namor and Dr Strange). Even the episode title itself, ‘Weird Western Tales’ is a reference to the long running anthology series of the same name featuring DC’s western characters. 

The story arc in the comics ran from Justice League of America Vol 1 #198-199.     

While it’s hard to conclusively say that the episode was inspired by the comic, there are some interesting similarities like Batlash’s introduction here:

Interesting to note that one of the goons calls her an ‘Eastern Filly’ (is it because of the way she was dressed or a subtle hint that she is not 100% Caucasian?).  The heroes and their new Western cowboy friends all meet at a Saloon: 

Then they all ride off on horses out of town to confront the villain and of course, faces robot cowboys:   

The differences begin with the choice of the time travelling villain, the comic went with classic JL villain: the Lord of Time:   

JLU went with David Clinton, aka Chronos. He’s a different villain who is primarily the enemy of the Atom/Ray Palmer but has also fought the JL on occasion.   

The Lord of Time on the other hand, is a conqueror from the future who travelled back in time with future technology to conquer the past and rule the future. Sound familiar? He was Kang before Kang.  Since JLU’s version of Chronos comes from the future, you could make a case that version is a combination Chronos and Lord of Time.   

Then of course,  there is the line up, the comic features Zatanna, Elongated Man, Barry Allen and Hal Jordan whereas the show features Wonder Woman, Batman and Green Lantern.  Superman also appears trying to thwart the Lord of Time in the present day.     

On the Western heroes side, we got Diablo instead of Cinnamon and Scalphunter is replaced by Pow Wow Smith (and it only takes a cursory glance at the characters wikipedia pages to see why the socially conscious Dwayne McDuffie made that choice).   

The plot of the JLU episode involved a corrupt sheriff using future technology to take over the town but the plot of the comic is a little different. The Lord of Time sent the heroes back in time, erased their memories, because an anti matter meteor was set to strike earth on that day.   The LoT is counting on the heroes to stop the meteor so he can have it for himself so he can use it to conquer the world.  (Why he doesn’t just get the meteor himself? Maybe he didn’t have the technology to?) 

Anyway, the heroes learn about the anti matter meteor heading towards them, Zatanna is reluctant to leave her new found cowgirl girlfriend with her friends to fight the robots:

But she ends up going anyway:   

Can I just say, I really like this shot of Zee and Green Lantern flying together? Even though she is depowered during this period, they never really stuck strictly to the ‘she can only manipulate the elements’ ethos.  Having her flying alongside GL and being unabashed powerhouse is really cool and shows her place among the DCU. There is no ‘she has to be taken out so someone else can shine’ bs here.  Also, reading these comics, I have felt that GL makes the most sense as the field leader of the JL; power based on creativity and will power and they are specifically trained to work together and take on strange extra terrestrial or otherwise threats. I think any of the human GL’s (except maybe Guy) can lead the team.  

Zatanna and GL  manage to stop the meteor. But in present timeline the Lord of Time ends up defeated by Superman (early on he got in a kryptonite trap set by the LoT but managed to escape) just as the time trapped Leaguers make their way back.      

Awww, a krytonite waterfall wasn’t that bad, Clark.    

Overall, the issue was alright. It does feel like placeholder (albeit a fun one) before the big #200 celebration issue (I posted some scans from that here). Come to think of it, the episode came off as filler as well, with the Western parts feeling like a fun romp and ultimately inconsequential to the arcs of the main heroes but the follow up portion set in the Batman Beyond timeline was more impactful and memorable.

I like to think the reason is actually more petty in the loop is because Nico defeated her easily in a 1v1 match in the previous loop and she's so salty that she wants to kill his future wife and prevent Mico's conception as well as make him extra depressed Ghost Arc style

And we don't exactly know the extent of Lan's ability either... But seeing how a lab member is bleeding from the mouth and she's sitting on him so nonchalantly and Nico looks so wary... I'm excited to know

What are exoplanets, and how do we detect them?

First of all: what are exoplanets?

An exoplanet, by definition, is a planet outside our solar system that usually orbits another star within the galaxy. The exoplanets we’ve discovered so far have all been in relatively close proximity, due to limitations in the range of today’s telescopes. 

You may have heard of Proxima Centauri b, the exoplanet closest to Earth, resting 4.2 lightyears away from us. Described by NASA as “a potential rocky world, larger than Earth,” it’s kind of a big deal, since it boosts evidence that planets in habitable zones* exist, and are probably quite close to us. We don’t know, however, if the planet has an atmosphere. 

*habitable zone: a distance at which temperatures are right for liquid water. Also referred to as the ‘Goldilocks zone.’

How do we detect exoplanets?

There are a number of techniques used by scientists to detect exoplanets, but the two main ones are the transit and radial velocity methods.

Transit: when a planet passes exactly between us and a star it orbits, some of the light provided by the star is blocked. The blockage may be miniscule, nearly imperceptible, but it is still there. It’s just about enough for astronomers to realise that there may be an exoplanet orbiting a star. 

Radial velocity: when planets orbit stars, the stars tend to “wobble” a little, i.e. they have an extremely small orbit of their own. This “wobble” changes the colour of light that astronomers see when they observe stars. The light is shifted; if the star is moving in the observer’s direction, it’s shifted to the blue end of the spectrum, and if the star is moving away from the observer, it’ll be red-shifted.

The categories of exoplanets

Gas giants: large planets composed almost entirely of helium and/or hydrogen. Examples familiar to you may include Jupiter or Saturn. Gas giants don’t have hard surfaces; instead, gases swirl above a solid core. However, gas giant exoplanets can be several orders of magnitude larger than Jupiter!

Super-Earths: planets a lot larger than Earth, yet lighter than ice giants like Neptune and Uranus. These can be made of gas, rock, or an arbitrary combination of both. The second closest to us, at the time of writing, is Barnard’s Star b.

Neptunian planets: these are similar to the size of Neptune or Uranus in our solar system. These typically have hydrogen- and helium-filled atmospheres, accompanied by cores of rock and other heavy metals. To date, 1,912 have been discovered, and an example you may recognise is Kepler-1955 b!

Last, but not least, terrestrial planets: examples of these may include Earth, Mars, Mercury, and Venus. For planets outside the solar system, those between half Earth’s size and twice its radius are considered terrestrial. Some rocky exoplanets twice the size of Earth could be terrestrial, but they can also be considered super-Earths. The number of confirmed discoveries for terrestrial planets is a lot lower than Neptune-like planets: we currently have 199!

September 1978. Among the many missed opportunities in DC's haphazard approach to reprinting its massive back catalog is the run of "Mr. & Mrs. Superman" stories from 1978 to 1982, which kicked off with a backup strip in SUPERMAN #327 (above). Created to follow up "Superman Takes a Wife!" from ACTION COMICS #484, which showed the marriage of the Golden Age Clark Kent and Lois Lane, this short feature picked up soon after that story — the first installment has Clark and Lois moving into their new apartment together in the early 1950s. These little stories, mostly written by Nelson Bridwell (although Cary Bates, who wrote ACTION COMICS #484, wrote the first two installments), are very charming, with appealing art by Kurt Schaffenberger and some noteworthy guest-stars. "Superman Takes a Wife!" has been reprinted a number of times, but to my knowledge, the rest have not.

The "Mr. & Mrs. Superman" strip ran in the following issues:

SUPERMAN (1939) #327 and #329

THE SUPERMAN FAMILY (1974) #195–196, #198–199, and #201–222

Most installments are only seven to nine pages, so even including the 22-page "Superman Takes a Wife!" all of this material adds up to only about 280 story pages, which would fit into a reasonably sized single-volume compilation of around 300 pages with covers, title pages, and editorial matter. There are various odds and ends that could fill out a desired page count, like the table of comparisons between the Earth-1 and Earth-2 Supermen from ACTION COMICS #484 and the Golden Age Superman's WHO'S WHO entry from 1986.

Given how much modern Superman stories focus on the partnership of Clark and Lois, "Mr. & Mrs. Superman" was ahead of the curve, and I think this material would appeal to a lot of the people who like SUPERMAN AND LOIS or MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN. Often, DC's approach to older reprints is driven by tie-ins with some media or merchandising project, so this seems an obvious move.
