“He seems to be partaking in human rituals with the second star.”
With his good arm, Dipper quickly searches around for his phone and finds it still neatly packed into a pocket on his cargo pants.
When he clicks it back to life, he finds a plethora of pictures from Mabel. Upon further inspection, they’re all various selfie’s of her and Bill in various stages of a self care night. Ranging from face masks to nail polish and movie marathons.
Mabel still has tears in some photos, but it’s clear that she’s feeling better with every goofy pic that’s sent along, and it’s that small reassurance that has Dipper’s frustration coiling tightly right next to the warmth that blooms in his chest.
When you just rescued your mortal boyfriend who refuses to admit he’s your boyfriend from being a human sacrifice cause he’s always in the wrong place at the right time but he has the self preservation of a sad ant and cares more about his sister being upset than his own injuries (which are substantial) so you take it upon yourself to cheer her up so that he can focus on Not being broken smh cause having a broken mortal boyfriend is not fun at all and sounds like a lot of work.

One of the featured episodes in on disney+'s pride collection is Mr. X/Sprig's Birthday. There are only 26 featured episodes, so that means that about 4% of disney's gay representation is "No Tyler, I will not clown face you."

Are there any other Jason Ritter fans out there? I've recently become obsessed with him; I've stalked his entire filmography and watched everything I could find—some things more than once—and now I've run out, and I have absolutely no one to squeal about him with. It depresses me that no one else seems to be talking about and appreciating this amazing and talented man. So if there are any other Jason Ritter fans out there please just say hi and let me know that I'm not alone. ^.^',

TYPICAL DATE NIGHT WITH HOBIE ★
an: a lil sumn sumn with hobie
gender-neutral!reader & no use of y/n
content: cheesy bc i say so, some silly cuteness, heated make-out sesh
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You heard continuous light taps coming from your bedroom window. You recognized the sounds as pebbles being thrown and instantly, you knew it was him. Glee began to overflow your entire being as you hurriedly bookmarked the page you were on and dropped the book you were reading.
You practically jumped off your bed and rushed over to open your window. Your eyes drifted downward and landed on Hobie’s figure that was currently in a humanly-impossible position against your apartment’s brick wall. His feet seemed glued to the wall while he balanced himself vertically off of it.
He was always random with the stunts he’d pull since he disliked consistency and loved finding different ways to surprise you. You playfully rolled your eyes at him in disbelief, not being able to fully grasp the fact that your boyfriend was quite literally defying gravity; a perk of being spiderpunk.
“Hey, babe, got somethin’ I wanna play for you!” he shouted.
You watched as he effortlessly whipped out his guitar from behind as if he wasn’t 40 feet off the ground.
“shoot!” you shouted back.
With zero hesitation, Hobie powerfully struck the chords once before playing an impressive guitar riff, just for you. His gifted fingers ran up and down the chords, allowing the guitar to produce the electrifying, melodic sound you loved so much. He was nothing short of a virtuoso, so cool, you thought.
“What’d you think?” Hobie asked, not needing your approval, though he’d appreciate it very much.
“It was awesome!! I loved it, baby.” you gushed with clasped hands.
“Good.” was all he said, then he shot a web at the edge of your window to yank himself up and kiss your lips.
The soft embrace of his lips was all you needed to feel warm and at peace again. Life outside of your relationship was tiring and hectic, but the precious moments you shared with him calmed the storm.
“Come in!” you beckoned, after pulling away.
“Ma pleasure.” he said before tucking his guitar behind him and climbing in through your window.
“So, I got a couple of movie ideas…we down for rom-coms or slashers tonight?” you asked as grabbed the dvds.
“I think we exhausted all the slasher films known to man, love. I could go for some ‘13 going on 30’ right about now.” he threw himself on your bed.
Your mouth slightly fell agape, “I can’t believe you just said that.”
“What? A man can’t switch it up every now and then?” his brows furrowed.
“He can, but every time I put on ‘13 going on 30’ you fall asleep half way through!” you lightly smacked his side as you laid down next to him.
“I’m not the same person I was last week, hell, I ain’t even the same man I was two seconds ago! I’m a changed man.” he shrugged his shoulders.
“Oh, cut the crap! You do not wanna watch it with me.” you claimed incredulously.
“Like I said, I’m a changed man.” he told you in a half-serious manner.
“You’re so stupid.” you rolled your eyes again, then you both laughed it off.
“No, but I do wanna see it with you, babe. I can’t handle another modern horror film, it’s all just uncalled for gore and porn; no substance whatsoever. It’s bollucks.” he shook his head disapprovingly.
“I’m sayinggg!” you agreed, remembering how dreadful the last horror flick you saw was.
“Wait, before we watch, can we make pizza like last time?” he asked hopefully.
“Sure, why not?” you got up and tossed the slasher dvds to the side and placed ‘13 going on 30’ next to the dvd station.
Hobie hated ordering pizza. Not because he was too shy to order, that’s why apps exist. Moreover, he hated ordering pizza because the anarchist in him preferred baking pizza at home instead of supporting the cooperate companies that prepared the same pizza.
He’d physically cringe and his face would contort into disgust whenever you’d suggest delivery instead because you were too lazy to bake. “I’ll do it by myself then!” he’d groan.
That is how the first three hours of your date night with Hobie is spent; attempting to bake spidey shaped pizzas with the clash playing in the background, throwing sauce at each other’s faces, eating said pizzas while watching 13 going on 30, teasing Hobie for shredding a tear at the wedding scene, Hobie teasing you for sobbing after that scene, you two cuddling at the end while being wrapped up in your largest blanket, and you rewarding him a kiss because finishing rom-coms with him gives you the best feeling ever. It’s the rom-com glow.
You’ll usually suggest another film or perhaps a show to binge watch, and you two immerse yourselves in that for about another three hours. Sweet whispers are exchanged from time to time and Hobie’s dispersed kisses across your neck make a feature.
“You’re really cute when you look all focused.” he said out of the blue.
You hadn’t realized he had been admiring your face for a while now, or that his focus was shifting elsewhere.
“This is reality tv! There’s lots of drama to keep up with.” you reasoned without turning to look at him.
“Look at me.” he simply said.
“Amanda’s just about to find out her husband’s having an affair!” you quickly tapped him, trying not to lose concentration from the screen. Without warning, the show was suddenly muted.
“Hey, why’d you-
“Com’ere.” he gently grabbed your chin and hushed you with his lips.
You kissed him back, then pulled away asking, “what?”
“I don’ know. Just felt a huge urge to kiss you.” he admitted as his mouth curved into a smile.
“Oh. Well, I have no problem Mr. suspense-ruiner, as long as you continue to do it.” you cupped his face, forgot all about the tv and brought him in for another smooch.
He rubbed one hand on your hip. You two were laying side by side, but his slow, gentle touch made you want to change that.
The hand rubbing on your hip made its way up to your shoulders and down again, in yet another slow, teasing manner. He caressed the side of your body, then let his hand slide dangerously down onto your rump. He gave it soft squeeze and you hummed; his touch aroused the growing swarm of excitement in your abdomen.
You swung a leg over his torso and he was able to smooth his hand over your thigh. He’d run his hand up and down, his gentle caressing becoming a bit more firm. The feel of your bodies pressing against each other made this moment all the more enticing. Neither of you could get enough. With every hum or whimper you’d allow to escape, Hobie could feel himself twitch.
You extended your hand and lightly rubbed his shoulder. After a moment, your hand dropped to his bicep and began to grope the defined muscle. Eventually, you had to pull away to catch your breath and you both would only chuckle while looking at each other.
Hobie kept his hands on you as you took the initiative to straddle his waist. His hands shifted to your hips and he gave you a reassuring look before saying, “Absolutely no pressure, love. We go as far as your comfortable with.”
You appreciated how he reassured you every time to ensure that you were comfortable. He made you feel seen and at ease. Definitely one of the most refreshing parts of your companionship with him.
“Mhm, of course.” you nodded.
“I love you, sweetheart.” he professed with hooded eyes.
“I love you too.”

This is a Buddie fic rec list where "one of them isn't a firefighter" That makes me warm and happy every time I read them <3
Part 1 || Part 2
Spousal Secrets and Celebrity Crushes by AshwinMeird (@ashwinmeird) | 9k | General
Eddie joined the 118 and Hen learned plenty about his husband and son through endless stories, but she knew almost nothing about Buck. Then a movie being filmed not far from the station starts to become very relevant to her life. Or Five times Hen was confused about Eddie's husband and One time it all made sense
i'll walk through fire for you by prettyboybuckley (@greyacebuckley) | 3k | General
Eddie just shrugs, and they leave him alone, chattering about something he tunes out as he stares out the window. At least, until Bobby starts briefing them on what they're walking into.
He hears the address, and his stomach turns. That's where Buck lives.
"There was an explosion somewhere in the building," Bobby tells them over the comms. "Third floor is fully engulfed, the building is unstable, and there are people trapped up there, still. There's one other firehouse on the scene already."
OR: In a universe where Buck is not a firefighter but they're still best friends, Eddie gets called to a fire at Buck's apartment building
call you home by ashavahishta (@ashavahishta) | 6k | General
"He’s like, so pretty sometimes I can’t believe he’s real?” He’d rambled once, so tired at the end of shift he was basically drunk with it.
“I’ll take your word for it,” Hen had said patiently, and patted him on the shoulder. “I like girls, remember?”
“He’s built like a Greek god with the face of an angel,” Eddie had argued, a stubborn set to his mouth like he was determined for Hen to believe just how gorgeous his husband was. “Even you couldn’t resist that.”
Or: "Eddie Diaz drinks his 'I fucking love my husband' juice for 6,000 words." OR "5 Times Eddie Told The Firefam About Buck and 1 Time They Actually Met Him".
we're not in love (but the sex is good) by elless | 15k | Explicit
Eddie is new to LA. Feeling lonely, he goes to a bar for a drink and meets a beautiful stranger that kisses like a dream. What starts as a one night stand quickly moves to frequent no strings sex. When circumstances lead to them spending time together out of bed, Eddie realizes he’s attached to Buck in a way he never planned for.
the handyman can ('cause he fixes it with love) by iphigenias (@oatflatwhite) | 4k | Teen
Eddie’s first thought when he opens the door is that Hen’s finally getting payback for Eddie hustling her in pool last Friday. The guy standing on the stoop is sweaty, smiling, with biceps that look like they could jaws-of-life a car all on their own and a very pink, very biteable kiss of a birthmark above his crinkled blue eyes. His toolbelt looks like every toolbelt from every bad porn movie ever, slung absurdly low on his hips, and the acid-wash jean shorts he’s wearing absolutely cannot be OSHA-approved.
Eddie decidedly does not look at the thick muscle of the guy’s thighs when he says, “uh, I think you have the wrong house.”
we can’t fight gravity (love is like falling) by alasse (@alasse9) | 21k | Teen
Eddie is an actor (a former child star of a major franchise who only does weird indie movies nowadays), and Buck is still a firefighter. The universe screams at them a few times—through a tsunami, an unfortunate misunderstanding, and an emergency at a movie set—until they finally get it together.
Close My Eyes and Stumble (Right Into Your Love) by HMSLusitania (@hmslusitania) | 21k | Mature
Eddie's PTSD is just that little bit worse and when he moves to Los Angeles, instead of joining the LAFD, he joins dispatch.
Which is all good and fine, except for this one firefighter he keeps ending up talking to.
(is in the back of my mind and on the tip of my tongue) by waferkya (@oursisthewinter) | 17k | Teen
Soft, dark hair, just long enough to begin curling at the tips; expressive eyebrows and an impossibly straight nose that should belong on some Greek statue, full pink lips stretched in a wide smile just this side of goofy, and a wonderful amount of stubble dusting his jaw; broad shoulders hugged to perfection by the dark blue police uniform, his entire body a stretch of tight muscle. Yeah, yup, yes. Chim is not wrong. The man is handsome as sin. Also, he’s a cop, which—hi, hello, that’s hot.
[AU in which Eddie is a cop who just moved to LA; Buck has zero self-esteem, a praise kink the size of the desert and no clue on how to pick a decent Dom; and eventually love conquers all.]
Write me into your happy ending... by ReallySmartLadyMarieCurie | 16k | Teen
Four years ago when Eddie and Christopher started reading the book series about Daniel's Adventures together before bedtime, Eddie never would have guessed that he would run into the author of said book series in the middle of a Barnes & Noble in LA. He also wouldn't have guessed that said encounter would begin with him sternly lecturing the stranger and making a slight fool of himself. Nor would he have predicted that this terrible first impression would somehow make the published author want to give his phone number to Eddie.
Or, Eddie the firefighter and Buck the writer have a meet-cute, and things progress from there.
i wanna be known (by you) by chasingoblivion (@starlightbuck) | 12k | General
“I didn’t mean to do it.” Hen glances down at Eddie’s phone then back up at him in disbelief. “How do you ‘not mean’ to download a bunch of dating apps but still have them on your phone?” Or  In which Eddie delves into the intimidating world of online dating.
String of hearts... by ReallySmartLadyMarieCurie | 11k | Teen
“Now. Eddie is this incredible presence. He’s funny and smoking hot, and he has a son who sounds wonderful. And he’s serious and vulnerable at times. But so enjoyable to be around, every single second that he’s there. And how can I put myself out there when the expectation is so high? When the thing I might lose is so beautiful?”
In which Buck owns a plant shop in LA, and Eddie becomes his new favorite customer. Pining ensues.
Confirmation Bias by strifechaos | 31k | Mature
After the fallout with his ex-wife, Eddie believed he could only trust his family with his son. He hadn’t imagined falling for his son’s sweet-hearted nanny, Buck.
With his own family so distant, Buck never considered that he’d be lucky enough to find a home for himself, let alone people he could count on. Not until he meets the Diaz boys.
AU: Buck was never a firefighter, and becomes Christopher's sitter when Shannon's job takes her away from Eddie and Chris for the summer. Eddie tries to not fall for his son's nanny, he's not very successful.
serendipity (can't get him off my mind) by elless | 7k | Teen
Buck has his job at the daycare, his sister, and good friends. And not much else. His life hasn't turned out how he expected. Then he gets a wrong number text that changes everything. He and Eddie click instantly, but Eddie lives in Texas while Buck is in LA. It can never work, especially if Buck is too afraid to make a move.
Buckley's Bouquets by awashleyno | 23k | Teen
A world where Buck owns a flower shop and manages to develop a huge, massive, ridiculous crush on a handsome firefighter that comes in for a visit one day.
Or, 5 times Eddie gives flowers to other people and the 1 time he gives them to Buck.
the meaning of the words you see by florenceandthemachine (@florenceandthemachine) | 8k | Explicit
unknown sender: Hi! unknown sender: Just wanted to say thanks for letting me buy you a drink, and for your number. Sorry I had to run. unknown sender: I’m Eddie by the way. sent: hey um sent: i don’t want 2 be this guy but sent: i think u mayb put the wrong # in ur phone
Frequent Flyer by red_to_black (@redtooblack) | 13k | Mature
In his entire time being a firefighter, Eddie has never met anyone as accident-prone as Evan Buckley. And Buck - well, he's quickly becoming the 118's best customer.
(Or - the one where Eddie is a firefighter, Buck isn't, and Eddie finds himself rescuing Buck from increasingly sticky situations. Sometimes literally.)
i'm gonna make this place your home by chromatophorica (@chromatophorica) | 11k | Teen
"Hey, did you know that other people can go to the kids' islands on that game?" He asks Hen the following day at work, stocking up the ambulance with her while Chim teaches the probie how to roll hoses.
"Yeah, I mean, they go to each other's all the time." Which, yeah, in a way, Eddie knew that part
"No, I mean other people, like people on the internet or whatever." Hen shoots him a look, one that states he's showing his usual technophobic ways again. “I'm just saying, some person that Chris called 'Buck' was on his island just like... giving him things.” It feels a lot like those stories about grooming or whatever, when the internet was new and people pretended to be something they weren't. What if this Buck person was an old guy in a creepy basement trying to befriend kids on a game? --- During the pandemic, Christopher gets more involved in online gaming. Eddie promptly freaks out when he realises his son has made a friend through the games. It takes Chimney's girlfriend and a car crash to understand how important that friend will be.

Best Underrated Anime Tournament Information
What kind of anime are eligible to join this competition?
Although I’m using the term “anime,” I don’t actually mean only Japanese anime. Donghua (Chinese) and Aeni (Korean) are also allowed. Any other “anime-style” series also count.
I’ve decided to use the term “anime” and not “animated show” or “animation” so that nobody will submit cartoons like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, etc. (Not that these are underrated, but you get the point.)
Anyways, only anime that reach the following criteria is allowed to join the competition:
It is underrated. No MP 100, Ouran High School Host Club, Yuri on Ice, and whatever other anime is popular (especially if it’s popular on Tumblr).
It is a series. No movies, short films, and the like.
It is recent. There are probably a lot of underrated shows from the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s, but I’d like to only include anime from 2010 onward. Why? Because I feel older anime will have an unfair advantage in being more known because they’ve existed longer.
It has at least one complete season. New anime that are currently airing and has no prior season are not allowed to join.
It’s in “anime-style.”
Note: Anime with multiple seasons will be counted as one. The year its first season was released is what will be checked to determine if it’s a recent one.

Iconic (Defying Gravity)
If you look up "iconic Broadway songs", you get lists upon lists of musical numbers, but there are a few constants. Beside One Day More from Les Misérables, Don't Cry For Me Argentina from Evita, and Seasons Of Love from Rent, you will usually find Defying Gravity, from Wicked.
If you think about it, this is actually rather weird, right? The aforementioned songs are about preparing for death, dying, and looking back on life, respectively. Defying Gravity is about a witch deciding to fly. A story that is objectively fantastical (it depicts magic and flying monkeys in a place that definitely does not exist) stands next to stories of real-world history and events, and nobody bats an eyelid because... well... because it's just that good.
This is like a corgi winning a race fair and square against a ton of cheetahs.
I think it's worth examining just what Defying Gravity does to stand beside giants, and what story it is telling.
Let me explain.
SPOILERS AHEAD: (Wicked)
Tumblr media
Defying Gravity is a battle cry.
When you examine a piece of media, the first thing you need to understand is what it is that that piece of media is trying to achieve. For example, if you examine a commercial for toothpaste through the same lens as a commercial film, that commercial will fall short. Similarly, if you examine a song that is trying to get stuck in your head through a classical, technical lens, things get funky.
You can, of course, apply those different lenses if you want. That's the fun thing about art, there are few rules. But even then, you need to understand the purpose of the text.
Defying Gravity is a battle cry.
It is a song that calls to arms its listeners. It says to Oz that things will get better, if Elphaba has to tear down the world to make it so. And it tells the audience to get excited, because someone has just started shaking things up.
The song is a turning point in the musical. It is the end of act one, and it sets the trajectory of the second half of the story. It defines how the characters will behave going forwards. But also...
Defying Gravity is a breakup song.
I don't think the two are disconnected at all. Wicked is about reality and dreams colliding, and it follows the seeking of freedom. The twist is that for freedom, you have to give up your safety, and Glinda isn't prepared to do that, but Elphaba is.
Tumblr media
This is a piece by @abd-illustrates (Youtube, Deviantart). Although I believe it's technically about No Good Deed, I feel it's relevant here and a spectacular feat of artistic merit that I had to put it in.
Wicked has been accused of queer bating by fans, and while I see that angle, I don't quite agree. I think that the romantic relationship between Glinda and Elphaba does happen, but the fact that it doesn't work is key to the story. They are doomed lovers, and this song is that breaking point.
What is more valuable to our protagonists? Autonomy or stability? Both characters pick different options, and that incompatibility tears them apart.
"Elphaba, why couldn't you have stayed calm for once? Instead of flying off the handle!
I hope you're happy
I hope you're happy now
I hope you're happy how
you've hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you're clever"
Glinda's perspective here is clear, she believes in the system she is a part of. She sees its flaws, but because they work for her, she sees them as strengths. And this is understandable, the system has only benefited her, so she is blind to its faults.
But understandable is not the same as agreeable, and I am inclined to follow Elphaba's logic here. The system is unjust, and directly in opposition to her goal of fairness and equality. She wants to make the world a better place, and now that the system's lies are revealed to her, she needs to take things in a different direction.
"I hope you're proud how you would grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition"
So, the sides are established, and this song serves as a battle of ideas. Both characters want their friend to join them, and its notable how they go about doing that.
Tumblr media
Glinda falls on aspiration and references a previous song to get her point across.
"You can still be with the wizard
What you've worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted"
I feel the need to point out that Glinda wasn't present when Elphaba sang The Wizard and I, and yet she matches the tune and meaning almost perfectly. Elphaba hasn't merely told Glinda her dream, she has shared her dream with her, and confided in her that incredibly vulnerable side of herself.
Elphaba acted so differently in The Wizard and I than in the rest of the story, she was less guarded, and more childish with that naive hope that she holds onto throughout the entirety of the show. That hope just becomes less naive and more relentless.
Elphaba has shared that naivety and hope and whimsicality with Glinda, and it's that relationship that Glinda is calling on now. Remember us, remember our dream.
Tumblr media
However, for all Glinda's canniness and understanding of the world, she doesn't understand people, and she doesn't understand Elphaba.
Elphaba wanted to meet the wizard for a reason. She had a motive behind her dream that superseded the specifics of how it would play out.
"But I don't want it
No, I can't want it anymore"
Notice the vernacular that Elphaba uses. She can't want to be with the wizard. In her mind, doing the right thing isn't a choice. To Elphaba, good is a force that has pushed her to where she is right now, and forced her to sing this song.
Essentially, Elphaba is a paragon hero and is actively unmaking the grey morality of the setting. Often in media, "realism" is shorthand for everyone being either selfish or misunderstood. It's a pessimistic worldview of life that I don't entirely agree with.
That does happen in real life, don't get me wrong. The vast majority of the world is made up of people who are capable of actions that are good, bad, or neither.
But there are people out there who are truly cruel and evil, trust me, I've met some of them. But I've also met their opposite, people who are kind and compassionate and do what they think is right because to them, there isn't another option.
Tumblr media
Elphaba is that second type of person, and the musical has got its audience to take this for granted at this point. But it's worth remembering that this character is the Wicked Witch of the West, the cartoon bad guy of an iconic work of literature. The musical hasn't made her more morally nuanced; it has made the world more nuanced, and that has reframed this character entirely.
The song even reminds the audience of this fact through the ensemble, just to make the juxtaposition more obvious.
"Look at her! She's wicked, get her.
No one mourns the wicked! So we've got to bring her
Down"
This is actually foreshadowing for a later song.
Tumblr media
Back to this part, the backing of the song has spent the majority of its run time playing elaborate movements, but for Galinda and Elphaba's talk about dreams, it simplifies. Galinda gets a bare trickle of that floaty harmony, but Elphaba gets next to nothing for her line. Mostly.
This, combined with the slowing down effect brought on by the fermata (the symbol that looks like an eye), gives the conversation an intimate tone. The two have just each other to hear, and nothing to get in the way. It also frames Elphaba's line as reassurance. There is a storm coming and she is telling her girlfriend that things are going to work out ok in the end.
Tumblr media
However, the big chords come back in on the "anymore" and lead into the key change that covers the rest of the song. This is a metaphor for the change that is happening in Elphaba's mind. As she makes her decision on how to proceed, and recognises that things are now different, the slow build up to this song's finale is finally got underway.
The rest of this song is just a build up to a final crash of sound. It rises in a few beats with the choruses, as Elphaba tests her wings, so to speak. And the song gains momentum slowly as more instruments are added.
Tumblr media
If you thought I wasn't going to at least reference Glee's multiple performances of this song and how in that series, Defying Gravity is explicitly synonymous with queerness and pride, welcome to the blog. I make analysis posts, maybe stick around if you like this kind of thing.
"Too late for second guessing,
too late to go back to sleep"
There are two separate ideas being intertwined here. First up is the reiteration of Elphaba's inability to stop. Once again, she is doing the right thing because someone has to do it, and soon it will be too late. But the duality of this phase links that idea with the revelation about Oz. She can't go back to sleep, she can't go back to ignorance. Now that she knows what she knows, she has to act.
Tumblr media
"Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost.
Well, if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost."
This isn't particularly complex storytelling, but it's effective none the less. Elphaba is saying her realisations out loud to keep the audience up to speed. In this instance, she has been chasing acceptance, and now understands that she was never going to get it from Oz, and that what she would have to do to obtain a facade of understanding is not worth it.
The fact that my analysis of that phrase is just saying it again but slightly differently is a pretty good example of how effective the storytelling in the line is.
Tumblr media
"I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down"
The first chorus of this song is remarkably understated. It doesn't have the confidence of latter verses, and I will discuss why I think that is in a moment. The orchestra pulls back to a few instruments, and the drum plays a light rhythm on one of its... ok I my musical knowledge is a bit limited here. The bit of the drum that goes "tss tss tss", you know the one.
This gives it a light feeling that adds to the unsteady feeling of the chorus as Elphaba tests the waters and learns to fly. But she needs guidance, and support, and who does she turn to for that?
Tumblr media
"Glinda, come with me."
This is the first time Elphaba has been thinking on the spot. Usually, she thinks everything through before she says it, but now she is running entirely on a single train of thought. I cannot stress enough how this thought process is literally: "love, kiss goodbye, Glinda". Historians will say they were close friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A leitmotif is a recurring musical phrase that represents a certain theme. For example, earlier in the musical, Galinda's "you deserve each other" musical phrase was repeated to show false relationships and false promises, and was also used in The Wizard and I to foreshadow the false promise of the Wizard and his gifts.
The Unlimited Leitmotif is used exclusively to symbolise Elphaba and Glinda's relationship. You can read that as platonic if you want, but there are some context clues that I would argue suggest otherwise. For example, it's called the "Unlimited" leitmotif for a reason.

As I have kept harping on about, the most valuable thing a person can achieve in this musical is freedom. This is a song about defying the laws of physics themselves. And the thing that Elphaba is offering Glinda here, the thing that is so defining for their relationship that it is literally the shorthand for it, is complete and total freedom.
Together, the two are unlimited.
Tumblr media
The second chorus is sung together. Glinda gives Elphaba the strength of spirit to continue and is quite literally the reason she can fly in the first place.
But Glinda doesn't want that. She wants to feel in control of herself more than autonomy, and that's why the relationship falls apart. The two are doomed lovers, and it's not because one of them lies or cheats or any of that soap opera nonsense, but because they want different things out of life.
"Well, are you coming?"
"I hope you're happy
Now that you're choosing this"
"You, too
I hope it brings you bliss"
All in all, I think this breakup goes remarkably well. The two realise that their lives are taking each of them in a direction that the other cannot follow, and so they offer their goodbyes peacefully and get ready for the finale of this act.
Glinda even gives Elphaba a cloak to protect her from the elements as a final goodbye gift. Which, if you are keeping track, means that both the hat and the cloak, the Wicked Witch's most iconic visual elements besides her skin, were gifts from a very close friend.
Tumblr media
I don't need to explain why the final chorus of this song is so good, do I? The music is phenomenal, the vocal performance is unrivaled, and it outright says half of the points I have been trying to make in this post.
I do think that the sheer skill on display here is important for the theming as well. Yes, the high note symbolises the flight and escape, yes it's synonymous with rising above petty grievances, and yes the rising is literally a reverse Deus Ex Machina. But it's also just the actress who plays Elphaba showing off and having a blast. There are no limits on her vocal performance, she doesn't have to rein in anything, and she can instead belt out a number as loud and powerfully as she wants because nobody is stopping her.
Tumblr media
"As someone told me lately,
Everyone deserves a chance to fly"
This is a reference to something that the Wizard said to Elphaba, but when he said it, he was completely talking out of his arse. The Wizard, and a significant portion of Oz as a whole, parade around saying nebulously benevolent things, but they don't actually mean it. The Wizard has created a nation based around surveillance and oppression, there is no way that he believes in everyone getting a fair go.
The important thing to understand is that the Wizard's worldview is wrong. Everyone does deserve fairness. So his lie to appease Elphaba was in fact true. Elphaba's role in this is making that lie into a reality, by giving the people someone who will say things honestly and try to actually make the world a better place.
Tumblr media
Finally, however, as the lights prepare to shut off and Elphaba rises into the distance. Glinda stands beneath her, looking up. She is now just another face in the crowd, but her sentiment stands in stark contrast to the rest of Oz.
Simultaneously, Glinda says goodbye, and wishes Elphaba good luck on the road ahead.
"I hope you're happy."
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts
It needs to be understood that part of why Defying Gravity stands beside historical giants like Don't Cry For Me Argentina is the fact that it is fantastical.
Wicked is a musical about the relentlessness of hope. It is set in a world where anything is possible, and it brings that to life. Through the application of some truly impressive stagecraft, the actress who plays Elphaba genuinely flies for all to see.
This is a story that takes the impossible and makes it possible, and this is the song which cemented that theme in the minds of anyone who watched it. This song fully deserves its place as my second favourite in this musical.
That's right, my favourite is yet to come, and I'm enjoying watching y'all guess at what it is in the replies.
Next week, I will be looking at Thank Goodness and how it sets up the plot of the second act. So, stick around if that interests you.

The Disney Channel Magical Holiday Express
Tumblr media
Christmas in Disney World never fails to disappoint each year. Employees redecorated every single building in the park to put families in the holiday mood. Not to mention the Disney princesses and stars from the films appear to spread cheer for the holidays. Especially from Star Wars and Marvel. However, whenever fans of Disney enjoy the spreading of cheers from Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel characters and attractions, they couldn't get over the fact that Disney Channel Cartoon stars never get their attractions during the holidays. They may spend time at the parks in Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom, but little compared to other famous franchises. They never got their attraction greenlit due to bigger plans from the company making more attractions in four parks. But it all changed when right after last year's Christmas, the Disney Channel Cartoon stars finally made an agreement to the Walt Disney Company to open their own Christmas Attraction, but a mobile one at that.
In Jacksonville at the Amtrak Station, people are taking the night trip to Orlando where Disney World is at. But when it comes to the Disney World Vacation Package, people usually take flights to Florida. If travelers are close to Orlando, they get an exclusive deal to take the train with the attraction they've been hearing about since mid Spring. After the train to Miami left, it was only a matter of time for the train to arrive for Orlando. Friends and families are eager to spend their three hours in the mobile attraction that Disney created.
"Hey!" A young girl pointed. "It's finally coming!"
Everyone turned their attention to the train that's a quarter of a mile from arriving at the station. But unlike the train people took from time to time, the train is a lot more different, not because of it being decorated in Christmas lights. It's painted with Disney Channel colors they show on TV during the holiday season, the passenger trains show characters of the cartoons on display with Christmas outfits but what will entertain people the most is what's taking place from the inside.
When the train stopped at the station, the doors opened revealed Mabel from Gravity Falls with her reindeer antlers on her head and Molly from The Ghost And Molly McGee wearing a Santa outfit. "Ladies and gentlemen!" Mabel cheered after walking out with Molly from behind. "Welcome to The Disney Channel Magical Holiday Express!"
As Molly leaned close to the kids, she presented the Holiday Express itself. "The most Fa-La-La entertainment express for your trip to Orlando!" She squealed.
"It will be the best three hours of your holiday experience." Mabel and Molly invited all the passengers inside the train. The kids loved the short but charming introduction from two stars, one of which ended their show almost eight years ago along with another who's two years old.
There were three classes for passengers to sit for their trip to Orlando which each class decorated with tons of Christmas decorations. But the separate classes behind the engine car is where the stars are relaxing and preparing for their performances. In the first class of the express, Kristine from Hailey's On It in her fancy Mrs. Claus' outfit is making her railway announcement with all the passengers putting their luggage away.
"K-Squad, this is Kristine, the Mrs. Claus Queen telling you that we're starting the train to Orlando where Disney World is at!" She smiled with her voice being heard from the speakers. "The Holiday Express will be more than the Polar Express, except for the train going on thin ice that is." The passengers laugh from the compliment. "Anyway, enjoy our railway trip." She put her microphone away as she headed back to the classes from the front.
In no time at all, the smoke from the engine came out as the train moved on the railway from the Station. The kids and teens couldn't believe they met three stars they barely see at attractions, aside from conventions. It was almost like what they read wasn't a lie or changed at the last minute. And things are getting better from here on out.
Cricket and Tilly from Big City Greens came out with Cricket holding mugs filled with coffee, while Tilly is holding a tray of butter biscuits. "Anybody in the mood for a warming Christmas beverage?" Cricket smiled.
"Along with special Christmas biscuits made by grandma!" Tilly added as the passengers paid and received the mugs and biscuits. The kids were thrilled to see the current Disney Channel Cartoon stars appear from their very eyes. When Tilly handed a biscuit to the girl in the purple jacket, she gave her a hug without hesitation. "Oh, such a sweet gesture."
"Knew this is what we wanted." Cricket commented after getting a fist bump from a teen. While they head to the second class of the express, kids and teens get a chance to watch episodes from their favorite Disney Channel Cartoons old and present from the installed TVs hanging from above. For the next twenty minutes, they can use the TVs to watch twenty two minute or two eleven minute episodes until Holiday Express continues its brand new gig.
After Cricket and Tilly finished up with the third class, they headed back to the separate classes. They took a break after doing their job and for twenty minutes, it's time to spice things up. "Okay, it's your turn now." Tilly whispered.
"Go out there and hit a home run, Christmas style!" Cricket added.
While fans were enjoying watching their favorite episodes, the screen changed into the high quality cam from the first class. It catched them off guard but not too long, the main star from Hailey's On It and Marcy from Amphibia appeared from the door. With headset microphones for the classes from the back to hear.
"Marcy," Hailey called, straightening her Santa hat. "Where are your other friends? You said they would come along on this express."
"I did, but they got side tracked from their holiday shopping rush this afternoon, so that's why they missed the train." Marcy showed Hailey her phone.
"But we're supposed to make these passengers occupied. What about Luz?"
Then Amity appeared from the door in her Mrs. Claus outfit. "Sorry! She missed the train because she forgot to bring her gift." She stepped in.
"Seriously!?"
"These passengers need to arrive at Disney World, but without our friends, what can we do?" Marcy asked, to which Dipper from Gravity Falls came out in a conductor outfit.
"Everyone, calm down!" He called to the three's attention. "I'm fully aware that we don't have our biggest Disney Channel stars, but we can still occupy the passengers. We have enough stars in the front for entertainment."
"But Dipper, giving entertainment from our biggest stars is what people wanted. I'm not enough without my best friends."
"Yeah and Luz always lightens up the mood, especially during Christmas." Amity added.
"Hey, that doesn't mean we have newer stars who became fan favorites this year. Including you Hailey." While Hailey blushed, Dipper turned his attention to the passengers. "Everyone, please welcome, Casey!" As he headed back to the front, Casey from Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur appeared in her stylized yellow Santa outfit.
"Hey everybody!" She cheered while taking a selfie with the passengers. "Usually our conductor makes the introductions, but he gave me the liberty for that along with an exciting entrance. We don't have a grand stage to fit in the Holiday Express but we can still add excitement right?" The kids in all classes cheered yes, much to Casey's surprise. "Well, I'm thankful that my headset didn't explode."
"My ears still hurt though." Hailey retorted while taking off her headset.
"You get used to it after a while." Marcy added.
"Anyway, I want you all to welcome...Moon Girl!"
After giving the introduction, the door from the third class that shows the railtrack, opened, taking the passengers off guard. Moon Girl was skating on the rails of the track with only one boot from her superhero outfit. She jumped through the back, while shutting the door with her leg.
The passengers make an applause from the out of nowhere entrance from Moon Girl, as if they expected it to happen in first class. "Merry Christmas everyone!" She cheered.
"Here's my favorite superhero!" Casey appeared in the third class.
"Well, I made it before the holiday rush, trust me, Christmas isn't always about happiness when it comes to last minute shopping." Moon Girl greeted her best friend.
"We've all been there."
The passengers laughed, while the two continued the show. "So, since we have..." She looked through her goggles. "More than two and a half hours until we arrive at Disney World. The only thing we need to keep an eye on is upcoming Christmas crashers."
"Christmas crashers?" A black boy responded to which Moon Girl turned to.
"Yes. Like birthday crashers, but for Christmas instead.".
"While I've taken care of my enemies, but when it comes to other shows, they found out we've been working on this Holiday Express just before we started building it."
"You mean these?" Casey showed Moon Girl her phone.
"Yes, Chip Whistler hijacked this whole express to turn it into their own Wholesome Foods express." With kids gasping from the news itself, Moon Girl looked through the windows from both sides. "The good news is however, they're nowhere in sight, but they told The Green Family they're on their way when they informed us yesterday. Plus I'm in charge of being the lookout outside of the train." She headed back to the door she came in. "Sorry for not entertaining you all, but this is a serious mission to save your Christmas vacation at Disney World."
The moment she prepared to open the door, the kids cheered Moon Girl from all classes in the Holiday Express. To which she smiled as she headed out. She went on top of the train to look out for Chip Whistler. On the TVs, it shows Moon Girl sitting down while giving them the thumbs up. Soon the TV screens turned back to where the passengers left off.
As the Holiday Express was just forty five miles from its destination, the passengers, mainly the kids, were calm after what Moon Girl told them earlier while still enjoying the Holiday Express. Soon enough, four stars appeared in the first class from Amphibia, Sprig, his sister Polly and Anne's parents, Mrs. and Mr. Boonchuy in their Christmas outfits. But they only head their way to the second class to give it some more attention. Upon entering the second class, they only have one microphone in Sprig's possession, but they're gonna turn this Holiday Express into something more.
"Hey everybody. Sprig, Polly, and Anne's parents are here to keep you occupied." Sprig replied. "Now I know what you're thinking, sorry but I didn't get a word from Anne yet." He showed everyone his phone.
Polly grabbed the microphone from her brother to fill in. "The holiday shopping rush really got her and Sasha in the way." She added. "There's more reasons why we Planters don't celebrate Christmas in our world but, let's just say we're anything but Christmas crashers."
Polly gave the microphone to Mrs. Boonchuy while looking at the passengers. "I've gone through so many Holiday shopping rushes when Anne was little, but the day at the Christmas-Palooza parade, she and her friends built the Thai Go float which is..." She stopped herself with a tear coming down from her eye. "My dream is to go out at the parade with the float."
Everyone was touched by Mrs. Boonchuy's words to even imagine the dedication Anne did for her own mother. "But the less said about what happened at the parade, the better." Mr. Boonchuy leaned towards the microphone.
"And on Christmas morning, she gave me this." Mrs. Boonchuy showed everyone the Blue Butterfly. "It's been decades since I've enjoyed Christmas before Anne was born. This gift is what really takes me back from that Christmas."
With the passengers clapping from Mrs. Boonchuy speech, she gave the microphone back to Sprig. "When it comes to me, Polly, and Hop Pop's first Christmas, we had to learn the chaos way of being one of the most stressful holidays but we're still anything but Christmas crashers." He walked up towards the people from the back of the cabin, while showing people a picture from his phone. "This is me and Anne with her holding my gift to her. It wasn't the best gift in the world, but she accepted it."
"Which is what I've learned," Polly walked up to Sprig. "That being with people close enough can still show appreciation."
"Speaking of appreciation," Sprig pointed at Mr. Boonchuy, who was holding a gift box. "Here's our token of appreciation." While Mr. Boonchuy takes out the gifts to the passengers, it was the same gift Anne gave to her mother, but slightly smaller with the same value. "We made many Blue Butterflies for you all to remember this express but even if some of you would take the train to Disney World again, these are not available in stores, only on the Holiday Express."
As Mr. Boonchuy gave the passengers Blue Butterflies one by one, she gave some to Sprig, Polly, and Mrs. Boonchuy to hand them out in the first class. With everyone appreciating the gesture, they were amazed that the model is just the same as Mrs. Boonchuy. When Mr. Boonchuy entered through the third class, Marco from Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil came in the first class and stopped Sprig, Polly, Mrs. Boonchuy from exiting the first class.
"Guys, Moon Girl texted me that Chip Whistler is close to the Express along with Wholesome Squad!" He called.
"What!" Polly reacted.
"Moon Girl better be prepared because-" Sprig gets cut off when a bump is heard from the top of the train.
With the TV screens turning to the POV of Moon Girl's phone, Chip Whistler's bodyguards were ganging up on Moon Girl but luckily, she transformed her hand into a boxing glove to punch one of them, but just when she reaches the third class cabin to enter, more bodyguards appear from the sky while landing right in front of her.
"Woah!" Mr. Boonchuy reacted after hearing the bumps from above. The kids reacted while the door from the back kicked right open, revealing Chip Whistler.
"Here's a Merry Christmas to you all you filthy animals." He grinned while Mr. Boonchuy backed away from him. "I eventually knew when and where this kiddy train was heading but even without the information, I would be one of the only people in this world to find this train."
When Mrs. Boonchuy and the others head inside the third class, they saw Chip taking one Blue Butterfly from a little girl while looking at it closely. "Give that butterfly back to her!" Mrs. Boonchuy called out.
"Why? People would prefer Wholesome Foods' Christmas specialty rather than tourist attractions like you." He then breaks the Blue Butterfly, causing the girl to cry.
"Oh you better not ruin our Holiday Express!" Polly reacted.
"Even if it's by stopping this train, I would still tongue you out!" Sprig unleashed his tongue but Chip dodged it, while grabbing it wearing rubber gloves. He pulled Sprig off the ground while grabbing him by his clothes. He then snapped his fingers as bodyguards appeared from the back door as he handed Sprig to the bodyguards.
"Take out another disgusting tongue and you're being thrown out." Chip said curtly, making a thinly veiled threat.
Not much later, Cricket and Tilly made their way to the third class cabin to aid the Planters and Boonchuys. "Chip, if you ruin our Holiday Express, you're gonna get a coal shaped tooth for Christmas."
"Yeah, like that's ever gonna stop me from taking over this express." He walked up to Cricket, with the Wholesome Squad still holding onto Sprig who was resisting. "You may make a fool out of me from time to time, but you're nothing like a hero. I have full power on this express and no one's gonna stop me."
Just when Chip and the Wholesome Squad headed to the first class to take over the train taking the passengers, the tv screens showed the light lasers of light blue and dark pink from the distance. But it wasn't enough. From the left a portal opened up from the outside of the express door which Dipper immediately opened. Then from above the express while Moon Girl was on the verge of defeat, she and the Wholesome Squad saw something above in the sky. Even during the night, it became visible in a matter of seconds with the dark magic appearing.
"Merry Christmas, suckers!" Luz in her Titan Witch form landed next to Moon Girl, taking the Wholesome Squad by surprise.
"Luz!" A young girl cheered from the second class.
Luz used her titan powers thanks to Stringbean to push the squad off of the express. "NOO!" Chip looking at his bodyguards falling from the express out the window. Then Star Butterfly jumped out of the portal thanks to the dimension scissors. As if it wasn't enough, the light lasers came in from the third class, revealing Anne and Sasha with their calamity powers.
Everyone cheered to see one of the best Disney Channel stars as they surrounded Chip and his goons. "You may have power, but you don't know what power is from destined heroes from Amphibia." Anne walked up to Chip.
"You may have failed to win against your enemies, but you don't stand a chance against us." Sasha added.
"Don't push it, I know who you are!" Chip retorted.
"And I know where all of this is going." Cricket smirked.
As Anne and Sasha pushed Chip and the squad, Star and Marco showed them the dimension portal. "For the record, fights on the express will kick you out to the dimension." Star crossed her arms.
"Especially hijacking trains." Marco added.
"Thanks for the tip, ship show wreckers." Chip rolled his eyes as he and his goons jumped through the portal. Dipper closed the door with the portal disappearing into nothingness, while he and Mabel turned their attention to the passengers.
"I give you." Dipper presents the heroes of the express.
"The Christmas Saviors Of Holiday Express!" Mabel shouted in excitement.
Anne and Sasha turned back into their normal selves, whilst in Santa outfits as well. Moon Girl and Luz, who also turned back into her normal self, entered inside from the third class cabin. Everyone cheered for saving the Holiday Express and the entrance they made.
"We're back from our holiday shopping rush." Sasha replied.
"When we heard that Chip Whistler was taking over this express, we had to rush by...well you know." Anne giggled and so did the passengers.
"They called us and we need to send our most twisted villains away with these." Star showing off her dimensional scissors.
"If only we had those in our show." Tilly said, being mesmerized.
Luz and Moon Girl made their way to the first class as Luz witnessed Amity. "I have my gift." She smiled.
"I don't need to guess who it is for." Amity giggled.
As Luz made her way to her girlfriend, Anne's mother and others also appeared in the first class cabin. Sprig stuck his tongue up in the ceiling, launching himself from the ground, landing in front of Anne. "Merry Christmas Boonchuy Claus!" He grinned.
"And who are you? The first ever frog elf?" Anne smiled.
"I beg to differ." Polly retorted.
"Anne, tell everyone what you and the others are gonna do, since you arrived." Mr Boonchuy replied.
"Yeah. Since we are here, I was thinking that we should sit next to the passengers and watch our favorite Christmas episodes." Anne suggested as the passengers cheered.
"I think we'll take that as a yes." Marco putting his finger in his earplug.
"Big time." Cricket added.
"Well you heard her, let the real Holiday Express begin!" Molly cheered from the front.
For the rest of the trip, stars of Disney Channel watch their Christmas episodes with the passengers they're sitting next to. The passengers didn't think it could get any better but the express itself outdid it again. They wanted this to happen for such a long time and it's only a matter of time to make updates when it comes to feedback.
The Holiday Express arrived at Disney World. The train stopped at the Orlando Amtrak Station where Dipper appeared in the first class, making one last announcement. "Passengers, we have arrived at our destination." He responded. "Thanks for taking The Disney Channel Magical Holiday Express."
The door opened as everyone got out. On their way out, The Disney Channel stars gave out high fives and hugs. With the three classes empty, the express left the train station. The Disney Channel stars go to their exclusive classes to take their break after their performances. "That was...something else." Hailey commented.
"We know how you felt after watching your Christmas episode." Sasha replied.
"I'm surprised that we were allowed to do the hijacking." Marco added. "I thought it was out of the question."
"Maybe some of the people at the company felt bad for us." Casey added.
"That's mostly putting it lightly, judging from what we've been through." Luz taking a drink from her hot cocoa.
"We're not even allowed to kiss in the express." Amity added.
"I would blame it on the company, but I wouldn't take the risk of cancellation." Star added.
"Ok, as much as we went through a lot, this is still our first time doing such an attraction." Dipper replied.
"I wasn't nervous." Cricket biting a biscuit.
"Neither was I," Tilly added.
"Yeah, I wanted to do more especially when we had three hours." Mabel smiled.
"Well the thing is, Disney wants the passengers to relax on their way to Disney World." Mrs. Boonchuy replied. "We can only perform for a small amount of time."
"You're right, but still it was fun for social interaction." Kristine said.
Everyone in the class agreed with each other from Kristine's compliment, but Anne has a confession on what she felt about the whole thing. "Even if I spend less time on this express, it still feels special."
"You can never deny that." Polly commented.
"And from what I've learned by going to Disney World before Amphibia came out, each attraction takes years to put together, and is more expensive than other kinds of attractions."
"And we're paid just enough, but not on the same levels of animated movies." Marcy commented.
"My point is if we're gonna make this work, we should change it up from time to time."
"Like me being the conductor?" Mabel wondered.
"Yes, and we can get more of our friends from our shows to show everyone we're capable of our Holiday Express."
"Including villains?" Moon Girl guessed while smiling.
"If they can allow more powerful villains than Chip Whistler." Cricket replied.
"I couldn't agree more." Molly Mcgee stood up. "When we get back to Jacksonville tomorrow, I should do a speech similar to your mother's as long as-"
"Yes you can have Oliver, but we're still unsure with the whole kissing thing." Anne replied.
"I was actually talking about my family. While having Scratch saving the express."
"That also works."
"Anyway we should relax while watching a Christmas movie." Amity said. "We'll do the plans in the morning."
"Be thankful the company allowed us to do more impromptu actor changes." Star commented. "Disney World doesn't allow that."
"Especially at DisneyLand." Hailey added.
As they turned on their TVs in their class cabins, they watched a Christmas film while the train took them back to their apartments. It was a crazy night, but a successful night to make their goal come true. They await for what the feedback is, but they're aware they didn't make a mistake. It may be the beginning of their attraction, but it'll grow to the point they might run the express outside of Christmas. The Disney Channel stars achieved their goal and now they're doing whatever it takes to give new passengers Magical Holiday Express in the future.

Experience (Dipper, Mabel, Pacifica)
Summary: Pacifica feels out of her element when she watches the twins roughhouse. Lucky for her, Dipper doesn’t mind showing her how it’s done. (Based on a prompt by the lovely @veryblushyswitch!! This could be interpreted as Dipcifica, I do hint to a bit of crushing but the fic could be read as totally platonic too. Hope you enjoy it!)
Pacifica Northwest had not had a normal childhood. Well, that was selling it quite short. She had grown up as a rich, spoiled child who was cared for by nannies rather than her own parents. All of her friends were hand-picked and approved, other children who were trained to smile and look pretty, to obey. And, as the only heir to the Northwest name, she had no siblings to play with, leaving her to use her imagination as she played with expensive, porcelain dolls.
Most of the people in Gravity Falls were terrified of her, or treated her as some sort of celebrity. They were desperate for her approval and attention, but only knew the most basic, textbook facts about her. Yes, it was a privileged and comfortable life, but it was lonely in its own special way.
It wasn’t until Pacifica met Dipper and Mabel Pines that she realized all that she had missed out on. She watched the way that the two of them interacted with one another, or with their great-uncles, or their friends, and a wave of jealousy went through her.
Although their relationship had gotten off to a rocky start, Pacifica quickly grew to view the Pines twins as the friends she had always longed to have. Their chaos, creativity, and genuine kindness were all traits that she had rarely seen in the people her family allowed her to socialize with. It was a very welcome change of pace.
Speaking of chaos, it was rare to be around Dipper and Mabel and not be drawn into the madness of their everyday life if Gravity Falls. When they weren’t getting into trouble with the various creatures around, they were causing trouble around the Mystery Shack.
Pacifica had come over to join the twins for a double-feature of two terrible films for the sole purpose of making fun of said films, and the afternoon had ended with Mabel pinning Dipper to the floor and tickling him until he swore that she could pick the movie next time. Pacifica had sat to the side, watching them with the curiosity of the sheltered child that she was.
She couldn’t even remember the last time someone had tickled her, or if she was even ticklish herself. As she watched Mabel shriek when Dipper’s hands struck a counter-attack on her sides, she couldn’t help but feel left out of the fun. Despite becoming friends, she felt that Dipper and Mabel still had an image of her in their heads, the untouchable and spoiled girl she used to be (and still slipped back into the act on occasion) and therefore, she was left out of the roughhousing. Was it strange that she wanted to experience that?
After Dipper had agreed to Mabel’s terms, he looked flustered beyond belief, and he was winded as though he’d run a marathon. Pacifica would almost dare to say he looked cute. Before she could entertain the thought further, Mabel was grabbing her hand and dragging her upstairs to read the new magazines she’d gotten, complete with boy band posters and makeup tips galore.
She was allowed to spend the night, and Dipper, likely traumatized by all the long nights with Candy and Grenda, had gone to sleep on the couch downstairs for the night.
For such an energetic girl, Mabel was quick to fall asleep, leaving Pacifica alone with her thoughts for just a few minutes, and she tentatively ran her own dainty fingers over her stomach beneath the blanket, and felt no urge to laugh or twitch away. She remembered reading somewhere that it was impossible to tickle yourself, but she figured it was worth a shot. She drifted off to the sound of Mabel’s breathing shortly after.
***
The next morning, Mabel shook her awake with unnecessary urgency, with the excuse that Stan was making pancakes for breakfast, and they needed to stack their plates before Dipper went back for a second helping.
The two girls made their way down the creaky stairs of the Mystery Shack, Mabel humming to herself the whole way. Pacifica was surprised to see how much energy she had in the mornings, but followed without comment.
As they entered the kitchen, Mabel grabbed two plates and began tossing pancakes onto them both while Pacifica took a seat next to Dipper at the table. Stan offered her a toothy grin, and Ford gave her a polite nod over his newspaper. Dipper gave her a little smile before shoveling another forkful of pancake into his mouth. Mabel held most of the conversation at the table, and once they were all finished eating, the twins got to helping their great-uncles with the dishes.
Pacifica wasn’t sure how to be helpful, having never really done her own chores before, but Dipper seemed to notice her hesitation and asked her to help him dry off the plates and hand them over to Mabel. She did so, forming a nice assembly line that got the kitchen clean quickly, letting the kids run back up to the attic to plan their activities for the day.
“Oh, I totally forgot!” Mabel suddenly exclaimed. “I’m supposed to go to Candy’s house today! She wants to show Grenda and I the stuff she made at robotics camp!”
Pacifica really didn’t want to go home yet, but she barely had time to accept that fate before Dipper spoke up.
“That’s alright Mabel, Pacifica and I won’t go on any cool adventures without you,” he promised.
Mabel grinned before running off to the bathroom to get dressed and ready for the day, leaving Pacifica sitting on her bed, feeling Dipper’s eyes on her.
“What are you smiling at?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Dipper flushed. “Oh, sorry, I just…I think this is the first time I’ve seen you without any makeup, or jewelry. You actually look like we’re the same age when you aren’t all dressed up.”
Pacifica had honestly forgotten that she had washed off her signature purple eyeshadow and removed her earrings and bracelet before bed last night, and her own cheeks went a little pink as she realized she had been seen by the whole Pines family with a messy ponytail, and wearing a pair of Mabel’s baggy sleep shorts. “Thanks, I think?” she said.
“Don’t get used to me complimenting you,” he replied, but his grin told her he was joking.
Mabel returned shortly after, telling Pacifica that she could raid her closet for whatever she wanted, before giving her a hug and leaving again, the sound of her calling goodbye to Stan and Ford echoing throughout the house.
“So,” Dipper said. “Since I promised we wouldn’t do anything exciting without Mabel, I don’t really have any good ideas for the day. I wanted to show you something cool, y’know, but I don’t want to do anything too crazy for your first time, but I still want it to—”
“It’s okay,” she assured him. “I don’t need to hunt down some weird creature to have a good time, you know. We can just…I don’t know, watch another movie?”
Dipper’s nervous expression softened at that. “Okay!”
Pacifica took Mabel’s offer to borrow some clothes, taking a pair of denim shorts and a purple sweater which boasted a puppy playing basketball on it, and took the borrowed outfit into the bathroom to change and give Dipper the privacy to do the same.
They met up back in the living room, with Dipper already flipping through a stack of DVDs.
“Now that Mabel isn’t here, I don’t have to sit through a rom-com,” he said cheerfully, but then frowned. “Unless you want to, that is. I picked yesterday, so if you have something else you’d rather watch, we totally can watch that instead.”
The mention of his promise to Mabel only reminded her of the thoughts she’d had the night before. Still, Pacifica chuckled at his rambling. “Pick whatever you want. I liked the ones we watched last night, they were cool.”
Dipper’s face lit up once again, and plucked a DVD out of the pile, popping it into the player before joining her on the couch.
Pacifica had already swallowed her pride so many times recently: Dealing with the significant drop in her family’s wealth was a good example. So, there was really no reason to hold back what she was thinking. Besides, while Mabel was probably her best friend, it felt easier to talk to Dipper, after he’d seen her vulnerable, crying in a closet at a party, or covered in dirt and grime during a battle with a triangle demon. What did she have to be nervous about?
“Sorry I didn’t like, help you when Mabel was bothering you,” she said. “I’ve never really…had a tickle fight before? So I didn’t know if I should try to intervene.”
Dipper, who was still digging for the remote amongst the couch cushions, raised an eyebrow. “It’s okay, I mean, there really is no etiquette to it…But you’ve never had a tickle fight before? Like, ever?”
She shook her head. “I don’t have siblings, and none of my friends were the touchy type.”
“But, it’s…That’s just, like, a rite of passage in life!” Dipper said. “I don’t think I’ve gone a week of my life without Mabel tickling me.”
“Well, you seem really ticklish, so I guess it’s hard to resist,” Pacifica replied, smirking.
Dipper’s cheeks went red, but he narrowed his eyes. “Well, maybe it’s time you experience it, since you want to talk all confidently.”
Pacifica didn’t say anything, just widened her eyes in anticipation as Dipper’s hands reached out and grabbed at her sides, fingers wiggling.
The surprised, genuine laughter that burst from her lips was foreign even to her; she couldn’t remember if she had ever laughed that hard. The sensation was overwhelming, and although her body was screaming for her to escape, she was…having fun.
She brought her knees up to her chest, a poor attempt at defending her torso, and Dipper just gleefully began squeezing her knees, making her squeal. It was surely the most undignified sound to ever leave her lips, and she couldn’t even be bothered to care.
Not quite knowing what she was doing, she reached her hands out and poked her fingers into Dipper’s stomach, and felt proud when he began to giggle too.
While Pacifica was clearly quite ticklish, Dipper was apparently absurdly sensitive, and so his laughter quickly overpowered hers, making her feel mischievous and proud, a grin stretching across her face.
Dipper was quickly backed into the corner of the couch, Pacifica hovering over him and using one hand to scribble at his neck while the other snuck behind his knee, making him cackle. It was actually pretty cute, but that was a thought to analyze another time.
She assumed that she had won the tickle fight, a victory on her first try, but she wasn’t expecting Dipper to suddenly regain enough strength to push her back against the cushions and launch a new attack on her tummy and sides, making her kick her legs and shriek like some creature from Ford’s journals.
“Okay, okay!” she cried. “I can’t—”
Dipper stopped immediately, letting her sit up and catch her breath, arms wrapping around her torso to try and make the phantom sensation of his fingers go away.
When she met his eye, he was smiling, his cheeks flushed and his hat crooked on his head. “So, how was that for your first tickle fight?” he asked.
She couldn’t help but smile too. “It was fun. But, I think it’ll be better next time, when I win.”
Dipper raised his eyebrows. “Oh, is that a challenge?”
“Yup. And I’m not above asking Mabel for pointers,” she replied.
“That’s so not fair!” Dipper said.
Pacifica just giggled.
It had been a weird experience; being tickled was a lot different than she had imagined it, childhood memories of it still foggy, the whole fight-or-flight aspect having slipped her expectations. But regardless, letting loose and laughing like that had been fun. Refreshing, even. It made her feel like Dipper didn’t see her as some expensive, fragile item that would shatter in his hands, and then sue him for the damages.
Before either of them found something else to say, Mabel came bounding through the front door of the house, and peered into the living room. “What did you guys do while I was gone?” she asked in her usual bubbly manner.
Dipper caught Pacifica’s eye and grinned. “Wanna see what it’s like to win 2-against-1?”
Pacifica returned his grin. “Definitely.”
The two of them chased Mabel all the way up to the attic before they caught her, but it wasn’t long before laughter filled the Mystery Shack once again.
