Tiny Tips: Studying
I saw @happyhemostudies 's list of small tips for studying and I figured I'd make a list of my own
45:15 study:break sessions. 45 minutes of studying (as long as a single class takes for me) with 15 minutes break to switch from one subject to the next and/or reset the mind, give your eyes a break and stretch/takea short walk/get a snack or drink
Small flashcards for vocabulary learning. So important and it works so well. Mine are about 3x6cm. One word per card.
Make a study-plan with every day a little bit of studying/practicing. Use your planner!
Apples are great snacks: cut up in little pieces they last a long time and the crunch stimulates enough to not get Super Bored while studying. Also: carrots, sliced/chopped cucumber, hard pears, (frozen) grapes and (frozen) berries
Read the chapter/paragraph before class
Explain a concept or chapter to your parent or sibling, or an interested friend who doesn't take the same class
Colour code your subjects with a marker and a coloured fineliner (eg: my Biology work gets green+green, Maths gets aqua+yellow, Chemistry gets green+aqua, Latin gets yellow+orange etc)
On that note: I use a marker to highlight important words in my notes and to write down the titles in my summaries, I use a fineliner to underline keywords and concepts in my summaries, to write subheadings and to correct my practice problems.
Keep separate file holders or small binders for summaries and practice problems so you don't have to carry those around as well at school
Use a blue pen for your notes and summaries!! Studies have shown that blue texts gets memorized much better than black. I prefer black pens for the AestheticTM so I use those for the exercises I do.

15 questions, 15 mutuals
FI was tagged by @almastudiess thank you so much!!
1. Are you named after anyone?
My first name comes from my dad because he has the same name as me, so everybody calls me Junior, that means that I’m Oskar, the second! And my second name was given because of this man: Dr. Serge Raynaud de la Ferriere
2. When was the last time you cried?
Actually, i don’t remember. Maybe two week or a month ago?
3. Do you have kids?
No, and I don’t think I’ll have! First of all, I’m a man who likes man so adoption will be a long process and I don’t think I’d be a good parent. I don’t know, maybe I’m just think this now, who knows what would happen in the future. What’s for sure is that I’ll adopt dogs, cats and turtles!
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Nope, I don’t even know how to use it. I’m a very quiet person.
5. What’s your eye color?
Dark brown
6. Scary movie or happy ending?
I promise that if you make me watch a scary movie we’ll no longer be friends.
7. Any special talents?
Listening! I’m a very good listener. I know that is not consider a talent but for me anything that a person is good at is talent.
8. Where were you born?
Zacamil Hospital, San Salvador, El Salvador
9. What are your hobbies?
Listening to BTS, I like to read, I like to journal, play games with my little brother and meme-binge/crack-binge
10. Do you have any pets?
I have two dogs. My rottweiler named Shadow (how creative, I know) and my pitbull-german shepherd named Shenzie (as in one of the hyena from Lion King). I have one red-eared slider turtle named turtle lmao. I used to had cats as well :(
11. What sports do you play/have you played?
I used to practiced taekwondo years ago
12. How tall are you?
5′4 I think, which is like 1.67 or something like that.
13. Favorite subject in school?
It was either math (I’m not good at it but my teacher was a very inspiring person and his classes were cool) or Social Studies just because the teacher was hot and his classes were very chill and since he was young he made the classes dynamic and talkative
14. Dream job?
A dreamy dream job is to be an actor but I don’t think I’m good at that haha but working in a advertising agency would be amazing!!
15. Why aren’t there 15 real questions?
Life is too complicated for that

a list of small study tips
these are small things you can add to your day to be 10% more productive with the estimated time it'll take! these are things i do (or try to do) most days. they're small enough to feel manageable, and i for sure don't use all of them but i find that when i use at least 2-3 in a day i feel a lot better about the material.
retype notes in google docs (10-15 min/1 hour lecture)
Utilize pomodoro technique for at least one subject (25 min work/5 min break. total 30 min)
Look over notes before class (5 min)
Look over notes after class (5 min)
Make notecard summary after class (i find this one especially useful for calculus!) (10 min/notecard)
Explain short concept to a friend (10 min max)
write down to-do list of tasks (5 min)
Go over concepts in your head on your walk to class (absolute FAVORITE because of my daily calculus quizzes within the first 10 minutes of class) (as long as your walk is!)
i hope these are helpful, i need to learn more small tips myself too 😊

How To: Utilize Whiteboards
So I'm a super visual learner. I love a good diagram, pretty notes, etc. But, I'm not great at utilizing this within my classes.
I'm currently taking a biology class that's mainly about systems but is kinda all over the place if I'm being honest. No one really likes that class because it's just a bunch of graphs and diagrams you have to decipher and determine what's going on within them.
I'm struggling with it a bit but today I figured out what works for me to understand certain concepts and thought I'd share them with you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are my pointers for using whiteboards (either at home or at the library) to study.
Draw a system out once with a reference.
For me, this was my professor's videos, where he also draws it out and comments about the various parts. From this, I took out what I considered important and redrew it in a way that made a bit more sense to me.
Always include a title & labels.
I'm aware this sounds silly but you'd be surprised how many times I'm studying with others in the library and we don't label and graph while doing homework and we're like "what was that graph referring to?" The title especially can help you with that next step which is...
Make sure you draw it in a way that can be transferred over to your notes easiest.
It's all good and well to draw out something wonderful on a whiteboard but copying it down is sometimes the worst! You might not have enough space or colors or paper. Plan ahead for that if you can.
Utilize colors if you can memorize what color corresponds to what. If you can't, don't overdo the colors!
Colors can just be hit or miss if I'm being honest. My general rule of thumb is one colored pen & one colored highlighter (usually of the same color) within my notes. With whiteboards you can be more adventurous, but make sure you're able to transfer to your notes with the colors you choose or else you might be left wondering why you remembered that K+ is orange but you drew it in blue.
Draw the system out twice without references.
Two words. Muscle. Memory! This will help you solidify it and make sure you can replicate it from memory on an exam. I would also definitely plan to draw it out before your test if you can.
Take (and save) a picture!
There's two really good reasons for this. One is so that you can post it to your studyblr, obviously. Second is so you can reference it later on if you get stuck redrawing it!!
Hope this helps you to draw out complex systems on whiteboards from now on! Happy studying!

super quick helpful study tip !
when reading over notes and trying to understand something, use the phrase "and that should make sense because ... " and then provide reasoning as to why that is the way it is !
our ochem professor has been focusing a lot on making us not memorize but rather understand why things happen to be a certain way, and this is how I've been reviewing to make sure I understand these things!
ex: the more s character in an orbital, the stronger and shorter the bond is. this should make sense because s orbitals are closer to the nucleus and more electron-dense bc they do not have nodes like a hybridized orbital does

2020 Quarantine Challenge
I definitely missed quite a few days but am super excited to get involved in this challenge! Definitely recommend if you’re needing something to keep yourself occupied. :) (Also we should definitely make some studyblr group chats on groupme!)
Friday, March 27th (today): What is your favorite subject/topic to study at the moment?
My spring term doesn’t start until Monday but my favorite subject last term was Global Health (especially with everything going on right now those last few weeks were insanely insightful!). The subject I’m looking forward to the most this term is Organic Chemistry III as it’s organic chemistry as it relates to biological processes!
Older days I missed :(
Monday: Have you made a study schedule to help you study at home?
Yes! I use Google Calendar like I usually do during term, and I’ve made a few adjustments for online studying I hope to share with y’all soon!
Tuesday: How are you being taught your lessons?
We always use Canvas and some of lectures will be taught using Zoom.
Wednesday: What’s your favorite study snack?
Oooh I really love cheese so that’s up there on my list, also love gummy bears haha
Thursday: How are you keeping active?
I usually powerlift at my university’s gym but currently can’t so I’m doing home workouts (not enjoying them too much hehe but hopefully they get cooler soon).
Hope everyone is doing well and I hope to see everyone’s answers to this challenge!!

July 28th and July 29th - How do you stay motivated to study during the summer? Have you done or are you planning to do any activities (such as work experience, summer schools, or watching lectures) other than normal work during the summer?
Last summer when I took classes, I stayed motivated by setting specific work times (usually in the mornings) and then rewarding myself with Youtube and Netflix, visiting friends or my bf at the time, etc afterwards! This summer has been more difficult, but I’ve been watching a lot of study with me’s and med student videos to keep myself excited about learning.
So besides physics, I’m working with our coronavirus team at our university to perform contact tracing towards the end of summer and early Fall. I also just got the opportunity to help with some COVID-19 research, but my boss still hasn’t sent me a reply email even though one of the meetings was supposed to be today. :( Besides that, just summer classes and staying home!

July 22nd - What is your dream vacation?
I think my dream vacation would be just choosing a country and exploring as much of it as I could in a summer. Not a huge itinerary or plan involved, because sometimes you want to stay somewhere longer than you planned you know?
