Another argument I often see is that Feyre and Nesta were able to fall in love without the bond driving their decision which is why Elucien's bond will be rejected, because Elain can't fall in love naturally with Lucien.
(sort of a continuation of my last post)
Feyre:
Tumblr media
Can anyone explain why Feyre would have had any reason to want Rhys, even UTM?
We remember UTM, right? All the things Rhysand did to Feyre long before she ever realized it was all part of the mask he was wearing?
To Feyre, it wasn't Rhys pretending to be the bad guy. UTM, he was the bad guy.
She didn't begin to realize who he actually was until many months later.
Yet she wanted him even then. Because of the mating bond. No, she didn't feel it snap but she even says "her heart knew he was hers long before she did."
That's because they were mates even then and that is why she wanted him. Not because she chose him for how super sweet and loving he was UTM but because they were mates.
She fell for the person eventually but the bond is always what drew her to him in the first place.
Nesta:
Tumblr media
Can anyone explain why Nesta would have wanted Cassian from the moment she met him?
He was the species she grew up fearing, right? She didn't even want Feyre in her house after being turned fae yet somehow she desperately wanted a stranger?
Was that because she had spent so much time with Cassian and realized what a good and decent male he was? Or was it because the bond drew her to him in a way that terrified her?
Same as Feyre, she didn't know a mating bond existed between them but she knew something was there.
She didn't choose Cassian because they were such good friends. She wasn't terrified at first because she loved him after the ways he made her laugh or the thoughtful gifts he gave. She was overwhelmed and drawn to him because of the bond.
Neither Archeron actually chose their mates.
Sure they eventually got to know them and fell in love but they wanted Rhys and Cassian even when they didn't want to want them, when they had absolutely no reason to want them. When they would have probably chosen anyone but them.
The bond took away their choice just as much as e/riels claim it takes away Elain's.
At least she's going into things with eyes wide open rather than wondering why she's drawn to someone she considered an "enemy" the way Feyre and Nesta did.
Fated Mates romance is not a "I choose my own destiny" trope. It's a "Jesus Take the Wheel" kind of trope meaning that eventually the characters (despite some initially fighting fate) realize that maybe there is some all powerful entity that might know better.
Clearly that entity knew what was best for Feyre and Nesta.
If that's somehow offensive to someone's feminist ideals then, while I respect their opinion, SJM is clearly not the author for you.
Because Nesta and Feyre did not choose for themselves. They merely eventually came around to the path that fate always intended for them.

Just saw this.....
Tumblr media
Before i say anything let me say i truly want everybody to pay attention to this post and the information inside especially if you agree with the post above.
How little do you know about Elain Archeron?
Let me tell you she has done these things but this person stretched out everything making Elain seem as a person she is not. You seriously think Elain would like anybody who talks about her like this? You think she would be flattered? These are all the people who claim they are Elain stans and change her character left and right.
What's true about what this person said is that she drinks whisky, stabbed the king of hybern, gives airplane gifts, found the suriel, and said ´´I hope they all burn in hell´´. Everything else is false and so disrespectful to her character.
Firstly Elain is seen to be a kind soul who owns up to her mistakes and is thankful for anybody ´s kindness and will remember it forever. That being said, Rhysand was seen once flying Elain to and from The house of wind so she can see her sister. She loves her sister and wants to see her and Rhys is taking her. Do you think she would like that her ´´stans´´ are saying he is her ´´little flying lackey´´ No. She would find you an unpleasant person who lacks respect.
´´Made a 500 year old obsession without even trying´´ You are right. Elain did nothing to have that. It is just because her sisters got with Azriels brothers and the dear shadowsinger formed an idea that Elain is rightfully supposed to be his because you know what, her sisters are with his brothers and that is enough logic. If its an obsession of any sorts, it is an unhealthy one.
Just some reasons:
He feels unworthy to taint her with his presence and hides a part of him (shadows) and hates another (hands) in regards to Elain.
For two years straight all he did was Pump himself and he said himself that he certainly had not gone far with his planning other than his fantasies.
He loved Mor for centuries and after the almost kiss with Elain, he refuses to disclose his feelings for mor. Even in ACOSF it represents he still feels for her.
He says its best to Kill greyson (Elain´s ex lover) even though Elain forbid feyre and others from doing anything to him.
He gets angry at the thought of Elain doing at least something and underestimates her -which is the only canon proof of what he could be thinking so don´t even try. Elain even calls out Nesta who had the same reaction and same reasoning. We have both Nesta and Feyre calling out how they do not like territorial traits from a man.
❗❗❗❗HOSAB SPOILERS❗❗❗❗
He gives credit to Nesta for beheading the king ´´Herself´´ which is a direct parallel to Lucien crediting Elain for her bravery. Before you guys yap about how its factually correct on what he said, do you realise how easy it could have been for sarah to say something like
Azriel said,´´Her sister stabbed the king of hybern,´´ A look towards truthteller and back at bryce and she could have sworn pride swarmed his eyes ´´Nesta beheaded the king of hybern herself´´
Dont bully me i have no idea how to write books but SJM could have put something even more tone down and it would still be an nice Elnotreal moment. Instead she made a direct parallel with what Lucien once said in ACOWAR.
∴ His ´´obsession´´ is super unhealthy.
Anyways whats next?
´´Had the shadowsinger running around´´ I mean go ahead make Elain seem like fricking b**tch. She is so sweet and kind and for some reason you want to take that away to make her seem strong? You have to put down multiple characters to uplift Elain? YOU have to. Not Elain. I can see from people who agree with the statement above (the picture) are simply blind to what Elain offers. There is a strength in her kindness, generosity, manner and feminism. When i see how kind Elain is, i see her strength. I see HER power. She respects all those around her and if i stan her why would i change that narrative?
That being said, Elain would continue to thank everybody who shows her kindness and if you think not than do not even bother saying you are pro Elain.
Same thing with saying she forbid everyone from eating. Elnotreals are seriously taking the forbidden love idea too far. All jokes aside she literally canonically said that they should not wait for her and go ahead and eat. Even if she did say that, no offense to my girl but they would all laugh their a$$ off and continue to eat.
Although Elain distances herself from Lucien, based on her character she would be offended if someone said she does not gaf.
Even this creator would. Imagine i made a anti Elain post saying something along the lines of
´´I hate Elain because she practically does not gaf about the mating bond with lucien and she sucks because of it´´
In this circumstance, you guys would pounce right away and start listing off the reason on why it isn´t the fact she does not gaf its because of _______ etc.
Although you are using it to make her seems as though she is a Girlboss for it? I´m not blaming her because i literally 100% believe it is not the fact she does not care, it's deeper.
´´uglified herself´´ There you go again, disrespecting Elains family, friends. First of all, no one needed Elain to be there, they needed Nesta. They did not choose Elain. They chose Nesta because of her dancing so she could seduce Eris. It was Elains choice to come although no one needed her. Mor always prefers to wear red and she did wear it the court of nightmares. Elain chose to wear black to match as the High Ladys sister in order to match. She herself looks prefers lilaks, blues, pinks but probably told herself she needed to be someone else to fit in. Something Cass and Rhysand has noted. Why are you calling her ugly when her current state is ´´Life being sucked from her´´
You just love disrespecting my girl acting like its a praise. tsk, tsk
Why am i making this post? What if its just a joke?
Its not just that. Many people use this information to uplift Elain while they casually ignore her own choices and personality. So what if this is a joke? On the bottom it says
´´You sure she is not developed enough?´´
Meaning what she wrote is development for Elain. No its not. Its erasing her character and morphing a new one in her place. I could go on and on of other reasons as to why Elain is developed and it is none of those reasons. Most of her development would happen in her own book and from her own pov instead of other characters just like Nesta.
Anyways my hole point is that you dont have to make Elain seem like she runs the ic, or she dominates everybody, or is a mastermind.
Let me get this straight
Feyre is a highlady: STRONG
Nesta is a warrior: STRONG
Elain is a gardener: STRONG
In my opinion it could be stronger. Maybe because im just like her haha but in a world of warrior women or tongue lasher women, she remain her perfect self, Elain Archeron and she would let no man or no ´´stan´´ change that.

It had been almost a year since Night Court had seen Y/N or Eris.
After the war it seemed like the couple just disappeared.
At first, no one thought anything of it that no one had heard from them considering every court had focused on their own court’s rebuilding after the war and the Night Court made sure to stamp out the rest of the rebellion. However, it seemed that once the dust had settled and people were returning to normal lives, Y/N and Eris were still nowhere to be heard of which concerned the inner court that Y/N and Eris were MIA.
There were no mentions of them in any Autumn Court communications and Azriel’s network of spies were silent that front.
It wasn’t given much attention until Beron had brought another one of his son’s to a meeting, rather than Eris. Everyone knew Beron barely trusted Eris, but Eris was the one he trusted the most. For Eris to not be accompanying Beron to meetings meant either that Eris was doing something more important, or something had happened to Eris?
“We can’t just barge into Autumn Court demanding something without proof. Beron said that Eris is busy with other matters” Rhysand said, although he wasn’t believing the words Beron said either, especially with the facial expression he had made.
It was dinner with the Inner Court, and after a meeting with some of the other court High Lords, everyone was suspicious. Eris not taking Beron’s side was not something that happened, and after not hearing from the couple in so long, everyone was getting concerned.
“You’re not serious? Azriel says his spies haven’t seen or heard from them since the war. Nothing!” Cassian said, angrily.
“What if they’re in trouble? Beron wouldn’t say anything and risk his court’s appearance” Feyre said logically, looking directly at her mate with worry evident in her eyes. Rhys sighed, looking to Azriel.
“Nothing?” Rhysand asked, confirming.
“They’ve been missing from Autumn celebrations, no appearances at Autumn markets. There’s been no activity outside of Eris’ house. No one in Autumn has seen the couple since the war” Azriel confirmed, which made everyone’s stomach drop.
The sisters all looked to each other, then Feyre and Rhysand stared at one another.
“We can’t all storm in to see them. It’ll cause suspicion that we’ve been spying on them” Rhysand said.
“Then why don’t we go. Just the two of us - we’ll say we hadn’t given the couple a wedding gift” Feyre said.
“If Beron asks why it wasn’t sent earlier?” Rhysand asked, thinking this all through.
“Does she even know our father died?” Nesta asked, bringing up another topic that made everything more suspicious.
“If she knew, she would’ve reached out” Feyre said.
“Or she’s not able to” Cassian said, suspiciously.
“Okay, a wedding gift is respectful enough to not raise concerns about our spying. We could say we thought Eris would be at the meeting and was going to bring it then. Alright, we’ll go to Autumn then tomorrow” Rhysand said.
“Do you really think something has happened to them? Would Beron…?” Feyre whispered, pulling Rhysand into another room to discuss.
“No. Beron isn’t that stupid to try something. I don’t know, but the tattoo is there so it hasn’t been broken” Rhysand said, frustrated without more knowledge but brought Feyre into his arms to comfort her. “She’ll be okay. Y/N will be okay”
“Azriel, stop pacing or else you’ll make a hole in the floor” Mor commented, watching him walk back and forth. He stopped, looking to her with swirls of darkness in his eyes, as he also took in the concerned looks of Cassian, Nesta, Amren, Varian, Elain and Lucien. “We’re all worried about her too”
“What if Beron found out about her powers? What if she’s getting tortured? Eris is good at lying and playing a part” Azriel said, thinking of all the horrible scenarios Y/N could be in.
“It would be too obvious for them to just disappear like this. Beron’s smarter than that” Varian chimed in, from where he was sitting.
“We will find out tomorrow when Feyre and Rhys go and see” Cassian added, seeing the anxiety creep up in his mate Nesta, as he wrapped an arm around her.
Azriel clenched his fists, remembering the moments of Y/N and him alone each night, cuddled together. Remembered her bright smile, always warming him up.
———
Eris never let you out of his sight after you told him you were pregnant - which was both sweet and annoying. You didn’t hate all of the attention, but there were so many changes that happened so quickly in the time, you were beyond emotional. Everything had changed so quickly from when you found out you and Eris were mates, to getting married, to the war, and then pregnancy - you felt that things were finally settling, despite the rollercoaster of pregnancy you were dealing with.
Eris had announced the pregnancy to the family that night at dinner, although that is where the spread of news ended.
“No one - and I repeat, no one - besides this family will know for the time being. We have just finished a war, and I will not be having Y/N and my heir in any dangerous situations for now” Eris all but snarled at his brothers, before looking to his parents. Everyone looked shocked - well besides Serah, staring at you, as you rested a hand gently on Eris’, calming him as best as he could. There didn’t need to be added family drama after a war. This was supposed to be good news.
“Congratulations! This is blessed news! Eris, you should be thrilled Y/N so quickly. Your mate has a very healthy womb. This is great news for Autumn Court. Of course, with how unstable everything currently is, we will wait to announce. There is no need to have Y/N and my grand-heirs in danger” Beron said, focusing on you and smiling, full set of teeth on display. You shifted a bit uncomfortably under his strong gaze, as well as hearing his comments, lowering yours to your belly. His smile was looking more sinister with each minute. Eris squeezed your hand, feeling your discomfort through the bond as he rubbed it gently.
“Thank you” Eris nodded, looking to some of the more gossipy of his brothers, staring them down with a fiery stare.
“You two will move into the castle. The south wing has everything that you will need and I’ll get additional guards to station” Beron demanded, before looking at his other sons. “You all will keep your mouths shut, or you will all get 200 lashes any of you repeat anything. Y/N will be under all of your protection as well. If she needs anything - you boys will get it for her. Damian, you will be taking over Eris’ physical position when we have intercourt relations. Eris, you’ll do your position from here, but you will not need to leave Y/N. Y/N and this baby is our top priority. I don’t think I need to tell you how rare children are, and how blessed our family is. Eris, you did not disappoint on your duties as my heir” Beron stated, the closest thing to a compliment Eris would receive.
That was eight months ago and still no one outside of the Vanserra family, guards and doctors knew. Beron had moved you and Eris into the castle, giving extra protection of guards wherever you went. This was the future of Autumn Court. Babies were rare, and Beron made sure that you were always protected. The hounds, who typically lived with Eris at his house, were also now living at the castle, as they would bark incessantly when away from you.
It surprised the whole family how involved Beron had become with the pregnancy. He would linger around, making notes of things that could help with your symptoms, and seemed almost happy talking about the new generation of Vanserras. It was undoubtedly creepy when he’d touch your belly, stare at your body unabashedly, and ask about intimate details about you. No one knew what to say or do but everyone was uncomfortable.
Serah had explained during her years of being pregnant, it was the best time of their marriage. Beron was fixated on her belly, and she reasoned that it was just a pregnancy thing for him. Beron would be a grandfather, a very rare title now with the wars and scarcity of children being born.
Despite being moved into the castle and having guards surround the two of you all the time, Eris was plagued with nightmares: images of you losing dying and being bled out, someone kidnapping you, kidnapping the babies, torturing you. You would wake up to his trembling and sweats, and you’d wake him up to get him out o this head. You’d do your best to get him to sleep peacefully, or stay up as long as you could to talk him through it, which would end up with more guards or further plans to add protection to your house.
In general, the pregnancy was not a breeze so far, with the nausea, drowsiness, swelling, heightened emotions and the cravings. You weren’t put on bedrest yet, but you knew it’d be coming soon, considering your size and how terrible some days felt. You craved typically fall and autumn foods, no surprise to anyone.
“This baby is definitely Autumn Court” One of Eris’s brothers joked at family dinner, when the chef arrived with a special plate for you - macaroni and cheese with red pepper flakes and hot sauce coating the top, alongside apple slices with cinnamon.
You blushed, looking at your food a tad embarrassed, before Eris reached a hand over to your knee, caressing it lightly. You were still getting used to the dynamic of the Vanserra family, but overall, everyone seemed to welcome you as Eris’ mate and wife.
“Any normal person, all that spice would burn your mouth” Another commented, the usual stiff air of family dinner disappearing when everyone chuckled.
“It’s exactly what I ate when I was pregnant with all of you. The chef knows the recipe very well by now” Sarah commented, smiling at her children.
“I remember you loved all those covered apples from the market” Beron commented, looking to his wife, remembering the fond memories. Serah smiled softly - when she was pregnant, those were days he never abused her. Showering her with gifts and her cravings, it was some of the happiest moments of their relationship.
“Oh those sound good” Y/N said, looking at Eris with wide doe eyes.
“I’ll get them for you” Eris said, nodding as he smiled at her.
“They have them dipped in caramel, chocolate, cinnamon and some other toppings as well, I believe. Your mother loved the caramel and cinnamon ones” Beron added, and Eris nodded.
It was surprising how well Beron and Eris were acting, but Beron was thrilled about Y/N’s pregnancy, and no one was going to start questioning now.
“I want to tell my sisters before everyone else finds out” You stated, crossing your arms as you looked at Eris. Your belly was so large that you could rest your arms on your belly.
“I don’t want you traveling to the night court, especially not in your condition” Eris replied back, trying not to argue but he was overly protective of you. You hadn’t been able to leave the castle or your home since you found out, and besides feeling stifled, you missed your sisters. You understood Eris’ dilemma but you weren’t budging. You had been surrounded by only Eris and his family for months, and you wanted your sisters.
“Eris, I don’t care how but I’m seeing my sisters. What if they came here?” You asked. Sighing, Eris ran a hand through his hair, thinking of the possibilities.
“We’d have to get it approved by my father” He said.
“Then I’ll ask him tonight at dinner” You replied.
“And then there’s Rhysand. Do you really think he’ll let his High Lady come here?” Eris asked.
“Eris, I swear to god I will walk there myself if I have to” You said stubbornly. Eris looked at you,  sighing, as he closed his eyes to think of the possibilities. “I haven’t seen my family since before the war. You know what? I’m sure Azriel or Cassian or Rhys would love to fly me there” You said, knowing how much that would push him over the edge.
“You’re not going! We’ll ask Beron tonight” Eris said, sighing, pulling you in close to him. You tilted you head up to gaze at your husband.
Some days, you could just stare at Eris, in surprise of how you got here and how you managed to get such a wonderful husband, You knew no one really knew the real Eris like you did, but you couldn’t help but love him more.
“I love you” You said softly, as you watched his face soften and glow.
“I love you too, little flame” He said, cusping your face in his hand to give you a knee-weakening kiss. You all but melted into his arms.
Suddenly, there was a knock on your door. Eris sighed, reluctantly leaving you to open the door. Surprised, you saw one of Beron’s personal guards, Stanton, at the door, coming in looking a bit shocked.
“The High Lord and High Lady of Night Court are here to see you both” He said, and Eris turned to you, surprise evident on his face.
“To see us? Eris did you-?” You asked, confused.
“No. Tell them we’ll be there in shortly” Eris said.
“Your High Lord wants me to escort you back. I’ll be waiting outside” Stanton stated, and you raised an eyebrow but Eris nodded. Stanton closed the door behind him when he stepped back outside. What Beron wanted, Beron would get.
“They’re here?” You asked surprised, although you couldn’t help but hide the excitement of seeing your sister again.
———-
What is taking them so long? Feyre thought to Rhys, as they waited for Eris and Y/N to appear. It seemed that Autumn had expected it to take a few minutes, so they were all currently sitting in one of the formal living rooms instead of the normal throne room. There were a few plush couches, and Rhys was surprised to be in that room, as he had never entered it before on his dealings with Autumn Court.
I don’t know, but Beron’s acting very different… Rhys replied honestly, as Beron waited with them, watching them with fixed eyes as he seemed to study them harsher than normal. If Rhysand wasn’t as powerful as he was, he’d be definitely threatened with how hostile Beron currently was.
Suddenly, they could hear commotion outside of the room, the guards moving to the door, as everyone stood up in anticipation. Rhys noted that it was surprising they were using the doors instead of winnowing.
“My apologies on your wait, High Lord and High Lady. It takes a lot more time to do normal tasks as of late” you said, with a glowing smile as Rhysand and Feyre stared at you in shock, as you walked to them, with Eris directly at your side. Feyre’s face erupted into a wide smile, once the shock ran off.
“Oh sister! Congratulations!” She said, opening her arms to bring you into a tight hug, before both Beron and Eris stepped in front of you.
You tried not be upset as, you put a hand on Eris’ arm, and looked to Beron, who glanced down at you.
“It’s alright, we understand. Males are very protective of their offspring and lineage” Rhysand said, giving both males quizzical looks, before sitting on the couch with Feyre. You and Eris sat on another couch, while Eris gave his father a look.
“I believe Damian had mentioned there were some heated arguments that could only be settled with the High Lord, father” Eris said, and Beron looked at you, the Night Court guests, and then back to Eris.
“Your brother can’t do anything right. You look beautiful as always, Y/N” Beron said, surprising the Night Court by rubbing your belly softly before winnowing away. Eris wrapped his arm around you belly, a physical layer of protection that he had been doing now out of habit. Rhysand and Feyre looked at you and Eris expectantly, confused by everything.
“My apologies on the wait, truly. You look stunning Feyre, and Rhysand, ever so handsome” You said, with a wide smile. Eris stiffened a bit, but he knew deep down he didn’t have anything to be jealous of.
“No, you look beautiful. Seriously, you look glowing! Congratulations sister” Feyre said.
“You look beautiful, Y/N. Congratulations, both of you. How far along are you?” Rhysand asked, looking to Eris.
Your belly was the largest pregnancy belly he had ever seen, and you looked ready to pop, but that would have put the conception before the wedding.
“She’s eight months. Got pregnant right after the wedding” Eris said, with a smirk as he looked at you. You blushed, remembering those days before shaking your head at him.
“How’s it been? I’ve missed you so much” Feyre said, and you reached out a hand to hers, holding it tightly.
“It’s been… fine” You said, as Eris snorted, shaking his head.
“Don’t lie to them, little flame” Eris teased, before looking at the others. “It’s been a rough pregnancy. She’s carrying twins”
Rhysand’s jaw dropped, as he looked to Y/N’s belly in awe, and Feyre looked at him confused.
“Are twins not common?” Feyre asked.
“I have never met a faerie set of twins or know of any. You two have certainly been blessed” Rhysand said. “My healer Madja is available for you if necessary, and if you need additional protection, Night Court is here for you. The babies will be family, after all”
You smiled, then winced as you felt them move within you. Eris looked at you concerned, as well as Rhys and Feyre.
“They’re active ones. Here,” You said reaching for both of their hands, as Eris stiffened, doing his best to calm his protective nature. You looked at Eris, with a raised eyebrow daring him to do something. “They’re fine, Eris. This is their aunt and uncle. They will not hurt me or them” You said, and Eris sighed, with a nod, before you placed a hand of Feyre’s and Rhysand’s on your belly where the babies were kicking.
“Oh my gosh” Feyre commented, feeling the kick. Tears were lining your eyes, as well as hers. “You’re having a baby, babies” Feyre corrected, as more tears poured from your eyes.
“Tissues!” Eris shouted to a guard, who immediately handed you some to wipe your eyes.
“Sorry, double the babies, double the heightened emotions” You said, with a chuckle, as everyone looked at you.
“We brought you a wedding gift, but we were worried since no one has heard from you” Rhysand explained, and Eris nodded.
“We’ve been keeping this a secret. Beron moved us into the castle for extra protection, even before we knew about the twins, and no one else outside the family knows. Now, I’m surprised Beron let you to see us, but no one  can know” Eris said, with a glare that could kill. You put your hand on Eris’ arm, to calm him down, brushing warmly on your bond.
“I want my family to know. It is unreasonable to ask them to keep it to themselves and not tell my sisters that I am pregnant. That they will be aunts. I’ll accept bed rest if we have a dinner to tell them?” You bargained with Eris, knowing how desperately he wished you wouldn’t move around anymore. Eris sighed, looking to you.
“You know it’s really not up to me” He said, and you smiled a half smile.
“I’ll ask him” You said, rubbing Eris’ hand. “I’ll ask and hopefully we’ll have dinner tomorrow or the next day. Oh! The dresses! I almost forgot” You said, excitedly, looking to Feyre. “I can’t go outside, so I’ve made a few dresses for you, our sisters, Mor, Amren and Madja. Please take them” You said as you motioned to a staff member to get the dresses.
“Oh you didn’t have to” Feyre exclaimed, when he came back with a large box filled with dresses.
“It was a nice distraction from feeling like a whale” You said, with a smile, as Feyre peaked in the box, seeing the dark fabrics and sparkle.
“I thought I was a distraction” Eris teased, unable to keep his thoughts in around you. You chuckled, leaning over and giving him a kiss.
“You are the best distraction, but you are not available all day, my love” You said, before turning back to your sister and her mate.
“That is very kind of you. I will happily pay for these” Rhysand said to Eris, seeing how happy his wife and her sister were.
“No need, Rhysand” Eris said. “It makes her happy” He added, looking at you.
“This is a very different Eris. One I’m happy to know” Rhysand said.
“It’s Y/N, she makes me… she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me” Eris said honestly, the love evident through his eyes.
“There’s no one I would’ve asked to be the father of my children, my love” Y/N said, tearing up again.
“I swear, your hormones are going to kill me” Eris teased again, not wanting to cry in front of Rhysand - despite being his mate’s brother-in-law.
“How is everyone?” Y/N asked, switching topics.
“Everyone’s recovering. Nesta and Cassian are mates - they bonded after Nesta recovered from her difficulty processing our father’s death in the war” Feyre explained, watching Y/N’s face as it turned to shock.
“Father… father’s dead? In our war?” She asked confused. Eris raised an eyebrow at Rhysand, not remembering.
“Yes, father came in with his ships as help… Rhys, could you show her?” Feyre asked, before Eris got concerned.
“Do we - Do you want to see it? Do you want to see what Hybern did?” Eris asked, holding Y/N’s hands and looking at her.
“I… no. I don’t. He’s dead. He came and helped in the war, and now he’s dead” Y/N stated, coldly. “Nesta struggled?” You asked, trying to not break out into more tears.
“Yes, but now she’s training” Rhysand said, delicately.
“Cassian’s always had a thing for her, yea? Two hot heads” You said, shaking your head, as you wiped off tears. “How’s Elain? Is she feeling better?” You asked.
“She’s much better. Lucien’s been helping” Feyre said, with a quick glance to Eris at the mention of his brother.

“Azriel may be boring as shit but at least he never went after someone who was actively treating Feyre like shit. At least the Archeron he’s going after is actually working to fix her relationship with Feyre. Cassian went for someone who was still treating his friend like dog shit and I just can’t respect that.” ALL OF THIS
i’m always hesitant to say this bc some ppl are super sensitive when it comes to cassian for some funny reason (all the other boys are able to be criticized but not him bc he can be funny?) but part of why i don’t like him as much as azriel is because of how he went for nesta too early on, it was super premature for him to come onto her so blatantly in front of everyone even when she was mortal and he’d literally just met her, knowing how feyre was treated etc…i adore cassian when i don’t look at his character too closely. as much as i prefer feyssian over feyzriel because of her and cassian having more sweet bestie moments than her and az do, whenever there’s a discussion i’ll always choose az first because of cassian and nesta. like anon said i can’t help but put myself in feyre’s shoes when i’m reading but i don’t like that he came onto nesta the way he did and how soon he did, and he had no shame about it in front of feyre and the rest.
i know some people are super chill or they have sisters or family members that cross these lines all the time, like your friend flirting with your sister, but in my family or friend groups we don’t do that especially if a sister is really mean to me, why would i approve of my friend going for her so blatantly in front of me? it’s not so much a harsh or possessive petty thing but just basic morale? cassian imo doesn’t get enough flack for how he came onto nesta so soon. it’s true too that at least az didn’t show any signs of having a crush until acowar and acofas, i prefer someone humbly and respectfully handling a crush on my sister than how in your face cassian was about it with nesta in only book two. idk sometimes it feels like his dick thinks for him and even acosf proved that.
i prefer acowar cassian! but i also skip the pages whenever he’s acting out over nesta or they’re both being angst ridden for one another, i just can’t take it seriously bc he was obv thinking with his dick or mating bond and she was still treating everyone like they were less than her despite her being a pos who has never done anything.
idk 😮‍💨 like i said it’s so easy to love cass as a character when you don’t look at his dynamic with nesta from feyre’s shoes in book two. i imagine mainly feyre stan’s struggle with him due to his attachment to nesta so early on. that bonus chapter anon mentioned where cassian put his body up against nesta’s asking whether she was a virgin or not? he’d only recently met her and was doing that, it being too soon aside, it was very inappropriate to do. even mor made it clear that he acts that way with women when they don’t want him and see’s it as “a challenge” just 10 reasons why az and rhysand will always come off as the most mature to me.
the other reasons i don’t favor him have to do with sjm having him refer to nesta as a queen in acosf, him always showing doubt with the ic’s decisions in acosf as if he’s not apart of the ic (why did he seem so against them in acosf at times? most of the time they were right too so it was just weird for sjm to do) saying nesta didn’t need to apologize to anyone supposedly (really sjm? 💀) having sex with nesta on a hike where she was supposed to own up to her wrongs and mature after she just told feyre she could die (inappropriate timing much..?) acting funny when rhysand felt the need to tell her to be nice to gwyn and emerie when he knows damn well rhysand isn’t at the house of wind like them to know nesta’s behavior had gotten better. how the hell would rhysand know that nesta’s not being mean to him when rhysand’s only ever seen her be rude af to everyone..? and then made it even worse when he petulantly wrapped his arm around nesta to make rhysand feel uncomfortable.

Hello, this is going to be long, but I really need to ask. Why do you claim to like and support Vassien, even reblog Vassien posts and fanart, but then reblog Elriel posts that speak bad about Lucien?? Is not even critizing the character, is calling him a shitshow and even worse. As a Vassien shipper I don't like this. I follow you for your Elriel and Elain content but I can't understand why you do this. Many Elriels say they like Vassien but I've seen them writing about how much they dislike and even hate Lucien, even in the Lucien tag. I like both Elriel and Vassien and I don't get why you would spend so much time in a character you loathe. Some even called him an abuser and days later reblogged a post about how Vassa and Lucien are going to be endgame. If they think he's an abuser, why do they ship him with Vassa? Some even participated in Vassien week, which happened recently. This annoys me because I think it's very hypocritical. The Vassien community is small and some of us are usually into other ships too. We try to keep our community umproblematic and positive but is very hard like this. And I say this because most of the people doing that are Elriels. I do thank the ones that actually ship Vassa and Lucien because they like them and create content but the people that ship Vassien and then spend hours online writing about how much they hate Lucien need to be stopped.
Quite simple, really. I am not a monolithic person who only likes ONE THING.
I can like and appreciate various characters, and still see that they are flawed and imperfect.
In my house, I love and respect Nesta Archeron--can I also say that she was an absolute douchebag at certain times? Can I say that she was incredibly rude, petulant, self-pitying, lazy and mean? Totally. But she is a complex character, to whom I relate on many levels, whose pain I understand, and whose reactions I get as well. I KNOW I'd behave very similarly in some instances. She is a mirror to myself and I don't always love what I see.
Do I love Rhys? Yes! He was my first ACOTAR love. Do I have a problem with some of his decisions? You bet! Do I hate how he treated some of his closest people, including Feyre? Um, YEAH.
Same goes for Lucien. Has he done good things? Yes. Has he done bad things? Also, yes. No he is not a perfect cinnamon roll who's never put the wrong foot forth. He is a pretty complex and interesting character like a lot of them are.
Do I like Vassien as a ship? Yes, because it makes sense to me, and I would like to see it happen. It makes a whole lotta more sense than Elucien for example. But honestly, if I see great Elucien art, or something that I find interesting and attractive, I'll reblog that too, so much so that people ask me if I am an Elucien? I am not, obviously, but it doesn't mean that I can't appreciate certain things about the ship.
Also, when I reblog certain things, it doesn't mean that I agree 100% with everything that they say. Yeah, the verbiage of the original post was a little rough, but I agreed with the general sentiment.
Now, just for future reference, for everyone--the only ship that i cannot stand, will never support and that genuinely gives me the heebies is Gwynriel. I cannot deal with Gwynriel on any level: I don't like anything about it, I hate the potential dynamic, I hate how problematic it is on every level, I find it ridiculous, juvenile, boring, uninspiring, recycled and unoriginal.
It doesn't mean that I hate Gwyn or Azriel. I simply hate them together as a romantic couple.
Lucien and Vassa together intrigue me, I think there is a lot to work with there, from a narrative standpoint. I think they could have an amazingly interesting story. But it doesn't mean that anyone is above criticism.
That's all. Also, I am too old for extremism. Time mellows all things.

Nessian prompt. Nesta singing a lullaby to Cassian (or vice versa). And it doesn’t matter that they aren’t the most talented singer, it matters that they are getting that love they never got as a child
Nesta sat in the nursery, rocking in the rocking chair that Cassian had brought home that day.
Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.
It was relaxing, to say the least.
Nesta thought their son would think so, too. She pictured the many nights she would be sitting here, rocking him to sleep.
"You've been in here for nearly an hour."
Nesta looked at the doorway, where Cassian was leaning, his broad arms crossed, grinning. His eyes were soft, full of adoration as he looked at her.
"Just imagining the future is all," Nesta whispered, her hands resting lovingly on her bump.
"Imagine the future in bed," Cassian said, smiling gently as he held out his hand. "That baby is coming any day. Sleep while you can, mama."
"Okay, daddy," Nesta crooned, pushing herself up from the rocking chair.
"I love it when you call me daddy," Cassian said, winking.
Nesta rolled her eyes and jabbed him in the stomach as she passed him, waddling down the hall.
After slipping off her leggings, Nesta crawled into bed in Cassian's tunic and sunk back against her pillows. "I need this child to come out of me."
Cassian chuckled, crawling into bed next to her and turning off the lamp. "Any day," he repeated.
"Can that day be tomorrow?" Nesta muttered, and closed her eyes.
"Maybe it will be. You looked good in that rocking chair," Cassian whispered, snuggling up next to her. "A natural."
"Maybe I was just relaxed," Nesta chuckled. "Falling asleep in it's comfort."
Cassian's laugh was quiet. "Maybe. But, you were daydreaming, too."
Nesta opened her eyes and met Cassian's in the dark. She smiled. "I've been dreaming about him getting here for so long. In a few days, I'll be sitting in that rocking chair, putting him to sleep, singing lullabies until he finds himself in little baby dreamland."
Cassian hummed as he laid his cheek against Nesta's shoulder and rubbed his hand over her baby bump. Within the womb, his son kicked. "I don't know any lullabies. Maybe I should learn a few."
"None?" Nesta asked.
Cassian shook his head. "Mom never sang them to me. She was more of a story-reader."
"I intend to be both a story-reader and a lullaby-singer," Nesta assured her husband.
Cassian breathed a laugh. "Good, I like that."
Nesta softly kissed his forehead.
A few moments of silence passed, Cassian rubbing her stomach in careful circles, when he asked, "Will you sing me one?"
Nesta remained quiet, and Cassian had thought she had fallen asleep, but then she said, "There was one my mom used to sing to us when we were little. I'm not sure what it means, I never spoke the language, but it was always my favorite."
She paused for a moment, then began to sing.
Cassian had heard Nesta sing before, although it was usually in the shower when she thought he wasn't listening. Now, in nothing but the silence of their bedroom, her voice rang out clear and steady.
It was beautiful.
Cassian didn't understand the language, either. It must've been one of the old languages. She was right, though. It was beautiful, captivating. No wonder it had been one of her favorites as a child.
As the lullaby went on, Cassian grew more and more relaxed. Nesta began running her fingers through his hair as she sang the words, and Cassian's eyes began to drift shut.
He had no idea how this was his life. He was married to his mate, his perfect woman, the only woman who would ever wholly understand him. In a matter of days, that magnificent woman would be giving him his first born, a son. She would be making him a father, something he wasn't sure he ever thought he would be. They would be a family, something he had never had when he was a child.
Cassian grew emotional as Nesta sang, goosebumps covering his arms, a lump forming in the base of his throat.
Nesta's fingers continued to run through his hair, and when the lullaby was finished, she began it again. Cassian's eyes closed and he didn't fight it. With an arm draped across Nesta's stomach, cradling their son, Cassian fell asleep to the sweet sound of his wife's voice.

For the people claiming Elain is dependent on Feyre and that she does nothing, let me remind you that Elain has a job. She does other faeries’ gardens. If you don’t believe me look:

If she still lives with Feyre it is because she wants to, not because she needs to.

Fix-it fic snippet
Not a single Vanserra had ever actually managed to make it to a battlefield. Eris would be easy- no matter how he liked to look dangerous, half those High Fae tricks wouldn’t work on Cassian. He’d never even seen the pompous fucker armed. Lucien was the real opponent. Broader, stronger, quick enough to get a knife in Cassian’s back in the scarce seconds it would take to throw Eris down the stairs by that swan neck throat.   Cassian could survive a stabbing to break some Autumn bones- but Feyre wouldn’t like it.   “What the hell is she doing?”   In a bored tone, unnatural eyes still locked on Feyre’s careful mural like it was personal offense, Eris drawled, “Your High Lord asked for a blessing.”   Of course Rhys had. For Feyre, grasping with both hands for love of her own sisters who’d abandoned her. Left her behind when she needed them most, only to breeze back with these faithless men playing guard dogs.   None of the Archerons deserved the High Lady of Night.   “A blessing,” Cassian growled, “Not some kind of fucking curse, I can smell the blood.”   Lucien laughed. Full-throated and sunny, he sounded almost kind as he sat up to pin Cassian with his mismatched golden gaze. “Not a curse. Think of it…like a ward. A warning passed from the Head of a House to its youngest descendant.”   “She’s singing about death.”   Like she’d lost her mind along with any shred of honor. Nesta thought Cassian didn’t know what love was? At least he knew better than to think it was shed in blood.   Eris finally turned his handsome face to join the conversation, delicate little huff of amusement loud, loud, loud, in this echoing space. “Death is her dominion. As is the future of the Archeron-Vanserra line.”   “That child is not yours,” Cassian snarled. “Not a Vanserra, not part of your games." “And what game,” Eris asked, head tilted, “Would I be playing, with my newborn nephew?”   The lump in Cassian throat, undulled by biting, cloying red rage, grew leaden. His nephew. Cas would teach that child to fly, would have been there for every milestone of his life with Nesta by his side, if it weren’t for this wretched prick.   It should have been them, hand in hand.   Not Nesta, drowning in death, anointing a child all of three days old for the Crone.

Why Elriel has the most realistic relationship in the ACOTAR series
Disclaimer: If you’re reading this, please take a step back from your personal preferences (ships, characters). This post lacks any subjectivity and focuses, instead, on the timeline (canon) of the ACOTAR series, and what this means for the development of Azriel and Elain’s relationship.
I’m always surprised when I read a post claiming that Elriel is not realistic, or that it came out of nowhere. While I will use scenes from the books as references, my biggest argument against Elriel not being realistic, or having come out of nowhere, is the passing of time (and compatibility).
These two characters have spent more time together than any other ACOTAR couple.
How, then, does it not make sense that they developed a mutual attraction/feelings for one another?
Remember: We have yet to read Elain’s POV, and have read very little about Azriel’s thoughts and feelings, but the little we do know is very telling.
Let’s start by looking at compatibility—something that Maas has focused on, again and again, since their first meeting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feyre draws constant parallels between them—how alike they are in temperament. How similar they are, both able to put others at ease without much difficulty. They’ve shared one scene together, interacted once, and Feyre can already picture it, picture them together.
Most importantly, however, Maas draws the reader’s attention to their ability to read one another. Remember—Azriel’s own family is unable to discern his thoughts/emotions and yet, Elain manages to do so during their first meeting.
This shows how perceptive they both are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their ability to read each other is addressed again in Azriel’s Bonus POV, but more on that later.
Then, in ACOWAR, the little hints about their compatibility increase tenfold. Do you think that it’s a coincidence that Elain interacts with Azriel moments after her first interaction with Lucien?
Tumblr media
(It is also interesting to note the description in this passage. The image is poetic, and the meaning behind this moment (him carrying her in his arms through the front door - bridal-style? - even more so).
Do you think that it’s a coincidence that, after saying that no one truly sees her (or bothers to look), we see Azriel offering to show Elain the garden? He senses what she needs before anyone else does.
(It should also be noted that he offers to show it to her, something that no one asked him to do.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you think that it’s a coincidence that Elain, who is viewed as the weakest of the Archeron sisters, is never afraid (or intimidated by) Azriel, who is often perceived as one of the (if not the) most feared member of the IC? Azriel, with his shadows and wings, with his cold eyes and expressionless face?
Tumblr media
Do you think that it’s a coincidence that Feyre noticed the small moment between them, when Elain looked at his scars and called them beautiful? The scars on his hands are a reminder of the horrors he endured and yet, Elain calls them beautiful.
(It is almost as if she truly sees him, as well).
Tumblr media
Finally, do you think that it’s a coincidence that Feyre, who witnessed both, Elain’s interaction with Lucien and Azriel, questions whether the Cauldron chose the right mate for Elain?
Tumblr media
Again, we have the poetic description, and two contrasting images: brutal and lovely. And yet, Feyre looks at them and sees how compatible they truly are. She knows Lucien well—she considers him a friend—and yet, the chemistry between Azriel and Elain is so evident (and has been since ACOMAF), that she cannot help but wonder if the Cauldron made a mistake.
Tumblr media
I would also like to draw your attention to the scene that Feyre witnesses between them. They are both sitting in silence and yet, they appear content. Do you know how rare it is to be in the same room with someone and not feel the need to fill the silence with conversation? I don’t know about you, but I’ve only ever experienced this feeling with the people I’m closest to.
Azriel understands Elain’s need for peace and quiet (a need that he shares and can relate to, as well), and he chooses to stay with her in the garden (again, no one asked him to). She is comfortable enough around him to not mind his presence. In fact, with Elain drinking her tea and Azriel reading his reports, they are the very picture of domesticity.
Then, Azriel continues to seek out her presence.
Tumblr media
Any interactions between them take place behind the scenes, but again, notice how Azriel is the one offering to keep her company in the garden. Feyre was going to do it herself, but he stepped in. What can we conclude from this?
He enjoys her company.
So much so that, after the Ravens’ attack, when Nesta worries about Elain, Rhys informs her that Azriel was still at the house when the attack happened.
Tumblr media
The scenes that follow are the most widely discussed, so I will only mention them briefly:
It is not a coincidence that it was Azriel (and not Lucien) who figured out that Elain is a seer (nor is it a coincidence that he was the only one who truly listened to her, instead of thinking that she’s gone mad, like everyone else).
It is not a coincidence that he was the only one who thought of her when the Cauldron lured her away. Why didn’t Nesta, the overprotective older sister? Or Feyre, who dreamed of it happening? Why did Maas have Azriel utter, “What about Elain?”
It is not a coincidence that he was the one who risked his life to save hers (and not Lucien).
I believe that, if Elain wasn’t already feeling some kind of pull towards Azriel, having him rescue her was the final push in that direction.
And it makes perfect sense.
She’s never seen by anyone (not even her sisters)—until she meets Azriel. Not only does he pay attention to what she needs, he keeps her company, and seemingly enjoys being in her presence.
Similarly, it makes perfect sense for Azriel to feel a pull towards Elain, as well.
Contrary to what a loud majority has been saying, Azriel does not need another Cassian or Mor in his life. He is quite obviously an introvert, who craves peace and quiet above all else. He is surrounded by extroverts and, if you’re an introvert, you know how draining it can be. It makes sense, then, that he gravitated towards Elain, whose temperament matches his.
Again, it all comes down to compatibility.
They understand each other.
He understands her need for peace and quiet, and she understands his.
They accept each other.
But, more importantly, they trust each other.
Tumblr media
It makes sense, doesn’t it? That he risked his life without a second thought to save hers. By the time Elain gets taken, Azriel and Elain have spent time in each other’s company and have quite obviously formed a bond/connection—a companionship of sorts, built on mutual understanding and acceptance.
Tumblr media
She trusts him. She feels safe with him. Something that I guarantee she hasn’t felt since being violated and changed into a Fae against her will.
Similarly, he trusts her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why does Azriel give Truth-Teller, his legendary blade, to Elain? He doesn’t just let her touch it; he actually lends it to her, and trusts her enough to know that she’ll return it to him when she’s ready to.
In 500+ years, he has never let another person touch that blade—not even Mor, the woman he loves—but he parts with it for Elain.
Tumblr media
Why? Because he knows that she cannot go into a battlefield unarmed, and understands that she, too, trusts him enough to accept it and use it if need be.
We, as readers, understand the importance of this moment. Maas draws our attention to Cassian’s shock, and includes the dialogue between Feyre and Rhys to underline, again and again, that something extremely significant is taking place.
So significant, in fact, that the scene was included in the coloring book and mentioned again in ACOFAS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maas is once again saying how rare this is. How different. How significant.
And what about the description? Like before, Maas uses poetic wording and contrasting imagery to describe Azriel and Elain.
Tumblr media
The only bridge of connection—because what we are seeing, what we’ve been getting hints of, is two people who have slowly formed a connection.
Trust is earned.
Trust is built.
It does not happen overnight.
Remember—the majority of Azriel and Elain’s relationship takes place behind the scenes. We know that they are spending time together—and even have a description of some of their interactions—but we don’t really know what happens when it’s just the two of them.
This connection between them does not happen overnight.
ACOFAS takes place months after the war.
And what do we witness?
Azriel and Elain having grown even closer. In other words, we see progress and development.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He respects her, and cares about her. He makes everyone wait for her to be seated at the table, something he has never done before (similar to when he lended her Truth-Teller).
Tumblr media
Again, that understanding.
Tumblr media
And Azriel seeking out her company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Elain seeing him, paying attention to his needs.
Making him laugh like no one has ever had before.
Tumblr media
And finally, them enjoying spending time in each other’s company. At 3 AM.
Azriel would rather sit and listen to Elain talk about her garden than go upstairs with the others.
Notice the pattern of understanding, trust, and connection that Maas has been coming back to (and increasing, strengthening) since ACOMAF.
Why, then, are readers surprised by their feelings?
More than two years have passed since their first meeting.
By the time we get a glimpse into Azriel’s thoughts and feelings, these two characters have been interacting and spending time with each other for years.
No, his feelings did not come out of nowhere.
No, their feelings are not cliché, or unrealistic.
No, he did not get over Mor after meeting Elain. In fact, we went from this in ACOMAF:
Tumblr media
To this in ACOWAR:
Tumblr media
And finally, to this, in ACOSF:
Tumblr media
Again, remember: ACOSF takes place 1.5 years after ACOWAR, and almost 2 years after ACOMAF.
Azriel getting over Mor has been a gradual process. Same with Elain getting over Graysen.
Azriel does not see Elain as the third sister, one he is entitled to.
He actually sees Elain, something that Maas has been hinting at since ACOMAF.
The relationship (and feelings) between these two characters has been building for 2 years.
And 90% of it has taken place behind the scenes.
Azriel’s POV is proof of this:
Tumblr media
What looks? What occasional brush of their fingers?
We’ve seen none of this.
And it makes sense.
We haven’t gotten their POVs yet.
Even Azriel’s POV is filled with the pattern that Maas has established for them since ACOMAF.
Understanding (and an ability to read each other without the use of words):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trust:
Tumblr media
Connection:
Tumblr media
This is why their relationship is far more realistic (and healthy, but that’s a post for another time) than Feysand’s or Nessian’s. In a way, it reminds me of Kallias and Viviane’s (friends to lovers), who spent years developing a friendship, which then turned into romantic feelings.
Why?
Because they’ve had time.
Time to get to know each other, to connect with each other.
Time to develop a friendship which then slowly turned into romantic feelings and sexual desire.
This is also why I connect with and understand their relationship—more so than anyone else’s in the ACOTAR series.

Tumblr media
Feyre and Nesta hated how their father handled things and because of that they did not have much love for their father who was not a "fighter". As a result they chose his opposite when it came to who they ended up with, they chose two impressive warriors.
Tumblr media
"How you were treated by your father as you were growing up helps shape your view of men in general and what you expect of them"
Compared to her sisters, Elain did love her father and it seems his gentle nature was something she latched on to.
"he was smiling mildly at his beloved Elain, the only one of us who bothered to really speak to him at all."
My father smiled freely, laughed readily, and doted on Elain, who in turn doted on him.
My father murmured his praises to Elain, who beamed at him and rested her head on his shoulder.
When depressed her father turned inward and shut down, not entirely different from how both Elain and Lucien have processed their past traumas though I will say Lucien definitely does not like to sit idle.
When happy, Elain's father smiled freely and laughed readily (similar to the Lucien we saw in book 1 and the Lucien we got hints of once he left Spring - he's not fully himself yet but it's easy to see who he is when not dealing with the all the heaviness).
And her father was business savvy to a certain extent:
I spied my father hunched over his desk, a little scale before him as he weighed an uncut ruby the size of a duck’s egg. He was clear-eyed again, and moved with a sense of purpose, of vibrancy, that I hadn’t seen since before the downfall.
“I’m thinking of buying the Beddor land,” my father was saying to Elain, who was the only one of us listening to him. “I heard a rumor it’ll go up for sale soon, since none of the family survived, and it would be a good investment property. Perhaps one of you girls might build a house on it when you’re ready.” Elain nodded interestedly,
The only reason his hand was forced with the three ships at the start of the series was because of bad deals made by the three generations before him.
Elain never seemed to care that he did not fight for them in the cottage, seemed to hang on to his words when he spoke of business deals and only ever seemed to desire his affection. To her, that was enough.
So it's worth paying attention to how SJM made sure to continue drawing even more parallels between Lucien and Papa Archeron:
Tumblr media
Elain's first real love (her father), the man she held in high regard, and her mate share a way with words and intelligence.
And just as her father was very open with his affection and praise for Elain, SJM has written Lucien to share that characteristic as well. He was soothing and comforting with Feyre when he thought she had a nightmare and is complimentary of his female friends, always speaking highly of them.
I like how she's basically taken Elain and said, "I see your stubbornness when it comes to the mating bond but I'm going to literally make it impossible for you to not fall for Lucien in the end because I'm going to write him to be everything you respect and desire AND he's going to share a bond with the first man you ever loved."
That last part is huge because Elain can't talk to anyone else about her father without it bringing up negative emotions for them.
In Lucien (and even Vassa), SJM has given Elain another person who she can fondly remember her father with as they too share in those similar memories.
This post was inspired by @lorcanisdabest recent post:

Cassian and Azriel's reactions to the Archeron sisters
Everything will be supported by the text. English is not my first language, so sorry for any possible mistakes. Be kind and respectful!
I will begin this post with the scene that was the starting point of my thoughts.
The two Illyrians paused their inspection of me long enough to note my sisters finishing up breakfast, Nesta in a pale gray gown that brought out the steel in her eyes, Elain in dusty pink.
Both males went a bit still. But Azriel sketched a bow—while Cassian stalked for the dining table, reached right over Nesta’s shoulder, and grabbed a muffin from its little basket.
Very often Azriel and Cassian show the same reaction to the sisters (in this case, they go still). The scene above is a perfect example of that and of how SJM is always very faithful to the differences between the couples: there's a difference of personality, which will be the one I'll focus here, and of "romantic status". Differently from Nessian, Elain and Azriel were in love with different people when they met each other. We don't know what was their first impression of each other yet, but with this in mind and considering their personalities, makes sense that they needed to get close first, trust each other, and then develop feelings (SJM writes slow burns after all).
Cassian was sizing up Nesta, a gleam in his eyes that I could only interpret as a warrior finding himself faced with a new, interesting opponent.
“I can imagine,” Azriel said. Cassian flashed him a glare. But Azriel’s attention was on my sister, a polite, bland smile on his face. Her shoulders loosened a bit.
In their very first meet, the males were paying attention to each Archeron, but the way they were focusing on them is different. Look at the wording:
sizing up, warrior, opponent;
attention, polite smile;
While Cassian and Nesta "size each other up like opponents" and are loud/rough in terms of personality, Azriel and Elain are both quieter and acting like peacemakers. Here, please remember Feyre noticing how their personalities are similar:
Though she’d probably cling to Azriel, just to have some peace and quiet.
Basically while Cassian is always provoking Nesta, Azriel puts Elain at ease, because there's a difference of personality. It makes perfect sense that one of them is "enemies-to-lovers" and the other is "friends-to-lovers". Let's go back to the first scene:
“I can help her,” said Azriel, stepping to the table as Elain silently rose. No shadows at his ear, no darkness ringing his fingers as he extended a hand. Nesta monitored him like a hawk, but kept silent as Elain took his hand, and out they went. Cassian finished the muffin, licking his fingers. I could have sworn Nesta watched the entire thing with a sidelong glance. He grinned at her as if he knew it, too. “Ready for some flying, Nes?” “Don’t call me that.” The wrong thing to say, from the way Cassian’s eyes lit up.
Even though Cassian and Azriel's first instinct is the same (they go still), how they proceed is again different (Azriel extends his hand like a gentleman and Cassian is all cocky grins).
Cassian pressed one of his knives into Nesta’s hand. “Ash can kill you now,” he said with lethal quiet as she stared down at the blade. (...) “I told you to come to training,” Cassian said with a cocky grin, and strode off.
“This is Truth-Teller,” he told her softly. “I won’t be using it today—so I want you to.” (...) “It has never failed me once,” the shadowsinger said, the midday sun devoured by the dark blade. “Some people say it is magic and will always strike true.” He gently took her hand and pressed the hilt of the legendary blade into it. “It will serve you well.”
Just like Cassian, Azriel offered a blade to an Archeron sister so she could defend herself. Again, let's look at the wording:
Cassian pressed the one of his knives;
Azriel pressed the hilt of the legendary blade;
And again, Cassian: cocky, provokes Nesta; Azriel: softly, gently, puts Elain at ease. Of course, in the TT scene there's much more imagery (Light and Dark/ Death and the Fawn/ the fact that TT is not just one of Azriel's blades), but still both males have the same reaction when Nesta and Elain are about to face danger: they need to be able to defend themselves, so the males provide a blade.
From the shadows near the entrance to the tent, Azriel said, as if in answer to some unspoken debate, “I’m getting her back.” Nesta slid her gaze to the shadowsinger. Azriel’s hazel eyes glowed golden in the shadows. Nesta said, “Then you will die.” Azriel only repeated, glazing that stare, “I’m getting her back.”
They were speaking, Azriel with some urgency, but Cassian didn’t hear him, heard nothing but the roaring in his head before he said to no one in particular, “I’m going after them.”
They also have the same reaction when the sisters are in danger. As I said before: their first reaction is very similar or even the same in some cases. The major difference here is that we have Cassian's PoV and not Azriel's, but the similarities are so clear:
Unspoken debate = said to no one in particular
I'm getting her back = I'm going after them
Firstly it seems the males are lost in thoughts, so concern about the females, and then they declare they're going to rescue them.
“Do you know,” Cassian drawled to her, “that the last time I got into a brawl in this house, I was kicked out for a month?” Nesta’s burning gaze slid to him, still outraged—but hinted with incredulity.
“What did you see,” Azriel said, and I tried not to flinch as I found him at my other side, not having seen him move. Again. Elain paused halfway up the stairs. Slowly, she turned to look back at him.
It is also very interesting to notice how Cassian and Azriel are the ones that can intervene when the females are "experiencing" their powers. It's like Nesta and Elain use them as some kind of anchor - they both are "lost" in their powers, but can focus on Cassian and Azriel. If Cassian can help Nesta do a scrying, it's Azriel who listen and gets that Elain is a Seer.
Now one of my favorite parallels:
“Are you … happy?” Shadows darkened his hazel eyes. “I’m getting there.” A halfhearted answer. (Cassian, ACOFAS)
Shadows darkened his eyes, full of enough pain that she couldn’t stop herself from touching his shoulder. (Azriel, ACOSF)
Exact same wording. In ACOFAS, Cassian was struggling with his situation with Nesta, and in ACSF it's Azriel who is suffering because of his situation with Elain.
Speaking of ACOFAS, let me highlight this moment:
Nightmares about the moment when Cassian was near death and Nesta was sprawled over him, shielding him from that killing blow, and Elain—Elain—had taken up Azriel’s dagger and killed the King of Hybern instead.
I just find very interesting how the two biggest moments between the couples are brought up here. SJM could had just said Elain killed the king with TT, but she chose to associate that moment with Azriel (she does that very often). Anyway, moving on...
Amren drained her wine and said to Cassian, “Nesta has a week. One more week to find the Trove with her own methods. Then we seek out other routes.” She threw a nod toward Azriel. “Including Elain, who is more than capable of defending herself against the darkness of the Trove, if she chooses to. Don’t underestimate her.”
Cassian and Azriel looked to Rhys, who merely sipped from his own wine.
Here, we have the males reacting to the females getting involve with the Trove (Azriel stiffened/ Cassian growled); then Amren speaks with Cassian about Nesta, and with Azriel about Elain; then both males look to Rhysand
And of course (I'll be brief because there are lots of posts about these lines):
Stupid, stupid, stupid— He didn’t care. Didn’t give a shit as she rose up on her toes, her mouth nearing his—
It was so wrong. He didn't care. He needed to know what her skin tasted like (...) Rhys's voice thundered through him, halting him mere inches from Elain's sweet mouth.
In both bonus chapters, Cassian and Azriel "don't care" about the possible problems and struggles, all they care about is the female before them. Not only the wording is the same, but in both cases the couples almost kiss.
That's the formula right there.
(Her scent) It hit him in the gut so hard he could barely focus, and it took five centuries of training to make himself meet her eyes rather than let his own roll back into his head.
Her arousal drifted up to him and his eyes nearly roll back into his head at sweet scent.
Basically the way these two are affected by the Archeron sisters is practically the same in both bonus chapters. Speaking of that:
I assumed seeing Nesta went about as poorly as could be imagined, because my lesson the following morning was longer and harder than it’d been in previous days. I’d asked what, exactly, Nesta had said to him to get under his skin so easily. But Cassian had only snarled and told me to mind my own business, and that my family was full of bossy, know-it-all females.
Three days passed with no word from Cassian. He’d been replaced in training by a stone-faced Azriel, who was more aloof than usual and wouldn’t even give her a smile.
Cassian in the next morning was still affected by what happened in Wings & Embers, and Azriel - three days later - was still affected by what happened in his bonus chapter. Not only that: these are the only direct references to the bonus chapters in the actual books. The major difference here is that SJM wrote Elain as Azriel's secret, so only the readers that have access to the bonus chapter know why he couldn't even smile (very similar to "Cassian only snarled"). Naturally there's a difference of personality, too: Cassian snarling, totally pissed off/ Azriel more aloof, stone-faced.
It's very clear the direction SJM is going.

A Response to a Feyre Anti
I made a post recently explaining the dread of having to watch Feyre be abused by her sisters and father, in the Tv adaption. And a Feyre anti made a response, to something that should not be criticized at all considering what I said was just the truth? Feyre was abused. Not only that but they went on and completely twisted the narrative to fit their own ideas and in the process made Feyre out to be cruel and Nesta a saint. complete bull.
I will not be tagging the anti bc they have me blocked (shocker), but also I do not want anyone to go after them, if you come across the post, I don't want it to be through me. it's as much respect I can give to them.
I usually do not respond to those who have something to say with a post of mine or are blatantly talking about me on their blog, unless they're just spreading absolute lies about me or what i "said", it's usually a waste of time to do so. but this post attacked Feyre with outrageous lies and a complete backward interpretation of what actually happened in acotar, so as respectful as I can be, I will be analyzing the anti-response and what truly happened in acotar.
"the audience will only see two sisters fighting-not abuse" "it’s not Nesta you need to worry about. It’s audiences calling Feyre a big dumbass and a bitch" -from anti
if the audience has basic human compassion and empathy for humans IRL or fictional, they will see what's obvious from the start. Feyres abuse. how is it going to look, when they see Feyre walking through the woods, shaking from the cold, starving from hunger, and struggling to find food for her family? only to later see Nesta's treatment of Feyre?"
Tumblr media
in the anti's post, they said Feyre was just as "heinous" to Nesta.
is Feyre the one calling Nesta a pig? a smelly pig? ordering her to take her clothes off?
no, it's not, it's dear Nesta. the text goes as "I took my time, swallowing the words I wanted to bark at her" oh yes... how cruel of Feyre. how heinous of Feyre to...stay quiet... at the verbal abuse.
in the same image we see Feyre ask Nesta to do something (kindly might I add) and then inquire why she didn't chop wood like she needs to.
what does Nesta do? acts like a brat and insults Feyre...once again.
considering I'm going off by the story and not the actual screenplay, and assuming they stay true to the story; will the audience not be disgusted by Nesta's behavior? I mean they just saw Feyre struggle to find food and they expect Feyre to go home to a family happy and appreciative of Feyre but instead, they get this familial abuse.
Tumblr media
the anti said Feyre basically tells Nesta this:
"If you keep bitching at everyone like this no one will want to be around you or you can’t marry this guy because you’re a waste of space to me"
but what do we see?
"Believe me... the day you want to marry someone worthy, I'll march up to his house and hand you over. But you're not going to marry Tomas."
the word worthy, did that not catch your eye? Feyre said Nesta will have to marry someone worthy, someone, who will treat Nesta kindly and give her the life Feyre thinks her sisters deserve. bc Feyre does think that IDK why anti feyres think Feyre despised Nesta so much, Feyre loved her sisters.
what the anti fails to realize here is that Nesta marrying Tomas would have been actually pretty great for Feyre. in the sense that, Feyre would no longer carry the burden of her sister. Feyre would not have to worry about feeding one more mouth. or worrying about Nesta's constant stealing of Feyre's money. Feyre does not think Nesta is a "waste of space" to her, if she did, it would have been easy for Feyre to discard Nesta, and allow her to marry Tomas. the anti has that twisted.
but that is not even the worst part of the scene. did you see the shameless slut-shaming that came out of Nesta's mouth? how will the audience take to that? do you think most of the younger generation will take it lightly to see a sister slut-shame a sister? a woman putting down another woman? in this social climate? where the feminism movement is alive and flourishing. will they be okay with it? will they still blame Feyre and be mad at her the way the anti says they will be? I hope not otherwise I'm losing faith in humanity.
Tumblr media
Lovely words Nesta spews at Feyre. I admit Feyre should have told her then and there that Tomas is abusive. but let's think: Feyre is 19 years old, the youngest, has never had any raising by a parental figure, has been neglected by her whole family, where would Feyre learn to calmly talk to an overgrown brat like Nesta? Feyre telling Nesta who Tomas truly is the duty of a parent, not a sister. I will not condemn Feyre for not knowing that was the perfect time to tell Nesta who Tomas is. especially when Feyre is being tormented and verbally/emotionally abused, its kinda hard to think about something else while you're being told all these horrible words. to us its easy to see where Feyre went wrong but unless you're in the exact position Feyre was in. no one has any room to talk. and even then, every person is different in situations like these.
this part was me analyzing the interactions between Feyre and Nesta since anti had reasons to believe Feyre was just as bad to Nesta and that the audience would see that and hate Feyre. I am now going to respond to the second part of the Feyre Anti's response.
"How will an audience of non-fans react to her not reaching out to her family to tell them she was okay after the reconciliation between her and Nesta? Or not inviting them to the wedding?"- from anti
moving onto acomaf now.
Idk maybe the audience will see Feyre, a depressed, lonely, individual in an abusive relationship while being manipulated by other individuals she called friends, and understand and empathize with her. all throughout the beginning and half of acomaf, Feyre is in critical depression. she wholeheartedly believes she should not be alive. that she is not worthy. she doesn't eat, all she does is sleep, self-care is not important to her or others so why would letting a family know she's okay, a family who BARELY ever cared about her, be a priority? it doesn't seem like Nesta or elain or her father was really fazed by Feyre's lack of communication. her father left on a trip, elain got engaged and Nesta, well we didn't see a tearful welcoming to Feyre on Nesta's part did we?
anti, where is the outcry of her "family" not even really caring if Feyre was safe or not, of what happened to her? it's not like they thought she had died, otherwise, where was the mourning or funeral? no, they just didn't care.
see this is where I know when anti is just full of bullshit. why, WHY, would Feyre invite her family to wedding full of fae? the creatures elain and Nesta fear and hate? for all the talk many anti's spew about Feyre being inconsiderate to Nesta, to her family, you would think Feyre maybe just knows a fae wedding would be the last thing they would want? even then, does Feyre owe them an invitation to her wedding? does she owe them an update on her life? nope. Feyre owed them nothing.
"How about her shit-talking Nesta to a bunch of strangers then having the audacity to ask her to get involved in a war. Oh! This is after she comes into her house and insults their hospitality." - from anti
I hardly think Feyre confiding in individuals who she learned to care about and laying out all the trauma Feyre endured with her family is "shit-talking" but for argument's sake, let's say it is. I still don't see what's wrong? after years of pent-up anger and hurt, would you not let go of everything you withheld inside and explain what was done to you? how you felt? Feyre telling the IC her life story, which contains Nesta's abuse and her family's neglect, was a form of therapy for Feyre. I never read a line where Feyre calls Nesta a "cold-hearted bitch" or called elain "a lazy ditz" she just said the truth. no added embellishments. Cassian was the one who shit-talked Nesta during the dinner scene, never Feyre.
I still don't understand why antis are so against Feyre asking her sisters for help? like the war didn't involve them? they're humans, and you know what the war was about? Hybern wanting to take control of the human lands like they once did and turn them into slaves. those humans included Nesta and elain.
"They could have left the continent" correct, except elain was engaged and refused to leave Grayson. which meant Nesta refused to leave elain. but even so, isn't it the duty of humans to band together and work to overthrow a race of people who want to torture and keep them as slaves? the queens certainly weren't doing their jobs. Feyre asked to use "their" house to meet the queens bc where else would they do it? the queens trust the fae less than Nesta or elain did. but even so, Feyre asking to use their house was a courtesy, that house is rightfully Feyre's. she is the one who sacrificed herself to leave with Tamlin. she did it bravely, courageously, and they got that house thanks to her. they owed Feyre everything. and the only one who acknowledged that was Elain.
that war involved elain and Nesta whether they or Feyre or the anti's liked it or not. not even considering that Nesta and elain are Feyre Archerons sisters, yeah, their family name alone puts a target on their back.
How did Feyre or the court insult Elain's and Nesta's hospitality? You mean when Feyre realized human food differed from fae food? something she did not know about bc she's barely been turned to fae and only had eaten fae dishes? Feyre's grimace towards the human food was an involuntary reaction to someone who is still learning their new body. or was it when Cassian called out Nesta for her cold treatment towards Feyre? if that's the case then fuck decency, I would call out a fake bitch in my presence from minute one. you cant call what Nesta did "hospitality" when all she did was insult Feyre when she didn't even care that Feyre had died, or lost her love bc of abuse, or that her body was changed against her will.
hospitality: the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.
did y'all read something different bc this for sure was nothing Nesta gave to her guests?
----
the rest of the anti post moves towards Rhysand and his actions UTM which I won't go into because I'm mainly just addressing the false interpretations this anti had to say about Feyre and her family.
I'm not sure how to sign off now lol, but I guess just that I hope this was enough to show how this anti's arguments were completely ludicrous and have absolutely no compassion for Feyre, and instead all the compassion for Feyre's abusers. This anti had a real spin on what the actual story was, and I hope the evidence I provided was enough to show that. Anyways yeah my brain is fried, and I'm done arguing with Feyre anti's for a while now, I need to go praise my queen Feyre so I can receive some semblance of peace.
anyways, stan Feyre for clear skin xx

A Favor: Part Twenty-Seven
Nessian Modern AU
Masterlist
a/n: working a full time job + part time job tutoring english + applying for scholarships + still having free time left is a lot harder than i thought it would be. which is my way of saying this chapter should've been done a week ago lol.
i call this my goodbye chapter b/c goodbyes are made.
***
As Nesta brings the last of her things into the cabin, Azriel takes the last of his stuff out.
Standing beside Cassian, Nesta watches Azriel shut the trunk over the final box of his belongings. With all the extra stuff he stole from the cabin, it almost seemed like everything wouldn’t fit into his tiny car, but here he is. Ready to go.
He dusts off his leather jacket and approaches her and Cassian. “This is goodbye,” he says, coming to a stop before them.
Nesta once thought this would be the happiest day of her life, second to her wedding day. She should have predicted that her rightful joy would be extinguished by sentimentality.
Cassian claps Azriel on the shoulder, the two brothers having already said their goodbyes in private. Still, Nesta can see a little sorrow in Cassian’s eyes, as if he also got too used to having Az around all the time.
Azriel, the dick, reveals nothing through his eyes. Neither does Nesta.
The two of them look at each other awkwardly for a moment, and then he comes in to hug her. Nesta hugs him back, arms crossing around his broad back, but it has the same stiffness as two Barbie dolls being made to kiss each other.
When Azriel tries to pull away, Nesta clutches him to her with surprising strength. “I know about the picture,” she says lowly in his ear.
“Too late to take it back now.” She might feel him smile on top of her hair.
Nesta lets go of Azriel swiftly, having had enough physical contact with him to last a year. “Drive safe, so Elain can find you in one piece,” she orders.
Azriel grimaces at that, reminded of what waits for him in Velaris. Whatever Elain decides to give him, it’ll probably be deserved.
“I’ll get going then.” Az starts backing away, and Nesta hears Cassian sniffle. She looks toward her boyfriend in concern, but he circles his huge arms around her shoulders and pulls her back to his chest before she can catch him getting teary-eyed.
They watch Azriel get in his car and drive away. Nesta waves until the car disappears fully into the thickness of the surrounding trees, waves until her arms are too tired to keep going.
Once Az is gone, she turns in Cassian’s embrace and jumps up into his arms. Her legs hook around his hips and his hands fit themselves under her thighs. She smiles and tells him, “Let’s go home.”
Ten minutes later, they find themselves sitting in the silence of the kitchen. It’s the quiet of a house adjusting to a missing person, and Azriel’s absence is tangible.
Cassian is the first to break the silence. “Do you think he’s past city limits by now?” he asks as he stirs his coffee.
“No.” Nesta turns the page of her book, focused on reading. “Not if he stopped by Gwyn’s before leaving.”
She hears Cassian stop stirring. “What does that mean?” he says.
Nesta looks up at him and shrugs. “It means he probably wants to say goodbye to her.”
***
“One charge of assault, one for battery, and one huge lawsuit against my company,” Rhys reads aloud from the file in front of him.
Cassian waves a hand in dismissal. “Just make it go away like you always do.”
Rhysand’s near-violet eyes narrow with barely restrained rage. “Cassian. You shattered an employee’s hand.”
“Hey, O’Connell.” Cassian strolled up to him early last Monday morning. The underground parking lot was near empty at this hour, since most workers wouldn’t come in until nine. “How was the rest of your weekend?”
O’Connell looked up from getting his bag out of his car, clearly surprised to see Cassian willingly make small talk with him. “It was good,” he answered lightly. “You left Velaris early, though.”
“Yeah, about that.” Cassian came to a stop by O’Connell’s car and held out his hand, catching the car door before it could be shut. “I had to take my girlfriend home.”
O’Connell looked confused, but nodded along. “That’s nice. Can you—?” He gestured at the car door, indicating to Cassian to let go.
Cassian didn’t. “What hand did you use?”
“Excuse me?”
“When you touched her,” Cassian clarified. “What hand did you use when you touched her?”
O’Connell’s look of confusion morphed into one of contempt. “What the hell are you talking about, man?”
“Nesta Archeron.” Cassian straightened up, hand tightening over the top of the car door. “Your old college friend.” Realization dawned across O’Connell’s face, but he still hadn’t answered Cassian’s question.
“If you don’t tell me now, I’ll have to take my pick.” Cassian clicked his tongue in disappointment. “You’re left-handed, aren’t you?” He snatched up O’Connell’s left hand, and in a flash O’Connell was pressed up against the car, his hand pinned to the doorframe.
“Hey, wait, what are you—” O’Connell protested.
The sound of a car door slamming shut on a hand was louder than Cassian expected. It was the crunch of bones and muscle followed by immediate screaming.
“It could have been worse,” Cassian said flatly over O’Connell’s cries of pain. “It could have been your tongue, since you like talking shit so much.”
Cassian blinks out of the memory. “So what if I did?” he shrugs in response to Rhys.
“You are a member of my inner circle,” Rhysand fumes. “Keith O’Connell is a respected figure in our industry and a higher up from Vanserra and Co., and the head of our Milan outpost, but you saw fit to take out justice on him without asking me first.”
“You had nothing to do with it.”
“That is not up to you!” Rhysand jabs a finger at Cassian. “What will our shareholders think when they hear about this? What will the board members say?”
Cassian is starting to get irritated now. “They won’t find out, because you won’t tell them,” he says firmly. “We both know you’ve covered up worse things to fit your agenda, but it’s a problem if I don’t want a creepy bastard working under my jurisdiction?”
Having learned most of his business tricks from his father, Rhys is no perfectly clean CEO himself. He would’ve done far worse to O’Connell if it was Feyre in Nesta’s place, and he would have ended it all with a speech about how abusers and their sympathizers have no place at Night Court Inc.
The thought only inflames Cassian more; maybe he’s still riding off the anger of O’Connell making Nesta cry.
Tempering his feelings, he tells Rhys, “When you’re done shutting O’Connell up,” because Rhys would do it no matter how angry he pretended to be, “make sure Nesta never finds out about this.”
Rhys sits back in his chair, a bitter smirk pulling at his mouth. “Afraid she’ll be horrified of what a brute her sweet boyfriend is?”
Cassian nearly snorts at the image of Nesta recoiling at a broken hand. She’d probably call him weak for not shoving O’Connell into a ravine. “No,” he answers tiredly. “It’s not violence that offends her, but if she finds out it was in her name… I don’t want to put that on her shoulders.” Which is a shame, because in any other situation Nesta would love to hear about the unfortunate circumstances that led to O’Connell quitting his job.
Rhys lets loose a long sigh. “Damn, you both scare me.” After a few moments, he asks, “Now what are we going to do about Milan?”
***
Life after moving in with Cassian passes by quickly, and before Nesta knows it, she’s completed her second year of law school.
As for the boys who were some of her first friends and drinking companions, back when Nesta barely knew the definition of a friend—today they complete their final year of law school.
Nesta fans herself with the pamphlet she was handed at the beginning of the graduation ceremony, trying to stop the harsh morning sun from melting the makeup off her face. The audience is packed like sardines onto one huge field, and the announcer on stage hasn’t even reached the last names that start with D. Eris, Justinian, and Isaac are all near the bottom of the alphabet.
“Do we really need to be here today?” Nesta murmurs to Emerie, squirming in her metal foldout chair.
Sitting at her right, Emerie throws her a scolding look. “Don’t be like that. We’re never going to see these guys again.”
Nesta sincerely doubts that, considering how none of the guys are moving more than a few hours away. But her uterus is raising hell right now, even though her new meds have put a stop to her periods. Paired with the ache in her back from these terrible chairs, she’s about to call it quits and go straight home.
“Nesta!”
She whips her head to the left, finding Elain striding through the row of chairs to reach the empty seat beside her.
Like watching the Red Sea part, everyone in the row pulls their feet back and makes themselves as small as possible so Elain can have a clear walkway.
Nesta moves the purse she used to save Elain’s seat aside, and Elain drops her butt onto the little foldout chair like it’s a throne.
“A little warm for an outdoor ceremony, don’t you think?” Elain fans her face.
“You didn’t have to come all the way here, you know,” Nesta says.
“Eris made me. I haven’t talked to him since I broke up with his brother, but I think he wants to look like he has a lot of friends here.”
“Yeah, that checks out,” Emerie mutters from Nesta’s other side.
Elain seems to take notice of Emerie for the first time, and her Southern charm turns on like a switch. “Oh my, I don’t think we’ve met.”
Elain introduces herself and Emerie does the same, smiling and nodding politely, and Nesta can’t even decide if she likes this crossover because she’s too busy massaging her aching abdomen.
A string of “Excuse me, sorry!”s go up in the row they’re sitting in, and a moment later a familiar face plops down on the chair to Emerie’s right.
Gwyn leans over Emerie and holds a bottle of Advil out to Nesta. “This is all I could find in my car, babe.”
Nesta releases a sigh of relief and snatches the bottle. “It’s perfect, thank you.”
Elain’s gaze moves to the medicine, then to Gwyn. “You must be Gwyn.” She offers a smile. “I’m Nesta’s sister, Elain.”
Gwyn’s eyes widen imperceptibly, and Nesta realizes she should have warned Gwyn that Elain would be here.
Going off how Gwyn’s been acting the last few weeks, Nesta can only assume that she influenced Azriel’s final decision to move away, whether directly or indirectly. Nesta doesn’t even know much about what happened between the two of them during their weird sex deal, considering that she and Gwyn promised to never discuss such horrible things with each other.
All Nesta knows is that Azriel is Gwyn’s closest male friend, and close friends that have also slept together probably don’t want to bump into each other’s exes without warning.
“Are you here to see Eris graduate, too?” Elain asks.
Gwyn looks like a deer caught in headlights. “Who? Oh—no, I’m just here so we can drive to brunch together after.” Her voice gets quieter with each word, and she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “Nice to meet you,” she adds in a murmur, her face a furious shade of red. She quickly looks forward at the stage as if the graduation ceremony is the most fascinating thing ever.
Elain doesn’t note the odd behavior, instead refocusing on the Advil pills that Nesta pops into her mouth and swallows dry. “Are you still hurting?” Elain says, furrowing her thin brows. “I thought you got that problem fixed.”
Nesta tries not to snort as she accepts the bottle of water that Emerie wordlessly passes her. “You can’t ‘fix’ endometriosis, Elain. That’s not how it works.”
“Oh. Well how was I supposed to know that?”
Nesta slides unamused hooded eyes to her sister. Before she can retort anything, Emerie elbows her hard. “Look, it’s Isaac!”
She refocuses on the ceremony, cheering and clapping half-heartedly as Isaac takes the stage. It’s not that she doesn’t care about her study buddies; it’s just that she feels like shit right now.
Justinian follows suit a few minutes later, grinning and waving when he spies Emerie cheering for him. Gwyn is distracted on her phone through all of it.
The Advil has finally started to kick in when Nesta murmurs to Elain, “How is Azriel adjusting to being back in the city?”
“I don’t know what you mean,” Elain answers innocently. “I haven’t seen much of him since he returned.”
“Just spill it,” Nesta says. “Azriel wouldn’t tell me anything, so I’m assuming he’s humiliated about it.”
Elain sighs, delicately pushing her hair behind her shoulder. “He came to me to talk. I heard him out, and then we went back to his apartment for coffee, and then I took my fabric scissors and cut out the crotch from all his pants.”
Nesta raises a brow. “All of them?”
“All of them.”
Nesta shrugs, turning back to face the stage. “It’s good enough. I could have done worse.”
“Then it’s a good thing you’re not me, isn’t it?” Elain snips.
Nesta won’t say it, but she supposes she is a little happy for Elain. In fact, she thinks this might be the first time Elain has stood up for herself instead of letting Nesta handle it.
After the ceremony is over, Emerie goes off to congratulate Isaac and Justinian. Gwyn follows so she can get away from Elain, and Nesta, being sweaty and overstimulated and more than ready to leave, settles for waving her arms and grinning at the boys from across the field.
She’s about to say goodbye to Elain and make a beeline for the parking lot when she spots a head of shining red hair approaching her. No—make that two heads.
Eris looked unbearably snooty as he received his degree, likely smug with the fact that he has a comfortable job at a family friend’s corporate law firm lined up for him after he passes the Bar. Nesta admits that she’s a little disappointed in him: after all his talk of working hard and being the smartest person in the room, he ended up riding his father’s coattails to a disgustingly high salary. But maybe that is hard work for him, considering that there was such a ruckus in the Vanserra family when he chose to go into law instead of business.
As for Lucien… Well, Nesta really has no idea what the kid does, but she knows he looks good, better than the last time she saw him. An early summer tan makes him glow in comparison to his brother, while lean forearms are revealed under the rolled up sleeves of his dress shirt. He looks comfortable in a way he wasn’t at Thanksgiving all those months ago.
Even with his ex standing just a few feet away.
“Elain,” Lucien greets her with a foxlike smile.
Elain rolls her eyes in response and turns to Eris. “Congratulations on graduating, hun. Now that we’re even, kindly delete my number from your phone and never call me again.”
Even? Nesta raises a brow, wondering what that could possibly mean.
“I take it this is goodbye?” Eris tells her.
“I’m already leaving,” Elain says sweetly. She blows a kiss at Eris, then Nesta. “Feel better soon,” she chirps at her, before striding away in her pastel pink heels.
Very jealous of Elain getting to escape before she can, Nesta calls after her, “Hot date to catch?” She’s wearing the signature perfume she usually does when meeting with a man.
Elain tosses over her shoulder, “Something like that.” Her purse swings as she disappears around a corner to the parking lot.
Nesta watches her go with envy, and when she turns back she finds Eris already looking at her. Meanwhile, Lucien still has his eyes glued to the spot where Elain disappeared.
“You feel sick?” Eris asks her.
“No thank you, I have a boyfriend,” Nesta replies on instinct.
Eris scoffs once in indignation, then twice. “Don’t flatter yourself,” he says with disbelief. “I can care about my friends, you know.”
“You want her,” Lucien mutters.
Nesta’s eyes snap to Lucien, who seems to be acknowledging her presence for the first time today. “And what do you want?” She tilts her head at him, intrigued at having a new playmate. He’s less predictable than Eris, at the very least.
Lucien looks at her and offers a sheepish smile. “Nothing you can give me.”
Eris rolls his eyes at the both of them, clearly regretting bringing his brother along with him. “I’m already bored of this conversation,” he laments. “I’m out; the D.A. is here and I want to say hi. Find me when you’re done, punk.” Eris bonks Lucien on the head with his rolled up diploma and starts walking away, only pausing to extend a mocking bow to Nesta. “We’re not over yet, Archeron,” he calls as he leaves.
Now it’s Nesta’s and Lucien’s turn to roll their eyes.
With only the two of them left, Nesta feels obliged to ask awkwardly, “So… how’ve you been?”
Lucien’s gaze slides to her. “I didn’t know you were Elain’s sister,” he says.
She huffs a laugh. “I didn’t know you were her ex at first, either. Does it matter?”
Lucien’s mouth turns down in thought, but he doesn’t answer her question. “I’m doing good,” he says in response to her former question instead. “I’ve been living the nomad life, traveling around with friends, roadtripping in a van.”
But would you come home for Elain? Nesta can’t help but wonder.
She didn’t know Lucien had dated Elain until after her first meeting with him, but even then it had been something of a throwaway detail. Elain dates lots of guys, and falls in love with even more of them. She seemed to barely remember Lucien’s name when Nesta first brought it up in front of her.
But for some inexplicable reason, Nesta genuinely likes Lucien. A part of her recognizes something similar in a part of him, and it makes her sad to imagine him being stuck on a girl who won’t think about him twice.
“Take my advice,” Nesta tells him bluntly, “and move on if you haven’t yet. Staring after Elain when she already broke up with you will get you nowhere.” Elain isn’t the type to ever look back, and she never falls for the same man twice.
Lucien just looks at Nesta with a blank face. “I broke up with her,” he says.
Nesta’s mouth falls open.
“And,” he adds, “I was staring at her ass.” He starts walking backwards to his brother, giving Nesta an innocent grin as he leaves. “It was nice meeting again. See you in another six months.”
Nesta is dumbfounded watching him go, not knowing what to do with this new knowledge. As far as she knows, no one has ever broken up with Elain except for Azriel—and that ended in Az losing all of his pants.
It only occurs to Nesta that she shouldn’t have let Lucien get away with that ass comment when Emerie and Gwyn suddenly appear at her side, each of them interlocking an arm with hers. “You feeling better?” Emerie inquires cheerfully. “Ready to go?”
Nesta nods slowly, forcefully putting Lucien Vanserra and his too-sly demeanor out of her mind. He isn’t her problem right now. Summer is already here with a vengeance, and she’ll only have so much free time with the people she loves most. So she chooses to focus only on them.
Tugging her friends closer and squeezing their arms, Nesta asks, “Where are we eating?”
