Alright bestie @passiveaggressivegummybear I don't know how you pulled the motivation out of me but here's a drabble. For anyone who doesn't know this is in response to this post I made about Hozier's new album Unreal Unearth, which if you haven't listened to, I HIGHLY recommend. I can't promise actually writing a fic for each song, but here's one based on First Light, because it made me weep. Sorry this is like a month late lmao. Also sorry if it's not what you were expecting, I am physically incapable of writing things without happy endings atm. I hope you like it!

Could This Be How Every Day Begins?

R wakes slowly, blinking sleepily in the faint golden light filling the room. He’s awake early, he realizes, which is unusual for him. He turns, to look at the clock on his bedside table, but he’s not in his room and he’s not looking at the clock. There, on his other side, sleeps Enjolras. He’s still, his breathing deep and even, and he is beautiful illuminated in the light of the new day. Grantaire just stares at him for a minute, not even trying to think about how he got here, just enjoying this sight he never thought he’d get to have. He thinks back to the night before, despite how unreal it all still feels.

He had been anxious. He and Enjolras had been getting along so much better this past year and Grantaire was about to ruin it all with his stupid feelings. But he had to tell him. He’d talked extensively with Joly and Bossuet about it, and everyone agreed their friendship would always be a little bit weird if R never told him how he felt. He’d always be wondering “what if?” about things. They were definitely right, and it was definitely the mature adult thing to do, but that didn’t mean it didn’t make him want to throw up. There was no way Enjolras was just going reciprocate. Probably. Joly and Bossuet (and also Eponine and Courf and Bahorel and-) had been insistent that there was evidence that Enjolras liked him back. They were biased though, they had to be, they were his best friends!

But the bottom line was Enjolras deserved to know. He deserved to know how disgustingly and totally Grantaire was in love him, and if he didn’t want to be friends after, that would be okay. It wouldn’t be okay, a voice in his head said, it would take months, maybe years to recover from. But that wasn’t Enjolras’s problem. Another more sensible voice in his head pointed out that, even when (if) Enjolras turned him down, he wouldn’t be mean about it. There’s pretty much nothing Enjolras cared for more than his friends, and if Grantaire had already made that cut, then a love confession wasn’t likely to push him over the edge. But still, his brain was echoing what if what if what if? all the way to Enjolras’s door.

“Hey,” Enjolras’s smile was like the sun when he greeted him, “are you still up for Pride and Prejudice?”

“You know it.”

It was an inside joke between them (they had inside jokes now!) that Enjolras had never seen a movie before. It was completely untrue obviously, but it felt like every time Grantaire made a movie reference he inevitably ended up explaining the whole plot of the film because Enjolras didn’t know it. Eventually, they’d just started writing down all the movies he needed to show Enjolras. Pride and Prejudice was at the top of the list because Enjolras had read the book, so he’d actually know what was going on. Grantaire hadn’t thought that choice through when he was planning out a love confession.

The movie had finished, Enjolras discreetly wiping away a few tears, and then they were sitting on the couch just talking. It was far too late, but Enjolras didn’t seem to care, and R certainly didn’t. The conversation was easy, like it almost always was now. He was in the middle of telling him how he felt before he even realized he’d begun. He felt weirdly calm. This was Enjolras. He could talk to him about anything. And the feeling of that, that surety, made him tear up a little. He felt a hand on his and looked up. Enjolras was watching him raptly, looking a little teary himself.

“So yeah, basically I’m in love with you. Not basically, I love you. That’s it.” Aaaand the nerves came rushing back. Never let it be said it was an eloquent confession.

Enjolras squeezed his hand, so tight it almost hurt. “Do you really mean that?”

R was taken aback, “Of course I-” but that was all he got out before he was being kissed, passionately, awkwardly, and most importantly by Enjolras. He grabbed Enjolras’s waist on instinct alone, pulling him closer, practically into his lap.

Enjolras pulled back a few inches. “I love you too. I’ve loved you for a while.” He smiled shyly.

“Really?”

Enjolras nodded, some of R’s nerves reflected in his face. “Are you sure?”

R’s brain was still coming back online after that kiss. “Sure of what?”

“That you love me.”

R laughed out loud, “Did you hear everything I just said, Ange?”

Enjolras flushed red, “Yes of course I just mean- sometimes, you don’t want it to be reciprocated. Or… I don’t know you could’ve changed your mind now that you know how I feel. It’s okay if you do!” he added hurriedly, though his expression seemed to contradict that statement.

R kissed him. Enjolras melted into it almost immediately, throwing his arms around his neck. “I meant it. I mean it,” said R between kisses, “I love you. I’ve been in love with you pretty much forever, ask any of our friends.”

“Okay.” Enjolras twined his fingers in R’s hair. He still looked uncharacteristically shy. “I love you,” he said again, like he just had to say it. Grantaire had felt like his heart would burst. He just had to kiss him again. And once he’d started, he couldn’t really think of a reason to stop.

In the light of morning, Enjolras stirs. His eyes blink open slowly, a far off look in them. Then, as if he can sense Grantaire looking at him, awareness sparks in his eyes, and he turns his head. His whole body relaxes when he sees R. He makes eye contact and smiles, a small and joyful smile.

“Hi,” says Enjolras. God he’s beautiful.

“Hi,” says R, and then, “God you’re beautiful,” because he can.

Enjolras blushes and slides a little farther under the covers. It’s adorable. “So are you,” he says. Before Grantaire can make a self-deprecating remark, he continues, “I love you.”

R can feelhimself grinning like an idiot. “I love you too.” He leans into give him a good morning kiss.

When he tries to deepen it, Enjolras pulls back, “Stop, my breath is disgusting.”

“I don’t care, I love you. Bad breath and all.”

“Gross,” says Enjolras, but he allows himself to be pulled in for another kiss.

When Grantaire finishes brushing his teeth, he steps into the kitchen to find Enjolras is making them breakfast.

“Hey,” he says smiling, and Grantaire realizes that that look on his face isn’t new. How did he miss how Enjolras lights up when he sees him? He’s going to get such an earful from their friends later. “Are banana pancakes okay?” asks Enjolras, like he’s worried they really won’t be. Like he doesn’t want to fuck this up just as much as Grantaire. “They’re not fancy or anything, but I’m pretty good at making them and I-”

“They’re perfect,” says R, “I love pancakes of any kind.”

“Great.” Enjolras hands him a cup of coffee and then leans in to pour creamer. “Cream no sugar, right?”

Grantaire nods, watches him pour with a small amount of awe. It’s possible, that this whole time he’s been noticing things about Enjolras, that Enjolras has been noticing things about him. Wow how did it take them this long to get their shit together?

Enjolras smiles and goes back to watching the stove. His hair has a coppery tinge in the light of the sunrise. The sky is beautiful right now, an explosion of colors painting them both in shades of gold and rust.

R must be staring, because Enjolras turns back questioningly, “What?”

“Nothing,” says R, “I just can’t believe I get to have this now.”

Enjolras’s smile is brighter than the sunrise.

3. What fandoms do you write for? Literally just SPN these days. I do tend to just write for one fandom for years at a time though!

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes - eventually. I am always so happy and grateful for comments, they fuel me, but I'm bad at replying to them bc as @nameslikeguns said I can find it difficult to respond bc I find kind words hard to know how to respond to. IRL if someone compliments me I tend to just squirm lmao so my responses to comments are the online equivalent of that I guess! I tend to just scattergun reply to my whole inbox all at once when I feel brave enough.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Oh gosh; as someone who mostly writes angst this is really difficult to say! Most of my endings are *~angsty~*. but I guess the first that came to mind is i don't mean to suggest that i loved you the best.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? That's easy lmao. so many moving parts or maybe some unholy war, which is a fic I forget about because i wrote it so early on... but it has a happyish ending!

8. Do you get hate on fics? i don't know about hate but i've had the odd pass agg anon here and there who wanted to tell me my edgelording triggered their IBS or about how much they hate john. Just makes me lol tbh.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Is the pope Catholic... :) Yeah my fics are predominantly smutty but I don't write a lot of straightforward porn these days (I want to but the muse doesn't take me there). Wanky as this is going to sound I usually build the story around the smut so I can get horny and Make A Point at the same time. Works pretty well for me!

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I used to write a ton of bandslash back in thr day and that quite often involved crossovers from different, er, bands. I'm not going to talk anymore about that though lmao.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not fully stolen to my knowledge but there was a fic going around tumblr recently that had quite clearly borrowed heavily and too specifically from this fic to be a coincidence. The person in question when my friend investigated was actually a minor so... it felt really difficult to do anything about it lol, I'm not about to go after a child on the internet. So I just made a pass agg reblog of the original fic instead like "Hey recognise this?" like the mature and sensible adult I am. But BELIEVE the bee in my bonnet is still buzzing about that.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes in my previous fandom I had a few translated into Chinese and Russian! That was really cool.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes several back in my bandslash days... I wish I could refind my Franz Ferdinand girlies from LJ and confess that I was one of the people behind "the dark!fic" lmao. (Or maybe not bc I was like 14 and had no business being in that community or posting what I was posting).

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? John/the world. I want that old man to fuck everyone. Or possibly get fucked by everyone depending on where the mood is taking me.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Serial killer John may be one of my roman empires and yet it lies in googledocs gathering dust. One of my resolutions for 2024 is to finish it.

16. What are your writing strengths? Ugh these questions make me feel so awkward lmao. I mean... I think I have quite a good range? Which is feedback I get quite a lot so hopefully there's some truth in it! And I think I'm quite good at imagery and emotional pacing ig? I'm not sure what else to call it. Also in the vein of common feedback anyway.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? SELF DOUBT. Honestly mate if I wasn't bogged down with that shit so much I'd be dangerous 🤪 It does make me write slowly and abandon a lot of stuff I start but I'm working on it. From a technical standpoint though I do struggle with plot. I think I'm more of a vibes/moment in time writer than an epic plot writer which does gall me lol. But yeah - I definitely struggle with longer works because I struggle with keeping things cohesive and overwriting/explaining then just overwhelming myself. Again, a resolution to work on for 2024. I also feel like I struggle with dialogue sometimes; if it doesnt magically come to me fully formed which is rare I'll really have to work at it. Trust me if you've ever written a dialogue heavy fic from me then just know that chances are said dialogue will have chopped and changed and been edited within an inch of its life.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I can only speak English sadly and have ultimate respect for people who write in a language that is not their first. That's just so amazing to me.

19. First fandom you wrote for? The White Stripes. Lmao. There were quite a lot of us back in the day.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Hands down i heard love is blind. sharp teeth dry heat and when the stiff wind blows are close seconds because i lived my goddamn truth with both of those fics 🥲 And I have a somewhat complicated relationship with what it is but I'm happy that it exists and i'm happy that it still does the rounds occasionally!

I was wondering if you used any sort of character sheet to keep track of ur oc/develop them. For me, my ocs just rotate in my mind like doner kebab meat in that metal pole thing that spins lmao, idk what it's called in english. 😭😂

Ooh I had another question. Would you ever consider writing your own IF if you had the chance to. I genuinely think that your characters and story would be so interesting.😊

Lala! Yay~ I feel I talk about them the least so thanks for the opportunity to ramble!

I originally played Lala in Blooming Panic. They were a Bloomic MC and they were -- I don't want to say STEADIER but in a sense, I think they're more mature? I struggled with their beats as well but the more I play them Infamous/talk about them the clearer it becomes. I think Infamous!Lala is more -- not reckless per se, it isn't exactly indifference .... But it is very, It is My Life. It is less >[ then Kendis, Less 'Mx. Independent' by Kelly Clarkson and Destiny Child [both songs] and more the Bon Jovi song [energy than all the lyrics, but chorus definitely]

They and Orion definitely butt heads [some of the best options for them ig come off a touch brusquer than Lala would be but best believe they went straight back to sleep when he was speaking to them qwwewqe]. Orion is so on, he has an agenda and a direction for the band -- he wants the BEST for them and there is a way to do that. And Lala is like, yeaaaah -- chill. They're gonna nap if they want, they're gonna do the drugs if they want. Relax.

That said, Lala is very loyal and very -- not distracted? Like in the sense that they aren't going to let the drama keep them unfocused [which is probably why come off very ambitious, even if I wouldn't traditionally peg them as that. The way I would for Hiyam --- or even Alana or BJ]. They're also confident. So even though they're very much the wondering wanderlust character, the dryly sarcastic adrenaline junkie -- there IS sense of responsibility and discipline to them [for lack of better words]

Infamous Lala is they/them [but that might change to she/they later on].

Lala really is so unbothered of all my five -- probably of the majority of my characters. I think it is rather because they are straight forward/it is what is kind of person. They're both a [goth] hippie and sensible. Low-energy but driven for the fun. So if it's not fun and stresses you out, don't it now and do it when you're ready.

Some quotes that explain the vibe:

I think the better way to say it is that Lala is [mostly] at harmony with themselves and thus that tends to influence how they react to things.

That said, August flusters them. It is so funny to me. I don't know WHY yet. I thought would be flat effect chill verses teasing chill but THEY'RE the one flustering THEM. Not a LOT but still [even Xyx didn't fluster them qwe]. Maybe because August is The Big Chill.

I feel I have mentioned that Lala loves cats. Part of the initial concepts for Infamous!Lala was that she stops to pspssp at strange cats. She will stop a concert or walking to somewheere important for a cat. Nothing is more important than a cat.,

Lala loves to eat. They're unapologetically fat and love to eat. I wanted a character like that.

Lala has a lot of smol tatts. Like a smiley face on their pointer finger, something on their wrist. That kinda vibe. Their on-stage look is very dark, goth/rock star, witchy vixen kinda look. [Hello Stevie Nicks? LMAO. It's dark and folky] and though they do love their black, and can def be their Partying look, but Lala is also the type of person to go to the corner market in their super large sandals and sweats and messy hair.

They're the type of musician that gets on their knees, sways with tthe mike, caresses the mike stand, wte -- some people call it 'being sexy' but that's just lala [and some of their songs are Very Sexy, so.

Sides, you're super good for my ego. If I don't answer something it is because 1- I wanted to say something and wait til I was more awake .... then I forgot 2 -I wanted to wait and gather my thoughts and give a proper response .... then I forgot 3- I was tired. Then I forgot. 4- I still don't know what to say even weeks later. 5- I am no longer brain rotting a character/group of characters and want to wait to give the response it's; due.

As you can see I am very forgetful. WhiIe I do get overwhelmeed easily, I see that as a me thing and will never say no to people being so flattering [well on the internet, in person it's different qwerw]!! And you are VERY flattering. Ty <3

That's actually the best description ever because FACTS. Also, I'm half and half. It really depends on how frequent the author updates and how in depth the character gets. For characters that I am just shuffling around with or figuring out as I go, I rotate it. I tend to go witth rotating first. But as we see I forget shit - including my own ideas and lore - so as things expand I do write down some stuff. Not really a character sheet [though I HAVE done that, usually when developing] but like either a word dump or, usually, a list. I am a very type of stream of consciousness person, so there is a rambling flow no matter what. I tend to keep in gdocs [though apparently i should change that soon] and it's like either pre-established facts or details that I realized as I play. [like for a example Infamous: It would be Lala: 1. Gets along with parents. 2. Isn't a fate believing character 3. Genre, etc. vs Ori: 1. Hates his parents (then maybe elaboration), 2. Told Seven it's fate; etc.]

I have1 In all, I have four ideas-ish. Two on my own and two I created with other people. The last two have been on/are on pause because of life happens, and writing my partners have been busy. The two I have on my own, one is much bigger than my current capabilities and the other might become a linear story should I ever find the motivation:

The first is a sort au for Haiti that is very vaguely influenced by what I know about Kings [a show that has been on my to watch list forever] and highly influenced by my obsession with Intrigue. I

The second is -- sorta like dropout actually [in the theme of the story of 'failing to meet expectations'] but modern fantasy. The characters are in their 30s and I think I was influenced by the internets thought that if you arent making it at 22, youre a failure [and romance novel I read mc was like 29/30 and was already GirlBoss and I was like ....... ]

Another is fuck cop dramas, maybe fire fighters but with a mystery-- I guess arguably, for a comparsion bc I love comparsion, it was like that show they cancelled in Fox? With Malcolm Bright. Except not. It's the aesthetics vibe. Sorta w23ew /so helpful

The third would be a detective [LIKE A DETECTIVE AND NOT THE POLICE] but urban fantasy. It is darker than twc but definitely inspired by welp what if MC wasnt a cop.

You didn't exactly ask, but I figured you wouldn't mind details -- and I have been thinking of them lately so ;-P

#4nti 4ntis are genuinely so strange sometimes #do you rlly think diagnosing a stranger with Abusive Friendship #based on one sentence in an ask from a DIFFERENT stranger #about them being around some ppl with possibly overzealous stances on fiction #is the Mature and Sensible and Responsible response lmao #you do not know them!!!!#like sure ppl online can go overboard with this stuff #and can sometimes be quite *toxic*#but there is a world of difference between 'some of my tumblr mutuals have strong opinions of media and im anxious abt it'#and an abusive friendship. which requires a *power dynamic* and a complex system of manipulation and control #and tbh a lot of investment in the friendship in a first place #and not everyone actually does do that w their online friends!#it can be hard to tell from the outside bc ppl can be willing to share more and therefore trchnically be closer #w/o actually putting that much *time* in #etc etc it's just complicated and different from irl #even things like the threat of isolation... like okay definitely a threat to some ppl. but plenty of ppl have strong offline support sys #which their online friends cannot touch #and imo it is easier to find *new* online friends than offline bc the circles you can move in are less limited #if ppl do turn out to be shitty and drop you #etc etc #yhe point is you're making sweeping statements while knowing exactly Nothing abt this person's actual relationship to their online friends

hey, here's a fun question: what's y'all's favourite survivor friendship(s)?

I think we should talk about them more, and there's so many different combinations. I imagine when it comes to platonic relationships, there's gonna be a lot more variation in our favourites than shipping, and I'm excited to hear about them!

as for me, it's a solid tie between Zoey & Francis and Nick & Rochelle. I could talk about both of these for ages but I'll spare y'all most of the details (for now lmao).

Zoey & Francis have such a funny back-and-forth - just say some of Francis's 'Hurrah' lines and listen to Zoey's responses, not to mention her contributions to the running 'I hate _' joke. Zoey's been dealt a really tough hand, and the way Francis keeps her spirits up is very sweet. he very clearly cares about her, especially when she's pissed at Bill in The Sacrifice, which results in a moment of surprising emotional maturity in the comic as he tries to comfort her. I definitely see them as siblings, their banter gives off sibling energy. I'm so glad Valve scrapped their potential romance because what we got is so much better.

as for Nick & Rochelle, Nick needs someone sensible and blunt to bring him back down to earth when he's being an unreasonable dickhead, and Ro is great at that. I like to think her getting angry with him in The Passing made him realise he needed to be better, which resulted in some of his attempts at being nicer to the team in Dark Carnival onwards. she's clearly his favourite from the start, and he definitely respects her above everyone else; their personalities work well together (sarcasm, realistic outlook) but also contrast in places (being nice to the others lol). she's also incredibly perceptive versus his skill at lying and impulsive need to hide things about himself. I like the idea of a strong, mutual friendship between them that never really had romantic chemistry.

Presenting... (drumrolls plz)... SOTY: danmei AU!!!

(Plot bhad me jao this is the stupidest movie I’ve watched after Main Tera Hero - Varun why would you do this to me - so I’m just changing some shit here and there)

- Toh Kahaani shuru hoti hai hamare gud boi Luo Binghe who is v v sanskari and an adarsh vidhyarthi (aka mature for his age gifted child TM who is this close to breaking down lmao)

- Our gud boi comes from the Cang Qiong orphanage and is accepted into the prestigious Sisheng University on scholarship basis

- He gets roomed up with local backbencher Mo Ran who has just broken up with his High School boyfriend Shi Mei and is trying to get him back

- Some shenanigans happen and they fight because Mo Ran thinks Binghe was flirting with Shi Mei (Binghe: i have never done anything wrong in my life ever pls spare me)

- So thus starts out the epic enemies-to-co shizunfuckers-to-fraands backstory!!!! (haan ji you read it right and no neither of them become shizuns)

- Some dumbfuck in college tries to frame Mo Ran, and Binghe with his supreme deductive skills comes to the rescue, thus establishing fraandship

- to say thanks, mo ran drags binghe’s ass into a club and bunhe is mortified because this man Has Never Been In One and is Gud Boi but hey one drink should be fine right? (alexa play vele)

- Several hours later Xue Meng comes to drag shitfaced BingRan out who are both crying their hearts out over failed love lives (Mo Ran mostly cries while Binghe cries in sympathy) with the help of mei twins

(”Xue Meng how come you get the buy one get one free deal without doing anything?” “WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN???”)

- And next morning they arrive hungover to their classes (they have separate classes - u kno what this means)

- Mo Ran gets a heart attack on seeing his ex tuition teacher as a professor, who looks even more pissed off on seeing him (damn chu wanning how red can a face go) which he deserves because 12th grade him is responsible for shit that made cwn leave from his post from their hometown college

- Binghe gets a heart attack on seeing what appears to be a celestial being gifted from the heavens to lowly mortals who they do not deserve. The rumours are true, watching Professor Shen’s face can cure hangovers faster than you can say “LAOSHI”

- 2 years pass and BingRan bond over how attractive their teachers are (prof gu mang and mo xi look at the pining catzuns and go “should we bring out the popcorn?”) and decide to be each others wingmen

- which is WHEN the competition comes in

- Rufeng Corp wants Chu Wanning to work on a project for them and local catzun wants to take on an assistant from one of the students to promote them

- because this is bollywood plot we can’t have simple things so the college decides to host a series of competitions that are thinly veiled excuses for catzuns to see mo wan and bingpup shirtless (xzy: the THINGS i have to do for my ship to sail smh)

- but because this is not karan johar school of nepotism the plot is a bit more sensible ok

- their beloved professors wangxian are doing a marriage and the lans are super rich so half the college gets invited to the destination wedding during the *insert your choice of* holidays (after which competition will start)

- aka time for catzuns and doggos to flirt!!

- local gud boi binghe does a makeup (artist: mo ran) and comes to the sangeet (lets pretend there’s one ok), leaving shen qingqiu choking on his water as all his “Sexy bad boi” fantasies are fulfilled

- mo ran is mo ran and keeps talking about this dude he made out with in the club who ran away before he could see his face (no one notices a certain catzun choking in the background)

- HOLIDAYS ARE OVER and the competition begins. First up is a test in which Binghe and Mo Ran are among the people who pass

- the second round requires people to pair up in groups of two to build a holy night guardian (or at least semi functioning). Binghe and Mo Ran almost get disqualified because an unknown person sabotages their model but professor chu figures it out in the nick of time and helps them win (Mo Ran: HEART EYES ACTIVATED)

- As people keep getting eliminated, Binghe realizes that Mo Ran desparately wants to win this and be with Chu Wanning and is conflicted on backing out of the competition. Because on one hand there’s this, and on the other if he does Mo Ran would feel like Binghe is doing this out of pity or something

- Conflicted, he goes over to talk about this with Professor Shen. But as he is entering one of the floors, he hears Shi Mei’s voice coming from one of the rooms talking to... assistant TA Hua Binan?

- Some eavesdropping reveals that Shi Mei is planning to sabotage Mo Ran’s chances of losing the third round (which is a 100 meter track race) by spiking his water bottle so that he can go with Chu Wanning to Rufeng and to spite Mo Ran (because Shi Mei is a bastard as always) and his cousin Hua Binan agrees to help him

- Binghe is shocked and goes to Prof shen to talk about this. But what’s this??? Professor Shen is outside??? And Professor Liu who doesn’t like bingbing won’t let him contact Shen??? (anyways Shi Mei is a good sanskari boy, why would he do such a thing? It’s not good to slander people luo binghe smh)

- Clearly matters have to be taken into your own hands bingpup

- So on the day of the competition, Binghe sneakily switches their water bottles and drinks the water with the drug. Predictably as the race begins, he starts feeling woozy and faints halfway into the match which makes Mo Ran stop and run back to get him because WTF BINGHE (shi mei wins the race but no one cares about him so ok)

- In the hospital, everything comes to light. Mo Ran is seconds away from throttling shi mei and then binghe (in whichever order) and professor shen promises to hit him with the fan after he gets better. Ah, bliss. Shi Mei gets disqualified and there’s even talks about expulsion from the college.

- Then comes the big reveal that shocks everyone:

- Binghe finds out that he’s actually Tianlang Jun’s son (who died of a broken heart after his business failed and wife died in labour) and that a large fund had been created in his name and safeguarded by his cousin Zhuzhi Lang until he came of age.

- Well. Inch Resting.

- with that Binghe decides to back out of the competition, citing that he’ll figure out something else (after giving puppy eyes to prof shen) and the race is done over. MO RAN WINS

- Mo Ran and Chu Wanning have a long talk over wontons after the race and it turns out that Chu Wanning has been in loooove with him for a long time and they did make out at the club that one time so whaddaya know. they decide to secretly date and make it official after Mo Ran graduates (the only exceptions knowing this being bingqiu)

- And Mo Ran forgives Hua Binan. It’s all in the past! Shi Mei is not a concern now! But because Hua Binan is into Chu Wanning as well, ranwan do the ranwan in hbn’s room just to drive the point home (so really the relationship is not so secret but ehhh... anything for cwn to save some face)

- fast forward a few years into the epilogue: everyone’s married, ranwan and bingqiu are married, bingqiu have their own business (where cwn works) while mo ran opened a cafe, shi mei disappeared to god knows where while hua binan landed in jail

- AND THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER THE END

this is mostly just me screaming into the void, but

tangentially regarding that last reblog,

saying shit like “they won’t tho lmao” in response to anyone encouraging a ~privileged group~ to take a simple action in support of a marginalized group is really fucking petty and juvenile and counterproductive. i don’t care how righteous your cause is - going out of your way to vilify perfect strangers before they even have the opportunity to choose whether or not to do the Right Thing is not just unhelpful, but damaging to whatever cause you’re claiming to support.

i mean, sure, a person who’s mature and sensible and able to disregard the petulance and mean-spiritedness of individuals is not going to be deterred by some simple-ass argumentative quip like that. a person who’s genuinely, deeply invested in doing their small part to support other people is going to do the Right Thing regardless of antagonistic bullshit.

but not everyone is mature, or sensible, or able to ignore or look past someone who seeks to demonize them, and if you’re counting on a person’s strength of integrity to still be able to do the Right Thing even after you’ve gone out of your way to make them feel like shit, then you have way too much faith in the strength and sensibility of the average person. Even people who want to be Good are often still petty, immature, and easily manipulated. Even people who want to be good can be so inept at coping with discomfort that even the slightest jab in their direction can shatter their resolve. (you might be thinking: “well, they need to suck it up! [marginalized group] has to deal with way more discomfort than that!” Well, you’re right! But you can’t expect someone to rework their own psychology in the blink of an eye just because you told them to.)

when you vilify someone before they can even show you whether or not they’re on your side, you are not convincing them to be on your side. You’re convincing them that you’re mean, and people do not feel inclined to support an individual who’s being a jackass.

at least wait for somebody to be a piece of shit before treating them like one, maybe??? at least allow someone to choose what kind of person they’re going to be instead of making the decision for them.

If you’re so jaded that you want to let perfect strangers know that you expect them to be awful, then you need to admit to yourself that you’re not trying to instigate change - you’re trying to instigate conflict in order to achieve moral high ground. After all - you can’t have high-ground if everyone is at the same level as you.

so much of the casual ~discourse~ about social justice is geared soley toward wanting to seem like a Better Person than someone else, and being a Better Person requires that other people be worse than you. And the only way to ensure that other people are Worse Than You is to bait them into doing the very things you claim to not want them to do, and to deter them from doing the thing you claim you do want them to do. and that’s just??? really fucking stupid, tbh.

if you’re guilty of that, you don’t need to feel bad about it, or ashamed, or whatever. You’re not a terrible person, you’re not ~just as bad~ as somebody else, you don’t need to offer a grand apology or anything. You just need to Stop It, and realize that the point of being even remotely active in advocating for human rights is not to be a Better Person Than Other People, but to genuinely encourage everyone to be decent. You need to rediscover the truth that it’s not a competition.

A good person who is also wise and self-assured isn’t going to care about flippant comments that seek to baselessly demonize them. But a good person who’s weak, sensitive, and insecure is going to care a lot, and is going to turn away.

don’t make it hard for an unevolved person to choose to do the right thing. make it easy. make it inviting.

aesthetic & headcanon — public perception

summary: taejin debuted in 2008 as decipher’s leader and lead vocal. 10+ years in the industry, venturing off into his own solo work as well leads his steady fanbase to grow as well as maintain decipher’s fanbase that was there from the start. (an outlook on the growth inside the headcanon). warnings: none, this sounded too ‘braggy’ of taejin, and i swear i wasn’t trying to come off like that — my apologies if it came off like that! wc: 1019

taejin’s coming up on his thirteenth anniversary in the industry, and (i think in famed verse?) it might be the oldest career — could be wrong, please correct me if i’m wrong!

within the thirteen years, there’s a lot that could go wrong in a career. but taejin’s never had a scandal — no speculations either. mainly, that’s his parents doing because any potential scandals that could have risen in the early days of decipher got shut down when his parents paid the big bucks to keep it hush hush

nonetheless, taejin’s grown to have this clean image. it’s like that neighborhood who only does good deeds, and from anyone that draws comparisons? it can be annoying since everything he does seems to touch does well

decipher’s been here for a long time, and one of bc’s oldest groups. not to mention, they haven’t lost any members — all the members from the beginning are present. this leads the thought that perhaps because of the members’ love for each other paired with taejin’s leadership, they’re able to remain a solid force (mainly the former than the latter rationale).

thus, there’s always an aspect of “responsible” when it comes to taejin.

although he hasn’t done that much music — he released one song which he wrote the lyrics of. this song has a good, warm feeling melody as well as the lyrics that add a sense of comfort — it all adds to his bear persona? that realm of responsible warmth you can always rely on, especially if the only song he released as a ‘present’ to fans became a source of comfort for them.

(plus, top tier vocals? melting caramel vocals, and who doesn’t love a man that can sing his heart out??)

predominately, taejin’s solo career lies with acting and brand deals.

with acting — he has somewhat of an array of works. he’s done the weird black comedy (parasite), but lately, he’s been pigeon holed into the genre of romantic comedies (fight my way, crash landing on you, producers). as well as coming of age type style dramas (itaewon class).

each time, his characters have been loved by the public. they’ve all had somewhat of a weird charm about them? like they’re not the perfect stereotype perfect lead, but has a personality trait that makes them feel more “normal” instead of a stereotype of perfection (ie: they’re awkward, dorky, rough around the edges etc.)

this ties back to his actual visuals? in my head, taejin isn’t the visual of decipher. he’s just all and bulky, lmao. he’s not the cg visuals that allow for people to fawn over, taking his pic to the plastic surgeon to say “make me look like this.” instead, it’s a face that’s just handsome because it’s normal? like he could be your next door neighbor, church oppa, older sister’s friend.

because of his visual level / good clean image, brands have reached out wanting to use him to market their products

predominately, he shines in just regular day-to-day products anyone can afford. (dominos, kb kard, yogurt, nescafe crema etc.) this is just because his image suits it in a way that it’s a nice boy recommending it, and a boy that’s good enough to be your boyfriend. aka taejin just has a realistic expectation aspect to this personality.

(another tidbit, taejin has a lot of extensions? and that’s mainly because of loyalty / companies want to continue to work with him for profits. aside from good feel, he just continues to sign on because he genuinely likes working with the brand and staff. gets along fine and even manages to buy them all coffees on set, and padding in the winter. it adds to that aspect of politeness that the staff write on natepann about.)

and because of his maturity? he stands out even more. being born in 1990, he’s not considered a ‘kid’ and it’s harder to imagine him as a super active ‘idol’ just because of his age? instead, there’s a sense of maturity and security because the boy dresses in suits for casual clothes and always seems like a ‘grown up’.

he’d be the type mothers want as their son-in-laws, and the kind of boy girls would want to marry. because he doesn’t have the ‘bad boy’ aura, and he seems like the person that would treat you with the utmost respect

in my head, a lot of people choose him as his ‘ideal type’. mainly because he’s just a sensible pick, and by picking him you’re not subjected to the criticisms of: “you only care about looks” or “really.. him? why?” instead, it’s just universally known that he’s just the pick when u want to lay low

as a result, a bunch of his brand deals pertain to him playing the role of a boyfriend “feeding” his co-star or worrying about their health. it’s either that or the sexy maturity that leaves the public to ‘thirst’ over him

his fan base consists of women in their early 20s to late 30s. it’s a big gap but the older fan base comes from his days in decipher (where they debuted young. the noona fans with heart eyes). and the early 20s comes from the girls who have this romanticized vision of love, see taejin acting as the bad-joke lead, and come to love his character

plus, his viral moment? where he reenacted his kiss scenes (with level of distance ofc) got a lot of praise because not only did he seem attainable? he also suddenly acted upon fantasy, which allowed many fluttering hearts

his personality plays into this too because he doesn’t know how to use social media (makes the public think he’s more like his drama characters than he is in real life), he knows how to style himself (insta boyfriend picking out ur photos?), has a high class image in suits (the kind mothers love bc he just looks smart and clean)

What do you think of the ship Joey x Henry as abusive?

lmao i’ve been toiling over this for a while. Mostly cause my ideas for Henry tag him as extremely sensible, responsible, and clear headed. He was the one person to go “wow this isn’t good” and leave before anything even started exploding! he’s treated everything with such a high level of maturity, figured out how to move on.

also, while I think almost everything joey does is hurtful and abusive, it doesn’t feel... malicious? to me?? like he’s not doing any of it to actually hURT people, he’s not trying to get back at them, he’s just recklessly trying to achieve his dreams and goals. so between those two things, abusive between them doesn’t feel like it’d hold up to me...

i subscribe heavily to the headcanon of Joey’s got a 30 year old Crush on Henry who is Too Straight tm to ever notice, and that’s partly why he was So Betrayed when Henry left him on his own. it’s hard for me to imagine henry staying in any abusive relationship because out of everyone in batim he 100% feels like the first one to (wally franks voice) i’m outta here it from such a situation.

of course, i’ve been still cranking the gears of “how to make an abusive relationship scene” from all of this, cause i enjoy challenging myself for ???? reason, and ended up working on,... s..something...

Thank you! 🥰 Deciding the theme for the Tower and giving it that visual anchor really helped to pull things together. If you consider the whole setup, it seems unlikely the Tower was originally built as an observatory, since those tend to benefit from height (especially if you’re looking around you rather than up, but for the up ones also) and the builders could easily have put it on top of a mountain or at least some hills, but instead put it by the river. It’s above sea level, and it’s away from light pollution, but there were better locations. Nearby.

So either it wasn’t an observatory, and it’s been refitted as one, or they had so many observatories they didn’t care about locating them optimally, there was some other factor making having the tower there important even if it was suboptimal in terms of observation capacity. Or, potentially, it’s been moved since it was built!

:} Yay thank for being interested by the foreshadowing. I tried to put just enough in without actively overshadowing the actual place-setting-up and making the reader impatient with the description.

💗💖✨ Yay! That’s an important feeling to create in fantasy, imo. The wanting.

I really enjoyed playing with the standard forms for ‘thing made of marble’ here, because all these marbles really exist, but in spite of the existence of the word ‘marbled’ our narrative uses of it tend to be tied up with Neoclassical aesthetics. So very white and smooth, yeah?

Also idk if it’s obvious to the reader but this Tower is to some degree in dialogue with Orthanc, which made a great impression on my mind as a child as the iconic wizardly tower, and while I don’t disagree with any of Tolkien’s use of symbolism for the purposes he was deploying it, there’s so much potential in Isengard as a setting that LotR had no space to explore, even if Tolkien would have noticed those angles at all.

Like...the parkland around the Tower is shown being despoiled for the orcish war machine and then reconquered by the forest, but of course it wasn’t forest to begin with. What was it for before Saruman lost his shit? Ordered gardens, for peaceful contemplation? Who dedicated the space that way? Who maintained it?

Did Saruman employ a gardener? Did he design his own gardens, or did they come with the keep, which we’re informed was built not by him but by the Numenoreans?

(“I liked white better” is still one of the greatest lines in a fantasy novel, Tolkien does not get enough credit for his contextually hilarious one-liners that rely on pointed code-switching, but Saruman’s evil rainbow oil-slick robes also sounded really baller and it’s kind of a shame they were not attempted for the movie lol.)

The fact that this is a world designed around a kid getting portal-fantasied into it and staying for 30 years really gives me some options which are fun to deploy but also like. Risky lmao. Because it encourages the reader to surface from the setting-logic and apply their own perspective, which can really break up the magic.

Being able to zoom out on the Tower after all that detail and be like ‘it’s awesome but also it looks like something Doctor Seuss would draw’ was fun though.

Plants are important! As is food supply. As everyone who’s been reading this blog for a while already knows I think lol.

I mean, it’s not about that, really? The Ten Years’ Winter is a historical event--the most recent meteor impact severe enough to have global climate fallout. The dust it kicked up took a while to settle, and the famines were pretty severe.

But the cultural consequences of something that happened a hundred and fifty years ago exist, and are important, including the relationship between governance and disaster preparedness, which varies a lot regionally as you may imagine.

Astronomy has a long history as a wizardly sort of activity in the real world, both because it’s had continual overlap with astrology and just because the process has always been mystical and abstruse. In this setting, with a history of both devastating meteor impacts and being invaded from the Moon, but also actual magic, it’s got more obvious practical importance. Although since neither of these are remotely everyday occurrences, the average person on the street might not agree lol.

So it’s on the one hand a purely descriptive title, and on the other hand a serious boast, suggesting as it does that they are primarily responsible for Watching The Sky For Stuff. While also having broader philosophical implications and just sounding nice lol.

You gotta have good marketing if you want to persist as a wizardly order, because if talented students aren’t motivated to come to you how will you gain new members? Natural replacement is not an ideal strategy to say the least. That’s how you turn into a cult instead of an intellectual powerhouse.

"The northern third of the Tower’s park contains neatly regimented orchards, apples, pears, plums, and a few rows of carefully tended peaches and apricots, all clipped flat against low brick walls angled south and slightly west." hhh t r e e s / "wizards, while enthusiastic about innovation in the abstract, hate change." me too, wizards. me too / "The Tower grounds are filled with refugees." ooh now we get to why everything was empty earlier (?/?)

And technology lol. Greenhouses built against fruit walls with good insulation are so much more sensible than ones heated from inside. Obviously as a passive solar-powered technology these only work when the sun is available and not, for example, cut off by a giant dust cloud.

These people are fairly acutely aware of their dependence on the sun and it figures prominently in a majority of their religions and their magical theory, even more than in ours.

There seems to be a mild consensus that the wizards are relatable. In truth: we are all wizards. :D

Yeah! It really seemed natural. But of course they also aren’t recreating it obsessively; lots of people are grouping up with relatives who normally live across the river, or with people in the same line of work on the river, because people also adapt to circumstances.

No institution is ever perfect, of course, but I’m glad the Watchers have come across this way so far. They’re broadly well-intentioned and mostly well-organized.

And they were not ready for this.

A significant fraction of the reason for the order of the Watchers to exist at all, particularly in this observatory with its great eye fixed ever on the face of the green moon, is to be able to warn the world if this ever happens again. But the Moon People knew they were being watched, this time, and they kept all the build-up to mobilization that might have given them away on the far side of the moon until the last minute.

What the Magister is doing, as I hope was made clear or at least successfully indicated--I wish your commentary on the ending had come through!--is summoning what turns out to be an actual child from another world to do hero stuff.

Even if he’d gotten an adult that would be kidnapping someone to help with your problems, a routine element of the portal fantasy whose ethics have been addressed in a variety of ways, most famously ‘is Lion Jesus and always right.’

The reason they need a hero from another world is that the Moon People build a lot of their wards and their offensive and disabling magical attacks around a targeting system based on what planet people are from, because even though they’re originally from the same stock--they’re the descendants of ancient moon colonists who evacuated ahead of a major meteor impact somewhere approaching four thousand years ago--on a magical level having been born and raised on the planet or the moon makes a pretty huge difference.

So no one can get into the place their magic space elevator is anchored and fuck it up so they can’t keep bringing troops and supply in and loot out. Their single supply line is their only strategic weakness, and they’ve taken appropriate precautions.

Getting someone in from a third location is the best idea anyone’s been able to come up with in the very limited time available. Since no one can figure out how to turn one of the Moon People against the cause they came here for, on short notice, when they aren’t even stopping to talk to anyone so far. Like, that’s clearly not going to happen.

Heron Yl Fanult isn’t unaware that it’s ethically questionable, but he’s doing it anyway.

So I’m glad the ominous imminent oncoming of the Moon People can really be felt, because that atmosphere is fairly essential context for the decisionmaking going on at the top of the Tower.

"Young wizards sit in their bunks, six each to rooms that were previously individual, and hold lighting cupped dancing in their palms." a quick break from being worried to point out that this is rad as hell / "some with their heads decorously covered..." cultural differences!! especially with regional purposes like the Hedro!!

It also establishes the parameters of the magic system a little more. Throwing lightning bolts is pretty iconicly high-powered, right? And here it’s what most of the student wizards are practicing in anticipation of a battle, because most of them aren’t specced into combat and this is actually one of the easier lethal spells to master, especially if you have an academic background.

‘Electrocute’ isn’t a very flexible spell and it’s easy to lose control of, but it’s actually easier than, say, ‘set on fire to a significant degree in a non-electrical manner’ because concentrating a lot of heat in a certain location takes a lot more brute force than encouraging ionization.

You can pull most of the actual destructive force for the palm lightning spell out of the physical air and/or earth if you grasp the principles, which is much easier than channeling a comparable amount of magic directly because it doesn’t have to go through you.

The limiting factors on magic in this setting are how much power you can tap into and how much of it you can actually use without hurting or killing yourself. It’s not usually a lot, though the amount can be increased by things like choosing your workspace, prepping your workspace, and a whole lot of practice and meditation and things like that.

Magical traditions that get bundled under the heading of wizardry tend to focus on force multiplication, obtaining enough contextual understanding of a subject to make whatever power is applied go further. This means a lot of studying theory and using magic to make observations (such as the existence of microorganisms and their connection to disease) and often results in making clever devices based on what you’ve learned that may not actually wind up being magical at all.

Which is why the solar greenhouse proposal is considered ‘more wizardly’ than the fruit walls, which are wizardly in the first place even though the technology is pretty widespread at this point--it’s carried the principle of minimizing the energy you have to invest to get the result you want to the logical conclusion, where you don’t have to do any magic at all, you just set up the situation and get out of the way and the sun will do the work for you.

Other schools of magic, particularly religious ones, are more likely to emphasize just getting better at handling energy for yourself, which tends to yield a lot more in the way of immediate practical dividends and in a lot of quarters wizards who don’t do something obviously practical like physic or smithcraft with their theoretical background are considered crackpots or dilettantes

An impression helped along by the fact that being taken on as a student of wizardry at a basic level tends to focus more on your reading comprehension than your ability to actually do any magic, so in places where religious and wizardly institutions coexist the most talented students have a tendency to gravitate toward the religious life. This is particularly marked in areas religiously dominated by the Compact of the Golden Circle, wherein full ordination is contingent on being able to pull off certain fairly hefty rituals, so if you aren’t physically or mentally up to that kind of magical heavy lifting your religious career will stall out in one of the lay fraternities. In some of the cities on Sutouchel, the landmass to the southeast where the Compact is based, a slang term for wizard is ‘sanctum washout.’

But of course force multiplication is something that can scale up pretty far, and studying theory doesn’t stop you from also putting work into your practical skills, and not having talent isn’t the only reason someone would choose not to seek out a clerical career, if it’s even an option. Religion along the Meroda is pretty localized; communities tend to have local deities who correspond to a natural feature like the nearest mountain or the river or something, and if that deity rates a fulltime shrine the keeper also tends to be the major local medical provider, and since the wizards got settled in at the Tower it’s become pretty popular for shrinekeeping families to send their kids there for a year or two to get some educational polish in addition to what their parent already emphasized.

So depending on where you live and what your personal experience has been you’re going to have very different ideas about what wizards are good for.

It took a fair amount of poking before I decided it was a solid approach; it provides just enough physical alienation that there’s no direct cultural relationship and you can have that ‘everyone in the entire world Disliked That’ vibe, without needing to create any complicated magical and cultural explanation for such a long run of isolationism. They were out of contact because they were On The Moon.

Also I really get a kick out of putting space invaders in a fantasy setting in a way that stops just short of turning into sci-fi.

I’m glad the ritual lead-up is exciting! Even if the foreshadowing wasn’t as obvious as I thought it was lol. That’s fixable.

Gold is for the sun, moonstone is yeah for the moon lol (although in other circumstances people also use jade, because it’s been a long time since the moon was uniformly silver on account of it having been terraformed a few thousand years ago) and pumice is for the world--it’s a stone full of air that floats on water, so it’s popular as an anchoring device for rituals that call on all three local celestial bodies.

so I saw Frozen 2 for the fourth time

i have so many questions.

there’s a relatively negative (and very long) review beneath the cut so pls read at your own risk. and, of course, spoilers.

I’ve seen Frozen 2 four times now and yikes. I’d kinda hoped it would get better with each viewing, but it’s somehow worse??? I really loved the first movie; it literally changed my life in an incredibly drastic way (don’t ask) but it had been very important to me over the past six years, and...I’m so disappointed.

My initial reaction was disappointment, and I should’ve stuck with it. Like, wtf was that? But some parts were also really well done? It left me so conflicted lol

PROS

Vuelie was a good way to open the film; I quite liked the nostalgia :’)

The intro scene in general was good; I liked seeing more of their parents, although idk what their father was thinking telling them such a tale before bed lmao seems like some shit my mother would do

All is Found is my favourite non-depressing song in the movie, and it opens it beautifully. ERW has a wonderful voice.

The animation really is beautiful; it looks so realistic. Specifically the clouds and the one scene of the waves crashing over the pine trees. It looked amazing!

The music is good but not great. FTFTIF is my favourite; it’s so catchy and cheery. I really liked TNRT, and SY is perfect, but these songs just weren’t as catchy as the ones in Frozen?? I’m thankful for AURORA tho, that was a lovely gift.

Bruni was absolutely adorable (even tho he was an obvious cash-grab for merch lol), 10/10 love Bruni. Bruni + Elsa = even better.

Anna looked absolutely breathtaking throughout the entire movie; the redesign they did animation-wise really works in her favour, and now she’s rocking those Emilia Clarke eyebrows which is a hell yes from me. Her final look gave me all the feels; I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the dress and hairstyle?? it seemed a bit too not Anna, but at the same time, it showed her growth and maturity and I’m very happy with that.

As dark as it was, the shipwreck scene was beautiful. It was handled beautifully; their reactions were devastating. There is a huge con here, but I’ll save that for later.

The ocean battle was really neat. The water looked so good, and Elsa looks good wet???

The whole scene in Ahtohallan was well done; I liked the memories. I wish Anna had been there; she deserved to see her history, too, and it wasn’t fair that Elsa got that spotlight once again.

Everything after Elsa freezing was absolutely breathtaking as well. Anna’s reactions, the song, the scenery-- it was tragically beautiful.

Kristoff had the two best lines in the ENTIRE movie: “I’m here. What do you need?” and “It’s okay. My love is not fragile.” It’s so rare to see a good, supportive relationship in tv/movies, be it heterosexual or homosexual, it doesn’t happen. It’s so rare. So this was a beautiful break from that; the faith he had in her was amazing. Thank u. the real mvp.

The scene with Anna as she accepts the fate of her future; as she takes in a breath and realises/accepts that her home is gone, and her blood family is gone. Everything about it was perfect. You could feel her emptiness. Poor baby needed a hug :(

I liked that Kristoff also hugged Elsa when she returned; it showed that they were friends, which is really important for Anna tbh

I think that’s it for pros??? Now for the cons.

CONS:

Gonna start this off simple: the plot was weak. This is unfortunately not an unpopular opinion; it made no sense. It was too convoluted to the point where nothing was explained.

The pacing was off, and it was ridiculously anti-climactic. The layout in general seemed a bit weird tbh I could definitely sit here and justify all of it, but I shouldn’t have to.

They gave us no reason to gaf about this voice that Elsa was hearing. How long had she been hearing it for? Why was she so drawn to it? Why didn’t she think she was just hearing things? Or maybe she did at one point and then realised she wasn’t crazy?

There was almost no character development. Elsa was the same as she was in Frozen, but this time, it was just annoying. She never learned or grew. Anna was demoted to a clingy side-character even though she’s the protagonist; I have no words for how frustrating this was to watch. I miss the Kristanna bickering. I liked their dynamic overall; I understand their insecurities and lack of ability to communicate because of it, and I liked how non-toxic they were. Overall, they did love and trust each other; they believed in and supported each other, even though they had a falling out (again and again) and were separated for most of the film (again, wtf?) EA had no development together, and honestly, they were annoying asf as a duo. There was no communication and no understanding. I will say that Anna’s fear and frustration throughout the entire movie was absolutely 100% understandable and sensible; she’d already lost too much before, and wasn’t prepared to lose anything else. I just wish she’d been portrayed a bit differently??? And it would’ve been nice if Elsa had stopped for, like, two minutes to be like, “hey, are you okay, you seem clingy and worried” but instead she just kept running and didn’t gaf.

It was over dramatic for the sake of plot, when it didn’t have to be. Elsa didn’t have to continuously try and push Anna away “for her protection.” They absolutely could’ve done the vast majority of things together. Fuck, they could’ve gone to the dark sea together. Anna could’ve stayed on the beach while Elsa tackled the Nokk. Then when Anna saw that Elsa was perfectly capable of protecting herself, they could’ve parted ways then and done whatever it was they needed to do. Or, Elsa could’ve taken Anna to Ahtohallan?? They may have discovered there that Anna couldn’t enter, but then they’d be given the opportunity to communicate, and Anna would’ve at least been included, since this was her history, too.

If this is a movie about two sisters, why the ever loving fuck is it all about Elsa and her origins? What about Anna’s origins? They were her parents, too. Sure, we ask “why does Elsa have magic,” but why doesn’t Anna have magic? Why was Elsa the “gift”? Why is Anna’s superpower “love”?? And why is that “superpower” only valid when it’s in regards to Elsa? Why is Anna so strong, physically? Emotionally? Personally? Is it just her? Why isn’t she an element, too? What’s with this bridge bullshit? Why the fuckkkk is Elsa the “fifth spirit” when she’s ice and ice is literally just water? I have so many questions.

How the heck was Iduna Northuldra? Did she become “whiter” because she remained inside a castle for twenty years? Or was she always “white passing”? Or was she adopted into the forest? Who are her parents? Did anybody miss her when she ran off to the kingdom? Her scarf was from “one of [their] oldest families” and yet nobody seemed to know who she was? And what do you mean “oldest families”? Are there no remaining members of that family? Nobody who was missing her? Nobody who would’ve recognised her daughters who are literally carbon-copies of her????

The shipwreck scene and the following scene pissed me off soooo much in the theatre lol First, it really was beautiful how they did it, but the interactions felt out of character. Elsa brought up the memories of their parents’ demise without consoling Anna at all. Not only did she just do it without at least a warning, she then proceeded to leave her behind in her own fit. Which, okay, yes, to an extent that makes sense; she was over-ridden by guilt. But those were Anna’s parents too. Elsa was all she had, and Elsa left her behind. I just- AND THEN in this moment of severe grief and horror, as these terrible things were revealed, Anna was pushed away again to be left on her own to deal with things alone. She’d JUST sacrificed her own feelings for Elsa, and Elsa’s response was to shove her away. WHY. I just??? hello??? Like, Elsa does care about Anna, right? That’s canon? So why tf would they write her like this?? jfc

Every single new character was wasted potential. Mattias above all else was very interesting, and should’ve had at least ten minutes more screentime??? I liked the scene of him and Anna discussing whatever, but there should’ve been more. They both cared more about Arendelle than anyone; they were both sworn to protect. There could’ve been more of an on-screen relationship there. (and don’t fucking come at me with your gross-ass ships please, tyvm). Honeymaren and Ryder were there for ??? merchandise? A reason for Elsa to stay behind? Queer-baiting??? I don’t get it. They did,,, nothing. Yelena? Did nothing. Why do these name-characters do nothing?? What’s the point???

This was advertised as a “big adventure” but had hardly any adventure. Frohana was apart for most of the damn movie, the action scenes had little consequences, the “climax” was ??? what, Elsa freezing? Who cares?? It’s obvious she’s going to come back. The wave heading for Arendelle??? Yeah, that would’ve been a good climax if it actually did any damage. But no, I guess Elsa can teleport now? aight. and now she gets to play hero again even though she didn’t do shit

The plot(?) was very predictable, and didnt really have a twist. Old white guy kills innocent POC. Okay. That’s real life, yeah? It’s shit; it happens, but why was this whole movie based around that? Was it a political statement? We don’t really need more political movies these days??? People are aware, and things are shit as is; idk it just felt forced. But this is a v controversial subject so imma shut up lol

THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES. Unless you’re Anna. Then you suffer severely cuz,,, fuck her, right? The entire cave thing (as beautiful and needed as it was) could’ve been prevented entirely if Elsa had just fucking communicated. But instead, Anna had to suffer again in such a severe way. Her feelings DID have consequences; they effected her severely and even influenced wreckless behaviour. But then?? it’s all over. And suddenly, it doesn’t matter. Suddenly, who cares? Elsa returns and is (for some unforeseen reason) magically forgiven. This ISN’T HOW SISTERS ARE. If my sister pulled half the shit Elsa did, the first thing she’d be greeted with is a slap across the face and a very loud “fuck you.” THEN she’d get a hug and some tears. You don’t fuck with people’s emotions like that. And the fact that there were no serious consequences is infuriating.

Anna becomes Queen without context. Did she want to be queen? Did she suggest it? Did Elsa decided “eh fuck it i’m bored, your turn” and just dump it on her? Anna is a free-spirit. Yes, she was absolutely devoted to her kingdom; her people always came first; she was an incredibly loving and selfless princess, but was she truly prepared to give up that freedom to be Queen? I think she fits the role beautifully; she was absolutely born to rule. But is she happy? Or is she yet again cleaning up Elsa’s mess, since that seems to be all she does?

Why did Elsa stay in the forest? Is it because she felt like she belonged with the spirits? With the people? Away from civilisation? All of the above? None of the above? And how did that conversation go with Anna? How did she explain; “hey, I know I died and fucked you up and promised that we’d always stay together, but I’ve decided I’m gonna leave you behind again and stay here with these people I barely know.” Did Anna object, or did she see the positives of being away from someone so toxic???? It makes no senseeeee, they were so good together in the first movie; it all feels so out of character. Both of them feel out of character.

There were few (very few) moments in which they really were like themselves:

The charades scene.

“You think I’m c R A Z Y?”

Head tilts with Bruni.

Anna laughing at Elsa’s braid-stache.

Elsa making toys for children.

The pleasant Kristanna scenes at the beginning.

Anna’s anger scenes.

Even Elsa’s personal drama???

but that’s it? I’ve seen it four times in theatre, and a few times online (though mostly in pieces) so I don’t think I missed anything. Perhaps I’m blinded by the frustration that this film caused. Overall:

The plot was weak.

The animation was beautiful.

Kristanna wasn’t the Kristanna we truly know?

Elsa was dramatic and annoying because she had no development.

Anna was demoted to a clingy side-character and was given a half-assed purpose.

The music was meh.

There was too much and yet somehow not enough.

It was a mess.

Six years. SIX. I-

ugh.

final note: PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTIONS IF I MISSED SOMETHING. I think it’s also important to note that if you went to the theatre for 2 hours of entertainment, that’s great, but not the same as those of us that have dedicated six years of our lives to these characters? So please don’t come @ me if you were just a movie-goer. I also wanna say that there were a lot of parts of this movie that I loved and will hold onto, but overall, the movie as a whole was meh. I LOVED Anna & Elsa in Frozen; they had good development and had reasons for being how they were. They had a good dynamtic and worked well together. I hated their relationship in F2; it was toxic and forced in many ways; they didn’t interact nearly enough, and when they did, they were bitching for the sake of plot, which was very frustrating.

This isn’t a hate post so please don’t come at me lol my opinion is entirely irrelevent in the grand scheme of things, but hey, we’re here to chat and share, right?
