speaking french and spanish and having non-binary pronouns is a curse

and i'm not even talking about the fact that the whole language is gendered

i'm talking about the fact that "elle" in spanish (pronounced "eyé" (?) is a gender neutral contraction of el and ella

but "elle" in french is basically "she"

So saying that my pronouns are iel/they/elle confuses french speaking people when they read it because they think that my pronouns are basically french-they/they/she and it's annoying lmao

Why do ppl care abt Latinx, like if you dont wanna use that term its fine,, Latino or Latine is also gender neutral,,, but i swear that latinx isn't our biggest problem jesus. #I’ll be watching all of your recs when I’m there 🙏 #I also have so many updates and posts that I haven’t felt the guts to ever say #I’m sorry I’ve been a bad mutual but I’ve been a bad friend to all the online friends and friends from my university #im lucky I live in a condo community w/ lots of extention of family + help! my coastal city - particularly our part of the city #in a particular building where we all meet up together in the front on weekends #even at my sickest - I’m still pretty involved since we see eachother physically & I love cooking + baking for everyone on a 2x monthly #and we all walk the dogs together every afternoon in our dog walking by the harbor group #even then these old people have me in a group text and drop flowers off for me and me for them #living in a community is so helpful but it open my eyes that I’m not even just sick or even a bad friend but those two factors strained #my online relationships bc the effort was so much behind the scenes w/ my health and even typing something out that it makes messaging or #even blogging but I’d like to change that bc I want to be more overt online #and I explain how that relates to Palestine and findinfing joy + $$$ in this end stage capitalist nightmare #I want to be better but I also want to show people the joys of my city (a literal hidden gem yet is a national park) and so between fusing #ideas of environmentalism - community out reach & even descalation of yt Supremacist mentalities when doing outreach + volunteer #even our coastal environmental causes to such great causes that help indigenous latinx members of our community in particular #their rights and their accomplishments in agriculture & how fruitful this place is #we have the best strawberries + berries since they are indigenous plants but anyways from environmentalism to damn farmers markets #I live in a slice of heaven so why leave to go to LA and NYC when I create such beautiful joy by the ocean every day #we have such incredible water views in our condo along with the stunning plain mountains framing the water and sea of palm trees #every sunset is like Santa Barbara (we close!) w/ pink/purple/orange skies that are so vibrant that they make you take pictures constantly #especially with the herons nested there w/ there babies - so close to #is that we watch them all day long + the other coastal birds #all this Shit is random but I realized that if I put my effort into a few things academically that I haven’t even shared in these tags - #that I can have an incredibly fulfilling life while sick as long it pays for itself and I think I can do it w/ a few different plans I’m #creating but I’m setting up a couple of businesss for passive income - go back to grad schooo but for medical research or political science #IR my old life of international relations and start publishing my research on Palestine and Jewish studies #I just need to publish either medical or political but if I do that - have my east businesses that not only highlight my life #but may help the people and animals of my city #but I feel the change finally coming and maybe it took something like this to wake me up #so many funny typos but this was just a quick way to explain that I need to be more comfortable on video + online w/ you all but on tiktok

had an in depth conversation about our experiences of race and gender with one of my friend's housemates the other day while I was visiting and I'm still thinking about it. they kind of disagreed with how I see myself (as a white hispanic) for at least two reasons. the first one I would have pushed back on using the concept of optional ethnicities but we ran out of time, and the second had to do with how others see me, which is actually the same reason I identify primarily as white. like yes under gross older ideas about race I would not be considered white and there are many people today who would put me in some other category but most of the people I interact with assume I am white and treat me accordingly. it just doesn't feel like I can disclaim something that benefits me if it means claiming something else I have no connection to. not that there is no connection, but I am forever conscious of the ways in which my family has become disconnected from aspects of our ancestry, even if it was forced assimilation/attempted cultural eradication within living memory--like nuns literally beating my grandfather until he learned to speak english. I am the first generation on my mom's side to not speak spanish at all and beyond a personal loss it feels like maybe the forced assimilation really was effective and how do you undo that. that's just one example but it's just really complicated and I don't want to be seen as appropriative but also this is far from the first time someone/some institution has decided I am a person of color and it's just confusing and idk what to do in those situations.

There’s absolutely something to be said about the military purposefully targeting high school students who are working class / students of color.

But I just saw an article about how the military is increasingly targeting Latinx students, and that absolutely has to do with Latinx folks’ lack of access to resources / higher education etc.

But I also think there’s something to be said about how common nationalism is in Latinx communities and how that makes us easier targets and prevents us from critiquing the military industrial complex / US nationalism in general.

#this is coming from my Mexican American lens and it might be completely different for other Latinx ethnicities and cultures #where there’s a lot more critique of nationalism imperialism and #federal governments but at least in my family my parents and aunts uncles etc have a lot of pride in their Mexican nationality #and there’s obviously nothing wrong with being proud of your culture but Mexican ethnicity/ nationality was created out of genocide #and imperialism much like us American nationality was #and when we don’t critique that and romanticize our nationalities it makes it harder for Latinx folks born in the US #or who immigrated here to then critique US nationalism and imperialism bc you view nationality as something to be proud of #and take critique of that nation personally as an attack on your identity #for a lot of Latinx immigrants there’s this idea that you have to be greatful to live in the US and that often means #not critiquing if not questioning the systems of oppression especially if you’re succeeding within them #which means we’re often accepting and perpetuating the status quo instead of challenging it #I think a lot of us cling to Latinx nationalities / ethnicities bc many of face a lot of xenobobia and / or racism #and exclusion in the US and again you can be proud of your culture ethnicity and heritage but doing that ethically means remembering #that our countries began out of oppression and genocide of native communities and learning to be proud without being defensive #or dismissive of ppl with less privilege or access to resources #finding community and identity in your ethnicity can be liberating if you’ve been told to be ashamed of your identity/ culture #but I feel like our responsibility as Latinx folks in the US is to choose solidarity with the most marginalized ppl in our community and not #to dismiss the oppression of others just bc it doesn’t personally affect us #personal

It's surreal that so much of my old stomping grounds are devastated in the now-officially biggest fire in Texas history, with over 1 million acres burned stretching into Oklahoma, and I've seen virtually nothing about it on here or any place else but some short pieces on MSNBC.....the lives of poor people in the rural south are just so insignificant to everyone

also a lot of the towns affected have a higher Latinx population than they do a white one, are full of minorities of all kinds (including my queer and/or disabled direct family members), and don't deserve to be blamed for the actions of the same government that helped to create the conditions for a tragedy like this
