The Research Notes

What is life like for a dhampir in the apocalypse?

Bad and uncertain. They’re on the line between human and vampire. For humans, they can detect vampires, making them valuable for law enforcement and ruling elites as living radars. For vampires, they’re the source of potential new vampires since they can be turned easily. But are those vampires as important as their pure blood kin? Usually not. Dhampir are born, not made, and thus don’t fit in on either side. If anything, they hint at an uncomfortable truth about the war: there’s a pathway to coexistence.

An Actual Draft

The druid locked his fingers together and stretched his arms over his head. “Alright, you want to meet some soldiers, yeah? First off, we gotta give you a better name, in case I need to yell at you to run away. What did you call yourself, Longlac?”

“Longval.”

“Nix it” The druid ran his hand against his neck in a slicing motion. “No true names. What should I call you?”

“Charles.” There was no hesitation. It lacked the weight and power of his proper true name.

“Ceorl, eh? You’re smarter than I thought. I was expecting you to go with Mort or somethin’ grim like that.”

Last song: Rapture by Blondie came up while folding laundry, does that count? Last song I sought out for writing vibes was Revive from the image song album ROKKENJIMA in LOVE.

Currently watching: Dead Mount Death Play is a weekly watch for my partner and I, although I would strongly recommend the curious review content warnings before starting. It hits a self-indulgent sweet spot of TTRPG fantasy and urban fantasy for us. I'm also watching through Good Omens and Mob Psycho 100.

Currently reading: Several, as always.

Aria: The Masterpiece (Volume 4). A beautiful, wonderful series, but I find I need to limit myself to a few chapters at a time and let the themes and ideas sit with me. Reading the series quickly doesn't benefit it.

Land of the Lustrous (Volume 9). Many thoughts, not all of them good. I think this series lost its way a couple volumes back. I want to make it up to the current volume.

かれら. A VampDies/Kyuushi doujin short story collection technically about Kantarou and Nagiri, but the POV characters are all OCs living in Shin-Yoko. Very similar to The Common People, if others remember that. Heavy focus on themes of queerness, community, and therapy.

The Keep. I want to understand F. Paul Wilson but I find this book underwhelming for several reasons. Will probably dump again. This will be my third time dumping it. I might start the short story collection The Book of Reykjavik next, although I've been picking up a lot of manga from the library this summer.

Currently playing: For video games, Fate/Grand Order. I should continue Witch on the Holy Night, I was enjoying that a lot earlier this year. For TTRPGs, I'm playing in a Ryuutama campaign and trying to run an Apocalypse World: Burned Over game. I want to start a new campaign with my Apocalypse Keys group.

Current obsession: It's summer, so finding new places to wander and explore is always on my mind. There's a weekend of that coming up shortly with @sl-walker. My partner and I have a 10 day vacation for adventures too. As for fandom stuff, thoughts about how I frame action scenes in my writing have also been living rent free in my head lately.
