note: suggestive ‼️ yes they make out again, and what
series masterlist - playlist - part 11
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"you really made me go up only for you to put mascara on?" the two of you were now on his car, his right hand drawing circles on your thigh while your head was resting on the car window "yes, and what? be grateful now you know where do I live" he slightly chuckled and your remark before gripping with his hand was, turning up his eyes to the road again
the silence wasn't uncomfortable and you were grateful for that, your mind was going one hundred kilometers per hour full of thoughts that were especially about him, does he have a thing for you? friends with benefits? or the toy of the year? on top of all his moves weren't helping to ease your doubts
"you wanna know where I'm taking you?" he broke the silence, you only hummed at his question without turning your head, too focused on the little things the night could give you, even if the stars seemed less bright than before
"We are going to Osamu's shop to pick onigiri"
the mention of your high school friend made you turn around with a huge smile on your face " 'samu? as Miya Osamu? damn, rin! drive faster! we need to get there"
"hey, you seem happier to see Osamu than being with me, I'm the one holding your thigh for your information"
"And you were also the one to take another girl on a date, let me be happy to see him, rin!"
neither you nor he expected that answer; you took his hand out of your leg and turned your head around again, taking what the city could give you with a knot in your throat, thinking if your choice of words was the best, maybe you should apologize about it after
"We are here, let me open the door-"
"I can do things for myself, Rintaro"
you walked out of the car, hugging yourself because of the chilly night running to the big shop that you supposed it was since it had the big letters of "Onigiri Miya" Suna following behind you after locking his car, confused because he didn't understand what go you to act like this
" 'samu! I'm here!" he told a little above his usual tone of voice, resting on the shop counter supposing his friend was on the back
"Rin, what are ya doing here" Osamu came out of the kitchen, drying his hands with the napkin he always had on him "ya wanna eat?- oh? who do we have here"
" 'samu!" you throw your hands over the counter to embrace him on a bear hug, he gladly took you in his arms, his head pressing your neck, taking in your scent, beautiful scent as he thought
Rin grow annoyed at the interaction, you two came to pick up onigiri and nothing more "yo, okay we can stop right now with the hug time, what 'nigiri you have, samu?"
the younger twin let go of you, glancing from the side at his friend that interrupted the best moment of his day
"a have everything actually, whatda ya want"
you were quick to react and answer, jumping as you were a child "tuna! tuna and mayo! please!" rin smiled at you excitement then wrapped one of his arms around you, taking his wallet out to pay his friend "okay then, give me three tuna and three more of whatever you want, samu"
Osamu went to the back, the sight of his best friend arm around you doing something to his body that he could quite describe
"Thanks, rin" you grew soft to his actions, maybe you were overreacting, after all, it was just a random girl, you were his all-life best friend.
he took your face on his big, volleyball player hands, taking in every little detail your face had to offer the world, leaning so your noses and foreheads were touching, your hand came on top of his to caress it, closing your eyes to enjoy the moment.
The owner of the shop was standing right in the door that led to the kitchen, watching the cute, almost cliche scene in front of him, you seemed so relaxed against his embrace, if only you knew what he was saying about you earlier that day
"Sorry to interrupt the cute moment, but your food is ready"
"Thanks, samu, how much is it, bro"
"none, is on me, go enjoy your night"
Tumblr media
"rin, this 'nigiri tastes amazing"
Suna had a specific parking lot in mind near the shop, it was usually empty so it would be a good place to grab dinner with you "yes, samu makes the best, as always"
"pfffff- you remember high school? I was begging for his bent boxes"
the irritation you were feeling an hour before was now gone, happily munching on the tasty food, your left hand interlaced with his right one
"how could I forget?" he turned up his phone to play music because he thought 'something was missing, the lyrics of No Friends could be heard inside the car
"how was your date rin? tell me about the girl"
"It was shit, to be honest, she didn't let me land a finger on her"
you stopped eating when you heard those words, kinda happy that his date went wrong but also mad at his choice of words
"you shouldn't talk about her like that, rin, just let go and don't think about it" sarcastic how you should be taking your own advice
"I'm not thinking of her when I have you by my side"
"you want me to congratulate you or something? you better not be thinking of others while I'm here"
he bent down to make his seat go as behind as it could, you were confused to say at least, until he patted his lap, knowing exactly what he wanted; now your legs were straddling his hips, faces too close to one another
"Are we about to kiss right now..." you said in a sarcastic tone, expecting rin to laugh at it instead of placing his lips on yours "yes we will"
you needed to be careful with your moves, the space was so tiny, but the need to feel every single inch of his body was getting to you, your lips dancing together as if it was something natural, teeth clashing, everything was so messy so desperate, there was not more of that lipstick you applied before going out.
"you were acting all bratty out there and now your panting on top of me, how funny"
your hips were slightly moving with his, getting too drunk of the feeling of his body down yours- you didn't even felt when he placed both his hands on your ass to bring you close to him
tongues were fighting for dominance and the time around you would give up, you needed to show him a little bit of authority too "don't go too ahead of yourself, Rintaro- you're the one with a hard-on right now and you know what? why don't you take me home? is getting late"
you confidently got out of his lap, sitting on the passenger seat while placing the seatbelt across your chest, proud of your actions, you could see the tip osfsuna's ears red while he tried to catch his breath, starting the car again
"good luck next time, rin"

Apologies
Akaashi x Reader
(Please feel free to reblog and comment)
Word Count: 2k
Genre: Fluff
Summary: Keiji is planning on proposing to you, but nothing seems to go to plan.
Content Warnings: Language, minor comedic sexual references
___________________________
Akaashi had been planning to propose to you for two months. Two very long months. Well he knew he was going to marry you about five minutes after meeting you. But technically, he bought the ring two months ago. He had it all perfectly planned out. In two days, he would propose in the place you two first met. He knew it was cliche but, the place you two met was slightly unconventional.
It was the parking lot in front of the local university library. He had actually gone in to talk to the administration and see if he could rent out the parking lot from them. The request was so odd, it took them a bit of time to respond. It actually worked out perfectly since they were closed this Saturday, so they agreed to let him rent it out for his intended purpose. The staff were quite confused as to why he would want that old parking lot until Akaashi explained. They hadn’t gotten enough funding to redo it in years so there were tens of potholes, cracks, and broken pieces of blacktop. The colored lines were fading so most people just guessed where to park. But that very parking lot was responsible for your meeting.
It was early spring, and there was still a chill in the air. Akaashi was running late to one of his classes and was weaving between vehicles in the parking lot to get to his car. You were busy walking towards the library with a book up to your nose. Multitasking you know? Akaashi didn't see you around one of the cars and obviously neither did you, too invested in your book. Like fate brought you together, you crashed into one another. You completely stumbled backwards, less than gracefully, sending your book flying. And fly it did, right into a muddy puddle.
“I am so sorry!” Akaashi bent down to help you up before retrieving your ruined book. He brushed off the cover and noticed the title.
“Shit, sorry I wasn’t looking where I was going.” You apologized and he handed you the novel.
“No, no, it was totally my fault. I was in a rush. I’m so sorry about your book. I have to say you have great taste in fiction though.” Akaashi laughed lightly.
“Oh um thank you. Again, I am so sorry for running into you, well, I mean I'm not, but, uh-that was totally my bad. I’m sure you need to get going…” You turned to leave before he grabbed your wrist while he reached into his bag to pull out his wallet.
“Please allow me to pay for it.”
“No, really it’s fine. You don’t have to do that. Totally my fault. I'm sorry.”
Akaashi opened his wallet and groaned, “Ugh god I am so sorry I only have my card. Here.” He scribbled on the back of a receipt and handed it to you. “This is my phone number, text me your venmo and I’ll pay you back. I’m really in a rush right now, sorry.”
“No it’s fine really! Um what’s your name if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Akaashi.”
“Great. I’m Y/n. Wish we could have met under better circumstances, but I’m glad we’ve met. I’d like to chat about your taste in books sometime.”
“Me too.”
Eventually, you texted him, but it had nothing to do with venmo. Instead you invited him out to coffee and you two just kept meeting. Akaashi felt bad each time that he hadn’t paid you back, but you reassured him it was fine and he could bring money next time. In actuality you were using it as an excuse for you two to keep meeting up. Until finally, neither of you needed an excuse to see each other. One thing led to another and two years passed. Now you and Akaashi were living together in perfect harmony.
Akaashi had contacted Bokuto before he bought the ring. Who better to consult about this than his best friend?
“OH MY GOD YOU’RE GOING TO PROPOSE?!” Bokuto yelled into his receiver. “About fucking time. Okay hear me out, spell the question out in fireworks. She can’t say no!”
Akaashi chuckled. “Well I was thinking of going for something a little more private and personal. And I don’t even know if she’ll say yes yet.”
“Keiji are you kidding? There’s no way she can say no. You two are so perfect for each other!” Bokuto was so excited for his best friend.
“I don’t know about that first part. I just know she’s it for me. I’m just glad I know her pinterest username. I think I’m going to start there.”
“I admire your resourcefulness. Honestly, I bet you could pop the question in a garbage yard and she’d still say yes.”
Then it hit Akaashi and he knew exactly where he wanted to propose to you.
“Hey thanks for the ideas Ko. I have to go right now.”
“But you just called?”
“I have to run to the bookstore right away.”
It was perfect. He would set the open ring box on top of the book when he got down on one knee, finally paying off his debt to you.
All he had to do now was lie in wait. Just two days. He could do it. It took everything in him not to tell you already. He tucked the book into the back corner of his t-shirt drawer along with the ring. It forced a smile on his face every time he got ready in the morning.
“Hey Darling, I’m going to head out real quick to pick up the new air conditioner, okay?” Keiji yelled from the back bedroom.
“Yeah okay sounds good. Oh wait- can you get take-out? I’m kinda too lazy to make dinner.” You laughed and he walked into the living room where you were sitting. A book sat in your lap. Some things just never change.
“Yeah of course. Panda express?” Keiji smiled at you.
“Oh god I’m so in love with you.” You replied. Akaashi scoffed and leaned down to press a quick kiss to your lips.
“Okay I’ll be right back!” You heard the clatter of his keys and the shut of the door. Your eyes cast downward back to your page. About five minutes later you wiped a bead of sweat from your forehead. ‘God it is way too hot.’ You stood up and walked to your shared bedroom to change into something lighter. Unfortunately, your favorite t-shirt resided in Akaashi’s drawer. You pulled the drawer open in search of the thin, white shirt. You fingered through the various fabrics until they touched something hard and smooth.
“What- is..” You pulled the novel out and saw the title. ‘Why would ‘Kashi hide this…Fuck what if this was like a gift for me or something?’ You thought. You already felt bad before your eyes scanned back inside the drawer. A little black velvet box sat in the back right corner. Holy shit. Your hands were shaking as you slowly grabbed the object and opened it. A bright diamond ring stared back at you. Holy shit.
“H-he was going to propose?” Shock filled your body and you backpedaled to sit on the king bed. You couldn’t think.
‘Maybe the ring wasn’t his? What? No that’s stupid. Well maybe it’s not an engagement ring?’ Your eyes glanced back down at the ring.
‘Nope. Definitely an engagement ring. When was he planning on proposing? Sure you guys had talked about getting married before but- he was planning it this whole time? How long?’ And then the worst thought filled your mind. ‘Holy shit. What if he’s angry at me? I totally ruined the surprise! Maybe I can put it back and pretend I didn’t find it? No, I don’t wanna lie to him! Oh my god what if I start off our marriage with lies! He’d never forgive me! And then we’d have to get divorced in our 40’s! Oh god!’ Before you could pull yourself out of your thoughts, the front door opened.
“Hey love, I forgot my phone!” Panic settled in your body and your hands scrambled to shove the ring underneath the blankets.
“Darling?” Akaashi walked into the bedroom and saw you awkwardly sitting on the bed. He chuckled a bit, “Love? What’s going on? Why are you sitting like that?”
“Oh- me? What do you mean? I was just relaxing.” You tried to block his view from the book by sitting upright.
“Did you finish your book? Why are you all sweaty?” Keiji noticed the anxious aura around you.
“Um well you see-” Come on Y/n. Think of an excuse! Come on!
Keiji raised his eyebrow suspiciously and started to lean over to see behind you.
“MASTURBATING!” You squeaked out.
“What?” Keiji started laughing.
“ I was- um masturbating. That’s why I’m all sweaty. Sorry. God this is so embarrassing you should just leave!” You nervously winced. ‘I’m so fucking stupid.’ You internally facepalmed.
“Um okay. I’m sorry I uh I’ll just get going. Sorry babe.” He flushed red and awkwardly started to shuffle out of the room before seeing the open top drawer. Oh fuck. He immediately turned around to you and sighed. He hung his head low and asked, “You found it didn’t you?”
“KEIJI I SWEAR TO GOD I AM SO SORRY I DIDN’T MEAN TO IT WAS JUST SO HOT AND YOU KNOW HOW I LIKE WEARING YOUR T-SHIRTS-” He collapsed into a heap on the floor and put his face in his hands.
“PLEASE ‘KASHI NO I AM SO SO SORRY PLEASE DON’T BE UPSET WITH ME YOUR SHIRTS JUST SMELL SO GOOD AND YOU KNOW WE DON’T HAVE AC! UM WE CAN PRETEND IT NEVER HAPPENED I MEAN I DIDN’T REALLY EVEN SEE MUCH-” You continued rambling before he got up and grabbed your hands. When you looked at his face he had tears in his eyes.
“OH GOD KEI I AM SO-”
“Why would I be upset with you, love?” Keiji smiled bitterly.
“Y-you’re not mad?”
“No, of course not. I’m mad at myself. I should’ve remembered you liked wearing my t-shirts.” He tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. “I guess this just isn’t really how I pictured this going. I’m so sorry.”
“No, Keiji, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault.” You profusely apologized.
“Wow this really brings me back.” He smirked thinking of your first meeting. “So, I take it as a no?”
“What? WHAT? NO NO NO!” You frantically waved your hands in front of yourself. “IT’S A YES! YES! Keiji, I am so in love with you baby!” You grasped his cheeks in your hands and sniffled.
“Really?” His eyes widened.
“‘Kashi are you kidding? Of course I want to spend the rest of my life with you! There’s no one else I want.” You reassured. Slowly he propped his right leg up and looked up at you while holding your hands.
“Darling...I’m so glad to hear that because I will never love anyone more than you. You’re all I want. Forever. Will you marry me?”
“Yes. Yes. Of course!” You buried your face into the crook of his neck and started bawling.
“And just so you know, I wasn’t planning on proposing in our bedroom. I was actually planning on proposing to you in a shitty parking lot.” Both of you laughed.
“Where we met?”
“Of course.”
“No, no, this was perfect too.” You grinned into his neck.
“I rented out the parking lot too.”
“You didn’t!” You shoved his shoulder in disbelief.
“I did. I was going to finally give you your book.”
“You’re such a romantic, Keiji.”
“And now your fiance.” Both of you couldn’t keep the smiles off your faces.
‘I can’t wait to spend forever with you.”
BONUS:
“CONGRATS YOU GUYS!!!” Bokuto hugged both of you. “Akaashi I thought you rented the parking lot for Saturday though?”
“Yeahhhh...about that.” “She found the ring early.”
“Oh shit. Sorry man.” Bokuto rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
“No Ko, it was actually perfect. I don’t really care anyways. As long as we’re together.” You leaned into your boyfriend, fiance, future hubby.
“What did I tell you, Keiji?” Bokuto cawed.
“Yeah, yeah.”
“So what are you doing with the parking lot then?” Ko asked.
“We’re having a panda express picnic date on Saturday.”
(A/n literally could not sleep. Just this on my brain at 2:30 am)

request from anonymous: “Can I get a jean x reader you to have dating for 4 years and plains on proposing but before that happens an old high school friend tries to steal you from Jean but fails badly because you care about Jean more than the friend (can you make the friend Colt, Reiner, or Porco)”
pairing: jean kirstein x fem! reader
req status: OPEN
you were sitting with Jean, drinking a coffee with Connie and Sasha as they were telling you about how a few of your friends from high school were coming into town, wanting to celebrate one of their birthdays.
you hadn’t seen Porco, Colt, or Reiner in years. after high school, they all had went to different universities as you and Jean went to the same university, promptly moving in together. while you would have kept in contact, you really didn’t feel a need too as you had all of your closest friends in the same university as you.
“that’s exciting, what are they planning on doing for Colt’s birthday?” you asked Sasha. she read the message again, “oh, they want to grab dinner or something. I really don’t know as Porco, per usual, hardly specified on the plans,” Sasha explained.
Jean gave you a look, hoping you denied the plans. both of you were landing on your fourth year together this weekend and he knew this year would be the year he would be proposing to you. Connie had went with him to pick out your ring, reminding himself not to tell Sasha or else her loud mouth would go and tell you by complete accident.
the four years the both of you spent together were some of the most refreshing years of his life. when you met him your senior year, crushes he had on anyone at that time were completely wiped away. Mikasa? he left her completely to Eren. the girls hitting him up for a random Saturday night adventure were blocked.
“I mean, Jean and I weren’t planning on anything so I don’t see why not?” you looked over to Jean, whose face dropped a bit. he nodded, not really muttering in agreement but nodding his head yes, “I’ll just text Reiner for the information tonight,” you told Sasha, grabbing your wallet before heading to the cashier to pay for your drink, along with Jean’s.
“why Colt’s birthday? why did he decide to come here?” Jean complained to the two. Connie laughed, sensing his friends jealousy, “don’t tell me you’re still jealous of their old relationship?” Connie joked.
Jean didn’t say much, confirming Connie’s theory. Sasha couldn’t help but laugh, shaking her head at his ridiculousness.
“its been four years Jean,” Sasha said, “they probably haven’t spoken since graduation,” Sasha added on. Jean rolled his eyes, “still, they were in that play together and nothing in the world can change my mind that he didn’t have feelings for her,” Jean stated.
Connie and Sasha groaned, the three of them dropping the topic as you walked back to the table. you motioned to Jean as you put your jacket on, “well, we’re heading home to get ready. Reiner mentioned they were coming down here around nine so we I guess we should be getting ready and all that jazz?” you told the three.
Connie and Sasha giggled to themselves, taking in Jean’s face as he pulled on his own jacket. you wondered what had them so giggly but decided to drop it, knowing it was some weird thing going on between them.
you told the two goodbye, grabbing Jean’s hand and intertwining it with yours. “you okay?” you asked, “you’ve been weird since Sasha brought up the thing for Colt’s birthday.”
Jean shook his head, “I’m fine, just have a small headache,” yeah, that headache was Colt Grice himself. you ran your fingers through his hair, “you can lay down for a while, maybe it’ll go away with some ibuprofen?” you said, “I can run you a warm towel and get in the shower while you’re laying down. if you’re still feeling under the weather, we can just skip his birthday and apologize tomorrow.”
he could see the concern on your face, laughing to himself about how worried you got about a measly headache. Jean kissed you, telling you not to worry about and that he would be fine by the time the outing came around.
once you got home, Jean laid down on the couch, taking your warm towel and putting it on until he heard the shower running. he took it off, feeling a bit bad that he lied about having a headache but he just couldn’t stand the fact that you had to be around Colt tonight. a feeling in his gut telling him to watch out for the blond.
the night rolled around as you spent most of the afternoon finishing your makeup. when Jean saw you walkout of the bathroom with your makeup done, his jaw dropped on the floor. you hadn’t gotten that dressed up in months and if he was being honest, he kinda hated it.
Jean hated it only because that meant that he hadn’t taken you out properly in months. you were wearing one of your favorite outfits, one he loved because it hugged your curves nicely and your hair was styled the way you always did it when you went out with him.
“you look amazing babe,” his whispered, bringing you in for a kiss. you smiled, “thanks! figured since we’re actually going out tonight, might as well dress up for you while we’re at it,” you said, giving him a quick kiss before slipping on your shoes and texting Sasha and Reiner that you were both on your way to the restaurant.
the entire time, Jean held his jean pocket that held the engagement ring. he had no idea why he brought it but in the back of his mind, something had screamed at him to just bring it. Connie every now and again had asked him if he popped the question yet and every time he said no, Connie would scream to him about it.
the restaurant was a few miles out of town, in a college bar crawl part of town. Jean had been to this area a few times before but he wondered why the boys had picked that part of town since they were no longer freshman.
you parked right next to where Connie and Sasha were at. the two of them complimenting how nice you looked. Connie looked over to Jean, whispering that you dressed up rather cute for a reunion with Colt. Jean’s eye twitched, knowing he was doing it to get under his skin.
you found Reiner and Colt in the front waiting for all of you. you instantly hugged Reiner, whispering how much you missed him before you heard a scoff coming from Colt. you released Reiner, giving Colt a smile as he instantly brought you in a hug.
“hi to you too, Colt,” you laughed, releasing him. you brought Jean over to you, “I’m sure you remember Jean,” you mentioned, squeezing his hand. Colt nodded, giving Jean a simple head nod and redirecting his entire attention to you again.
Jean could sense this was going to be a long night as all of you walked into the restaurant. you made sure to sit next to Jean and Sasha, making sure that you didn’t leave Jean’s side considering the restaurant was a bit packed.
+
it was nearing midnight and you could feel yourself getting a bit buzzed with the alcohol you were drinking. you weren’t planning on getting plastered but the two glasses of wine you had was a bit strong and you found yourself laughing more than usual.
some how, you ended up talking with Colt near the bar as Jean, Reiner, Porco, Connie, and Sasha were all playing pool together. you weren’t really interested in the game and Colt offered to stay by your side, mumbling a sarcastic comment to Jean about how he would take care of you.
“so, how are you and Jean?” Colt asked randomly. he saw how your eyes lit up at the mention of your boyfriend, “great! we’re about to head into our four year anniversary,” you said excitedly.
Colt’s eyebrows fluttered in confusion.
“four years? and still hasn’t proposed to you?” he asked trying not to seem pushy. you shrugged, “it’s fine. I’m not in a rush to get married and neither is Jean. whenever he pops the question, I’ll obviously say yes,” you said a bit dreamily.
Colt sighed before trying to grab your hand. you gave him a look, wondering what the hell came over the blond as you pushed yourself back a bit. Jean saw the entire interaction happening, letting you deal with it until he felt like you couldn’t anymore.
“I’m just saying, if you ever wanted.....to you know, give me a try again, I’d always be okay with that,” you didn’t know what to say. giving him a silent response before sighing, “Colt, you’re a great friend but Jean and I really great together and I already told you, our anniversary is close and I don’t hold the feelings I once had for you,” you murmured, finally.
Colt sighed, not knowing what to say but before he could say anything, Jean walked over to you, knowing you had denied whatever Colt was doing to you as his look of sadness was written all over his face. you gave Jean a sigh of relief, kissing him as if Colt wasn’t even there.
he took you back to where everyone was, Colt slowly making his way later after trying to get over his rejection. you had kept yourself by Jean’s side for the rest of the night, holding and kissing him, making everyone else gag at how affectionate you were being.
Jean had wanted to catch a fresh of breath air before spending the final few minutes with everyone else until the bar closed. you agreed to come out with him as you instantly told him what Colt had did earlier and laughing together. you felt a bit bad for laughing at Colt’s expense.
once the laughing died down, Jean looked at you, taking you in under the moonlight and bringing you in for a kiss. you were bit flustered at the way it turned a bit heated but soon, Jean pulled away, caressing your cheek before grabbing something from his pocket.
“I would have saved this for a different time but it’s been on my mind all day,” he opened the box, showing you the ring as you realized what he was doing. You heard gasps from all of your friends as they were coming out of the restaurant to inform you that it was closing but instead, they watched as Jean knelt down on one knee.
“I would give you some grand speech but you know that you mean the world to me and making you my wife...the future Mrs.Kirstein would mean even more to me.”
you smiled, wiping a tear off your face as you nodded and screamed yes. Jean instantly picked you up, spinning you in circles before finally letting you down and putting the ring on your finger. Sasha and Connie ran out the door, Sasha basically knocking you down to the ground as Connie gave Jean a ‘bro’ hug.
the two of them congratulating you as Reiner and Porco congratulated you afterwards. Colt had saw the entire interaction happen but remained inside, not wanting to see you or Jean.
you gave Jean a kiss, telling everyone that you both wanted to head out. you knew what Jean had planned as his hands were roaming everywhere on your body with kisses littering your neck and shoulder. Sasha and Connie understood exactly what Jean was doing as Sasha murmured about making sure to not have a kid tonight.

Secrets {Elorcan}
Written, as always, with @tacmc, aka the LOML.
Tumblr media
Lorcan got a dreadful sense of deja vu as he trekked across town in his Jeep.
He was happily downing his second beer of the night, alone in his apartment watching Back to the Future when her text came through. Even though his mind protested, his body was moving toward his front door, slipping on his boots, and grabbing his keys and wallet before he even finished reading her words.
I need you. Please.
He knew where she had been all night, knew who she had been with. Now, Lorcan had to go pick up the pieces.
If only she had listened to him to begin with.
The snow was coming down hard. What had started out as some light flurries earlier in the evening had now coated everything the eye could see in a thick, white blanket. He probably should have driven a little more slowly, but he had to get to her, had to make sure that she was okay.
Even if she’d done it to herself.
When he pulled into her driveway, parking behind her little red car, Lorcan could still see the tire tracks in front of her house. He couldn’t have been gone for ten minutes before she had texted him.
Flipping the visor down, Lorcan looked at himself in the small mirror. It wasn’t that he needed to make sure he looked okay or that he needed to impress her. He needed to make sure that he kept his cool while he was in there. She already knew what he was thinking. It was up to him to make sure he didn’t say it.
With a sigh, Lorcan was out of the Jeep and tugging the beanie he wore down over his loose hair. He rang the doorbell and waited. And waited. And waited.
When she came to the door, her eyes were red and her nose was sniffly.
She didn’t say a word.
A second passed before Lorcan sighed and he pulled Elide into his arms, patting her back softly. He didn’t bother telling her all was okay. He didn’t trust his own voice. So, he remained quiet and patted her back until she backed up, pulled him inside, and shut the door behind them, shutting out the cold.
“I have wine,” Elide said, quietly, as she made her way to the kitchen. “I know it’s not your drink of choice, but you’re welcome to a glass.”
Lorcan stopped in the doorway of her little kitchen and leaned against the frame, his broad arms crossed. “Wine tastes like piss.”
“Says the man that downs beer like water,” Elide said, meant to add onto his sarcastic comment, but there was no bite to it, nor humor.
Instead, Elide looked down at her empty glass before filling it again.
Lorcan said nothing.
He knew he should say something comforting, but he was having trouble coming up with anything to say. After Elide’s third sip of wine, he settled for, “You okay?”
Elide set her glass calmly on the countertop. “Honestly?”
“Have I ever asked for anything other than honesty from you?” Lorcan followed, trying to keep his voice as calm as possible.
Elide slowly shook her head. “I’m almost out of wine.”
“Then it looks like we’re going for a drive,” he said, simply. “Come on.”
Elide didn’t argue. She just nodded, pulled her boots on and grabbed her coat. They walked out into the snow and Lorcan opened her door before helping her up into the passenger seat.
The ride to the liquor store was quiet. The music played softly in the background, but neither of them were really listening. Lorcan wasn’t sure if Elide was even paying attention to anything as they drove through the town. When they parked, Lorcan was out of the truck before Elide could even unbuckle her seatbelt. After a few minutes, he returned with three bags. One held Elide’s wine, one very clearly held a six-pack of beer, but the third was a mystery.
Looking back at the bags in the backseat, Elide chuckled quietly and said, “You need to be drunk for this, too?”
Lorcan glanced over at her, but his eyes were back on the road a second later. His silence was answer enough.
Elide said nothing more. Her eyes simply drifted toward the window, at the snow slowly and silently falling from the heavens.
“Are you going to stay quiet all night?” she asked, as Lorcan turned onto her street.
“No,” he replied, simply, even though he said nothing more.
“You’re mad,” she said.
“Why would I be mad?” he replied. “I’m not mad.”
“You sound mad,” she whispered.
Lorcan sighed. “I’m not mad, Elide, I just want to make sure you’re alright. You’re my best friend, I need you to be alright, so I’m here.” The Jeep idled in her driveway, but neither of them made a move to get out. Elide just stared at her hands in her lap. Lorcan took a deep breath and cut the engine. “Come on. Let’s go inside. You need to tell me what happened and I need a drink.”
He didn’t wait for her reply, just opened the door and was retrieving their bags as Elide slid down from the seat and made her way up to her front door. She unlocked it and was heading back towards her bedroom as Lorcan took the drinks into the kitchen. After kicking off her boots and grabbing an enormous, oversized hoodie - one that she’d stolen from Lorcan at some point in high school - her sock-covered feet were shuffling into the kitchen. Lorcan had already settled in the living room with a beer in hand, so Elide was surprised to find a full bottle of whiskey next to the wine on her counter.
“Looked like you needed something stronger,” he said, shrugging, refusing to meet her eyes even though the TV remained off.
“Don’t act like whiskey is for my benefit,” she said, even though she poured herself a shot and tossed it back before filling her wine glass. “You know I prefer tequila.”
Lorcan let out a humorless snort as Elide stumbled into the living room and settled on the couch beside him.
“So,” he began, clearing his throat. “What happened?”
Elide shrugged. “He came here, picked me up, we had dinner. He tried to come in, I told him he hadn’t been invited, that I wasn’t ready to take that step again, that I wanted to take things slow. He kept trying to come inside, but I kept telling him no. When he finally got the hint, he stormed off and drove away. After, of course, he called me a prude and an idiot, and thanked me for wasting his time, just like I always had.”
Lorcan’s jaw clenched, but he said nothing.
“Say it,” was all Elide said, after the silence filled the space between them.
“There’s nothing to say,” he said, cracking open the beer in his hand and putting it to his lips. After he’d drank deeply, he crushed the can and set it down on the side table next to him.
Those four, stupid words hung between them, regardless of the fact that neither of them had uttered them.
I told you so.
When Elide had called Lorcan on Christmas morning, he’d expected her to tell him some ridiculous story of something that one of their friends did after he’d left the bar on Christmas Eve. He expected her to wish him a Merry Christmas and ask what time he was planning to be at Rowan and Aelin’s for lunch.
So when she’d told him she bumped into her ex at the bar, Lorcan was quiet. When she told him she’d agreed to another date, Lorcan was silent as death.
Roland was an ass.
He didn’t deserve Elide.
He never had.
“I need you to say something,” Elide said, turning her eyes toward him.
“You need me to say something?” Lorcan asked, incredulously. “Want do you want me to say, El? I want to feel bad for you. I really fucking do, alright? But, I…”
“You what,” Elide breathed.
“I can’t,” Lorcan said, through gritted teeth. “I have no idea why you gave that jackass a second chance. I know that, you know that, it makes no sense to me! We did this same thing a year ago, El. Me, here with you, trying to put your heart back together after Roland was reckless with it!”
“He means something to me,” she said, looking down into her full glass. “He was my first, Lorcan, my first everything.”
Lorcan had to bite his tongue. He was well aware of everything Roland had been to Elide. He’d been around for years, in and out of Elide’s life, until he broke her heart last Christmas. He finally cleared his throat when he felt he was able to speak without snapping again. “I know. I know he was, El. But you promised. You promised you weren’t going to let him do this to you again. And the first opportunity he has, he comes right back and fucks with your head.”
Elide was silently brushing a thumb back and forth across her bottom lip. After a second, she looked up at him. “I loved him, Lor.”
The tears in her eyes nearly broke him.
Without a word, Lorcan wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her against him. Elide buried her face in his chest. “I know you did.”
Lorcan wanted to kill him, wanted to kick his ass for making Elide cry, something she’d promised him would never happen again.
“I’m sorry for snapping,” he said, quietly, once her sobbing grew into silent cries. “I just… I can’t see you like this. Especially when it’s because of some prick that doesn’t deserve you.”
Elide shook her head, but he knew she wasn’t disregarding what he’d said. She was just trying to get her head straight. “I just need to accept that I’m going to be a cat lady and die alone.”
Lorcan snorted. “You’re allergic to cats.”
“Then it’ll be an early death,” Elide said, voice muffled thanks to where her face was still pressed against his chest. She leaned back and sighed. “I got your shirt wet.”
Lorcan shrugged. “Not a big deal. And you’re not going to die alone. There’s someone out there who’s going to make you the happiest girl in the world.” He paused for a moment and made sure she was looking at him. “And it sure as hell won’t be Roland Havilliard.””
“Then who will it be?” she asked, with a humorless chuckle. “Do share your wisdom, if you know that fact to be true.”
Lorcan just shook his head as he watched her. If only she knew, if only he could tell her of what he would never tell her. Lorcan believed what he had said, that there was someone out there who would make her the happiest girl in the world.
Little did she know that he wished it were him.
He knew it wasn’t, though.
He wanted that person to be him, but Elide Lochan deserved better than a bastard who couldn’t control his temper, who drank too much and felt too little. Yes, he loved Elide, more than he could ever love anyone, ever again. But she deserved better than him.
So he’d take his love for her to the grave.

Valentines Day at the Avengers tower was a very quiet day, at least for you and Steve. Everyone had their own dates and plans for the day. Tony, of course, is vacationing somewhere romantic with Pepper. Clint was spending the day with his wife and family. Thor was out trying to woo Jane. And most surprising of all, Natasha and Bruce were having a lovely dinner together.
It was just you and Steve left in the tower to fight boredom and loneliness on this miserable holiday.
You were in your room laying on your bed with your head hanging over the side when you saw an upside-down Steve standing in front of you with his arms crossed, "What are you doing?" He chuckled.
"Absolutely nothing and it's killing me!" You let out dramatically.
Steve laughed and sat on the floor in front of you, "Can I do nothing with you?"
"Yes! Please!"
For a good thirty minutes, you and Steve sat on the floor of your bedroom playing hand games. You started with patty cake, then rock paper scissors, thumb war, you tried to teach him slide for a while but he wasn't getting it so you moved on to hot hands, oh man was that a bad idea. It was fine at first when you were the one trying to smack his hand but the second he went to hit yours he forgot about how strong he was and hit you a little too hard, "OW! I don't like this game anymore." You whined pulling your hands away from him.
Instantly feeling bad he held your hands and softly rubbed them with his thumb, "I'm so sorry Y/N!"
The both of you sat there for a while not even noticing your hands were still in his. "Why don't we go out and do something? Instead of staying here being bored out of our minds?" Steve suggested.
"Like what?"
"I don't know, explore the city?"
You thought for a second before you perked up with an idea, "Why don't you take me around Brooklyn and show me the places you used to go to? Most of it is still there."
He smiled, "I like that idea. Let's go." He stood up first finally letting your hands go, but not for long as he held one hand out to help you up from the floor. "I'm just going to put my shoes on then grab my bag so we can go." You said as he made his way out of your room.
When you were ready to go you met him by the front door. He had two helmets in his hand along with his keys, "Ready to go?" You looked at him smiling as you nodded your head, "Ready."
~~~~
You held onto him in the back of his motorcycle as he drove you over to Brooklyn. The first stop he made was in front of an old apartment building. Steve parked his motorcycle and begin taking his helmet off as you hopped off.
"Where are we?" You asked.
"Y/N, welcome to the birthplace of Steve Rogers." He said looking at the building with his hands on his hips.
"Birthplace? You mean the place you grew up in?"
"Oh no, I mean birthplace," He looked at you amused, "my mom didn't realize she was in labor until it was too late. She gave birth in front of her bedroom door."
"Wow you're mom must've been really tough to not know she was in labor."
"Yeah, she really was."
"I guess you got it from her Mr. I could do this all day." You mimicked his catchphrase causing him to laugh.
He walked you around his old neighborhood showing you his school, favorite dinners (or at least where they used to be), and the theater he would go to most often alone but on the rare occasion with Bucky on a double date.
"I forget you weren't always like this, a stud women chased after all the time." You joked.
"Well, I wasn't the best looking back then. Bucky- Well he was always the one getting women. He tried to help set me up with some but in the end, they were never interested."
"Well, they missed out on an amazing man." You looked up at him as the both of you stood in front of the abandoned theater.
His head hung down as he chuckled, "You mean the stud I am now?"
You smiled, "No. You don't need to be a stud to be an amazing man. Any woman would have been lucky to have you then or now. They were just too focused on looks to see that."
He wasn't quite sure what to say. You were such an amazing girl and no doubt attractive. He had always been so focused on Peggy that he didn't realize there was a girl for him in this time.
You both looked into each other's eyes smiling. For a quick second, he looked down at your lips then back up to your eyes. He didn't think you would notice but you did. Clearing your throat you looked back at the theater, "So Mr. Rogers if you were in the 40s right now where would you take a lady out on Valentine's day?"
"Well back then they used to have a fair on Valentine's day. They'd have rides, food stands, a fortune teller, and a photo booth. I went once on a double date with Bucky but my date left me halfway through, it was not fun." He let out a small laugh at the end.
"Let's do it." You said making your way back to the apartment complex where he left his motorcycle.
"What?" He caught up to you quickly.
"Let's give you the Valentine's Day fair you deserved."
"How?"
"There's a small amusement park not too far from here. They have rides and no doubt food stands. I'm sure they'll have a photo booth set up somewhere."
~~~~
"Welcome to Adventureland. Today tickets are half off for couples." The man at the booth greeted you both with a smile.
You grabbed Steve's hand happily, "Well it's a good thing we're a couple right Stevie?"
"Of course, darling." He said in an unconvincing tone wrapping his arm around your shoulders.
The man eyed you two for a second. Whether or not he
believed you, you weren't sure. He said nothing and gave you the price for the tickets. Before you can even reach for your wallet Steve grabbed his and paid the man. He handed you each a wristband that would give you access to the park.
Excited, you grabbed Steve's hand and ran into the park. He followed behind you laughing.
Gosh she's so darn adorable.
The amusement park wasn't as busy as you expected it to be. Most of the guests here were teenagers. Then there was you and a one hundred year old man in a 20/30 year olds body. You didn't care that you two were the oldest people there. You promised Steve you'd give him the Valentine's Day he deserved and you were sticking by your promise.
"So what shall we do first? Carousel, bumper cars, the spiney wanna be teacups- oh! Or the tunnel of love?" You said wiggling your eyebrows.
In that moment both of your stomachs growled.
"How about the restaurants?" Steve laughed.
"That might be a good start." You laughed along.
Neither of you even realized it but you were still holding onto his hand. As you walked to the nearest food place you're hands swung together in a child like way. When you walked into the restaurant there was a small line of people waiting to order. As the both of you stood in line you looked up at the menu together, still hand in hand. It wasn't until it was time to pay you both realized you'd been holding hands this whole time. You were going to reach for your wallet as Steve went for his when you tugged onto each other's hand. Quickly you let go and while your mind lingered on the feel of his hand in yours he took his wallet out first paying for both your meals. He thanked the cashier and took the receipt with the number of your order on it before leading you to an empty table.
"You paid for the tickets, I should've paid for the food." You frowned.
"Well you should've gotten to your wallet faster." He laughed at you and winked.
"That's not fair! I was... distracted."
"On what? My devilishly good looks?" He pretended to flip his hair causing you to laugh.
"Yes let's go with that."
You both ate in silence as you had both not rated since that morning and it was mid-afternoon. It was safe to say you were starving. As you and Steve got to your last bites you asked, "what should we do when we go back out?"
He leaned back into his chair thinking, "well we should start somewhere slow. We did just eat I don't want anyone getting sick out there."
"Right. Right. So... tunnel of love?" You raised an eyebrow as you took a sip of your drink.
He dropped his head laughing then nodded, "yes tunnel of love."
"Yes!!" You had only two bites of your food left so you quickly shoved it in your mouth then threw both your and Steve's trash away. He was barley understanding what was happening when you grabbed his wrist and pulled him along with you towards the door.
You were in line for the tunnel of love within 40 seconds of leaving the diner. Steve couldn't help but laugh, "Why are you so excited for this ride?"
"Umm hello!? Its Valentine's Day. This is THE Tunnel of Love. We would be missing out on a great opportunity if we didn't get on this ride today." You said as a matter of fact.
~~~~
When you exited the ride you both couldn't stop laughing, "That was the lamest ride I've ever been on." You were able to manage saying.
Steve nodded in agreement unable to say anything. You both finally calmed down taking some deep breaths. "Come on let's walk around and see what else we can do here." Steve nodded his head toward the other side of the park you had not explored yet. He put his arm around your shoulder as you two made your way to the other attractions.
"Come right up and test your strength!" You heard coming from the right of Steve. Peeking your head around him you gasped, "Oh my gosh, Steve you have to try that!"
"What? Why?"
"These games are also rigged so that strong men will never make it to the top. But you're not just strong your super human strong! You'll for sure beat the game."
Steve just shrugged her shoulders, "You convinced me." He let go of your shoulders dropping his arm to his side's then walked over to the man at the booth, "I'd like to take a crack at this game." Steve casually said.
The man looked a bit nervous, obviously knowing who Steve was and just how strong he could be. "Are you sure about that sir? There may be some other games you might find more fun than this boring old thing."
Steve just smiled at him overconfident, "This one looks just fine. How much to play?"
"Only $3 my good sir."
Without even looking down at his money he handed the man three dollar bills, then took the mallet getting ready to strike. Almost as if it were nothing Steve hit the button causing the bell to hit all the way to the top. A ding indicated Steve was 'Stronger than Captain America' or at least that's what the board said, but what does it know? It's just a board after all.
You watched him in amusement as he picked the biggest prize they had on display, a narwal stuffed animal the size of Steve's head.
He proudly walked back over to you, "Here you keep it."
"Thank you. What should we name it?" You asked as you both continued walking throughout the park.
This time Steve stuffed his hands into the pockets of his jeans, "Umm how about Twinkle. It looks like it has stars here on its tail." You turned the animal over proving him right. "Ok Twinkle it is."
As time went on and the food in your stomach settled you both moved onto better rides. The one you were both excited about was the bumper cars. You buckled twinkle up in the seat next to yours as you chased Steve around trying to crash into his car. Somehow in that tiny room you lost him and crashed into some teenagers. Then you felt something crash into your side. Sitting in the cart next to yours was Steve laughing mischievously. You were ready to chase after him when the ride ended.
You two started getting tired when the sun began to set. Instead of leading you to the parking lot Steve rushed you both over to the Ferris wheel insisting it would be the last ride of the night. When you were both strapped in you set Twinkle down between you both. Steve rest his arm around you as your compartment rose into the air. The higher up you went the colder it got. It didn't bother Steve but he could tell it bothered you. He felt your shivering grow the closer you got to the top. He pulled you in closer to him and rubbed your arm with his hand. When you reached the top your breath hitched at how beautiful the view was. You could see the lights of the amusement park being lit up as the sky turned into colors of oranges, pinks, and purples. By the time you reached the bottom the sun had completely set and the park was illuminated with street lights.
Steve hopped off first holding his hand out to help you. When you stepped down Steve didn't let your hand go, instead he interlocked your fingers together.
On your way back you spotted a small photo booth tucked away in one of the parks corners. Excited you started to tug in Steve's had with a wide smile, "Let's go this way!" You didn’t wait for his response when you turned directions toward the photo booth. He almost tripped over his own feet at the sudden change. Then without saying a word you pulled him into the booth with you. Taking advantage of his confusion you took your money out to pay for the photos. “Smile!” You said excitedly as the first of three pictures were taken. The photo booth was a bit old and didn’t have a screen to show you what the photos looked like right after they were taken.
You and Steve exited the booth excited to see your pictures. The first one you were smiling as Steve looked at you confused. The second photo he had his arm around your shoulder but his hands were making bunny ears as you both smiled. In the last photo you kissed Steve’s cheek. Sadly only one copy was printed, “You keep it. I’m sure we’ll take more in the future.” You said walking away.
He stood there and smiled to himself looking at the picture, “there definitely will be.”
Brooke running into JJ and reader now that they have been dating a while!??? Have no idea how this would go down but would love to see ur take on it
this is solely for the sweet anon who asked how i was doing, love you :)
-
brooke wasn’t in your major, meaning once jj broke up with her, you barely saw her. your sorority’s president, god bless her, swore you’d never work closely with phi mu strictly because of her, and you were equal parts amused and thankful.
one afternoon, jj was tired of studying and started to get antsy, so the two of you packed up your stuff in the library and decided to take a walk. cody was working, a rare afternoon shift, so you dropped your booksacks behind the info desk on the way out.
it was still chilly out, just starting to warm into spring, and you shivered a little, shoving your hands into your hoodie pocket. jj, never able to walk straight, bumped into you a few times before you exasperatedly took one of your hands out to hold his to help him.
he grinned sheepishly, “sorry.”
“don’t worry about it, bud,” you reassured him.
the library was on the edge of campus which was pretty abandoned, most people already gone for the evening except the few students walking to their night classes.
“feeling better?” you asked jj after about ten minutes.
nodding, he answered, “yeah, sorry to disrupt you, hope i didn’t knock you too much out of the zone.”
“not a disruption at all, i needed some fresh air too.”
jj stopped, his hand in yours pulling you to a stop too, and bent down to press a soft kiss to your forehead, “you’re incredible.”
blinking in surprise at the sudden compliment, your cheeks heated up, “yeah, well, don’t forget it.”
“i could never,” he said, dramatically placing a hand over his heart.
you laughed, leaning into his side, “wanna pick up some dinner from subway? we could bring some back to cody.”
“sounds good to me,” he shrugged, “i’ve got my wallet.”
turning around, the two of you started walking in the other direction back toward the subway you’d passed earlier in the walk. jj swung your hands between you playfully, and you giggled when he lifted them above your head.
he squeezed your hand a few times, fingers tapping on the back of your hands in a rhythm only in his head. you were deeply grateful every time jj held your hand, remembering the time you’d drunkenly passionately explained how in your mind it was peak romance.
by the time the two of you arrived at subway, it was dinnertime, and the small store was packed with on-campus students avoiding the caf. jj squeezed in behind you, leaning a lot of his weight into you to avoid being squished into the wall.
his arm wrapped around your waist, and you rested one of your hands on his forearm. jj’s arm tightened and pulled you back as someone pushed by, drink sloshing out of his cup that he’d for some reason chosen to not put a lid on.
jj leaned down to whisper in your ear, “that man woke up from his afternoon nap and chose violence.”
you laughed, “thank god i’m wearing black socks today, huh?”
“he got you?” jj asked, surprised.
“unfortunately, he did.”
jj made a face, “we’ll go home after this so you can change, yeah?”
“yeah, i’m tired of the library anyway,” you conceded, “could definitely use a study break.”
“we can watch a movie,” jj brightened, “they put some new ones on netflix.”
humming thoughtfully, you tightened your grip on his forearm, resting your head on his chest tiredly, “sounds great to me.”
the line shifted forward, and the two of you moved away from the wall, but jj stayed behind you, not that you were complaining much. what neither of you had noticed was brooke two spots in front of you, and when you moved forward away from the wall, she could see you.
you saw her first when she scoffed, catching your attention. narrowing your eyes at her, you leaned further into jj’s grip. whether it was a weird way to stake a claim or genuine recoil from how much you disliked her, you weren’t sure.
“i knew it,” she muttered, but you could tell she wasn’t trying to hide it.
that prompted jj to look over and he grimaced before looking down at you with a concerned look in his eyes. you remembered the last...confrontation...the three of you had when they originally broke up.
“honestly, it’s been months,” he whispered, “why’s she so bothered?”
you shrugged, “green isn’t her color.”
he laughed loudly, catching her attention again, and you tilted your head away so she couldn’t see your smile. the line started to move while she was focused on the two of you and the boy behind her coughed, “hey, pay attention.”
she glared at him, cheeks reddening, and turned away to order. brooke didn’t look at the two of you again as she got her food and sat down, facing away. by the time the two of you left, sandwiches in hand, she’d barely made a dent in her food, clearly trying to stall and wait you out.
jj grabbed your hand again as the two of you started walking back toward the library. after about five minutes he let out a long breath, “well, it wasn’t as awkward as i expected the first confrontation would be.”
“probably helped that there were people between us and in public.”
he shrugged, “fair. but we got the first one out of the way.”
“true. easier from here on out.”
squeezing your hand one last time as the two of you walked through the library door, jj agreed, “easier from here on out.”
chapter 3 — starting over
SUMMARY: Guinevere Bailey just moved to McKinney, TX in order to figure out her life. She meets Captain Hank Syverson at the local library, and she finds out she might have bitten off more than she can chew. PAIRING: Syverson x OFC WORD COUNT: 1394 A/N: holy shit! it’s been like 5 months! first of all, i’m so terribly sorry. i’ve been wretchedly depressed, and covid and grad school have simultaneously been beating the shit out of me with a wrench. or a lead pipe. not sure yet. either way. let me know what you think. i’m a bit rusty on this story, but i still want to at least finish it. not much of an idea where it’s gonna go. any thoughts? anything you’d like to see? lmk! Captain Henry Syverson Jr. had never felt more like shit than he did now. He stared at his phone with a scowl on his face, still covered head to toe in soot.
hope you’re okay. i’m headed home.
He’d screwed up the date he was having with a girl he thought was… well, incredibly pretty and incredibly funny. Sy closed his phone and sat it on his bed, going to his bathroom to wash off the remains of the barn that had caught fire last night. The barn had belonged to his mama and pop, and when he’d seen the smoke, he knew the animals hadn’t been moved out yet. Most of last night had been moving the animals out as fast as they could. So far, they’d only lost a hog and a calf in the fire, and a few were burned. It was...not bad, all things considered.
He still hadn’t had the nerve to text Guinevere back. He hadn’t had the nerve to go and see her either at the library. She most likely thought he’d stood her up, but the exact opposite was true. Sy stepped under the hot water, and he sighed as the drain tried to handle the near black liquid pooling down. He scrubbed his head as best he could. His hair was starting to grow back, already longer than he was used to. However, he wanted to grow it out. He missed his shaggy curls. The desert didn’t allow for that much.
He washed up as best as he could, and he realized his need for new shampoo and body wash since he smelled like a damn Bath & Body Works store. God love his mother, but she didn’t know what he liked anymore. And as lovely as lavender smelled, Sy didn’t want to smell like that. No, he much preferred his lovers smell like that.
With a sigh, he stepped from the shower and dried off, looking over himself in the mirror. A few scars littered his chest, a few bullet wounds and the like. They added to his look. Or so he hoped.
He grabbed his phone and finally made the plunge, texting Gwen with all the humility he could muster.
I can explain. She typed back for a few moments, but then the typing bubbles went away. They started up again a moment later, and that continued for a few more minutes. Sy was practically having heart palpitations.
let’s hear it.
Our barn caught on fire last night, and I was out pulling the animals out. I completely forgot to text you. I’m sorry.
She started typing again. He didn’t have to wait long for this one. oh my god oh my god i’m so sorry! i must seem like such a jerk right now! ugh. i’m so sorry a thousand times over. do you want to reschedule?
Sy smiles. She’s sweet. Sounds good. I’ll be there this time. Hell or high water. Same place, same time tonight?
perfect. see you then, sy.
She sent a little heart emoji after that, and Sy was over the moon. Hopefully, nothing would ruin tonight. Then again, knowing Sy’s luck...
He made it there on time, meaning 5 minutes before. He got their table, set everything just right, and he waited. One minute before, Gwen stepped inside looking like the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. The mustard colored dress she wore perfectly complemented those eyes of hers. Took his breath away.
She looked nervous, and she was. However, he stood and waved a hand over to her. She beamed at him, trying to look like she wasn’t running towards him. It looked more like a brisk half-jog, which Sy appreciated. They were both excited. In their own ways.
He stood as she got closer, going around to pull out her chair for her. She flashed him a quick smile, and she sat. The tips of her ears were bright red. Sy had done his duty in making her blush, so he returned to his chair and sat across from her.
“I am so sor—”
“I am so sor—”
They both spoke at the same time, and they both laughed in tandem. “You go first,” Gwen said, brushing her hair from her face and putting her chin in her hands.
“I am so sorry, Guinevere. I should have texted or called you sooner to let you know what had happened. I wasn’t thinkin’.”
Gwen was silent for a while, and that made Sy fidget. He wasn’t fond of silences he deemed awkward, and this was one such silence. The Captain in him wanted to continue speaking, to talk and talk and talk until she had finally gotten it into her head what he meant when he hadn’t messaged her. But she spoke before he could actually say anything else.
“Nothing to be sorry about, Sy. Not like you set fire to your own barn. Unless you did, and if you did, I’m required to report you to the authorities.” They both laugh, and Gwen reaches out to take his hand across the table.
“Sorry for the miscommunication,” she breathed, finally. “Do over?”
“Do over. Howdy.” He raises their hands to shake. “My name is Hank Syverson Jr. But you can call me Sy. I’m a Captain in the U.S. Army. Who in the world are you, young lady?”
She laughs and shakes his hand right back, thumb brushing along the rough texture of his hands. “I am Guinevere Bailey, local librarian and nuisance. But you can just call me Gwen. Or nuisance. Again, I answer to both.”
It only goes up from there. Turned out that the army captain and the librarian shared a deep love of Tolkien and fantasy series of all sorts. He had a deep affection for video games, and though their tastes differed — he preferred combat heavy games and Gwen preferred story driven games — they both agreed that video games were quite fun no matter the genre. They laughed. They shared dessert. They lost track of time. They were gently reminded of the restaurant’s hours, and Gwen started to pull out her wallet to help pay for her dinner.
“Now now, little lady, let me get this one.”
“Only if you promise I can get the next one.”
Now, Hank was a chivalrous man, an old fashioned man. But he also never said no to a free meal, and in a refreshing turn for Guinevere, he said — “Deal.”
She smiled. “I really like you Hank Syverson Jr. I really, really like you.”
“I like you too Guinevere Bailey. Now c’mon. We’re wearin’ out our welcome.”
They left the restaurant, and the stars twinkled above them, cradling a bright full moon. Sy took a chance and linked their arms together, much to Gwen’s delight. She took his arm and leaned into him. They walked around historic downtown for a bit, continuing to chat and observing the old, beautiful buildings. By the time they’d made it back to their cars, the time was nearly midnight. They stood outside Gwen’s car, and he looked down at her, tall and towering.
“I had a nice night tonight, Gwen.”
“Me too, Sy. We should do it again sometime soon.”
“We should, and I should start goin’ to the library more often. I think I still got some books that are overdue from the fifth grade.”
“You’re going to get in trouble, Sy.”
“As long as I’m just in trouble with you. Night, Gwen.” Then, “can I kiss you?”
The question surprises her. Not many ask her. So she simply nods before letting out a resounding “yes. I’d like that.”
He leans down slowly, and Gwen’s lips part at the sight. He descends and places the softest kiss right there on her cheek, his beard tickling her jaw. She laughs at his tease, and he pulls back with a wink.
“Didn’t think you meant it like that, Syverson.”
“Hey, I never specified where. Buy me dinner first, and we’ll see where it goes.”
They both laugh again, and they linger. Neither wants to go home. Neither wants to stay. It’s kind of chilly, but neither will say anything if they can help it. It’s Gwen who breaks the silence, though.
“One more for the road? The other cheek’s getting jealous.”
“Yes ma’am. Whatever you say.”
"I’m so glad that they’re still doing this. Keep calm. Carry on," Kiara said to the boys as she stuffed the change from their tickets back into her wallet.
It would have been an understatement to say that JJ and Pope hadn’t been eager to attend the outdoor movie night hosted by the Island Club. In fact, they'd spend thirty minutes listing all the things they would rather do when Kiara proposed the idea. She'd let them grumble about going for the better part of an hour since she knew there was no way the pogues would let her go to something on Figure Eight alone. Pogues always had each other's backs, always. Kiara figured the least she could do was pay their entry fee. Plus, she knew JJ and Pope didn't exactly have extra cash laying around for movie nights.
She would have dragged all three of the boys with her but John B hadn't been back to the chateau all day. Since the cell towers were still down thanks to the hurricane, she could only guess where he was.
"Welcome to the summer movie series. All proceeds go to...." The announcer's voice boomed over the loudspeakers as Kiara lead the boys to an empty space in the middle of the crowd.
"Back to OBX life. You know? Aren’t you guys glad that I made you come?" She really didn't have to ask, she was already sure of their answer.
"Ecstatic," Pope responded, his tone clearly lacking enthusiasm.
"My couch was pretty comfy, I’ll be honest," JJ echoed.
"We’re out of the green zone, man," Pope leaned over, commenting to JJ, out of earshot of Kiara. She didn't know about Topper's boat and Pope wasn't really interesting in bringing her in as another accessory to the crime.
"Dude, tranquilo, okay?" JJ whispered back.
"We're in the middle of Kooklandia. This is the last place I wanted to be."
"Shut up, Pope," JJ snapped, his wide eyes with warning. This was Kiara's thing, they weren't gonna let the Shakespearesque fued between Kooks and Pogues ruin her fun.
-
"Hey, uh…can I get two Pepsis, pleases?" Kiara asked the employee currently manning the snack bar.
"Sure," he replied.
Kiara slide the money for the sodas across the counter and took the cold drinks, watching Rafe slowly approaching from out of the corner of her eye.
"Hey, Kie," Rafe said. Kie felt her pulse spike at a nickname he'd originally given her. "Hey, what’s up? How are you?"
"I’m fine," she replied, intentionally angling her body away from him, her gaze resting anywhere but on him. For someone whose presence she uses to be able to relax in, now the sight of Rafe put her on edge.
"Good, good. Um...Tell your boy that we know what he did." Rafe held her stare and Kiara couldn't stop her lip from curling up in contempt.
"Sorry, what boy are you talking about?"
"Uh, he’ll know." Rafe smiled as if this conversation was bringing him some wicked sense of pleasure.
Rafe opened his mouth as to say something else but Kiara turned away from him. "Bye," he called to her as she walked away.
"Douche," Kiara said, loud enough that she was sure he would still hear her. She threw a glance over her shoulder, feeling Rafe's eyes still watching her.
-
Kiara handed Pope a Pepsi. "Just saw Rafe, and he said, and I quote, 'Tell your boy that we know what he did.' What is that?" She finished, handing JJ the second soda.
"Um...Where is he?" JJ asked back.
"Right there." Pope and JJ's heads turned around to look with her.
"Great the whole death squad," Pope said.
JJ grabbed the top of Pope's head, knocking his snapback off as he forced it forward. "Don’t stare, bro," JJ paused. "Just warning you, bro. If they corner me, I’m coming out swinging, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah," Pope agreed.
"Slice and dicin’. I’m on edge right now, okay? If that doesn’t work, I got this right here." JJ held up his worn backpack.
Fucking hell, Kiara thought. He brought the gun.
"Yeah, yeah. So, we just gotta stay in the group. They can’t come get us if we’re in the group," Pope remarked.
"Like a school of fish.”
"Stay in the school. Can’t leave the school. Stay in school," Pope repeated to himself.
"I’m sorry JJ…" Kiara interrupted. "Please tell me that you did not bring a gun here. JJ, there are kids."
"No Kie! I didn’t bring the gun. Everything’s fine, okay?" JJ assured, his frantic tone betraying him.
"Oh wow, thank you. That’s really convincing. I love that JJ." Kiara looked from JJ to Pope, trying to assess what kind of trouble they’d caused now. "Founding principle, you guys. No secrets amongst Pogues. What is Rafe talking about?"
Pope leaned it, bringing his face closer to Kiara's. "Kie, it might go down tonight."
"What does that mean?" Their vagueness was making Kiara extra suspicious. "'Might go down tonight.' What did y’all do?"
The boys look at each other, neither of supplying any answers to Kiara's questioning.
"Deny, deny, deny," JJ said quietly to Pope under his breath.
The opening score of The Addams Family cracked through the weathered speakers forcing an end to the conversation. A memory popped into Kiara’s head before she had time to stop it. This was Sarah Cameron’s favorite movie. Sarah used to mouth the lines along with the actors every time they watched it together.
There were a lot of glamorous parts of being best friends with the Kook-queen Sarah Cameron. When they walked down the shiny hallways of the Kook Academy literally arm-in-arm peoples' heads turned and watched them go by. All the mean girls with their once snarky remarks were suddenly complimenting Kiara's "unique style," begging her to tell them where she bought her clothes. (In truth, most of it was actaully thrifted since that was much more eco-friendly.) Plus there was the way Sarah swiped her Daddy's black card without a second thought. Kiara’s family lived on Figure Eight, they were a part of the Island Club but they would never have the kind of east coast old money the Cameron's had.
It wasn’t something Kiara usually minded. The whole money thing. Kiara never saw herself as less than because she didn’t wear a watch that cost as much as college tuition on her wrist. But it was more than that: Kiara never really saw herself as much of a Kook to begin. She didn’t want that lifestyle. She never had. It was her parents who pushed it on her. Her mom had grown up under the crystal chandeliers and ever-watchful eyes. She’d debuted into Outer Banks high society at the age of seventeen like every Kook at that age still did. An action which Kiara scoffed at. Her mom was fully prepared to be another success story of the ring-before-spring pipeline, returning to the Outer Banks after four years of college with an MRS degree and a husband who would be balding by his early forties.
But in a Hollywood-worthy meet-cute that involved one drunk sorority girl and her vodka-induced need for pancakes, Mike Carrera stumbled into Anna's life.
Mike Carrera was the opposite of Anna in every way that counted. His whole life had been hard work and grit, fighting for the things that were rightfully his and taking them when people still refused to hand them over. He had a pipe dream of owning his own restaurant, a borderline fantasy that he was dead-set on making sure came true. Anna loved him and he loved her right back. They eloped to Vegas the week after graduation even though own Anna’s mother was halfway through planning the wedding. They bought cheap rings and a second-hand dress since they were still living paycheck to paycheck. Though the bright lights of Vegas had made the impromptu wedding seem a bit more glamorous than it really was, they both knew deep down their love was the real thing. They promised each other till death do us part and meant it.
When Anna found out she was pregnant, she talked Mike into going back to the Outer Bank. Anna swore up and down the move was only so her parents could help with the baby. They'd live on the cut, work for what they deserved and be happy. Then Anna's parents bought them a house on Figure Eight as a wedding gift and Sunday dinners at the Island club became protocol. Anna slipped back into her life as a Kook and brought Mike with her. When the restaurant turned into the tourist hot spot, the zeros in their bank accounts started growing. The Carrera's got rich but their money could never compete with the trust-fond generational wealth of their fellow Kooks.
The Outer Banks only had one elementary school. All the kids on the island were thrown together at an age where no one yet realized the lines between the haves and have nots. Fifth grade was when it got messy. Every fall the class size heading to the Kildare County Middle School dropped by half when all the Kooks transferred to St. Andrews “Kook” Academy. A breeding ground for Ivy-league-bound eighteen-year-olds who lived with the cushions of their parents' bank accounts.
Kiara begged her parents not to make her go to the Kook Academy. She would have rather died than leave her best friends, Bea and Joey, who were both Pogues and staying at KDMS. She didn't realize that middle school would rip the three of them apart. By eighth grade, Kiara had her new friends. Pope Heyward, John B. and JJ Maybank, but he still went by Junior back then. Even if they were bothered by Kiara's status as half-Kook, in the same way Bea and Joey had been, they never showed it.
Mike and Anna didn't see the need to send Kiara to St. Andrews if she didn't want to go but as high school inched closed with every year, the whispers about the Kook in public school grew louder. The summer before freshman year, her parents offered her a deal - though it was hardly a fair one in Kiara's mind. She could either stay at Kildare County High School but she'd have to work in the restaurant in her free time or she could go to St. Andrews with complete freedom for a year. Kiara knew her parents wanted her to transfer so she caved and agreed to a year at St. Andrews to make them happy. Anna prayed her daughter would find her people at St. Andrews and that one year would turn into four but Kiara knew she had already found her people and was counting down the days till she could go back to them. It was only when Sarah Cameron decided the new girl might be cool that Kiara stopped marking each passing day with a big red x.
-
There was less than a week left in their Christmas break and Kiara was seated across from Sarah at the Cameron's dining room table bent over her practice problems for Mr. Harrings' freshman science. He infamously gave out the hardest pop quiz of the year the first day back after break and Kiara's grade couldn't take her failing it.
"What’s avocado’s number?” Sarah asked, looking up from her paper, her pen frozen in midair.
“What’s what?” said Kiara, thoroughly confused at Sarah’s question.
“You know,” Sarah paused, scanning Kiara’s face for any sign of understanding. “Avogadro’s number. Some kid in my class thought the dude’s name was avocado so we’ve been calling it avocado’s number since.”
“Ah, Avogadro’s number,” Kiara repeated, shifting her papers around until she found the one with all the formulas and constants written on it. “Six point zero two two one four zero seven six times ten to the twenty-second power.”
Sarah punched the numbers into her calculator. “Thanks, babes.”
“Of course.”
Rafe’s heavy footsteps carried through the Cameron’s massive house announcing his arrival home. He strolled into the room, a thick stack of papers in one hand and a garment bag draped over the opposite arm.
“Hey loser,” Sarah said, not inspired enough by her brother's presence to look up from her work.
“Hi Rafe,” Kiara echoed. "Where you been?"
"Being Ward's errand boy. I forgot the key to his office where I was supposed to drop off this contract so he's gonna kill me for that. But," Rafe paused digging into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet pouch. "Merry late Christmas," he finished, handing the bag to Kie. "I saw it and I thought you'd like it."
Kiara reached into the pouch pulling out a small enamel pin of the earth, shaped into a heart with the word "love" in silver written over it. Kie smoothed her thumb over the cold metal.
"You know since you're gonna save the planet and everything," Rafe added.
"Thank you. I love it!" Kiara jumped up from her chair, throwing her arms around his waist wrapping him a hug.
"No problem, Kie." Rafe said.
"Hey, I'm trying to save our planet too." Sarah pipped up.
"Shut up, Sarah," Rafe cracked. "I gave you your Christmas present last week."
Sarah stuck her tongue out at him, Rafe doing the same in return.
"What are you guys working on?" Rafe asked.
"Science," Kiara replied, reaching down to grab her backpack from underneath the table.
"Is that for Mr. Harrings' class?"
"Yeah. Yeah, it is," Kie said, half distracting by trying to decide which spot to put her new pin in.
"I think I might still have my old test from that class if you want them.”
Sarah's head snapped up at the offer. "No way."
"Sound any more surprised, Sarah. I was offering them to Kiara anyway, snob," Rafe shot back.
"I'll share," Kie assured her best friend.
Kiara followed Rafe up the grand staircase, flopping on Rafe's bed while he searched for his old work.
"Henry Spiegel was talking about taking you to a he formal in the locker room before we left for break," Rade relied from inside his closet.
"Isn't he the freshman who made varsity lacrosse?" Kiara asked back. She contemplated the idea of going to St. Andrews' Winter Formal with him. Henry was nice enough, plus he was pretty good-looking. She could stand going with him.
"I told him if I found out he'd asked you, I'd make sure he missed the next three games because of a black eye."
"Rafe."
"What? Do you really think I'm gonna let some dweeb with half a brain who only wants to get in your pants take my little sisters to formal?"
"Who am I supposed to take?” She shot back.
“I don’t know. Not him,” Rafe said, emerging, a small stack of papers in hand.
“You know Denny asked Sarah last week.”
“I know.”
Kiara paused, “You will you take?”
Rafe shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. Maybe Ashely M. Seniors don’t really go to the actual dance.”
Kie took the pages of old test for Rafe’s outstretched arm and riffled through them. His name was scribbled on the top of each one in his messy handwriting.
Her eyes drifted up to the Duke basketball poster in the corner of Rafe’s room.
“When do you hear from them?” Kie asked.
“March,” said Rafe, his voice void of emotion.
“I know you’ll get in.”
"My dad'll make sure of it.” Rafe sat down on the bed next to Kiara.
“You don’t know that.”
“I found a card addressed to Ward from the Dean of Student last week thanking him for 'the generous donation from such a valued alumni.'”
Kie's head dropped to rest on Rafe’s shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, well he’s a dick.” Rafe’s phone buzzed and he pulled it out of his pocket, reading the text on the screen. “I gotta go. I told the boys we’d go hit at the Club tonight.”
“Thanks again for these.” Kie held up the papers. “And for the pin," she added.
“Mr. Harrings always includes the names of the scientists from the unit as bonus questions. Don’t forget to look those up,” Rafe said as he stood up from the bed. "See you around, Kie." He placed a small protective kiss on her forehead before he headed back downstairs.
"JJ?" Pope slapped JJ's shin to get his attention.
"What?" JJ whispered back over the sounds of the movie.
"I gotta take a piss.”
"Hold it."
"I can’t hold it. I drank too much soda."
"It’s too exposed. They’ll totally see us."
"I gotta go," Pope pleaded. He peered behind him to see Rafe, Topper, and Kelce still parked in the same spots at the back of the crowd. "They’re blocking the bathrooms," Pope added.
JJ looked around, thinking up a Plan B. "Alright. Come here. I know where.”
"Hey, where y’all going?" Kiara asked, turning her attention away from the movie.
"We gotta wring it out," JJ responded deadpan.
"What? You gonna hold it for each other," Kiara questioned, disgusted at the thought.
JJ shrugged off the comment and lead Pope through the crowd, the two of them ducking behind a large oak tree.
Kiara turned back to the movie playing on the giant screen, leaving the boys to their own devices. Besides, they wouldn't dare start something with all the people around. They were idiots but they knew better than that.
"Crap," Kiara cursed under her breath when Rafe trailed by Topper and Kelce brushed by her, heading in the same direction Pope and JJ had went. She watched their figures disappear behind the screen before she jumped up from her seat.
JJ's gun, the thought flew her mind.
She picked up his backpack with no intention to use it but better safe than sorry. Especially when it came to those Kooks in particular.
"Hey, kick his ass, Top!" Kiara heard Rafe yell as she rounded the corner.
Kiara felt a full-fledged panic run through her body as she took in the sight. Kelce had pinned JJ's arm behind his back and was Rafe pounded his fist into JJ’s face. A foot away, Pope was barely holding off Topper. Whatever Pope and JJ had done had obviously crossed a line.
Kiara ran in without another thought, swinging JJ's backpack in front of her. "Let go of him, Topper! Fascist asshole!" She screamed at him.
Topper grabbed the bag from her, ripping it out of Kiara's hand and throwing it aside. Kiara jumped on Topper's back, desperate to distract him.
"Hey listen, Pope," Topper yelled over the sounds of the movie. "All you gotta do is accept a little personal responsibility."
"Screw you, kook," Pope spit back.
Kiara felt arms wrap around her waist, yanking her off of Topper. The too-familiar scents of Rafe's cologne filled her nose and his breath was hot on her cheek.
She kicked her legs struggling against him, "Let go of me, Rafe."
"Stay out of this, Kiara," he warned, tossing her onto the ground. His gaze fixed on her for a second before turning away. Kiara swore she saw a look of guilt flash across Rafe's face, wordlessly apologizing for tossing her away so harshly but she didn’t have time to think about that while her boys were still in trouble.
"Kie! You okay?" Pope yelled, struggling against Topper who had wrapped his arm around Pope's neck.
"Come on, man. Just admit it," Topper shouted. "Admit you did it, bitch!"
JJ's backpack had conveniently landed close to where Kiara lay. She rolled over, pushing herself onto her knees and crawling over to the backpack. She riffled through it, her hand landing on the cold mental of the gun.
"You don't mess with me, Pogue! You hear me?" Topper continued. Kiara looked up at Topper's face which showed no signs of mercy. Meanwhile, Rafe's fist smashed into JJ's face again and again. The situation was getting worse by the second. “I'm gonna give you one chance. One chance, Pope. One chance. Come on! One!"
Kiara dropped the gun back into the backpack pulling out JJ's lighter instead, two Js craved onto the surface. She had to go big to stop Rafe, Topper and Kelce. Kiara crawled over to the edge of the sheet the movie was being projected off. Fuck, this has to work.
"Finish him off, Top!" Rafe directed.
Kie flicked on the lighter, the wind blowing out the flame the first few times. Her hands were shaking as she grabbed the edge of the sheet and held the blue flame up to it. The fire lit up her face as it took hold, spreading faster than she had expected. The crowd yelped, scrambling away as the orange flames climbed toward the sky.
"Guys! Fire!" Rafe yelled, taking in the sight.
"Get off of him!" Kie pushed Topper away from Pope who fell to the ground gasping for air. "Kelce, let go of JJ!"
"Let's get out of here," Rafe started, fleeing the scene. The other Kooks not far behind him.
"You good?" Kiara asked Pope helping him off the ground. "We're okay." She assured. Her heart was racing, her hands still shaking.
"You're a freakin' idiot," Pope responded.
"I saved your ass. Come on." Kiara threw her arm around Pope's shoulder, leading him away.
The sounds of the film continued to echo over the speakers as the sheet burned to ash behind them.
-
Kiara sat slumped against the wall of the St. Andrews hallway that lead into the cafeteria. The frill of her $200 dress fanned out around her. The dress, in her opinion, had been a colossal waste of money but had Sarah actually squealed when Kiara walked out of the fitting room in it. Kiara had tugged at the awkward way the skirt st on her hips but Sarah wouldn’t shut up about how perfectly the blue color fit the Winter Wonderland theme so Kiara bought it. Now, the sequins itching against her collarbone were just annoying her and Kiara couldn’t help scratching at them, making the already red marks on her skin even angrier. She was so fucked. Denny had pulled out a flash during pictures and somehow it kept ending up in Kiara's hands. The whole dance thing had Kiara incredibly anxious so she kept taking sips of the flash to keep her self busy. First during pictures, then during dinner, and in the limo on the way to the school. Now the flask was lying empty on the floor next to her and her nerves were no less settled.
She longed for her pogues so much the pain of missing them made her stomach hurt. Well, that or the alcohol. At that moment, she would have given anything to be back with them. Back with Pope and his overly nervous tendencies, back with John B. and his ideas that usually lead them into trouble, back with JJ and his flirtatious banter that left her blushing a lot more than she cared to admit. They were her family, where she belonged. Not in the gated communities of Figure Eight with mansions so big they had rooms no one entered for weeks. This whole year had been a mistake. She couldn't stand the fakeness of everybody and everything that came as a side effect to bank accounts with the kind of zeros that could seriously help if the 1% gave up being so selfish. Even Sarah's save-the-sea-turtles-with-men façade was fading away revealing another rich kid who didn’t give a shit about who she hurt.
The doors of the cafeteria swung open, the bass of the DJ's music filling the previously silent hallway. Kiara looked up to find Rafe jogging down the hall to her.
"What are you doing out here?" He asked, sliding down the way to sit next to her.
"The room kept spinning and...uh...I thought I might throw up so I went to find a bathroom," Kiara answered.
"You know the bathrooms are on the other side of the school?"
Kiara giggled which turned into a little burb which made her giggle even more.
"Jesus, Kiara. How drunk are you?" Rafe picked up the flask from the ground. He could smell the alcohol on her breath without even getting closer over. “Who's is this?"
Kiara paused for a moment, trying to remember. "Denny's."
"Sarah's date, Denny?"
Kiara nodded her head.
"Fuck," Rafe muttered. "Okay, let's get you out of here before any of the chaperons see and write you up." He stood up and held out both hands to held Kiara to her feet too.
Kiara pulled herself, leaning against Rafe for stability. The doors swung open again and Rafe's date marched into the hallway.
"Ugh, thank God. There you are. This dance is so lame. C'mon, we're all going to Joey's."
"I'm not coming. I have to take my sister home. She's totally trashed."
The girl's eyes moved over Rafe's face, landing on Kiara. "No," she corrected. "You're my date. You have to come with me."
"Did you not just hear me? I'm taking my sister home," Rafe replied.
"Are you kidding me? She's not even your real sister. She's hardly even a real Kook. I bet she's just using Sarah and you for your family's money. Just look at her dress. It's the same one every other wannabe trying-to-hard freshman has on. Pathetic."
Rafe pulled Kiara closer into him, wrapping an arm around her shoulder protectively. "You can fucking leave," Rafe spit back. "I don't wanna hear you ever talk about my family like that again."
The girl rolled her eyes. "Whatever. I was gonna hook up with Brandan tonight anyway. He's way hotter than you." She spun on her, stalking off in the same direction she had come.
Kiara looked up at Rafe, her bottom lip shaking as tears welled in her eyes. "Are you mad at me?" She asked.
Rafe laughed. "Of course not, Kie. Ashley can go fuck herself. Or she can go fuck Brandan. I don't really care." He wiped away the tear that had slide down Kiara's cheek. "Let's go find Sarah so I can take you both home."
-
Sarah was sitting on her date's lap back inside the cafeteria turned South Pole for the night, laughing loud enough at Denny’s shitty jokes that it was throughly annoying everyone around her.
"Get up Sarah," Rafe commanded.
Sarah surprised at Rafe's sudden presence scrambled off her date's lap. Rafe reached down and grabbed a fistful of Denny's shirt. He cocked his arm back and swung his fist straight into Denny's nose which gave a definitive crack on impact. Sarah let out a gasp and rushed forward.
"What the fuck?" She screamed at Rafe, shoving him off her date.
"You're date's an ass. Kie's completed wasted thanks to him" he said to Sarah. "Let's go. I'm taking you both home."
Sarah glanced at Kiara, who was standing slightly behind Rafe feeling both embarrassed at how much she had drank and grateful for Rafe's protectiveness.
"But I wanna go to the afterparty," Sarah protested. "She has you." Sarah's eyes locked with Kiara and Kiara's heart sank. She could tell her "best friend" wasn't about to give up the rest of her night just because she was nervous and had drunk too much.
Kiara shifted awkwardly on her feet. Sarah could have a least pretended to be conflicted, considered missing the party for a second. God, Kiara missed the unwavering faithfulness of her pogues.
Kiara tugged on Rafe's hand and he glanced over his shoulder at her. "It's fine," she slurred. She really needed out of this itchy disaster of dress as soon as possible.
"You're a really great friend," Rafe said to Sarah.
"Whatever," Sarah replied, her voice almost mimicking the way Rafe's date had said the same words. "Let's go find some ice for your nose, Denny."
-
They had found the gold. It was fifty feet down a well under an ax-murders house no less but they'd fucking found it. John B's crazy plan had worked and all they needed to do was get the gold out, a job which had effectively been delegated to Pope. Of course, first they had to wait for John B to get back from his fishing trip with Ward Cameron, some twisted form of pseudo father-son bonding. What was it with men and finishing? Couldn’t they pick a sport that didn’t actively destroy the environment?
Pope sat atop the kitchen counter, a pencil tucked behind his ear, his mouth moving as he made silent calculations. JJ stood in the doorway of the chateau, dripping water from the hot tub onto the floor. Kiara had thrown off the couch cushions and was rifling through the desk draws, slamming each one with frustration when they didn't hold what she was looking for. Kiara noticed this morning that a pin was missing from her backpack. It didn’t seem like a big deal but with every passing second her panic escalated.
“What are you looking for, bro? I swear this house is like one of those Where’s Waldo? books.” JJ asked Kiara.
“Did you just make a reference to a book, JJ?” Pope chimed in from across the room.
“Just because I chose not to read, doesn’t mean I can’t Pope,” JJ replied.
“Both of you are idiots. It’s a picture book anyway, you don't read it. Can you help me find my pin, please? It's the one I've always had on my backpack. The earth, shaped like a heart," Kie explained.
"Right," Pope replied, sliding off the counter where he was sitting. “Why do you care about it so much anyway?”
“It was a gift."
“From who?”
“From someone at the Kook Academy.”
“Sarah?”
“No.”
“You had other friends there?” JJ mocked.
Kie hesitated. “Fine, it was actually from Rafe as a Christmas present.”
JJ and Pope automatically stopped and looked up at each other.
“Bro, please tell me this isn’t the same Rafe who almost beat Pope’s face in last week."
“It’s not about Rafe. It’s about the pin,” Kie said.
“That’s from Rafe,” Pope finished.
“You guys weren’t there. You don’t get it. Whatever," she huffed. “Don’t help me find it then.”
“No, please Kie. Enlighten us," the sarcasm dripped off JJ's voice.
“I said you don’t have to help,” Kie repeated.
“Hey Kiara,” Pope said, grabbing her wrist. He was always the first to tell when something was off with her.
Kiara shrugged him off, wiping away her tears with her tshirt hem before the other pogues saw them.
“There was just this time,” she started, still overturning books like the pin might have been under there. “At a dance. This senior called me a fake Kook. She said my dress looked tacky like I was trying way too hard to fit but I would never fit in because I’d always be a fucking Pogue. Which of course I don’t wanna be a Kook, I was just playing dress-up for the year to please my parents and it’s like she saw straight through. Rafe was there. Like an older brother. Told her to go fuck herself. That if she ever talked about me like that again, he’d tell the whole she had an std.” Kie paused to wipe her runny nose. “He was basically my family so when Sarah dropped me like I was nothing I was sure that meant Rafe didn’t think I was worth his time anymore too. I never reached out to him again and now he just looks at me the same way he looks at every other Pogue.”
Pope cleared his throat, clearly mildly uncomfortable with Kiara’s sudden expression of emotion. It was an almost unspoken rule among the four of them that they didn’t talk about Kie’s kook year. It had sucked, bottom line. She’d shown back up the summer after ninth grade and it was the four of them again just like middle school. No one had the guts to ask about anything that had happened that year so it never got brought up.
JJ couldn't stop himself from remembering what Rafe had said at Midsummers. Tell Kiara she looks pretty hot for a Pogue. Fucking jackass. If he'd been like a brother to Kie, of course he'd know just how to hit her where it hurt.
JJ clinched his fist, wishing security hadn't pulled him away before he'd gotten a chance to swing at Rafe that night. “I still hate him,” JJ announced. “The entire Cameron family thinks they're the shit because they eat from golden spoons or something."
"The expression is born with a silver spoon in their mouth but JJ's right. All Kook’s suck," Pope added.
Rafe had wrestled off Kiara's heels after she almost face-planted in the school parking lot on the way to Rafe's truck thanks to them. He'd gotten up her all the back to the Cameron's house and in the front door successfully without her throwing up. Rafe tried to get Kiara to walk up the stairs but she'd sat down on the bottom declaring she would just sleep there so Rafe had delicately thrown her over his shoulder and didn't put her down until he dropped her on Sarah's bed.
Kiara closed her eye instantly and hummed softly, pleased with the comfortable spot she'd landed.
"No sleeping yet. You gotta drink some water first. Hold on."
Rafe dashed across the hall to his own room and grabbed the bottle of ibuprofen from his bathroom for Kiara in the morning. He also snatched the half-drunk water off his nightstand. It wasn't the best option but it was something.
"Okay, okay. Sit up," he said to Kiara, setting the water and medicine down on the bedside table.
Kiara grumbled but pushed herself upright until her back was against the headboard.
"I'm so happy you're my big bro," she said, reaching out her hand to tousle Rafe's hair. "It's always just been my mom and dad and me. And my turtle, Leo, before I lost him." Kiara felt tears wetting her cheeks again at the thought of her lost pet. "I just thought he might wanna play in the yard but then he ran off." The crying made Kiara hiccup which made her cry even more. "He ran off, Rafe. Turles aren't supposed to be fast.”
Rafe couldn't stop himself from laughing. "I didn't peg you as a sad drunk," he said, putting a hand on Kiara's shoulder to calm her down. "It's okay, Kie. I'm sure Leo is just fine."
Her sniffles stopped momentarily and she looked up at Rafe through her tear-soaked eyelashes. “You know no one ever called me Kie before you did. Now everyone does."
Rafe chuckled. "Alright, drink some water and you can sleep."
Kiara accepted the water bottle and pressed it to her lips, taking a swig. "You promise you're not mad at me? About Ashely and the dance?"
"I promise, Kie. I'd much rather make you sure you're okay."
"You're getting soft, Rafe," Kiara teased as she snuggled herself under the sheets.
"Never," he replied, reaching over and clicking off the lamp on the bedside table before he stood up. "Hollar if you think you're gonna throw up."
"Never," Kie repeated, giggling to herself as Rafe left the room, pulling the door closed behind him.
John B's face was plastered on wanted posters up and down the island. The entire county was looking for him, desperate to be the first to claim the twenty-five thousand dollar reward. The wholesome treasure hunt John B. has advertised to the Pogues at the beginning of the summer had gone way south, like equator-level south. None of them had eaten a decent meals in days, much less slept more than few hours. The whole thing was taking its toll but the stacks were too high for them to slip up now. They all knew the odds. John B's word would never stand against Ward's. They had to get him off the island.
JJ and Kiara pulled up the boatyard, the keys to the Phantom clutched so tightly in JJ's palm that they left little indentions. He'd emerged from his house, his jaw set and only held up the keys in response to Kiara asking how it went so she decided not to push him on it.
JJ shoved open the rusty metal door of the garage. "There she be. Hey, girl," he remarked. "1983 formula four-oh-two SR1." JJ pulled the sheet covering the boat off, the sunlight streaming in through the windows making the dust lingering in the air visible. "The Phantom," JJ announced proudly.
"Mmhm," Kie hummed.
"First boat to make the run to Bermuda in under sixteen hours, Kie," JJ paused. "Forty years old! Forty. And it's still the fastest thing that Kildare's ever seen."
"It's kind of a junker."
"Really?" JJ turned to her. "She's right there, Kie. She can hear you. Let's just put it this way. You would not be smokin' weed right now if she never existed, okay?"
"I just hope it runs," Kie replied.
"Oh, no, she'll run alright. She's faster than any of the cutters the boy in blue got."
The sounds of motorcycle engines roared from outside the garage.
"Pope. Finally," Kie exclaimed, jogging to meet him. Hopefully, the Outer Banks sun had burned off any weirdness still lingering from this morning, she prayed.
Rafe appeared from behind the boat and Kiara stopped suddenly, not expecting the sight of him.
"Hey, there. What's goin' on? JJ?" Rafe said and JJ also froze at the sound of the eldest Cameron's voice. "How you guys doin'?”
Barry whistled, announcing his own arrival. "Well, well...." The sounds of a gun cocking send the blood rushing to Kie's ears. JJ raised his hands in the air, backing up as Barry pushed the gun to his chest. "See, don't think I forgot about me and you on the side of the road. I'm here because I want my motheruckin' money."
Barry grabbed the side of JJ's face, shoving him to the ground. "JJ! JJ!" Kie screamed as Rafe pulled her back from the scene. "Rafe!" Kiara struggled against Rafe’s taller and stronger physique.
"That's what I'm here for, ain't it," Barry shouted lifting JJ's head up by his hair.
"It's not you we want, Kie. Alright, Where's John B?" Rafe asked.
"I don't know," she screamed back, her hand slapping Rafe's face on instinct.
"I really wish you didn't do that.”
"Look, I know what you did.” Kie’s voice wavered.
"What? What'd I do?" Rafe's face inched closer to hers.
"You murdered Peterkin."
Rafe's hand flew up to Kiara's throat, wrapping his fingers tight around it. Kiara's mouth fell open in a silent scream as she clawed at his hand. "Don't you ever say those fucking words again," Rafe warned.
"Rafe," Kiara pleaded. Eighteen months later and Kiara could tell Rafe didn’t have a single ounce of warmth left for her. The Rafe that had protected her from handsy freshman boys and made her drink water so her hangover wasn't as bad, the Rafe that had once held a deep sibling-like affection for her was gone, replaced by someone with pure blinding disdain for pogues of any kind.
"Understood? Do you understand? Where's John B? Where's John B?" Rafe asked again, his tone growing impatient
"I don't know," Kie yelled. Rafe’s hand was growing tighter around her throat with every word, forcing tears to her eyes. Fuck this. Rafe Cameron wasn’t about to be the thing that killed her. This rich, white asshole couldn’t get away with two murders.
"Where's John B? Huh?"
"I don't know! I don't know!"
Rafe's hand fell away from her throat suddenly. "Don't touch her," Kiara heard Pope screamed, his voice full of rage as he swung a metal pole into Rafe's back. The look on his face was something Kiara had never seen before from Pope. It sent a chill down her spine.
"Hey!" Barry yelled as he attempted to throw his gun to Rafe but it landed on the ground a few feet short.
"Kie! Kick it!" JJ hollered and the gun disappeared under the boat out of reach.
JJ picked up Barry slamming him into the boat. Pope's fist continued to connect with Rafe’s face. Again and again. Crap, he wasn’t stopping.
"Pope," Kie said. "Okay, Pope. Pope! Pope, that's good! Stop!"
JJ, having thrown Barry aside, moved to pull Pope off Rafe. "Hey, Pope! He's had enough, dude."
"He's good." Kie pleaded as Pope reached for a piece of plastic tubing, pulling it tight around Rafe's neck.
"Snap out of it, man. Snap out of it, dude!" JJ said.
"Pope!" Kie yelled again. "Pope, that's too much!"
"Stop, dude," JJ added. "Dude, cmon! Stop! Stop, dude!"
"Pope! Get off!" Kie desperately tried to make eye contact with him
"Let go! Come on!"
"Look at me!" Kie screamed in one final attempt to stop Pope from going to far. Rafe's face was already turning a concerning shade of red. If Pope crossed this line, Kiara feared there would be no coming back. She already had one fugitive to deal with, she didn’t want another.
Pope dropped the tubing, eyes wide with fear.
"Shit. Oh, shit." JJ said.
Rafe coughed from the floor, blood smeared down his chin.
"Okay, we gotta go. We gotta go." Kiara announced, hustling back the car. They had to get the boat ready for John B. They had to get him off the island. Her Pope-like organizational instincts kicked in protecting her from processing anything that had just happened. Letting her forget the look in Rafe’s eyes as his hand closed around her throat. Three o’clock at the dump. They had to stay on schedule. Three o’clock. Three o’clock. Three o’clock.
The single yellow heart Sarah had responded to Kiara's ‘Happy Birthday!’ text with stared back at her mockingly. She closed out of her messages, opening Instagram instead. Story after story showed the party she hadn't been invited to. A shaky video of everyone singing to Sarah, her face lit up by the glow of the candles. A bathroom selfie of all the girls who Kiara had through became her closest friends, their faces flushed red with joy. She clicked the side button of her iphone making the screen going black. Kiara couldn't stand to look at it all happening for another minute. She flopped backward on her bed opting to stare at the plain, white ceilings of her bedroom instead.
She should have been, standing by Sarah's side, smiling along with everyone in a tipsy haze of happiness, not watching it happen via Instagram. Kiara knew she wasn't doing anything productive by throwing herself a pity party but God, she was pissed. She wanted Sarah to know it too. She picked up her phone from where she'd dropped it next to her on the comforter.
The line rang twice before a voice answered the call.
“Kildare County Police, what’s the emergency?”
Kiara hesitated. Sarah was sure to figure out it was her who had ratted on the party and that would be social suicide enough. But Sarah really had brought this on herself. She should have invited to Kie to her fucking birthday.
“Hello? Anyone there?” The operator asked.
Kiara brought the phone back up to her ear. “Hi, I’d like to file a noise complaint, please. Two six six St. Margaret Street.”
“Yes, the Cameron’s house,” Kiara confirmed, wiping at her tear-stained cheeks and steading her voice as she relied the rest of the information to the operator.
Happy birthday to you, Sarah Cameron.
When they walked through the doors of the fancy restaurant with the French name that Peter didn't even want to attempt to pronounce, the couple was met with a young woman standing at the hostess station, looking like she'd rather be anywhere else.
Barely looking up from the little podium where she obviously was 'hiding' her phone, she glanced at Peter as she spoke, not paying any attention to the older man beside him. "Sorry for the inconvenience, but unfortunately we're full tonight. I'd love to help you make a reservation for another time if you'd like." Her eyes moved back down as she fiddled with a pen absentmindedly.
Tony didn't respond, just smirked down at Peter from behind his dark sunglasses. 'Wait for it' he mouthed. He sniffed lightly, nose twitching.
And Peter, well he just stood there and did exactly that. His eyes wandered, landing on the small, gold metal rectangle pinned to the hostess’ black button up. Hailey, it read in flowing black script.
The woman looked up, finally, when neither of them said anything. Her eyes met Peter's again and she smiled at him, raising one of her eyebrows questioningly. "Is there a specific day you'd like?" She turned to the side and began clicking through options on the computer. "We could do next Tuesday evening, at seven-thirty?”
Tony took that as his chance, clearing his throat. He shifted and took a step closer to his husband, hand moving to rest on his lower back. “We have a reservation, actually.”
Hailey looked up, then, head turning to face Tony in response to the sound.
Peter had to bite back a laugh at the way the hostess' expression changed, leaning into Tony’s embrace.
Mouth gaping, she simply stared at them for a moment, eyes wide with shock. Then a deep flush overtook her face. Hailey hurried to speak, spluttering over her words as she straightened her posture. “Oh, God, I am- I am so sorry. Mr. Stark. So sorry, Let me just-.” With shaking hands, she began typing before turning to them a moment later, an embarrassed smile pulling at her lips. “Everything’s, um, all set for the private room you reserved, sir. M-mister Stark.”
“That’d be ‘Misters’ Stark,” Tony corrected, smiling down at Peter. He pressed a kiss to the boy’s temple, eyes closing briefly and making a delicate blush spread over his cheeks.
“Yes, of course. If you’ll both follow me, I’ll show you to your table.” Having reconstructed her mask of professionalism, Hailey grabbed two menus and gestured for the two men to follow her into the main area of the restaurant.
They walked through the deep, navy velvet curtains that were drawn and made their way through the dining area. There were tables scattered throughout, all occupied by people who looked like they had more money in their wallets than Peter had seen in his entire life up until that point.
He could feel all of their eyes on him, no doubt wondering who was so lucky as to be on the arm of Tony Stark. He could hear their scandalized whispers. And he’d honestly thought he wouldn’t know how to feel about the attention. But here he was, preening under their gazes. The teen loved everyone seeing that yes he, Peter Benjamin Parker, had somehow lucked out and captured the attention of the playboy. He certainly looked the part, in his powder blue button down (of which the top few buttons were undone, exposing a bit of his chest and the thin chains draped from his neck, but not open enough to give away the lingerie he was wearing underneath) and his tight gunmetal trousers, both by Gucci. He didn’t even want to know how much the outfit actually cost.
But he wanted everyone else to.
The warmth of Tony’s palm on the small of his back as they walked, his fingertips ghosting over the top of his ass, had something warm fizzling deep in Peter’s belly.
Once they reached the far end of the dining area, they were led into an alcove off to the side, separated by another dark curtain. There was a single table in the moderately sized room, set up for two. A bouquet of red roses sat in the middle of the white table cloth like a centerpiece. The lighting was inviting and intimate at the same time, and it was quiet, the conversations of the other patrons but a low murmur in the background.
Hailey sat the menus down on the table in their respective places before turning to the two patrons. “Here you go, gentlemen.” While the two of them sat down, Tony pulling Peter’s chair out for him, she reached for the glass pitcher of ice water and filled each of their glasses. “I’ll start you off with some water, and a server will be right with you. I hope you enjoy your visit with us here at La Brise Fraîche.” She shot them a quick smile before making a hasty exit, face once more taken over in a rosy blush.
Tony chuckled as he shifted his chair a bit closer to the table. Slipping off his sunglasses, he popped them into the pocket of his black suit jacket, in front of the little pocket square that matched Peter’s shirt. “She certainly changed her tune, huh baby?” He shot Peter a soft smile as he picked up his menu and gestured for the younger man to do the same.
Peter hummed in response to his husband’s teasing, following his lead and opening the menu in order to look it over. A frown soon formed between his eyebrows, and his eyes flicked from the parchment up to Tony’s face. “Tony,” he said softly, “this, uh, most of this is in French. I can’t- And there’s no prices on here. How do I…” He trailed off, uncertainly, all of his earlier confidence gone now that they were alone again. He felt extremely out of his element all of a sudden.
Reaching across the table, the older man brushed his fingers over the back of Peter’s hand. “It’s alright, Pete. What are you in the mood for, baby? We should definitely get some wine,” he said, winking.
Peter giggled and threw his head back a little. When he looked back over at Tony, his eyes were gleaming and he bit his lip, running the toe of his shoe from the inside of the man’s ankle up to his knee. “You trying to get me drunk, Mr. Stark?”
Tony’s gaze darkened, causing Peter’s breath to catch in his throat. “Maybe I am, Mr. Stark.”
Their waiter approached them, then, slipping through the navy drapery. “Good evening gentlemen. I’m Jacques, and I’ll be your server tonight. Can I start the two of you off with something to drink?” He smiled at them both as he spoke with a light French accent, eyes flickering between them before focusing on Tony.
The billionaire cleared his throat, not even bothering to reach for the proffered wine list. “We’ll have whatever the finest Cab Sauvignon is, and how about a Sauvignon Blanc as well?” Though he phrased it as a question, it didn’t very much sound like one, and Peter squirmed in his seat at the authoritative tone of his voice.
God, how was he going to make it through this dinner? They hadn’t even ordered yet and he was already horny.
And it only got worse from there.
The wines Tony had chosen were really strong, Peter thought to himself as he fumbled a bit with his fork, trying to twist up some of the creamy pasta on the plate in front of him. It was some sort of mushroom-based sauce, and it looked delicious. And it would be, if the numerous other dishes they had ordered and already sampled, Tony insisting that he try a little bit of everything, were anything to go by.
He was flushed from the alcohol, and inebriated enough that he was no longer bothering with trying to hold back the little sounds of ecstasy that left his mouth at each bite of the incredible cuisine.
His eyes fluttered shut once he finally managed to twist up enough pasta to put in his mouth, and the soft noise he made sounded truly indecent. He heard Tony’s sharp intake of breath and sighed contentedly as he chewed the bite of food before opening his eyes again in order to get another forkful.
Feeling his husband’s eyes boring into his skin, Peter looked up from his plate. A small whimper escaped him at the hungry look in his eyes. “Tony?”
The older man licked at his bottom lip as his eyes roved over Peter’s face. His voice was somewhat rough when he spoke, leaning forward in his seat. “You’ve got a little something there, baby,” he said lowly, bringing his thumb to his mouth to lick it before reaching across the table to swipe the digit just under Peter’s bottom lip. The small smear of glistening white came off easily, and he pressed the pad of his thumb against Peter’s lips, prompting him to open.
Another whine escaped the teen as he did so immediately, granting Tony’s finger entrance. Peter began sucking on it lightly to clean the sauce off, and he hummed once the light cream dissipated and he’d swallowed it down, allowing him to focus on the sensation of Tony’s calloused skin on his tongue.
Tony groaned softly, shifting in his chair. “Mmm, that’s my good boy.” He pulled his thumb away, smirking at the displeased noise that came from his young lover as he reached down to adjust himself in his pants.
Peter caught the movement. His own cock, which had been slightly interested since they’d left the hotel thanks to how sexy he felt in the lingerie he had slipped on, gave a slight twitch. “You hard for me, Daddy,” he asked, blinking coquettishly at the man and reaching for one of his two wine glasses, bringing the one filled with the red wine to his lips. He made a bit of a show of running his tongue from the base of the goblet up to the rim, cleaning up a rivulet of the dark, blood red liquid that had dripped down while he drank.
“Always, baby boy,” Tony said softly, keeping his eyes on Peter as he took a bite of what was left of the steak au poivre in front of him.
They continued eating, and Peter continued his teasing, until their server arrived a few minutes later to check on them. The young boy was glad the table cloth was there to hide the erection in his lap, his flush intensifying as Jacques approached them. Tony, however, didn’t look phased, continuing to eat the rest of his food and sip at the full-bodied alcohol in his glass, eyes trained on his husband.
Beginning to clear away the empty plates, Jacques spoke up. “I hope everything has been to your satisfaction, gentlemen.” When they both responded in the affirmative, he continued. “Would you be interested in ordering anything for dessert? Tonight’s special is a beautiful lavender and honey posset, it’s absolutely to die for,” he intoned, making eye contact with Peter and smiling.
Tony scowled at the interaction, sniffing lightly and narrowing his eyes a bit. “Nope, I think we’re all set…” He trailed off at the pleading look Peter gave him, big brown eyes peering over at him dolefully.
“Please, Tony,” the younger man asked, foot once again moving to rub against the inside of his husband’s leg. “I’m not sure what a, um, posset is, but it sounds really yummy, and Jacques says it’s good.” He looked at Jacques briefly, who nodded, and then back at Tony. “This is about trying new things, right?” He bit his lip for good measure, just to punctuate his little performance.
With an eye roll, Tony caved, his hand wrapping around Peter’s ankle underneath the table. He squeezed it, not ungently. “Alright,” he said, sending Jacques a quick smile as he piled the last plate into his arms. “We’ll have one of the possets, then, please.”
And he’d obviously made the right choice, as he was now watching Peter suck the remnants of the custard off of his pointer finger like it was his job to ensure that the small glass jar was spotless. “That good, sweetie?”
Peter hummed around his finger, eyes flicking up to meet Tony’s, which were once again flashing at him dangerously. His body thrummed in response, every fiber of his being screaming out in want. “It’s so good, Daddy,” he whined softly, the hand not in his mouth pressing down on the bulge in his pants. “So good.”
Sitting up straighter in his chair, Tony took a deep breath before reaching into his pocket for his wallet. He flipped through it for a moment before pulling out a stack of hundred dollar bills and slapping them down on the table. Standing, he walked around the table to Peter’s seat in order to gently pull him up and closer to him.
Peter followed willingly, stepping into Tony’s personal space and craning his neck up to that his lips could meet the older man’s. He moaned softly at the feeling of their clothed erections pressing up against each other.
“Let’s go, baby,” Tony whispered into his mouth, pulling away so that he could lead Peter out of the room and through the main dining area. He paid no mind to any of the other patrons, who were no doubt scandalized by the sight of the two of them, rumpled and clearly aroused.
Peter just flushed, grinning as he made eye contact with a few people, winking at an older lady who was looking at him with wide eyes.
Yeah, he liked people knowing he was Tony’s.
When they got back to the hotel, Tony backed Peter up against the door to the hotel room as he began to lavish his neck with kisses and bites while his hands gripped at Peter’s ass. “Fuck, baby, you look so pretty tonight,” he rasped, relishing in the way his husband jerked in his hold in response to a particularly sharp nip.
“Just for you,” Peter moaned, hands fumbling to remove Tony’s jacket. He threw it to the ground as it was shrugged off, gasping when he was lifted into the older man’s arms in order to be carried over to the bed and deposited on the covers. Kicking his shoes off, he watched as Tony did the same and rolled up the sleeves to his wrinkling white dress shirt.
Crawling on the bed to kneel over Peter, Tony reached for the buttons on the boy’s shirt and began undoing them. A low growl sounded in his throat at the first peek of black lace that became exposed. “What do we have here?”
Peter preened under his heavy gaze, pushing up onto his elbows so he could slip the shirt off his arms, exposing the black bodysuit he wore underneath. “Do you like it, Daddy?” He peered up at him from underneath his lashes.
“Like it? I love it, baby boy.” Tony trailed kisses down the teen’s chest, feeling the muscles in his abdomen twitch under in ministrations. When he reached the waistband of the dark trousers, he undid the button with practiced ease and pulled them down, pausing for Peter to lift his hips and throwing them to the floor once they were off. His eyes raked over Peter’s form, mesmerized by the sight of him spread out on the fluffy comforter, the inky lingerie creating a strong contrast. He could very clearly see Peter’s erection straining against the lace, and the wet spot that was glistening with precum.
“Daddy,” Peter whined, hips twitching upward in an attempt to get some friction. “Touch me, please.”
Tony hummed softly, eyes locking on Peter’s lips for a moment before he got off the bed in order to walk over to the kitchenette area. He rifled through the drawers for a moment, ignoring Peter’s indignant noises. When he found what he was looking for, he resumed his previous position.
Making eye contact with Peter, Tony uncapped the lid of the honey bottle and squeezed some out onto his pointer and middle fingers. “Get up, baby,” he said softly. “Kneel for me.”
Eyes wide, Peter followed the request, only wobbling a little bit as a result of the alcohol in his system.
“Now open,” Tony instructed as he brought his dripping finger’s to Peter’s lips. He groaned when the digits were enveloped in the warmth of the boy’s mouth, shivering when he started suckling, not unlike the way he treated the man’s cock. “Fuck, Peter.”
Bolstered by Tony’s words, and desperate for the sticky sweetness he was desperately chasing with his tongue, Peter whined in the back of his throat before he closed his eyes and began sucking in earnest.
Eyes blazing, Tony watched in awe as the teen fellated his fingers. His other hand moved up to grab at Peter’s unruly curls, using his grip to hold the boy still as he pressed his fingers further into his mouth.
Peter’s eyes flew open as he gagged around the intrusion, throat convulsing as Tony held him there. He whimpered, eyes watering as he struggled to breathe. He gasped when Tony eventually removed his fingers, spluttering as thick saliva dripped down his chin. “Daddy- please,” he rasped, voice already a little wrecked. “More.” His eyes flickered to the honey bottle that was laying on the bed.
Smirking, Tony snatched it up. His hands moved to his belt and began unfastening it. “Want some more dessert, baby?”
***
Peter was going to be mortified when he realized that they were able to see everything that was going on. Every lingering touch or look, every...well, every time he was with Tony was being broadcasted to SHIELD through EDITH. No matter what was going on, sensitive and tame content alike, it was all being witnessed by the agents (plus, even more uncomfortably, May and Ned.)
Unfortunately, he wasn’t aware. So it didn’t seem like he was going to stop anytime soon.
So Ned was forced to suffer through every moment of it in a room full of adults. Again, including Peter’s poor aunt. Hopefully she wasn’t paying attention, though, because it definitely would have been even more awkward for her to see. Or even think about.
Just. Ew.
Personally, he was trying to figure out if the situation was illegal. After all, Peter was seventeen. And even though technically it was all in his head, it was still explicitly sexual content that they were all witnessing, starring him.
Maybe it wasn’t the best or most relevant thing to be thinking over, but Ned was trying to ignore the reality of what was actually going on. Watching his best friend make bedroom eyes at and get railed by their deceased idol wasn’t something he was particularly fond of.
He just needed to distract himself from the...activities that kept occurring on the monitors. So he tried to keep his mind away from that part of the situation, legality and all.
What he really needed to focus on was getting Peter out. It had been nearly two weeks since Beck’s announcement that outed Peter’s identity. It had been almost two weeks since Peter had run away and gone into hiding.
They hadn’t even been able to make contact with him through May for days now. He was solely focused on Tony, just as he had been since the wedding. They weren’t sure how much longer that pattern would continue. Or if it would ever stop.
Everyone was getting more and more anxious by the day.
Ned hadn’t found any real solution yet. There were no cracks in the program, no hidden door in the code that he could sneak his way through. So far, it was all sealed tightly.
Usually, that would be considered a good thing. But it just made his job that much more stressful in the moment. They still had no location for Peter. They were yet to discover a way to shut down the illusion. All they had was the ability to send May in when Peter wanted his family there. Nothing else. And there hadn’t been much family bonding time lately.
“When do you think they’ll finally stop?” Paige wondered out loud, eyes firmly on the screen as she leaned over Ned’s shoulder.
The teen jumped at the sound of her voice, head whipping around until they nearly collided. He had no idea that she’d snuck up on him. “What? Oh.” He made a face as he processed her question. “I don’t know. Hopefully soon.” Although that was doubtful, if he was honest with himself.
She hummed in acknowledgment, nodding a little. Her eyes seemed to follow the movements on the monitor before she finally glanced away, seeming a bit flustered. “Yeah. They’ve been at it a while, huh.”
Ned had absolutely no desire to discuss his best friend’s sex life. Especially considering the circumstances. And the interest in the agent’s voice sparked something in him. Not annoyance, not at her, but something very close to that. He wasn’t quite sure how to describe it. “They kinda have. But I’m trying to not pay that much attention to all of it. I’d like to have something of a normal friendship with Peter when he’s out. I can’t do that if I spend all this time watching him get-“
“Leeds,” Fury interrupted, standing over the two young people.
Paige instantly straightened up when she heard him, a light flush overtaking her cheeks as she pushed her hair back behind her ear.
“Yes, sir?” Ned answered, slowly looking up at the man.
“Any change? There has to be something you can do to get his attention.” The director worked to keep up his hard exterior, but was obviously uncomfortable. As was everyone else.
Except maybe Paige. But Ned didn’t want to think about why that was.
Ned sighed, fingers absently tapping at his keyboard. “No. Nothing yet, sir. I’ve been looking for a way to slip through into the program more frequently, but everything is airtight. Tony Stark knew what he was doing.” He couldn’t keep the admiration out of his voice. Which was a little annoying, since the tech and designer in question was causing nothing but issues. “And Peter too, I guess,” he added, knowing that Peter had probably input quite a bit of his own code into the program.
“Do you think he knew that Peter would use the glasses for this?” Paige murmured.
Again with the interested tone. “Probably not,” Ned supplied, clicking away from the live-feed for a moment. He technically wasn’t supposed to do that, but it would make everyone more comfortable for the moment. And it made certain that agent Oliver would have to stop watching, at least for the time being. “I mean, maybe. But probably not.”
“Stark wasn’t exactly the picture of perfect morality, but I don’t think he ever imagined anything like this happening.” Fury shook his head, face contorted in visible discomfort. “Especially not from Parker. I knew he was a devious little shit but not like this.”
Ned was pretty much on the same page. He knew that Peter had his moments, but it was never anything more than normal teenage hormone-fueled...lust felt like too strong of a word, but nothing else was coming to mind. He’d never thought that Peter was even capable of the things he had seen playing out on the screen. Although, he really hadn’t thought about it too much. Or ever.
His best friend was objectively an attractive guy, but Ned had really never thought of him in anything but a platonic way. So this was a lot of stuff that he’d never wanted to see.
“I dunno, I don’t know much about him but he seems like the closeted-kinky type,” Paige offered with a slight smile pulling at her lips. “Y’know, eager to please and all? Maybe I’m the only one that sees it.”
“Can we not talk about this?” Ned said quickly, definitely louder than necessary. The annoyed-but-not feeling was back. He adjusted his glasses just so he could have something to do with his hands for a moment. “I’d rather just focus on getting him out. Or figuring out how to talk to him.”
“Leeds is right,” Fury agreed, looking at the screen again. “It wouldn’t be my first choice, and it pains me to say it, but I suggest you turn that back on. Just to be sure nothing gets missed. We need to send Ms. Parker back in as soon as he shows signs of wanting her back in.”
None of them believed that it would be happening anytime soon, but Ned begrudgingly clicked to the feed again.
“Great. Keep checking to see if there’s anywhere you can slip through, he’s already held onto that tech for too long.”
The man walked away, leaving Ned and Paige alone again.
Ned looked at the agent, giving her a smile. “So, any ideas? We’re still stuck with what we’ve got and I feel like I’ve tried everything.” He sighed heavily, looking back to the screen.
He expected to see more of the same, ‘the same’ being Peter engaging in some insanely sexual scene with no end in sight. But it seemed like they had finally stopped, as the screen was dark, Ned’s reflection looking back at him. Something that only happened when Peter fell asleep, therefore unable to keep the tech running.
“They’re asleep!” He announced to the room. Everyone seemed to collectively relax. No more having to watch a potential lawsuit.
And sleep was good news for Ned; that meant he was able to finally get some real work done without having to constantly check up on the feed. He would have about seven hours or so (going by how long the illusion was typically down for a night of rest) to work and figure out a way to shut things down without worrying about his friend waking up and realizing it. Maybe even stopping him.
Nothing had come of the other nights he’d been able to work, but he kept hoping that he’d get lucky soon. He was determined to save his best friend. He had to.
So he started the stopwatch to record how long Peter slept and then got to work.
***
Ned worked all night, but was still stuck exactly where he had been, in terms of progress. The only connection they had was through the small gap he’d been able to squeeze his own coding into to get May through. And he had a bad feeling that his ‘solution’ with that wouldn’t last for much longer.
He kept track of what Peter (and Tony, by extension) was doing as the morning went on, instantly becoming more focused when he heard a brief mention of family.
“I think it would be nice to spend another day with them,” Peter commented through the crackly speakers, seeming to pack up the countless bags that he’d acquired over the past couple of days.
Not-Tony hummed in agreement, moving to help his- husband? (Ned wasn’t quite sure how all of it worked. It was all just pretend, after all.) No matter what they were considered, Tony began helping Peter with gathering up his bags. “I think that’s a great idea. Haven’t seen them since the wedding, we should spend some time with them.”
“Yeah, just having everyone over would be nice. We could watch a movie or something. One of those old ones you like.”
Tony made an offended noise, glancing in Peter’s direction. “Just because it came out before, what, two thousand? Doesn’t make it old. You’re just a baby,” he teased.
“Cradle robber,” Peter shot back playfully, an easy smile on his face. Like what he said didn’t make Ned’s skin crawl. They joked so easily (Peter’s mind did, at least) and yet the age gap between the two seemed to become that much more apparent in the moment.
“Oh, quiet.” Tony waved one hand. “So are you thinking that you just want to go back to the tower? Or was there another idea in that pretty little brain of yours?”
“Just home. Please.” Apparently ‘home’ was the tower, where Tony had mentioned, because he nodded and smiled after the answer.
“That isn’t his home,” May said softly from somewhere behind Ned, causing the teen to turn around.
Ned leaned back in his chair, looking up at her. “I’m hoping that he remembers that,” he admitted. “But I’m sure he does,” he corrected quickly when he saw the woman’s expression fall.
“He has to. He can’t just- he can’t leave us like this. For someone who got him killed.” May’s voice took on a slightly angrier tone as she spoke. But the anger fizzled out just as quickly as it came. “I need to talk to him, Ned. Not just within his little script. I need to actually get through to him.”
The teen nodded slowly, watching her closely. He knew it was a bad idea. The mission so far was just to stick to the scene that Peter wanted and to follow his lead. Get close to him. May wasn’t nearly close enough yet. And Peter didn’t seem to be close to changing his mind in any way. “But Fury said-“
“I don’t care what he said,” May said sharply. “Peter needs his family. His real family. He needs me. Not the me he expects to play along with his little game.”
That was a dangerous thing to say, especially given how the director seemed to know everything that was going on. Ned hoped that Fury hadn’t heard her. That could possibly compromise the one advantage they had. “He does need you. But just- not yet. You have to go along with his scene right now. Just for a little while longer.”
The woman watched him, expression softening slightly. She knew that he was right. But there was nothing she wanted to do more than reach out to Peter and bring him home. To his actual home. “Okay. But I’m not going another week or whatever without him. I can’t do that shit. This has already gone on too long. He needs to be home. And if he doesn’t get it together, I’ll be bringing him back with or without SHIELD’s help.”
The last bit sounded like a threat, and it probably was. Ned knew that she missed Peter. He was her only remaining family member. And he missed him too, of course he did. He just knew that it was different because May had seen him break too many times before. And she didn’t want to see it again.
She left, presumably going back to the small room that had her setup for entering the illusion. If Peter was talking about family, she had better get ready to go in as soon as he expected her to.
She slipped the headset on and waited, heart aching as she watched Peter interacting with Tony through the screen. She’d never seen him look at anyone quite like that. With so much love in his eyes. It nearly broke her heart to think about how her goal was to take him away from that. But she felt less guilty when she thought about all she was bringing him back to.
His home. His family. His friends. Everything he needed was all here in the real world. And he’d find someone else to look at in that same way, she was sure of it. And when he did, it would be okay. Because it would be the right person and the right time.
Not a dead man who was the root of all his issues.
May held her breath as the scene changed before her eyes, transforming into the sleek and expensive interior of Stark tower once again. And as the couple relaxed in the living area, she saw how Peter’s expression shifted into one of more concentration.
And she heard the quiet ding of the elevator and knew it was time for her to slip into the fantasy again. She heard agent Oliver instructing her in the background, but she already knew what to do.
She let herself relax, getting pulled into the illusion until she was standing in the elevator with the rest of Peter’s ‘special guests.’ It still gave her an odd, sick feeling of deja vu to see Mary, Richard, and Ben all together like that. It was all wrong. But she had to act like everything was okay. Like she wasn’t horrified by being surrounded by family members (and her husband) that she’d already lost and grieved for years.
Her participation in the scene had to be perfectly in accordance with Peter’s intentions or it would all be ruined. At least that’s what she’d been told countless times. But as soon as the doors opened and she saw Peter again, every plan they’d ever discussed dropped to the bottom of her list of priorities.
She just wanted him to come home.
Peter glanced up once he heard the doors, beaming. “Perfect!” He held onto Tony’s arm gently, leaning against him. “Now everyone is here.”
They filed out of the elevator, going over to the couple. May couldn’t help but realize how off it all felt. Without Peter actively controlling the other figures, it was like they were hardly there. Nothing more than stand-ins.
It was terrifying to witness, making her that much more determined to bring the boy home. He couldn’t stay in this environment, living entirely in his mind with no real company. It would only do further damage to his mental state.
As soon as they were in a certain vicinity, the scene seemed to come to life. Suddenly there was soft chatter from the other people as they started carrying their own conversations.
May jumped when she felt a hand on her lower back, instantly wanting to bat the intruding touch away. She knew who it was before she even looked and forced herself to relax. She had to remind herself that it wasn’t her Ben. Letting herself get attached wouldn’t do her any favors. It couldn’t happen. She had to keep her focus on the goal of saving Peter. That’s what was important.
“It’s nice of them to have us over like this,” Not-Ben murmured to her. “Yknow, I like seeing Pete so happy.” He smiled a bit and May’s heart ached. There was the smile she remembered. Easy, slightly mischievous. All Ben.
“Yeah…,” she started, forgetting what they were talking about for a moment. All she could think about was her husband. She could finally have him back like this, maybe she saw the appeal-
No. She couldn’t let herself get sucked in.
“I don’t know. I’ve never been a huge fan of Tony Stark,” she whispered back, not caring about possible consequences. She had to keep her mind straight, and in that moment that required being honest.
“But he’s happy, May.” Ben’s eyes searched her face, but she knew it wouldn’t matter. He wasn’t seeing anything. And even if he did, he couldn’t do anything with the information he found. He was just another figment of Peter’s imagination.
“Yeah. For now,” she mumbled, looking away. She had to focus on what was wrong. So her brain didn’t get convinced that he really was her Ben.
He was too tall. Not by much, but just enough that it was noticeable. And it bothered her.
And he was too...muscular. Sure, he’d never been thin, but it wasn’t like this.
Then it clicked.
This Ben only existed as Peter saw him.
Of course her husband would have seemed like some big, strong man to the boy that he raised. He was Peter’s superhero. And Peter never saw anything different.
That fact shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did.
She fixed her expression, not letting her true feelings show. She still needed to focus on the task at hand, and that was getting close to Peter. She had to follow along with his scene and make sure everything was in place. Nothing could seem out of the ordinary from how he wanted it.
They all sat down, on a couch facing Peter and Tony.
Peter grinned at them, clapping his hands together happily. “Okay, so, I was thinking maybe we could play some games? That’s always fun, right?”
“Yeah, as long as you don’t cheat,” Ben mumbled with a smile. It was all just teasing.
“I would never! Mean.” The teen stuck his tongue out at him before laughing. “What should we play?”
“Monopoly?” Tony suggested, wrapping his arm around his husband’s waist.
“You’re so old,” Peter whined. Then he giggled, leaning into the touch. “Kidding. Monopoly would be fun, it just takes forever.” Good thing they had all the time in the world to play.
“And ruins families,” May said under her breath, but thankfully no one else seemed to catch it.
“No one has anything else going on, we can play for as long as we want,” the older man assured him. “Want me to go grab it?”
Peter nodded, smiling up at him. “Sure, baby. Thank you.”
Tony stood up to get the game, coming back only a moment later with the box in his hands. “I call being banker,” he said playfully. He sat down and started setting the game up on the table between all of them.
No one argued, just laughing as they kept joking and teasing each other about the entire thing.
As the night went on, the energy level never wavered. Everyone was happy and relaxed, excited to be around each other.
Everyone except for May.
She hid it well, playing along, but inside she was deeply bothered by all of it. Nothing felt right, no matter how the others were acting. None of them were real. It was just her and Peter.
She watched as Tony reached out for his “husband” again and her stomach flipped. She was tired of watching them behave like that and pretending it was okay.
“Don’t touch him.”
The words left her mouth before she could stop them and the guilt set in instantly. She had just ruined the whole mission.
But now she could try things her own way.
Tony’s hand pulled away from Peter immediately, the confusion clear on his face. And May knew that the expression was only reflecting what her nephew was feeling.
“May, he can touch me. He’s my husband, after all. We got married, remember?” Peter shot her a smile, cuddling up to the other man. He tried to brush it off as how protective she always was. Maybe that was just bleeding into his projection of her.
“No, he isn’t, Peter.” May’s voice shook as she stood up, trying to move closer to him. “He isn’t real. You know that. None of this is real.”
“You’re not real,” he said quietly, eyes wide as he tried to figure out what was going on. That wasn’t supposed to happen. But as much as he tried to focus, she wouldn’t go back into place. Things wouldn’t go back to how he wanted them.
What was happening?
“Yes, I am. I’m the only real one here. It’s just you and me, Peter.” She met his eyes, looking desperate. “It’s me, baby. It’s actually me, I’m here. Please come home, this isn’t good for you. You need to come home and give the tech to Fury so-“
“No,” he said quickly, seeming to snap out of his confusion. “Tony gave it to me. It’s mine. No one else’s. And this is my home.” He glared at her, moving into Tony’s arms more.
How had SHIELD hacked May into the program? There shouldn’t have been any way for them to do that. He’d worked on the security coding himself, adding onto what Tony had already designed.
“Did I?” Tony mumbled, looking like he was trying to remember. What tech was being used? It seemed like they were just in the tower, nothing out of the ordinary.
But May ignored him. She continued tearfully. “Your home is with me. Your home is in the *real world*, not this thing you’ve made up! You can’t stay here!” She was getting more frantic.
“No, May. I can stay here. Maybe you should, too.” He watched her, trying to keep himself calm. He needed to regain control over the illusion. Maybe he wouldn’t have to lose anything. He just had to convince her to stay.
“I’ll be doing no such-“
“What’s the issue?” Ben cut in, moving to stand next to May. But he wasn’t going to help her. He was looking directly at her. “You could stay, couldn’t you. Right here. What’s the harm in that?” He grabbed her hands, brushing against her wedding ring.
The one she knew was buried in her closet, amongst the other things that reminded her of him too much to leave strewn about the apartment but she couldn’t bear to completely get rid of.
But it all felt so real.
“You’re dead,” she whispered, her own tone surprising her. She sounded terrified and just as weak as she had in the time right after he died. “I can’t stay. You’re gone and never coming back. All of you are.” Except for Peter, who didn’t want to be saved.
Ben smiled at her, like he’d expected the answer. Then he leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. Like he had a thousand times when he was alive. “I’m here now, May. Isn’t that enough?”
She hated how real it all felt. How tempting it was. She hated how she could feel his lips against her skin and how easily it pulled her back into the denial she’d felt right after the accident.
Maybe she could stay. She could have him back, live out life like they were supposed to. They were supposed to be together until they were old and grey until finally going from natural causes. Old age. His murder couldn’t touch them here.
It would be so easy to just stay.
But she knew that she couldn’t. It wasn’t possible. It would only destroy her mind to stay with him. And if she wasn’t taking care of her physical body then what would happen? She had to go. Staying wasn’t an option. She just had to convince him of that as well.
She stepped away from Ben, ignoring how much it hurt her to do so. Then she turned to Peter again, moving closer. Maybe if she could just hold him-
His eyes narrowed more as he watched her. He pushed her away when she tried to get closer again, instantly feeling guilty. But he wanted to keep her away. She was trying to take everything from him. If she didn’t want to stay, fine. She could go.
But he wasn’t going to lose this too.
“Get away from me,” Peter snapped, staying close to Tony. He looked almost protective, although he knew that physically it was impossible for anything to happen. “This is my home. Here. With him. And my family.”
May was still shocked at how he’d shoved her. He’d never behaved in such a way before, no matter how things had gotten. And he’d never been so angry, not at her. Not at anyone.
Where did her boy go? What happened to him?
“Peter, please,” she begged. “You can’t live like this. It might seem good for now, but you’re just going to hurt yourself. Please, you’ve gotta shut it down and tell us where you are. We’ll come get you and everything will be okay. SHIELD is working on fixing what happened with Mysterio, you can-“
“I’m not going anywhere! And I’m not telling you where I am, you’ll just make me stop!” There were tears welling in his eyes and his voice was shaking despite how strong he attempted to sound.
All May wanted to do was wipe those tears away and pull him in for a hug like she’d done countless times before. But she had a feeling that was a bad idea.
She felt so helpless, watching him from afar. She was losing him and she knew it.
That hurt more than anything else.
“Baby, please,” she murmured gently. “You can come home. Everything is going to be okay. We can get you some help,” she said slowly.
“I don’t need help. I need this.” And no one would take it away from him. “EDITH, find however she got in. Patch the hole. Make sure it won’t happen again.”
“Yes, Peter,” The AI answered, almost sounding nervous. If that was even something she was capable of.
Fear flashed through May as she stared at him. “Peter, please, don’t shut me out.”
“You’re not taking this from me. Everyone has taken everything from me!” Tears streamed down his face freely. “I get to keep this one thing. I get to have them all back. And you can’t take that. No one can. I won’t let you.”
“Peter, you need to come home. I miss you, we all miss you so much, baby. Please!”
“I miss you too. That’s why I wanted you here. But you messed it all up. You could have stayed here with me. With Uncle Ben.” He wiped his eyes, trying to calm himself.
“I’m sorry, baby, you know I can’t.”
“So you have to leave.” He was informed that EDITH found the coding that had been put in and she started fixing it.
“I love you, Peter. Please, think about what you’re doing,” she begged him. She was pushed from the illusion, still able to see through her headset but she couldn’t interact anymore.
“I love you too. But I’ve already thought about it. This is where I belong.”
Her screen went dark.
She ripped the headset off and threw it, burying her face in her hands. She’d fucked it all up.
And she’d lost him. He didn’t want to come home.
He wasn’t going to come home.
Agent Oliver rushed in, wincing when the tech hit the wall. It was probably broken now, but that could be dealt with later. She’d just watched everything play out on the screen, just like the others had. May was the first priority. “Ma’am-“
“I’m going home.” She looked up, eyes red like she was holding back tears. She pushed her glasses up and sniffled. “I’m leaving. This entire operation is pointless.” She stood up, quickly leaving the room without looking back.
“Ms. Parker, please, we’ll figure out another way,” Paige followed after her.
“May?” Ned looked up from his computer, quickly wiping away his own tears. There was enough to deal with, he could hold it together. He still had to figure out how to save Peter. “Please, don’t go. Not yet.”
She looked at him, but shook her head. “I’m going home. I can’t...I can’t do this. I messed it up, you’ll be better off without me. I can’t help you anymore. I’m sorry.”
As she walked away, she heard other people calling after her. Probably Fury, some other agents. But she didn’t turn around. She needed to get out.
Unlike Peter, all she wanted was to go home.
The drive to the building was short, her brain in a fog the entire time. She didn’t let herself feel. She couldn’t yet. Not until she was in the safety of the apartment.
Her car was parked and she was going up the elevator before she knew it. She blinked, slightly disoriented. She kept her eyes closed during the ride up, almost convinced that she would see Peter again when the door opened.
Of course, she didn’t. And she walked to the door of the apartment, posture defeated. Her whole body felt heavy, weighed down.
As soon as she put the key in the lock, the door opened and Happy pulled her into his arms.
“The kid called me,” he told her gently.
Her heart skipped a beat when he said that, hoping maybe he meant Peter. Maybe he changed his mind.
“The one you’ve been working with. At SHIELD,” he clarified, seeing the look on her face.
With that, she promptly dissolved into tears.
May Parker was a strong woman. She didn’t cry often. And even less often around other people.
But too much had happened, even for her. And she knew that Happy wouldn’t go anywhere no matter what she said. That he would stay, that he wouldn’t let anything happen to her. So she let herself cry, not holding anything back.
Everything was falling apart. Each tear that fell reminded her of it all. The guilt, the hurt, the anger she’d felt. The reopened wound of missing Ben. The aching void in her heart where Peter was missing.
Her boy didn’t want to be saved. So what was there that she could do?
Maybe this was just another loss that she’d have to learn to live with.
Hange was crunched over her laptop, typing furiously - it was probably another strong worded letter to one of their associates. If nerves weren't currently eating him up, Levi would have found the scene in front of him amusing. But as the case was, he was barely able to keep it together. He tried to distract himself, looking around Hange’s office. Even though, it was only the beginning of December, she was already in a festive spirit. There was a small Christmas tree on her table, and on her wardrobe hung a string of Christmas lights. Hange adored Christmas, so it was no surprise that she was getting ready for it so early.
Levi glanced back - thankfully, everyone else had already left the office. At least, no one would see him stare at Hange like he was some kind of a creep. It was bad enough that some interns jumped away from him in hallways.
There was nothing to be worried about, though. He just needed to ask Hange a small question. She was his best friend, there was nothing scary in asking your best friend a question. Besides, Hange probably wouldn't even accept his invitation. Knowing her, she received dozens offers already. She'd apologize and refuse, Levi would wave her off and then they'd forget about this incident altogether.
Just like they’ve forgotten about last year's incident.
Yes. There was absolutely nothing to worry about.
Levi straightened his shirt, fixed his tie and took a deep breath. And then finally— he knocked on the door.
"Yes!" Hange shouted. "Come in!"
"Oh, it's you," she said, as Levi walked inside. "I thought it was janitor coming to kick me out again," Hange laughed at her own joke.
The smile turned into a frown, as soon as she saw the look on Levi’s face.
“Is… everything alright?” she spoke gently, getting to her feet and coming to stand beside Levi. She tilted her head, looking at him worriedly. “You look kinda tense.”
Levi lowered his head, hiding his eyes behind the hair. “It’s… my mother,” he managed finally.
“Your mother?” behind the lenses of her glasses, Hange’s eyes widened. “Did something happen to her? What can I do to—”
“She’s fine,” Levi quickly assured her. He wasn’t going to tell it to her, of course, but Hange’s concern warmed his heart. “She just…” he cleared his throat and looked up at her, staring straight in her eyes. “She invited you over for a dinner. At Christmas.”
“Christmas?” she scratched the back of her head in confusion. “Are you asking me to spend Christmas with you?”
“My mom asks you,” Levi corrected. “But yeah. You don’t have to agree, though! If you have other plans already, it’s more than fine. She’ll understand. No hard feelings whatsoever.”
“Are you kidding me?” Hange beamed. “Christmas with Ackermans? How can I possibly refuse? Besides,” she elbowed him in a side with a mischievous look. “It’s not every day that Levi Ackerman—”
“My mom—”
“Invites me over to a Christmas party. Don’t worry, shorty,” Hange reached out and ruffled his hair. For some weird reason - probably because he let Hange get away with literally anything - he let her assault his immaculate haircut too. “Of course, I’ll come.”
“Great,” and Levi actually meant it. Despite, the fiasco during the last year’s Christmas party, he was looking forward to spending this Christmas with Hange by his side. “Now, c’mon, it’s almost nine pm. Get your shit, four-eyes.”
“Huh? Levi, are you offering me—”
“A ride home?” he scoffed. “Yes, I do, Hange. Or have you fixed your car already?”
Hange chuckled sheepishly. “I keep forgetting about that… you know how it is.”
Levi rolled his eyes. “Unfortunately, I do. So hurry up before I change my mind.”
“I’m on it, Captain!” she dashed to her desk, getting her bag and phone. Then Hange went to the wardrobe and took out her coat. She hastily put it on and haphazardly wrapped a scarf around her neck. “And I’m ready!” she announced proudly.
Levi tsked. “You’re such a mess,” he pulled her closer and fixed the wrapping of a scarf, making sure that it covered Hange’s neck completely. “There,” he patted her arm. “Now, you’re ready.”
“Thanks, dad,” Hange giggled and started to lead the way. “So, who else is going to be at the party?”
“You, my mom, Kenny—”
“Oh, your uncle?” she rubbed her hands together with a sly smile. “I like him! He’s so much fun!”
Levi huffed. “Just be careful around him, four-eyes. Or he’ll get you involved in some of his shady shit.”
“There is no need to be jealous,” she teased.
“Keep dreaming.”
“And that’s it?” Hange asked. “Your father—”
“Fuck no,” Levi replied instantly. “Kenny is more than enough to fill the asshole’s quota.”
Hange raised an eyebrow, amusement written all over her face. “So your uncle’s an asshole, huh? Didn’t he raise you, though? You know what they say – an apple doesn’t fall far—”
“Oi,” Levi interrupted, before more shit came out of her mouth. “I may be too straightforward sometimes, and sometimes I’m a little harsh and can come off as rude, but I’m nothing like Kenny.”
“If it helps you sleep at night,” Hange patted his shoulder with a sympathetic look.
“Shut up, four eyes,” scowling, he gave her a light shove.
“Ah!” Hange suddenly exclaimed, spinning around. “Christmas with Ackermans! I’m already looking forward to it!”
“Weirdo,” Levi commented, desperately fighting to keep an affectionate smile off his face.
“You’re saying it as if you aren’t the same,” Hange giggled. “Admit it, Levi. You’re as much of a weirdo as I am. That’s why we’re so compatible.”
“Whatever,” he scoffed, refusing to even entertain the idea. “Hurry up by the way. It’s late already, I don’t want to spend the whole night with your crazy ass.”
“Oh, Levi?” Hange put on an innocent look on her face, twirling a stray lock of her hair. “Can we stop to eat somewhere, please?”
Levi gave her a flat look. “Your fringe is empty again?”
“I just forgot to do the groceries…” she mumbled.
“Fine,” Levi sighed. “We’ll make a stop. But we’re going to my favorite place. Those disgusting burgers you love so much make me want to puke.”
“Let’s eat your boring soup then.”
“My boring soup is healthy. It won’t give you an atherosclerosis.”
“I need another favor from you…”
He groaned. “Let me guess, you forgot your wallet again?”
Hange shrugged with a smile. Levi cursed.
“Alright, I’ll pay for you. But it’s the last time, four-eyes,” he warned with a stern face.
With a smile still on her face, Hange nodded. They both knew that Levi was lying.
“Wait,” Levi said, as they neared the front door of the building. He turned to face Hange, eyeing her critically. “Where are your gloves?”
Hange rolled her eyes, but obediently opened her bag and started rummaging through her things. “Aha!” she exclaimed a couple of moments later, proudly showing Levi a couple of gloves. “Here they are!”
“Put them on,” Levi instructed, walking outside and heading towards his car. “And let’s leave this place, before the café closes.”
“Coming!” Hange shouted, following after Levi with a wide grin.
***
It was a Christmas Day already, and Levi was standing on a porch of his mother's house, waiting for Hange to show up. Knowing his friend, she would be late for at least ten minutes, so Levi leaned against the door, debating if he should go back inside to get his pack of cigarettes. His mother hated when he smoked, but it was going to be a stressful day, Levi knew it. Even without the memories of his last Christmas, nagging at him, there was Kenny he had to deal with, and the relationship between him and his uncle was at the very least, strained. If he wished to end this evening without strangling Kenny, Levi needed a lot more than just one cigarette.
However, before he could decide, he saw Hange at the other end of a street. She was walking with a spring in her step, dangling a couple of bags in her hands.
Levi crossed hands on his chest, watching her approach.
"What is this shit?" he pointed to the bags she was carrying.
"Presents!" she grinned widely.
“Presents?”
"Yes! For you, your mother and uncle."
Levi didn't drop the look of skepticism. "There are four bags."
"Of course, silly," Hange shook her head. "I've got two presents for you."
"Two?" Levi frowned. "Why two? I got only one for you."
"Well, it's not my fault your birthday is on Christmas," Hange complained. "Speaking of!" she spread her hands, "it's time for a hug, birthday boy!"
Levi cringed. "Is there a way to avoid it?"
"No!" Hange announced cheerfully. "C'mon, I'm waiting!"
Levi sighed, but obliged and came closer, letting Hange wrap her hands around him. She hummed happily, nuzzling his cheek.
"Ah, that was a good one," she said, as she took a step back, releasing Levi. He, however, couldn’t agree with her statement. It was a good hug, but it ended too quickly for his liking. Well, it wasn't like he could ask Hange to repeat it. She would agree, of course, but his reputation would suffer tremendously.
"Goddamn it, four-eyes," Levi scowled, when he took a good look on Hange's hands. "How many times do I have to remind you about the gloves?"
He grabbed her red and freezing palms in his, softly rubbing them. "Let's get inside, before you freeze to death."
"You worry too much," Hange rolled her eyes, but didn't try to shake Levi off and let him lead her inside.
The moment they crossed the threshold, Kuchel was already standing in front of the door, smiling from ear to ear. Levi awkwardly let go of Hange's hands and took a step back, allowing his mother to welcome her.
"You came!" Kuchel laid her hands onto Hange's shoulders, kissing both of her cheeks. "I'm so happy to see you, my dear!" she took a step back and faced Levi, giving him a stern gaze. “And you told Hange wouldn’t accept our invitation. You should bring her over more often.”
Levi looked down, mumbling something so quietly, neither Hange, nor Kuchel were able to catch it.
Watching the scene in front of her, seeing an embarrassed Levi, who was just scolded by his mother, Hange couldn’t help – she doubled over with laughter.
“Sorry!” she raised a hand, still chuckling. “I’m just— Levi looks so much like you, Mrs. Ackerman, it’s adorable!”
“Ah,” Kuchel smiled, reaching out to ruffle Levi’s hair. “He was always his mother’s boy.”
Levi groaned, desperately trying to hide his red face from Hange’s amused gaze. “Can you two please stop humiliating me?”
“And here she is!” Levi had never wanted the Earth to swallow him more than he did in this exact moment. He recognized that deep, booming voice instantly. “The only person who can tolerate my dear nephew!” Kenny walked out of the room to welcome them.
That infuriating smirk was already plastered on his face, and Levi cursed under his breath. It would be a very long evening.
“Hange, my darling!” Kenny took a step closer, meaning to take Hange by the hand. Levi was instantly by her side, glaring at his uncle.
“Watch your hands, old man,” he spoke darkly.
Kenny whistled. “Someone’s jealous, huh?”
Before Levi could retaliate and come up with another insult, his mother came to stand between them, wearing an annoyed expression on her face.
“Stop it, boys,” she sighed. “Kenny, don’t pick up on Levi, and you, Levi,” Kuchel shook her head. “Be nice for once, alright?”
“Yes,” Kenny and Levi answered in unison. Kuchel beamed.
“Now you two take your coats and shoes off and then join us in the living room. Hange?” Kuchel turned to her. “You’ll stay the night with us, right?”
“I…” Hange scratched her neck, unsure.
“Stay,” Levi whispered, nudging her in the side. “Mom already prepared the guest room.”
“I guess I have no choice then,” she grinned. “Thank you for your hospitality, Mrs. Ackerman.”
“Don’t mention,” Kuchel waved her off. “And please, call me just Kuchel. Levi talks so often about you, I feel like you’re a part of our family.”
“Ah, a-alright,” Hange stared at Levi, but he turned his face another way, stubbornly refusing to meet her eyes. His mother was exaggerating, he didn’t talk about Hange that much.
Kuchel sent them another warm smile, and then left to the kitchen.
"Aw," Hange pouted as soon as Levi took off his coat.
"What's wrong now?"
"You're wearing a simple shirt and cardigan.”
"And?" Levi prompted, feeling his patience go thin.
"Why not a Christmas sweater?" Hange clasped her hands, frustrated.
Levi looked at Hange's bright red sweater with a big reindeer right in the center of it. "No thanks," he mumbled. "My eyes hurt just looking at the monstrosity you're wearing."
"It's called fashion, Levi, you should look it up sometimes."
"Says a person, who can wear the same shirt for two weeks in a row. By the way," Levi outstretched his hand. "Give me it."
"Give you what?"
"My present, four-eyes, give it to me."
"A-ah," Hange resolutely shook her head. "Wait until midnight."
Levi gritted his teeth in frustration. "Fine, you can keep the other one, but you have two presents. Give me the one for my birthday."
"Nope."
"Hange, today is my birthday, I deserve to receive my birthday gift."
"Have some patience, will you? I'll give it to you at midnight."
"Why can't you—"
"Let's go!" Hange pushed him forward, leading him away from the presents. "Your family is already waiting for us."
***
As Levi watched Hange chat with his mother and uncle, sharing jokes and stories about him, he couldn't help but wonder - could it be that Hange actually forgot about the incident that had happened last year? It was the only possible explanation, she was so calm, so nonchalant, while he was practically brimming with nervous energy, trying to think about literally anything to distract himself from the awkward memories.
Noticing his stare, Hange smiled and winked at him, before resuming her story about Levi's meeting with investors. She wasn't nervous in a slightest and Levi decided to follow her example. If Hange was unbothered, what reason did he have to panic? If she didn't remember the events of last Christmas, he should try to forget about it too. *** "Hange, honey, come here," Kuchel beckoned, interrupting Hange's conversation with Kenny. "There is something I want you to see."
"Oh," as soon as Hange saw what Kuchel was holding out to her, she rubbed her hands in anticipation. "Is it what I think it is?"
Kuchel nodded, wearing the same giddy expression as Hange. "It's our family photo album."
Levi, who just came back from the bathroom, felt his heart drop. His mother wouldn't dare...
"Mom, it's my birthday," he reminded, sitting down next to her. "You can't embarrass me at my birthday."
"But Levi," Kuchel pouted. "I'm not embarrassing you! I just want to show Hange, how cute you were as a child."
"Yeah," Kenny chimed in. "She needs to see what your face looked like before you got a severe case of constipation."
"Shut up," Levi hissed, glaring daggers at his uncle.
Meanwhile, Hange was already opening the album...
"Oh my god!" she exclaimed delightfully, staring at the first page. "Levi, you looked so cute! You were the most adorable baby ever!"
"He still is," Kuchel softly patted Levi's cheek.
Levi groaned, covering his face with a hand. It was the worst moment of his life.
"Look at this face!" Hange continued to coo. "And these pretty eyes!"
Levi's cheeks were on fire.
"Tell about this to anyone, four-eyes," he warned quietly, careful not to let his mother hear. "And you're dead, got it?"
"Of course," Hange smiled, amusement swirling in her gaze. "My lips are sealed."
 ***
As the evening progressed into the night, Kuchel excused herself, insisting that she needed to go and rest. Levi and Hange were sitting on a sofa in the living room and watching TV. As they were on the second part of Die Hard, Kenny left too, claiming that there was something he had to take care off. Начало формы
“He’s definitely up to something unlawful,” Levi commented off-handedly as soon as Kenny closed the door after himself.
“Oh?” Hange grinned, muting the TV. “What do you think he’s going to do? Rob someone? Murder?”
“I don’t care,” Levi replied. “And you shouldn’t care too. The lesser you know, the better.”
“You’re no fun,” she smacked his shoulder, before collapsing on his lap with a quiet giggle.
“Get off,” Levi complained. “I’m not your pillow.”
“But you’re warm,” Hange wiggled a little, taking a more comfortable position. “And soft.”
“Shut up,” he sighed, trying to ignore the pleasant feeling that appeared because of Hange’s words. “It’s almost midnight,” he nodded at the clock on the wall. “So get up and bring me my present.”
“Oh my,” Hange looked at him with a sly look. “You really can’t wait to receive it, huh?”
“Give it, four-eyes.”
“Fine!” she huffed, getting to her feet. “But I want to see my present too.”
“Hurry up!” Levi called after her.
He rose from the sofa and headed to his room, where Hange’s present was hidden. When he came to the living room, Hange was already sitting on the floor by the Christmas tree, wearing a wide, excited grin.
"My present," Hange demanded, reaching with her hand.
Sitting down next to her, Levi rolled his eyes and passed the package to her. Instantly, Hange started opening, tearing the paper like an overexcited child. Levi glared at the pile of paper on the floor, but Hange was too excited to notice his dark expression.
"Oh!" she breathed out, as soon as she saw the present. "Levi, is that—"
"Your hands are always cold," Levi explained, watching Hange try the new pair of gloves he got her. "I know it's not much, but..."
"No!" Hange protested, pressing the gloved palm to her chest. "They're perfect! So warm and soft!"
"Good," Levi let himself relax. "It's my first time doing something like this, so I was afraid—"
"Wait!" Hange shrieked, eyes wide. "You made them by yourself?"
"Yeah," Levi said with a frown. "It's a not a big deal, though. Knitting isn't so hard, so..."
"You've knitted the gloves for me..." Hange whispered with a big, dreamy smile on her face. She kept staring at the gloves like they were a damn miracle. Levi couldn't look away from her, as a warm feeling spread through his veins. He could never guess Hange would like his present that much.
"Thank you!" Hange wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing him closer for a brief hug. "Well now!" she grinned, letting go of him. "It's time for your presents!"
“Finally,” Levi muttered.
Reaching behind her, Hange handed him the first package. "That's your Christmas present," she said softly.
Levi nodded, taking it from her hands and then carefully unwrapping. Once he was finished, he put the pieces of paper in a neat pile. Then, he looked at his present. It was a sweater, an exact copy of the one Hange was wearing right now, only slightly smaller and green, wherein Hange's was red.
"Matching sweaters!" Hange announced gleefully. "Put it on!"
Reluctantly - the sweater was kind of ugly - Levi put it over his shirt. He felt like an idiot, but the beam he received from Hange was making it kinda of worth it.
"You look really handsome," Hange noted, making Levi's heart skip a bit. "I should have gotten you reindeer antlers, though. They would have completed the look," she added, ruining the sentiment completely.
"Shut up," Levi grumbled. "How give me another one."
"I feel kinda stupid about it now," Hange began, fidgeting a little. The gesture was so uncharacteristic to her that Levi arched his eyebrow, looking at her in surprise. "Especially after your mother showed me a different one, and it contains cuter pictures," Hange smiled at that. "But, well, here. Happy birthday, Levi."
Levi greedily snatched the present from her and took off the wrapping paper. Inside there was a book - a photo album - Levi realized as he took a better look.
He opened the first page, and saw a picture of himself and Hange. Hange was smiling into the camera, one hand was making the piece sign, while the other was wrapped around his shoulders. His face was as emotionless as always, but there was a soft look in his eyes.
"I put our photo at the first page, because I know my face is your favorite," Hange teased with a sly smile.
Levi didn't answer - there was no need to confirm that Hange's words were actually true. Instead he turned the page. The next one showed him, Erwin, Mike and Nanaba, looking relaxed and slightly drunk. Hange obviously took this picture, since she wasn't in it. Then he saw a photo of him and Mike building a sand castle and after that a picture of him and Erwin, while they were playing Mario Kart on Erwin’s sofa. On the next page, there was a group shot of every employee of their firm. He, Erwin and Hange were stood at the center, with Erwin's arms on their shoulders. After that, it was a picture of Levi with their interns, Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Jean, Sasha and Connie. It was taken after they finished a seminar, Levi remembered. The kids were on cloud nine, since it meant that they could finally rest after a long and tiring weekend. They did well on the seminar, so when they asked for a picture with them, Levi just couldn't say no.
"You look like a proud dad here," Hange commented, leaning over his shoulder to look at the photo.
Levi let out a noncommittal grunt and continuing flipping over the pages. There was a lot more, almost three dozens of pages and each one showed a dear memory.
"I know that you like this stuff, keeping small mementos," Hange said. It was true - as much as Levi loved order and cleanliness, he also gathered all kinds of tickets, receipts and other small trinkets that reminded him of good memories. He kept all of them hidden in his desk drawer, though, so he was surprised that Hange knew about it.
"Thank you," he told her.
"You like it?"
"I love it," he confessed. He didn't say it often, probably had never actually said it out loud, but he valued, loved all of his friends. They were the best thing in his life. Of course, he couldn't say it now too. There was a reputation he had to uphold after all. "I've never seen a bigger collection of ugly faces."
Hange laughed then, throwing her head back. Levi watched her with a small smile.
"Happy birthday," she repeated, putting her head back on his lap.
Levi didn't protest this time, simply stared down at her. The Christmas lights were dancing across her face, making Hange look softer around the edges. Without thinking, Levi reached out to brush some hair out of her forehead. Hange smiled, looking up at him.
"Hey," she began. Levi nodded, motioning for her to continue. He stretched his hand, taking his teacup. "Do you remember last Christmas?"
The hand with a cup froze midair, as he stared at Hange with wide eyes. He thought she was going to launch in another lengthy and boring story, not bring this thing up.
"I don't," he answered stiffly, fighting the urge to get up and run. Hange shouldn't have known about this.
"You really don't?" Hange asked, disappointment in her voice. "We were at the party at Erwin's place, I had a bit too much eggnog and—"
And then she staggered out on a balcony, while Levi was having a smoke break. She was clearly drunk and a thought flashed in Levi's mind that he should bring her home or lay her down in one of Erwin's guest rooms, before she did something stupid. And that's what she did in the next moment. Something stupid. She snatched the cigarette from his hand and threw it away. Levi opened his mouth to reprimand her for that, but wasn't unable to actually say anything. Because Hange— Hange was kissing him. Before he could react to it in any way - push her away, bring her closer, entangle his hand in her hair - anything, Hange took a step back.
Whatever was reflecting on his face, Hange didn't like it. She pursed her lips in thought and a line formed between her eyebrows.
"That's not good," she said finally. "Just— just forget anything happen."
And just like that she was gone, giving Levi no time to respond and leaving him alone at a dark, cold balcony.
The next morning, she gave no indication that that kiss had ever happened.
"You do remember," Hange poked his cheek with a finger. "I can see it in your eyes."
"Then why the fuck have you asked?" the hand that wasn't holding a teacup, tightened into fist. What the fuck Hange wanted from him? She told him to forget, didn't she?
"I just wanted to— doesn't matter now," she looked away from him. "I've got my answer already.
Hange moved, trying to get up. Levi pressed on her shoulder, pushing her back.
"You were the one, who told me to forget it.”
"Because you clearly weren't interested!"
Levi frowned. "Who said that?"
"You!" Hange pointed a finger at him, almost hitting him in the nose.
Levi waved her hand away. "I've never said such thing."
"You didn't need to. Your face said it for you."
"I don't understand what you're talking about."
"You don't understand?" Hange huffed. "When I kissed you, you were scowling!"
Levi crossed hands on his chest. "That's how my face always looks like. You know it."
"You didn't kiss me back!" she accused.
"You didn't give me the time to do it!"
Hange felt silent after that. She kept looking at his face, as though searching for something there.
"Does it mean that... you wanted to kiss me?"
"Yes," Levi sighed. "For a very long time now."
"Oh," Hange's cheeks became an adorable shade of pink. "That's a bit unexpected. But... If I were to kiss you again—"
"I'd more than welcome it."
"Alright," she nodded, getting up. Hange leaned in, until their lips were almost touching. She glanced in his eyes, checking his reaction. Then she slowly moved closer, leaving a gentle kiss on his lips. She withdrew almost instantly, looking more than a little embarrassed.
"So," she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "Did you like that?"
"It will take me some time to get used to it," Levi admitted.
"We can take it slow," Hange offered. "Would you like that?"
"Yeah," Levi agreed. "I would like that."
"C'mon then," Hange got to her feet and then held her hand out to Levi, helping him up as well. "Let's finish the movie."
He followed Hange back to the sofa and then resumed the movie. At first, he sat at the other end of sofa, deliberately putting some distance between them, in case Hange felt awkward. She rolled her eyes at the gesture, moving closer and laying her head on his thigh.
"Is this okay?" she asked, looking up.
"Yeah," Levi carefully put his hand on her shoulder and started rubbing it softly. "More than okay."
Hange smiled and turned her attention to the TV screen. Levi smiled back, staring down at her.
It was his best Christmas ever. Much better than the last one.
Run to the Nanny - A Brahms Heelshire Fanfiction. Prologue/Chapter 1
This is an x OC fanfiction, hope you all don't mind.
Disclaimer: This story will contain violence, sexual implications, implications of ab*se, and murder/character death.
PS: This story follows the plot of The Boy 2016, in this universe/Au, Greta never came to become Brahms' Nanny. Instead, my OC is the person to take that job. Prologue
I slammed the door closed behind me, leaning against the wood, the grooves in the simple design of the door a texture that pleased my troubled thoughts for a short moment. I quickly sniffled and wiped at my damp cheeks, my eyes red and bloodshot from the tears that flowed relentlessly. I hiccupped, locking the door before pushing myself off of it and walking over to the sink which sat a couple feet in front of me. I eyed myself in the mirror and saw how much of a wreck I was. Messy hair, baggy eyelids, red cheeks and eyes. If my friends saw, they would definitely worry... at least worry more than they already have been. I hiccupped yet again, sniffling more. The tears didn't stopped.
I glanced around the bathroom I resided in in distress. How could I have known this would've happened. I knew it was best to avoid confrontation. What a mistake it was to have that kind of optimistic mindset. I sat there wondering what I was to do now that I had gotten myself stuck inside such a situation. I took a series of deep breaths to calm myself. I exhaled softly through my nose, finally feeling the pounding in my chest calm. I turned on the sink, not caring what temperature the water was before I began splashing it in my face, trying to calm my swollen eyes, and my heated face. I blindly turned the faucet off, grabbing a towel to pat my face dry before slowly standing straight.
Though I looked better, I didn't feel that well. There was still so much weighing on my mind. "God..." I whimpered. I bit down on my lip. There was a sudden moment of silence within me. I recalled an ad that I had seen in the paper this morning, and and idea struck. "I gotta take that job."
Chapter 1
The black cab I had taken out into the countryside, the scenery of the UK, especially one so filled with nature was definitely the break I needed from my life. I looked out the window as the drive went on for quite some time, and a smile of contentment graced my lips.
I wasn't a fan of running from my problems, but I knew that if I had stayed behind to deal with what was waiting for me, I would be trapped in a cycle that I couldn't think my way out of. My mind was sometimes far too dark for my own good. This job would do me good.
Soon, the cab slowly pulled to a gate, which lead to the extravagant manor. The building in which I would be staying. I smiled more.
"Wow... It's gorgeous..." I mumbled to myself, smiling more. The cab driver took notice of my comment and grinned a crooked tooth, but genuine smile.
"Sure is, miss. You're quite the lucky one, you are."
He said with a smile. He had to get out of the cab to open the gate, but after that it was a smooth drive, and he pulled into the driveway. I carefully got out of the cab and walked to the trunk, grabbing my bags. The cab driver walked inside, seemingly without me, and I was confused for a moment before he came back out a little bit later. He walked over to me and helped me with my bags.
Once we were in the parlor, I pulled out my wallet to pay him, but he quickly let me know that that would not be necessary.
"No need, miss, the Heelshires already took care o' that. They said they would like you to wait in the parlor until they came to get you."
I gave him a smile and nodded, setting my things down.
"Ah, thank you. Have a nice day!" I say softly, the man wishing me well before he left.
I sighed softly, having been waiting in the parlor for just a few minutes. All I had taken with me for entertainment was a sketchbook and some books I've been meaning to read. I hoped I wouldn't have to take anything out before the Heelshires came down to greet me.
The door suddenly opened, making me jump from my seat on the ground. I quickly turn to see who it was that had come in, and felt a little twinge of disappointment when it was neither of the Heelshires.
"Ah- Hello... I didn't mean to startle you... I didn't know you were here..." The man said, holding a box of groceries. I felt myself smile warmly before a sigh left me.
"Oh no- It's alright. Barely scared me at all." I said, assuring him that I wasn't as scared as I may have made it seem. "I think I'm just nervous, is all."
The man smiled at me warmly, chuckling a little. "I understand. I'm Malcolm, I deliver groceries to the manor for the Heelshires." He lifts his hand.
I lift my hand to meet his, giving him a firm handshake, possibly more firm than he was expecting. "I'm Paris, Paris Valentine."
He raised a brow as he pulled his hand away. "Interesting name. Unique."
"Thanks... I... Actually get that a lot." I say, my smile growing bashful.
"Not surprised. I don't hear a name like that very often.... Or at all for that matter."
I chuckle softly, my cheeks a slight pink from flattery. A compliment from Malcolm wasn't a small one, considering the fact that he was quite handsome. Strong jaw, brown hair, deep eyes, stubble. He wasn't bad looking at all....
But he wasn't my type. I could already see myself forming a brotherly bond with him.
"Ah, Malcolm." A feminine, but stern and formal like voice called from the stairs.
We both turn to find Mrs. Heelshire making her way down to the parlor.
"And you must be Paris." She said, voice not exactly welcoming, but not necessarily cold. I smile and nod.
"Mrs. Heelshire, it's an honor to meet you." I say. I notice she didn't offer her hand to mine, so I didn't offer mine either.
"Well, We mustn't delay, Ms. Valentine, Brahms has waited for quite some time now." She said before turning curtly. I blink, then realized I had no time to just say goodbye to Malcolm.
I quickly followed Mrs. Heelshire up the stairs, not wanting to get lost or waste any more time. She gives me a very quick tour as we pass some rooms, leading me to one where, as we enter, I see Mr. Heelshire kneeling by a chair and speaking gently, and sweetly. He must be talking to the child I’m meant to care for.
“Daddy.” Mrs. Heelshire calls, causing Mr. Heelshire to turn and stand, blocking the child from my view. “This is the Nanny, Ms. Valentine.”
The man smiled at me warmly, but didn’t offer to shake my hand just like Mrs. Heelshire did. I smile in return and he steps aside to reveal….
A doll…?
I blink a little, shocked. They look at me, seeming completely serious as they introduce him as if he was a real boy. I open my mouth to speak, utterly confused. Eventually, after a moment of silence, I crack a crooked smile and carefully step over, gently taking Brahms’ hand and shaking it. “It’s lovely to meet you, Brahms. I hope we can get along.” I say softly, then stand straight, folding my hands out in front of me. They seemed satisfied with that, and I smiled a little more. Mrs. Heelshire then instructs me to follow her as she picks up the doll. She walks me through their daily routine, Mr. Heelshire handling the rest. From what he told me… I felt I understood what he meant when he spoke about Brahms the way he did. So I naturally gave him a smile of understanding and nodded. “I understand.” He nodded, smiling for a moment. “Good… Good…”
We went back inside the manor, the darkness of night looming over us as we ate dinner. Once that was done, Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire put Brahms to bed.
Mrs. Heelshire looked over at me from the bed they kneeled by. “Ms. Valentine, would you mind giving us a moment alone with Brahms.”
I look up, seeming surprised, before smiling. “Of course not.”
In response, I quickly reach over and close the door, turning away to find something to distract myself. Eventually, the door opened after some muffled, incoherent talking. I quickly turn and smile at them but… Mrs. Heelshire didn’t seem all that ecstatic.
“It seems Brahms has taking a liking to you… He’ll take you as his Nanny, if you’ll have him.”
“That… That’s great!! I’ll gladly take care of Brahms.” I say softly, trying to sound more excited than how the woman in front of me looked.
She nodded at me curtly… and then they both past me as they went off to their room… for bed.
I headed to the guest room where I would be staying and got settled, unpacking my things and preparing for bed and the morning ahead of me. I felt a little… unsettled as I took a shower, occasionally shuddering. I wasn’t sure if it was from nerves or my own paranoia. I do my best to shrug it off, getting dried off and dressed before climbing into bed.
SuperChat September 2- No Powers
Masterlist
Adrien and Marinette took in the beautiful city of Metropolis as they stepped out of their hotel. "I owe you twenty bucks Mari. This place is beautiful." Marinette snorted, shaking, her head as he offered her his arm.
"What a gentleman, if only we weren't gay.” Marinette said, causing Adrien to laugh and shake his head. They started walking to the park they’d seen on their way to the hotel last night.
“Mari you’re only Bi. I’m clearly the gay one here. Sadly it took dating you to realize that not only were you my sister, but I preferred men.” This caused both of them to share a look before bursting into laughter. Adrien’s loud and eye catching, Marinette’s soft and fairy like, it’s safe to say they drew a lot of people’s eyes. Though neither of them noticed their admirers as they walked. They were too focused on each other.
“Thanks for coming with Adrien, I’m nervous for this show. Not only is it a big show with a lot of publicity, I haven’t even started on the main piece of the show and I only have a week and a half.” Marinette rambled on about her final outfit not noticing Adrien smiling at her fondly. “ I don’t know how I’m going to do this Adrien. An entire outfit inspired by Metropolis-ugh! I should’ve come here months ago! Now I’m on such a tight schedule! I’m going to fail and my name in fashion disgraced! I’ll have to leave the country and work at a coffee shop for the rest of my life!” This caused Adrien to laugh again as they walked into the park. He stopped causing Marinette to stop with him. Adrien turned to her and grabbed her forearms looking her dead in the eye.
“You worry too much Marinette. I know you’ll be able to pull this off, you’ve done more in a shorter amount of time. If anyone can draw inspiration from this beautiful city, it’s you.” He let go of her right arm and pulled out her sketchbook placing it in her hand. “You’re going to sit underneath that tree by the lake and take in the park. I am going to run to the cafe we passed, get myself something that will root my teeth and make my old dietitian cry and you something with so much espresso the barista is worried!” Marinette laughed softly and nodded taking her sketchbook completely from Adrien and pulling out her pencils.
“Very well, I shall sit down and wait for you to bring me my caffeine death. Make sure to text me if it’s going to take you longer than twenty minutes. Metropolis is much safer than most cities, but you know I worry.” Adrien laughed agreeing before heading off to the cafe, a bounce in his step.
He entered the cafe taking a deep breath, enjoying the smell of coffee beans. He was quick to get in line studying the menu, he hummed softly deciding when he would get. He stepped up and pulled out his wallet smiling cheerful at the barista. “Hello! I would like one chocolate chip frappe, extra chocolate chip, and a red velvet latte with as many expresso you are legally allowed to give!” The girl froze while putting his order in, looking up at him. “Yes, as much as possible.” He said laughing a bright smile on his face the girl nodded before giving him the total. Adrian happily paid, before putting twenty in the tip jar. He stepped to the side allowing others to move up as he waited for his drinks. He thanked them profusely before walking out of the cafe. On his way back to the park he noticed a crew of photographers and reporters standing outside the park. He walked past hoping none would realize he was former model Adrien Agreste. However one reporter caught his eye, a tall man with black hair and stunning blue eyes hidden behind glasses. Adrien paused looking at the man, until he realized the man was staring at him too. He blushed before turning hurrying quickly over to the tree Marinette was under. Jon watched him go before his attention was taken by his photographer again, but his thoughts remained on beautiful green eyes.
Jon was there to write a joint piece on the newly renovated park, he and a few others were dispersing across the park to take pictures and right notes about the new improvements. He and Megan set off towards the small pond together, he wrote down all the improvements while Megan took pictures. Megan hurried over to a couple sitting together under the tree. “Excuse me, we’re doing a piece on the renovations done to the park and I was hoping to get a picture of you relaxing under the tree.” Jon walked over and his eyes widened when blue met green. Finally able to take in the other man’s appearance and Jon couldn’t help but think he was the definition of beauty. A few seconds later he looked over at the girl he was sitting with and was astonished by her beauty. They were obviously a power couple together, Jon was almost jealous by their beauty. He was certainly jealous of Marinette, who he assumed was Adrien’s girlfriend.
“Yes we’d love to get pictures of you and your girlfriend.” He said smiling at Adrien, his smile wavered when the two burst into laughter. ‘Everything they do is beautiful.” Marinette smiled softly at the two placing her sketchbook down.
“We’d be more than happy to have a picture taken, however we are not a couple. I’m Marinette and this is my adoptive brother Adrien.” He introduced himself as hope swelled in Jon’s heart while Megan took pictures of them together, after Jon asked them what they thought of the park writing in his notebook. They chatted shortly before Megan pulled him away for more pictures. His eyes were constantly drifting back to Adrien sitting with Marinette. It was an hour later that he finally was able to break away, just in time as Marinette and Adrien were about to leave the park.
“Adrien!” Jon called out running up to him, Adrien turned looking at him in surprise. He shared a brief look with Marinette before giving Jon his full attention. “ Before you go, I was hoping I could take you out tonight?” Adrien blinked confused, while Marinette’s eyes widened a bright smile covering her face.
“Take me out? You mean like, on a date?” He said with surprise clear in his voice when he realized. Jon shifted nervously, positive he was about to be rejected.
“He’d love to! We are staying at Madeira just down the road, our place is 748, it's one of the penthouses. Be there at six thirty, he’ll be ready for you.” Marinette said excitedly before pulling out her sketchbook and writing down Adrien’s number, she ripped it out before giving it to Jon. “Now we must go! I need to get fabric, then help get you ready for your date!” Marinette pulled him away excitedly, and Adrien only had a few seconds to turn around and smile at Jon.
“I’ll see you at six thirty Jon!”
Jon was ten minutes early that night and stood outside the door nervously debating knocking or waiting until six thirty. Marinette decided for him when she opened giving him a mischievous look. “You’re here early.” She teased giggling softly when Jon blushed stuttering. She let him in allowing him to see their current home. He was greeted by a toy poodle who barked softly looking up at him. Marinette picked her up, smiling softly.
“This is Tikki, my poodle, over there on the couch in Adrien’s cat Plagg.”
Jon chuckled, giving a hello to Tikki petting the poodle gently. His eyes strayed to the manikin in the corner an unfinished outfit pin to it and cloth surrounding it. He surveyed the outfit and then the multiple garment bags hanging on a rack.
“Are you here for the fashion show?” He asked turning back to Marinette, who raised an eyebrow giving him an amused look. “Or do you just like designing clothing?” Marinette snorted smiling.
“You don’t pay attention to fashion much do you?” Jon shook his head causing Marinette to smile more. “I am not just here for the fashion show, I am running it. All the outfits there will be the designers under me, as well as mine over there. So you don’t know Adrien at all?” Jon shook his head again looking amused.
“Why would I know Adrien?” Marinette just gave him a mischievous smile telling him to ask during his date. Adrien came out soon after giving Jon a beautiful smile when their eyes met.
“Wow, you look amazing, like really really amazing.” Jon said smiling brightly offering his arm to Adrien. They walked out the door together laughing when Marinette told them not to stay out too late.
Jon managed to get them reservations at one of Metropolis’ most popular restaurants. Adrien was definitely impressed with their date so far, it helped that Jon was one of the most attractive people he’d ever seen. Although he could easily tell that Jon didn’t realize his own attractiveness. They made small talk asking small things about each other’s life until their dinner came. “So I gotta ask, what made you ask me on this date?” Adrien asked, taking a bite of his spaghetti. Jon blushed slightly as he chewed, debating how to answer before deciding to stick with the truth.
“You’re eyes, you have beautiful green eyes. I mean everything about you is beautiful.” Adrien blushed slightly but he smiled at the compliment. “Actually when I first saw you and Marinette together I thought you were a couple. It didn’t help that you two were both so damn beautiful. I really thought you were a couple!” Adrien snorted, looking up at Jon through his eyelashes.
“Funny enough, Mari and I actually dated. She helped me discover my sexuality and I realized I didn’t see her as anything more than a sister. I even moved in with her and her parents when my father...when my father went away.” Jon was quick to change the subject, when Adrien’s eyes looked sad.
“So you're here for the fashion show Marinette is running? Are you going to be in it?” He asked, causing Adrien to laugh, which made him happy. “You are certainly beautiful enough to be a model.” Jon complimented him causing Adrien to laugh again.
“I was a model growing up and I hated it. Marinette asks me to model occasionally, but it's only for parties or pictures for her website.” He took a sip of his drink leaning back in his chair. “I actually just graduated college and am taking time off, so I decided to travel with Mari.  I majored in Chemistry, it was always one of my favorite classes, so I decided to make a career out of it” Jon smiled leaning back as well.
“I followed in my parent’s footsteps, both were reporters at the Daily Plant and I always loved writing. So it was an easy decision to make for my future.”
They spent the rest of the night getting to know each other until they ended up outside the siblings penthouse. Adrien was leaning against the door looking up at Jon. They just stood talking softly until Adrien yawned, causing Jon to suggest they saw goodnight. Adrien grabbed his arm and squeezed it smiling softly.
“I’d like to go out with you again Jon. I had a lot of fun tonight.” Jon nodded, smiling brightly before pulling out his phone and unlocking it. Adrien took it typing his number in and then texting himself before handing it back.
“I work tomorrow but if you’re free afterward I’d like to go out again.” Adrian agreed before leaning up and kissing Jon’s cheek.
“I’d love to, just let me know the time and place. I’m probably only going to be here unless Mari needs more fabric. See you tomorrow Jon.” Adrien winked at Jon, before entering the penthouse.
Blind Date p1
REAL LIFE
COUPLE TBS X READER
RATING ADORABLE AF
Tumblr media
I sat with my friend luke as we had some coffee outside of a local london cafe.
"How's things with you and arthur?' I asked before having a sip of my tea
"Great got the ticket confirmations for our trip to south korea" he smiled
"Awesome" I laughed
"You have got to get back on the dating game"
"Eh, I like dating I just don't like the apps and stuff you know, tinder is just people looking for sex I want something more then two shags and another blocked number" I sighed
"You know I had this exact conversation with someone earlier" he laughs
"Luke I am not going out with Mikey so his parents think he's straight we've been over this"
"Not Mikey,"
"Who then?"
"A mate of mine, little older then you, into motorbikes, fits your aesthetic-"
"I don't need a boyfriend who fits my aesthetic"
"Don't you?"
"Shut up"
"And I was having this exact conversation with him this morning, he hates the Apps and wants to meet some nice girly for more then a fling"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, trust me dudes a boarded line technophobe" he says "I had to go over and show him why he kept getting instagram notifications"
Which made me giggle
"You see, how about I see what he's doing and arrange you two a little blind date?"
"I guess so Luke" I shrug
I sat at my vanity in my tights, bra and underwear, slowly taking my hair out each curler and brushing it down a little so the curls where not quiet so intense doing my make up nothing too heavy as it is first date and a blind date at that. Once I was done I got up and forced my heels onto my feet already hating it when my phone went off
Luke: hey hun, your date just left and is on his way to the restaurant have fun you too ;)
I slipped my dress on and packed my handbag slipping my Jacket over my shoulder,
Y/n: okay tell him I'm on my way, how will I know him?
I locked up my house and headed down the driveway as my phone went off again
Luke : he says he's waiting outside with a cigarette and a present for you
I was worried but I kept walking down the dark, half broken London streets, all I had to light my way was the street lamps and my phone as I followed the maps to the restaurant, the clicking of my heels against the pavement, the sounds of cars and buses rushing by, why did I wear these shoes? I hate these shoes. Why did I walk? Why didn't I just get a taxi? Ughh I am so having a large red wine when I get there. I saw I was just down the street from the place so I put my phone away and checked my make up and reflection in the window of a closed shop. I was all good so I took a breath a walked up to the restaurant initial I panicked as I didn't see anyone, but I saw a little down the street where some chairs and tables sat for the restaurant during the day, it had a black metal fence to seperate it from the rest of the pavement, a man stood there.
He was taller then me, if I had to guess from here he wasn't six feet but high fives atleast but I think the shoes helped. He had black dress shoes, a black pair of suit pants with something in his pocket, a tight leather belt a black button down tucked into the pants with a slight patten I wasn't sure what of in it, he had a black slightly trench coat like jacket over him a ciggertte in his hand, watch on his wrist, he looked nervous in his face even if he still looked attractive, his hair fixed to one side alot clearly still a little wet from where he had washed it. He was the only one around so I went closer catching his attention away from the ciggertte in his fingers, his eyes glanced to me looking me up and down quickly taking in alot of me much like I did to him moments ago. He put the ciggertte out on the metal fence and smiled
"Y/n? By any chance?"
"Yeah" I nodded
"Ahh great, I was getting worried" he says
"Yeah I uhh I walked" I smiled "sorry luke didn't"
"Oh, Thomas" he smiled offering his hand
"Lovely to meet you" I smiled taking it he gave my hand a gentle kiss
"Lovely to meet you too, he uh he didn't say you'd be so beautiful"
"Ohh well thank you very much" I blushed "he didn't say how handsome you where"
"Your sweet, ohh uhh I got you something" he smiled moving his hands to his pocket "I wanted get you a real one but all the shops where closed so I thought then you can keep it longer" he smiled heading me a silk rose
"Ohh thank you, it's beautiful" I smiled happily taking it "shall we go?"
"Well if you'd like to have dinner with me?"
"I'd love to" I smiled offering my arm, he happily linked arms with me and lead me inside he delt with the hostess and we where lead to a table that overlooked the outside garden space of the restaurant closed up at the moment for the night I went to get my chair but he stopped me
"No, no let me" he says pulling my chair out for me
"Ohh why thank you" I giggled letting him tuck it under me and then take his own seat across the table "your very sweet"
"First impressions you know" he smiled fiddling with his hair
"Can I get you two started with some drinks?" The waiter asked bringing some meal menus I hadn't even looked at the drinks one on the table already but I knew what I wanted
"I'll have a large glass of red wine please" I smiled
"Very good madam, and for you sir?"
"Uhh I'll take a large cola, I'm driving" he answered
"Aww don't make me drink all by myself" I laughed
"Ughh alright, white wine but make it a spritzer"
"Very good," he says before heading off
"Sorry I shouldn't" I began
"It's okay, your right. One drink with you isn't going to hurt" he says
"So you drive here?"
"Yeah, it was pretty far so I just drove" he shrugs "you said you walked?"
"Yeah, I thought I'd have a wine and I didn't want a taxi"
"Perhaps if we… go out again I'll have to come by and pick you up"
"If?"
"If" he smiled "you ever been here before?" He asked as we both glanced over the food menus it was all so impressive and I had no concept what half of it even was
"No never, have you?"
"Once but they have… changed things since I was here last"
"What sort of things?"
"The thing I liked has disappeared from the menu"
"Aww that's disappointing"
"Yeah, but hopefully that will be my only disappointment this evening" he says gently moving his hand across the table so his fingers grazed mine not looking up from the menu as he did.
"Let's hope" I smiled gently moving my fingers against his own the waiter returned and we out in our order and he dropped off our drinks "so? How do you know luke?" I asked
"Uh, not all that well actually." He says "I went to school with arthur"
"Ohh, yeah I like arthur"
"I kinda think it's impossible to not like arthur he's a bundle of joy and enthusiasm"
"He is," I laughed
"How do you know luke and arthur?"
"Luke and I where neighbors growing up, he's probably my best friend" I smiled "he said you uhh don't so all apps and all"
"Ohh no not really, I keep forgetting my phone does more then just… be a phone. I'm not good at all the twitter, facebook, and that sort of thing"
"Yeah me neither" I smiled just then our food arrived "so uhh… how long have you been single? If you don't mind me asking"
"Ohh uhh,"
"It's okay, I shouldn't have asked" I said playing with my food a little
"No, not it's alright, I understand if your curious" he says "about six, seven months now. So… not to long,"
"Six months isn't that long" I said more to myself
"Yeah I know, it was uhh a quick seperation you could say" he says "do you uhh mind if I ask?"
"A year" I answered trying to smile
"I'm sorry I shouldn't have asked"
"It's okay, he ran off. Cheated on me got another girl pregnant" I said
"Y/n. I'm so sorry" he says taking my hand
"It's okay, I'm good" I answered smiling at him
"I feel like I have to tell you now since you told me" he laughs
"You uhh don't have to"
"No it's okay, moved to the other end of the world, missed her family and all, and then just broke it off said she found someone down there so" he says "very much done and over"
"I'm sorry"
"It's alright, if she hadn't then I wouldn't be on this nice date with you"
"Smooth" I laughed having some wine
"I try" he smiled "sorry I haven't even asked you what you do or anything"
I explained my job to him as simply as I could and he did likewise explaining it in that wash where you never completely say what your job title is but give and overview of what you do, the conversation moved to family and such, and we ended up just chatting about everything and nothing for a good while until we had finished eating, our plates taken away just nursing our drinks
"I uhh I have to be honest y/n." He spoke up
Yay, here it comes the this was really fun but I'm not feeling any connection or anything
"I uhh I really like you,"
I stopped short almost choking on my drink
"Sorry I know it sounds a little strange when we have literally been on one date but, I really like you. And I would really like a second date if… you wanted to go out with me again?"
"Yeah I'd liked that" I blushed "I'd love to go out with you again Thomas"
"Great uhh when are you next free?" He asks
"Well I have nothing going on tomorrow night"
"Yeah me either," he says moving his hand to ghost mine a little "anywhere you wanted to go?"
"I've been dying to see that new movie everyone's been talking about" I said moving my hand closer too "but since it a horror, you'll have to promise to hold my hand if I get too scared"
"I'll happily hold your hand, weather your scared or not" he smiled taking my hand intertwining our fingers "shall we get the bill?"
"Yeah its a long walk home" I said
"I'll drop you off home don't worry about it" he says as he got the waiter to bring the bill
"You sure? I don't want to be any trouble"
"I'm sure it's no trouble at all. And I'll pick you up tomorrow for the movie" he says "ooh I should probably give you my number so we don't have to talk though Luke'
"Ahh yeah good point" I said as I got my phone and we traded numbers just then the bill came so I reached for my purse
"No, no I'll get it" he says getting his wallet from his pocket
"No I can't let you pay it's not fair"
"I'm more then happy to y/n, its a date put your purse away it's on me" he says putting his card on the table
"We split it. I insist" I said putting mine with his
"Alright, but I'm paying for the tickets tomorrow"
"And I'll pay for the popcorn"
"Alright love" he smiled
