Look at me, not being on time for my April Immersion Overview as is the usual. (・w・;

First, little blog updates to get out of the way:

I reached 100 followers! Got an influx of people checking out my 1 year update post, and got plenty of nice compliments on my data collection.

For those of you wondering just why I keep up with so much data, it's mostly because it can get really hard to notice how much you're improving in a language especially with something like immersion learning that for people who don't get it feels like a waste of time or a time sink.

Graphs showing consistency, improvement in reading speed, increasing vocabulary counts, and generally just seeing numbers grow turns language learning more fun and motivating for me, and if as a bonus, it encourages someone to try immersion learning then that would be cool!

With that said, whether you're here as a fellow language learner, graphs enthusiast (笑), or just want some Japanese media recommendations, ようこそ!

Also, made a tiny DP change - it’s チト from 少女週末旅行. Pretty sure it’s the first manga series I ever finished in Japanese (not the first one I started since ちはやふる is still ongoing), and I always felt a bit of a ☆connection☆ with her - between her book-loving personality and being a no-nonsense kind of person, there was no way for me not to enjoy her character. Great beginner anime/manga if you’re not into most beginner recommendations.

April has been a pretty good immersion month, as I was able to dip my toes in a variety of media. A bit competitive, too! The club I joined has been pulling all the stops to get to the Top 20 Immersion Leaderboard in it’s first month. I was able to snag the 9th spot among a bunch of people of different comprehension levels (the majority being N1+ since they’re able to comprehend much more and in turn stand longer immersion hours). Lots of tiny complaints though of potential “whitenoising” content (”listening” and “reading” but not comprehending very well just to get a large number to post), but really what can you do? People lie all the time on the internet. Besides, it’s internet points that doesn’t do anything beyond being a little shiny I guess.

Enough about that, let’s get into the nitty-gritty details you came here for!

ANIME

フルーツバスケット

Might need to rewatch this one. Felt like I didn’t connect with the characters the way the rest of its fandom has. I’m kinda sad about it, since I normally love Slice of Life and Fantasy, and I know this is one of my friend’s diehard shows.

ラブライブ! School Idol Project S2

A filler anime to watch tbh. Nice and easy enough to follow for beginners. Pretty good songs. With regards to it being a show about music and moe, I still 100% prefer K-On! if I’m going to be honest, but for a show about non-toxic idols, it’s good!

魔法少女まどか☆マギカ

First read this as English translated manga when I was 13 or something. Mistakes were made. Let’s all just agree to throw キュウベえ into a pit of fire and never talk about it again. Great ending and a show that really reworked the magical girl genre. But seriously, I was traumatized by マミ’s death then and now, help.

四月は君の嘘

Already knew what was going to happen even before watching this so I didn’t ugly cry like I was expecting. Still got that awful sinking feeling though. 10/10 would recommend for a good cry. Also, I’m planning to read the manga, might enjoy that more, because I’ve always liked it more than anime actually. *shocked pikachu face*

ホリミヤ

Watched before I even finished the manga which felt like a mistake at first until I realized that it perfectly stops where I stopped reading. Nice and comfy anime, the kind I would have loved as a teen. Fun animation too, making parts very dramatic even though it wasn’t really that deep of an issue even in the manga. Just teens feeling feelings. Still salty that we lose bad boy styled 宮村, but I get why it had to happen.

AUDIOBOOKS

氷菓

Second re-listen. I understand it fine, but it’s very easy to drift off when you can’t catch all the words so I had to replay often. Will have to mine more from the anime/book.

君の名は

I mined from the anime, and was really pleased to be able to follow all 6 hours of this audiobook perfectly fine. Will need to read the book, because I realized just how seamless reading it would be after listening to it with hardly any issue.

君の膵臓を食べたい

Still trudging on with this one. It’s not a bad story, it’s pretty well written actually, I just made the mistake of watching both the anime and live adaptation first, so I know exactly what’s going to happen and it’s killing my motivation to keep reading. I guess reading the book first before watching the movie still applies in any language with me. Really need to 頑張れ and finish so I can move on.

三日間の幸福

Started reading towards the end of the month, mostly because I realized that every chapter is only 5000-15000 characters long, and I was able to read up to 40k in a day with Island most days. Only two chapters read so far though because I got distracted by manga, but it’s shaping up to be a really good plot and potentially a really sad one, too, so I’m interested.

DRAMA

花ざかりの君たちへイケメンパラダイス

Heard this was a classic so I gave it a try. Loved 生田斗真’s character in this one the most especially all his internal dialogue acted out. Also, 小栗旬 in anything is bound to be a good watch. Simple and fun watch. They dragged the ending so much though lmao

ごくせん

Look, I see 松本潤, I click. Definitely the kind of show you should watch for some great life advice. Planning to watch the 2nd and 3rd seasons even if there is a terrible lack of 松本潤, because I love my strong female protagonists, and man, ヤンクミ is such a great character. Need to read the manga, too, if I can find it.

極主夫道

Oof, this was kind of hard. The yakuza talk was throwing me off, but the rest of it was enjoyable. Not really plot heavy as I thought it was going to be. The comedy side of it was fun and predictable after the first few episodes. Overall, pretty good slice of life, family story with a twist.

MANGA

Read a bunch of manga this month, mostly because I am struggling to find the next vn to read.

おやすみプンプン

Read a couple of volumes (6-7). This manga is so good, but it’s so depressing I need to stop to take a breather every once in a while. Please don’t leave any spoilers. The club has been reacting to me reading this, and it has mostly been a lot of crying emotes. It’s both been enjoyable to see and really worrying. 笑

チェンソーマン

Club recommendation. Only read the 1st volume so far. I really need to get into more 少年 anime/manga. That’s currently my 苦手 genre which is awful because literally all the top anime/manga is 少年 help. I just can’t enjoy it much still even though it’s comprehensible to me.

ちはやふる中学生編

Read Vol. 1, chill read to me at this point after reading 45 volumes of the regular manga. Look, it’s my favorite 幼馴染 manga in baby format, of course I’m going to read this! 太一 has been a flake way before season 3 confirmed. Don’t come at me たいちはや stans bc I also like his character.

約束のネバーランド

Volume 7. I’m taking my sweet time with this one, because I heard the anime for season 2 sucked, so I’m avoiding it like the plague. This is 少年 how am I enjoying this and not everything else what.

ヲタクに恋は難しい

Enjoyed the anime hated the movie why did they make it a musical that sucked (ps i normally love musicals hated this one)

The オタク jargon is kinda hard to read suprisingly but I do enjoy this ship very much. It’s a lighthearted take to otaku culture which is great because seriously it’s scary out there.

ツバサ -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-

It’s my childhood ship, obviously I will read this again (read in English several years ago). Still as plot twisty as I remember it being (now at a bonus hard level reading it in Japanese 笑). Really enjoyed reading this one (I finished it this May).

I’m starting to really dislike furigana in manga. It was a great help as a beginner, but now it’s like training wheels that you can’t take off. I feel like the gains I’m getting from manga is much lower than it was when I first started which makes me both proud of how far I’ve come, but also sad because I love manga. Sad that I might have to start choose VNs over it, because it’s not going to challenge me as much going forward. I mean it didn’t stop me from reading a lot of it this month, but you get the picture.

ファタモルガーナの館

Picked up this VN and finished two doors (15 hours) before stopping. On the fence about it, because it has been kind of predictable so far, and I don’t particularly enjoy the horror genre. That said, this is more psychological than anything, so it’s probably not that that’s putting me off. The language is not exactly difficult, too - maybe some oddly specific words because it is after all historical fiction (which is one of my favorite genres, btw), and 敬語 is definitely interesting to read for once after encountering so many お嬢様 characters in anime/drama so far.

I think maybe it’s the conversations that are kind of dull - dots (silence) every few clicks that keeps breaking the flow of reading. Probably judging it really harshly too early, because it’s rated so high everywhere, and I just have high expectations. Definitely not dropping it yet though, just taking a break and testing a couple of other VNs before I settle with whatever I end up choosing. It is, after all, going to be another 50+ hour read, and I just don’t want to not enjoy the process, because having fun with the process is a huge part of immersion learning.

Dear Diary,

Hi. It’s been a long time since I’ve done this so bear with me. It’s not every day I decide that writing memories and feelings down in a notebook that anyone can read would be worth it.

But anyway. I’m still here, aren’t I?

Wow. I’m still talking like Teen Me. Somethings never change, do they?

Nah. But going back to the ‘recording my feelings and emotions and days in a notebook’ part of the evening…

Huh. Maybe I should write an intro. You know. Since the person reading this (and is precariously close to their impending death) should get to know me first and then get to be my therapist. In that order.

Hi. My name’s [M/N], but I go by Kitai now, the name I chose for myself back when I was fourteen. I’m a graphic designer working at a corporate and so far, life’s going pretty great. I have a beautiful girlfriend, have a spacious office of my own, moved out to live by myself, and work into the early hours of the morning (which Lili hates; she always says I wear myself out too much and if I didn’t watch it, I might be gravely ill, but she’s one to talk, that perfectionist hard worker *affectionately*). I also have many projects lined up, like working on the graphics of my upcoming web series that everyone’s telling me they’re looking forward to, new commissions for some digital art, and lots to write. Not to mention the shitty client I met today just… rejected my work. Literally threw my tablet at me.

What the heck?

The haughty look on her face as she told me my design was nowhere close to what she wanted at all and was in itself very bad, had me seeing red. I literally had to ball my fists and sit on them to try to quash the feeling of murdering her with bare hands right there. Ugh. To think I spent 6 whole hours getting it perfect, just for her to throw it in my face. Pun intended.

Not my fault she gave me such vague details about what she wanted. Told her exactly that and she looked like she was going to throttle me.

Then proceeded to tell me about how I was just slacking off and not putting any real work into it, and that it showed in my work.

Really?

By the end of that speech, I was practically vibrating in my seat. But when I put on a blank and bored expression, I think it pissed her off even more, thinking that maybe I didn’t care. But as she started again, I interrupted her, putting into polite words a piece of my mind and turned on my charming mode so that by the end of it, my tone said, “Hey. It’s alright. Please understand this and we can move on,” which I usually used while sweet-talking my boss. It worked! She looked a little less angry-frazzled and a little calmer and ready to explain what she wanted. Then it went smoothly for the most part. Phew!

I guess Lili was right. My charm and seeming sense of compassion did work wonders on people. Hah. I then asked her jokingly if that was what won her over. She swatted me away, smiling.

My girlfriend’s just amazing, isn’t she?

But that was already pretty obvious. Moving on (otherwise, we’d be stuck in a never-ending episode of ‘How Amazing Lili Is And How I Like To Boast Of It 24/7’ and I think that would defeat the point. So! Moving on…

I released the trailer for ‘Love Me Never’ at midnight last night!

...Technically it’s today morning but you get it.

You won’t believe how crazy everyone’s going in the comments! *squeals* I didn’t check until 5 minutes ago, and now I’m dying of happiness because everyone’s so excited about it and I love it because it’s my work they’re excited for, but also really nervous because I didn’t want to let them down.

I hope I don’t. I’ve worked too hard on it.

It’s also one of my dreams yet unfulfilled. But the moment Tuesday drops around… Darn. I can’t wait! *squeals again and does a tap dance around the room*

[Lili’s voice: Okay Sunny Bunny! Calm down! The glass is gonna break if you keep screeching like that!]

[*Cue me throwing a slipper at her*]

[Lili: *Dodges it and laughs* But in all seriousness, I really am happy for you love. You’ve worked so hard on it. You deserve all the praise, so stop making that nervous face. It’s going to be alright, you hear me? They’re going to love it.]

[*Cue certain noises that ought to be edited out XD*]

[*Insert Squidward’s voice* “A few moments later.”]

What it’s like for me living where I live

Your car ain’t parked outside your house, and, even if you run as fast as possible, you will be wet by the time you get to it

You turn the car out of a street to drive where ever you’re going and boom, there’s a tractor coming up

But no, it’s not jsut a tractor, it’s a tractor with a thing on behind it

Oh, sorry, no, it’s multiple tractos with things on behind them

There’s two farms at the top of my street, and more farms all around the village.

The sheep know you for some reason.

The Catholic high school in the same catchment area (but in the town nearby) as your school in your village did a better job at celebrating Pride month than your non-religious school

Where’s the diversity? In the city about 45 minutes away by car and an hour away by train, which is infinitely easier than getting there by car.

Is that train ever on time? No, but that applies to the entirety of England.

There’s about 100 different ways to walk from Point A, in the village, to Point B, also in the village.

And they’re somehow all under 20 minutes no matter how slowly you walk

Everyone on my street when telling someone their address: [number] [street name], not [number] [street name] village or [number] [street name] close, [number] [street name]

“You weren’t in, so we left your parcel with your neighbour.” In fact, we were in, and the delivery service instead went to [our number] [street name 2] (the street which leads up to our street before the hill) rather than [our number] [street name] (our street, which is the hill) and they weren’t in, so it is with their neighbour rather than ours.

“You weren’t in, so we left your parcel with your neighbour.” We weren’t in this time, but the parcel was left at [our number] [street name 2] rather than either of our neighbours.

You step outside of your Victorian Era house and look at a house that looks like it was finished building yesterday.

Next to that house is a Victorian Era house.

Evens are on one side and odds on the other, right? So 53 is going to be opposite 54 or 52, right? No, it’s opposite 70, which is also opposite a mini field, which is also the pub, but somehow, 37 is opposite 28.

You can stand outside your house and see a pub in both directions.

“Let’s go hang out at the park!” “Which one?” And there’s no way of identifying which one because they all have the same features.

Half of the people on your street go to the same school as you, and if they don’t, they’re just in the wrong year and are about to go to your school.

You’re just gonna be walking to high school and go past your junior school, infant school, nursery, and toddler play thing because they’re pretty much all attached to each other except for the high school.

You’re old teachers form previous schools will see you and chat about how you’re doing at your new school, and it’ll happen with enough of that that you’ll be late even though you set out early enough that you’d arrive 30 minutes before the school bell goes

There’s so few people that the only other neurodivergent people with similar symptoms to you are 5-20 years older or younger than you.

There’s at least one nd person with a similar disorder/symptoms at the high school that doesn’t hate you for no reason, but they live in a different village, so you’re only seeing them at breaks or lessons you share with them (probably won’t be sat next to them unless the teacher doesn’t care where people sits and lets you sit where you want)

No one without similar symptoms sees your symptoms and can’t help when you need it because they genuinely can’t tell that you need help.

You learn to check over everything multiple times, otherwise your neurotypical friends are going to call out the fact that you missed words, repeated words, replaced a word with the word coming after it, or used the wrong form of the word, or wrote something down so quickly that you messed up the spelling, or changed the way you were writing a list half way through, or changed how you wrote a certain word within the same 5 seconds (ie, half way/half-way), or couldn’t decide on which synonym of the word to use

But you only do that with stuff you’re going to show to them because that takes effort, so whevever your friends suddenly decide they want to read the story your writing in your notebook , you refuse.

Oh, but your nd firend with similar symptoms/disorder? They can read it because they do the exact same fucking thing all the time.

It’s raining in your garden, but your neighbours across the wall are getting sunshine and clear skies

And the next day it’s snowing across the whole village

Does a different month of the year stop that from happening? No.

A good chunk of the people you know have some kind of anil that’s usually on a farm, but they don’t live on a farm, but they still take care of the animal/s very well (myself included, btw - we have chickens)

If you own a dog, you know all of the other dog owners by the type of dog/the dog’s name.

No idea what the human’s name is, though - even with the people that live on the same street as you.

Neurodivergent? Probably not officially diagnosed, so likely no proof, likely self diagnosed. Can most of your teachers tell you’re not neurotypical? Probably.

The other side of the street has different weather to you. Drastically.

If you’re lucky, you might be walking along a pavement and see a farmer about to bottle feed the lambs that need bottle-feeding and the farmer will let you bottle feed some of them despite having never spoken to you before now (pre-covid, obviously)

╰ biography . ◞,

an only child born to a secretary for a mother & an often unemployed father in athens , ohio in late 1996 . life for young donna was nothing out of any film you would enjoy watching . a childhood full of neglect & growing up much too fast for your own good . her father , matthew , had fallen into heavy addiction just a year before donna’s birth & her mother , denise , had learned to bury her sorrows with a bottle of alcohol . well below the poverty index there were many nights she knew she wouldn’t come home to food on the table but instead a slew of addicts getting their high in the middle of the living room , keeping the young girl up at all times of the night with their rowdy antics .

by the time she reached third grade she’d learned that her day at school would go over much more smoothly if she made sure she had her backpack, coat & on the one off chance that there was enough food in the house pack her lunch , because if she waited for one of her parents to do it for her she’d never make it to school on time . her mom often had to rush to work in a hungover state & her father didn’t wake up until after she was already due for school , so donna had relied on the bus to get to & from school each day .

at twelve she’d realized that she was much happier the less time she spent at home & so she did all she could to stay out with her friends . she became one of those kids you passed wondering where their parents were at that time of night as them & their friends wreaked havoc in the streets of athens . picking up smoking weed at the ripe age of thirteen , she quickly learned nothing was a better fix for how much she’d hated her life than a quick blunt . she’d fallen into a dark place at a very young age & from her perspective there was really no way out of the downward spiral she had fallen into . she blamed her parents for messing her up so badly & often when she was home it turned into blows between herself & her parents the end result always landed her at one of her friends houses for the night.

it wasn’t until she was fifteen that she befriended a new girl whose parents took a liking to donna & really took her in . it was something like a safe haven spot for her , somewhere she always knew she could go & they’d want to hear about her day or feed her . they’re the ones who learned of donna’s wanting to join the school theater club & urged her to do so . they attended her first performance & her second, third , fourth , etc .

one of her performances at the school garnered the attention of a screenwriter who felt she was a perfect fit for a character they were in the process of creating . this was when her first hollywood deal came , initially turning it down as she had no means to so much as leave the city of athens forget travel to an entirely different state . the screenwriter offered to take care of her completely & before she knew it she was working on the first installment of the hunger games .

when she got back to athens after spending a few months in los angeles she’d realized just how much potential there was out in the world . at this point she decided to take things within her life a bit more seriously . there was a life outside of athens , ohio & donna was craving for it now . making the conscious decision to focus on her schooling with the hopes that she’d be able to get into a decent university . college had never been so much as thought for donna before she’d left the city but after filming a movie , she realized almost anything was possible even for someone like her .

during this same year , her parents split up & her father got back together with his highschool sweetheart , this prompted her father to admit to donna that she had a brother who was three years older than her , who was actually in college . the two got to know one another fairly well when he’d come back home from school during breaks & the two found themselves loving the idea of having a sibling . mutually upset that they’d spent so much of their time not knowing each other so much as existed . donna lived with her father & step-mother amanda in athens & the change in her father was more than visible . she was more than happy that her father had gotten on the straight & narrow , no matter what had to take place for it to happen & who he needed in his life for it to take place . in this time her mother moved to cincinnati & the separation actually made the relationship between donna & her mother stronger .

in 2014 , she graduated from highschool & had committed to attending ohio state university as a theater major . during her time in columbus , ohio she & her new found friends took a liking to the downtown area where they found a hidden gem bar that often held open mic nights . this is where donna was really able to cultivate her love for stand up , despite dabbling in it a few times back in high school & whenever she was out in los angeles . she took to college well & somehow managed to juggle her education , career & social life fairly well . if you ask her how she did it , she’ll always give all the credit to her brother brody & maybe some residual credit to weed .

in her sophomore year she’d fallen in love for the very first time , with one of the quarterbacks at her university . they dated for two years before he’d decided to transfer to lousiana state university . she understood why he did it , he had a career in football he was chasing & she couldn’t be mad at him about that . despite the long distance & at times very hectic schedules between the two of them she worked on being the most supportive girlfriend she could to him & made it out to any & every game she possibly could of his .

after graduating from ohio state she moved down to lousiana in hopes to be with him more but her career kind of kept going & so she was nearly in louisiana just as often as she had been before moving down there. they made it work for a good amount of time , but the distance just started to become a little too much . donna is someone who craves affection after a childhood of not much affection to be sparred . she caught herself at times during the relationship on the verge of cheating , but she is a staunch believer that if you truly love someone you could never do something of that magnitude to them . it was a mutual break up , that came in the early months of 2019 .

she’s now been living in calabasas since she moved out of louisiana & is learning to get back onto her feet without someone there to uplift her .

on december 23rd of 2019 a sex tape with donna’s name plastered all over it had been released online . it was a sex tape of her & her ex who by this time has cemented himself as the likely first round pick in the nfl draft . the sex tape took off & it seemed as though every time her team managed to get it down , it popped up somewhere else . both donna & her ex knew neither one was to blame for the leaking of the sex tape & so they worked together to figure out who was behind it , today their getting closer & closer to finding the person who did it . despite this , the tape is still able to be viewed on the internet it you dig hard enough . although not many have to do that as it had gone vial upon it’s initial release back in december .

Faves and fails of SPN (season 8)

Best episodes (in chronological order):

8:4 Bitten - First good episode and the brothers are barely in it. Probably a testament to how i feel about them and the show this early in season 8

8:8 Hunteri heroici - Finally a silly episode, it almost makes the list just because of that. Cartoons. ”I’ll interrogate the cat.” Best job in the world. Cass’s finest moments.

8:9 Citizen fang - A better Benny than when we first meet him. But sooooooo many frustrating moments. The level of hypocrisy from like everyone involved is crazy. ”Winchesters, man.” Turns out Ellen had a point about them.

8:11 LARP and the real girl - Another great silly episode and they are sorely needed this season. Charlie and Dean are adorable.

8:13 Everybody Hates Hitler - Home of the men of letters is introduced, thank goodness. Nothing makes me feel quite so at ease as this place. And a great episode. With retro villans to match the setting. Adam Rose does such a great job. And John DeSantis.

8:14 Trial and error - Surprisingly good episode owed to the side characters (Danay Garcia is h.o.t).

8:17 Goodbye stranger - There’s something about this episode. Oh, it’s probably the horrifying intro as well as the betrayal set to the sound of Supertramp, or, y’know it could be MEG and my huge crush on her. Sam confiding in Meg (bit of a pattern). MEGSTIEL. Omg. What I would give to have that convo be out of Naomi’s influence. I can’t handle Cass this season, I know it’s not his fault but... Dean begging. Gosh. *sigh* Fine. Destiel. But Meeeeeeeg! No! :(

8:18 Freaks and geeks - Goooooood episode. The clash of ideas surrounding hunting, the ambivalence the brothers feel about being forced into the life so early vs the inevidability of it for the kids, the option of letting go. The horror of what these guys are doing. Also the idea of a hunter dream team is kind of cool.

8:19 Taxi Driver - Bobby! Nuff said. Also Benny goes out with a bang.

8:20 Pac-Man Fever - Charlie! Dream-setting! What is happening? I don’t care, it’s awesome! And Manny Jacinto! Already typecasted as an idiot. ”Don’t quote me to me!” And ”I hate that thing... I want one.” And them saying goodbye. ”I love you.” ”I know.” Hugs all around. Cuddles is off the charts! Love it. I feel like one of the reason this show works for as long as it does is because of the brothers. A bit obvious, I know, but it’s why I forgive it for tons of shit, and it’s why nothing works w/o them, when they have issues w each other nothing feels right.

Worst episodes (in chronological order):

8:5 Blood Brother - Look, it’s not that I dislike Benny, but I kinda do, especially based off this episode; he’s seeking revenge based on the assumption that his sire killed his woman. Then he finds her alive (sort of) but prefers her fridged. Fuck you man.

8:7 A little slice of Kevin - First: I don’t care much for Kevin, his importance to the story is unearned. The show is lucky they keep Mrs Tran on as long as they do. Also the torture scenes of Alfie and Kevin make me sick, no love for Crowley this season.

8:10 Torn and frayed - More torture porn. Fucking hate that shit. And the torture of having to watch Amelia and Sam faking that they’re important to each other. Ugh. At least Dean and Cass try to save Alfie. But like generally; my issue w the first half of this season is I got no one to really root for. Everybody is just so unepic.

8:15 Man’s best friends with benefits - I don’t know about this. I’m intrigued by this world, but I sort of feel like this is one of those in show-pilots, and... i don’t know. Plus y’know friction between the brothers, not here for it. Ultimately I don’t care about this.

Honorable mentions:

The use of Soundgarden in Southern comfort, Soundgarden is always a win.

Dean trying to take care of Sam when he’s undergoing the trials. More of that shit plz!

Castiel’s Biggerson’s scheme- brilliance! ”There are just so many Biggerson’s.”

Also Crowley’s elaborate Truman-scenario w Kevin.

I feel like this season is kinda the boys going proactive; they’re instigators. I like it.

Sam’s been done one dirty: it is ooc for him to not go after at least Kevin after season 7’s finale.

And the lack of thought, time and emotion put into his so-called love story is frigging embarrassing. Dean gets a real, believable love story and Sam gets this out of a bottle soapy bullshit? Sad backstory equals character depth right? It’s one of the worst written ”romantic” storylines I’ve ever witnessed, it’s like the writers just took every romance trope they could find regardless of subgenre (Yeah- romcoms, romantic tragedies, contemporary angst, erotica - they’re not all the same, idjits) and threw them in the blender together. What’s better than one meet cute? Two meet cutes! Nothing says romance like an endless string of unconnected obstacles, right? *deep sigh* Listen, I *wish* SPN had more love stories in it, it needs it, and the fact that it doesn’t have ’em is why the show will never rly be a true contender for me; But not like this, i don’t want ~romantic~ as some sort of appendix, but as *real* sub plots or main plots even, like in Buffy. #willdiemadaboutit

+The use of bronzer this season is out of hand.

Summing up:

Structure this season is a bit chaotic.

The season gets good about halfway through. There are several things the matter w the first half. Sam’s ooc behavior and the fact that we’ve had almost no time w Kevin but the stakes forced onto him are so high. The second half makes up for it introducing The Men of Letters HQ, heartbreak, folly, love and friendship that feels real.

There is something that irks me about the ending too though: something about Dean’s gaze, his temporal blindness: when he is angry with Cass (which he has a complete right to be btw) but refuses to deal w his anger, claiming he can only trust Sam, leaving Cass behind to try to win his affections back thus making him vulnerable to Metatron’s meddling. And Sam points this behavior out in the season’s finale ”What happens the next time I let you down?”. There is a judgy quality to Dean which can make or break the other characters and it’s a quality he should try to take more responsibility for. That aside: the finale is very strong, one of my favorite ones actually, for the sheer emotion of it.

Ok so, my thoughts on the VR ending and VR overall as the 6th entry.

Also because most of my thoughts aren't...complimentary im editing the names so they dont appear in the general tag. This also got LONG so readmore.

The Good:

- A//i's character still managed to be the one thing that saves VR as a show for me. Even with all the weird...contradictory plot issues, A//i still manages to be a compelling character who brings up the question of the right to live. I actually do like how he made it so itd be an ultimatum that he loses in either way, even if the ending kinda ruins the weight behind the action (which I will get to in a bit).

The meh:

-the ending was left somewhat open to interpretation which for a show as...empty as this was works out but honestly it was so vague as to A//is fate is that it may as well not exist.

The Bad:

-The main conflict behind the entire show is...simulations. No joke. Every conflict in the show can be traced back to someone doing a simulation and deciding to lose it. Even if they gave the (rather stupid) explanation that AI experience simulations like actual life (which btw the first villain wasnt an AI so this reason doesnt work), the fact that Yu//sa//ku took a bullet for one of A//is robot bodies that he literally has millions of is...just stupid and there solely for the "uwu drama".

-They actually killed A//i off but wait hes actually alive, so like the final duel literally had no purpose aside from...drama??? The episode is called Compromise and yet A//i had to lose just to keep Yu//sa///kus win streak and theres no compromise whatsoever. Yu//sa//ku litetally destroys the CompromA.I.se card so its just, no comrpomise in any way.

-This....wasn't a happy ending??? I have no idea why both the show and the fanbase frame this as a happy ending bc think about it in context: A//i pretty much loses everything, so does Yu//sa//ku who just isolated himself from everyone else for 3 months in order to comb the network for whatever remnants of A//i exist.

- So many of the supporting characters are just...there. Like, there is no side/supporting character who actually has a character arc in this show. Lets go through the list: Ao//i is pretty much the same character as when she started and goes through 2 unnecessary costume changes for a character growth that isnt there because she has literally ONE victory against an opponent that was stated multiple times to be weak and faulty and have her lose and tortured multiple times for no reason whatsoever, G//o had this weird deterioration that may have lead to something but ultimately didn't, Ak//ira is pretty much the same, J//in has ALL HIS TRAUMA ERASED SO THERES THAT, literally the only side characters who have some sembalnce of an arc are Sho//ichi (the best one anyways) from his "betrayal" in S2, and E//ma with her reconciliation with her brother. Outside of that, nothing. Yu//sa//ku, Re//volv//er and Ho//mu//ra are pretty much the only characters with an arc and even then they're not too solid? Which brings me to-

- Yu//sa//ku has been so wildly ooc since the end of S1. Ive seen so many say that his enphasis on bonds and friendship are character growth but actually looking at the sequence of events he suddenly just like. changes completely around his first duel with Ea//rth. Plus, the message of "revenge is good" was always so weird? Like, he got his revenge so all his trauma is ok now and never brought up or explored again aside from within the first 20 episodes. Theres nothing about it after that and its never built upon. The whole point of a revenge arc is to show that its BAD and yet he starts preaching that revenge is wrong AFTER he successfully gets revenge??? And even then its not exactly a revenge as it is more lashing out since it was Ko//ga//mi who was behind it all. Yu//sa/ku was definitely at his strongest characterization in S1 where we see how badly the Lo//st Incid//ent hurt him but S1 had its own share of problems that led into S2 and so many random plot threads that never went anywhere (such as the Anot//her Incid//ents, the Cy//berse deck being irl despite that A//i didnt have a physical body before then, The Bl//ue Mai//den meetup that was repeated by Nao//ki like 10 times in S2 which seemed to be leading up to something but never did, and the fact that theres 4 recap episodes in S1 already spelled some early problems). So much of the supporting cast function to just say "he turned this whole situation around...with ONE card..." i kid you not watch back every Yu//sa//ku duel I GUARANTEE you'll see someone saying hes a great duelist and serve only that purpose. ALSO THE END OF THE SHOW IS JUST MORE DRAMA?? They make him suffer for no reason other than that they can??? What purpose does his suffering at the end serve aside from just "uwu...poor baby..."???

-Re//volv//er is not a good rival. At all. He's so incredibly bland because much like Yu//sa//ku he was at his strongest characterization in S1 where he actually had some solid motivation in continuing his fathers work and being unable to accept that his dad was evil, yet most of that just flies out the window with all the collateral he's willing to inflict with the K//O//H?? All his character amounts too post S1 is "yeah i told you robots are evil and YOU didnt believe me". The most we got of him growing out of this mindset was calling A//i by his name exactly one time and nothing ever again. Also the fact that in the end we see him and his crew working for S//O//L despite the fact that they were gonna turn themselves in for their crimes just. leaves a rotten taste in my mouth. hes not a good rival at all. All he proves to me is that a good design can get anyone to like a character.

- Ho//mu//ra is...there. I literally cant say anything about him because he absolutely has the strongest motivations of the three but then the show jumps through hoops to push him to the back of the other two. He also has a bunch of early victories I do feel are undeserved (ESPECIALLY the A//oi duel that one pissed me off so much). Also the fact that the show just made him Yu//sa//kus friend immediately whereas it took Sho//ichi several months to get Yu//sa//ku to warm up to him just had me :/.

-The speed duels were a cool concept but they just became these huge cheat fests? Seriously Play//Maker uses StAccess literally every speed duel to pull out a new monster from whatever plot holes the writers need to patch up. I am not kidding. You can go back to every single speed duel Yu//sa//ku was in and youll see this. Skills just werent a good mechanic because when a protag pulls a new card its supposed to be representative of some growth/characterization but he stays the same pretty much throughout the entire show up until S2 where he wildly just switches personality. Plus the fact that Que//en could literally use a skill whenever just shows that it was cheating???

- The villains were overall lackluster. Boh//man was the best because Re//volv//er is just flat whereas A//i struck me more as an anti hero. And again: simulations are the enemy. Light//ning ran one and decided to go ham. Kog//ami ran one and decided to go ham. A//i ran one and decided to go ham. The conflicts are all the same and it just makes things happen rather than following a consistent plot thread? I will say that Boh//mans characterization of a hive mind to become perfect does strike my tastes but thats more my personal preference in villains rather than any merit he has.

- This is a bit of a personal pet peeve but I've seen some of the praise to this show about being the "darkest Y//G//O to date so therefore its good" and im just...no? Edge does not make a good show and just because they lightly focused on the tragedy in Yu//sa//kus life (and it IS lightly because its barely touched upon after mid S1) most of the stuff that happens in this show is pretty tame in comparison? The most that happened here was an attempted global hack of everyones minds from S2 and destroying the internet in S1, with a few references to the torture that happened during the Lo//st incid//ent. To compare: the previous series had this huge interdimensional war that, even if they could reverse the carding of people (which makes Den//nis' attempted suicide even more tragic), ended with an entire dimensions full of brainwashed soldier children, a dimension with huge class inequality that was still being heavily worked upon since there were canonically slaves, and a dimension that was savaged by a genocide and total global destruction. Hell, the series before that had a huge war where the arc actually did focus on the tragedys the characters faced and held consequence (even if they pulled a dbz revive everyone at the end). And as far back into the very first series there were even more graphic depictions of war and death? Idk i feel like people are overplaying the edge here just to find a way to complement this show.

Overall:

I'm...genuinely dissappointed. VR really had so many strong starting points but it all just fell apart at execution. Really the only reason I even bothered to watch it as kong as I did was because Im a longtime fan of the series and wanted to give it a chance rather than jump on whatever love/hate train the show has. Its been rated poorly on the JP side and most of the approval is a vocal minority. Just to be clear: this isnt me bashing the show, my opinions are mine and you can agree or disagree to any capacity, and even if a show isnt well written you can still find a reason to enjoy it despite the flaws.

But if Im being perfectly honest? I do not like this show. It's rushed, choppy, has no consistent or clear plot threads, most of the genuinely interesting characters are wasted for the protagonist to look better and he never really does because he ALSO has an interesting idea behind him but it never goes anywhere. It started strong but ended so poorly. Id be angry but im more dissappointed because Ive watched this show from day 1 and wanted to see the good things it has rather than focus on the negatibes but. yeah. This show really had potential and yet it just fell flat.

MINI MANSIONS CONCERT: WHY CONFIDENCE MATTERS IN WHAT YOU LOVE

On Monday, June 24th 2019, I attended a Mini Mansions concert at The Independent in SF CA. I’ve seen Mini Mansions perform live before when they opened for Arctic Monkeys at the Bill Graham Civic Center in SF on October 20th 2018. However, this is my first time seeing them at their own show for their own tour. That night was incredible, not just because of their performance, but because I got to actually meet two members from the band.

If you are not familiar with who Mini Mansions are, I’ll give a bit of background. Mini Mansions is a music trio made up of keyboardist/vocalist Tyler Parkford (touring keyboardist for Arctic Monkeys), bassist Zachary Dawes (the Last Shadow Puppets), and guitarist/vocalist/ (former drummer?) Michael Shuman (bassist for Queens of the Stone Age). Mini Mansions is a side project for the three members since, as you can see, each of them are involved in other projects.

I became familiar with them through Arctic Monkeys, since Alex Turner was featured in their 2015 album, The Great Pretenders (track 6: “Vertigo”, if anyone was interested in what song). Then I saw them perform live when they opened for Arctic Monkeys. This isn’t their first time opening for them either, since they opened for them before in their previous tour. Needless to say, they have a strong relationship with those Sheffield lads. While standing there and feeling curious to what their other music was like apart from “Vertigo”, I came to find that their setlist was pretty good. Their music is unique, which is too simple a word to describe the kind of music they make. It’s like vintage ‘60’s rock n’ roll distorted with psychedelic elements, accompanied with groovy bass lines (compliments of Zach Dawes), poppy piano hits (thanks to Tyler Parkford), and bluesy guitar riffs (from multi-instrumentalist Michael Shuman). I am a huge fan of vintage rock/pop, like the Beatles, Beach Boys, you get the picture. So hearing something that is similar to that kind of music will most likely capture my interest. And I was definitely interested in Mini Mansions.

The concert itself was pretty cheap, about $15 a ticket. After spending about $105 for Muse, $120 for Mike Shinoda, and about $70 for Arctic Monkeys, I was pretty stoked how affordable this show was. I didn’t want to stress myself out by trying to arrive 4 hours early to get a decent spot. My mentality was, whatever spot I get is what I get. My sister, Jenni, and I arrived at the venue about 45 minutes before they opened the doors, and to my surprise, there wasn’t a lot of people waiting in line. There were maybe about 6 or 7 people waiting before us. I’m guessing everyone else had the same mentality as I did going into this concert. I was relieved that my feet wouldn’t be worn out from waiting so long, and I now had the energy to withstand the entire show. When we were finally let into the venue, I walked straight to the front of the stage, not using my peripheral vision to catch anything weird or exciting. While standing in front of the carpeted stage with a tape that ran across the edge reading “NO DRINKS” my sister tapped me on my shoulder and asked, “isn’t that Mikey working the merch booth”? as she pointed towards the corner that was diagonally across from where we were. I was like, “No, I don’t think so”, because why would a band member work their own merch booth, right? At least that’s what my dumbass thought. But then I squinted my eyes towards the direction she was pointing at, and as my eyes were adjusting in that dark room, with only a dim light hovering around the merch booth, I could tell from the gelled back hair that it was indeed Michael Shuman. He was wearing an all-black outfit: black moto jacket, black t-shirt, black skinny jeans, and black shoes. Pretty casual. This is the exact opposite to the outfit he will later change into when he will perform, which was a white satin suit with some watercolor accents on it.

It was like having two personas, one being the regular guy selling band stuff and the other is the performer. I thought it was cool that he was working the merch booth because he wasn’t acting like he was too good to sell his stuff.

Jen asked me if I wanted to buy something, and despite the fact that I needed to save as much money as possible to have enough for my rent and other bills for the summer before school starts I said, “Hell yeah I wanna buy something!” But at the same time, I kept staring at the front of the stage, and I was apprehensive because I got a decent spot for the concert. The woman next to me told me, “You totally should, they’re really nice, I mean I’ll try to extend my arm out as much as possible to save your spot”. God, what a nice woman. I thanked my fellow concert friend and walked up to the line. There was only two people in front of me and they seemed to be a couple waiting next to each other, so I wouldn’t have to wait too long. But the girl took a while figuring out if she wanted a black Mini Mansions shirt or a white one. At this point, Zach Dawes was also at the booth helping his buddy, Mikey, out with making sure he had enough merchandise at the table. She asked Zach for his opinion, “which color do you like best?” And Zach, with his calm voice says, he liked both of them. I don’t even remember which color this chick went with, but they finally left the line, and I was finally next. I was standing face to face with Mikey Shuman, with only a plastic banquet table in between us. My eyes kept darting from his face to the posters to the left of him.

He actually spoke first and said, “Hi. How are you?”

And like a square I responded with, “I’m good, how are you?

“I’m good!” He said back, “What can I get you?”

“Uhh, may I have that poster please?” I pointed to the poster, which was signed by all 3 members.

“You may” with a dip at the end of “may” (what a polite gentleman).

(I put the poster on the stage so I can take a picture of it. No one was playing yet, btw. But that’s how close I was to the stage).

I didn’t want just a poster, (which I didn’t plan on where I was putting while watching the concert) I wanted something with it, so I asked Mikey if I could buy the CD that had Mini Mansions written in yellow on the top left corner, with a stuffed toy bunny on an illuminated plate. It was their first full length album they ever released, and I didn’t have that album yet. Which by the way, is hard to come by. It was sold out on Amazon for a while, and sold-out on their website too. I tried going to Rasputin Music a few months ago at the mall where I live to see if they had it. The cashier said there was something by Mini Mansions there, but I couldn’t find anything. I tried looking at a record shop in Santa Cruz, but no Mini Mansions CDs there either. I think it may have been available again on their website, but I waited on buying it, but I don’t remember exactly why. I think I wanted to avoid shipping fees and wait for it to be prime available on Amazon. Or maybe I was hoping I will find it in a record shop around where I live.

Anyway, I asked Mikey for the CD and he asked, “This CD right here?” He pointed to the CD.

“Yeah”

He then looked in another box, and when he put the box down empty handed he said, “Wow that was the last one”.

“Cool!” I responded with, like the fucking shy idiot I am.

It took me a while to get this album, I’m glad I waited so I can actually buy the album from the band themselves, but I wish I could’ve responded better.

What happens next is so surreal that it took me a couple of days to comprehend that it happened. It’s nothing even that spectacular it’s just something that had never happened to me before. He tapped on the tablet the items I was purchasing and told me my stuff was going to be 35 bucks. I handed him my card and he actually swiped my card into the card reader sticking out from the tablet and asked, “Can you sign right here, please?”

This was mind-blowing to me, because I’m thinking shouldn’t it be the other way around? Shouldn’t I be the one asking you to sign me stuff. But I signed the tablet, in a way like I’ve never been excited to sign my name to a purchase before. I couldn’t believe I was buying band merch from the actual band member himself, it was awesome. After he gave me my stuff, I handed them to my sister and asked him if I could shake his hand. The guy puts the tablet down and sticks out his hand and I’m fucking touching Mikey Shuman’s hand. I thanked him, and if I wasn’t enough of a square, my sister noticed an awkward silence and finally said, “I think you guys are great and I’m really excited for the show!” Both Zach and Mikey said thank you and both shook Jen’s hand. I thanked Mikey again and leaned over to shake Zach’s hand and went back to the front of the stage.

Obviously, I was excited that I met two of the members from the band. I couldn’t believe I actually talked to them. But I still felt unsatisfied, not with them of course, but with myself. I want to be a music journalist and interview bands and study music as a career. Because I have anxiety issues, including a bit of social anxiety, I am always awkward and shy when I meet people, which does not help me in the long run at all. There were so many things I could’ve asked Mikey: What do you like to play more, bass, drums, or guitar? I love how bluesy you get in The Great Pretenders, what was the inspiration for that? I couldn’t even ask him something as basic as, hey how are you liking SF this time around? Anything weird happen to you yet? Ever been to Oakland? My God I suck. I could’ve even said, Wow, this is the last CD? No way? How lucky am I? Such a missed opportunity to connect with the band, and actually work on my people skills when I meet musicians for the job I want. Despite the fact that I wish I could go back in time to alter how I met Mikey and Zach, I was still grateful for the encounter I had. It’s not a common thing for me to meet the people who make the music I like.

Their performance was also great. After watching two openers, Tyler Parkford finally came out, but to set up his keyboard directly above me. He bent down and plugged some wires in. I’m sure it’s creepy having people stare at you while you’re doing something, so I looked away so he can do his job. But at one point I looked back up at his direction and while he was standing behind his keyboard, he looked at me and I smiled at him. I was happy that he smiled back. Unfortunately I never got to talk to Tyler that night, but I’m hoping I will in the future.

After Mikey sound checked all of the equipment, they began to play. They started off with “Freakout!” which is what they started with when they opened for Arctic Monkeys. The song isn’t super intense but has an upbeat tempo that is perfect for getting the crowd going. They mostly played songs from The Great Pretenders, but incorporated a few from their upcoming album, Guy Walks into a Bar… So we were getting that mix of relaxed familiarity from being able to sing along with the songs we already knew, and the excitement from the new songs from the album that has yet to come. A variety of uplifting emotions that was getting the crowd pumped. The song I connected to live the most was “Works Every Time”. “Works Every Time” is from their upcoming album, but they released it on their EP with the same title first. Since the song had been out for some time now, I was already familiar with it, and enjoyed the calm soulful singing of Parkford and swaggering bass lines of Dawes. The kind of sound that someone can listen to while driving late at night. But hearing it live was a different experience for me. The dreamy tone from the piano was more upfront, maybe because I noticed it more? I don’t know, but it was lovely.

Zach was a little shy when I met him, since he didn’t really say much; however, on stage he wasn’t shy rocking out those bass lines with his buddies. The guy has mad rhythm with his bass, and he didn’t look nervous on stage. If he was nervous, then I couldn’t tell because he played each song so naturally. I know if that was me up there, I’d probably mess up a lot from nerves, since I can barely sing right while singing karaoke with two friends.

When it came to the more fast tempo songs, especially “Mirror Mountain” all the guys got really into it, but Mikey was not shy of wailing around and screaming loud into the mic. I enjoy watching him get this intense honestly, [even though a couple of the audience members who I talked to at the Bart station after the show told me, at another Mini Mansions concert they went to in Sacramento, were afraid of Mikey potentially kicking them sometimes while he was rocking out, but luckily he didn’t]. His punk rock energy bounced across the entire stage, and as a direct result I got pumped watching him go. There was a point during “Mirror Mountain” when he bent down real close to the edge of the stage. He puts the mic close to his lips, and his palm held the back of an audience member’s nape. He sang close to this young man’s ear, and the young man smiled, probably from the attention he was receiving from Mikey, but he was also leaning back, possibly because he was trying not to get too close to him. Looking back at it now, I didn’t know what was going through that kid’s head, but he seemed unsure of how to react when the singer/guitarist for Mini Mansions was singing physically close to his face. I wouldn’t know either, to be honest, if that was me.

Needless to say, there’s a level of boldness that is needed to get that close to someone, without having that internal conversation wondering if you’re doing too much or just enough. He just did it. While performing, he used his entire body (from his voice to his legs) to express himself, and while some people would think that’s too much or bold, either way, people are looking.

But that’s the thing when you express yourself in something you care about, may that be writing, food, books, or music, it will show. With Mikey, Zach, and Tyler they used their talents to create this interesting concoction of vintage inspired contemporary indie rock. They went with what they had, released it, and was able to perform it in about every part of the world.

In the end, they are going places with it, this thing that they love, or at least what it seems to me they love. In other words, they just went for it. I wish I could possess at least half the confidence of what they have. Maybe if I did, I would’ve been less awkward when I met Mikey and Zach. Zhen: honestly??? i have no clue. haven’t seen that much gentle women in my life. they’re all pretty fierce and kick-ass. i guess it could be through history, yknow, in imperial china the empress just manages the harem and takes care of household duties and makes sure the house is all pretty and in place and presentable while the emperor does all the bigger political and military stuff. you won’t ever see the emperor touching a needle pin, will you, and all the women are the handmaidens and servants and weavers while the men are guards and military officials. i mean, it’s not like men don’t go near all these supposedly dainty stuff, it’s just that it’s made to be the official job of women. personally i’d love to just handle things at home because it’d be too troublesome managing a country’s affairs, but i don’t think that’s because i’m gentle. it’s because i’m lazy as hell and i’m owning it.

Yu: What Zhen said. surprisingly she hasn’t really spouted that much crap in this interview. she’s actually being decent, for once.

Jia: sometimes women are still regarded the gentler sex because we’re still perpetuating it ourselves! you hear women on the streets saying things like, ‘i want to find a rich husband who can take care of me for the rest of my life’ or that ‘i’ll settle down and stop working when i get married’ or having aspirations like ‘having a baby and making a family is my only dream in life’. not that it’s wrong, but it just perpetuates that idea of a woman not taking any action for herself! women are strong, alright? look at zhen’s example of the imperial palace. the concubines and the empress’ entire purpose of being in the harem is to gain the emperor’s affections in order to give him a baby, and that might seem like it’s all, but do you know how difficult life in the palace can be? do you know how strong these women are, emotionally, mentally, physically, to take the toil and stress of constantly being pitted against one another-- even if they’re just fighting for the emperor’s affections? and those shoes!! Have you seen the shoes they have to walk in? and they have to kneel and bow and walk delicately and gracefully in those??? and that hair! do you know how heavy their hair can get --

Zhen: you know, i kinda think you’d make a great concubine or empress in those days Jia: i probably wouldn’t even get past the first stage, i’m too rowdy

Zhen: yea, but if you were born in those times you’d learn to be a little more disciplined and dignified and you’d have kicked so many of those asses there

Yu: ... i thought we were trying to fight for women, not encourage fighting among women

Zhen: i’m just saying, yknow, none of those scheming people would have a chance against jia because she’s the fiercest, most scheming person there is! i don’t know if she’d be able to handle the responsibility of empress though... all that dignity and grace and needing to upkeep appearances...

Jia: yea. i would not want to lead that empress life. that kind of being poised and proper and dignified to upkeep appearances sorta thing is probably more for Yu

Zhen: but Yu won’t be able to take all the scheming. she’d just lock herself in the room to do her work in silence and she won’t even catch a glimpse of the emperor

Yu: ... you know i’m right here, right?

6. What is a piece of your personality that you are proud of?

Zhen: ehhhh.... i don’t know. i can take pretty good care of people, i think. sometimes, when i feel like it. unless it’s too exhausting, then maybe not.

Yu: i think i’m pretty resilient, but i can do better.

Jia: i’m a go-getter. i’m determined, and i’m strong, and i’m hella capable. if i strive for something, you know eventually i’m going to get it.

7. When did you accept your own body and its strengths/weaknesses?

Zhen: well. you just gotta accept that your own body is what helps you breathe and eat and sleep and basically carry you around, yknow? i’ve never really had much problems with my own body, tbh. it serves me well

Yu: sometimes i still think i’m too weak, that my body can withstand more. but sometimes you need more rest in order to go on.

Jia: if i can’t count on myself and my own physical body to do things, then who else can i count on? once you’ve figured that out, it’s pretty easy to accept your own body for what it is.

I finished “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck”

I read the full 12 chapters, plus the “Companion” section that had bonus stories in between the chapters, and “The Last Sled to Dawson”, “The Dream of a Lifetime”, and “A Letter From Home.”

This has to be my favorite comic series I’ve read so far. Not just because it’s Scrooge, but there’s so much heart and emotion put into it and you’re able to follow the story so easily (which for me is hard as I get easily distracted and forget where I’m at). But this story kept my attention and made me want to keep going to the next chapter, every night I thought “just one more, just one more!” I absolutely loved the story. If you want a more in depth review chapter by chapter, read below. (SPOILERS)

Again, thank you so much for who ever first made me find this (I actually can’t remember but it was probably a mix of everyone) as well as the album that made the story SO MUCH BETTER. Listening to the music while reading the chapter associated, really made you feel like you were in the story with the characters. I highly recommend reading this comic while listening to the music if any of you have not already. If anyone needs links or more info, feel free to ask!

This part will be a chapter by chapter review/my thoughts (some chapters might be merged together if they have similar topics).

“Of Ducks, Dimes, and Destinies”: I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this, but apparently this chapter was the intro, though it’s more like a AU of sorts. I thought it was cute though seeing Magica out of her element. My favorite part of it had to be her not recognizing young 10 yr old Scrooge while confusing Fergus for the rich old duck. But in her defense, they do look a lot alike.

“The Last of The Clan McDuck”: Now the story really begins! I wanted to get more history on Scrooge so that was one of the main reasons I wanted to read this series. It was actually a bit of a surprise to see the pampered, penny-pincher a humbled, poor and very sweet boy. Seeing how he turned into almost a completely different person is a bit sad really, but at least we know in his later years some of that sweet, caring side is still present. I admire Scrooge’s bravery in how willingly he left his family and the only life he knew for uncertainty and possibly danger at only 13 years old. He certainly matured very fast and unfortunately that forced his childhood to end at an early age.

“The Master of the Mississippi”: This was probably one of my least favorite chapters if I’m being honest. It was fun seeing a teenage Scrooge adapting in his new life in America and Uncle Pothole was certainly an interesting character! Plus seeing the Beagle Boys’ origins was interesting as well.

“The Buckaroo of the Badlands,” “The Cowboy Captain of the Cutty Sark”, “The Raider of the Copper Hill,” Also “The Vigilante of Pizen Bluff”: So all of these chapters are in the “Wild West” portion of Scrooge’s life; his teenage years and early twenties. Seeing Scrooge already fighting for his fortune and failing at every turn was almost surprising in that he always seems to succeed in life. I was so convinced he’d strike it rich on the Copper Hill, but fate seemed to have other plans for him. However at this point in his life he’s still staying true to his roots and vowing to earn his fortune honestly. (But to be fair he does get $10,000. And back then that’s got to have been like a million dollars now a days.) I’d also wondered how he’d get along with animals, and it turns out he’s a real Disney princess. He gives love and respect to animals and they love him in return.

“The New Laird of Castle McDuck”: NERVE RACKING. Not only do the McDuck’s risk losing the ancestral home to their arch nemesis, but Scrooge DIES. (or just gets knocked out?) Anyway he goes to McDuck heaven where he almost stays before finally getting another chance (for becoming the stingiest person to ever live). He ends up using all the money he got from the Copper Hill to pay for the McDuck Castle. Plus we also see Scrooge use his specs for the very first time, though it’s only for reading.

“The Terror of the Transvaal”: Ah Flintheart, you were a scumbag before Scrooge came into the picture. Scrooge is a lion whisperer apparently, and he makes fun of Flintheart in front of the entire town before throwing him in jail, making a lifelong enemy.

“The Dreamtime Duck of the Never Never”: I was excited for this one. Love that Australian Outback theme! Scrooge rides on a camel head, which is perfect. I still love seeing how much animals love and trust Scrooge. He’s started to become less trusting of people due to being tricked at every turn, and therefore is a bit skeptical of the shaman in the desert. However seeing the dream, or prophesy of sorts, come true (which was super cool btw), it starts his admiration of history and architecture. Scrooge almost took that giant Opal that could easily have made him rich, but that would have been dishonest, and Scrooge decides against it (a bit begrudgingly). I’m so happy he got his dime back, it was worrying seeing him lose hope that his fortune would never come. He’s worked so hard and to give up now would be devastating. Thankfully he was inspired and his story finally started to look up.

“The King of the Klondike”, “The Prisoner of White Agony Creek”, “Hearts of the Yukon”, “The Last Sled to Dawson”: ...no words. I knew these would be my favorite sections. Yukon Scrooge, upper 20′s - early 30′s - in his prime, Scrooge. The beginning of his fortune. The beginning of Goldie. GOLDIE. Where do I even start?! Whew, this is going to be long. First of all, the whole ordeal Scrooge had to go through just to get to White Agony Creek was ridiculous. Finally he finds where the gold should be, but it’s not quite that easy. Everyone in Dawson mocks him endlessly for not spending any money on fun, which is completely unfair. The absolute worst part is when that mean old pig kidnaps him and chains him to the smokestacks of the boat. (Seriously this boy gets knocked out so much I’m surprised he doesn’t have a brain injury) The men mock him and then read the two only letters he’s ever gotten from his family out loud, one of which is from his mother who says they’re falling behind on payments for the castle, and the next...his father informing him that his mother has passed away. The men even mock him in his mother’s death. And Scrooge...freaking pulls a Sampson and pulls the smokestacks until they collapse onto the boat, throws a grand piano through a stained glass window, beats up any and all the men who dare fight him, and then drags the pig’s listless body through the main road in town for all to see until he can throw him to the mercy of the ‘law’ in the area. Then comes Goldie, he kidnaps her, and brings her back to his home for stealing his goose egg nugget (the biggest gold nugget ever) to show her how hard a miner has to work. They stay together alone in the wilderness for a whole month. My gosh was this chapter full of sexual tension. I’m such a die-hard Scroldie shipper now I can’t even deny it. Eventually the two part their ways, but end up meeting again in the near future when Goldie saves Scrooge from losing his claim (in a roundabout way). Then we get to see Scrooge’s last trip to Dawson before leaving the Yukon and moving on with his fortune. He loses his sled and has to return 50 years later to get it with Donald and the boys. The only thing of importance in the sled was old memories, but it was worth the fight for old Scroogey. This section was definitely the best, but molds Scrooge’s rough and tough attitude.

“The Billionaire of Dismal Downs”: After more than 20 years, Scrooge is finally coming home to Dismal Downs successful, he’s a billionaire. The whole town has come to greet him and as soon as he shows up, they give him a big round of...tomatoes and insults hurling at him. After all he’s done this is how he’s treated??! His wild temper quickly flares and Fergus is surprised at how his son has changed, as well as the town who thought he was such a nice boy. The town people believe he no longer belongs in Scotland. After a quick visit to his mother’s grave insert sobbing here Scrooge decides to participate in the games to show how much he belongs, he even wears a kilt! Now Scrooge should have dominated this, however he’s completely forgotten the rules, and therefore disqualifies himself almost every time. A young boy named Scottie tries to show him the ropes, however fails miserably. Eventually they return to the castle where his sisters make fun of Scrooge’s lock of golden hair hurr hurr and they all decide to move to Duckburg, America, that is, except Fergus who says he’s too old to move again. The chapter ends with ghost Fergus (who’s passed away in the night) and ghost Downy waving goodbye to their children before joining McDuck heaven. I literally cried in this chapter.

“The Invader of Fort Duckburg”, and “The Sharpie of the Culebra Cut”: Some more important chapters, but not extremely interesting in my opinion. We see the founding of Duckburg and the Junior Woodchucks, as well as the Panama Canal and more of Scrooge suffering from his sisters, who make him wear his specs full time after he repeatedly makes mistakes due to his failing eyesight.

“The Empire-Builder from Calisota”: Sigh. We see the deep fall of Scrooge’s morals. He visits his sisters, whom he hasn’t seen in quite a while, and takes them to Africa where he’s working on his current dealings with the natives. Instead of making fair trades like in the past, he uses cunning tricks to minimize his costs in buying the diamond mines he seeks. His sisters criticize him, but he brushes them off. He moves on to a voo-doo native tribe (his first mistake) who doesn’t want to sell. After being humiliated in front of his kin, he goes into town and recruits several people to help him burn down the village and destroy everything in sight while his sisters return to camp, ashamed of their brother. Scrooge then puts on a disguise and ‘rescues’ the clan leader who previously embarrassed him, and tricks him into signing over his land. This is far from the kind, humble, honest boy we knew in the beginning. He returns back to camp, triumphant, to gloat to his sisters only to find they’ve left him. There’s a lone note remaining saying he’s not the man they used to know and to come back once he changes his ways. Scrooge is initially enraged, feeling betrayed. However as he argues with himself, his father’s voice comes into his head, reminding him how he wanted to make his fortune honestly, and has now just committed his first (and only) dishonest trade. Scrooge realizes what he’s done, and as he tries to run after his sisters, the witch doctor returns and casts a curse on him to have a zombie attack him. However Scrooge is still in disguise, and quickly makes himself look normal, which tricks the zombie. However for the next several years the zombie would haunt him and occasionally show up. In Scrooge’s quest to apologize to his sisters, he makes many sidetracks in making his fortune. The zombie even causes the crash of the Titanic that Scrooge was riding on. (seriously everything is his fault) Finally, after 27 years, he returns to Duckburg to stay. His family has heard he was coming and decided to put aside their differences and be a family once again, even bringing the young Donald and Della. However Scrooge has completely changed, for the worse, and completely ignores his family, eventually chasing them out of his life, for good, but not before the young and feisty Donald can give him a kick in the rear.

“The Richest Duck in the World”: Feels. All feels. We finally see Scrooge as the miserable old man we know him as. Alone and bitter and cut off from everyone. But he becomes too lonely one Christmas and invites Donald and the boys up to the mansion, if only to show them the wealth and future inheritance when he’s gone. It’s as if Scrooge is expecting to die fairly soon, and he’s completely given up on everything. The bin is shut down, he’s not making any money or traveling anymore, he doesn’t leave his house, and he hasn’t even swam in his money in years. He really has just given up. But the boys manage to inspire him, in a way that they literally make him so angry he just can’t take it anymore and eventually returns the swift kick to Donald. Afterwards we see rejuvenated Scrooge - though still elderly, he feels full of life once again. Start DuckTales story...

“The Dream of a Lifetime”: I just had to read this because of the jumps in Scrooge’s dreams through his lifetime. It was adorable seeing young Scrooge, especially 10yr old Scrooge cussing out his nephew Donald for interrupting his dreams. Then on top of all that it ends with Scrooge finally reaching Goldie on the burning stage (which never happened), and the blushinggg hnnghhh and then freaking Donald sitting there watching the whole thing, just yes.

“A Letter From Home”: I had to read this one simply because I had read that Scrooge and Matilda make up. Boy howdy was this an emotional roller coaster, starting with Scrooge visiting his parents’ grave. Tears. Literal tears. Then Matilda wants nothing to do with him, that surprised me a bit considering how sweet and soft-spoken she was when she was younger. Plus she breaks the news about how Fergus never wanted Scrooge to find the treasure and calls him a bad son. My gosh my heart is aching for Scrooge at this point. The antagonist suddenly pulls a gun on Matilda, and Scrooge jumps in front of her without hesitation. Thank goodness the gun ‘misfires’. That definitely changed things between the two. Finally we get to see the interaction we’ve been waiting for. Scrooge and Matilda finally yell talk things out, and somewhat uncharacteristically, Scrooge cries and pleads for forgiveness. However, Matilda finally gets to hear Scrooge’s side and realizes just what he’s been through as well. They find a letter to Scrooge from Fergus, who actually did want Scrooge to find the treasure, and told him he and his mother were proud of him. It was one of the only letters Scrooge ever received from his parents, and he never, since the day they died, knew they were proud of him. sobs

That was a lot longer than necessary but even if you guys only read the sections you want that works. Thank you again!

So uhhhh I was just asking. Isn’t Cass too old for Varian(?)

(This is the question that I said I accidentally deleted my fully-typed answer to, so that’s why I’m so late answering. Thank you for your patience

Okay, I get asked this question a lot- and believe me, I understand why - so I’m gonna try and explain my thoughts on the subject to the best of my ability and hopefully that might clear up some misconceptions.

Deep breath, here we go…

Firstly let me say this: I don’t ship them at their current ages and have never claimed to. I’m not okay with adult x minor ships, so please don’t make that assumption of me (this isn’t directed specifically at you, btw, I’m just putting it out there so people know.)

In fact, I really feel like the general concept of “shipping” is part of the problem here. Shipping tends to mean “x character and x character look cute together”, it tends to be a very shallow version of romance and doesn’t leave much room for more realistic relationship growth.

Here’s the thing.

Is Cass too old to be romantically involved with Varian at this point in the show? Yes. Or more specifically, he’s too young. There’s no doubt about that.

Does that rule out the possibility of their relationship developing later down the road? No. And I’ll tell you why.

Relationships mature with time the same way that people do.Someone who you once saw as a friend or even more like a sibling CAN become the object of your affections over time.

This is ESPECIALLY true after a long period of absence.

Varian and Cass are, at most, ten years apart (though it’s more likely closer to 7-9). So, say that they’re still friends when Varian is in his early twenties, they’d then be within the same age group (20-30.) Would it be weird for Cass to start to like him then? There’s nothing strange about two 20-something year olds being in a relationship, right?

So the age gap isn’t so big that it would make a relationship impossible.

“But she already knows him as a kid, isn’t that weird?”

I mean, not really? It’s not like she’s his babysitter or caretaker, there’s no creepy mom-complex involved here. They’re friends, and Cass has never really shown any sign of familial affection for him. There are plenty of examples in literature and television that feature an older character with a younger friend who later grow up to become each other’s love interest;Laurie and Amy (Little Women), Gaston and Gigi (Gigi), Ferb and Vanessa (Phineas and Ferb), just to name a few.

Plus, I’d argue they aren’t all that close yet??? Yeah, they had one bonding episode, but one day of getting to know someone doesn’t exactly cement your relationship with them. Especially considering Varian spent most of it trying to impress Cass and she spent most of it trying to prove herself to her dad.

(Not to mention the fact that they’re at odds with each other right now and presumably have miles between them. So I wouldn’t say their relationship is developing too much at the moment.)

I’d venture to say they have a lot more to learn about - and from - each other and that Great Expotations was only a glimpse of how well they suit each other as characters (romantic or otherwise.)

I still believe Cass will be vital to Varian’s redemption, maybe the Cassandrium will even have a part to play in it.

“Okay, but isn’t aging him up so that he’s old enough for romance kind of not-okay?”

If it was JUST him that was being aged up, then yeah. That’s a little weird. You shouldn’t have to adjust the age of a character to ship them.

But exploring potential for a FUTURE romance when they’re BOTH older is not the same thing. That’s just jumping ahead on the timeline, it’s not manipulating a situation to make it “less illegal”.

It’s like if I were to say “what if Varian went on to marry Red or Angry when they’re all older?”

That doesn’t seem weird, does it? It seems plausible.

Red and Angry are approx. 7-8 years old rn, which would make them about the same number of years apart from Varian as Cass. But since Varian is currently under 16, it’s easier to picture him with someone younger than himself. Even if the age gap is the same and it’s taking place in the distant future when they’re all much older anyway.

That’s why any romantic plots I have for the ship always take place years down the road. I never lessen the age gap between them, I just fast-forward to when it seems much smaller. Which, for the record, is not actually a big jump. The kid will be a young adult (17-18) by the time the series ends.

And for the record, I’ve never so much as insinuated that Cass CURRENTLY has feelings for Varian. I’ve never implied that she’s attracted to a minor. But I do LIKE the idea that she could eventually start to see him in a different light when they’re both older and more mature. And I can find nothing wrong with that concept.

I’m not even necessarily implying that I believe they’ll become canon in the show or anything like that. I just like to consider the “what if”s.

So, to conclude: Yes, Cass is too old to be romantically involved with Varian at their current ages, and I don’t support the idea of that happening. I do, however, see potential for their relationship to grow deeper over time and eventually become romantic.

And I still see nothing inherently wrong with that.

Namjoon Soulmate AU : Wings and Thorns

Concept: Your tattoo is supposed to somehow lead you to your soulmate- but you have no idea why your soulmate is obsessed with birds and he has no idea how the plethora of blooms on his chest is supposed to help him find you at all.

Sometimes soulmate marks just make it more difficult and sometimes; this makes you want to give up looking for them all together.

Authors Note: I know I said I was going to wait to release this but tldr I couldn't fucking sit on this because it's just so sweet 💕 💕 💕

(so soft) (those collar bones) (damn)

- Both you and Namjoon have the soul mate system of tattoo’s.

- You get your tattoo before he gets his.

- At first, yours is just a bunch of curving lines, until one day you wake up to bird wings dashing against your arm- still grey and not colored like they would be if your soul mate loved you.

- And your heart drops because damn, you’ve been waiting for this for so long.

- Both of you got your Soulmark really late- like early 20′s when most people get them before they reach puberty.

- Sometimes the bird wings change- sometimes they have stripes and sometimes they don’t, sometimes they’re tucked against bodies and you can almost make out beaks whereas other times they’re blurry with movement.

- Your friend finds her soul mate after she realizes her abstract tattoo is a map of the Seoul subway system- and that’s when you start to get discouraged.

- Because most people who have your soul mate system have a map or something but you have no idea what these wings are supposed to mean and how you’re supposed to find your soulmate.

- And besides- your mark isn’t colored; your soulmate doesn’t love you- at least not yet. Why would you spend time looking for someone who doesn't want you?

- It takes a few more months for Namjoon to get his soulmate mark.

- He wakes up in the morning listening to the shrill shriek of the crows outside his window to a sharp pain on this chest.

- When he looks in the mirror there are red roses- really no more than a tangle of thorns, deep green leaves, and almost buds vining across him and winding down to his stomach.

- And all he thinks is damn- this is going to be hard to hide, but he’s also happy.

- Because the vines are a deep green- not black and white like they could be which means his soul mate already loves him. Someone out there loves him.

- After that, he has to stop wearing deep v’s, popping his collar, and wearing white shirts because the marks are so dark that they show through anything.

- And he doesn’t exactly want his soulmate mark on display to everyone- especially because of his adoring fans.

- Your tattoo’s both change pretty regularly.

- Your wings get larger- like that of an albatross, stretching across your back and shoulders (this happens when Namjoon’s flying to other countries).

- Sometimes you get full birds with bright eyes (when he’s on a role creating music). Other times it’s just a tangle of wings and what looks suspiciously like song lyrics (when his schedules too busy for him to feel much of anything at all).

- And of course, his flowers change.

- The buds open on the day’s when you feel the most yourself.

- Sometimes he looks up the meaning of the flowers that appear on his chest.

- Red amaryllis bloom on him when you are at your most confident.

- Crocuses bloom when you’re feeling happy.

- Months go by- and then a year, then another; until he realizes its been 5 and he still has no idea how he’s supposed to find you.

- He goes to conservatories and flower shops between his busy schedules- but he doesn’t find anyone with a mark that could relate to him in any way- it starts to feel like you’re more of a dream than a person.

- But then the little purple blossoms of anemone start showing up- and when he looks up the meaning of them he chokes on his coffee- because anemone means the feeling of being forsaken and fading hope.

- And spring is starting- if you loved flowers as much as he did now- he would think that you’d be happy that everything is about to be in bloom. But here are cyclamens blooming across his abdomen- which makes his breath catch because they mean resignation and goodbye.

- His strife is further heightened by the larkspur, which grows across his forearms- and he knows that you are giving up on him.

- It’s been years at this point- so he can’t really blame you. he listens to the owls at night and sends words to you through the faint bond, his hand resting on his chest- on his tattoo, the only piece of you he has.

- Please is all he said, please don’t forget about me just yet.

- You wake up with golden owl eyes peering out at you from behind the veil of a wing on your wrist.

- You live On the other side of the city- you’ve been apart of bird watching groups since you first realized your soul mark was wings and despite the fact that the birds are lovely the endeavor has brought you no closer to finding your soul mate.

- At first, you tried to follow seasonal migrations thinking that the crow-tit feathers on your shoulder had to do with the winter months.

- But then it changes to ravens and grackles and back again, the only thing that gives you pause is the fact that now your tattoo is collored now- but with most of the birds being black or white it hardly makes a difference.

- The most common bird you get from Namjoon is a pigeon, which can be anything from bright and iridescent grey to pure white.

- On those days your tattoo looks more like scars and having a soul mate mark like this feels more like a wound.

- And it’s been so long- and you still don’t feel any closer to finding him.

- So gradually- you stop following bird migrations, you stop commenting on bird watching forums, you wear long sleeve shirts and pretend your soulmate mark isn’t there.

- Namjoon wakes one day too vines of forsythia’s crossing across his chest. Yellow blooms contrasting nicely with his silver hair. And he remembers that both Hoseok and Tae are going to go see the forsythia festival today and he feels his heart jump uncomfortably and knows that he has to go.

- He can only hope that you’re going to be there- but in his heart, he knows you will be- you have to be. The flowers have been getting dimmer day by day- the color bleeding into him

- And it’s not exactly common for soul mate marks to disappear but he doesn’t want to lose the flowers- he doesn’t want to lose the possibility he has with you

- When you wake up your arms are flushed with creamy white crane feathers and blue tipped black wings. But unlike all of the other times your soul mark has changed this time there is something there.

- A flower held in a beak- the tiny yellow 4 petals of a forsythia. And you remember an advertisement you saw on your way to work of the forsythia festival that would be at it’s peak today.

- (Forsythia’s mean anticipation btw)

- So you go to the forsythia festival and bring your camera- it’s a warm day- so you wear a white shirt letting your mess of a mark show for once. Its small but it’s enough.

- You’re walking through the isles of forsythia when Namjoon spots you.

- He’s wearing a tank top to show his soulmate mark as well and he’s a little cold- but the brown branches of his mark contrast nicely against it.

- At first he doesn’t pay the cute girl any mind- after all he’s interested in finding his soul mate not someone who’s bird watching.

- At first he thinks the white wings are scars, but then you turn, and he sees the beak clutching the bloom on the inside of your wrist- the same flowers that vine across his chest

- And he walks up to you, you turn and lock eyes with him, your eyes slowly run over his chest where the flowers are blooming as he takes in your arms- bird wings.

- He should have known that would be your mark.

- He listens to the birds every morning when he wakes up- he’s written songs about wings, about Baepsae and flying away.

- No wonder it was hard for you to find him. No wonder it was almost all up to him.

- You are also amused by the flowers- you’ve always loved them so much.

- Taking every chance to walk the nature trails around Seoul on your spare weekends.

- You introduce yourself and when he looks down the flowers are blooming slowly from the forsythias to the red spider flower and white orange blossom (devotion and eternal love).

- The wings are shifting beating at a hummingbirds pace and his gaze paints green and purple-red iridescence on your skin. For a second you almost think you see a butterfly.

- You just sit for a second with him and watch your soulmate marks shift.

- Taehyung and Hoseok give you both a moment and disappear to wander the trails.

- Namjoon smiles down at you showing you his dimples that you can't help but think are sooooo freaking adorable.

- You’re smiling too- you can’t imagine that you almost gave up on a this-this connection that’s electric and so strong.

- He runs his fingers over the winds on your arms and you feel like he’s rubbing sparks into your skin.

- Namjoon smiles and plays with your fingers, as you sit down on a bench and introduce yourselves.

- A yellow petal falls into your hair, and he brushes it away before pressing his lips to yours. Feathers burst from your skin as pink roses bloom on his collarbones and you break apart laughing.

- “You are so annoying!” you say, and he looks incredulous, “Do you know how many bird watching clubs I tried to join to find you?” his smile is incandescent when he presses your hand to his face.

- Now that he’s got your skin against his he never wants to let go of the feeling.

- “I could say the same about you- I must of read every single book on the meaning of flowers.” You giggle at that and extend a finger out to trace the blooms on his neck, and he shivers. He runs his hands across your shoulders his long fingers trace feathers and fletching’s and the wings that have sprouted on your shoulders.

- At the beginning of your courtship, you meet up in most public places, where he can watch your feathers change and you can watch the garden on his chest.

- You meet up at coffee shops and he doodles flowers on your hands while you talk about your life, your work just everything.

- He understands you so well. and when he talks too you he finally feels like he’s found someone that will make his life easy- everything is almost effortless with you.

- Accidentally swapping coffees to find you both like the same amount of sugar- he picks up your favorite food by accident- somehow just knowing without asking. You run your fingers through his hair in just the way he likes. You know instantaneously by looking at him on the bad days that he needs a minute too just be quiet and listen to the birds.

- Eventually you shift too more intimate dates.

- Where you end upon top of him tracing the azaleas while he brushes his fingers over the expanse of your tattooed back. Today you have the white wings of a swan.

- He calls you” angel”, and you Jokingly call him “flower”

- And you both can't help but think that the beginning of your soul mate marks was so stupid and infuriating but now you wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.

- Your apartment has birdfeeders on the balcony- and he buys you flowers every chance he gets. Somehow your home always ends up smelling like roses.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to contribute to the “born this way” conversation, but I’m not fully sure how to articulate my ideas. For me I feel like my identity... like I feel I was “born this way” like I’ve had intermittent dysphoria for as long as I can remember. But also as far as mspec labels go I could ID as pan, or poly, or Omni, but I’ve always felt bi fits and that’s the identity I choose. My partner tho, feels that they, more than anything, chose to be bi (1/2)

My partner feels that they had no inclination towards being anything other than a straight man until well into their thirties, when, due to a lot of factors, they decided any company was good company and decided to see if they liked being with men. They had a good experience, and they feel they could have left it at that but CHOSE to continue to pursue their attraction to men, and then much more recently, in doing their own research about gender identity and being around me (2/3 oops)

They chose to question their gender identity (which as of right now is inconclusive), and my partner feels happy as a bi questioning person, but also felt happy as a straight man and could have remained so but chose to be happy a different way. Idk it’s complicated/messy and I don’t really get it but it’s how my partner feels and I believe them. And then Political lesbianism is a thing. Idk it’s hard for me to wrap my head around I wish I could contribute more. It’s def not one size fits all tho

I feel like - in a lot of ways, being queer and identifying as queer changed me as a person. it changed everything, from the way I think about and approach new topics, the way I see myself and the world, my politics, my tastes in books and art. queerness is fundamental to me, but I can conceive not being queer. if I didn’t know it was an option to identify this way, if I didn’t grow in a home that encouraged me to question and pursue new avenues, I would be a different person. and I cannot with any certainty say that I would definitely identify as queer at some point, if not at 14 then at 17, 19, 25, 40. I think I am happier for being queer, because it is relieving to share an experience and a community (things which have been difficult for me in the past) with people who love and support me. I like having a voice and an opinion on issues. I like my politics. I don’t like being discriminated against, but who does?

there are so many ways to have a fluid identity. you can be the same person all your life with the same experiences and label yourself differently over time. like your partner. one could be happy in one’s assigned roles but happier in a different set that they sought out and choose (kudos to your partner for keeping an open mind and allowing themselves to be happy in a non-normative way, btw), you can have a fluid identity that changes with time, you can be one thing and identify as another, you can refuse a labels on principle, you can be a political lesbian (or it’s equivalents, I suppose? I don’t know if we have something analogous to political lesbianism in other queer subgroups. I think certain parts of the ace community are the closest we’ve come)

the problem is the dichotomy that seems to be essential to this debate - that you can only have one or the other, that people on one side keep trying to erase the opposing narrative. I frankly don’t know. I’ve only been a part of this debate for a few months and all my thoughts about BTW are informed by personal experience and what I have stumbled across on tumblr. not a comprehensive start by any means. but ime it’s always the BTWs who are trying to shove differing narratives away, and not the choicers. maybe @korrasera and i have different experiences! in fact, I think we have very different experiences

The problem I’m trying to highlight, the whole reason I made this post, is that I’ve never seen someone suggest that only BTW is valid. In fact, the only times I’ve ever seen people discussing BTW was to specifically suggest that we have to do whatever we can to erase it as an idea because they perceive it as being inherently exclusionary, as though the existence of people who were BTW meant that people could not be queer, gay, lesbian, or trans without having been born in that state. I think it’s a reasonable assumption to consider such intentions as being somewhat noble, since they’re meant to criticize and deconstruct social constructs of legitimacy, but I literally never see the topic raised without it being ‘let’s get rid of the idea that BTW people exist, it’s not true and it hurts the cause’.

I have a different experience. I’ve seen BTW discussed as the only right way to be, and not only by exclusionists (I wouldn’t be able to find receipts on this - I remade my blog recently, and lost all my likes and the people I was following). even when I talk to people irl, I’m forced to resort to a narrative I don’t have any stake in to get my point across, a narrative that doesn’t help me. it’s frustrating and alienating. and I still don’t think we should do away with BTW. I think we make room for people like me to exist and talk, and define clearly what it means so more people can figure out whether or not they fit.

My girlfriend Marna has been a queer activist since the late 80s. She’s told me about the incredible deliberation and debates LGBTQ+ activists had, in the late 90s and early 00s as the community began to see past the AIDS crisis and immediate goals of “surviving a plague” and “burying our dead.” There were a lot of things we wanted to achieve, but we had to decide how to allocate our scarce reserves of money, labour, publicity, and public goodwiil. Those were the discussions that decided the next big goals we’d pursue were same-sex marriage equality and legal recognition of medical gender transition.

From hearing her tell it, it seems like it was actually a wrenching decision, because it absolutely left a lot of people in the dust. A lot of people, her included, had broad agendas based on sexual freedom and the rights of people to do whatever they wanted with their bodies and consenting partners—and they agreed to put their broader concerns aside and drill down, very specifically, onto the rights of cis gays and lesbians to marry, and the ability to legally change your sex and gender.

As a political tactic it was terrifically effective. […]

Activists of 20 years ago chose to sideline and diminish efforts to blur and abolish the gender binary. Efforts to promote alternative family structures, including polyamorous families and non-sexual bonds between non-related adults. Efforts to fight the Christian cultural message that sex is dirty, sinful, bad, and in need of containment. Efforts to promote sexual pleasure as a positive good.

Fuck it, lets do this. I’ve got so many feelings about this. For disclaimers sake, the boys are 20-25, so college age. This is long.

Henry “You are my Sunshine but you’re also a Pain” Bowers

First of all, he was’t ready. Nothing prepared him to end up alone, with a baby that was his newest and most precious responsibility.

The mothers either DIED, or straight up left the baby in his arms and was like “your problem now” either way, he does not consider adoption.

Called Vic first, actually crying, because how the fuck does he do better for this kid than his dad did for him? He has no idea how to nurture, to care, to help something grow and thrive. He confesses his fears, and Vic gets Belch and the three of them drive to the closest department store, picking out baby shit.

Has no idea how bottles work. Gets the cheapest kind possible, and is so upset when the baby wont drink from them (texture might be off, his dumb ass didnt warm the milk, his dumb ass gave the baby COWS MILK, the list goes on) and screeches in frustration when they leak because, yet again, he got the cheapest fuckers possible

He’d be out of his dads house by this time, probably college age (about 20-25) but he has made a point to not let his dad know of his child’s existence, because lets face it, Butch would wanna see his grandkid (especially if its a boy). So, Henry keeps the information that he’s a new dad on lock down

Calls Mama Huggins weekly for advice, and actively looks at parenting hacks online. He’s trying his best to be a good dad, and would take extra shifts for work to make ends meet. His kid would probably go into daycare sometimes, but he doesnt like leaving them with strangers and just tries to get one of the guys (or Mama Huggins) to take them for a few hours.

Uses his kid as a chick magnet. Goes to parks and hits on the single moms while he helps his toddler roam around. Gets a lot of ass because of this, since he comes off as a very caring dad (he is, surprisingly).

Dresses his baby girl up like bad asses. His daughter wears his old bandanna with her princess outfit (claiming she is a cowgirl princess, because of course she is) or gets a jean vest with decently kid friendly patches on it, and parades her around when he gets the chance. Insanely protective of her, and follows her when she plays at the park and later as she gets older, he makes her text him where she is at all times. Low key helicopter dad. The type of dad to clean a gun in front of her new boyfriend, 11/10.

His son’s hair gets styled into a fohawk daily and he’s encouraged to wear cool printed shirts his uncles (the rest of the gang) get him that have various metal bands on them and stuff. Teaches him sports, and drags him along to baseball games when he can. Was a bit torn when he heard his son was causing trouble in school, but decides that he cant have his kid doing the same shit he did and nips the bullying in the bud. His son got his temper, and it upsets Henry sometimes how easy it is for them to snap at each other once he gets older.

Takes his kid fishing, hiking, rides on motorcycles, ect. Lots of out door activities. His favorite is to take his kid out fishing, because they’re TRAPPED with him and he gets to spend the day with his mini-me, making crappy jokes and teaching them how to do proper techniques, like he always wished his dad would have done with him.

Gets really stern with his kid though. Takes no fucking bullshit from them, and lives the line “because I said so”, expecting his kid to listen. He loves them, he would NEVER raise a hand to them, but he’s not above a sit down and heavy glare if they mouth off to him or act up in public.

Lives his life better to make his kid’s life better. Goes to anger management if he thinks he’s starting to emulate Butch, and he’s explained to his kid why they’re so distant from his family. Doesn’t articulate what Butch has done to him, but makes it a point to focus on the fact that they Do. Not. Talk. To. Butch.

Makes a point to take his kid to school every day. Tells his kid how much he loves them. They do not go a day without a clap on the shoulder and a small little smile that he wears just for them.

Reggie “GET THAT OUT OF YOUR MOUTH RIGHT FUCKIN’ NOW” Huggins

He was a little shocked when he ended up with a baby. Dazed, confused. He just sat there with this bundle, all soft and small, and held them close. He didn’t know what to do, but does anyone when they become a single parent without word?

If his s/o died, he would be heart broken, but pull through for the kid. If his s/o dumped the baby on him and ran, he’d be fucking furious and vow to never let them within arms reach of HIS child.

The best at easing into parenthood. He told his mama that adoption wasn’t an option, and that he was going to take care of the baby. “I can do it,” he told her, “I’m a man, and men take care of their kids.”

Mama Huggins is overjoyed to be a grandma, even if she claims shes a little young to start being called Nannie, but she spoils that baby rotten. Reggie has to fight to keep her from buying the kid so many different outfits, as she goes overboard and buys too many, and they grow out of them before they can even be tried on.

Leaves the kid with his mom to work, which is fine for Mama Huggins, but Reggie feels like he’s ghosting his kid when he does it. So he works harder and advances in his career as much as possible, wanting to get to place where he can maybe get extra days off to be with his kid.

Wakes up early to make them breakfast. Every morning he sits down with them, from infancy till they leave his house (read as, his moms, he never moves out lets be real). He wakes them up gently, or flicks on the lights and heaves a great big “UP AND AT ‘EM, KIDDO!” But its all with love.

Doesnt seem interested in dating for the most part, but ends up meeting someone with kids at some point in time, and is happy to have his kid get a new sibling. He always wanted one himself.

Gives in too easily if his kids misbehave. If they cry, it HURTS him, and he just lets them do as they please. Had to nip this in the bud before they got into school though, because he wasn’t going to deal with a spoiled brat for 12+ years.

Straps his kid into the backseat of the Trans-Am, and has a Dad Bag under the seats for bottles, toys, and general baby shit. Patrick likes playing peek a boo with his kid, and Vic only complains a little bit of he has to feed the baby.

Stops going out with the guys, and is worried that it will dampen his relationship with them It doesnt, they just start coming over to his house and hanging out. Henry was scared to hold the baby at first, but Reggie eased him into it, and now Henry’s the first one to grab the nugget and bounce them on his knee to calm them down.

If he had a daughter, jesus christ. Jesus H Christ. His most precious gem, his princess, the light of his life. He spends free time doing tea parties, letting her “help” him with fixing Amy, and lets her run wild in the neighborhood. She is fierce, she is the wilderness- NO, HONEY, DONT PICK THAT SNAKE UP PLEASE- DROP IT. DROP IT. NO, DONT ARGUE WITH DADDY. DROP IT!

His son would have a very healthy and loving relationship with him. Everything is open for discussion, and he tries to lead his son into a better light than bullying or the like. Lots of sundays are spent in the front yard, tossing around a football while his son asks the craziest, but most wonderful shit he has ever heard. “Dad, whys girls gotta be so.. weird?” “Dad, do you think Luke Skywalker would have been cooler if he was a sith?” “Dad, if we die, do we meet god, or do we gotta wait in line with our guardian angel?” Loves his boy, cherishes him. He can do no wrong.

Goes to every single parent/teacher conference, and puffs up in pride when they praise his kid. Because, of course they’re praising them! He raised them right!

Victor “Pinterest saved my life” Criss

Legit hid the baby from his parents/bros for a good week before he ran out of excuses as to why they hadn’t seen him for days. He’s at a loss of what to do, and considers adoption. He isnt a paternal guy. he thinks, this wont work out.

Already moved out, like, come on. He’s a rich boy, his parents set him up in a nice apartment/condo in Bangor for school.

If his s/o was still alive, he’d have given the baby back to them. This only works if they ghosted town, or are dead. Otherwise, he’d have been like “fuck no”

Finally figures he’ll give fatherhood a shot, and quickly realizes how much he did NOT bargain for.

Reggie turned up to help one day with Vic holding his baby and sobbing back at the baby while it shrieked and squirmed, the poor guy having no idea what to do. Vic was escorted to the bedroom, and given a nap whole Belch attempted to get the baby to sleep.

Buys all the nicest shit the baby could ever need or want. Lots of sleepless nights are spent with him rocking his baby and scanning amazon, thinking that yet another Sophie the Giraffe is exactly what his demon spawn needs to keep from sobbing through the night

Turns to online archives and pinterest for advice, and slowly becomes a better dad. Lots of trial and error, trips to the emergency room from Patrick convincing a half-dead Vic that his baby’s cough is from the baby black plague, and some angry sobbing of his own leads to a decent routine that makes him and his kiddo happy.

Instagrams his kid, because to be fair, he made a gorgeous baby. Sends lots of photos of the kid to the guys, and Patrick uses some of the most unflattering ones as reaction memes, because he is a dick. Vic has laughed at them, despite being furious Patrick would dare to make his baby a meme.

Literally cried when his kid called him “Dada” for the first time. On the floor. Sobbing. He called Reggie and made him come over. Henry and Patrick came around and tried to get the bay to say swears. They got them to say “sheet” which is pretty close to “shit” so they called it a win.

Throws the biggest birthday parties for his kid. Confetti? Everywhere. Cake? Three layers and professionally made. Presents? Out of this world.

Most stylish child of the group’s kids. Sunglasses, designer clothes. That kid dresses better than you do by the time they’re five. They own it too, and flaunt it for the camera, because Vic takes 89,005,467 photos of his child on the daily.

Taught his kid Beastie Boys songs, and there are videos of his kid rapping along to “Intergalactic”. Vic is so proud of his kid.

Friend dad. Has a hard time punishing his kid if they do something wrong, and sometimes makes up for his own mistakes (raising his voice, getting to upset) by giving them gifts. Its not an amazing system, but his kid is humble…ish.

Having a daughter, that boy is her best friend. She can tell him anything, it wont phase him. Willingly talks about boys, clothes, music. Loves to take her to the park and watch her knock the boys down a peg or two. she inherits his sharp tongue, and its scary how fast she goes from 1 to 101. Blunt child, that one.

A boy? Vic’s son is given the coolest shit, there is no need for want with this boy. Probably some awful mix of fuck boy and wanna be rapper, but Vic loves him anyhow. Shows him off to the gang CONSTANTLY, and shows up in almost matching outfits without realizing it. Its cringey, but it could be worse. Teaches him how to throw a punch and encourages him to kick ass if people step up against him.

Puts his kid in after school tutoring, and thinks bonding time is shopping or watching TV together. Fills their schedules with sports, dance, and music. Expects a lot out of them, academically.

Loves his kid, even if they’re being an asshole, not matter what.

Patrick “You’re Demon Spawn and I adore that” Hockstetter

Was not here for this dad shit. Considered chucking the baby into the system, and would have done it too, if his mother had’t made him face the music.

Total “This is what you get for having unprotected sex, Patrick” rant from her. It ended with him being forced with a baby and his mother’s watchful eye on him. Shes not going to have another Avery on her hands.

Hates the baby the first few MONTHS. No love. Nothing there. Lets it cry itself hoarse, barely remembers to feed it, the type to forget an infant in a shopping market. Considers the possibility of it being real, since it came from him in one way or another, and feels a little threatened.

Drops the baby off with his parents 99% of the time. the 1% is when his parents force the baby back with him.

The first time he feels a little something for the kid is after getting them back from his parents and sitting in his apartment, with him screaming at the kid to shut the fuck up, (the baby is sobbing, lets be real) and they just stop. Right then and there, silence.

They lock eyes, and Patrick swears he sees a flash of something behind their little baby eyes, almost as if they are betrayed he’d treat them that way, before they quietly sniffle. And then Patrick Hockstetter, the man, the myth, the self proclaimed Literal Satan, feels guilt for the first time.

He picks them up and calms himself down, bouncing them on his hip and softly talks to them. No hate, no love really, just apathetic words that a baby couldnt understand. He does that for hours, until the baby is sleeping, and even then he keeps going. Pours out every thought he’s ever had to this little version of him, and the next time he puts them in their crib, he does so gently.

Lowering them down and tucking a blanket in around them. He decides they’re worth something to him that day, and everyone in his life see a drastic turn in his reactions towards his child.

Kind of a distant dad, but his kid knows that Patrick is their father and that he, yes, loves them. He’ll still drop his kid off with his parents sometimes on weekends, but as the kid grows up and he starts seeing more and more of himself in them, he’d be more attentive.

Goes on philosophical rants with his kid, and expects them to keep up. Raises his kid to question everything, and they grow up almost just as creepy and weird as him. He’s proud that they’re a little freaky, otherwise he’d be worried they weren’t his.

Patrick wouldn’t do too well with a daughter. He’d make it work, but there would be some issues. He has no idea what common ground to go off from, and would force his daughter to be more tom boyish and enjoy the same shit he does. Wouldn’t care if she was a bully in school, actually encourages it. Hands her cash, shares his weed stash with her once she’s older, and bids her good day. Doesnt see reason to punish her for misbehaving hopes she doesn’t end up dead in a ditch somewhere from her smart mouth. Grades are the least of his concerns. Will kill anyone who hurts his daughter though, and makes good on his threats too.

Patrick thrives with a son. A mini-me, that is almost indistinguishable from himself. Same creepy little smile, same predatory tilt of the shoulders and with eyes that pierce your damn soul. Praises his son to the high heavens, calls the boy a genius, and 100% thinks of him to be the Jesus to his God, if you feel me. The promised one, type of shit. Think of a young Trick from Black Mirror, and thats the kind of son Patrick hopes to have, if not MORE edgy.

Halloween is his favorite holiday as a dad, because he takes his kid out and scares the shit out of other children and teaches them to steal the candy.

The family photo of him and his kid is them out with the gang, with his kid (about 7) wearing his jacket by a bonfire and flipping the camera off, him squatting beside them and doing the same damn thing with the biggest shit eating grin. Ah. Parenting. Patrick’s a natural.
