Keeping secrets from Klaus Mikaelson was not an easy task. It’s draining and has had me on edge for ages. It’s not that i don’t trust him with my secret but it’s very personal to me and i know that he was born over a thousand years ago which could mean that maybe he sees the world in a more old fashioned way? Would he even know what non-binary means? Would he think i’ve been lying to his face this whole time? Or what if he thinks its a joke?

Questions like that are the reason i would rather just swallow down the worry, not tell him and pretend everything is fine.

And it was until this afternoon…

I was out with Cami and Davina, we were wondering round different stools in New Orleans to find anything that we thought was nice to go in our rooms or that we could wear. We even did a fake witch reading for a joke, we had been out for lunch so now we were just walking around for a little while. Both Cami and Davina knew that i was non-binary and said that they would always love me and they immediately began adapting to my new gender neutral name. What i hadn’t realised was that Klaus was also by the stools trying to find me and had heard Cami yell “y/n” over one of the stands and motioning me to come over

When i got back home to the compound and strolled up the stairs i peeked my head into Klaus’s art room to check how his day was but he was already stood at the doorway with his arms crossed and a glare on his face directed at me… although if you looked enough he just looked kind of upset and a little angry

“Did something happen? Is someone hurt?” were my go to questions hoping that nothing tragic had happened while i was out. However he just scoffed and narrowed his eyes

“Who exactly is y/n? or should i ask who you are? What this entire time you thought you could deceive me!? Are you a witch? Here to take my daughter from me again!“ Klaus’s voice got progressively louder making tears spring to my eyes as i backed to the wall when he walked forward, his hands on my shoulders with a firm grip

“Who are you and why are you in my house” it was dangerously calm whisper and i tried my best to collect myself

“I’m y/n but not because i’m a lier or a bad person! I just sort of changed my name and i you don’t know about it yet but i was gonna tell y-“ he cut me me off before i could finish

“Do you think me a fool? How would i not know if you had changed your name, Im with you every day” it began harsh but his face had softened a little when he noticed tears freely streamed down my face

“I kept it a secret because i didn’t think that you would understand” my voice was below a whisper and if it weren’t for his supernatural hearing i don’t think he would have heard anything

“understand what love?” his hand cupped my jaw when i wouldn’t look at him as he guided my gaze back to his

“I’m not a girl Klaus…but i’m not exactly a boy either.. i’m just sort of neither? i don’t… it’s..” i stopped when his lips pressed against mine, soft and gentle, i kissed him back with the same tenderness before he pulled away

“You’re non-binary? Or do you prefer not to be labelled?” i just kind of blinked at him when he said that, surprise was evident on my face that he had any idea of what i was on about. Klaus simply smiled and kissed my cheek

“And y/n is a great name, it suits you very well… i apologise for thinking you would betray me, it was a pathetic thought. I’m sorry you didn’t think i would accept you, i’ll love you no matter your name or how you identify”

i wrapped my arms around him and buried my head in his neck

“thank you nik…i love you too, always”

his arms circled my waist and his hands rubbed my back

A/N: reader is referred to as ‘prince,’ as it sounds more gender-neutral but it’s only used like once.

LOVE WAS NEVER SOMETHING THAT occupied Albedo's mind all that much. He was much more focused on how he would rule his kingdom rather than who he would rule his kingdom with.

But still, his mother wanted him to find a lover for fear that he would get lonely once he grows older. He has reassured her on numerous occasions that he wouldn't get lonely but she still tried finding a good match for him relentlessly.

On the other hand, prince Y/N was the type of person one would call, a hopeless romantic.

Their parents always wanted them to be as independent as they could be without a partner and even though they met expectations, they still longed for someone they could express love for romantically.

So, in their best attempts for wanting their child to be as happy as they can be, they looked for potential suitors for Y/N.

Ladies, lords, and non binary royalty came from far and wide but none lit up a spark in their heart just as it happened in the books that they have read about love.

They were beginning to believe that true love was just a fantasy that was made up for young children to believe in trying to make sure their world stays as rainbows and sunshine for as long as possible.

Having no other choice, Rhine - Albedo's mother - and Y/N parents arranged a marriage between the two hoping for the best.

And so, Y/N waited for their future beloved hoping that they would light a spark in their heart, knowing that the chances were slim.

Albedo however, just sighed while looking out on the scenery through the carriage window.

He suspected that Rhine would pull something like this but only hoped that she wouldn't. Perhaps if he had told her that he would not like to be arranged into a marriage, he wouldn't be there, sat in a carriage waiting for his future 'lover'.

The thought of love never interested him as a child and at the age he was starting to explore those feelings he was only met with disappointment. Met with girls with distasteful personalities and boys with egos bigger than their iq's he didn't find anyone there suited for him.

He then began thinking that no one out there would truly of him and he would never truly love them. True love becoming just a young childs fantasy to him.

When they arrived at the L/N's palace they were immediately greeted by the royals themselves.

"Hello, Queen Rhine," the king bowed as did his wife and child. "No need for that, I am no queen here in your kingdom," Rhine chuckled. "You are our guests so it would be impolite to not greet you any other way," F/N said raising his head from the bow his family doing the same.

"Now may I introduce you to Y/N?" He said gesturing over to you. "Greetings, I am Y/N L/N, pleasure to make your acquaintance," they smiled.

"I am Albedo, Albedo Kreideprinz, it is my honor to meet you Y/N," Albedo greeted returning the smile.

Based off of first impressions, Albedo seemed like a genuinely kind gentleman to Y/N but they were still hesitant about him. They have seen many suitors in the past that have seemed to be the exact same but the only thing they were interested in was the power Y/N held.

To Albedo, Y/N seemed to be more of an extrovert than an introvert. They introduced themselves with a lot of energy laced in their tone making him think that socializing was easier for them rather than him.

How wrong they both were of each other.

"I suppose we'll leave you two be for now to, y'know, bond," M/N smiled. The three soon left the entrance only leaving the sound of their footsteps echoing.

It was an awkward silence between the two but Y/N broke the silence saying "Do you, wanna hang out in the gardens?" "Sure."

They then took his hand guiding him through the halls of the castle. Albedo was stunned for a second not expecting their actions but quickly relaxed. As they arrived at a pair of double doors Y/N opened them, but it wasn't what Albedo expected.

"With all due respect Mx. Y/N, I don't think this is the garden that you were talking about," he said looking at the towering bookshelves.

"Well I didn't know what else we were gonna do in the garden so I supposed we should grab a few books, that's alright with you right?" They were expecting his face to say 'Seriously?' and his eyes full of judgement but they surprisingly didn't. His eyes lit up and had the cutest expression on his face.

"Of course, what books do you like to read?" he replied wanting to know more about his future beloved.

"Hm, I'm fine with all different genres of books but I've really enjoyed reading things centered around mythology recently, what about you?" They inquired wanting to know more. "Well, I've always enjoyed reading non-fiction books."

"Really?"

"Yes, it always surprises people when I say that but it's true, I've always enjoyed learning things about the mysteries of this world and coming up with theories about what it's true purpose is," Albedo rambled while they were walking around the library.

"Huh, I've never thought about things like that. I guess I'm to lost in my own world to think about those types of things," they chuckled. It was now Albedo's turn to be surprised. When he rambled about his tastes in reading, or anything really people always called him boring making him hesitant to share but Y/N seemed to be genuinely about him. He really appreciates that.

They stopped at one of the bookshelves letting Y/N gather some of the books they wanted. Albedo took a few glances at the books they took off the shelves.

"What's the genre of those books?" he inquired to Y/N causing them to avert their gaze away from him. "Romance . . ." They mumbled, barely over a whisper. "Come again?"

"Romance," they said loud enough for him to hear. "I've actually never read any romance novel before," he adds on.

"You've never read romance before?!" They exclaim looking at him. "Never," he chuckled putting his hand behind his neck.

They immediately grab his hand leading him to the nearest table, placing the books they previously holding down. "Stay here," they ordered placing him in a chair while scurrying off into the bookshelves.

He chuckles at their actions taking a better look at the books on the table.

Before he knew it, they were already back with a stack of books in their hands nearly covering their entire face.

"Alrighty, um, I know this seems like a lot, but that's because it is," they say nonchalantly placing the books on the table, "But, I will only give you three of these to read. Unless you want more of course."

And so they began going through the books, Y/N explaining the pros and cons with minimal spoilers with Albedo listening and asking questions here and there.

It really comforted both of them that they wouldn't be married to someone they wouldn't enjoy their time with. They would be married to each other.

Who knows, they might be each other's true love after all.

I feel like he'd know the most about LGBT+ identities out of these five people.

He would love it if you taught him more about it.

100% supportive and isn't afraid to defend you at any given moment in the event that someone is hate criming you.

It also gives him a warm feeling that you trust him enough to come out to him.

Josuke Higashikata

"Cool... what does that mean?"

Listen, he's trying his best.

I feel like he'd know the least about LGBT+ identities out of these five, but feel free to educate him.

He'd love to listen to anything you say already, so I can imagine it's even better if he's learning about something that can relate to you.

Once you explain what being non-binary means, he would reassure you that he supports you and also tell you he's honoured that's he's someone you can trust with that information.

Transfem Katsuki (edited as of Nov. 2023. Katsuki hadn't died yet when this was written so bear with me.)

In honor of "fuck I thought about transfem Katsuki and now I'm in love with her again" and also because of a shitty discourse post I saw. Enjoy.

She will NOT figure it out until at least second year of UA.

She's always been uneasy about the whole boy thing. Specifically boy. Like she's one of the guys ok sure but she's not a boy.

We know how kind Aldera is to anyone who's slightly out of the norm (ie Deku) and Katsuki is especially aware given she was part of the problem. So yeah, internalized transphobia (+homophobia) we love to see it./s

Getting into UA and quickly realizing that like more than half the class is openly and proudly queer in some way gave her whiplash, and as much of a bully as she still was at this point, she didn't say anything.

She tried to convince herself it was to not get in trouble and gamble her place at UA, but really she was just glad to not be somewhere as fucked as her middle school.

And if the trans ponytail chick makes her question who she really wants to be... well that's nobody's business.

As I am very subtly implying, Momo ends up being a big part of Katsuki accepting herself and her identity as a trans woman.

Katsuki loves her friend group (she'll never admit it but she does, so much) but she associates them with her old group from Aldera somewhat unconsciously, and is terrified they'll push her away, even if she knows she's just. Straight up wrong.

As in, so incredibly wrong. Sero and Jirou are non binary ("Whatever the hell that means") Kirishima is a proud trans man ("More of a man than any of the cretins at Aldera will ever be") Mina's dating a trans girl from another school ("Camie Utsushit or smth") and Kaminari is so many different flavors of queer its almost impressive.

Really, her friends are probably the ones that should be worried, she tries to remind herself, hammering it in her head. Katsuki was an asshole for most of her life, they should be the ones scared of her. They're not though. For some fuckin' reason.

So yeah, talking to her friend group is out of the question. Momo though.

Momo is a special kind of trustworthy. Momo is the kind of person you'd give your entire life savings, your child, your car and your wife to. Katsuki hates that, she hates trusting people, it always ends badly, so she prefers doing stuff on her own.

Except it doesn't always end badly. Especially not with Yaomomo.

Every early saturday morning, Katsuki's and Momo's workout sessions happen at the same time. Eventually, they start talking during that time. Katsuki eventually asks about Momo being trans, more or less convinced she'll tell her to go fuck herself (she obviously doesn't).

It helps, despite the fact that her experience isn't the same as Katsuki's at all. Momo always knew she was a girl, her parents always were supportive about it, and money really wasn't a problem to help her transition once she was old enough to make that decision. Hell, she can literally make estrogen.

Katsuki then comes to the realization that yeah, she's probably a girl. Not like I'll ever do shit about it, she thinks.

Things kinda stay stagnant for a time then. Katsuki has way more important stuff to worry about (like exams and also her and her friends almost dying etc etc) and the self-hatred that simmers in her head constantly doesn't make it really fun to actually think about herself.

Second year comes around.

Because this is me, and my blog, and I do what I want, I present to you my son, Shinsou. Most trans guygirl t4t lesbian of all time. In my heart.

So Shinsou is very trans in the most mysterious way you could think of, so mysterious he himself doesn't really know what is going on with his gender. He doesn't exactly care, he just vibes (any pronouns).

They're pretty knowledgeable on queer stuff because it loves to read wikipedia pages until 5AM when it can't sleep and got lost on multiple LGBTQ+ related forums when she was 13. (He also knows a lot about chickens and lizards.)

She can just breathe the queer coming out of Katsuki, but when they ask they're just met with "oh Bakugou? Yeah no, he's cishet. Our token straight man. To prove we're diverse, etc." (-Shouji, entirely serious). Shinsou's not buying it but she doesn't like assuming, so he shuts up.

Meanwhile, Katsuki has nothing to think about anymore now that things have settled and she's not getting attacked by her self-hatred constantly, so she unfortunately ends up thinking about her gender (truly tragic. Genuinely though, it's almost distressing because she pushed the thought down for so long that it's scary to think about).

Because early mornings and nights are a time outside of our world, it's again around 5AM that Katsuki talks to someone who might help her with her gender problem. Shinsou in fact, who's of course awake on a Monday morning after a sleepless night, eating cereal out of the box.

Katsuki finds herself chatting with the weirdo and eventually asks what the fuck kinda gender it is, if only to be able to call her something else than the weirdo in her head.

The realization that gender is a construct and doesn't really fucking exist so it doesn't actually matter is somewhat of an epiphany for Katsuki. Like she's silent for multiple minutes. Shinsou is getting scared

Quietly, she mutters a small "I think I'm a girl" to Shinsou. It smiles and says "Nice. There's not enough girls in this class." and goes back to its cereal.

Katsuki has no fucking idea how that fucker exists. He's an anomaly in the timeline. Katsuki adores them.

(Platonically. Girl doesn't have time for romantic love. Yes I'm also making her aromantic, because aro Katsuki is the loml and one of my fave hcs.)

After that weird but insightful conversation, Katsuki finally asks Momo for help, taking her up on an offer she had made one morning. ("If you ever need my help for anything concerning [your gender bullshit], come see me.")

Momo being the absolute QUEEN that she is, she assembles all transgirls and cisgirls of the class + whoever else would like to join (which ends up being Jirou, Shinsou and Aoyama) and they all go on a shopping trip with Katsuki to help her figure out what she likes.

Does she want to wear makeup? Does she want feminine clothes? Or long hair? Does she want boobs? Or thinner traits?

Does she just want different pronouns and to be addressed viewed as a girl?

Mina shortens that as "What kinda girl is Katsuki".

I'll do you the answer here so this doesn't take forever, because the process of figuring it out must be long.

Mainly, the verdict will eventually be that Katsuki didn't really feel comfortable in the box she, her parents and Aldera put her in, which is a sort of vague idea of a Boy, Man, Son. She's mean and a bitch and probably a tomboy and she's a girl. That's all. She doesn't want of any of that flowery pink crap and being "gracefully feminine" like Momo is, she'll still kick your teeth in. Being a girl isn't fundamentally part of her identity or her personality, but it's who she's comfortable being.

She does enjoy skirts once she feels comfortable enough to wear them. She grows her hair a bit too (because she doesn't wanna look like her mother at first, but she ends up liking the look) and puts it up in a ponytail.

Makeup is a bitch but it looks cool, so she lets Mina, Aoyama and Shinsou use her face as a canevas for their weird makeup experiments. She thinks she looks like a clown half the time though (she doesn't, she's really cute). She mostly does eyeliner, which she already knew how to do before starting her transition, and very rarely lipgloss.

She doesn't really care about having breasts or softer traits, mainly because her traits are already pretty androgynous when she looks at herself, and she's already got big pecs so like. Basically tits. It's the same, it doesn't really matter. She's happy with how her body looks, she worked to have a healthy body and she doesn't care if it's "not a woman's body" or whatever the fuck. She likes how her body is and she doesn't really care about changing it.

She thinks of using she/they (like Jirou) but doesn't exactly care about they/them? Like they're not bad to have used on her (way better than he/him) but she prefers just using she/her.

She doesn't change her first name. It means victory, so it's already perfect for her. It's her name.

Some of her friends (the ones who aren't scared of death cough cough Shinsou) call her Katsuki-chan (Kacchan is copyrighted) but most her friends call her Kats', because she let slip one time she thinks it's cute.

Idk, if it's translated I'm ok but if it's not (and I don't understand the languages, like wtf Carterwood fandom, stop writing whole sentences in Russian, I'm learning it but I cannot understand everything) well I'm like "what's the point in writing this if I don't understand? Why did you do it, you could've just said nothing" Also, please. Stop it with French or ask me. I'm willing to help you with French but don't post something in French without proofreading because there are A LOT of English sayings that are REALLY weird (in a creepy-pedophilic way) in French (all the things including "girl" or "boy", like PLEASE DO NOT TRANSLATE "MY DARLING GIRL").

[“Tuck: Mm. Well, we have a tradition on this show that if someone self-describes as femme, we ask what femme means to them.

Leah: Ooh, I love that.

Tuck: Yeah, and I’d say you say “femme” on maybe every single page of Care Work alone [Leah laughs], sooo… what does it mean to you?

Leah: Yeah, I would say that femme is a multiverse. It’s always important for me to say like it’s one big, huge, ocean with a lot of different currents in it. It’s a lot of different kinds of queer, and I think there’s ways specifically for me, as I’ve been able to name myself as non-binary as a word in the last 5 or 6 years or so, or more than that even. It’s really taken me back to like, what’s my femme root? And it’s a thing that I think that is maybe not true for every femme who came up in the 90’s, but for me and a lot of people I know it is, I’m like, femme was never “girl”, and it was never “woman”. I wouldn’t have said oh it's a genderqueer identity, other people did, like Cyrée Jarelle Johnson has amazing early writing where he’s like, no femme is always non-binary, it’s always trans, and he makes some really amazing arguments that way.

If you’d asked me in’ 96, is femme genderqueer, I would have been like mmmhhh, but what I did know was that, like my friend Amira made this really beautiful sculpture that just says “femme is for free” and I was like, yay it’s like a portal out of all the ways that being somebody who’s feminized is about pain and oppression and violence. And for me, it was always, again without using that word, a genderqueer identity, it was like, I’m not a girl. I’m not a woman. I kinda itch when I hear those things. And then later on, ironically as there was more organized femme community, I would go to the femme conferences that were happening that were amazing spaces, and that really, I’ve got to say never were like oh, no, no, this is just for the ladies, the cis ladies, but I was like oh there are a lot of femmes out there that are like cis women who really like a 1950’s rockabilly look, and that’s so not me. And I didn’t know it was gender feels, but I was like wow, I feel really ugly next to you. And I feel like I’m trying to do your look, and it’s just not working. And it makes me want to rip my skin off.

So for me, I had an experience in the early 2000’s where there were transmasculine people and femmes. And femmes were not assumed to be trans or non-binary at all. There were a few exceptions, like I had a few friends who were trans women or trans femmes who were partnered with trans guys, but that was pretty rare, and in a lot of kind of AFAB queer community, it was just like there’s trans guys and there’s femmes, and to be femme was to kind of be the girls auxiliary of this setup. There was just so few representations of, I don’t know, trans masculinity of color, you know, and a lot of the models out there that I knew of that I saw around being trans were really binaries. And that wasn’t the fault of any of us, I mean it was the fault of, we were still dealing with the Harry Benjamin system, where it was like, you’ve got to be a guy if you want to get T, and there’s no middle ground. And there was a lot of language then about like, yeah, your job is to kind of be the perfect girlfriend, the perfect support person, and there’s a lot of language of oh you know, transmasculine people are going through this second boyhood, this second teenager-hood, so you’ve gotta really be the girl to make them feel like the boy, and there were just so many ways that binary stuff, sexist stuff, gender stuff, was really not questioned at all in there. And there wasn’t room for me to be like, hey, I’m femme, but I’m not cis and I’m not this kind of perfect girlfriend who my gender is existing to kind of maximize your gender.

And so I think out of that kind of shmear of reality, a lot of femmes I know of different genders have come out about being non-binary or trans, or we’ve figured out different ways to inhabit our genders or explore gender in the past decade, you know, ish, definite in the past like 5 or 6 years, and I think a lot of it has to do with both the enormous work that as femmes we’ve done to create femme community where there’s a multiplicity of femmes speaking to each other, to the work of transfemmes to really unpack the misogyny and sexism in a lot of femme and trans communities. And also things like the beginnings of just harm reduction and openness, and doing away with the Harry Benjamin standard so that people can go and get, can try out microdosing hormones or be like I want this kind of surgery, this kind of gender-affirming care. I don’t just have to kinda get this thing that’s off the rack. I get to kinda design my own gender care. And I think that that’s all this together has created room for all femmes, and all people, but I want to say specifically a lot of femmes who are Generation X or older femmes, to be able to really explore our genders and come out as trans and non-binary and inhabit the world in our bodies and our genders the way we want them to be. Which we did not have room to do or even really think about 15, 20, 30 years ago.

Another Takedown: We're with the big boys, now!

So I happened to spy a copy of the International Socialism journal, issue 157 published in Winter 2018. On the front cover there is a rainbow trans symbol and the title of one of the chapters: Marxism, feminism and transgender politics by Sue Caldwell. I thought wow, this is it, this a defense of genderism within a socialist framework. This'll be my undoing, finally I'll be able to recognise that my terfism is wrong. This isn't randos on tumblr anymore. So, I buy it, turn to page 25, and begin my journey.

And gyns, if you've read those randos on tumblr, I can assure you that there is nothing new here. I'm going to take apart this whole thing. So this is gonna be a long one, folks.

In August 2017 Donald Trump tweeted that transgender people1 were no longer welcome in the military because they are a “burden” due to “tremendous medical costs and disruption”.2 This was the latest in a series of attacks on transgender people which include attempts to overturn legislation that allows people to use the toilet for their preferred gender. Transgender people face the threat of violent attack; 2017 is on course to see the highest recorded number of killings of transgender people in the United States.3 In the UK transphobic hate crime has tripled in the last five years, while prosecution rates have dropped and transgender people report lack of trust in the police. More than a third of transgender employees say they had to leave their job due to discrimination in 2016.4 A survey released by Stonewall reports that eight out of ten trans school and college pupils had self-harmed and 45 percent had tried to take their own lives.5

Hmm. So, right off the back, I think it's a bit of a reach to describe 'banning from military' as an 'attack' on transgender people. I mean, first of all, you're a socialist journal. You're supposed to be materialists, right? Not being made to fight in a war is saving someone from an attack. I know this is a nitpick, but this is what we do, here: we deconstruct narratives and analyse how rhetoric is employed to achieve an affect. A socialist journal uncritically parroting liberal, egalitarian rhetoric? Love to see it.

Now, the '2017 is on course to see the highest reorded number of killings of transgender people in the United States'. So, first of all, kinda curious there's no number used here, right? Why not use it? This is clearly, off the bat, a persuasive piece, so really go for it. The statistics and facts are on your side, right? So what's that really hard-hitting number? 29. Up from 23.

'Some of these cases involve clear anti-transgender bias. In others, the victim’s transgender status may have put them at risk in other ways, such as forcing them into homelessness.'

Hmm. Look, I'm not going to belabour this point, because it's been done by better people elsewhere. Statistically, that's not a significantly high number, even for the transgender population. And it's nothing compared to the murder of women and girls in the same year. But let's talk about what's not being said, here:

Considering how little it takes for a person to ID as trans, there's no reason to assume these people were presenting in any way that makes them a target.

To belabour that point, you guys know we still live in a homophobic society, right? You guys know that homophobic violence still exists? How can you be sure that the motivations have anything to do with gender and not sexuality, considering how often those two things end up being linked?

As better women than me have pointed out, black transgender women in prostitution have the highest murder rate. That's a lot of overlapping risk factors. And in this statistic, a good number of these are people of colour, specifically black people.

Including killings of transgender men is really, really icky, considering how we already have an epidemic of violence against women. But it makes up the numbers. Because, for all the supposed compassion for trans people, this is more of a numbers game than anything else; a desperation to prove the unprovable. And even then, when you make the bar to entry this low, the numbers still aren't particularly powerful enough, so instead they're obfuscated with a really lazy 'highest recorded number of killings'.

A similar rhetorical tactic is used with 'In the UK transphobic hate crime has tripled in the last five years'. So, I couldn't find the source for this one, but you know what I did find?

MISOGYNY ISN'T EVEN CONSIDERED A HATE CRIME IN MY COUNTRY???????? Introducing Lumale, a new distinct gender identity

I have never really felt like "male" or "female" describe me. I can't explain why, but I have always felt like my gender is different: neither female nor male, but not a lack of gender.

"Maverique" is the closest specific existing term for how I feel; in essence, it's exactly what I described. Still, I have the same problem with it that I have with simply calling myself "non-binary" or "genderqueer," which is that the term feels like it doesn't "fit" with male and female.

This label is perfectly fine, of course! I just don't think it suits me. I want to feel like I am alongside male and female but like... different in the same way that male and female are different, I guess. Like different but only as different as they are from each other. I don't know.

So I have decided to create my own label, "Lumale," and I would like to share this label in case it helps anyone who feels similar to me.

I like to describe my gender as "yellow", where male is blue and female is red/pink. It has neither of those colors in it but it is still a color, just like Lumale has neither of those genders in it but still is a gender.

Lumale comes from the latin "lumen" meaning "light" and the "male" ending for "male" and "female." I think that it is fitting since yellow is associated with the sun and light.

Here is a list of gendered terms that could be used and the male/female/neutral equivalents:

Lumale: male/female (lumen + -male)

Luman: man/woman/human (lumen + -man)

Lume: boy/girl/kid (short for lumale/luman)

Milles (pronounced "mills"): Mister/Miss(es)/Mix

Mls.: Mr./M(r)s./Mx. (abbreviation of milles)

Ils (pronounced "ills"): sir/ma'am (short for milles)

Best Of 2023

Well, it’s that time, guys, gals, and non-binary pals — it’s the end of the year (well, it’s already the beginning of the new year now). My buddy Jake and I collaborated on a piece that talks about our favorites of the year, but I wanted to write a bit of a companion piece, in case you didn’t want to look at that, and just wanted to know what my favorites in order were, or if you wanted more detail on what I think of these albums. I won’t waste time, let’s dig into the honorable mentions first, and I’m only going to write maybe a sentence or two on these albums, since I don’t want this to be super long. The honorable mentions are in no particular order, either, I don’t rank those, but the top ten will obviously be just that — a top ten.

Spencer Sutherland - In His Mania

This is the newest album on the list, or at least newest that I found, and Spencer Sutherland is what I call a traditional and old fashioned pop artist with modern production, and that’s what his debut album sounds like. It’s incredibly catchy, fun, and grandiose, but also sounds timeless, and he has a killer voice.

Nita Strauss - The Call Of The Void

Guitarist Nita Strauss came out with her second album, and instead of it being purely instrumental, she included a lot of guests in terms of some of the biggest names in hard rock and metal, and this album kicks a lot of ass.

Thy Art Is Murder - Godlike

Controversy aside, the new album from Thy Art Is Murder is an album that sounds like the way I remember deathcore sounding. Not to sound like an old man, but these days, a lot of the genre is about how heavy and brutal you can get, whereas a lot of what I listened to back about 15 years ago is more about just having sick riffs, solos, and killer vocals. This record reminds me of that, and their new vocalist is pretty damn good.

Honey Revenge - Retrovision

This past year was a theme for catchy and fun albums that got my attention, and one of the first ones I found was Honey Revenge’s debut, Retrovision. These guys take 00s pop-rock and add their own flair to it. I really enjoy this album and I’m excited to see where they go from here.

Broadside - Hotel Bleu

Speaking of which, Broadside had a good year with their new album, and second album with Sharptone, but they took their sound into a mixture of pop-rock, 80s pop, and pop-punk. The album is pretty damn good, and has some of my favorite cuts of the year, but it does lose me a bit with how off the wall it can get. It doesn’t flow as well as it should, but the styles they utilize here are pretty good.

Blackbraid - Blackbraid II

I’ll be honest, folks — I haven’t gotten that metal for the majority of 2023. It’s not that it was bad, and like I said in my piece with Jake, I just didn’t find enough that I really connected with. There were a few exceptions, including Thy Art Is Murder’s latest, but Blackbraid’s second album, aptly titled Blackbraid II is a great mix of black metal, indigenous music, and even some hints of thrash and traditional heavy metal.

Wayfarer - American Gothic

My other favorite black metal album of this year is the new Wayfarer album, American Gothic, and if you wanted an album that takes country, Americana, and black metal, as well as lyricism about the Wild West and the realistic history of the time and region, you’ll love this.

Boys Like Girls - Sunday At Foxwoods

Boys Like Girls are back with their first album in 11 years, give or take, and it’s a good 80s-inspired album that has some slick hooks and reflects a lot more of lead vocalist and songwriter Martin Johnson’s project The Night Game. If you enjoyed that project, you’re sure to enjoy this one.

The Electric Mayhem - S/T

The Muppets had a pretty good year in 2023, especially with The Muppets Mayhem on Disney+, but the band released their debut “album” injunction with the show, and it’s a good little covers album (with a few originals in the mix) performed by the Electric Mayhem, and what’s great about this album is that it feels as though it’s performed by the actual band and not the performers of the characters along with session musicians. This album is just a bunch of fun all around.

Aesop Rock - Integrated Tech Solutions

I hadn’t listened to hip-hop much of 2023, but if there’s one album that I wanted to hear, it’s Aesop Rock’s Integrated Tech Solutions. This is a record that shows that Aes has nothing left to prove, as he’s got a relaxed and melodic flow, lyrics that are both insightful and observational, and a concept that doesn’t make much sense on the surface, but if you dig into it, the concept works a lot better.

Spiritbox - The Fear Of Fear

Spiritbox are back after two years, at least if you don’t count their Rotoscope EP from last year, but they put out a new EP entitled The Fear Of Fear. It’s a great EP that takes elements of their previous projects and combines it all together to make for a relatively short but engaging experience that is sure to leave fans wanting more.

Archetypes Collide - S/T

Archetypes Collide is a metalcore band that has a lot in common with bands like Linkin Park, Bring Me The Horizon, and other metalcore / alt-metal bands, especially ones with a pop sensibility like, because they have elements from a lot of different styles and put it all into a blender. This record is a ton of fun, despite not having much of a unique identity. If anything, hopefully their next album throws some more unique ideas into the mix.

Wind Walkers - What If I Break?

Wind Walkers is a band that Jake showed me, actually, and these guys follow in the same footsteps, although their new album (and first in five years) What If I Break is a generic record that does what it does well, and that’s kind of about it, although it does sound really nice and fans of this style should enjoy this quite a bit.

Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific

Cannibal Corpse released a new album this year, and it was a hell of a good time. Chaos Horrific is the name of it, and this record is more or less what we’ve gotten before, but this record has a lot of passion, fury, and fire in it that I can’t help but enjoy quite a lot. Cannibal Corpse is one of the first metal bands I ever got into, and it feels fitting to put it onto my list, even if it’s the honorable mentions.

Caskets - Reflections

The last honorable mention I’ve got is from another band in the post-hardcore vein that has a pop sensibility, and their second album, Reflections, sort of dials down on the R&B elements of their sound, but the pop elements are still there in full force and they rule.

That’s all the honorable mentions I got, so let’s get into the meat of the list. I don’t want to go into too much detail, because I already did in Jake and I’s piece, but I still wanted to talk about these albums in one way or another.

10: Tyler Childers - Rustin’ In The Rain

Country has a bit of theme on my list this year, and the first album on my list is Tyler Childers’ Rustin’ In The Rain. This record is a nice nostalgic-sounding album that reminds me of a lot of the 1950s and the 1960s. Childers himself even said that this album was his idea of him auditioning for Elvis Presley, and it works quite well. I came back to this record quite a lot, because of how catchy and nostalgic it was.

9: Paramore - This Is Why

Paramore came back after a six-year hiatus, and they changed their style yet again by turning into a post-punk band and it sounds great. A few songs don’t do as much for me compared to the rest, hence why it’s lower, but the stuff that’s great is truly fantastic. If there’s one band that can pull off reinvention, it’s Paramore.

8: The Maine - S/T

The Maine dropping a really solid album wasn’t on my bingo card in 2023, but here we are. Their self-titled album from last year was a slick and catchy slice of 80s pop-rock that worked wonders for me. This record is my favorite of the bunch with this similar sound, including the new Honey Revenge, Broadside, and Boys Like Girls albums.

7: Seth MacFarlane & Liz Gillies - We Wish You The Merriest

A Christmas album in my top ten of the year? Say it isn’t so, but indeed, it is. I really enjoyed this record when it dropped in November, but I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit the last couple months. I’ve been playing a bit of Christmas music, and this is the album on the rotation. I wrote a full length review of this, so if you want to see what I thought of that album in more detail, check that out, but I do really enjoy this album, nonetheless.

6: Colter Wall - Little Songs

One of my other favorite country albums this year was the new Colter Wall record, Little Songs. Another nostalgic sounding album, this one worked more so for me, because of its lyrical content and Wall’s deep baritone. I absolutely love the sound of his voice, and how unique it is, but this record feels like it came right out of 1955 in all the best ways.

5: Beartooth - The Surface

Alright, top five time, and in that spot is Beartooth’s The Surfqce. An album that is both heavy and optimistic, I love this album and how it came out. I’ve been a fan of Beartooth for the last few years, and their last couple of albums where they’ve gone into more hard rock and pop sensibilities have worked wonders for me. This record is no exception, as it’s heavy and catchy. Hardy makes an appearance, too, and for as much flack as his last album got from a lot of online critics (the album, The Mockingbird & The Crow, isn’t thaaaaaat bad, but it’s fine), he does great here. This record is a whole lot of fun, though, and I’ve been playing it quite a lot throughout the year.

4: Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - Weathervanes

Jason Isbell’s latest record is a behemoth of a record, as its lyricism is some of the best I’ve heard all year. Isbell’s vocals are the some of the best I’ve heard all year, too, but this record is some of the best Americana, country, and heartland-rock I’ve heard all year, too. This record gives every band member a chance to breathe, but every song is potentially the best song on the record. This album isn’t as higher, only because the top three on my list are more so personal for me, whereas this isn’t a personal one for me, although a lot of stuff on this record is very poignant and insightful. A lot of very relevant topics are brought up here, including addiction, abortion, school shootings, and racism, but it’s done so in an interesting way.

3: Zach Bryan - S/T

My top three this year were no contest. Zach Bryan’s self-titled is an album that caught me by surprise; this record is such a personal yet insightful look at someone’s mental and emotional state, but this record is wonderful. It’s a bit long, clocking in at around an hour, and a few songs feel like filler, but for the most part, this record is gorgeous. Bryan’s voice is utterly fantastic, and his lyricism is unmatched. These songs are some of the best of his career, too, and I’m so glad that a few of these songs were hits, even if they ended up being minor hits.

2: Metallica - 72 Seasons

For my top two albums of the year, these are albums that mean a lot to me, because of the bands that put them out and what they represent. The first one is Metallica’s new album, and their first in seven years, 72 Seasons, but this record is important to me because Metallica is the first metal band I ever got into a decade ago this year. I’ve been able to experience two Metallica albums live since they came out, this being one of them, and I’m also a lot older now. This is a great example of album where the band can do whatever they want, and they really do that by taking on multiple styles in this record. Metallica is the biggest metal band, if not the biggest band period, in the world, so they can truly do whatever they want.

1: Fall Out Boy - So Much (For) Stardust

This was a no-brainer — my album of the year is Fall Out Boy’s latest. They’re not only my favorite band, but they really hold a special place in my heart. This record is a long time coming, too; this is their first album in five years, and they went back to basics with So Much (For) Stardust, ultimately looking back to the past but also thinking forward. I don’t want to talk about this record too much, as I wrote extensively about it when it came out, and since then, but this record is a monumental one. It’s good to have Fall Out Boy back, especially with this new album.
