to start off, to say i’m massively grateful would be an understatement. i honestly didn’t expect to start writing again after quitting like 5 years ago 💀 and just decided to write for boynextdoor on a whim bc they haven’t debuted yet and would probably need some writers on the blr 😎

i was really excited to try out writing again having been a ghost reader for so long HELP (i’m not proud) and fate just led me back to my ult seventeen!

when i wrote, i just wanted to get my work out there and published on the cloud, and the reception and friends i made along the way were certainly not on my bingo card but a welcome surprise nonetheless. i’m really, really grateful that people like reading my work and i’m sorry that i can’t push out fics regularly! i write on random spurts of inspiration and i have so many wips rn PLS i’ll do my best to publish them all soon!!!

you stare mindlessly at the script presented to you, reading every line like you’re going through a short poem. within a blink of an eye, you set the piece of paper down and stretch your body to relax the tense muscles. without knowing, a tall figure looms in from behind you. with a hearty chuckle and a firm hand placed on your shoulder, you could already guess who the mysterious person is — kaeya.

“how are you doing today, sweetheart?” he winks at you and you shrug him off, giving him a short side glance before stepping away from him. “fine.” oh to give you a short background info, this man is kaeya alberich, your co-worker for this movie. he plays a major role in this movie and his fans adore him from worldwide.

though they were especially hyped when he got to film this project with you. you’re a fresh actor who’s never gotten into a film this big. it’s not that bad right?..wrong, fans suspect that you two are involved in a romantic relationship because of the way he treats you, and the last thing you could do is avoid the said man because you don’t want to risk your career being demolished by his angry mob of fans. despite this, it gave the people some sort of excitement on how you two would work together.

“oh what’s with the cold face? i didn’t do anything wrong did i?” he walks from behind you and you shake your head ‘no’. well, it’s no use dwelling on this matter at this point in time. it has been done and you just have to be on friendly terms with the said man. he decides to probe into your mind and figure out more about you, so he catches up to you in no time and places a hand on your shoulder once again.

“come now i–” a light smack erupted from your hand to his. with a heavy sigh, you turn to him. “i don’t understand kaeya. why me? why pester me out of all the people you could encounter out there?” your fierce gaze doesn’t break and all he could do was simply chuckle and take your hand in his. “is it enough to say that i’m interested in you?” he hums and observes the flabbergasted expression adorned on your face. “are you crazy?! surely you’ve heard the rumors about us, right?” you hiss quietly, making sure that this conversation is stuck between the two of you.

his eyes dart elsewhere, then back to you. “what about it?” he asks nonchalantly. before you could even speak again, he fake gasps. “ohh, don’t tell me you’re bothered because of the rumors,” his eyes light up like a light bulb and you grumble. “y/n, listen. if i like someone, my fans will adore them in return. if i hate someone, they’ll hate them. you, in fact, are that special someone and i like you. so don’t worry about anything.” he assures you before fixing his clothes and brushing off the wrinkles on his top.

“i–” you began, but he cuts you off quickly by pointing his index finger to the arranged set. “hush now, we have a movie to finish.”

“hmm, no, this won’t do.” the director cuts the scene and ponders intensely while looking at the script. while they were busy with that, you look at kaeya before turning back to stare at the wall — and for some reason, he caught you staring. “you okay there?” he asks teasingly, folding his arms against his chest. “yes, thank you for asking.” you bring back that tone that he oh-so loved about you. he decides to rile you up even more. his eyes flicker to the corner of the room, hmm?, maybe you’ll even receive a bonus because of this.

he treads his way in front of you, confident and superior, that’s the aura that he gives off right now. “i’m starting to think you’re no good at this,” he says, index placed on his lips while relishing the annoyed expression plastered on your face. it even seemed like you would smack him right there and then for saying such an insult to your career. “excuse me? i know full well what i’m doing.” you send him a glare and he puts his hands up, jokingly. “oh no, i’m scared.” his lips form into a moue, mocking and sarcastic, his tone laced with distaste.

is this how he’s going to play now? bring it on then.

“listen, i don’t like playing games here kaeya, so hurry up and say it. say what you don’t like about me.” you push a finger to his chest and push him harshly. “go on. spit,” a harsh force hits his chest. “it,” and another one. “out.” the back of his knees hits the flat of the chair and he flops hard on the wooden material. then, your shoe lands on his chest, not too heavy but not too light either. your hands that were previously gripping the frame of the chair is now holding kaeya’s tie. pulling it against you and scowling at him in disgust as if he was some sort of trash.

“i’ve wanted to say this for so long but gosh, you’re so. fucking. annoying, alberich.” oh wow. is this even the y/n that he knows? i mean he’s not complaining but this entire scene is so hot. “oh– ah, can i take a break? wOAH—!” you kick the chair without warning and he falls down roughly, landing on his bottom afterwards. hmph, serves you right. you frown at the pitiful sight of him rubbing his hips.

just then, you could hear cheers erupting from the crew. they looked... satisfied? what’s happening? “cut! that was perfect, are you sure you’re a rookie, y/n?” the director smiles and wonders in curiosity. “huh? oh– yes!” you’re confused and overwhelmed, this all feels so new to you. it’s like the feeling you got when you first started acting.

“haaaa.. i knew you were good but i didn’t think you’d go that harsh on me.” kaeya sighs heavily before standing up on his two feet, shifting his position to look at you straight in the eye. “what? are you saying this is all a—”

“an act, yes. the cameras started rolling long before you could even notice.” he chuckles and points back to the cameras all around you. oh, an act? an act?! you spewed out all your pent-up anger from earlier and now you’re embarrassed. world, please bury me.

“haha, don’t worry. the things you did earlier were just the type of stuff i was looking for! great job. and besides,” his lips stay on the shell of your ear and he whispers. “i now know that i have to work hard for your heart to accept me.”

How was the HM movie?? You were SOOO excited about it, and I know what a huge fan of the ride/lore you are. Did it meet your expectations? Was there anything you were especially surprised, delighted, or disappointed by?

IT WAS SO GOOD OH MY GOD

I went into it KNOWING my expectations were set too high, knowing that I was getting myself too excited for this movie, and it still completely fulfilled what I wanted. It was amazing.

It was just a fantastic amount of scary, enough that it’s still spooky while not being so much that my chicken ass can’t handle it. The main characters were all so silly I loved them so much (Harriet and Bruce my beloved), and it was really funny too without having the comedy overthrow the emotion and the spooky-ness. I loved the way it handled grief and loss, of course that’s something to be expected from a movie about death and the afterlife, but they did it so well here I teared up a few times.

I don’t know much about Haunted Mansion lore other than going on the ride a few times five years ago, but the references that I did get were SO fun. I got so excited whenever they played Grim Grinning Ghosts, and they had the exact view of the ballroom, and Constance Hatchaway my beloved got her own part, and the mariner, and the hitchhiking ghosts and the way they were followed home, and the Doom Buggy chair, and the incantation starting with ‘when hinges creak in doorless chambers and whenever candlelight flickers where the air is deathly still’, and the clock only having the number 13 and going crazy, and the silly engravings on the headstones, and the WALLPAPER, and AAAA THE STRETCHING ROOM WITH THE PAINTINGS WITH NO WINDOWS AND NO DOORS EEEEEE

The only reference that I was looking for that I don’t think I saw was the singing busts, I expected them to be more prevalent (if there at all???), I missed them :(. And I wished they’d actually sung the lyrics for Grim Grinning Ghosts more at the end, but honestly those are my only two things I wished they’d done different and they’re really minor things.

The cgi wasn’t too bad either, and I felt like some of the clunkiness was on purpose?? Especially when it came to the way the Hatbox ghost moved and spoke, it felt less like odd cgi and voice altering and more like they were trying to mimic the animatronics + special mirror effects + Ghost Host voice of the ride. Maybe I’m reading into it too much and maybe it was just a little odd special effects but to me it felt like it was on purpose. I also loved the animated sequence when they talked about Crump’s backstory. That was so fun.

ANYWAY YEAH I LOVED IT IVE GONE TO SEE IT TWICE NOW ITS SO FUN

And I’m telling you right now—if you find it, you’re gonna wish you hadn’t.” How quaint it was for Izuku to realize only after he arrived: he should have listened to Katsuki.

anyways!! the author has done it again. reccing this because it only has one chapter at the moment, and i'm sure from the author's note that the author has absolutely incredible plans for this, so go give a kudos and comment, maybe even consider subscribing to this one if it's your jam? regardless, etherealbeing has a ton of other bkdk stuff, as well as non mha stuff!

things i loved: the STEPS. OH MY GOD THE STEPS. AAAAAA. definitely some incredible worldbuilding down the road (ha), just know that it's a bit uncanny valley. i usually can't do uncanny valley, but even though i know what this author is capable of i was pulled in by the summary alone. and then i started reading and ooooo boy, izuku WHYYYYYY would you do the things you did!

i'm having so much fun that by the time i got to izuku actually investigating cantor's road i was HOOKED. i said, okay, well surely the uncanny valley stuff won't be too too bad... and then i was back to screaming at izuku like he was in a horror movie. the author does some really great stuff with the actual cantor's road and how it works with the levels of danger and all that. and i always do love to see that kind of american gothic(?) trope of 'listen when people tell you to not go to the spooky place. it's not spooky, it's terrifying'. and AAAA THE RED PAINT THING!!! you'll see what i mean when you get there, it was actually kinda cute if it was done by who i think it was done by :)) but also really unnerving until i finished what there is and had that mental light bulb go off lmaooo.

SUPER excited to see where this goes!! the author even has a video of cantor's road linked in the author's notes for that sweet, delicious immersion.

4. who was your first favorite character when you initially got into your f/o’s source content? was it your f/o from the very beginning?

Soooooo the first episode with Yuugi vs Kaiba struck me as cool, but I didn't get genuinely invested in the show until a little bit further into Duelist Kingdom; I think episode 3 or 4. my FIRST favorite character was Joey Wheeler (i.e., the 4kids version of Jonouchi Katsuya). The way he went ALL IN on his friendship with Yugi was what really sold the show for me—a friend who will dive off a moving cruise ship into the open ocean at night just to try and save some trading cards for you is just absolute Friendship Goals. I guess I was always kind of weird in that basically as soon as I started to really enjoy the show, I started projecting an early prototype of my s/i Naomi into Yugi's role (really it was more like just trying to imagine that I Was Actually Yugi back then) as part of how I enjoyed the show.... Even then, though, I don't think Joey really quite made it to f/o territory. He was more of an imaginary friend, if the difference makes any sense? he "existed" for me only to recite his lines from the show while I pretended I was Yugi. He didn't really become the platonic f/o he is for me today until much, much later, and he sort of slowly came into the picture over time through his association with Seto—despite and partially because of their animosity—and with Yuugi, who had become a sort of little brother to me.

6. if your f/o is from a series, which episode/movie/game/book of their source content is your favorite?

Oh my gods. There are so many!!!! AAAAAAAAA Well. Off the absolute top of my head, the current best contender for the #1 favorite episode (well, duel) is probably the rooftop duel between Yuugi and Kaiba, and guess why. :P

7. are there any specific scenes/chapters/moments of your f/o that you find yourself going back to revisit more often than any other?

Oh hey question 6 is back but now I get to list all the specific moments. XD Sweet heavens, there are so many. Not every moment I spend too much time thinking about is a Seto moment, but for him specifically? When he's trying to help Yuugi beat an impostor using Seto's deck and thinks Yuugi will lose and panics for just a second. During the rooftop duel when he's so sure that losing will mean nobody can rescue Mokuba and he has a literal breakdown because he loves his brother so much and is so terrified of failing him. When he's so disturbed by the idea of Pegasus directing Mokuba's hollow shell like a puppet in order to duel that he agrees to duel on Pegasus's terms rather than his own. When he loses to Pegasus, but plays to the last lifepoint knowing he's lost—and says an apology to Mokuba, believing both of their lives are effectively over. THEIR REUNION AFTER YUUGI BEATS PEGASUS. Him trying to play it cool around Ishizu after she shows him visions that had him on his hands and knees staring at a giant rock thirty seconds earlier. Literally every single moment he's hanging out with Yuugi & co in Battle City, especially his bits during the duel on the pier. His duel with Ishizu and the Rod reacting to him and him deciding to heed the warning and visions even though it's against his usual worldview. His late night studying Ra after realizing he can read friggin hieratic even though he'd never studied it. His hilarious reaction to Jounouchi using Blue-Eyes against him in their completely unnecessary duel for third place. The manga exit where he seems much more at peace with his losses to Yuugi/Atem than he was before their duel in Battle City. Even though I do not consider it canon—like almost every single Seto & Mokuba moment in Virtual World. Seto's reaction to Atem losing a duel. His entire duel with Amelda. The Atem & Seto vs Dartz duel, specifically when Seto loses that duel and ends up unconscious in Mokuba's arms. His incredibly nonchalant reaction to coming back after and still having more to do. Most, but not all, of his scenes during Memory World. The entire Ceremonial Duel and his reactions while actually there to watch, especially when Yuugi defeats Atem. Way too many scenes in DSoD lmfao

8. are there any scenes/chapters/moments your f/o is in that you skip when you revisit their source content?

Nope lol. Even his worse moments are still ones i love to rewatch.

15. do you own any merchandise from your f/o’s source content? what is it?

So one thing you'll find out after talking to me for a bit is that I grew up in a less-than-fantastic household where it was not safe to have strong interests. And, being autistic, I have always had very strong and specific interests—YGO being one of them. Unfortunately, if I was too obvious about how much a given interest meant to me, my manipulating bastard of a father would find a way to use that interest against me. So, I had very little merch related to Seto, or even to YGO as a franchise, until actually very recently. So, in spite of how long I've been involved with the source, I have very little in the way of merch. I have some very old cards from the TCG's earliest days, including Starter Deck Kaiba, Starter Deck Yugi, Starter Deck Joey, and Starter Deck Pegasus; of those, only a few of the cards are still in especially good condition (among them are the first Blue-Eyes and Dark Magician cards I ever got, both in lightly played condition despite having been played A LOT). Right now, I have the copy of Trap Hole from the original Starter Deck Kaiba within arm's reach. XD I have a locket designed to resemble those of the Kaiba brothers, and I have a single vinyl Pop figure each of Seto, Yugi, and Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Somewhere in the depths of my closet, I have one of the original toy Duel Disks, and I remember wearing it everywhere and using it to duel with. XD I also have a small calculator with the logo and Puzzle on the flip-over cover, and a pin from I think an early YCS that I was given by a long-lost friend many many years ago. omg hi!! first of all thank you so much for reading hehe i'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying it!! and aaaaaaa thank you for the questions omg this might get kinda long (edit from future lauren: yeah it did so im adding a read more lol) but im excited hehe

sooo to answer the first question of what inspired me hehe it was definitely a mix of a few things!! biggest inspiration was me reading mists of celeste and being like "what the fuck. can i do that?" bc ... im sure you've all read it and yk what i mean LMAO its just so good and i wanted to know if i could write something as impactful hehe i had already been a writer but i had never shared my writing or tried to write a longfic so it was a big challenge to start and im so happy i did!!

and soooo after i decided i wanted to write my own fic i figured some things out like i definitely wanted to do an au and i pretty quickly decided that i wanted hongjoong to be an antagonist so i started pondering what situations make Bad People into People Of Power and ... the cult idea plopped nicely into my brain and then everything started falling into place after that hehehe

and YES there are specific cults ALKJFKDJFDK the way im majorly freaking out getting to talk about this thank you again for asking omg anyways. scientologists (so sorry if any of you are scientologists but fr...) heaven's gate. branch davidians (mullet hj is canon in the answer for 1 reason and 1 reason only. david koresh’s mullet.) and like ofc the manson family and the people’s temple (though more so just jim jones himself idk that whole 900 people thing… not intimate enough for the vibe i was going for) and honestly the characterization of hongjoong is derivative of a few irl people too LKFJSDFKLJSD like im not gonna name names bc then yall would be like “oh god …” and judge yourselves so ill save you the torment lol but you could Probably Guess

fun and lighthearted. regular movie nights and watching new blockbuster films recommended to him by his friends in canada. filling the house with loud, bursting laughter unfailingly. reading together at night. recommending his favorite books to you and looking over your shoulder to see what part of the book you’re in. leaving you short and sweet poems before you leave for work or school. him jokingly serenading you with justin bieber songs, resulting in you shoving him away and him just following you, guitar in hand and ‘i’m off my face in love with you’ spilling out of his mouth in giggles. opening your eyes drowsily in the middle of the night and seeing him on his knees, hands clasped together, thanking God for you in his prayers.

extremely playful. making bets as a way to express your love for each other. not allowing the other to back out of a bet unless you give a huge smooch in exchange. whining, whining everywhere. clinging to each other whenever given the chance. lots of stolen glances on his part. scolding you in the kitchen when you mess up an instruction, and proceeding to tell you to wait in the living room as he turns the disaster into a feast. smugly bragging about his talent at dinner but also secretly waiting for your praise. soft looks and smiles whenever you roll your eyes at his antics. denying it whenever he’s called out by a member. on rare occasions when it’s quiet and peaceful, you’d exchange quiet ‘i love you’s and feather like touches.

JAEMIN ー 나재민.

the most domestic out of all the relationships in nct dream. doing chores together. sneaking in kisses during cleaning days. creating a shared account that you use for donations. couple photography daysーposting the photos on your social media account which is completely compromised of photos taken by each other. volunteer work as a couple. nuzzling your head in his chest as he edits photos on his computer. never feeling insecure because of his constant reassurance and constant compliments. him never failing to look after you; staying home when you’re sick, preparing a hot bath for you when you’re upset, moving you to the other side of the sidewalk. you don’t know this but he already has money saved for the future he imagined for the both of you.

CHENLE ー 천러.

lots of trips to a lot of different places. taking you to china to introduce you to his family. dancing with the older chinese neighbors in their local park. amusement park dates. trying out every ride and laughing it off when one of you throws up. brunches in expensive cafes. learning about new movies and the backgrounds of its actors. watching his old videos in vienna as he shyly laughs beside you, his hands covering his eyes. shopping dates. waiting for you to finish trying on all the clothes you liked in the changing room, and complimenting how you looked in each one. braiding your hair at home and laughing at how terrible he unintentionally made your hair look. showing off his basketball skills. quietly cooking dinner and smirking whenever he feels your eyes on him.

JISUNG ー 박지성.

trial and error-ing everything you do together. looking at each other in alarm when you burn something in the kitchen. hugging each other tightly on top of dining tables as a cockroach lurks somewhere in the house. walking around the city and stopping by ice cream stalls. blushing when the members catch you two together but waving them off with a groan—chucking pillows at them when they don’t leave. deep stares accompanied by shy chuckles. sheepish grins directed at you when you’re forced to wash both of your clothes once again. even more sheepish grins when he accidentally breaks the washing machine despite not touching it. watching movies and playing games with bowls of malatang steaming beside you. playing with each other’s fingers as you lie in bed side-by-side. teaching you how to dance and laughing at you when you fail to follow to choreography.
