There once lived a villainess who desired nothing more than to be wanted.

Her family, newcomers to the nobility, had ascended the social hierarchy due to their vital contributions to the kingdom. The baron, burdened by the weight of lineage, pined fervently for an heir, as the baroness had endured the heartache of multiple miscarriages, casting dark doubts upon her ability to provide a rightful successor to the barony.

In her heart, the villainess despised her ill-fated gender, for the world deemed her unworthy, and even her own mother rarely graced her presence, leaving her in the care of a faithful nanny.

But the villainess' destiny took a sinister turn when, at long last, the baroness bore a son. A grand celebration erupted throughout the barony, and slowly, the servants who had once watched over the young villainess began to shirk their duties, knowing the baroness's newfound obsession with her own offspring left no room in her heart for her daughter.

Now that the barony had secured its coveted heir, the young villainess was deemed nothing more than a pawn in the grand game of arranged marriages. It was hardly a shock when the baron agreed to a proposal from a prosperous merchant family, one that required no dowry for their daughter's hand in marriage.

The baroness recognized the potential of this union to solidify ties with the merchant family, and thus, at the tender age of fourteen, the young villainess was whisked away to the merchant family's opulent estate to meet her new family.

Life amidst the merchants was a vast improvement for the villainess. No longer was she subjected to neglect or mockery; the servants treated her with respect, and she embarked on a journey of education. Her heart was filled with a desire to repay her new family, particularly her fiancé, who had captured her affections. He was the first man to treat her as an equal, to make her heart dance with laughter, and to seek her companionship. She pledged her life to stand by his side.

The merchant family was locked in a fierce rivalry with another merchant clan, the Leeches, who hailed from the coastal regions. The eldest son of the merchant family, the villainess's betrothed, harboured an intense loathing for the Leech family, yearning to obliterate their family and monopolize the region.

With unwavering determination, the villainess sought to become an indispensable asset to her beloved, mastering the ways of a merchant and honing her intellectual prowess. Her aim was clear: sabotage the Leeches' endeavours, be ahead of their plans, and outwit them at every turn.

These actions did not go unnoticed by the second son of the Leech family, a man of keen intellect and a gift for persuasive speech. He was captivated by the villainess's cunning and sharp mind, and a rivalry was born. They vied to outsmart each other, exchanging backhanded compliments at public gatherings, while also skilfully anticipating and countering each other's moves.

However, the villainess's world crumbled when she discovered her beloved fiancé, the very man she had dedicated her life to was having an affair, and to a mere maid. Yet, her heart was not consumed by anger. She believed her inadequacy was the root of the problem, that she had not done enough to please him. Her efforts to ruin the Leech family became more direct, driven by the desire to earn her beloved's admiration.

Alas, the recognition she yearned for would never be hers. One momentous day, during a tea party she hosted to celebrate the success of her new business, an attempt was made on the life of the Leech family's heir, by a maid, the same one her fiancé was infatuated with, sought to poison him. Miraculously, the dosage of the poison was not lethal, but it left the heir bedridden for days.

The Leech family launched an intense investigation to unmask the culprit, and it did not take long for her lover to implore her to take the blame, to save his beloved.

Love, as it often does, clouded even the sharpest minds. The villainess, whose only desire was to please her beloved, agreed to shoulder the blame.

And so, she found herself imprisoned in a dark, desolate cell, wasting away the prime of her youth. But there was one person who would pay her a fateful visit, the man who had once been her rival.

"I didn't want you to end up like this," he began, shattering the eerie silence of the dungeon.

A faint smile graced her lips. "A place like this does not befit a gentleman like you," she replied.

He chuckled bitterly. "Please, my dear, you and I both know I am far from a gentleman."

She shook her head fondly, well aware of his misdeeds in the shadows. "Well, you always were a gentleman to me..."

The air grew thick with unsaid words, until he found the courage to break the silence once more. "Why did you take the blame?"

She sighed. "Whatever do you mean, Leech?""

He scoffed. "You had countless chances to harm my family before, and you never did. You always played fairly. If you had attempted such a thing, it wouldn't have been so sloppily done, and you certainly wouldn't be sitting here now." His intense gaze implored her to explain herself.

She cursed him in her mind for knowing her that well, but in the twisted life she's lived, maybe he was the only one who truly knew her.

"... Leech, you wouldn't know how it feels to be not wanted," she muttered, feeling tears well up in her eyes.

He stared at her in silence, unable to respond to the depths of her words.

"From one rival to another," she breathed, "may I ask for one last request?"

"Of course," he replied, his eyes cast down. "It would be cruel of me to deny my lady's request."

She huffed at his words. "I... I seem to have a craving for bitter almonds... They're my favourite snack, you see. Could you bring me some?"

She looked up to stare into his eyes, for perhaps the last time. His mismatched eyes were glossy, his eyebrows furrowed and it was the most emotion she had ever seen on his face.

"As you wish... I shall have them delivered before dawn," he replied hoarsely, his voice trembling as he turned to leave.

"Thank you... Jade."

The man froze in his steps, his heart heavy with the name you had never called, before resolutely walking away from the prison cell.

The next morning, the villainess was found to have passed away with a smile on her face, an empty box that still carried the faint scent of almonds cradled in her arms.

though Jade wasn't the main character, he and his twin brother grew largely popular for their interesting banter and chemistry with the main protagonist

the fans were particularly fascinated with his tragic love story, though they were only told bits and pieces of it, since the main plot was more focused on how the main protagonist would pull Jade out of his slump and get revenge for his love

we're told Jade fell in love with "a remarkable woman who was used as a mere pawn all her life"

the fanbase collectively agreed the villainess deserved a better ending, and more so for Jade who became so emotional for her despite always keeping up his appearances

the gap moe was just too strong to resist

and though you wished for him to get a better ending, you never imagined being the one to rewrite the ending, and especially not as the reincarnated villainess

by the time you entered the story, you had just gotten affianced to the scumbag of the merchant family

but even living in her birth family for a month was enough to make you realise how deep the villainess' trauma ran

even more so when you experienced the kind treatment in the merchant family, it was no wonder the villainess' detached mind threw away all reason to dedicate herself to her scumbag of a fiancé

perhaps she had never known companionship, but for you, the scumbag's attitude was an instant red flag

he would gift you cheap gifts he found on the street, constantly remind you what an honour it was to be his fiancée, but you suppose even these acts could warm the heart of a wounded child

you know that the Jade would eventually become your rival, and you would sacrifice yourself to protect the scumbag

buuut, you also know Jade fell in love with the villainess

so, if you were to side with Jade and help him put the merchants family under the Leech family's influence, there's a high likelihood he would spare you

and even if he doesn't fall in love with you, you would still be a skillful businesseswoman that could continue to work for the Leech family, or simply start your own business

basically just side with Jade and do not harm the Leech family!

only... the novel was far too vague about the "genius of the villainess", and you only know some of Jade's business plans

this means actually studying business and transforming yourself into a crafty businesswoman worthy of being the rival of Jade Leech (⁠ ⁠；⁠∀⁠；⁠)

but you can do it!! the villainess managed to, so why can't you?

and soon you started working on the field, actively working in information guilds and business ventures so you could make a name for yourself for him to notice you

and it didn't take long before you had your first encounter at a ball

A velvety voice spoke from behind you, "I don't believe I've made your acquaintance, my lady."

You turned gracefully, offering an elegant smile as you dipped into a curtsey. "Indeed, I don't believe I have. May I have your name, sir?"

He reciprocated with a courteous smile. "My name is Jade Leech, it's a pleasure to meet you,"

"Mr. Leech," you nodded with a hint of intrigue. "I'm—" Before you could complete your introduction, he interjected.

"My dear, I already know who you are," he said, something sinister twinkling in his hypnotic eyes. "Let's skip the pleasantries, shall we?" he suggested, and you noticed that the other guests had discreetly departed, leaving only the two of you.

"It seems my lady is quite bold, your business endeavours are rather... striking," he hummed.

A chuckle escaped your lips. "I shall take that as a compliment." Your veins tingled with anticipation, for the game had begun, and you had no intention of losing. "I'm rather impressed by your family's ventures as well,"

"Oh?" he arched an elegant eyebrow. "Do elaborate."

Game set.

"Your family operates with remarkable efficiency, I suppose any business would only aspire to such!" You said. "Hmm... It's a miracle how swiftly you've gained the support of so many reliable allies..."

You noticed a slight falter in his composure, surprised that you possessed information about the Leech family's coercive tactics, how they had either threatened or bribed indebted families into compliance.

Match.

You inched closer to him, standing on slight tiptoes to whisper into his ear. "I think we can agree we can both hurt each other, but I'd much rather think about what we could accomplish together..."

Stepping back with a smug grin, you took in his expression, adorably dazed. "Now, if you'll excuse me," you curtsied once more before turning to take your leave.

But if you had looked back, you would have seen Jade Leech with his hand concealing a sly smile, a faint blush tingeing his ears.

from that meeting, you've basically become business partners with Jade

though you do so secretly in guild meetings so the scumbag doesn't find out

you offer Jade with your family's business plans and the two of you come up with ideas to make it seem like the Leech family naturally outshone them

of course, Jade was rather suspicious of you at first, after all, why would you be working against your future in laws??

but you explained to him that, in reality, they never saw you as family

you were just a pawn in their eyes, and particularly because the marriage wasn't official yet, you were the best person to discard in order to affect the family

you could have been wrong, but it felt as if there was a bubbling anger deep within Jade's eyes as you explained your situation to him

but he very quickly switched back to his typical closed eye smile, eagerly talking about another plan to thwart your family's business

what also came as a surprise was that the poisoning incident failed

somehow, floyd's fiancé realised his tea was poisoned

still you can't deny the glee you felt when Jade assured you that he knew you didn't do it

but now, the Leech family is adamant to make the merchant family, and particularly the maid suffer

so Jade devises a plan to simultaneously protect you, and set up the downfall of the family

rumours started to spread of what cruel and immoral woman you were, scandalous bribes made with the city guards, indecent behaviour spent with your colleagues, all painting the picture of a wicked woman

the scumbag very quick to fall into the trap, started accusing you of having affairs and illicit trading

you denied these accusations, but your words did little to calm him

and all it took was a little alcohol (courtesy of Jade) to make him declare an annulment of your engagement at a party

maybe jade set up more rumour spreaders to make him more anxious, but you'll never know for sure

so as planned, you accept the annulment

but of course, you've been well-prepared to fight back against these baseless accusations, so one by one, you refute them with your business logs and witnesses to prove your innocence

your fiancé is speechless at the end of it, and the whispers of the crowd seem to show you've successfully declared your innocence

you quickly excuse yourself to a balcony to "regain your composure" and asked everyone to continue the festivities

but it wasn't long before a familiar face joined you

You didn't need to turn around to know who the footsteps were from. "Leech, the curtains are drawn. Shouldn't a gentleman such as yourself know the balcony is occupied?"

You turned to face him, finding his eyebrows furrowed in an amused manner. "My apologies. I assumed my lady might welcome some company," he replied playfully. "What's the matter my lady, you don't seem happy with the annulment at all."

A wistful smile graced your lips. "I am happy, of course, this is what we've worked towards..." You turned your gaze skyward, your eyes glistening. "It's just... I won't have anywhere to return to now,"

"Whatever do you mean?"

You scoffed. "Please, as if you didn't investigate my background before we even met," you retorted, turning to him with incredulity. "...you know I have no place in that house," you murmured quietly into the night.

"My pearl," he reached to cup your cheek, directing your gaze towards him. "How would you find a place next to me?"

His suggestion left you wide-eyed. "But the dowry-"

"You know I have no need of that," he smiled. "In fact, I think I should prepare a gift for my in-laws,"

"I wouldn't want them benefiting from you-"

"Now, now my dear," he tenderly brushed away the stray tear that fell, "when have you ever know me to be so kind? I would of course make them... suffer, a little," he added with a mischievous grin.

You couldn't help but burst into laughter at his proposal. "Hahaha! I like the way you think, Leech,"

"Is that a yes, then?" he asked, his eyes tenderly focused on you.

You leaned up to him, pressing your lips to his. He initially froze at the contact, but then melted into your embrace.

"It's a yes, Jade."

within days, you had moved into the Leech estate, and the family very fervently welcomed you

floyd has mentioned several times how this was Jade's dream come true and how he's glad he doesn't have to spend hours moping in the library about not seeing you anymore

and as expected, the merchant family soon found itself crumbling into a financial crisis now that you left them

the leech family graciously saved the family from bankruptcy, leaving them in debt of them

and Jade scoured/fabricated enough evidence from the silver hairpin and the teacup to apprehend the maid, leaving the scumbag alone and heartbroken

and though your blood family received a large sum from the Leech family, started facing financial difficulties left and right due to unsuccessful investments

it seems your new fiancé isn't very forgiving towards anyone who wrongs you

but then again, you wouldn't forgive anyone for crossing your eel either

What's your favorite banned episode of Star Trek?

Though 12 episodes of Star Trek have been banned in various forms in various countries across its many series, the three “lost” episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation are perhaps the most famous, and which is my own favorite will come as no surprise to anyone who knows me.

The first is of course the original pilot episode, the single episode version of “Encounter at Farpoint.” Though the plot is mostly the same as what aired, two scenes that resolved the story early were deemed too violent, those involving Captain Picard executing an officer for abandoning his post, and Riker pushing Wesley Crusher out an airlock for discovering his affair with Tasha Yar. Needless to say with original showrunner George R.R. Martin being replaced by Gene Roddenberry, Wesley stayed on the ship and the series was richer for it. Martin would of course go on to use both scenes in his magnum opus, “Sandkings.”

The second banned episode is the usual fan favorite. The famous “Holoday Special” in which the ship’s entertainment system malfunctions and releases a Lovecraftian amalgamation of popular Christmas mascots into the ship was not only the first appearance of future show staple Ensign Scrooge, but the creature itself- Part Santa, part Frosty, part Reindeer and part Krampus. It was deemed too scary and cut, though its puppet was repurposed for the alien at the end of the episode “Conspiracy.”

But my favorite is naturally the crossover with the Alien franchise. From the moment the Enterprise entered orbit of LV-426, you knew some shit was gonna go down. With Data’s betrayal of the crew for Starfleet’s “profit directive” to Picard’s attempts to coax a solution out of the computer, Pulaski turning hero and willing to ignite the warp core to kill the monster, and of course the infamous Worfburster scene, the whole episode was a tour de force that they had to know would never be shown given its darkness and gore.

Thank goodness we still got Sisko vs Predator.

Happy birthday, Karl Marx! (May 5, 1818)

One of the most significant philosophers of all time, Karl Marx is considered the founder of modern sociology, and his ideas comprise the foundation of the modern socialist movement, with his body of work laying the foundations for the Marxist school of philosophy and economics. Born in Trier, Germany, Marx became the subject of observation by German authorities due to his political activities from a young age. Gravitating towards left-wing politics and philosophy, and formed a close friendship and partnership with fellow German socialist Friedrich Engels, who would support and collaborate with Marx on some of his most important works, including the Communist Manifesto and The German Ideology. Marx's works and activities resulted in him becoming stateless, and he moved around Europe while continuing to write and involve himself in socialist organizing. Marx's magnum opus was Capital, a comprehensive critique of political economy intended to be published in three volumes. However, Marx died in 1883 before it could be finished, with only the first volume published within his lifetime; Engels prepared the remaining volumes based on Marx's notes. Marx's contributions to philosophy, sociology, and economics are incalculable, and continue to influence socialists and philosophers today. Marxist theory comprises a distinct philosophical school of its own, and later theorists, including Lenin, Mao, De Leon, and Luxemburg, have continued to develop and adapt Marxist thought.

Here are two of the most hilariously scalding letters from the 1800s that I have ever read. One is by the famous writer Lord Byron, and the other is by his daughter Ada Lovelace, the famous mathematician. Both are written to their respective business partners: Byron to his publisher John Murray, and Lovelace to her colleague Charles Babbage. It’s interesting to note how strikingly similar these letters are despite the fact that Ada and her father never knew each other, as her parents separated shortly after her birth and he died abroad when she was eight. Both were rebellious, fond of gambling, prone to tumultuous affairs, and both hated Lady Byron. These similarities may help to explain why her final wish was to be buried next to him instead of her family.

Lord Byron in a Letter to his publisher John Murray about the printing of his magnum opus, the poem Don Juan:

“Ra. August 31st. 1821.

Dear Sir

I have received the Juans – which are printed so carelessly especially the 5th. Canto – as to be disgraceful to me — & not creditable to you.

It really must be gone over again with the Manuscript – the errors are so gross – words added – changed – so as to make cacophony & nonsense. — You have been careless of this poem because some of your Synod don’t approve of it – but I tell you – it will be long before you see any thing half so good as poetry or writing. — Upon what principle have you omitted the note on Bacon & Voltaire? and one of the concluding stanzas sent as an addition? because it ended I suppose – with –

‘And do not link two virtuous souls for life Into that moral Centaur man & wife?’

Now I must say once for all – that I will not permit any human being to take such liberties with my writings – because I am absent. —

I desire the omissions to be replaced (except the stanza on Semiramis) particularly the stanza upon the Turkish marriages – and I request that the whole be carefully gone over with the M.S.S. –

the sounds of tidy shoes and glamorous heels click on the marble surface of the arthouse. it was a beautiful and extravagant affair, which ozzie had wanted purposefully. what better place to show off the carnal art than one of the most prestigious art houses in new york city? with some family connections, he was able to post his lewd art on the walls for everyone to see. whips, chains, gags, collars—you name it. it's the life that he's lived for a little over a year now. all of it culminating into beautiful art of his pet.

in the center of the entire exhibit was the reason this was an 18+ art show. a bed, setup with a camera facing it, roped off with red velvet rope. a chest lay beside the bed, no doubt holding all the toys and things that the two always used. his magnum opus. the true acceptance of this new lifestyle: a live show. not just the ones for their adoring fans, but one for many onlookers and those within the higher societies. they would watch as ozzie displayed his and alessia's love as art. which it was.

behind some of the art walls, back where only the staff could go, he adjusts alessia's collar and leash. "you look so good, baby." he kisses her head. it's obvious he's nervous. they've fucked on camera millions of times, but never for his art. "so the plan is simple... i walk you around the house, showing you off to everyone, greeting them with my pet... with you on all fours... then, once it hits about ten, we go to our bed and give everyone a show." he kisses her, passionately, as if he needs it for luck. Il faut faire attention aux détails. Ils sèment notre vie de petits cailloux et nous guident.

Les gens brutaux, les gens pressés, ceux qui portent des gants de boxe ou font gicler le gravier, ignorent les détails.

Ils veulent du lourd, de l’imposant, du clinquant, ils ne veulent pas perdre une minute à se baisser pour un sou, une paille, la main d’un homme tremblant.

Mais si on se penche, si on arrête le temps, on découvre des diamants dans une main tendue…

Et la vie n’est plus jamais triste. Ni le samedi, ni le dimanche, ni le lundi…

Mon AVIS, humblement !

Belles tranches de vies que nous livre ici, en grand chef, Katherine Pancol, tartinées tantôt de miel, tantôt de pâte à tartiner bon marché, mais toujours accompagnées de son fameux tea time dont elle seule à le secret.

On lui pardonnera sans problème cette éternelle histoire d'amour manquée entre Philippe et Joséphine (mais où va-t-elle chercher les prénoms de ses héroïnes ??), mais on l'attend au détour des traits de cet étonnant Junior, surdoué improbable qui casse quelque peu la véracité des propos.

Bien moins malin celui qui trouvera dans ces pages le fil rouge qui a fait le succès de l'opus précédent (La Valse lente des tortues)... on le cherche mais on ne le trouve point, perdu qu'il est peut-être entre les tourments de cette croqueuse d'Hortence (décidément, les prénoms sont un mystère pour Madame Pancol... ) et les pérégrinations de cette bonne vieille Henriette.

Toujours est-il qu'une unité de ton se propage dans les méandres de cette saga familiale à l'américaine, digne des meilleurs Dallas, un questionnement uniforme sur le rapport étroit entre hommes, à l'image du Petit Jeune Homme, vers de terre amoureux d'une étoile filante, de Gary poursuivant un père fantoche ou de Junior devenant un homme au contact du paternel.

Pancol nous en met plein la vue cette fois, en nous faisant entrer dans de nombreux mondes qui nous sont contemporains : celui des affaires internationales, évocant cette "crise financière" si proche de nous ; celui du "gratin" parisien, celui de l'écriture et de sa longue introspection ; une belle galerie de personnages, connus ou nouveaux, nous est alors donnée en pâture, donnant au livre un beau relief qui explique ses presque 1000 pages. Le lecteur en a pour son argent, il est content, content également de refermer ce troisième opus, dernier d'une longue saga qui menace de tourner en rond s'il propose un quatrième volet.

Bref, un écrin brillant et divertissant comme on les aime aujourd'hui, même s'il souffre de quelques incongruités.

Dear listener, if you want music, you can find that practically anywhere online. If you want a journey, try Colourmusic on for size. I promoted this group rather hard on my blog in 2022 because the initial reaction I got from posting their tunes wasn’t insignificant. I got hundreds of hits from Tumblrites just for posting their rare work, and I even had a synesthete on this platform tell me that one tune by them ‘tastes like citrus’. I spent so much time in 2022 firing arcs of fanboy spooge all over my hapless audience I swore I wouldn’t dare bring another post involving this group to Tumblr for a full year. Well, it’s been over a year and my desire to post more music by them has reached a fever pitch. If you’re looking for a far more in-depth view on this group, I have covered their tunes numerous times before. But for those looking for an abbreviated description of what this band brings to the table; all you need to know is that they’re a high concept indie rock group whose modus operandi is to incite the feeling, the sensation of a particular color. For each album, they invoke a new color. They started in 2008 with an orange album (F, Monday, Orange, February, Venus, Lunatic, 1 or 13) that was enthusiastic and energetic. Their second album and magnum opus, 2011's My _____ is Pink, was passionate and playful. They followed it up with a purple album (May You Marry Rich) that is appropriately lush and ambitious, and a blue album that very heavily took its inspiration from the actual element of water. If I’m being perfectly honest, I’m a much larger fan of their pre-2015 work. I’m not even 100% sure if they’re trying to make music based on colors anymore. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to their post-2015 work in the last month and found their 2018 album Swimsuit to be tonally solid, but it was also a very personal and bleak affair that I didn’t necessarily immediately want to revisit for multifarious reasons. I found a decent portion of their ambient and at times upbeat 2021 album Thank Goodness Hell Is Easy To Get Into was a breath of fresh air… although they took a pretty hard nose-dive into stoner rock territory, and stoner rock just ain’t my cup of tea, folks. But not all is lost in their direction, as their most recent works still did their very best to tell a story complete with a rising action, a falling action, and a denouement. If you smash play on the video above, you will be introduced to the very first Colourmusic video I came across in about 2009 or so. These guys made some great and very underrated music videos just over a decade ago and before you say anything, you’re welcome, Tumblr. You’ll feel a smile stretching across your face as you realize *I too am a member of this captive audience*. It’s Tog from their pink album. Enjoy!

In re4 it says in the intro:

Specifically want to focus on "protecting the new president's family"

In the OG it's his first time meeting ashley, but would this presumably have meant he was planned to be on the president's secret service? We never really see this in any of the other material following RE4 (I think???), so I'm not sure if he ever follows through with this.

We also don't see it in the remake! So would you say this was retconned, or did I maybe misinterpret this?

Leon also says in the intro of OG:

"Soon after [the incident at the Spencer Mansion (aka the events of RE1)], the news was out to the whole world revealing that it was the fault of a secret viral experiment conducted by the international pharmaceutical enterprise, Umbrella. [...] With the whole affair gone public, the United States government issued an indefinite suspension of business decree to Umbrella."

and yet in RE6 the entire inciting incident that kicks off Leon's campaign is that the president is going to "reveal the truth about what happened in Raccoon City"????

Like???

Literally what is still being kept secret, exactly??

And it bothered me for the longest fucking time until RE4make was announced to be in development and someone went and interviewed Shinji Mikami regarding his thoughts on it, and Mikami's response was (paraphrased) "I support any attempt at a remake as long as they fix the story and give it a better one. We wrote literally the entire story of RE4 in two weeks because we'd spent so much time perfecting the gameplay that we legit forgot to write a story."

And then all the pieces clicked together and it finally started to make sense.

So we really gotta keep in mind what RE4 OG actually was at the time of release. Prior to RE4, the last two major RE releases were REmake and RE0, both of which completely and utterly fucking bombed. Mikami, to this day, considers REmake his magnum opus, and for it to sell like complete and utter dogshit to the point where it almost legit ended his career was literally traumatic for him. In 2013-2014 leading up to the launch of The Evil Within, he would say in interviews that he still had nightmares about how badly REmake performed after he'd poured so much into it.

In those same interviews, he also talked about how RE4 was a make or break moment not just for his career, but for the entire RE franchise. If RE4 underperformed, not only would he get fired from Capcom, but they were going to pull the plug on Resident Evil all together. This is a huge reason why RE4 took so long to come out compared to previous RE titles and why two different completely viable builds for RE4 got scrapped (one became Haunting Ground and one became Devil May Cry) before they settled on the version of the game that was actually released.

It's also why they fixated so hard on the gameplay and let the story go by the wayside.

So, Leon's voiceover in the original RE4 literally only exists for two reasons:

to get players who have never played an RE game before relatively up to speed with what's happened in the story up to this point

to give some explanation to existing fans why Leon is in Spain looking for the game's escort mission when, the last time we heard about him, he was just... nebulously with the government and was working as a point of contact between Claire and Chris in CVX.

Basically, neither Mikami nor Capcom had a plan for Leon's character at the time RE4 was being made. It had already been established in the RE3 epilogues that Leon and Sherry had been kidnapped by the US Government and that the gov't was holding Sherry hostage and forcing Leon to work for them, but... that was about it. That was the only sort of baseline that Mikami and his team were working off of, so they basically were making it up as they went along and taking whatever liberties with his character and the base lore that they needed to in order to make the game coherent and successful.

We also need to keep in mind that Mikami left Capcom in the time between RE4's Gamecube release and its PS2 release (and that's a whole fucking drama all on its own), so he was not at all involved in the writing or creation of Separate Ways.

So, the father of the entire Resident Evil franchise, who developed the whole fucking idea himself, and who created and directed RE4's base game fucking dipped out right after release, leaving absolutely no notes behind because Capcom fucked him over, which left the PS2 team to just kind of fucking... figure it out on their own during the creation of Separate Ways, because Sony wanted exclusive content for their version of the game. So now, in addition to Mikami taking liberties with Leon's character for the creation of the base game, the B-team now had to take even more liberties because they didn't know what the fuck to even do.

Like.

Degeneration is a bad fucking movie and it's a huge shitshow, but I do not at ALL fault or envy the writers or directors of that movie, because I wouldn't even know where to START when it came to working off of the spaghetti plot that RE4 just kind of threw at the wall and hoped stuck.

And there's more I can go into about Degeneration, too, and why that's such a shitshow and how half of it doesn't make sense, but. That's for another post.

So, all of this to say... don't take Leon's voiceover in the intro to RE4 OG too seriously. It was literally just a way for Mikami and his team to really quickly just be like "okay, so, there were zombies and shit in the previous games, but now that's over and Leon's a government agent, and he's going after the president's kidnapped daughter. everyone follow me??? yes??? ok good let's start the game." because the story was a rush job, and the game was developed under extreme duress, and all that mattered was that it made enough sense to not put people off.

Like... does it suck, as a Leon/Ashley shipper, to see in the intro that he was actually, at one point, specifically assigned to her? And that the rest of the series then just ignored that? Yes. It does suck. But, the only reason why that was said in the first place was just as a scene-setter, and, realistically, there was no way to keep Leon relevant in the RE series if he was just assigned to presidential security detail. And of course they were going to want to make sure Leon stayed relevant in RE because of how much of a cultural phenomenon RE4 actually became. They'd have been stupid to not change the role of his character to one that could be used over and over and over again for different stories.

But at the time, Mikami and his team didn't know -- and had no way of knowing -- just how successful RE4 was going to become. It was just as likely that RE4 was going to go the way of REmake, and the series was going to die with its release. So, if it died, at least it ended with Umbrella being defeated and long gone, and Leon having a mostly happily-ever-after in a cushy gov't job protecting the president's family.

We know now that that's not how it went, so things had to change, but. It would've been a fine way for things to have ended, if they did, in fact, end there.

So it just kind of... is what it is.
