I'm on a bit of an Encanto kick lately and upon rewatching the Dod Oroguitas number I realized something...
Abuelo Pedro was the magical one. I say this because the butterfly always followed him around, we see that from the beginning. The candle didn't take on its magical properties until Abuelo Pedro's spirit was released (when he died) the house sprang up around his literal murder site so clearly the guy had some hella magical powers going on.
Abuela doesn't seem to have these gifts, not saying she isn't special but Alma herself never really displayed any magic, so that means that the thing she despised in Mirabel is the thing she really despised in herself.
Also it seems that as far as magical gifts go the males in that family have the really huge ones, dunno about Pedro but Bruno had the ability to tell the future which is pretty big, arguably. We can't count Augustine or Felix because they simply married into the family and were non-magical from the beginning. Though it does beg the question as to why Abuela wouldn't have wanted her kids to marry others with magical gifts, then again maybe in her younger days she was more accepting of non-magical people.
Makes one wonder what could have changed her mind on that... O_o I mean she couldn't take one look at sweet innocent little Mirabel one day and decide that she was the devil herself, no it reminded her of something else. But what? Maybe someday that'll be answered.

okay so... I was rewatching Encanto songs (cof cof dos oruguitas cof) and I came to realise something that more people must have realised:
so... have you ever thought that one of the reason why Abuela is so obsessed with Isabela being "perfect" and marrying and having children to keep up the family's legacy is because maybe she sees herself in Isa?
like... they look really alike in appearance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(ofc Isa's wearin makeup so they maybe not seem much alike)
also, I think that Mariano resembles Abuelo in appearance too (not to much, I believe it's the beard and the eyes lmao):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sooo... maybe Alma sees her youngself on Isabela and sees Pedro in Mariano and tries hard to make them work to not only keep the Madrigal Miracle alive but also to see, at least at a certain distance and on other people, she and Pedro being able to be together?
Idk, I thought this and it made some sense to me? what about you guys, what's your opinion?

Random Encanto Headcanon
All the guys in the Madrigal family (yes, including Mariano) have worn at least one piece of feminine clothing at some point in their lives.
Pedro tried wearing a dress out of curiosity when he was 12.
Bruno begged Alma to make him a flower crown after seeing her make some for his sisters. No, she couldn't resist his puppy eyes. Why do you ask?
Felix and Agustin tried swapping clothes with their wives one time (see some pics on the internet). Yes, they were brave enough to admit that they looked great.
Camilo has always wanted to wear a skirt since he got his gift, but he was scared that the rest of the family wouldn't approve of it. Now he wears skirts every Pride Month after coming out as genderfluid.
Antonio has been dolled up by Isabela multiple times, with the makeup and all.
Mariano eventually gets into it and buys a dress for himself. Dolores buys a suit to match.
Mirabel & Luisa love their dad, uncles, cousins, and cousin-in-law, but at the same time they're DONE with them, just because they look like they want to draw unwanted attention.
"How many times have we told them that they're not in a drag show?!" "A gazillion, maybe. They're such a drag."
-Mirabel Valentina Madrigal & Luisa Paola Madrigal, 2022

do u have any alma and pedro headcanons?? LOVE ur blog queen 😋😋
aww thank you so much!! and ooh this is interesting ask! I never get questions about alma and pedro but I think it would be fun to explore them!
some of these are inspired from “tale of three sisters” encanto book! I highly recommend it!!
pedro is confirmed to be a writer so I feel like he would write poetry and stories for alma or inspired by her!!
Alma snorts when she laughs!! and pedro finds it really cute!
Pedro taught her to sew and then she passed it down to her kids!
Pedro is dramatic!! he’s very theatrical in nature! (we can see where madrigals get that from)
I feel like alma was always someone who was community orientated! her and pedro probably got lots of help as a young couple from the village! and they would return the favor!
Pedro is a really good cook! and alma is a really good dancer!
both of them learned to play an instrument! (don’t know what but I think them as musicians is fun!)
pedro would talk to the babies as they were growing inside alma all the time! like full on conversation! “your mama is real stressed right now could you calm down on the kicking”
Pedro always wanted to be a dad!
he’s also a really bad snorer but alma loves him too much to say that!
Pedro is impatient! he can get annoyed easily whilst alma is more patient!
He loves exploring and starts talking to alma about the places they were going to visit with the triplets!

Encantober 2023 Day 27: Grave
The lake near the Encanto was considered a special memorial for Alma. She considered it to be Pedro’s grave, since that was where he died and the miracle was born. Alma would visit the lake often to remember Pedro and have taken the triplets there on several of their birthdays to remember him.
The day after the triplets’ fifty-first birthday, Alma decided to bring the entire family to the lake to have a memorial service together. She wanted to do one for a while, but when Bruno disappeared, she felt like she could not do so. Now that Bruno was back, she decided this year was the best time to take her sons-in-law and grandchildren to the lake where Pedro died and the miracle was born.
Once the Madrigal family got to the lake, Alma brought a big box with her filled with lots of things, but she did not tell the rest of the family what was in there. They were for each part of the memorial service, and she would reveal them during each part. The rest of the Madrigals set up some towels to sit on, since they were having lunch together there too.
Once the family got settled down, Alma stood at the center of the family’s towels so everyone could see her. “Family, after ten years of waiting and planning, we can finally commemorate the life of Pedro Madrigal with the entire family.” The rest of the family applauded during the break of silence. “We will start this memorial with a speech from Bruno Madrigal, since we waited for him to come back to do this.”
Bruno stood up and the rest of the family applauded again once he stood next to his mother. “Gracias, mami, first of all, I just want to address how happy I am to be back. When Mirabel found me in the walls, I didn’t want to say anything to her, but now that she promised to bring me back home when she saved the miracle, I can say that coming back was the best decision I ever made. When mami first took Julieta, Pepa, and me to this lake the day after our gift ceremony, I couldn’t comprehend what was happening. None of us did, but I was the least verbal at the time, so I couldn’t verbalize what I was feeling.”
The family applauded when Bruno paused. “When mami told me she wanted to do this for several years and waited for me to come back to do it, that was when I realized how important I really was to this family. Mirabel, you were the one who made me realize how important I was to this family and made me understand how my disappearance has affected this family negatively. Gracias, sobrina.”
The family applauded as Mirabel stood up and made her way to Alma and Bruno. “Gracias, Tio Bruno; while I do understand the feeling of being useless to the family, But when Abuela affirmed that Abuelo sent her me to help this family, that was when I also knew how important I was to this family, and wanted Bruno to know the same thing.”
The family applauded one more time before Mirabel and Bruno sat back on their towels. Alma brought out the box and stood back in the center. She took out a small candle from the box and held it up for the rest of the family to see. She walked closer to the lake and turned around for the family.
“As you know, the miracle is represented by the candle. The candle also represents the legacy that Pedro has left for us. I have one candle for each of us to say something we wish we could experience with Pedro.”
Alma turned around and kneeled down and put the candle near the water. “I wish I would have experienced the growth of our children and grandchildren together.” She then released the candle into the water. “I now want to do this in age order with my blood relatives. Married relatives will go after their spouses.”
Julieta stood up and grabbed a candle from the box. They all took one and kneeled down and said what they wished they could have experienced with Pedro. They each went in age order with the spouses going after their spouses, starting with Julieta and ending with Antonio.
“I wish I could have had you as a father figure to guide me through my life.”
“I wish I could have gotten to know you as a father-in-law.”
“I wish I could have had the father daughter relationship with you that I craved for so long and guide me through my feelings.”
“I wish I could have gotten to know you and guide me through the Madrigal family.”
“I wish I could have had you around to share the plays I wrote and been my support system throughout my life.”
“I wish I could have had you to share my flowers with.”
“I wish I could have had you to tell secrets with and share what was on my mind.”
“I wish I could have come to you for comfort when I was stressed.”
“I wish I could have had fun with you and joke around with you.”
“I wish I could have had you to look up to and guide me through my life.”
“I wish I could have played with you and shared fun memories with you.”
Once each family member shared their wish for Pedro, they each put their candle on the water and watched them float away. They backed away from the lake to watch the candles float away and put their arms around each other.
“Each of you had a wish for Pedro you wanted to give. Each of them were unique to your own experiences and wished to share memories with him.”
For the rest of the day, the family gave speeches about what they thought Pedro would have been like if he lived to see and raise them, and during lunch, Alma talked about all the best memories she had with Pedro when they were married and dating. It was the best remembrance Alma ever had for Pedro, now that she has her entire family remembering him together for the very first time.

are you taking prompts?
genderbend au, Bruna explaining she doesn't want a quinseñera because she dislikes being in the spotlight
Confession time, I have an entire genderbent AU in my head 😅
As the triplets' fifteenth birthday got closer and closer, Almer despaired. How in the world were his children fifteen already? Had it truly been fifteen years since his Pedra was lost to him?
God, Bruna was looking more and more like her every day. She was smaller than her mother had been, thinner and much more quiet. But that face, the hair, that smile...She was Pedra in miniature.
And right now, her pretty face (her mother's face) was creased by an anxious frown. She shuffled from foot to foot, wringing her small hands.
"Papá, who'd want to come to a quinceañera for me?" she asked, looking at him with wide, sad eyes.
"You have that new friend, don't you?" he asked. He absentmindedly patted her shoulder, mentally running through today's checklist of duties and meetings. "Augusta?"
"Agustína," she corrected quietly. "B-but, um...That's just o-one person and-"
"Ay, mija, the village will come. Don't worry, you know they will."
That didn't seem to reassure her. On the contrary, she looked more nervous than ever.
Almer wished with all his might that Pedra was here. This was something Bruna needed her mamá for. She was growing up, a young woman already, and Almer could only do so much.
How his daughter remained so shy and nervous with Pepe frequently rough-housing with her (despite Almer's many warnings not to drag his sister into such antics), he would never understand. She was the only girl in a house of boys and, right now, Almer was sharply reminded of that fact.
Behind Bruna, on the stairs, Pedra's portrait seemed to look at him accusingly.
What did he know of dress shopping, or hair, or make-up? He wanted this to be perfect for her, but how on earth was he to manage that?
Pedra, I need you, he thought desperately. There was no answer, of course. Just Pedra's portrait and Pedra's daughter, her ghost and shadow; his little girl, not so little anymore.
A quinceañera was such an important event. Almer would make sure it was perfect.
Somehow.
He wanted that fear to leave his daughter's eyes. He wanted the shadow of failure and accusation to leave him.
He mustered up a smile and straightened Bruna's shoulders.
"Chin up, mija," he said. "This will be perfect."
"Er...Right," she said. "I-I just...I don't know if I-"
"I'll set aside some time tomorrow to take you shopping, okay?" He began to walk away, chin up and shoulders back, the proud and all-knowing leader of the Encanto. "Don't worry, Brunita. We'll handle it."
He barely heard her quiet, "Right," as he walked away.
(It wasn't until he found Juliano and Bruna in the kitchen at their own birthday, with Juliano calming his sister down from a panic attack, that he finally realised what Bruna had been trying to tell him all along)

Decay AU | Dante and Abuelo
Tumblr media
Decay watched by the door as her son played happily with his ghosts; his eyes a vivid glowing blue to see to what she couldn’t. The glow much like Tio Bruno’s used to go when he had his visions but she could see how happy little Dante was; talking to them and listening to what they had to say. It was odd getting used to this; a one sided conversation but she hadn’t heard anything to be concerning.
Of course, it was possible for him to bring them to the view of outsiders; to hear their conversations but this was still very new to him to fully grasp the expanse of his gift. Watcher Mirabel had said his gift was powerful. Decay didn’t doubt that but she knew better than to push him with exploring it too much. He was too young. He didn’t understand death…
Decay knew the day would come where he could encounter a…malleolus soul but she had to hope his ghost friends to shield him away from what she couldn’t. Her head tilted ad he paused, looking to a spot on the floor with a thoughtful look and drop his toys and held his hands up.
“Yes please! I so want to try!”
A shimmering glow echoed before transparent lines of a figure seemed to materialise upon her son’s frame, her heart leapt in fear before he rose into the air and seemed to settle into the frame of a tall male light of a blue hue seemed to settle some depth and shading. She stepped in, her hands clenching before she watched the figure turn to face her.
His other hand held up that wasn’t supporting Dante; almost like a surrender but… it was his face that made her gasp sharply out, her jaw dropping even as Dante was obviously poking the ghost’s clothes; more colour filtering into his frame.
“Abuelo Pedro?” She knew his face off by heart; she had passed his portrait every morning back in her AU, even the rooms here had a place dedicated to his memory, of all Pedro Madrigals that had given his life for his family.
Dante perked up, “He’s my new friend!”
Decay looked between though there was a fondness in her Abuelo’s face as he softly adjusted the child. Some part of her didn’t want to believe that…this was happening but she couldn’t deny it the weight that this gave her. If her Abuela knew… how could she react; knowing that her son could call her husband’s ghost to him when he so desired it. Decay knew Abuela had freaked out once when Camilo had been 5 and shifted into Abuelo; poor timing as Abuela had turned the corner at that moment.
It hadn’t been a forgettable moment.
But…Abuelo was here now. He…looked so alive, if muted; it was clear Dante wasn’t pushing for sound; only for a solid hold before Dante pulled Abuelo’s attention by prodding him cursorily in the cheek. Abuelo relaxed his other arm to properly hold his Bisnieto
“Dante,” Decay asked softly, stepping forwards towards them.
“Yes, mami?”
“Do you know who this is?”
Dante looked innocently to Abuelo thoughtfully. “His name is Pedro. He’s my friends.”
“No,” Decay smiled a little but shook her head and resisted the urge to run her fingers through his hair; that’s only lead to getting his hair caught into her prostheses again; she didn’t want to put him through that again. “This is my Abuelo Pedro. Your Bisabuelo Pedro, Mijo.”
Dante looked shocked at the idea. “I have a Bisabuelo?!” looking to his Bisabuelo quickly, “really?!”
Abuelo seemed to speak next, his lips moving and gently bobbed up and down as he spoke.
“this is the best day ever!” Dante exclaimed, “I… I got ice cream, my friend is my Bisabuelo and I get to play and have as much fun as I want with him!”
Decay’s throat tightened a little, but didn’t have the heart to tell him otherwise… no this was…so much to take in. But, her son was happy and…Abuelo wasn’t looking displeased. He…accepted him so easily. Decay knew Dante was a bastard child given she wasn’t married and no doubt Abuela would shame her for that, but… Abuelo here accepted him. It flooded her with a sense of…relief. Joy. Dante had someone who would love him just as much as she did unconditionally.
