“You know, I can appreciate your skills, Logan.”

“Yes, it certainly would seem so,” Logan said under his breath, “seeing as you’ve barred me from both group discussions you’ve initiated thus far. Very appreciative.”

Janus leveled his gaze, a crooked smile tugging at his mouth, though Logan didn’t see much to smile about. “I wasn’t aware you could use sarcasm.”

He twirled a stolen knight between his fingers as he studied the board, unaware of (or duly ignoring) Logan’s stern frown. The logical side was tempted to knock the piece from his hands if it would make him look up.

“How much of an idiot do you take me for, Janus?” he said instead, no effort wasted on trying to conceal the frustration in his voice.

Janus still didn’t look up - the knight twirled still in his gloved hand - but his facial expression shifted from focused to something a bit more open, eyebrows raised with a little shake of his head. “None at all. You’re logic,” he said, tilting his head at the board. “It would be a mistake to underestimate your intelligence, I think.”

“Spare me the flattery.”

“It’s not flattery,” he shot back immediately. Logan stilled across the table, and finally, Janus looked up, met his eyes with that guarded expression, eyebrows furrowed and mismatched gaze scrutinizing. The knight in his hand paused its twirl as they stared at each other. “You’re intelligent, Logan. It’s your job - I’m being genuine when I say it’s foolish to underestimate your competency within it. And while I’ve certainly made some... mistakes in executing plans, I am not a fool.

“But I’m curious,” he continued, setting the knight down at last and turning his focus to his remaining pieces on the board, “what you think my reasons were for pushing you aside in the discussions.”

Logan blinked at him. “What I think,” he repeated flatly.

“Yes. I know that brilliant head of yours rarely leaves something unjustified, so what did you decide when I left you out of the court room scenario? Or when I pulled you out of Patton’s, eh-” Janus made a face, juggling a few words in his head- “ breakdown? What were my reasons, if you were to guess?”

If he were to guess... “Well,” Logan started with an exhale, looking to the board as well, watching as Janus moved a bishop near his own. “At the time of the court room scene, I assumed...” I wasn’t welcome. He pressed his lips tightly together. “I assumed you’d decided my input was unnecessary. The discussion mainly seemed to center around desires, I suppose, and I’m not often the first resort for that kind of thing.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t typically care about the same factors as the others in those situations. Roman, for instance, wanted to go to the callback because it was a dream of his,” he studied his own pieces, tapping his fingertips together as Janus watched him silently, “but I simply thought we should go to the one that had more to offer Thomas in the long run. That outlook - something so objective or calculating - isn’t usually... of interest among the others.”

Janus nodded, more for Logan than himself it seemed. “And after the wedding?”

He set his queen aside, putting Janus’ bishop in sight of his own rook. Janus would have to waste a move to save it or sacrifice the piece to get Logan’s king out in the open - it depended, he supposed, on how valuable Janus deemed the bishop in the long run. What he could get out of its loss.

“I assumed I was unwanted.”

He wasn’t sure what he expected from Janus. A laugh, maybe - that odd, practiced simper of his - or perhaps a nod of confirmation, something haughty to rub in what Logan already knew, what he’d thought about relentlessly since he was placed without care in the back of a courtroom to simply watch the proceedings, since he was yanked from a discussion and left to merely listen to its solution. He still wasn’t sure how to read Janus, not in full, so his guesses were many and uncertain.

None of those guesses could predict Janus simply... sighing.

“I thought you might say that,” he said, voice weary, and rested his chin on an open palm as he studied Logan. The logical side just blinked back at him, flummoxed.

“Is that not the reason?” he asked after a moment, his frown returning when Janus just raised an eyebrow.

“Of course that’s not the reason, Logan. Not the way you’re interpreting it, anyway.” Janus’ gaze fell to the chessboard once more, yet again ignoring Logan’s indignance, and he moved his bishop back toward his remaining pieces, saving it from Logan’s rook and wasting a valuable move in the process. “For someone so bright, you’re certainly a bit dim sometimes.”

“Feel free to enlighten me, please,” Logan deadpanned.

“You’re logic-”

“I’m aware.”

“You’re logic,” Janus repeated, sending Logan a sharp look for interrupting him, “and you’re invaluable in most situations, as the crux of Thomas’ clear reasoning. You’re focused, and levelheaded - most of the time - and remarkably farsighted when it comes to goals and decisions. The others can be a bit- distractible, I suppose, by their own end goals, but you’ve shown consistency in convincing them to stay focused when necessary.

“I, on the other hand, while certainly skilled at influence and persuasion, tend to be self-involved.” He paused, as if waiting for Logan to agree, raising his eyebrows a bit when he just stayed silent and attentive. “Thus, I’ll admit, I’m willing to fight a losing battle so long as my own expectations are met in the end. With that in mind, do you see why I would try to avoid your involvement in a scenario such as the court room?”

Logan stared at him, the cog wheels turning in his head. “You left me out,” he said, slowly, as gradually as it dawned on him, “because I would have convinced the others to go to the callback.”

Janus smiled at him, pride clear in his eyes. “Precisely. And while that would have been the more favorable ending for Thomas in the long run - most likely - my goal was not to reach a favorable decision; it was simply to show Thomas how constantly and thoroughly he’d been lying to himself. Had you partaken in the trial, I might never have achieved that goal as I did.

“Of course, I certainly didn’t intend for Thomas to condemn himself to the wedding because of it.” He examined his glove, tugging it down by the hem, and Logan didn’t miss something tense in his voice as he added, “Roman surprised all of us with that sentence, I think, for better or for worse.”

“But why after the wedding? Why did you replace me then?”

Janus composed look faltered - Logan could just make out the pink flush that colored the non-scaly half of his face. “Ah. I’m afraid that, uh,” he cleared his throat, “that was solely in my own self-interest.”

There was a beat of silence as Logan blinked again, anticipating an explanation that didn’t come without prompt. So he prompted. “How so?”

“Well-” Janus shut his mouth, scrunched it to the side, and Logan had to admit, it was surprisingly endearing from someone who worked so hard to make himself seem antagonistic. “I didn’t exactly leave a good impression on Thomas or Patton after the trial, but that was the first time either of them had truly entertained my argument.” His eyes flitted to Logan and right back down again. “Without me being disguised for it, I mean.

“So when Patton got overwhelmed by Roman’s line of questioning, and when we all could see how Thomas was being affected, I thought that maybe I could... well, I suppose I just thought I could help somehow, and improve my standing with some of you.”

Logan nodded along with the explanation, tapping his fingertips together again as he considered it. “That didn’t work very well with Roman,” he said without thinking.

He regretted it when Janus grimaced. “No, it did not. But that’s the trade I made in the situation.”

“And in both situations, you traded my involvement - my input,” Logan emphasized, and Janus clearly held back another wince, “for your own?”

“...More or less.”

Logan nodded again, more to himself than Janus, and stole Janus’ bishop with his queen. “You could have just talked to me.”

It seemed Janus’ turn to go still across the table. Logan set to lining up the stolen pieces before him, ordering them by importance - three pawns, a bishop, and a knight - and straightening them out to face the same direction as Janus just stared at him.

“What?”

“You could have spoken to me before the trial,” he said coolly, “or joined me in my endeavor for Patton and Roman after the wedding, instead of impersonating and disregarding me. We could have worked something out together.”

Janus opened his mouth, shut it, opened it again, much more like a fish than a snake in the moment. After a minute of the loop, he just looked down at the chessboard, eyebrows furrowed. He reached out to move a piece of his own and dropped it just as quickly. His eyes were unfocused as he seemed to think hard about the proposition, and interestingly enough, he began to tap his fingertips together. “Would you have actually listened?”

“Of course I would have.” Janus looked back up at him - Logan had never been the best at parsing facial expressions without words to compound them, but the disbelief in the other Side’s eyes was difficult to miss. Logan felt his own stern frown soften. “We both want what’s best for Thomas, Janus. We certainly go about it in different ways, but I will always be willing to listen to your goals, even if I don’t share them myself.

“I truly believe what you wanted to accomplish with the trial was a necessary tribulation for Thomas’ mental wellbeing in the long run. What’s more, as frustrated as I was at the time, I respected your de-escalation of the outburst after the wedding. You said it yourself - you have quite the aptitude for influence and persuasion, and I admire your confidence in your abilities. I also find it worthy to note that, while I appreciate your calling my farsight remarkable,” he said, offering Janus a small smile in thanks and inspirit, “we’re both strategists. We would make a good team, if you’d allow it.”

Janus stared at him, eyes wide. Logan had seen him speechless only once - right before his outburst after the trial - and this was a significantly different experience, it seemed; he tugged at the hem of his glove, eyes flitting across Logan’s face like he was searching for a tell, something to reveal a lie hidden beneath layers of flattery. Logan simply stared back.

After a minute, Janus seemed to find nothing disingenuous in the logical Side’s words or expression, and his gaze fell to the table. He gave his glove a final, straightening tug, and turned his flustered attention to the board once more, barely considering the pieces before he moved his queen directly beside Logan’s king, free for capture.

Logan studied the board, one eyebrow raised, and the corner of his mouth quirked up after a moment. “You almost had checkmate,” he commented with the little smile.

“I know.” Janus began straightening the stolen pieces in front of him, lining them up as Logan had, careful to avoid Logan’s gaze. “Consider it a peace offering.”

“Forfeiting a game as thanks doesn’t seem like something you’d enjoy.”

“I told you,” he said, and though Logan would expect some bite to the phrase usually, there was something almost soft in Janus’ tone, “I don’t care about losing so long as I get something out of it in the end.”

Logan’s smile grew, just a bit. He moved his own queen, and Janus’ king was cornered. Checkmate. “What do you get out of this?”

Janus studied the win with a small smile of his own. “One less enemy, I think. Maybe the beginning of a very good team.” His gaze flickered to Logan’s at last, sparkling and sly, so utterly characteristic that it was somehow comforting to the logical Side. He could get used to having that on his side. “I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

“I suppose we will.”

Regular (Part One): NCT CEO AU

Summary: Y/N doesn’t exactly see herself as a shining example of the ideal woman, and her dating life often suffers as a consequence. Yet, when she fills in for her boss at a conference, Y/N finds herself on the receiving end of not one, not two, but three gorgeous and successful CEOs who are all determined to win her heart.

Blueprint (part of The Stray Wolves Series): Felix One-Shot

Summary: Y/N is tired of her werewolf pack dictating her choices, especially when they arrange a marriage to one of her friends. In retaliation, Y/N sneaks out one night in direct defiance of her alpha’s orders, and she meets a mysterious vampire who allows her the first tempting taste of freedom...and she might just fall in love with him in the process.

“School Life” (a hoodie season AU prequel): Hwang Hyunjin Drabble

Summary: When Y/N is hired as the librarian at her former high school, she isn’t exactly thrilled to return. Of course, there’s also the issue of the persistent dance teacher who seems determined to win her affections.

Summary: It was nerve-wracking sometimes - keeping her new relationship with Minho a secret from the others. However, Y/N has bigger problems on her mind, like why Seungmin seems determined to make her life a living hell.

Summary: Oftentimes, Y/N is fine with Changbin’s insistence that she and their new pup stay protected inside the cabin. But just one night outside the camp should be okay, right?

Summary: Ever since you could remember, you had always dreamed about your wedding, and the date of the ceremony is quickly approaching. You’re more than ready to marry your fiancé, even if he has been a little short with the planning. However, you never counted on your ex-boyfriend, Changbin, showing up to the ceremony.

Zone (Chan One-Shot): Fifty Shades of Gray AU (hell yeah I did it)

Summary: Y/N is fine with her life. She has cool friends, who she sometimes hooks up with, and she loves her job as a freelance writer. Until she’s hired to ghost write for a CEO, realizing too late that it’s the same guy who used to bully her in high school.

Dragon Three (3racha in the house): Game of Thrones AU

Summary: In order to stake her claim to the throne, Y/N must cross the narrow sea and destroy an enemy who has an endless barrage of assassins tracking her every movement. But at least she has her faithful advisor, Felix, by her side, and an intimidating army of Dragons who only serve their queen.

Close (Streetlight Sequel): Changbin One-Shot (was a Drabble, but now I’m combining two different requested ideas)

Summary: She’s like a new world waiting to be discovered, and Changbin wants to know everything about her. But maybe they could start by moving in together with the rest of his family.

??? Maybe a potential Wolverine Chan AU ??? Because of his new haircut?
