Our big, powerful Radio Demon is lost and he can't even shadow travel to find Luci's room quicker. Poor baby.

lmao sorry i went off the grid for a sec. life happens, you know, applied for some vsf programs, went on a classified operative excursion away from my post and got a new writing software. i actually wrote the last of this on a helicopter returning from the mission so that’s why i didn’t proofread beforehand sorryyyyy. but more importantly I TOUCHED GRASS. guys. i touched so much grass. i touched so much grass i could replant a garden. call me a topiary, i touched that much grass. is this what it’s like to work at a dispensary? bc i touched so much grass

Ever since the initial zombie outbreak, you’ve been running around the country with your best friend Ike and the circle of close friends you both share. You’ve made peace with the fact that it will always be hard. You and your band hop around from town to wilds, with no real objective other than to survive. Every location has something to glean, after all. It’s just that the zombies are always on your tail, and there’s only so much looting to do before the chorus of dead can tear you and your family apart.
It’s deluded to pretend you’re the invulnerable main characters, though. You and your friends are in a townhouse currently being ambushed by a strain of zombies. You swear they’ve gotten more intelligent since your last encounter. A dense herd of bloodthirsty undead is one thing, but a dense herd of bloodthirsty undead that have a chance of understanding positioning is another. Closing doors is barely a second of relief now. 
You were lucky to be in a room with Vox when you got ambushed. He lived his post-apocalyptic life with a rebar rod in his hand, wrested from a collapsed concrete building early in during the initial outbreak. He claimed to be a trained swordsman once, and even though the rebar was more of a club than a sword, you admit you would’ve been worse than dead if you didn’t have him by your side. You’re sure he’d be screwed without you, too. Now that the world’s gone to the dogs, you stay prepared with a pair of climbing picks that can clobber in zombie brains just as well as scale walls. Vox shoved zombies out of the way while your picks cleared a path to escape from the house out through the window, Vox in tow.
You and Vox reunite with Ike and Shu outside. The former keeps various kitchen knives hidden under his no-longer white mantle, and defends Shu from stragglers while he digs into his backpack. You notice his weapon, an iron fire poker, by his feet along with a bottle. He rips sheets off of an old Millwall brick to stuff inside the bottle.
“Blowing the place up,” Shu says, in case you didn’t make the connection already. His breath is ragged. “Where’s Luca and Mysta?”
Like a stage cue, you hear the rocket of gunfire the second he says it. Your hope is crushed. Noise attracts zombies, and Luca was the only one with a shotgun. If he pulled the trigger, the situation was even more dire than you thought. 
Shu grits his teeth and repeats himself, intensity barely restrained. “Where is Luca and Mysta.”
“I’m going back in,” Vox declares.
Ike drives a knife into the head of a fallen body. Destroying the brain confirmed they wouldn’t regenerate, and he minimizes the risk as precise as a surgeon. He made short work of the zombies that hadn’t overrun the house yet, but you could see them flood the interior. “Don’t be stupid, Vox, that’s suicide.”
“You heard the gun!”
“And I said that’s suicide!”
“Not if someone goes back in!”
“How are you going to find them without getting yourself killed?” Vox opened his mouth, but no sound came out, and Ike took advantage of it. “That’s what I thought. Luca’s our muscle and Mysta’s a clever guy, you’ve seen him outsmart the zombies so many times before!”
“They know basic organization, Ike!”
“All the more reason not to go back in! Have some faith in your friends!”
Vox grants him an unholy leer through his haunting yellow eyes. “How dare you lecture me about faith when I’m trying to save their lives.”
His glare was lost. Ike focuses on confirming the dead stay dead. His back is turned from the swordsman as he chops a skull in two with a butcher’s cleaver. “Because no matter what, they’re going to get out, and they want you out just as much as they’re fighting.”
But Ike’s words were just as lost to Vox; you barely saw the trail of his blood-splattered haori before he ran back to the townhouse, rebar in hand and fury on display.
Shu shoves the remains of the Millwall brick into the cupholder of his pack, a battering ram for another day. He produces a box of matches instead. “It’s best to take them all out at once.”
You speak up. “But Vox just-”
“I know.” Shu’s lips purse. “And I’m not going to throw them. Not until I know they’re all safe.”
You watch as Vox speared through a living corpse, then threw its remains on the ground. The zombies are centered inside the house, but the windows are all covered. The door stays open as he passes through the threshold, but you can’t see a trace of him left.
Ike stabs through a brain close to you and Shu. You see him heft himself up, and the traces of a permanent dead remain on the ground. The head is split open with precision, and the brain blooms out from the skull. It leaks pink nerves and black rot among the blood, like a disgusting flower. 
He passes by you, dead set on his goal. “You’re not going, Reader.”
“I wasn’t planning on it.”
“And don’t expect to.” Ike’s words are emotionless, but not cold. As much as he pushes away Vox, you know he cares for everyone in your group like brothers. He’s the least risky out of all six of you- after all, he’s tearing apart zombie brains without a complaint while you catch your breath and Shu stands watch.
You draw your climbing picks and follow him to the field of dead. “Let me help you.”
You feel useless just standing there, after all.
Though the task of confirmation is much calmer than fighting for your life, it’s still unenviable, and you have to admire how Ike distances himself seemingly so easily from it. You try not to look at their faces, but that’s just as impossible. After all, the brain is right between the eyes. That’s the worst part. 
You made the mistake of looking into zombie eyes twice in your life. 
The first was your first fight of the apocalypse; a zombie had you deadlocked in an aisle of an outdoors store, and only when it was within biting range did you drum up the courage to grab the first thing you saw- two fluorescent orange climbing picks, never used- and drive them into the writhing heart. You bolted then, too focused on escape than freezing, and those climbing picks proved themselves to be your best survival tool in combat and exploration. 
The second was the first time you confirmed the dead, and those eyes, that face- skin and bone but youthful, blue bleeding through the iris like a cracked yolk, remains of eyeliner and mascara along her deteriorated features- she was a person, so young, so beautiful when she was alive, like she knew she had decades to go- sometimes you swear she’s the face you see at night when you remember how human and how simply unlucky this world is now. It’s simply unlucky, and being unlucky is simply brutal. 
(You held back your tears when you bashed her brain in. Later that night you pulled your best friend Ike aside, and cried in mourning of a woman whose name you never learned. He didn’t complain then, either, and you only sobbed harder when you realized as much as he comforted you, he could never muster up the vulnerability to grieve himself.)
You club a pick into the forehead of the fresh, putrid dead. The other pries it open, and a third swipe pulverizes with finality. 
It’s messy. When you drive your weapons into the skull there’s a crack of metal against bone, and a thin gush of blood that spurts out to your arms. Especially large openings reveal nodules of black rot spotted through the brain. If you focus, you can see the moist, moldy texture seep through the wrinkles of the brain, and if you were any less jaded it’d be enough to make you turn your head and hurl. 
But the deed is done in only three stabs, and you cling onto that fact. The more mechanical the task is, the easier it is to drive yourself to just get it done. Club, pry, pulverize. Club, pry, pulverize. 
You pass by one of Ike’s carvings as you move onto another body. His work is premeditated from habit; he usually does this deed while everyone else recuperates. A standard chef’s knife is his weapon of choice when he faces against zombies, but he keeps a cleaver sheathed to his side when he has the time to get precise. One good slash goes through bone. Bone sweeps through the brain, and the work is done, and he carries on to the next, messy on his mantle but clean in the cut.
There are only a few more bodies left untouched on the yard where you hear heavy steps on the grass and Shu’s voice cry out. “Luca!”
You and Ike snap up. Luca’s blond hair is matted to his face with blood and rot as Vox runs beside him. They look like they ran through a blender of decayed flesh, and considering the herd of dead inside the house, perhaps that isn’t so strange of a metaphor. Even as Luca sprints, he turns to pump shotgun lead to the predators when they get closer, and each corpse’s fall is punctuated by hot gunfire.
Shu calls out his name again frantically. The men return, and so do you and Ike, five missing one. “Luca, where’s Mysta?”
“It’s bloody,” Luca simply says. His breath is short, and he wipes at the mess of gore and hair on his forehead. All it accomplishes is smearing black and red together along his face and in a blotch along his arm. 
“But where is he, I need to know!”
“And it’s so much.” He trails off. He stares into the side of the townhouse and beyond the distance. Strapped to his back is his go-to weapon, a baseball bat littered with nails, each with residue dripping off the spikes from freshly killed zombies. “There’s a lot. Oh, I’m feeling kind of- kind of cold.”
“He’s in shock,” Ike says. He takes Luca’s hand in his, but Luca doesn’t even react. “Oh, Luca. What happened?”
“Kind of a lot?”
“Where’s Mysta?”
“He…” Luca’s eyes dart to the center of the townhouse. “He’s stuck, because of me, isn’t he?”
“Alright, lay off the man.” Vox intervenes. “We’re done asking questions. Shu. Your matches. Light it up.”
“What?!” Shu screams at Vox. You’ve heard him yell, but never once have you heard him scream. Especially not with Vox sounding so detached. “No, are you crazy? Mysta is in there!”
“Light it up, Shu-“
“I said, no! No! No way, not a- not a fucking chance!”
“Shu, listen to me!” Vox thunders. “I’m sorry, but Mysta is gone.”
Shu stands his ground. His features are tense, and his ultraviolet eyes burn holes through the earth. “Not a fucking chance.”
“Mysta is gone,” Vox insists, and you hear his bassy voice break even lower. “I saw it myself.”
“He is not.”
“It was too overrun, it’s miraculous Luca even got out.”
“Mysta,” Luca says, and closes his eyes. Ike holds him upright and rubs his arm, as comforting as he possibly can in the worst situation, as much as possible when his own face is just as distraught as everyone else.
“And I wish with everything that I have that I could’ve gotten him out,” Vox continues, more of his own justification than anyone else. “And I wish I was just a little faster, and that they were a little further away, and, God, that he wasn’t trapped, but he was, and I wasn’t fast enough, I wasn’t close enough…”
Shu is murmuring his own protests to himself at this point, and feeling the pit in your stomach yourself, you reach to hold his hand. He jerks away like you’re made of lava. You feel ill. “You’re lying to me.”
“And he got bit, and he knew that meant death. And he ran, ran upstairs, to draw them away from us, and there were more, and he knew, he knew, he knew he was dead but we weren’t.”
Luca lets his head fall on Ike’s chest. Ike becomes his crutch, and holds him. “Mysta.”
“His distraction saved Luca’s life. And mine if I was slow.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“He was a hero,” Vox says.
“Stop.” Shu’s eyes shut. He looks like stone about to break, paralyzed in denial as the proper grief is setting in. His hands dive and clasp around yours. He’s trembling. You squeeze back. “Don’t talk about him like he’s dead.”
“He was a hero, and our brother, and the sun. Please don’t devalue his sacrifice like that.”
“Oh my god.” Ike interrupts, and his face is paler than the dead. “Oh my god. Oh my god, Luca, don’t look.”
With one hand, he buries Luca’s head into the fabric of his mantle, and with the other, he points to the tallest point of the townhouse. 
You crane your neck up and squint. The townhouse has one window peeking out from the room along one small wall. When you recognize the shapes through the window your legs nearly give out. Startling, saturated, unadulterated horror grips you. You see his hat.
“He’s still alive,” you whisper. “Or he rose. But he’s still surrounded.”
With revived desperation Vox grasps Shu by the shoulders. “Don’t devalue his sacrifice, Shu, you know better than anyone he never wanted to fall victim to that curse. Let him and the rest of the zombies pass on properly, like a hero should. Light the match, please. Please.”
You absorb the chaos as if you weren’t there. You’re detached. Nothing feels real, not even as Ike strokes Luca’s hair, distressed and staring at the window, while Luca is just as distanced as you are. Vox’s heroic resolve shattered as he recounted Mysta’s last moments, and Shu, the smart one out of your group, can’t even function anymore. You knew everyone considered themselves each other’s family, but Shu and Mysta were especially close, and it tears you apart to watch Shu finally grasp the terror of the townhouse ambush. 
Shu lets go of your hands to cover his face. Through the gaps between bloodstained gloves, you can see the sparkle of tears. He’s crying. “This isn’t possible.”
“Do the right thing,” you say. “Do what he would’ve wanted.”
Shu stands so still. He looks up to the sky, as if it could all go back just by an hour. The clouds just kept rolling. 
He picks up a bottle and lights a match.
“This can’t be happening.” A teardrop nearly flicks out the match, but he gathers his strength, and places it by the newspaper wick. The paper flares alive in caution orange.
Shu breathes in. You see his face is scrunched up from crying even as he tries to aim, and it’s like he’s aged years in a matter of minutes. His face has never truly been clean of dirt or gore in weeks, just like the rest of you, but even under the orange fire his eyes go dull. There’s weight under his eyelids, and his mouth is forced into a tight, shaky frown as he exhales.
“I’m so sorry.” Even when it was a zombie Shu always apologized before killing. He treats it as a blessing of what they once were. “I’m so, so sorry. I’m so sorry it had to be this way.”
Shu throws the molotov. 
You lose track of Mysta’s silhouette as the townhouse goes up in flames.

The death of Mysta Rias was the death of the sun, and the world has been even drearier than the desolate land would have you think. 
Everyone lives on edge frostily. It’s barely been a month since he passed, but the wound hesitates to close. 
Ike is maybe the best adapted to your band of six now as five, but even then you can tell he’s not the same. He’s a champion of reservation. Every sweep of his knives into dead flesh are purposeful, every word spoken is calculated. 
You think back on that night you cried in Ike’s arms the first time you confirmed the dead. You still haven’t seen him cry. Strange, since he was the type to get emotional at sappy movies and video games before the first outbreak. You’re worried, but he insists he can keep it together. To be fair, he’s doing an excellent job at not having a conniption, but the way that he acts so much more emotionally distant isn’t exactly inspiring confidence either.
But Vox, for all he puffs himself up about making sure no man gets left behind and all that heroic junk, hesitates far more than his honed swordsmanship would have you think now that Mysta’s gone. It hasn’t gotten in the way of surviving yet, but you have to wonder when it will. He’s gotten indecisive and requires time to think- great for planning, not so much for a live-or-die fight. 
Luca’s the one that surprises you. You wouldn’t go so far as to call him happy when your band of friends started roaming the country together, but he was good natured, and was the first to pick himself up from a bad scrape. He had a sly, sideways curve to his lips whenever he laughed, but it’s been so long since you’ve heard it that you’re starting to forget the way his skin curves into smile lines. 
He doesn’t smile at all, really. As optimistic Luca was, it was no secret Mysta was the other half of the laughter in your group, and now that Mysta was gone the morale was as well. Luca keeps up his positive attitude as much as he can but it’s rare, and it’s quiet when you see it. 
You notice whenever someone lights the campfire, he’s never around to watch it, and no one makes him do it. You don’t think anyone’s ever talked about it out loud, nor has he ever let himself show it. But when he turns around to feel the warmth, Vox is always to his front, blocking off the bright blazes, and sits by him while he cooks game. You have a theory Vox hasn’t given up his hero complex yet, but for as tense as he gets by the fire Luca hasn’t had a breakdown yet either. Unless things change, you won’t bring it up. Your group has never experienced a loss quite like this in the zombie apocalypse, and all things considered, for as awful as the morale it could be much, much worse.
Speaking of much worse, Shu…
He was a wreck when Mysta passed away, and that’s putting it lightly. When you ran from the remains of the burning townhouse and into a forest, your footfalls were punctuated by Shu’s shortened breaths, and he held back hiccups as you left Mysta behind. By the time Vox figured you were safe from the horde and Ike’s feet gave out from exhaustion, Shu’s eyes were shut tight in disbelief. 
You barely uttered a word to him before he fell back into sobs, and when you offered a hand he threw himself to you. It was disorienting. You always considered Shu the face of serenity and restraint even in your lives before the apocalypse, and after the outbreak he was always the one that could find the best path to follow for the greater good of all six of you. But now there were only five, and the grief was fresh.
But Shu howled. He clawed himself against your chest in inconsolable wails, and his face was contorted, sore and raw red in splotches of unmuted primality, nearly unrecognizable. There was an animal in your arms. Agonized. 
“It’s not possible,” he heaved. His articulation was lost in his eruption. “It can’t be, it can’t be, it can’t be, it can’t be!”
You didn’t have any words to say, and clearly Shu didn’t either. He howled again as his bestial hands clutched around your arm. Nails dug through his gloves and into your skin, and if he clutched you any tighter he’d tear the flesh off the bone straight, a creature of despair. Screaming and howling, and soon enough he was choking on his own spit and the block of mourning in his throat, some ugly peals of tears and snot, and the remains of rot on his hands and blood against the hollows of his ghastly cheek; the ash left in his lungs and the smoke that lingered in his hair, and the flames that licked through his fingers and inside the bottle and outside the glass; the blazes that ate through the wood of the house, the very same hue as his brother’s favorite shirts, his hat, flickering a cycle of brightness and color and roiling heat until he knew the fire had swallowed up what remained of Mysta.
Shu had no choice but to scream. When his throat took away that privilege he mustered up what he could of his vocal chords and churned. All his mouth went dry but he still smacked his tongue against his gums and huffed out seethings and surges of thin breath through gritted teeth, more akin to wheezing than anything else he’d howled but the pure distress gone untouched.
He eventually exhaled himself into an uneasy sleep, but even in sleep his face was still struck with suffering. Rest was more like a pause to a realized horror than it was a reprieve. You and Ike cleaned him up and laid him sideways on the ground for the night- after all, it had been an awful day, and as the moon rose in the sky you know you wouldn’t be getting anywhere after the horrible events, much less with an unconscious Shu.
Luca spent the rest of his day detached from his own experience, even after the shock wore off. When Shu’s composure broke, Vox had attended to Luca, and they quietly wept together while Shu bawled. By the time Shu began to rest, Luca looked into the ground, water bottle in hand.
Vox approached you while Ike started a fire and prepared some rations for the rest of the group. “He’s not taking things awfully, but I’m concerned for him,” he said. “Luca, I mean.”
“I know you mean Luca,” you responded. You couldn’t hide your own exhaustion from the day either. 
“As much as I hate to say it, Shu freaking out was to be expected. He and- and Mysta- those two- they were so close. And Luca, too. I thought he would freak out like Shu, but hell, Reader, I cried more than him. I know I get emotional and he’s better at keeping it down than me, but…”
Vox’s eyelids fluttered as he looked up at the dark sky. His eyes were red. “I’m just concerned, that’s all. It’s not like him.”
“Well, living without-” Your exhaustion dragged down your sentence before you could finish it. You thought you were well-adjusted to the death, but your voice caught before you could utter his name. You cleared your throat. “Living like this. There’s going to be a lot of weird changes, and everyone mourns differently.”
“I suppose you’re right.” But Vox didn’t look too pleased to hear that. “We need to protect him.”
“He does plenty of protecting himself. And we look out for each other regardless.”
“Then we should look out for him especially.”
“Of course. I don’t want him to get overexerted.”
“And let’s tap out of any interaction if we can, including looting. Last thing we need is to get into another big fight with the zombies, or worse yet, other survivors.”
“Avoiding fights has always been our M.O.” A chilled breeze ran through the forest. Vox fiddled with his haori. You stared right through him. “Sorry if this comes across as weird. But do you really think laying low is a good idea?”
“It’s dangerous to let anything interfere with us.”
“We’re in the zombie apocalypse, Vox, everything is dangerous. It’s not like I can just wave a wand and poof, we’re immune from the plague. Besides, we’re just two out of s- out of five. We’ll figure it out when it’s not so late, and Luca and Shu are in working condition.” You squinted. “Hey. Enough about them for a second. Has anyone ever asked you if you’re okay, Vox?”
“This isn’t about me.”
“Is now. How are you holding up?”
“What, do you want me to lie to your face? No one’s doing well.” He averted his eyes, and you knew he was averting the question. “I could ask you the same thing. Shu was intense.”
“Tired,” you said. “Just plain tired. I don’t even think I have the energy to properly grieve.” And just like the man standing before you, you averted your eyes as well. “I don’t think I want to either. I don’t know. I miss him a lot, but I don’t have the time to miss him. Not when the apocalypse is literally unfolding in front of us and there’s people taking the brunt of the loss way harder than I am. I wish I could give him the remembrance he deserves.”
Vox nodded slowly. He didn’t say anything in response, and the silence made you feel like you aged hundreds of years in his presence. 
“You’re very observant, Reader,” he finally said. “And you spend a lot of time making your own conclusions before you act. That’s smart. But knowing too much prevents you from action, full stop.”
Campfire smoke curls around the chilly air and by Vox’s face. His head was still angled up to look at the sky, and the orange glow against his sharp features weathered him into a dreary oil painting. There was a gash between his cheek and ear where a tree branch hooked him while he evaded a zombie’s grapple, and the light illuminated the soft pink flesh exposed under the cut of skin. The corner of the gash met his thoughtful frown. “Every moment of life teaches you something. I’m wondering when it’ll be too much and we simply can’t go on the way we used to.”
“Might be soon.”
“Today definitely sped it along.”
The fire crackled. You and Vox sat there unmoving, too focused on the blaze and how controlled it was compared to the townhouse. 
Even as the tinder burns, your thoughts were still so awry now that the group got smaller. Vox had a point about Luca. You needed to keep an eye out on him in case he’s putting on a brave front. Even then, you didn’t like how Vox deflected your concern, but prodding him would only make it worse, especially when the loss was so fresh. 
Your thoughts drifted to Ike, and how you haven’t managed to share a word with him at all since the townhouse burning. He hasn’t cried, you recall, not a single time since the first outbreak. You admired his composure but now that Vox admitted his own fears for the others (and neglected to tell you the ones about himself), you can’t help the unease that settled into your stomach. What were his thoughts like? Everything went off the rails whenever you tried to collect yourself, but if Ike was able to keep it all under wraps, then his mind must be a storm.
Speak of the devil. Ike hands Luca a small can of beans, but the blond stayed by his lonesome. Your best friend took the empty seat beside you, and gives you and Vox your dinner.
You thanked him, and after savoring what little you had of your portion, you asked how he’s doing.
“Just gotta get through another day,” Ike responded. 
Then he tipped the last of his beans into his mouth and stared at the fire, just as you did after talking with Vox. He was unreadable as ever, but the only thing you could glean from him with confidence is that he had just as much on his mind as you thought. Maybe even more.
You wished he would just tell you.

But grass grows over graves, and even if Mysta didn’t have a proper send off, time waits for no one. 
Once Shu woke up, his face was a mess of bleariness and exhaustion. Something in his bright eyes froze over during the night. Amethyst faded to plastic. 
“We’ll keep moving,” he declared, and his voice chilled you to the core. He called out the order as a leader, not a friend, without the care or delicacy he always granted to your group. His emotion died with Mysta. 
(And you saw Vox ready himself to refute, but once he met those purple eyes filled with something unearthly, he shank under Shu’s presence.)
Days pass. All of them are spent on the road. The group spends as little time resting as possible just to get a few extra miles out to your next destination. 
Shu and Luca say it’s to get away, but they end the sentence differently. Shu says to get away from the zombies. Luca doesn’t finish his thought at all. 
It’s no surprise that Vox opposes it. The more distance between the group and the townhouse, the more he speaks his mind. 
But Shu is determined to go further, just as much as Vox is convinced everyone needs to lay low.
And in all the time you’ve known these men, you’ve never seen any of them fight against one another quite like this. Vox always concedes, but not before Shu spits venom and he flings it right back. Their words are always about the plan, their future, where the group is going and why don’t they wait out the zombies instead of these hourly skirmishes on the road; but everyone can tell there’s more lying in subtext than the literal argument. You’ve seen the way Vox grits his teeth and musters up his courage whenever he’s about to tell Shu off, and you know that disgusted glare Shu gives Vox whenever he brings up hiding from the zombies.
Ike usually ends up being the one to break up their fights. One dismal evening while he lectured them both about teamwork and other platitudes, you and Luca sat next to each other. He’s a big guy, but he’s lost a lot of weight from rationing, and his expression looks like an abandoned dog more often than not these days.
He talks quietly, but plainly. “Shu hates me, doesn’t he?”
“What?” The bluntness startles you. “Luca, listen to yourself. He could never.”
“He could.”
“He wouldn’t,” you insist. “He’s gone through a lot, and he’s not taking it well, but I know it’s always because he wants to protect you. All of us.”
“So is Vox. But he just shuts him down without a thought. You ever wonder why, Reader?”
“To get away from the zombies,” you recite. That’s always his reasoning. Staying put in one place just means more time for zombies to gather at the scent of the living.
“So would finding a secure shelter, like how Vox says.” Luca sits with his knees close to his chest, and watches from a distance at the quelled fight. Vox says something, and you can see Shu’s face contort even though you can’t hear what he says. “But he doesn’t even listen to him. He doesn’t even listen to you, Reader, when you try to break it up.” He holds his legs closer to himself. “I don’t know if he’s ever listened to me. Or anyone.”
“He would if you told him you feel like that. He’d understand.”
“Would he really?” You nearly answer that before you realize the question is rhetorical. “You’ve got eyes, Reader. Be attentive like how I know you always are and look at how he looks at us. Me and Vox.”
You try to follow Luca’s request but Ike is speaking, and Shu’s eyes close.
He elaborates. “It’s not a nice look.”
“He’s stressed.”
“Then why doesn’t he ever look at you like that? Or even better, why does he listen to Ike only, and how come it never seems to stick?”
“He’s going through a lot.”
“We all are.”
Across the camp, you watch Ike run a hand through his hair. Shu is still talking, and Vox sighs.
“I think he blames us.”
You grab Luca’s arm. “Don’t say that.”
“Why not? It’s obvious anyways.”
“Because that’s our friend.”
“He hasn’t acted like one for a long time.”
“Because he’s lost so much.”
“We were all friends,” Luca snaps. “We lost just as much. Hell! I was in the house! We were together! And then we got separated, and unlike someone Vox actually tried to help him out until- and I should’ve- we saw him get bit, and I couldn’t- I just, I-”
Luca shuts himself up. Your hand falls from his arm to his palm and squeezes. No life returns your gesture. 
You sit in the stagnant silence. 
“I’m sorry.” Luca lowers his head. His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows. “I shouldn’t have said that.”
“Get it off your chest, Luca. I won’t hurt you.”
“No, I don’t think I should.” He unwraps his legs, and stands up from the ground beside you. “I’m not going to say it and be an awful friend, even if he’s acting like one.”
Before you could ask what the hell that was supposed to mean, Luca already turned his back, and you sat alone from the argument as he walked away from everything.

Despite all their bickering, Shu and Vox lead the group through travel. It’s more likely that the bickering is the exact reason why. The fire iron and rebar push aside the greenery, until Vox stops with his rebar casting the brush aside. “Fucking finally.”
You catch up and look across the hill. Buildings. This used to be a small rest town in a clearing between the hills before the outbreak, but now the bright signs are dimmed out and dirtied. Not a soul lurks in the abandoned town, including the dead. 
“We’re not stopping,” Shu says.
“Piss off, Shu. I’m tired.”
“You’re never going to be well-rested.”
“Then how does safe sound?”
“Not possible no matter where you go.”
“But safer than on the road-”
“Guys,” Ike interrupts. “Quit acting like toddlers.”
Vox pouts and Shu squints. None of the three want to get the next word in.
So you speak up instead. “We’re running out of supplies. If we don’t find any more food soon, then we won’t even be able to continue on the road.”
“Reader has a point,” Ike agrees.
Shu’s expression sours. “Fine. We’ll look around, but make it quick. Camping out here is a great way to get robbed.”
“Then we’ll move together and keep watch for one another,” Vox declares, and he smiles. “Welcome to the correct side, Reader, Ike. It’s good to have you on board.”
Ike rolls his eyes. “Don’t drag me into your petty fights.” You fight the urge to quip he’s already in the mess as the mediator.
But the group traverses the hills and enters the remains of the town. The ground is littered with garbage strewn about in the haste for its citizens to flee town- or for the ill-fated, become the corpses dragging along the cement. 
The zombies here shamble along independent from one another. That’s the best you could ask for. The only consistent thing about zombie behavior is their danger when in swarms. Alone, they’re nothing but fetid flesh barely clinging onto the skeleton, ready to fall into a hundred pieces at one strike, but when accompanied by others? Fodder makes up for each others’ weaknesses, and no matter how competent or skilled you are, one human is nothing to a crowd of zombies on the warpath. 
The zombies of this town haven’t synced up with one another, and you’d like to keep it that way. While on the road, you’ve had plenty of skirmishes with small groups of zombies, but the last time your band faced off against a proper herd, you lost one. 
A single zombie clambers to the front of your group. You hear metal against fabric as Ike pulls out his cleaver from its sheath, ready to do the deed, but before he can advance Shu already has his fire poker in his hands and the business end driven through the eyes of the zombie. He twists, assuring the brain is too punctured to allow the body to rise again, and the poker is back at rest. He barely even apologizes to the body as everyone trudges on.
Behind his back, Ike resheathes his weapon. He squints through his glasses, and you can read the confusion between his green eyes. Ike doesn’t meet your glance, but his expression is welcome, as unfortunate as it is. At least you’re not the only one that noticed how out of character Shu has been lately. You’re getting a sinking feeling about him.
However, the moment passes as soon as it appeared, and you and the rest of your friends rove onwards until you come across a set of stairs erring into the earth, surrounded by a dirtied glass entrance. 
“Who would’ve thought?” You wonder aloud. “I never would’ve guessed this little town had a subway system.”
Vox raises his hand along the cool glass. “This could be good. The entrance is camouflage pretty well considering the damage of this town, and there might be some preserved food in vending machines. All we need to do is break ‘em.”
“And if there isn’t any food, it’s still a big area,” Ike adds. “Plenty of space and a roof over our heads.”
Luca looks down the staircase. It’s dark, but not unnavigable. The edges of the sidewalk are lined with yellow paint stripes, and features small lights along the walls from a backup generator, most likely. “It’s a good hiding place,” he says.
Luckily for everyone, Shu can already tell he’s defeated, and doesn’t put up much of a fight before you all descend down the stairs. 
Not even ten minutes later Luca found a vending machine and smashed it apart with his spiked bat. Vox unwrapped a pack of Oreos with a smug smile. 
The subway was no longer in operation and the trains themselves were abandoned, but you found a sign with a map of the station. The subway connected the major areas of the town together, and could be used as secret passages through the ruins.
And most interesting, there were even less zombies underground than under the sun. 
“I wonder if the stairs confused them?” Luca says to himself. “Surely a few of them figured it out, since we killed some since we entered the subway, but it might be too complex for herds to come through. Or the architecture itself is confusing.”
You weren’t about to question it. This was one of the most peaceful environments you’ve entered since the outbreak, and there was no way you would ignore the moment to catch your breath, even if you can still cut through the tension with a knife. 
You enter first watch with the drifting bond between everyone on your mind, and when Ike relieves you for his watch, you fall asleep in record time.

An arm jostles you awake. “Reader. Wake up, zombies.”
You curse, albeit a little groggily, but in a flash you’re on your feet. You thumb under your sleeping pad and grab your climbing picks. “I thought we were safe?”
“Not at all.” Your eyesight adjusts after you start walking, but you can already recognize the voice as Ike. Out of the corner of your eye you can spot Shu trying to shake Luca awake, and Vox gathering everyone’s things together. “They’re flooding in fast. Herds of them. Like they’re all on the same wavelength.”
“Like the townhouse.”
It dawns on you and you say it without thinking. Ike’s shoulders freeze over. “Don’t say that. Not so loudly.”
“Fine. What do you need me to do?”
“Get your things together. They’re not here yet, but they will be soon, around the corner we came.”
Vox approaches halfway through zipping a backpack together. “We should take the next right corridor. I remember that leads to a different exit.”
“You sure it’s not the same one the zombies are coming in through?” You ask.
“Positive.”
“We need to stay ahead of the herd,” Shu said, Luca in tow. “No fighting unless absolutely necessary. If we get started now we should be able to get away without overexerting ourselves. Ready?”
No words need to be exchanged. You leave the clearing just as you found it. 
A collected groan follows behind you, and a chill runs down your spine. You’ve never heard so many zombies, and never so man all in harmony. The moans arrange together in the cavernous halls, bouncing off the cement and down the station. 
The urgency rises once the cries grow closer. Vox breaks out in a run, then Luca, and Shu behind him. 
“Right,” Vox calls, and dives at the turn. A zombie greets him. He drives his rebar into its head and flings it away without a second thought like a lancer. 
The zombie smashes against a sight with arrows to different stations. Ike swerves out of the way. “Fork ahead, where now?”
“Right? I mean-” He goes one way to view a sign, then sprints the other. “Straight! Straight!”
The dead sing. You can’t think to look back but the smell of rot is suffocating.
Your foot falls under the concrete ground in time with your family, and in time with the stumbling zombies approaching faster than you’ve ever felt before. 
Luca halts in his tracks, and you thump against his back. Your mouth parts to speak but your eyes fall upon the exit.
Or rather, the lack of exit.
Boulders of broken concrete hide the stairwell from daylight.
Hot breath strangles you, and you turn with your picks in hand. Swathes of the dead are fixated on your group. 
Ike runs straight-on to the choir. You scream out as one reaches for him before he turns at the last fork in the road.
You cut your scream off halfway when you follow him without a second thought. 
A hand covered in dirt and mold grasps against the sleeve of your jacket. You swivel and sink your pick into the limb, and the wrist pops off under your blade. The hand goes limp and falls from the fabric.
You hear footsteps behind you, and when Luca speaks up you’re full of relief even if only for a moment. “What now?”
“Just run,” You say back, more of a guess than an order.
Shu drifts in front of you. “Where are we?”
“Give me a moment, I’m trying to think!”
“We don’t have time, Vox!”
“I know, Shu, shut up!”
“Going left!” Ike shouts, and you all move without question. 
But you realize only after the zombies cut away the turn that the station turns more decrepit on this side. The tunnels are lined with debris and the floor crumbles away along the painted stripes. 
And before you can find a new route, you see a puff of dust from the ceiling.
“The roof!” You shout. You’re gasping to breathe now, and your words stumble upon the exhale. 
Shu’s eyes roll up to the flickering light, and you both see the elongated crack above your heads. It’s been in decay for years. How unlucky. How simply, brutally, lethally unlucky.
“Hurry!” He pleads. He’s at the front of the pack, followed by Vox and Luca alongside each other. Ike trails behind you. 
The crack in the roof follows your every footstep even as ancient instinct kicks in. Adrenaline shoots through your veins and pushes you forward, accompanied by bits of debris tangling in your hair. The flooring turns from concrete to tile, and with the dirtied mosaic comes a glimmer of hope. Surely you must be going the right way.
The zombies’ cries are loud, but the squeak of your shoe against the tiles is louder. There must be something beyond.
But the ceiling splintering out is the loudest of all.
It all happens at once:
The way that Shu turns at the sound and can’t even get one of his own out before he sees your face-
The powdered cement turning to hail in the blink of an eye-
Your war cry through gritted teeth as you launch off, the fastest you’ve ever run before-
A knife unsheathed in in warmth and frigidity in your midst-
Luca, hated, blamed, petrified. 
Your brain catches up through the curtain of scrap. It’s all because of Luca. Even at his most vulnerable, you’ve never thought of him as weak. Nonetheless, his eyes are dead purple crusted against his ghost-white face, and his lips force open while a vein along his neck strains to scream out your name, but he lets out just one small, throaty heave. A miserable noise.
It silences you. 
You know it, and he does too. A chunk of ceiling drops mere inches from your last step. Vox approaches, calls out your name before he’s even comprehended the truth before him. You see the dark in his pale eyes tighten into a thin reptilian pupil and he reaches out in desperation.
The last of the ceiling shatters. A broken crag hammers into his palm instead. All you hear is Shu finally get out the scream before the remains of the underground roof shuts you out from your family.
The dead rises in volume. The glimmer of hope evaporates.
You force yourself against the barricade, but your weight is no match for the pile of rubble, and you watch the zombies shamble forward with your back against the wall. The only person you have left brushes plaster away from his eyes with one arm and brandishes a knife in the other.
Ike Eveland looks like hell alive. 
It would almost be hilarious if you weren’t facing a subterranean grave. His face is dirtied with mud and rubble, and the legs of his trousers are matted in blood, rot, and dirt, but even then, this is still your best friend. The years you’ve spent alongside him blend together. His once-delicate hands now bear countless scars from travel and fights, but the contours of his face are recognizable even through the dust that mars his skin. 
This is an unwinnable situation. You’re locked in checkmate, but Ike stands next to you.
You speak. “No more exits, right?”
Ike swipes at his face again, and the sleeve of his mantle comes back grayer than before. “I think we both know how this ends, Reader.”
“Yeah. I do.”
You both watch the leading zombie shuffle one foot forward, and each of its followers mimic the motion. 
You notice Ike’s hand against his face out of the corner of your eye. Then how his shoulders jerk up for a moment, before setting themselves in place, stony and rigid. 
His words break your heart. “I don’t know what to do.”
“Me neither.”
“I wish I could refuse all this- all this-” 
He sniffs. 
You move without thinking, and your mind is set. You wrap your arms around Ike. 
He doesn’t even raise his hands. He just leans against your shoulder lifelessly, and lets the tears fall. 
You rub his back as he hiccups into your shirt. How long has he been keeping this locked up? You ache for him and all his repression as his body goes limp against yours, the only thing keeping him standing. 
“It’ll be okay.” That’s only a lie you can hope is the truth. “After all this. We’ll be okay. Shu and Vox and Luca, too. It’s a straight shot now that all the zombies are on us.”
“I’m going to miss you. All of you.”
“We’re together.”
“I’m sorry this is how it ends.”
“We still have options.”
He scoffs, even as his voice cracks through his quiet crying. “We’re trapped, Reader. There’s no way out.”
“We can still go out on our terms,” you say. You place your hand over his, the one that holds the knife. “Once we’re gone, the zombies are going to search for the other three.”
You squeeze one last time, and break away from the hug. You look upon the wave of dead flesh and rot, and draw your weapons. “I don’t want them to fight any more than they have to.”
“That’s hopeless.”
“It’s all I can do.”
“How are you so calm about this?”
“I’m not sure myself,” you admit. “It’s just that right now, I know I’m in a losing battle, and I accept that. But I don’t accept just laying down and dying like that.” 
Your climbing picks cross together as you ready your eerily still mind. The blades scrape against each other. Metal sings. “And I just want to handle things calmly. After all this time, I learned that from you.”
“I don’t know how you can just remember things like that when we’re about to die.”
“I suppose I only die on my own terms. Hey.”
Ike stumbles to his feet. His knife is pointed to the ground. With a tranquility that evaded you all throughout the apocalypse, you steady his posture and guide the blade up to the dead beyond.
Your hand rises up his arm as his eyes close, and he silently murmurs to himself. You rub his shoulder. “You good?”
Ike exhales. His body lowers as he does, and with the breath comes a relaxed posture. This is the most at peace he’s been since the outbreak strangled the past world. 
His eyelashes rise. Stormy green seas focus upon the staggering zombies. 
“No.” Ike’s lip trembles. But he’s set on the zombies ahead, and a bolt of lightning crosses through his eyes. “But I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Good man.”
“There’s about five of them leading the pack in that corner. We can pick them off and get some more breathing room.”
“Understood, Mr. Tactical.”
“Don’t call me that.” Under the exhaustion and the fear and the grittiness that comes with crying, you hear some of that classic, joking exasperation. You snicker to yourself, but the bittersweet smile remains. 
“Mr. Eveland, then.” Your sight hones in on one zombie to your right. Its jaw slides apart as it follows the scent of the fresh living. “It’s been an honor, Ike.”
“Likewise, Reader, we’ll do what we can.”
“Let’s go.”
At your command, you both launch off, laser-focused on the individual dead. 
Ike kicks a corpse down to knock it prone, then rakes his knife into the skull, and that’s all you can see before you throw yourself into the fray.
A one-on-one is simple. The zombie in front of you holds out a decrepit hand, perfect for your climbing pick to detach. It stumbles at the force and grants you an opening to clobber its brain in.
Rinse and repeat. 
You dive between the steps of your latest kills to divert attention in time to slay another and stay moving. The trick is to use gravity to your advantage. They aren’t smart enough to stand their ground, and when they inevitably fold from the pressure of your picks, it’s like the zombies present themselves for you can finish the job.
The next target swipes at you. You jut one pick down upon the corpse and one more meets the brittle skull. This gives you enough time to duck under a lunge, sweep the leg, and aim to kill. 
Something grabs your leg before you plunge the pick in. A body, dismembered from the waist up. 
You yelp as yellow-black teeth rise, and frantically kick. The zombie holds on tight, but when you regain your senses, it doesn’t even see the blade incoming before the soft brain squashes in. Splatters of gore and bits of chunky nerve endings sprays against your frame while your sweat mixes in with the stench of rot and muddy mildew.
You step back to reposition. Ike’s clothing is covered in blackened blood, and you watch him plunge his knife into the chests of whatever unfortunate beast approaches next. He twists and yanks out, then goes in for a final blow between the eyes. He has a rhythm established despite the shades of rot against his mantle and shirt. It almost looks routine. 
His next victim’s head rolls to the ground and breaks apart like porcelain. The brain is still in place, but the elongated gash through the nervous system confirms it would never rise again. 
But one gets the jump on Ike while his back is turned, and he yells out as he thrashes. He swivels on his heel. The zombie maneuvers around even as his hands push back in a fierce gridlock. It snaps its broken jaws in Ike’s face as it snarls, and sinks its claws in. Gunk travels through its saliva.  
“I got your back!” While Ike retreats, you trip the dead that crawls in front of you, and dash to his side. You drag your picks into the nape and back of the zombie’s head, and the creature goes limp just in time for Ike to shove it against the wall. 
Ike catches his breath, brushes his hand against his arm, and meets your concerned look with a nod in silent gratitude. “They’re gaining on us,” he says. “You don’t need to kill all of them, disabling them is fine!”
“Got it!”
But even that is easier said than done. There are so many zombies in the herd, it looks like you haven’t even left a dent, and your space is getting limited. You hack through the edges of the herd and pray that your wild swipes cut through a limb or two. 
“We’re losing turf!”
“Yeah, and I- gaah!”
Ike heaves. Your switch flips from ‘kill zombies’ to ‘check Ike’.
You follow his rasp to the corner of the room, where the ceiling crashed down. His back is pressed against the tiled wall, and he struggles to peel off his mantle. 
You don’t even need to ask. His hand clutches his arm, and the chunk of flesh missing from it. 
“Holy shit, Ike!” You can’t even mute yourself. Millions of warning bells go off in your head. The internals are coated in a dark membrane from where it meets the oxygen in the air, less red than it is purple, and his veins beside the mutilation rise in an ugly green. 
You reach your hands out as you rip off a cut of fabric from your sleeve. “No. No, this can’t be happening-“
He slaps your hand away before you can begin to bandage the blood loss, and immediately crumples. “Don’t do that! It’s the virus!”
“There’s no way it spreads that fast-“
“It will. I don’t want you to have that.” Ike sucks in air through his teeth as he sinks to the floor. 
“How did you even-“ you cut yourself off. “It was the zombie that jumped you, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah. I didn’t even notice the pain when it happened.” He curses in his native language. The green in his veins rise, and branches sprout from the veins under his graying skin, like tree bark. The rapid decay of the outbreak. “Oh, that’s not good.”
The din of the battle behind you is entirely forgotten as you focus on the uneven flesh, the imprint of the bite upon his mangled arm, how nearly every level of the wound has turned to the same rot of the zombies. 
Ike’s breathing is labored. The center of his shirt is soaked with the rot of those he killed, and rises and falls shakily. 
He smacks his lips, and you’re struck with the realization that talking is a strain. “I have a favor to ask of you.”
You crouch by his side and nod. 
“The sheath, on my belt,” he says. “Can you unfasten it?”
You comply without question even through your blurring eyes. I can’t refuse a request from a dead man, you think, and then the weight of your thought slams you. 
Ike’s unscathed hand rises from the wound, coated in slick purple gore, and brushes against the handles of his knives. The membrane pools together into beads along the handle. His fingers stop at the last slot in his sheath, and the tip of the cleaver is dyed in the beginnings of the rot. 
You think you’re about to vomit your heart out. 
“No.” Your voice wavers. “No. No, I can’t do this.”
“You can,” Ike comforts you, and you feel even more like trash. You should be the one comforting him instead. “I trust you.”
And that’s what gets the tears to spill out from your eyelashes. “But I can’t kill you.”
“You said it best earlier. Dying on your own terms, right?”
“But I can’t kill you.”
“I don't want to be one of them,” he admits. “Look around, Reader, we’re surrounded, and we both know there’s no way out. And being one of them, it’s unnatural. It’s just messed up. If I’m going to die, I want to know I’m at rest. None of this- whatever all this is.”
His head lolls to the side. “And I want to see Mysta again.”
The chorus of the dead accompanies Ike’s heavy breathing and your weeping. You are a helpless child. 
“I’ll help you,” Ike adds. “I’ll tell you how I usually confirm the dead. You’re my best friend. I trust you.”
It sickens you. 
You let out a puff of air as you draw your palm over your eyes. The gore across your face smears over with your tears. 
You take the cleaver in your hands. 
“Thank you.”
“You deserve better than this.”
“It’s the best we can do. I’m glad.”
“This is so fucked up.” You draw the cleaver with both hands, as if that would end the shaking. Even as you shut your eyes, you can’t get your resolve in place. 
“The trick is to be fast,” Ike says, and it disgusts you at how easily he says it. It disgusts you even more when you know the decay is spreading as he speaks, all the way into his raspy voice. “It’s all in the wrist. That’s what keeps it precise instead of clumsy. It’s where all the force is. Don’t swing wide. Just center it where you want to hit. How are you doing?”
“Not good.” Your breathing deepens, a last-ditch effort to remain calm. “I’m scared.”
You force your eyes open. The world floods in white, then falls into the blurred grays of the subway station. 
Ike is already so much worse for wear. The bite is entirely blackened, and the discolored skin stretches from his arm to his shoulder, creeping along what little you can see of his neck. 
His eyelids are shut, gentle aside from the furrow in his brow. 
“Me too.”
Even with his feigned nonchalance, there is so much sorrow laced between his words. 
“I’m going to miss you.”
“I’ll be safer,” Ike says, and even he doesn’t seem so convinced by it. “Thank you for everything. I’ll miss you too.”
“You’ll always be my best friend.” 
You raise the cleaver. 
“Please tell Mysta I’m thinking of him. We all are, always.”
“We’ll be watching.”
Ike’s head is lowered, but you still see his attempt at a smile. 
You black out as you swing.
There is no memory left of his last moment. It’s all too much to bear. 
You cover your face, because looking at him is simply- just- too- much. Blood mixes in with your eyelashes, and you taste metal on your lips. 
You don’t even have the energy to scream, or cry, or do anything. You are a husk, and you do not hear Ike’s cleaver clatter to the floor. There is nothing. 
Your body moves without your command. You step back, and even though you refuse to look, you know you’re backing away from Ike. Your heart hammers, and so do your limbs. It spreads in droves, this pressure of heartbreak, constricting you and squeezing you apart.
Daggers fall into your skin. You snap out of your stupor. 
But once you identify the daggers as teeth, you wish you didn’t.
You tear your hands away from your face as a glob of rot (his rot, you realize, and you can’t even begin to wrap your head around that) flicks out in an arc. The hammering- it’s claws raking against your flesh and tearing you apart like meat.
While you accompanied Ike in his last moments, the outbreak stopped for no one, least of all you. You are no invulnerable main character. You blocked out the roaring chorus as he lay, but it continued outside of your little bubble, and with your back turned they absorbed the last of your free space for a perfect siege. 
You veer your head away out of instinct when the teeth pull away, and takes a bite of muscle out with it. The pain is blinding hot- you finally regain your voice in time to screech, but it drowns out through the zombie moans. 
A second set of jaws snaps you up. Already your head is spinning, and when you see the sinew from the corner of your vision you resist the urge to faint. If you take a look at the broken skin and extruding vine-veins again, you know you’re going to black out again, and never wake up. 
You force your sight to anything else. 
You make the mistake of looking into zombie eyes for the third time in your life. 
But this time you don’t retain the memory, either. Because for as little time you have left, how could you live knowing that your best friend’s peaceful green eyes snapped open in terror in his final moment? 
You choke out, and whether it’s from pain or grief or pure fear, you can’t even tell. Just that it all mixes together into a toxic blend, the poison of your undoing. 
And to think, you had the gall to meet such a grisly end head-on minutes ago. 
On the ground, next to his limp foot, the steel edge of Ike’s cleaver winks at you. 
It’s all in the wrist, he told you, and your blood burns into dust. But Ike is gone, now, and for as horrified as his melted remains were, he was certainly watching your every move. 
And the infection is unnatural, and climbs along your shoulder, and there is no agony in the world like this fate. 
And you wanted to see Mysta again. 
With the last of your strength you regain your legs, and kick off one zombie from your leg. It topples and gives you enough time to shake off another that has you grappled. 
The weight shift combined with your blood loss makes you hit the ground hard, but you scrape at the floor nonetheless. You are so weak, and you struggle, so focused on the glint of the blade that you ignore your skin crack apart like mud in a drought. 
You reach, bloodied and battered, and so close to rest. 
The washed light shines off the cleaver. Its reflection teases you as a monster snatches your foot and send you back into the horde like a toy. 
You emit your final scream, and that too dies as hundreds of hands hold you back. Your body and blood is swallowed by the herd of dead.
When you can’t keep your eyes open anymore, the dark in your mind rearranges to replicate the cleaver. Then it flattens, and you see the haunted remains of Ike Eveland between it. 
The only sound left is teeth meeting bone.

"Don't Look Down" Silks!Shorester
Warning! This scene could potentially show up in the fic, though it may be a little different, so minor spoilers for Silks and Lightning
You’re not sure why Gaster decided to tag along on the particular run Grillby had given you that evening. As far as runs go, it’s a simple one; take the plain bag to a specific location, find the keypad and drop it inside the container. But here he is, trailing after you as you make your way through the bustling streets. It’s nearing dusk and the evening crowds are in full swing. Checking your watch shows that the drop off spot is close and sure enough, you soon spot the building. It’s not the tallest one but still several stories high and about a block away. Time to get climbing. 
“I thought the whole point of me doing this was so you guys wouldn’t be seen dropping packages,” you say to him as you turn down an alley. Normally, you’d find a pipe to scale, but you’re not sure if Gaster would be able to keep up. The well dressed skeleton doesn’t peg you as one to regularly climb up buildings. There’s a ladder down this particular alley you’ve used before. It’s rusted, far beyond being up to code, but it’s served you before. 
“It’s important for Cinders not to be seen dropping packages,” he replies. “Besides, I’ve been curious about your process for runs for a while now.” 
“Well I can tell you I don’t usually spend this much time on the ground.” Ah there’s the ladder. You stop before it, tightening the straps of the backpack around your waist. You reach out and tug on the metal rung, which makes a grating noise, but holds. “All right then. Ready?”
Gaster’s red eyelights move up, up, up the ladder. “....Sure, why not?” 
That’s a good enough answer for you. You grip the ladder and start to climb. The texture is rough under your hands, rust making some of the edges sharp but compared to your usual ways of scaling buildings via window ledges and drain pipes, this is a cake walk. It’s not long before you reach the top of the building and hoist yourself up and over the ledge.  
Gaster takes a few more moments, moving slower than you. But once his skull pops up, he vaults over the edge with more agility than you would expect. He brushes his hands off, casually striding forward.
Alrighty then. 
The crossing is easier than most; down here, many of the buildings are so squished together it’s an easy process to either take the short jump down to the next building, or hoist yourself up when met with a higher wall. Gaster keeps up through it all, though he is oddly quiet. Focusing maybe. 
The first actual gap between the buildings comes up right as the lights of the city begin to overtake the fading violet of sunset. The rooftop you actually need is still one building down. You peer over the edge, the orange glow from the streets washing over your skin. A solid fall down but the distance across can’t be more than eight feet or so. A jump, but not the worst one you’ve made. Even better, there’s no lip to the roof, so you can give yourself a running start. 
Gaster makes a noise like clearing his throat. “So how do we get over this?” 
“We jump.” 
“....Right.” 
You glance at him. The lights in his eyes have shrunk to little pricks. Ah. “Not a heights guy?” 
He takes a long, deep breath. “Not anymore it seems.” 
There’s a flick of annoyance, tinged with pity. He had to know what he was getting into, following you up onto the rooftop, but even you understand that sometimes the vertigo of standing so far above the ground can seize you no matter how prepared you are. You could just tell him to wait here, but you don’t like to backtrack, just in case something is following.
“Hang on a sec,” you mutter, unbuckling your backpack and kneeling down. A quick dig and you’ve got the silver safety rope you keep on hand for emergencies. You look up at him, holding it up. “You can either go back, or I can use this to tether you to me. Which do you want to do?” 
It takes a him a moment to answer, with a visible effort to drag his eyes away from the glow of the street below. He blinks at your offer. “What if I were to fall?” 
“I’d catch you, duh.” You grin at him, hoping it helps to sooth the tightening anxiety you see around his sockets. “You’re a pain but I’m not gonna let you splat. Can you imagine the clean up?” 
There’s an odd expression on his face now. A grin, but one a little unsettlingly manic. “It’s quite the mess indeed.” 
You stand and gesture him close. “I’m guessing you’ve had a bad fall then,” you muse as you wrap the end of the rope around his waist a few times. Despite being a skeleton, there’s a little bit of mass to him, rather than just the space of an empty spine. Even so, he’s very thin and you give it a few extra loops to make sure it’s secure.
He doesn’t answer your question. Instead, he chuckles and lifts his brow. “You know your way around knots. Tie people up often?” 
You tug sharply on the rope, making him gasp quietly. “Don’t be gross or I will let you drop.” 
“Merely an observation,” he says mildly as you step back. He tugs on the rope himself as you swiftly wrap the other end around yourself and tie it up with a bowline knot before returning your backpack to it's place. 
“I’m a silks artist; of course I know knots. Can’t have the whole thing crashing down when I’m in the air. Now, are you going to keep stalling, or are we jumping?” 
He takes a deep breath, stepping to the side.
You gather up enough of the line to give yourself some slack, take a few steps back before bouncing on your heels. A moment of judging distance and then you run, feet tapping lightly on the rooftop before you give yourself a mighty push right on the edge. You sail forward, that terrifying weightlessness bringing the brightest grin to your face and then you’re on the other side, skipping forward with momentum. 
You spin, the adrenaline pumping blood through your veins like fire. “See!” You call over. “It’s just a leap, easy peasy!” 
Gaster’s sockets are wide, both hands clutching the rope. He cautiously edges forward, stare dropping to look at the five story drop. His skull is painted in the flickering light, like fire upon a stone.
“Hey.” You tug very lightly on the rope and he starts, head jerking up. “Don’t look down. Just look at me. I won’t let you fall.” 
He blinks once. Twice. He mutters something in that weird, glitchy language before he backs up and starts running. You brace yourself, arms lifting to catch him. He clears the gap easy and you grab him as he yelps and pitches forward. His fingers instinctively cling to you, gasping sharply.
You pat his back. “There you go! Not so bad, was it?” 
His laugh is strained. “I never want to do that again.” 
“Yeah, well, we’re gonna have to after the drop.” 
“....Stars damn it.” He’s still clinging to you. 
“Each time it gets easier, promise.” You let him cling. 
He lifts his skull, looking out over the city. It’s fully dark now and it glistens and sparkles with a magic all it’s own. “Well…I suppose the view is worth the terror.”
You follow his gaze. “It’s one of the reasons I do it,” you mutter. “Helps to clear your head, being up above it all.” 
“And you’re not scared of the fall?” 
“It’s not the fall I’m scared of.” It’s the landing. Returning back to reality. Up here, the problems are distant. 
Though, perhaps not so distant tonight. One of them is holding you, the grip now gentle. 
He smells nice. The thought hits you randomly, making the slow creep of color start up your face. “We gotta drop this,” you say loudly, clearing your throat and stepping back. “C’mon, plenty of time to enjoy the view later.” 
He releases you slowly and follows as you hurry your way over the rooftop.

In League With Dragons- Chapter 4

Logan glided low over the trees and landed about a mile away from the outskirts of the human city, dropping off Nico and Thomas with the promise that he would stay in the area, waiting for them to return. 
    “And please be careful, I—“
    “I know, Logan. We’ll be right back. Love you!” Thomas hugged Logan around the neck for a brief moment before he gestured for Nico to follow him towards the city. 
    The two of them hiked through the thinning underbrush before approaching a shoulder-height stone wall that appeared to surround nearly the entire city.
    “Come on, let’s walk around until we find the entrance,” Thomas said. The two of them walked another mile until they came to a wrought-iron gate with a single guard posted on the other side, their chin tucked down at their chest.
    “Excuse me?” Thomas called.
    The guard looked up, startled. “Eh? What are ya doin’ out there?”
    “We’re travellers, you see, and we wanted to come into the city to purchase supplies,” Thomas explained, not quite lying but certainly not telling the whole truth. “So may we come in? Just for the day, of course.”
    “I suppose so, but what have ya got to buy anythin’ with, if ya don’t mind me askin’?”
    “Oh, you know,” Thomas dug through his bag. “Just some things we’ve found on our travels.”
    Thomas dug through a small knitted drawstring bag he held at his hip and produced a small purple scale, about the size of his thumb, that Nico knew to be from Virgil, and the guard’s eyes widened. 
    “Why!” The guard exclaimed. “I've never seen such a thing! Where’d ya find a beauty like that?”
    “Oh, around. You can find all sorts of magnificent things when you look for them!” 
    “Aye, that’s a bit of wisdom,” the guard nodded as he opened the gates, the old rusted hinges squeaking like mice.
    “Thank you! Have a nice day,” Thomas waved. Nico just nodded at the man.
    “Aye, you too, lads.”
    Nico turned to look one last time at the lone guard, who had returned to leaning against the gatepost, looking barely awake. 
    Some guard, Nico thought. He didn’t even ask our names!
    Nico walked next to Thomas, having to walk a bit faster than normal to keep up with Thomas’s long strides. As the two got closer to the center of the city, the streets became more and more crowded with people going about their day. Nico had never truly been away from Ember’s Valley, and certainly not to such a large city! He looked around in awe of and studied the structures, each being three, four, even five floors tall, with real glass in the windows, not just a hole cut into the wall! In his town it would have been lucky if someone managed an attic with a ladder, but here? Everything was so tall!
    The sun shone down in the city, uninterrupted by either thick leaves or nets draped across the streets to protect from what Nico knew to now be a much smaller threat than anyone back in his town knew. 
    A thought suddenly crept into his mind as he walked between the towering buildings. 
    Maybe… maybe he could stay here! He could find some work, rent an apartment…! Of course Thomas and the dragons had been incredibly kind to him, but Nico still felt he wasn’t cut out to living in the wild, never staying in one place for long. He didn’t have any of the skills Thomas had, be it climbing or crafting, but perhaps here in the city he could make a living!
    He and Thomas entered the city square, a marketplace packed with stalls of vendors and customers. 
    “Here, first we find someone selling jewelry, because they usually want to buy the scales to make a necklace or something that they’ll sell for… a lot. A lot more than any scale is worth, and definitely more than anyone could pay for! I never understood why people want to buy scales for so much.”
    “I always thought it was because scales are so hard to get! Well, and capitalism,” Nico shrugged. “I didn’t know dragons even shed!”
    Thomas hummed and put a hand on Nico’s shoulder—that was another thing Nico appreciated about him, that ability to just casually touch someone and make them feel instantly calmer. Thomas removed his hand and began walking into the marketplace, Nico right beside him. 
    The two strolled past vendors of all kinds— some selling pottery on a blanket spread across the cobblestone, another with a vast array of candles and honey on a proper stall, another with giagantic hunks of goat’s cheese, and those were just the ones that caught his eye. 
    As the two walked deeper into the crowd, Nico’s breath hitched, becoming shakier as more people bumped into him. He looked back at one who had ran into his shoulder, and his vision seemed too swim before him, the crowded cobblestone street folding in on itself, the faces of the countless strangers all morphing into the same horribly familiar face- 
    Someone grabbed his wrist and Nico wrenched his hand away, a burning sensation lingering where he had been touched. 
    “Nico? Hey, are you alright?”
    He couldn’t have responded even if he knew what to say- it felt as if his teeth were glued shut and anything he said would come out sounding like a jumble of vowels without a single full word to be found. 
    “Hey, hey, you’re okay. Can I put my hand on your back?”
    Nico could barely move his head, but forced himself to give a slight nod yes. Then suddenly there was a soft hand on his shoulder, leading him away from the crowd. 
    Before he knew it, he was standing in an alleyway behind market stalls, alone with only Thomas. 
    “Nico, you’re shaking like a wet leaf! Do me a favor and name five things you can see.”
    It took a moment, but Nico felt finally able to articulate something. 
“You,” he stuttered out. 
“And?” Thomas prompted. 
“The wall.”
“Good. Three more things you can see.”
“Uh- a puddle. A stall. People.”
Thomas nodded, and Nico’s vision began to even out, the road becoming level again and the stranger’s faces returning to those of strangers, not the face of—well, he didn’t want to think about it. 
“Now name four things you can feel.”
“You. My shirt. Wind.”
He continued following Thomas’s instructions, gradually taking deeper breaths and stopping his head from spinning—three things he could hear was the hardest one, the noise of the crowd seeming to drown everything else out. Naming two things he could smell was easy: pastries from one stall and cooking meat from another. 
Naming one thing he could taste was a little more difficult- Nico hadn’t realized where the salty tang in his mouth had come from, but then he realized he had been clenching his jaw so hard that he had bitten the inside of his cheek, letting drops of blood into his mouth. 
“Do you feel better now?” Thomas asked.
“I—yes. Thank you. I—I don’t know what happened.”
“You got overwhelmed. It happens, I understand. Do you want to talk about it?”
Nico shook his head. “Later, maybe. Or never, that'd be great. Maybe I could just forget the whole thing.”
“Take your time, you can talk about it when you’re ready,” Thomas raised a hand and brushed Nico’s hair out of his face, his touch making Nico suddenly realize just how cold he was, despite the warm, end-of-summer air. 
“May I hug you?”
In answer, Nico wrapped his arms around Thomas and rested his chin on Thomas’s shoulder. Nico’s shoulders sagged in relief after he realized just how tight he was. 
“I’m sorry,” Nico muttered. 
“What? What for?” Thomas looked down at Nico and tilted his head to the side.
“I’ve wasted time. I’ve slowed you down. I don’t know how to do anything useful—I can’t even knit a square or climb a tree, let alone make anything you can! Stars, I’ve never really been outside my town before… before that day!”
“Hey, stop putting yourself down! I’ll try to teach you anything, the best that I can. Just ask. Or—or you could stay here! Or we could find a smaller or bigger human city, and you could live there, if you want.”
Thomas said the last part in a much smaller voice, almost as if he were afraid of what Nico would choose. 
Nico bit his lip and looked down at his shoes, well-worn and caked with mud on the soles. 
That thought crept into his mind again, burrowing deeper than before. If Thomas had asked before the marketplace, before the suffocating mob of people, before it felt like his rib cage had begun to squeeze the air out of his lungs, before his vision blurred and shifted, he might have been more torn in his decision. 
But after? After he realized he could never go back to being around so many people, after he realized he was even more ill-suited to staying in the towns and cities with a rigid schedule, under the rule of silk-robed pale men who never had to work a day in their lives, whom nothing ever went wrong for?
Living in the wild had been a dream of his when he was a child, but he now knew just how terrifying it could be—the woods full of things that go bump in the night and creatures with the power to harm him even in broad daylight, but… it was also freeing.
Now that he knew what it felt like to fly, who could he go back to simply looking at the sky?
“I want to stay with you.” 
“Oh. Oh! Oh, that’s great!” 
Nico might have never had been able to read people well as a child, had never been able to know what another person was thinking, but he knew now that Thomas… that Thomas had been afraid that Nico would choose to leave. And… maybe Nico himself had been a little afraid of leaving. Nico had always known he was different, with never understanding other people and having rather been in his own head than playing with other children, then later being uninterested in the girls around Ember’s Valley like all the other boys seemed to be. He had thought it was an elaborate joke being played on him, but later he realized he just didn’t like girls the way other boys did. 
All doubt had certainly gone from his mind. He wanted to stay with Thomas, he wanted to stay where he felt he belonged, no matter how different he might be. 
“Thank you for… letting me stay. But—but we came here to do shopping, and you haven’t even sold the scales!”
Thomas shrugged. “You’re more important than the market. But yeah, I do need to do that. You could stay here, in the alley, but…”
Nico shook his head. “I’ll go with you. I’d rather know where you are.”
“That’s what I thought, yeah. Here,” Thomas offered his hand to Nico. 
Nico hesitated just a moment before accepting. 
“Let’s go,” Nico laced his finger’s between Thomas’s as they stepped back into the crowd. He put his other hand on Thomas’s arm, steadying himself, and the feeling of Thomas’s arm distracted Nico from the noise.
Stars above, his muscles are gigantic! Nico shook his head to clear out the thoughts that were about to form, the shake and old habit he had picked up from his mother, his father had always told him. 
A deep breath, another slow count to five, and the two had stopped in front of a market stand, Nico turned his gaze to the sparkling jewelry laid down on soft cloth, each gem reflecting colorful light onto the hands of the stall owner. 
“Looking to buy? Sir, can I interest you in this wonderful ring? Perhaps for this lovely young man?”
Thomas blushed and shook his head. “Looking to sell, actually.”
“Sell?” The jeweler quirked his eyebrow upwards. “What have you got to sell? A family heirloom, perhaps?”
“No, not an heirloom. Here,” Thomas pulled out the small drawstring bag and shook the contents onto the silk tablecloth. 
The jeweler’s mouth opened into a small ‘o.’ “Wherever did you find such marvelous scales! One, two, oh my, five of them! And all whole! What wonderful colors!”
He held up a scale- a small purple one from Virgil- and rotated it slowly, watching the sunlight glint off the smooth surface.
“I’ll give you a hundred for each of them!” The merchant smiled after scrutinizing each one, turning them over in his hands. 
“Two hundred.” Thomas countered. 
“Two hundred! I’ll give you a hundred and fifty, no more and no less.”
“Okay. Deal.”
The jeweler gave one short ha! then held out his hand to shake. “A deal, then.”
“Yes, sir, a deal,” Thomas shook his hand once then pulled back.
The jeweler turned over his shoulder to bark an order at the young boy sitting behind the stand. “You! Count out a hundred fifty for each scale, and I better not see any errors, or else!”
“Yes, sir!” The boy scampered to his feet and reached under the tablecloth. 
The jeweler smiled at Thomas. “Can I interest you in anything else? Perhaps this lovely necklace? All handmade, you know! I match every gem with the perfect metal and-“
“No, thank you.”
The jeweler gave a forced grin. “Alright, alright. Thank you for your business, then.”
“Here you go, sir!” The boy stood up and pushed a pile of coins towards Thomas. “One hundred and fifty pieces for each of the five scales.” 
Thomas nodded and scooped the coins, divided into piles of small copper, medium silver, and large gold ones, into his larger leather bag and took Nico by the arm, leading him through the crowd again. 
Nico spared one last look at the young boy, who stood now behind the stall, his hands balled into fists by his side as the jeweler berated him. He felt a pang of pity for the boy before the scene was swallowed up by the endless wave of people. 
Once securely out of sight of the jewler, Thomas leaned over to Nico and whispered, “You know, I never understood why people insist on using coins instead of, I dunno, just trading. Like, I’ll give you some scales for all the food I can carry, or whatever.”
“Well, all the cities and towns on the East use the same currency, and it would be pretty hard to trade a sheep to someone who doesn’t know how to take care of sheep, I guess.”
“I guess you’re right. I still don’t think these coins are really useful, though.”
Nico nodded in understanding, and that was the last of their financial discussion. 
Thomas muttered the rest of their shopping list under his breath, giving Nico something to focus on other than the people bumping against him.  
“Thick yarn, salt, you need better shoes-“ Thomas nodded at Nico. “And warmer clothes.”
Nico looked at his feet, covered in thinning leather held together by its last threads. So much walking and moving and climbing had worn out his admittedly already old and worn shoes. And sure enough, the weather, while still warm by afternoon, was becoming slowly chillier each morning. 
They stopped at another stand, this one selling brightly colored balls of wool.
“Hello, what can I do for you?” The young woman running the stall smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkling, a stark contrast to the cold jewelry seller, whose smiles were all perfectly timed business transactions. 
Thomas nudged Nico, prompting him. “What colors do you want?”
Startled, not expecting to answer the woman’s question, Nico hesitated a moment. 
“That one, please,” He pointed to a pile of dusty pink wool, almost the color of the roses his mother took so much pride in growing. 
“And how many skeins?” The woman nodded, taking the wool from the stack into a bag. 
Thomas quickly counted something on his fingers. “Six, please.” 
“Alright, that’ll be a total of ninety, fifteen each!”
Thomas nodded and handed her four of the large gold coins.
“Oh! Sir, you gave me one too many! It’s only ninety coins,” She tried to hand Thomas back the last one, but he shook his head. 
“No, keep it. Consider it for the bag.” 
“I—thank you! Have a wonderful day, sir!”
Thomas nodded and the two walked away from the spinners’, stopping at several other stalls along the way, purchasing leather, thread, dried meat, hard cheese, a small metal bucket which Thomas put the purchased odds-and-ends in, and finally, with a much lighter coin pouch, he bought two small, sweet bread rolls drizzled with honey and sugar. 
Thomas led Nico to an empty bench, where the two put down their purchased goods at their feet and slowly ate the rolls, savoring each bite and enjoying the brief down-time, a break from constantly being on their feet. 
The setting sun cast long shadows of the surrounding buildings on the marketplace crowd as the two sat with their knees against the other’s, Nico sneaking glances at Thomas when the other wasn’t looking. 
There was something about the dimming golden light, the subsiding noise of the crowd, and the honey sticker on his fingers that made Nico want to… well, he wasn’t sure. 
Deciding that no move was the best choice, he brushed the thought out of his head and smiled and finished his snack just as the sun disappeared over the horizon, leaving the sky deep purple and clouds streaked with gold. 
“Ready to go?” Thomas looked over. 
Nodding, Nico stood up and wiped his hands on the thin paper wrapping the honey bread had come in. 
Nico knelt down to pick up their newly purchased goods, blood rushing back to his sore feet.
“Don’t worry,” Thomas took one of the bags. “I’ve got it.”
“No, let me take some!” Nico shook his head, tossing a leather bag strap over his shoulders.
He followed as Thomas started walking down the cobblestone-paved streets once again, the crowd having mostly retired to their homes for the night, making it much easier (and less nerve-wracking) to follow Thomas. 
Eventually the two reached the gate they had come in through, with the same guard posted, though still not doing a very good job, as instead of standing straight and tall, chest out, as was expected of most guards, he lay slumped on the ground, his back leaning against a discarded barrel as he took a nap. 
“Well,” Thomas paused. “I don’t see a reason to wake him.”
“Agreed,” NIco nodded and kept walking to the gate. 
Wincing at the squeal the rusted hinges gave in protest, Nico held the gate open for Thomas. When they were both officially outside the city walls, Nico let the gate shut with a reverberating clang. Despite the noise, the guard still slept.
Thomas started down the hill into the woods, Nico following. It was much more difficult to navigate the woods in the dark, yet Thomas never missed a step, unlike Nico, who tripped over an unseen fallen tree branch and slid down the hill on the leaf-litter, coming to an ungraceful stop a few feet ahead of Thomas, who smiled. 
“Are you okay?” Thomas asked as he helped Nico stand up. 
“Fine,” Nico flushed and hoped the darkness would hide the warmth that had spread to his cheeks when Thomas gripped his hand. 
“Alright, good. Let’s go find Logan and everyone else, and maybe in the morning I can teach you how to, uh, maybe, knit something?”
Nico brightened. “That’d be great! Yeah, let’s go.”
More time passed as Thomas led Nico to the clearing where the dragons had decided to settle for the night before they reached their destination.
Logan was the only dragon still pacing between the trees, the rest of them having gone to sleep piled against one another. 
“What took you so long?” Logan flicked his tail.
“It… it was more crowded than human cities normally are,” Thomas responded.
Nico let out a breath of relief. He knew Logan likely wouldn’t think anything of it, but he was still glad Thomas hadn’t revealed how… afraid he had been in the crowd, with the countless bodies pushing against him, almost suffocating. But all that was over now! Sitting with his back against a tree, he listened to Thomas and Logan talk, Thomas telling Logan about what the city was like, mercifully leaving out the details of Nico’s panic attack. 
But here in the forest, the night was peaceful.

There’s a - course? Race? Track? Anyway it’s like different terrains but only one way forward the entire time and it’s circular-ish, a whole lot of people - like hundreds - of different ages, status, genders are suddenly on the start-line. No one is told what is happening, they’re just there. A few people do start to quickly move forward, but most just kinda explores to try to figure out more. There’s weird animals that doesn’t exist in real life, but they’re all separate and caged and focused on their own stuff.
It’s not super long, maybe a few kilometers at most. There is sudden drops and sort-of buildings and so there’s a lot to explore. The last part before the end though is just a wall you need to climb/drop down followed by a straight asphalt yard a few hundred meters. At the end there’s like windows you have to climb through to get out. I find out it’s the end because as the guy I’m following gets there and sees the first person cross through, a sign shows up displaying something like 1/24. Then it continues 2/24 and so on. He realizes only a set amount of people will make it out, and runs back to get someone that he cared for. Since people are not hurrying, he does get back but it’s just at the very last few - 21, 22, 23 - when they gets there, and he makes the other person go through without telling her why. The next person that tries are as he predicted stopped, as an invisible wall is suddenly up and locks them inside.
So I am very thrown off by this, like, after hundreds of chapters (well,) you’re telling me tha main character just dies?? and is replaced by someone else??? But it turns out not to quite be the truth.
He is looped back to the wall, which he had been one of the first to scale. The animals are let loose this time, and he hears people’s screams as they start to run this time around. The people that had made it out is no longer there though, they are officially “out”.
This time he hurries over the asphalt yard as people are going fast this time, but it is different. There’s signs along the way explaining that they are going to die and how only 24 of them are going to get out - which makes people desperate, creepy uncanny valley large children slash dolls that move around like automated, huge pigs, pot holes with boiling water, eggs(??). At the end there is no windows to get through, just a stop. There’s a shack that looks freakishly oversized, like for a giant, with no possible way that he could open up the door. People catch up to him easily now that they’re hurried and desperate. 
He doesn’t hurry now, because death comes from all directions anyway, and every time he dies, time turns back and he has to start over. There’s no explanation for it. It doesn’t seem to be happening for anyone else as they do the same mistakes over and over.
Waiting at the wall, a dinosaur (raptor) soon shows up. It’s just a baby, cute almost though still the size of a full grown man. It doesn’t attack him, just seems wary. He gives it food and it starts to follow him like a street dog. It protects him from minor dangers such as the swarming humans that had trampled him the first round, as well as other raptors when they start showing up a little later, following people to eat them. Everytime he feeds the baby it grows, and depending on what he feeds it it becomes docile or blood thirsty. It never kills him as long as he befriends it at the start, but if it’s given too much meat it starts killing everything else and he can’t control it. As it leaves him alone to hunt the other raptors catch up to him and kills him. If it doesn’t get enough meat it won’t protect him in the first place. He realizes it’s a strict balance he needs to follow. But just the raptor isn’t enough to protect him forever - sooner or later a monster catch him off guard and he’s back at the start.
Along the last stretch though there is - riddles, for a lack of better word. They’re not obviously riddles at first, but as he looks at the signs talking about their doom closer he realizes there is ways he can manipulate them and with that manipulate the people around him. That’s the clue he needs to understand what he’s supposed to do. He turns the first sign off, but he doesn’t have the correct code for the second (or third). If he’s not fast, people see them first and freak out and he’ll die (again). It’s hard to find the right people among hundreds, almost impossibly so, but there is a man and a woman that can change them even when he can’t. The only way they stand out is the man is crying, a cloud of sadness following him. The woman got big red hair, shouting and being incredibly loud with some kinda comic-style shout-lightning lines over her head. Both of them influences the people around them to act more irrationally, so he needs to get to them quickly and convince them that they must bring people hope. He is good at talking, at manipulating people. He might convince one but not have enough time left to find the other. It works out with both after many, many tries. They do it,change the signs, people stop pushing and freaking out.
He continues to the next riddle for the first time - all the weird children. Their “mum” appears through a doorway, says it’s time to slaughter the pigs, and for the children to bring them to her. It’s the first time he hears this clue. In the earlier rounds - obviously - this results in the children bringing in humans, as the pigs will run too fast and also kill people in their way. But he’s seen enough by this round that this riddle - that isn’t time limited in the same way the first ones had been - feels easy. He knows that the pigs chase after boiled potatoes.
So he starts quickly collecting potatoes, throwing them in a hole of boiling water to spread the smell. This makes the pigs interested and they begin to flock there. The children leave people alone.
When he gets to the shack, the baby dino shows up again. By now it’s grown up and huge. He sorta asks it to help him get in to the shack, which it does by tearing away a part of the front lol. 
He gets a response, somehow. He don’t know from who or how, just that he recognizes the voice. He is told “congratulations, I was right to put my faith in you” or something like that but in a way that sounds more smug and like betting on a winning race horse. Then a screen shows up asking him to create a world basically like creating a document on a computer. He has to name it, which he creatively names like “the world” or similar. By winnning this, he becomes a minor god. 
The voice belongs to his “oversee:er”, a god of sorts tasked with his training, He is the one creating this whole scenario. He got a, i don’t know what, aura? and it’s white as a human. To be a “proper” god out of training it needs to be dark. With every death/new experience, it gets a little darker. Despite his many deaths it’s barely gray though, far from enough.
He finds out more than he’s supposed to about his oversee:er.

“But if we –"
Natasha holds up a hand and Yelena stops talking. “Do you hear that?”
It’s faint but there’s the sound of someone moving around on her apartment floor. Being the only person who lives on this floor and one of the few in this building is enough for this to raise the hairs on the back of her neck.
Survival for them has always meant constant vigilance.
Both of their heads swivel towards the front door as the footsteps become louder, very clearly approaching her apartment.
Yelena doesn’t have to look to know Natasha is mirroring her, pulling out her gun and scanning every entry-way for possible intruders.
On edge, Yelena presses herself against the door, readying herself until she listens properly and realises the approaching footsteps sound familiar. 
Somehow, she feels herself relax and become even more tense at the same time.
“Stop,” she says as Natasha moves towards the door as well, holding an arm out to stop her. “It’s okay. I know who it is.”
At her words Natasha relaxes, putting her gun away but she watches her face carefully as she does so.
The panic Yelena can feel building inside her must not be as well hidden as she thought because a slow grin spreads across her face as the sound of a gentle knock echoes through Yelena’s apartment.
“Is it..?”
“Yes,” Yelena replies curtly. “And no. You can’t meet them.”
Natasha gives her a wicked look, clicking her teeth together teasingly. “What? Scared I’ll…eat them?”
She snickers as Yelena reaches out and shoves her hard enough to knock the air out of her while also giving her a firm and clear: im going to kill you if you don't listen to me look as she goes to open the door.
Not that it's ever stopped Natasha before.
“Just stay there,” Yelena hisses and then wrenches the door open, finding you behind it with your hand still mid-air, prepared to knock a second time.
“Y/N!”
“Hi,” you say, looking a little startled but smiling at her none the less as you drop your hand.
Beside her and thankfully, just out of your view, Natasha, to her credit, is silent but Yelena can feel her gaze glued to her face and can especially feel the amusement radiating off her in waves.
She grits her teeth, forcing a smile. Your own fades a little as you take her in. “Is this a bad time?”
“No,” Yelena says quickly. Still out of sight, Natasha lets out a huff of laughter just quiet enough that she hopes she’s the only one that hears her.
“Not at all,” she adds, and since the door covers most of her body, it’s safe for her to reach out and pinch Natasha on the arm. Which is what she does. Hard. “Just --give me a second?”
Clearly still puzzled, you nod and Yelena closes the door, giving you a smile that she has a feeling looks more like a grimace.
Next she grabs Natasha by the arm and starts walking her forcibly towards the window. “Out.”
Natasha raises an eyebrow as she pulls them to an abrupt stop, looking at her then looking out the window. “You seriously want me to scale ten stories because you’re an idiot?”
As an answer, Yelena unlocks the latch and lets the window sweep open, giving her a pointed look that says: Yes. Obviously. 
Natasha rolls her eyes but to Yelena’s relief, she slides out the window.
“неудачник,” is all she says in parting before she disappears, dropping down the stairwell and vanishing from sight completely.
The word lingers in the air after her: Loser.
Yelena scowls after her for a second before she rushes back to the door and opens it, letting out a sigh of relief when she sees you’re still there, standing in the same spot.
“Sorry,” she apologises, swinging the door open. “There was just a uh, complication....a spider. I caught it and put it outside. I know you hate them.”
As she speaks, you slowly raise one eyebrow at her. The other quickly follows and it's then that she notices the narrowed look in your eyes.
When you start speaking, your voice is low and scarily calm. “So it has nothing to do with the woman I just made eye contact with as she was climbing down your fire escape?”
Something Yelena is proud to say is that in her life there have been very few times she’s been at a loss for words. 
This however is one of them.
She stares at you, blankly, knowing her panic must be showing on her face by the way your expression progressively becomes darker and darker as seconds pass and she fumbles frantically for something to say.
“I, uh, she is, she, uh –”
“—Natasha Romanoff. Nice to meet you.”
To her credit, Natasha has always been the stealthier of the two of them. Ignoring that fact, Yelena chooses to believe that her being distracted by you is why she doesn’t hear her coming back up the stairwell.
She also chooses to believe that she didn’t visibly jump at the sound of her voice and that the cough Natasha lets out is genuine and not covering up a laugh that says she’s going to mock her mercilessly for this entire thing later.
Of course, Yelena can’t fool herself but she tries anyway.
You look even more unimpressed as Natasha comes to a stop beside her and it clicks in Yelena’s head that you think her and Natasha – her and Natasha. She can’t even finish the thought.
As funny as it is, she doesn’t let herself laugh, knowing instinctively that it’s not a good idea. The flinty look in your eyes just confirms how much of a not good idea that is.
Just because you weren’t raised like her doesn’t mean that you couldn’t pack a punch; something she learned early on in your relationship when she’d accidentally snuck up on you once. She’d had a black eye for weeks after that.
“Natasha is my --” she isn’t sure how to say: ‘this is the woman I was trained to kill people with while we grew up being tortured and experimented on, remember I told you?’ In a way that won’t make you go running for the hills.
As she trails off, Natasha, sensing her panic, jumps in. Yelena knows that internally, she must be laughing hysterically though to her merit, she keeps it to herself. “I’m her… sister. Of sorts.”
You know about her past – all of what she was willing to repeat of it anyway – so comprehension quickly dawns on your face.
“Then why…?”
She watches as Natasha’s mouth twitches, sounding amused as she directly addresses you: “Well... my sister is an idiot. I’m sure you’ve noticed.”
Yelena tenses as you give her a once over, raking your eyes over her consideringly, before you turn back to Natasha.  “I may have noticed that. Yes.”
"Hey," Yelena protests, weakly. "That's not fair."
You give her a pointed look and she falls silent. Resigned to her fate, she lets out a sigh.
She can tell from the matching scheming looks brewing in both your own and Natasha’s eyes that this is only going to be the start of her own personal torment.

The one thing she really, really hates about her family is that they have this habit of showing up unannounced – you’d think that the whole being assassins and consequently, a little trigger happy as a result would make someone call ahead but no.
Never.
For this reason, it comes as no surprise when there’s the familiar three tap repetitive secret knock knock knock they had all come up with years ago on her front door early the following morning.
Silently, Yelena prays you don’t hear it and stay asleep as she drags herself out of bed and prepares herself for what she’s about to deal with.
Truthfully, she’s a little surprised that they’d had enough tact to wait until morning. She’d half expected them to be knocking her door down the second Natasha relayed last nights events to them. 
Yanking the door open, she comes face-to-face with Alexei and Melina. Taking them both in and cataloguing mentally that they look alive and uninjured, she lets herself glare at both of them.
“Is something wrong?”
They both frown. “No?”
“Okay I’m closing the door then.”
She starts to swing it shut but it’s quickly caught as Alexei shoves a foot in between it and the doorframe, giving her a reproachful look.
“Is your –”
“Yes,” Yelena interrupts, scowling harder than before, if that was even possible. “Now, leave.”
The look on Alexei’s face shifts, now suddenly a little too much on the wrong side of sneaky. “Can we—”
“No.”
“But–"
“I don’t care. You can’t meet them,” she barks, probably too loudly, as she shoves him back out into the hallway. If she has to throw them bodily out of here, she will. It just would likely attract your attention, which is the opposite of what she wants. “They’re asleep.”
“We can wake them,” he suggests, unhelpfully.
Yelena glares at him harder. “No.”
It’s faint but all of a sudden, she can hear the sound of a door squeaking as it opens. Her bedroom door to be more exact. Your voice calling out to her quickly follows.
“Okay,” she says. “I’m closing the door now.”
“Hey, no wait –” Alexei starts to protest. Yelena closes the door firmly in their faces and is working on dead-bolting it just as you appear in her line of sight.
You blink at her blearily, wearing just one of her T-shirts and nothing else. Thank god she hadn’t let them in. “Who was that?”
“Neighbours,” Yelena lies. “Looking for their …cat.”
Still half asleep, you don’t think to question her and she sags against the door in relief as you venture into the kitchen in search of coffee.
To her relief, there are no subsequent persistent knocks or calls through the door and after a second, she can hear the quiet sound of footsteps and Alexei’s grumbling as they retreat.
Natasha is one thing – their parents or pseudo-parents or whatever they are – are another thing entirely. She’d save that one for another day.
Or never, preferably.

The young girl furrows her brows, front teeth catching her lip as she stares at the board. She's in deep concentration, barely paying any mind to the sweets or the apple cider (poured within a much too expensive cup) beside her.
Her opponent, on the other hand, is the opposite, holding a cup of tea within her palms, white steam drifting from the cup the same colour as her hair. A mystical smile on the woman’s face gives nothing away.
The young girl places a hand on a chip. Then hesitates, thinking a moment more before making a move.
The woman sets her cup down, ruby eyes scanning over the board before she lifts a jewelled hand, moving chips across the board in great succession.
"And with that, I believe I win," Ningguang says. "You did very well this time."
The young girl pouts, trying to hold back the tears in her eyes.
"Oh, don't tear up. It's alright," Ningguang produces a handkerchief and holds it out.
The girl takes it gratefully, hiding her face in the cloth. "Uh- huh."
Ningguang exhales. Children are so delicate, like the petals of glaze lilies. "How about you go to the other room? I'll clean up here."
The girl nods, and slides off her chair. "Can I take my juice?"
"Of course, you may. But remember to hold it carefully."
She nods.Holding the cup carefully with two hands, she slides open the silk screen and enters the next room.
Your head turns at the sound, looking up from your spot by the window: perched upon a lounge chair, feet up. You smile and gesture for the girl to sit beside you. She sets her cup down and crawls next to you, burying her face in your chest.
"How did your game go, Haruko?" You ask, combing her hair free of tangles.
Haruko shakes her head and a sniffle escapes her. "I lost."
You hum sympathetically, “I'm sorry. There's always next time. You and Lady Ningguang were playing for a really long time! Good job."
Harukao's grip loosens a smidge. "Thank you."
The screen door slides open again and Ningguang steps through. The material of her gold dress drags behind her as she walks, the movement smooth as water. She has a familiar treat nestled in the palm of her hands, a famous Liyue sweet candy.
You nudge Harkuo gently. She lifts her head, crimson eyes widening when she sees the candy. She scrambles out of your lap.
Seeing them side by side, Haruko looks more like Ningguang’s daughter than yours. Their eye colour and hair are almost identical. But Ningguang has high cheekbones and a sharp jaw, whereas Haruko has round, filled in cheeks, like her father.
"For you," Ningguang offers it to Haruko. "As thanks for an excellent game of checkers."
Haruko takes the candy with an excited beam on her face. "Thank you, Aunt Ningguang!"
“You are most welcome.”
With the candy, Haruko’s sadness about losing the match is all but forgotten. She rummages through one of the cabinets by the wall, pulling out a colouring book (A collection of cartoon-like Rex Lapis drawings in his dragon form) and the crayons that are specifically kept there.
Many years had passed since the first golden house went crashing into the ocean after the battle with the Ancient God Osial. But the loss only pushed Ningguang to rebuild the new one, bigger, more elegant, and efficient than the last.
Currently, it was parked atop Mount Tianheng, overlooking the harbour. It was fancy, the walls a rich cream and the floors polished dark brown. Some things had to be kid-proofed (especially when Haruko was younger and Beidou insisted on bringing her to visit.) But now, she’s old enough, and familiar enough with the building, that you’re not worried. Not even by the koi pond that circles the living room.
Ningguang plants herself across from you on the couch as Haruko begins to colour in Rex Lapis’ tail. “She’s growing bigger and bigger every day.”
You nod in agreement. “I swear, she’ll be taller than her father soon enough.”
Ningguang laughs. “Sooner or later.”
Haruko’s finished two drawings and is on the third when you look outside the window to the Port of Liyue harbour, glimmering with the midday sun. The familiar outline of the Alcor’s sail and ship dots the horizon. You stand up.
"Are you finished with your juice, Haruko? We're going to get ready soon."
She perks up. "Is dad here?"
You smile at her. "Yes. Almost. You want to be the first to greet him, don't you?"
She nods adamantly, hurrying to put away her things in their proper places.
"There are some ingredients in the kitchen if you'd like to prepare a lunch before you depart," Ningguang suggests.
“Thank you,” you say to her, before turning to your daughter. “What would you like to make?”
She thinks for a moment. “What do you think dad would like?”
“Hm. Anything that isn’t fish,” you make your way to the kitchen, Haruko following closely behind. “After a month at sea, I think he’s sick of fish.”

Lunch made and packaged, you and Haruko begin the long walk down to the Port. Steps of green plaustrite appear as you walk. They used to frighten Haruko terribly. Now, though, she loves the way they appear under her feet and disappear when she steps off.
“Watch your steps,” you remind her. Though you trust Ningguang’s architects, you want her to be careful.
“Uh-huh,” Haruko says, half-listening. She’s always distractible on these types of days.
Kazuha isn’t a frequent member onboard the Alcor anymore, but occasionally Beidou will plead with him to accompany her. She says his anemo vision makes cutting through enemies so much easier.
Kazuha will go on month-long voyages with the Crux, maybe two months if he feels like it, but refuses anything more. He doesn’t want to spend time away from you or your daughter.
By the time you arrive at the docks, you’re sweating and the Alcor is pulling into the harbour. Haruko hops up on a dock anchor, waving to the ship.
“Hi!”
A deafening honk sounds from the ship, making Haruko laugh. Then again. Then once more. Honk honk honk honk-
Jeez, Ningguang can probably hear the boat from Mount Tianheng.
Haruko stands back just enough so that the sailors can tie the boat off and lower the gangplank, then she’s rushing onboard the ship. A woman hops down from the wheel, holding out her arms as Haruko leaps into them.
“Auntie Beidou!”
“Hiya Haru!” Beidou grins, swinging your daughter around in a bear hug, long brown hair flying everywhere. “How have you been? Jeez, you’re getting tall!”
“Good! Aunt Ningguang said she misses you.”
Beidou’s grin widens. “Has she, now?”
“Beidou,” you greet sweetly. (Walking on board with much more restraint.) “It’s good to see you’re well.”
Her eye softens. Haruko slowly slides out of her arms. “The same to you. I thought you guys were coming to meet us tomorrow?”
Your house, the one you and Kazuha have, is right on the border between Mondstadt and Liyue. It’s far from the port but it’s quiet, nestled by the beaches of Yaoguang Shoal.
“Well, Ningguang offered us to stay last night, so we did. Haruko wanted to see her dad as soon as possible.”
“Ahh, I see. Well, good to see you again.” Beidou turns to Haruko, mischievous smile on her face. “Your dad’s gonna be thrilled, watch this.”
She cups her hands around her mouth and shouts, “Kaz!”
High up on the mast, a tuft of white hair pops out from the crow’s nest. You smile and give a wave. The tuft disappears, and quick as the wind, the man reappears, hastily scaling down the mast.
He jumps the rest of the way and rolls to his feet, brushing white hair from his eyes, and is promptly tackled by Haruko, nearly losing his balance.
“Daddy!” she squeals.
“Haruko,” Kazuha grins, hoisting her up to rest against his side. “It’s been so long. How are you?”
“Good, dad. How was your trip? What did you do? Did you see any scary monsters?”
“Scary monsters, hm, I may have encountered a few.”
“You gotta tell me over lunch – can we eat it in the bird's nest? We made lunch for you!”
“Crow’s nest,” Kazuha corrects gently. “And really? Wow. Did you help make it?”
“Uh-huh! But I’m not telling you what it is; it’s a surprise! You’ll have to open it like a present.”
“That sounds lovely, Haruko. Thank you.”
You walk up to them and press a kiss to Kazuha’s cheek. “Hi, Kaz.”
“Hello, love,” Kazuha purrs, leaning into your touch. “You look stunning.”
Beidou guaffs, Haruko’s nose wrinkles. “Ew.”
(She used to scream at Kazuha to stop whenever he’d recite sappy love poems to you, covering his mouth with both hands so he’d stop talking. It always made you laugh.)
You pull away from Kazuha and save your daughter and Beidou from your ‘gross’ affections. “The journey to Inazuma ok?”
His eyes briefly harden. He smiles tightly. “It was alright.”
There’s a hidden we’ll talk about this later in his voice, unnoticed by Haruko. She wriggles and Kazuha sets her down.
“Can we climb the mast now?”
Kazuha takes her hand, “Ask the captain.”
“Auntie – Captian Beidou, can we climb the mast please?”
Beidou ruffles her head. “Of course you can, kid. Keep an eye out for me on there, yeah?” Then to Kazuha. “I gotta run some errands on land. If I’m not back by the time you’re gone, thanks for everything.”
Kazuha raises a brow. “Might those ‘errands’ have anything to do with that golden brocade you bought?”
Beidou just waves and grins, trotting off the gangplank and jogging towards the Jade Chamber.

The crow’s nest is really only meant for one person standing up, much less three adults and one child, but you make it work. Haruko is obviously given the best seat, you’re squashed beside her, and Kazuha balances on the edge of the nest, legs dangling over the air.
“Why can’t I do that?” Haruko asks as you unpack lunch.
“Because it’s dangerous. Your dad’s very experienced and can catch himself if he falls.”
You’ve seen it happen many times before. Kazuha losing his footing or grip, that split second when he fell and your heart stopped. Then the gust of air that followed, propelling himself back up to safety.
“Once you’re bigger, you can do this,” Kazuha says.
Haruko huffs. “You always say that…”
He chuckles and pats her head. “We just want you safe, is all.”
You pass out bowls and chopsticks around. Kazuha helps affix a chopstick holder to Haruko’s (she’s getting better, but it’s still a challenge to her.) Haruko insists Kazuha close his eyes as you pour out lunch.
“Ok, you can open them!” she says once things are all set.
Kazuha opens his eyes. A steaming bowl of Jueyun Guoba rests in his hands. Juicy cuts of ham, crisp Jueyun chilis, and the rich aroma enough to make your mouth water.
“Ta-dah! What do you think?”
“Oh, Haruko, it looks divine. You made this?”
“Yep! Hurry and taste it!”
Kazuha takes a bite, closing his eyes. “Delicious. So tasty. Captain Beidou should hire you as a chef, or better yet, wanmin restaurant should hire you.”
Haruko grins ear to ear, “Hehe, thank you.”
As you all eat, Kazuha tells you all about the adventures from his trips. How he saw the most beautiful of flowers, or how he fought a translucent glowing eel, Captian Beidou cooked it up and ate it, how she was sick for three straight days afterwards.
Haruko listens to him intently, staring at Kazuha with such a light in her eyes that makes your stomach flutter with pride.
You snuggle closer to Haruko, wrapping an arm around her. The three of you like actual crows, tucked high away, safe from the clutches of the outside world.

Haruko wears Kazuha out that day.
She seems to want to do everything Kazuha missed for the past month in a single day. You told her she needn’t rush – Kazuha wasn’t going away any time soon - but that didn’t deter her in the slightest.
You soak your feet in the icy ocean and search for seashells in the sand. You catch crystal flies in the old ruins, delighting in the way Haruko’s face lights up when the yellow wings fade, leaving just the core. You scale one of the many stone cliffs just to enjoy the view as Kazuha plays a tune from a passing leaf.
On your way home, you get some mora meat from a vendor and share the remaining candies from Ningguang as the sun dips below the horizon. When Haruko’s eyes begin to droop, Kazuha carries her on his back the rest of the way home.
Kazuha brushes the hair from her face, kissing her forehead delicately. “Good night, my starlight. May your dreams be as sweet as shooting stars.”
“Poetic,” you murmur, barely containing a laugh.
Kazuha’s eyes gleam as the two of you tuck the covers tight around Haruko, kiss her once more for good measure, then gently close the door on her bedroom.
Finally, alone, Kazuha wastes no time in wrapping his arms around your waist, resting his head against your shoulder and sighing.
“Tired, pretty boy?” you ask, a lilt of mirth in your voice.
Kazuha hums in agreement, releasing you to intertwine your fingers. He gazes at you, eyes-half lidded, and presses a smattering of kisses to your hand.
“Shall we go on a walk?”
You glance at Haruko’s bedroom.
“Don’t worry,” Kazuha reassures you. “The wind will watch over her.”
You’re tired, but you’ve also missed Kazuha enough to fight off your slumber. You both wrap up, then make the walk down to the sandy pools of Yougung. The full moon is high in the sky, the breeze cool against your skin.
“Things are still bad over in Inazuma,” Kazuha begins, softly. The wind almost carries his voice away. “It’s gotten better. The vision hunt decree is struck down. Some visions have been returned to the people, but things are still very tense over there…It’s not a place where I want to bring our daughter…”
You squeeze his fingers tightly. It’s felt like ages since you first met Kazuha, when he was just a spry young man onboard the crux. His hair was shorter, he still wore bandages over his arm to hide his injuries from escaping Inazuma.
Now, he lets his hair loose. He wears more Liyue-style clothing. His right hand – the one in your grasp, has healed. Though the physical pain has left, the scars remain.
“I miss my homeland,” Kazuha croaks. “I love what I have with you – I love our home. But a part of me feels forever trapped in Inazuma. Longing for it. I-” He shakes his head, speckles of crystal tears forming in his eyes. Your heart aches at the sight.
“It’s alright, Kazuha,” you wrap your arms around him, rubbing his back. “I can’t begin to understand what that feels like…but I can be here to help you.”
“I just fear-“ he chokes, gripping your shirt. “I fear I’ll never be able to see it again. I’ll never get to bring Haruko to see the cherry blossoms that bloom in spring, or let her feed the cats that roam the islands like wanderers.”
Though you want to, though every part of you wants to assure him he’ll see it, you can’t promise him that. He knows it as well.
You comb your fingers through his hair as his tears stain your shirt. “If that’s the case - If things never get better in our lifetime - then we will make the most of it. Nothing lasts forever. Inazuma will one day change.”
You pull his head from your shoulder to meet his eyes. They’re red and puffy. You rub your thumbs over his cheeks, wiping away tear tracks.
“But no matter what, we’ll see it through together.”
Kazuha covers your hand with his, leaning into your touch. “Thank you, love. I am forever grateful that I get to spend my life with you.”
You rest your forehead against his, pressing forward just enough so your lips touch.
“Forever,” you murmur. “And then beyond where the wind lies.”

Ok i got an monster tom x scientist reader au universe thing and no it does not take place in the red army base
Reader is a scientist and is asked to run some tests on a new specimen/monster they found, and when reader sees the specimen/monster they actually think it's kinda cute but then some other scientists shock him and even stick some needles in him and reader just feels bad for the specimen/monster at this point so nighttime rolls around and they hack into the cameras to shut them off and wear a mask so they won't get caught and go to the main room where the specimen/monster is they the reader introduces themselves to the monster the monster, thinking they're gonna hurt them, immediately backs off obviously scared and reader convinces the monster that they're not gonna hurt them and the monster shrinks as he's mostly human and says "your not gonna hurt me?" And they reassure him that they're not gonna hurt him and they sneak into the readers car and drives off the lab that the monster was in and reader asks what the "monsters" name is and says their name is "tom". Then reader makes a pit stop to a store real quick to get tom some clothes and then reader drives to they're home and introduces tom to their room and asks if they want some food/ take out or not an he says yes and they get some chinese food and watch some TV, after eating they both go to bed and reader suddenly finds themselves in Toms arms whimpering a little, and reader just kinda decides to pet his hair and rub his horns a little bit which make him purr then tom wraps his tail around reader and asks them to do it more and they do do that untill they notice that he's asleep then they both fall asleep.

Summary: Reader, a scientist, rescues Monster Tom from the lab that experimented on him and brings him home

"Dr. [L/n], I'll let you oversee today's tests on TR-03."
"Alright, chief." You smiled awkwardly as your supervisor handed you the clipboard. It contained the subject's information: a one-eyed horned monster of an unknown species, though your colleagues have theorized it to be a demon. "What kind of tests are we running on it?"
"Resistance to electric shocks. There's evidence of uranium possibly circulating in its blood, so you'll be watching them extract samples as well."
As he explained, your smile gradually dropped as you looked over the information, seeing a ton of redacted information, including several incidents of the destruction it caused prior to its capture.
"So it's gonna be shocked and stuck with needles? Sounds painful."
"Its armor is thick, so it shouldn't feel a thing. Besides...I don't think you need to worry about whether it'll be painful for it." Your supervisor spoke in a rather condescending tone. "After all it's just an animal."
"I...yes, sir. I'll go oversee the tests right away." Not wanting to argue further, you just left his office and wandered through the building.
You were eager yet anxious to meet this monster.
Eventually you reached the area where the creature was being held, climbing up the stairs that led to the skybridge so you could look down into its holding chambers.
It was a massive dark purple creature, with two bright violet horns and a single black eye. Surprisingly it was allowed full movement, though judging from the many claw marks on the walls...it wouldn't surprise you if one day it was chained up to restrict such behavior.
You actually thought it was..kind of cute? It looked scary in pictures, but up-close it didn't seem as terrifying.
That only made you feel more pity for it as other scientists entered the chamber, clad in protective suits, with electric prongs and needles.
Almost immediately the monster seemed aware of what they were going to do, its eye widening as it stood on both feet and cowered in the corner. It growled in warning, only for a scientist to jab its leg with a prong in response, eliciting a roar of pain.
You physically flinched, feeling bad for the creature. But you took notes on its response to electric shocks.
Subject recognized equipment immediately, perceiving them as danger. Responded painfully to electricity.
Soon after being tortured, the monster seemed dazed, allowing another scientist in a hazmat suit to approach it and stick a needle into its hip. The vial of blood collected turned out to be red, with a glowing green aura.
As you took more notes, you heard a small whimper and looked down, seeing that the monster wasn't putting up a fight.
Instead it was...crying?
Sure enough, tears leaked from its eye as more of its blood was drawn, being electrocuted as some sick form of "sedation". It was hard to tell whether the people inside felt any sort of sympathy, but they just took their leave without saying a word to each other. Only a mere nod.
You didn't want to be here any longer than you needed to, so you finished your report and began heading back to your office.
Though you noticed the monster looking up at you, and you couldn't help but frown and murmur a simple:
"I'm sorry."

After your shift was over, normally you'd go home for the night.
But on the ride home...you kept thinking of TR-03 and couldn't shake the images and sounds of its pain.
The way it responded to just seeing the prongs, and the way it looked at you as though it was begging for help, seemed far too human for it to be just a mindless animal.
Of course, you never questioned the secrets this lab kept--not wanting to be fired. But they seemed to be hiding a lot of stuff about this specimen, never speaking about its origins or even what it was capable of.
You may have only seen it for the first time today, but you wanted to know more about it. And you had a feeling that you won't get the answers you wanted by asking around.
Oh no..you were going to free it in order to find out the truth.
Not just to satisfy your own curiosity, but also because...the way it was being treated was far too cruel. To the point where it was crying.
You couldn't stand for this unethical treatment any longer. You had to do something..and be smart about it lest you got killed or worse.
After making a quick stop at a store, you found a mask and changed your clothes, completely disguising yourself. Then you got back in your car and returned to the lab, parking it somewhere far away so that you can sneak inside.
Fortunately you had security access in case any of the specimen breached their chambers. Thanks to your hacking skills you were able to disable every security camera you could find, putting them all on timers so they'd turn on later in the morning. You didn't want to rouse any suspicion.
That was the easy part.
The most important and difficult task lied ahead.

As soon as you entered the monster's chamber, it woke up and grumbled with annoyance. Clearly it didn't like its rest being disturbed.
Though upon seeing you and the mask you wore, it tilted its head. "Grrrah..?"
"Shhh, it's okay." You whispered, removing the mask so it could see your face. While you were awestruck to actually see it up close and personal, you knew you had to keep calm.
But that might've been a mistake as it seemed to recognize you--the one who was watching it earlier today. It immediately backed into a corner, terrified as its chest began heaving with anxiety.
You couldn't blame it for its reaction, though your gently put your hands up and hushed it. "Please don't panic. I'm not here to hurt you. I wanna get you out of here."
"Hrrgrah?"
"Mhm." Smiling, you just pretended you could understand it. "I don't like how they treat you here. They call you an animal but..I know you're more than that."
The monster calmed down a little, before glancing up to the opposite corner. He made a noise of confusion upon seeing that the security camera's annoying red light wasn't blinking.
"I shut that off so nobody can hear or see us."
"H...ack..?"
You blinked, surprised that it could speak some English, but the fact it wasn't cowering like before was a sign it was trusting you. "Yep, I hacked the whole security complex. Now's our chance to escape, but..ah shit."
Suddenly, it never occurred to you: your mission was focused on getting to the monster, but you never considered how you'll get out with the monster.
"Damn..I'm not sure how we'll sneak you out without...." However, you trailed off as you saw it changing into a smaller form.
But it wasn't just shrinking, it was actually turning partially human.
How curious, nobody told you about that. Maybe that was part of the redacted information.
The monster turned out to be a human male, who still retained his horns, tail, and dark scales and fur, which covered his body. His brown hair was messy and spiky, and interestingly enough he had two black eyes.
He didn't have any clothes, obviously, so you took off your coat and put it around him. "So you're human, huh?"
"Your stupid friends' experiments wouldn't let me turn back for a while..." He grumbled in a slight British accent. "You sure you're not gonna hurt me?"
Understandably he got defensive, knowing you were working for the people who tortured him. But you shook your head. "No, I won't. I'm quitting this shithole and I'll take you with me." You took his hand reassuringly, noting that it was still clawed.
He gave you the tiniest of smiles in return. "Heh, glad we're both in agreement."
Soon you both quickly made your escape, luckily not running into any trouble. Your car was still parked right where you left it, so you got in and drove off.
You definitely won't miss working for that lab.
The roads were mostly empty at this time of night, so you were able to breathe easy knowing nobody's gonna chase you. Now seemed to be the best time to talk with the monster.
"So uh..do you have a name?" You spoke up. "I know they call you TR-03 but it doesn't feel right to call you that anymore."
"Tom." He answered as he looked out the window. "My name's Tom Ridges."
'Huh, that explains his code name.'
"I'm [y/n]." After noticing a nearby plaza, you saw a clothing store and decided to make a quick stop there. Tom seemed to be confused, and a bit worried when you left him in the car all alone, though you reassured him you were just buying some clothes for him.
He waited, trying to keep himself out-of-view in case any strangers got too nosy. But before long you were back, opening the driver's side as you peered in and sighed with relief, seeing him halfway out of the chair.
"Jeez, you scared me..thought somebody got you." You sighed, shaking your head.
"S-Sorry, not trying to get any unwanted attention. It's the last thing I need.." He sat upright, though he was surprised when you handed him a bag. Inside was a blue hoodie, boxers, and gray sweatpants. "Oh, cool."
'That's all he has to say?' His reaction was a bit underwhelming. 'Then again..maybe he hasn't processed that he's never going back to that hell chamber yet.'
You just shut the door and waited for him to get dressed, and when he tapped on the window you got back into the car. He definitely looked more comfortable now.
After giving him a smile, you continued on your way home, feeling glad that you rescued him from that place. You had no idea if he had any place to go, granted you don't recall seeing any information on his address nor any relationships.
So he'll stay with you.

"Luckily I got a spare room. Excuse the mess." You chuckled as you showed Tom the extra room in your house, turning on the light. "You can stay here for as long as you'd like."
He nodded as he looked around, before feeling his stomach grumble. In embarrassment he put a hand over it, glancing at you. "Sorry..the food they had was shitty, I'm sure you knew."
"Yeah...you want takeout?" You took out your phone. "I don't feel like cooking tonight so I was gonna order some anyway."
"Sounds good."
"Alrighty, I'll call in the order. We can go watch TV while we wait."
Once more Tom nodded, following you into the living room space where you both sat down on the sofa. He sighed and leaned back, turning on the TV while you ordered some Chinese food.
This situation felt so...comforting and familiar..
For a moment he gazed at you, seeing you look through the menu.
He knew he wasn't the only prisoner back in that lab. So he couldn't understand why you'd choose him, of everyone you could've helped, but...he considered himself lucky.
For once he felt like he could let his guard down a little.
Some time later the food arrived to your house, and you both ate it while watching various TV programs. You asked Tom a bit more about his home life, though he didn't have much to talk about.
Whether he didn't want to say anything or forgot it thanks to the experiments was a mystery, but you wouldn't pry. You'll get your answers sooner or later, though not tonight.
Tonight you both deserved a good rest.
Afterwards you headed off to your own room, letting him know that he can knock on your door if he ever needed anything.
You got into your pajamas and crawled into bed, yawning.
It had definitely been an eventful day. You were eager to sleep in, knowing that you won't ever go back to your boring (and unethical) job.
But just as you had turned off the lights and dozed off, you heard your door creak open. With a slightly annoyed sigh, you sat up and turned on the lamp beside you, before seeing it was Tom.
"Tom? Your room is..."
Though you fell silent when you heard him...whimper? His eyes were white, indicating he was in some kind of distress.
But he crawled onto your bed, practically situating himself in your arms while making sure he didn't jab you with his horns. You were perplexed by his actions, though you finally realized..
He was just scared.
You held him in your arms, rubbing his horns soothingly and petting his hair, murmuring promises that he was safe. In response he nuzzled up to you, tail wrapping around your body as you both laid down.
You only stopped for a moment as he started purring, which made you chuckle softly. "Purring, huh? That's new."
"Can you keep doing that?" He grumbled, closing his eyes. "It was nice till you stopped."
"O-Oh right, sorry." You continued the previous motions, deciding to hum a small song as well to help him sleep.
Eventually you stopped once he dozed off completely, and your cheeks felt warm upon seeing how adorable he looked. 'And to think I was afraid of this guy?' You mused, before turning off the lamp light.
Soon enough you fell asleep as well.
If this is how Tom expressed his thanks...you'll take it.

Summary: After Natasha Romanoff took down the Red Room, the former Widows scattered to the wind. Raised to be a killing machine and released into the world with nothing and no one, you decided to use your newfound autonomy to take down the bad guys of your choosing. But now Natasha is riddled with guilt for leaving you on your own. She wants to recruit you, rehabilitate you, make you part of a team again. But the rest of the squad has reservations, and no one is more against you than Bucky Barnes.

Chapter Three
If you had a home, it would be Bucharest, even though you despise the place. It was the first place you went when you got free, because you know he’s here somewhere, conducting his evil machinations from the shadows, shielded by layer after layer of vile men across the globe doing his dirty work. There are plenty of men out there deserving of your particular brand of justice, but no one more so than the Viper. Sometimes you think that, if you can just find him and take him out, you might be able to move on—try to make a normal life for yourself, whatever that looks like. You don’t allow yourself to think about what will happen if you finally achieve your life’s goal and it’s still not enough for you.
You remember everything about the day you learned of the Viper’s existence. You were just 7 years old, one of many little girls packed into a shipping container. You had no idea how long you’d been in there or how long you would be in there. It smelled rancid, and there was never a moment of quiet. Most of the girls were screaming or crying, but a few (like you) were silent, just observing. You don’t know who sold you from your orphanage and shipped you off to Dreykov and you never will. What you do know is that you had no family to miss and no one to miss you, so you didn’t understand what the others were so upset about. From the very beginning, you adjusted to life as a Widow almost effortlessly, which is its own form of tragedy.
Others, though, they were stolen away from people who loved them. This seemed a foreign concept to you when you heard about it from the tiny, sobbing girl huddled next to you in the shipping container—the girl who told you about the Viper, the girl who would become your first and only friend until Dreykov took control of all of your minds. Once you were given the serum, your memories were locked up inside your own heads—none of you could have talked about your past lives even if you’d wanted to. Your words were not your own. You didn’t know what was real and what was planted there. Sometimes you still don’t, and nothing terrifies you more than that.
You have no idea how many little girls the Viper funneled to Dreykov over the years, but it was probably a decent amount. His real bread and butter had always been sex trafficking, and he’s still doing it—on an even larger scale if your intel is correct (which, of course, it is). But he won’t be operating for much longer, not now that you’re so close you can almost taste the venom. You were barely 8 years old when you decided you would kill him, and now you have your chance. You are so close, closer than you’ve ever been, but he keeps slithering out of your grasp. And so you’re in Bucharest, again, looking for answers, again. But you have other business, too—almost as important, if not more so.
You head to the safehouse on the outskirts of the city. The building doesn’t look like much on the outside, but you’ve made sure the inside is comfortable enough for the women and children who live there. The matron greets you at the door and you hand her this month’s envelope, which contains enough cash to feed everyone for the next two months, keep the lights and the water on, and some extra to fix the plumbing issues that have been plaguing the building since you bought it.
The building can house about 40 people comfortably—it’s not nearly enough, and you’re determined to create as many safe spaces as you can, but it’ll do for now. For now, you have to select your charges according to a very strict criteria: they are all women and children (and the children of women) who have been bought and sold by the Viper. Some of them escaped on their own; some of them had assistance from you and the very few people you trust in the city. But all of them have suffered, and all of them have information that you need. Individually, it’s not much, but the more women you talk to, the more pieces of the puzzle you have to work with.
Besides for the cash drop, today you’re here to see the newest resident: Irina, a 19-year-old beauty your Bucharest contacts had managed to snatch from one of the sex clubs. Irina was delivered to the Viper at 12, and her life since then has been an endless nightmare that you can’t think about for too long without feeling physically ill. She’s sitting by the window in the living room, cupping a steaming mug of tea, when you approach her. You walk towards her slowly, and when Irina looks over at you, there is recognition in her eyes even though you’ve never met.
“You’re the Widow,” she says.
“Not anymore,” you reply. “But if that’s what you’d like to call me, go ahead. May I sit?” She gestures to the seat opposite her and you settle in for a chat. “I’d like to ask you some questions, Irina. Is that ok?”
“The others told me you’d be coming.” She speaks softly, her voice hoarse from screaming or crying or both. “I know what you’re trying to do. You’ll never catch him, you know.”
“I disagree,” you say, “but I need more information.”
“Alright,” she agrees, “if you think it will help,” and you begin the gentlest of interrogations.
Irina tells you that for the first several years after she was taken, she hadn’t heard anyone mention the Viper. She thinks that a lot of the girls probably knew about him or came directly from him, but no one would talk about it because it was too dangerous or traumatizing (or both). Things were different at her last club, though. When you ask her how many of the girls at Delirium knew about him, she tells you that several of them had passed through him somewhere along their journey. One of them—one far too young to be working there—even admitted that she’d been with him only two months earlier.
Finally, after all this time, you’ve got a clear line from point A to point B. You feel it in your bones that Delirium holds the answers, that if you can just get in and poke around a bit, you’ll be able to find him. You take Irina’s hands in yours and thank her for her help, and then you hear it: heavy footsteps coming down the hall. No woman or child in the building weighs enough to make a sound like that, and no men are allowed on the premises. You know who it is before you see him.

Bucky watches you enter the building from his position on the roof across the street. His contact had told him that there were whispers of a Widow safehouse at this address, though no one would dare set foot within 10 blocks of the place to find out. Bucky doesn’t believe the rumor, though. He knows you work alone, that you pride yourself on it. He assumes this is just one of many places where your targets meet their ends, and he knows enough about Bucharest to know that there are a lot of men in this city who fit your modus operandi.
Still, something is off. It’s not an empty building. There have been women and children coming and going all morning, and nearly all the apartments seem occupied. Why would you choose to do your dirty work in a place with so much activity, with so many innocents around? That seems not only impractical but beneath even you. He’s lost in these thoughts, checking each window with his binoculars, when he settles on a beautiful young girl staring out the window, looking desperately sad. She turns to look at someone he can’t see, and then he sees you emerge from the shadows and take a seat opposite her.
There’s a softness to your face—a gentle kindness—that knocks the wind out of him. Bucky can’t take his eyes off of you, analyzing your body language and facial expressions to try to figure out what the hell is going on. This is the last thing he expected to see, and he tells himself that this woman must be hiring you for a job—except the woman is nothing but a broken child and doesn’t look like someone who would be taking out a hit on somebody (and certainly not someone who could pay for one).
It’s unnerving, watching you this way, and Bucky is no longer sure that what he’s doing is right. There’s something about your interaction with this girl that makes him feel like a voyeur, witnessing an intimate moment that he should not be seeing but that fascinates him nonetheless. Still, he’s here, you’re his mission—albeit one he took upon himself—and he needs to finish it. By this time, Natasha and Steve are almost certainly on their way, and Bucky needs to get to you before they show up. He went rogue and committed to this plan; now he just has to execute it. He’ll deal with the consequences later.
Bucky makes his way across the street and around the back, where children’s toys litter the small yard of weeds and dirt. When he gets to the back door, he notices that it isn’t the usual ancient rusted lock that one finds on the old buildings in this neighborhood; it’s brand new tech. There’s a pretty decent security camera setup around the building, too.
What the hell is this place?
Bucky has two choices: he can rip the door off the hinges, or he can scale the building and climb in the open window on the top floor. You’re going to be homicidally pissed either way, so he might as well not destroy any property—you may be a monster, but the other tenants here look like civilians, and he doesn’t want to sacrifice their security in his quest to bring you in.
Bucky makes it into the building and weaves his way through the hallways. Along the way, he runs into a few women, and each one of them freezes when they see him. They are shocked and deathly afraid—a look he knows far too well—and they scurry back to their apartments and lock the doors. With his hair cut short, baseball cap pulled down, and leather jacket and glove hiding his prosthetic, it doesn’t seem possible that all of these women would immediately recognize him as the Winter Soldier. That’s what it feels like to him, though, and it’s a gut-punch sensation he does not like at all.
When he gets to the sitting room, the girl you are with has the same look of terror, and for a moment, so do you. But you snap back to yourself quickly—having gone from soft to terrified to hostile within a span of about 15 seconds. Before he can react, you stomp towards him, grab him by the jacket, and hiss, “Not here.”
Bucky hears you speak to the girl in Romanian, “Don’t be afraid, Irina. He’s a friend,” although he knows you think him anything but.
The second you get him into the hallway, you’ve got your knife to his throat. Even with your cold blade nicking his skin, Bucky fights the impulse to disarm you. He doesn’t want to fight you. He knows that he’s intruded on something here, though he doesn’t know what, and he actually feels guilty. He could break you in half if he wanted to, but he lets you pin him to the wall—lets you feel like you’re in control.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” you growl.
“You know why I’m here,” Bucky replies, but he doesn’t know—not really, not anymore. “What is this place?”
“It’s somewhere safe,” you say, “or it was until you showed up. No boys allowed, Soldat. Time to go.”
You catch him off guard when you flip him around and throw him through the nearest door, and before he can regain his balance, you kick him straight through the window and into the yard two storeys below. The fall is nothing to Bucky, and he knows that you know that, but it certainly made a statement. He looks up at the broken window he’d just crashed through and sees you peering out with a satisfied smile on your face.
Bucky calls up to you, “I just want to talk.”
“Bullshit,” you snap.
“I mean it,” he says, and he actually does. “You can pick the place.”
He watches as you consider his offer, weighing your options—you obviously don’t trust him, but it’s clear that the sanctity of this location is important to you. Now that he’s violated it, you can’t just let him wander off. You agree to meet with him that evening—in public, at a club in Old Town.
“Come alone, Soldat,” you call down to him, “and if you tell anyone about this place, I’ll throw you out a higher window.”
Bucky tries to hide his tiny smile but he knows you see it, just like he sees the little quirk of your lip just before you disappear. He hoists himself off the ground and brushes himself off. When he turns to leave, he sees a little girl holding hands with her mother. He has no idea how long they’ve been standing there, but the girl is pointing and giggling at him.
The little girl asks, “What happened to him, mama?”
“The Widow’s bite,” she replies.

“He’s not going to hurt her, Natasha,” Steve says as he prepares the Quinjet for landing.
“She might not give him a choice,” she replies, strapping herself in. “What the hell was he thinking coming here alone?”
“I don’t know,” Steve says. “There’s something about this girl that’s really gotten under his skin.”
Natasha looks at Steve, asking the question with her eyes she wouldn’t dare say aloud, and he picks up what she’s putting out.
“He’s not the Winter Soldier anymore. All of that programming… it’s gone. You know that. He’s just Bucky now.”
Natasha nods in agreement, but a part of her still has questions—not whether the deprogramming worked, she knows that it did, and she trusts Bucky with her life. No, Natasha’s concern is what is going on inside Bucky’s head. He was doing well, he was adjusting, he was finally ok, but the existence of you seems to have triggered something in him that the words never had. The words made him cold and empty and ready to comply, but you—you make him think, and Natasha knows how dangerous it can be to dwell too much on things you’ve left in the past.
When Steve and Natasha arrive at Bucky’s old apartment, it’s empty, but there are small signs of life—the indent of a head on the pillow on the floor in the corner, an apple core just starting to brown. He’s been there, and recently. Natasha and Steve don’t know who he would still have contact with in Bucharest, so they are left with nothing to go on. Bucky knows how to cover his tracks, and he left them just enough crumbs to get them to Bucharest but not enough that they could find him when they got there.
“He wants us to trust him,” Steve says, “to wait for him to bring her back here.”
“I can’t just sit around waiting for something to happen, Steve. I have a really bad feeling about this.”
“So what do you suggest we do?” Steve asks.
Natasha sighs and looks out the window. “I have no idea,” she replies, and that’s when she sees it: a piece of graffiti spraypainted on the wall of a building down the street—a coiled snake ready to strike.
The memory hits Natasha like a freight train. She knows that symbol. She knows what it means. She knows exactly who you’re looking for and it seems absurd to her now that she hadn’t thought of it before.
“Let me make a call,” she says. “I think I know why she’s here.”

It was a quite night for Gotham. Every person was busy with their own work and so were you, even if it was a little different from what people down below on the streets were doing. As of yet, you had stopped two muggings, busted a few armed two-face goons trying to rob a bank and were currently running across rooftops.
'Maybeee I can get off easy today, go home, microwave the pizza that has been waiting for me in the fridge, get a nice, warm shower and then straight to bed'
You hummed to yourself at the delightful thought as you sat on a gargoyle overlooking the city. You were enjoying the feeling of the light breeze on your face. It was soothing in a way. Not long after, you were startled by your comms crackling to life out of nowhere as you heard Oracle's automated voice in your ears.
"Batgirl I am going to need you to check out the area near Gotham Central Park for any visible strange activity. There are several missing persons reports filed this week that I have tied up to that particular region."
'So much for a warm bath and a good night's sleep, way to jinx yourself (Y/N), you dumbass'
"Isn't that park under construction or something? You know after the whole Justice League fiasco last month?", you questioned.
"Yep but people still go there, in the mornings for walks and at the nights for certain activities."
"Of course they do, I swear, people here are on a whole different level." You sighed. "Alrighty then Babs, I am on it."

After climbing up a couple of fire escapes and swinging off of numerous rooftops you finally reached your target destination. There was a deafening silence when your feet landed on the damp grass. You took in the misted surroundings and decided to look around for something out of the ordinary. There was a broken bright neon sign by the corner of the street which caught your attention, you could only make out the last bit, it spelled Parlor.
'That seems awfully familiar. Something about it is odd but I can't quite place my finger on it'
You were lost in thought when you felt someone move behind you, there was rather little time for you to react so you choose the 'hit first ask questions later' option. You clenched your fist, twisted your upper body and delivered a quick, staggering blow to the shady figure lurking behind.

"OWW!! WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!"

"HOOD?!"
Sure enough, Jason was on the ground clutching his ribs looking like a hurt puppy.
You moved your hands up and massaged you temples. You do not want to deal with him. Not today and if possible not ever. Even though you never let it show, you always avoided a run in with him. He may have become a part of the family again but you were far off from forgiving him.
You watched with narrowed eyes as he got to his feet and and dusted off the grass from his jacket.
"So on a Scale of one to Demon brat, how much do you hate me?", the smirk on his face and the way he wiggled his eyebrows at you almost made you want to smack him with a crowbar yourself.
"What? Dami?! I don't-- I don't hate Damian, he just gets on my nerves sometimes, something you do all the time.", you enjoyed, maybe a little too much, the way Jason's smirk turned into a small pout. You smiled a bit as you shook your head at his childishness.
"Before you start chucking batarangs at me I want to make this clear; No, Oracle did not send me here to be your backup or whatever, I just happen to be investigating the same thing which obviously led me here to you. So how about we work on this together and watch each other's back", Despite the uncertainty of your rejection, he sounded hopeful. It seemed as if he was ready to build the old, worn out bridges of your relationship back up again. It sent an unexpected warmth through your chest.
"Just like old times?"
"Just like old times.", Jason repeated as you both did a rather unsuccessful fist bump and grinned like idiots.

You walked up to the seemingly abandoned building, Jason examined the door for traps whereas you decided on taking a look through the glass window.
"Hey! I see a vent inside, maybe if we get to the roof-"

"Of course, just shoot open the lock and alert whoever's inside. What a great strategy! Why didn't I think of it?! Oh I know, because it's dumb!", you whisper shouted with a scowl. Jason just shrugged and tilted his head to the side, pointing towards the now open door.
"Ladies first, so lead the way, unless you're scared.", it was a playful challenge on Jason's part, one that you were more than ready to accept.
"Oh you're on Red."
You stepped inside and it was all business from there on. You took in the condition of the room; dusty desks, broken glass, oddly placed mannequins and footprints leading up ahead into a long hallway.
"They seem recent enough", Jason gave a slight nod at your discovery.
Considering the darkness of the hallway, you and Jason shared a look and switched on your night vision lenses. You both started taking cautious steps, the occasional soft thud of your boots being the only sound in the vicinity.
The end of the hallway was forked up and there were two rooms at the end of each passageway.
"How is this place so big! it didn't seem this huge from the outside", you could hear the exasperation in Jason's voice. You figured not getting to hit someone might be getting to him or that he was just bored.
"Look I will take the right, you take the left, our comms are already connected, if any one of us finds anything we tell the other and remember we do not engage in a fight alone. Am I clear or do you want me to write that down for you"
"Yes ma'am, but just so you know you are starting to sound like The old man", you rolled your eyes at his comment and went on ahead towards the right as he went the other way.

You scrolled through the torn down bookshelf kept in one of the rooms and you were making a mental note in your mind that there were a lot of medical journals in the bunch, when your comms buzzed.
"I am sorry", Jason whispered in a soft voice and you froze for a spilt second, eyes widening.
'No (Y/N) don't listen to him, he doesn't know what he is saying, just focus on finding those missing people and get this over with'
With that thought you tried continuing your investigation as if you had heard nothing.
"I said, I am sorry (Y/N). I know you heard me. I also know you've been avoiding me, cutting me out and you don't have to reply if don't feel like it but...I just wanted you to know..."
"Now is not the right time for this Hood and...for what it's worth I am not looking forward to a forgiveness session with you...", you felt awful for cutting him out the way you did, your heart clenched at the harshness of your words as you clicked off your comms, but you refused to have this discussion right now. If you were being more honest to yourself you just couldn't bear the emotions it would bring, so you chose the easiest way; completely shutting him out.
It was few minutes after the highly uncomfortable talk with Jason that a wall poster had caught your eye. You moved your hand over it, somewhat wiping off the dust, there was something scribbled on it making it harder for you to read the actual text. You squinted, trying to make out the words
"The people need...perfection...and that is what Pretty Dolls Parlor strives to achieve."
You scanned the area near poster for fingerprints and clicked your comms back on.
"Hood, get over here, I found something and I think this is the make or break kind of information", you were waiting for scan to complete, concern creeping up your mind when there was no reply from the other end.
"Red Hood? can you hear me?"
Nothing.
"Red?! Answer me Damnit!!"
A whole lot of Nothing.
As soon as you heard the chime of the scanner signaling its completion, you sped the other way towards the left corridor, towards Jason.
'Jay please be okay, please be okay, please be okay.'
By the time you reached Jason's location you were panting from the lack of breath and were already cursing yourself for bringing Jason along. To say that the man can take care of himself might be an understatement, he is basically a lone wolf, but still the thought of something happening to him while he was with you hurt like hell.
You looked around frantically and almost jumped out of your skin when you stepped on a gun. You heart almost stopped, it was Jason's. To make matters worse, there was no other sign of him or of were he went. You picked up the gun holding it securely in your hand. You could literally hear your heart pounding in your ears.
Suddenly, through the reflection from the glass window in front of you, you caught a glimpse of a man wearing a blank white face mask, you turned around, immediately switching to a fighting stance but that only did so much for you. A flashlight was switched on and shoved near your face, the night vision of your lens intensified the light, blinding you completely.
Before you could react, a metal pole connected straight with the back of your head and just like that you were lights out on the ground.

The Value of a Friend
Peter Parker is fairly surprised when a classmate, Y/N L/N, is able to figure out his secret identity as Spider-Man. He’ll come to rely on her over the next few months, although he may make a surprise discovery about his feelings for her on the school trip to Europe.

Peter Parker’s legs swing absentmindedly over the edge of the roof. There’s nothing much going on right now- brick, stucco, and metal as far as the eye can see. The lights of the city that never sleeps reflect off of the windows; a thousand sights and sounds and happenings littered down the boulevards. Despite all the comings and goings, the rush of people across the streets, nothing major has happened all night. Peter knows he technically shouldn’t be hoping for crime, but he does want at least one thing to happen to justify him staying up this late on patrol duty.
Peter’s got the usual mask pulled down over his face, disguising the heavy circles under his eyes. He may have superhuman strength and durability, but his powers don’t appear to help him run on less sleep. However, Peter’s used to staying up long nights patrolling. This particular moonlit outing isn’t unusual.
There’s a movement out of the corner of his eye, and Peter shifts to glance over at the orderly streets behind him. There- a girl walking down a sidewalk, her pace brisk and hurried to steer her quickly through an alleyway. With a rush, Peter realizes that he recognizes the girl. Her name is Y/N L/N, she’s in some of his classes. He wouldn’t exactly consider her a best friend, maybe more of an acquaintance. This isn’t due to any specific animosity, Peter just never really got the chance to talk to her. Sometimes, however, he wishes he had.
Y/N isn’t just smart like the other students in his class, she’s clever. Peter has seen the way her eyes light up when she figures something out, the same light that winks out from underneath her eyelashes when she laughs over a bad joke with her friends. Peter shakes himself for a second. Why is he thinking so much about her eyes? He shouldn’t have the way she smiles memorized at all, ready to call up at a moment’s notice.
Besides, Peter realizes with a dull chill, Y/N’s eyes are different from Peter’s on one grand scale. Y/N has no superpowered senses, and so she cannot tell that there are two or three men shadowing her as she wends through the streets. Peter curses softly, realizing that the men are definitely following her. Without a second thought, he leaps down from the building, swinging towards them on ropes of spider silk.
Peter’s goal was to take them out before they got close enough to reach Y/N. However, they were too far away and it doesn’t look like a secret rescue will be happening tonight. They’ve already cornered her in a narrow street, hands pulling guns out of coat pockets. Peter acts as quickly as he can- spiderweb launched at one, dragging him back against the wall of the street. The other Peter takes on directly, aiming a blow at the man’s head that knocks him backward before Peter hits him again. Peter would usually tie the thugs up and leave them for some other soul to deal with, but the men are already running away without a second’s hesitation and he doesn’t much feel like trying to track them down.
There’s a soft sound behind him, like a gasp of breath, and Peter turns around to see Y/N standing there, looking shaken but unhurt. Peter panics for a moment before remembering that his mask is still snugly in place. She would have no way of knowing him. Peter takes a hesitant step closer, reaching out his hands to show that he means no harm. “I’m, uh, Spider-Man. Are you alright?”
Y/N shakes her head hastily. “No, I’m fine. Thank you for saving me from those guys.” Peter waves a hand. “No problem. All in the job description, you know?” Y/N laughs, but the sound dies slowly from her lips as she stares at him. Her head cocks slightly to the side, as if she’s considering something. She raises a hand slowly to point at him like she’s unsure of a truth but determined to say it nonetheless.
“Are you Peter Parker?” Peter stiffens, turning hurriedly to make sure that nobody could have heard her. Dimly, he realizes that he should have denied this first instead of acting like this was something to be hidden. “Uh, no. I don’t know who that is.” The lie sounds fake even to his own lips. A small smile is growing over Y/N’s lips, as if she’s incredulous. “You are. Peter Parker from chem class is Spider-Man.”
Peter figures that the game is up, so he tugs his mask from his head. Y/N’s eyes dart to his face, washing over every detail as if in awe. “It’s true. You’re actually Spider-Man?” Peter nods thickly. “How did you know it was me?” A slight blush forms in Y/N’s cheeks. “I, uh, you looked familiar.” Peter raises an eyebrow. “I was wearing a mask.” Y/N blushes harder. “You have the same voice. Is that better? You sound the exact same.”
Peter lets out a huff of breath at that. He can’t deny it- he’s messed around with voice settings on the suit before but never bothered to permanently give himself a different-sounding voice as Spider-Man. Now he’s paying the price for it. “Maybe.” A slight smile tugs at the corners of Y/N’s lips. “You were ready to be Spider-Man but you didn’t even have an excuse prepared to explain yourself?” Peter feels defensive. “Well, most people don’t actually figure it out. You’re the first, actually. Well, I had to tell Ned but only because he saw me crawling on the ceiling. I didn’t realize he was there, though. I don’t usually crawl on ceilings.”
Peter realizes he’s rambling and does his best to stop talking. Y/N’s smiling at him again, and he feels surprisingly fine about it. “I would hope not. Crawling on ceilings is kind of hard to explain away.” Peter scratches the back of his head, suddenly self-conscious. “Yeah, that’s kind of why I had to tell him.” Y/N flashes him a grin. “Well, I appreciate the rescue, Peter-Not-Spider-Man. I’ll see you in class?” Suddenly, Peter doesn’t want to leave. “I can walk you home if you like? I hear it’s kind of dangerous out here.” Y/N nods her approval. “Sure thing. Just make sure you put your mask back on first.”
Peter becomes friends with Y/N after that. There’s almost no way not to- she knows the biggest secret of his life, how could they not be friends? Ned is thrilled to find another ‘Friend of Spider-Man’, as he dubs Y/N, and the three of them get along surprisingly well. MJ, too, is glad to see Y/N around, although MJ has yet to discover Peter’s secret. At the rate he’s going, though, Peter has a shifting feeling that she’ll find out soon enough.
It’s after one of his late night patrol rounds that Peter finds himself knocking on Y/N’s window. He’s slumped against the window sill, hand pressed to his side. There was a mass robbery on the East Side, something Peter stupidly thought he could handle without a second thought. He stopped the robbery, that was true, but they’d managed to fire off several shots with some newfangled weaponry that even Tony would have to take a second look at. The result is this: a bloody cut on his side that doesn’t look like it will be going away any time soon.
After a couple of seconds, Y/N throws open her window. She leans out, eyes widening when she sees Peter still dressed in his Spider-Man suit. “What’s going on?” She hisses, then her gaze finds the bloody slit on his side. “What is that?” She glances behind her, as if making sure everyone is asleep, then gestures hurriedly for him to climb through the window after her. “Quick, come in.” Once Peter’s standing in her room, Y/N closes the window, then leans against it, staring at the blood on his hands and the nervous look in his eyes.
“What happened?” Peter grimaces. “Robbery. Bit off a little more than I can chew. Do you have a first aid kit? I think I need to get this bandaged up but if I go home now Aunt May will freak out. I can’t stress her anymore, and I don’t think Ned knows how to stop bleeding.” Y/N shakes her head. “Gotcha. Give me a second, I can grab some supplies.” Y/N heads out of her room, reappearing in a minute or so with a box of bandages and medical supplies held triumphantly in front of her. 
She directs Peter to sit on a chair by her desk, and he does so, careful not to get any blood on, well, anything. Y/N takes a seat opposite him, bandages and an antibiotic for disinfecting the wound in her hands. Her brow furrows as she begins to treat the wound, and Peter can’t help but let his gaze linger across the determined look in her eyes, the slight curve of her lips as she focuses on the cut on his side.
After a while she straightens up, and Peter looks away hurriedly, feeling a slight blush heat up his cheeks. “I think that should hold you for a while. You said you had superhuman strength and stuff like that, right? You’ll probably be able to sleep it off.” Peter climbs back through the window, but just before he swings away he turns back, leaning his head through the opening to Y/N’s room. “Thanks a lot, Y/N. I mean it. I can’t think of anyone else I could turn to.” Y/N smiles at him, a smile that seems to light up the whole room. “No problem, Peter. If you’ve got my back, I’ve got yours.”
Peter is certainly grateful for his friendship with Y/N over the next couple of months. He ends up making a couple more stops by her room for help patching up various injuries, and when he has to deal with the aftermath of Tony’s death, she’s always there with some way to hear him out and cheer him up. Honestly, he doesn’t know what he would do without her.
When Peter gets word of the school trip to Europe, he thinks it’s the best thing that could happen to him in a while. Time to himself, with friends, touring interesting places. He’s hoping that a change in scene will finally let him breathe for a second, let him put aside the mask and suit and be Peter Parker once more. However, the appearance of the suit in his suitcase and one Nick Fury convinces him that this trip won’t just be a vacation, however much he wants it. Hopefully, he’ll have time to tell MJ how he feels in between the attacks of the elementals.
MJ. What is Peter supposed to do about MJ? He knows he has feelings for her, that much is obvious. He had a plan, carefully laid out steps that would culminate in Peter telling MJ he loves her and presenting her with a black dahlia necklace. However, as the fights with the elementals grow and grow, he has a feeling that won’t entirely work out. What is he supposed to do now?
He’s confessed his plan to Ned, just to hear another point of view. He told Y/N actually, at a different point in time. She’d seen the necklace and was wondering if he had a sudden taste in jewelry. It was strange, though, the second Peter had told her how he felt about MJ Y/N had gotten this sudden look, like she was shuttering the light in her eyes closed against the world. The sight of her, the smile slipping from her lips, made Peter feel like he’d done something terribly wrong. He just couldn’t figure out what it was. Y/N seemed fine after that, but he did notice that she stopped talking about the dahlia necklace or anything in the plan at all.
Things with the elementals end up going from bad to worse. Peter finds out that the man he thought was his friend, Quentin Beck, was actually the one behind the elementals all along. In fact, the elementals were nothing more than elaborate holograms, and Peter had gone and given Beck control over E.D.I.T.H. in the form of Tony’s glasses. Mr. Stark’s last gift to him, and Peter had tossed it away in a moment of misplaced trust.
It’s not like Peter is alone, though. MJ found out about Peter’s secret identity as Spider-Man, and now she, Y/N, and Ned are figuring out how to take down Mysterio alongside Peter. Peter feels a sudden rush of gratitude as he looks back at his friends. With people like them, people that matter that much to him, Peter feels like he could take on the world. And with Mysterio’s control over E.D.I.T.H., he just may have to.
The battle ends up going surprisingly well. Peter manages to turn the tide on Mysterio, refusing to fall for any of the man’s schemes and tricks. In the end, he is able to wrest control of E.D.I.T.H. away from Mysterio, thus enabling him to remove all of the drones and end the man’s plans once and for all. Now that the fight is over, though, Peter almost doesn’t know what to do.
He finds himself stumbling down Tower Bridge, limping from all of the various injuries he’s managed to obtain during the fight. The first thought in his head is that he should look for Y/N, for the one girl he always turns to whenever he needs help. Then MJ runs out from among the cars, and Peter focuses instead on her. She dashes over to him, throwing her arms around him and telling him that yes, everyone is okay and yes, he saved them all.
Distantly, Peter can see the figures of Ned and Y/N approaching, but it’s alright. They’re his friends, he doesn’t have to worry about pulling his mask back on. Peter pulls away, fishing around in his pocket for the black dahlia necklace. He feels crushed to see that it’s in pieces, but MJ says something about how she likes it better broken. It’s funny, though- Y/N has always been able to fix things. To fix him.
Peter pushes Y/N out of his mind. He’s not thinking about his friend, he’s thinking about MJ. MJ, the girl he loves, the girl who is right in front of him. The girl who’s just leaned forward and kissed him. Peter lets himself kiss her back, lets himself lean into her and block out the rest of the world. There’s the screech of traffic echoing around him from the parts of the city that haven’t yet shut down, and that is what drags Peter back to reality.
They break apart after a few seconds. MJ starts to step away, saying something about how she should probably get going before too many people see familiar Midtown students with Spider-Man. Peter nods, noting that Ned and Y/N have changed direction upon seeing MJ head their way once more. There’s a strange expression on Y/N’s face, a strange emptiness that hadn’t been there before. Peter wants to go run after her, to say something to make that quiet sorrow go away, but his feet feel leaden in place and all he can do is watch as she walks away.
Peter gets back to his hotel room late that night. Ned files in after him, chuckling softly about how his best friend managed to save the day and get with MJ in one go. However, Ned’s face falls as he says this. “Did you really have to kiss her in front of Y/N, though?” Peter frowns over at his friend. “What do you mean?” Ned spreads his hands. “Well, you know, because Y/N likes you. I thought it would be kind of mean to kiss MJ when she was right there.”
Peter feels like the ground is falling away underneath his feet. “Y/N likes me?” Ned nods. “Didn’t you know? She’s had a crush on you for a while now. Sorry, Peter, I thought you knew. I probably shouldn’t have told you that.” Peter waves away his friend’s apology, already heading to the door. Ned’s voice stops him. “You won’t be able to find her. She was scheduled to take an earlier trip home. Remember? It was planned out earlier in the month. She had to make it home early for some family reason, she talked about it on the flight.” Peter remembers this now, and his stomach turns at the thought of Y/N on that plane, all alone and stuck with the picture of him and MJ kissing.
Ned turns away to pack his suitcase, but Peter can’t think about anything productive at all. He’s beginning to realize that he’s made a very big mistake, something he can only hope to undo. There was a reason he hadn’t felt anything when he kissed MJ, when it had been awkward and emotionless. It wasn’t just because they were tired teenagers and didn’t know what to do, it was because he didn’t love her at all. No, the girl Peter loved is on a plane right now, and she thinks that Peter doesn’t care about her when it couldn’t be further from the truth.
What is he supposed to do? Y/N will hate him for this. Somehow, that one thought is enough to motivate him to reach towards his suitcase, to start packing again. He has to make it back, has to find his way home to tell Y/N how he really feels. He can only hope that Y/N will let him stick around long enough to say it.
Y/N doesn’t come to her window for a long time after Peter knocks. He’s almost beginning to think that it’s a lost cause and she’ll never want to speak to him again when the sash gently opens and Y/N leans out. She’s usually used to seeing Peter crouched on her windowsill, but for some reason she startles at seeing him like it’s his first time visiting.
Peter speaks softly, his voice barely louder than the wind. “I think I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life.” Y/N holds up a hand. “I don’t need any explanations. You can do whatever you want, you didn’t have to come by.” Peter shakes his head. “Yes, I did. I know you had feelings for me once. I was kind of hoping that you hadn’t changed your mind about me.”
Peter ends up leaving Y/N’s room much later. He has a grin that he can’t seem to shake, and a bounce in his step that doesn’t fade for hours. He might just have managed to save himself, to convince the girl he loves that she should take a chance and stay with him. Besides, he’s kissed her enough to say a thousand words.

If you thought Jayson was attractive in athleisure wear, he’s even more of a heart-throb in his usual streetwear, sporting a well-maintained leather jacket over a tank top and steel-toed boots. He greets you with a tiny bouquet that he fashions into a corsage for you, and then he takes you to an arcade with a beat-up facade but a lively interior. He tells you that his brother used to take him here when he was little more than a hatchling, and he’s happy to support a business that’s still thriving when it still has an active gaming community and good food.
He comes prepared with rolls of quarters and a competitive spirit, and you spent hours playing air hockey and head-to-head fighting games. He can barely squeeze into the seats for the racing games but that doesn’t stop him from laughing, and you laugh right along with him for what feels like forever. He takes no prisoners shooting hoops and you think your eyes would water if you gave the same focus he does to chasing down the ghosts in Mrs. Pac-Man, but after all the tickets are traded in, you get a giant stuffed gator—“My less attractive cousin,” says Jayson—and matching mood rings to commemorate the occasion. Putting them on feels like you’re having a shotgun wedding in Vegas somewhere, surrounded by neon lights and the wiggly 90’s patterns on the carpets.
You stash the gator in his truck and he takes you out to dinner at the mall, and you have to laugh when he balances curly fries on his snout like a carb-based moustache. Jayson seems to thrive when you’re laughing—he seems to magnify your energy and enjoys building you up as a result. You have some spare time before your movie date, so you go window shopping and try on all kinds of different outfits. You’re surprised to find that Jayson looks great sporting a cowboy hat, and you laugh when he pairs it with a set of pinstripe bell-bottoms in a pretty shade of lilac.
You lose track of time and have to scurry into the movie theatre like a pair of giggly teenagers, nearly spilling your drinks on your way up to the back of the darkened room where the bigger seats are. You spend most of the film trying not to be too obnoxious to the other film-goers, but you’re too into Jayson to focus on whatever action flick you both chose at the box office, and it’s clear that Jayson feels the same. You flick popcorn into his open mouth and he wraps his arm around your shoulders, tucking you as close as he can. The armrest between you gets frustrating for him, however, and it’s not long until you find yourself sitting on one of Jayson’s huge thighs.
You don’t have the heart to tell him that it’s murder for your tailbone; his muscles are hard as steel.
You whisper to him that you may as well have become that stuffed gator, so dearly does he hold you, but he whispers, “You’re easier on the eyes,” back to you in the dark. You spend the second half of the movie cuddling against his chest and playing with his big, thick hand, toying with the webbing between his fingers until he chuckles and tells you that it tickles him. His lap becomes much less uncomfortable as time goes on, and you realise with a flutter in your chest that Jayson’s nerves had led to tense muscles, and he’s relaxing around you as time goes on.
By the time you get back to his truck, the streetlamps have been lit for hours, and you’re both reluctant to stop touching. Soft pop music floats from the speakers when the engine turns over, and Jayson reaches over to turn it down even lower just to talk with you. He starts planning your next date with all the eagerness of a child at Christmas, and you’re not even the least bit offended by his presumptuousness; this date has been the best you’ve had in a long time—possibly ever. The chemistry is there, bubbling away below the surface as you hold hands at red lights.
When you get home, he walks you to the door of your apartment and squeezes your hands before you finally part, leaving you a butterfly-addled mess as you watch him drive away. He texts you when he gets home safely and you shoot messages back and forth late into the night until you fall asleep cuddling your new stuffed toy, cell phone in hand and a smile on your face. He texts you good morning the next day and asks if he can swing by to take you out for coffee, which you happily accept.
This begins a ritual of going on little mini-dates all throughout the week, and you start hanging out at each others’ apartments after you finish up at the office or Jayson at his studio, cooking each other meals and watching more movies. One night, you both fall asleep on your couch and by the time you wake, it’s the early morning hours, so you invite Jayson into your bedroom and let him sleep with you in your bed. You learn very quickly that Jayson is a massive cuddler, which would normally bother you through overheating except for the fact that Jayson is cool to the touch and a kleptotherm in his sleep. You find him as refreshing as the cool side of the pillow most nights he spends over, and it’s cute to watch him burrow under the covers for warmth.
You end up all but moving into his apartment, mostly for his comfort. His apartment is much bigger since he’s huge, and while you’ve never minded your little cubbyhole, you certainly welcome the change just to see him walk through doors without having to duck. You’re both still as tactile as ever, but it’s never gone further than a few heated kisses and heavy petting—something you’re determined to change tonight. You spend all day swinging wildly between knowing that everything will be fine and anxiety over the possibility of making an ass of yourself, but when the time comes, you feel an odd sense of calm.
“What’s all this?” Jayson asks when he gets out of the shower, eyeing the chair you’ve placed in the living room and meandering over to sit on it without so much as waiting for your response.
“A present,” you say, shrugging out of your bathrobe and exposing your form-fitting outfit. You’d spent the whole week worrying about what to wear, but you finally found something that made you look and feel the sexiest you’ve ever felt. You put on the music you’d been practising to and approach Jayson, who’s now looking at you like he’s seeing you for the first time.
“Oh, yeah?” he prompts, reaching out towards your hips. You bat his hands away with a flirty smile—denying him his touch for the first time.
“Yeah,” you reply in a sultry purr, stroking down his bare chest before you step away and begin to dance. Jayson keeps his eyes on you in a way that he’s never done before, making heat pool low in your belly as you sway your hips and maneuver around his chair. You pepper little touches on his skin here and there as you go, pulling away before he can react or reach out to you. This seems to rankle and rouse Jayson as time goes on, making him twitch and fidget in his chair until you finally settle on his lap.
You are not expecting to sit directly on the mass straining against the crotch of his jeans.
“Jayson!” you laugh, and he laughs along with you, tension releasing from his body.
“What?” he chuckles, greedily stroking cool-hot lines along your back and sides. “Can’t blame a guy for getting excited. You plan this all for me?”
“Yeah,” you murmur, suddenly feeling shy. “We’ve been taking it slow. I figured it was time we got to know each other better.”
“Mm,” Jayson hums, looking you over from head to toe. “I like the lace.”
“I thought you might,” you say around a smile, snapping at the waistband of the lace panties you’d made sure peeked up over the waistband of your bottoms. You pull off the top half of your clothes so that you and Jayson are both shirtless, biting your lip as you stroke along the smooth scales of his chest. “Well? Take me to bed.”
“Yes, sir,” Jayson replies, hefting you up into his arms and tossing you over his shoulder to fireman carry you into the bedroom. There, he carefully deposits you onto the bed and strips out of his jeans, letting you get your first look at the pink, wet cock that’s slipped out of the slit in his body. You grimace, then shake your head, moving to grab one of your favourites from the nightstand. “I was planning on it.”
“You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you?” he asks, amused and impressed as he climbs up onto the bed to join you.
“Only obsessively for the past two weeks,” you casually reply, mirroring his grin before you get to work opening yourself for his viewing pleasure. Jayson watches you like a starved man watching through the window into a bakery, practically salivating at all of the treats he couldn’t get his hands on. As you work, squirming on your fingers and then toys, you notice a strange gurgling noise coming from Jayson, somewhere between a growl and a click. You stop mid-thrust when you realise what it is. “Are you purring?”
Jayson laughs, embarrassed. “Yeah,” he says, stroking along the insides of your thighs. “My kind does that when we want in.”
“That’s so fucking cute,” you reply around your delighted smile, urging Jayson down into your own brand of kisses. Lizardfolk don’t exactly have soft, pliable lips, but his long tongue delves deep into your mouth, tangling with yours and leaving you breathless. 
“I think that’s enough,” Jayson whispers after another long interim wherein you stretch yourself out, helping you pull the toy you were using out and stroking your skin before he lines himself up. “Ready?”
You nod, biting your lip as you watch him push inside you until your eyes roll back and you groan from deep in your chest. “Oh, fuck,” you murmur, scrabbling blindly and finding Jayson already reaching for you, fingers sliding between yours until you hit webbing. “Sunny.”
“I’m here,” Jayson murmurs back, voice soft and strained. “Gods, you’re a vice.”
You can only make a gurgling noise of your own as he slowly and carefully works his way in, relief flooding you both when he finally bottoms out. “Is it in?” you slur, giggling drunkenly at the endorphins rushing through you.
Jayson snorts sharply, startled into a guffaw. “Fuck you.”
“Thought we were doing that already.”
“Not yet,” says Jayson, chuckling softly. “Hold onto me.”
You barely have time to do as you’re bid before he’s jackhammering into you, pounding shout after shout of ecstasy from your throat as you cling to his muscles and the bedding. Jayson is a skilled lover, changing his tempo and how hard he fucks you until you’re all but speaking in tongues, toes curling and legs clinging around his waist as he plays your body like a fiddle. He knows exactly when and where to touch you after just one round, and after what feels like hours of marathon sex, you tap yourself out on his arm.

Jayson chuckles as he steps into the bathroom, turning on the shower with one hand. “No, but I was hoping you would.”
“Really?” You’re momentarily distracted by the warmth of the shower’s spray against your back when Jayson steps in with you, and you melt like putty against his chest.
“As much as I love you,” he murmurs into your ear, making your heart dance a giddy little merengue in your chest. You smile against his skin and bury your face against his neck, chuckling as a thought strikes you.

Magnus made his way around the sprawling architecture of the New York Institute, looking for the wing of living quarters. The buttresses that framed the familiar third-story window would have made fair footholds for scaling the building, but there were better methods available to him. Twisting his index and middle fingers, he summoned a dense amalgamation of magic beneath his feet that expanded upwards. Fortunately, Alec had left the window unlatched and slightly ajar, allowing Magnus to slip through and land soundlessly in a crouch.
Just as he straightened up, the bathroom door opened and damp steam from the shower billowed out. Alec emerged, naked save for a towel wrapped around his waist, but when he caught sight of Magnus, an almost smug smile pulled at his lips. “Hey,” he greeted, striding over to kiss him softly, one hand gently cradling Magnus’ cheek while the other held the towel in place at his hipbone.
“Is this for me?” Magnus teased, running the soft outer part of his forefinger along the damp skin of Alec’s bare chest. “How thoughtful.”
Alec laughed boisterously, his ears faintly pink with a warm blush. “Sorry to disappoint you but that was just a happy accident. Patrol ran late and I had to deal with— Well, that doesn’t really matter.”
Clicking his tongue in disapproval, Magnus shook his head. “How can I be disappointed with this outcome, unintentional as it may be.” He skated his palms up to Alec’s upper back and reverently drew them down across the planes of muscle until he got down to the small of his back. His fingertips dug into the soft skin above his buttocks needfully, pressing just hard enough that his blunt nails would leave behind little crescents if one were to look hard enough. “I still come out victorious in this scenario, I think.”

The way that Alec smiled at him, tired and weary but endlessly soft, made Magnus feel like his heart were being squeezed just this side of painful. It was the most vulnerable he had ever seen him, and it was simply theirs to share.
“Hey, Magnus… Why did you agree to this, us, like this?” Alec gestured vaguely. His eyebrows drew tightly together in consternation, and Magnus fought the urge to kiss the skin between into relaxing. “Why are you willing to hide with me?”
It had been a few weeks since their conversation about an arranged marriage for the sake of preserving the Lightwood legacy and foothold in the New York Institute. Maybe it was some kind of desperation that had driven Magnus to be so cavalier about his willingness to accept the “don’t ask, don’t tell” mentality of shadowhunters. The thought of losing the first spark of hope in love that he had had in over a century was excruciating, and concealing it so meticulously was a high price, but he was paying it. In a way, though, keeping this fragile thing between them a secret, left to grow in discretion, felt a little like a relief. Whatever it may be with time, it was theirs alone.
At the silence, Alec licked his lips nervously and started to say something.
Instead, Magnus held up a finger to his mouth to quiet him anticipatorily. Through a roguish grin, he said, “I’m going to need you to put on some underwear before you say anything else. I want to give that question the answer it deserves, but that’s a tremendous ask when you’re up against me like this.”
Alec rolled his eyes as if it were nothing more than a line, but there was something in his eyes that betrayed his self-satisfaction. And that was exactly what Magnus had intended. “All right, well then, look away.”
Magnus turned his back with exaggerated movements and crossed his arms over his chest with a smile. It was nice to have someone to be this way with again; it felt like liberation to have someone with whom he was free to be himself without the burden of titles and expectations. He was exposed when he stripped away the personas and facades that were like secondary skins. They were facets of himself that people expected him to have, but Alec never seemed to want him to be anything but Magnus. Not Magnus Bane, not High Warlock Bane, not Prince Regent of Edom.
“Are you decent?” Magnus teased after the sounds of fabric on skin had subsided.
In response, Alec came up behind him and leaned in just enough that his chest brushed Magnus’ back. “All done.”
Magnus shifted his weight to lean back into Alec lightly and reached back to thread his fingers into Alec’s still-damp hair. Softly scratching his nails through the soft strands made Alec hum contentedly. “We should sit so we can discuss your question.”
“Can we lay down?”
“Of course.”
They climbed on the bed over the sheets and comforter, and Alec immediately rolled over so Magnus could curl up behind him. He even lifted his arm away from his chest so Magnus could slide an arm over his hip bone and anchor his hand on his abdomen. This was something they had done once before—bearing their heart to anyone was hard for both of them, but this way made it a little easier.
Magnus took a slow breath, gathering his thoughts appropriately. “You’re a possibility, Alexander. A beautiful, liberating possibility that I’ve never had the fortune to come across in all my life.”
Ever melancholy, Alec replied, “How can you feel that way when I’m basically shoving you back in the closet with me, and asking you to sneak around and be ashamed of something that should be so simple. It makes me feel like a child to ask you to…stoop this low.”
“It was my choice, Alec. I chose to put myself in the position I’m in. And for the record,” Magnus added, pressing his lips to the back of Alec’s ear, “I’m glad that I did.”
Alec pressed back perceptibly closer to him, ducking his head to press into the crook of Magnus’ neck in a self-soothing gesture. “You’re not just saying that so that I feel less guilty, right? Because it doesn’t work if you don’t mean it.”
Many times throughout Magnus’ life he had been in the position of feeling at the disadvantage with the people he loved. He worried himself sick over whether he was being too clingy, too transparent, too vulnerable, and then he overcorrected and worried about being too aloof, too distant, and too unavailable. The cyclical questioning and self-doubt had ruined a lot of encounters before they even had the chance to become something concrete. Even now, there was a seed of doubt about what he was doing with Alec—maybe he was giving him too much credit, and maybe putting his own heart on the line was naïve.
“I don’t have the luxury of knowing what will come of this, Alexander,” he said carefully, “but I am certain that never giving it the chance would be something I would always regret. Will I always be content to be the soul of discretion in regards to you and what we may feel? Likely not. But you didn’t ask me for forever, and I’m not asking you either. I think both of us just needed the chance to be worth the risk of seeing it through to whatever end it might reach.”
Warm calloused fingers made their way down Magnus’ arm to lace between his own and squeeze gently. “I can live with that.”
Magnus chuckled and pressed a kiss to Alec’s hair. “I hope you can do more than that.”
“Mmm.” Alec yawned and rolled slightly, taking Magnus with him. “For now, though, I’m just going to sleep with it.”
“‘It’ being me?”
“By the angel,” Alec groaned, exasperated yet fighting a smile. “You talk too much sometimes.” Before Magnus could reply, he had captured his lips in a languorous kiss. Each one they shared felt like a discovery that Alec relished, unrehearsed and uncertain but wholehearted in the best way. The anticipation and enthusiasm of each new moment they shared was somehow so much better than any shared with Magnus’ most experienced ex-lovers.
Magnus pulled away just enough that their lips parted but their noses still touched. “I thought you wanted to sleep.”
“This is even better than my white noise machine. Having you here is…peaceful.”
“Aren’t you a romantic,” Magnus said dryly. But when Alec pulled him close again, he was helpless to resist.

Broken-Style Remix: The Red Hood & Shadow Hunter (Jason Todd & Bellatrix Todd)
Broken: So, I happened to read one of @anxiousnerdwritings's works about Jason Todd and Damian's Twin sister being a team and going against Bruce and the Bat-Family who want Damian's twin sister with them. This idea came to mind and I thought you would like it. Let the words weave and enjoy!

Quick Note: Bellatrix's Name is Shadow Hunter - Her Armor is like Jason's but it is more wolf-like (My personal touch) and has a bit more tech to it.
Blue eyes forced through the magnifying glasses on the face of the Eldest Wayne Heir, yet the one who cast the name aside for one that better understood her and a family that would better understand her than the Dark Knight or his gaggle of infants ever could. She sat in the darkroom - well, not entirely dark; the sparks from the tools in her hand made occasional lights that illuminated the room every now and then, plus there was the desk lamp on the workbench - shining light on the hand & forearm model and the gadget in the making that Bellatrix was working on. It was an attachment to her suit - Claws that gave a lightning discharge. She could use it to knock someone out or remove them completely with enough voltage but she won't do that - she won't live on the Al Ghul Blood, she won't be like Talia Al Ghul or the boy she once called brother.
Speaking of brothers.
"Another all-nighter?" A familiar voice called out, causing Bellatrix to turn off the tools, placed them down, and turn in her seat while lifting the goggles off her face to look at the man in the doorway with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Yeah, I wanna make sure the claws are ready for our next patrol." Bellatrix explained as she pulled the goggles off her head and placed them on the table before getting up and walking over to Jason, who gave her the coffee cup once she was in front of him. "Thanks." She said as she took a sip.
"No problem, what are brothers for?" Jason asked with a smirk.
"Other than entering their little sister's workroom without knocking?" Bellatrix asked with a raised eyebrow.
"As your brother, I have a right to invade your privacy for the greater good." Jason said with a smirk.
"And to be nosy." Bellatrix added as she walked past him.
"And to be..." He stopped when he realized what he was gonna say, "Hey! I'm not nosy!" He yelled as he followed behind her to the kitchen where breakfast was waiting.
[Later That Night]
Shadow Huntress secured her clawed boots shut before standing to look at the modified claws before sliding them on and latching them closed. She then positioned her right hand as if she was going to strike with her claws and smiled as the light blue electric current waves ran flowed from the bottom of her forearm to the tip of her claws; the tried with her other arm and everything was perfect. She grabbed her sword in one hand and her mask in the other before heading out to see what Hood was doing.
"Anything?" Huntress asked.
"They're still moving - I think they might be hiding to the abandoned warehouse on the edge of town; you know, the one near the waterfront." Red Hood said.
"I think that's where they are heading. Look." Huntress hits some keys on the supercomputer and the cameras in that area showed the factory. "See those boats? They're new, no one has been in that district and it's the only place to do a deal uninterrupted because the cops don't patrol that area anymore." Huntress explained.
"Then, we have our place. Let's move out." Red Hood said as he placed on his helmet and Huntress did the same - both masks locked into place and the two of them were out of there.
[Gotham Rooftops]
Red Hood soared through the open spaces of the backstreets of Gothan while the Shadow Huntress ran across the roofs with the speed and prowess of a wolf on the hunt. She leaped for a high roof and used her claws to climb to the top before running and jumping to the next one while Red Hood attached his rope to another point and began to swing.
The two of them landed on the roof at the same time - a vantage point that showed the trucks driving into the warehouse and the men that stood out to keep watch; not seeing the two hunters crouching on the roof, waiting and watching.
"What do we got?" Red Hood asked. Huntress placed her fingers on the control pad of her mask's visor to activate heat-vision mode - seeing the heat signatures in the building.
"There's about 25 of them - not counting the ones that are waiting outside." Huntress explained.
"What do you think we should do about it?" Red asked.
"We take out the guys outside, then we find the generator and cut the power; under the cover of darkness, we take them out - one by one." Huntress explained.
"What if they see us or hear the noise?" Red asked.
"Then we beat the hell out of them." Huntress said as the two of them rose to their feet and jumped down.
Everything was going good until Jason decided the throw someone through the window, everyone was high alert - it was ass-kicking time.
Red Hood and Shadow Huntress were knocking thugs down left and right, showing the combos that brother and sister made together. Huntress saw one of the thugs pointing his gun at Red Hood and jumped in the way, taking the bullet in the side but she still stood. She cracked her hand in the claw formation and the lightning came to life, causing her to pounce on the thugs, knocking them out through electrical waves while Red just beat the hell out of them.
When the last thug fell, Huntress grunted as she held the bleeding hole in her side, causing Red to run to her.
"Huntress, you alright?" He asked.
"I'll be fine. Let's get out of here and we can get it patched up." Huntress said as she rose to her feet and the 2 of them jumped through the window. They scaled the wall of the roof to stop and breathe for a moment while Jason removed the bullet that got stuck and clean the wound before wrapping it. They were waiting when Huntress's Robotic Wolf Ears shot up at the sound of footsteps - 4 pairs of them, she groaned.
"They're here." Huntress groaned and just when she said that 4 Figures landed on the roof in front of them.
The Dark Knight - Batman, a.k.a Bruce Wayne; Bellatrix's Father.
The Latest Robin - Damian Wayne; Bellatrix's Womb Mate.
Nightwing - Dick Grayson.
Batgirl - Barbara Gordon; the Police Commissioner's Daughter.
"What the hell do you 4 want?" Red Hood said as he rose to his feet.
"We received reports about gunfire in this region, we came to investigate." Batman said to Jason, but his eyes remained on Bellatrix, who just glared at him.
"There was a Firearms Deal going on and we put a stop to it before it could have even begun." Huntress said as she rose to her feet and stood beside Red Hood; Nightwing looked over the edge and whistled.
"They put a stop to it alright - everyone is laid out." He said.
"Laid out? You killed them?" Batgirl asked.
"We're not above killing but we try not to, per Huntress's request." Red Hood said as he gestured at his sister.
"You don't kill but you partner yourself with a killer? How backward you are, Bellatrix." Damian said.
"It is no business of yours, Wayne." Huntress growled.
"You're my sister, so it is my business, and you're a Wayne too; as well as an Al Ghul." Damian countered but Bellatrix scoffed.
"I've never been an Al Ghul, that's why you and your mother cast me aside; the only one who saw any worth in me in that family was my grandfather. Just like you wiped your hands of me back then, I wiped my hands of you - you're nothing to me but a stranger I happen to share my blood with." Huntress said.
"Bellatrix, that's enough." Bruce said.
"You have no say over me, Bat-Boy; I don't have to listen to you." She said.
"I am your father, you need to listen to me." Bruce said.
"I may have your blood but I damn sure don't have to listen to a damn thing you have to say because I don't live with you, nor do I work with you." Huntress said.
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Bellatrix, you've been hanging around Jason for too long, it's making you reckless and dangerous. I think it's time you came to live with me, with us, with your family. There is a room waiting for you at Wayne Manor and we can talk about patrols and missions once you get settled in but you need to be with us now; Todd is a bad influence on you." Bruce said.
"You're joking." She said.
"No, Father is right - you've been living with this brute for too long. You're a Wayne and an Al Ghul, it's time you started acting like one." Damian said.
"Let me tell you something: I stopped being an Al Ghul when I left that hell you called home, and I never accepted to be a Wayne. Last time I checked, my last name is Todd and I want nothing to do with you...and of you." She glared at all of them. "Let's go, Bro. I'm done with this." Huntress began to walk away with Jason at her side.
Jason was her brother.
Jason was her family.
Bellatrix was a Todd and there was nothing anyone could do it change that.

Everyone needs a little Hero | A “Little” Perspective
The day was a stormy one. Without windows, the Borrower colony wouldn’t have been able to tell except for the faint thunder muffled by the walls and the flickering of lights in their own homes. Thankfully, Borrowers were often overprepared for emergencies, so other forms of light kept their homes bright and warm.
Hero knew there wasn’t much he could do for the humans when it came to the flickering lights, but that didn’t stop him from wanting to check on his friends and the other people in the building. His siblings were all working on various tasks, particularly preparing for winter even though it was months away.
His oldest siblings, Atlas and Cali, were currently working with some thick yarn to make new comforters for themselves and any new family who may be moving into the apartment. His father, Casper, was taking stock of their supplies and planning what to use before it spoiled while his mother, Prim, went out borrowing with Tiron, Hero’s next oldest brother. Winnie, the youngest, simply sat on the arm crocheted comforter Atlas and Cali were working on.
Hero helped his father for a few hours before being dismissed to clean his room. Thankfully, the young Borrower had already gone through and tidied up the night before. He even double checked his lines and hooks, wanting to avoid another accident like what happened when he was with Sam. Admittedly, things could have been a lot worse and, if Hero was being honest with himself, the experience was a scary one, but not something he would turn down. Sam had been so gentle and careful – not only with him but with keeping his secret.
Still, Hero wanted to at least pretend he was following the Borrower rules and try to keep to the shadows during his hero work. Heroes didn’t need praise for their work after all. After slipping on his borrowing pack and checked his equipment, Hero set out. He had almost made it to the door when he heard his father call out for him.
“Hero? Where are you off to?” Hero felt his heart leap into his throat. His family hadn’t questioned his comings and goings before, and he didn’t want to lie to his father of all things. He turned around, now seeing his siblings were also paying attention to the young Borrower’s answer and thought up a genuine answer as fast as his mind could concoct.
“I was going to get some more batteries for my side light and some of the other lights in the house. Mine are running low and mom said something about grabbing some while she was out with Tiron,” replied Hero. While this answer seemed to appease the family, there was an added second where they watched his reaction. Were they suspicious of him? Had they noticed something odd? Couldn’t be! At least, Hero thought he was being careful around his family.
“Well, be careful; and try to avoid the fifth floor. There’s a human woman who has some… interesting habits. Your mother and I went to check it out. I don’t think it’s anything dangerous, but it’s suspicious,” said Casper. Hero nodded and smiled thoughtfully.
“Yes sir,” he chirped before spinning on his heel and heading out into the walls.
The fifth floor? A strange woman? Why? What makes her strange? There are some pretty weird humans out there; but, then again, couldn’t the same be said about us? We do live in the walls after all. Hero shook his head as he focused on the task at hand. Don’t think about that now. If dad and mom are concerned about it, then I definitely should be – at least for now. Let’s see what’s higher up on the floors. I remember seeing batteries on one of the human’s desks. I wonder if they’re still there.
Rather than turning left or right, Hero ventured straight to the lines that ran up and down the majority of the walls that towered above him. He was just about there when he heard another muffled clap of thunder. Human footsteps were loud more often than not, but thunder sounded like an immense giant slamming into the ground. The thought of a sentient creature larger than a human stomping about and making such a ruckus made him shiver, but he couldn’t think about that now. Now, the young hero had to climb the line and needed to focus.
Hand over hand, foot hold after foot hold, he scaled up one floor, then the next after a break and then one after that. Winded, he paused at the top and waited for his heart to stop pounding so hard before walking back through the halls and floor joists. There were only a few families who lived on this floor, and they often kept to themselves, so Hero didn’t see anyone while he walked along.
The light at his side flickered and dimmed. The bright-eyed Borrower had made the excuse of needing batteries to go out, but he didn’t realize that his side lamp was so close to dimming. He quickened his pace to the apartment entrance, a floorboard knot that acted as a trap door, and ascended the ladder. The sounds of thunder and the natural sounds of the apartment seemed to be the only things Hero could hear. He held his breath and opened the trap knot and listened again. Again, only the natural sounds of the apartment.
Most likely, the human wasn’t home, which was a good sign. Hero lifted himself up, noticing he was under some sort of bookcase and that the desk had moved from the corner of the room to a space by the window and the couch. All of the lights were off and the only additional source of luminance were the candles on the desk and tables.
Is the power out? No, couldn’t be. The refrigerator is still humming. Just for fun? Hard to imagine a human sitting in the dark just for fun. Hero crept out of the shadows, turning his side lamp off, and hurried along the edge of the wall, then dashed to the coffee table and the couch before pausing to prepare his hook.
As he checked his hook and line, he noticed something by the edge of the desk. It was a bag, like a backpack. It wasn’t that he hadn’t seen a backpack before. In fact, Hero preferred them over side satchels any day because they were easier to run with. What caught the Borrower’s eye about the backpack were the patches and buttons on it. They weren’t just any buttons. These looked like massive clothing buttons just about as tall as Hero, and something was odd about the patches.
Hero checked his surroundings, keeping his senses open, and walked up to the backpack. He was right. There was something odd about the patches – they were fake. The backpack itself didn’t appear to have any holes in it and the buttons themselves looked handmade. It almost looked like his own backpack, except the patches on Hero’s bag were because he actually needed them. With an odd look to the bag, he headed off to the desk.
Why would a human have this? wondered Hero as he made his way around to one of the desk legs and began swinging his hook. Once. Twice. Thrice. Zing! The hook flew from his hand, carrying the line with it. It clattered against the edge of the table and slid off. Hero had to run to catch the hook so it didn’t clatter as it hit the ground. Try again. He encouraged himself silently. He began swinging his hook again. Once. Twice. Thrice. Zing! This time, the hook barely caught the edge of the wooden table. Hero tried his weight on it a few times before ascending the line.
Every time he glanced down to make sure he had the right footing, his keen, bright green eyes caught sight of the backpack and he wasn’t sure why. It was almost unsettling how similar it looked to a borrowing bag. Hero’s fingers finally found the edge of the table and, arms and legs shaking slightly, he rolled up on top of the desk and crouched, finding the nearest thing he could hide behind which was a cup of pencils and brushes.
The little Borrower had just made it to his hiding place when a streak of lightening burst through the sky so bright it cast his shadow. The blinding light was followed by an explosion of sound so loud Hero had to cover his ears. Perhaps I should’ve waited to come out. I hope Sam and Maggie are okay. Do they get scared of storms too?
Hero knew he needed to go check on them, but the batteries came first. He checked one more time before stepping out onto the open in search of the batteries. This was the first time Hero had a clear view of the desk. There was a closed computer (Sam explained how they worked) off to the side as well as a couple of other strange rectangular boxes with buttons on them. Hero recognized the triangle play button, but wasn’t sure what the red dot meant. There was the cup of pencils and brushes he was hiding behind, but beyond that was some sort of small drawers with erasers, paints, and other supplies.
In the center of the desk was a book with drawings on it, but Hero was more interested in the small drawers – particularly in the top drawer which looked like it had what he was looking for. Now, he just needed to get into it.
First things first, he decided to climb up onto the drawers. He couldn’t pry it open and get into it if he couldn’t reach. With a quick roll of his shoulders, Hero grasped the plastic edges and, like a ladder, climbed up the side until he reached the top. The sandy brown-haired boy had just leaned over the edge and began pulling at the drawer when the drawing in the sketchbook caught his eye. The black and white pencil sketch took him by such surprise that he had to stand and tilt his head around to make sure he wasn’t seeing things.
The sketch was of a person, which wasn’t the alarming part. The alarming part was the improvised pin sword at their side and the patchwork clothing they wore. The alarming part was the stitched bag and the fact the figure looked like there was a hook and string in their hands.
The sketch was that of a Borrower.
Hero felt a surge of energy course through his body, ears ringing and feeling slightly light-headed. This person had drawn a Borrower, and accurately if Hero was honest. The Borrower boy abandoned his quest to retrieve the batteries from the top drawer and climbed back down hurriedly to get a better view of the sketch.
The drawing was shaded, though the eyes still looked a little cartoonish, but the other fine details matched piece for piece. There were a few elements that seemed a little odd to him though, such as the furry ears and mouse-like tails, but who was Hero to question what a human thought they saw. Hero tried to recall if the Borrower looked like anyone he knew and, thankfully, the answer was no. Still, what would inspire a human to draw something like this? Did this person know about Borrowers? Had they been talking to someone? Were there other drawings?
Curiosity overtook the Borrower’s mind as he walked to the edge of the page and lifted, being careful to not bend or tare the paper. Sure enough, there were other sketches. There was a variation of elements such as clothing style, age, and gender. All of them had furry ears and tails, sometimes furry feet too. The scenes were different too. In some of the pictures, the Borrowers were with a human, being held or carried or simply just talking.
Hero had nearly lost himself in the artwork when he heard a door open and close. The Borrower nearly jumped out of his skin as he scrambled out from between the sketchbook pages and made a mad dash for the pencil cup. Just because they’re drawing Borrowers doesn’t mean they won’t try to keep me. Maybe that’s how they learned how to draw us. Oh no. What if they try and keep me?
Hero hoped that he wasn’t noticed but had scrambled out of sight in such a hurry that he didn’t push the sketchbook pages back to the original picture. He covered his nose and mouth to stifle his heavy breathing when he heard something thud against the ground and a curious hum. The footsteps approached, faltering before arriving fully at the desk.
“What the…” The sounds of that soft exclamation from what sounded like a boy made Hero’s heart skip a beat. There were a few more footsteps which ominously paired with another bolt of lightening and a crack of thunder. Hero didn’t need to see the human to know he was to Hero’s left.
It suddenly hit him. Hero had left his hook and line at the edge of the table, and a quick glance to his left confirmed that the boy had found his line as he saw a hand letting the thread run across his palm. There were sounds of shuffling and pages turning.
Then, out of nowhere, the boy started talking in a low, soft voice. “Hello. Um… I don’t know if you’re here or not, but I hope you know I’m not going to hurt you. That’s probably not much consolation, but… well… I don’t know… saying out loud sometimes helps.” Hero leaned against the pencil jar, working up the courage to try and say something – anything.
“I’m Watney,” said the boy as the sound of footsteps retreated from the desk. “Do you have a name? Ug… silly me. Of course you probably have a name. Idiot.” The last part of the sentence seemed to be directed at himself.
Hero wondered what he was supposed to say. What could he say? Should he say anything? He didn’t have time as Watney continued talking.
“Um… do you like the drawings? I’m… assuming you did. Or did they bother you. I’m sorry if that’s the case,” said Watney. Hero finally managed to get his breathing under control and his thoughts in order.
If this Watney guy knows about Borrowers, then he should have an idea about the rules and be willing to answer some questions about how he knows about us. If that’s the case, he won’t want to keep me. I have to find out how he knows about us. If he’s telling other people, then we’re in trouble – danger even. I need to make sure he’s not telling anyone. It’ll be okay. He didn’t take my line and I have my things. I can do this.
Watney sighed and sounded like he was heading for the kitchen when Hero peered around the jar and stepped out. The subtle motion instantly caught the boy’s eyes. To Hero, the boy looked to be around his oldest brother’s age if not a little older. He had auburn hair and pale blue eyes that, in an instant, seemed to absorb Hero’s entire frame.
“Woah…” The exhalation of Watney took on the single word, sending an instinctual shiver down Hero’s spine. Still, Hero forced himself to smile, remembering that he may not be helping a human – but he was helping his whole race of people.
“Hello,” greeted Hero, admittedly sounding more bashful than he wanted. He cleared his throat and straightened up before continuing. “It’s nice to meet you Watney. My name is Hero.” Rather than approach, Watney crouched at an impressively slow pace and sat on the ground so he could still partially see Hero while also maintaining, what Hero thought to be, a safe distance.
“Wow,” the auburn-haired boy was obviously trying to form words while his brain was visibly malfunctioning. “I mean… gosh. Sorry. That was rude of me. Yeah… um… nice to meet you too. You said your name is Hero? That’s an awesome name.” Watching the flustered boy was admittedly amusing; and Hero couldn’t help but chuckle to himself, but also be slightly confused. Watney clearly was drawing Borrowers, granted with some altered features such as the ears and tails; but, if he knew about them, why was he acting so flustered?
“Thanks,” said Hero, daring to take a few more steps closer to the partially opened book. “Um… Watney? Have you… ever seen someone like me?” Hero was careful not to mention Borrowers by name. For all the young hero knew, this was something that Watney thought he came up with himself.
“What? Like you? No, but I’m not surprised. You’re not supposed to be seen or known about, right?” The question hit Hero like a gut punch, and his confusion must’ve been apparent because Watney continued. “Sorry. You’re probably breaking all of the rules just to talk to me. Gosh! Sorry! I’m such an idiot. You’ve got to be freaking out.”
Hero felt his confusion growing more and more. Watney hadn’t met a Borrower before, but he knew about the rules? He had some idea of how Hero was feeling?
“How do you know about the rules? Do you… know what I am?” asked the young Borrower, daring to take a few more steps out onto the desk to get a better view of Watney.
Watney, who had partially averted his gaze, glanced back up at Hero before responding. “Well… I mean, yeah. You’re a Little, right?” Hero felt a wave of confusion pour itself into his already charged and muddled brain.
“A little what?” asked Hero.
“No. I mean… yeah, you’re little, but you’re also a Little. You know? Part of the book series?” prompted Watney. Hero felt his head swirl.
“Wait… there are books?” asked Hero.
“Yeah. They’re by some guy named John Peterson. He wrote them ages ago, but they’re about little people who live in the walls with mouse-like tails and improvised clothes. They go on adventures and aren’t supposed to be seen or talk to humans. You’ve never heard of this?” The more Watney explained, the more worried Hero got; but, at the same time, he felt an excitement flutter in him.
If humans know about these books, then they’ll know what we’re worried about. They’ll know that we’re smart just like them and maybe, just maybe, they won’t try to capture us. This might actually be a good thing, right?
Hero remembered Watney had asked a question and hurriedly shook his head.
“No, I’ve never heard of them. But, if it makes you feel better, you’re right about the other things. Humans aren’t supposed to know about us and, if possible, we’re not supposed to talk to you if we are seen. I… hope you can promise you won’t say anything to anyone about this; right?” Hero tried to sound friendly and inviting, knowing that his whole world still depended on a handful of humans keeping their interactions and his species a secret.
“Yeah, no. Absolutely. Lips sealed. You have my word,” said Watney, a smile on his slightly freckled face. There were a few moments of silence before Watney awkwardly cleared his throat and continued. “Um… so… I know it would be rude if I asked what you are and everything, but could I ask you something different? Well, more like an observation?”
Seeing that Watney seemed to understand more than most humans, he couldn’t really see the harm in answering a few observations. He nodded, his sandy brown hair bobbing up and down, falling slightly into his eyes.
“Neat! Um… well, it’s a little awkward, but you don’t actually have a… tail or fluffy ears, do you?” asked Watney. Hero felt a genuine smile tug onto his face as he shook his head.
“No, I don’t have a tail or fluffy ears,” replied Hero. “I noticed that with all of your drawings. They’re really good by the way. You’re really talented.” Watney seemed to straighten up at this complement.
“Thanks, but I’m nowhere near as good as other artists,” he said dismissively.
“Hey, don’t doubt yourself,” encouraged Hero. “Considering you’re going off of what these books you talked about describe, you’ve got a lot of good details.” Watney smiled again and shrugged.
“Well, thanks,” said the auburn-haired human. “Hey, do you mind if I ask you about, like, suggestions? You know. Are the packs and tools okay?” Hero nodded.
“Everything that I would usually bring with me. Though it is a little dark, so I bring this little side lamp,” confirmed the Borrower. At this, he remembered why he originally came out and ventured into this apartment. “Actually, Watney, would you mind if I borrowed some batteries? My light is running low, and I don’t think it’ll last the journey home.”
“Oh, yeah! Of course! Um… is it okay if I get closer?” asked Watney who was already in the process of standing up, hesitating for Hero’s go-ahead.
“Sure, absolutely. You’re the one helping me,” said Hero. “Thank you.” Watney stepped forward, keeping his movements slow and obvious like he were moving in slow-motion and opened the drawer.
“What kind do you need?” asked the auburn artist.
“Um… the round kind?” In all honesty, Hero didn’t know there were so many different kinds of batteries. He knew what they looked like and which ones worked, but not what kind they were. Watney fished out a literal handful of different batteries and laid them on the desk a few inches from where Hero stood. The Borrower’s eyes widened, knowing this many batteries undoubtedly would power their home for several months. Still, he couldn’t bring all of them home. He found a couple disks for his side lamp and one of the bigger kind, called AA, and slipped them into his bag.
“Thank you so much. This really helps,” said Hero.
“Anytime Hero,” said Watney. “Hey, um… if it’s not weird or anything, do you think I could draw some sketches of you?” Hero had to think about it for a moment before making up his mind.
“Um… as long as you don’t make them look too much like me it should be okay. Remember, w… er… I’m supposed to be a secret. If you do, just… make sure you close your book when you’re done?” The request seemed to be a reasonable one and it thrilled Watney.
“Awesome! Well, you’re welcome back anytime little man. Oof… sorry. Was that weird?” asked Watney. Hero smiled and chuckled.
“No, it wasn’t weird… big guy… Hm… maybe it is weird.” The joke, seemingly well received, left the two boys laughing for a few seconds, before Hero elected to make his exit. Watney seemed like he wanted to offer Hero a literal hand but was showing tremendous self-restraint as he watched Hero descend the line.
Watney waved good-bye, knowing Hero wouldn’t want to show where the hidden entrance to the walls was, and stepped into his room. Hero waited until he heard the door click before heading back to the bookshelf.
This new information about “Littles” opened up a whole new world of possibilities for the young Borrower. If humans already knew about little people living in the walls and weren’t already setting traps, maybe Hero was right all along and humans weren’t always capturing, rampaging, and trapping Borrowers. Maybe, just maybe, they were also being let go and befriending the giants they lived with.

The Engineer’s Adventures

“If I were piloting, Number One, I would have flown us through the eye of that storm cell. We would have gotten here quicker,” Chris jokes to Number One as they unstrap themselves from the co-pilot and pilot’s seats, respectively.
“And that is precisely why I was flying and not you, Captain. We may have been slower, but I got us here in one piece.”
“Lieutenant, back me up here. My flying was great in that speeder on Eloma.”
“You kept us ahead of our pursuers, yes sir,” you say with a smile.
“And staying ahead of pursuers is not a valuable skill in an atmosphere like this one where we are not being pursued,” Number One states with some finality, as she presses the control to open the back of the shuttle and extend the ramp.
You are on Caylara, for what you hope will be a boring mission. The captain and Number One, along with security officer Ensign James, are here to open negotiations for Caylara to join the Federation.
You are here because of the atmosphere – it is notoriously difficult to traverse. You can’t transport living things through it, unless you want them to be merged, dead, or both, and even flying through it is a challenge because of the electrical storm layers. There are windows of time when it’s safer, when shuttles and communications can get through, and windows when they can’t.
At Louvier’s instruction you had prepared a shuttle (and a backup – you don’t like to take chances) to travel through the atmosphere. Standard procedure for Caylara was to have an engineer accompany the shuttle to perform any repairs needed on the ground. You had tried to argue your preparations were good enough that you wouldn’t be needed, but Chris had seen straight through you.
“You find diplomacy boring and you don’t want a repeat of Eloma. That’s what’s really going on here, isn’t it?” His mouth had twisted into that smile you found irresistible, and even though you pouted, adopting your best puppy-dog expression, he had just laughed. “It’s all right. I won’t make you go to the reception. I won’t even make you wear your dress uniform. You can stay with the shuttle.”
You hang back as the captain and Ensign James pass you, Chris brushing his hand against yours as he passes. You smile a little, and get your tricorder out – you need to check to make sure the shuttle didn’t get damaged and will be all right to make the return trip. You look down the ramp as you scan, seeing the Caylarans for the first time as their delegation greets the away team.
They are very tall. You estimate the shortest is well over two metres and they tower above the away team, even over Ensign James who is tall for a human. But given the slightly lower gravity of Caylara their height isn’t surprising, you think. They have skin varying from very pale through to olive toned. Their faces are smooth but they have scales around their hairline extending down to the rest of their bodies. Well, their hands, at least. They are wearing long robes.
Your tricorder beeps as the away team starts to move away; there seems to be a charge buildup in one of the EPS controllers, but that’s all and it’s an easy fix. You pop the relevant panel and discharge it, without shocking yourself for once, and replace the panel.
Then there’s nothing left to do but wait. The reception is due to last two, perhaps three hours – short enough that you’ll be able to make your return trip through the atmosphere with time to spare before the current window closes.
You’ve brought some reading, of course, but first you want to get to the bottom of why the EPS controller picked up a charge. You take it as a personal insult, really – you were sure you had accounted for everything from the data you were given to prepare. However, when you compare the preliminary data with the scans the shuttle took as it went through the atmosphere you can clearly see the discrepancies. You’re puzzled for a moment – but of course you had enhanced the sensors to the latest specs when you adapted the shuttle, and you don’t know how old the original readings you were working with were. You almost wish Chris had piloted you through the storm cell; then you would have more data to work with.
You busy yourself combining the shuttle’s readings with your existing model, and calculating how much it was off by. After some time you are pretty sure you’ve got to the bottom of where the charge came from, and you modify the shuttle so that it doesn’t happen again.
You also think you may be able to make predictions with your new model, and perhaps refine your timings for the atmospheric windows. The Caylarans know the timings pretty accurately, but you aren’t at the stage of sharing data on that level as yet.
You run a new set of scans, and frown – there’s only ninety minutes until the window closes. You compare with the original estimates and—
Hang on. When did it get so late? You were supposed to be on the way back by now.
“Shuttle Hubble to away team? Come in please?”
Silence.
“Shuttle Hubble to Captain Pike?”
More silence.
Silence when you try to call Number One and James, too.
“Enterprise to Hubble. Come in, please.”
“Shuttle Hubble here, Lieutenant Spock. I was just about to call you – I have lost contact with the rest of the away team. They should have been back here by now, but they aren’t.”
“I have also tried to contact the captain but to no avail. Three unknown craft have appeared in the system, and have locked weapons on to us and the planet. They are not responding to hails. I have placed the Enterprise on yellow alert and raised shields. We cannot get a sensor lock on individual life signs through the atmosphere, and—”
“They’re firing some sort of energy weapon!”
“Taking evasive action!”
“Lieutenant, I—” Spock sounds uncharacteristically strained as he’s interrupted by what sounds like an overloading console.
“I understand. I’ll look for them. I’ll keep you updated.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant. Enterprise out.”
That’s it, you think.
You’re on your own.
You take a deep breath: what do you need? Communicator. Tricorder. Emergency medkit.
Phaser.
You put the medkit in a backpack, and since there’s space you add a water bottle and some emergency rations. You clip the tricorder to a utility belt, and holster the phaser, set to stun. Your communicator goes in your pants pocket; you’ve got your usual tools in your jacket.
Then you remember your terrible luck with communicators, so you grab a spare and shove it in your backpack. That should do it. You can’t carry the kitchen sink and you don’t have time to keep second guessing yourself.
Okay. Plan: find the away team, bring them to safety.
You exit the shuttle and shut the ramp – you don’t need strangers damaging it.
You take in your surroundings next. The shuttle has landed in the grounds of a large building, elevated on a hill in the middle of a city. It’s only three or four storeys high, but quite wide, and you think it extends back a long way. There are decorative metal accents spaced at regular intervals – lightning conductors, you realise, as you head toward the most important looking doorway – you see burnt grass at their bases. This building isn’t tall, but it is the tallest around; the atmosphere must affect Caylaran architecture, you think.
There’s no one around, which surprises you; shouldn’t there be guards?
You push the door and it opens with a whisper. Inside is the most ornate room you have ever been in. The walls are gold coloured stone, there are dozens of columns in mottled golden marble, and there are decorations finished with real gold leaf everywhere. There are bronze statues and hundreds of warm coloured lights. The ceiling is as decorated as the walls, and the whole effect is beautiful. Imposing. Stunning. Overwhelming.
But again, no one is here. You get your tricorder out, but you can’t resolve anything. Perhaps something is blocking the scan? You look at the stairs. The steps are high, designed with Caylarans in mind, and go up before dividing. There are flights down, too. There are corridors to the left and right, and you have to take a moment to weigh all your options. The largest doors are ahead, though, up the main staircase and over. Perhaps that’s where you would take guests that you wanted to impress?
You think back to what you read on Caylara in your mission briefing as you climb the stairs. Their head of state is Crown Princess Nanren, but although the title remains the same, a princess many generations ago passed laws to end the hereditary monarchy. Now a new crown prince or princess is elected for life when the previous one dies, and you think they have an elected senate too.
Beyond that, you don’t really know anything, you think as you reach the top of the stairs. You cross the landing, trying to stay aware of your surroundings. And as you look down the stairs, you lock eyes with the first person you’ve seen.
A guard is sitting on the ground next to the doors. He’s armed, and the stairs in front of him show signs of having been fired on. But he’s slumped back, his green-blue swirled eyes staring up at you.
“Why’s it so dark? I can see you in the dark. Why did you bring the dark with you? You shouldn’t—” he tries to lift his weapon, and you draw your phaser, but his head lolls and he closes his eyes, dropping the weapon in front of him.
That was unsettling.
You proceed slowly down the stairs, but he doesn’t move again. You kick his weapon away and get your tricorder out. You’re not a medic, this isn’t a medical tricorder, and you don’t know much about Caylaran physiology, but you do have field medic training and you can see that something is terribly wrong. You scan him, and then the air. It seems like there are traces of a molecule around that your tricorder program flags up as having features in common with known hallucinogens. It didn’t flag up on your general scan so it’s probably dissipated enough that it won’t affect you, but still you wish you’d put on an EV suit. There’s no time to second guess yourself now, though.
You put the tricorder away in favour of the phaser, and you gently push the next door open.
If you thought the foyer was large, this room is even larger. It’s all gold again, and should be as beautiful, but it looks like there’s been a fight in here and furniture is in haphazard piles on the floor. It makes you think of playing forts with your cousins in your grandparents’ house as a child. You’re not a strategist but you can easily see that these piles aren’t much better than that – they provide barely any cover.
You pick your way over gilded chairs and past carved wooden tables inlaid with gold, keeping an eye out. About a quarter of the way into the room, under a table with two chairs on top you see a Caylaran. She looks young, wearing what looks like it could be a staff uniform – it’s a plain warm toned brown dress with an embroidered hem, far less fancy than the delegates who had welcomed the others of your team. She’s staring straight ahead, hugging her knees to her chest, rocking back and forth. She pays you no attention as you kneel down by her.
“What’s your name?” You ask, softly.
“My name is Lararen and I’m going to kill the queen, going to kill the queen, going to kill the queen. My name is Lararen and I’m going to kill the queen, then the Genai are going to kill me.”
She smiles broadly as she finishes her little song, still staring vacantly straight ahead, and you shudder. You shake her shoulder and she blinks, slowly, but she doesn’t move.
You straighten up, thoughtfully, wondering what the Genai are. Some sort of bogeyman, or an alien race? Not that it matters.
Next you find a pair of guards, asleep, holding hands. You move their weapons out of sight and continue through.
But then you find a dead Caylaran. He looks like someone important, but his red robe embroidered with a golden floral patten has a scorch mark right in the middle of his chest. You’re not sure if that killed him, because there’s a pool of blood beneath him too. Either way, you think as you close his grey-purple eyes, he probably didn’t deserve whatever it was. You take a moment to pay your respects before moving on.
You don’t find any more dead bodies in this room, but you find several more Caylarans, either sleeping or talking nonsense. One male asks you where your flowers are, and tries to give you some from a fallen flower arrangement, but most of the rest are just scared.
You think they probably have good cause, as you push another door open. You pick it because the largest number of guards were close to it, so you figure it probably leads somewhere important.
It leads on to a stair well, small but lavishly decorated with tapestries, depicting Caylarans standing in outdoor scenes, sometimes with animals you don’t recognise. They deaden the sound of your footsteps as you climb the tall stone stairs.
Then two things happen: you pause as you notice one of the hangings is moving a little at the bottom, as though in a breeze. And then you hear voices above you.
“She’s not up here,” says a female voice, annoyed. Lucid.
“Well she’s definitely not down there.” The second voice is male. Defensive. “I’ve got a message from Alara. She wants us to look again.”
“Fine. But I want it noted for the record that this is a waste of time,” the first voice says, sounding suddenly quieter – she’s probably passed through a doorway.
“Like anyone cares, Nerela,” the second voice says. You risk a peek up the stairwell. You don’t get a good look as the second person disappears through the door, but they are definitely not Caylaran – he has blue skin.
You lean against a tapestry. There are aliens here, separate from your away team. There are aliens in orbit, too. The odds are good that they’re the same species. And “she” must be the crown princess. But what are they planning?
Regardless, you still need to find your people. It’s been half an hour; you could get back to the shuttle faster if you went straight there, but there isn’t much time left in this window.
You eye the tapestry again. You’re definitely not going to follow the aliens, and this breeze must be coming from somewhere. You push it aside.
This door is the first plain thing you’ve seen in the building. It stands slightly ajar – hence the breeze – and it’s painted beige to match the stonework, but otherwise it’s featureless. It swings as quietly as all the other doors when you push it, but it has some kind of bolt on the other side. Interesting. You try to work it, but you can’t. You think of the tools in your jacket; you could probably figure it out, but no. There’s no time. You push the door to, making sure it’s as shut as it can be, and continue.
You must have entered the service part of the building, you think, as you walk along a corridor. This is functional and plain, like the door. You feel a little more comfortable here; if you’d been interested in fancy, you would have joined the command track. Or Diplomatic Corps. You get your tricorder out again, but it doesn’t show you anything still and you didn’t expect it to. But then you approach a door, and hear whimpering from the other side.
You have your hand on your phaser as you push the door open. It’s dark compared to the rest of the building; there is a small window but there’s not much light coming through the Caylaran atmosphere right now. You take a moment to let your eyes adjust, then head toward the whimpering.
The room is small; some kind of office, perhaps? There’s a desk in the room, and behind it—
“Number One?” She’s crying. Number One is sitting on the floor crying, hair a mess, dress uniform dirty, cradling Ensign James in her lap.
You can barely believe it, but you squat down, reaching for your tricorder. You can see James breathing, at least. You look around, but Chris isn’t anywhere to be seen.
“Number One?” You scan them both. They both have traces of the drug in their systems, but a lot less than the guard you scanned earlier. As your eyes adjust you can see though that James has hit his head; there’s blood in his hair and on Una’s uniform. He’s also been hit by a energy discharge, but to the side.
“Una? What’s wrong?”
“I failed everyone. I didn’t protect my captain. What first officer doesn’t protect her captain? They’re going to throw me in the brig. They’re going to court martial me. I lost my captain, and he’s dead, I—”
Suddenly you’ve had enough. You slap her, hard. “Number One!”
“Lieutenant! What did you just—”
“Oh my goodness! I’m sorry, I—you—” You breathe. “Are you all right?” You strip your backpack off for your medkit. You’re going to need to try to bring Ensign James round.
“I—I’m not sure. I don’t know what happened; everything was normal and then suddenly it wasn’t. I was so scared, Lieutenant. It was—I can still feel it. But it doesn’t feel like me.” She shakes her head, eyes still a little wide, and you pass her the water bottle. She takes a drink as you inject Ensign James with a hypospray. He starts stirring immediately, which is good, but you still think he needs a proper exam to rule out any brain problems.
“Una, you’ve got fifteen minutes to get back to the shuttle with Ensign James. There are alien ships attacking the Enterprise, and I’ve seen aliens here too. I think they may be called the Genai. You go down the corridor, down the stairs, through the big room, through the foyer, and out. Do you think you can do that?”
“Back to the shuttle. Genai.” She shakes her head again, blinking a few times. She squares her shoulders. “Yes, I think so. I can. What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to find the captain. You can tell the computer to run on autopilot, if you need to – I updated the climate model, so the computer should be able to handle it.”
Together you help Ensign James to his feet.
“Do you have your communicator still?”
“I don’t,” James is still groggy as he pats himself down.
“I do,” Number One brings her communicator out and opens it. “Number One to Enterprise, come in please.”
Static.
“I think there’s a blocking field throughout this building. The tricorder isn’t working for some things either. You’d better get going.”
“Good luck, Lieutenant.”
“Thanks. You too, Commander.”
You put your medkit away as Number One and James leave. You’re relieved that they’re both okay, and you’re confident in Una, now she recognises her fear isn’t hers.
Back in the corridor you check the door to make sure Una shut it. You push it, but it’s locked. Weird. You could probably unlock it, but you don’t want to go that way anyway.
You turn your back on the door and continue along the corridor. Number One had said the captain – had said Chris – was dead. But he can’t be. She wasn’t, and you think she only had blood from Ensign James on her uniform. But... what if he is?
If he is, you do your duty as a Starfleet officer first. Find his body. Survive. Get out of here. Then mourn him second.
You pass three locked doors on the corridor, but the last opens to more stairs. Still functional, but just going down this time. You go down, listening, hand on you phaser.
Back on the ground floor – you think, but it could be a mezzanine level – there are several rooms that are open.
You go into the first one, hand still on your phaser. It’s a bedroom, and there’s a Caylaran male cowering in the corner, wearing the service uniform.
“Have you come to end it?” He asks, staring past you. You don’t answer, but your heart aches; you think he means his life. The next room is empty, bed neatly made up.
You listen at the door to the third room, and you think you hear breathing. You push the door open slowly. You don’t see anyone at first, but as you head into the room you see the edge of a gold robe, protruding out of what must the en-suite. You think you’re getting a feel for Caylaran fashion, and this is easily the fanciest thing you’ve seen so far. The robe is made of gold fabric, whereas all the others you’ve seen have been colours embroidered with gold. This one has gold and silver embroidery, and multicoloured gemstones picking out the centres of the flowers.
“Crown Princess Nanren?” Your pitch your voice low. Gentle. You remember how Chris spoke to you on Earth in the past, when you were panicking, and try to convey that calm, that confidence, to her. And in that moment you know you can no longer focus on looking for him. If this is the crown princess, more hinges on you looking after her.
“Crown Princess? I’m a Lieutenant from the Enterprise. From Starfleet – the Federation. I’m not a dream or a nightmare. I’m here to help. Will you come out?”
“The Genai are here. They’re going to kill me. I—I can’t—”
“We will find somewhere you can call your people. I will look after you. We will call in your people and they will deal with the Genai.” General Order One doesn’t apply here, you think. Not if the Genai are already interfering. Not that you care about diplomacy anyway. You’ll do what’s right now, and face the consequences later.
“I don’t—Why aren’t they here already?”
“I don’t know, Crown Princess. But we will figure it out. Please trust me.” You put all your belief into your tone, all the hope you still have left... and she steps forward.
She looks every bit the princess. She is tall, even compared to the other Caylara you’ve seen, and her dress is as exquisite as you expected from the tiny part you’d seen. You wonder, briefly, how many she has like that and how many months, perhaps years, it took to sew. She has a gauzy golden cloak hanging behind her, also embroidered, and her dark hair is braided and pinned up into an elaborate style. The only things that are not Princess-like about her are her purple-blue swirled eyes. They are wide, and anxious.
You recall your briefing notes, and bow. “Princess,” you say, staring at the floor.
“Arise,” she replies, and there’s the ghost of a command tone there. Good.
You straighten, looking up at her again, and pause. This is not how you dress if you might need to make a run for it.
You exhale, surveying the room. It’s a bedroom – a staff bedroom.
“Princess, I can get you out of this, I think. But first... you need to change.”
You find staff robes in the wardrobe that fit her, even if they’re a touch short. And sensible shoes. You have to sit her on the bed to take her hair down, but, you reflect with a little smile that she can’t see, taking her pins out is not unlike taking tiny components out of a circuit board.
“You get used to it, you know,” she says as she stands after you’ve finished. “The pomp and ceremony. The robes. People expect it of their princess, and you get used to it.”
“They are lovely,” you say, following her gaze to where her robes are hung up. “But we should get moving. Where can we call your people?”
“That sort of thing is in the wing on the other side of the Room of State,” she says. Right. The other side of that big room. Of course. And there’s a locked door between you and it.
Even so you retrace your steps. She’s much faster up the stairs than you, and you think bad thoughts about differing alien physiologies. But then, she would find the chairs on the Enterprise a bit small, you think. And the beds.
Soon you’re on the corridor with the door at the end, and you finger your jacket’s zipper as you get closer – it’s time for you to brush off your lock-picking skills. You hope the lock is easy like the ones on Eloma.
But the princess pushes the door and it opens with a whisper.
You can’t say anything. But you thank your lucky stars for small favours.
“Let me,” you say, as you approach the bottom of the stairwell. “If anything happens, go back the way we came.” You look the princess in the eye and she nods.
You crack the door open the tiniest bit, and you hear a voice.
You turn back to the princess, reach out and take her hand. You know it isn’t protocol but you squeeze gently, feeling the scales on her skin and a ring round her finger, hoping the touch will keep her calm.
You push the door open again.
“—everywhere. Yes. Me personally. I don’t care what you—yes I know scanners aren’t working. I wish you hadn’t got voice comms back. But she’s not here; she must be on your floor. Fine, Nerela. She could be in the south wing. No don’t come down here, you idiot. Go round. Ugh. Put Yaima on. Yes tell Nerela she’s being a pain. No, they’re still with our vessel, so she can’t be in the garden. It’s the storm cycle; of course we can’t—To the East, yes. I’ll see you there. But tell Nerela she’s done after this. No I don’t care. Alara out.”
You hear footsteps stalking down the room, getting closer. Your heart is in your mouth, one hand on your phaser, as you hold your breath. The steps falter slightly... and then they continue. You stay frozen until you can’t hear them anymore, then you give it a minute after that before you move the door.
The Room of State has changed since you saw it last; almost all the furniture has been pushed to the sides of the room, apart from a chair cushion in the middle of the floor; that’s what made Alara miss her step.
You take a step forward, and the princess follows, still holding your hand. She gasps, and you follow her gaze; at the end of the room are rows of Caylarans, lying on the floor. You look around, but the coast seems clear. You take your tricorder out one-handed, and you scan them. From here you can pick out their life signs – they may be unconscious but they’re still alive.
“They’re okay. They aren’t dead. Probably stunned with an energy weapon.” You feel the princess relax, and you drop her hand. “We can take care of them later. You need to show me where to go.”
She nods, and you follow her across the room and through the door on the other side. You have time to check on the way across: Number One and James aren’t there. Neither is the captain.
The stairwell on the other side is like the first, except this has paintings rather than tapestries, and your footsteps are louder as you climb.
“I don’t know who any of them are,” the princess says, looking at the paintings on your way up. “I suppose I should, but... they’re not my ancestors, I suppose. Just... predecessors. In a way.”
You resist the impulse to shush her.
On this stairwell a painting opens to the service corridor. You take the lead going through, but the corridor is empty. And when the princess shuts the door, you hear its lock click.
You walk along the corridor, listening carefully, but you can’t hear any signs of life. You have to hustle to keep up with the princess, but you push a couple of doors as you pass them. They’re both locked.
The stairs down at the other end of the corridor carry on further than they do on the other side, and your calves are beginning to ache when you reach the bottom. Your discomfort doesn’t matter, you tell yourself. It’s cooler down here, and you think you must be underground. Some kind of bunker.
“My real office is in my suite. My ceremonial office is downstairs, but this”—she opens the second door you reach—“is for emergencies.”
The office is dark as you go in, but she presses a control and it lights up. You close the door behind you and look around. Unlike the other rooms off the service corridors, this one is lavish once again. The wallpaper has gilded highlights, and the desk is made of a golden brown hardwood and is intricately carved. There’s no window since you’re underground, but the light fittings are made of bronze and remind you of the statues in the foyer. You realise the room is probably this nice in case the princess needs to do an emergency broadcast – her surroundings will still look the part.
The princess sits at the desk, pressing her palm to a sensor. A computer apparatus lifts up, and she enters some commands. You walk round the desk and stand a little way to her side, as a Caylaran man appears on the screen. His expression is blank, confused.
“Is this some kind of joke? At such a time? Using Princess Nanren’s—wait—”
He frowns, tips his head to one side.
“Your highness, is—is that you? The Genai—we were sure they’d killed you. That’s what they said. And the blocking field is on so we couldn’t scan—we had no idea—I—” He closes his eyes and bows his head.
“I am so sorry, your highness. I didn’t want to risk your people on a dangerous mission with no intelligence if you were already dead. But I should have trusted in you, and not believed the Genai without proof.”
Staff robe or not, Crown Princess Nanren straightens up and looks every bit the princess once again.
“Arise. Guard Leader Daymen, I am glad to see you. Please do not apologise; the time for analysing our decisions and learning from this situation is not yet here. First I must survive, and you must take back the palace. The Genai are still here; they have a vessel in the garden and people throughout the palace. Our people have been drugged; most are in the Room of State, but there are likely others dispersed through the palace.”
“They have three vessels in orbit too, I think,” you say, quietly.
“They have vessels in orbit too, although”—she presses a control, and a little data window appears—“they won’t be able to send any reinforcements through the atmosphere for a few more hours. What do you need to retake the building?”
“I will bring my guards now, highness. If you could turn the blocking field off it would make things safer, but—no. You are the most important. Enact the safe-room protocol, and remain where you are until we secure the building.”
“I may be able to lower the blocking field. But I shall keep safe. Do you have any news of our Federation guests?”
“Their shuttle left before the window closed. I was unable to talk to their ship at that time, but...” his expression goes thoughtful. “We use a limited range of communication frequencies. The Genai in orbit could have blocked them.”
You nod to yourself; the Caylaran frequencies had been in your briefing, and they were very different to Federation ones. The blocking field in the Palace was wide-band, but it would take too much power for a block like that over a bigger area. Much more sensible to just block the Caylaran frequencies.
“Thank you. May the skies protect you, Guard Leader.”
“May the skies protect you, highness.” He bows once again and cuts the connection.
“Lieutenant, thank you for all you have done for me so far. May I ask this last favour?”
“To take down the field? Of course, your highness. What do I need to do?”
She slides a ring off her finger and hands it to you. It’s a very narrow band of gold with a small red stone set on it. It’s big for you, though, so you slip it on to your thumb.
“You can use that to gain access to the systems. The security office is down the corridor to the right.”
“Lock the door behind me, your highness.” You smile as you turn to go.
“May the skies protect you, Lieutenant.”
“And you too.” You go through the door, closing it behind you. You hear a loud thunk a moment after you do; it sounds like more than a lock – probably blast doors. At least she’s safe, you think. Even if that means you’re alone.
You wonder about Chris, and where he could be. You have to hold on to hope, don’t you? You can’t think... no. You mustn’t. Instead you think about what he would do in your place. You think he’d be cautious. You’re nearly at your goal, but if you don’t succeed people could get hurt if the Caylaran Guard can’t tell who is who, or where they are. You’ve heard people complain about security officers being trigger happy; you think it’s probably the same for the Guard.
And you’re in a strategically important part of the palace; you don’t know how many Genai there are but they’ll probably find this area eventually. You draw your phaser, and make sure you walk quietly.
There is only one door left between you and where the corridor splits, when you hear a voice. The door opens a little, and you freeze. The voice is familiar – one of the Genai.
“—last time, no. I genuinely, and I am completely sincere on this, do not care what Alara thinks. Not even a tiny little bit! She missed this entire section! Yeah whatever, Yaima, you go tell her what I said. But when I find the Queen—Crown Princess, whatever, and she doesn’t, she’s the one that’ll get fired, not me! Nerela out!”
The door slams open, and Nerela stomps out. It’s her or you, but you are ready and she is not. Her black eyes widen as she sees you, and her weapon is in hand, but before she can aim you shoot. She grunts as she falls back, stunned.
Happily, Genai are shorter than Caylarans, although Nerela is wearing high heeled boots which make her look taller. You drag her back into the room she came out of, take her weapon and communicator and leave her lying in the recovery position. You shut the door behind you and it clicks a second later.
You shake your head; the doors are one mystery too many. You put Nerela’s weapon in your phaser holster, and tuck her communicator into your belt. Then you head to the right, toward the security office.
The first thing you notice as you push the door open are the screens. Dozens of them. The second—
“Chris?” He’s frowning, pointing a phaser at you. He looks at you like he can’t believe his eyes. Like you’ve stepped out of a nightmare.
“Chris it’s me. I’m real. I’m really here.” You take a careful step through the doorway, keeping eye contact with his bloodshot blue eyes, letting the door close behind you.
“You don’t need to be afraid any more.” You think about what Number One had said. “This fear... it isn’t really you.” You stoop down and put your phaser on the floor. You take Nerela’s weapon and put that on the floor too. And as you do, something clicks into place in your mind.
“Chris, you’ve been helping me, haven’t you? Locking doors to keep me safe? To help me get where I needed to go?”
“I’ve been so... afraid. I—I needed to keep her—to keep you safe.” He relaxes his grip on his phaser a little, and you reach for your tricorder.
“You were drugged, Chris.” You scan him. “Number One and James are safe, they got a lower dose than you.” A much lower dose, you realise, looking at the numbers. “I sent them back to the shuttle and they returned to the Enterprise. I’m going to end all this, get us home. But I need you to stop pointing that phaser at me.”
He looks at his hand, holding the phaser, then back at you.
“But is she—are you real?”
Your heart melts for him. You haven’t said these words, but you’ve felt it for a while. And—you worried, you genuinely worried, that you would never get to say them. This may not be the moment you planned, but he has to believe you.
“Chris, I love you. I’m real.”
“I—” he drops the phaser, and it clatters to the floor. The next thing you know you’re in front of him, arms around him, holding him. You can’t think; you can speak. You just hold on, letting your body feel his warmth, his solidity. You may not have been drugged, but you had been so afraid
. After a moment he puts his arms around you, too, and you just stay there for a moment more. Holding him. Letting him hold you.
As much as you’d like to forget everything else right now, you still have a job to do. You pull back, take hold of his hand, and look at the security console. You can see feeds of the Room of State, the foyer, the other rooms you’ve been in, and other places, too. Beneath the monitors is a schematic; this is how Chris was locking and unlocking the doors, you realise. But how did he have the credentials to do so?
You look at the desk and see a ring like the one the Crown Princess gave you, nestled in a groove.
“How did you get that?” You ask.
Chris frowns. “I was in that big room, but I was so afraid. I came through the door. Went upstairs. Along the corridors. Looking for somewhere safe enough. I got here and the Caylaran... we struggled, he tried to shoot but I took his weapon.” You follow his gaze to an energy weapon on the ground. “Then he ran. And I stayed. I could see everything. Not get caught out. And then I saw you.”
You squeeze his hand, and work the controls with your other hand. There is a glyph that looks like a shield; you turn it off. You check your tricorder – finally you can detect life signs. Both Caylaran and Genai. As you do, Nerela’s communicator chirrups to life.
“Nerela? I swear, if this was you—! You have the worst timing! The Caylaran guard are here. Put the blocking field back up immediately. That’s an order! Nerela? Nerela, answer me! Ne—”
It lapses into static for a moment. Then silence.
“The Guard are here, Chris. As soon as the atmosphere clears we can go home.”

When you return to the Enterprise you go to the captain’s quarters. You know he won’t be there, but you need the sense of his presence. His smell.
Chris had to stay on the planet to complete the original negotiations and help deal with the Genai; the drug’s effects had faded by the time the atmosphere was passable again, and you’d got some water and rations into him. Spock came down and stayed, but you had only left Chris because he ordered you to.
You have a shower, put on one of his sleep shirts, and curl up on the sofa under his throw blanket to write your report.

“Sweetheart?” You wake up to Chris kneeling in front of you, hand on your shoulder. His hair is damp and he’s out of his uniform. Your brow creases for a moment – you don’t remember him using that endearment for you before.
“Chris,” you say, stretching. Pushing the throw away, and leaning into his touch. “You’re back.”
“I am.” His mouth quirks into a smile. “There was a lot to sort out; it seems the Genai and the Caylara have a dispute over a world on a system between them. The Genai thought if Caylara joined the Federation, we would take their colony from them. They thought if they disrupted the negotiation and killed Crown Princess Nanren, either we would give up, or the Caylarans would be too afraid to continue.” He moves his thumb along your shoulder.
“Spock put the fear of God into the Genai in orbit. I’m not sure how,” he adds, at your incredulous look, “but they and the Caylarans have requested mediation. And now the Genai want to work towards joining the Federation, too.”
“I wish they’d chosen to talk to us first,” you say, frowning. Thinking of the dead Caylaran. “These breakthroughs always seem to come at such a cost.”
“They do,” he says, gathering you into his arms. Holding you against him.
You stay in his arms for a while, just breathing. But eventually he pulls back, and moves to sit beside you.
“You were amazing today. You’ll be getting a commendation, but Crown Princess Nanren wanted me to convey her thanks, too. You saved her life.” He reaches into his pocket, then leans forward and fastens a chain round your neck. It’s delicate, golden, and from it hangs the ring that she had lent you for the computer. That you had given back before you left. “She wanted you to have this. But she thought a necklace might work better.”
You shake your head, taking hold of the ring. “Saving her was as much you as me, Chris. Locking those doors.”
He looks at you, thoughtful. “I don’t think so. I—I have never felt fear like I did today. Now I look back at it I can tell it wasn’t real, but at the time, seeing you on those screens, moving with purpose, helping our people and the Caylarans... you gave me hope.”
He pauses, blue eyes meeting yours. Hand reaching out to touch your face.
“When we were down there... I remember what you said to me. I love you too.”
You lean forward, meeting him for a kiss, gentle at first but it goes passionate almost immediately, both of you pouring your feelings for each other into the connection between you. You didn’t know it could feel like this, you think, before he pulls you into his lap and thoughts flee away.

“Lieutenant, I want to thank you.” Number One says, sitting at her desk. “I was not myself down on Caylara, but you did yourself proud. You saved us.”
“You’re welcome, Commander.” You smile. “I’d say any time, but right now I’d be happy if I never left the ship again.”
“That being said, if you tell anyone—”
“If I tell anyone you were crying, I can expect to spend the next month of duty shifts degaussing the transporter with a microresonator?”
“Oh that’s a good one. I must remember that. Yes. You will be degaussing, Lieutenant.”
“Understood.”
