it feels strange to me now that undertale garnered such a reputation for being edgy due to fan interpretations when the game itself is just SO earnest and sentimental that it hurts. like, it's a game about connection and friendship and love and it's so forward with that message that it gets silly with it, but that's just because it really really wants you to care. it's the least cynical game i've ever seen, even on it's worst routes

#like remember when del toro said the shape of water's love story was 'an antidote to today's cynicism' with how heartfelt it was #that's kinda how i feel about undertale #it's a game that's easy to dismiss as cheesy bc it wears it's heart on it's sleeve but it was clearly a labor of love and means all of it #utdr

the lord of the rings is so honest. so raw. so sincere. so unabashedly from the heart. no snide fourth wall jokes, no attempts to alleviate the heaviness. it is is wholeheartedly earnest in its dedication to portraying hope and love and faith and loyalty and courage, and that is what makes it feel like home to so many of us. it's true to itself. it doesn't pretend to be cool and care less. it cares, a lot, and that is a rare, beautiful thing. it warms our hearts to care for a piece of fiction that was made to care about and be cared about

and we know we aren't going to be punished or ridiculed by the work itself for loving it! no characters killed off cruelly, no plotlines abandoned, no shrugging of shoulders and "well real life is like that. get used to it." we have always needed escapism, and we always will. and middle earth will always be there to escape to

then they started fighting Covid precautions.

now my parents think climate change is a myth.

i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that racism was a plague, that we had to love and accept everyone, that we should never judge before walking a mile in their shoes.

then they told me that protesting for my Black siblings was wrong.

i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that we needed to give to the poor. working at soup kitchens. making quilts. collecting food and money and supplies. building houses. because it was the christian and just plain right thing to do.

now they look at me, on food stamps with their grandchildren, and lament the "welfare state".

i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and that any rich man, especially an immoral one, should never run our country.

The way that Eve and Villanelle naturally are, and what they unconsciously offer are profoundly the things that each character needs. Villanelle brings so much energy, vitality, possibility, strength and so much violence and sexuality. These are the elements that for Eve, have been on pause, or not ever explored.
