She hears Lan Wangji get up and cross the room. She thinks of getting up too, of stopping him. She thinks of the blood gushing out of Lan Wangji stomach and of him limbing to the table. She can hear him limbing now. She thinks about Wen Ning, of how much he needs his medication. She doesn’t move.

She hears the sound of flesh hearing and she hears Jiang Cheng’s last breath. She hears them taking the body away. Then all she hears is silence.

“Wen Qing, I have a nephew!” Wei Wuxian had squealed at her, years ago, and his smile had been brighter than a million sun. He had started to dance in the living room and Wen Ning had joined him in his infernal dance, toppling the furniture around them. She doesn’t remember much else about this night except that their home had been filled with laughter and that the food had tasted like hope.

She closes her eyes and pretends she doesn��t hear a little boy crying in the distance.
