he’s such a fangirl. he definitely has a few scrolls of adventures (and fanfiction) of the Blue Spirit and reads them every night while giggling and kicking his feet in the air.
For those who want to see the full translation of Lan Wangji’s invitation letter to Wei Wuxian at episode 31, here you go.
Written letter:
送呈
魏嬰今日安否 金氏子軒公子與江氏之女喜得貴子 將滿百日 金氏設宴金麟臺 眾親朋來賀 嬰當以禮赴之
藍忘機
Translation:
To submit
Wei Ying, are you well today? Young Master Zixuan of the Jin clan and Lady Jiang have been blessed to have a son, who is about to reach a hundred days. The Jin clan will hold a banquet in Jinlintai (Koi Tower). A lot of relatives and friends will come to celebrate. According to the ritual, Ying should attend.
Lan Wangji
The lovely thing here is that, lwj started the letter with, “are you well today?” showing his concern to wwx in the most formal way, telling him ‘I’m here, I’m still by your side. Are you okay? 🥺’ He even dropped wwx’s surname and directly called him ‘Ying’ 😭 If this was wwx, he would 100% call lwj ‘Zhanzhan’ or ‘A-Zhan’ 😭

My friend Yilin (she/they) does a lot (A LOT) of work translating literature from Chinese to English, among other things. And they allowed me to signal boost this on tumblr since she doesn't have one yet.
The beginning of the thread is here: https://twitter.com/yilinwriter/status/1670305203206385665 and all the tweet images below are not described because they are previews of direct links to the tweets.
Key points: The British Museum stole their translation work and used it, uncredited, in a major exhibit where they "appeared in photos on a giant display, on signage, in a physical guide, in a digital guide, in an audio guide, and in an app that is available for international download. How did NO ONE catch there was no credit?"
The response from the British Museum has been enormously disappointing so far:
"we will not be reinstating the translations in the exhibition that have been removed following your complaint, and therefore you will not be acknowledged in the exhibition as your work will not be featured" - except the uncredited translations are still in the 30,000 copies of the exhibition catalog.
Go check out more updates downthread as the situation develops.
Want to support Yilin?
"If you want to write to them or have written to the BM, you can help convey these demands of mine to them: - credit + public apology everywhere the work appears - proper payment (increased to account for lack of prior permission given & all the time the work was uncredited)"
Boost Yilin's book! "The Lantern & the Night Moths, an anthology of Chinese poetry that I selected & translated, featuring poets incl. Qiu Jin, accompanied by my essays on translation, forthcoming w/ @/invisibooks in Spring 2024"
Feitan does not like giving out compliments. So much so that you've grown used to the smart ass remarks and little insults wat he would throw wat you. At this point you find them to be terms of endearment. But there are times in the quiet moments when he'll tell you little things in his first language. Knowing that you won't understand what he's saying, he'll whisper compliments to you and watch your nose scrunch up in confusion as you pester him to tell you what he said.
Chinese Grand Prix 2016 cool-down room. everyone remembers the iconic seb blowing up at kyvat but before that he actually congratulates nico in german, needs to get his attention like 4 times. (there's also a longstanding belief that nico spoke in german in cooldown rooms only to mind game lewis, but it's actually seb who would start speaking to nico in german first)
rough translation because nico's voice is muffled and seb swallows half his words:
seb: (FOUR TIMES) nico, you won't be able to sleep tonight huh? - you won't be able to sleep tonight, 'cause you're so well rested - I said, you won't be able to sleep tonight, you're so well rested, it was so quiet up front/you were so untroubled up front...
nico: something was possible today lol
and then seb turns to kyvat to yell at him in English 😭😭 (and here's Nico's reaction)
AJ: Again with that pretentious prosecutor. He's so infuriating!
(Got it!)
AC: I can hear more joy than anger in senpai's voice despite senpai testifying on feeling infuriated. What's up with that? Oh, I know! Could it be that senpai's the type to say one thing but completely mean the other? I never took you for a tsundere!
Good evening and please take these 5/2 human beans gently in your palms.
Hmm? Where are they from, you ask?
Why, it's the one and only Things That Bleed! Written by @ghostly-cabbage , @kkachis , and @artistfingers . In which it establishes the possibility of sometimes family being a child spy, a scary scary assassin, and an eldritch horror boy.
Recently went back for a ... I honestly lost count how many times I've re-read this story. It's a gift that just keeps on giving, sometimes I just like go back to get soaked in the Scenery of quiet and restless hotels and underground parking lots and long car rides. hohoho don't let these mundane elements deceive you >:)
One thing I like to imagine is the post-reveal relationship these three may have, when Alex and Yassen get comfortable around Danny's ghost form, how they might just sit around in some rundown motel figuring out the next course of action but like. With a fun-sized eldritch noodle spreaded out on the bedsheets. Draped over the TV. Curled up in the cool tub or mini fridge. Rolling and eeling under the bed. Letting Alex wear him like a scarf. Yeah... yeah.
I am not certain how soft and fluffy these three can be when they spend enough time (and experience some Horrors) together, so these may be a bit ooc. but, well. I had fun drawing and I have faith in them💪

“宫、商、角、徵、羽” Gōng Shāng Jué Zhǐ Yǔ · The pentatonic scale in Chinese music
"Gong Shang Jue Zhi Yu" was first documented in the Spring and Autumn Period more than 2600 years ago. The five tones are the basic scales of Chinese ancient music. Compared to the seven-tone scale of Western music - minus the semitone ascending "fa" and "si", Gong is roughly equivalent to 1 (Do), Shang is roughly equivalent to 2 (Re), Jue is roughly equivalent to 3 (Mi), Zhi is roughly equivalent to 5 (So), and Yu is roughly equivalent to 6 (La). In the Tang Dynasty, “合、四、乙、尺、工” "Hé Sì Yǐ Chǐ Gōng" were used.
So I rewatched the confrontation scene between Wei Ying, Jiang Cheng, and Lan Zhan in the Jiang Ancestral Hall.
In the novel, Jiang Cheng mocked the fact that what Wei Ying and Lan Zhan have for each other is romantic and not just that of friends. And people kept saying that this scene in the novel has more impact etc etc… because Jiang Cheng really insulted them that they’re in love. I’m not going to invalidate that… but I’m just going to explain why this scene in the drama has a great impact too.
In the drama, Jiang Cheng insulted their great friendship. I haven’t seen people point this out… but what Jiang Cheng really said didn’t mean the usual “friendship.” He could have said “友誼” or “交情” which means the type of friendship we’re all aware of.
But Jiang Cheng didn’t say any of those! He said “知己 (zhiji)” or “confidant” or “soulmate”— the very word that both Wei Ying and Lan Zhan say lovingly to each other (in the drama).
Jiang Cheng said: “为什么要道歉?为侮辱了你们这段伟大的知己之情吗?”
为什么 - why ; 要 - will (I) ; 道歉 - apologize ; 为 - for ; 侮辱 - insulting ; 了 - indicates past tense ; 你们 - your (plural) ; 这段 - this ; 伟大 - great ; 的 - of ; 知己 - confidant/intimate friend/soulmate ; 之情 - feeling/emotion; 吗 - indicating a question.
If we translate Jiang Cheng’s words directly, it would say, “Why will I apologize? For having insulted this great soulmate thing of yours?”
Note that 知己 isn’t commonly used in spoken language. It’s mostly seen in written texts only. But Wei Ying and Lan Zhan made 知己 their endearment for each other. Jiang Cheng used that very special and emotional word and tarnished it with his acrid mouth. He wasn’t just insulting their love but he insulted what they are to each other— the very nature of their relationship. (He wasn’t insinuating that they might be in love. He was outright attacking them for what they are.) He even emphasized the insult by adding 偉大 or ‘great’ sarcastically.
That’s why Wei Ying immediately lashed out. Because how dare Jiang Cheng ruin that special word he has with Lan Zhan?!
i just posted but i feel INSANE hua cheng’s entire appearance in the ghost groom arc is just symbolism.
when xie lian is alone (having sent everyone away, in danger but perfectly capable of fighting his way out), hua cheng steps in front of xie lian, offers his hand, and guides xie lian through the woods to where he needs to be. monsters cower before him, magical barriers don’t stop him, he steps on the skulls of enemies and crushes them so thoroughly that xie lian behind him feels like he is walking on flat ground. he doesn’t just swoop in without asking — he offers his hand, and waits, and xie lian willingly reaches out and lets himself be guided. and his grip is featherlight, even as he steers xie lian through danger and darkness. his blood rain warns away all who would dare harm them, but xie lian doesn’t get hit by a drop. and hua cheng does this all in his true form, not in disguise, because he’s not playing a character or trying to achieve anything, this is just him. despite not being confident enough to face xie lian directly, hua cheng has already shown him exactly who he is.
(now excuse me while i gnaw through an entire wall because how was this not glaringly obvious to me all along)
對你的好 給你擁抱
Being good to you, holding you in my arms
被我圍繞 是否煩惱
Revolving around you, I know when you're troubled
無理取鬧 我也知道
And I know when you're trying to pick a fight
唯一祈禱 陪你到老
My only prayer is to grow old with you
不明白 不意外 這一切不能重來
I don't understand but I'm not surprised, that we don't get a do-over
不擁抱 不應該 別用說都能明白
I understand even without words, that we shouldn't hold each other
懷抱希望 只剩下無奈
Embracing hope, but only left with a sense of helplessness
要明白 這依賴 卻不是一種關懷
I understand this dependence is not a show of care
別期待 沒期待 期待剩一片空白
No more expectations, only emptiness remains
懷抱期望只剩下傷害
Embracing expectations, but only left with pain
未知的我們 未來的我們
We don't know what the future of "us" looks like
別再掙扎就會很愉快
Stop resisting and we will be happy
拋開了是非對錯 只想與你相愛
Throwing away the notions of right and wrong, I just want to be in love with you
我不會感到後悔 也不再徘徊
I won't regret and will stop wandering
擁有你的 未來
This future with you in it
要明白 這依賴 卻不是一種關懷
I understand this dependence is not a show of care
別期待 沒期待 期待剩一片空白
No more expectations, only emptiness remains

擁有你的 未來
This future with you in it
是我偽裝自己獨自心澎湃
I'm putting on a mask, hiding the cresting waves in my heart
忍不住眼淚 轉過身不想讓你看清楚
Unable to hold back my tears, I turn around so you can't see
如果可以重來 想要對你說
If we can start over, I want to tell you
我 和你 永遠不分開
You and I will never be apart
現在你和我 未來你和我
You and I in the present and future
不用掙扎 已經很快樂
We don't need to struggle anymore, we're already happy

“How Often Does Such a Bright Moon Come Around?” (水調歌頭 · 明月幾時有) Translation
(Another year, another Mid-Autumn Festival, another poem translation. This particular poem is very famous because of the first and last lines, which are frequently referenced in popular culture. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!)
How often does such a bright moon come around?
By Su Shi (Song dynasty, 1076 AD)
Mid-Autumn of the year Bingchen (2), drank all night in celebration, became heavily inebriated. Composed this poem to commemorate this occasion, and in dedication to Ziyou (3). (4)
How often does such a bright moon come around? With wine in hand, I ask the heavens.
Wondering what year it is for this day in heaven (5), in the palace high above.
Wishing to ascend on the wind, yet I cannot stand the chilly air around those lofty towers of jade.
Dancing and amused at my own crisp shadow, the frigid heavens surely cannot compare to the mortal realm below.
Rounding the vermilion building, hanging low near the intricate windows, the moon casts light over the sleepless (6).
The moon should not feel bitter jealousy, so why is it only full on parting?
Humans feel grief and joy, partings and reunions, just as the moon waxes and wanes.
For both of these heartening things (7) to happen together is very rare indeed.
May we be blessed with longevity, so that even when thousands of li (8) apart, we can still gaze upon this wonderful moon together.

Notes:
This poem is in the Ci/词 format, and follows the rhyme scheme (Cipai/词牌) called Shuidiaogetou/水調歌頭/水调歌头.
Bingchen/丙辰 is a year in the Chinese Sexagenary Cycle, which is known in Chinese as Tiangandizhi/天干地支 ("Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches") or simply Ganzhi/干支 ("Stems and Branches"), and is used to record time. This system has been in use since at least the Shang dynasty around 3000 years ago (oracle bone artifact bearing inscriptions of ganzhi has been found at Yinxu/殷墟, the archaeological site of the ancient capital of Shang dynasty; however, during Shang dynasty the Ganzhi system was used to track days and not years, unlike how it has been used in later times). Because there are 60 years in one cycle, it is possible to trace back to specific years. In this case, Bingchen would be exactly 1076 AD.
Ziyou/子由 is the courtesy name of Su Shi's brother, Su Zhe/蘇轍.
This section is a short introduction to the poem, which begins after this section.
This may be a reference to the concept that "a day in heaven is a year on earth" ("天上一天,地上一年"; famously included in Journey to the West), which in turn is a reference to the ecliptic plane (called Huangdao/黄道 in Chinese), since for an observer on Earth, the Sun appears to move in an elliptical path throughout the year. This means that it takes a year (i.e. "a year on earth") for the Sun to "complete" one round in this elliptical path (i.e. "a day in heaven").
Here, "the sleepless" is a reference to the poet himself.
"Both of these heartening things" refers to reunion with family and/or friend, and the occurence of a full moon.
Li/里 is a traditional unit of distance. During Su Shi's time (Northern Song dynasty, 960 AD - 1279 AD), 1 Li ≈ 576 meters = 0.576 km or 0.36 miles (Note: link leads to pdf).
