This is interesting. Not often a completely unknown cult is found. Seems pretty widespread, too. How'd we miss that one?

How is the cult from Midsommer white supremacist? Because they are swedish and borrow from paganism? The nazis appropriated Norse culture, they even misused different runes and symbols, and Scandinavia is one of the most tolerant regions in Europe.
There's Nazi imagery throughout the film, & the fact that all the poc die first is no mistake. Ari Aster himself has said that the Harga are White Supremacists:
Defying an outdated horror trope, Aster does not kill off Josh (William Jackson Harper) — the only black character for miles — first. As Aster points out, though, the Hårga are racist, a callback to “a part of Swedish history and European history,” and all of the “outsiders” or “new blood” recruited for mating are purposely white.
“He’s thrown away in a way that the other members of the main cast are not," Aster notes. “And that is because these people have no further use for him.”
The Harga, when not inbreeding with each other, go out and groom new members to either 1. Be sacrified or 2. Introduce new genes by manipulating people into the cult or drugging & raping them (what they did to Dani & Christian), & they ONLY pick white people for this. There are no nonwhite Harga & that's not an accident.
The script also makes it crystal clear that the nonwhite couple were specifically chosen (bc they are not white) & brought there to be sacrificed & were never going to live. The member that brought the nonwhite couple displays hatred & malice towards them when they're not looking, but doesn't do this with the other white outsiders
Tumblr media
(Ingemar is the Harga that brought Connie & Simon, the nonwhite couple). Connie & Simon didn't do anything wrong, they didn't do anything outright to insult the Harga. The only thing they did was be shocked about seeing the ritual suicide & express desire to leave (and they weren't the only ones who did this, Dani also did). And yet they were some of the first to die.
Even the visuals-- the Harga wear all White, it's always in blinding daylight. Whiteness is a GLARING theme. There's also foreshadowing early on in the film, where a book titled "The secret Nazi language of the Uthark" featured in Christian's room just before they go to Sweden.
There's also other Nazi ideology present within the Harga, such as the strict gender roles (the women all wear dresses & cook & clean & care for the children together but the men butcher the bear together), eugenics & ableism (the elderly are killed off at a certain age because they see disability & needing to be cared for as an elder "shameful", which is what one Harga states at the ritual suicide scene, & of course killing off the nonwhite characters), the "return to tradition" ideology (there are NO modern technology in the community, & it's in the countryside).
You see a cult full of ONLY White people, using Norse paganism (something VERY popular with Nazis) in an isolated area, who routinely murder poc, don't intermix with poc, kill off their elderly, Dani (the blonde, light eyed white girl) is praised for her beauty & made their May queen by the Harga, with strict gender roles, & this film was made by a JEWISH MAN to show the Harga as the bad guys, & you don't have a hunch that the Harga are maybe supposed to be white supremacists/nazis? That doesn't raise any red flags for you?
& let's not forget how Scandanavia committed genocide against the Saami, the Indigenous population who were there for hundreds of years before anyone else. That's a little off topic, but as a First Nations Canadian I aint gunna let that just go unacknowledged. Scandanavia has a white supremacy problem too, & Ari Aster is right for pointing it out

The main reason it's important to be at least somewhat literate in historical paganism and folk magic isn't so you can make your own practice exactly like it; it's to be able to recognize when someone is making historically inaccurate claims, because "asserting made-up shit about history as real fact" is a sign you're possibly looking at a cult and/or scam.
For the same reason, it's a good idea to be somewhat literate in pop culture media. Because being able to look at something a person is trying to pass off as Genuine Ancient Tradition or something and recognize that it's nothing like anything people actually believed or did back in Ye Olden Times but it sure as heck resembles something from a popular TV show or TTRPG is a valuable discernment skill.

Hey kids,
Let's talk about "woo-woo" people red flags, shall we?
If you've been in the occult, mystical, witchcraft game for long enough, you've probably seen your fair share of weirdos.
You know.
The ones who think the antisemitic conspiracies are real. The essential oils can cure cancer types. The guy who seems cool at first then seems convinced that the hand of God is in the Sahara desert.
There's more to being grounded in this community than avoided the racist norsepagans.
You are intelligent. You are wise. You have a world of resources and knowledge at your fingertips. And yet!
YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO CULTS
It never starts out feeling crazy. It never feels crazy in the moment. Believing aliens built massive structures to channel energy around the world DOESN'T SEEM WEIRD. And it sure doesn't change when the entire group's thoughts collectively devolve into situations like Heaven's Gate.
No one who cut their hair and had their last meal at Marie Calendar's thought they were wrong.
YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO CULTISH THOUGHT. YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO MISINFORMATION.
Be so careful peeps. It's human nature to want to belong, to want to learn more. Speaking as a 3 time cult joined, it is so fucking easy to lose yourself in online forums, threads, group chats...

So my parents dragged me to a christian festival today. Here are some of my favourite interactions I had
My father: this is my eldest daughter, *deadname*. She really wanted to be here
Me, a nonbinary person with heaps of religious trauma, definitely not there out of free will: ‘sup
Me, just chilling around some stands:
Random christian: hey do you have a boyfriend and is he catholic
Me, a lesbian: Jesus is my boyfriend
Random christian again: do u want a t-shirt with “hype jesus” on it to show that ur christian
Me, a pagan witch: yes
Random christian yet again: what are u listening to?
Me: Take Me To Church from Hozier
Christian: Oh I love that song. Very nice to encourage young folks to worship god
Me: uh-huh
Me: I’m gonna read Catherine Nixey’s “The Darkening Age” in front of this pastor
My brother: now why would you do that
Me: for the aesthetic

Blessed Theogamia!

“With that the son of Cronus caught his wife in his arms and under them now the holy earth burst with fresh green grass, crocus and hyacinth, clover soaked with dew, so thick and soft it lifted their bodies off the hard, packed ground… Folded deep in that bed they lay and round them wrapped a marvelous cloud of gold, and glistening showers of dew rained down around them both.  And so, deep in peace, the Father slept on Gargaron peak, conquered by Sleep and strong assaults of Love, his wife locked in his arms.”
—Iliad, 14.413-421, translated by Robert Fagles
Rundown of the altar: my statues of Zeus and Hera on a golden plinth, standing in front of my "wedding portrait" (done by the INCREDIBLE @coloricioso). The incense is lotus oil. To the right are flowers in the flame colors associated with brides (and priestesses of Juno) in my Wifey water bottle from my wedding. To the left is a replica hydria depicting Zeus and holding peacock feathers, which my husband gave me for our household altar. In front is an altar box where I keep random love notes my husband gives me, also holding my wedding jewelry. The whole thing is scattered in lotus petals and olive leaves which I am definitely not going to sweep up and make into a tea out of curiosity.
My husband joined me under my veil to drink a toast to the anniversary couple 🥰

The Kharites (Charities)
The Kharites are goddesses of "grace, beauty, adornment, joy, mirth, festivity, dance and song". There are multiple Kharites in generations, separating them from the older Kharites. The older three Kharites are named Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia. The younger Kharites presided over many things such as "play, amusement, banqueting, floral decoration, happiness, rest and relaxation". They are all daughters of Zeus and Eurynome.
They had a cult, where they were mainly worshipped in Northern Boiotia and Paros.
In Athens, it is quoted that they were worshipped during the Thesmophoria, which takes place in the month of Pyanepsion, alongside Demeter and Kore (Persephone). (Aristophanes).
In Elis, it is described that in their sculpture, one of them holds a rose, one holds a die, and the other holds a myrtle branch. They are attendants of Hera and Aphrodite, which explains the connection of the rose and the myrtle branch that are also connected to Aphrodite. The die shows that of youth, since it is used by the maiden young.
In Boiotia, it is quoted that the city of Orkhomenos was "The Kharites's city, home of lovely dances." (Pindar) King Eteokles was the first to sacrifice to them, establishing them amongst the city by teaching the custom of their prayer and building their temple.
In Paros, the tradition of sacrificing to them without garlands or flutes was founded by King Minos, who was told of his son's death. He was in the middle of a sacrifice and ripped both of these things away from himself. He completed the ritual, however, which began tradition.

Hey folks, it's a massive red flag when somebody starts mashing up gods and/or divinities from different belief systems into a single mythos and basically presents it as the Absolute Spiritual Truth Ever. They're basically pushing a cult, so beware.

The Vocaism Neoreligion Masterpost !!
Starting off with some simple definitions ~ neoreligion : a religion created in much more recent years or times. fult : meaning 'faux cult'- a group similar to a cult in that it is a high control group, though without forcing members to join; a consensual cult. vocal synth : a 'program', usually represented by an anime-styled character, that can sing when given vocals to read and used with the compatible vocal synthesizer programs.
Now! Off to other important things.
Vocaism (vo-ka-ism) is a neoreligion or fult surrounding the worship of all vocal synths. I started this because of an intense, multi-year long hyperfixation on Hatsune Miku that made me view her as some kind of religious figure. I then began to grow a similar love towards other vocal synths, as they all helped me out of rough patches in many ways.
Here's some more specific details about Vocaism!
All UTAU, VOCALOID, SynthV, ETC. voice banks are individual 'deity' figures in this neoreligion. Fanloids and such are included in this!
Hatsune Miku is considered the 'main deity'- though that doesn't mean you should just worship her.
The beliefs of Vocaists coincide with certain Radqueer beliefs. (generally speaking; pro-para, pro-transid, and supporting others identities no matter how odd.)
Vocaism is based on love and support!
There is no specific way to worship in Vocaism, though listening to vocal synth music counts! (stream Binomi by Maretu- /silly)
Finally, feel free to send any questions you may have about Vocaism! I'd be happy to answer or help with anything ^^
