Hey, guys! Welcome to the Q&A for Star Trek: Athena.
This will be the first of many Q&A’s for STA. I’ve gotten a few questions that I hope will clear up things. Let’s get started!
Q1: What is STA?
It’s pretty much what it says on the box.
In keeping with Star Trek tradition, I’ve named this project Star Trek: Athena. It’ll be following the adventures of the crew of the USS Athena over the course of their three year mission.
Q2: When does STA take place?
So…here’s the thing.
We know that Star Trek has two timeline, TOS (Prime timeline) and AOS (Kelvin timeline.) The relationship between fans and the timelines…well it’s complicated. You either love it or you hate it or you begrudging like both of them. I’ve been fan since I was kid thanks to me discovering Star Trek while bored during the summer and looking for something to watch.
The problem is the story that I wanted to tell didn’t fit into the prime timeline because there is already so much packed in there so I ultimately gave up on it but then when I watched the 2009 Star Trek movie I realise that maybe I could make my story but still keep it Star Trek.
Thus, the idea for STA was born.
To answer everyone’s question, yes, it takes place in the Kelvin timeline. The story takes place in 2264 immediately after Star Trek Beyond.
Q3: Who is the crew?
Okay, so the crew is different. I kind of wanted a mix of both bridge crew and lower decks crew because I thought maybe it would be more interesting story wise. Star Trek Lower Decks did kind of influence a little bit of it but then so did The Next Generation.
I plan to release a crew profile soon so like you can get a preview of who is who and what their ranks are and what they do on the ship.
I had to do a lot of research both into the prime timeline and the Kelvin timeline about ldifferent ranks and ship classes and positions on the ship. So like I had a consult both memory alpha and beta, which was fun.
Keep your eyes out in the future because I will post a full post about our new characters - 8 of them in total - and then the minor characters.
Q4: What do you mean by ‘episodes’ being released?
Okay, I think we’re all familiar here with the format of Star Trek so I aimed to do something similar but in a writing form. It’s not a script or a fan made movie or anything like that. Think more on the lines of the novelisation of certain episodes of TOS, kinda like that but in a shorter format.
It’s going to be a three-year mission, so I am dividing this up into three seasons. I have everything already planned out and drafts are written. Each season will most likely have 10 to 12 episodes and I’m thinking of adding like a little short mini episodes probably like in between seasons just know small little stories or maybe like deleted scenes that I didn’t think made the final cut.
The first episode of STA will be posted on April 10. Hopefully there will be no delays but I look forward to everyone reading this because I’m really excited.
Q5: Why did you start this project?
For fun.
I’ve always been a very big fan of Star Trek, ever since I was kid.
It’s the kind thing that shaped me as a person. So it’s natural that I want write something as a tribute towards it
So came up with the idea of here’s my little star starship crew and they go off into space and there’s all these cool adventures but then they also learn these important lessons… i wanted it to be in spirit of the original Star Trek while adapting some of the newer aspects of modern day trek.
But then I was like okay this might be a stretch and I realised, is this just like me day dreaming or is this something I actually wanna do and then I formed the idea of STA.
Then you know they came with the whole hammering out all the details and deciding what I wanted to do and then finally I realised let’s put this in the kelvin timeline because you know there’s a lot of unknown about this timeline so it makes sense to have this crew in this timeline.
I hope I haven’t lost anyone on this but you have question, dont be afraid to DM me.

My Favorite Star Trek Fics
Well, after seven years of being in this fandom, I had to make one at some point.
You Don't Have to (Say Yes)
by luminousbeings
Rated: Mature
Word count: 192,321
The abridged sexual history of James Tiberius Kirk.
Or, Jim’s varyingly unhealthy idea of what sex is supposed to be (a it-gets-worse-before-it-gets-better story)
Please read the warnings before you decide to read this. This is one of my favorite fics ever, but I recognize that it is also very triggering for many people. What I do want to tell people about this story is that it's incredibly healing. Yes, it's very painful, but it's worth it for the way this fic handles everything. Other than pure plot, I also love this fic for its dialogue. There's a scene where it's nothing but dialogue, and it always amazes me how I didn't even realize there were no markers. I just knew who was talking because the author gives all the characters such distinctly beautiful voices. I've never been one for rereading, but for seven years now, it's been a tradition of mine to reread this fic from beginning to end every single year. For good reason. Hard recommend.
The Genetic Soap Opera (or, One of the Less Dignified Royal Weddings)
by waketosleep
Rated: Mature
Word count: 6,181
Turns out Jim Kirk's more than meets the eye, genetically speaking. There are a lot of consequences, mostly for Spock and his sanity.
A classic for a good reason. I usually stray away from shorter works because I get too attached, but this work was perfect in length. Just the right thing to get you laughing in the middle of the night while you're trying not to wake anyone up. I read this at least once every time I circle back into Star Trek.
West of the Moon
by distractedKat
Rated: Teen And Up Audiences
Word count: 71,443
They meet Jim in phases, and through him find each other. Once the layers begin to peel back, though, the future bridge crew of the Enterprise finds more than they ever could have dreamed. When the fight to keep him starts in earnest, the cadets and officers of Starfleet begin to learn that not all wars can be won.
Because long before he had friends, Jim had Family, and the Scaretta crime syndicate didn't survive to the 23rd century by letting go of its own.
Jim Kirk will always be a frustration to Spock--even when that's not his name.
I'm honestly surprised I haven't read this until now. I'm still in the middle of reading it, and I'm reeling both from how absolutely insane the idea of this fic was and how well-executed it remains. Insane stuff right here. Heartwarming and kicks right in the main crew feels with a special center on Chekov as the best guy ever.
Know All Your Enemies
by BAMFspock

"The thing about being able to tell what people are feeling and thinking is that people generally don't like that."
Jim can't deal with his problems, so he deals with everyone else's instead. Spock can't deal with his emotions, so he pushes them all away. Starfleet can't deal with a post-Kelvin universe in any way except badly.
And what exactly is t'hy'la, anyway?
A story about dangerous conspiracies, doomed crusades, inadequate coping, imperfect control, important connections, and taking care.
The fic that made me wish Jim was actually a telepath. I started creating fanfic in my head for this particular fic. I would think about this fic, and spend my entire break-time reading it every minute I could. That's how much I love this fic. Beautifully slow burn, but I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about the monstrosity (in a good way) that is this plot. It's huge. It's detailed. Somehow, it holds great cohesion despite all the factors. This fic's plot made me question my ability to creatively think. I also, of course, love the interactions between the entire cast and crew. I think Star Trek is Star Trek when the entire crew plays a big role in things. What an absolute delight.

When the Enterprise is asked to transport Vulcan colonists to their new home, Spock Prime comes with them.  His presence changes everything – and leads to certain revelations for Jim and Spock.  A story about growth, self-discovery, and new beginnings.
I am in love with this author, and I might put some more of their fics up here, but I'm sorely disappointed that they didn't transfer this fic into AO3. That, of course, did not stop me from reading it. I personally hate the formatting in the K/S archive, but I squinted through the starkly white pages just to take this entire fic in. Love for Leonard Nimoy aside, I just love the concept of Spock Prime. The idea that this guy we all know and love, this old man who has suffered the death of his loved ones—worse yet, his loved one—being allowed to see his crew and his Jim once again, but only from a distance? Fucking brilliant. I so wish JJ Abrams wasn't the one who thought the thing up. Anyway, this fic hits right in those places. I thought that by now it would be a tried and tired trope for me, but this fic defied those expectations and actually made me cry in the end.

5 months after Nero, tensions are high between Jim and his first officer Spock. After a crash landing on an unknown planet, they're rescued by kindly aliens…who happen to think Jim is Spock’s wife. A story about secrets and fruit.
The only unfinished fic I will put here, and for good reason. The summary is incredibly misleading in that it makes the fic sound like it's purely a comedy when it's so, so, so, so, so much more than that. I never expected to fall in love with an original world in fanfiction form, but I did, and I fell hard. I fell in love with the original characters that populate this story. I fell in love with the writer's style, the intimacy behind every interaction, and just the pure love that glows in every written word. I am incredibly sad that this fic hasn't and probably will never end, but to be honest, the author has given me enough emotionally to work with to the point where I can safely say that this is an unfinished fic I am truly satisfied by. I don't think I can say that for many other unfinished works.
The Morning After
by noodleinabarrel

Jim convinces Spock to take shore leave with him on Risa, hoping the time together will help re-solidify their bond of friendship after some recent tension. Meanwhile, Spock convinces himself he's on Risa for one reason and one reason only, to prevent his wayward captain from getting into trouble.
After a passionately illogical night of Romulan Ale and chocolate infused liquor, everything changes when Jim wakes with something other than a hangover filling his head. Something he's sure neither he nor Spock can handle. Because if Jim knows anything for sure, it's that his messed up thoughts belong nowhere near Spock's clean, ordered mind.
(Please remember to read the fic's warnings.) From what I remember when I first read this, this fic is very Spock and Jim-centric which means little interaction with the crew. That should already set alarms because I'm suddenly acting incredibly OOC because from my recs, you should know by now that I love crew dynamics and would sacrifice a main ship for them. But! This fic is an exception apparently. I love the interactions between Spock and Jim here. There's a sprinkle of Bones in there too which always makes everything better. A fic that gives you the hurt before proceeding to give you the best comfort in the world. Deals a lot with Jim's insecurities in a way that actually kind of helped me with mine. Trickle-down therapy through fanfiction is very real.
How to Inefficiently Acquire a Human Male in 98.6 Earth Days

When Jim Kirk joins the xenolinguistics club, Professor Spock is drawn to the cadet despite his better judgment. Soon, Spock finds himself in a friendship he never asked for, a relationship that is quickly evolving into something more than he can handle. In an effort to free himself from Kirk’s persistent affection, Spock makes use of his anthropological research on human relationships, which has unexpected consequences.
Yes, another noodleinabarrel fic. I am in love with them. I found this fic on one of those "find fic" pages on LiveJournal, and I can safely say that I will take great care never to lose this one for myself. I fell in love from premise alone. I never expected to love this fic as much as I did, but the characterizations? Noodleinabarrel absolutely killed it. Spock was a delight in this fic, and I somehow fell in love with Jim again just this time from a Spock perspective. The writing style is great of course. I've always found it hard to find fics that could successfully do a Spock POV without sounding like a dictionary recitation, and this author did it seemingly without effort. Please read if you want a short, fun, and funny way to spend an afternoon (or midnight or morning, if you're like me.)
A Logical Return

Alternately titled: A Very Chekov Easter: Prequel to A Logical Match
Jim gets front row seats to one of Spock's emotional epiphanies, but doesn't notice, of course.
Inspired by Jim's remark to Spock about awkward family dinners involving our favorite Navigator and his large family. This could still stand alone. Set directly after STID
I actually read this fic before I read A Logical Match. I actually love this fic much more than I love the original probably because of the whole crew dynamic again, but also because of the absolute hilarity the author crafts in just 15,000 words. Especially that ending. Talk about an ending; I just sat there guffawing at the screen at around 2 AM, screaming.

The life of five-year-old James T. Kirk changes when an elderly Vulcan lost in time crosses his path and saves him. In the years to come, as the boy grows up into a young man, Spock is his driving force, his mentor, his friend, a constant in his life.
Because in every universe, Jim Kirk is destined to meet a Spock. In this one, he gets to meet Spock twice and the experience defines him, shapes him into the person he is supposed to be. A child. A man. A genius. A captain. A son.
I don't think I've convinced you enough that I love Spock Prime. Let me show you again. Almost gave me a heart attack from just how pure it was. If you ever want to be happy? Read.
Another Life
By LullabyKnell
Rated: Teen and Up Audiences
Word count: 61,861
In one moment, James T. Kirk is the acting captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, on his way home to Earth after stopping the Narada. In the next moment, without explanation, James T. Kirk is an Academy cadet on academic probation again, barely a day before Nero will destroy Vulcan.
He dares himself to do better. And with a planet on the line and no proof but his own memories, he knows that "better" means he'll need some help.
Heartbreaking. To see Jim so desperately try to get everything back? Oh, God, don't even get me started on the plot. From the premise alone, you should be hooked, but please, please, please stay for the lovely characterization, for the great use of Pike, for the lovely Spock Prime, and for the absolute angst that is the prospect of time travel. Makes ties into TOS as well which is always a beautiful little thing. The Superior Fix-It Fic.
AT THE SAME STARS
By Spicyshimmy
Rated: Mature
Word count: 136,398
First Officer Spock of the USS Enterprise is part of the away team that discovers the survivors of Tarsus IV. Captain Pike assigns him to the curious case of James Tiberius Kirk, who steals one of Spock's sweaters. There were no sufficient Vulcan poetics to describe the emptiness of the colony as it was found on the morning of stardate 2249.43. The fully-completed residential sector was neither ugly nor beautiful but simply remote; a hollow landscape of metal alloys and sensible architecture, with determined vegetation growing alongside the support beams. They did not flower.
I binge-read this entire thing over the span of three consecutive days (in my defense, I had 12 hour work days for two of those three days.) I'm a killer for characterization, and the way the author crafted Spock and Jim's relationship was perfect and incredibly original. The slow progression to their love was made with such careful... attention to detail I guess is how you could call it. It might be weird to try to describe this, but as I read the fic, I had an image in my head of the author just... letting the words be. Like they were their children. If that makes sense. What I'm basically trying to say is that the author is great at their job to the point where you can sense their love for the characters, for the movies, and for the work itself.

Jim and Spock meet at the Academy as cadets, and history unfolds. A story of first meetings, tentative friendships, and findings of self. (Spans through the Academy Era and onward.)
(Warnings! Read them!) Okay. I lied. Here's another unfinished fic. But just like the last one, I have good reason again. In the notes for this work, the author admits this is their first Star Trek fic... and I just have to say... that is not at all obvious. In fact, you have no idea the sorrow I had when I realized this was their only Star Trek fanfic to date. The fanfic blows you away immediately with its prose. The entire story itself is immersive, and not just because of its word count. So much happens in this fic and yet somehow everything lies fresh in my head. Many painful experiences occur in this fic, and the writing was just so superb that for a second, I let the suspension of disbelief get to me. I just had to put my phone down and walk for a bit in some scenes. It took me days before I could continue down a certain act. I finish this fic in my head all the time. I thank the author for all the work they put into this.

Eventually, Jim will tell them about Tarsus. Eventually, he'll let Bones be his Doctor and accept that they all want to help him. Eventually, Jim will find out that which Pike would rather he never did.
Academy AU, where Pike and Boyce practically adopt Jim and Bones, Jim and Pike both keep secrets from each other, and Spock is thrown into the mix too.
(Warnings!!!) Some fics make you forget canon and accept their fiction as word. This is one of them. And God, I wish it was the real thing. I love this fic so much, yes, because of the interactions between Pike, Boyce, and Jim, but also for the fun writing style. God, I need to use better words for it. You'll get what I mean just from reading the first paragraph though. Each word, each sentence, each paragraph, every single thing this author puts down has a unique energy to it—an energy the author can use to literally any effect. I believe I first read Sanctuary around when it came out, so I have a long history with this one, and it's always a delight to rediscover it and relive the found family in this fic. I can't wait to read WhyMrSpook's other works tonight (read: this morning since apparently 1:00 AM is considered morning.)

Two months into his captaincy, Jim comes to a startling realization: he's deathly afraid of his first officer. Spock, meanwhile, starts to develop a crush.
"Jim's afraid of Spock" sounds terribly angsty, but this is mostly rom com with hints of angst and horror. Updates every Tuesday.
One of the greatest misunderstanding fics out there. That's really all I can say here. I feel like the premise should have already sold you alongside the author's tags of: "Romantic Comedy, Horror, this one's hard to categorize because spock thinks he's living in a rom com, while jim thinks he's living in a horror story." As soon as I saw this again in my iBooks I just knew I had to put this here. (Also unfinished for the last chapter, but I don't remember being dissatisfied by that at all. I think it actually stops at a good place.)

(Enlighten me again, the cadet says. He stands proud and stupid and human, blue eyes hinting danger as he takes in Spock and dismisses him in that same instant. He’s heard the rumors, everyone has. And so Spock tries.)
It happens in four moments.
Set in early 2260 and chronicling the first months of the five-year mission. Mostly epistolary, partly serious, partly pure crack.
I don't usually like fics with what is arguably texting in them, but there are exceptions to everything, and this is it. Is it weird that even though I don't have any friends in the Star Trek fandom because I'm a loser and that even though this fic was only relatively recently published (2020-2021), I consider this a classic? God, I love this fic. It's just so funny and somehow so emotional at the same time. Hits the right balance. I think I'll add this to my list of yearly re-reads (alongside the other fic with parentheses in its title.)

In spite of his reputation in the academy for being promiscuous, Jim's actually a virgin.
(Warnings. Again.) When I was writing this review, I was incredibly surprised to learn that the fic was so short considering in all of my memories, I had such a deep experience with this fic. Another one of the fics I delightfully rediscover everytime I circle back into Star Trek. So incredibly wholesome. I love Jim and Spock here, but Uhura takes the spotlight.

Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning.
A novel-length continuation of the 2009 movie told in four parts. Cross-posted from FFN.
Oh my god. I didn't even realize distractedKat had written two of my favorite fics. Anyway, this fic, especially the first part is permanently ingrained into my head. I remember this fic all the time. It's just an absolute classic for me and most likely the entire fandom. A must read. Love the crew, love the Genius!Jim in here, absolutely in love with the forever confused and obviously (to us at least) in love Spock.

Picard
Tumblr media
Maybe they should have named it "Star Trek: Suckhard". Get it? Get it? Because it sucks.
All right, this is season three finale, and the very last episode. So the Borg Queen (not the Jurati one, the original) has this whole bullshit plan that depends on assimilating Jack Crusher and using him to complete the assimilation of a bunch of twenty-something Starfleet officers assembled over Earth. The only ones who can stop her are Seven and Raffi on board the Titan, and the TNG gang aboard the reconstructed Enterprise-D. All Titan can do is distract the Borged-up fleet from attacking Earth. This buys time for Enterprise to track the Borg Queen to what is apparently the last functioning Borg Cube, hidden in the Jovian atmosphere.
As far as I can tell, stopping the Borg Queen's plan is actually pretty simple. There's a "beacon" they have to blow up, and that will destroy the whole cube in the process. Once they're out of the picture, the affected Starfleet crews will return to normal. The only problem is getting Jack Crusher out of the cube alive. Picard can't get through to him, so he connects himself to the Borg collective, something he vowed would never happen again. He can't convince Jack to leave, though, so he offers to stay with him to the end, and that seems to get Jack thinking straight. He yanks out all the cables and they leave together.
And this is why the Borg suck, because the writers keep trying to have it both ways. On the one hand, we're led to believe that Picard's assimilation was so thorough that there were still traces of it left behind that remained undetected. Those traces were passed on to Jack, which turned him into some sort of super-powered jerk, able to defeat four Changelings at once, and mind control people with his creepy red eyes. And yet, the moment he chooses to resist, all he has to do is pull out a few cables and he's free. Which is it?
In theory, the Borg Queen was all that was left of the Borg, unless you count xB's like Seven and Jack, or the Jurati Collective from Season 2. This whole caper involving Jack Crusher is presented like the last, desperate gasp of the Borg after they were nearly eradicated by Janeway at the end of Voyager. I would like to think that this means CBS/Paramount/whoever will use this as a clean break and future projects will be required to stop using the damn Borg so much. But Q appears in the post-credits scene, so if he's not dead then there's no reason to believe they won't bring the Borg back whenever it pleases them.
Seven gets promoted to Captain of the Titan, which is then rechristened Enterprise-G. Jack Crusher is assigned to serve as some sort of special counselor. Like, not a psychologist like Troi, but I think like an advisor in general? It seems appropriate, but I don't know what it means. The La Forge sisters are there, and I guess anyone else from the Titan who didn't get killed this season.
Her first officer is Raffi, who is now celebrated as a hero, thanks to Worf leaking information about her role in foiling the conspiracy. That's nice and all, and it's objectively good that Raffi's family is speaking to her again and everything. But it kind of bugs me that Raffi literally has to save the universe just to get that kind of approval. I don't like the message that sends, where the only way to get people to like you is to make some big achievement happen to distract from your flaws.
Anyway, the idea of an Enterprise-G kind of bothered me, but it's been about 30 years between D and G, so that's a fair amount of time for E and F to have their runs. And F was reportedly scheduled for decommission around the time of its first-and-only appearance, so it's basically in the same status as the Enterprises B and C.
Much of the episode is just a reinforcement of the problem introduced in the previous episode. There's a part at the beginning where Picard's group is basically just describing the situation in different soundbytes, as if they're taking turns reading lines that will be used in a trailer, or a "previously on..." segment for an 11th episode that doesn't exist. Despite its antiquated systems and lack of a proper crew compliment, the Enterprise-D never seems to be in any real peril. So everything just sort of hinges on Jack choosing to break free of the Borg, and I guess the idea was that he needed his dad to tell him how much he loves him for that to happen? I don't know.
There's a lot of ending sequences of the gang celebrating their win. They all hug on the Enterprise bridge, Worf falls asleep, Data gets counseling sessions from Troi, Beverly becomes an admiral and her son joins Starfleet. Finally we see them all drinking toasts in Guinan's bar, and Picard whips out a deck of cards and they play poker through the credits. It's supposed to tug at my sentimentality, but it doesn't.
I already watched these folks play cards like this 30 years ago. It was how the series finale ended.
I've already seen them defeat the Borg Queen.
I've already seen Data get emotions. I've already seen Picard wrestle with fatherhood. Remember that guy Daimon Bok turned into a fake son of Picard?
The whole thing just doesn't work for me. The idea is to bring back all these characters and continue their story, but they can't come up with new ideas for the story. It all boils down to repeating ideas we've seen before. I missed TNG when "All Good Things" ended, but at no point was I thinking "I need to see them play poker again." That was never the point.
I think this is where the hype for "Star Trek: Legacy" has come from. As far as I can tell, no such production actually exists, but people who worked on Picard have spoken positively about it in the abstract. Sure, do a show with Captain Seven on the Enterprise-G. No one's saying no, but I don't think anyone's actually making the show right now. Fans take that as a guarantee, though, so all the promotional stuff I see for it is just fanart. Ultimately, the fans are less concerned with seeing the familiar old faces and more interested in seeing new stories that build off the old ones. If Geordi or Tuvok shows up, great, but that's not the real meat of it.
But I don't think the Star Trek franchise is inclined to make a show like that. They want to do these big movies-disguised-as-TV-shows, or whatever this Picard thing has been. And they'll want to push all the big buttons and tell big sprawling tales, and the only way to pay for all of that spectacle, they think, is to rely on old, established IP like Q and the Borg.
I haven't given up hope on a good Star Trek show happening. I still need to watch Lower Decks and I think that'll be promising, but I once thought Picard would be adequately mediocre and it's thoroughly disappointed me at every turn. I can't un-recommend this show enough. Avoid Star Trek: Picard if at all possible.

Tom Sawyer's Whopper of a Tale: The Krasnikov Tube Adventure
Well, butter my biscuit and call me a catfish! If it ain't Tom Sawyer here, back from another one of my harebrained adventures. This time, I've got a tale that'll make your toes curl and your eyes pop wider than a bullfrog on a hot skillet. Folks, let me introduce you to the Krasnikov Tube - a whirligig of a thing that's got more twists than a pig's tail.
You see, one fine summer day, while I was moseying along the banks of the mighty Mississippi, I stumbled upon something mighty peculiar. It was a hidden door, rustier than my Aunt Polly's old skillet, and it led straight to... well, I reckon you'd call it the future! And the name of this secret passageway? The Krasnikov Tube.
Now, hold your horses! I know what you're thinking - "Tom, you've been out in the sun too long!" But this ain't no fish story. This Krasnikov Tube, named after some feller named Serguei Krasnikov (must've been a cousin of Injun Joe or somethin'), is as real as the freckles on my face. It's a shortcut, see, but not the kind you take to skip school. This one cuts right through space-time, like a hot knife through butter.
Imagine this: you're trying to get from St. Petersburg to Aunt Polly's house for supper. Normally, you'd have to trek through fields, jump over fences, and avoid that grumpy old Mr. Dobbins. But with this Krasnikov Tube, it's like you've got a secret tunnel that gets you there in a blink!
Now, the science behind this is trickier than trying to snatch a catfish with your bare hands. They say it's all about bending space-time, kinda like how I bend the truth when Aunt Polly asks if I've done my chores. But instead of a mischievous boy's imagination, you need something called 'negative energy.' Sounds like the kind of energy I have when I'm doin' math homework!
But here's the kicker: travelin' through this Krasnikov Tube would be faster than a rabbit with its tail on fire. We're talkin' quicker than light, folks! It's like racing a steamboat while you're sittin' in a canoe. Only, in this story, the canoe's got a motor as powerful as a hundred horses.
Now, I can see you scratchin' your heads, wonderin' if I've lost my marbles. But this Krasnikov Tube isn't just a figment of my wild imagination. It's got scientists and big brains all riled up and dreamin' of zipping through the stars like it's a Sunday stroll.
So, there you have it - my latest caper, "Tom Sawyer Explores the Krasnikov Tube: A Wild Scientific Space Adventure." It's a story filled with twists and turns, a bit like trying to untangle fishing line after it's been in Huck's hands. And who knows? Maybe one day, we'll all be taking shortcuts through the cosmos, faster than you can say "Jiminy Cricket!"
But 'til that day comes, we'll keep our feet planted on solid ground and our heads filled with dreams of the stars. And if you're itching to learn more about this Krasnikov Tube and all its space-time shenanigans, why, just take a gander at the article. It's got all the nitty-gritty details, explained plain and simple, like I'm talkin' 'bout one of my river adventures. So, grab your fishing pole and your sense of wonder, and let's dive into this wild ride through science!

please share what you have to say about food cubes!!
I was feeling a little apprehensive about releasing the TOS Food Document™ because it is so damn long…. But since you asked anon
DISCLAIMER:
This is focused solely on food as it appears in the original series. Whatever explanation of food synthesizer/replicator that may come in later series does to apply here. I am also not a Star Trek expert. I’m sure there is some super fan out there who knows everything there is to know about food in TOS, but that person is not me. This is just my thoughts as I’ve observed instances where food is shown or mentioned in TOS. If my thought process is flawed, or I make some claims that don’t really make sense, I am sorry. The food canon is very complicated and vague, so this is me just trying my best to make sense of it. I’d also like to mention I did not explicitly cover the meal scene in What Are Little Girls Made Of? Or the ice cream scene from And The Children Shall Lead, but I do make reference to them. I’m sure there are other food scenes I didn’t get to cover here, so if I’m missing a few pieces, I’m sorry.
Anyway… let’s get into it!
The original series, food, and other things that keep me up at night
I don’t care about continuity or plot holes in Star Trek: The Original Series, and if I did, I think the show would become rather unwatchable. It’s not about what happens to get us from plot point A to B, but more important that we do get there (ie, who cares how or why Spock’s brain has been removed from his body, it’s more important that we do get it back inside).
This being said, there is one aspect to TOS that baffles me to no end, and its something I just cannot overlook: the food. Food, the entire concept of it as it appears in TOS haunts me. Each time they show or mention food it makes less and less sense. It’s a never-ending nightmare and I spend every day trying to understand what goes on in the Enterprise Cafeteria. Today I would like to explore a couple food instances on TOS, and hopefully make a little sense of what is happening.
The first chilling incident: The Man Trap (S1E2) - Rand is a thief
Tumblr media
In this episode, we see Yeoman Rand on her way to deliver Sulu his meal. She is carrying a tray of colored food cubes (which is what I will be referring to them as here, because there is no official name) and what we can assume to be some kind of alien variant of celery (earth celery with some red crap stuck on top). While waiting for the turbo lift, Rand eats one of the celery sticks intended for Sulu. My question is why. Like literally why does this happen. Sulu never mentions it (maybe he doesn’t notice). She never mentions it to him, which means we can assume she doesn’t want him to know. So why is Rand stealing food? Does she not get enough to eat? Is the limits for how much you get to eat on the Enterprise that strict you need to turn to thievery to get a proper meal? and if that the case, she’s shorting Sulu on his allotted food. In this same scene, we see Ensign Green (who is really a salt-sucking monster) make a grab for the tray as if he too is going to steal Sulu’d food. However, Rand slaps his hand away and asks “who do you think you are?”, a hypocritical statement considering Rand is also in the act of stealing food. So Rand, I must pose the same question to you. This scene has no resolution, so any interpretation is up to the viewer. Whether you think Rand's actions make her a girlboss or a thief, is up to you, however, one thing is undeniably true: Rand eats food off other people's plates.
Other food-related things of note in this episode is that Sulu sprinkles salt on the celery sticks. This means they are either bland or that's just his personal taste. Also, when Rand gives him his tray, he says “may the great bird of the galaxy bless your planet” and this has nothing really to do with food, I just thought it was kind of badass.
Tumblr media
(Sulu’s food tray with 3 celery instead of 4 because Rand ate one)
Incident two: Charlie X (S1E3) - synthetic meatloaf
Tumblr media
In Charlie X, we see Captain Kirk make this comment in passing:
“Today on earth it is Thanksgiving, if the crew has to eat synthetic meatloaf I want it to look like turkey.”
This statement leaves us with a couple undeniable truths:
1. Meatloaf is a meal option on the Enterprise.
2. It is synthetic, meaning the meatloaf may not contain any meat at all.
3. It is not shaped like turkey, but it is possible to do so.
if the meatloaf served on the Enterprise is synthetic, then it very well could be made out of the same stuff the colored food cubes are made out of. Also, (and this is pure speculation so take it with a grain of salt) since we never hear anyone refer to the colored food cubes by name, they could literally be the “synthetic meatloaf” that Kirk is referring to here. In this case, the term synthetic meatloaf would not mean a synthetic version of the popular American dish meatloaf but instead loafs of synthetic meat. Since we do not know exactly what synthetic meat looks like, it very well could be brightly colored cubes.
In either case, Kirk is asking them to turn synthetic food from one shape to another. We understand this is possible through the food synthesizer, however, if all the food they eat on the Enterprise is synthetic anyway, then why did Kirk specifically mention synthetic meatloaf in the shape of turkey? would the turkey not instead be made out of synthetic turkey? why must the synthetic turkey be made specifically out of meatloaf? isn’t every single food that comes out of the food synthesizer made out of the same thing? It would have made more sense for Kirk to say “it's thanksgiving so can you made the food synthesizers produce turnkey?”. However, Kirk is like, a really cool guy, so it is possible that the meatloaf comment is just a fun joke. Either way, we know that synthetic meatloaf is a standard menu item on the enterprise, yet we have never seen anyone consume it.
Incident 3: The Corbomite Maneuver (S1E11) - Green leaves
Tumblr media
In this episode, Kirk goes in for a physical, and Doctor McCoy reports that the captain is 2 pounds overweight. In response to this, the Doctor changes the captain's dietary card to help him lose a little wight (🙄). We later see the captain served a “dietary salad” in place of his usual meals. The existence of dietary salad is interesting for many reasons. Most importantly, we understand that dietary salad is somehow better for you than what is usually served on the Enterprise. It most likely has a lower caloric intake than say, colored food cubes. However, as discussed before, most if not all the food on the Enterprise is synthetic. If the food is created, and not naturally made, then one can assume its caloric value can be controlled. Would it not be possible to make a lower-calorie version of colored food cubes? one would assume that the cubes are made to have the perfect amount of nutrients to satisfy yet keep humans a healthy weight if they are in fact a form of synthetic man-made food. How would the captain overeat, if portions are pre-determined by dietary cards? Is Kirk somehow going rouge and consuming food that is not created by the food synthesizer (the captain's secret cookie stockpile??).
The existence of this salad also begs another question: is it synthetic as well, or are they growing fresh salad on the Enterprise? We do know that they are able to grow things on the ship, however, there has never been any discussion of growing crops specifically for consumption. If this is the case though, it may explain why we often see crew members eating celery sticks. Perhaps things like celery sticks and dietary salads are grown on the Enterprise, but all other food is synthetically created. In which case, who’s job is it to harvest food and prepare it for meals? Did Rand have to put that dietary salad together all on her own?
Tumblr media
One more interesting point about the Salad: When Kirk first receives it, he asks
“what in the devil is this? Green leaves?”
which prompts Rand to explain that it’s a salad. It is very possible that Kirk genuinely has no idea what a salad is. He may have never had one, nor heard of the food in his entire life. Later we see him eat the salad with his hands, which further proves the point that captain kirk doesn't know what salad is. Why captain Kirk would somehow have no knowledge of salad is up to speculation.
Incident 4: The conscience of the king (S1E14) - Cry over spilled milk
Tumblr media
In this episode, Lieutenant Riley is served colored food cubes and a glass of what appears to be milk. There isn’t much of significance here, other than the fact we know it is possible to get a glass of milk with your meal on the Enterprise. Unlike Sulu, Riley doesn’t have any celery sticks but seems to have a larger serving of colored food cubes as compensation. We also learn that milk is served in a large glass, something that seems very impractical on a starship.
Tumblr media
Riley proves my point moments later when he spills milk on a control panel and shatters the glass. This begs the question, who is going to clean that up?
Incident 5: Tomorrow is Yesterday (S1E20) - Chicken noodle soup
Tumblr media
In this episode, the Enterprise accidentally beams a 60′s army man abroad their ship (for the second time). This random chad ensign asks the man if he’s hungry because he’s a troll I guess and he wanted to flex their cool future food machine. The army captain guy is like sure, I could go for some chicken soup right now (a very natural response to being beamed onto a spaceship for the first time). Chad ensign has like three cards in front of him, and I guess one of them just happens to be chicken soup because he puts it in the machine and the soup appears. Grant it, we never actually get to see the soup with out own eyes, but the army captain does seem to be pretty convinced that it is chicken soup just by the smell. This opens up a couple possibilities:
-The food synthesizer can make almost anything you want, and the card is maybe like a very broad category, like a dinner card, and when you put it in you can pick any dinner food you’d like.
or
-The food synthesizer can only make what is specific to each card, and the ensign just got extremely lucky and happened to have a card that was the exact food the army captain wanted.
More evidence, which we will go over later, points more towards the theory that one card is equal to one specific type of food. In this case, it is unclear how the synthesizer food cards are distributed, or how you get your pick of what food you would like. It is also more likely that options would be limited. This does make sense, however, it makes this scene very confusing, as, as I’ve pointed out, the ensign had a very limited number of cards, but exactly what the captain had asked for. Pure luck? what mind game was that Chad ensign trying to play with the poor man who was abducted from earth... we will never know.
One more very interesting thing is established here: The transporter room has a food synthesizer. Why this is is purely up to speculation. In my mind, having a food synthesizer in the transporter room would be like having a full kitchen where you park your car. Seems pretty useless, but maybe the guys in the transporter room requested easy access to snacks? Why the transporter room would get this special privilege is again, up to speculation.
Incident 6: Space Seed (S1E23) - Dinner with Khan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Space Seed a special dinner is put together to welcome Khan onto the Enterprise. We see that they are being served colored food cubes and celery sticks. Doctor McCoy walks into the dining room and comments about how the display is “very impressive”. However, this seems like a very unusual comment considering we are shown the only food we have ever seen consumed on the Enterprise. What exactly makes this food “impressive” as compared to other celery sticks and colored food cubes? Is there some way to tell this particular food is better that we don’t know about, but is obvious to everyone on the Enterprise?
There is also a chance that Doctor McCoy is just very easily impressed with food, and upon seeing any food spread he is likely to comment in wonder. Note the way Scotty is looking at McCoy. His face is a mixture of confusion, judgment, and pity. Perhaps Scotty is thinking to himself “bruh, it’s literally just colored food cubes chill out man,”. There is no explanation as to why Scotty is giving McCoy such a look, so this very well could be the case. Even though it is a silly explanation, I don’t think it should be ruled out that one of McCoy’s personality traits is being overly excited about food of any kind.
Incident 7: Journey to Babel (S2E10) Party food
Tumblr media
Much like in Space Seed, in this episode, we get to see a meal put together for a special occasion. All the diplomates are getting down at a mixer where a spread of food has been provided. These snacks seem very similar to colored food cubes, however I do think they differ. They may be the same type of food, but different in some way. In which case colored food cubes is an overarching category of food, and here we see two different types. The smaller more brightly colored cubes can be put in drinks, though if this is what you are supposed to do with them, or just the preference of that one alien species I do not know. Though I must point out, we have seen colored food cubes served in brown sauce in What are Little Girls Made Of? (S1E8) so it is not completely unheard of to have your colored food cubes served soggy.
Tumblr media
The other type of colored food cubes we see are a lot larger and more pair shaped (in reality, they probably were just skinned pairs dipped in food coloring, but for this essay, it’s important that we completely ignore the fact there is another life outside of Star Trek). Now to me, these are very interesting, because the dull color and apparent texture are a lit more similar to standard colored food cubes we have seen thus far. I would even go o far to say that this is the same exact food, just sans the cubed shape. So really, standard colored food cubes are just the cubed version of whatever this food is. This, again, is just speculation, but it does point us to the fact that colored food cubes are not naturally cubed (I’m going somewhere with this is promise)
Incident 8: The Trouble With Tribbles (S2E15) The trouble with Chicken sandwichs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we see Kirk attempting to order a chicken sandwich and coffee. What he gets instead is a plate full of tribbles,  hilarity ensues. I think this scene is interesting because we can add to our list of food items that are on the menu at the enterprise cafeteria: chicken sandwich. However, this is another food item we do not see. There is no way of knowing if the Enterprise's version of a chicken sandwich is what we would imagine a chicken sandwich to be. Much like the meatloaf and the soup, because we do not see it, there is no way of knowing if the food exists in the way that we as 21st-century people understand it. The events of TOS take place more than 200 years in our future, so to speculate that food could change a lot during that time isn’t a stretch. I don’t know, just some food for thought (lol)
Incident 9: By Any Other Name (S2E22) Living deliciously
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this episode, an alien taking the form of a human enjoys some colored food cubes. He makes a comment about how they are good they are while enthusiastically eating his food. This is a very important moment because it tells us that colored food cubes do taste good. In fact, they taste really good. Just before he eats, the alien comments on how humans could just take pills that give them all their nutrient needs and give up food completely (think the Jetsons cartoon). On the Enterprise, they do not eat just to live, but because they enjoy their food as well. This tells us that colored food cubes are at the very least, worth eating, and at the best, very delicious.
One more interesting thing: Spock is eating some kind of soup while everyone else enjoys colored food cubes. This could be a Vulcan preference, however, we know that Spock is vegetarian. This could be alluding to the fact that Colored Food Cubes are made out of meat.
Conclusion:
Yes, I asked a lot more questions than I answered. There are some things that make absolutely no sense to me, primarily, the food synthesizer and diet cards. Some evidence points to the fact that the food synthesizer can make practically anything (see Tomorrow is Yesterday, And the Children Shall Lead). However, one dietary card is equal to one specific food, which would mean they would have to produce a lot of these dietary cards if there is many meal options. How these cards are distributed, and what their limitations are, we do not know. And although we do not know the limits of what the food synthesizer can create, we do know these food have been served on the enterprise at least at one point:
-colored food cubes (variety)
-celery
-synthetic meatloaf
-synthetic turkey (Thanksgiving Special)
-Dietary Salad
-Milk
-Chicken Soup
-Chicken Sandwich
-Mystery Soup
-Ice cream (variety of flavors)
All of this food (except for maybe the dietary salad and celery) are synoptically created, so what they are actually made up of, I cannot say.
And finally, I would like to make a point about the colored food cubes. I think upon first inspection one would assume colored food cubes is a dish created specifically for space travel (think the food created for modern-day astronauts to consume in space). However, we learned that there is possibly a variety of colored food cube dishes. Since there is such a wide variety of food on the Enterprise, why would they also need to create a food specifically for space travel? I think that colored food cubes are actually a common dish, not intended specifically for space travel. Perhaps it was an alien food that got popular on earth, maybe it was a dish developed later in Earth's history by humans. I can only speculate, but I do think it is more than just boring space food. Everyone seems to have a preference for it, so I think it’s a dish you can eat over and over again and not get sick of. What colored food cubes taste like is completely up to speculation, but I would assume they are a savory food, considering we often see people enjoying them for their main meal.
I still have more to say, but for the sake of everyone, I’ll end it there. This was a lot of thought dumping, so if some of the things I said made no sense at all, I’m sorry. I’d love to hear some of your thoughts on TOS food! please share with me what you think colored food cubes would taste like :)

If he closes his eyes, he can hear Lake Biwa from his position on your porch and the soft sway of the water almost calms down the storm that’s been building in him since he boarded the train, since he nearly snapped his phone in half.

The sun was slowly making its way down the sky, eager to find rest behind the mountains, tinting the firmament indigo as stars began to blink awake. The temperature was also going down but sweat coated your skin and made your clothes stick to your body as you hiked up the mountain. Unsure of where you were even heading to, you ventured deeper into the woods in search for a safe place to spend the night. Unable to recall when your last meal was, your vision began to blur and you lost your footing for a second, slipping on a loose rock and ripping open your pants, the skin of your knee and palms scraped. Great, just what you needed. You wiped at the torn skin with the back of your sleeve, but there truly wasn’t much you could do. Darkness was creeping in closer, faster than you thought it would, and the sight of heavy clouds rolling in made your empty stomach clench with dread.
The sound was faint at first. And you stood in silence then, every muscle frozen. You hadn’t crossed paths with a bear yet or anything of the sort, but you knew there were countless dangers lurking in the shadows, and were well aware of your vulnerable state. Not tripping over your own two feet and splitting your head open so far had been a feat of its own, but an ever-present possibility nonetheless. Holding your breath for as long as you could, you trekked forward as silently as possible, slowly beginning to discern the rhythmic pattern of the sound. Not an animal, then.
Not far from where you were, the trees gave way to a clearing and you realized you were now on somebody’s private property. And that somebody was chopping wood.
You shuddered at the thought of a crazy man chasing you away with an axe, but you didn’t have many options here, not to mention you were running out of time. After drawing in one deep, fortifying breath, you cautiously made your way over. The rustling of leaves and crunching branches beneath your feet gave you away, apparently, because the figure suddenly stood still. Your fingers grazed over the rough bark of the tree in front of you, and you peeked around it.
Just a few feet away from you, stood a tall man. Huge, really. Your eyesight wasn’t your most reliable sense right then, but he looked strong. And alone. Truly, you weren’t sure either of those things were good or bad, but your body was too weak to hold you up any longer and you feared you might pass out right there on the treeline.
Holding up both hands in what you hoped was an appeasing gesture, you moved forward as slowly as you could. He remained rooted to the ground, right next to the stump he used as a chopping block, his hand wrapped loosely around his axe by the handle.
“No trouble…” you croaked out in a heavily-accented voice, as you took a trembling step forward. “Not looking for trouble,” you attempted to clarify.
That seemed to amuse him, as he snorted a bit. You didn’t look like you could cause much trouble, even if you wanted to. You looked like you’d been through hell and had barely made it out. If you felt like shit, the way his face contorted into a deep frown when you stepped into the light made it clear you looked even worse. With a soft thump, he lodged the axe on the stump and made his way over to you. You cringed instantly, stumbling back a few steps when he got too close.
“You alone?” His voice was deep and rich, but he quickly glanced around to check along the treeline for good measure. You nodded, but the motion sent your head spinning and you stumbled a bit.
“I just need somewhere to be tonight. I think a storm is coming,” you murmured, the lilt of your voice barely audible at such volume. A couple of warm hands reached forward to grab you by the upper arms, steadying you. He half expected you to bolt, but you surprised him by slumping in his grip. With a low sigh, he led one of your arms to wrap around his shoulders as he held up most of your weight while walking you up the front steps of his cabin.
Once inside, he placed you on a loveseat by the fireplace. There was no fire burning, but you felt much warmer indoors. He grabbed the blanket draped over the back of the seat and laid it over you. You frowned in confusion by his kindness, but decided it was probably in your best interest to keep your mouth shut for a while. As he stood this close, tucking the fabric around your shoulders and feet until you felt like a blanket burrito, you finally got a chance to look at him. Like, really look at him.
Boy, was he beautiful.
He looked like he’d had a long day, too. His eyes were tired, but kind, and impossibly blue. His long blond hair was messy but tied at the back of his neck in a low ponytail. You faintly wondered if he’d been sculpted by gods, because that bone structure was to die for. If you had had even one ounce of energy left in your body, you probably would’ve used it to touch his cheek to make sure he was real. His beard was thick and suited him well, and you wondered if it felt as soft as it looked. His lips were full and plump, and they were… moving?
Oh. He was speaking to you.
“... in a while. I can heat up some soup for you, if you want.”
You blinked a couple times as you forced your eyesight to focus. The man let out a quiet sigh and gave your shoulder a gentle pat.
“Stay here, I’ll be right back.”
So you did. All bundled up and warm, you battled yourself to maintain your eyes open as he headed to the kitchen. For soup, you reminded yourself. For you. That was the moment your stomach decided to growl embarrassingly loudly, and you sunk deeper into the soft, worn leather of the sofa.
A gentle shake on your shoulder awakened you, and you jolted a bit in surprise.
“Hey, it’s okay! It’s okay, you dozed off for a bit. Why don’t you eat this? It’ll make you feel better.” He then placed a large bowl of hot soup on your lap and you wrapped both hands around it. Your eyes were impossibly round and doe like, and your host had to force himself to look away.
“Thank you, er… uh…”
“Thor,” he offered as he lowered himself to sit on the edge of the coffee table across from you. “My name’s Thor.”
“Thor,” you repeated softly, savouring the foreign word in your tongue. He swallowed hard. You offered your own name in return. “Thank you, Thor.”
He hummed in response and rose to his feet to kneel in front of the fireplace to set up some wood in it and get it going. The flames took on quickly and you let out a quiet sigh of relief. Thor glanced at you over his shoulder, and found you raising the bowl to your lips to gulp down the broth eagerly. A smile tugged on the corner of his mouth, but he quickly rose to his feet and walked away.
It wasn’t often that Thor had visitors. He had never had any, to be honest. Ever since he’d come back to Earth after wandering the universe senselessly, he’d been on his own. Up there, he longed for home. But home no longer existed, not to him anyway. Everybody he had ever considered to be home was gone now, so he’d decided to build one for himself out here. It got lonely sometimes, but it was peaceful, and that was much more than he thought himself worthy of.
Inside his bedroom, he rummaged through his things to find a few pieces of clothing you could wear and set them on the foot of his bed. Next, he went into the bathroom and drew you a bath with the hottest water he could offer, and threw in some bubbles for good measure. He’d always loved a good bubble bath, and you looked like you could keep a secret.
With everything set up for you to clean up, he made his way back to the living room to find you laying on your side on the floor in front of the fire. You were curled up in a little cocoon under the blanket he’d given you, and you were lazily watching the flames dance over burning wood, your eyelids getting heavier by the second. Thor bit the inside of his cheek and went to kneel next to you, one broad hand coming to rest on your shoulder.
“I prepared a bath for you. There are also some clothes on the bed you can wear. Just leave your dirty ones in the bathroom and I’ll take care of it, yeah?”
You rolled onto your back and gazed up at him, brows knit together in confusion. “You really don’t have to do all this. I can just stay here and leave when the sun comes up.”
“Nonsense,” he replied with a shake of his head. He rose to his feet and held out a hand for you to take, hauling you up onto your feet and grimacing apologetically when you winced in pain. Your hand felt minuscule engulfed by his, but you relished the warmth as he led you through his home and to the bathroom. Against the far wall, was a beautiful wood bathtub and you gave in to the impulse to brush your fingertips along its smooth side before dipping them in the hot water. A wide smile spread on your face. It had been longer than you’d like to admit since you’d had a proper bath, even longer one with warm water. You turned to face your host to thank him, but the sheer emotion in your glazed-over eyes nearly knocked him off his feet.
Thor cleared his throat and walked over to hand you a washcloth and a bar of soap, but your free hand came up to trap both his ridiculously large hands between yours.
“You… you don’t have to go,” you whispered, gaze fixed on your joint hands.
Thor flushed red in an instant. He pulled both hands back like he’d been burned by you, and rubbed his sweaty palms on the front of his worn jeans. The hurt in your expression made him want to punch himself. He opened his mouth to speak, only to clamp it shut when he was unable to come up with a proper response.
You merely gave him a half smile and took a step back, closer to the tub. Without releasing his gaze, you toed off your boots and pulled your hoodie over your head. He swallowed tightly, and his pupils dilated. His eyes were dark now, a thin ring of stormy blue where there had been sparkling sea glass before. You weren’t sure what had come over you, you weren’t usually this bold, but the whole thing seemed surreal and it had been far too long since you’d felt warm and cared for. He was a ridiculously attractive man and you knew a longing stare when you saw one. Even if it was just for a moment, you both seemed like you could use the company.
Nimble fingers pulled your pants open before pushing them down your legs and stepping out of them. Your knee was scraped and bruised, but Thor could hardly focus on that when you were slowly exposing miles and miles of soft skin. You wore nothing under your long-sleeved shirt, and a pained sound ripped through him at the sight. Your velvet skin was littered with small cuts and bruises, some around the base of your throat and what he could’ve sworn were fingerprints around your arms, causing him to frown deeply. You were covered in grime and dry blood, and he felt his hands twitch into fists at his sides. He had no idea who you were or where you’d come from, but he’d known the second he laid eyes on you that you had nowhere else to go. It was a feeling he knew all too well by now. He didn’t have much to offer, he was merely the broken shell of the man he used to be; but somebody had hurt you, and you stumbled into his life because fate willed it so. He was no King, no god, no warrior. Not anymore. But you seeked no king, no riches… you seeked solace. And he felt you deep inside his soul.
Unaware of his own movements, Thor found himself standing right in front of you, hands hovering the curve of your hip bones. Yours lead them to touch you, the tips of his fingers hooking into the soft fabric of your undergarments before pulling them down your thighs and letting them fall to the ground by your feet. Despite his form towering over you, you did not feel intimidated. You felt confident and desirable, powerful even. You called the shots here, you had him wrapped around your finger, and he looked more than ready to drop to his knees to worship you.
Thor vaguely wondered if you were real at all, or if perhaps this was some fantasy his mind had created to chase away the coldness of solitude. He lifted one hand to ghost over the side of your face, and you leaned gratefully into the touch. The rough pad of his finger grazed over the apple of your cheek, down the slope of your nose and over the shape of your plush mouth. You puckered up your lips to press a soft kiss to his thumb, the tip of your tongue peeking out after to taste the salty skin. His jaw clenched and his grip tightened, said thumb pushing past your lips and into your scorching hot mouth. You opened wide for him, eyes fluttering closed, now standing on the tips of your bare toes and leaning into him as you swayed in your spot. His free hand came to rest on the small of your back, steadying you, pressing you forward against him while he watched, entranced, the way your warm wet tongue swirled around his finger. Thor withdrew his hand enough to make your lips release him with a soft pop, and he dragged the digit across your lips, wetting them with your saliva. You licked your lips together and leaned forward, blindly chasing after his touch, only to meet his mouth with your own.
The sound you made was angelic, and he was certain he couldn’t have made you up. Not you, not this perfect, not this warm. Both your arms slid up to drape over his broad shoulders, and he bent down to kiss you deeply, slowly, unwilling to let a single inch of you untouched. Carefully, he led you to take a couple steps backwards until the back of your knees hit the edge of the tub.
“Get in,” he commanded gruffly.
You felt his voice right in your core.
Lip caught between pearly whites, you kept your gaze trained on him as you carefully stepped inside the bathtub. A soft sigh escaped you then, and you let your head fall back, soaking your hair in the warm water. Thor quickly discarded his clothes, kicking them off to the side before climbing inside behind you. You pouted for a second, sulking for missing your chance to admire him in all his nudity for he’d moved in a blur. The sentiment was shortfelt, though, when he pulled you to lean back against him, his broad torso surrounding you as he encased you in his arms. He stretched comfortably, the entire tub clearly customized to fit his large form.
One wide palm lay flat on your belly, pressing you back against him until you sat on his thighs, and you swallowed a moan when you felt him settle comfortably between your cheeks. You rolled your hips back experimentally and his breathing hitched. A wicked smile curling your lips, you peered back at him through your lashes as you repeated the motion. Thor growled softly and pinched the inside of your thigh, making you squeal and attempt to squirm away. The palm on your stomach held you still while his mouth ran from the top of your shoulder, along the curve where it met your neck, and up to nibble at the shell of your ear. He then reached over to grab the bar of soap and lathered up the washcloth to begin washing you.
He rubbed your tender skin carefully until you were clean from head to toes. He’d even delved between your legs to wash you there, but his touch was much too gentle to appease your burning need. Soft mouth sounds came from him, soothing you into relaxation as he took care of you in ways you never dared imagine. Nobody in your life had touched you with such gentleness and patience, and when he started washing your hair, carefully running his fingers through your locks to detangle them, you lost it.
Crystal tears rolled down your flushed cheeks and you squeezed your eyes shut. Thor made no comment about it, and instead just kept on humming softly while massaging your scalp. After he rinsed your hair out, you wiped away at your face before carefully turning in his arms to straddle him, this time his length coming to nestle between your lower lips, and you couldn’t help grinding down on him, gliding your core along his shaft from root to tip. This time, he made no move to stop you, both his hands coming down to grab your backside tightly.
You nearly gave in, the blunt head of his cock resting right against your entrance, merely a hair’s breadth away from slipping inside you. But you were not done with him, not yet. So you scooted back to sit on his upper thighs again and grabbed the washcloth from the edge of the tub to lather it up with soap and begin repaying him in kind for his gentle treatment.
Thor couldn’t quite remember the last time he’d been with a woman, and he felt giddy and excited like a young lad. Not that it mattered really. No other woman mattered when he had you right there, in his arms: real, tangible, his. Perhaps only for a second, but his nonetheless. He captured your mouth in a searing kiss, and it took a ridiculous amount of sheer willpower to break apart from his scrumptious mouth.
“Don’t distract me, I’m not done,” you mumbled between stolen kisses. Thor gave your ass a rough squeeze and you yelped softly.
“Do hurry up then, little one. Water’s running cold.”
-
After turning on the heater in his room, Thor walked out to lock up for the night. Seemingly unfazed by the cold weather, he strolled around the cabin barefoot, his nudity barely concealed by the towel  perched precariously low on his hips. You followed him around like a lost puppy, wrapped up in the bathrobe he’d lent you, the length of it nearly dragging against the floor. Once he made sure all the doors and windows were locked, he approached the fireplace to put it out but you rapidly protested.
“You don’t have to do that! I- I meant what I said earlier. I can stay right here and leave first thing in the morning. You’ve already done so much for me.”
Your words put a furrow between his brows so he went to stand right in front of you. With two fingers tucked under your chin, he tilted up your head to gaze directly into your eyes. His voice was low, and you struggled not to look away, his grip on you tightening when you tried to. “Is that what you want?”
You shuffled your feet nervously and chewed on your lip, a nervous habit you hadn’t been able to quit. “You’ve been so kind to me, a total stranger, and I-'' Your mouth clamped shut when he grunted in protest, his frown deepening.
“That’s not what I asked. Tell me, is that what you’d prefer?”
Struggling to word a proper response, you merely opened and shut your mouth like a gaping fish. His gaze flickered down to your lips, but his own were set in a stern line. You shook your head no. He rose one thick eyebrow questioningly. You swallowed the lump in your throat and straightened your spine.
“No. I’d rather be with you.”
Thor hummed lowly in response, clearly pleased. Bending down slightly, he gave you a quick, chaste kiss before turning back and walking away to put out the fire. You merely stood there, waiting for him to finish while you rubbed your cold feet together and toyed with the long sleeves of the thick robe. Once he considered everything to be in order, he approached you again and took your hand in his to lead you back into his bedroom, shutting the door behind you.
“Aren’t you cold?” you asked timidly, inching closer to him to slide both arms around his tapered waist from behind. Your cold nose pressed against the space between his shoulder blades, lips ghosting over his freckled skin. He shuddered, but it wasn’t because he was cold. He was surprisingly warm, and when he slowly spun in your embrace to face you, your cheek went to rest against his broad chest, gently rubbing against the light dusting of hair there.
The air in the bedroom was thick and warm thanks to the heater, and you could feel your muscles loosen as warmth seeped into them. After shaking his head in response to your question, he brought up one of those ridiculously large hands of his to cradle the back of your head as he leaned down to brush a kiss against the crown of your head. “Come, I’m sure you’re exhausted.”
You really were, but your blood was boiling and your skin was buzzing, and sleep couldn’t be farther from your mind. You stepped back and closer to the bed, your fingertips trailing down his torso to give his towel a gentle tug. Thor merely watched you, curiosity and desire dancing in his heated gaze. Despite his body’s pleas, he didn’t budge. You huffed out a low breath and gave the fabric another tug, more insistent, and he took one step forward, the tail of the towel tucked against his skin coming loose. If you moved your hand back, it would fall to the ground, and god, you really wished he’d make this easier on you. He wanted you and you knew that. You saw it in the ferocity of his eyes, in the flaring of his nostrils, in the clench of his jaw. Hell, you could even see it through the stupid towel he made no effort to get rid of.
A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth as he watched you grow impatient, but he’d be lying if he denied you made all his blood pool in his groin, his head dizzy and oxygen-deprived. He was dying to run his hands all over your body, over your impossibly soft skin, over every dip and curve of your silhouette, he wanted to kiss and taste you, and discover every beautiful sound he could coax out of you… But what he wanted didn’t matter now. Thor was aware you were a tough one, he’d known it the second he saw you, but you could still be fragile in many ways he didn’t quite know yet. If this was going to happen, it would have to happen on your terms. Because you willed it so. Because you wanted him.
One small fist still clutched the fabric against his body while your free hand reached out to grab his and place it over the knot keeping your robe together. He instinctively gave the small bow a single yank and both sides of the robe fell open. Thor drew in a deep breath and, unable to hold himself back any longer, he slid one hand over your bare stomach and around your circumference, fingertips digging into the small of your back to tug you forward. In that instant you let go of his towel and let it fall to the floor in a heap. A loud whine escaped you at the sight, and you fell to your knees.
He was instantly reaching to hoist you up, but you were already pressing your face against his muscled thigh, nuzzling the coarse hair coating it and inhaling deeply his scent. He smelled like musk and pine trees, like freshly turned ground and a brewing storm. You whimpered and pressed your face against the soft spot between his inner thigh and his hip before licking up a broad stripe there. Thor’s knees buckled, but his hands instinctively went to run through your soft hair and massage your scalp. His erection stood proudly, thick and hard as steel. You mouthed softly at the entire length, your pink tongue peeking out to kitten lick his soft skin. The fingers in your hair tightened their grip as you leisurely made your way to the tip, pressing a kiss to it before opening your mouth wide and welcoming him in.
It was unlike you, to drop to your knees for a man. Particularly one you virtually knew nothing about. But it was like your body acted on its own around him, abandoning all sense of shame or even self-preservation, driven by something deeper, wilder inside you that had laid dormant until now. He tasted both tart and sweet, and you let go of your inhibitions as you devoured him like a woman starved. His sighs and low grunts only fueled your desire, egging you on to bob your head and swallow around mouthfuls of him.
Too long. It truly had been way too long, and Thor was clinging to whatever remnants of his sanity were left when you worked him like you knew exactly what he needed. It was difficult enough to not let go the second you took him in your mouth and coat your throat with his hot spend. Unable to hold it together any longer, Thor carefully pulled you away despite his own protests, an obscene whine escaping him at the crude sight of his cock slipping out of your mouth, slick with spit and desire. He entertained the thought of shoving himself back down your throat for a split second, but the better part of him knew he needed to be inside you right then or else he would combust.
Somehow managing to keep his touch gentle, he all but shoved you back onto the bed while peeling the offending robe off your frame. You were truly exquisite. His lips latched onto your sensitive neck to lick and nibble its tender skin until faint bruises bloomed from within, hellbent on replacing the marks on your body with ones you wouldn’t recoil from when you looked at yourself in the mirror (he hoped so, at least). Repeating the motions, Thor slowly made his way down your body, refusing to neglect a single inch, to kiss and lick and suck, staking his claim over you.
You were a writhing mess beneath him, sweaty hands reaching out to hold onto him, caressing and clutching onto his shoulders, the blunt edges of your fingertips leaving crescent-shaped dents in the vast field of tan skin. “Kiss me, please,” you pleaded breathlessly, attempting to wiggle in his grasp enough to capture his mouth in yours.
Thor obliged happily. One warm hand cupped your cheek as he kissed you deep and slow, while the other reached to grab a pillow to place under your hips, propping you up at the right angle for him to slide right inside you. At first, you feared the intrusion to be too much to handle. Your lower half grew stiff as concrete but he laid his free hand on your belly, holding you in place when the rocking motion of his hips began. Despite the fire burning violently within him, Thor’s body moved in controlled, smooth waves, easing himself deeper into you, inch by inch. The tension in your muscles slowly evaporated as pleasure came to reign, the sounds emanating from you going from shaky intakes of breath to quiet whimpers and soft moans.
His thrusts were slow and shallow at first but your body soon grew hungry for more, aching to soothe the hollow pain of places so intimate you’d forgotten about.
“Thor,” you whispered breathlessly against his moving mouth. He hummed lowly in acknowledgement though he refused to break the deep kiss you shared. “Thor… please, más,” you pleaded.
Propping himself up on one elbow, he pulled back enough to look down at your flushed face. A small crease formed on his forehead out of confusion, unable to recall the meaning of such word. Your hands currently clawing at his hip bones were more straightforward. You were tugging on him, urging his body closer between your legs, deeper inside you. With one particularly deep thrust, he bottomed out and released a deep, animalistic growl in stark contrast to the loud cry of pleasure you let out.
“Más, más! Sigue, sigue así, por favor… oh dios, no pares – Thor! T-Thor!”
Thor’s chest swelled with pride when realization dawned on him. You were so out of your mind with pleasure, your brain had regressed into your native tongue as you begged him to keep on. Your back bowed off the bed, hips propped up by the pillow as you moved your body in tandem with his, meeting him halfway in every rock of his hips. His forearm slid under the back of your knee and lifted your leg higher, your knee brushing your side while he made the most of the new angle, shoving himself deep inside you. Your cries of pleasure were obscene, loud and shameless, and Thor relished every single one. He kissed you deep and hard, swallowing your moans and muffling his own while the slapping of skin against skin and wet squelching sound of your coupling reverberated through the room.
Unable to concentrate enough to continue kissing him, you merely lost yourself in his hot, dark gaze while both your hands clutched handfuls of his long, slightly damp hair. Your jaw quivered and your eyes rolled back in your head out of sheer pleasure, and Thor was certain he’d died and gone to Valhalla. You were definitely the most sublime creature he’d ever laid eyes upon, and to see you come undone beneath him in such fashion, nearly threw him over the edge. Strong-willed as he was, he refused to find his own release until he’d satisfied you thoroughly, so the calloused pad of his thumb travelled south to catch the bundle of nerves hidden between your slick folds. Your sex was tender and puffy, your clit swollen and firm like a pearl. He drew small circles on your skin then, despite your protests and attempts to ease on the overstimulation currently making your brain short-circuit. One after the other, Thor coaxed the most delicious, toe-curling orgasms out of you until you were weeping, hot streaks of tears running down your burning cheeks. With one final deep push, he found his own release, grunting through it against your throat.
You were a sweaty, trembling mess. Utterly exhausted as you were, you struggled to keep your eyes open despite the blissed out expression on your face. Taking pity on you, Thor carefully dislodged himself from you and rolled to the side to lay beside your frame. Your body curled against his side instinctively, seeking his warmth as you snuggled into a little ball beneath his arm. Thor was unable to suppress a smile as he watched you get comfortable.
He disliked denying you of your much needed sleep, but his need to provide for you was far greater. After soundlessly slipping out of bed for a quick trip to the kitchen, he nudged you awake as he brought a glass of water to your lips.
“Drink up, little one,” he cooed lowly. You blinked heavily up at him for a moment before gratefully gulping down the cool liquid, soothing the dry aching of your now-sore throat. Downing the rest of it himself, he reached over to set the empty glass on his bedside table and fetch a piece of sliced apple to offer you.
Thick fingers pressed the small piece of fruit to your lips, and you parted them obediently. It was crisp and juicy, and your sensitive tummy rumbled gratefully. Although confused by and unaccustomed to his caregiving, you basked in it. It was a brand new yet wholly pleasant experience, to say the least.
Once you’d finished your food, Thor pulled up his thick bedding to cover both your bodies, his wrapping protectively around yours. With his bare chest pressed to your back, he nuzzled his face into your hair and bent his legs to tuck them under your bum. After scooting back to mold your body against his and leading his muscled arms to embrace you, you both quickly fell into deep slumber.
For the first time in a long time, nightmares were nowhere to be found.
The following morning, you woke up warm and relaxed. Your body ached a bit, but each pang of pain sent an electric shock right to your core. For the first time, your aches were born out of passion and pleasure. Waking up to a heavy body draped over you and ocean-blue eyes watching you intently did catch you off guard at first, panic threatening to seep deep into your bones. Thor was quick to chase away the darkness creeping on the corners of your mind (and his) when he kissed you, and proceeded to claim your body again. It was slow and lazy, and everything you never knew you needed.
After breakfast, you sat on the loveseat by the fireplace with a steaming mug cradled between your hands, curiously studying your surroundings. The sound of the front door opening broke you out of your reverie, and you peeked from the back of the seat to watch Thor toeing off his heavy boots and hanging his coat near the entrance. The second his gaze landed on you, a heartfelt smile crept on his lips. You took a tentative sip from your beverage to conceal your own, attentive eyes following his every movement as he made his way over to pour himself a cup and join you on the sofa. Large hands crept under the blanket draped over your legs to grasp your ankles and lead them to rest over his knee while he sat back against the armrest, facing you.
“So,” he spoke calmly, piercing blue eyes boring into yours. “What’s your story?”

The Recs (Less Travelled)
I’m excited to bring you the first installment of my ‘roads less travelled’ recs! I will be doing another round of this, probably once the Ted Lasso fic tag hits about 25 pages, and then I’ll also grab a couple more fandoms to collect in there!
The Rules:
Each fandom/pairing was sorted on Archive of Our Own by completed works. Anything recced here was not in the first ten pages when sorted by kudos at the time of reccing. There may be some more well-known authors on this list, but the specific fics I’ve picked are ones that didn’t crack that top ten or just didn’t get much traction and I think deserve it, so hopefully I have also balanced it out with other under the radar (and still great!) works. As ever, I have a pinned post of my other recs (none have been duplicated from there), so you can also check those out! Under the cut you’ll find 10 recs in each fandom for:

Through the Night - Criminal Minds Imagine
Pairing: Hotch x reader
Warning: language, intense torture, inflicted pain, violence, anxiety,
Word count: 2,300
Imagine being taken by an unsub and Hotch finding you and not wanting to leave your side.
Tumblr media
You weren’t really sure if you were conscious or not. The lack of sight and sound made you believe not, but the intense pain coursing through your body told you otherwise. Your thoughts were fuzzy, making it hard to think. You tried several times to get up but something was holding you down. And you could easily feel the gag in your mouth, preventing you from making any sound.
Nothing. Nothing happened for a long time. The inability to use most of your senses was preventing you from figuring out anything about where you were. After experiencing intense feelings of anger, fear, and frustration, all you felt now was tired.
You may have fallen asleep because you were jerked out of your sensory deprivation by a sudden light. Pain erupted in your head and you blinked your eyes closed at the searing, white intensity.
A hand hit your face, hard. “Open your damn eyes.” The voice was deep and gravelly.
You forced your eyes open and you took in the man before you. It was definitely the unsub of the case you and the team were working. His brown eyes, unfocused and crazed, were studying you. His black hair was unkempt and he was sporting a beard, albeit one only a few days old. He smiled at you, a wild gleam in his eyes as he removed your gag.
“Tell me about your team.” He demanded forcibly. You remained silent, refusing to share anything about those you considered your family. He slapped you again, causing your head to spin and fog up your thoughts. You clenched your jaw tight and said nothing. You were going to suppress the pain for as long as possible, to keep from giving the unsub the satisfaction of hearing you scream.
“Okay, if that is how you want to play it. I sure have a few tools I have been wanting to try out.” He disappeared out of sight. You used that moment to try and remember what happened and if your team knew where you were. Try as you may, you couldn’t recall much of anything.
The unsub, whose name was John or James or something fairly similar, strolled easily back into the room, carrying a large toolbox with him. You squeeze your eyes shut, not wanting to watch as he pulled out the tool that would undoubtedly inflict a lot of pain on you.
“Last chance missy. You could save yourself a lot of pain.” He said sadistically.
You opened your mouth as if to speak, waiting for him to lean in before spitting in his face. His features were quickly marred as signs of intense anger overtook his face.
He grabbed a pair of needle-nose pliers, moving quickly towards your hand. You tightened your hand up in a fist but swiftly relaxed it as he slammed the pliers down on your hand. You closed your eyes and turned your head away. A horrific, burning pain exploded from your fingers. You didn’t have to see what he was doing to know he was violently removing your fingernails. It wasn’t long before you were screaming out in pain.
He didn’t stop there though. He replaced his pliers with a new tool, one you quickly learned was a hammer, and turned his attention to your other hand. He put the time in making sure that each of your fingers was broken before bringing the hammer down hard on the back of your hand.
You passed out from the pain shortly after that, drifting in and out of consciousness. Sometimes he would bring you back with a bucket of cold water thrown in your face and others he would leave you be. Each time he demanded the same thing, “Tell me about your team.” You never said a word, the only vocalization you made were the screams of agony and whimpers of pain.
You couldn’t guess how long you had been there, tied to a chair, but you knew it wouldn’t be much longer. Either the team would find you or you would die, simple as that.
You didn’t have much left in you to fight and the only thing keeping you from giving up was the fact that you never told Aaron how you felt about him. After years of loving him silently, you had been ready to tell him. And you didn’t want to go, not knowing if there had been a future for the two of you.
A commotion sounded upstairs, followed quickly by a gunshot. Fear took hold and you tried desperately to free yourself of the gag in your mouth, the one the unsub replaced every time he finished with you. You were unsuccessful in your attempts to remove it and knew that all you could do was wait.
Heavy black boots appeared on the steps, followed quickly by a pair of jean-clad legs, a muscular torso, and finally a face. You cried out, as best you could, in relief and exhaustion when you saw it was Morgan. He was followed by Reid and Rossi. Morgan continued to clear the room, a basement of some sort, as Reid and Rossi moved straight towards you. You relaxed just knowing it was them.
They quickly removed the gag and restraints; the entire time Reid spoke softly to you. Morgan, who had moved over to you, must have sensed your fatigue and pain because he gently said “Baby girl, I’m gonna pick you up” before slowly sweeping you into his arms. Pain exploded from many different places in your body and you were unable to suppress a cry.
You don’t remember much after that. A short moment in the ambulance of a familiar face leaning towards you, whispering sweet nothings in your ear, a brief flash of being surrounded by doctors in a bright room, and then darkness.
The darkness was soothing, gentle, and quiet. You were comfortable staying there for a long time. It was only when a nagging sound and returning feelings in your body overtook the sweet darkness that you realized you were indeed alive. Several times you had been aware of your surroundings, of JJ talking rapidly on the phone, of Reid reading out loud, of Morgan chattering loudly, of Garcia telling you all about her day, but most importantly of Aaron talking, telling you about little, unimportant things and about how sorry he was.
Finally, after what felt like ages, you were able to pull yourself away from the darkness. It was quiet and the only thing you felt was someone holding your hand. You opened your eyes and was greeted with semi-darkness. You turned slightly to the right and noticed Aaron was holding your hand. He was leaning back in one of the hospital chairs, legs sprawled out in front of him and head resting in a very uncomfortable looking position.
“Aaron?” You croaked, unsure if he was asleep or not. Not a second after you had pathetically uttered his name, was he up and leaning towards you.
His face lit up with a smile, seeing you were awake. He grabbed a cup that had been sitting beside the bed and helped you hold the cup as you greedily drank the water.
“How’s your pain?” Aaron asked after you had settled back down into the pillows.
“I’ve definitely felt better, that’s for sure.” You whispered, already tired from the effort it had taken to get a drink.
Aaron immediately pressed the call button and a nurse ran in, checking your IV and administering some pain meds before flitting back out of the room. Soon you were pulled back into your drugged darkness.
Days passed in a similar fashion. Most of the time Aaron was at your side. There were a few times that Morgan or Rossi had been beside you when you had awakened. Eventually, you found out the extent of your injuries, but not from Aaron. He had refused to tell you anything about the unsub that had taken you or what they could piece together about what happened.
You learned that you had some brain swelling, bad enough that it required surgery. One of your hand was so badly broken that it needed reconstructive surgery once the swelling receded, you had a few broken ribs and there were even a few burns littering your body. Aside from these injuries, your body was also covered in bruises and welts.
You had trouble sleeping, which led to Aaron spending many a night in the uncomfortable hospital chair, gripping your hand and talking to you. There were even times when you just laid in the hospital bed, listening to Aaron talk.
It was a month before the hospital felt that you were well enough to leave, but they strongly suggested you stay with someone for another month at least. This bit of information threw you for a loop because you were alone in DC. Both your parents had passed years ago and the only living relative you knew of, an aunt in California, was in a retirement facility.
Each one of the team members jumped at the chance to stay with you. Penelope was thrilled at the idea of having a month-long sleepover, Reid wanted to “educate you” in the ways of Star Trek and classic literature, Rossi wanted to use you a guinea pig for his recipes, and Morgan wanted someone who would jam to his beats, and maybe even play a video game or two with him. Seeing how excited the team was to be there for you made your heart squeeze painfully at the thought of how close you had gotten to losing them.
You couldn’t say no to any of them and was ready to just suggest a rotating schedule when Aaron spoke up. “She is staying with me.” He said it with such finality that no one questioned him. You had looked at him questioningly but hadn’t argued.
It was less than an hour later that you found yourself staring at the front door to Aaron’s apartment.
“Are you sure you want me in your space? I mean, I’m sure Penelope would be fine with staying over.” You really doubted that Aaron would feel comfortable with you in his private space. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” He replied, staring deep into your Y/E/C eyes. You felt a blush bloom on your face, and had glanced down at your feet in embarrassment.
A hand tilted your face up again. “Really Y/N. I want you here.” He spoke softly, a thumb gently moving back and forth along your jaw.
The door flew open, and Aaron jerked his hand away from your face. Jack stood in front of you both, beaming up at you.
“Hi Y/N. I’m so excited you are here. Want to come to see my legos?” His brimming excitement pulled a laugh from your chest. You walked with Jack to his room, letting him tell you all about his legos.
The rest of the day passed swiftly after that. Aaron had shown you to his guest room and had helped you put away some of your things. You hadn’t worried about sleep until you had gone to your bedroom for the evening.
Once you were alone, laying on your bed, you felt crushing anxiety grip your chest. You had left the lamp on alongside your bed but was freaked out enough to carry a blanket and pillow away from the bed, which was alongside the window, to the other side of the room. You couldn’t remember much of what happened, for that you were grateful, but being alone since leaving the hospital had become something you dreaded. You knew Aaron would help you if you asked but he had already been with you through so much, giving up much of his time to be with you. You tried to get comfortable and even fell into a fitful sleep. You were awoken a while later to hand on your shoulder, to which you screamed and kicked forward repeatedly.
Aaron’s soothing voice reached your ears. “Hey, hey. It’s just me, Aaron. You’re okay Y/N. You’re okay.” You took a deep breath, your wide eyes finding Aaron’s. A whimper escaped your lips and Aaron was pulling you into a hug. You let go, crying into his shoulder as he whispered into your ear.
After a while you managed to calm down, taking a deep breath and leaning back from Aaron’s chest. “I’m sorry.” You murmured, your gaze now on your lap. Aaron gently guided your face until you were looking at him again.
“You have nothing to be sorry for.” He whispered. “I came in here because you sounded upset like you were having a nightmare.” “Aaron, I…” You paused trying to find the words, looking deep into his warm brown eyes. “I want to thank you for everything you have done for me.” He started to speak but you placed a soft finger over his lips.
“I don’t remember much about what happened, but I do remember that the only thing that kept me going, when I felt like giving up, was knowing that I needed to come back to you. I needed to tell you… I needed to tell you that I love you.” You had somehow found the courage to tell him the secret you had been keeping for months, years even.
You watched as shock crossed his face, and then happiness take over. He pulled you close again, pressing a kiss to your hair. “I love you too Y/N. I love you too.”
You knew you had a long way to go before you ever felt normal again, but knowing that Aaron would be by your side through it all made you believe you could do it.

“Some Risks are worth the Reward”
Music fuels the mind and thus fuels creativity. A creative mind has the ability to make discoveries and create innovations. The greatest minds and thinkers like Hildegard von Bingen, Barbra Strozzi, and Florence Mary Taylor all had something in common in that they were constantly exploring their imagination and creativity. As a Lumberjane it will be vital that we not only enrich our minds, but enrich those around us. Music is just one of the many mediums that can create an empowering environment, it is one of the few mediums that can be enjoyed at any time.

Finch’s Notes Cont:
Hi! I made this post to avoid work. But mostly I made this post because Lumberjanes is something really important to me, and these playlist are a part of my enjoyment of Lumberjanes I don’t see people talking about a lot! So I decided to make a post in order to share them with y’all. I remember hunching over my phone making a spotify playlist (here, though it’s missing a few songs that aren’t on spotify) while on a trip to California in the summer of 2018 when I first got into Lumberjanes. I probably listened to these songs while I made my first ever Lumberjanes fanart. These mixes helped me to discover artist I really love, like Janelle Monae and Mal Blum. I hope you enjoy them as well!
Other notes: Sk8r Boi is crossed out as that is the way it appears on Mal’s playlist. Also, I tend to shy away from music videos as a personal preference, so that’s why there are so few included on this playlist, though I’m sure many of these songs have beautiful music videos. I might reblog this post in the future with some youtube playlists of these mixes, but if you want to find them yourself there are a lot of playlists of these songs made on youtube already! Or you can make your own playlists using this post.
And, just for fun, have one final Lumberjanes themed music recommendation:

Fic Writer Interview
Tagged by @trulycertain
I've never done one of these before, so be kind... snerks
Name: EridaniDreams ("Dreams of what?" "All sorts of things!")
Fandoms (that I write for): Deus Ex (Jensen era). Some Mass Effect. Star Trek, waaaaay back in the day.
Two-Shot: Probably Improvise, Adapt, Overcome, a bit of Aria/Adam romantic fluff. Second chapter's still in progress, but I do work on it when the muse hits me.
Most popular multi-chapter: My only multi-chapter (at the moment, until Mass Effect: Human Resolution goes online, that is... watch this space for developments!) is The Odysseus Gambit. Set before, during, and after Mankind Divided, it's a cyberpunk thriller/romance, the spawn of a couple of what-ifs that hit me like a juggernaut and demanded to be written. Currently at five chapters posted, eight chapters written. Chapter revisions are being posted weekly on AO3 as of last week, and final betas here on Tumblr as I write them.
Actual worst part of writing: Keeping track of all the little details. I used to get annoyed as a reader when I'd be reading the second book in the fourth trilogy in a world the writer had been working in for about a decade, and the writer got some little thing wrong that I, of course, remembered, having read the previous book in the past several weeks, and I'd think, "How hard is it to keep a bible?" Yeah. I don't think that anymore. I have a bible (thank you, Trello!) and it still isn't enough, I'm often referring back to previous chapters to make sure what I refer to in chapter 23 really did happen that way in chapter 6. And my sincere apologies to all the writers I mentally slandered along the way.
Actual worst part of writing, part II: My husband, coming along and randomly saying "WAT" while bugging his eyes out to resemble actual googly eyes. Yes, this is a thing that happens.
Actual worst part of writing, part III: My husband, coming along and randomly spouting out an idea that makes everything I'm writing better, but also requires me to rewrite several thousand words and replot large chunks. Dammit. (This is kind of the "worse, or better?" worst.)
How you choose your titles: With great difficulty. I tried the 'thematic song lyric' thing with the Odysseus Gambit chapters, and it just stopped working after awhile, so I nixxed it. In general, I want something that captures the feel of the story--for Odysseus Gambit, I wanted something that had sort of a Ludlum/MacLean/Le Carré feel. (I have at least three more books planned for after OG, and titles for two of them: The Janus Duplicity and The Majestic Insurrection.) Sometimes they rise organically from a character--Improvise, Adapt, Overcome was the only thing I could name a story about a former Marine getting her man. And sometimes they just write themselves in the middle of a story, like my X-rated Disciplinary Action. (My first prompt-fill, my first smut, my first slash, my first writing live-blog, and my first post to AO3. It was a lot of firsts.)
Do you outline: For short stories, I tend to be a pantser--I just let the story carry me where it wants to go. For long-form... I started out a pantser, and after throwing out enough words to fill a novella, realized that I had to at least have some idea of where I was going. Now I outline. Hoo boy do I outline. i also usually have three or four chapters actively in progress at any given time: the chapter right after the last one published/finished, and two or three future chapters that may be thematically similar or entirely different.
Why god why would you do that? Because a lot of times, something crops up in a future chapter that's relevant to the current chapter, or it relies on something that has to happen in the current chapter. It's how my brain works; I've tried forcing it into a strictly chapter-by-chapter writing mode, and that just gives me writer's block. Unfortunately, it's also hell on a regular posting schedule; I have to get a backlog of chapters written before I can commit to posting. It'd be easier if it weren't fanfic and I could just deliver a finished product.
Ideas I probably won’t get around to but wouldn’t it be nice:
* Deus Ex AU where Adam Jensen becomes the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, and his arms and legs are Lantern-constructs * A post Deus Ex Human Revolution AU where Darrow's signal turns augs into zombies, and things spiral downward from there. Very bleak, and I'm just not in a headspace to write that right now. * Disciplinary Action II Thought about it, but it's self-contained and doesn't need a sequel. * The Mass Effect AU that's a kind of interstitial romance between Pallin and Shepard.
Callouts @ me: I over-write. Oh, god, do I over-write, and then I have to go back and edit out much of the over-writing. Or I under-write, and then I have to go fill it out later. Eventually I get it right! Also, you will pry my semi-colons and my em-dashes out of my cold dead hands.
Best writing traits: I'm very good at making scenes come alive. I have a knack for character voices, I'm good at setting scenes and getting the atmosphere across. I'm also told I'm good at making unlikable or difficult characters relatable--you understand where they're coming from even if you don't agree with them. And dialogue. I'm good at dialogue. All of the above, I think, comes from years of playing in and running TTRPGs.
Spicy tangential opinion: Creation is like magic. There are days I look at the stuff I've written and I wonder how it ever came out of my head and fingers. And I look at the things other people make and I am just amazed. And artists should be paid for their work. Fuck "exposure". People die of exposure.

White Sails
2433 words
The oceans going to swallow him whole some day and only then could he die happy.
Caspian already gave his soul to the sea, his first great love. Initially I was excited for him and how he got to live out his dreams. He’d write to me about his exploits, I’d gasp and laugh when appropriate, as if he can see, and finally when the stories ended, I’d write to say that I’ve been living the same way: wake up, work, eat, sleep and mostly anticipate. He’d tease that I live like a widow refusing to believe her husband's dead, wasting away staring out the window, hoping for him to someday return to her. Like the ship of Theseus every time he left a part of him had been replaced, how long has he been a man I couldn't recognise, a ghost wearing my lover’s skin.
Only the wooden planks stepped on by Theseus himself belong to the original ship, the rest are imposters high off the glory of His name. Your skin cells regenerate every twenty-seven days – and it’s been longer than that since my hands held his, the wind already swept all memories of my words from his mind. He can only belong to one and she’s infinitely larger than me. To him, her cold embrace feels like coming home. It’s selfish – I’d remind myself – selfish to want to steal what makes him happy all because I feel lonely, he’s loved the ocean long before he’s loved me, and he will long after. I can only hope she’s kind when she does finally take him. I’ve heard that saltwater burns your lungs and that a body only sinks for a moment and as it fills with water it floats to the top, I don’t want them to find his body, he wouldn’t want them to either. I hope his clothes weigh him down and 80% becomes all of him, that he sinks to Atlantis and the sun never feels him again, we don’t deserve it.
But then he comes home, the wind in his hair, salt clinging to his skin and horribly chapped lips, he kisses me hello and I get a taste of what he feels. He tells me he’s missed the warm water from the shower while I wash his locks, that his land legs haven’t grown back yet so can I hold on just a little tighter ‘to make sure I don’t fall of course’. I tell him our neighbours' gossip and he laugh and gasps when appropriate and says that he’s missed the shop at the end of the street, in the morning he’ll grab groceries and those chocolates he’s loved since he was a kid, and some things never change. When it’s quiet and we lull we watch the sun set, sitting on a linoleum countertop in the kitchen, he glows orange in its light and tells me he’s missed me.
When a whale dies its body sinks to the benthic zone, there where there’s no sun, no blood, no heat, no me, or him the oceans creatures eat on its flesh, their entire life's sustenance reliant on an animal they’ve never seen alive and blobfish get their namesake feature from the rapid shift in pressure, they essentially burst while being pulled up by fishermen. The universe is kept spinning by forces we don’t know and can’t name and one day the sun could burst, and we wouldn’t know until 8 minutes later when its light should touch us and won’t. But it did that day, the light travelled through a solar system to shine on him, and shine on me, and that’s how we met. It was fate. Eight years later it’s still fate when Caspian wakes up beside me, his skin a warm brown, like the terracotta pots he brings back to accommodate my ever-growing garden, and his tousled hair a sun-bleached orange, the roots betray their natural umber colour (the same as the eyes he was currently hiding behind tired palms), men like him are born out of stardust, and they can’t help but to replicate its heat. He’s looking at me now, his warm hands place a stray strand of my own umber hair behind my ear and pauses on my cheek, my bronze skin a slight contrast to his, brown eyes reflecting brown.
‘Let’s go over the plan, alright Leya?’ He breaks the silence, ‘we’ll lock up, give the keys to Theo and Honora, they promised to water our plants and dust the place while we’re gone, we pick up your jumper from the market –Eilidh promised it’ll be done by then- and then it’s me, you and wherever you can land your finger on a map.’
‘Yeah, I can’t wait. Me, you and The Caspian’ the smile I give him falters and my bottom lip trembles. He frowns.
It was my idea to come with him, I was tired of being alone and he was tired of forgetting synonyms of vast for his letters home, I knew he exhausted all the ways to say I love you when he started to transcript theology to me:
‘They believe that next to Christ, that’s what they call him, there was a man that lived in sin, two in fact but only one of them matters. They don’t know anything about this man, not even his name, except for his last words. And they were that of forgiveness and salvation. A man whose entire history is left out of the book that chronicles it. We know nothing of his home, his family, his life, not even his crimes, but we know that he loved and was loved in return. I don’t believe a lick of it but by God these people are good storytellers.’
I did want to go. Maybe the second I see the flickering reflected crescent moon on the ocean waves I’d decide I never wanted to leave, that the past 25 years of living and four years waiting can all be justified by that one experience. But I also couldn’t just leave. He was the one with adventures and loose ties and sea salt, and I’m the one that waits. The diligent partner with a cup of tea and open arms for him, who were we if not that? Who am I without anticipation and loneliness? For years, my life was contingent on feeling and watching a ticking clock, and now I just get to be free? It doesn’t sound real. It doesn’t sound fair on the woman I used to be, the one still waiting. He knows how I feel, he must, from the furrow of an eyebrow I know he’s got me pegged.
‘Remember the night before I left- the first time that is- and I kept going over lists, obligations and checking everything twice, I even meal prepped your food for months in advance. And you told me everything will still be here when I get back...’ He pauses to hold my face in both hands, brown eyes locked on brown eyes to make sure I was listening, ‘everything will still be here when we get back. If you don’t want to go that’s fine, we won’t, I’ll spend the next six months right here with you, and every day after that if you want me to. I’m tired of you being alone. But if you do want to go... We lock up, see the world and come back, it’s that easy.’ With that he kisses my temple -the most delicate part of the head – and climbs out of bed.
Honora and Theo promised to give all the leftover perishable foods to the family around the corner, they have seven kids and not enough to feed them all. They also ensured once a week every plant will be watered, all letters brought in, and the surfaces periodically dusted. The jumper Eilidh had made was beautiful, she told us wool is preferable when wet because it resists water and keeps you warm. She made it green, in case I miss the trees, and Caspian paid her double. I had hoped the air would be electric, brimming with something, as if it knew I’m leaving this time too. Everything was the same, same as it's always been and same as it always will. And I won’t be, I’ll go out there, replace my ships planks and come back me, but not wholly or maybe as more, and if Caspian’s with me the whole time who would notice the change, all of my red strings connect back to his.
It was half a day's journey to the port, and I felt it all. At some point my head was pulled to rest on his shoulder and every time the sun shone particularly bright he held a hand over my eyes to shield them. When we were close to enough to the sea to smell it, the briny tang light in the air, he came into himself, as if he swallowed sunlight, and grinned.
I hate this. Caspian told me I will at first, I haven’t got the familial love he has. A runaway father that was only 19 when he met his future wife at the port. The family was forcibly moved to a landlocked town when opportunities dimmed and Caspian's childhood was spending every holiday possible making the hours long treks to the beach, with just enough time to wiggle his toes in the sand and swallow lungsful of water when learning to swim, and when he was older it was learning how to sail with his father. Finally, it’d get too cold to continue so his mother would swaddle him in towels and place him on her lap, until he eventually grew too big for her, together they’d watch the sun set. He told me once that it was like the water was just a mirror and everything radiated pink and orange and golden hues until finally... darkness, and there was twice as many stars as usual. Then they’d go home and count down till the next summer. His love was intergenerational, it’ll grow on you, trust me. But it won’t, I hate this. I feel sick & disoriented, it’s too loud and quiet at the same time. Like when people move from a bustling city, heavy in smog and movement, to a quaint village, and there they find the crickets and pollen too much to bear. There was none of the sounds I was accustomed to and all too many of ones I wasn’t. I can’t even swim.
How did we plan for weeks and not think that I would need to know how to swim?
Caspian had finished prepping the sails and letting us go in the wind's direction, promising he’ll take us as far East as he can find – and then carry on. He had tried to explain all the terms to me, but words like ‘jib’ and ‘hull’ and ‘tiller’ easily slipped out of my mind like water. Instead, I stood by the helm and just watched him work, focusing on the beads of sweat running down his forehead and pushing supper down as far deep as it goes, as to not ruin this for him. When he had finished, he gave me the tour, showing me the saloon, where to cook, where to rest, where to pray, how to store in such a small space and when I was overwhelmingly exhausted from the information swimming in my head, he grabbed some pillows and blankets and led me back to the cockpit. There he prepped everything like it was our bed at home and laid down, gently pulling me down with him, our knees were bent awkwardly, and we were closer together than usual. That’s when I understood When I was younger my mother would bring me to visit her friends and after the initial gasps and hugs and ‘my how you’ve grown!’ they would largely ignore me to talk to each other. One of her friends, Mariam, had a baby boy that would sleep in a wooden bassinet pushed to the wall closest to where I was sitting, when he did stir, they’d finally address me again and tell me to rock him slightly, let him be lulled back to rest. Here, we were lightly rocked side to side by Poseidon himself and entire galaxies shining down on us, like a sleeping baby in a bassinet. I didn’t know there could be so many stars and still such a vast darkness. Caspian told me about the constellations he knows and the ones he’s made up, his own mythologies mapped out above us. And when I was too tired to listen, eyes drooping and his words bleeding into each other he tenderly held my elbow to help me up, shifting so I could rest my weight on him, and walked me to the bed, trying as best he could to push my dead weight into the cramped space. Leaving only for a moment to bring the pillows back in, before climbing into bed besides me.
The next morning, we stopped on still waters, and he taught me how to swim. In the afternoons, after I showed him my grandmothers' recipes for the cold, he tried to teach me more sailing terms and by the evening I’d read to him under the dimming light, I’d have to stop after a moment, too nauseous to read the words. It was a routine we near perfected in a month. I could tell he was happy; he was drowning in it. Shockingly, I was too, a saloon that smelled like garlic and spice, secured down potted herbs, dry storage spaces filled to the brim with my books, and his slow breaths when I should be asleep, was enough. On days the wind was too bad to pause he’d make me use the knots he taught me and shout what I need to do if we tip over, the exhilaration was more than anything I’d ever known.
Resources would run low, and he’d dock in the port of a country I'd never heard of, a culture unfamiliar and language unknown. With limited communication and lots of points & smiles we’d buy what we need and when our food was restocked, I’d ask to stay a few days more. We’d integrate ourselves in the local community and learn how to say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ and plan to return in the holiday season. We’d make pocket communities across the world and relish in hot water and write letters to the people back home.

I feel like Star Trek is a fandom that could really fit well with my love of ecology and alien worlds, but i don't know anything about the Trek universe or the fandom, or the various tv shows in the universe. Do you have any recommendations for which show (or movie? Does Star Trek even have movies?) a new watcher should start with? If not, that's fine, feel free to use this ask as an excuse to rant about whatever random thing is on your mind <3
I am SO HAPPY that you asked me this Kats!! talking about Star Trek is one of my very favorite things!!! I’m probably going to give you more information than you wanted in this answer, but if it’s somehow not enough pleaseee DM me and I’ll be happy to talk your ear off even more :)
(cut so that I don’t clog up people’s dashboards with my incoherent trekkie ramblings lol)
first of all, star trek is definitely the place to go if you’re interested in well developed aliens. we have no shortage of complex space politics here!!
(and we do indeed have movies!!)
a quick note on the fandom before we get into recommendations: I’m not very active in it because I don’t want fandom stress/negativity to impact my enjoyment of something I love so dearly, but there’s no shortage of interest for fanworks! it can be hard to find gen fic sometimes, and you’ll have to keep an eye out for the people who for some reason are against increased diversity and representation in the modern shows, but you’ll definitely be able to find supportive fans. the show’s core values are about embracing those who’re different, after all.
also some background on the universe before I start trying to describe the shows: it’s set in a future where humans have unified, with poverty, prejudice, and capitalism eliminated from earth. humans are founding members of the federation, a multi-species government that preaches tolerance and inclusion as well as emphasizing scientific exploration.
recommendations time! starting with your specific interests, I’d recommend discovery and the voyage home for the ecology side of things. I don’t know much about it myself, but most trek is rooted in real science, and disco specifically has some plant power going on. (minor spoiler but: their ship is mushroom powered!! and the character who’s in charge of that tech is not only fantastic and one of my beloveds- he’s also based on and named after real life mycologist paul stamets!)
*and another point for disco is that, as thee pioneer of star trek’s modern era, it’s easily the most diverse installment of the franchise as far as racial diversity and queer representation goes. classic trek is very progressive for its time, but disco is just. mwah.*
the voyage home is one of the original series movies and it’s first and foremost fun, but also about time traveling to save some humpback whales. captain kirk and company have to bring them back to the future to repopulate the whale population on earth circa 2270ish, and if that isn’t an A-plus movie plot than I don’t know what is.
as far as worldbuilding goes, each series has strengths and weaknesses. as a collective they do really well in crafting a developed universe, but some do a whole lot better at developing certain species and political storylines than others.
this is only partially my bias talking because it’s my favorite show of all time, but deep space nine is really really fantastic at space politics and giving depth to the alien cultures it features. and that’s largely because it’s set on a space station! I love trek’s emphasis on exploration, but ds9 being stationary is a GIFT from a narrative perspective because it forces the characters to face the consequences of their actions!
and because they don’t move, the story lends itself to serialization and complex aliens. the more episodic shows (the original series, next gen, voyager, and most of enterprise) are also my dearly beloveds and have their own strengths, but the bulk of those shows are one off aliens that are super interesting and never seen again. ds9 has those too, of course, but I can count the major players on one hand and each has a well crafted political storyline. the bajoran religious politics plotline in particular always amazes me when I think about it too hard because it’s really really good, and also something only ds9 could pull off. not only because it’s the only trek to really embrace religion, but because it’s impossible to tell a story about a planet’s spiritual turmoil if you’re only visiting it once or twice a season.
(stepping away from my hobby of advertising for ds9, voyager’s got some super fascinating recurring aliens, especially in the later seasons. and enterprise, as a prequel, has the unique ability to showcase humans in the early days of galactic exploration, forging initial relationships with the aliens they’re eventually gonna be in a multi-species government with)
if you want a taste of one the recurring aliens before committing to a show, I’d recommend first contact!! it’s one of the next generation movies, features the borg, and doubles as the closest thing trek has to a horror movie. it’s a continuation of one of next gen’s recurring plot lines (re: captain picard’s trauma following a borg encounter) but I don’t think watching the movie first would ruin the episode’s emotional impact, or be hard to follow without seeing the episode first.
(besides, the movie’s an absolute banger. patrick stewart is. patrick stewart. and alice krige as the borg queen is simply *chef’s kiss*)
shifting gears, if you ARE interested in watching the whole franchise -no worries if you’re not because that’s a LOT of television- there’s a few solid strategies to go about watching everything.
option one: real world chronological (airing order)
(this is pretty much what I did, except I watched the first two reboot movies and then everything else lol)
the original series (1966-1969)
the animated series (1973-1974)
*i feel bad but. I still haven’t seen the animated series yet so I can’t speak to its quality :(
original series movies: the motion picture (1979); the wrath of khan (1982); the search for spock (1984); the voyage home (1986); the final frontier (1989); the undiscovered country (1991)
the next generation (1987-1994)
next gen movies: generations (1994); first contact (1996); insurrection (1998); nemesis (2002)
deep space nine (1993-1999)
voyager (1995-2001)
enterprise (2001-2005)
aos movies (alternate original series, aka jj abrams’ reboot star trek): star trek (2009); into darkness (2013); beyond (2016)
discovery (2017-)
short treks (2018-2019, short anthology style miniseries with some eps directly relevant to discovery)
picard (2020-)
lower decks (2020-)
and more!! but they’ve barely started so I’ll leave them off the list for now lol
option two: in-universe chronological
I... wouldn’t necessarily recommend this one. if you’re interested I’d be happy to organize your watchlist, but like. if you watch it close to airing order, you get to catch cameos, references to earlier shows, and easter eggs! and also going with in-universe chronological means starting with enterprise, which really isn’t a good introduction in my opinion. it’s a prequel, and I feel like you need some prior knowledge before tackling one of those, you know?
option three: mix and match
go for whatever you want! every installment has its strengths and weaknesses, so see what you like and what you don’t. personally, I haven’t met a star trek I don’t like, excepting a few movies and a handful of episodes. so pick a show/movie you’re interested in, and go for it!! I’ll drop a few summaries of some of the shows so you can see if anything catches your eye:
the original series: the one you’ve most likely heard referenced in pop culture! kirk!! spock!! the enterprise!! it’s campy and a little dated, but most of it holds up as quality sci fi. it’s entirely episodic, with a new planet almost every episode, but some of those self contained stories are utterly amazing.
the next generation: captain picard and the quintessential crew of the enterprise-D. it’s the same format as the original series except it’s longer, develops its supporting characters more, and has a handful of recurring storylines. some episodes are really deeply problematic, in the same vein as tos, but once again the politics are super progressive for its time.
deep space nine: captain sisko commands a space station of mixed federation and bajoran leadership, settled next to a stable wormhole. at first the wormhole brings optimism and exploration, but something sinister lurks on the other side. the darkest of the classic treks by far, delving into the horrors of war and questioning the morals of star trek’s utopic future. it’s also the first one to introduce real serialization, with story arcs that last for several consecutive episodes and stretch across multiple seasons.
voyager: captain janeway finds herself and her crew stranded far from home, and they begin their treacherous journey back through space humans have never explored before. it’s a return to the largely episodic format of next gen, and it’s significantly lighter than its sister show ds9.
enterprise: captain archer leads the first human crew out into deep space, building the foundations of what will become the united federation of planets. it’s a little hard to describe the format since the first two seasons are next gen-style episodic, but then season three has a self contained arc and season four is built up of small two or three episode arcs. it’s somewhat of a step down in quality from the golden era of 90s trek, but I still find it really enjoyable.
discovery: ten years before kirk and spock, michael burnham (trek’s first main character who doesn’t start the show in command) finds herself facing political intrigue and personal turmoil. the first of the modern treks, and the first one that can challenge ds9 for the title of darkest storylines and most serialized. each season so far has been a self contained arc, and it’s likely that pattern will continue.
lower decks: an absolute blast of an animated comedy! it features four ensigns (the lowest rank of officer in starfleet) doing the gruntwork on a ship nobody cares about in-universe. I think it’s probably more fun when you’ve seen a lot of star trek, because the majority of the jokes are brilliant references or poking fun at previous shows, but it’s absolutely hilarious and the characters are fantastic. and it’s a legitimate comedy, so it’s probably the lightest of the shows so far.
I knew as soon as the ask came in that I would type you an essay but I didn’t expect it to get quite this long, so I hope it was at least a little bit helpful? and not too terribly ramble-y? my askbox and messages are always open for star trek questions, so if you want clarification or have any other questions feel free to reach out!!!
happy trekking! you’re gonna love it :)

All her life, -̴̠̘̎-̶̮̬̽̕-̴͙̀̕͜-̴̧̘͐͒-̶̘̰̒̈́-̴̩̏͛-̶̮̬̽̕-̴͙̀̕͜-̴̧̘͐͒-̶̘̰̒̈́-̴̩̏͛ͅ- had dreamt of a storm fit for the end of the world. The rain would fall and the lake would rise, such that the water would drown out the last vestiges of the only home she had ever known until only Gruenes Licht yet stood. The thunder would crash and the clouds would roll and the great castle would weather it all, not as a beacon of hope but as an empty warning, a testament unearned.
She ran now through that dream made manifest.
The cobbled streets below were already flooded with a fulm of water as far as she could see. The houses around her sat dark, many of them with their doors flung open to the tempest in their residents' haste to flee in the exodus; the chapel's rear steeple had given way, and dark water gushed out from under the tall oak doors as if from a backed-up drain. With one hand she clasped at her star globe; with the other, she tore free her stifling wet bodice, hiked up the hem of her sodden petticoats and hurried onward to the great castle stairs.
She was the last of them all. Her parents had abandoned their post; her brother's transformation into a sin eater was surely all but complete. Her fellow ladies-in-waiting had been taken by the darkness, one by one. Tadric had usurped Pauldia, destroyed Sauldia-
But he had not taken her.
And of all the court, only she had realized Branden's greatest failure: the archmage was not dead.
And she would bring him to justice, but not alone.
And there was hope - not for Voeburt, perhaps, but for another to find in some far-flung future.
She ascended the marble steps to the palace as hail began to pelt her skin. Her legs burned with fatigue from the distance they had run, and still the worst of the climb stretched up ahead of her. Worse yet, the marble would be hazardous at a run: a single misplaced step could cause a painful slip at best and a deadly fall at worst, but her feet were all she had to avail her now.
Once ascended, she paused for only a moment by the overrunning fountain to catch her breath, and to stare out from the castle's heights at her swiftly submerging homeland. Deep in her heart she knew the godsforsaken visage would be the last she ever saw of it. At first the sight was nearly too much to bear, given the weight of an entire kingdom broken below her. Yet even then, the knowledge that she would be the sole witness to Voeburt's destruction provided comfort and purpose. She alone would shoulder this memory, lock it deep in her heart, and guard it so fiercely that no others would need endure it in her stead.
A heartening chorus, as if of tiny bells, resounded encouragingly in her ear. With that sound accompanying her final steps, she shook out her skirts and readied the pendant she kept on her person at all times: the last remaining key to the palace's doors.
Despite the Light raging outside, the grand hall within sat utterly dark and still. The arched stone ceiling high above remained blessedly intact, granting her a reprieve from the endless torrent of rain for the first time since she'd begun her trek. Even the pattering upon the darkened stained glass sounded to be of a much greater distance away, rather than the same tempest that had consumed the rest of Voeburt.
Then there came the heavy clap of a man's hands, and with it, a single flicker of light illuminated a ghostly figure at the far end of the hall.
"There you are, my dear." His words echoed throughout the chamber as if from an age apart, or else from within a far corner of her own mind. "I knew you would not keep me waiting long."
"TADRIC!" she screamed. The noise echoed back at her amid the oppressive darkness, and her star globe sprang to readiness with the merest flick of her wrist.
He stepped forward, again and again, and his voice grew ever stronger. "Oh, how pleased I am you've come. Your soul will make for such excellent company."
"How dare you, fiend!" she retorted. "By rights you should be dead!"
"Indeed so," he agreed. "I certainly had not anticipated any part of me lingering here. I regret only that I have Beq Lugg and their work on the mortal soul to credit for this... turn of events, but it is a welcome development nonetheless. Overcoming one's mortality grants the most splendid boons - though I imagine you would struggle to relate."
At that, she could only seethe.
He gave a quiet little tut. "That's right, darling. You know I've had the measure of you for years." His smile had always been unsettling in life; on his ghost, it was terrifying. "All that time, and yet it's taken nothing less than the end of the world for you to confront me."
"Enough!"
"Oh, yes. I trust you'll remain so beautifully fierce when I bind your exquisite soul to mine." Tadric was halfway across the hall now, and his outline appeared to grow more and more opaque in the darkness. Even now she could make out the shine of his boots, the meticulous detailing on his robes, the glimmer of a reflection across his sharpened teeth. "I've no doubt you'll last longer than Pauldia did - nor that you'll be far more pleasing to the eye than she was at the end. Or do you truly think yourself enough to hinder me? Alone as you are, with only your little cards for guidance, and none of your kin to aid you?"
It would have to be enough. She would have to be enough. There could be no more Sauldias, no more Pauldias, no matter the sacrifice it would take.
"No," Tadric continued, as if the conclusion had only just struck him. "You cannot harm me. Not now, and certainly not here, in this castle you usurped for so long. You forget I know the way of your wretched kind."
She was undoubtedly within range of his magicks, but he was not yet in range of hers. Only a little further, only a single step more, and she could fall as long as she liked-
"'To take back as much as is taken. To create as much as is destroyed. To give as much as is received...'"
The words she had once sought as a reprieve were poison from his lips, rotten to their very core.
"...And you, my dearest, have a heavy debt to repay."
Far better to repay that debt here, in the service of her kingdom, no matter the cost. "And repay it I shall," she whispered.
"Hm?"
She spoke then the words her friend had taught her - the words she had carried deep in her heart throughout all her years.
"Acht-la ormh inn."
The castle doors burst open at her invitation, showering her in droplets of rain and sleet that glimmered against the light from her star globe and refracted like stained glass upon the walls. Her friend flew in at her back, little more than a diminutive flash of crystalline hair and bright blue petals; yet as they circled the chamber, faster and faster, they dazzled the hall in a shower of fae dust and grew to their full height, where their wings unfurled like pennants in the wind.
"Ready yourself, dear flower!" they shouted.
Upon herself she cast a shield; for her friend, she drew forth the card she had kept in reserve all through her trek: The Spire. In the same instant, they unleashed bursts of pure energy, stellar explosions and fae quickenings in tandem.
Tadric's ghost recoiled, his face contorting in rage or pain. Bathed in the full majesty of the King of the Faeries and trapped by patterns of stars, his form took on an harshness of its own as the Light gathered from the storm without needled its way into his soul, splinter by splinter, and corrupted him from within.
"This- isn't- over!" Tadric spat at her, through the waves of raw Light that bubbled up from behind his lips. "You stupid girl. You worthless bloody changeling!"
Titania cried, "Now!"
And when she stretched out her hand, she called upon the might of the heavens to bind the castle and everything in it - Tadric, the king, herself - into the space of a singular moment.
That moment stretched out across the foreseeable future, across endless possible endings, and ignited in a burst of color.
When the spell faded, Tadric's ghost was gone. The world around her was utterly, impossibly still. The sound of the rains had ceased; the distant echo of Light rang out no more. Only Tadric's memory remained, his laughter echoing within her ears - a nightmare from which she could only hope to find reprieve. The palace doors were shut tight and would not open ever again.
And then Titania spoke into the silence.
"Lyhe Il. Oh, dear, brave flower. It is over at last."
She was weeping, she realized; the king had drawn her into an embrace as soft as a field of clover and as gentle as a warm midsummer's day. She collapsed against their touch, impossibly weak and weary and wanting.
"Hush now," they whispered, and pressed their lips to her forehead. "Sleep, and dream of rainbows and meadows and northerly winds, for you have more than earned your name."
"N-No!" she sobbed, clutching at the fae king's shoulder. "I h-have to stay with you, I-I must ensure-"
"He is gone, my flower, in all the ways that matter. All that yet remains is to expel the last traces of him - and there is time enough for such a task in the years to come. Until then, I would not risk your safety while you abide here."
Years. Such a gentle word for the surety of their imprisonment. "But-" Her tears overtook her again, and Titania cradled her ever more tightly. "I couldn't possibly leave you on your own, and with so much Light! Who will you play with; who will you dance with?!"
Titania traced one of their thin fingers along the curve of her nose, liberating a stray tear. "I entered this castle on your invitation and my own intentions - and here I shall stay, on behalf of our people. It will be comfort enough to know that my flower has found the peace she has sought for so long - and that she rests as a hero to Voeburt and the fae alike."
Yet peace still seemed so nebulous a prospect, as remote as the stars themselves. Peace could not grant her a retroactive belonging among Voeburt's people and court; it could not suppress the abject ache for understanding with which she had come of age in her awkward Galdjent skin. She had given all of herself for both her peoples, her past and her present and her future, and still she could not unmake the years of her own solitude. Only Titania had ever granted her such a reprieve.
If the King of the Pixies wished her to dream, then dream she would.
"Be with me," she whispered. "I know I will wake up without you-" She did not dare wonder what travesties the Light would wreak upon the king during their solitude. "-but until then... do not ask me to fall asleep alone."
Titania acquiesced to this final wish with a single kiss goodnight, and began to sing.
Never harm, Nor spell nor charm, Come our lovely lady nigh; So, good night, with lullaby.
As her eyes closed, she stared up at the kaleidoscopic light streaming in from the stained glass windows far above.
The sight was so lovely as to push all thoughts of the storm from her mind.
