word count: 649 || avg. reading time: 3 mins.
pairing: Tendou x chubby!Reader x Ushijima (by proxy)
genre: hurt, angst, unrequited love, heartbreak
warnings: I mean it, this is sad
synopsis: Tendou falls for his best friend’s girlfriend
___________________________
Tumblr media
When you start dating Ushijima, Tendou is happy for his best friend until Toshi introduces you and, unfortunately, you turn out to be his absolute dream girl from your sweetness and perfectly cuddly figure to your weird humor, taste in music, hobbies - everything seems to match him more than Wakatoshi and a small part of him really begins to hate his best friend for meeting you first.
Especially, because he comes to Tendou for dating advice and it feels horrible to coach his friend how to be romantic with you, to give him suggestions for dates, pointers for compliments and remind him to show you physical affection, too. He hates to see how the perfect gift Tendou had helped Toshi pick out makes your face light up and you wrap your arms around your boyfriend, barely reaching up to his neck. Having to stand on your very tippy-toes you give him an excited Thank You kiss.
To his credit, Toshi immediately informs you that Tendou helped him and the red-head’s heart stops as you turn and your blindingly gorgeous smile is then directed at him.
When you hug him he freezes for a moment before returning the embrace, holding you so closely that it’s almost natural to take a deep breath of your scent. He wants to scream in frustration when you laugh and let go way too quickly. Your warmth still clings to him.
After weeks and weeks of this torture you come to him one day for help because you feel like Toshi might not be the right fit for you as he seems rather confused by the fact that you like to show affection by hand holding, hugging and “… and kissing” you add quietly, cheeks blushed.
That small part of Tendou begins to roar and claw at his throat, trying to make him tell you to dump him then because you deserve better. But he also knows that his best friend is kind and loyal and while he is awkward at showing it, he likes you very much.
And so Tendou encourages you to talk to your boyfriend about your concerns. He feels his lungs burning from suppressing the words he really wants to say instead.
For another few excruciating weeks after this, things seem better for you. He sees you around town, holding Toshi’s hand, glowing with happiness.
But after two more months he spots you sitting on a park bench by yourself. It’s late and he knows you had plans with Toshi that evening.
He comes up to you and asks what happened.
Every fiber of his being tenses when you tell him that Toshi broke up with you. His reason being that it was too much for him to satisfy your need for closeness.
Although, Tendou knew that his friend meant that he wanted to but didn’t feel like he could, he curses him because he could have worded it better.
You begin to cry - again, judging by the puffiness of your eyes.
And now Tendou begs for the words to stay inside. But all the soundless pleas are in vain.
“You can just use me to forget him.”
“What? Tendou, I’m - I - I could never do that to you.”
“Sure you can. I don’t mind. - Really.”, he adds, brightly.
When you don’t say anything but just more tears spill from the eyes he adores so much he lets out a shockingly convincing laugh, “Just kidding, y/n. Don’t worry your pretty little head about it. I’ll talk to Ushiwaka.”
And your face lights up a bit.
“Really? Thank you! So much. You’re amazing.”
“I know.”, he says casually, but feeling like he might break into a million pieces if he stays a second longer, “I’ll call you later, alright?”
And he leaves, not stopping the tears running down his cheeks as soon as his back is turned to you.

Author's note pt.2: I listened to YKWIM by Yot Club while I was writing this, so you can tell why my title is the name of the song hehe lolol. I reccommend listening to it while you read, I find that it really adds on to the atmosphere at the beginning of this :)
~Mod Shoyo
“How long has Tendou-senpai been like this?” A worried Goshiki spoke up.
Semi sighed. “Since he snapped at Y/N the other day.”
Tendou looked like a mess. His normally spiked hair was disheveled and limp. The bags under his eyes got darker. (which mostly everyone thought was impossible) His ruby eyes were puffy and bloodshot. No one knew what to do or how to help him. But Tendou didn’t want any help. He just wanted his apology to be accepted finally so he can have her back. He needed her back.
“He snapped at Y/N?” Reon queried in disbelief. “Man, I wonder what got him so riled up,”
Goshiki looked at his upperclassman with teary eyes. He’d never seen Tendou look so dejected, so depressed. Tendou was always the morale booster. He was the teammate to make everyone feel better and to lift them up. But who was going to make him feel better?
Their middle blocker had lost his smile.
Ushijima stared at Satori from the opposite side of the court. His eyes held the same monotone nature that most people assumed, but in reality, he was actually worried for his friend. Wakatoshi shifted his gaze to the left and noticed the rest of the players just staring at the guess blocker from afar. Nothing was going to change if someone didn’t at least try and help. As the player that Tendou was closest to, Ushijima took it upon himself to make the first move.
“Satori-san,” Tendou looked up, his eyes widening slightly when Ushijima stood in front of him. “You’re going to severely hurt your back if you keep slouching. You should get some rest.”
Tendou looked down at the floor and sniffled. Tears welled up in his eyes for the umpteenth time and fell onto the gym floor. Ushijima didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know how Tendou liked to be comforted in times like this. Hell, he’d never thought he would ever see him like this in the first place.
“Come on Satori, let’s get you some water.” Ushijima blurted out.
Tendou walked away with the ace of Shiratorizawa, sniffling and letting his sobs rack his shoulders a bit louder now. Once they made it to the vending machine closest to the gym, Ushijima pulled out some loose coins from the pocket of his jacket and paid for water. Tendou looked at his reflection in the glass of the machine and sighed.
“I made her cry Wakatoshi-kun,” Tendou admitted. He shut his eyes tightly and let out another sob. “I made her cry.”
Ushijima remained silent. “She was just trying to help and I made her cry.” While most figured the only thing that was ever on Ushijima’s mind was volleyball, he actually was very attentive to the ones close to him. Tendou being one of them.
He knew all about Y/N. Tendou liked to talk about her a lot. She was a manager for Karasuno, Ushijima had actually seen her in person and got introduced to her when they played Karasuno in a match. Tendou was on fire that day. He was trying so hard to impress Y/N, and while Ushijima could argue that she served as a distraction for the guess blocker, she actually fueled him to play his best. Everything about Y/N brought out the best in him, and Ushiwaka knew how much she meant to his friend. He felt horrible for him.
Tendou was in a slump. That was easy for Y/N to notice the second she walked into his dorm to visit him. Her eyes softened at the sight of her boyfriend looking so glum. She dropped everything she had brought with her right next to his door and rushed over to him.
“Tori, what’s the matter love?” She cooed, sitting next to him on his bed. Tendou just stayed quiet. This was worse than she thought. “Do you need anything?”
Tendou sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I need space.”
Y/N’s heart dropped to her stomach. “Sp-Space?” Did he just need a few minutes of alone time? Or did he need space away from her completely, from their relationship? Y/N tried to not let her overthinking get the best of her, but the way he phrased his answer really didn’t help that at all.
“What?” That’s all that she could muster up. Ask him to repeat himself; ask him for clarification.
An annoyed growl left Tendou’s lips and he stood up from his bed. Y/N straightened her posture and jumped at how suddenly he moved away from her.
“Space! I need you to not breathe down my neck and ask me a million questions like you always do! I need you to leave me alone so I can sort through all the shit that's going on right now!”
Y/N was shocked. She was paralyzed and found it difficult to move her limbs. “T-Tendou whatever it is, I’m here for you! You’re not alone,”
“That’s the thing, Y/N.” Using her first name rather than the million pet names he had given her always did something to her. Hearing him use it in such a vain and angry tone was enough to make tears well up in her eyes. “You can’t just let me sort these out on my own. You always have to squeeze yourself into the midst of the problem and I just want five fucking minutes where you just shut the hell up and stop asking me so many fucking questions!”
He was yelling now. His voice was echoing throughout the room, even worse, his words were echoing in her mind. Did she really annoy him that much? Pester him with so many questions that he could never think straight? Did that mean he lied to her whenever he told her how much she’s helped him work through issues?
She’d never heard him so angry before. “Tendou, why didn’t you just tell me?” He scoffed and adorned a smile on his face despite his anger.
“Because I have a million other fucking things on my plate, Y/N. God for fucks sake, are you really that stupid?" Her heart stung with that one.
"That school in France I applied to? Rejected me. I haven’t heard back from any of the safety schools, I don’t have the money even with a scholarship to make it to my culinary school, and I can’t find any jobs right now that are gonna hire me in time to make the payment! The least of my worries right now is telling you that you ask me too many questions and fucking hound me like a lap dog trying to get answers and reassurance out of me!”
Y/N burst into tears, her sniffles now joining the sounds of his anguish. She wiped at her eyes vigorously (Something she did because she hated when people watched her cry).
“Dear god, stop with the tears already.”
If looks could kill, Tendou would be gutted, sliding against the wall of his room drowning in his own blood. The tears burned as they slid down Y/N’s face. The second Satori finished his sentence, he saw her heart shatter right before his very eyes. He didn’t have the right mindset to calm down and realize what he had just done. His chest was heaving with anger, but the look on Y/N’s face was finally snapping him back to reality.
She couldn’t even bring herself to say another word. She simply stood up from his bed and went to the front of his door where she had dropped all of her things. She picked everything up off the floor and opened the door.
“I’m going home. I’ll give you your fucking space.” She choked out.
She slammed the door to his room behind her and he could hear her footsteps retreating. He sank to the floor and brought his knees up to his chest, burying his face in his hands as he sobbed into his palms. His shoulders were racking with cries. He let out harsh screams into his hands and cursed at himself for hours. He fell asleep on the floor, phone in his hand.
He was waiting for her to text him that she had made it to her house safely, but it never came.
Ushijima sighed. As the water fell into the crater at the bottom of the vending machine, his tall figure stooped down to grab it and hand it to Tendou. He popped the cap open for him and shoved it in front of his face.
“Drink this. It’ll help you calm down.”
Tendou let out a shaky sigh and took a sip from the bottle with quivering lips, even as he sipped on the drink, he was sniffling and tears were still gliding down his cheeks. The red head lowered the bottle and now just held the cold drink in his clammy hands.
“You need to apologize to Y/N.” Ushijima stated. “What you said really hurt her feelings and not apologizing is what’s keeping you like this.”
Tendou sniffled. “I can’t lose her Wakatoshi. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I- I let bad habits from my past push her away from me.”
A soft grunt left Ushijima. Tendou looked up at his best friend with a newfound respect. “Go apologize to her. That’s what will make her realize that she misses you as much as you do her.”
Ushijima went back into the gym and left Tendou by himself. The silence gave him the willpower to realize that Ushijima was right. He needed to show her that he’s been a mess ever since he made her cry and he needed to get her back.
Tendou was quickly on the next bus to Karasuno. He knew that she would be at the practice helping them. So would the entire team, but they were an obstacle he was willing to overcome to get to her. The bus hissed and the brakes squeaked as he rushed off. He dashed over to the Karasuno gym. His ears rang with the sounds of volleyballs hitting the waxed gym floor. He threw the door open and the sound alone was enough to get everyone’s attention.
Tendou bowed quickly. “I need to speak with Y/N,” He blurted out. “Please.”
Y/N looked at him with wide eyes.
“You have got a LOT of fucking nerve to show up here after what you did Satori,” Daichi scowled from across the gym.
“Coach,” Y/N bowed. “I’m so sorry for the interruption. May I be excused for just a couple minutes?”
Ukai turned and looked at Tendou. He couldn’t help but think about how much this kid looked like shit. Serves him right for being the reason Y/N showed up to practice so sad. Not even Ukai could bear to look at her looking the way she did.
“You let us know if you need some help, alright? I’ll send Noya and Tanaka out there if you need anything.”
Noya and Tanaka puffed their chests out and walked their manager over to Tendou. Once she stepped out the door, Tanaka grabbed Tendou by the collar of the black hoodie he was wearing. Noya scowled and got up in Tendou’s face.
“Listen here, if she comes in here looking half as bad as she did a couple days ago, we will beat you into a fucking pulp.” Tanaka threatened,
“Our manager means everything to us, so the second that I hear a sniffle or a tear drop hit the floor, you better count the fucking seconds you have left before we beat your ass. And that’s a promise from the whole team.” Noya growled.
Tendou cleared his throat. He had so many smart comments to say to the two second years. But right now, the only thing that mattered was that he got to talk to Y/N.
“I’m here to set things right. I know how much she means to you monster children, but she means more to me. Now fucking let go of me,”
Tanaka shoved Tendou out of his grip and watched with narrow eyes as he stepped outside with Y/N. Contrary to popular assumption, the entire Karasuno team, including the coaches, went to the windows to listen in on their manager's conversation with Tendou. It was so wrong of them, and all of them knew that, but not only did they wanna make sure Y/N was okay, they needed to hear how apologetic that cocky Shiratorizawa blocker really was.
“Paradise, I came here to tell you how sorry I am about the other night. For me to push all of that frustration and fear onto you wasn’t right of me at all and you didn’t deserve to be yelled at the way you were.” Tendou began. “The second I saw those tears fall from your eyes I knew I fucked up. I-I was just so angry and I fell back into my old habit of just pushing everyone away. Now that I have you, I understand that I can’t do that anymore.”
Y/N looked up into his bloodshot orbs. He was being so sincere, she was glad he finally realized he fucked up. But she wasn’t going to just forgive him without speaking about what was on her mind. He needed to feel like shit for what he put her through.
“Thank you for finally speaking up about it. I was waiting for you to apologize.” She admitted. “Look, I know that I can get annoying with the questions I ask, I’ll give you that. But what you need to understand is that I’m throwing everything aside in my life, EVERYTHING, just so I can find solutions to your problems. All I ever want is to help you Satori, and for you to just blow up at me and fucking tell me you need space? You can’t tell me that there wasn’t room for me to think that you wanted to break up with me.”
Tendou froze. She really thought he was breaking up with her? Maybe that’s why she was as upset as she was, and why his words stung as much as they did. She thought that he was leaving her.
“I’m glad you realized that you were wrong. And thank you for apologizing to me. But I need to know that something like this isn’t going to happen again.”
Tendou stammered. For once, there was no snarky comment, no immediate answer for what she was asking of him. The middle blocker looked down at his feet, then he met her eyes.
“I’ll communicate with you more. I should’ve told you about my schools and everything and letting it build up wasn’t good at all. I’m going to be more upfront with you even about the things I’m scared to talk about. I can’t lose you Y/N, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me; you’re my paradise.”
Her heart melted at his words. “I promise you, I will never ever make tears fall from those pretty eyes ever again. It broke my heart to see you leave so angry at me, and it hurt me even more to know that it was my fault. Please, please forgive me.”
She paused. Tears welled up in her eyes once more and Tendou’s face fell. She missed him so much and it had taken her so long to not go and find him, to grovel at his feet and apologize for leaving him the way she did.
She threw her arms around him and buried her face into his chest. He placed his head onto the top of her head and squeezed her tightly. He missed her so much.
“I missed you 'Tori,” She mumbled into his hoodie. “I’m so sorry,”
“Don’t apologize paradise, I’m just glad to have you back now. For good.”
Tendou lifted her chin up towards him and stooped down to place his lips onto hers. The slight chap on his lips meant nothing to her, she was just glad that she had her Satori back. She missed how his lips molded with hers. He missed having someone to run to when he was feeling down.
She was his everything. And he was so glad to not have lost her.

“So you’re…actually leaving?”
Your question is answered with the inexperienced piano notes of Clair de Lune. Long, thin fingers you know better than your own are too harsh on the delicate porcelain, but Tendou still manages to make it sound beautiful.
You think you might be biased.
Despite his awkward use of the sustain pedal–a beginner’s hesitance Tendou still hasn’t mastered–you can’t help but like it. You like almost anything he does, after all.
Against your better judgment, you picture the same setting in a new year and a new place: Paris, three years from now–or maybe four. However long it takes for Tendou to master the piano on top of going to school.
But the picture is a bit different than your current situation: you won’t be in Paris.
The soft tune of the song is only vaguely interrupted by a slightly higher note; even though Tendou’s back is to you, you can see his wince.
If there wasn’t a raging turmoil in your heart–confusion, sadness, and slight anger–you’d move behind him to comfort him, rest a soft, silent hand on his shoulder.
But Tendou continues trying to play, filling the room with a synthetic warmth that does little to ease the strain and suspense that’d been present ever since The News had dropped like a bombshell.
You worry at your bottom lip as Tendou finally eases up on the piano, watching his shoulders flex and his feet move off the pedals. You stay standing, still leaning against the doorframe, your arms crossed as if to protect yourself.
Tendou doesn’t turn to face you until he does, and when he does, there’s something so open and sad in his gaze that only twists your heart deeper in pain.
“Yeah,” he says, fingers idly trailing over the piano keys.
Having too much to say yet unable to find any words, you bite your tongue, eyes darting over to watch as his fingers find comfort tracing over the piano.
Again, you wonder how long it’ll take him to master the instrument in Paris.

Tumblr media
Blurs of colors and shapes come into view as you blink your eyes open, head spinning and body feeling stiff. The buzzing hum of fluorescent yellow lights was the only sound to fill the silence as your vision started to clear. What you’re met with is an empty room, aside from the closed, white folding table that’s propped up against the barren prussian colored wall. A few windows barely illuminated the space as they were fogged up by dust and spider webs. The room was no bigger than that of an average sized master bedroom. Your head starts to throb.
You move to get up, only to then realize why your body felt so stiff. Looking down, you find yourself bound to a white plastic chair. Rope and tape is expertly tied around your limbs and chest, keeping you firmly in place. Panic sets in rapidly as you squirm in the chair. Your breathing becomes shaky as you look around, trying to look behind you.
“HELP! Someone, please!” Heart racing, palms sweating, breathing shallow. A panic attack quickly washes over your senses as tears flood your eyes, the pounding in your head getting worse. “Can anyone hear me? Please!”
You tense up as the creaking sound of a door opening behind you fills the room, your breath catching in your throat. "Oh good! You're finally awake.” The click of the door shutting makes you flinch as you try and fail to turn your head around to see who’s talking to you. “For a minute there, I was afraid I'd given you too much Rohypnol. I guess you're lucky you weren't drinking alcohol last night. You really would have been knocked out for good if you did.”
Last night? Damnit, you knew it was a bad idea to go out. You told your friends you weren’t feeling up to it, but they needed a driver and you knew how fucked up they were going to get. So you went, just so they wouldn't get in a uber drunk and to make sure everyone would be safe. How ironic.
"Who are you? What do you want from me?" There’s silence for a moment, the tension somehow becoming thicker, impenetrable. It's only broken by the sound of his chuckle. It sends a shiver down your spine.
“Perhaps I did cause some memory loss, unless you’re joking. You always were one for pranks, weren’t you?” Sure, you used to be a troublemaker when you were young, but how could he possibly know that? “Come on darling, listen to my voice. I know it’s been a while, but I know you could never forget me.”
Do you know this person? Who on Earth would do something like this to you? You never hung out with anyone shady, and you made sure to keep your friend group full of good people. He still sounded like he was at the door, and you haven't heard any footsteps yet. Maybe you can try reasoning with this guy. "I really don't know what you're talking about. Maybe you mistook me for someone."
"Perhaps this will jog your memory." The sound of his footsteps gets closer. As he approaches from behind, he starts singing. "Baki baking ni ore~ Nani wo?" He stops right behind the chair you're stuck in, leaning down closer to your left ear. "Kokoro wo da yo~"
Your stomach twists in knots as the old forgotten memories from your high school years flood your mind. You suddenly feel dizzy. It can't be…
"Tendou..?"
Tendou perks up as you finally mention his name, smiling wide as he stands in front of you. You finally get to look him in the eyes and you feel sick to your stomach. Tears glaze over your eyes once more. "Thank goodness, you still remember me! I was so worried I'd have to start all over from the beginning again."
Tendou Satori. He was your classmate and best friend back in middle and high school. The two of you were basically attached at the hip, hanging out all the time during and after school. You went to every single one of his volleyball games, cheering him on and celebrating his wins. But during your third year in high school, he just up and disappeared. No explanation or warning whatsoever. You'd tried contacting him multiple times, going to his house, asking people around school, but nothing. You honestly thought he might have just moved away.
He moves closer to you, cupping your cheeks in his bandaged hands. You flinch from his touch, turning your head away. A look of hurt flashes across the redhead's face before it's replaced with a twisted smile, one you had never seen before on anybody. "What's wrong, darling? After all these years you don't honestly think I'd hurt you, right?"

A MISERABLE CHRISTMAS
TW: Fluff.
A month after New Year has passed.
A new year is finally here and you are now back single after breaking up with Ushijima last two months ago. It's hurt. It really does but you tried to focus on yourself. You take care of your skincare, you started to try on new dresses and styles, you tried to hang out with people from other schools and of course, you met new people after transferring to new class.
You managed to block all the toxicity from your life but somehow you feel miserable after what you have said that to Tendou.
Ushijima had two months of cheating with someone else's and the one that broke the truth to you was your own junior. You're in your second year of highschool now and you tried to turn into a new leaf.
As you're going down the stairs to the cafeteria, someone's accidentally bumped their shoulder into yours.
"Oh, sorry!!", he said. He didn't said much but he flashed his smile...a very warm and nice smile that makes you feel so comfortable. He turned around at you to see if you're okay and you took a glance at his nametag.
Semi Eita.
He has white hairs, pretty eyes and the most obvious one...his warm personality.
"It's fine", you said to him. You walked down the stairs again and you bought yourself a sandwich and a strawberry milk. As you're about to take out your phone from your pocket, you realise...nothing is inside your pocket. You got panicked and ran to your class as soon as possible.
When you're going upstairs to go to your class, you saw Tendou is talking to Ushijima. You walked away faster because you just hated to face them now. Finally reaching the class door, you saw Semi guy is standing infront of your class while calling your name.
"Is there Y/N L/N here??", he said. But no one is answering him. "I think she went out. To the toilet i guess?", one of your classmates said to him. He nodded his head and when he turned around, both of you made an eye contact. He didn't break them and so do you.
"I'm...Y/N", you told him. He walked up to you and smiled again. "You dropped your phone. I guess it slipped out from your pocket.", he grins as he handing out your item to you. You bowed and thanked him. You realise he might be your crush now...
When he is about to walk away, you grabbed his hand and called his name. "Wait, Semi!", you said.
"Ehh, yes??", he looked at you confusedly. "Can...Wait, may I know which class you're from? And are you free this evening?", you asked him.
"Oh, that's all you wanted to know? Well, I'm from Second Year and the Fourth Class and yes, I am free this evening", he replied to you.
"Can we go to the nearest cafe around here? I wanted to show my gratitude to you", you said. He smiled again and patted your head. "I would loved to!", he said. He seriously make you feel so fluffy.
That evening, both of you went out to the nearest Starbucks and you paid for his drink. "Thank you for paying my drink.", he said. "No worries, I'm happy. But...how do you know it's my phone that you're holding to?", you asked him.
"Your keychain has your name craved on it... It's basically Y/N L/N", Semi said again. "Wait, which club are you from? Calligraphy isnt it?", he suddenly get interested in you. "Yea...I am. How about you?", you asked him. "I'm basically in a volleyball team. You know right our school has like the best volleyball team?", Semi said. He laughed proudly after saying that. Well, it's a fact.
"Oh wow. A volleyball player... That's great!", you said. It's not so great. Oh, why do you have to get stucked with every volleyball player like, what is your fate with them?
Weeks passed by and you're getting closer with Semi. Ushijima does realized what happened between both of you. Rumours about his new girlfriend cheated on him spreaded all over the school too. Some said she dated him for popularity. Some said just for satisfaction.
Once Ushijima broke up with his new girlfriend, he tried to contact you back but you have moved on and not going back to him.
You knew how much your feelings are growing back because of this Semi Eita guy. He is so mesmerising and makes you fell from him just by looking at his smile.
You two get to know eachother until April. That's when the spring season started and so do you two. Ushijima regretted the fact he cheated on you. You moved on, you're doing well, you trusted yourself and you give someone else's a chance to get into your heart.
Timeskip.
Ushijima watched how you walked on the aisle in your wedding dress that makes you looked way too alluring and gorgeous. Your father put your hand into Semi's and he walked away. Semi holds your hand tight. Then, the wedding ceremony started with the vow session.
Once the vow session ended, the priest asked Semi as the groom to kiss you. Semi wrapped his arm around your waist and pulled you closer to him. He then slowly kissed you passionately infront of the guests and everyone clapped their hands. Ushijima closed his eyes to shut down the feelings of jealousy from watching your lovely day. Semi is a great guy. He is loyal and stay with you since 17 till the age of 25. 8 years of waiting worth it.
The wedding that happened on Christmas day.
You married your own soulmate.

you couldn’t remember the last time you truly felt happy.
no, that’s a lie. because you do remember — and you’d probably always remember — but it hurts to. you couldn’t stop the memories from pooling in the tears welling up in your eyes. pulling the blankets over your head, you buried your face into your pillow and cried. again. like you have for the last two weeks. day after day.
your body still remembered his touch, his gentleness. your heart still remembered his love. your eyes still remembered his smile. your lips still remembered his kisses. your ears still remembered his voice. again. like they did for the last two weeks. day after day…
humming, who’s humming? you looked around, searching for the source of the melody you’ve come to know so well. a flash of red, disappearing as soon as you noticed it.
“tori?” you suppressed a laugh, “come on, i know it’s you.”
gentle hands covered your eyes, a warm presence behind you. “guess who~?” the mystery person sang.
“tendou satori,” you said confidently, putting your hands on his wrists, “the love of my life.”
“correct! it’s me!” he turned you around so that you’d be facing him, “but i’m the love of your life?”
your smile dropped temporarily as you playfully glared at him. “no, toshi is. have you seen him?” you looked around him for the ushijima that wasn’t there for good measure. it was only when you decided that he had been pouting for long enough that you wrapped your arms around his torso, pulling yourself to him, and breathed, a smile tugging once more at your lips, “yes, silly. you’re the love of my life.”
his face broke out in a wide smile, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead, but what he said next was lost in the folds of your memory.
your eyelids fluttered open, blinking groggily to shake the lingering sleep from them. “sh-t…” you muttered, turning onto your back, your forearm against your eyes. a few straggling tears slipped down from the corners of your eyes as you laid there for a while. not that dream again.
there was a knock on your door.
you held your breath. what bad timing, you thought. maybe if you didn’t answer, maybe if you made it seem like no one was home, they would leave. a moment passed and they knocked again. you hesitated, stalling, waiting for them to leave. another knock, but it was more urgent this time. your name was called through the pounding of the door. your breath hitched.
you knew this voice.
finally, you crawled from under the blankets of your bed and shuffled to the door, praying that you were wrong, that you had hallucinated the whole thing, that if anything it was another salesman trying to sell you his product. you opened the door partially and peeked through.
“Y/N! oh… y/n… have you been crying?” his voice broke, eyes softening at your pitiful state. you could tell he was struggling, from the way his arms reached toward you and flinched back to his side again, to decide if it would be allowable for him to take you in his arms and whisper that everything was going to be okay like he used to. so you rubbed at your eyes and shook your head, a sniffle unfortunately saying quite the opposite.
“tor- tendou. what are you doing here?”
he was taken aback, as if he’d been asking himself the same thing on his way here.
a moment passed and you both stood there, silent, watching the other. your heart slammed against your chest, pounding at your rib cage like some monster demanding to be let out. you were still trying to process that he was here, at your door, but you forced a cool stare. it was all you could muster at this point.
“i think your smile when it reaches your eyes is the most beautiful,” he said at last, deflecting the question, the words falling from his mouth by habit. he lifted a finger to your cheek, but you backed away.
“tendou…” you sighed, turning your head away, “you broke up with me, remember?” you tried to close the door, but he was quicker, slamming his foot in the shrinking crack to keep the door open. you couldn’t ignore the pang in your chest, the glimmer of hope blinking ever so brightly in your heart.
“y/n,” he pleaded, “just hear me out?” his red hair laid flat against his forehead and he looked at you with his sad crimson eyes, the darkness of his eye bags a startling deep purple. “i’ll try to make it worth your time.”
you opened the door again, wider this time, but stood in the doorway so that he couldn’t see how pathetic you’ve been. you were acutely aware of the empty ramen cups lying on top of the drawer by your bed and littered all across the floor. no, you had to show him that you weren’t as hurt as you actually were. you had to prove that you were okay, that you could do just fine without him… right?
“can i come in?”
you faltered. yes, your body screamed, please. but you shook your head, wrapping your arms around yourself, “just say what you have to out here.” blunt and painful. you grimaced.
oh how you hated this.
he stared at you but helplessly nodded, “okay. i understand.”
he looked down at his shoes. your eyes followed and it took everything for you not to gasp.
he wasn’t wearing any.
his socks were muddied and soiled. a roar of thunder boomed, reminding you of the happening storm. your gaze trailed back up to his face, stopping at his soaked through shirt and the water that dripped from the strands of his hair.
“actually, wait here,” you directed, “let me get you a towel,” and let the door close.
he obeyed, sheepishly rubbing his foot against the other’s ankle. when you returned, you handed him two towels — warm — they were just in the dryer after all. the small one he used to dry his hair and the other wrapped around his shoulders.
“where are your shoes?”
“ah… must’ve lost them in the rain.”
“sandals?”
he nodded, awkwardly avoiding your eyes. you shrugged, pretending not to care.
“anyways, you were saying?” you were nervous — insanely nervous. you crossed your arms and uncrossed them again, letting them hang at your side before you eventually decided to keep them crossed again.
clearing his throat, he opened his mouth but closed it again, unsure of what to say. you stared at him expectantly.
“para- no, y/n…” he wrung his hands together, “i can’t do this.”
“you can’t do what?”
“i can’t be away from you.” his answer was timid, quiet, so faint that you shouldn’t have heard it, but you did. loud and clear.
you opened your mouth to speak but he didn’t give you a chance to.
“i couldn’t get you out of my head. you’ve never even been to my house but everything there reminds me of you. the letters, the plates. and when i thought about you moving on and finding another person… i… i hated it. i hated the thought of it. i don’t want to be replaced. and i don’t want anyone to replace you. everything we did together, everything we could do together, i want it to be with you. i only want you.”
he paused to smile bitterly.
“i thought that by breaking up with you, i’d let you be free and that i wouldn’t chain you here. your dreams, i have no right to take them away from you, but please…”
tears blurred your vision and you hoped he couldn’t tell that you were close to crying again, to giving in. focusing on the light above you, you willed them not to fall, to push through just a few more minutes.
“you feel like home, y/n. like my… my paradise.”
you choked back a sob.
“i can’t lose that. can we… try us again?”

It's just your typical, hardcore, casual sex We're single but we're lovers, crazy for each other Just your typical, hardcore, casual sex We're wild under the covers, crazy for each other
He didn’t know what to do about your…situation.
Your friendship with Tendou Satori took a sharp turn a few months ago. Before, the two of you were simply classmates. You spent a bit of time together, sure, and he thought you were pretty cute.
Well, maybe he was in denial about how cute you were at first. And maybe you thought he was cute too (or maybe a different word than that), because after one party and an alcohol-filled night, the two of you ended up back in his dorm room.
Since that party, your hookups had been more and more frequent. Just a way to blow off steam, right? You agreed the first time (or, well, second…first completely sober time) that there were no strings attached. Any time outside that, you were purely friends, and that was fine.
For a while.
But the longer this went on, the more he did feel things for you. You were good friends, sure, but he found himself looking to you first when he told a joke, making sure you were laughing. He randomly bought you trinkets he thought were funny or brought you leftover confections from his culinary classes. He started wanting to spend more time with you by yourself, but not in the way you typically did.
But, yet again when he was hoping for a chill night of just enjoying your time together, it turned to something more. Which he enjoyed too, don’t get him wrong. There was never anything wrong with what you were doing, and he was genuinely down for anything you wanted to do. He just wished, sometimes, the two of you could be alone for more than a half hour without someone killing the tension with a make out session (that he initiated usually, anyway. Sometimes actions were easier than words.)
Breathing heavy, he crashed down next to you, taking a moment to catch his breath before even thinking about moving. You rolled on your side towards him, brushing hair that stuck to his forehead out of his face. Such a gentle move after everything you’d been doing for the last—well, however long it had been, he didn’t check a clock—made his face light up bright red. If you asked (which you didn’t, thankfully), he would have blamed how flushed he was on what you’d just been doing.
You didn’t say anything for a while, just stared and smiled. There was so much affection in your eyes he wasn’t sure what to do with himself. Really, he wished you looked at him like that all the time, but that was impossible.
Or maybe it wasn’t.
In a random rush of confidence he muttered, “can I kiss you?”
You nodded, looking as if you were teasing him (he’d just done much worse than that). However he took the opportunity where he could get it, cradling the side of your face. His lips melted against yours and he felt a different kind of rush than he had many times before when he kissed you. Something about it felt right.
He pulled back after a long, sweet moment. Again, it was quiet, until you spoke up. “What was that about?” you asked gently.
Satori sighed. It was now or never, wasn’t it? “I care about you, (Y/N),” he admitted as he sat up.  “More than just a friend way. More than just a hookup way. I was terrified to say something, though, because we said—”
“No strings attached.”
He turned to face you, also now sitting, pulling the blankets up to your shoulders since neither of you bothered to get dressed yet. “What are you—”
“We said no strings attached, right?”
“I-I know that, but my feelings changed.”
“I care about you, too, Satori, but—”
“Not like that.”
“Not like that.”
Processing how fast you agreed with what he said, he felt his heart shatter into a million little pieces. He tried his best not to show it, but there was no hiding that. Not for him, at least, who never hid any of his feelings because it was so much easier to overexaggerate them.
He rubbed his eyes, trying to clear the thoughts from his mind, and leaned down to toss your clothes back towards you. Luckily, they weren’t in a trail from the door to his bed like they had been in the past, but instead in a pile a few feet away.
“Satori—”
“You need anything before you head out? There’s water in the fridge if you want. Feel free to take one.”
“Satori, please—”
“Please just…” he hesitated, trailing off instead of finishing his thought. He didn’t know what he wanted. He wanted you to return his affection, he wanted you to not turn his heart away. But that wasn’t fair to put that pressure on you if you didn’t feel the same way, so it was better if you just…left.
Without a word, you did as he silently asked of you; you got dressed, grabbed the water he offered as well as your things, and left. Leaving him alone, in his room, thinking about the conversation you’d just had.

---
your view on life, death, and the line between them changed drastically since you moved in to a prefecture miles away from city, your old home. not because your parent's solution to cut off all your ties from your toxic city-peers worked or that you are finally a self-actualized person ready to take on whatever hurdle they are facingㅡmore like ready to face people and socialize, but rather because of a peculiar someone in your house.
you have found company with a not-so-person person crashing in your place. apparently, you are the only member of the family who can see the supernatural and as it turns out, your new home is haunted... at least by a harmless lanky red-headed boy.
meeting him surprised both you and him. the latter said that he lived with a number of families for almost a decade in this house but none of them can see him. they can sense him which is a bad thing because it drove them away from the house which leaves him alone in this dusty old manor.
and as time goes by you grow fond of him. he has lots of interesting stories about how he lived. he also told you about his hobbies and friends. you learn various things like how he ironically loves the movie ghost and its sountrack unchained melody by the righteous brothers. he told you that he secretly watched it in his room, a few years after its release and was obsessed with it.
and from that point in his life, he never would have guessed that his clock was ticking.
he was murdered at the age of seventeen at the year 1993. unfortunately, up until now he doesn't know who took his life as he was facing the other way when he felt five jabs along his back that happened here at the backyard of the manor. he is sure that he is in good terms with everyone in his school and on top of that he has quite few good friends.
since then he was stuck in this manor, the huge house that used to be his family's. his mother couldn't accept his death so his father was forced to sell the property leaving his ghost behind.
from endless sitting by himself pondering why the hell he is stuck in their house, tendou came up with a theory. he declared to you one afternoon. he thinks that the reason why his soul could not be put to rest is because justice was never served. his death was a cold case. although the case is still considered young, it's about to reach it's 10th year. tendou is is tired of pointlessly existing.
he wants to move on just like everyone else who knew him.
so, with all the effort you can pull off you begin searching for answers. your fascination on crime documentaries play to your advantage in your newest agenda. but tendou is not amused by your idea. to him, the closer you are into finding his killer the greater the risk and danger. he didn't want you to get hurt since unlike him you are alive. you have a future ahead of you.
hence, when he senses that you are leaving the house not for academic purposes. he scrutinizes his eyes at you.
"you can't always protect me from everything. you can't even leave this house." you say as you pack your things inside a small backpack.
"well, would you consider not leaving the house either, for your own safety?" tendou, leaning against the door frame crossing his arms as he glues his eyes at your back.
"definitely not." you quickly respond, hauling the bag over your shoulder.
"hey, let's take this seriously." tendou's voice lowers as he follows you behind.
"i am serious about this!" you turn around to face him only to realize he is a few inch away from you. the cold wisps of air coming from him send shivers down your spine. albeit, he looks at you through his lashes with worried eyes.
"please, i-" as though he was about to reach for your face, he stops mid-air before surrending his arms to the pull of gravity. if he was breathing, he would have dragged a long sigh by now. "i appreciate your effort in helping me find peace but that's just my theory. i don't want you to get hurt. what if i'm wrong? what if you get harmed? what if the killer is two steps ahead of you and they know you're after them? i can't let anything or anyone hurt you."
as you study his dilated eyes, you are tempted to finally give in and just let all your progress go to waste. but you can't, you are one more clue away from knowing who killed him and you can't let this slide. if this is the way to free him, then a day meddling with the devil is worth the shot.
"i'll be home before seven. this will be my last trip, i promise. i have an idea who it is and i just want to confirm my speculations. if anything gets suspicious i will go home right away." you lift your hand as you attempt to hold the side of his face but just as expected, you are welcomed by nothingness. nonethless, you continue. "now, relax those eyebrows and smile at me. i'll be home later, wait for me." with that you leave the manor, turning around for the last time as you give him a smile.
it's past seven and your parents are home from work yet you're still not here. tendou becomes aggitated. you promised and you never break promises. your mother went up to your room, that used to be his, to search for you since you are always at home before they arrive. when she sees that you're not in, she shrugs it off thinking you might be busy with school.
it's quarter to nine in the evening and the main door is still locked shut, unmmoved since your parents' arrival. tendou paces back and forth and your parents begin to worry. your father calls the town police and thankfully they offered to search for you.
ten to eleven in the evening. still, your room is empty. you are not answering to your parents' calls and it's starting to cause them panic. this is unlikely of you and your mother desperately wants to know your whereabouts.
at exactly twelve midnight, raps of knocks are heard from the front door. everyone including tendou shoots up on their feet. your father asks for the person's identity behind the door and a man says it's the police. upon opening the wooden double door, the officer with badges along his chest swallows in air before speaking.
"goodevening ma'am and sir, we have news regarding your child. you might want to sit first because-" the officer was cut off by your mother's scream.
"just say it! i can't wait another second!" your father pulls your mother by her arm, one hand rubbing her back as he calms her down.
"i'm sorry ma'am and sir but your child is found dead of multiple stab wounds in a ditch near the river. the prefecture's head police department is investigating the case." right then, tendou's world shatters into pieces, peering at his hands as he trembles.
what has he done?

When Tendou woke the next morning he was curled around your pillow drool streaking down the side of his face, head jerking in an almost bewildered shock he stumbled onto his feet padding out into the halls of your home towards the only place you could have gone. Once he had entered the living area the crisp chill of the morning air confirmed his assumption. There you sat like a vision of a deity painted in the sorrow that brewed their creation, despite it all he still found you to be a vision even if it was a rather inappropriate time to be fawning over you.
Your soft laugh slicing through his thoughts dragged him back to reality as he scurried to toss your pillow back into your room. Embarrassment burned hot on his pale face as he shuffled back into the living area , head hung low as his long shirt did little to hide the fact his blush was spreading down to his thin chest. You had made your way over to him, the layers of your shrine attendant garb shifting alongside your body catching his attention as he tried to divert his energy away from being so embarrassed.
"Do I need to . . . um . . . I'll go get my festival clothes so I uh . . . don't look like a sore thumb helping you today."
Despite the bitter sorrow gnawing at your very being watching Tendou scramble about yet again never failed to bring a laugh from you.
"Everyday clothes are fine, but I'm sure Grandma would love to see you in those dorky festival clothes one last time."
With his cheeks puffed out Tendou had sent a half hearted glare your way along with a light slap to your arm before he scuttled off to his parent's house to get dressed. That little interaction was the last bit of happiness that graced your day as you and your childhood friend kneeled below your Grandmother's beloved persimmon tree, a deep hole dug as you held the box containing her ashes in your shaking hands. The only reason you even noticed your body shaking sobs was because Tendou had leaned down and pressed his nose into the side of your hair as he spoke, voice soft as if he were addressing a fragile child.
"Want me to do it?"
Not trusting your words as warm tears streaked down your puffy cheeks all he received was a jerk of your head as you shuffled forward. You felt his touch reluctantly leave you as he moved to bow his head in offering to the gods as he began the prayer for your Grandmother's safe passage to the afterlife. The fear of dropping her was almost palpable as you lowered the box into the ground, clammy hands scooping the dirt onto her handful by handful all while Tendou's low voice murmured practiced words he had spoken at your parents shrine inside your home many times. . . though this time it was for the woman who had helped mold you two into the adults you were today. The woman who had nurtured your wounds and dreams everytime you went on and on about your future careers, no matter how absurd your ramblings became she always listened and encouraged. Hands having long since grown raw from scooping dirt, preferring to lay her to rest with your hands instead of the spade she had purchased, you jerked as if burned when Tendou grasped your wrists moving your hands away as he patted the dirt down firmly with his larger hands.
"Your skin looked irritated. She would've come back and clobbered me if I let you get hurt laying her to rest."
Glossy eyed you watched as he grabbed your wrists again, turning your hands palm up as he dusted the dirt off them before gently tugging them towards his face. As if on autopilot he placed a kiss on your skin taking a deep breath of the earthy sent of dirt mixed with your natural smell before he tugged back fully, letting your hands drop into your lap. You both sat there in silence as the world kept moving outside, people kept milling about enjoying their days. With a bitter laugh you hoisted yourself up offering a hand to Tendou which he denied in favour of standing and tugging you into a hug his face buried into your hair.
"How about we skip our breakfast date and take Milk to the beach?"
The way that word rolled off his tongue was almost like it was coated in a bitter toxin. . . almost as if he expected you to retract your words even without his prompting to skip it. Your hands slid up his back, fisting the gaudy yellow fabric of his clothes as you nodded into his chest voice muffled.
"Don't say it like that, I want to go on a date. It's just this is all a fucked way for us to confess . . . so can we just skip that part?"
Tendou grasped the sides of your head and tugged you back so he could gaze at your face, a dopey grin on his lips despite his equally tear streaked face. The lanky red head leaned down to press his lips to your own, this time there was not clacking teeth or bumping noses. It was sweet, like it was out of both of yours teenage dreams and fantasies you had for so many years. Though you were the one to break it off gently bumping your nose against his own as you spoke, voice soft as if you didn't want to disrupt this moment and have him fade into smoke slipping from your grasp.
"Lets go get changed, you look dorky in that piss yellow fabric as Reon would call it."
That was the only prompting he needed to stuff away his own sadness and grab you by the waist spinning you about in the air like you were children again. Though his little happy outburst was cut short by a loud bark and the sound of large dog paws bounding towards you two. The impact of Milk on his back forced both of you to the ground, you bracing yourself to avoid Tendou getting hurt from the hard ground. Any of the knee-jerk irritation at being flung to the ground in cream and light brown clothing was quickly dispelled when Milk's fluffy white face popped into your vision as she wedged her large fluffy body between you two. Wiggling on the ground as she licked about wildly missing her targets with most of them, but the didn't stop her giddy wiggling. Which had only been encouraged by Tendou leaning down to rub his face into her fluffy stomach as he patted her chubby belly beside his head. Rolling over you propped yourself up to gaze at the scene beside you. It brought a sickening sense of happiness to you even if in the front of your thoughts you declared you would never be truly happy again without your Grandmother, that declaration was rendered false. Maybe with your two idiots life might be bearable even without her guiding hands leading you down your proper path.

Voicemails After the Breakup (Haikyuu!! Headcanons)
*GIFs not mine*
A/N: I pity the fools who ignore this a/n bc WARNING, these are hcs without those stupid bullet points bc I have suddenly emotionally decided that they fucking suck. Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy the light angst, for all those survivors who are still vibing in this fandom. Enjoy!
Word count: 1968
Tumblr media
Tooru Oikawa:
“I’m totally and completely over you.”
That’s how the message starts.
Part of you wonders if you missed something, or accidentally skipped ahead. It’s so immediate, like Oikawa could barely wait for the beep before tearing into you. Like he needed to spit poison the second he had the chance.
And it’s one of those biting remarks that he wants to let fester—for a while, evidently; he doesn’t say anything else for another five minutes.
All that follows is a loud thud, like he’s thrown the phone away from him. And then footsteps, like he’s pacing, pacing, pacing back and forth, trying to think of more scathing words by burning holes into his carpet.
You hit a point where you think you should delete the message, maybe try and not care about whatever else he may or may not say after waiting for so long. You nibble on your nails and tug at the snarls in your hair. You pick four pieces of lint off your sweatshirt and seventeen more off the blanket draped over your lap, and you know how many there are because you line them up and count them afterwards as you wait, anxious, listening to your ex-boyfriend’s panting.
But a small rustle stirs at that five-minute mark, right against your ear. And a sniffle.
“Fine.” Oikawa’s voice cracks. “You win.”
You suck in a breath.
“What do you wanna hear? That I miss you?” He sniffles again, then scoffs bitterly. “That I miss you so fucking much I can’t sleep at night? That my bed is so fucking cold now I can’t even stomach sleeping in it? That every girl I see I automatically compare to you because I have to—I just fucking have to, all because she’s not you. And it makes me sick.”
His chuckle is sour and crackles harshly into your eardrum. “Am I stroking your ego enough, sweetheart? Because you win. You fucking win.
“I want you back.”
He sighs, and it sounds like he’s rubbing his forehead.
“I need you back.”
More beats pass in the silence. More sniffles, too, but stretched out, like he’s trying to steady his breathing.
You don’t think it’s helping him any. As you wipe the cuffs of your sweatshirt underneath your eyes, his voice returns, thoroughly raw and wounded. It squeaks out of him, barely above a whisper. His voice is so loud and tender, like he’s cradling the phone against his cheek.
Your hand against his warm cheek, curled over that pink skin, fingertips inches away from brushing through those soft strands, wiping tears. That’s what you wish it was.
“I didn’t know…”
A shaky breath. You hold yours in return.
“I didn’t know anything could hurt this bad.”
He swallows thickly.
“Those last few moments after you left—I thought that would be the worst of it. When you just walked out. And I keep seeing you do it, over and over and over, in my head like I can’t help but torture myself with it.
“I never knew it would get so much fucking worse.”
He whimpers a little, and your heart constricts unbearably. You tear at the damn thing buried underneath your sweatshirt, massaging the skin like it can soothe that phantom ache.
Oikawa must hate you. Maybe he hates you like you hate him: not because of the breakup, but because you can go for weeks without seeing him, holding him, kissing him, and everything still hurts like that last time.
“Thing is, I could’ve sworn you weren’t always in my life. It’s been two years. Only two years. And yet I can’t remember a damn thing before us. It feels like it was always us. Some fog, and then you, and then everything afterwards. Everything that was us.”
“And I hate that we had it so good, YN. I really do. Because missing you has been the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.”
The frustration in his voice is familiar, a sickening sense of deja vu around it, and you latch a hand over your mouth at how vividly the image comes to you: Oikawa tearing his fingers through his hair, teeth gritted, cheeks flushed and shiny. Like when he lost a game, but different somehow.
Like this was something he didn’t even know he could lose.
He’s crumbling in a way he doesn’t know how to stop. That ugly part about having something wonderful and new—the moment it’s gone, what the hell are you supposed to do then?
“I just—Goddamnit, I can’t stand how badly it hurts anymore. I can’t,” he cries, desperate and aching, like his hand is fisting at his heart. You can hear the breath hitching in his throat, the hiccuping breaths after his sobs. You can hear every tear, feel it against your own cheeks, a soreness building at the front of your skull.
Too many tears. Your body is screaming at you, too many fucking tears.
But it’s him and he was yours and you were his.
Were.
You were his.
You had no idea how much that single thought could make your entire chest throb.
Oikawa inhales, and it makes your heart race against the thick wall caging it in, squeezing against it.
“I need to see you.”
He says the thought like it’s just slapped him across the face.
“I need to go see you, I—I have to.”
He mumbles to himself unsteadily, like he’s rocking back and forth. Debating, really, what he’s supposed to do, if he should do it at all, if it’s right after everything.
You should probably think he’s wrong.
You probably shouldn’t be curled over your phone, eyes wide, mouth open, not making a fucking peep. Waiting to hear what he’s going to do.
Maybe—just maybe—you shouldn’t be telling yourself that as the voicemail counts down to its final seconds, if he decides he’s not going to go to you, that you’ll definitely be going to him.
“I can’t just sit here. I can’t stay in here, without you. This isn’t right, I—”
Your breath hitches when you hear the frantic jingle of keys.
Then the sound of a door slamming.
His footsteps racing down his apartment’s stairwell.
A car engine revving.
“I need to see you.”
And the voicemail ends.

Satori Tendou:
The message begins with a scoff of utter disbelief.
“Is that what we’re doing now?”
He pauses, almost like he thinks you’re going to respond.
“Heard from someone that I suddenly have syphilis. Yesterday, I had herpes though, so I guess I’m gonna have a tough week.”
A rustle like he’d shaking his head, like he can’t fucking believe it.
“And sure, okay, I figured that’s fine. You can say all that shit, and it won’t really stick because everyone knows it was us and that it’s you and you’re hurt.”
He sighs.
“But I saw it, sweetheart. I saw it.” The phone whines like he’s adjusting it against his face, and his voice is suddenly lower, darker.
“You don’t get to have it both ways, you know. You can’t spread all that shit—all those rumors about how shitty everything was and how we didn’t have anything going for us—and then turn around two days later wearing my sweatshirt. And you don’t get to wear that necklace I gave you for our anniversary and then run away from me the second you see me. That’s just not fair—you’re not playing fair anymore.”
Something swishes around like loose clothing, and a large huff greets your ear from what must be Tendou collapsing into a seat. When his little sounds become quieter, that relentless humming and the excitable clicks of his tongue against his teeth, you figure he must have put the phone on speaker and balanced it on his knee like he always did. Mid-conversation with Ushiwaka, he always used to spin his phone with those long fingers, or bounce the damn thing up and down against his frantic leg.
And the voicemail came through late last night, one of those dead hours where the only ones awake were Tendou, his scrambling thoughts, and the moths flitting back and forth outside his glowing window. He was always awake, always thinking, always doing something.
When you’d first broken up, after one long, wrenching fight where you’d both lost your voices and the frustration welled so high you just couldn’t breathe anymore, you’d been thankful for the idea of sleeping soundly for the first time in months.
You’d been wrong. You weren’t even sleeping anymore; just long, slow blinks where your phone screen would magically turn from 3:45 a.m. to 7:25 a.m., and in five minutes you’d have to get up and slug your way through another day.
Tendou had been the same. Those naturally wide eyes sagged under the pressure, and the curve of his spine had deepened like he’d been hauling the lack of sleep everywhere he went.
He must be sitting at his window now, at this moment in his message, pale skin aglow with wispy tendrils of moon. And he’s calling you. And he saw everything you’d done.
“Not fair. Not fair at all,” he whines, teasing. Always, always teasing, and if you hadn’t heard the slight cripple in his voice on the last word, you’d have gone on thinking he viewed it as one big joke.
You’re sure he heard the same thing you had—that he couldn’t keep acting like it was all fun and games. His usual, cat-like smile surely fell into a pert little frown, pale lips twisting like he’d sucked on a lemon.
No fun, no fun, no fun, he must have been thinking.
“Ya see, I thought we had a little deal,” Tendou drawls. “You’d talk smack and start dressing all pretty just to spite me, and then–and then I’d go ahead and delete all your pictures and put your name as ‘Bitch’ in my phone. And in, like, two weeks, we’d just be two ships, whoosh, whoosh, passing each other on the high seas of life, ya know?”
He breathes a ghost of a laugh.
“But, sweetheart, you look like shit.” He chuckles for real this time, and it’s disgustingly hollow. “I’m not even kidding. Like someone ran you over three times every morning—it’s horrible, really.”
You curl into yourself even further, and you’re smiling, grinning, lips peeling with how much you’ve cried and how little water you’ve drank after. You hate him; God, you hate how he can make you laugh and cry at the same time.
“But that’s okay, I’ll give you a pass just this once. I haven’t deleted your pictures yet, so I botched my end of the deal, too.” Tendou tsks his tongue.
“I won’t go easy on you, though. Here–here, how’s about this: for every day you stop wearing my clothes—because they look horrible on you, sweetheart; really, you’re painful to watch—I’ll delete one of your pictures, eh? That means, in about–uhhdivideby365daysinayearignoringleapyearbullshit–ah, seven years, I’ll have held up my end. S’that good with you?”
You lean your head back, letting the tears flood your hair as he chuckles to himself.
“Fuck it,” he says after a pause. Hopeless. Breathless. “Fuck it.” He must be gnawing on that pale lower lip, biting and nibbling until it bleeds. Because he lets something go to sigh again, and he must have smacked his head against the wall, and then you think he sniffled.
“I still want you. I’ve always wanted you. And I’m tired of missing you and wanting you. Doing both hurts too much.”
Tendou soughs.
“So I’m still your Chicken Tendy, baby. Always. And I’ll be here when you're ready, syphilis and all.”

˖ ࣪⊹ he sat In front of his desk doing his assignment his focus on them as you watched from the other side. It was weird the feeling that you’ll both be graduating soon. That you won’t see each other every day because of school, the sickening feeling of being accepted into different universities. Having to possibly work long-distance relationships.
The nightmare of breaking up because of that, living far away and not being able to work a relationship, the fights, the stress. That you wouldn’t be with him for the rest of your life that all of the talk of having a future might have just been talk… “I can feel you staring..”
You didn’t say anything just watched him you could feel your self starting to cry. All of it being so overwhelming, that maybe just maybe he won’t be yours anymore, that all of the memories and moments you’ve created and shared we to be forgotten. That he’d give up on you, that your ‘difficult’ nature would get rid of him even after all this time. That he’d get tired of you.
His eyes finally left if paper meeting your teary eyes, his brows frowning “love what’s wrong?” He asked his hand coming to cup your face whipping away stray tears that slipped down your face. “Common talk to be baby..”
“Please don’t give up on me..” you sobbed, “please..” his eyes filled with concern and he moved you close to him. “My love what makes you think that I’d give up on you, ever.” He asked his attention fully in you now.
You could only shake your head, nothing really just these intrusive thoughts that haunted you because you did want to be with anyone that he was the person you could only see yourself with ever. “I don’t know..” you muttered a frown plastered on your wet face.
“Hey, hey listen to me, just because we’re graduating doesn’t mean I’m gonna leave you. I dosent mean that if we go to different universities I’m not ever gonna take a train to come see you even if I’m traveling across the country. That I won’t call you every chance I get, hell I’d transfer schools if needed no matter how hard it is. No matter how angry we get at eachother I’d be right by your side once again. Because every day I wake up, every time I go to sleep I hope in the morning you’ll still be mine.” He spoke in full sincerity.
God his heart broke that you thought he’d ever give up on you because he may not be as open and giving to others but lord with you. With you it’s different his mindset is heart is so open, and he doesn’t want that with anyone else how could he? When you were right in front of him.
You were perfection no matter what. He pulled you ups to his lap your arms wrapping around his neck and his lips kissed your neck and shoulders softly. “I don’t want anyone but you.”
“I am yours, as you are mine. I plan on growing old with you I’m in it for the long run alright? Because I wanna be with you..” You nodded “I wanna be with you to..” you muttered lips meeting his the kiss filled with such love.
“I’ll find you no matter what.”

How to kill someone
Tendou Satori x f!reader
Summary: Satori was alone his whole life. Always the monster that nobody wanted around until he found someone that would stay with him till the end.
Words: 2.5k
Warnings: bullying, insults, implied suicidal thoughts, loneliness, angst, hurt/comfort
Tumblr media
There was only a little boy sitting at a large table filled with plates and cups for no one to be used, with drinks and snacks that no one would touch. He had a little party hat on his red hair but no one who he would share all the happiness, that once radiated of him, with. His little hands were clenched tightly into his new shirt, his bottom lip wobbling and his eyes becoming glassy but no tear was shed. A woman with a large smile came into the room, holding a cake with chocolate gloss all over it. It wasn`t a masterpiece but it showed that she cared.
“Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Satori. Happy birthday to you!” Before her silvery voice could finish the song the boy in front of her started weeping. His face scrunched up until a stream of tears followed. His mother gently placed the cake on the fully decorated table, just to crouch down next to her boy and hold him tightly. “Ohh honey, I´m so sorry.” His tears were soaking into the fabric of her wonderful dress but she didn`t budge. She didn`t push him away or reprimand him for ruining it. Satori was just a child desperately wanting to feel loved and if his friends couldn`t do that, then his mother would need to step up. “Why didn`t they come?” His little hand still clinging to her form while his pleading eyes were looking right through her. How should she answer that? How should she explain to her son that his friends were playing with his feelings, trying to torture him? “I don`t know, darling.” She tried smiling, lifting the corners of her mouth but it couldn`t reach her eyes, because she knew. They both did.
Tumblr media
Every year after that he tried again and again. But no one ever showed up to his birthday parties. After that, the first day of middle school was the chance he had been waiting for. He was bouncing with energy, ready to make everything right. When his mom pulled up to school to drop him off he saw all these unfamiliar children. The reason for all the nervous tugging and quickly looking around from others, was the reason Satori's heart was nearly pounding out of his chest, accompanied by a big smile. Nobody knew him here. Nobody to ignore him, pretend to be his friend but call him names behind his back. It was finally going to be better.
His mother tried to give him a reassuring smile, holding his hands for a second too long with clammy hands while saying goodbye. As soon as her boy turned around running over to the other kids going to his classroom, her smile fell and she started nibbling on her bottom lip. Nearly making it bleed again after doing it repeatedly for the last few days. He was gonna be alright. Satori bounded into his new classroom. Eyes sparkling with excitement. Finally, after everything he would find friends. He could join a sports club to find people that had the same interests as him. They could train together and go to tournaments. He would be just like everybody else.
One of his little hands was reaching for the doorknob of the classroom while his other one was holding the strap of his backpack. Squeezing it occasionally to contain his excitement. The door was pushed open and a few heads turned around with big eyes. Nervousness radiating off them to see who else would be in their class. Satori's smile stretched over his whole face, showing his teeth that were still a bit too big for his mouth. His eyes scrunched together a bit. His eyes scanned the crowd for a place to sit, waving shyly at his new classmates that were still watching him until his eyes landed on them. Two boys, who seemed ohh so innocent but were the demons his nightmares were made of. His supposedly friends, which ignored him, talked behind his back and called him bad names at the end of primary school. They were everything he had wanted to avoid for his new beginning. "Hey, look who else is here?" Akui pointed out. He was a plain-looking kid. Dark hair falling over his face and almost hiding his small brown eyes. He was gesturing towards Satori, making the other boy at the table next to him turn around. Yumekuis freezing cold eyes fell on him and a wicked smirk danced along his features that had to look so innocent to everyone else seeing their interaction.
"Hey freak, nice to have you back in our class." The glint in his eyes darkened while he waved toward Satori and made a gesture to the table in front of them. They wanted him to sit with them. It wasn`t a friendly request so they could all be together. It was meant to be Satori's slow execution. He wanted to torture everything that Satori stood for. But he sat. Even though everything in him screamed to stand up, to run, to fight, to cry, to do anything but sit. He sat. Moving mechanically and not moving a muscle after he had found his place. He was paralyzed. The cruel truth of destiny had shown him that he could not outrun his fate. All other children would have been ecstatic to see a familiar face in the same room as them but for Satori it was a nightmare come true. Satori had thought weeks before stepping foot into his new classroom that things would be finally better, but after a few months, he realized how horrible it was going and that nobody had his back except for himself. And even he wanted to give himself up so badly and put a knife in his heart to end it all. The pain and suffering. The feelings. From day one everyone was against him. He became the monster. The soul-sucking demon nobody was allowed to touch otherwise you got a disease.
It was the second period. Their teacher had written a math problem on the blackboard and tried to explain a new formula to solve it. But it was hard to listen when little paper pieces were stuck in his hair and occasionally wet pieces found their way to his forehead. Satori was never sure if someone used water from their bottle for it or just their own saliva. His table was filling up with garbage from every side. But their teacher stayed oblivious. Never calling the other students out and putting an end to the battle against the monster, as the other children often called it. As if he was a demon that would steal the happiness out of their lives and they had to fend him off.
It never ended there. Throwing garbage was just the beginning and as the months progressed his classmates grew braver. Putting his binders into the trash followed by his backpack. They stole his homework and pulled down his pants. It was exhausting. He was always waiting for the next attack. A new move they would pull on him to hurt him. It didn`t matter what he did to prevent it. They were always there. Watching him, waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack and humiliate him. All their eyes were always on him. He could even feel them at home in the own comforts of his room. Middle school was hell and Yumekui was the reason it got created. The redhead was at the top of the mountain called loneliness and was just a slight push away from rolling down the other side, plummeting into a deep, cold lake that would finally freeze him. An end that he could already see from the top. It didn`t take long as the last push came. He was a stone that got kicked down, so it could sink into the darkness.
It was a Thursday afternoon and the sun was shining mercilessly down onto the courtyard. From the window, he could see children playing basketball or hide and seek. They all had huge smiles plastered onto their faces and even the kid that fell a second ago, was already on his feet again when one of his friends stretched a hand out to him and helped him up. Satori also needed someone to help him up. He joined the volleyball team of his school to find a person that could understand him. Instead, he found his talent. A passion that had kept him alive for longer. One that gave him hope. They had training on Thursday afternoons but as he wanted to grab his bag full of sportswear, he grabbed into nothingness. His bag was not where he had left it. The emptiness of the coat rack was taunting him. He could already see the disappointed and pitying eyes of his mother when another binder got lost or his backpack broke again. But losing his sportswear was worse because he knew he would have never misplaced it. Volleyball was his dream. He would never be so careless as to jeopardize it. The snickers coming from the last remaining students in the classroom also confirmed it. He hadn`t misplaced or lost it. It got stolen, because everyone hated him and no one wanted to play with him. No one could endure the satisfaction in his eyes when he blocked another spike and finally had the upper hand. So when they had a chance to take away his safe space. His paradise. They stopped at nothing. No feelings or expenses were spared because for them he didn`t deserve it. Satori went with hanging shoulders out of the classroom, eyes fixated on the floor so nobody could see the tears dripping down his cheeks. He was just a boy scared his whole life would be similar. Full of people that didn`t know him but hated him for his looks. He was scared that the bullying would only get worse, with no one to rely on but himself. He walked slowly down the corridor. Thinking about just going home, skipping training when anyways nobody wanted him there. Or if he should go to the gym, make up an excuse about forgetting his sports clothes. Standing his ground and showing his classmates that they couldn`t take that from him. But would it be worth it? To arrive there and only see disgusted faces. Two girls were coming his way, whispering their words and snickering quietly. They had something to do with it. Satori could see it in their eyes. They knew and they didn`t look at him with pity, they thought he deserved it. Until screaming was heard from the end of the corridor.
A girl was standing with their back towards him, gripping a bag that looked incredibly familiar while Yumekui was holding onto the other end. "Stop it! These are not yours!" The girl pressed out. Her whole face was red for exertion but her hands were not budging when Yumekui tried to rip it out of them once more. Satori walked closer to the action to confirm what he already thought. A girl he didn`t know was fighting for his gym clothes. Yumekui's hardened eyes lifted and fell automatically onto Satori. Immediately he let go of the bag and put an annoyed look on his face. Letting the girl stumble back but smile in victory. "Tsk, whatever. Keep this dirty thing." The boy tried to sound nonchalant but failed with the look he threw one last time at the pair before turning around. After he was gone the girl sighed in relief. The last tension was leaving her body before Satori spoke up and she went rigid again.
"That`s my bag." He said timidly, pointing with his long fingers toward her hands. Immediately she jerked around, her eyes wide. "Sorry! I wanted to bring it back but I wasn`t sure who it belonged to and Yumekui didn`t want to give it to me." She rapidly explained, putting a small smile on Satori's face which seemed to relax her. "Where did you find it?" "It was in the bin at the entrance." She explained while handing it over to the boy who had lost his smile again. The truth dawned on him, that this would happen more often now and Yumekui would always find new places to hide it. "I like your smile more." She spoke up once again, a frown now also gracing her lips. Satori took cautiously a step back. His brain going a mile a minute trying to figure out where the trap is. Was that girl in it as well? Is she only pretending to play nice to play an even sicker joke? Was she faking liking him, be his friend only to abandon him? Point with a finger at him, laughing uncontrollably while asking who would want to be the friend of a monster. He imagined a thousand scenarios but her eyes looked at him with so much concern that he couldn`t find the will to just run. He couldn`t even form words but she seemed to understand his inner turmoil. "Are you good at volleyball?" A shy nod followed from Satori before his eyes found the floor again. "Do you want to play before the next lesson starts?" His head jerked up, surprise flashing through his eyes while she just smiled. Satori eyed her suspiciously but she was unfazed, just waiting for him to confirm or deny. So he nodded making her beam at him even brighter before she took his hand and bounded with him over to the yard. "I`m (Y/N) (L/N) by the way. Nice to meet you." After that, there was always someone to hold him. They would play volleyball together and (Y/N) would look at him as if he was a miracle. She would always come to his birthday parties or as they got older, plan them herself. Their last year at Shiratorizawa came around and it was clear they all would go their separate ways. Moving to different cities or even countries and chasing their own dreams. Satori's birthday rolled around again. He was no longer filled with dread when he thought about that day because he knew there was always at least one person to remember it. When he came to class that morning a muffin was standing on his table and behind it, Semi and Ushiwaka were standing with neutral expressions. "Hey, guys. Is that for me?" Satori beamed, eyeing the little treat excitedly. "Of course, it's for you. Happy Birthday." Semi rolled his eyes at him but had a small smile on his lips. "I also wish you a pleasant birthday, Tendou." The redhead laughed thanking his ever-stoic friend as he gave him a little bag with presents their whole team had contributed to. Just as he was about to look at it another voice filled the classroom. The door flung open and loud panting was heard, followed by singing as Satori turned around. "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Satori. Happy Birthday to you!" Her face was bright red and her hair disheveled. It was the most beautiful sight he had seen all morning. "Thank you, Paradise." It wasn`t only gratefulness for her to remember his birthday but for her to stand by his side for all these years and save him from himself.

A Miserable Christmas
TW: Denial, Heart break, Rejection.
Characters: Ushijima Wakatoshi, Y/N and Tendou Satori.
"Ushijima, should we visit the Christmas tree infront of the train station during Christmas Eve? I'm not busy during that day so I guess it's a great chance for both of us to have a date!", you said to him through the phonecall.
"No, Y/N, sorry. But I don't think i can. I have something to do that day.", he said to you. "Oh...really? If you don't mind, I probably would send bentos to your house that day if you're busy. Well, maybe you could enjoy my meals although we are not together that day, right?", you tried to kill the intense feelings.
"I don't want to bother you during that day nor i want you to bother me.. Sorry, Y/N. I should hang up now. I don't want to waste my training period.", he said. You didn't have a chance to say goodbye because he hanged up right on time after he said that. You thought it is fine because Ushijima wants the best for his school and his team. You wouldn't feel like you're being abandoned but you should knows you're just in a denial.
During Christmas Eve, your parents called you to ask if you're celebrating that day with your boyfriend or not. Well, you have to lie by saying that he is at the convenience store buying some items to have dinner together. After you have some small chats with your parents, you dressed up warmly. You looked at the packed bentos you're planning to give to Ushijima and decided to give it to Tendou instead. Before you leave the house, you took Ushijima's scarf and wrapped it around your neck since the current temperature dropped drastically to -10°C. You even wore gloves that were given by Aran last Christmas.
You took the bento and walked out from your house. You ran to Tendou's house and forgotten about informing him about you're going to his place. When you're about to call him, your phone slipped from your hand. "Oops, noo!", you yelled. Your phone immediately hit the sloppy road and someone accidentally ran over it by using their bicycle. The person stopped and looked at your phone which is now buried in the snow. "Oh lord, Miss. I'm so sorry. I didn't meant to run over your phone", the person said while picking up your phone and wiped it by using his gloves. "No it's fine. As long as it's still functioning well..", you said to him. You took away your phone from him, worrying your phone might be broken or something but it's fine. He sighed a relief and asked if you're okay. "I'm okay. Thank you.", you said to him.
As you're about to walk away, the guy suddenly called you out again. "Wait, miss. Are you going anywhere whereby I can..send you?", he said. "No thank you. I'm just going to my friend's house.", you said to him again trying to refuse his offer.
"Aren't you Ushijima's girlfriend?", that person asked you. "I..am. Why are you asking that?", you turned around to look at him. "I am one of the trainee for the Volleyball team...I saw him dating with someone else's...infront of the train station.", that man revealed to you.
Oh, now. You thought why would you believed someone who you just met? You stormed off and leave him to go to Tendou's place. As you rings the bell, an unfamiliar girl opened the door. "Oh..", the girl said to you.
"Darling, who is that?",you heard Ushijima's voice from the house. "I guess it's Tendou's girlfriend!!", the girl yelled. Darling? What?
Tendou ran to the door after he saw your silhouette and he went to talk to you. "Y/N! You're here. Why are you here?..", he said. You tried not to cry but the feelings are hurting you so bad. "Well...I was planning to meet Ushi here since the Christmas tree is not that far from your house"., you said. Ushijima went out to see you with both of his widen eyes. "Wait...Y/N. You're here....", he said to you. He realised you have caught him so he tried to explain but you cut him off.
"Shut up, Ushi. I don't want to hear anything. One of your trainees did told me before you proved it. I swear to God, I'm tired of everything.", you said, with your tears trickling down your cheek while running away. Tendou looked at Ushijima standing like a stone and don't even chased you. Ushijima turned around and went back inside with his new girlfriend. They went out after 15 minutes, planning to go to the Christmas tree since they felt guilty.
After an hour of trying to make a decision alone home, Tendou ran out with his trench coat and went to the nearest place as he's trying to find you.
You walked to the train station after having a mental breakdown, hoping next Christmas will treat you better. You stand under the mistletoe and cried. You covered your red face with your hands looking at Ushijima kissing his new girl behind the tree. You tried to hold in your sobs but it's way too hurt.
Suddenly, a call reached in. It's from Tendou. "Y/N. I MIGHT BE LATE TO SAY THIS BUT STOP RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE.", you heard his breathing went faster and faster. He looked around trying to find you. Well, at least his house is not that far from the train station.
"Don't. Just leave me alone, Tendou.", you said to him. "I will not going to let you go away for the second time, dear. I will be with you this time.", he sounded so stern. You were way too speechless to hear his words.
"I-, Tendou, what type of nonsense you're saying?", you said to him.
"Turn around.", you heard his voice behind you.
You slowly turned around and he looked at you. Suddenly, he hugged you and whispered in your ear. "I have always be patient to be with you. Please.", he said to you. "What....do you mean?", you tried to make sure everything is real.
"Fuck, okay. I've always liked you for 3 years. I have always pretend to be your best friend although I'm yearning to be with you or being called as yours. I loved you so much that i got so mad knowing Ushijima is cheating on you. You ..will you be mine?", Tendou took out a rose from his trench coat's pocket and gave it to you.
You're surprised to see the confession but...
you're still ...not in the mood to say anything.
The snow slowly falling down just like your ability to love someone.
"I'm sorry, Tendou...I can't. I need some space and time to load everything.", you rejected him....right infront of the Christmas tree under the mistletoe. Well, both of you didn't get a kiss but instead a misery.

thinking about a royalty au where knight!tendou finds you trying to teach yourself how to dance in an empty ballroom in the middle of the night. a rumpled overskirt pulled on atop your nightdress to replicate the ballgown you'll be wearing in a fortnight's time--when the room will be filled with nobility and foreign royals who've answered your father's invitation.
he watches in silence as you try to lead yourself through the steps clumsily, humming something he's sure you think is the waltzes tune--the sweet sound echoing into the painfully still hall where you believe yourself to be without company. he doesn't mind that the tempo is off and the notes are wrong.
"you'll step on your partner's toes if you do it like that," he finally calls out into the quiet, and you nearly keel over from the fright--gripping your skirt in both hands and lifting its hem to your ankle like you're preparing to flee.
but you can't. not with the way he's leaning against the ballroom's towering double doors as he watches you, shrouded in shadow, blocking your only way out.
"what are you doing here?" you ask, breathless though you cannot blame it on the dancing.
tendou pushes himself off the wall and slowly makes his way across the room to you.
"shouldn't I be asking you that question, your highness? last i checked i'm not the one under any sort of curfew."
your nose scrunches up as he stalks closer, your mortification at being caught slowly staining around the edges with annoyance that it was him of all people.
"i'm surprised commander ushijima doesn't keep you on curfew. he's such a stickler for the rules," you mumble the words through a pout. tendou resists the urge to pinch the soft swell of your cheek as it puffs out indignantly.
"wakatoshi's only concerned with your safety, he acts in the same interest as the king."
your eyes flutter up in the wake of the young knight's words; too subtle to be an outright roll but evidence enough of your displeasure.
"my father's only interest is power," you say flatly, the words bitter even as they fall from lips so sweet.
tendou quirks a crimson brow, towering over you now as you fiddle with the creased material of your skirt. you'd obviously put it on yourself without the help of your lady's maid, a clandestine mission that no one was meant to know about, because he spots immediately how the waistline is crooked and part of your nightgown is puckering out at the small of your back like a duckling's tail.
"a legacy is power," he quips, his fingers twitching at his side near the hilt of his sword as he resists the urge to slip them under the waist of your skirt and tuck the errant puff of cotton into place at the base of your spine. "and as the only heir you are his legacy."
you huff--not as though you don't believe him, but that you're unhappy with the validity of his remark.
"so," tendou drags out the word, peering around the empty ballroom--lit by two small oil lamps you've set on either side of the floor a few paces apart. "what are you doing out of your chambers so late?"
he's fully aware of what you had been doing, you know it as well as he does, but he goads you into admitting it aloud.
"going to bed," you say stiffly, moving to step past him towards the doors.
he catches you by the crook of your elbow, and your eyes snap up to his. you meet his gaze with wide eyes, and then your look softens, lashes fluttering as your line of sight drops to where his fingers are lightly holding your sleeve.
"you never learned how to dance," tendou says gently, not asks, because he already knows the answer. his tone is no longer teasing.
your eyes flicker up to him shyly, and you shake your head no.
"evidently raising me with the skills befitting of a proper lady was not one of my father's interests," you admit quietly in reply.
the king had raised you--though the word seems unjustified given his indifference--alone, following the untimely death of your mother in your infancy. but your childhood memories are of governesses and the royal household's various other staff. of stablehands and scullery maids. of young knights training to one day join the royal guard.
"well," satori says, lifting his hand in offering.
you blink at him.
"are you looking to learn or not?" he asks, his hand still poised midair for you to accept.
"you don't know how to dance," you murmur, your brow pinching in the middle as you eye his outstretched hand skeptically.
"i can assure you i do," he laughs, and the sound bounces around the empty ballroom--getting lost in the far corners where the lamplight does not reach.
you cross your arms over your chest, turning up your nose.
"when did you learn something like that?"
he leans down towards you, bending at the waist to bring himself closer to your height. "i am the son of a nobleman, though you seem so intent to forget it."
you blink at him, flustered by his sudden nearness.
"well, if you're sure you don't need a lesson--" tendou withdraws, returning to his normal height and letting his hand drop.
you catch it before it can fall.
both of your eyes are fixed to the way you clutch his hand in yours--the warmth of your fingertips seeping through the thin material of his uniform gloves.
"please."
tendou's unfocused eyes flicker up to your face, where he sees you looking at him with an unexpected earnestness.
"please teach me."
and he does.
he starts off slow, teaching you the simplest of steps to the (proper) tempo. he hums a pared down tune to keep your movements in time, and you fall into step with him quickly and gracefully--though in truth, he expected no less.
he gets quickly swept up in the pleasure of leading you. of clasping your hand in his own. of resting his other hand upon your waist and feeling where your body dips and curves beneath his palm.
he's spinning you around the room before he can stop himself.
the two of you twirl until you're dizzy, and you're laughing at the top of your lungs as you try to hiccup out a slurred admonishment. you couldn't tell him to stop even if you wanted to through the laughter slipping from your lips.
but you don't want to. not even a little bit.
when finally you've lost any sense of up or down, of your lefts and rights, tendou stops the momentum of your turn with a tug--bringing your swaying body flush to his chest.
your head swims, your lungs ache. you fight to regain your bearings with your fingers twisted into the front of his jacket. the deep plum colour of his uniform looks more violet in the low light of the midnight ballroom. the starched material more yielding under your fingertips than you expect.
his cheeks are flushed. your touch is burning.
you look up at him with a softness in your eyes so devastating it almost brings him to his knees.
"satori," you whisper his name.
a plea.
your grip on his jacket tightens.
he smiles, but it's nothing like the carefree one that had stretched across his face while he'd been leading you in your dance. there's something melancholy even in the upward quirk of his lips.
he steps away.
"you're a natural, your highness," tendou says softly, and the words ache--pricking like thorns under his ribcage that accompany the bloom of his heart.
"tori," you murmur again, more desperately this time, reaching for him blindly.
he takes another step back, just beyond your grasp.
"i don't think i ever properly congratulated you, you know." he swallows over the taste of bile creeping up his throat.
your eyes beg him not to say any more. your hands are still half-outstretched, reaching for him.
"so congratulations,"--tendou's eyes are burning, an unpleasant heat along his waterline that threatens to rob him of his sight entirely--"i'm sure your betrothed will be pleased once the two of you are introduced at the engagement ball."
