BNHA SPOILERS, AS USUAL, KEEP MOVIN' 💗
Certain fans: The adults in MHA are terrible! They're using CHILDREN in their war! This is terrible for the story!
Certain fans: But Katsuki should stay dead tho. That's good for the story.
Horikoshi: Hey, so here are the consequences of the flawed society, and children being used by desperate adults in a war situation, and here's some Pro Heroes who are doing everything, including sacrificing themselves, to make sure that Katsuki, a child, survives the war.
Horikoshi: Also, here's how it affects Tenko/Tomura to see this, it's going to start a major reaction in him that will be integral to the next chapters and eventually, in IZuku rescuing him; as well as AFO pointing out the implications of using children/students to fight the war when Adults abandoned the fight.

Good day Dr. Tingle. I haven't read your stories, but I've known about you from afar in this website for a while. Your recent post about separating Ideas and Message is very similar to how I teach a class. I wanted to ask you, if you could share some of your Messages, in whichever structure/length/complexity you think about them before writing, to have some real world examples to show in class.
Personally I tend to simplify and shorten my messages as much as possible, like "everyone deserves forgiveness" for example, so that I can permeate it throughout the story, and so that anyone experiencing the story can come to a similarish conclusion.
I'm curious as to how your Messages look like inside your head, during the creative process. Not the refined versions used for marketing and sales and stuff.
Thank you!
sure buckaroo.
high concept idea of the book STRAIGHT was this: zombie apocalypse story but the rage only effects straight cis people (there is also a second high concept idea in there which is: what if zombie plague only happened one day a year? how would culture handle this politically and otherwise?)
so i had this idea that i thought was good, but before i can write it i think 'well what do i want to SAY about this? what am i FEELING?'
and i realized that i was a little torn about how to write this story because of the one day a year thing. when is it okay to fight back? can you hurt a zombie if it turns back into a person the next day? is that right or wrong? and WHEN is it right or wrong? what situations?
then i realized that with the metaphor of this story what i was really asking was something bigger: why is it up to the victims (in this case queer buckaroos) to be forced to make these decisions? marginalized groups have TWO kinds of violations done to them, the first is the obvious act of violation, but the second is that they are forced to use their time and mental space and emotional tolerance to learn how to HANDLE the first violation in an 'acceptable way'
so THAT became my message. if you want to know how i feel about these questions you can read STRAIGHT and find out.
CAMP DAMASCUS high concept idea was (SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT READ CAMP DAMASCUS STOP READING HERE) what if the church really DID decide the ends justify the means and instead of stopping demonic possession they were inflicting demonic possession to counter sinful acts.
but that is not the message of the book. that is just the idea. if i just had that idea i would not write it, but as things evolved i realized WHAT i wanted to say with this story
in this situation WHO is the force of 'evil'? would it be the demons? would it be the possessed? or would it be the SYSTEM AND MENTALITY that was creating this situation in the first place? so the book sets out the answer this question and express the conclusion that ive made for myself
i also noticed that many churches who are anti gay have a sort of infantilizing trot with how they handle their young buckaroos. this idea that gay feelings will just go away if they are ignored and that they can almost keep young queer buckaroos from ever aging into fully realized adults. obviously i think this is WRONG and so fighting back against this mentality became part of the message as well, and that informed most of the metaphor and symbolism in the book.
it is important to keep in mind that sometimes the message can change. as the book trots along i am LEARNING myself, working out these thoughts on the page and coming to a conclusion of my own. this is actually VERY true of BURY YOUR GAYS, which is probably most autobiographical thing i have written. i will save talking about that MESSAGE and HIGH CONCEPT for after book is out though
EDIT FOR CLARITY OF MY WAY:
when i say i write MESSAGE FIRST that does not mean i think of the message first in TIME (although that does happen sometimes) it means the message is the most important thing over plot or characters or anything like that (although those are important too). it means that i write with message as my north star, which is rare, but it is how i make art

Fem!reader Isekai in Lookism ?
Anon, so sorry I'm answering this exactly 3 months later. You're my last request from May and I was soooo close to deleting it because I have had exactly zero ideas. Then I got partly inspired by @honeyhotteok fic here and now I'm running on less than 3hrs sleep in work and it's your fault. Oh yeah, and I've completely twisted the ask as well. It's not even close. So all that wait was for nothing 🙇🏻‍♀️
Adventures of YOUR part time job in the Lookismverse
G/N. You work the graveyard shift in a convenience store. You meet bizarre characters on different nights. Part 2
There's something wrong with people your age these days.
Everyone seems to be either in a gang or up to some shady shit. Seriously what is going on. Is this all a big joke that only you aren't in on?
Just the other day you swear you saw a group of guys in boiler suits punch through some walls across the street. Like what the fuck? What did the wall ever do to you? And then someone apparently called Tabasco starts chanting something about Burn Knuckles and oh my fucking god it's 11pm please shut up.
Oh course you never said that, you still have some sense of self preservation.
And how does anyone even have the time for all this. Between school and this part time job, you barely have enough hours to sleep.
You miss Daniel, the coworker who you haven't seen for a good year but used to gossip into the early morning with. He always seemed a bit nervous and fidgety when you voiced your concerns and observations, but you just assumed he was a nervous and fidgety kinda guy.
There would have been some fun stories to share. Instead now you work the graveyard shift on your own.
.
.
Case in point, the guy standing in front of you looks like one bad conversation away from a mental breakdown.
And really you're not in the habit of checking out customers but he cuts a striking figure. Every exposed inch of skin besides his face inked, and (you silently ask for his forgiveness for the objectification) the biggest chest you have ever seen. What even is this guy eating? What is this guy injecting? Lifting?
The question is almost out of your mouth but then you see the look in his eyes and slam your lips shut.
Nevermind. You ring his purchases through and tell him to have a good night.
.
.
You're restocking the shelves when you notice a guy with a scar across his lip and nose, dripping blood from god knows where all over your freshly mopped floor.
Which is alarming in itself but come on man. Look at the floors. You're making it so fucking gross.
He notices you watching him, gives you an apologetic look and says he'll take care of it.
He makes a quick call and in comes 26 guys, one after the other and they line up in front of him.
You know it's exactly 26 because you counted all 26. And you've also watched all 26 pairs of dirty shoes trample over your previously nice clean floor.
The blood drippy guy asks politely for the mop and bucket and you think this must be some sort of prank because why the hell is this even necessary. 26 guys to share your one solitary mop and bucket and to clean a goddamn floor that you managed in 10 minutes.
"Get out." He blinks at you, taken aback by your tone. "Or I'm calling the police."
.
.
"You can bring your pups in!" You call out to the emo teen lurking outside.
Health and safety be damned because look how fucking cute these dogs are!
He hesitates but then the rain grows heavier and all three rush in.
You miss the suspicious glance he gives you, too fixated on how adorable the dogs are. You don't even mind their wet fur or muddy paws because look at these little babies!
And huh, this guy must really love them too with his, you squint, God? Dog? hoodie on. D'aww that's so stinking sweet.
.
.
Damnit, you knew these two would be trouble the moment they stepped foot into your store.
The tall blonde just gives off a distinct creepy vibe and the shorter one has his entire eyebrows shaved off.
Shaved. Off.
You couldn't help but stare when you put their purchases through and noticed some regrowth and stubble. Is this a trend you missed out on? Either way you're glad because there's no way you're shaving off your own eyebrows.
They converse in Japanese, not even saying a word to you. No thanks or anything, which is fine you suppose. But then they pay you in fucking yen.
They're out the door by the time you see the cash and fuck. Your boss is going to go apeshit when he finds out.
.
.
"What do you think, sweetheart?"
A new blonde guy addresses you tonight and for crying out loud, you just want a quiet shift.
What do you think of his white suit? With the garish LV logos? That it's tacky as fuck. That anyone with any sort of taste would never ever wear that. You keep your actual thoughts to yourself and instead just say it's fine.
That does nothing to subdue the blonde. He does stop talking to you though, and just mutters bitterly under his breath. You catch the words blind and tasteless.
His partner smirks at your response.
And isn't that a whole other kettle of fish because it's currently 2am and you're indoors and who the hell wears sunglasses right now. You think he's a douche of the highest calibre.
The smirk is wiped from his face when he asks for cigarettes and you ask for ID. He doesn't have it on him.
"No can do. No ID, no sale."
He leans aggressively into your space, and reveals his eyes peering over his sunglasses.
My god, what is up with this duo? One with the tacky suit, and this one with the ugly black contact lenses.
You don't budge and the guy is dragged out by the blonde cackling.
Ugh. That laugh gives you a headache for the rest of your shift.
.
.
You really wish customers would stop involving you in their conversation.
This one, who looks exactly like how you would imagine a SoundCloud rapper that has their mother following them and no one else, asks you to listen to his music.
He insists that he's good as the blonde girl rolls her eyes.
You listen to about 10 seconds and make up your mind.
He's wrong. He's very wrong. You want to suggest he gets checked out at the doctor because clearly his ears aren't working properly.
Instead, you mention you like Duke Pyeon, he's more your taste. Has he heard of him? It's the wrong thing to say though because this guy looks angrier than you've ever seen anyone.
"Don't start Vin, I've seen you listening to his music." The girl scoffs.
'Vin' shouts in indignation and storms off with his friend trailing closely behind.
.
.
"Can I help?" You ask with your customer service voice and customer service smile.
He has been standing in front of the hair dyes for a good ten minutes as his friend looks increasingly bored and you can't blame him.
"No thanks, I'm just browsing," he responds and you tell him you'll be just over there if he needs anything.
You kill some time playing on your phone, look up, and both of them are still in the exact same spot.
The one with the H on his neck looks about ready to tear his hair out.
"Come on bro, just pick one!"
"No Warren, this is important. I need it to suit my new aesthetics."
You shrug and return back to your kitty kat restaurant game.
.
.
"Cool glasses," you tell the guy walking around the store and he looks affronted at first before realising you're being sincere and gives you a small smile instead.
You wonder if you can pull off orange tinted glasses too or whether you'd just look like an idiot. It's probably the latter you decide when you ring up his energy drinks.
"I'm a boxer," he offers, as if you're judging the amount of caffeine he's going to slam down.
"Ok?"
"I need it for my training."
"Sure."
You've seen weirder purchases and weirder combinations. The people coming in looking frantic and buying a single plunger or pack of toilet paper never fails to make you chuckle.
To be honest the amount he's buying is a bit nuts, and you wonder if he's going to drink it all in one go. You probably wouldn't sleep for a year if it was you.
"Enjoy your training," you say, heaving and handing over the bag of 19 cans.
.
.
A mute blonde gestures at you
You try to use some sign language, but he looks at you as if you're crazy. At least you think he does but you can't see his eyes.
Somehow you're able to decipher he's lost his dogs. Four. Golden retrievers. And he asks if you have seen them.
(Huh. Do you have telepathy? Do you have the gift?)
You tell him no and he sprints out.
You spend the rest of your shift trying to move things with your newly discovered psychic powers.
Spoiler: you have zero powers. Zilch.
.
.
You think you might be having a stroke.
Because on what planet did this K-pop idol think the disguise would work. Cap and mask on but tufts of pink hair poking out and dressed completely in white.
It's like he's asking for attention and for people to ooh and aah over who that could be.
As he leaves, you shout that you can't wait for his next album. He turns around in complete shock that you recognised him, as if you solved the world's hardest puzzle.
It's a good job that DG has such a pretty face because what an idiot.
.
.
You hear two voices mention the words Daniel Park and your ears perk up, wondering if it's about your old colleague.
Nah. You're just being silly. It's not an uncommon name at all and too much of a coincidence.
"I haven't seen Daniel in ages! Have you heard from him, Zoe?"
"No," you see her friend shake her head from the corner of your eye.
The brown haired girl tilts her head in thought, "I wonder how Zack is doing too. I haven't seen him in so long."
"Ohhh~ you miss him!"
"O-of course I do! He's a friend!" She blushes bright red and you chuckle to yourself.
'Friend', sure.
For the rest of the shift, you reminisce about how you used to tiptoe around your feelings with your boyfriend, Taehoon, too.

Ooohhh so how do we think all the dynamics with dilf!luke would change if his kid was maybe ~10 years younger than you instead of your age (like maybe you met cuz you were their camp counselor or something and they got super attached to you)?
Omggg hiiiii! I got so excited when I saw it was you who sent in a request, I absolutely cherish all your ideas regarding this AU🩵🩵
Because I think it shows the subtle change in dynamics best I focused especially on a first encounter and then on how I imagine his child to cause further entanglement between him and you, since I think they'd definitely be the catalysator, especially in the beginning
• Luke, of course, remains a single dad in his late thirties to early forties and lives in a nice, cozy house with his child
• (if we assume they're about 10 years of age, he became a father at thirty)
• you, as a camp counselor/tutor/teacher/etc. don't know anything about his person, the picture you have in your mind consisting solely out of stories told by either his child or your co-workers
• but since you haven't met him yet, you're not particularly interested, not paying them much mind, as everything you know about the kid's guardians blurs together into a confusing mixture anyway
• of course this will change sooner or later, possibly when Mr. Skywalker comes to pick up his child and you see him for the first time from afar
• it's hard to miss him
• his consuming presence makes him stand out strongly from among the other parents gathering at the entrance, the dark, perfectly tailored suit he's wearing only accentuating the stark contrast
• maybe he just left work?
• even with so much distance between the two of you he strikes you as very handsome, though you can't help but feel glad you didn't run into him directly
• you wouldn't have been able to speak even a single word
• still you can't get him out of your mind and going forward you find yourself putting decidedly more effort into your looks
• just in case you see him around around again
• just in case should he take notice of you as well
• (you're only a little bit embarrassed by how quickly he put his spell on you)
• meanwhile his child, always happy to engage in conversation, seems to really love their dad, a smile blossoming on their little face whenever they talk about him
• especially as soon as they realize you're listening closely they can barely find another topic, making you endeavor to learn more about Mr. Skywalker a lot easier
• quickly you don't only know his first name but also when and if he's celebrating his birthday, what kinds of ice cream he likes best and which he doesn't like at all, details about his favorite knitted sweater and that he recently gifted them a rubber duck to take their baths with
• which is great, really, and you're not going to deny how very interesting all of this is
• but is he single????
• obviously you can't just ask a child whether their mum is in the picture or not and if their dad is currently dating someone
• luckily, or not so luckily, you're not the only one who's attention was caught by the tall, attractive man and you're able to catch some snippets of gossip among colleagues and the parents of other kids
• though gossip is all it is and soon you know why
• Mr. Skywalker is as cold as he is beautiful and impossible to draw near to
• it takes all of your courage to not flee the scene when one day his child decides to introduce you
• normally they let go of your hand as soon as they spot their father, quickly leaving you behind in their excitement as they jump into his arms
• today, however, they don't and you're starting to grow rather uneasy when they continue to drag you forward, towards a man already regarding you with raised eyebrows
• standing in front of him he's even more intimidating than from afar and you have to fight the need to lower your eyes when his gaze sweeps over you
• were it not for his child hanging on to your arm you would've left as fast as possible
• as it is though you're forced to stay
• bravely you endure the encounter consisting mostly of the child's happy blabbering and their father's polite but curt responses
• he's holding back, clearly not comfortable with your presence and studying you more and more intensely as time goes by
• he seems displeased and you have no idea why
• is your smile that terrible?
• did your greeting offend him in some way?
• does he not approve of how you're dressed?
• or about the way you interact with the children?
• you didn't think it possible but despite your initial feeling he eventually, slowly, starts to warm up to you over the next few months
• maybe due to the way his child obviously adores you?
• (yes absolutely, you're the only topic they can talk about at home, similarly to how they only talk about their father to you)
• true, he doesn't give you much to work with, the way he addresses you always stilted and his smile reserved, yet you couldn't be more relieved
• he doesn't seem to think you completely horrible and inadequate to take care of his child in his absence anymore!
• (also, as far as you know, none of your other colleagues have received a smile yet!)
• maybe you don't have a chance with him, this he made clear, but that's okay, there's joy to be found in a little harmless crush
• you dare to relax
• until his child invites you to their birthday party
• you had noticed, of course, how they followed you around like a duckling and how much you meant to them but still...
• wouldn't that mean to overstep a line?
• though when they present you a handmade birthday invite, smiling up at you so hopefully, you can't say no
• maybe it will make things easier for their parents (or hopefully just Mr. Skywalker?), you reason with yourself
• with you there they won't need to worry quite that much about a rambunctious crowd of little kids making a mess of their home
• you're good at your job and excell at pleasing even those hard to satisfy
• the longer you think about the upcoming event the more you feel your excitement grow
• you wonder if Mr. Skywalker is more relaxed in private
• as it turns out he's not
• and neither are you when you arrive and learn you are the only guest
• "I really like my friends", explains the child, "but I'd rather have you all to myself for once!"
• well
• there goes your plan to make a good impression by handling many kids on your own, while maybe sneaking a glance at Mr. Skywalker from time to time, who, in your head, sits somehwere in the distance, relaxing with a coffee
• of course, he does none of these things and instead never once leaves your vicinity, always lingering nearby to keep an eye on the two of you
• it's unnerving and continues to be so as you spend the day with activities his child planned for you
• at least there's no trace of a woman living here with them, which substantially lifts your mood despite the stern eyes you feel prickling in the back of your neck
• once it's time for you to go home you're exhausted
• to some extend you had fun, yes, but deep down you're ashamed
• how is anyone supposed to be taken seriously by an attractive older man while hosting a tea party for stuffed animals, rolling around in the grass and playing Mario Kart?
• does he even think you competent enough to do anything after watching his child chasing you with a water gun?
• your little friend insists on hugging you goodbye tightly
• "can we do this again soon? Pleaseee?", they whisper in your ear and you're inclined to agree were it not for the dark figure leaning against the wall a few steps away
• "you'll have to ask your daddy", you whisper back, hoping this will be a topic for another day and discussed without you
• once again things turn out differently though when they immediately throw themselves at their dad with great enthusiasm
• "DADDY CAN THEY PLEASE COME OVER AGAIN SOON?????"
• you don't know where to look
• what if Mr. Skywalker denys his child's request, here, right in front of you?
• he has the guts to do so, that much you were able to gather
• "we'll see about that, yes?"
• at least that's not a no, you tell yourself, yet you feel your eyes water in embarrassment
• forcing a smile you nevertheless thank him for his hospitality and receive a polite nod in return, before finally being allowed to flee the uncomfortable situation with burning cheeks, your heart beating painfully in your chest
• still holding back tears you've nearly reached the street when behind you the front door opens again causing you freeze
• half hoping, half fearing it's Mr. Skywalker you turn around, but instead spot the much smaller figure of his child against the backdrop of the lit interior
• you can't tell for sure but they seem to be grinning in mischievous delight before their little voice rings out clearly through the darkness
• "mY DADDY THINKS YOURE VERY PRETTY"
• for a second it's quiet
• then
• "but I'm not supposed to tell you because he says it's not proper"

Desert Hearts rewatch notes
Tumblr media
Desert Hearts (1985) is one of my favorite movies, but as with most of my favorites, I've gone quite a while without seeing it at times. I put it on the other day for the first time in years and took some screenshots in the hope that I might get some folks on here to give it a try that haven't, or at least bring back some memories for those who’ve seen it before. Then, when I sat down to post the images, I found I had more to say than I realized.
This was my first time watching this movie since I got into the whole BL/QL genre and I was curious to see if it would seem any different to me after a period of being more immersed in queer stories than usual. Mostly it swept me up into its own world, something this film is really good at. But I did find myself thinking at times about how aspects of it mapped onto QL tropes and more general romance tropes. I also couldn't help but see some parallels to the actual lived experiences of myself and people I know.
Queer romance tropes in Desert Hearts
Three tropes stood out at me that I've run into in the QL world, some of which I've seen in hetero romance settings as well.
Fish out of water - Vivian goes from her life as an academic in New York City to staying at a ranch outside Reno in pursuit of a "quick" divorce. (Having to spend six weeks in a strange place in order to get a divorce was "quick" by 1959 standards.) Helen Shaver, who played Vivian, points out in a featurette included with the Criterion version of the movie that Vivian has been living a very cerebral life, living inside her own head while cutting herself off from her body from the neck down. This radical change of scenery is exactly what she needs to be able to open up to something different.
There’s a similar dynamic at play in hetero fish-out-of-water romances. But I find this trope a lot more interesting in a queer context. Queer identities have a more complex relationship to difference. Among other things, characters who seem to be at home in the environment of the story often turn out to be alienated from it due to others’ perceptions of their sexuality.
Tumblr media
Age gap (with the younger person pursuing) - Cay, who is ten years Vivian's junior, is definitely the pursuer here. This isn't a specifically queer trope per se, but it can manifest in some specific ways in queer love stories.
LGBTQ+ identity can put people on unusual timelines in their lives. (This is an idea I first ran into in a book by Jack Halberstam in undergrad.) Sometimes this means being in a more "youthful" mode later in life than cishet people. Other times it means being a particular kind of late bloomer. And so on. So with life stages not conforming to typical expectations, what does it mean to love someone you have a significant age difference with?
In the case of Vivian and Cay, Vivian may be older, but Cay is poised to initiate her into practices and feelings that are pretty familiar for Cay and totally, mind-blowingly new to Vivian. This creates a kind of role reversal. At the same time, Cay has never felt this way about a partner before, so in many ways, their relationship is causing her to have some new and intense experiences as well.
Tumblr media
The thing where a character figures out their sexuality for the first time because their feelings toward a love interest act as a catalyst - This is certainly a trope that comes up in stories about queer romance, but it's more debatable whether it's a queer trope in the sense of a trope that is used by and resonates with queer people. I guess I'd say the theme comes up in different ways when a story is very geared toward the "straight gaze" and when it's more authentically queer. With the "straight gaze" version you get things like "gay for you." With more authentic versions, well, I don't think I've noticed many commonalities there. But I will always defend the use of this trope when it's done well in a way that centers queer experience, if only because falling for a specific person is exactly what forced me to come to terms with my own sexuality.
Tumblr media
Side note: Speaking of coming to terms with my sexuality, it really is an indication of how deeply in denial I was about my bisexuality in college that seeing this movie for a class didn't help me figure it out. I was deeply affected by it and fixated on it for weeks after seeing it, but it didn't get through the thick shell of obliviousness I had built up around myself.
Tumblr media
A connection to personal experience
There are quite a few ways that Desert Hearts resonates with my own experience but one really stood out to me this time around. [Spoilers ahead.] When Cay goes to see Vivian at the hotel where she’s staying after she leaves the ranch, she goes for a last-ditch, Hail Mary move—she takes off her clothes and climbs into Vivian’s bed. At first Vivian tells her to leave, but then she softens a bit, clearly interested but conflicted. Then this moment happens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I related to this so much. When I fell in love with a someone who was (at that time) presenting as a woman and it started to look like I might actually have a chance, I had so much anxiety about whether and how I could be intimate with my crush and whether I’d be able to “perform” decently. It turns out, as we learned when we compared notes sometime later, we had each had the same worry and we’d both bought an instructional book about lesbian sex (I think it may even have been the exact same book!).
I think part of my anxiety back then stemmed from the prospect of starting from scratch with a new set of practices and skills after being acclimated to sex with men. It made me feel like I was off balance. But when I actually did get close to my crush, another, much more pleasant side to my inexperience came up. It turned out that not having a familiar script for what to do made me much more present and gave me a sense of freedom. I remember thinking that it was like going from traveling down the same old route to exploring a new place that we had to write our own maps for. And that was pretty exhilarating.
Soon after that relationship happened, I read Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde. There was a passage where Lorde described something very similar from her own life. In this passage, she’s reflecting after her first sexual encounter with a woman after having a similar set of anxieties.
So this was what I had been so afraid of not doing properly. How ridiculous and far away those fears seemed now, as if loving were some task outside of myself, rather than simply reaching out and letting my own desire guide me. It was all so simple.
She’s so amazing at evoking these feelings, isnt she?
I can’t think of any other places I’ve seen this type of experience discussed besides these two. (I’m pretty sure others exist, but the fact that I haven’t come across them suggests there aren’t very many.) There are plenty of stories out there about hetero sex performance anxiety and its eventual resolution, but I think the queer version of this kind of learning has some big inherent differences that go way beyond the genders of partners being different. So it’s really nice to see it come up here, and be handled in such a sweet way.
In case you’re wondering, once Vivian is able to “let her own desire guide her,” in Lorde’s words, she also finds that her fears were misplaced. The resulting love scene is beautifully executed even by current standards. It’s even more remarkable to see it in a film that was released in 1985. It’s equally remarkable that this sex scene was shown in rather explicit detail.
Tumblr media
about, by, and/or for?
I'm also thinking about this movie in terms of the for/by/about queers typology that @wen-kexing-apologist came up with a while back. In my estimation, Desert Hearts belongs right in the center of WKA's Venn diagram. It's about queers, of course. I'd also place it in the "by queers" category. The director, Donna Deitch, who also co-wrote the screenplay, is an out lesbian. It's not clear whether the other co-screenwriter was queer. Her personal life was mysterious enough that it seems like a definite possibility. And the movie is based (somewhat loosely) on a novel by Jane Rule, who was also an out lesbian and whose work as a writer was very focused on lesbian characters.
Tumblr media
I'd also consider this movie to be "for queers." It was marketed to a wider audience, of course. But as I watched some of the bonus material and looked at writing about the movie, I saw a lot of evidence that Deitch made the film for her community and they embraced it.
Shaver had a really lovely story in the featurette I watched about this. I forget the exact nature of it, but she described how she attended some kind of event with Deitch and Charbonneau where the audience was full of queer women who gave them an incredibly long standing ovation that she found very moving and helped her see how impactful the film had been.
I’m also sure Deitch had queer viewers in mind (at least in part) when she set out to fill a glaring gap in Sapphic representation. In an interview with AfterEllen, Deitch said, “My goal was to make a lesbian love story that did not end in a bisexual love triangle or a suicide. Because that’s all that had been made at the time I set out to make Desert Hearts.” (Note: I’m not linking due to transphobia concerns regarding that site but folks should be able to find it easily if they look.)
In summary…
If you haven’t seen Desert Hearts yet I really can’t recommend it highly enough.

Fancy reading my original story? ;)
Tumblr media
Without revealing too much, it's a very character-driven, slow-burn(ish), bitter-sweet romance story centered around self-discovery, with music and movies playing a significant role in the background :)
If you want to give it a go, you can read The Higher We Soar here (I'm currently sharing it on Wattpad, as I, unfortunately, haven't found a better alternative...). The first three chapters are already published (and it always will be free :))
You can also read the prologue below ︎
Tumblr media
You should never expect too much from Tuesdays. They're like the middle children of the week—less demanding than Mondays, less depressing than Wednesdays, but definitely not as fun as Fridays. Tuesdays quietly go about their business, neither imposing nor exhilarating.
As usual, I didn't have high hopes for that particular Tuesday either. It was one of those days that seemed to slip from memory almost as soon as it happened, no matter how much I wracked my brain to recall it.
The weather? If someone had told me there was the worst snowstorm of the century on that day, I would have readily accepted their claim without a single question. If I had read somewhere that it was the hottest day of the year, I would have simply nodded in agreement. I couldn't even tell you whether I decided to take a bus, a tram, or maybe I just, quite merrily, took a walk to the studio.
All those details somehow simply left my mind, overshadowed by one seemingly insignificant, and quite short encounter. Nothing remained the same after that fateful, yet somehow very ordinary, casual Tuesday morning.
Like a clueless fool, I failed to sense the impending, monumental shift in my life—a weird, terrifying, passionate avalanche that, in retrospect, seemed glaringly obvious and impossible to miss from the beginning, no matter how hard you might try... Yet, I did.
Before I delve further, you should know that I've never really liked interns.
It's not a sentiment I'm particularly proud of, as I despise prejudice in any form. My dislike isn't rooted in any of my antisocial tendencies; in fact, I generally find it quite easy to connect with people, especially in the music industry.
But I never really liked interns.
Their enthusiasm often comes across as superficial, and I can't stand it when they ask what to do, only to neglect the tasks I give them. I don't don't like when they think they have it all, believing they are more knowledgeable than anyone else around the studio, despite never having composed a single piece of music in their lives. I don't like how, before I can even properly learn their names or discover their strengths, they vanish without a trace, leaving behind a mess of equipment they weren't supposed to touch in the first place.
I also don't like when interns assume I'm just one of them.
It's a frustrating realization, mainly because, begrudgingly, they have the right to do that. After all, most of them are just a tad younger than me. Who could blame them?
That seemed to be the case with most interns. Except for one notable exception.
It didn't take long for me to notice that one individual stood out from the rest of the pack. Slightly older than the typical interns we usually had, he possessed a remarkable ability to effortlessly connect with people of all ages and ranks—spanning from the youngest staff members to seasoned audio engineers and even the senior employees of our cleaning crew. He had this certain level of cheerfulness and genuine interest that set him apart, a stark contrast to the usual ennui seen among interns I knew.
Right. First things first, though.
The scene: Early spring. A typical Tuesday morning just a little past ten o'clock.
I found myself in the live room, brimming with anticipation to finally record the first version of my demo, or at least my initial idea for one. But as luck would have it, nothing seemed to align with my plans. True to form, the interns had left a chaotic mess in their wake, leaving me with the arduous task of tidying up before I could even begin to think about diving into my creative process.
I let out a sigh of frustration, futilely rummaging through the clutter in search of a balanced cable before all my inspiration gone to waste. And that's precisely when the blonde intern came into the room, flashing his straight, pearly white teeth at me.
"Oh, hey. Hand me that boom stand, eh?" I gestured towards the stand, hoping to deal the cleanup process faster.
Weirdly enough, he sauntered over to me joyfully, yet his hands were conspicuously empty. It took a few moments for the realization to dawn on me, and when I turned my head to him, there he was, meeting my gaze with a cheerful twinkle in his light brown eyes, smiling at me with the sincerity of a five-year-old child.
"Hello? The boom stand, please?" I reiterated, juggling a handful of cables, none of them the balanced one I desperately needed, and gesturing towards the frustratingly out-of-reach metal stand.
"Oh, you're talking about this thing!" he exclaimed, as if my words had just registered. With a sudden burst of energy, he hastily retrieved the boom stand and brought it over to me. "Here you go."
I shot him a skeptical look as he nonchalantly slipped his hands into the pockets of his well-worn cardigan—a piece of clothing that might have been deemed unwearable by most, yet it somehow suited him perfectly. In an oddly charming way, it emitted a subtle bohemian vibe, and I couldn't help but imagine it gracing the runway of some avant-garde fashion show, although my knowledge of fashion was rather limited.
"Do you want to tell me you didn't know what a boom stand is?" I dared to ask, raising an eyebrow in disbelief.
"Yeah, sorry..." he prudishly feigned embarrassment, though it was evident that he didn't feel particularly bad about it. "I had no clue what you were talking about."
I eyed him inquisitively, suspecting the worst but needing confirmation. "What about a shock mount? Can you pass me that, then?"
He tilted his head and subtly pursed his lips, as if I had switched to an entirely different, foreign language he couldn't comprehend. Utterly astonished, I pointed to the nearby, star-shaped object, and his eyes widened in realization.
"Oh... that's a shock mount? Well, I had no idea about that, either," he admitted, seemingly unfazed by his lack of knowledge, with no intention of handing me the item. In response, I spread my hands and cast him a puzzled, inquisitive look, to which he simply responded with another chuckle.
"Let me be honest with you, okay?" he shrugged once more, entirely at ease. "I know nothing about making music or any of this equipment..."
"Are you shitting me?" I blurted out, dropping the cables from my hands in sheer disbelief. "In that case, I have no idea why you're even here. How on earth did you manage to land this internship in a scoring studio?"
The smirk never left his lips, his eyes twinkling with joy, as if he wasn't even aware that I considered firing him during his very first week on the job. Well, I couldn't actually fire him. I could ask someone else to do it for me.
"What can I say?" he offered another smile, his eyes mirroring the same cheerfulness. Even his bohemian gray cardigan seemed uncharacteristically cheerful as he spoke. "I aced the job interview. Sophie, that gal who interviewed me, seemed to really like me. She was very sure I'd be a great fit here!"
"That gal?" I repeated with a scoff... and a smile. "You mean Sophie, the producer? One of the most important people around here? If not the most important one?"
He nodded as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "The very same."
"Right. Sophie and her desire to change the whole world for the better..." I remarked, my tone laced with sarcasm that he simply chose to ignore.
There. My proof.
That was the reason why I never really liked interns. He should have said something to make me believe he was taking it seriously, shouldn't he? He should have been embarrassed, he should have shown me his willingness to learn everything as quickly as possible, he should have tried to help me set everything up faster. But he didn't. Instead, he didn't take his eyes off me for a second, making me uncomfortable. It was as if looking at me like that was the most normal and ordinary thing in the world for him — as if it was our hundredth talk. No shyness. No awkwardness on his part. No guilt whatsoever.
"I don't know if I have time for your incompetence, then. I have things to do here, and they have to be done well," I finally stated, trying hard to maintain eye contact.
After all, I was supposed to be the more competent one, not him. Yet, inexplicably, I suddenly felt as though I were the intern, and he was the one showing me the ropes, not the other way around.
He hummed, faintly amused, as if I had cracked a half-hearted joke. "Come on... you only need to be more specific about what you want me to do. I can handle anything with clear instructions. I'm a very quick learner, you know?"
I found myself smiling as he began to lecture me on how to handle an intern like him. In fact, I burst into unexpected laughter—not at his expense, but because I couldn't believe his extraordinary gullibility.
No, gullibility was definitely not the right word. It was more like... certainty. An unwavering, absolute conviction that everything, always, would unfold just as he anticipated, with ease, enjoyment, and no difficulties whatsoever. There was no room for doubt. Moreover, it felt as if it wasn't because he wanted it to be that way, but because the universe, it seemed, had an uncanny knack for bending space and time just to make him smile.
"Let's see. Do you even know what I do here?" I asked, not with impatience anymore, but with genuine curiosity.
"Hey, I'm not that dense," he scoffed, then added a bit unsure, "You're a composer, right? Or am I mixing something up..."
I laughed and nodded in confirmation. His smile held a touch of embarrassment, a genuine one this time.
"You're not. I am a composer. So tell me one more thing, if you don't know anything about making music, why do you even want to work here?" I asked, finally bringing the shock mount closer and starting to set the microphone next to the piano.
He sighed, falling into deep thought for a brief moment before finally responding, "I think you're asking the wrong questions here. Why wouldn't I want to give it a try? It's fascinating. Besides, I'm a huge movie buff and you're making scores. I feel like I can rest my case here."
"Oh, yeah? Your love for movies? You think that's enough?"
"Uh-huh," he nodded, casually picking up the cables I dropped before, "Well, that would be more than enough if we were in an actual movie, wouldn't it?"
"Well, we're not, though," I chuckled, "We're not even in some poorly written novel. Life's quite different from the movies, especially if you know how they're made."
He hummed once more, a quiet laugh escaping his throat as he gave me another intrigued look.
"You think so? I think it all depends on your point of view..." he said with such conviction, as if everything really depended solely on that.
I shook my head in amusement and, unintentionally, found myself agreeing with him.
"Hey, I think I didn't catch your name before..." I said, a little troubled by the fact that despite Sophie repeating the names of all five interns for a week, I couldn't remember any of them.
"Oh, I'm Maddox. At your service!" he replied, his smile widening even further. "People usually call me Maddie, though."
"Really? Do they ever call you Madd?" I quipped. "Maybe that suits you better?"
A spark flickered in his eyes, then chuckled, "I've heard that one before... But sure. I can be Madd for you."
By then, I was laughing opelny, and I forgot about the mess around us.
It surprised me that he didn't ask for my name, and I decided not to give it away. I wasn't sure if he already knew it; he hadn't mentioned it even once that day. It seemed my name just... didn't matter to him back then. He struck me as someone very curious about the world and everything around him, yet for some reason, I didn't really seem to be one of those matters.
Like many things, it didn't bother me much, though.
After that Tuesday morning, marked by a string of mishaps that he effortlessly remedied with a perfect blend of enthusiasm, interest, and clever comments, a tad too clever for just an intern, we didn't teally talk for a few weeks.
Throughout the initial month of his three-month internship, our encounters were fleeting, lacking any real depth or substanc. Yet, I knew, there was an unspoken acknowledgment of each other's presence that hung in the air, like a perfectly fitting soundtrack playing in the background—barely noticeable, yet undeniably there.
I was busy with my projects that weren't going as well as I wanted them to. He, on the other hand, was busy surpassing almost all expectations, learning things at an astonishing pace, and effortlessly charming everyone he encountered. At least that's what I had heard from my co-workers, and from Sophie. He worked mainly under her, after all.
Every now and then though, I'd catch a glimpse of his eyes, squarely directed at me, particularly when I was on my way to the break room in search of my caffeine salvation. Sometimes, amidst the chaos of the studio, I'd hear his laughter, his rather melodic voice rising above the cacophony of others, as I struggled to maintain my focus on the stubborn music sheets in front of me. I quickly noticed he was quite the conversationalist, engaging in lively discussions with anyone willing to participate. Yet, our interactions rarely extended beyond a simple exchange of greetings, such as a casual 'hello' or 'how are you?'
That didn't bother me, either. Well, it didn't bother me at the beginning.
Everything always seems different at the beginning, doesn't it?

Two weeks earlier
“What do you mean, they canceled the competition?”
“Im telling you, they didn’t have enough cmpetitiors so now I’m done a month early.” Rhett was my older brother. He rode bulls professionally, and during the off season helped ur father and eldest brother Robert at the ranch.
Rhett and I were closer in age making us closer in our relationship. He was the one to ship me away from the butt fucks of nowhere. Said my talent was a waste in the city we grew up in. Because of him I got into Quantico and began to pursue my dream.
“Well shit, what are you gonna do now?”
“Mom found out and entered my name into the homecoming competition. Said it’s an easy win. So guess I'm going back.”
Mom always did sneaky things to get us back home. Said shes done with Dad and Robert antics. This was a classic move by Reese herself.
“Hows training going? You almost done?”
“I got a few months to go but its going good. I got to work this team this past week. Was able to locate and gather more intel for them.”
“Thats what I like to hear.”
I hummed to his response. I was sitting on the balcony of my apartment. The city was loud, in many ways than once. People yelling, sirens from every cancer with my head constantly going round in circles with thoughts.
“So you able to come up with me?”
“There it is.”
“Look you know Mom signed me up for a reason, she knows us.”
Mom did know us. I haven’t seen Rhett since last Christmas or have been able to get away to see him ride.
“I don’t know Rhett.”
“Come one, please. Do this for your favorite brother”
I laugh at his opinion.
“You think youre my favorite?”
“I definitely am.”
“That's presumptuous.”
“Well then, don’t go up for me–go up to see lover boy.”
I went silent thinking about that. Gator and I haven't seen each other since New Year. My schedule is the opposite of his. We talk every day still; we just haven't seen each other.
“What day are you gonna go up?”
“Probably Thursday. Friday is the competition.”
“Thursday, I have work till noon. But if you can't pick me up, no worries, I’ll drive up.”
“Sounds good. I'll see you later, Rue.”
“Bye, Rhett.” I hung up the phone. Immediately looking down at my lock screen. A picture of Gator and I last summer. I needed to go home, even for just a few days.

I finished work around 1250. Today, I was on the desk for a gruesome case. I was able to find some information, but they weren’t able to raid till it was signed off by a judge.
I began my walk from the office to my apartment.
On the way there, I wanted to grab a pick-me-up drink, stopping by my local coffee shop.
I walked in, and there were two people in front of me. I took this time to text Gator,
How’s it going?
I send and within seconds I see the three dots.
Dad scheduled me to be out on the field. It’s like he know’s
You're gonna be back soon.
I’m counting down the hours
I smiled at the last text. I look up and notice it was my turn to order.
“Hey Rumor, your usual?” I nodded and smiled. I began to pay when I heard the barista talk to me again. “You know, Rumor, there's a band playing at the Klatch this weekend; I have an in and was wondering if you’d be willing to go with me.”
The barista’s name was Vincent. He’s been working here since I moved. He went to college but dropped out, exclaiming he wasn’t gonna spend his life working away.
“Sorry Vince, I’m actually planning on going back home this weekend.”
“Yeah, to see that fake boyfriend of yours.”
I just pressed my lips into a thin line. Despite Vincent knowing about Gator, he has always given me shit about him. Saying it would just be better if I said I wasn’t interested in him rather than creating a fake boyfriend.
Rather than responding, I just grabbed my drink, gave a small smile, and walked out.
Yeah, it's definitely time to go back home.
And like an angel from heaven as I turn the corner to reach my apartment. There he was sticking out like a sore thumb. Dressed like a cowboy. Hat, boots, and one of his sponsors jacket on.
“Rhett!” I scream overwhelmed with emotions.
He was standing in front of my building. I run towards him, he engulfs me in a hug.
“Holy shit Rue. I have never seen you run that fast.”
“What, I can't miss my favorite brother?” I say.
“That is exactly what I like to hear.”
I laugh.
“Okay, let me shower, pack my bags, and then we can hit the road.”
Rhett nodded.
“Thank god I have time for a nap.”

Arriving at home was bittersweet. The ranch looks the same. But those who occupy it look older. Dad has a few more gray scattering his beard and Momma is aging like fine wine. Both of them cried when we got out of the car.
If it was up to them they would have us at the ranch year long, but they are the type of parents who don’t hold their kids back from their dreams. And for that, I am thankful.
“Honey, you haven't been eating,” Momma exclaimed. I roll my eyes at her.
“Mom I eat just fine.”
“Rob, go get your sister’s stuff! Rhett needs to rest up.”
“You owe me so many drinks tomorrow.” Robort says hugging me once more.
I laugh at thow we have resumed the hustle and bustle of the house like it once was all those years ago.
Rylee was now walking and had long hair pulled into braids. I got up to swoop her, having her grow into a fit of giggles.
“Aunty Ru-Ru!” She says while giggling.
I see Jane and rush to give her a hug. Jane was always the older sister I never had.
“Hell Rumor look at you!” She said taking me in. “Crime stopping does wonder for you.” I laugh at her comment. Jane and Robert were high school sweethearts. Jane was always around, she got me ready for my first date and did my makeup for all the special occasions. I set Rylee down and pulled Jane into another hug “Miss you sis.” I said.
“Don’t go soft on us killer.”
I look down to see her belly growing.
“Son of a bitch.” I say under my breath.
“Hey don't talk like that about your nephew.”
“Rumor, come eat!” Jane laughed hearing Momma call me. I walked over and sat down. Content with the peacefulness around me.
After dinner and the catching up conversations with the family, Momma sent us all to bed because of the competition tomorrow. Exclaiming we all needed to be on our best behavior, as it was the first time since graduation we would all be together. I laid in bed and reached that call button. I heard it ring a few times before I heard him.
“How is my girl doing back?”
“Momma made me eat two servings of food and made us all go to bed. So currently a little happy."
“Sounds like Reese.”
“Where you at?”
“An hour or so up north. Roy sent me up due to a call about some missing cattle. I’m just sitting here till six and then heading back.”
“He hates me.”
“That I can not dispute. He is even making sure that I go to the station before the competition tomorrow to ensure my papers are up to date.”
“I hate him”
I heard Gator snicker.
“You’ll see me before your brother is up to ride, I promise.”
“I miss you.”
“I’m pretty sure I miss you more.”
I took a deep breath, and Gator did the same.
“Not to be a pest but why didn’t you text me back earlier?”
“Some asshole I was dealing with tampered my mood.
Then Rhett was already at my apartment.”
I heard him hum.
“Anyone I need to deal with?”
“Not yet. But you can deal with your father for me.”
He laughs.
“Call me if you can't sleep. Ill be up, but get some rest.”
“I will. See you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow, love you.”
“Love you.”

Just Stuff About Wally's Voice Actor in my Story (I saw someone say they were starting to like them so I decided to write this)
I kinda dropped a bucket of paint on their head so here's my apology for their new concussion/other possible damage. Get well soon, Wally VA!
🎙️ If people haven't noticed, already, I have written it so that most characters are gender neutral and don't have names. That's because I like to give the reader as much imagination as they want when it comes to stories about pre-existing fandoms, plus characters like puppeteers, producers and such might be introduced into the cannon story. I figured it would make sense to keep them as kinda mysterious figures. So, everything in this post is just for my little story I have going on and how I imagine them. Two main things are that, in story, I am always going to try to keep them nameless and genderless, just because I feel that is the most interesting part of their mystery, but this post will be what I imagine when I write. If you want me to use this specific version of them, just let me know by referring to Wally's voice actor by the name I use in this post. OwO
🎙️ Some basic information is that Wally's voice actor is a man named Caesar Jones. He's in his late middle ages and has two kids. He has arthritis, although, the doctor's haven't figured out exactly what type it is, yet. His wife divorced and left the family on good terms, and they still keep in contact.
🎙️ He is very protective over Wally because they created him. He is scared that, once someone else is puppeteering Wally and (eventually) voicing him, the character of Wally will change and become unrecognizable to him. No one knows Wally better than his creator. At least, that's what Caesar thinks. It's actually the only reason why he doesn't like the reader in the story.
🎙️ He is a smoker, but makes sure to always go outside to smoke. Even when he is in an area that allows him to smoke inside, he goes outside. He has even gone outside in borderline blizzard conditions. Ever since he had his two kids, he makes sure to keep them safe. What started the habit of him going outside was when one of his kids started coughing from the smoke.
🎙️ He uses a wheelchair when at home. He doesn't need it all the time, but he uses it at home so he can give his knees and ankles a break after work. He bought it with his own money, as a "self-birthday-gift", AKA he bought himself a gift for his birthday. He also believes it will help slow down any joint damage he might have from his arthritis. A part of the reason for the contract the boss made between Caesar and the reader, the one that keeps them both updated on the other's health in emergencies, is that Caesar will stay home on days where his pain is especially bad. So, in those cases, he sometimes has the reader visit his house to rehearse for episode recordings.
🎙️ He doesn't know it, but he actually has a mixture of both arthritis and carpal tunnel in both wrists. He got diagnosed with arthritis and just assumes that the numbness and carpal tunnel symptoms are from the arthritis.
🎙️ Some aspects of himself have made it into Wally. For one, both Wally and Caesar have a deep desire to preserve the wonder and imagination of children. Caesar believes that wonder is what makes a person special, because it fuels the imagination. Nobody really imagines things the same way, right? Wally believes that, too.
🎙️ Caesar is interested in cults, especially religious ones. He, himself, is religious. He isn't extremely so, only really doing the bare minimum of his religion's practices, which is exactly why these cults intrigue him. He couldn't imagine bringing any of his beliefs to such a severe degree. The thought scares him. Wally, in a way, also has that trait. Except Wally is more like a little cultist, himself! With no knowledge on what a 'religion' is, though, he has unknowingly turned to you as the core of his belief. All of the obsessive, worshipping, and overall cult like behavior that Caesar researched about went straight into Wally.
🎙️ He is actually a very progressive person for his time. He doesn't care what gender or sexuality identify as, nor does he care about your racial background. As long as you respect him, he will respect you. If you interest him and he wants to get to know you better, he will approach and talk to you. It is all the same to him. People are people.
🎙️ He's a hard cookie to kill, so he probably survived that paint can. I always imagined that it hit the back of his head, which is where the part of the brain that controls sight is. He probably has some damage there, which can cause hallucinations.

BY THE WAY!!!! I managed to edit some of the pictures that I placed for Calvary's suit. I changed the colors so that you could have a clearer visualization. LOTS OF LOVE! (Creds to original artist)
I did want to change something in the story, which was that YN has always worn the B suit, even now. You'll see why in this chapter.
The only difference is that the headpieces are exchanged.

——————————————-
You had managed to convince Diana to stay a few more days, trying to avoid the inevitable. You remember the look she had given you, perplexed by your request, but she agreed nonetheless. As of today, you had spent a big portion of it sparring with Artemis and soon you were going to meet up with Cassie to go on a swim. When you were walking back to your room after the swim, you bumped into Diana. "Just who I was looking for. You are needed in Gotham and you must leave as soon as possible. Bruce found something about the case and said your presence there was required." she said and saw the hesitation in your eyes. "I know you are troubled about this Tamaranian girl, but you know what I taught you" and you nod and mutter, "Responsibility and duty before selfishness" and Diana nods and takes your face in her hands "You have to go and face it once in for all. My dove, it will be fine. The gala will be in two weeks and we will meet again. I know this matter of your heart plagues you greatly and it pains me to see you so down, but you have a duty to Gotham and a promise to fulfill to Batman. Once the case is solved, if the troubles are too unbearable, you can always come back to New York with me and stay for some time." You nod and sigh. She kisses your head and lets you go into your room, change and pack.
You are about to board Diana's invisible jet when she stops you, "Wear your new armor" she says. You had always worn the full suit that you had ever since you were a kid, with the exception of the upgrades that you would add throughout the years. But, on this visit, Hippolyta insisted on gifting you a new suit. (You didn't know that Diana had mentioned your doubts about your status as an Amazon Princess and she would not have it. Her granddaughter SHOULD NEVER question her place in their family. She was an Amazon through and through, no space for doubts.) She had used the excuse that you were of age and it was unacceptable that you looked more like a bat than a wonder. You were a princess for heaven's sake, look like one. You had accepted it gratefully and wore it all throughout your stay. You had to admit, YOU LOOKED GOOD IN IT. You look at Diana questionably. She smirks and answers your silent question, "An Amazon always looks best with her armor." You quickly understand what she meant. Diana had made it her personal mission to make sure you understood that you weren't inferior that a Tamaranian princess and that you hold just enough worth as her. You nod with a smile and change quickly.
Once you are back, Artemis, Hippolyta, Cassie, and Diana are there to see you go. They all smile as you walk towards them, ready to say your goodbyes. You hug each one of them, leaving Diana for last. You notice she is holding something behind her back and once you look at her questionably, she holds her hands out and you gasp. A headpiece similar to the one she wears is presented to you. She places it on your head and kisses your forehead, "A worthy woman through and through, always enough for anything she puts her mind and heart to" and hugs you. You get on the jet smiling, happy with the support you always get from your girls, and begin to pilot it towards Gotham.
As they watch the jet leave, Hippolyta turns to her daughter displeased, "All her self-worth torn because of a man, Diana?" and Diana turned to her surprised. Hippolyta looks at her and laughs, "What? I am your mother. The same way Yn can't hide anything from you, YOU can't hide anything from me." and Diana chuckles "She loves him mother, and he loves her. He just needs a push to recognize it." Hippolyta humps in dissaprovement, "Well, he better be worth it! My grandchild deserves nothing but the best!" and Diana laughs in agreement with her mother. You truly do deserve the best.
You arrived in New York and landed on the roof of your mother's penthouse. You head towards the Zeta tube and stand before it nervous hell of what you will see on the other side. Well, Yn...its now or never.
These last few weeks had been torture for Damian, his mission had been fucking impossible. Dick left and Yn was there, but then Yn left and Dick came back WITH SOMEONE ELSE. Oh, Damian was not pleased. How dare Dick fuck up his plan. How could he?!?!?!? AND WHERE IN BATMAN'S GOOD GRACES WAS YN?!?!?! A deep scowl could be seen constantly on Damian's face, worst than the one he usually had. When Dick arrived with Kory announcing that they were back together, everyone tensed up. Tim and Duke exchanged worried glances. The color drained from Barbara's face. Jason cursed, and Stephanie's jaw dropped. It took Cass closing her mouth for her to snap out of it. They all mustered up fake (but surprisingly convincing) cheers and congratulations for them, yet as soon as Dick left, pulling Kory to his room, hell broke loose.
"I THOUGHT SHIT WAS GOOD WITH YN" screamed Steph
"We were almost there..." said Duke
"I knew something like this would happen cause of Kory's urgency to have Dick back with the Titans" muttered Jason
"And his urgency to leave" agreed Tim
"I have to warn Yn, she's supposed to fly here tomorrow" said Barbara hurridly and left to call YN
"he is running away from how he feels" seethed Damian and everyone stopped. No one had thought about that. "The coward slips back to comfortable because he won't face them!" continued Damian highly displeased and everyone sighed. These were going to be some tiresome weeks. And exhausting they were. They had missed Yn more than ever. Dick was unbearable, flaunting his relationship, excessive PDA and flirting, always mentioning Kory, they were sick of it. They decided to host another meeting in honor of the new...obstacle....
"Yn and Kory have never met face to face" muttered Barbara and everyone looked at her shocked. "WHAT?!" let out half of them and Barbara nodded, "They have heard of each other but never met face to face. With Kory always in Jump City and Yn alternating between NYC and Gotham, their paths never crossed. So, brace yourselves. I don't even know how shit will go down." Oh, what a mess did they find themsleves in.
Everyone had slipped into a routine of being cordial and kind to Kory, they weren't going to treat the girl bad just because they had an obvious bias, please, they weren't savages. Everyone except Damian. His bias was clear. Plus his lack of people skills came to play. He would answer drily, sometimes only giving a nod to her. He would only spend time with Dick if he was alone. He was not pleased because his mission was ALMOST there and now backtracked by a lot. He was anxious for Yn's return. It was definitely because of his mission and not because he had started to develop a similar attachment to the one he had with Dick with her. Obviously NOT. He did NOT start seeing her as a sister, that is preposterous to even assume. Safe to say, Damian was grumpier than normal. When his father sent a message to Diana, asking Yn to come back urgently, he had been relieved. She would be back.
Now, standing next to his siblings and Kory, they were discussing their next move. They had gotten sight of the poison in one of Penguin's clubs and noticed this could possibly be a bigger threat than they had thought. Not only were Riddler and Scarecrow involved, but now Penguin was added to the mix. They needed to work fast to gain the upper hand and it was proving difficult with a certain scientist gone. They were all suggesting strategies on what to do next and Kory would try to give her input every once in a while. At first, it didn't bother anyone, but then they started to get angsty. It was a common unspoken law amongst heroes that when working in Gotham, ALWAYS LET THE BATS LEAD AND JUST FOLLOW. As a matter of fact, it was known that when working in a city that's not yours, let the residents have the lead and give input when asked. After all, who knew their villains better than the locals. They understood she was trying to be helpful but it was interrupting more than actually helpful. They were holding back for the sake of not being mean to Dick's partner and their guest (Alfred always taught them good hosting manners). Yet, unlike the others, Damian's patience had run out. "Would you quit it" he said drily after another one of Kory's (unhelpful) inputs. Kory's eyes widened and Bruce and Dick went to reprimand him, but he stood his ground, "These are not your criminals, so I would find it most helpful if you remained quiet." They had all widened their eyes. Dick once again turned to scold him, but again, Damian was having none of it. "Grayson, she is a guest. Not a regular, I think we can manage just fine" Just as Dick went to scold him once again the sound of someone arriving by the Zeta Tuve was heard.

The opposition to rewrites in the FNDM is just so goddamn weird to me, given that one of the cornerstones of another fandom I'm in is a rewrite of a canon storyline that had some really cool ideas but dogshit execution. I see people saying that the rewriters are arrogant for thinking that they can do RWBY better than the official team, but no, in my experience even if they are arrogant it's equally possible that they're right. Official doesn't mean "The Best" or even "Good", just official.
Exactly. Ultimately it shouldn't even matter whether rewrites are "good" or not because
a) That's a highly subjective interpretation no one will ever agree on
b) They're written by amateurs for free as a hobby - with "amateur" meaning someone who does not produce RWBY writing in a professional capacity, not someone who is automatically "bad" at the art - and thus rewrites would be at huge disadvantage even if we did want to judge their quality
and c) That's just what fanfiction is?? Transformation??? The writer's motivation is inconsequential. Whether they're producing this because they think they can craft a better story than canon, or whether they simply want a creative means of celebrating it, the end result is still the same: a new, unofficial RWBY product that readers will inevitably compare to the original, favorably or otherwise
So yeah, it's wild to me. I've literally never seen another fandom so anti-rewrite. It's usually the opposite - as you say, a cornerstone of fan engagement - where fans, both jokingly and not, talk about how sometimes fic is a love letter and sometimes it's a "FUCK YOU STRONGLY WORDED TELEGRAM TO FOLLOW." Despite RWBY appearing unique at first glance (from my perspective, anyway) I wonder if part of this is due to larger fandom trends? Meaning, RWBY is comparatively young as fandoms go and I've noticed in recent years a prioritization of canon that hasn't been around before, particularly when it comes to shipping. Some of that is good imo (like the push for queer canonization) and some of it is just downright odd (what do you mean I'm not "allowed" to ship them just because they haven't spoken to each on screen? Since when is THAT a requirement?). Though RWBY is definitely an extreme case, there seems to be this generalized move from, "This is our canon and it's great, or maybe it sucks, but either way it's a spring board for all of THESE cool things" to "This is our canon and it is scared. It is perfect, flaws and all. If you're going to add to it I need a detailed proposal for how this fits into the established world, encapsulates the original author's vision, and maintains characterization even though I'm too young to know what OOC stands for." Certainly in RWBY's case, I wonder if part of it stems from the rise in social media and, as a result, fans "personal" relationships with the actors and writers. When you're seeing a creator's tweets all day and feeling like they're your online friend, you might be less inclined to "mess with" their work; as opposed to seeing an actor/writer at a con once a year, going home, recognizing that they're a complete stranger outside of any fantasies, and then getting on with playing in their sandbox because why wouldn't you? They're never going to know. This is the age of fans sending their fic to actors to read aloud and tweeting at writers that such-and-such had this to say about the show. Though this was done in a cool and positive light, I have legit had a meta of mine tweeted at a OFMD actor and, if the like he gave is any indication, he read it... which is a weird thing to think about considering he was not the audience I had in mind while crafting it. Those kinds of interactions has got to have some kind of impact on fans' perception of what they can and cannot do with the material...
Anyway, today's PSA is that if you want to do a rewrite of any story - yes, even RWBY! - you are absolutely allowed to do that regardless of how "good" it supposedly is. Go forth and get creative. Get messy. Do whatever the hell you want and if someone in the fandom tries to make you feel bad about that, tell me and I'll manifest a Lego in their shoe.
After all, it's not like the entirety of RWBY is built on transforming others' stories or anything :)

The first thing that stands out to me about this scene is that there are no adults around. the oldest person there must be in their late teens.
I feel like there might be something in the Kenarian children's main clothing color being yellow and one of Ferrix's main colors also being yellow.
Not maarva ripping into Cassian and she's not even in the room. Be relying all of this information though shows the fact that Cassian is a very central part of their community because this is three different people who have come to him and his mother's home specifically to look after/take care of them.
Bee needing a lot of power to lie is an interesting character quirk for him. I wonder where be source the bandages from and what the reaction would have been if he walked into the town and people saw the wounds on his fists.
"I can't come with you?" Precious
Just serious also has a good balance of background music because there haven't been any times where silence would have conveyed more than music would have and vice versa. Not every scene needs to be supported by an orchestra.
Yet another amazing environment in Andor. Ask Cassie and walks through his home we see how lived in it is, how many people are part of building the community, how populated the general area is, etc. Visually it's very grounded.
I wonder why one set of gloves was missing.
Yet another good display of dialogue here because rather than simply have cassian say "you need to lie for me, here's the story" he simply dives right in, and Brasso understands. But Cassian missed a spot; he's accounting for his alibi, but he's not accounting for the wound on his face, so Brasso feels that in by lying and saying Cassian fell.
Maarva might be too sick to notice how cold it is :(
Now that I think about it syril karn's fashion choices are constantly made a point throughout the series. What he tries to appear as versus what he actually is I think is Central to his character as a burgeoning fascist. He subtly went against regulation by modifying his uniform, but he'll go out of his way to follow regulation by pursuing Cassian even though he was explicitly told not to.
"a human with dark features" it's racial!
"let's make sure it's on the far side of the plaza. Let's get it out of the leisure zone." I guess it would have been difficult to garner sympathy for or support for a murder case of two cops if it looks like the two cops were killed over sex lol. This man that Karn is speaking too shows that he already has a lot more experience than Karn does and the fact that he was able to pull three pieces out of information out of a detailed but still lacking report (illegal brothel, illegal booze, neither of which they were meant to have there). Something something cop cover-ups (not that I'm upset about this one). I loved that scene.
Cassian and Bix find it so difficult to have a conversation.
EDIT: whoops this was from the start of my andor rewatch AGES ago

another part of the lymond chronicles's approach to sexuality/queerness that i'm fascinated by is how lymond reacts (or how he doesn't react) to the attraction men feel for him. and the attraction he feels for men, which is much harder to perceive, i think.
you could say the lack of homosexual romance in the series is due to the fact that 1. it was written in the 60s and 2. dorothy dunnett was an heterosexual woman, and that's probably all there is to it. but also i think it makes sense for lymond as a character?
we see throughout the series how lymond struggles to let people close to him because he wants to protect them, and his loved ones usually get hurt. but there's another reason, and it's that there's a power imbalance between himself and the men he commands. so, as much as those men come to care for him, there's a self-imposed barrier that lymond always keeps up in his every interaction with them. not every man in the series is under his command, tho. lymond thinks in checkmate:
In the wreck had died Diccon Chancellor the English navigator, who had been more than half-way towards becoming the friend he had never quite managed to find and keep, in terms of equality, except sometimes, in passing, with women.
so it makes sense if lymond wants to avoid, or even doesn't allow himself to have romantic feelings for the men around him, but he can have that deeper, more intimate connection with women, because he sees them as his equals.
jerott is a partial exception to the rule because, i think, they were childhood friends (or 'boyhood acquaintances' as jerott himself puts it. i love him so much) first, before jerott was under lymond's command. they were the same age and soldiers in the same army, and that created a connection before lymond had power over him, and so he shows jerott a more intimate part of himself he usually keeps hidden from most people. and he's open about his feelings to him on more than one occasion, too, which is rare.
and there's another male character who isn't under lymond's command and who is attracted to him, which is míkál. lymond notices míkál's beauty, and is very clearly flattered by míkál interest for him. the fact that lymond didn't want to have sex with him never was about lymond's lack of attraction to men, or that he doesn't have sex with men if he doesn't have a reason to do it, in my opinion. i always thought it was because of what happened with the aga, and because lymond just wasn't in the mood to have sex with anyone in that journey.
(yet another male character who doesn't work for lymond and is attracted to him is robin stewart and lymond was seconds away from letting that man suck him off, so you know. there's that lol)
i think i saw someone say that dorothy said lymond "would have chosen heterosexuality for himself" (paraphrasing and i haven't seen the actual quote tho!), and i don't exactly remember the context but i think it was something like, if during his time as a galley slave lymond hadn't been approached by or even sexually abused by men, he wouldn't have known about the attraction they can feel for him, and therefore wouldn't have had sex with men as a tool to get what he wants. i don't exactly know if that's what she was trying to say... and though i think that's interesting, i also don't really care? i admire and respect dunnett and i love seeing her thoughts about the story and characters she wrote, but i will always prioritize my own interpretation of the events of the series over whatever she said. so:
tl;dr: imo the lack of romantic homosexual love from lymond in the series could be because he distances himself from the men who are attracted to or have feelings for him because he can't ignore the power imbalance between himself and those men. and also, as is always the case with lymond: sexual trauma

Please may I have a Fairy tail scenario Platonic and angst and comfort because it is between parents and their child and the pairing between Juvia Lockser and Gray Fullbuster is Gruvia and they are married and adults. Juvia and Gray could clearly see that something was affecting you (their son age 5 *he is the most sweetest kid known to man and everyone and he is just starting to learn ice magic) and the lack of appetite for Juvia's cooking and your older brother Greige Fullbuster age 10 noticed that something was clearly up with you as well..you were a sweet kid but seeing you this down..clearly broke their hearts (the Gruvia couple and your brother and Fairy tail noticed that something was clearly up). Gray and Juvia made an excuse to talk to you alone just to divert Greige to leaving the room just in case if it was a private conversation..you were rather reluctant to open up about was wrong when you were gently picked up by your mum and you saw the concerned look on Gray's face..you were reluctant but you then..told your parents that..your close friend from school passed away from a illness yesterday and the teacher told your class and you guess that you should feel relived right? *you were clutching your toy rabbit (Lucy got you the rabbit for your fifth birthday) closer to you* That your friend wasn't in any pain when he passed away in his sleep..Gray promised to listen when he just told you to talk while your mother was already listening to you clearly knowing that you wanted to talk to someone *you faltered again* after a while though, you start talking, reluctantly, your voice faltering and stumbling on each syllable as you choose your words..it was a rough start but it soon steadies and along with it..to keep company the stories and the memories you are so fond of..are the tears *the rain outside started to fall the moment that you started to cry*...like any parent..the Gruvia couple hated seeing their children cry..it was generally heartbreaking.

You're behavior change had not gone unnoticed by your parents. You thought you were putting on a brave face. But your actions betrayed that and Gray and Juvia knew something was wrong.
At first Gray and Juvia thought that you would come to speak with one of them about what has been bothering you. But time passed and you still didn't say anything. Their ray of sunshine their beautiful son was hurting and they were hurting as well.
Juvia's cooking was something that she knew you were always looking forward to and enjoyed. However at dinner tonight you've barely touched anything on your plate. Picking and playing with your food with a sad expression.
Gray and Juvia had tried to make conversation with you but you didn't seem interested. All you wanted was to be alone and you didn't want your parents to see you in such a sad state. "I'm not feeling all that hungry. I'm going to go to bed goodnight Mommy good night Daddy."
You spoke pushing your plate away from you and getting up from your chair. You walked to your bedroom and your parents could tell you weren't feeling the best. Gray and Juvia shared a look knowing they couldn't let this go on any longer.
Juvia and Gray both made their way up to your bedroom. Juvia knocked on the door as she spoke. "Sweetheart, can me and your father come in?"
A weak and soft response could be heard through the door as you replied. "Yes..." With permission, both Gray and Juvia entered your bedroom. You were lying on your side facing away from them as they entered the room.
Juvia sat down on the bed next to you putting her hand on your arm for comfort. "Sweetheart you haven't been acting like yourself lately. You've had me and your father worried sick. Please tell us what's wrong?"
You sat up from your bed and hugged Juvia and she wrapped her arms around you. Gray also sat on the bed putting his hand on your head. You couldn't hold it in anymore and the tears just started to flow out like waterfalls.
"It's okay sweetheart we're here cry for as long as you need," Juvia spoke as she rubbed her hand up and down your back. Your grip on Juvia tightened as you cried even more.
Juvia had picked up the toy bunny that Lucy had gotten you for your fifth birthday and gave it to you. Holding the bunny you now started to calm down and started to cry less. "Sweetheart if you're ready please tell us what's been bothering you."
Juvia spoke with a concerned look on her face. After finally finding the words you spoke. "My best friend...my best friend has passed away."
You spoke as you held your toy bunny and rested your head on Juvia's lap. "Oh, honey..." Juvia spoke putting her hand on your head to comfort you.
Silent tears fell from your eyes and your father Gray spoke to you. "It's okay to feel sadness like this and to show emotion. Don't feel the need to hide it if something is bothering you talk to one of we're here for you.
I'm sure in their final moments your friend was happy they were happy they met you and everyone in their life. So don't worry even in their final moments they passed on happily and without pain."
With his words, Gray wrapped you and Juvia into a hug. You smiled as happy memories of you and your friend filled your mind. "Yea you're right Daddy I'm sure they were happy."

This is a Little More Than Just Spidey-Sense 🕷
Okay, so I've made up my mind. After being so inspired yesterday by reading multiple of Miguel O' Hara fics by @oharahive, I'm planning to make a multiverse branch of my own. With that being said, lets take my first 2 blurbs: For Research Only Purposes and The Gag To Be as excerpts leading up to this story here. My story-telling is rusty because I haven't done much research to fully get a good plot of my own. But lets just say I can give juicy drama when needed lol.
Please enjoy this variant of mine. (Sorry I have to add the Loki to this). Take this chapter as the prologue to start it all.
Tumblr media
There's really no warnings for this one. If you are reading this and feel lost, read The Gag To Be. Thanks in all for taking your time to read this as well, let me know how you feel 💗.
Pairing: Miguel x Fem!reader
Word Count: 875
Miguel sat in concentrated wonder at the wide projected screen before him, his eyebrows furrowed between the bridge of his glasses. His eyes try to puzzle the piece missing in the scene, as the video stops to its end. Miguel bites the pencil within his hand, “Lyla replay it again.” he instructs rewatching the outburst you released within the conference room. Starting from the moment you flipped the table; he swivels his chair constantly amazed at the power to your fighting. What kind of spider bitten you to have these noticeable physical changes followed by quick calculated field of motion? Jessica Drew sat behind him with folded arms. “She could become a serious danger if things get any more tense.” she warns with immense concern, “Her webs are black like Venom’s but she’s clear of any alien symbiote intentions. Unless I become a grudge, then maybe she is to be Venom.”.
“Jessica she was bitten at the age of 16 so any signs of alien are definitely out of the equation. STOP!” Miguel exclaims making the scene pause and Jessica jump from the sudden yell. He gets off his chair and places the pencil to rest on his ear, you standing at the middle of the screen with your face just clear enough to assess. “Lyla zoom into her face by 4 frames, try to define as much as possible.”
“That’s gonna cost ya’ a ticket to CineVerse because this new movie abo-.” Lyla elates, her projection disappearing and reappearing around him.
“Lyla this is serious than any rom-com you’re about to tell me. Zoom the picture.” Miguel snaps trying to catch the bouncing projection flitting around him.
“Not until you cough up the dough Miggy.” she quips back, blowing raspberries at his face before dissipating as his hand tries to catch her with more annoyed intent.
“Miggy?” Jessica says with a smile, her eyebrow cocking to the new nickname. Miguel blushes intensely as he curses his big brain for creating the assistant that he had made. His mind remembering the first time you called him Miggy before all this fell into place. How he hated the way he wanted to hear you call him that again, but like changing it to something cooler. “How much Lyla?” he mutters through clenched teeth. Lyla stops flitting to sit on his right shoulder, “35$ and a Miguelito Happy Meal.” she chirps.
“Fine.” he sighs, earning an elated yay from her as she disappears into the projector. The picture of you zooming into your face. Your eyes were scarlet with black covering your whole corneas like his, his heart skipping a beat at the commonality he never knew you both shared. He walks closer to the screen to find more ways to define the pixelated face of you. “I was going to add this to the list of possibilities we could make on her case, but I wanted you to see it first.” Jessica adds rubbing her stomach as she swivels her chair. Miguel looks at Jessica wondering if she was coming to the same conclusion he was, “What if she was bitten by the same toxic spider you used to inject yourself with? Well, one of the many spiders you’ve used.” she ponders. His eyes scatter about as he tries to remember every toxic spider venom he used on himself. “But with her webbing…” Jessica pulls him back to focus “It’s black and when she shoots, she has the ability to retract it back. A noticeable symbiote attribute and yet she has no sign of being one..” Jessica helps to brainstorm.
Miguel brought his attention back to your video, “Lyla, replay the video and keep the focus on her, keep the definition up. And tell me any extra attributes she displays. Dissect the webbing pattern as well.” He instructs, leaning his weight to his hands that grip the edge of his desk. Lyla groans with an elongated exasperated sigh, “What’s the secret word Miggyyy?” she sing songs, her voice echoing the immense lab. Jessica tries to hide her laugh as Miguel once again prays to whatever takes it to shush Lyla’s annoying humming. “Please.” he mumbles.
“I didn’t quite catch that Miggy?” Jessica prods, earning a piercing red glare from him.
“PLEASE LYLA, DO AS I SAY!!” he yells, rattling any loose screws within the lab and shooting his gaze back to the screen.
“You didn’t have to yell.” Lyla fake sniffles as the screen opens multiple other scientific scanners.
“And don’t get too comfortable back there Jess, you are the one to cause this to unravel in ways both of us never wanted.” Miguel quips, peaking over his shoulder to her. Jessica crosses her arms and pouts in offense, “At least I don’t fuck people’s apprentices because boundaries are a thing of the past.” she punches back.
“WE NEVER FUCKED!!” Miguel exclaims, baring his fangs at Jessica from the sudden angry outburst. Jessica’s eyes shot open as Lyla also stopped opening scientific tabs mid-way, silence enveloping the now confessional space. Miguel pinches his nose once again, blush taking over his whole being as embarrassment screams within his veins. You were definitely going to kill him if Lyla’s gossip girl disposition had anything to do with it.

I have this idea about line cook!matty stuck in my head for a really long time and finally i got the courage to send you this
So, summer comes to an end, it's time for reader to go back to college (I don't know if it was said, but I imagine it will be in another city/state). Reader and Matty agree to end their affair and move on.
A year passes. They never got back in touch with each other other than a rare interaction on social media (like those people who send fire emoji in your dm when you post a photo in stories)
Matty overhears a member of the kitchen commenting that Reader will be back in the summer. He's never admitted it to anyone, not even himself, but deep down Matty has missed her and can't wait to get back together.
But when reader finally arrives,
Surprise Surprise, she's not alone.
She brings a friend from college. A male, attractive, talented cook, age appropriate, close friend who is also going to be working on the restaurant during the summer ( i picture him as Will Poulter because i saw he is in the new season of the bear even thought i haven't watched yet)
And Matty is absolutely fuming in jealousy but try to keep his cool-i-don't-give-a-fuck facade.
Which he fails. Miserably.
And people realize he is always moody and rude to the new guy. "if you are not jealous, then why are you acting like that? 😏🤨 The new guy is so nice to everyone and very attractive 😉🥵" his mates teasing him.
I really don't know what happens from there, I just like to see a man running after a woman and being like "if i don't fix myself i'm going to lose her" and felt the need to share.
And, in case you haven't noticed yet, your stories have a significant impact in my life. You are so talented and I am thankful for being able to access your art. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and writings to the world. We are really blessed for having you. 💖
Lots of love, from your brazilian reader - 🎭
oh this was so cute!! i absolutely love to see what you guys do and imagine with my stories. i’m so glad you sent it in! that man would absolutely be glitching if she came back with another Chef😭 like any other guy would already be Pushing it but if it’s a Cook oh he would fuming. trying to figure out if they’re friends or dating, flirting with her in front of him On Purpose.
i am so so happy to see how much my writing has impacted you!! i literally could never imagine that anyone would care about my silly little stories so this is. Super touching☹️🫶 thank You for reading

10 comfort shows
I was tagged by @imlivingformyselfdontmindme for this thing. Thanks! The instructions are simple: "List 10 comfort shows and then tag 10 people." But I'm not a big tagger, and a lot of folks I know have done this already. If you haven't, though, and you're interested, please do!
The instructions said "10 comfort shows" not your favorite 10 comfort shows or the ones you watch the most often. So I made a list and I picked the ten that I immediately thought of something to say about. i'm all about comfort viewing and watching things repeatedly so I had to leave quite a few things off of this list.
Future Boy Conan
Tumblr media
I've lost count of how many times I've seen this series. It really is one of the most life-affirming, wholesome (in the real way) pieces of media I've ever encountered. The first time I saw it, I went into it expecting to see a fairly run-of-the-mill anime series with some early glimmers of Miyazaki's aesthetic and themes. But it's a frickin' masterpiece. Themes and visual mannerisms you see throughout Miyazaki's career are already here, full-blown, but it's also distinct from his other work in a way that makes it feel really fresh even if you've gone through his whole movie oeuvre. Mostly it just always has its heart impeccably in the right place.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Tumblr media
Don't talk to me about that movie. This is the adaptation against which all others must be measured. Faithful as heck to the book in most respects (we won't talk about Wet Darcy either), with an incredible cast, not to mention the costumes, set design, and locations. Watching this miniseries as a teenager could be the reason I'm still obsessed with shows and movies where half of the story is told through meaningful glances.
To My Star (1&2)
Tumblr media
I really lucked out having this show as one of my first BLs, except that I nearly squandered the opportunity because I wasn't paying close attention and missed a lot of the subtle details. And this is a show that is full of really subtle details! Talk about telling a story through meaningful glances. There's a lot going on on a nonverbal level in this one. It helps that the leads have such a great, nuanced kind of chemistry together and both just seemed to show up for these roles ready to dig deep and be present. Thank goodness I went back and rewatched this one after that first attempt! I know for some folks the second season premise was really painful, but I found it to be completely worth it in the end. I'd happily watch a third season if they made one. In the meantime, I continue to rewatch both series (sometimes in movie form) regularly and I notice different things each time.
Spaced
Tumblr media
This show was there for me at a time in my life when I needed comfort shows the most, when I was rebuilding my life after the abusive relationship that consumed most of my 20s. It's usually described in terms of the various pop culture references it uses, the movies the director and one of the co-writer/co-stars went on to make, or in some kind of generational terms as representing a demographic.
But I don't think those things are what make it interesting and rewarding. I guess the thing it boils down to at the end of the day is that it's very much a found family story. And an unconventional love story in which the two leads may or may not get together--after the series--but no matter what type of relationship theirs turns out to be, it will have changed them both for the better. In the meantime they’re facing their fears, honestly fixing their mistakes, and broadening their horizons, and they’re always lovable while being riddled with personal flaws.
Also, after having been raised on Coen Brothers movies and coming of age during the heyday of The Simpsons, I'm a sucker for a really quotable piece of media.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979)
Tumblr media
When it comes to adaptations, I usually have a strong preference for one while writing off the others. In this case, there are things I appreciate about the Tomas Alfredson film that this adaptation doesn't do as well, but this version has a great deal to say for itself too. The adaptation really captures Le Carré's voice, the cast is incredible, and the whole miniseries just has this wonderful pervasive tone to it that's not like anything else. (The soundtrack is unobtrusive but very effective, and it has a lot to do with that.)
I don't know if it's the fact that this series came out when I was a toddler and has the look and feel of a lot of shows my parents would watch on PBS when I was a child (heck, I bet they watched this very show on PBS), but this suspenseful spy thriller makes me feel relaxed as hell. Having seen it a ton of times helps, too. There's never anything resembling a surprise. But even if this type of series doesn't feel like your childhood and even if you're going to be surprised right and left by the plot, I think it's an incredibly well-constructed piece of work that almost anyone could enjoy.
Emma (2009)
Tumblr media
I'm very picky about my Austen adaptations. Emma has been adapted quite a bit, and I've found at least something to like about every version I've seen. But this is the best one by a good margin. I always love Romola Garai in anything, and she's lovely here--assertive, vulnerable, annoying when she should be and charming the rest of the time. She does a wonderful job portraying all of the subtle gradations of self-awareness that build in Emma throughout the story.
But I think the decisive factor has to be the screenplay and direction (not to mention other behind-the-scenes aspects). The folks behind this version just seem to have prioritized capturing the subtleties of the novel more than others. There are a few points where this is particularly apparent. One example is how this adaptation treats Frank Churchill. The 2009 version of Frank shows what a capricious, moody, immature person he is, but it also shows his good nature and the ways he tries to be open (in the novel, he attempts to tell Emma about his engagement to Jane Fairfax on multiple occasions and mistakenly believes she understands him). Hewing to the novel makes for a more complex, engaging character than the two-dimensional cad most other adaptations make out of Frank. The portrayal of the Box Hill incident is another example. This version of Emma has the most uncomfortable, unsparing rendering of Emma's insulting comment to Miss Bates that I've seen, but it also tempts us to laugh along with Emma. The scene in the novel is exactly the same way--it's complicated and makes us acknowledge our ambivalence. This adaptation keeps all of these strands alive in the story and the miniseries is better for it.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It's weird looking back now on how BtVS seemed back when it was new. Our standards were different for a reason. TV really wasn't as interesting or as progressive as it is now, and the range of both was narrower. Having a cishet white dude showrunner who would willingly utter the word "feminism" seemed like a remarkable piece of good fortune. And of course, we didn't know what was going on behind the scenes.
I imprinted on this show like a baby chick back then. It's not really possible for me to be objective about it. If I think it's good, how much of that is its actual quality and how much is the fact that it seemed like such a gift back then compared to what we were all used to? Well, some of it at least was actual quality, but I can't tell how much. So this show is special to me partly because it's grandfathered in due to circumstances and partly because it's actually good.
I remember when it seemed wild to me that there were people who could talk about  a TV show and discuss episodes by title. BtVS was the first show I did that with myself. Eventually, it didn't seem that remarkable. Basically, this was the show that made me into a fan.
This is another show that was there for me after my abusive relationship ended. I remember at times when I was lonely (which happened a lot; not only was I newly single, I also had to start almost entirely from scratch when it came to friendships) I would look at my little dvd binder thingy with my pile of Buffy discs and tell myself, "If all else fails, I have all these shows to watch until things improve."

There’s that found family theme again! How could you go wrong with a story that starts with foundlings raised by a witch and a clone soldier to fight in their evil army, then follows them as they slowly get their consciousnesses raised and find their own identities and meaningful connections? It's a remarkably subversive and deeply queer show. We were in a miniature golden age for high-quality, politically progressive, LGBTQ+ friendly American animated series for a while there, and this show was not only a part of it but a particular highlight. It's been tapering off for a while now and it's sad to see it come to an end, but at least we got shows like this one and we can keep watching them and introducing people to them.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Tumblr media
I don’t know why a series that’s so steeped in existential dread feels so cozy to me, but it does. Well, I guess it’s because the show is about finding your people, your coping strategies, and the unapologetically weird little hobbies that will help you to muddle through war, loss, spiritual crises, and the challenges of long-term love.
That, and it reminds me of my mom.
A lot of ink has been spilled over this series so I won't try to explain beyond that why it's so special. But I will say that it is absolutely the best Star Trek series. It's unpopular with a certain type of fan, but those philistines dislike it for exactly the same qualities that make it so great.
Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger
Tumblr media
I'm indecisive and bad at picking favorites, so I'm not sure what I'd consider my favorite tokusatsu series or even just my favorite sentai series. Zenkaiger would rank pretty high up there in both at the very least. But this is a list of comfort shows, not favorite shows or the best shows, and that's a category in which Zenkaiger is completely unbeatable. It's hopeful, funny, idealistic, and more than anything, definitely the sweetest toku show I've ever seen. It's also easy to pick a random episode and watch it out of context because of the villain-of-the-week thing (not that the larger-scale arc of the series wasn't also compelling).
This is yet another found family show. Families of origin are still very important in the series. The central characters are all trying to find, help, or learn about one or more of their family members. But it's also about blending your found family and your family of origin into a group so inclusive that it includes aliens and robots.
I'm only picking one gif for each show on this list except for this one. I couldn't pass up having one for Kaito, one for Stacy, and one for Zox.
(Edited to add: I switched out the three gifs here for a single replacement because I realized two of the ones I originally used were made by someone who requests that others not repost them.)
