i wanted to come here and leave an eloquent, well thought out, new year's message but, despite being a writer, i'm not very good with words — contradictive, i know. i spent most of my year abstaining from writing and sharing my work, and only a few months ago i decided to give it a chance again, and it was the best thing i could have done for myself. not only did it make me happy, allowed me to have fun and to express myself again, i was able to reconnect with and meet a lot of incredible new people

To Bring You Home

Pairing: Steve Harrington x Reader

Summary: Steve Harrington’s had his fair share of near death experiences. So have you. A college party doesn’t exactly fit that criteria, but he’d save you from it just the same. He’d save you from everything, if he had the means. (set between season 3 & 4)

a/n: This is the first time I’ve written anything for Stranger Things, and the first time I’ve written outside of Marvel!! I have no idea what I’m doing but thank you @barnesafterglow for putting up with me while I did it <3

The arm Steve had slung over your shoulders was supposed to be grounding—you knew that.

In a sense, it was. The weight of him was familiar and you could smell the wisps of his cologne every time he tugged you closer. His laugh echoed in your chest, blocking out the bumping music and loud conversations with each joyful vibration. The way his fingers kept skating against your arm left a trail of warmth along your skin; he always made you feel warm, and you were grateful for that tonight.

But, in another sense, not even Steve holding you against him was enough.

It had been weeks since Starcourt Mall “burned down”, and nothing seemed to be enough; there was nothing to fix the coil wrapped too tight around your skin and nothing to fix the fact that everything felt off.

Steve said the party would be a good idea. Going to college was a big deal, and your boyfriend was insistent that you would make the most of it. Starting with the welcome party advertised on a bright green flier that had somehow made its way into his hands on your campus tour.

It was almost impressive how fast he had found a frat party. Hawkins was an hour away from campus, and still, Steve “the hair” Harrington never got too far without an invitation.

It had been fun at first. Steve had laughed when you failed at shotgunning a beer and tugged you against his chest when you felt disheveled by joy. You met a lot of new people—all of which hit it off with your boyfriend in no time—and you actually were excited for classes to start now that you knew who’d be in them.

But as the night dragged on and no one showed any signs of slowing down, you were presented with the bleak reminder that no one had gone through what you had. The broken plate in the kitchen was met with loud laughs and teases instead of your white-knuckle grip on Steve’s sweater. Flashing lights in the hall were followed by shouts of awe while you, embarrassingly, shoved your face into Steve’s arm.

No one saw, but Steve wasn’t stupid enough to believe that you were simply surprised—as you had put it—and that the tremors slowly wracking your body were because it was cold by the window.

“Nah, you gotta be kidding me,” Steve laughed, jostling you under his arm as he pointed a finger at some guy named Ted. The motion had you blinking a few times to clear your head. “I work at a video store, man. I know my movies and you gotta be bonkers to think chicks don’t still dig Molly Ringwald.”

“She’s old news,” Ted argued, raising his arms in a shrug. “Had her time, but it’s over.”

Steve craned his neck down to you. “What d’you think, baby? Molly Ringwald?”

You smirked back at him, the expression tired in a way only he could catch. “Old news.”

Steve shot his head back with a groan, placing a hand over his heart and crumpling the material of his sweater. “My own girlfriend? Just demolishing me like that in front of all these people?”

“Well, maybe if you actually paid attention to the movies you sell in that video store, you wouldn’t be having this problem, now would you, Harrington?”

Ted let out a loud whoop, the sound echoing amongst the small group of people you were talking to. A chorus of taunts followed close behind, and maybe in another life—the one before he had met you—Steve would’ve been angry at the small embarrassment. But he just shook his head at you with a small smile, tugging you futher into his arm. “Yup, that’s it,” he finalized, patting the pockets of his jeans with his free hand. “We’re outta here. This one gets a little drunk and suddenly becomes a villain.”

You scoffed, lightly hitting his chest and doing very little to resist the tug Steve was prompting towards the door. Laughs and goodbyes followed you all the way onto the porch of the frat house, the brisk night air an instant relief on your warm face. Steve slowly rattled through the keys on his keyring as you made headway down the sidewalk, reluctant to let you go even as he struggled with the task one-handed.

There were some things still haunting Steve from that night as well, his were just less obvious than yours—more discreteness in the ways he handled them.

“You were right, that was fun,” you admitted, loosely hanging onto his wrist as it brushed at your collarbone.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m always right,” he muttered, linking your fingers together while still distractedly sorting through his keys.

You continued, “I met a few girls in my major. It’d be nice if we were in the same classes. I have their numbers in my purse somewhere.”

“That’s good, sweetheart.”

“And I think we both scored an invite whenever there’s a party this year. All those frat bros in there loved—”

“Got it!” Steve interrupted, picking out the right key and coming to a stop in front of his car. “Now, you wanna tell me how you’re really doing?”

“What do you—”

Steve pulled his arm away from your shoulders, walking you back and propping you up until you were sitting on the hood of his car. He tucked your hair behind your ear as you stared up at him with a furrowed brow.

“C’mon, y/n, don’t bullshit me,” he softly prompted, sliding his fingers below your chin. “I saw you having fun in there. But I also saw when it stopped being fun. Thought I was gonna have to fight the guy with the multi-colored strobe lights.”

A small smile tugged at your mouth. “Dustin tells me you don’t have the best track record when it comes to fights.”

Steve rolled his eyes, abandoning the hard work on his keyring as he carelessly shoved it back into his pocket. He breathed out a disgruntled “that damn kid” before swiping a hand through his hair. With a small shake of his head, he gazed back down at you, placing his arms on either side of your thighs on the hood.

His breath met your lips as he asked, “Really, sweetheart, how you doing? First time we went out in… a while. You can talk to me about it.”

You bit the inside of your cheek, eyes tracking over Steve’s face as it lit up with the moon and the broken street lamps. It was calm outside, quiet with the party a few houses down contained to windows and walls, and you felt safer than you had in the past few hours. Even though you were in the open and defenseless, Steve was here; Steve was here and looking at you like he’d fight just about anything you asked him to—even if he’d definitely lose.

“I just, um…” you started, words lost on you as you scrunched your face up in embarrassment. This was stupid; you should’ve been fine for the entire night.

“Hey,” Steve called, his right hand coming up to hold the side of your neck, fingers on your cheek and by your ear. “I’m right here. Just me. I’m not gonna go off telling anyone anything, you got that?”

You pressed your lips into a firm line, nodding before finally getting out, “Sometimes… a lot of the time… I just feel like everything’s too much, you know? Like, I bet when people close their eyes—when they even just blink—it’s black, it’s nothingness. But every time I do that it’s…it’s those things. It’s the Russians and… and Billy and—”

Steve let out a few gentle shushes, ushering your face into his neck when your words started to jumble together. He ran a hand down your spine and kept the other planted on the back of your head, allowing you to even out your breaths and feel collected.

“Happens to me too.” His voice vibrated against your temple. “It’s not the other things I see though, it’s you. And Robin and the kids. Guess it’s also that skyscraper of a monster chasing our car down. Kinda hard to forget that thing.”

You huffed out a laugh against his neck, eyes fluttering when his lips met your hair. You knew he remembered every little detail from that mess, but Steve was used to being strong for everyone else—for you.

Steve panicked in the middle of the night instead, when he woke up and you were downstairs getting water; he panicked when there was no one else to suffer from his fear. That didn’t stop you from holding him when he laid back down, pretending like you didn’t know the real reason he shot up from the pillows every time you left.

“I know, Steve,” you whispered, leaning back in his hold to catch his softened gaze. “I know you think about it. But I got you too, you know? Like how you have me.”

Steve leaned down and brushed his lips to yours, once, before softly asking, “All that stuff really screwed us up, didn’t it?”

“I’d be surprised if it hadn’t.”

Someone from the party knocked a window open, a few plastic cups tumbling from the glass panes. The music was louder after that, and the conversations were less muffled.

“Wish I could save you from all this, too,” Steve said so quietly you almost lost it in the new sounds. “Not just the monsters and shit, those are the easy part.”

“Why don’t you start with bringing me home?”

since the year is almost over …

i thought i'd also make a post about it, because i saw some of my most beloved mutuals do it and it seems like such a lovely and gentle way to let go of these past 365 days.

this year was really, really tough and despite my best intentions, it's been a lot of letting myself down. i've not been as present as i wanted, nor as kind, nor as consistent, nor as productive, nor as emotionally stable. and yet, i have so many things to be grateful for, most of all the people in my life.

(i'm getting a bit mushy after this so i'll hide it under the cut)

friends, you don't even know how much i appreciate you. i know i've not been able to be the friend you all deserve this year but i sincerely hope you still know that you are very much loved wherever you are and wherever i am.

@brandycranby i love that we have found each other this year, even though the circumstances why we bonded were truly less than ideal. i love chatting with you and making up headcanons at random hours of the day. (and i'm so happy you're finally watching knives out)

@marvelettesassemblenow you're one of my favourite people on the planet and i hope you know that. thank you for always being there even when i take ages to reply, and for being an absolute genius when it comes to gift giving

@barnesafterglow we don't talk as consistently but i still cherish every second of it when we do. i'm so proud of you and i love you more than you know. also you make the best voice messages
