ABOUT.
Billie Vasquez-Hind Man was born in Heart Butte, MT, to Rita Vasquez and Lee Hind Man. The couple welcomed a second child, Araceli, two years later.
Billie never did particularly well in school. He struggled to fit in, and got in a trouble a lot. When he was a child, that trouble was mostly talking too much. When he reached his teens, it was excessive absences, talking back, and being the class clown. His poor performance in high school led to him dropping out and being sent to the Montana Youth Challenge Academy. He was able to get his GED while in attendance there, even though he continued to get himself in trouble for clowning around.
College treated him better than high school. He enrolled at MSU and majored in Environmental Horticulture. He had ambitions to return to his community and do some kind of good with his degree. He didn’t have the opportunity to do this. His father died shortly after he graduated, prompting his mother to sell everything that they owned and move out of Heart Butte. Because he often struggled to feel like he belonged outside of his family, Billie decided to move with her – thinking a fresh start might help all of them in one way or another.
When they arrived in Oxbow Ridge, Billie set about getting a job to help support them while they figured out what they were going to do. He got certified as a Pharmacy Technician, intending to work in the little town, but ended up working at a big box retailer over an hour away instead. While he was working, his mother was scouting out properties and store fronts with the intention of opening a business of her own. She finally settled upon an old, run down, gas station. Rita used every bit of her savings to renovate the gas station and opened up the “Oxbow Ridge Trading Post” a year later. Billie quit his job to help Rita and Araceli run the business. Billie had been, naturally, getting into trouble at the store anyways. The Oxbow Ridge Trading Post reflected Rita’s desire to make her business indispensable to the community they’d settled in. It was a gas station and convenience store, with several pumps and the expected road trip snacks. It was also a trading post style gift shop that would have been a perfect little tourist trap… if Oxbow Ridge ever had tourists. The gas station was, at least, a success. The family settled into a routine and rhythm for close to two decades. Rita’s health suddenly declined, and she moved back to Heart Butte to be closer to her sisters and the rest of the family. Araceli followed after her a few months later. Billie found himself alone, running what had been a family business.
When Rita and Araceli moved, Billie had to reduce the hours to what he could work alone. That cut into the profits that the business was able to generate – and how much money he was able to send to help his mother with housing and medical expenses. He found himself researching how he could make the business profitable and came across the idea of opening a dispensary and becoming a grower. After months of dithering and talking about it, he decided to just go for it and applied for a loan and the licenses he’d need. A short time later, the Oxbow Ridge Trading Post was being renovated – again. Billie also used some of the loan money to buy some land and build a greenhouse. “Buddie’s Dispensary” was born and officially opened as a part of the Oxbow Ridge Trading Post. He thought that “Buddie’s” was a good play on words but the name of the business has resulted in him sometimes being called “Buddie” instead of “Billie” by folks that miss the word play.
Billie is the kind of outgoing person that “everyone” knows. He’s friendly and prone to telling over-the-top stories. Because of his tendency to tell stories and deflect conversations back onto the person he’s talking to rather than himself, it can feel hard to actually get to know Billie. He rarely talks about himself in a serious fashion, and when he does it is hard to tell if what he’s saying is true or not. He continues to struggle with feeling like he doesn’t fit in, and has always found that people like him more when he’s making them laugh.
