Big Time Rush Season 1, Episode 8: “Big Time Break”

While I will not be covering this episode in full (I do have some gifsets from it, though), I do wish to ramble a bit about Kendall and Katie, because they've got some great moments together in it.

So. Shows that portray close and healthy sibling dynamics. Makes me insane, right? Right. Siblings who love and look out for each other. When each one manages to be The Protector of the other in some way, regardless of age difference. Brilliant stuff.

And for a show that so often relies on absurdity and just plain off-the-walls humor, it manages to have depth as well, if you're looking for it. Which I am. Why else would I have created this blog but to analyze this delightful series?

Kendall and Katie may possibly be one of my favorite fictional siblings. From the very first episode, there's such a strongly established bond that you can sense even though they really don't interact that much. You see it in the way that Kendall immediately (happily) complies with Katie's request to hear the "Giant Turd" song and when Katie is going on about how often Kendall sings—including when she can't sleep at night.

I won't go into all my thoughts and feelings on the Knight family situation and how a lot of who Kendall is was likely forced upon him when he became "man of the house," but...those thoughts are there. Might explore them at a later date in another post or in a fic, but anyway! As you make your way through the first season, their relationship solidifies more, and you see the warmth. The way that they look out for each other, and the fierceness with which they love each other. Katie is an independent, tough cookie, but she's still a little kid who sees her big brother as a role model and needs his guidance. And Kendall, being the guy who always tries to be there for others and set a good example, does a wonderful job of looking after her while also knowing when to step back. In a lot of ways, he's a combination of brother, father-figure, and friend, which I have OTHER thoughts about (because that is a lot of weight to carry around at 16).

Focusing in on "Big Time Break" though, Kendall's storyline deals with him still wanting to get to know and befriend Jo, even though she has a boyfriend. At one point, Katie overhears Jo on the phone and discovers that Jo doesn't have a boyfriend at all; she's been pretending to have one for fear of romantic pursuits interfering with her career. Perfectly understandable to want to prioritize in life, of course, but Katie is not happy to hear of the deception.

Jo has been LYING to her dear big brother?? Now, she could just sit back and not get involved. After all, Kendall and Jo are older and have their own confusing, teenage lives. It'd be okay if she wanted to shrug and let them figure it out themselves. It doesn't have to be her business.

But Katie Knight can't do that. She goes right over and pulls Kendall from his conversation in a way so very fitting of her character.

This is another aspect of their dynamic that I really like: Katie's complete lack of fear to take charge when needed. Kendall isn't listening to her? She just rolls her eyes and drags him by his ear. Katie Knight, expert on gettin' things done.

She then lets Kendall know that he's been getting played "like a fiddle." Not wanting Jo to be suspicious of their conversation, she cleverly advises Kendall to turn and give Jo the "my little sister is crazy gesture," to which I must include another gif because I love Kendall's execution. He's got the best expressions.

They end the conversation with Katie essentially challenging Kendall to do the right thing, which, in her mind, is to confront Jo and get the truth out of her.

And I love this for two reasons. 1. Katie's vaguely threatening reminder that she looks up to him and 2. They have an adorable handshake! When did they come up with this?? It's so sweet, and I love them.

Lol, so much for a "mini post," but oh well. Kendall and Katie are wonderful siblings, and it delights me. I'm glad they didn't go the route of them being the type of siblings who are always bickering with each other or who ignore each other/generally just don't care. Give me siblings who love each other, who get invested in each other's lives, and who have silly little secret handshakes.

Anyway! Sad bangers are my jam, and I wanted something that conveyed the grief of losing someone, but giving the energy a bit of a kick after the Breeders song

3. I Don't Smoke - Mitski

I'm a basic bitch who loves Mitski, what can I say?

No, this song is for the Gareth sad spiral (TM) and for the fact that sad smoking is cool, actually (don't @ me)

4. Peel - Weakened Friends

This is a Shepherd song, you know, the beginning of her terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad nervous breakdown.

There was an earlier version of LBEL which was much more actively about Shepherd trying to bring Cerberus down from the inside: but actually now I think the lyrics speak much more to Shepherd feeling like she always has to fit the mold of the pragmatic, practical soldier

5. Toy Soldier - The Menzingers

This is thee Garrus song, sorry I don't make the rules. The lost friends! Carrying on despite that loss!!! Dutyyy

6. Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

Gareth is kind of an old soul, which is why his songs lean slightly more retro - and just the deep well of yearning in this song always gets me. It's very much his feelings after Shepherd saves him, loving her and wishing he didn’t

7. Born to Lose - Sleigh Bells

I primarily associate this song with Shepherd being discarded by the Hierarchy and the struggles she has with knowing protocol is to kill herself

8. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - The Beatles

Gareth: conceal, don't feel 😢 I have always loved this song and it's very much Gareth knowing that he can't be open about his feelings

9. Quitter - Weakened Friends

More good mental health time for Shepherd, excellent. I don’t mind repeating artists in my playlists but I do tend to keep it to one

10. Bullet with Butterfly Wings - The Smashing Pumpkins

The one thing I am actually a snob about with playlists is not using too many "popular" songs, but I did like this one for Horizon. Shepherd's really starting to spiral here, folks

11. Anybody (Stripped) - Dead Sara

Horizon sex, Shepherd POV. She's so lonely in this fic, really longing for connection, and this song is the words she doesn't know how to say

12. Baby I Got the Death Rattle - Los Campesinos!

Horizon sex, Gareth POV

This is one of those songs that doesn't start as a blorbo song, but if you tell me you've heard a lyric that's more "Garrus Vakarian down bad" than "Baby I got the death rattle and baby I got it bad | I've been digging my own grave for quite some time when I'm not digging up the past" then I would love to hear it

13. Bedroom Eyes - Dum Dum Girls

One of my favourite bits of LBEL is the quiet intimacy that Gareth and Shepherd have when they're sleeping together, and this song reflects that

14. Hopeless - Screaming Females

Shepherd dumping Gareth because she likes him too much 😭 I'm fine. The lyrics and the vocals are so plaintive, again the emotions Shepherd won't allow herself to express

15. Something Bigger, Something Brighter - Pretty Girls Make Graves

This isn't a terribly literal inclusion, it's a good angsty-sounding song for where Shepherd's at post-breakup

16. Heavy Metal Heart - Sky Ferreira

This is just. Shepherd's song 💖 I love it, and her

17. Apocalypse Now (&Later) - Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers

This is a great Mass Effect 2 song more broadly but man is it perfect for Gareth and Shep reuniting just before the suicide mission!!!

18. The Hand That Feeds - Nine Inch Nails

Fuck Cerberus, part 1. There just is not a better song for being done with someone else's bullshit

19. Search and Destroy - Peaches

Fuck Cerberus, part 2 (or, how Shepherd got her groove back). Peaches always has such brilliant swagger and I adore this cover - Shepherd coming back into her own power and recognising how dangerous (and unpredictable) she can be

20. I Would Find You - Oceanator

I adore this song, the softness and kindness at the end of the world. It's really the thesis statement of the fic, and a promise for Gareth and Shepherd going forward, even through the hard times. It was the perfect grace note to end on

1. Rebel On The Run by Dakota Ray Parker- I was mostly thinking of Tuco with this one, but Blondie's also a bit of a rebel in his own way. He's clearly in the bounty hunting business for that sweet sweet $$$ and not for any upstanding moral reasons

2. I'm Good For Nothing by Jimmy Dawkins- Once again more about Tuco than Blondie, but everything I've ever seen about bounty hunters has just a pinch of self depreciation so I think Blondie probably has some too, he's just buried it DEEP down

3. Strangers by Town Mountain- The beginning of their partnership, the first bits of devotion that neither of them will admit.

4. Going Down by Freddie King- Blondie getting deeper and deeper in his partnership with this criminal he has a crush on and keeping up the facade of being an upstanding citizen who happens to be a bounty hunter.

5. Ain't That Peculiar by Fanny (cover)- strengthening of their partnership and whatever elaborate kink thing they have going on with the whole hangman con

6. Bad Spell by Larkin Poe- I'll be honest this one just fits the vibes of their relationship/situationship to me and I can't exactly explain why

7. Be Forewarned by Macabre- The title says it all, the two of them warning each other in their own ways do not fuck with me. The effectiveness of their warnings is pretty moot but, there it is lol

8. Walk In The Sun by The Angry- ah, the song I came across listening to random alt(ish) oldies that made me want to make this playlist. Tuco's walk and Blondie's walk, while very different in vibes, do both have spite (on Tuco's part) baked into each one. And lots of sun, too.

9. Gold Gun Girls by Metric- yet another one where it's more about the vibes, but the lyrics speak of chasing something empty in gold and guns and girls and I think that's both of these two in their own ways

10. Searchin' For a Rainbow by The Marshall Tucker Band- I mean. They ARE looking for a pile of cash that sounds too good to be true!

11. Hope in Hell by Black Pistol Fire- the spiteful vibes fit both of them really well, but especially Tuco!

12. Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane- Okay back on track with movie plot, the two of them in the Mission and the whump happening there <3 Tuco was fucking with him but I do think a part of him did genuinely feel a little guilty. If nothing else than because being around his brother makes him default just a little less selfish.

13. Miss You by The Rolling Stones- Seperated in the Union POW camp and by Angel Eyes :( They miss each other! I swear it's not just because of the song name, something about the guitar style and harmonica that speaks to me as Blondie.

14. Stuck In The Middle With You by Stealers Wheel- The bridge. Need I say more? 👀

15. Funnel Of Love by Wanda Jackson- Ok so after the movie they say fuck it and accept they don't want to separate in my fan fic. And the way she describes it makes it sound out of control like I'm sure they both feel about it

18. Runaway by Bonnie Raitt- So I've been considering retconning/explaining in a different way in my own fic that maybe Blondie DOES run away again after the gold and Tuco has to track him down. But also that bit where Tuco's tracking him with his cigars 🖤

19. You're No Good by Linda Ronstadt- They both know the other is no good for them in their own way, but they can't help themselves. For whatever reason they're drawn together time and time again

20. Starting Over by Christ Stapleton- So this is intended for right before my series begins, when they finally accept they want to stay together and kind of like each other, maybe they've kissed and had sex by now maybe not. Either way something fundamentally changes after reuniting with the money.

21. When It Comes To Love by Crystal Shawanda- They've had their ups and downs but in the end they're there for each other. Also I love Chrystal Shawanda's music so much I saw her live like 7 years ago and- (I'm biased but this IS on here because I genuinely think it fits them, the lyrics about being left wanting, desire, etc.)

22. Place In The Country by Fanny (cover)- The name of the song the lyrics about wanting to escape a war the longing for a place in the country? *chef's kiss* fits Blonco in my fic perfectly! Also the raw quality of Fanny in live performances fits Blonco So Well to me.

23. Before The Devil Knows We're Dead by Turnpike Troubadors- The wild devil may care way these two idiots blew up a bridge for money? This song gets that.

24. I Only Want To Be With You by Dusty Springfield 25. Baby What You Want Me To Do by Chuck Berry and 26. Nothing Compares To You by The Helltones- Some nice songs that fit the mood of this playlist to me no deep meaning, sorry.

27. Life Is a Carnival by The Band- Them adopting Large One, surviving the gunfight with Ang and Flora, finding the kids, etc. They've had a wild ride, and they're not done with hijinks yet! (I don't know if they'll ever be done with hijinks)

28. Hide Away by Stevie Ray Vaughan- Another one that just fit right in, this song is on the playlist almost entirely because it's what I was listening to while researching for their house and it stuck in my mind, especially with the thematic title.

29. Hell of a View by Eric Church- The two of them being sentimental about each other <3

30. Before I met You By Sierra Ferrell (cover)- Yet another love song I just think is nice and kinda fits the vibe of the playlist :) also the themes of wanting to ramble and be free? Both of them to a T!

31. Years by Sierra Ferrell (cover & I added it JUST as I'm typing this)- This one fits Blonco the way I wrote them SO WELL 😭 I can see old Blonco drinking their morning coffee enjoying grandbabies (maybe even great grandbabies?) and feeling some of the lyrics, especially the one about raising a family🖤. Once again Sierra Ferrell's version a) because of the raw quality and b) oh my god her voice 😳 The John Anderson version is also Very Good though, especially live.

32. Sober II by Lorde- Perhaps the most out of place song on this list, and the oddest to explain because... okay backstory lore; it's May(ish) 2023, I've just had my brain rewired forever by TGBU in SEVERAL different ways, it's on my mind and I'm half asleep in the back of my parents' car on the way home from a long trip, it's warm and sunny and my music is on shuffle and I'm overtired. So I'm thinking about how crazy the entire thing with Blondie and Tuco is and this song came on and whoa, it's them, "How we kissed and killed each other"? "All the gunfights and the limelights and the holy sick divine nights"? IT THEM!! It's forever associated with them for me now. I wanted to return closer to the original dynamic to finish out my playlist and I think the "we loved each other but holy shit we had our problems" in this song is so good for that!

Stories from summer camp - masterpost

Hi everyone

This will be an even more personal blog post than I usually do since I’ll talk about my experiences at summer camp this year from July 16 – July 29 2023 (Some of you might have noticed I was unavailable/less online within this time frame). I have chosen to do it in smaller chapters where this will be a masterpost summing up the different topics. If you then want more context, you can then click on the different links where I’ll go into more detail.

First up: what’s the summer camp?

Summer camp is my term for a combined 2x1 week course at a specialized music school for adults. You chose a topic for each week. You live at the school for the weeks you are attending together with other music loving adults from the age of 17 years old and beyond. There will be morning and evening activities you can attend ranging from yoga and rave in the morning to jam, open mic, talks and concerts in the evening. Every week ends with a showcase where all courses show what they’d been working on that week.

How was it?

It was great! Being my second year out as nonbinary at summer camp I felt a bit conscious about the fact that I am different from the norm (see chapter 2), yet people were nice and supportive of me and my gender identity. There were people I really bonded with (see chapter 6+7), and like it is the case every year, I especially enjoyed the open mic events (see chapter 8). It was a year with some downs like when I became selectively mute the first Wednesday (chapter 4) or felt like I’d embarrassed myself in front of the whole camp (chapter 5) but there were also amazing moments like when I wrote a song with somebody I only had met two days prior by accident (chapter 6) or got to live the dream of being Jere for a day performing my own rendition of Cha Cha Cha the last evening (chapter 12). The first week I was one of five singers in a pop rock band (chapter 3) which turned out way better than I feared when first meeting my bandmates. The week after I got to be asocial and nerdy by locking myself into a sound studio late into the night producing a käärijä cover (chapter 10). All in all, this was another wonderful two weeks where I got to just be myself without any strings attached. As mentioned earlier, if you want any more information and story times, I’ll be submitting twelve additional posts that’ll be linked below.

Refusing to Forget "The Reasons Why I Shipped Toi Kuji x Kazuki Yasaka" Part 1

1. Both of them have brother complexes in their family even though in different ways. Then their problems lead them to impact their own morality and lifestyle. Even they want to use Dish of Hope for their each own brother. Here

2. Both Kazuki and Toi have their own beautiful mom who looks the same as them, especially in their hair and eye color respectively. Here

3. Their eyes zoom which reflects some leak scenes (My favorite part of them of course is their eyes and the zoom of the eyes). Here

4. Their merchs sometimes being juxtaposed (just like ReoMabu did). Here

5. Usually the 1st and 2nd protags' official colors are Blue and Red. Kazuki (Red), Toi (Blue) Same cases with other animes' protags. Banana Fish: Ash (Red), Eiji (Blue); Yuri!!! on Ice: (Blue), Victor (Red/Purple), turquoise (actual) here

Explain: In the official merch, Victor's official color actually is turquoise, but since he has his Stammi Vicino's costumes are pink and purple, his color can be depicted as pink (or we can mention it red) and purple.

6. Speak of the devil, both of their official colors match with both their hair and eye color. Meanwhile, even though Enta's color is yellow and matches his hair color, not with his eyes which are green. Here

7. Same pattern: One has a slightly hanging bangs style that parted a little bit of his left eye; the other has an asymmetrical parting on his hair, and some can cover one eye. All of them parted on the left eye, except Victor. Here

8. Of course many moments about them from all episodes (except ep 3). Update: even I like Ep. 7 since Kazuki is now smiling and calling Kuji 'Toi' which means he has become close to him. But the result is Enta's jealousness. Here

9. they have different belt buckle types which can be depicted as their personality. Toi: frame-style buckle Kazuki: box-out buckle When they open/close their buckles, Toi's is more complicated than Kazuki's, just like their rep lives. Here

11. In their childhood, both of them had pure cutesy round eyes and small gaps when they stared at something even though in different vibes. Seems parallel but opposite, isn't it? Here

12. Both of them have the initiative to first clean their soccer field together twice (1st: Toi, 2nd: Kazuki) before they know that the actual culprit of ruining their spot is Enta who is the one who is always on that spot. Here

13. Coincidentally both of them have upside-down lives that begin from 5 years old happiness to 10 years old sadness. Here

14. They have slender and delicate necks, jawlines, napes, and collarbones which are always being exposed in every episode. Also, Toi's Adam Apple looks sexy. Kazuki still doesn't have it yet, huh? No wonder! Here

15. YEAY!!! Finally, the relationship between Kazuki's Miçanga and Toi has been the truth. Even they have their (side)forgotten 1st meeting. Do you remind them of some other couple in another anime?

16. In fact, during the anime their left eyes have always been the focus of their scenes. I know why the left eye is special for being zoomed. Even Enta doesn't get that treatment yet because his eyes are being focused on both. Here

17. Kazuki Leak's OST and Toi Leak's have different basic chords but both of them are full instruments. If you listen their songs repeatedly (minus Enta's) you'll find that they have some synchronized beats and vibes even though different chords and instruments. Even their songs end with a fade-out chorus which gets quieter and quieter, unlike Enta Leak's song chorus which ends with some growing surprising strings (maybe). Here

18. Kazuki and Toi have the letter 'K' in front of their names (Kazuki and Kuji) and the letter 'i' as the last letter in their nicknames [Kazuk(i) and To(i)]. Are they only coincidences or there are the intended meanings behind these, guys? Here

19. The zodiacs Kazuki: Taurus Toi: Scorpio Believe or not, there are some fun important facts about their zodiacs and the compabilities between them. Here

I feel like that's such an awkward question, but I'll do my best to answer. Take "it is what it is," for example, he believes in that, sure he's has tragedy occur in his life, but getting older, he has grown into a "it is what it is," mindset, he also believes in "don't judge a book by its cover," (granted he is slightly hypocritical in this sense but he's trying his best), it's hard to really determine if he does or not since I looked up cliches and they're different than what I thought LMAO.

33: what kind of music does your sim listen to and who is their favorite artist?

ooooohhhh okay I like this question. Roo is, musically, very similar to me, he's scrambled and doesn't have a set music taste, I guess if you could define it in any way, it'd be Indie Music, he listens to songs you probably haven't heard of, or have, but nobody talks about them, off the top of your head, if he said Single ladies, you'd think oh! Beyonce! But if he said crave, you'd probably scramble to think of who it could be (it's "eli.", I love his music), and he definitely wouldn't be upset if you said "I don't know that artist."

A couple of artists he enjoys (in no particular order): Ricky montgomery (my MAN, projecting on roo </3), Roe Kapara, Brakence, Autoheart, Tame impala, and Good kid (I actually have no idea if these artists are considered Indie, but I literally never hear anyone talk about them except for Kevin and MAYBE Ricky).

A Ship Thing I saw that I’m gonna use for Matt/Asha, because I barely see any content of this pairing

2. They switch, but Matt’s usually the big spoon because I like to imagine he’s super cuddly

3. Asha could pick Matt up, no problem.

4. Matt knows that Asha can hold up her own, so he doesn’t worry as much as she does. On the other hand, Asha tends to worry more when they’re out on the “battlefield” or when he’s off somewhere by himself.

5. Asha. She’d probably let Matt try it every once in a while if they wanted to do some NyteBlayde roleplaying, but Asha likes Matt more when he’s himself.

6. Depends on the situation. If they’re together, like if they’re working or just hanging out on the ship, Matt will usually initiate kisses. But if they’ve been apart for a while (ie; Asha getting rescued from her simulation) Asha will always kiss Matt first.

7. Asha probably is more used to waking up early, while Matt likely stays up half the night hacking or playing games.

23. Oh god, Matt just. Chugging Saints Flow when he’s planning to pull an all nighter doing who knows what on his laptop, and Asha’s like “I swear, if you keep me up all night with this, I’ll kill you.”

24. Asha’s more ticklish, but Matt has only tickled her once. He wound up not needing to wear makeup on his left eye for about a week. While it was convenient, he doesn’t plan on making that mistake again. Black eyes just aren’t worth it.

8. Do they have any favorite activities to do together?

One of their favorite activities to do is show each other different songs they like! I think Tyler does make fun of like 60% of narrators music taste but he does actually end up liking a band or two or some songs.

I think narrator would like any music Tyler likes and would obsessively listen to any songs Tyler says are his favorites so he can figure out why & maybe somehow understand Tyler more thru the lyrics.

When they do this I think they lay on top of Tylers bed just looking at the ceiling or something like that :) maybe while they make soap sometimes too.

16. What’s their favorite “domestic bliss” moment? Do they cook/clean together? Do they like to go out shopping together?

They both crave ‘domestic bliss’ but neither would admit it and both are too scared to have genuine soft moments with each other so they cover up everything by making a joke out of it 💀 like joking like “HA! You just kissed me on the cheek like a wife would do before her husband is off for work 😂 classic!!!”. So like their favorite moments are those where they do act all lovey dovey but also act like they can’t take it seriously in front of the other 🫤

(Kinda related. Answers to the other two parts of the question) I think Tyler cooks and Narrator cleans before and after Tyler cooks! Like I’m sure their dinner table, sink, and counters all have random junk on it so if narrator knows Tyler wants to cook a actual meal, he’ll try to clean up at least just a bit so it’s easier to Tyler if he’s making a big meal. He cleans up after too or at least tries to remember to.

If their schedule allows for it or if it’s the weekend, they do go shopping together! Now they barely probably ever pay for anything so it’s more like a stealing trip 💀💀 but they probably really enjoy it anyways. Tyler gets to rant about the insane prices & narrator gets to listen to those rants 💖

28. What’s something that reminds them of their partner(s)? Do they have anything on them daily as a reminder (a photo, phone background, tattoo, clothing/accessory, etc)?

I think I answered something like this for them before so I wanna talk about tattoos like mentioned in the question…

They’d never actually go get any professionally done probably even though maybe Tyler would be more alright for paying for something like that than other things. So I think how it would end up with either of them getting a tattoo is that Tyler somehow found one tattoo machine where he could do tattoos himself at home 💀

With Tyler I don’t think he really wants to be tattooed up. But I think if they’ve been together for a while, He would put him & Narrators initials together around a heart somewhere. Maybe on the back of his wrist or somewhere he’s able to hide it a bit.

Narrator does NOT want any tattoos. He’s a pathetic, scrawny loser so him having a tattoo would look odd according to him but Tyler doesn’t give a fuck. He keeps going on and on about how it’s okay and he’ll only tattoo something really small and to stop whining and letting ‘the man’ tell you how to look, so that’s how narrator ends up with a little smiley face from him on the back of his wrist 💀 he’s not overjoyed but quickly becomes weird in his head about it and over analyzes the meaning of Tyler drawing a smiley face and he’s all “he’s left his mark on me 😩😩😩” when Tyler just thought it would be silly to give him that 💀

You were in and out of it for the next few days. Whenever your eyes would crack open and you would even slightly move your arm, you would be in immense pain before you would pass out again. You could sometimes hear the voices of your family talking to you, but never Arthur. Good, he definitely shouldn’t see you like this. 

Whenever you heard Philza, he would be talking to you about all the journeys he’s been on in his hundreds of years of living. Oh yeah, you found out that he was an immortal being that can’t die. Your brain was too tired and clouded to contemplate it. 

Whenever you heard Technoblade, his monotone and deep voice always eased your worries. It gave you something to focus on; if anything, his voice was the one that cut through the fog the most. He would always recite Greek myths to you, often telling you that you reminded him of a few characters. 

Whenever you heard Wilbur, all you heard was him asking you questions such as ‘how was your day’ or ‘what do you think of someone-so’. He would talk to you as if you were conscious, often having one sided conversations with you. Sometimes he would bring his guitar and compose new songs, asking you if he should keep a lyric or if he should throw it away. 

Whenever you heard Tommy, it broke your weak heart. It was like your little brother was a completely different person; his usually loud and upbeat tone was reduced to a quiet and broken one. He was the one that wouldn’t talk much, instead he would sit with you and eventually after a day or two (you think) of silence he would play his jukebox. But whenever he did talk (which was rare) he would tell you how scared he was seeing you like that on the table. 

As time passed, you could feel yourself slipping deeper and deeper into your subconscious. It was like you were fading away, but you couldn’t fight against it. You wouldn’t fight against it; you could feel your pain fading and it was a great relief. You only wished you could hear your family’s voices before you completely left them, they were fading as well. Eventually, everything slipped into nothingness and you felt… euphoric. 

When you opened your eyes, everything was black. You were sure that you had your eyes open, so why was everything so dark? Was this the afterlife? You expected it to be more… heavenly. However, you weren’t complaining; your entire body felt light and you felt waves of peace waft over you. This was nice. You didn’t have much time to relax while you were living. 

After a while of staring into nothingness and just peacefully floating in one place, you became restless. Sure this was nice, but your hands itched to tinker with something. You’ve never done well with sitting in one place for too long, that’s always been your weakness. You tried to push your body off from anything so you could at least float around, but that proved useless when there was nothing to push off from. When you tried flapping your wings- well, wing- you only succeeded in spinning in circles. At least you thought you were spinning in circles, the inky abyss was unchanging and it was starting to mess with your perception. Your senses felt like they were deprived, but the worst thing about it was the overwhelming silence. 

So, you talked to yourself to fill the ringing silence. You were merely voicing your thoughts, repeating your lessons you’ve taught Arthur over the last few weeks. After a while, you were running out of things to talk to yourself about. So, you sighed and crossed your arms. They were very pale, you were actually dead this time, huh? You could only wait to see your brothers and Arthur when it was their time, hoping that they wouldn’t come to you too soon. It pained you to remember that you would probably never see Philza again, but who knows; the universe has a strange way of working. 

“It’s nice to finally meet you, (y/n).” You screamed at the soft voice that cut through the overwhelming silence and whipped your head around. There stood a woman that looked to be in her early thirties with long black hair and tanned skin. You could not see the upper half of her face as it was covered by a crow mask, however her eyes glowed a bright white. She was smiling at you with melancholy and bittersweet happiness. The two giant white feathered wings sprouted from her back were glowing slightly. The powerful and intense aura that loomed around her was the complete antithesis of the gentle smile she was giving you. 

“Calm down,” she flew over to you and wove her hand in the air. You immediately felt a wave of calm ease over you. “That’s better. You’ve been through so much, my little fledgling.” Her little fledgling? That was something you’ve recently started to call Arthur. 

“Who are you?”

“Oh where are my manners? I’m Kristin, the Goddess of Death. I wish I didn’t have to do this, but I’m here for your life.” You hummed, “that makes sense.” She tilted her head slightly and somehow the eyeholes of the mask morphed into an eyebrow raise. Was that her actual face? “You’re not scared of death?” 

“No, I’ve already died twice- no, three times already. But this is- it’s different. Is that because I’ve lost my last life?”

“You’ll find out in due time. Ender, you’re everything Phil described you as and then some.”

You perked up slightly, “you know my Dad?” Her airy chuckle brought you even more at ease, “of course I do, he’s my husband.”

You gaped at her, “so does that- does that make you my mom?”

“Only if you’re comfortable with it, I wouldn’t want to push you into something you didn’t want.”

“I’ve always wanted a mom. D-don’t get me wrong, Dad’s done more than enough for me he’s an amazing parent-”

“I understand and I’d love to be the mother of someone so smart. You’re destined to do great things one day, my little fledgling.” You tilted your head slightly, “greater than being an inventor?”

She nodded, her black locks swaying with the movement, “greater than being an inventor. Our time together is coming to a close.” She flew over gracefully and pulled you into a hug. You reciprocated it. Her hug felt warm and welcoming. It was hard to believe that she was the Goddess of Death, you always thought Kristin would be ruthless and cruel. 

“You will face many trials and tribulations and you must persevere through them. This is indeed your reality, but you share it. Do not be afraid to ask for help. The world can be a lonely place, but remember that you are never truly alone.” 

She pulled away from you and placed a gentle kiss on your forehead, the beak of her mask poking you. Suddenly, the weightlessness feeling disappeared and you felt a tugging sensation from deep within your chest. Your body was sent flying through the abyss, the gripping sensation you felt in your inner chest felt very intimate somehow. After a bit of screaming, you were still flying through the void. You had no idea how long you were flying for, but eventually you just crossed your arms and went limp in the mysterious embrace. Aaaanny time now. 

Eventually you saw a pinprick of light far off into the distance and it was rapidly approaching you. You sighed out a drawn out “finally.” And watched as it came at you at mach speed. After you crashed into it, everything went white. 

You jolted up with wide eyes and looked around panting. You saw the walls of your childhood room? So you didn’t die? Then what the hell were you doing in the void? You were so sure that you died permanently. That you lost your last life. When you glanced out the window, everything was dark. When you sat up, you felt the familiar tugging sensation of the scar tissue around the base of your wing, except it was less intense and you had less mobility in your right shoulder. You glanced at the hearts on your wrist expecting to see three empty outlines. Instead, two ruby red hearts stared at you.

Impossible. Impossible. You were in your last life so even if you didn’t die, you should still only be in your last life. Your second life was taken from you in an explosion. It should not show up on your wrist. Furrowing your eyebrows, you ignored the sound of the door opening and footsteps rushing towards you. You ignored hands appearing in your vision and hovering unsure above your hand. 

You only looked up when the hand grabbed your wrist and blocked the two perplexing ruby red hearts. You saw Philza with a look of immense relief on his face. “How’re you feeling?”

“I don’t know.” You looked back at your covered wrist and took it out of Philza’s grasp, staring at the two red hearts again in confusion. “I-I should only have one life. Where’s Arthur? Ender, he’s probably so scared. Did you leave my prosthetic in the cave?” Your rapid fire questioning was stopped by a hand on your shoulder. 

“Slow down, you only just respawned.” You threw your hands up in frustration (well, you tried with your right arm, it only moved to about two thirds of your full range of movement before you felt a slight pain and a stretching sensation), “how the hell do I respawn when I was on my last life?” 

“You aren’t-”

“Yes I am! Fuck man, how do you forget that?! First time: Warden. Second time: explosion! I know I just died for the last time, so how am I still here?!” You glared up at him. It astonished you that he just forgot about the first two times you died. Who forgets their own kids’ deaths? It takes a real monster to forget things like that. 

“(Y/n), you’ve only died once and that was because the infection you got was too severe,” he put a gentle hand on your shoulder and pulled you into a hug. You pushed him away and seethed, “How do you not remember! Ender, did the last two and a half years just escape you? You’re fucking immortal, almost three years is nothing to you!” 

“Two and a half- (y/n). Two and a half years ago you were fourteen and you were barely just learning how to do tricks midair.”

“No, I’m twenty years old! How the fuck do you forget your own kid’s age?” 

“You turned seventeen six months ago, (y/n).” 

You ran a frustrated hand through your hair and laughed sardonically, “I’m not dealing with your bullshit right now. Where’s Arthur?” You stood up with shaky legs and swatted his hands away. “I don’t know an Arthur. Please lay back down, you’re-”

“First you forget my deaths, next my age, and now Arthur?! What the actual fuck is wrong with you? Where is he?” You gritted the last sentence out through clenched teeth.

“Who-”

“Curly red hair, freckles, always smiling, about yay high,” you flailed your hand from side to side rapidly at your mid torso, “your grandson. That ring a bell?”

“No because I don’t have a grandson. Sit down, I think I know what’s happening.”

“No. Not until I see Arthur.” You brushed his shoulder as you walked by him and out of the room. You could hear him following behind you, but you ignored him. After you ripped Arthur’s door open, you paused in the doorway. 

The entire room was decorated with Wilbur’s belongings. Instead of random bags of redstone dust and small contraptions that Arthur was too proud of to throw away, piles of sheet music and the occasional book was strewn about. Instead of the poster of you Arthur had hung up on the wall (you had laughed at it at first, he still geeked out over you even though you were his parent), a picture of the family was there. Despite it being a sweet picture (it was one of the very few ones of the family where everybody was smiling at the artist and not moving around), it shook you to your core. “A-Arthur?” You whispered in a broken voice. What was going on, where was he? 

You faintly felt someone put a hand on your shoulder. You however stood frozen clutching the door handle in your hand until you walked over to the nightstand. It was completely barren except for the glasses case sitting near the lamp. This isn’t right, this isn’t right at all. Arthur’s things should be there, not Wilbur’s. 

“No, no, no, no this isn’t right.” You broke off into mumbling while staring at Arthur’s (or Wilbur’s?) nightstand desperately trying to find the feather hidden somewhere. Once again, you felt a hand on your upper arm. “Everything’s right, (y/n).” You said nothing as you stared at the glasses case on the nightstand. “C’mon, let’s go sit down.” You barely registered him leading you gently back to your room and handing you a glass of water. “(Y/n)?” 

“Why is his stuff just- just gone? Everything was there before I left.”

Philza was silent for a moment, his feathers ruffling and brushing against your arm. “...Sometimes when a person’s been through something traumatic and they’re about to die, they sort of… make up their own reality without knowing that they’re doing it. It’s the brain’s way of coping. 

“This reality could last anywhere from a few days to years for them with the events seeming real, but in actuality only a few minutes have passed and nothing that the person thinks happened actually happened. It’s just the person’s subconscious mind playing out scenarios that they think would happen or wished had happened.”

You felt like you were previously walking on a stable sheet of ice before you were plunged into the icy abyss of unknowing. You felt several emotions coursing through your veins ranging from anxiety and frustration to grief and disbelief. The cup of water in your hands became incredibly blurry before you were pulled into his chest. He wrapped his arms and wings around you tightly and held your face securely against his shoulder. He started rocking you back and forth as you felt the tears silently leave your eyes and your breathing shudder. You felt yourself start to sob when a barrage of thoughts came and the reality of the situation hit you.

None of your inventions actually existed.

Your name was unknown.

The last two and a half years were pointless.

Arthur doesn’t exist. 

Your precious Artie, the little boy that idolized you, begged for you to teach him everything you knew, followed you around like a little duckling, held your feather against his chest as he slept, enthusiastically asked you if you could take him flying, your little fledgling, your pride and joy, your son, didn’t fucking exist. You were never going to see his smile again. You were never going to laugh with him as you took him into the clouds. You were never going to cook breakfast with him again. He was never going to give you magnets again. He was never going to ask you to teach him something or ask you to help him with his own inventions. He was gone and there was nothing you could do to get him back. 

“I- I prom-mised him that I’d never leave him.” You sobbed into his shoulder, clutching onto his shirt. “I fucking promised him and I’m never gonna see him again.”

(A/N): ok so a little explanation, chapters 4-mid 15 didn’t actually happen. It was in the reader’s mind as after they passed out in chapter 3. There was foreshadowing (esp in chapter 4, I consider chapter 4 to be the chapter where the brain is getting used to the illusion it set up (hence the title “what is real”)). It explains why the reader couldn’t remember their own death. The line “You were probably still in the cave bleeding out as your delirious mind turned stone into the comforting walls of your home. You were probably imagining hearing your dad’s voice in a last chance to comfort yourself as you neared your impending doom” was pretty self explanatory. In the last chapter, the souls saying “wake up, we need to get you out of here” and “don’t leave me” were Philza’s voice cutting through (”The voices ranged from... familiar to unfamiliar”)

DNP Rewatch: A Festive Day in the Life of Dan and Phil!

The 2014 DITL video! The last one had been back in August 2013. This is my absolute favorite DITL and probably one of my top five DNP joint videos of all time. Get ready for me to have way too much to say about it.

0:00 - sleepy morning + quiff Phil! We’ll see a surprising amount of that in this video.

0:05 - “almost a week till Christmas,” so they must have filmed this just a few days before it was posted

0:25 - no waking up Dan in “his” bedroom like in the first two DITL. Hmmm...this scene doesn’t seem staged at all...especially since Phil’s laptop is already open on the arm of the sofa. Unless he just left it like that overnight.

0:37 - love that the other advent calendar on the mantle in the one they made. 😂 There are 18 of the doors opened on it, so they’re probably filming this on the the 18th or 19th of December.

0:47 - they both jump into doing the theme music as soon as Phil says “titan”

0:57 - that is pretty late for them to be putting up the decorations! Phil looks sad about it too.

One difference from the first two DITL is they don’t even pretend that they’re going to see other friends/invite someone over. Just the two of them hanging out and they seem quite happy with that. This is probably the most “domestic” of the DITL videos. I love it so much.

Phil went to his parents’ on the 23rd to celebrate Christmas. He had Swedish food, was very excited as usual, got a stocking with a toothbrush and animal socks, and watched Guardians of the Galaxy. Dan went to his family’s on the evening of the 24th after a candle incident (lol, though I love that he was burning the candles even without Phil there. He started the tradition of yearly Christmas pictures of Colin. And also posted this.

‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ was released 9 years ago today.

*I wrote this text in June 2021.*

I watched my favorite movie today for the fortieth time. every time I watch it is a different experience and I never get tired of reviewing it. this movie has been part of my life from the first moment I watched it, I'm completely attached to each character and each scene. it's hard to put into words how important this movie is to me, maybe it's impossible to convey how much I love it. but, I've been writing for a while about every sensation and every little thing I notice in this movie, one of which I recently noticed while listening to Bowie's song, 'Heroes', when Bowie says "Though nothing will drive them away" and the one titled "nothing", Patrick is driving, and in another part he says "Though nothing, will keep us together", and sometimes Charlie or someone of the group moved away in some situation, Patrick who brought them together. and the last bit that says it "And we kissed, as though nothing could fall", the interpretation of Patrick's kisses with all the people he kissed in the movie.

I read the book as soon as I saw it for sale in a bookstore in my city for the first time, and soon I was very intrigued by the story and how things were developing. I must have been about 13 or 14 years old at the time i read it and I must admit I was confused by some things, I was very young and didn't understand some situations that happen, but it left me with my eyes open when I watched the movie and interpreted the scenes with the book links. Years have passed and every year I see this movie, at random times like today,or on dates like my birthday or Christmas.

This year I bought the new version of the book with the exclusive cover and unpublished excerpts and when this version was announced I almost cried with so much happiness and I was so moved, because this book, and especially the movie, are a part of me. I read the book again with more mature interpretations of the situations and was able to make interpretations of the situations and was able to increasingly feel the scenes and the feelings of the characters. the classic phrases are part of my life and make me reflect always, I feel super cliché thinking about these phrases because they have become so popular and maybe banal for some people, but they make me complete, the scenes and the songs and the characters in the movie and the hired actors are all perfect for their roles, I can't imagine other people playing each of them.

every little part has a piece of my heart and it makes me emotional to talk about how many people may not understand what it's like to connect so strongly with a character, movie and story. it's very difficult to express the relevance of this movie in my life, and every time i see it, i get sad, happy, hopeful and devastated too. but, I feel infinite, and ok, maybe it's coincidentally because the movie repeats that and Charlie's letter says that, but, I can understand why he says that and why I can feel it when I see this movie.

when i was 16 i started writing a book - lol-  i literally put myself in the role of "hello i'm charlie" but actually i'm me, in case i'm the character, but in case i didn't want to put myself as the protagonist, it was just putting experiences of my life, coincidentally as the author of the book wrote. i swear I didn't realize at first that I was copying the writing mode and the dialogues between the characters, but then I realized that I was completely influenced to do it that way because I ended up basing a lot on the author's writing mode and the letter mode that Charlie did. *a spoiler, I never got past 8 pages of this supposed book about a supposed character very like me*, but it's nice to read it every now and then because I like what's in there, even though it's pretty embarrassing.

I once tried to redo the tunnel scene with my friend, but it wasn't exactly as I expected, 1. because I live in a city that doesn't exactly have the tunnel that way and those lights, 2. because there wasn't one of those cars with opening at the back, so it was just the window, but it was good while it lasted, and yes, I put heroes playing. but my dream is to pass by the place where it was recorded and feel that scene three hundred times.

I don't know why I'm writing this, but I wanted to express at least 1% of how I feel about this movie. and how attached I am to absolutely everything in it. I wanted to thank you (I don't know exactly who because no one who made the film will read this here) but thank you anyway.

Wakana Spring Live ～magic moment～ 2021 Review

Note: I FINALLY got my package. Now that I watched the full live in HD, I thought I would share m thoughts and a little present below the cut ^_^ As always, I would like to encourage everyone to SUPPORT Wakana by BUYING her Blu-ray!!! Her sales numbers aren’t the greatest which is a huge shame since this is a solid release.

Overall thoughts: I got the Limited Edition of course since I couldn’t resist the pretty sleeve packaging, the bonus documentary (so insightful) and the photobook (scans coming up soon). It is quite pricey but totally worth the money, especially if you are among those fans who liked “Magic Moment” much more than Wakana’s debut album. The release comes with a gorgeous clearfile as tokuten so be sure to get it! Try going for the Regular Edition if you want to save money. As for the live itself, it was a pleasure to watch and I can see myself rewatching it a lot (skipping a few songs though :P). Wakana’s voice coaching lessons are definitely starting to pay off. She has so much stamina these days. Can you believe that this was her SECOND live performance of the day? Her vocals were solid, even during her high-demand power ballads. At rarely any point did she sound overly-screechy to my ears, there were certain sections that didn’t sound 100% smooth but those parts definitely didn’t take away from my  overall enjoyment. On a side note, this live was a feast for the eyes, Wakana looked absolutely beautiful in her white dress and I even liked her encore outfit even though it was a little “out there” XD During the more up-beat songs, her smile literally lit up the entire hall. Seeing her have so much fun on stage is healing. I feel like they may have gone a little overboard on the blurry filters from time to time but I guess that was on purpose. 

1.揺れる春: 6/10. This is obviously the perfect cute intro for a Spring Lives so I understand why Wakana put it here but I would have much preferred “breathing” as a grand entrance. Still so sad that this is the only song from the “magic moment” album that didn’t make it onto the setlist of this live. I know, we already got an official audio recording but I would have loved some video footage to accompany it :P Anyways, back to Yureru Haru. I haven’t really warmed up to the song yet. It’s not bad and I honestly love the verses since they are super precious and feel kinda nostalgic but the chorus doesn’t stand out imo. Also, her singing style during parts of the chorus isn’t my favourite and not overly flattering. 2.where: 4/10. Oh no!! I was hoping Wakana would be singing the “ohhhohhhs”. She could have easily done it during the start and middle part of the song since it wasn’t overlapping with her other vocals. This seems so rushed? Is it just me? I haven’t listened to the studio version in a while but I know that I quite enjoyed that and it definitely didn’t make me feel as fidgety as this. Don’t know what it is exactly but it keeps me from getting into the song. I guess this is the biggest disappointment for me because I wanted to like it. 3.君だけのステージ: 4/10. I will admit it, this is not my favourite song. It’s just way too long :P But it is a very good and energetic performance, really no complaints when it comes to Wakana. But experiencing it live at the venue would have made it so much better for me. Oh well, nothing that can be done about it. The scat part at the end was a pleasant surprise. Would have loved to hear more of that. 4.442: 100/10. Honestly a masterpiece. One of Wakana’s best solo songs up-to-date and so very perfect to show off her vocals. Hearing it live like this with a band arrangement is a revelation. I love the wailing in the beginning and all the strength she conveys throughout the rest of the song. 5.ひらり ひらり: 3/10. Another song I haven’t warmed up to yet. No real thoughts. It’s one of those songs that’s just very forgettable, not bad per se but there is just nothing at all that attracts me to it. :-( As you can tell, I wasn’t entirely happy with some of the setlist choices. Wakana obviously wanted to include all the album songs but some of them are just not my cup of tea T_T 6.夕焼け: 6/10. This is one of the pieces that gets better every time I listen to it. And the latter half of the song is generally much nicer. I am always surprised by how much I actually like it when it’s over :P 7.アキノサクラ Acoustic ver.: 7/10. I am distracted by that harmonica sound-alike thingy Satoshi Takebe is playing XD Still, I have come to really like this song last winter so it is always appreciated, especially the acoustic version. Wakana is struggling a bit during the ending but nothing too bad. 8.myself: 100/10. Utter perfection. So much better than the studio version. And I am not saying this because I disliked the studio version, quite the contrary actually, I LOVED it but these two versions are honestly miles apart. Wakana’s live performance feels so much more raw and emotional. And her vocals in this are pretty much flawless, I can’t even begin to describe how this song makes me feel. A perfect ballad for Wakana. 9.メロディー (Cover): 8/10. My first reaction was boring. But by the third listen I was totally smitten and now it’s among my faves from this live. Be sure to give it a few tries, it really grows on you. I can tell why Takebe would choose this for Wakana. 10.元気を出して (Cover): 8/10. Ahhhhh, so freaking cute and old-school. Nothing beats a nostalgic, fluffy pop song from the 80s. I am here for this content. The “lalalas” at the end are LOVE. 11.オレンジ: 6/10. I like the song but I have to be in the mood for it. And here we have that fake harmonica thingy again. I enjoy the sound of a harmonica about as much as the sound of an accordion (which means not at all :P) but it fits the vibe of the song so I am okay with it. The bridge is usually my favourite part but Wakana’s delivery wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked. It was nice to have this right after “Genki wo Dashite” because both are encouraging pick-me-ups. 12.恋はいつも: 10/10. One day I wanna hear her sing the “baby, baby” part!! Please! Another absolutely highlight, you all know that I ADORE  this song, I could listen to this FOREVER. It’s such a shame the corona guidelines do not allow the audience to sing along because the ending is so much more powerful if everyone is actually singing instead of just clapping. 13.Happy Hello Day: 8/10. Such a feel-good piece. Initially I didn’t like it much but seeing it performed with an audience during her Music Party and now here, has really made me fall in love with it. I have mentioned it before in my initial reaction to the YouTube leak but I wish she would have sung some lalalas at the end just as she did during her Music Party. 14.magic moment: 9/10. I KNEW I would love this song more once I got to hear it live. I still feel like the composition is a bit choppy and thus not as flowy as I would have liked from a power ballad like this but OMG, Wakana’s live performance is EVERYTHING. Blown away by her powerful vocals, she OWNS this song 15.時を越える夜に: 10/10. Two power ballads back to back. What more could I ask for? I know not many people liked Wakana’s solo debut but I personally always thought it was perfect for her. I consider this to be one of her best songs. Say what you will about Takebe but he certainly knows how to make Wakana shine, at least in my opinion. And the song has only gotten better with every live performance. Although I think I preferred the version from her Voice Tour. So very glad we got at least one track from Wakana’s first album. The original setlist actually included Kinmokusei and Kioku no Hito which are two of my faves (they were later exchanged with the two covers). 16.春を待つ (Kalafina Cover): 8/10. Despite this being one of Keiko’s favourite Kala-songs I never could bring myself to really appreciate it. It’s just an okay song for me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy it quite a bit but I don’t go out of my way to listen to it. However, I very much loved Wakana’s cover though, she does a good job singing everyone’s lines and since the original doesn’t have any harmonies her solo performance doesn’t feel too lacking. 17.あとひとつ: 10/10. Always a treat. Can’t believe this STILL hasn’t gotten an official release :P  But I understand Wakana’s reasoning, she wants to keep this song a unique live experience and it really is. I can’t help but tear up whenever she is singing this.

Documentary: I haven’t watched all of it yet but OMG, this is so cool. The first 20 minutes are dedicated to rehearsals. I love seeing Wakana like this, just being her cute dorky self. But poor baby, it was hard seeing her this exhausted after the big studio rehearsal (that’s what the gif is from - being her overdramatic self, she literally dropped dead to the floor). The second half of the documentary is Wakana talking about the production of the live and the different songs of the setlist.

I'm applying for some career stuff hopefully near the end of this month. I know I'm going to miss them a lot when I leave home and I wanted to give them each some kind of gift. I thought that the playlist would be a bit more thoughtful than something like a physical object. Music just hits different and I think it'll be a fun project to work on over the next few months. All of our personalities are so different which also makes it more interesting. I think they'll be surprised but happy in the end.

Girl With No Heartbeat - (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)  After a near death experience, JJ is saved by a girl in the water. When he and the Pogues find her washed ashore the next day, they are more than surprised to discover that she isn’t your everyday girl. (mermaid/siren au, canon divergence)

But then she got pregnant and her boyfriend left and suddenly she found herself unable to do all those things she was once able to. When they say it takes a village, she wasn’t entirely sure they meant a bunch of teenagers. (post-canon, I haven’t decided who the love interest will be or if there will be one at all, so that’s why its here)
