La La Land (2016, Damien Chazelle)
08/11/2023
La La Land is a 2016 film written and directed by Damien Chazelle.
The film tells the love story between a jazz musician and an aspiring actress, played respectively by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, made a contemporary musical that pays homage to the classic musical films produced between the 1950s and 1960s. The film's title is both a reference to the city of Los Angeles and the meaning of being in the "dream world" or "out of reality". Chazelle wrote the screenplay in 2010, but couldn't find a studio willing to finance the project. Only after the success of his 2014 Whiplash did the project gain interest from production companies.
The film received universal acclaim from critics, who praised Damien Chazelle's direction, Stone's performance and the film's soundtrack, receiving top marks from many critics and proving to be one of the most popular films since its theatrical release.
It was the opening film of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where Stone won the Volpi Cup for Best Female Performance. It received 14 nominations for the 2017 Oscars, equaling the record of films such as All About Eve and Titanic, ultimately winning 6 statuettes. It won seven Golden Globes, out of seven nominations, the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and many other international awards, becoming one of the most awarded and appreciated films of 2016.
On a hot and busy Los Angeles highway, the first meeting takes place between Mia, an aspiring actress who works as a barista at a café in the Warner Bros. Studios, and Sebastian, a jazz pianist who dreams of opening his own place. After yet another failed audition, Mia's roommates, seeing her down in the dumps, convince her to go to a sumptuous party in the Hollywood Hills, at the end of which, walking home, she is attracted by music and enters the club where it comes from.
A few months later, the two meet at a party where Sebastian is playing in an 80s cover band, and it is from that moment that they begin to see each other as friends, despite the strong chemistry between them, discussing their passions and their respective projects for the future. Sebastian invites Mia to the cinema to watch Rebel Without a Cause and she accepts, forgetting a previous commitment she made with her current boyfriend Greg. The two end the evening with a romantic dance at the Griffith Observatory.
Only a few people attend Mia's show. Disappointed and embittered by the negative criticism received and by the lack of Sebastian, Mia decides to leave Los Angeles and her aspirations to return to her parents in Boulder City, Nevada.
Being also a musician, Damien Chazelle has always had a strong predilection for musical films. His vision for the film was to "take an old-fashioned musical, but portray it in real life where things don't always work out", as well as paying homage to all the people who move to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams. Chazelle conceived the idea for the film when he was a student at Harvard University, along with his classmate, Justin Hurwitz. The two explored the concept in their senior thesis through a low-budget musical about a Boston jazz musician called Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.

I love the Rho Supreme crew so far! Imagine if they had a Sumdac with them. Also, will there only be a Bumblebee and Prowl lookalikes or will there also be ones for Jazz, Arcee, Magnus, Blurr, the twins, or any of the cons?

Jeff Parker ETA IVtet — Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy (Eremite Records)
Tumblr media
Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy by Jeff Parker ETA IVtet
Jeff Parker’s latest is a double album recorded live at the Los Angeles venue referenced in the title in the spring and summer of 2019 and the spring of 2021. In the context of the guitarist’s body of work, this quartet, with Jay Bellerose on percussion, Anna Butterss on bass, and Josh Johnson on sax, extends his minimalist approach. Both Johnson and Parker make extensive use of pedals that expand the sound, taking the place often filled by keyboards. The continuity of mood and tone in this trance-inducing set is remarkable, with, for example, nothing to distinguish the pre- and mid-pandemic dates.
The side-long tracks, averaging over 20 minutes each, are named only for the dates on which they were recorded and thus lack any point of reference beyond the music itself, which occupies a space somewhere between jazz and ambient similar to that explored by Parker with and alongside groups such as the Natural Information Society and tracing back to his time with Tortoise. The sound has a live feel but no audience noise. Apparently entirely improvisational, the music is nevertheless purposeful, evolving without reliance on crescendos or quick shifts in tempo or instrumentation.
A colleague at Dusted described this recording as “a groover not a smoover,” which gets to the heart of the matter: all four players remain committed to the collective project rather than relying on one another to support their soloing. To be sure, there are some fine solos, such as the elliptical guitar figure beginning around 2:45 on “2019-07-08 II,” the sax at around 11:00 on “2019-07-08 I,” and the back-to-back guitar and sax workouts in the first half of “2019-05-19” that develop organically with the support of the rhythm section. These and other moments, including the stately opening of “2019-05-19” after what sounds like glitchy organ and the emergence of a guitar (?) line that sounds like a Bitchin’ Bajas synth in synch with the drums around 13:00 on “2019-07-08 II” help shape the listening experience into a kind of journey.
Simultaneously soothing, playful, and thought-provoking, Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy is an outstanding recording with the potential to appeal even to those for whom Parker’s work with Tortoise or in other settings hasn’t resonated. The liner notes rightly compare the set to such landmark live recordings as Lee Morgan’s Live at the Lighthouse in which a band, rather than running through well-known pieces, uses the setting to make a fresh statement.

‧⁺✧ Meet Cute Mondays ♡°‧
Starfleet Academy AU: In one of the classiest meet-cutes, a rather nervous cadet Will Riker takes the wrong corner and bumps into this lean Klingon and his steaming hot Raktajino – and immediately fears for his life. Apologizing over and over, he tries to prevent damage. “Jesus, I’m so sorry. Sorry, man! How can I make this up to you?”
The Klingon takes a deep breath. And much to Will’s surprise, his answer is, “Maybe you could get me a new one?”
Will stares. “What? A new... uniform? Ah, a new coffee?”
The Klingon tilts his head, smirking at Will. “Chances are high you’ve heard of it before. It’s a rather popular beverage around here.”
“Y-yeah... I think I got it.”
The Klingon straightens up. “As you’re in a hurry, how about we postpone this date to tomorrow morning?” he asks in a warm baritone voice that sends a shiver right down Will’s spine. How could he say no to that?
