Chp. 8: Introduction of the Hashira

Once everything settled, Ubuyashiki turns to the twins once more. His warm smile still on his face.

“Since you two have arrived, I will have you stay in the quarters that the Corps have cared for since your mother was here last. You will stay at my home until the battle ends.” Ubuyashiki says and the twins nod.

They bow to him.

“Thank you for your hospitality.” They say in unison.

Waving his left hand, two female servants are quick to appear from the inside of the house and bow to Ubuyashiki.

“Please, follow us.” They say and begin to walk on to the engawa, guiding the twins to the right of the house. Stepping onto the engawa, the twins follow behind the women, as they were leaving the obvious feel of multiple eyes continued following them until they turned a corner and the feeling disappeared.

After a short time, the servants guided them to a ryokan telling them to remove their shoes at the door and asking if they would like something to eat.

“Tempura should be fine for me.” Aicha tells them as she removes her bag and sits on the cushion in the tatami room.

“Just a big bowl of ramen.” Amara includes to their order and sits across the table from her sister.

The servants nod then bow, closing the door behind them. Once their footsteps were gone, the twins looked around the new area.

“Very nice place. I’m surprised mother hadn’t told us that we would receive our own quarters.” Aicha mentioned and Amara nods in agreement.

“Maybe she wanted us to figure it out on our own? This is our journey we have to embark on.” The older twin comments.

“True.”

There was suddenly knocks coming from the shoji doors behind Aicha. Raising a brow to who that could be, Amara stands to her feet and walks over to the shoji door, slightly opening it to find pink and green hair.

“Eh?” Amara utters then her eyes follow up until she finds the beaming features of a young woman. Her green eyes were literally pulsing with heart eyes and her excitement could be seen from a mile away.

“Hello! I’m Mitsuri Kanroji the Love Hashira! May we come in?” She says excitedly.

Amara’s eyes looked to the left to see the butterfly woman from earlier and a tall man with scars making a ring on his forehead. He was blind Amara noticed, along with his prayer beads clanking on his left hand as he put his hands together.

“Namu-Amidabutsu.” He utters quietly making Amara hum in thought.

“Ummmm, I guess you can come in?” Amara questioned and the pink haired woman squealed in excitement.

Amara allows the shoji door to open up more and all three came into their quarters. Aicha watches in interest as the three people came inside and made themselves comfortable at the chabudai.

Closing the shoji door, Amara walks over to her sister’s side and sits next to her watching the three new guests bow before them.

“Hello, my name is Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira. Pleased to meet you both.” The butterfly woman introduced.

“Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira. Blessings to you and your family.” The large man bowed.

“I am Amara and this is my sister, Aicha.” Amara introduced them and Aicha bowed to them.

“Well, the reason that we are here is that we became fascinated with your presence.” Mitsuri explains and that makes the twins raise an eyebrow.

“Fascinated?” Aicha parrots.

“Yes! I have heard many stories about Ikkoku clan and being in the company of the daughters whose mother almost destroyed Muzan? I just had to meet you both!” Mitsuri rhapsodized.

“We’re not celebrities. We’re just here to help.” Aicha says.

“Oh but you must be! Surely you have been destroying demons since your arrival here!” Mitsuri beams and the twins sigh.

“Actually we have barely interacted with demons on the way here; it would seem since the beginning of our mission, the demons had already been killed by the Corps or there wasn’t any demons at the villages we have passed through.” Amara explained and the Love Hashira hummed in understanding.

“If I may,” Shinobu speaks up as she places her hands neatly on her lap.

“By coming to the Corps, do you think that you will follow in your mother’s footsteps?” She asked and the twins give her a confused look.

“Why would we do that?” Aicha asked.

“We are here for the same reasons I’m sure you all here for as well. We’re not here to collect trophies, celebrity status, or notability. We too have faced the horrors of demons and made a vow that we would make the world demon free. We care not if our lives will be taken, if it will benefit for a better cause.” Amara asserts, Aicha nodding in agreement.

“A suicide mission?” Shinobu questions and the twins give her a hard glare. Mitsuri squeals in surprise.

“Call it what you wish, but we have already made up our minds.” Aicha tells her.

“What of your reasons of being in the Corps? Your position as a Hashira seems to be of high ranking and I assume with that title, you all are on a suicidal path yourselves. Why should our mission be any different from yours?” Aicha asks and the three Hashira are silent.

Amara then sighs and shakes her head, the feeling of a migraine was blooming in the right side of her head.

“I wish not to repeat our reasonings for being here at the Corps, nor is it our business to know what you are here fighting for but, if you do not understand our commitment to the Corps or our clan, then you may leave.” Amara says.

“We didn’t mean to offend!” Mitsuri’s hands raise to show she meant no harm.

“What will you do once the war is over?” Gyomei asks, changing the subject.

The twins thought for a moment and then turn to answer Gyomei.

“Return home, or perhaps leave our village to find another place to live and work.” Aicha says.

“I want to open a blacksmith shop. I’ve always had a knack for making weapons.” Amara tells him.

“And you?” Amara asked the Stone Hashira.

“I…I am not sure what I would want to do after we defeat Muzan.” He said.

“Ohhh, you could run a temple Gyomei!” Mitsuri chimed in and the blind man hummed in thought.

A knock was heard at the door again, and everyone shifted their gaze to the shoji door sliding open to show the servants from earlier knelt by the shoji door.

“Excuse us. We have returned with your meals.” The brown haired woman says bowing.

“Oh, we didn’t mean to interrupt your meal!” Mitsuri said and the twins shook their heads.

“It’s fine. I’m sure if you would like you may stay for a meal as well?” Aicha offered.

“Hopefully with a more pleasant atmosphere than earlier.” Amara’s eyes cut to Shinobu who was smiling with her eyes closed.

Caw! Caw!

A crow flew over the to the door and flapped its wings in alarm.

“The Hashira Meeting is beginning! Please report to the Master’s quarters immediately!” The crow announces and the three Hashira stands to their feet.

“I’m sorry that we have to cut this short but, duty calls!” Mitsuri says excitedly and the twins stand to their feet as well.

“Well, I should say that it was a pleasure to meet you all. Please, if you would like to come by, do not hesitate to.” Aicha says politely.

Mitsuri nods happily and the three Hashira bows to them. The twins return the bow and the Hashira leave out the opened doors, passing the servants who kept their heads bowed and brought over two trays of food.

Sitting back down, the twins thank the two servants and immediately start eating.

The illuminated lanterns in the tatami room were the only light source that was allowed to show the Ubuyashiki family’s faces and the Hashira that sat in front of them.

“As you have reported, the demon’s carnage has increased more than ever.” Ubuyashiki says his smiling face dimming a bit at the news.

“Meaning that the threat to human life is greater than it’s ever been. We must bolster the ranks of the demon slayers. What are your thoughts?” He asks the Hashira.

Sanemi is first to speak, “The incident on Mt. Natagumo made the reports crystal clear. Our caliber of demon slayers have been dropping tremendously. Most of them are rendered useless, I question their trainers, they must be blind.” He guffs.

“You’d think they could at least tell if someone’s competent or not.” Sanemi carrying on.

Uzui Tengen, the bedazzled Sound Hashira smirks and places a hand under his chin in thought.

“That kid from earlier seemed competent to me, that blow he landed on you was quite flamboyant, Shinazugawa. He’s got potential.” Tengen says and Sanemi grits his teeth.

“With the increase in the human population, it becomes harder to control and unify them. The times have changed in this era.” Shinobu chimes in.

“Other than those who had their loved ones brutally massacred, or joined the Corps, or those who have hunted demons for generations, to ask anyone to harness as much or even greater resolve and drive to produce results would be cruel.” Gyomei said.

“Considering that young boy ran into the Twelve Kizuki so soon after joining the Corps. He could have the power to draw them in! We barely get the chance to confront even one of them! It makes me envious!” The fiery red and blonde hair Flame Hashira Rengoku Kyoujurou exclaims.

“Agreed. But the fact that a Lower Five caused such a drastic move, indicates that Muzan is nowhere near Mt. Natagumo. In the case of Asakusa, whenever Muzan wants to hide something, he creates a diversion to throw us off his trail.” Ubuyashiki sighs.

“It’s really quite frustrating. But demons are still devouring humans, gaining strength and surviving. For the sake of those who have died there is one thing for us to do:

I believe that, with who are present today, the Corps’ Hashira and the Ikkoku clan’s members involved, I’ve assembled the finest unit since the first Breathing swordsmen of the feudal era.

Uzui Tengen. Kyoujurou Rengoku. Shinobu Kocho. Mitsuri Kanroji. Muichiro Tokito. Gyomei Himejima. Sanemi Shinazugawa. Obanai Iguro. Giyu Tomioka.

My children, I look forward to your success.”

The meeting was adjourned an hour later and the Hashira leave their master’s residence to return to their respective homes.

He tells his daughters that they were free to leave as well and Ubuyashiki sits quietly in the dark, a smile still graced on his lips.

“Muzan Kibutsuji, I swear I’ll defeat you if it’s the last thing I do. We will bring you down without fail.” He vows quietly.

Chapter 7: The Oath

Four days passes by, and finally the twins find themselves at the illustrious Butterfly Mansion.

The building was beautifully designed and the flowers making a path down the sides leading to the entrance guided the women.

A small girl no older than eight, wearing her hair in low twin tails with two blue butterfly clips spots the approaching women and pauses her walk.

“Um, how can I help you?” The girl asks.

The twins stop in front of the engawa and bow to her, she clumsily bows in return.

“We are here to meet with Kagaya Ubuyashiki. We were told that we would be able to meet him with this,”Amara digs into her satchel to grab the two envelopes and the girl steps down from the engawa to look over the envelopes.

“Please wait here for a moment.” The girl says and quickly steps back onto the engawa, running to the left as she leaves the twins to watch her go.

Minutes pass as the twins patiently wait for the girl to return, Amara looked down at the two envelopes in her hand. Urokodaki said that these two envelopes would allow them to get into the Corps and then some. What was the ‘then some’? Returning them to her satchel, Amara began to twirl a twist between her fingers.

Hearing footsteps, a person wearing a black gakuran jacket and hakama pants with a black head covering comes to stand in front of the twins. They bow, and stand up straight with their hands by their sides.

“Please follow me! I am Hojo, a Kakushi and I will guide you to the Demon Slayer Corps!” Their announcement yells and the twins cringe at the yelling.

“Very well.” Aicha says and Hojo jumps off the engawa and runs back down the path that they just came from. The twins are by his side as he continues running and it looked like it was getting hard for him to keep up with the run for long.

It was a good thing he stopped running because he was out of breath and turning red in the face. He used a shaky hand to point out where they would go and the twins followed his direction until they reached another path where soft rocks littered the ground and a garden sat in front of a home.

As the twins approached the garden, they could hear talking which quickly led to yelling from multiple people. Rounding the corner of the house, they stopped when they saw the scene in front of them.

A man with black hair in different lengths was pressing his elbow into Tanjiro’s back. The pressure he was applying to his back was making Tanjiro cry out in pain and the twins spring into action pulling out their weapons and phasing behind the man with their blades under his chin.

The man’s multicolored eyes frowned in annoyance and looked up to see two women glaring down at him. Their second weapons was held up to the other people who were standing next to them, threatening them to try something if they dared.

“We will take your head before you continue to hurt him.” Amara’s words were deadly and the man only continued to watch them. His wrist was then snatched from Tanjiro’s back, another man wearing a haori with two different patterns.

The twins kept their blades under the man’s neck, bringing it closer as he tried to move away.

“Nezuko!” Tanjiro yells out and scrambled to his feet running towards the engawa. The twins turn their attention to inside the house where Nezuko was standing under the shade of the house, but her appearance was different from before.

Her mouth was salivating and her fists were clenched so tight that blood was beginning to drip from her palms. Her pink eyes were focused on the blood dripping from the scarred arm of a spiky white haired man. His sick smile seeming to try and goad Nezuko into taking a bite.

Aicha moved to try and stop him but, Amara told her not to move in their mother tongue. Aicha looks to her twin in confusion.

“ We must see if she really can resist blood as we have been told .” Amara speaks in their language. Aicha sighs and shifts her gaze back to Nezuko who was literally shaking from trying so hard to resist her urge.

After what felt like hours, Nezuko turns her head away in disgust and Tanjiro sighs in relief, the twins also relax their tense shoulders.

“What happened?” A man with shoulder length black hair asks the two girls standing next to him. They held his sides as they turn to the situation behind them.

“The demon girl turned her head away in disgust.” The one of his left says.

“Despite being stabbed by Shinazugawa three times and then flaunting his bloody arm in her face, she was able to resist biting him.” The right one says.

Hearing the sound of swords being unsheathed, the twins looked to see that the other people present had their weapons pointed at them. Even the one they were holding hostage had his out as well.

“Aicha, Amara!” Tanjiro cries out in alarm.

“How dare you two come here and infiltrate the Corps!” The tall silver haired one says. Amara looks at him bored.

“You harmed Tanjiro. Quite frankly, we have every right to kill you for that. But,” Amara puts her Knobkerrie away and moves to dig into her satchel once more. Their swords move closer to the women as Amara pulls out the two envelopes and holds it above her head.

“I have something for Kagaya Ubuyashiki.” She announces and that seemed to irritate almost all the men and women around them.

“How dare you use Ubuyashiki-sama’s name so loosely!” The spiky white haired man yells from inside the house then jumps from the house, his blade coming to sit under her chin. Amara looks at him uncaring then turns to the man standing with the two girls.

“It’s you isn’t it?” She asks.

“I am Kagaya Ubuyashiki. You must be the two women that Urokodaki spoke about in his letter.” He says and the people around her begin muttering to themselves.

“Everyone please, put your weapons away.” He orders and slowly one by one, everyone puts their weapons away even Aicha. Only Amara and the spiky haired man was left, the woman raised her sword to look like she was going to stab him then sheaths it, all the while looking right in his eyes.

“Shinazugawa-san, please put your sword away.” The man says, his tone was motherly and warm. The man grits his teeth then moves back to sheath his sword as well.

Amara approaches the engawa and hands the envelopes to one of the girls. They take an envelope each and open it. Aicha stands next to her sister watching the girls quietly.

“Lord Ubuyashiki,

My daughters Amara and Aicha will be coming to the Demon Slayer Corps on request by your previous letter, as well on behalf of the Ikkoku tribe. They are our clan’s most powerful and most loyal members, who are willing to do everything in their power to help bring down the demons that terrorize our country.

As the great-great-granddaughters of the infamous samurai Yasuke, they possess unique abilities that I believe will benefit to your organization.

Please take into consideration that if you ask of their help, they will do so without hesitation.

The girl on the right read.

The gasps from everyone made the twins raise their chin up almost smugly.

“Your mother was the Deadly Crane?!” The pink and green haired girl squeals.

The twins turn around to look at the now lined up men and women and gives them a look then turning back to Ubuyashiki.

They bow at the waist with and Ubuyashiki gives them a smile.

“We are here to serve you at any means necessary Ubuyashiki-sama.” They say in unison.

Holding the shoulders of the girls beside him, Ubuyashiki returns a half bow.

“We are very glad that you have taken interest to help with our cause. We will happily use your services.” He tells them.

Both parties return to their standing positions.

“Master,” the two haori patterned man suddenly speaks up.

“May I ask how there is any relation with the Corps and their clan?”

“Children,” Ubuyashiki addresses everyone and they all focus their attention on him.

“The Ikkoku clan are our most powerful ally since the Corps began. In our most treacherous times, the Ikkoku were the ones who aided us. We have every reason to put so much respect for them that we are indebted to them. And the fact that The Deadly Crane’s children is right here in front of us? The woman who was in the front lines in our last battle with Muzan? We must show our gratitude.” Muzan boasts and the twins turn around to look the group over.

They couldn’t believe that these two women were here right now. Especially, from the most dangerous and powerful clan on the countryside, their mother going toe to toe with Muzan before he slithered away back into the darkness where he belonged.

“The Deadly Crane?” Tanjiro breathes out in confusion.

Placing a hand on her hip, Amara gives the group a raised brow and turns her attention to the two patterned haori man who was expressing a surprised expression.

“We’re not here to gain popularity, we want those demons gone as much as you all.” Amara speaks up.

“Please don’t hesitate to ask for our help, we will support with all we have.” Aicha says.

“Excellent. Now then,” Ubuyashiki shifts his gaze to Tanjiro who was watching the scene in confusion.

“With Nezuko’s denial of human blood, it has been proven that she passed her test. However, everyone me thoughts will not be the same, as some will not accept Nezuko. However with her abilities, I believe that can be useful.”

“Sanemi and Obanai, please take into consideration of the fact that Nezuko will not harm any humans.” Ubuyashiki tells the two men and they obey his wishes.

“Tanjiro we have concluded our business with you. You may step back now.” Ubuyashiki says.

The woman with a butter fly in her hair raises her hand.

“Master, in that case, allow me to take them into my mansion.” She smiles then claps her hands twice.

“Take them to the Butterfly Mansion and heal their wounds.” The butterfly woman says and two Kakushi comes through. They take Nezuko’s box, then another takes Tanjiro, carrying onto their back.

When they are gone, Ubuyashiki hasn’t got the chance to speak an entire sentence before Tanjiro is running back to the garden with both Kakushi jumping on his back.

“Please allow me to head butt the man with the scars! For all the times he stabbed Nezuko, let me head butt him!” He yells out.

Aicha laughs quietly while Amara grins in his direction.

Tanjiro is able to get back to his feet but the Kakushi hold him back. Three rocks hit him in the head and Tanjiro falls forward onto his face.

“Interrupting the master is quite rude.” The green tipped boy says monotonous while juggling another stone in his hand.

The Kakushi bow in forgiveness on behalf of Tanjiro then are quickly dismissed by the boy.

Tanjiro is thrown over the shoulder of the Kakushi as they leave the garden, but not without Ubuyashiki telling him one last thing.

“Give Tamayo my regards.”
