From the start of the day, Wei Wuxian had felt icky. Having awakened in the bathtub, he couldn't even bring up the energy to reach out to the bottle of Emperor's Smile to take a sip. And if he could've, he would've been too tired for it.
Of course, Lan Wangji had caught this odd lack of energy of his husband. He'd reached for the bottle himself, presenting it in front of Wei Wuxian, who had his eyes closed and only opened them to notice after a few calls of his name.
Worrying, to put it simple.
"Wei Ying? You alright?" Lan Wangji had carefully asked. Of course, he'd known the only honest answer. Even if normally Wei Wuxian was a bit slow when waking up, this time, it'd been off. As if he'd been in pain.
Even so, Wei Wuxian responded with a mumbled, "I'm fine." His voice being hoarse and exhausted proved the opposite.Immediately, Lan Wangji had picked Wei Wuxian out of the bathtub and wiped him dry, the now forgotten bottle of liquor tossed somewhere onto the desk.
When the skins made contact, Lan Wangji's face's colors changed drastically. Wei Wuxian definitely had a fever.
He blinked when Wei Wuxian suddenly drew in a sharp breath, the man shuddering in his arms as he released a violent sneeze. And another one.
Wei Wuxian opened his eyes and stared up at Lan Wangji, totally pitiful. Lan Wangji's heart ached as he put him on the bed and tucked him in. Wei Wuxian looked so vunerable. As if he could break at any moment. And so, he touched him as careful as one ever could.
"Lan Zhan... 'm cold... ah..."
Lan Wangji did not know for how longer he could see his husband like that before breaking down. There were more pressing matters, though.
Pulling the blankets up to above Wei Wuxian's chin, he softly carressed Wei Wuxian's face. It felt so hot that he thought his husband would melt away soon. Maybe it wasn't the right thing to tuck him in so warmly... but uncle and brother had always told him that one should sweat the fever out. The heat of the body would allow it to create more white bloodcells which could eliminate viruses or bacteria. And Wei Wuxian was so cold... this was the right thing to do.
"Is it better?" Lan Wangji asked softly, sitting down next to the bed. He reached out once again to touch Wei Wuxian's face. He just couldn't stop himself from doing so. He couldn't stop himself from touching Wei Wuxian, even if it was in such a small way.
Wei Wuxian was trembling, but at this touch, he sighed softly. He relaxed visibly. For one second. Immediately after, his brows twitched and his nose scrunched up. He tried to force out a warning,
"Lan Zhan, I'm g‐ gonn– h-hhuh-hh'AGTShsh–!"
Startled, Lan Wangji pulled back his arm. At the gesture, Wei Wuxian's eyes teared up. "I- I'm sorry..." he mumbled, sniffling and starting to cry softly. The tears were hot and streaming off his face.
Silently, Lan Wangji grabbed a handkerchief to wipe Wei Wuxian's face. Only after doing so, he wiped his own hand. He tossed the handkerchief aside and wiped the stream of tears with his sleeve. However, it kept coming. Poor Wei Wuxian. This truly was heartbreaking.
Lan Wangji's heart, in fact, broke.
"Don't cry, Wei Ying..." he said, a lump in his throat. Wei Wuxian was sobbing quietly and curled up in a ball, facing Lan Wangji as his lip trembled. "Lan Zhan..." he whispered, voice shaking and hoarse.
"Wei Ying..." Lan Wangji responded quietly and carressed Wei Wuxian's hair. He'd never seen him so sad and worked up.
Wei Wuxian's nose seemed to have a bit of trouble. This time, Lan Wangji had learned the signs of an upcoming sneeze, so when Wei Wuxian's face scrunched up, he pulled his hand away. That way, he wouldn't get sneezed on and Wei Wuxian wouldn't need to feel sorry.
But it wouldn't come out. Wei Wuxian groaned in frustration, trying to reach up to rub his nose. However, with how he was tucked in and how he'd lost his strength, he couldn't move. So Lan Wangji reached out instead. He carefully rubbed Wei Wuxian's nose, not wanting to hurt him. Originally, it was to rub the sneeze away. His carefulness, though, caused the opposite.
Frantically, Wei Wuxian tried to move away. "I'm go-gon-hheh– L-Lan Zha– hahh-hh'EGshtsh! Hh'EgShTshh! HH'NKgSht! Hhh–" In the end, he had been able to reach up and pinch his nose shut. His face flushed in embarrassment caused by fever. "S-sorry..."
"No need." Lan Wangji took another handkerchief and wiped Wei Wuxian's face clean again. "Let them out." With those words, he tried to give an encouraging smile. He was bad with consoling people, but with his husband, it was different.
Wei Wuxian mumbled, "O-okay." Then, he moved his hand away from his nose. "It's gone, now..." He sniffled softly as he spoke.
Hesitantly, Lan Wangji extended his arm. He knew that previously, Wei Wuxian had held back at least one sneeze. Brother and uncle had told him that it was unhealthy to hold them back. So, he did what he did.
Again, he softly rubbed Wei Wuxian's nose. It had helped just ago, so it would work again, right?
Sure enough, Wei Wuxian drew in a breath as his eyes fluttered closed and his face twitched. Lan Wangji pulled his hand back. Too early.
Wei Wuxian tried "L-Lan Zhan, it's not– yet–", caught between the feeling of a stuck sneeze and having to sneeze so badly. And so, Lan Wangji continued what he'd done just a second ago. And then, Wei Wuxian gasped.
"Er-gege, it- 's- h-hahhh– I'm g– h'EgShTshh! Hh'AGhkstsh! L-Lan– hh'Ekschtshew! Zhan– h-hh-hh'EGTShsh! Hhh'aAgShtsh! Agh..."
Quite startled, Lan Wangji stared at Wei Wuxian. "I-is it okay?" he asked hesitantly. Wei Wuxian nodded tiredly, but more conciously than before. "Y-yeah. I couldn't stop... but it feels better afterwards. Thanks, Lan Zhan..." He closed his eyes and layed down in a comfortable position: curled up in a ball with his face directioned at Lan Wangji.
"No need. I'm glad Wei Ying is okay", Lan Wangji smiled, relieved. He used his handkerchief to wipe Wei Wuxian's face once again, then used it to wipe his own face and hand, where some droplets had landed.
Wei Wuxian asked, "Did I sneeze on you?"
Lan Wangji responded, "Somewhat. It is not a big deal."
Wei Wuxian, "What if you fall sick?"
Lan Wangji, "Then, Wei Ying will take care of me."
"... Yes, this Wei Ying will."
Smiling tiredly, Wei Wuxian yawned. "But first, he's gonna take a nap. Er-gege, join me... 'M gonna take care of you... if you fall sick, anyways..."
Lan Wangji nodded, returning the smile. He took of his shoes and outer and middle robes and folded and placed them neatly in the right position. Then, he climbed into the bed and layed down next to Wei Wuxian, hugging him close. The temperature had already gone down a little.
"Do you want me to inform anyone?" Lan Wangji asked, only now remembering.
Wei Wuxian responded tiredly, "Nope... jus' hug me... 'til I get better... 's jus' a cold... let's be silent... I'm going to sleep..."
"Yes. I'll inform someone if it worsens. Good... night. Afternoon." Lan Wangji pressed Wei Wuxian just a little closer to himself.Wei Wuxian, "Mhm... Nighty night... afternoony afternoon... let's be silent now, actually... I can't... I'm really going to sleep now... sleep well..."
Lan Wangji knew that, if he were to say anything more, he'd trigger Wei Wuxian to say more as well and stay awake longer. Even if it was just one word, like 'yes'. So he remained silent.
After a minute or a few, Wei Wuxian's breath had steadied completely. Soft snores came from him.
Lan Wangji smiled ever so slightly. "Sleep well, Wei Ying."
