Can you do something where Y/N is sick and Harry has to take care of her please?
i actually had written something similar to this before so i present you a lengthy blurb;
You were pretty sure if you got invited in to hell it would feel something like this.
Hot. Sticky. But chilled.
You had come down with a concerningly high temperature. Along with the added luxuries of a deafening headache, cold sweats and an upset tummy. Your body was burning all over, as if it had just been freshly cooked in the oven but you felt colder than ice. It was a confusing juxtaposition, but there it was.
You'd called Harry, since he was in the studio recording his new music and asked him to come home early. You didn't even get to the reasoning of why he should come home before he hung up, telling you he was already vacating the premises. You hated to be that needy girlfriend who had to call about nearly everything, but Harry loved it more than anything. He loved the fact that you needed him. It gave him purpose, apparently .
You couldn't work out whether you regretted asking him to come home, or whether it was a blessing. It was a very fine line.
It was a blessing because, he looked after you like a mother would her child and made sure he stood by your side any time you found yourself lurched over a toilet. He made you chicken soup from scratch and even tested it to make sure it wasn't too hot, or salty - despite being a vegetarian himself. He even made you honey and lemon tea, which he had to run to the store for the honey. When you say run, you mean run. He didn't want to leave you alone at all, so he put on his running shoes and sprinted to the shop and back. However, it was a slight regret because of how fussy he was over you. He loved it to bits - nursing to your every need.
You truly believed you didn't deserve Harry. He was just too kind and pure for his own good. You were unarguably lucky. Laying on what felt like your death bed, didn't feel so lucky though.
It was now 10 pm and you could hear Harry turning on the alarm for downstairs, the loud beeping noise preventing you from sleep. That's all you'd done all day. Sleep. You thought it'd be more magical than it was. It was just uncomfortable though, because of how cold and hot you were.
Your much better looking other half trudged through the bedroom door within a minute of the alarm going off. He was only wearing checkered pyjama bottoms and a white t-shirt and yet he made it look like Gucci Runway 2021.
The jingling of keys signalled Charlie was also present. Charlie was your 2 year old Golden Retriever. He was beautiful. When you and Harry has moved in together 2 years ago you'd managed to persuade him to get a dog. Within a few weeks of moving in you had a 5 month old puppy running around your house. He was your best friend, no doubt about it. He was also ridiculously photogenic.
"Hey Chaz!" You cooed as Charlie walked over to your side of the bed, where you were snuggling down under the sheets. You reached out your hand to give him some loving and attention. You could tell by the small smile and sparkling eyes that he was one happy boy.
"Alright, buddy. Let's leave mum alone." Harry came behind Charlie to manoeuvre him into his bed, which was in the corner of the room. It was more like a big cushion. He started to whine after being forced to leave you - having not seeing you all day. Harry was strict in keeping him downstairs so not to disturb you whilst you were sleeping.
"H it's alright, let him on the bed. He can curl up on my feet." You sympathised with Charlie, as you always did, hating to hear or see him upset. Harry was like the 'bad-cop' when it came to parenting Charlie, because you were too sweet to say no to him.
"You're one spoilt boy, aren’t you?" Harry messed around with Charlie, before telling him he could get up on the bed to see you. Charlie leapt on the bed and wandered over to give you all the kisses he could, before Harry came to calm him down - as you really didn't have the strength.
"I missed you too, Chaz." You quietly laughed, not wanting to set your headache off even more.
"You gonna let me kiss mum now?" Harry rhetorically asked, but as he came over to you Charlie laid down on you so your face was buried underneath his body. You could feel him panting with his adorable tongue out above you, as he hid you from Harry.
"Someone's jealous."
"Feeling like a bloody third wheel over here." Harry tutted and you laughed until you got hot with the movement.
"Harry? Can you move him please?" You whined as you tried to shuffle around.
"Okay Chaz. Let's let mum get some sleep, alright?" Charlie is slowly removed from you and ends up curled on top of your feet, keeping them warm for you.
Harry slipped into the covers and shuffled his way over to you, putting the back of his hand over your forehead and hissing quietly at the simple touch.
"Baby you're so hot." Harry complained.
"I know." You teased with a wink at him, taking his worry out of context and turning it into a flirting compliment.
"Oh piss off!" He chuckled and wrapped an arm around your waist to bring you closer. "What am I going to do with you, baby?" Harry then planted only a few delicate kisses to your lips - not wanting to overwork you and your tired body.
••••
You woke up with drowsy eyes to find you're in bed alone.
Your throat was incredibly dry and your whole body was sticky from sweat. Your pyjamas were damp and your face looked like it'd just been drowned in a rainstorm. It was disgusting. Still, you brought the duvet up to cover yourself more, as you let out a dramatic shiver. Why was it so cold?
Mixed into the background noise you could hear the cheering of crowds and it really confused you, until you looked at the wall and noticed the football was playing on re-run on the TV. Manchester United Vs Manchester City. You hated that you knew that just from their football uniforms, but that's what you get for living with a football-crazed boyfriend.
You noticed Harry emerge from the bathroom, a washing up bowl in his arms. He came and sat down in bed, the bucket of water to his side. "What are you doing?" You quietly asked, peering up at him through tired eyes.
"Oi, you're meant to be sleep y’minx." Harry told you off.
"I can't. I'm too uncomfortable. I'm hot, but i'm cold. I also find it hard to sleep without you next to me." You huffed out in annoyance.
"My poorly baby." He leant down to kiss your forehead, "c’mere, baby." He urged.
He helped you move, seeing as your body was really weak, so you could lay down against Harry’s body. He was sat up against the headboard as you nestled down between his legs, your back to his front. It was a lot more comfortable than before - probably because Harry was closer to you. Charlie noticed the disturbance and waited for you to stop moving around, before maintaining the job of guarding your feet.
Once he was happy in his position he fell asleep again, making you jealous of his ability to do that. Especially now.
"Why's the football on?" You asked, motioning towards the TV.
"Had to keep myself awake somehow." He explained, but it only made you more confused.
"Why?"
"So I can take care of you, y’muppet." His words actually melted your heart - more than chocolate could melt on your forehead right now.
After you'd settled, Harry reached into the bucket and drained out a cloth. He made sure all the excess water was cleared before moving it away from the bucket. You hummed in appreciation when he placed it against your forehead, rotating it to the back of your neck also in order to relax and cool you. It made you realise just how hot you were.
"I think i'm dying, Harry." You groaned as the nausea came over you again. Harry kept a firm hold of the cloth on your forehead, dabbing gently and careful to not let any water drip down into your eyes.
"No you're not, baby." Harry gave you a light-hearted laugh.
"Well, living shouldn't feel as shitty as this H." You grumbled, not appreciating his lack of understanding.
“Then just let me take you to the chuffing hospital!" He exclaimed, making Charlie stir slightly.
Harry had been demanding you go to the hospital all day and all evening, but you were too stubborn to go. That, and you were terrified of hospitals - more terrified of needles and blood than anything else. However, you were starting to reach the point where you were giving in to his request, though. It was becoming unbearable to sleep and harder to breathe. You were worried for yourself.
"I don't like it." You pouted like a child, as Harry wrung the cloth through the fresh water again.
"I don't care whether you like it or not, Y/N, I really think we should go. More like need." Harry insisted and you could tell he wasn’t giving up without a fight. You didn’t want that either.
You hated how he was right.
It was only going to get worse from here, and you didn't really want to be alive when that was going you happen, so going to the hospital to get checked over and drugged up seemed like the best option to go for. The more sensible option.
"Fine." You finally accepted, Harry slinking his arms tight around your waist after discarding the cloth in to the bucket. He nuzzled his head into the crook of your neck and planted an abundance of kisses there, your skin burning just to the touch.
"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." He repeated in-between kisses.
•••••
It took 20 minutes to get in to the car. 20 minutes.
All because Charlie was reluctant to letting you get up and go. So Harry had to dress you into a more appropriate attire, with a dog sat on your lower body. It was then half an hour later that you were in the hospital.
The hospital was quiet at this time of night and for that you were grateful. It was obviously a night where little numbers of people were doing silly things to get themselves hurt. There was the odd patient for a minor cut injury and there were a couple of people in for burns. There was even a woman in because she accidentally superglued her hand to a bottle of superglue - ironic, but painful.
You sat patiently on Harrys lap, waiting for someone to escort you to a cubicle. You were freezing cold, to the point where your teeth were chattering - your outside body was giving off the opposite temperature. You tried to get as close to Harry's warmth as possible, pushing your body against his.
"You're alright baby." Harry shushed you, as you let out a small tremble.
"If I do die—"
"Which you won't." Harry chuckled.
"I know, but if I did I want you to know that I love you." You told him. Even though he's heard you say it a million times before, it still made his heart flutter as you spoke each word.
"I love you, baby." He kissed the side of your head. "But you're going to be just fine, so no more talking about you dying okay?"
"Why? It's only a natural thing." You pointed out.
"Sure, but I don't want to think of a world without my girl living in it. So zip it before I make you."
You never thought of dying as a world without Harry before now and it wasn't the time to start thinking about it either. It was a horrible thought and you understood why Harry didn't want you speak about it. That world would be so dark and empty and you hated thinking about it.
Harry was called to the front desk to fill in some forms for you, since your hands were too cold and shaky to do it for yourself. He accidentally wrote 'Styles' as your second name, before realising his mistake and scribbling it out.
“Shit.” Harry went red in the face and chuckled over his silly mistake. His hand was shaky and you smiled at how he got so flustered over something so simple. You rested your hand on top of his, bringing his attention to you.
“One day.” You told him and he leaned to give you a kiss on the lips. You couldn’t help but feel like his lips were a future promise to make sure he wouldn’t have to scribble out his second name the next time it was written next to yours.
The doctor saw you shortly afterwards and you thanked your lucky stars that there was no injections or removal of any blood involved, Harry sticking with you the whole time. Turns out you were suffering from a moderate fever, but the doctor said with good rest it should pass. The doctor had given Harry permission to make a big fuss over you - explaining how he was going to love it and you were going to hate it - and to make sure to come back with even the slightest worsen of the fever. You got given a prescription list of various medications that you'd need to take over the next week or so. After collecting the drugs, you were back in the car on the way home.
"Told you you weren't going to die." Harry smiled, happy to have you still by his side, whilst holding your hand over the gear console.
"Unfortunate for you, I guess."
"Will you shut you, y’bloody nuisance. You know I can't do life without you, Y/N." He spoke softly, squeezing your hand tighter to assure you that he's going nowhere.
"Same here." You smile at him and he smirks back at you with his dimple-loving smile.
"You’ll always be it for me, baby." Harry speaks, before you drift back off to sleep.
Happily.

have some latinenatural for day 1 of @spnprideweek dean trying to come out to himself
Dean didn’t like going down this neighborhood. It never made him any money, plus the block is a dead end, so he always ends up circling back around with his heavy cart. His Tio always yelled at him for it, wasting precious time in a block where nobody paid him any attention because these Americanos aren’t used to people walking around selling comida.
Pero Dean always had one customer that always came running out whenever Dean came around, and he was worth the extra minutes he had to petal in the hot sun.
“Dean!”
Dean hears his name, expecting it but still feeling relief from hearing it. He looks ahead, his fingers stopped ringing the bells that have become background noise to him by now, and sees his favorite customer running out of the big white house Dean can only ever dream of renting. He wouldn’t ever dream of owning; he can’t have dreams so impossible.
Dean petals a little bit faster until he breaks in front of the pretty face he sees at least three times a week.
“Cas.” Dean practically beams at him even though he was trying to stay cool. Smooth. “Mi Angelito.” Dean winks, and he doesn’t miss Cas’s eyes widened and ears blushing at the nickname. “How you been?”
[continue reading under the cut or read on ao3]
Cas was dressed in his usual white button-up and slacks but they looked a lot more ruffled up than usual. His hair looked unkempt as it curled at the ends—Dean wasn’t complaining he loved it—and his typical neat shirt was wrinkled with sleeves pulled up to his elbows. He looked the guy up and down before his eyebrows creased together.
“You okay, Cas?”
“Yeah.” Cas sighed, shoulders slumping as he reached to run his hand through his hair—that probably explains the bed head—before smiling back at Dean with a deep breath. “Yeah. I’m fine.”
“If you say so.” Dean jumps off the bike and walks over to his cart. “The usual?”
“Please.”
Dean nods once before getting to work on a raspado de vainilla for Cas. He works in silence for a minute, just the sound of the ice scraping between them before Dean looks back at Cas.
“You know, si quieres, you can talk to me.” Dean looks up to see Cas was already watching him. “I know I’m a nobody, but I hear nobodies are great to vent to.”
“You aren’t a nobody, Dean.” Cas’s expression softens at the words. His eyes brighten as he looks at Dean, almost as if he can see into his soul. Then, just as Dean was about to drown in those baby blues, Cas looked away. His fingers started to twitch as he looked sheepishly at the ground. “Plus, my problems are small. I can deal with them by myself.”
Dean looks away, packing the ice into the cup before reaching to pour the vainilla as he talks. “Yeah, I know you can, pero; I just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to.”
Cas is nothing but a customer that Dean has been crushing on—it was a small, slow, and scary realization. The only reason they’re on a first-name basis now is because Cas once left his name tag on, and Dean asked what it meant.
Dean handed Cas his raspado across the cart, Dean needed to keep his distance, but he knew when Cas reached for it, their fingers would touch; he looked forward to the simple touch each time.
They did, and Dean’s breath catches in his throat before he works on chicharrones, lots of limon, and a little bit of chile.
“But I get it, you know, if you don’t want to talk to me.” Dean looks up to see Cas still staring at him but with eyes filling with tears. “Holy shit.” Dean put the bag down and walked around to stand by Cas’s side. He grabbed a napkin from his cart and handed it to Cas to wipe his eyes. “Dude. Dude, please no llores. Don’t cry. People are gonna think I did something to you, and I’ll lose customers.” Dean tries to joke, but Cas doesn’t crack a smile. Instead, he rolls his eyes.
“Dean, nobody but me ever comes out here.”
Dean shrugs. “Potential customers then.” Dean grabs another napkin and reaches to wipe the tears that were already falling. “Estas bien, Angelito. Talk to me.”
“I-I shouldn’t.” Cas accepts Dean’s kindness for a second longer before gently moving Dean’s hand away. “You’re working. Let me just pay you so you can stop wasting your time here.”
Dean nods, stepping away from Cas so as not to seem pushy. As much as he loved being so close to Cas’s face, he didn’t want to seem creepy about it. This neighborhood has eyes everywhere, and Dean couldn’t really risk having his cart, his livelihood, be taken away just cause he has a small crush on the white boy.
So Cas gives him the exact change to the quarter and smiles sadly before he waves goodbye. Dean waves back as he gets on his bike to pedal out of this neighborhood and into a more comfortable one. He didn't ring the bell until he was out of there.
Cas doesn’t come out to see him the next day or the day after that, and now he has to wait until next week to see him. If Cas still wanted to see him.
“I don’t know why you still go over there,” Sam says as he helps Dean unpack the car.
Dean’s side gigs included selling his homemade food Friday through Sunday—he can almost call himself a caterer—while on Thursday, he preps during the day and works as a janitor in a big law office at night. Today was Thursday, so Dean had to wake up early to go to the big marketplace downtown. They sold the chicharrones de harina in bulk for cheap, and they had all the ingredients he’ll need to make the syrups for the raspados himself.
Sam rarely comes with Dean to get all these things since he was always busy with school, but today he came along on the day that Dean ran out of maiz azul. It just meant more trabajo para los dos.
“Or why you still sell raspados when you make more money on the weekend with your food.” Sam continued as they struggled to carry the bag of maiz to the kitchen. They both let out a heavy breath when they finally dropped the bag in the kitchen. Dean’s going to spend the next hour cleaning and soaking the damn corn after this. That doesn’t even include cooking it and finally making the damn masa.
“El trabajo es duro but I like it.” Dean pats Sam’s shoulder before they go back to the car to get the rest of the things. “I like going down neighborhoods and saying hi to people.”
“I get that pero why do you have to go to their side of town?”
Dean doesn’t know how to answer that.
He hasn’t told anyone about Cas. About how one day he was bored and wandered over to that neighborhood only to find Cas laying on his front lawn with a book covering his face. Dean, for some reason, couldn’t help but to ring the bells louder, startling Cas. Dean laughed for half a second before a book went flying to his face, knocking him off his bike. Cas learned too many cuss words in Spanish that day, but the big bruise was worth it.
Still, Dean didn’t want to tell anyone about Cas. Afraid to even speak of him because that would mean that his crush was real. That he had actual feelings, romantic ones, for another guy.
He knows que su Tío no lo va sacar de la casa pero todavía Dean tenía miedo. He was scared to admit this part of himself was real when it felt like a sin in his culture. ¡Ser gay es una cosa pero bisexual! ¡Ni madres! That doesn’t exist. Not where he is from.
So he’ll keep it to himself. Keep Cas as his secret fantasy and nothing more.
“The houses are nice to look at. One day, Sammy!” Sam was already groaning at Dean’s words that sounded more like an old man’s recurring ‘when I was your age’ stories. “One day, I’ll get us a house like that! One where we can each have our own room. And bathroom.”
“Yeah. Yeah. Whatever. Let’s just finish this so I can go back to my homework.”
“¡Estas pendejo! After this, you’re gonna help me clean the bathroom and throw away the trash before Tio comes home.”
“But Dean,”
“¡Pero nada! ¡Piensas que soy pendejo como tu, pinche mamón! Don’t think I don’t know you spend that time babeando por tu novia.”
“Dean!” Sam quickly passes him in a huff of embarrassment while Dean laughed, following Sam back to the car to get more groceries.
When Monday rolls around, Dean forces himself to come down Cas’s street again. The bells rang softly at first, only getting louder as he came closer to the house. He didn’t see a car in sight, so he thinks maybe Cas isn’t home.
He was already pedaling away when he heard someone call out to him. He hits the breaks half haphazardly, and the gallons shake on his cart, threatening to fall out. He was about to turn around, but then he realizes he hears footsteps running closer, and then he hears heavy breathing by his ear.
“Fuck.” Cas hands rest on his knees as he tries to catch his breath. “Are you-are you trying to run away from me?” Cas looks up with a teasing smile, it was beautiful, and Dean didn’t realize how much he missed him until now. “I am your only customer around here, so that’s a pretty bad business decision if you ask me.”
“I-I didn’t think you wanted to see me.” Dean could have joked around with him, but instead, his mouth decided to kick the conversation off with some honesty. Dean looked down at the bike handles as he talked. “Since you didn’t come out last week, I just figured-”
“Oh.” Cas stood up straight as he ran a hand through his overgrown hair; his clothes looked neat again, though. “I didn’t mean to make you think-”
Dean holds his hand out to stop Cas from talking, feeling embarrassed with every word. “Para. You don’t have to explain. No me debes-you don’t owe me anything.”
“I know that, but I want to. Talk, I mean. If that’s okay with you.” Cas looks at Dean with soft, warm eyes, a drastic difference from the red-rimmed eyes from the last time they saw each other. “After you’re done with work, of course.”
“I um-I usually head home around six. I can um,” Dean rubbed at the back of his neck, not meeting Cas’s eyes as he carefully says. “I can come by after if you want.”
“I would like that.”
Dean's head shoots up to stare back at Cas, who looked shy, pero siempre más guapo que la última vez que Dean lo miró.
At that moment, Dean wanted to lean in and kiss him more than he has wanted to kiss anyone in his 26 years of life, but he won’t. He still wasn’t sure if this was Cas asking him out as a friend or as something more. He was scared, but he knew his heart raced in excitement more than anything.
Dean finally broke away from the staring contest as he cleared his throat to get off his bike. “Todavia quieres-Do you still want your raspado?”
“Oh. Sure!”
It was silent while Dean made raspado, but he couldn’t wait for their fingers to graze again when he handed the cup over to Cas.
“Just the raspado today.” Dean still loved when Cas said it, trying not to laugh even though he loved Cas’s embarrassed blushing. Cas reaches into his pocket, but Dean reaches to touch his shoulder to stop him.
“On the house.” Dean holds it out and just like before their fingers touch, burning him.
“No, Dean, I couldn’t.”
Dean shakes his head to stop him from arguing any further. He jumped back on his bike and looked back at Cas as he said, “You can get me something later. Is seven okay?”
“Seven is…perfecto.” Cas flinched at his Spanish, but Dean couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Pues, te miro mas tarde, Angelito.” Dean reached to pat Cas’s cheek before he started pedaling away.
“Dean! I don’t know what that means!” Cas calls out to him.
Dean doesn’t turn around to respond, mostly to hide the stupid shit-eating grin he had on his face. “I said I’ll see you later!” But he does wave goodbye, ringing the bell as he goes.
Dean really liked him, and it brought fear into his heart pero al mismo tiempo; he hasn’t been this excited to just be around someone in such a long time. So maybe this is his time to accept that maybe, for sure, he is crushing hard on a guy.
Dean sighs as he stops on the sidewalk to hang his head and quietly whispers, “For fucks sakes, soy un pinche gay.”
Well, at least he can admit to himself—sort of.

The Worst Wingman - Dust and a Goddess
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1 / 3)
Jean x Reader
Word Count: 5.3k
Warnings: mentions of homophobia
Summary:  Jean knew you better than anybody else, so why was he so good at picking the worst people on the planet for you to go on dates with. You were persistent to find a boyfriend this year and you thought Jean could help you find the perfect man, but apparently he loves to watch you suffer. If only you knew the perfect man for you was the one setting you up on all of these dates.
Notes: I posted this on my Ao3 first, but I thought I’d post it here too. So, please enjoy!
First Saturday
Another Saturday night meant another shitty date with another uninteresting and weird guy. You knew Jean hand-picked these dates that he sent you off with, but it seemed he didn’t know you or them at all. Every single date was just another bust, undeniably and irrefutably.
And, this date was just another on the already long list of bad dates.
“So,” Your date said with a smile, “You’re good friends with him, aren’t you?”
You nodded with the wine glass close to your lips. He had asked you the same question nearly fifteen times in the last fifteen minutes. It was as if he couldn’t believe it himself. As if he were surprised, or maybe even a little bit jealous.
“Yeah,” You said with a fake smile, “We’re in the same friend group. I met him freshman year, when I became close friends with Mikasa and she introduced us-”
“How is he?”
“Huh?”
The redhead smiled wide, “How is Eren? What’s he like as a friend?”
You raised your eyebrows and placed your glass back on the table, “Eren?”
The redhead nodded excitedly. He was nearly on the edge of his seat, leaning towards you like a child about to hear a war story from his grandfather. It was odd that the boy had gotten caught on the idea of Eren being friends with you when you had just explained how Jean was the one who set you up on the date.
“Eren is- um,” You looked around the small restaurant, trying to find inspiration for a way out of this conversation from the other diners, “He’s cool.”
The boy is physically upset about your discretion, “And?”
“And,” You involuntarily continued, “He’s- uh, he’s very nice. He-uh he helps me with my homework, and helps me study quite a bit.”
It was all a lie, but only partially. Sure, somebody in the friend group was really nice and helped you with homework and helped you study, but it wasn’t Eren. It was Armin who was the nice one, but you didn’t know Eren well enough not to switch the two names when talking with the boy in front of you.
“That’s awesome,” The redhead said with an admirational sigh, “I bet he’s super helpful. He’s definitely the type to not give up until you know everything, for sure.”
“Oh.” You grinned at your empty dinner plate. “For sure. He’s the best. He’s super dedicated, and he always makes the harder information easier for me to understand. He’ll word it in ways that he knows I’m more comfortable with.”
“I’ll have to join you two, sometime.”
You looked at the boy with furrowed eyebrows, “You want to join me and Eren while we study?”
Boy, is he going to be upset when he finds out Eren is actually an adorable blonde boy with big ocean eyes who’s not nearly as blatantly mean. Also, it’s a bit strange the redhead wants to go on a study date with you and somebody else. Isn’t he at this date for you? But, all he’s asked you about all night is Eren.
“Of course,” The boy said with a smile, “I would just love to see him again.”
You giggled lightly to yourself, “Do you want me to get his number for you?”
Though the comment was purely a joke, the boy didn’t flinch nor smile. He just stared at you with a look of defeat in his eyes and he almost looked angry. His eyes never left your face, his mind not finding an ounce of humor in your question.
His reaction caused your smile to quickly falter, “Do you actually have a crush on him?”
The redhead rose from his seat, “I have to use the bathroom.”
You furrowed your eyebrows, “Right now?”
“Yes,” The boy’s voice came out harsh, “Right now.”
“Oh, okay.” You watched as the boy walked off towards the bathroom. And, once he was out of earshot, you pulled your phone from your purse sitting on the back of the chair and phoned Jean.
The phone only rang once before the call was picked up. He spoke a half-assed greeting above the sound of yelling in the background. You knew he was with Connie and Sasha tonight and you knew they were playing video games from the noise coming from behind his voice.
“Don’t hey me,” You spat angrily through the phone, “This guy is insane, Jean, he’s fucking weird.”
Jean was now laughing, “How is he weird?”
“He keeps asking about Eren.” You took a quick peek at the male’s bathroom door. “He offered to go on a study date with me-”
“That’s nice of him.”
“-And Eren.”
“Oh,” Jean said, “That’s weird. Eren doesn’t even study with you, he’d have to be smarter than you to be of any help.”
“I may have lied to him.” You took a quick swig of wine from the glass and then turned back to the bathroom doors.
“Aw,” Jean said with a smirk, “Poor Floch.”
“Floch,” You said excitedly, nearly knocking the discarded fork from your plate, “That’s his name! I forgot it about two hours ago, but didn’t have the heart to ask him.”
Jean was uncontrollably laughing on the other side of the phone. It wasn’t like these types of calls were foriegn to him. You normally called Jean in the middle of a crisis, and most of your crises these days happened mid-date when the boy did something weird and left to go to the bathroom.
“You’re a horrible date,” Jean said between his giggles.
“It’s not a normal name.” You held the wine glass to your lips. “I wouldn’t have forgotten his name if it were Brian or Nick. It’s his mom’s fault I forgot his name.”
Jean smiled into the phone, “Now, you’re blaming his mom for your ignorance, how cruel.”
You couldn’t help but grin as well, “Also, I think he has a thing for Eren.”
“Really?” Jean takes a moment to remember something. “That actually makes a lot of sense. I met him through Eren because they were in the same chemistry class last semester. He seemed reluctant to go on the date with you until Eren told him he should, then he was all for it. I thought it was weird, but not weird enough to be concerning.”
“It’s not weird nor concerning,” You said sweetly, “He just has a crush and he doesn’t know how to deal with it, it’s endearing.”
“He’s actively homophobic.”
“What?” You peek at the bathrooms and notice nothing has changed. “You set me on a date with an active homophobe?”
Jean shrugged, “I didn’t think about it.”
You shook your head angrily, “After this date, I am coming straight to your apartment and I am giving you a piece of my mind, Jean Kirstein.”
“Oh no,” Jean said with a smile, “I’m really scared, she used my last name.”
“You should be really scared. I’m bringing my baseball bat and everything.”
You took another peek at the bathroom and then checked the timer on the call. Seven minutes and fourteen seconds was how long you had been on the phone with Jean and how long Floch had been in the bathroom. Sure, it could be reasonable, but you still got a weird feeling from the whole thing.
“‘You okay?” Jean asked endearingly once the silence between you two had settled.
“He’s coming back,” You lied, “I gotta’ go.”
“Okay, just-”
The call ended quickly with one press of your finger. You put your phone back in your purse and let the bag fall to the side of the chair. You looked around the beautiful restaurant and tapped your fingers impatiently against the clothed table.
You leaned to your side in order to get closer to the couple beside you. At the table sat two people: one with long brown hair and wide glasses dressed in a tux and the other with short dirty blonde hair also dressed in a tux.
“Hi,” You said to the brown haired person to your immediate right, “Could I ask a favor of either of you? It’ll only take a minute, I swear.”
The brown haired person smiled widely, “Of course!”
“My date, a redhead, went to the bathroom nearly twenty minutes ago, and I can’t go into the boy’s bathroom-”
“You want me to go?” The brown haired person’s eyes lit up with excitement. “I can go see if he’s still in there, or if he’s sick, or if he’s dead - God forbid, but how interesting, right?”
You nodded with a smile, “Yes, thank you, please. I’m sure he’s not dead, but I’m just worried.”
“Don’t worry until I come back with news.” The brown haired person stood up and left, heading towards the bathroom.
You watched the nice brown haired person go off towards the restrooms. You watched them weave around tables, even stopping now and then to peek over diners’ shoulders, looking at what they had decided to eat for the night. They were strange, but in an endearing way - something you weren’t entirely used to seeing on these dates.
“You know,” The blonde guy spoke up suddenly, snapping you back to reality, “They’ve done that a few times on our dates before, as well.”
“Hm?” You turned to the brown haired person’s date.
The blonde guy smiled, “My date, they get interested in something in the bathroom and don’t bother coming back out for half an hour. The first time is scary, but you’ll get used to their curious mind.”
You grinned weakly at the nice man, “Yeah, I have a feeling there won’t be anything to get used to because there won’t be another date.”
The blonde boy furrowed his eyebrows, “Oh?”
“He wasn’t the best date I’ve been on, nor the best person I’ve been on a date with.” You turned towards the bathroom in time to catch the blonde man’s date making their way back across the restaurant with a frown. “In fact, he’s the first date to ever crawl out of a bathroom window to get away from me.”
“I’m sure that’s not what happened,” The blonde man said with a worried glance at his date. You weren’t sure how you knew it, but you were entirely sure of the redhead’s escape.
“He’s gone, dear.” The brown haired person placed a gentle hand on your shoulder as they sat back in their seat. “The window was pried open, I assume he crawled out of it.”
You nodded with a fake smile, “Thank you, for checking. I can pay-”
You reached for your purse, but the brown haired person shook their head, “No, no. Don’t even try to pay me. In fact, let us pay for your meals, it’s the least we can do.”
You shook your head quickly, “No, I can pay for them, but thank you.”
“No, he left you high and dry and-”
“You’ve already done enough for me tonight.”
“-You don’t deserve to pay for a meal you didn’t even enjoy.”
While the brown haired person was distracting you with a back and forth battle of who would pay for what, the blonde man waved down a passing waiter. He mumbled something to the waiter, pointing at your table over his shoulder. The blonde man pushed a small plastic card into the waiter’s hand. The waiter nodded pityingly, running off quickly towards the hostess’s table at the entrance.
“No,” You said with another shake of your head, “You don’t have to pay for a taxi, I dont need one-”
But, you did need one considering Floch was your ride here.
“No,” The brown haired person continued, “Let me pay for your wine. In fact, have our wine. It’s the least we can do.”
“No, I don’t need more wine-”
The waiter was back and the blonde man finally spoke up over the argument between you and his date. He held two slips of paper in his hand and looked at you both with a small smile.
“Hange,” He said to make his date stop debating with you, “It’s okay, she doesn’t need your insurance card. And, ma’am, don’t worry about the bill, it’s already been paid for, and you don’t owe me anything in return. I’ve been in your shoes before, and I wish somebody would have done this for me.”
“Sir,” You said quickly, “It’s really not that big of a deal-”
“Not anymore,” The blonde man said with a smile, “Next time you come to this restaurant, just bring somebody you trust. I promise, not everybody is as awful as that boy.”
You bit your lip to keep the newly created tears from falling. You couldn’t help the overload of emotions happening in your throat and eyes. You didn’t normally cry so easily in front of strangers, but these strangers were overly generous. And suddenly, you were remembering the last ten dates that all ended just as horribly. It seemed like nothing was working out in your favor anymore.
“Thank you,” You said with a large smile contradictory to the tears that now fell down your cheeks, “I-I don’t know where to find those not awful people, but I really hope I will someday.”
“Oh no!” Hange said as they quickly wrapped you in a tight hug. “Moblit, look, you broke her.”
Moblit giggled with a shake of his head, “I’m sorry I broke you, dear.”
You shook your head into Hange’s shoulder, accidentally wiping the tears on the shoulder of their black tux. You couldn’t express to Moblit how badly you wanted to find not awful people, and how badly you wanted a date that didn’t end horribly. It was just more complicated than that, and it seemed awful people were the only ones Jean could offer you dates with and the only ones he thought deserved dates with you. So, what did that say about how he viewed you as a person?
You spent a few minutes crying into Hange’s shoulder, mumbling incoherently about boys and school and your pot-smoking next door neighbors who are way too loud when they have sex. They listened to your tangent intently, nodding along, as if they could understand any of your words.
Once you had wiped the tears from your face and thanked the couple profusely some more, you made your way from the restaurant. You knew you could call a taxi to Jean’s apartment, but the weather was nice and his apartment wasn’t too far away. So, walking seemed like a convenient money-saving way of getting the whole date out of your mind.
You walked down the street of town, but once you got to campus, you slid the heels from your feet and into your hands. You walked across campus with your shoes balancing on your fingers like the morning after a horrible one-night stand.
Eventually you made it to Jean’s apartment building and found your way to his front door within a few minutes. You knocked on the wood with your heel and weren’t too surprised when the door opened almost immediately. Jean stood in the doorway, still shouting at the other two over his shoulder.
“Hey,” Jean said once he finally turned his attention to you, “How was the-” You swung the heel swiftly into his stomach, earning a surprised grunt from the boy.
“Don’t mention this date ever again.” You said the threatening words with a glint of anger to your voice, but your face was pressed into a sweet smile.
Jean nodded slowly, “Will you at least tell us what happened?”
You sighed, “Later, I’ll tell you, but I know Connie will bully me for it.”
Jean nodded some more, “Later?”
“The least you can do is let me stay the night.” You raised your eyebrows at the boy. “Since you made me go on the worst date of my life with a homophobic jerk.”
“Okay,” Jean said with a grin, “But only because you’re practically begging for me.”
You swung the heel into his stomach a second time, but he grabbed it before it could give any damage. You both looked intently at each other, your eyes glaring annoyedly and his eyes admiring the sight in front of him. This was exactly what you expected from him, this is exactly how he acts after these dates. He’s always the one to pick up and put back the broken pieces once the doll breaks, even if he’s the reason the doll fell in the first place.
Once you walked into the apartment, you left your shoes and purse by the door, right beside Jean’s shoes. You waved a quick hello to Connie and Sasha - who were too distracted shooting zombies to see you - as you walked past them in the living room and found your way straight to Jean’s room. You knew the apartment like the back of your hand, you had been here a million times.
You walked across the small room to your drawer that Jean keeps all of your clothes in for when you stay. You pulled it open and picked out a pair of cheetah print pajama shorts and an old t-shirt from an now irrelevant ex boyfriend. You threw the clothes on his bed, getting ready to change just when the door suddenly opened.
You turned to the door with tired eyes and furrowed eyebrows as Jean joined you in the room. He leaned against the now closed door, physically keeping the others from joining as well. He crossed his arms against his chest, taking in the sight of him - you in your satin black dress you wore on nearly every date.
“So,” Jean said finally, “What happened?”
You sighed, “He crawled through a window.”
Jean’s eyebrows furrowed, “He crawled through a window?”
“Yes, when he went to the bathroom and I called you. He crawled through a window to get away from me.” You looked anywhere around the room but the boy. “What’s wrong with me?”
“Hey,” Jean moved from the door, coming across the room to you, “Nothing’s wrong with you. Something’s wrong with him.” Jean held you at arm’s length, his hands on your shoulders. “Not only did he leave you, but he has a crush on Eren of all people. I’ve seen birds at the park who are more attractive than he is.”
You grinned sadly, “I bet people don’t crawl through windows to get away from Eren on dates.”
Jean ran his hand down the side of your head, “Eren doesn’t give them the chance, I don’t think he’s ever been on a date.”
“But, people would go on one with him.” You finally looked up at the boy in front of you, trying to keep the tears from spilling the second time today. “He’s not undateable. I’m undateable. I’ve scared guys away every Saturday night for the last two months.”
“You’re not undateable,” Jean said sternly, “You just haven’t found the right one. And, you won’t find the right one if you don’t keep going on these dates. Every horrible date means you’re one more Saturday closer to your soulmate.”
“And, what if I don’t have a soulmate? What if I’m damned to die alone?”
“Then, I’ll die with you.” Jean brought you in for a tight hug, your face snuggling into his firm chest. Jean whispered his words, mostly to himself, “I’d give up 200 soulmates if it only meant I could die with you.”
You closed your eyes against the soft fabric of Jean’s shirt. It was hard to trust his words when there seemed to be so many contradicting factors. Maybe tonight was a total bust, but next Saturday was a new day. You could try again next Saturday, and the Saturday after that, and the Saturday after that. And, every Saturday for the rest of your life until you found your soulmate, even if that seemed like a pointless mission.
You’d do it for both you and Jean, it was the least you could do.
First Sunday
You woke up in Jean’s bed with his body close to yours. It was a standard cuddling position for your friendship: face-to-face, his arms wrapped around your side, your arms cradled against your chest, and your legs intertwined. Despite the normalcy associated with the position, you still woke up with a dorky smile and butterflies floating around your stomach when you saw him sleeping in front of you.
Today was no exception.
You grinned ear to ear as you watched the peaceful rise and fall of Jean’s tanned chest under the thin fabric of his white t-shirt. You watched as his lips parted against the pressure of the pillow under his cheek, a small stream of spit rolling from the corner of his mouth and onto the fabric of the pillowcase below. Every Saturday night ended with tears and regrets, but every Sunday morning began with sweet dreams and a special sleepy boy.
You turned away from Jean, reaching for your phone on the nightstand. The only way to successfully grab the phone was to also pull yourself from Jean’s grasp and from between his legs. It was a horrible price to be paid, but it had to be paid nonetheless.
You checked your lock screen, reading over playful messages from your roommate asking about how good Floch was in bed - assuming you had stayed at his house since you hadn’t come home. And, a few confused messages from Eren asking you who Floch was, why he was texting him, and how he was connected to you.
You locked the phone and turned back to Jean. You were expecting the boy to still be napping peacefully, but he instead stared sleepily at you. Your face had been in a grimace from the mentions of your date last night, but Jean’s honey brown eyes quickly dissipated any negative feelings.
“Good morning,” You whispered, “Did you sleep well?”
“Good morning,” Jean said as he shifted his head and wiped the spit from the corner of his mouth. He was hoping you hadn’t noticed the wetness and that you weren’t questioning the wiping motion he made at his cheek. “And I-”
You smiled, “From the drool spot on the pillowcase, I’ll have to assume you slept well.”
Jean’s cheeks turned rosy, you could see the physical embarrassment on his face. He wasn’t the type to accept humiliation so easily, he was always one to fight back. Just his humiliation isn’t enough, if he’s going down, he’s taking as many people he can take with him. So, you weren’t sure why you were surprised when he swiftly sat up, grabbed the pillow, and attempted to shove the wet spot into your face.
You yelped, rolled, and sprung from the bed only a second before the pillow could land on your cheek, right where it was heading. You were up on your feet quicker than you ever thought you could be, your body still feeling the aftereffects of sleep. You looked down at the boy in front of you, the pillow still tightly gripped in his hands and a mischievous smile smacked across his face.
“You little bastard,” You said with a shocked smile.
Jean smiled back, “I’m actually quite big.” The words were meant as a joke about his body’s size, but both of your dirty minds immediately jumped to the size of something else on his body. “In more ways than one.”
You shouted at the boy between the giggles escaping from your throat, “Jean! Seriously!”
Jean shrugged, laughing along at his own joke, “I’m sorry, I had to!”
“You didn’t have to do shit!” You made your way to the bedroom door. “I’m going home!”
“One bad joke and now you’re leaving.” Jean leaped from the bed, following you to the door. “At least let me make you breakfast first.”
You turned to him with an intrigued glint in your eyes, “Will you make me waffles?”
“Sure,” Jean said as he playfully shoved your shoulder, “I’ll make you waffles.”
“With chocolate chips?” He walked in front of you, leaving the room with you following behind him like a child.
“Yes, I can add chocolate chips.” Jean tried to hide the grin spreading across his cheeks. “Do you want bacon and sausage as well?”
“Shut up,” You said from behind his back, “You know that I don’t.”
His voice sounded sweet, “Yeah, I do know.”
You stood against the counter, only a foot away from where he stirred the waffle mix. You watched as he eyed the waffle box intently, then poured the four other ingredients into the bowl after the dry mix. He looked a bit confused as he moved the spoon around the bowl, as if he was deathly afraid of missing something but not wanting to give the impression that he’d be stupid enough to miss something.
You knew where the coffee was kept and how to work his coffee machine and while you waited for it to brew, you watched Jean with a weak smile across your face. He could feel your eyes on him. Jean tried to ignore the weight of your eyes, not wanting his cheeks to go red though his chest was already inflating from the action.
Jean spared a glance in your direction, only a few seconds before the coffee finished brewing with a loud splash. For those few seconds when both of your eyes were held on each other, time seemed to slow. You could read the admirational glint in his brown eyes and he could read the appreciative glint in your eyes. Before the moment could go much further, you turned away and grabbed the coffee pot and mugs.
You not only knew which coffee beans Jean preferred, but you also knew how he liked his coffee. You poured a little bit of his roommate’s creamer into his mug, and then the tiniest bit of sugar as well. After the coffee was finished, you handed him the mug with a quick smile.
Waffles eventually found themselves on plates and forks eventually found themselves in between fingers. You both ate breakfast against the kitchen counter, Jean leaning down farther than you had to. You moved your fork against the softness of the slightly underdone waffles - he didn’t know just how much batter was supposed to go into the waffle maker at once.
Jean suddenly spoke up by your side, “Are you free this Saturday?”
You turned to the boy, “I normally am. Who’s next?”
“I have a friend on the football team.” Jean ignored your initial grimace to the statement. “He’s nice and desperate, the way you like ‘em.”
You turned back to your waffle with a small pout, “Maybe I should give guys a break for a little.” Jean raised an eyebrow at you. “I’ll just become a nun and write off men altogether.”
“You can’t do that!”
Your head snapped back to Jean, I can’t?”
“No,” Jean said, “You can’t.”
“And, why can’t I?”
“You just can’t.”
A thick silence had settled in the room, the only sound being the scraping of forks against the porcelain plates. You wondered why Jean was against you becoming a nun. You assumed it was because he was the type to fight persistently, so possibly the idea of giving up on something indefinitely was foreign and upsetting to him. You knew he indirectly reflected onto other people, yourself included.
After a few more moments of silence, Jean started walking away. You watched him as he moved across the living room, heading straight towards his bedroom. Right before the boy could get to the door, he turned to you with a single raised eyebrow and a cocky grin.
“Hey,” Jean said from across the room, “Do you wanna go to the bathroom before I do?”
You looked around the kitchen with a confused look on your face, as if the apartment could give you any clue as to what he was implying with his words. You didn’t have to use the bathroom, nor did you ever insinuate within the last twenty minutes that you did.
You tilted your head curiously, “Why would I need to go to the bathroom before you?”
Jean smiled at the idea of his next words, already proud of himself, “Just to make sure I can’t crawl out through the window.”
Jean laughed as you pretended to throw your fork across the spacious apartment. He was proud of his joke, and you had to admit that you weren’t as upset as you should have been. Last night, the idea of your date crawling through a window in order to get away from you was the worst thing that had ever happened. But with Jean, it was just a funny memory.
Jean came back to the kitchen after a few moments, still giggling lightly about his joke he made nearly two whole minutes ago. You ignored his cockiness by trying to fight the smile forming on your face.
Jean leaned towards you, wrapping a muscled arm around your shoulders. Being pressed against his body in this way made you now realize how he smelled. He smelled of a rich cologne of rose and mahogany. You hadn’t noticed the cologne before he left for the bathroom, but it could have very well slipped past you.
Jean spoke from above you, “I’m glad you aren’t still upset about last night.”
“I never said that.” You looked up at the boy, his arm still around you. “But, I am starting to see the humor in the situation.”
“Good,” Jean said with a smile, “It’s not nearly as bad as that guy who asked if his mom could join you for the date.”
You cringed at the thought, “And, I said yes.”
“And, the one who asked for a vial of your blood.”
You shrugged at the taller boy, “At least he asked, there was the one guy who stole my hair scrunchie without asking first. I think he used it so he could clone me.”
“Yeah.” Jean quickly remembered another awful date. “And, the one who gave you a yarn doll of yourself as a first date gift.”
You smiled widely, “I’m nearly a hundred percent sure that it was actually a Voodoo doll. I’m glad I accepted it before I told him no to a second date.”
Jean grinned down at you, only an inch or two from your face. It was hard not to smile when looking at the boy. He was beautiful and reminded you of an ancient sun god. From his tanned skin, to his lively brown eyes, and his deeply inviting smile. It was hard to look at Jean and not feel your heart skip a beat, especially when you were so close to him.
“They’re all funny stories now,” Jean said, “So, that’s good.”
You moved deeper into his arm, “Funny stories that I don’t need.”
“But, funny stories nonetheless.”
“Yeah,” You mumbled sarcastically, “Thanks to you.”
“Hey!” Jean was pulling you into a quick bear hug as you laughed against his chest. “I try to find the University’s best guys for you! They are truly the school’s finest.”
“Then, why do they all suck?”
He didn’t answer your question because he wasn’t sure he knew why. He didn’t know why he threw these horrible guys onto you, under the impression of them being good matches. But, in his defense, it was hard to find somebody of your quality.
You were a goddess amongst mortals and these men could never be enough for you. And, if these men were mortals compared to you, then Jean felt he wasn’t even a mortal. He was the dirt hiding in the crevices of somebody’s shoe, he was the dust somebody breathed in before they yawned. Jean felt he could never equal up to you, but maybe these other guys could get close. And, maybe - just maybe - if he helps you get a boyfriend, then he wouldn’t think about you being a goddess so much.

(Y/N) Meets Zeke Yeager at a Radiohead Concert In the Year 2012 (Yes, It's The King Of Limbs Hour For Sure)
Tumblr media
(You-16 Zeke-17 Porco-16 Pieck-17 Colt-16 Yelena- 17)
I don't fucking know why I think of these things, but here I go, this is for all of you Superior-Music-Taste-Thom-Yorke-er- Radiohead-virgins out there B)
Tumblr media
The year is 2012, (Y/N) is 16, and the setting is a Radiohead concert almost one year post-King-Of-Limbs-album-drop.
After working for a few months at your first part time job, you were able to save enough cash to buy concert tickets for you and a friend.
The location of the venue is about 2 hours from your hometown, and it's quite the road trip.
Either using your/your friend's car, or public transportation, to make the trip.
Zeke is 17, he's also at this concert with a group of his friends: Colt, Porco, Pieck, Yelena.
You're jamming out to all the hits, swaying your body to the sound of the music just right, and letting yourself go in a way you've only ever done alone in your bedroom.
King Of Limbs wasn't Radiohead's most well received album, but you love almost anything Thom, that droopy eyed bastard, and the other members put out.
Your friend that you came to the concert with is currently on a bathroom break, leaving you to your own devices in the crowded room.
"Separator" plays loudly throughout the concert hall; the drum beat feels like it has made it's way under your skin, and the melodic sound of Thom's voice feels as if it's an instrument in its own right.
Zeke is currently jogging back inside, he had left only for a moment during a run through of "Morning Mr. Magpie" for a smoke break.
(it's not particularly his favorite on the album)
"Separator" is one of Zeke's favorites comparatively, and he might hit himself after if he ends up missing the live rendition.
He sees a familiar slicked back head of blonde hair while peering over the heads of the crowd, and Zeke's relieved to see Porco turn around and wave him over.
Zeke makes a b-line for his friend, trying his best to shove through the crowd as politely, yet firmly, as he can.
Whilst making his way over, Zeke bumps into someone who's almost completely oblivious to his presence, until said person trips over themselves and falls to their feet.
You luckily brace yourself, your palms and wrists making contact with the dirty ground as to protect your face.
Normally, Zeke would most likely brush this off and claim the situation to not be his problem, and most likely continue on his path to his friends.
A change of heart? Guilt for being a catalyst in knocking you over? (as he suspects it would've happened eventually) Or maybe it's because he notices the way your ass looks in your blue jeans.
Zeke can tell a good ass when he sees one, and everybody has an ass to be appreciated after all, no consideration for gender identity or assigned anatomy needed.
Zeke pauses and decides 'ah, what the hell'.
Zeke crouches down and holds his hand out to you, flashing a boyish grin that suits his younger looking face well, as he begins to offer you an apology.
"My mistake for knocking you on your ass, I was trying to get to my friends... Need a hand?"
Zeke half yells this apology, and in the end it's still very muffled sounding due to the loud music.
You are wary of the boy in front of you, being very well versed in all the basic "stranger-danger" rules, the ones your care-taker/parental-figure drilled into you before you left.
But the slight tug of the left side of his mouth, the dimple in his cheek, his shaggy yet soft looking blonde hair, his stupid but admittedly cool glasses that hang low on the bridge of his nose...
He's cute, and you're too aware of the fact to deny his hand that he's offered to you.
You say a "Thanks", only letting yourself look him in the eye for hardly a second, as he accepts your hand into his roughly textured one.
You feel a flush begin on your chest and rise up to your face, ashamed of yourself for practically drooling at the feeling of just a grasp of a hand around your own.
Zeke assists you in rising to your feet, and he can almost feel your eyes tracing his form, taking him in.
He looks rather typical, a dark t-shirt with a faded "Kid A bear" logo printed on it, under a wrinkled rusty-toned flannel with rolled up sleeves, dark denim loosely encompasses his lanky legs that end with damaged and worn low-top skate shoes.
You only realize your hand is still in his own, when you catch the cheeky look in his eye, after scanning back to to his face.
You retract your hand from his, with suspiciously quick retreat, that has him grinning a little wider.
"Name's Zeke, do you have one?"
You can smell his last cigarette on his breath as he talks, you're both in close proximity due to the people around you.
The performance of "Separator" is almost long forgotten at this point, it's now just the background noise to your first conversation with each other.
You shift your weight back and forth to each foot, settling on leaning to your right side, before looking up to answer him.
"It's (Y/N), and it's okay, I was kinda in my own world for a minute there..." You answer honestly, but almost too bashfully, taking the blame for your tumble.
Zeke shakes his head and answers immediately, "No, I wasn't really paying attention to who I was knocking into, but I guess I was kinda lucky that you happened to be my first victim."
His voice has a slight rasp to it, though he's just 17 he admittedly smokes like a chimney.
His words also have an attractive cadence to them, you can already tell he's a smart ass by the way he's immediately putting the moves on, but you find yourself not really caring all too much.
Zeke starts again, "I also get like that though, in my head I mean, 'specially with "Separator"..."
You nod along and begin to talk to him more about your interest for the track, hardly noticing as the minutes roll by, and with the song changing into "Little by Little".
The both of you exchange words and information throughout the next song, like your ages, preferred albums, what other concerts you've been to.
Zeke completely forgets about his friends in the minutes he's conversing with you, and the same happens with you, until Porco loudly appears with Colt behind Zeke.
"Dude! I waved you over like 10 minutes ago! What the hell Zeke? You're dragging your ass and the other's are-" Porco's sentence cuts off as his eyes drift over to you, understanding the hold up.
Porco turns his head to Zeke and receives a glower from the taller boy. Whilst wearing a shit eating grin, Porco gives Zeke a curt nod and a slap on the shoulder.
"Whatever, just shoot me text in a few man,"
Porco's eyes catch your your for second, as he raises a hand for a quick sayonara,
"Nice meeting ya'."
Zeke pushes up his glasses as he shakes his head in annoyance and heaves a sigh.
As Porco gestures for a confused Colt to follow him back to the rest of the group, you catch eyes with your own friend.
They give you an apologetic glance but then notice Zeke near you, they hold up their hand and toggle back and forth between a thumbs up and thumbs down, silently asking if Zeke's presence was a bother.
You give a thumbs up, which they respond with a double thumbs up, as they make their way over to a group of people and easily start to blend in.
You turn back towards Zeke and offer a smile, finally free of interruptions, as the song ends and fades into "Lotus Flower". Commotion erupts throughout the crowd, as the majority cheer for one of the most favored songs.
Zeke offers you a smile as well, and shuffles a step or two closer, before beginning to speak again.
Tumblr media
Ending it there! If I make a follow up then that'll be over here when the time comes: Part Two

A/N: I tried something a little different with this one, let me know what you think.  Also a big thank you to @peachy-jj for her help with me figuring out how I wanted to write this. She’s amazing <3. TW: Abuse, Violence, depictions of Injuries. This one is a little bit heavy.
Request by @peachy-jj: “I've been dying for someone to write something based on the song July by Noah Cyrus, Idk if that helps you at all lol”
Description: Y/N gets a phone call in the middle of the night for John B. He’s worried about JJ and how he’s reacting to a run-in with his father. Y/N arrives but isn’t prepared for what she sees. Based on the song July by Noah Cyrus.
Tumblr media
The incessant buzz of my phone underneath my pillow woke me from my sleep. I looked at the clock sitting on the table beside my bed. The red-lined letters bright enough to make me squint. 1:15. Only an hour since I went to sleep. I looked at my phone, squinting again at just how bright the screen was. The caller ID read “John B.” I quickly sat up sliding the bar to answer the call.
“Hello,” I said. My voice coming out strained from just waking up. I sat resting my arm on my knees, running a hand through my knotted hair.
“Oh my god. Y/N, thank god you answered.” He was breathing heavily and I heard crashing in the background, loud rock music playing. “JJ just got back from his house.’
“Oh” was all I said getting out of bed, wedging the phone between my shoulder and my ear as I began to get on my pants and a pair of shoes while John B continued to talk.
“He’s not good. He won’t let me help him out, it looks like he’s in pain, but he’s smoking, and he keeps punching things. He’s playing this music at an ungodly volume. I don’t know how to help. I know you can calm him down. I don’t know, I just thought it might help if you were here.”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can JB. I just finished getting dressed.”
“Okay. Thank you Y/N” He said, I could hear a breath of relief leave his mouth before the phone line went dead.
The walk to the chateau was me half running and half speed walking, trying to get there as soon as I could. One of the downsides of being a pogue, having to walk everywhere. It was not ideal in a situation like this, especially this early in the morning. The breeze helped to calm down my heated skin. I was trying to keep my cool. I hated the way that JJ’s dad treated him. JJ tried his hardest to please him, but Luke would never be pleased with his son. That what ate at me the most, because we all could see it, no matter how hard JJ tried, it wasn’t what his dad wanted. I tried to brace myself for what I would see when I enter the Chateau. I normally saw him the day after, he would stay at the chateau that night, and we would all find out in the morning. On the rare occasion that he knew my parents were gone he would come over and let me clean him up. I knew what the music meant though. JJ was trying to drown out the thoughts that he was having, the thoughts that his dad put into his head, he was trying to drown them in substance and noise. He was trying to distract himself. That was what worried me the most.
I knocked on the door, just as a courtesy, I knew they couldn’t hear me. I heard rock music playing from the street. I saw John B in the hallway head against the wall in the hallway. I tapped him on the shoulder, startling him. He wrapped his arms around me. “I am so glad that your here. I don’t know how to calm him down this time.” He nodded behind him. “He’s in the living room. I’ll be out on the porch if you need me.”
I nodded and moved past him. Once JJ entered my line of the vision my stomach dropped. I felt sick instantly. He sat against the wall, nodding his head to the beat, his legs up so he could rest his arms on his knees. His pen in one hand the other making its way through his hair. His left eye was swollen, I saw the deep red starting to turn purple and the cut above his eyebrow smeared with blood and still bright red. Then his jaw, also a deepening shade of red, going all the way to his ear. Then his lips, I couldn’t see if it was split, but the blood from his nose dried on them. It didn’t matter how many times I saw JJ with cuts or bruises on his body, every time it was like the first time.  It made me sick with anger that someone could hurt him. It hurt me that someone could hurt the boy that I love so much. I felt the tears in my eyes but tried my best to blink them back before walking towards him.
I kneeled down in front of him, taking his free hand in mine. His eyes snapped up to me and he broke. He moved forward knocking me back as he clung onto me. The unbearable music drowned out as I rubbed up and down the sweaty fabric on JJ’s back. I felt each and every sob that racked through his body as if it were my own, somewhere along the way they become mine too. I felt the tears finally fall as I continued to hold him. He gripped the large sleeping t-shirt I wore into his fists. He finally stopped sobbing and seemed to calm down, but his breathing was still uneven. I took his hand, that still gripped the t-shirt, and carefully flattened it out. I took notice of the red stains on each of his knuckles. I placed it on my chest and tried breathing in and out heavily so that he could feel it.
“Hey? You feel that?” I bent my head so that I could finally catch his eyes. “My breathing? Can you breathe with me, baby? Don’t hold back your breath baby. Count to ten with me and breathe alright? ” I still caught his eyes with mine. Their normal bright blue was being overshadowed by the swelling and how bloodshot they were from crying. He laid his head in my chest. I rested my hand on his back, feeling his breaths start to even out. Only then did I realize the loud music still playing, drowning out everything around us.
I lifted JJ’s chin to look at him again. The blood still covered his face. “Can I clean you up? Please?”
JJ nodded and stood up. I stood up after him, but turned to the stereo and pausing the music before it gave either of us a headache. I didn’t want JJ to hurt anymore than he already was. I slid my hand, pulling him behind me, guiding him to the bathroom. JJ knew to sit on the counter as I reached behind the toilet and on the top shelf of the medicine cabinet for supplies. JJ sat with his head hanging low, not speaking still. I wet the cloth and laid it down beside him on the counter and moved to stand between his legs. I grabbed the hem on his shirt. Another one of JJ’s t-shirts ripped and stained with blood. It shouldn’t have to be like this. He raised his hands over his head as I removed it. I threw it on the pile he and John B had in the corner of the room. I saw a few bruises scattered across his torso. I ran my fingers across them, wishing I could soak up all of JJ’s pain.
“I tried to do what he wanted” JJ broke the silence, almost starting. “I tried Y/N. I tried to listen. Then he started to say something, he started to talk about mom again. He was throwing back beer after beer.”
I just nodded my head, letting him talk. I knew that I did not have the right words to tell him what to think. He had to process what happened on his own, but I would always be there to listen. JJ knew that. I started with the wet cloth, cleaning up the blood that had dripped down to his neck. He flinched at the cold cloth before continuing.
“Every day he tells me I am not the son he wants. He tells me I am not enough. I always go back though. I am so scared of change Y/N. I lost my mom and like he’s my dad. I know he’s terrible, but I guess I am afraid of change.” I felt one of his tears land on my arm. I looked up at him to see more following. I put my hand on his cheek using my thumb to wipe away his tears. “He reminds me every day that I’m not good enough, but I still stay.”
Silence falls over us once more. I wanted to say something, but I knew JJ. He was too in his head right now to listen to me. He was talking to me, but it wasn’t for me, it was for him. I started to work on the blood that was on his face. His tears left streaks in the dry blood, making my heart shatter all over again. I feel my eyes start to fill with tears once more and try to keep my breathing steady for JJ. I knew that he would notice if I was getting upset again. I moved to grab the other cloth and some disinfectants. “J, this might sting a little,” I warned him as I poured the liquid over the cloth. He already knew it would sting like I kept thinking, he’s been here before, and as much as I hated to think it, we would probably be here again.
JJ nodded. He winced when I wiped the cloth across the split above his eyebrow. “I’m just so sick of feeling stuck in this cycle.” He said as if he was reading my mind. “Feels like a lifetime, just tryna get by, while I’m dying inside, I've done a lot of things wrong, letting him back in, time after time being one.”  He let out a shaky breath as I finished wiping up the cut just above his lip.
I threw the clothes in the pile with JJ’s shirt. I rested my hands on either of JJ’s thighs. I rubbed slightly over the rough fabric of his cargo shorts before looking up at me. I felt his hands push them off. “Y/N, you deserve someone who shows you love, who knows what love is to give you. You deserve someone who loves you, better than I do, darling” My head snapped up and I cupped his face, but he turned to the side, staring down at the floor. “Tell me to leave and I’ll pack my bags Y/N. I’ll let you flourish because I feel like I am holding you back”
I turn his head back to face me and I see the tears in his eyes. I can feel the way my eyebrows are scrunched together in a frown. I know that the intense fight with his father was not completely physical. His dad diminished everything about JJ when they fought.
“JJ believe me when I tell you that you are the best thing that has happened in my life. You are my rock. I know that I can go to you with anything and you will help.” I felt the warm tears start to roll down my face. “You balance me out in all the best ways. You help me to stop overthinking and take stuff lightly, you help to keep me grounded, and not so crazy. We’re both crazy, but we work, and I would not trade that for the world.” I wiped off the newly formed tears as they fell down his cheeks. “You are the love that I deserve plus so much more.”
My breath was shaky and JJ pulled me into his chest and we wrapped our arms around each other. To anyone else, it wouldn’t have been romantic or meaningful. A hug in a messy boys bathroom in the middle of the night, but to JJ and I, it was a pivotal moment that we were able to show our love to one another. I pulled back, rubbing my thumb over the cut the was just below his lips. I placed a soft kiss on his eyebrow, then the cut on his chin. I felt him let out a breath as I finally placed a soft and gentle kiss to his lips.
“JJ I will show you every day that you are enough, I will remind you how you are good enough. I’ll always stay by your side” I whispered, our foreheads leaning against one another.
“Always” He whispered back.

I had an idea after reading someone fan fiction. I am dyslexic so its not the best. I enjoyed writing it. Might write more I have a few ideas. Depends what happens.
Karl Urban x Reader
Karl and reader work on the set of the boys together. The both have something they want to acting on.
Smut 18+
You stand there motionless listening to the sound of your breathing. Living in the moment. Your eyes closed as you tune into the sounds of nature. You hear a door open. The muffled sound of talking in the distance. You were surprised with how quiet the party had gotten since you left it.
“You meditating?” A grave voice asks you with a smile behind it. Your eyes still closed you smile to yourself knowing who the voice belongs to. You open your eyes gradually as they adjust to dusk lighting.
“No. Just enjoying the moment.” You exhale turning to see Karl. He gives you a soft smile as he takes a sip from his glass. You smile back. Leaning on the porch fence you look back over the still water trees in the background. The warm sunset colours blend with the invading black.
“I came out to escape the noise and watch the sunrise. The colours remedy me of home.” You look up at Karl. Who is now resting against the fence facing you. You see his chest rise then fall as he takes a deep breath. Both of you comfortable in each other's silence. You look down at his left hand which is resting on the top of the fence holding a beer. You raise an eyebrow. Wondering why he has two drinks.
“You an alcoholic now?” You ask him jokingly. At first, he looks confused. Giving you a questionable look. Before Realising the bottle of beer in his hand.
“Oh yeah, I brought it for you.” He smiles handing you the bottle. As you accept it he holds up his glass.
“Sláinte,” You say as the glasses clink together. Both nodding and taking a sip. Your eye still locked within others. A flock of birds passing above a squeaking distrust the staring. Admiring nature Karl slowly lowers his head admiring you as you watch the birds fly above you. He smiles at you. You feel him watching you. Giving him a stern stare.
“Your hair looks amazing in this light.” He states softly.
“Thank you.” You smile as look away hiding the fact you are blushing. You feel hot and flustered. Unable to stop smiling. Counting to 3 you take a breath and clear your throat. Looking up you smile at him. A bit of hair is covering your eye. Before you could flick it away. Karl reaches up to your face. All you could think was how big his hand was. He tucked the strand of hair behind your ear. His thumb grazed your cheek. As you both shared. You could feel your heart pounding. You took a breath as he stepped closer looking down at you before he crashed his lips against yours. All of a sudden you had butterflies as you felt his other hand grasp you’re hip. It felt like fireworks going off all over your body as his hands traveled up your back into your hair. Your heart was racing all you wanted was for it not to stop. Karl then pulls away from you. Both of you staring at each other trying to get your breath back. All of a sudden you see him differently than you did before. All the curves and edges on his face. His eyes-how enchanting they were to you. As your eyes survey his face his hands drop from you.
“What?” He asks his eyebrow arched as he watches your eyes admire your face. You open your mouth to talk but nothing seems to come out.
“I don’t know…you…” You tilt your head.
“You look different…” You say confused. Karl rests against the fence.
“How?” He asks confused.
“I don’t know.” You as you tilt your head trying to figure it out. Karl watches as you observe him like a newly discovered animal discovered in the wild.
“But I like it.” You flirt. The side of his lips curl. You smile back. Stepping closer to him. Placing your hand on his waist. He looks down at your hand following it as it trails up his shirt. Your hand in his beard as you both stare into each other's eyes. Your heart pounding again as you lean in to kiss him. This time there's more power behind the kiss. His hands in your hair before trailing down to the lower of your back. A moan escapes your mouth as he grabs you lifting you turning around, sitting you on the fence. Your hand on his chest. As one of his hands holds onto you. You fumble with his buttons as your tongues start to entwine with each other. He stops you after you unbutton the third button.
“Wait.” He shakes his head slightly, his voice sounds gravely.
“People are going to start wondering where we are.” You watch as you see his breath. Appearing and disappearing and appearing in the last of the light.
“Yeah, you are probably right.” You agree as Karl holds his hand out helping you down from the fence. There was an awkward silence for a few seconds before you walked to the door. Karl opened it motioning his head for you to go first. The immediate warmth of the log fire in the room hits you. Feeling Karl right behind you. You take a few steps forward before you sound a cheer from Tony,
“Where you bloody been?” he says in his New sealed accent making a joke. Some of his fellow cast and crewmates left at his joke. His voice snapping you back into reality. Karen sitting infant asks if you are ok. You nod in agreement smiling. Almost bewildered by what happened outside.
“We were watching the sunset. Beautiful it was.” Karl says squeezing past you.
“Sunset. It bloody dark outside looks like it has been for a while.” He states having a quick look out the window.
“Yeah cause we’re in the middle of nowhere. Very little light pollution it looks darker than what it is.” Karl explains to Tony as he grabs to beers. Tony pauses almost like he’s thinking about what Karl said and how true it was.
“Beer Y/N?” Karl asks pointing a bottle to you.
“Yeah. Keep it for me I am just going to the toilet real quick.” You say as Karl is twisting the lids of the bottles nodding. You shit the bathroom door behind you. Resting behind the door you take a big sign noticing yourself in the mirror. Apart from red cheeks, you don’t look like anything has happened. You run the cold tap splashing it against your skin hoping it will calm you down. You give yourself a mini pet talk before you join everyone else. Karl asks if you are ok as he hands you a beer. You agree and join in the conversation with a group of people across the room. As the night goes on Karl and you keep catching each other's eyes. You both want the same thing but you need to restrain yourself’s and play t cool. If you were close to each other you would exchange subtle touches.
Eventfully the party starts to die down and people start leaving or go to their rooms. You drag your feet to your room. “Night,” Karl says behind you.
“Night night.” You say smiling closing the door behind you. You bite your tongue. Thinking it's not what you expected from the party but you didn’t regret it one bit. You can hear Karl and someone having a conversation in the hall. You can’t make anything out but you hear Karls’s accent/They both laugh and you hear the footsteps fade down the hallway. You open the door seeing Karl leaning against the door frame to his room. He looks to both sides before nodding into his room. He has a devilish look about him as you bite your lip. Before you giggle shutting your door and run into his room. You are standing in the center of his room as he shuts the door and spins to face you. You both smiling you walk loser to each other. Before your lips crash together Karl lifting you as you wrap your legs around his waist. His bag hand on your bum you feel tiny whilst being held by him. He walks holding you one of his hands traveling up your body. It stops at your head as he pushes you against the wall, using his hand as a barrier for your head. You let out a sigh pulling away from him admiring his face before you start kissing him again. You start unbuttoning the buttons of his shirt this time he didn’t stop you when you got to the third. You smile as you kiss he turns placing you on the bed. He pulls his shirt off and throws it on the floor. He crawls his strong arms over you. You admire them as you feel them. He’s about to lean in to kiss him but you speak first.
“It's not fair. Your bed’s comfier than mine.” He raises an eyebrow you look around the room Karl still over you.
“Your room is bigger than mine as well.” You jokingly state sitting up resting on your elbows. Karl sits up looking at you as he kneels on the edge of the bed. You smile to yourself smiling at Karl you move suddenly spinning him around pushing him onto the bed. You straddle his waist. Kissing down his chest. As you stand up you unbutton and unzip your black leather jeans As you start taking them off you lose balance. Karl tries to grab you but you manage to find your balance.
“Sexy. I know.” You laugh Karl smiles. Scooting himself to the side of the bed his feet resting on the floor. Once you get your leather jeans off. Karl grabs your hand pulling you close you straddle his waist as he looks up at you.
“Next time I won’t wear the leather jeans.” You laugh as he kisses. His hands on your bum before going under your shirt. You lift your arms as he takes it off. He looks up and down at your body before you he pops your bra off. You roll your head back and laugh out loud as he caught you by surprise. You pull his head into your breasts as you try to muffle your laughter. He grabs one with his hand the other in his mouth as swirls his tongue around your nipple. You lift your head. Before switches his hand and mouth around to the other. You look down at him biting your lip. He catches your eyes, Can’t leave one out. You push him down as your place you’re on either side of him you kiss his neck as he feels your body. He gives your bum a wee smack.
“You can do that again if you want. But harder?” You whisper in his ear.
“Ooohhh.” He rolls his head. Before smacking it a little harder. You start kissing down his chest. Unbuttoning his trousers pulling them down and off around his feet.
“Sexy. I’ll need to take some tips.” You joke. He laughs watching you as he rests on his elbows. You take off his boxers his feet shuffle beside you as he watches waiting in anticipation. You grab the very hard member in your mouth. Not breaking eye contact with him as you do. He rolls his head back and lets out a groan. You suck up and down trying to keep as much eye contact with him as you can. He soon sits up, pulling your face in for a kiss. As he does he rests you on the bed. His hands on each side of your face he watches you for a moment before he leans down to kiss your neck. You wrap one of your legs around his hip. Pulling him closer. He trails kisses down your neck. You stretch your neck giving him more access. He sits up pulling your panties off. As he comes back down to meet your lips.
“Do I still look different?” He asks. You hide your face embarrassed before.
“You look sexy.” You stare into his green eyes biting your lips.
“Oh. I could give you a few words of how you look but I’m just going to show you instead.”
His big hand trails your side before slipping it between your legs. You shiver under his touch.
“Looks like I don’t need to do much.” He grins deviously at you.
“It didn’t take you long to get me like that.” You say. You both nod.
Oh good. Cause I had to hide that since we kissed.”
“Well done for hiding it well. I have been pretty much the same.” You giggle flirtatiously. He hums before one big thrust inside of you. You can’t help but groan out loud. Your back arching his hand holding your back. He starts thrusting slowly as he feels you molding around him. Each moan you making him smile more. Your hips rolling together. You lift your leg against his waist.
“Fuck.” He exclaims burying his head in your neck. You stretch your neck out as how good it feels, The thrust gets faster and deeper.
“Fuck.” You bleat out.
All you can hear is groaning from Karl. Then all of a sudden you grip your nails into his back. Your body sizes and this overwhelming feeling comes over you.
“Kkkkaaaarrl.” Your breath. He doesn’t stop. However, you know you can’t handle him continuing it for much longer. He smiles. Against your skin. as you try and deal with the feels.
“Fuuucck.” He groans in your ear before collapsing beside you.
You both lye they're in your looking up at the ceiling trying to get your breath back. You both turn your heads looking at each other.
“Wow.” You whisper. You both burst laughing he stretches his arm out. Inviting you to lie on his chest. You move closer to him. Resting on his chest you can hear his heart is still slowing down.
“Yeah, I know.” He says softly. Listening to his heartbeat you start drifting into asleep.

A/N: I mentioned this idea below a while back and I think @mashmaiden said I should turn it into a fic. So of course I did.
And now I want to write about Deeks going home and not being able to sleep, even though he’s completely exhausted because Kensi’s not there. But when she asks how he slept, he pretends that it was great to be back in their bed, and makes a point to complain about the hard hospital couch.
***
Nothing’s Right Without You Here
“You should go home,” Kensi told him softly. They’d moved the couch even closer to her bed so she barely had to reach to touch him. She ran her fingers through his hair again, keeping up the constant rhythm she’d started about 20 minutes ago.
“But I’m so cozy here on this gorgeous pleather couch and scratchy blanket,” he teased sleepily. Kensi shook her head, but couldn’t hold back a little smile.
“You’re back is going to be so sore tomorrow and I know you don’t sleep well with all the bed checks and hospital noises.” It was a good argument, one she’d used before in the past couple week to get him to leave for a few hours.
“I’m not sleepy.” In direct contrast to his words, he yawned loudly and Kensi snorted. “I swear.”
“Baby, go before I call in reinforcements,” Kensi warned. “And you know Sam won’t be nearly as gentle as I am.” As much as he wanted to spend the night, he knew Kensi would make good on her threat.
“Fine,” he groaned, rolling onto his front briefly. He peeked up at Kensi from one eye. “You promise not to run off with that hot technician from radiology.”
“No matter how much he begs.” She gave him a little shove and he finally rolled onto his feet. Crouching in front of her for a moment, he pressed his lips to her forehead and then lips, lingering for a few seconds. Kensi gripped the back of his neck and he marveled at the fact that she could touch him at all. A few weeks ago she could barely move.
“I’ll see you in the morning.” He reluctantly stood up and grabbed his jacket, keys and phone off a table. “And call me if you need anything. I don’t care if it’s 2 AM and you want emergency ice cream. I’ll be here.”
“Thank you,” she whispered, smiling again like he’d hoped. “Night.”
Deeks sighed, standing in the doorway about an hour later, a bag of takeout in his hand. The house was depressingly quiet and empty.
“Hey boy,” he murmured, tossing the bag on the kitchen table as Monty walked over, his paws making soft thumps on the floors. After a quick bathroom trip and run (very slow jog on Monty’s part), Deeks flipped on the TV, scrolling around for something to watch.
His food was still on the table, but something about slightly cooled chicken and steamed vegetables didn’t sound super appetizing. Besides, he wasn’t that hungry anyway.
An old episode of the Twilight Zone played in the background, a classic he remembered watching with his mom as a little kind, but he barely registered the story.
Sighing, he ran his fingers through Monty’s fur, finding a small amount of comfort in the motion. If he was lucky, he’d pass out for a couple of hours on the couch. It was better than the endless tossing and turning that came with trying to sleep in bed without Kensi by his side.
***
“Hey, how’s my ladybird today?” Deeks sang as he walked into Kensi’s room the next morning, a tray with two coffees and small bag of pastries balanced in one hand.
“Hey, you’re here early,” Kensi said, her face lighting up as she saw him. She held out a hand for him and he bent over, kissing her firmly.
“I wanted to make sure I got to spend a couple hours with you before I have to go in to work.” He didn’t mention that he had left home at 5 because he couldn’t bear spending another minute around the house by himself. He started to pull away, but Kensi cupped his chin, holding him in place.
“Did you sleep ok?” She scrutinized his face, running her thumb beneath one eye. “You look tired.”
“I actually slept great. I forgot what it was like to sleep on a mattress. I swear they put bricks in this couch.”
Kensi shook her head again, but seemed to accept his answer.
“Well, I’m glad you finally got some sleep. You want to help me get dressed for PT?” she asked.
“Of course. Then you can eat breakfast. I got you an veggie omelet bagel and cheese danish.”
Later, Callen and Sam would probably notice his exhaustion too and question his safety in the field. He knew he couldn’t keep this up forever, but for now he didn’t see a better way.

show's over, the same old story now
hi i wrote a fic based on ‘moon in the morning’ by adam melchor. objectively this is very much not a happy fic am very sorry (but also not bc i think it’s good lol)
if you’re not comfy with reading stuff about infidelity this one is not gonna be your jam just fyi
thank you to @reveriesofawriter for giving this a read for me this morning <3
you can read it on ao3 here
He’s never given Alex a key. Jack figures he has to draw the line somewhere so he’s never given Alex the spare key to his place.
Instead, the key stays just beneath the flower pot beside the front door and it stays there rather than under the mat because the first place someone would go looking for a key is below the mat, Jack. So really, the line is more like faded chalk on a sidewalk after a summer rain and Jack can’t be bothered to fix it with something more permanent.
It’s around midnight when Jack hears the lock turning and the front door open and close. He’s been sitting on the floor in front of his coffee table working on a research paper for the last several hours, late night talk shows play from the TV for some background noise. Without lifting his eyes from his laptop screen, he listens to Alex kick off his shoes by the door before wandering into the kitchen. It’s a well rehearsed routine. He doesn’t need to look across the room to know that somewhere on the other side of the wall Alex is plugging his phone into the charger by the coffee maker before checking the fridge for leftovers. (They’re aren’t any in there tonight since Jack finished off the last of the chicken parmesan for his own dinner. There is some watermelon on the top shelf though.)
Given the time and the fact that it’s Friday, Alex must have been picking up someone’s shift at the bar so Jack isn’t surprised when he hears more soft footsteps head in the direction of the bathroom. A few moments later he hears the sound of the spray from the shower. Jack figures that’s another ten or so minutes he’ll have to work on his citations so he gets back to the task at hand.
Almost exactly ten minutes later, Alex wanders into the living room wearing a pair of sweatpants pulled from Jack’s closet but his own flannel. He hasn’t bothered with the buttons and Jack does what he can to ignore that observation. Alex takes a seat on the couch just behind where Jack sits and again, in an all too familiar routine, Jack sighs at the feeling of Alex’s fingers pressing into the tension he holds in his shoulders.
“You’ve gotta stop sitting on the floor when you’re working,” Alex says. “You’re going to graduate with a masters in back pain otherwise.”
“I’m comfiest on the floor.”
“I promise you would be comfier at your desk, Jack.” Alex says with a laugh before he leans forward and presses his lips against Jack’s hair like he always does. Before he sits back up, Jack catches the faded scent of Alex’s cologne on the collar of the flannel and it’s enough motivation to reach forward and quickly hit save before closing his laptop for the night. Jack pushes himself up onto the couch beside him and their brown eyes meet for the first time since Alex let himself in twenty or so minutes earlier. Alex looks tired (he always looks so tired) and Jack can’t help but lift a hand to cradle his cheek, his thumb brushing gently below the dark circles he can see in the glow from the TV.
“I’ll be fine,” Jack finally answers after a few beats of silence pass between them.
“Just trying to take care of you,” Alex mumbles as he drops a hand against Jack’s knee and his thumb traces circles against the bone there. There’s some kind of emotion Jack can’t quite place in his tone. He’d question what to call it but they both know that’s not where this is headed.
“You always do,” he replies instead and moves his hand to the back of Alex’s neck to pull him closer to bring their lips together. Alex catches on quickly enough and sighs against Jack’s lips before climbing into his lap and winding his arms around his shoulders, his fingers tangling into the ends of Jack’s hair.
Jack smiles into the kiss when Alex gasps at the feeling of Jack’s fingertips skating their way up his back below the worn flannel shirt. Jack has perpetually cold hands meanwhile Alex’s skin always feels like he’s on fire. There’s probably something poetic in that but Jack ignores the dreamy thoughts and words in favor of pushing the soft material away from Alex’s shoulders until he briefly removes his hands from Jack’s hair to shake the shirt the rest of the way off. He tosses the shirt behind him before wrapping himself around Jack again. Jack feels goosebumps rise against where his fingers brush against Alex’s chest and he knows it’s something he’ll never get over the thrill of being able to do.
Alex’s lips travel down Jack’s jaw to the tattoo on his neck that Alex has always been fond of. “Let’s go to your room,” Alex mumbles in a lower voice, his lips brushing against Jack’s ear. He all but falls out of Jack’s lap before grabbing his hand to pull him in the direction of the hall. The flannel is left forgotten on the back of the couch and the TV is left on with some random late night show host still telling bad jokes to a studio audience.
As they pass the kitchen, Alex’s greedy lips pressing against whatever skin he can find as he pulls Jack toward the bedroom at the end of the hall, Jack swears he can hear the sound of Alex’s phone buzzing out a rhythm against his kitchen counter.
And unlike Alex’s melancholy tone or the poetry told by the temperature of their skin, Jack doesn’t have to question who’s trying to call Alex after midnight on a Friday night. Jack already knows the answer. But as he takes the final steps into his bedroom and lets Alex kiss him against the closed door, he once again chooses to ignore the truth and the buzzing beside his coffee maker in favor of falling into bed with a boy he knows will be gone by sunrise.
*
A few hours later, the sound of the sink running wakes Jack from his sleep. He’s always hated how lightly he sleeps. He knows he’d be far more well rested just in general if he could stay unconscious through the sound of thunderstorms and his late night companion leaving in the earliest hours of the morning. But he figures for the universe to stay balanced he has to be punished for this somehow and maybe this is the best the universe can do at this kind of hour.
His eyes flutter barely open, just enough that he can make out some of the details of his bedroom from the tiny light provided by the moon shining through the curtain he hadn’t bothered to close before falling asleep a few hours earlier. As he listens to the sounds of Alex brushing his teeth and wandering around Jack’s apartment to find the clothes he arrived in, Jack takes in his open closet and the mussed up other side of his bed. It’s reached the point in the year where Jack only sleeps with a sheet because he can’t rest when he’s too warm. A long time ago Alex told him something about how he’s never been able to sleep without something weighing down over him. Jack had started keeping a quilt in the chair in the corner soon after that. It’s already been folded up again and placed back in its spot.
He hears the familiar jingle of Alex’s keys that he dropped in the bowl by the door on his way in a few hours earlier and exhaustion starts to settle back over Jack. He pulls the sheet up over his chest and turns away from his bedroom door and lets out a long breath before closing his eyes.
He’s just started to tumble back over the edge toward sleep so he can’t be sure it wasn’t the beginning of a dream but Jack swears he hears the soft sound of footsteps on the carpet and feels a pair of lips press against his temple. It’s probably easier for everyone involved to assume it’s only his subconscious playing tricks with him again though, he figures, and then he’s asleep.
*
It’s a couple weeks later on a night that follows the same routine as all the others. But for some reason they’ve both chosen tonight to pull a wild card on each other. Rather than forcing his eyes shut and his breathing to steady out after listening to Alex shuffle around the small apartment before heading out, Jack lets himself stay awake. He sits up against the headboard, the sheets falling to pool around his waist. He feels himself shiver in the cool air. He always keeps his place fairly cool at night but he stopped noticing it when he so often is sharing a bed with a human furnace.
Alex steps back into the doorframe, his arms crossing against his chest as he leans his shoulder into the wood, his dark eyes falling to meet Jack’s. He doesn’t look all that surprised to see Jack awake, his eyebrows only barely lifting in recognition that they’ve gone off script a bit.
“You should get some rest, Jack,” Alex says in a voice that suggests he should take his own advice. “You’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”
“Does he make you happy?” Jack asks, his tone all curiosity. Jack is a student before all else; all he wants to do is understand, really.
“He doesn’t make me unhappy,” Alex answers as though the answer should be that obvious. “I wouldn’t stay with someone that makes me miserable.”
“Then does he know you come here? Does he never question why you come home two hours after closing smelling like another man?” Jack isn’t sure who he’s judging more out of the two of them with the questions. He watches Alex take a moment to sigh and scratch at the back of his neck.
“Jack, we can’t have this conversation right now,” Alex says, his eyes floating around the room from his spot at the door in an attempt to avoid Jack’s gaze. “I need to get home. It’s late.”
He shoves his hands in his pockets and turns then to leave. Jack holds his breath until he hears the front door open and close and the lock slide into place. He takes a deep breath then and lets his body fall back against the mattress. Jack closes his eyes and pushes aside the ache in his chest at the silent reminder that despite how often Alex makes his way into Jack’s apartment and heart at the end of the day, home will always be within a different collection of four walls and with a different boy.
*
It’s a creak in the mattress that wakes Jack up this time. For a moment he’s confused at the warm body still pressed against his back. He’s worried his mind is starting to play even more cruel tricks on him in his dreams but the fingertips pressed against his middle tell him their current position is a reality. He lets his fingers fall into the spaces between Alex’s and he feels a sigh against the back of his neck. But he also doesn’t miss the way Alex pulls him impossibly closer against his chest.
“I need to leave soon, Jack,” he states quietly, another emotion hidden in his tone since Jack can’t see Alex's face.
“Can you stay until the morning?” Jack asks the question before he can stop it from leaving his lips. He squeezes their hands together. The action feels somewhat clumsy, it’s not often that they hold hands. “We’ve both gotta get up for class. I’ll make coffee, you can borrow a shirt.”
“He’ll wonder where I was,” Alex answers though there isn’t anything combative in his voice.
“Will he?”
They’re both silent for a few moments but they both know there’s an answer that’s been said regardless. Alex presses his lips against the back of Jack’s neck and it feels like he’s struck a match against the skin.
“Goodnight, Jack.”
And as both of their breathing evens out while they stay pressed against each other under the sheets, Jack’s final thought before stumbling into sleep is that maybe he wouldn’t mind getting burned.

description: fratboy!cal au with a LOT of vine references // part one of a 4 part series: a year in the life of calum and his roommate.  writers note: a little something i’ve been writing for my baby @ashtonsos, enjoy! wordcount: 1638

fall
"Shouldn't you be studying?" You looked up from your phone when you heard your dorm mate's husky voice. "Piss off frat." You huffed and you returned your gaze back at your screen. "I didn't know you participated in these kinds of events, Gilmore, especially a carwash. I like it. Will we be seeing you on top of our cars soon?" Calum laughed when you rolled your eyes at the nickname Calum gave you when the two of you met for the first time.
You had moved in a week before classes started, Calum arrived on the final moving day, the Friday before the start of the year. He threw his stuff in his room and tried to introduce himself, the cool and popular frat boy, to his new roommate, a girl with her hair bundled up in two messy braids and surrounded with empty to-go coffee cups. You were already studying when he first entered the shared living room. In the background, an episode of Gilmore Girls was playing. “It’s white noise for me.” You explained when he asked why the television was on but you weren’t really watching it. “It helps me study.” You shrugged and re-focused on your schoolwork. “My name Calum by the way, if you were interested.” He sighed and that was that. The two of you would exchange some greetings when you ran into each other in the dorm but you would completely ignore each other on campus. A few weekends in, Calum walked into the living room again, all dressed up for the first frat party of the year. You were watching Gilmore Girls, again, and drinking coffee, again. “Well Gilmore,” Calum started, “are you going to be a buzzkill and watch this show the whole evening or are you going to be fun and come to this party with me?” “What do you think, frat boy.” You respond lazily and paused the show. Calum lifted one eyebrow, a cocky expression appearing on his face. A deep sigh escaped your lips. “You know what. You just go your way, I’ll go mine. Ok?” Calum shrugged. “Okay.” “And you know, if we’re ever meant to be friends, which I doubt, I’ll meet you there. Now, let me watch my show in peace, and please don’t be too loud when you come barging in with some blonde sorority chick?” The boy laughed, shook his head, and nodded in agreement. “Sure Gilmore, whatever you want.”
“Wait…” Calum says, “Don’t tell me you’re actually in a sorority and you’re not some weird study girl who goes to college only to get a diploma?” “I am not.” You answered annoyed, “I’m only doing this because a friend needed some extra hands.” Calum chuckled. “So, what do you want, frat boy?” You asked, finally putting away your phone. “I want what everybody wants,” he shrugged, “I want to have my car washed by one of those sexy sorority girls.” You rolled your eyes and accepted the money Calum gave you, in exchange for a carwash ticket. “You can leave your car there,” you explained to him, pointing to the parking space on your left side. “Some of those sexy sorority girls will be there any minute.” Calum took the ticket from your hands, his fingertips brushing against the palm of your hands. The touch felt hot against your skin, making you pull your hand back as fast as possible. Calum didn’t seem to notice your reaction to the touch, as he tucked away the little paper in his short, before jogging back to his friends.
"Oof, it's hot out today." The voice of Calum seemed to haunt you today. “Did not expect to see you on top of a car. How’s the weather up there Roomie?" You sighed, rolled your eyes, and looked down into Calum's dark brown eyes. "Wouldn't you like to know, weather boy." You said with a sarcastic tone and lifted your eyebrows awaiting a snarky comment from the brown-haired boy. Calum chuckled, shook his head, and pushed his friends towards the other cars. "C'mon mates, let's see if our cars are not dented and let vine girl here do her job." He and his friends walked away to a new victim to annoy. You shook your head, kind of confused that Calum didn't bite back and you finished washing the car.
“You’re SO owning me one.” You hissed at your friend when you attempted to get all the soap off of your clothes. “Of course,” your friend laughed, “I’ll buy you all the coffee and carrot cake you want, okay?” A genuine smile appeared on your face when you embraced your friend. “Yes, I’d like that very much.” “Now?” “Now, please.”
++
The first few weeks of university flew by and before you knew it Halloween was coming up. You and Calum were on relatively speaking terms after the carwash conversation and were actually able to have some sort of conversation. You would talk about some of the classes you were taking, the food you wanted to order, asking if the other person would also like some tacos, and there was even some small talk about the possibility of hosting one of many Halloween parties on campus. "The fuck is all this?" Calum asked when entering the dorm room after a long day of lectures and studying. "It's frikking bats." You responded, proudly looking at your Halloween decorations. "I love Halloween.” Calum chuckled, hearing you use one of his favorite vines. “I love that vine.” You turned around with such speed you needed to reach for the couch to steady yourself. “You? Love vines?” You asked excitingly.  “Um yeah. Of course, I do. I’m not some crazy person who doesn’t know the world's greatest comedy alive?!” “I’m starting to like you more and more, weather boy.”  “You’re not so bad yourself, Gilmore.”
++
The Halloween party was a success. Not only because everybody showed up and the campus police had to shut it down but also because you and Calum finally understood each other and were developing an actual friendship. The two of you would hang out on campus and would go out for lunch together every other Saturday. When you arrived at your favorite coffee house, ordered your favorite breakfast, you would sit down on the faded, brown leather couches overlooking the campus. “God I really needed this coffee.” You sighed when you took your first sip. “These tests and papers are kicking my ass.” Calum patted on your head to let you know he felt for you and took a bite of his chocolate chip pancakes. “Just two more weeks and it’s Christmas break. We’re almost there, Gilmore.” You nodded and nuzzled yourself on the big couch, watching the people walking outside and waiting at the register.
“It’s so weird seeing that girl with that guy. They totally don’t fit together.” You felt the eyes of the two blonde sorority girls, standing near the register, burning on your skin. You tapped Calum on his leg, trying to get his attention. “Girls are talking about us again.” You whispered and took another sip of your cappuccino. Calum shrugged and patted your leg. “So what if they’re talking. I don’t really care. I’d rather sit here with you and be talked about, than stand there with those two blondes and being talked about.” A smile crept on your face and you tried to ignore the two girls talking about you.
“You know what I heard though.” “What?” “They are roommates.”
“’Mah god, they are roommates.” The two of you mumbled in sync.
++
It was a typical Saturday night on campus, everybody either went out or went on dates. When Calum finally emerged from the bathroom after taking an hour to get himself ready he puts up a little fashion show for you. “And?” Calum asked, attempting to impersonate runway models. “Don’t I look dapper.” You looked up from your book and checked Calum out. He’s wearing his white button-up shirt, which hugs his arms perfectly, a classic pair of black jeans and some black loafers. You slowly bit your lip when you looked into the boy's brown eyes. “Yes…” you said softly. The boy smiled back and walked towards the door to get his coat and steals one last glance in the mirror. “Well, I’ll be seeing you tomorrow. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Calum joked and he looked at you, all tucked in under your favorite blanket on your favorite lazy chair. For a second Calum doubted if he should leave. For a second he wondered what it would be like to just stay here and maybe cuddle with you under the big pile of blankets, watching your favorite series and having you falling asleep against his chest. The thoughts got rudely interrupted by your sweet voice.
“Bye Calum!” You shooed and you gave him a small wave. "And remember.” You said quickly when Calum opened the door. Calum looked at you hopefully, hoping you would ask him to come home early, asking him not to leave, but you didn’t seem to notice the change in his eyes when you continued your sentence.
"Nobody will ever be able to hate you more than you already hate yourself.” And with that remark, your attention went back to the book you were holding in your hand. Calum closed the door leaving you behind with a soft sigh, failing to see you wiping away a single tear.
With the sound of the closing door, you threw your book away in frustration and buried your face in Calum’s green hoodie you used as an extra pillow. Sniffing the familiar scent of your roommate you thought back to a few weeks ago. Ever since the Halloween party, something had shifted in the friendship between the two of you.

Post two
Diana
Diana smiled indulgently resting a hand on Donna’s shoulder.
“Hello Donna, it is wonderful to see you again, I have some exciting news.”
Donna
She fidgeted awkwardly trying to act like she hadn't been eavesdropping.
Diana
“You are finally going to see the Man’s World. Go pack your bags, we will leave once you say your goodbyes. We can discuss the rules of your mission in my plane.”
Her excitement was only shown by the joyful flash in her eyes.
Donna attempted to keep her face in a soft smile with her eyes telling her emotions
much like her older sister does, as she made her way towards her home.
Scene 6
Bruce sat at the kitchen counter a cup of steaming coffee in one hand, while his face rested heavily in the other.
Alfred
Alfred curved around Bruce to top off his drink and use a rag to clean up a puddle of coffee Bruce had spilled while complaining about League business.
“I don’t understand why you can’t just let the boy have friends, master Bruce.”
Bruce
Bruce looked up exasperated from where his face was resting.
“Because Dick is more skilled and intelligent than all of those other ‘heroes’. I don’t want him to be influenced by those immature, idiotic, side kicks. Who knows what one of those older kids could encourage him to do!? He’s much safer at home.”
He said moving his hand sharply to the left spilling coffee all over the counter.
Alfred sighed deeply moving to clean up the coffee, sending Bruce a disapproving stare while he sheepishly averted his gaze. Dick was upstairs in his beautiful, pink-marbled bathroom leaning over the counter worriedly applying concealer to purple bruises on his neck as Tate Agile played in the background, he stopped for a moment to read to a text from ‘science lab partner’.
Dick
“Come on dude, it's not that big of a deal Bs never gonna know”
Dick sighed becoming even more concerned, he glanced in the mirror frowning at his reflection before replying.
“Idk Babs, I’d be in a ton of trouble if B found out”
He stared at his phone for a couple of seconds then added,
“Especially since you’re like a little too old for me”
Dick’s hand squeezed around his phone as he shut his eyes, he counted to ten silently before exhaling. Pretending he wasn’t waiting for her response he went back to covering up the bruises on his neck, despite his eyes flicking back over to the black screen every couple of seconds.
Yet when the phone finally pinged he hesitated, it wasn't until the second text arrived that he actually answered.
“No, our age difference really isn’t that big, if you think about it people get married with like a 10 year diff.”
“Are you gonna come out w me tonight?”
Dick sighed softly, his cheeks lighting up pink.
“Yeah I got some free time around 12-2am. But we’re just gonna hang out ok, just like a little bit of kissing. No making out or hickies or anything.”
His phone pinged again.
“Haha yeah sure that's what you said last time.”
“What's up w your schedule man? 12-2am is so random.”
“You might not need sleep but I do, next time we should just meet up during like second period or something.”
Dick’s frown deepened.
“I’m not skipping school. I think you’re a bad influence on me:(“
“You know we don’t have to do anything when we meet up we could just cuddle or something.”
He paused before deleting the last message.
“Ha, maybe I like making you into a bad boy”
“See you tonight, maybe I’ll make you break into the school to find the best secret makeout place!”
Dick set his phone face down, scratching at his arm he went back to covering up those bruises.
Scene 7
Wally was in his tiny little bathroom that looks like it was designed in the 1950’s. He was leaning over the tiled blue and turquoise countertop messing with his forever windswept hair. There was a loud banging at the door as Wally dragged a brush through the birdsnest on top of his head.
Wally
There was a brief pause before Wally once again dragged the brush through his messy hair. The banging returned causing Wally to jerk smacking his hand against the counter, he turned and opened the door staring annoyed at his uncle.
“What?”
Barry
Barry stared back a pleased smirk on his face leaning against the door frame.
“Come on kiddo, we’re gonna be late.”
He reached out and plucked the brush from Wally’s hand as he spoke.
Wally
Wally did a full body groan leaning back, he shot one last mournful look at himself in the mirror before he moved towards the door, his uncle disappearing into his room. Wally sighed rummaging through his room for his suit. “What's the point of having super speed if you’re gonna be late to everything?”
Barry
Barry zipped over to his nephew ruffling his hair, effectively ruining any improvement Wally had managed.
“I ask myself the same question everyday when I show up late for work.”
Flying down the streets of central the two speedsters made haste, two flashes of red and yellow sped down the streets and around buildings. Stopping quickly at a hotdog vendor, handing the man a red credit card decorated with tiny lightning bolts, the city's way of thanking the heroes. Before getting back on the road.
Flash
“So kiddo, are ya nervous?”
Flash called stuffing a whole hot dog in his mouth.
Kidflash
Kidflash made a contemplative noise, looking down at his feet.
“Well yeah, I’m not exactly good at making friends,... or being cool.”
Both speedsters came to a halt, Kidflash resumed looking down self-deprecatingly, shoving the last 12 hotdogs into his mouth. Flash slipped behind him resting a hand on his shoulder.
Flash
“Don’t worry kiddo, just be yourself they’re gonna love you!”
He punctuated his statement by ruffling his nephew’s hair one last time. The two then proceeded, one at a time to enter the transporter.
Scene 8
Kidflash stepped into the JL headquarters quickly moving to catch up with his uncle as he sped towards the monitor room.
Flash
“Welcome to the Justice League break room!”
Flash called happily swinging his arms open to fully display the room. He leaned in close,
“It used to just be the monitor room but we all started to hang around here, mostly because Wonder Woman and Supes like to annoy Bats.”
He said with a nod.
Wonder Girl sat alone on the edge of one of the ugly green couches, sipping on a mug of herbal tea periodically.
Flash
Flash bumped his shoulder against Kidflash’s, whispering an encouraging,
“You got this kiddo!”
The Flash then departed, walking over towards Batman and Wonder Woman chatting by the supercomputer both holding steaming cups of coffee.
Kidflash
Taking a deep breath and gathering all his courage Kidflash confidently strided over to where Wonder Girl was perched. Looming over her he plastered on his best ‘Wall-man’ smirk. Wonder Girl cocked a single eyebrow as a supercilious look settled on her lips.
“Hey gorgeous, I hope you brought your library card because you can totally check me out!”
He flinched expecting to be hit or splashed by her tea.
Wonder Girl
“Wow, I’m already regretting this,”
Wonder Girl huffed glaring at Kidflash
“Maybe I should’ve stayed home,”
She mumbled quietly to herself.
Speedy
Speedy came up behind Kf’s right purposely smacking their shoulders together before plopping down on the couch causing Wonder Girl’s tea to slosh spilling over the rim and roll down the side of her thigh.
“Ew, dude have you ever actually gotten a girl with that line?”
He asked his arms resting on the top of the couch. He then raised his hand in a halting motion.
“Nevermind don't answer that, you have loner-loser written all over you.”
Kidflash
Kidflash lost his composure striking his arms out, before bringing his hand back around to point towards himself.
“Hey! I get tons of ladies!”
Speedy
“Yeah whatever dude,”
Speedy cut him off waving his hand still resting on the top of the couch, looking in the opposite direction of the scene before him.
Garth
Garth parted from his King’s side as they entered the break room with a nod, he walked towards the other heroes, his dark eyes calculating.
“Hello, I’m Garth.”
He said before sitting down on the couch next to Speedy.
Speedy
Speedy made a face.
“Great intro fishboy! But shouldn’t you have like a superhero name?”
Garth
“No, I don’t have a secret identity.”
Garth spoke, his tone relaying how idiotic he thought Speedy was.
Kidflash
“What about protecting your family man?”
Kidflash asked, lifting both his eyebrows, he was never able to just move one, leaning towards Garth.
Garth
Garth’s eyebrows pulled together as frustration took over.
“I don't wear a mask, villains will know who I am regardless.”
Speedy
“Wonder Girl doesn’t wear a mask,”
Speedy said leering at Garth.
“Maybe we should come up with a dumb superhero name for you, personally I like Fishboy!”
Kidflash laughed loudly, Wonder Woman groaned standing up and walking towards her sister.
She was stopped by the Flash calling them over in an energetic voice waving the rest of the sidekicks towards them.
Green Arrow
Green arrow spoke first giving all of the teens a cursory glance before focusing completely on his own sidekick.
“Now listen up, this mission is very important to your future as legitimate heroes.”
Within his brief pause Black Canary sighed heavily at Green Arrow's natural talent for being a terrible parent. He moved one hand to his hip as he spoke lightly elbowing Aquman in the process.
“All ya gotta do is sit and watch your targets,”
Once again there was a lapse in his speech when he turned to check that Batman had brought up the images of the targets and the suspicious big black bags, as well as the address of their hideout. After seeing Batman had in fact project the correct information, Green Arrow nodded to himself before turning back toward the sidekicks. Jerking his thumb backwards, he continued.
“These are them.”
He took a moment to clear his throat at the odd phrasing.
Flash
Flash took that moment to take over patting his colleague’s shoulder as he stepped closer to the center of the group.
“We’ve been monitoring these guys’ set up for a couple weeks. We think that they’re smuggling something illegal in those big black bags-”
Speedy
“What do you mean “illegal” things?! Don't we get to know if there's gonna be guns or drugs or something, idiot-man!”
Speedy cut in sharply placing both hands on his hips and leaning forward, aggressively sneering in the Flash’s face.
Green arrow placed a hand on each side of Speedy’s chest pushing him back as Flash stood there shocked.
Flash
“So we’ll drop ya off at their hideout, be very careful sneaking into the building and while choosing stalking positions. If they begin to pack up and leave or the situation starts to turn violent, stay safe and contact us before attempting to fight. If they have guns, retreat to the transporter immediately.
Batman then swiveled around in his chair, sending a questioning glance at Wonder Woman from across the room, ignoring the conclusion of Superman’s story much to his disappointment.
Batman
“Why would you send these children out into the field if you don't trust them to fight without supervision?”
It was a statement rather than a question, challenging all of the other mentors.
Wonder Woman answered anyway with a judgemental look of her own, but Green Arrow was the one who spoke.
Green arrow
Green arrow took several long strides towards batman.
“Well we’re not just gonna leave our kids at the mercy of a bunch of gun wielding scumbags. I mean, Flash can’t even stand a chance against a handgun, do ya think any side kick could survive that?!”
Batman
Batman glared at him but spoke in a calm voice, only failing a little to keep the smugness out of his tone.
“Robin could.”
Aquaman
Green Arrow geared up to make another loud and spity remark but Aquaman spoke up for the first time since the debriefing began.
“If he is so proficient then why is he not here?”
He questioned with far more smugness in his tone.
Batman
“Because Robin is currently working on his own personal mission tonight.”
The statement was followed by Batman swinging his chair back around and continuing to type up a mission statement.
The group dispersed most of the sidekicks getting last minute pep talks, Kidflash who reached out to his uncle grabbing his elbow as he went to go carbo-load.
Flash
The flash turned to look at his nephew.
“What’s up kiddo?”
He asked, placing a hand on each of his shoulders looking at his face in concern.
Kidflash
Kidflash looked down taking a deep breath before locking eyes with his uncle.
“I-I don't know if I can do this uncle B.”
Flash
Flash answered with a sigh rubbing rough but soothing circles on his shoulders and nape.
“Alright listen kiddo, ya made a jerk out of yourself.”
kidflash‘s face whipped up to face his uncle.
“I know I flirt with all the ladies but I do so in a joking manner that means no harm or a promise for furthering the relationship...just apologize to Wonder Girl.”
Kidflash made a face at the ground scuffing his shoe against the shiny tile floor.
“Make some small talk when appropriate on the mission and you’ll have three new best friends in no time!”
Flash turned him around to face the other sidekicks and smacked him on the back pushing him forward.
Scene 9
A wide shot of the seedier area of Arizona, several of the lamp posts have been shattered and no longer work, streams of light shine across the wet road through boarded up windows of an old warehouse. The sidekicks crouched behind a stack of molding crates, listening intently as the goons played cards and chatted about their personal lives, peering at them periodically.
Roy
Roy groaned softly clunking his head against the rotten wood.
“This is so boring! They aren’t doing anything, I say we just jump ‘em now!”
Roy whispered looking expectantly at his teammates.
Garth
Garth glared annoyed, grabbing Speedy’s wrist in a surprisingly strong grip.
“We were given direct orders-”
Speedy
Speedy shoved his flat palm into Garth’s face creating space between them.
“Calm down Fishboy, I’d never go against our wise and fearless mentors’ orders,”
Speedy sneered, ripping his arm from Garth and rubbing his wrist.

Stormy Nights (M!Sam x MC)
A/N: This story is more focused on my MC, Desiree Fine’s relationship with the twins than it is Sam but there’s a pinch of Sam x MC romance/fluff. I’ll probably write more fics with Sam x MC as the center focus down the line. Either way I hope you all enjoy!
Summary: When a thunderstorm wakes the boys late at night, they seek out the comfort of their nanny.
Rating: G
Background Pairing: M!Sam x MC
The heavy sound of pitter-patter on the window relaxes Desiree as she walks out of her bathroom toward her warm king-sized bed. She wraps her hair up in a silk hair scarf as she collapses on the center of the bed and sighs in relief. It had been nothing short of an eventful day with the twins. First, she had the boys clean up their room. This is usually a hard sale to the two seven-year-olds on a Saturday morning, but with the incentive of getting extra dessert after dinner, a deal was made. After a thorough inspection, the three ate breakfast, got showered, and dressed for the day’s outing to the Central Park Zoo. She secretly hoped Sam was able to join them but with him being called into work unexpectedly with the high chance of staying late, it was out of the question. Desiree brushed off the twinge of disappointment and instead focused on the busy day ahead.
Once they arrived, the excitement on Mickey and Mason’s face warmed her heart as they both eagerly pulled her all over the zoo. The three spent the entire afternoon bouncing from exhibit to exhibit. During the ride home and over dinner both boys couldn’t stop talking about all the fun they had and the cool facts they learned. Looking back on today, it brought a smile to her face even in the wake of her newfound exhaustion. As she settles into the comforter and lays her head on the silk pillows, she closes her eyes and welcomes the persistent fall of rain to lull her to sleep. Not long after as her breathing slows, the bellows of thunder crashing outside cause her eyes to fly open.
Turning on her bedside lamp Desiree sits up and lays her back against her headboard and sighs,
“Guess, I won’t be falling asleep anytime soon. At least the boys-- ”
Her bedroom door creaks as it opens slowly. Desiree turns to the direction of the noise and notices the silhouette of a ruffled head boy casted on the wall.
“Hello?” she calls out.
“Umm...mmm…” the small nervous voice answered.
“Mason, is that you? You can come in.”
Just as the words left her mouth, another round of roaring thunderclaps. The sandy brown hair boy pushes the door open further, rushes into Desiree’s room, and stops a few feet short of the foot of her bed.
“How’d you know it was me?” he asked, surprised as he pushed his glasses from the bridge of his nose.
“Lucky guess. You’re supposed to be asleep, mister. Are you okay?”
“I know I am. And no-- not really.”
“It’s the thunder isn’t it?”
A streak of lightning flashes and causes Mason to jump. The boy whimpers and inches so he’s leaning directly on the bed.
“Yes. I’m a big baby aren’t I?” he asks sadly.
“And what makes you think that?”
“Well, Mickey is still in our room. I tried to get him to come with me, but he said only babies are scared of thunderstorms.”
Desiree patted the spot next to her and then stretched her outs out to Mason. Without hesitation, he climbs into bed with her and nestles into Desiree’s right side.
“Now Mason, don’t listen to your brother. There’s nothing wrong with admitting you’re scared. Actually, can you keep a secret?”
“Of course.”
Desiree leans closer to Mason and whispers,
“I’m scared of thunderstorms too.”
“Really,” he looks up at Desiree with shock evident in his eyes.
“Yep. And I’m not a baby, am I?”
“No way! You’re one of the bravest people I know! But Mickey is going to tease me about being a baby still.”
“I doubt he will, if he did he’d have to tease himself,” Desiree reassures as she rubs his arms.
“What do you mean?”
Knowing how different yet similar the twins can be, Desiree has an inkling that Mickey might be just as affected by the storm as his brother. Not even thirty seconds after Mason spoke, another sound of the booming thunder shakes the room. Mason shrieks loudly and pulls the cover over his head while from the hallway pounding feet is heard. Desiree coaxes Mason from under the cover just as Mickey skids into the room. The boy dressed in the plaid green pajamas leans on the wall as Desiree smirks to herself knowing why he’s come.
“Hi, Mickey. Is the thunder bothering you too?”
The proud boy crosses his arms and shakes his head.
“No way. I just couldn’t sleep with the baby screaming.”
Desiree shoots a pointed look as she scolds him.
“Mickey, don’t be mean to your brother like that. It's not nice. Apologize.”
Mickey looks to his brother with a shameful expression mutter,
“I’m sorry, Mason.”
“It’s okay.”
“You know Mickey, did you know I’m scared of the thunder too,” Desiree tells him.
“No. Are you really?”
“I sure am. But I’m so glad Mason came here. Now I don’t have to be scared alone. When you have someone with you, it makes it all a little less scary.
“Yeah, that makes sense I think.”
“Well, Mason didn’t mean to scream and we’re fine. You could go back to your room.” Desiree says slyly.
Mickey's voice wavers as he responds,
“Back in my room? By myself?”
“Yeah. Unless you want to stay in here with us.”
Mickey looks down at his bare feet and kicks a speck of invisible dirt as he answers.
“If it’s less scary to have someone with you when you’re scared, then if I’m with you both it would be even less scary.”
Smirking, Desiree says, “You’re absolutely right, Mickey. So does that mean you’re gonna stay in my room?”
“Yeah!”
Mickey then runs and launches himself onto the bed, settling on the left side of Desiree and makes himself comfortable by laying his head on her lap. She chuckles at the sudden added weight.
“Woah! Comfy I take it?”
“Mhmm-hmm.”
“What now?” Mason asks.
She looks to the alarm clock on the other bedside table and sees the numbers 11:15 illuminated in red lighting.
“What’s next is me getting you two back to sleep. It's way past your bedtimes.”
“Awww! Do we have to?” complained Mickey.
“Yes, you do. Your dad won’t be happy when he comes, if you two are still up.”
“Can we sleep here?” Mason asks with pleading eyes.
Desiree was planning to let them sit with her for a few minutes before walking them back to their room. However, still hearing the persistent rumbles, heavy rainfall, and being pestered by puppy dog expressions from the boys she reconsidered.
“Okay. Just this once you two. But you have to go to sleep.”
“You’re the best!” the boys exclaimed.
The two get extra comfortable as Desiree starts to move to give them more space when they reach to stop her.
“No, don’t get up,” Mickey says.
“Please stay, Desiree?”
Smiling, Desiree relaxes back against the headboard and puts her arm around Mason, rubbing his back in soothing patterns, and with her left hand, she starts to playfully run her fingers through Mickey’s hair.
“Better, you two?”
The two murmur soft replies as Desiree’s movement guides them to sleep.
“Desiree? Will you sing to us?”
“Oh, you two don’t want to hear me sing, Mason.”
“Sure we do. We can hear you when you’re cooking in the kitchen. You have a pretty voice.” Mickey chimes in.
“Alright. What do you want to hear?”
“Anything.” the twins say at the same time.
They snuggle even closer into Desiree as their eyes fight to stay open. She thinks for a second before her angelic voice takes over.
“Look at me. I’m as helpless as a kitten
And I feel like I’m clinging to a cloud
I can’t understand, I get misty just by holding your hand...”
Gently singing, she loses herself to the point that she didn’t notice the soft snores of the boys nor the light footsteps quickly approaching from the hallway. As the last note falls from her lips and having the warmth from the comforter plus the heavyweight of the boys securing her in place, Desiree can’t help but doze off. Her breathing slows and pulls her further away from consciousness.  She barely feels the added pressure of more weight, or the smell of the mixed aroma of black coffee and musky cologne, nor a light feathered kiss left on her forehead. Shutting off the bedside lamp, Sam trails silently out of Desiree’s room, smiling at the sight before him as he leaves. The sight of his two--  three favorite people sleeping peacefully.

The Back Rooms
Tumblr media
If this topic makes you uncomfortable then do not read the rest of this post.
.
So, what are the Back Rooms? For anyone who doesn't know, it is an empty endless maze known to seem familiar to certain people due to experiencing a dream I'm which they visit this place. Many find the Back Rooms disturbing and anxiety inducing. Some people rumour it to have separate levels/floors. And some have claimed to see dangerous beings hiding around the corners.
Now, the Back Rooms we know of are a specific looking place. It's like a giant empty garage but looks like an office building. It has nearly nothing inside it and no doors.
I want to talk about how I perceive the Back Rooms. I believe it to be more of a concept rather than this specific place. I feel that everyone who visits the Back Rooms will experience it differently and it may not look like the one that everyone thinks about. Not that the one we think about doesn't exist, but rather people have personal Back Rooms unique to their own dreams. I also claim that there are some people who have multiple backrooms. Such as I.
The problem I have is, there are no pictures I can find that are similar enough to the Back Rooms I've seen. So I will try my best to explain my experiences. If I ever draw them, I will post them. But it might not happen as I'm not very good with drawing backgrounds or architecture.
.
Back Room 1: Hotel
This back Room is not as hard to picture. There is no lobby. There are no elevators. There are multiple floors (how many there are is unknown to me but there are at least 3). There are many stairs. The floor is dark carpet. It could be brown, orange, or red but I'm not sure due to the lighting. The lighting is very yellow and orange. Walls appear yellow and doors are brown wood. There are numbers at the middle top of the doors. Numbers are double digit and never single digits. They could be triple digits but I can't remember if I've ever seen that. Numbers are either gold or silver (I'm unsure of which). Hall ways are long and skinny.
I have heard voices and screams. Screams are rare, but everytime I hear them, I assume that someone has been murdered (I don't know why). I don't see people often, but when I do, they usually are staff and dressed very nicely. Like a butler. They do not interact with me and I don't ever interact with them either. People always stand off to the side of the hallways. Mostly my left side and I hardly look to my right.
There are no vending/ice machines. No bathrooms. No pools and no gym. If there is a lobby, I've never seen it or been able to reach it. All I know is that it would be the first floor if it does exist. And there is no basement. Doors don't open, but when they do it's just a different Back Room.
Back Room 2: Apartment building
Very similar to the Hotel except there are no rooms/doors on my right side when walking Southwards. Lighting is blue/grey. No stairs. Multiple story building.
There are no people inside. No noises.
There is a balcony at the top floor with a black metal railing. It's like patio and not the roof. Looking over the railing is a city with grey clouds. Cars but no people. No noise. There are a few times where I've been here and have contemplated jumping, but I only ever remember falling over/being pushed over. I do not feel fear when I'm falling. I rarely remember hitting the ground. I only feel fear when looking over the edge.
Back Room 3: Bathrooms
Okay, so this one is very complicated as I've seen a few versions of these Back Rooms. The general idea is that there are many doors and many rooms that are all considered bathrooms.
These usually appear as being inside a school and is an abandoned part that was used by students after P.E. they are white but sometimes the lighting is a bit dim but never dark. Lights are consistent and do not flicker. Floors are tiled or just glossed over concrete (think of a nice garage floor). It isn't cold or hot. There are no noises unless an appliance is in use. Sometimes there are boys but whenever I see them I apologize and run into a different room. I'm usually alone but never feel lonely. I am always safe but I sometimes have fear (usually if I'm naked or using a toilet).
Boys bathrooms will have many tubs with no curtains. Sometimes there toilets with stalls but there are no doors to them.
Sometimes there a lot of girls. Sometimes I get a lil freaky with them but that's rare. However most of the time there are girls present, I will feel a bit pervy. I do not spy though.
Girl bathrooms have multiple showers and sometimes multiple toilet stalls with doors, but some of the stalls only have a drain and no toilet. Some showers have curtains and some do not. Showers are hot and produce steam into the room. It's nice. Sometimes when I'm done showering, I can't find my clothes or towel. I get embarrassed and nervous when this happens and try to hide from anybody coming in.
There are no mirrors in these "bathroom" Back Rooms. These are the Back Rooms that I visit the most. I do use the toilets when I have to pee IRL but I promise you that I never pee in my sleep. I just use the toilet in my dream and when I'm done, I realize that I still feel the need to pee and that's when I realize I am dreaming and wake up.
.
So these are the top 3 Back Rooms that I see the most. I do have other Back Rooms that I visit. If you want to know more then I can make another post. Just that this would be cool to talk about. Sorry this post was so long.

26. Part 3
Tumblr media
Looking around my daughter’ room, I just need to know I have everything ready for her. Like I am just being random, but I just woke up because I needed to pee but then it came to mind, have I got everything I needed. I know I did, I got everything, but I need to make sure I got plenty of diapers, but I am just wondering. I am more than happy with this room, she is getting everything I never got, and she is a queen, will be treated like one. Chris has yet to do the crib in our room, you never know we may keep her in our room for a while, but this room is perfection, it looks like a queen is giving birth to a future princess, but she is. She is super lucky; her room is direct opposite of our room. Because the way the stairs come up, it breaks the rooms up in a way, but her room is opposite ours which I like but I know this whole house would need babyproofing badly, everything here is not childproof at all, it’s scary. But I should go back to bed, but I will just go down, I did sleep better then I usually do so that is ok and that is thanks to Chris for snuggling me, putting the cream on me and also giving up his side of the bed. I am lucky to have him with me, I sighed out turning back on myself. I feel myself waddling, it’s actually not cute but I am waddling now. I did think I would have an easier pregnancy, like the model type but in real life I am a mess. I have not got ready for much, just Chris coming back, I don’t feel sexy like Chris says but Chris has no filter, he would say it to me in a joke, but he hasn’t so maybe it is just me feeling it.
The blinds rose up automatically as I got down the steps, one of many fancy things this place has which I like. It senses its morning and the sun is rising so the first person that comes down triggers to put the blinds up, let me open the door for the dog. He is probably waiting on someone to open the door so he can come up. It’s a little cold downstairs, looking out of the window, oh it’s snowed a little so no wonder. Opening the door for the downstairs “Zeus, come up boy” I said, he will come up when he pleases, I been contemplating on if I should get my chef back in my life, I think I may do it until I am back to normal functioning life but maybe I can just do it myself, why can’t I just be a normal pregnant woman. Hearing the scurrying behind me, either Chris cuts his hair, or he gets some professional. The dog’ hair is long as fuck “morning” Zeus always sniffs my bump, I don’t know why “yes, it’s a baby in there. Shall we cook breakfast, you don’t want to go out today. It’s cold out there” Zeus walked with me side by side to the kitchen, I am getting used to this big thing now, he’s not all that bad, he is better then Chris anyways because he keeps me company for longer then he does when sleeping, Chris moves off after a while.
Bopping my head along to the radio playing in the background as I made breakfast for all “hey Google, can you wake up the house” I said aloud, we going to wake up the house without walking up no stairs. I can’t wait for this home to be filled, after the baby born then I can start having my people back, holiday will be over. I can get family here to see me, it’s just going to be good vibes “waking everyone up now” I like the Google shit I have in this home, looking down on the floor, Zeus is laying there and doesn’t move unless I leave the room. It’s hard to get him to go downstairs, he doesn’t move at all because he wants to come with me but it’s very protective of him, I like that “oh, not heard this in a while” as No Guidance started to play on the radio, going to my phone. Mel has been texting me, she misses me for once. We are usually in each other’s pockets but since being married and pregnant this is the main priority in my life, but things will be back to normal, she will be back soon. Unlocking my phone, tapping on Instagram. Tapping on the plus sign and adding to my story, aiming my camera at Zeus and panning to the cooker and stopped it, tapping in a caption ‘who needs a man when you got this big ball of fluff’ pressing send, let them have a meltdown over that, which barely shows much.
“Robbie, I don’t like this loud noise that be waking up. It’s not nice” my mom is the first to come down “but you’re here, I made breakfast for us. I hope the boys come down next” my mom is not impressed, she is not impressed because the way she has come down with her wig lopsided and a robe on “come here mommy” walking around the counter “you look very happy today Robyn” fixing her wig “I am” pressing a kiss to her forehead “I am in less pain, and I just saw a different side to Chris. Like you know he is an idiot, every time he is stupid about things” moving back from my mom “I had a warm bath like the nurse said, he helped me out of the bathtub, so I don’t fall. He watched me that I didn’t fall in the bathroom on the marble flooring then, I didn’t want him to do it. Like I was nervous about it and I wanted the pads, but I did it, he put cream there where it’s hurting. I was scared because what if he did it wrong, but he didn’t, he was so gentle with me mom, and it was then I knew how much he loves me, like that love is deep to be doing that. For anyone” my mom’ eyes widened “he did that?” my mom said “he did, like he did it. I wouldn’t even get my own mother to do that, just the nurse because they are trained in that and generally, partners don’t do it?” my mom looks impressed “and you feel better too?” nodding my head “he has impressed me, not even your own father would do that” I chuckled.
They eventually came down; I mean I did need to call Dennis twice, but he finally came down “the pancake is cold” raising an eyebrow looking at Chris “you came down late? The hell you want me to do. Warm it up for you when I am eating myself?” Chris nodded his head “your thighs are warm enough” rolling my eyes at him “I heard what you did for my daughter, it just brings me so much peace that you will be there for her. No matter what people say about you, they don’t know you and I am so happy with you. That is something many men will not do for their partners, even be here for them like this. You are someone many don’t know, the real you” I died a little inside, my mom is mentioning it at the table “did Chris make your butt better?” Dennis snorted laughing “be quiet you!” Chris looked shocked, he was not expecting that “uh thank you Monica, it wasn’t a choir for me. I did it because it’s what is right for her, with Robyn I would do anything for her. I know she felt a little weird about it but like I seen it. she is the only one I would do that for. Like I joke about it, but I would. I know like how it will be for her; she will take lots of rest. She seems happy so I am happy” the buzzer went off for the gate “I will check” Chris said, nodding my head “things are quiet, don’t you think?” I said to Dennis “to you! You’re in your bubble” Dennis said laughing “things are still a mess, oh girl. Nothing is quiet, Roc Nation seemed to have tried to handle it weird enough. I think they are scared of you; they are scared on what is next” they should be “it’s a parcel, I will get it” Chris got up “cool, probably for the baby. I be ordering a lot of shit” which I have been, some things I don’t think I needed to get.
Furrowing my eyebrows “where that nigga go?” it’s so quiet and he never came back “so I was thinking, we could sell this to Netflix. Remember how Amazon outbid Netflix but I think with this we should aim for Netflix” pulling a face “but Amazon, I like them. As a team, they are very much involved. See what happens, I am warming to the idea anyways. I am just literally counting down the days until this lady is here, I feel it so much Dennis, the tightening. The heaviness. I feel my pussy is coming out” Dennis laughed out “he is so sweet Robyn; I have to say it again. I am in shock, to hear he did that for you. I am happy to go back once this is over” my mom is so impressed with Chris, Dennis looked behind me and then I felt a hand on my shoulder “there is so much mail Robyn, like there is boxes of things. Also the team are fixing the tree up for us” looking up at Chris “I didn’t do that, really? Where is the stuff?” I mean I have been ordering but not that much “in the hallway, just filled. I see some Fenty boxes too, and also Adidas. Maybe they are gifts” my eyes lit up “I love gifts, I want to see” getting up from the chair “come and help me” looking up at Chris “and I need you to shave this stubble” I grinned at him.
I gasped “oh my god, what is all this!?” I half shouted, “can you like move it all to the second living room, because the people are doing the tree aren’t they?” Chris sighed out “man, do I have too. Is Dennis going to help me?” turning around “I will help you there brother Chris” I laughed at this bromance, they have bonded “I think this is gifts from Bey, she has some new line from Adidas and I remember seeing the box so that is it. I won’t be able to fit in that yet. That is Dior” I know these boxes “also that is Fendi, why did these all come at the same time. Roc Nation too? Chile, what they sent us” I am scared about that box now, it’s probably some dead rat in here, they hate my ass “how does that dickhead know we live here?” Chris said, seeing the box “OVO, ok then. Erm, possibly Mel may have, I am not sure but Jay Brown knows where I live, I did tell him” Chris is not impressed, Chris is picking at the tape to open it “he has a fucking nerve to do that, he wrote a whole diss track about you” Chris managed to rip it open, I wonder what he gave and the nerve of him anyways. Taking the packet from him “a baby grow” I held up and then looking into the box “he’s given baby clothes” looking up at Chris “he disrespected you so badly, that shit has pissed me. He fucking made a diss song about you” Chris is so angry “there is a note” taking it out before Chris did, opening up the note “It’s handwritten too” oh this is Drake’ handwriting “wait there!” I pointed at Chris, he is ready to come and get it at me “Rihanna, I spent days thinking about you. I spent moments where I cried, I was hurt, and I made a bad decision to make such a song. I am sorry and I hope you are happy even if it’s not with me, I want the best for you because in my eyes you are queen. Accept the gifts from October’s Very Own, and I can’t help but think Adonis will have a play friend now and we can meet and just have kid day. Love Aubrey” looking up at Chris “not even a mention of Chris?” Dennis said, oh Chris is mad “no” I pointed at him.
This is wrong but we don’t need trouble “Chris listen to me” he went to get his phone “Chris, do not and I mean do not post anything! We don’t with that, we have moved on. We are not going to write any Instagram post, because I will” Chris furrowed his eyebrows confused at what I meant “I will post some shady shit, not you. What he did was wrong. I am shocked he had the nerve to send that, he knows you are here with me. He also knows you are the father, just don’t’ get involved. I will do it. Please move the things in there” Chris will do it and then it will be something bigger, I will do it because I know what he did and I know he fucking tried to make a song about me “just calm down, help him Dennis” taking the note with me walking off, I don’t think it’s the best idea to ever get Chris to do that, not when I am trying to help rebuild his profile so people can like him again, I don’t want them to say look at the man she is with “what is it?” my mom asked “Drake” holding the note up “he didn’t mention Chris in this, he made a diss song about me. He shamed me in that studio, he didn’t know that Chris was the father, but he does now” placing the note on the kitchen counter, taking a picture of the note “so what are you going to do baby?” my mom asked “I am going to write a nice little thank you” typing out the caption ‘Octobers very own bitch sending me gifts when you wrote a diss track about me, this fatherless child doesn’t need owl for clothes! She is ok and she kindly declined the dinner date, she doesn’t like blondes boo. Imagine being such a pussy all your life that you then bully a pregnant woman….. Trash!’ pressing send, I want to say more but then I am causing havoc.
Dennis took the picture of me with all the gifts that are for my daughter, I am super happy about this, I didn’t expect it “Roc Nation doing baby grows and shit, or was that just to be cute” Chris is never happy “it works, Chris standing there complaining looks good” Dennis crouched down to me, I am like drowning in kids clothes “mhmm, it does actually. Chris, you better post a thank you, I mean it. Send it to my phone, Chris help me up” this what happens I try to be cute on the floor, now I can’t get up. Chris yanked the hood off my head “hiding in the jacket” I smiled at him “let me pick you up, don’t get up. You might hurt yourself” before I could disagree he picked me up “don’t drop me, am I heavy” the face he pulled, I am heavy for him “no” he placed me on the couch “thank you baby, I am super shocked at the gift that have been sent” Dennis held my phone to me “write the caption, and Chris, I sent the picture to you also” I hide my face with he hood on the jacket and hid my bump, I look a mess but they still know it’s me ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you! For all of the gifts sent by everyone. So many to name, this could be a long post but thank you to my Barbados family for the gifts, all of the toys, auntie the outfits are the cutest. To @kimkardashian and Kanye, her first Yeezy’s and all of the Yeezy clothing, thank you. @Beyonce @Adidas the baby grows are the cutest, Also to @Fendi @Dior @Burberry @blackpyramidofficial and my record label @rocnation my family. And such surprise from @Fenty, these unique baby clothing that my team have made, you know I would love that. I am so blessed with love and support. We are thankful!’ that is long “you done?” I asked Chris “I put thank you everyone now my back hurts from moving the boxes” shaking my head at him, he is stupid.
Poking my lips out, I feel like a baby with diaper rash because I mean it was bad enough Chris had to do it last time but it’s another night and we have to do it again “are you ready? I am going back down after, Dennis and I are playing pool” nodding my head “sure, I love the tree by the way. It makes me all gooey inside because it’s Christmas and I love Christmas. I didn’t feel it but now I do, and I get to spend it with my husband” I am super happy about the tree “it’s ok, well I wanted you to feel it. Oh and I saw the picture you posted; I was shocked. Why?” he posted a very personal picture of me, like I wasn’t even looking for him but we was sat in the living room, I was talking to my mom but I look so well, like I feel I don’t but I am just concentrating on the conversation, I don’t hate the picture but I am glad he didn’t get me looking fat “you like it? I was just playing around with my phone and I realised it was a dope picture. I was like that fucking dickhead deserves a beating for that shit. He disrespected me” he got me choked up “it was very loving from you Chris, I loved the picture and the caption, thank you” I am so loved by him “it was nothing, come on. Get on the bed” smiling at Chris “no wait, let me read the caption again” unlocking my phone, it’s the cutest “go on then, than I can put it on” such a softie he is, letting me waste his time “You said she is for everybody but she is for me, you know Rihanna but I know Robyn. That really warmed my heart thank you” Chris kissed my forehead, I love him so much.

chapter three: fire and lemons
“i'm goin' back, of course i am! as if i ever had a choice. back to what i always knew i was on the inside. back to what I really am.” -”burning bright (field on fire)”, nine inch nails
It would be another couple of days before Sam heard a peep from Joey again. In the meantime, she had picked up Metallica's phone numbers given she knew she would have more encounters with them in and around their shows, and she made a promise to a tipsy Lars to share some of her drawings when she found the chance.
Cliff offered to take Sam home but she had already been promised a ride from Marla, Frank, and Charlie back up to the Bronx; Joey hitched a ride with them given he was in no shape to drive back upstate. The last thing she saw before she left the restaurant was Cliff's thoughtful facial expression, there right behind James and Kirk; Legacy, meanwhile, were headed on back to their hotel somewhere down in Manhattan. Sam peered out the car window in time to see that boy with the little white tuft in his hair at the curb: darkness shrouded his face but she could make out the shape of the small piece of white through it all.
The warm spring night greeted her and Frank once the two of them had returned to the apartment complex for the night: Sam's knee still ached a bit as she took the steps up to her place, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it used to be before. She made a mental note to head on back to Frank's apartment to fetch that journal and make some more drawings, that time to show to Lars.
In the meantime, she used a small journal she had delved out from the bottom of her bag for doodles. She kept her mind fixated on Cliff, especially since she knew it was him at that point. Indeed, when she fell asleep on the couch that night, he appeared in the wake of her dream. The white stripe bled away into darkness and into a pair of snakes atop his head. His handsome face gazed back at her like the old stone face of a statue.
It wasn't him, but it also was. The man of her dreams, same as he ever was and always will be to her. He was in between something, somewhere, someone who graced the earth. It was Cliff. It wasn't Cliff. Somewhere in between there.
She reached out to touch him, to feel him, to get to know him, and yet he drifted away from her, much like that of a ghost in the shadows. He wondered around her as if he was about to circle his prey, but he never said anything. His deep set eyes watched her, even as he walked behind her and underneath her.
She awoke with her arms outstretched before her, such that they dangled over the edge of the couch cushions. She let her fingers curl back towards the base of her palm. So close and yet so far away from her.
Sam also recalled the promise she made to Joey, to go and hang out with him at some point that week. She had made a couple of calls to him over the course of two days but he never picked up once. She did, however, pick up his answering machine and the sound of his soft voice coupled with his distinct upstate accent. Every single time she did, she closed her eyes to relish in it.
“Hey, this is Joey Belladonna—I'm either out jammin' or playin' hockey, but you can leave a message if you'd like, please and thank you.”
It was only for a few seconds, but it was something.
He finally made the call back to her early one morning, but she was quick to pick it up there in the kitchen as she began to brew a small pot of coffee for herself.
“Hey, my li'l Sam I am,” he greeted her in a soft, broken voice.
“Hey, Joey! I've been wondering what's been going on with you.”
“I had a feelin' that was the case.” A gentle crackling noise on his end caught her attention.
“Is everything okay?” she asked him. “You don't sound good.”
“I just woke up,” he answered, “I haven't been able to get back to ya 'cause I was nursin' the hangover.”
“Oh, I see.”
“It was also one of those things where it was like—I kept forgetting to get back to you. That's kinda my fault, though. I kept forgetting and by that point, it was always like almost midnight and I figured you had already gone to sweet. So—but here I am now! How is everything?”
“Oh, you know,” she replied with a shrug of her shoulders, “—just waiting to hear back from the admissions desk at my school and doodling and whatnot. I can foresee hope of paying my rent soon.”
“That's so good,” he remarked and the crackling noise emerged from the background again. “So, uh—what you wanna do when we see each other again?”
“What do you have in mind?” Sam leaned back against the edge of the counter and folded her arms across her chest.
“Well, Metallica's coming back out this way—not this week but next Friday, I think? They haveta finish up on some important stuff for their new record. Apparently they recorded it over in Denmark so they left for there just last night and then they're comin' back here.”
“Wow. Why Denmark?”
“I dunno—sump'n 'bout the studio being cold so everything stands out better. Scott, Frankie, and Charlie know about it way more than I do. Legacy are comin' back over this way around then, too. I guess they'll be playing at L'Amour again.”
“Oh, how fun! I'd like to see them again—I wanna get to know them more.”
“Right? They're kind of at the tail end of this whole wave going around here and back out West, too. This wave of... 'speed metal' as it's known. Everyone is calling Metallica, Anthrax, and two other bands outta California, Megadeth and Slayer, as like the ones who're leading the way. Like the big ones.”
“The big four?” she followed along.
“Yeah, they're like the big four! The big four of the whole thing. And Legacy are kinda at the tail end of it 'cause they started a little later and they're still shuffling around.”
“A 'transition stage' as Zelda described it,” she recalled. “And you're part of it!”
“And I'm part of the big four! It almost feels like a movement of sorts. Although Anthrax to me feels like the oddball of the bunch 'cause y'know, we're from New York and those guys are all from your neck of the woods in California.”
“But they all frequent out this way, though,” she pointed out. “At least Metallica and Legacy do anyway.”
“They all do, yeah—we should meet up with Megadeth and Slayer at some point. The couple of times I got to meet Slayer, they were—for lack of a better word—fucking badasses. These seemingly scary looking dudes but they were real cool, though. Real friendly and genuine buncha guys. I haven't met Megadeth yet, though. We all should have a big party together some day.”
“All the parties and all the rage,” she remarked.
“All the parties and all the rage, all the world's a stage,” he waxed.
“That's good, you should write that down.”
“I ain't no song writer, though. Some people are good at that sorta thing—I don't really see myself as that.”
“But that was good, though! I liked that, Joey. You should do something of your own some day, like Stormtroopers of Death.”
“Do my own shtick and release under the label down there in the City,” he joked.
“Yeah, exactly!”
“But anyways, that's next week when Metallica are coming back from Denmark, though,” he continued, that time in a serious tone. “What about this week and before you hear back from the school people is what you wanted to know, though.”
“Exactly.”
“Well, let's see—I'm not doin' anything together. And I haven't been able to do anything, either, 'cause—you know.”
“Hungover.”
“Hungover—that lasted a little more than a day, too. But I'm back and invigorated, though.” He fell silent for a second, and the rustling noise caught her attention once again.
“What's that sound?” she asked him.
“What sound?”
“I keep hearing like this crackling sound on your end.”
“Oh, I'm layin' on my couch and there's a bunch of newspapers down on the floor and I keep brushing my foot up against it. Sometimes I don't even pay attention to what I'm doin' when I'm on the phone and—ah, shit—” More crackling on his end.
“What happened?”
“I kicked it over—hang on a sec.” Silence fell on his end: she could hear him shuffling around and doing something off of the phone. But within time, he returned to the phone and let out a long low whistle. “Here's an idea—how 'bout I drive on down there to the Bronx and come on over to your place and we play by ear there?”
“Sounds good. I'll be waiting for you.”
“It's gonna be a while—like—well, you've been up here before. It takes a while to get on down there. So—take a shower if ya wish. I know I'm gonna do that.”
“You wanna look good for me?” she teased him.
“Well...”
“Well?” She raised her eyebrows even though he couldn't see her.
“I won't deny it, but I also need a shower,” he finished in a single breath. “I smell like an empty liquor bottle.”
“Oh, yeah—get in that shower, big fella.”
He laughed at that and within time, they hung up, and Sam made her way to the bathroom for a warm shower and a fresh change of clothes. She knew she would have to return home from her day with Joey soon enough given the thought about her attending school hung over her. An excuse to get away from there and a reason for him to get away from that awful feeling.
Indeed, as the warm water cascaded over her head and shoulders, she figured she could help him out of that. That night in the alleyway told her that he was a boy in need of help. There was no way she could fix him but she could at the very least be a friend to him and dig him out of the alleyway once again.
Within time, she had dried off and ran a brush through her hair. A knock on the door caught her attention and she flung it open to find Joey standing there in a little white shirt and fitted black jeans. His jet black flyaway curls glistened under the ambient sunlight of the hallway and his sun kissed skin looked so soft and smooth. His black Chuck Taylors fitted his feet like a new pair of gloves. Meanwhile, the marker ink had stayed intact on his dark skin even after a couple of days and after he had cleaned up for her.
She noticed a flat silvery metallic band on his right wrist: something she hadn't seen before with him.
“What, no flowers?” She was taken aback.
“Was I supposed to get ya flowers?” he asked her, slightly hurt.
She hesitated for a second, and then she realized what she had done.
“Can I ask you a question?” she started.
“Yeah, sure,” Joey raised his dark eyebrows at her.
“Is this your first date?”
He stopped with his eyebrows still raised up into his bangs. She gazed into those dark irises.
“You really wanna know?”
“Please.”
He nibbled on his bottom lip.
“Is this a date?” he asked her.
“It's a date if you want it to be one,” she pointed out. “It can be a play date.”
“Nah, it's a play date if you and I are jammin' together.” He hesitated. “Do you—”
“Do I what?” She turned her head a bit to make sure her purse was within her arm's length on the hook.
“Play an instrument at all?” he finished with a bit of reluctance.
“I don't. I probably should, though.”
“Yes, you totally should.” His face lit up at that. She showed him a smile and then she reached to her right for her purse.
“Shall we?” she started.
“Yeah, let's,” he said as he lifted his elbow up for her to link up. She slung the purse over her shoulder and she closed the door in one fell swoop. The two of them made their way outside to the bright sunlight and the fresh aroma of springtime. Joey reached into his jeans pocket for his mirrored sunglasses: with one hand, he put it on over his dark eyes and his straight Roman nose. The lenses shone in the bright yellow light; Sam squinted her eyes once they reached the sidewalk.
“There's a little park over here,” Joey told her with a point up the block. “Like, around the corner. We can hang out and take a walk around the place.”
“Is there a lake or something there?” she asked him as she shielded her eyes from the midday sun with her free hand.
“I don't think so,” he confessed. “I didn't see one. I also saw a hockey rink not too far from here.”
“You wanna show me a little round of hockey, don't ya?” she teased him.
“If ya don't mind,” he replied with a little shrug of his shoulders and a lopsided little smile.
“Can we walk?”
“We can,” he said, and he ran his fingers through the fine, minute ringlets on the side of his head.
Joey linked up his right elbow with her left and they strolled together down the sidewalk to the corner. Sam peered past him to the narrow side street and she spotted the narrow strip of grass which he called the park.
“That's more like a dog park,” she declared.
“Yeah, now that I look at it—I imagine a bunch'a little dogs running around there now that I really look at it.” He lifted the sunglasses from his face for a moment; once they crossed the pavement, he brought them back down. She spotted the hockey rink in question, a long low dark building set back from the blacktop.
“I should've brought my skates with me,” he confessed over the noise of the street. “But then again, I don't think either of us can go onto the ice without one of us asking.”
“You could always say you're a hockey player,” she suggested as they looked both ways before they crossed the street.
“Yeah, but I'd need to do a little more than just say it, though,” he pointed out. Stray, damp black curls flew out from the back of his head as he led her across the first two lanes of the street. He paused at the center divider to let her catch up to him.
“You sure can run fast,” she remarked with a bit of a pant.
“That's part of the trade,” he replied with that lopsided grin back on his face. “Here—” He extended his hand for her and he guided her across the other two lanes to the sidewalk and ultimately, the hockey rink. Joey's black curls sprawled over his shoulders once they were in repose so as to catch their breath.
“For a skinny little guy, you sure are strong and full of stamina,” she said as she adjusted the strap of her purse.
“As I said, it's part of the trade. The strength of the whole thing will make you help the others find it for themselves. C'mon...” He led her to the hockey rink, which had been closed for the springtime, but he was willing to look in through the front window at the dark front room. She joined in next to him: through the cold shadows, she could make out the sight of a low bench and a series of lockers on the side of the wall.
“God, this takes me back,” he said in a low voice. “It seems like a lifetime ago since I would sit on a bench like that and lace up and put on my knee pads and my jersey.”
He turned to her with a serious expression on his face.
“Do ya think maybe you'd be up for a game of hockey at some point in the future?” he suggested. “I can show you how to do it if you don't know anything.”
“It'll be a while, though, Joey,” she pointed out.
“Oh, yeah, for sure,” he nodded at her with haste. “But I wanna show you the world that came before I turned into Joe the singing drummer—or Joe the drumming singer, whichever suits best. And I'll see if I can find a pair of skates for ya. And now that we bring it up, I kinda wanna show you something...” His voice trailed off and he turned his head. Without hesitating, he ducked over to a white plastic pipe laying on the grass. She stood there before the window and watched him.
“I was a goalie for a long time,” he called out; he held the end of the pipe with two hands, and he held it down by his slim waist. He spread his legs so it looked as though he was about to brandish a sword. “I did act as offense and defense a few times in the past, but I was mostly a goalie.”
“Did you have those big pads on your knees?” she asked him with a gesture down to her own knees.
“Oh, yeah—they stuck onto my knees and went all the way down to my ankles. I had these big oven mitts for gloves to protect my hands. You don't really think of the goalies taking a lotta shit, but we do. Well, I did, anyway. I got hit in the head and in the stomach a lot. Anyways, I'm holdin' this pipe like this 'cause you never wanna raise the hockey stick any higher than this. Any higher and you hit the guy next to you right in the face and you get sent to the box, too. You don't wanna be in the box.”
“Do I have to spread my feet like that, too?” she asked him.
“Nah. I'm only doin' it out of habit. When I'm on the ice, I wanna steady myself so I have a good shot for my teammates. C'mere—” Sam sauntered over to him and he handed her the pipe. She held it by the opposite end with both hands herself.
“And when you're swingin' it, like you're hittin' the puck with it, you wanna put the hand you write with closer to the head. Which hand do you write with?”
“My right.”
“Okay, so, here—” She moved her right hand down the pipe right as Joey stood right behind her. “Just like that, yeah! Well, not that far—” She moved her hand up towards her. “—yeah, that's better. And now put that end down to the ground—” She did just that and her purse slid off of her back, but she didn't mind. “It's a lot easier if we're movin' around and we're on the ice, like it just becomes natural to you.”
Sam stood back upright and held the pipe as if it was a baton.
“I was going to say, I can see this being real hard on your back.”
Joey shook his head a bit.
“It is kinda, like at first it was for me. But you get stronger with each time and on top of that, like I said, we're usually moving around at a real pace so you don't really think about it too much when you're playing a round with your team or you're hanging out with a bunch of friends.” He ran his fingers through the ringlets on the side of his head yet again.
“Wanna take a walk?” he suggested.
“Yeah. I haven't really seen much of this neighborhood since I moved here. I've either been hanging out with all of you guys or concerned with school and my own things.”
“Or it's been snowin',” he added.
“Or it's been snowing, right!”
“I'd put that pipe back on the ground, too—I saw something crawl out of it.”
Without even thinking for a split second, Sam tossed the pipe off to the side and they made their way down the sun bathed block. That time, they didn't link arms, but Joey walked side by side with her. All of the buildings were made of faded pale brick, but the whole neighborhood of the Bronx was in stark contrast to the rest of the city with all the little shops and the apartment complexes that lined the street.
“Maybe at some point, I can take ya a little bit upstate,” he said at one point.
“We can go now if you'd like,” she suggested, “you know, if you're not doing anything else today.”
“You wanna?” He showed her a grin.
“Yeah, let's do it! I only saw the one part of it when we went to go get you.”
“Alright—let's get on back and I'll drive you up to Poughkeepsie. It's one of my favorite places to play a gig at. It's a little bit of a drive, but I think we do it, though.”
It took them a little bit to return to Sam's block and to climb inside of Joey's beat up car. The same car that broke down in the months before out in the middle of the harsh New York winter. The same car he almost froze inside of.
“You still haven't gotten a new car?” she asked, stunned, as she rested her purse upon her lap and rolled down the window.
“There hasn't been any money,” he admitted with a solemn look on his face. He slipped the key into the ignition. “Trust me when I say this, though—the second there is a bit o' money, the first thing I'm getting is a new car.” It fired up without any roughness, but once they made their onto the parkway outside of the Bronx, Sam could feel the car was nearing its final miles: the way in which it seemed to struggle with staying in a straight line on the hard black pavement and also with staying up to speed with the rest of the traffic.
“I don't know if we'll be able to even get there,” he confessed at one point. She peered out the window at the sight of one of those green road signs, and its decreeing that Poughkeepsie was eighty miles away.
“You were able to drive down this way with no problems, though, didn't you?”
“Not at all. So this—this kinda worries me a li'l bit, if I'm honest.”
“What do you think we should do?” she asked him.
“Well—let's see. Keep an eye on those payphones out there. If we break down either out this way or on the way back, we're gonna haveta hit up either Frankie or Aurora or somebody to come and get us on one of those. I'll do the same if it breaks down and you're not with me.”
They drove up the wide four lane parkway for a few miles when the whole car began to gyrate and shake while in motion. Sam caught the smell of something burning.
“Shit,” he blurted out. “Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit—shit!”
“What the hell is that? What's wrong with it?”
“It's overheating.” Joey shuffled his feet underneath his seat. Sam clutched at her purse. He drove towards the far right lane and the guard rail. He hit the brake pedal and the car screeched to a stop. The second they were at a halt, hot steam emerged from underneath the hood. The steam was then followed by a short flame out the front grill.
“Oh, my god, this car is dying, Sam!” He hit the edge of the steering wheel with both hands and bowed his head in frustration. “This fucking piece of shit!”
Sam climbed out of the front seat with her purse in hand and she made her way towards a tree on the side of the road to be away from the burning car. Joey followed suit right behind her. They stood together several feet away and watched the whole front of the car catch on fire.
“I'm sorry, Sam—I didn't mean for you to see that part of me,” he sputtered; Sam looked into his face to see tears in his eyes.
“Joey, you did what you could. That car was going to die anyway.”
“It was, yeah.” His upper lip trembled and she moved in closer to him. Sirens down the parkway caught her ear.
“Joey—I don't want to fix you. I want to be a friend to you. You're a sweet boy. You are. You are!”
“But I'm fucked up, though.”
“You're not! You're not fucked up, Joey. You like to party and have fun, and sometimes things like a burning car happen. But it's not your fault, Joey. I promise you. None of it is your fault.” She threw her arms around his slender body and she held him close. She leaned the side of her head against his chest so she could watch the back end of the car ignite into big hot yellow flames. They stood a ways away from it to keep away from the smoke, and the black column rose in the other direction from them, but she could feel the heat from the inferno.
“Thankfully I took my blanket out of the back,” he tearfully said. “That thing belonged to my grandma.”
“And thankfully, we're out of there,” she pointed out; she peered up at him and she brushed a tear away from his face.
“What the hell am I gonna say to my dad now?” he asked, and his brown eyes grew wide with concern.
“Tell him the truth,” she advised. “That's all I can tell you. Just tell him what happened.”
“I don't wanna lie to him after all,” he said with a sniffle and a shrug of his slender shoulders.
Within time, a fire truck and an ambulance showed up. But at that point, the car had burned down to the axles and Sam had already hunted down the payphone to give Aurora a call.
“They're taking us down to the station to check on us,” she told her. “Okay—call Marla and Charlie and tell them what happened. I'll give you a ring when we get there.”
Neither of them had inhaled any of the smoke given they stood so far from it and the column billowed in the opposite direction, but Sam could hardly shake the image of those bright flames from her mind as she and Joey rode in the back of the ambulance back to the Bronx.
“Why do I always get into deep shit when we're together?” he pointed out to her as they neared the familiar neighborhood. “Like it almost feels like karma is working against me whenever you and I hang out.”
“Why would karma work against you?” she asked him.
“I puked my guts out twice, the hockey rink was closed, and now my car caught on fire. It's almost like the universe is telling me we shouldn't hang out together.”
“I drew your face, though,” she pointed out. “It's in my journal—the same journal I handed in to get myself into school.”
“Oh, shit. I don't wanna jinx it then.”
“You won't jinx it,” she insisted.
“But that's my fear, though.”
They reached the driveway of the hospital, where a pair of nurses checked on them to ensure they didn't inhale that acrid smoke or received a bad burn of some sort. Sam recognized Marla's orange hair in the afternoon sun at the far end of the driveway.
Charlie reached them first with his arms wide open and he was quick to embrace them both.
“God, I'm so glad you guys are okay,” he murmured into Sam's ear.
“It was so scary,” she told him as Marla pushed him out of the way to embrace her.
“What were you guys even doing?” Charlie asked them.
“I was gonna take her up to Poughkeepsie for the day,” Joey explained, “we got a few miles out of town and the damn thing started overheating. It started shaking like a boiler, and then I pulled over and that was when the radiator went out and it caught fire. She got out of there so fast. Like she saw the steam rising and she just bolted. Right, and I'm the fast runner.” That coaxed that lopsided grin out of him, and a slight chuckle out of her.
“So what happens now?” Marla asked him.
“Bunk with me?” Sam suggested. “My couch is so comfy.”
“You're gonna make him sleep on the couch?” Charlie cracked.
“Where else is he gonna sleep at? On a hook?”
The two men burst out laughing at that.
“Yeah, I don't see why not,” Joey replied with a shrug. “I need to call my parents and tell them what happened, too.”

Given he had no means of returning home and fetching a fresh change of clothes for himself, Joey stayed in the same shirt and jeans for the next couple of days before Frank offered to take him home on Saturday night. But he lay on her couch with his sock feet and he greeted her every morning with that crooked smile plastered on his face. He always asked her how she slept the night before, and he always offered to help her out whenever he could.
On Thursday night, right before they turned in for the night, she realized that she was correct about him. Joey just needed someone to talk to in the whole grand scheme of things, being the boy from upstate New York and the guy thrust into the music scene from the hockey world. He only drank as much as he did because he needed a means of escape. He took it out on himself because of that old stone face that stared back at her through the darkness as she switched off the light.
The next morning, Sam was jarred awake to the sound of the phone ringing in the kitchen. He caught it first given he lay there on the couch partially awake.
“Yeah,” he was saying in a broken voice; she stepped into the room right as he turned to face her. He showed her a smile. “Yeah, yeah, she's right here.”
And without changing his expression for a second, he handed her the phone. “I won't jump to conclusions but I think you're in business,” he told her with a twinkle in his eye.
Sam gasped and she brought the receiver to her right ear.
“Hello?”
“Is this Sam Shelley?” a man asked her.
“It is.”
“I'm Bill Gaunt—the man from admissions you gave the journal to about a week ago.”
“Oh, yeah, yeah. I remember you well.” She couldn't resist the excited smile on her face.
“Well, all I have to say is we love your art so much that we need to meet you and we need you here with us.”
“Seriously?” She brought a hand to her chest. Joey leaned in closer to her with his eyebrows raised high up into his bangs.
“Seriously, seriously. If you can come down some time today or Monday—the sooner the better—we'll figure out a grant for you. Welcome aboard!”
“Oh, thank you so much! I'll be there soon.” She hung up and she turned to an excited Joey.
“I'm in!” she declared. “I'm an art student!”
“Oh fuck yeah!” He threw his arms around her and she leaned her head against his chest. “Oh, my god, Frankie and Charlie are gonna freak when they hear about this.”
“Make a pot of coffee,” she told him as she stepped towards the kitchen doorway. “I'm gonna tell Frankie about it.”
“Is he even up?”
“I don't care if he isn't,” she quipped, “this is a time of celebration!” That brought a laugh out of him, and she ran out of the apartment in her pajama bottoms and her camisole; down past Emile's place and down the hall. She pounded on the door panel with both hands, and Frank greeted her with bleary eyes.
“Sam? The hell's going on?”
“I got into art school!” And his face lit up.
“Holy shit! See? I told you you'd get in!” He threw his arms around her. “Oh, god, that just made my life!” His chest shuddered a bit from the feeling. She pulled back to look into his face and he wiped away some happy tears.
“Oh, fuck—fuck, man.” He then rubbed his hands together. “I've gotta call Charlie and Marla and tell them—they're gonna be thrilled.”
“I'm gonna call my parents,” she told him. “I owe them absolutely everything.”
Frank returned to his apartment still with tears in his eyes and she ducked past Emile's apartment right as he poked his head out to the hallway. “What's all the commotion, Miss Shelley?” he asked her.
“I got into school, Emile! I'm gonna have some money coming in!”
“Excellent!” He showed her a thumbs up.
Sam hurried up the stairs to call up her parents and to have a cup of coffee with Joey. Every step up felt lighter and swifter. It was like a dead weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She was finally a part of New York City, and she was going to let everyone know it.
Indeed, when she and Joey made her way down to Manhattan together so she could do it that day, and he didn't want her to go alone, she had a desire to tell everyone on the subway about it. She had to stop herself given she knew what Charlie had told her about living in the city. Joey huddled close to her on the other side of the support pole but he never touched her. He only showed her a big, excited smile and the twinkle in his eye.
“How exciting!” she decreed as she clutched the strap of her purse.
“Got a hand in Anthrax's world and now you're about to embark into art school,” he said with a nod of his head; the smile never left his face as they arrived in Manhattan and they surfaced from the subway to the bright sunshine outside.
“I'm just dyin' of thirst right now,” he confessed to her over the noise of the street. “I'm gonna grab a glass of lemonade. Would you like one?”
“Yes, please!”
Joey made his way down the block to one of the cafes on the side of the street. Right across the street, she spotted a tall man with a big floppy hat atop his head. She recognized him even from a distance. She hurried towards him right as he reached the street and turned in the opposite direction.
“Cliff!” she shouted over the noise of the street.
He never moved, even as she reached the corner of the side street.
“Cliff!” she called out again, and that time, he wheeled around to look at her: that black brim cast a soft shadow over his handsome face, and thus she could see into his eyes as they crinkled up at the corners with his big greeting grin.
“Hey!” he answered in a big bold voice; he set his hand on top of his hat. She peered both ways on the street, and then she darted across the pavement to meet up with him. He never dropped the grin from his handsome face as she came within earshot. She put her arms around his long torso and he returned the favor.
“What the hell, I thought you guys were in Denmark all this week?” she asked him as part of her greeting.
“Yeah, we were but we came back early, though,” he explained.
“How is it there?”
“Beautiful. It's springtime so the darkness and the daylight is perfect at the moment before it falls out of wack again.”
“Joey told me that you guys went there for the perfect sound of your new record,” she said as he led her away from the crowded street.
“Yeah, we were told—it was like a warehouse, this big empty space in the heart of Denmark—it was cold enough for Lars' drums and for the three of us to work harder. So what'cha doin'? I was just gonna go into his little book shop here.” She turned her head for a look at the cozy shop nestled in between a restaurant and a tattoo parlor.
“I got into art school!” she declared with spirit.
“Oh, that's so cool! I'm sure Lars'll like the sound of that.”
“Joey's across the street getting lemonade, but—I don't really wanna stand there on the street, though.” Without hesitating, Cliff held the creaky wooden door for her and she stepped inside of the cozy shop first. Right before her stood a low wooden table covered in books and faded papers: beyond that was a series of bookshelves, and to the right stood a short staircase. Cliff stepped around her and took off his hat to reveal the crown of fine brown hair atop his head. The black stripe was missing that time, to which she frowned at the sight of it.
He gazed on at her with a puzzled look on his face.
“What's the matter?” he asked her.
“For a second, I swore you had a black stripe in your hair,” she confessed.
“I don't,” he promised her, and he showed her a lopsided little grin. “But I can see how it'd confuse ya, though. My hair likes to change color depending on the lighting. One time, I went out with a girl who thought I had some white hairs on the side of my head.” Indeed, he gave his hair a toss back with a flick of his head and it looked as though his hair was comprised of a myriad of different colors. But she spotted a black stripe and a white stripe on the side of his head. It might have been part of the lighting after all, because the colors disappeared and returned to plain brown.
“You are a man of many colors,” she remarked with a grin upon her face. He set his hat down on the edge of the table and he picked up a book from the table in front of him: a blue paperback about the size of his hand from the base of his palm to the tip of his middle finger.
“What book is that?” she asked him.
“Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse—guess it's about Buddha? It's got a picture of Buddha on the cover.”
“Oh, yeah!” she squeaked with a wave of her finger. “I remember reading that when I was in high school.”
Cliff opened up to a random page near the back.
“'I have always believed,'” he read aloud, “'and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value.'” He glanced up at her with his eyebrows raised and his eyes big.
“I remember it well,” she said in a low voice.
“Sam?” Joey's voice floated in through the door behind her.
“Oh, there he is!” She opened the door for him, but he stood there on the sidewalk with glasses of lemonade in either hand. “How'd you know I was here?”
“Saw you walk in,” he explained, and he lifted his gaze into the shop. “Hey, Cliff!”
And Cliff nodded at him and showed him a smile. Sam took the cup in Joey's right hand.
“I gotta go,” she confessed to him, and he nodded at her, still with his eyes big and his face warm and soft. Before she followed Joey out to the street, and with the glass in hand, she stepped closer to Cliff.
“Call me when you get home,” she told him in a low voice.
“That is if you call me first,” he vowed to her with a wink.
