__________
When the curtains call the time
Will we both go home alive?
It wasn't hard to realize
Love's the death of peace of mind
The Train.
That's where your parents met a few years before you were born and that's where your grandparents met as well as their parents before that.
The tales of those encounters enriched your childhood and your fragile dreams. Oh, to be grown and travel on the Train as well, meeting your soulmate and falling so madly in love that you'd become consumed by it.
You’ve always desired it. You’ve always longed for it.
The teachers would get shiny eyes and beaming smiles on May 1st. You remembered the first time it happened. The air felt different and the town felt more alive than usual.
"Today is a special day for all of us," your parents also smiled at the breakfast table. They looked almost shy and they exchanged gazes they would usually let themselves have in a more private moment.
You were in your first year of elementary school but from what you could understand, that day sounded like a big deal for the adults and it started to be a big deal for you as well.
"This is the day when people go on a Journey to find their soulmate," the teacher repeated what you've already heard at home.
The Train, the children would whisper, the giddiness in their voices making you almost escape your skin with excitement.
"Can we go and see it?" you asked with your heart in your throat from the emotion. You really wanted to see all the young adults go to the Train Station and embark.
The teacher smiled as if that was the most common question asked. "Unfortunately, it's a very private moment. But when you're ready, you will finally see the Train and you will find the love of your life during the Journey."
You were an only child so besides your parents' tale of how starstruck they both felt upon seeing each other on the Train, you had no other immediate example of how the experience would go.
"My brother Johnny said the place they ended up in is way more gorgeous than our town," one of your classmates and your best friend said one time. "But not as gorgeous as his partner, he said,” making a throwing-up motion with his fingers.
A choir of grossed out children made you giggle at the time and you joined them, but deep inside you knew that it was indeed possible to meet a person more gorgeous than the most gorgeous place on earth.
You wanted that. You desperately wanted that.
Your parents also said their towns of origin weren't as beautiful as the one you were living in and although you could objectively see it was decently cute and cozy you were sure they felt that way because of the rosy love glasses.
"Why do I have to leave this place when I find my soulmate?" you wondered one time as you were growing older and having more and more thoughts about the Journey.
Your mom patted your head. "When you find the love of your life the Train stops and lets you both off. The couple has to live in the place they ended up in."
"What if I want to come home?" you argued.
"Your partner will be your home," your dad explained with a fond smile. "We will see each other often the way you see all of your grandparents. Don't worry about missing us."
"Also it is too soon for you to think so deeply about it," your mom chuckled, pulling at your cheek.
Yet, there you were years later, your only suitcase in your hand, which you bought for the occasion, and your best dress on, standing in the Train Station and feeling like the too soon came, well, too soon.
Your mom helped you put on some makeup as well that day and you had to admit you were feeling pretty cute.
But oh so anxious.
You couldn’t believe you were about to initiate the Journey on the Train. Thoughts of how your soulmate looked like adorned your mind since you could remember but in the latest months you found yourself fantasizing about them more and more.
But with the pretty thoughts, some thoughts of doom would send rocks to your mind as well feeding your anxiety even further.
The mixed emotions made you uneasy.
"What if there's no soulmate for me?" you looked yourself in the mirror as your mom finished her last touches on your hair.
"Nonsense," she reassured you.
"But has it happened before?" you insisted.
She sighed. "Yes but it's very rare. What happens, in that case, is that you need to come back home and you need to go on the Journey the following year."
"And are there people who went on for many years and they met no one?"
"Not as far as I know. Everyone met someone sooner or later. Your grandma met your grandpa after 3 years."
You exhaled. Maybe you'd just go on a little train ride and come home before sunset.
Maybe you'll also need 3 years.
Maybe no one would fall in love with you ever.
You expected the Station to be full of people but it was completely empty.
"Don't worry about it. The Station doesn't let you see your friends until you're all on."
You bit your lower lip and waited. There was no moon on the sky and the stars were very visible.
You looked up and let the night sky calm you down and when you looked back in front of you, the Train was there.
"Heavens," you swallowed the little surprising gasp and looked to your right then left feeling your breath accelerate. You didn’t hear it arrive.
What were you supposed to do now? Was it supposed to feel this ominous?
But then one door opened with a slow hiss, engulfing you with the freshest flowery scent.
The most gorgeous man you've ever seen in your life descended and tilted his hat lifting one gloved hand to guide you inside.
"Welcome aboard, Miss."
His hair was black and a bit longer in the back. Your father would have said it looked a bit messy; he’d probably offer some gel and suggested him to comb it backwards. But the man wore it so well that you found yourself thinking how it would feel like to pass your hand through it and mess it up even further.
“Thank you,” you replied quietly. Then you cleared your throat and tried again.
The man’s face was a polite mask, not one muscle of his perfect face twitching or moving. On the contrary, you felt your face in flames as you walked near him to enter the wagon.
“Please, choose the coach you’re most attracted to,” you heard his voice behind you. The fresh flowery perfume followed you both and you realized it was his scent. Taking a few steps forward you found yourself shaking ever so slightly.
“Who are you?” you turned around before having a chance to look down the dark but cosily illuminated wooden corridor of the train.
His chest was so close that you could see the little silvery tag on it. Conductor.
Then you took a step back not realizing how close he was.
“I apologize for not having introduced myself earlier. I am the Conductor, Miss,” he simply replied. “I’ll be around the Train if you need me. Also, if you ring the bell you’ll find in every wagon."
His eyes were a dark shade of marine blue, you realized, like the ocean during a storm, when you can’t distinguish between the water and the sky.
Your grandpa told you many tales of his life at sea. He used to say it was the most beautiful and terrifying thing, and at the time you didn’t understand how something scary could be beautiful, but that man’s eyes made a shiver go down your spine yet you didn’t want him to stop looking at you.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I'll leave you to get comfortable,” he tilted his hat again, making a shadow appear over his eyes, as if reading your mind and seeing your fascination with them.
You gave him a little bow as well, as your mother has been teaching you it was polite to do when meeting gentlemen, then you stared at the way he turned around and took the opposite direction in the tight corridor. His shoulders almost touched the walls when he walked and his legs looked extremely long in his black uniform.
The coach you chose was the first on your left, a luxurious dark brown space, with deep bordeaux seats which you realized were softer than any other material you’ve ever felt before. You placed your suitcase on the designated space and sat down, looking at the windows showing your town’s Train Station, then you inhaled and exhaled looking down at your dress and rubbing your lace-gloved hands together.
What were you supposed to do?
Would your soulmate come barging in your coach?
Would you meet over breakfast in the morning?
Why were you all supposed to go at exactly 1:05am?
You suppressed a yawn wondering where you were expected to sleep, then with the corner of your eye you noticed the curtains slowly close and you gasped feeling the train depart at the same time.
Your older cousins liked to joke about ghosts roaming around the Train but you thought you were grown already to believe such things. Yet, the movement felt uncanny and you were so on edge that you haven’t realized you were squished against one of the seats’ corners until a ding made you scream.
On the little table a small card boarded with gold appeared out of thin air.
“Dear Miss, you are invited for Breakfast in the Dining Car. Please turn the card around for the Train map. My warmest regards, the Conductor”
You touched the paper with your fingertip as if it were a poisonous snake and the ink smudged a bit as if it has been freshly written.
Breakfast? At 1am? Maybe he meant tomorrow morning?
You turned the card around as instructed and the display for the train was illustrated. A little “you are here” red mark told you that your wagon was the one in the middle of the train.
You wondered how did the Conductor know you chose that specific coach when he left you just a few minutes prior and didn’t even check back.
The Dining car was towards the head of the train, the direction in which the Conductor walked, and the name Steam Locomotive adorned the first car. You wondered if he was in there or if his coach was one of the wagons close by.
The train was moving swiftly so it wasn’t bothering you as you thought it would. The closed curtains made you sad that you couldn’t see the scenery so you got up and extended your hand towards them, trying to perhaps see the machinery through which they were able to close on their own.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” a voice made you jump in place.
“Mark!” you turned around and walked the few steps towards the door to hug a very dumbfounded young man.
“Hey, hey, you okay?” he awkwardly stood there even after you retrieved your arms from his neck and stared him up and down.
“I was so scared to be alone. It’s good to see your face,” you explained.
Johnny’s younger brother has been your best friend and the one you spoke about the Train Journey the most growing up. You were still ashamed to remember the way you cried for the whole night the time Mark told you his brother hasn’t come home from the Journey because he has found his soulmate. You had a very intense childhood crush on him.
“I get it,” he smiled then his eyes went down to eye your dress, then up, noticing your prettily arranged hair and makeup.
Then he sighed, almost disappointed.
Without realizing you touched your cheek. Did he think you were ugly?
“What?” you blinked at him.
Mark shook his head. “I just-,” he started then interrupted himself, a bright dust of red moving in towards his cheeks and ears. “I thought that maybe you could be- you know-sometimes it happens that even friends-”
You blinked at him then you felt your own face on fire. “Oh,” you realized what he wanted to say. The scarf you tied around your neck made it difficult for you to breathe.
“Well,” he scratched the back of his head. “I guess we’re not soulmates. That, of course, if you didn’t feel anything in particular either.”
“I felt relief,” you said.
Mark nodded, agreeing with you. “I was also just glad to see a friend.”
Was he disappointed you weren’t his soulmate? Or was he happy it wasn’t you?
“Same.”
The following silence made him clear his voice once then his eyes fell on the card in your hands.
“Oh, I got one too. I was wondering if it was a prank inviting me over for breakfast. I was going towards the Dining Car to at least check it out.”
“Right? I thought I was the one misunderstanding the invite,” you chuckled. “I’ll come with you now if you don't mind.”
Mark took a few steps back to let you exit the coach and his eyes fell on the window again. “My parents said that if you open the curtains when the train is moving you’ll be forced to descend in the first place you see. Alone. Without the possibility to return on the Train ever again.”
A shiver ran down your body at his words.
“There’s also a warning,” he indicated with his chin.
You followed the direction and noticed the golden plate near the curtains.
You could have sworn it wasn’t there before.
_________
The corridor was gorgeously decorated with fresh flowers and paintings. You and Mark took your time to peek into most of the coaches too, giggling a bit when you noticed some of their residents weren’t alone.
“How long do you think it takes for people to meet everyone on the train?” Mark asked, impressed that some were already coupled.
You thought about it. “The train stops in every town, doesn’t it? There's so many people. I feel like even a few weeks."
Mark winced. “That’s a long time. My parents met within 15 minutes of boarding. They had neighbouring coaches.”
“My parents met after a few days,” you recalled. “My maternal grandparents met after three years of trying.”
Your friend hummed. “That’s hard. I’d be losing hope.”
You swallowed the dry lump. “That’s a bit scary, yes.”
You didn’t want to tell him that you were afraid you might end up just like them.
The Entertainment wagons were about five, and you both held your breaths when entering the first as it was roaming with people. The strangers’ faces turned towards you both with inquisitive eyes, as if checking if one of you were their soulmate.
You bit your lower lip taking a few steps inside.
“What exactly do you think we need to feel when meeting the one?” you whispered as some people sighed and turned around, sign you weren’t interesting.
“No clue. But it has to be something,” Mark answered. “Maybe a sharp feeling. Awe. Even fear?”
“Fear? Why would I be afraid if I meet my soulmate?” you both walked slowly, staring at the board games people were playing.
Mark hummed. “Not actual fear. More so like the fear you get right before sliding down with a sleigh. It’s scary but you know it will feel very nice.”
The example made you chuckle and it broke some of the tension you were feeling. Then his words actually arrived to your brain.
Like the fear before sliding down with a sleigh…
…or the fear when you see a sea storm.
You shook your head and exited the coach to enter the rest.
_________
“I can’t believe there’s actual breakfast,” Mark repeated for the third time already, cheeks full with eggs and bacon.
You giggled, impressed by your own appetite so late at night. Or early in the morning?
“The train has different time zones than your town of origin,” a voice explained.
The scent came first and it froze you in place, the piece of banana you were about to devour still in mid-air.
Mark lifted his gaze to the side and greeted the voice.
“I hope everything is to your liking,” the Conductor added. When you put the banana down on your plate and looked up, he was already looking at you. His stormy eyes were slightly squeezed in an attempt to look polite. His uniform looked impeccable as usual and with his hands clasped behind his back his chest popped underneath it.
You forced yourself to look away.
“Yes, thank you. The train is gorgeous,” you said.
The Conductor smiled a bit more. “And I hope this is a congratulatory meal?” he asked, looking at Mark for a moment as well, who furrowed his eyebrows.
“Oh,” you shook your hands, realizing what he meant. “No no, it’s not like that.”
“We’re just friends,” Mark butt in, a bit scandalized.
You nodded fervently. “Classmates. From the same town.”
“Yes. Our coaches are close-by and we just found each other.”
The Conductor listened to one then the other, looking at both of you intermittently with his everlasting smile. “Well, then. I’m glad you enjoy each other’s company. I wish for you to find your soulmate when the time comes as well.”
You and Mark both thanked him and watched the Conductor bow enough for his eyes to get the same shadow you saw the first time you met him.
But he lifted his gaze to look at you this time. Slowly, letting his long lashes fan on his cheeks for a moment.
The pupils were very deep and you imagined yourself drowning in the almost black blue of his irises.
You couldn’t bring yourself to turn around and look at his back as he walked away to greet other passengers.
You couldn’t even bring yourself to reach and grab the fork because your hands were tightly clasped together on your lap to hide how badly they were shaking.
_________
On your way back Mark got welcomed by his male friend group in the third Entertainment wagon. Some of them had new faces around and from their shy gazes, you assumed they met their partners already. Some were alone and in the mood to party.
Mark invited you to stay but you decided to go back to your coach and have some rest.
You wished to be able to party like Mark did. In the end, for him that was also a well deserved holiday after spending most of his days helping his father with the lands. Many thought the same and not everyone wanted to go on the Journey to meet an actual soulmate. For a lot of people it was a nice break from studying or work and that was it.
But you felt uneasy to be that free-spirited, and you needed time alone to understand what was going on. After all, you’ve been day dreaming about the Journey and the Train your whole life. And now that the desired moment arrived there was something off about it all.
And you couldn’t point it out.
You’ve never felt more relieved to enter your coach and see a fluffy small bed in one of the seats’ places. You sat on it and you also found it very comfortable. How it got there you had no idea and by that time you decided to stop asking yourself questions on how that Train actually worked.
The spring dress you chose for yourself was easy to slip into but quite hard to undo, you realized, grunting a few times as you tried to untie the light corset. When you managed to open it you exhaled deeply and you let it fall to your feet.
Then your eyes darted towards the warning sign near the window as you slowly got under the covers.
Curiosity killed the cat but you really wanted to know what was behind those curtains and why you weren’t allowed to know.
Before you could realize that you didn’t brush your teeth or wash your face, the train stopped and you opened your eyes in the silence.
“Thank you for traveling with us. I wish you happiness,” the Conductor’s voice was muffled outside your window and you remembered your coach was the first near the main train entrance.
Did someone already get off as a couple? Or was that someone who looked outside and was now forced to live alone?
You walked slowly and stealthy and you were about to turn the corner to where the entrance you came in was when the voices stopped you in place.
They were many, perhaps six different ones, thanking the Conductor and chatting away, making already plans for the future. Imagining you in their place gave you anxiety - after all they all met a few hours ago and already thought of getting married - but you were also glad they were all soulmate couples and not any forsaken person who went against the rules.
Somehow, you also felt a but envious that it has been that quick and smooth for them.
The Conductor’s back was towards you and you looked at his long fingers behind his back as he greeted the people away. His white gloves covered them and for some reason you wondered how they looked like naked. His waist was visibly smaller than his shoulders and the spine line descended so beautifully that you felt the urge to draw him, although you were no artist.
You shook your head trying to get rid of thouse thoughts and realized that in the meantime the chatter died down as the passengers walked towards the Station.
The Conductor was still outside, probably seeing them away for good before departing, and his scent was slowly engulfing you the more you remained in his presence.
You swallowed. How could a man smell that good?
Then you realized you had a full-on view of the Station so you squatted down behind the corner and tried to make sense of what was outside. That was your only chance, you figured.
“You know that’s forbidden, right?” the man’s smooth voice made you jolt.
The Conductor was still standing stoically without looking back and you let your gaze fall around as to understand who he was addressing, because he definitely couldn’t have seen you.
“Yes. I’m talking to you, Miss,” he turned around enough for you to see his relaxed expression.
You could see only half of his face and the only visible eyebrow was lifted in a way that made his gaze look- well, sexy, you realized with a certain degree of embarrassment.
You got up and took a step forwards. “Well, I am not looking out through a window, so it is not technically forbidden. There’s not a sign near the entrance telling me I can't do this.”
The Conductor turned around fully. His lazy gaze rested on your face then slowly went down your body and stopped on your nude feet. His eyebrow lifted even more. You wigled your toes in embarrassment.
“I forgot to bring shoes,” you mumbled, your burst of confidence suddenly dying down.
“And a dressing gown,” he added, his pupils darting back down to your chest and hips in the almost sheer underdress you were wearing to sleep. “And some common sense,” he added, locking eyes with you.
You crossed your arms on your chest to prevent him from looking any further. Then you lifted your chin in disdain at his last phrase.
“That’s not very polite of you. Gentlemen avert their eyes.”
“Tell me, Miss. What prevents me from grabbing you and making you descend here in this town with the excuse of you not following the rules?”
You gulped. “Common sense, of course. Why would you even do that?”
“Why not? Maybe I forgot to bring it with me the way you did coming here.”
You let your arms fall down in anger. “That would be very inappropriate and illegal!”
“Says who?” he smirked. “There’s no warning near the door saying I can’t do that.”
You bit your lower lip. “I get it. I should not be here. But you can’t push me out of the train. That would be barbaric.”
The Conductor stepped back inside in one fluid movement. “Usually passengers rest in their coaches or entertain themselves with the others in an attempt to find their soulmate. They don’t go wandering about.”
You dropped your gaze to his chest as he was getting way too close for your liking.
And when he unbuttoned his jacket, slowly, and let it slide off his shoulders and fall on yours instead, you visibly shuddered.
It was warm and big, and it smelled like him. Like that overwhelming flowery perfume.
You felt dizzy.
“I was just curious,” you whispered, feeling like a little child being scolded. But the Conductor’s expression was warm when you dared to look at his face again.
His lips were full and plump and you felt a tight lump in your throat seeing them move.
“Go back to sleep, Miss.”
His deep voice rang in your head the whole time you washed your face and brushed your teeth, feeling it incredibly warm. You let his jacket fall on the seat in front of your bed but as you slid under the covers you wore it again, and nuzzled you face into the material.
_________
In the morning, or what you felt was morning, you wore another dress you packed, a deep blue one you instinctively chose with little black flowers around the crown of it.
Some people were walking against you in the corridor and you could audibly hear them stop their breathing as you locked eyes.
They were wondering if you were their soulmate.
Yesterday you would have walked slowly and looked around shyly as well, but today all you wanted to do was to bring the Conductor his jacket back and all of those people were just in your way.
You were about to start pushing against people’s shoulders when Mark’s head pocked out of a coach and his ruffled hair made you realized he just woke up.
Not in his bed.
“Mark Lee!” you stopped in place.
“Fuck,” he blinked at you. “You out of all people. I mean, so nice to see you-”
“Did you find your soul-”
Mark exited the coach quickly and closed the door behind him. “Shh,” he was about to place one hand on your mouth but then looked at it and put it behind his back instead.
“Let’s not- do not say anything.”
You blinked at him. “Are you telling me that-”
“Maybe,” he interrupted you again. “Listen, people here are gorgeous. There’s no need to save myself for marriage or anything.”
Your jaw fell. “Mark Lee, did you just sleep with some random woman?”
He scratched one eyebrow. “Did I offend your sensibility?”
“You’re just some man, aren’t you?” you looked him up and down. “Whatever. Have fun,” you rolled your eyes and started to walk again. “And wash that hand, would you?”
“How do you even know-”
“I wasn’t born yesterday,” you turned around to quickly let your tongue out at him.
“Is that the Conductor’s jacket?” he asked before you could exit the car.
“No? I just found it around,” you answered quickly, leaving him behind with his questions.
The Conductor said you had no common sense but you had enough common sense to know that being seen around with his jacket would somehow be a mistake. He was the one who didn’t have the common sense to know to not send you to bed with it.
Lost in your thoughts you didn’t realize how far up the train you arrived and when the cars started to be empty safe for storage items you stopped in place to catch your breath.
It was very silent up there, the only sound coming from the rails outside and the steam locomotive.
You were close. And you had no idea why you knew that.
The walk towards the locomotive was slow and the spaces less fancy. Some coaches were on your right and you wondered if perhaps the Conductor was in one of them.
Or maybe you were stupid and he was way back in the train, doing his job.
When you felt like that damned train didn’t even have an end, in front of you a big dark door with a skull on it indicating some type of danger opened and the swish of fresh flowers made you close your eyes for a moment.
The Conductor’s head was tilted to the side as if amused.
“I see that this time you’re decently dressed,” he said, the his gaze fell on your chest. “Almost.”
You gulped and put on a brave expression. “I came to give you this back. Thank you.”
The man looked at the jacket you were holding and reached towards it slowly. His fingertips touched your knuckles for a brief moment and it made you so tense that you felt your head pulsating.
“You could have rung the bell. There was no need to come all the way up here.”
You let the air come out your nostrils. “You always scold me. You should be thankful I brought this back to you.”
“I am scolding you because you keep taking the most convoluted decisions instead of the straight forward ones.”
The informal conversation and the lack of Miss from his part made you nervous so you tried to look around his shoulder to see if any staff, or worse, the train driver could hear it.
Although you found his tone aggravating you didn’t want him to lose his job or anything.
“So you didn’t make me come because you were curious to see the Locomotive instead,” the Conductor added, seeing you snoop your nose around.
You straightened your back. “I was just trying to see if someone was listening to your inappropriate comments towards a passenger and a lady.”
The Conductor smiled and took a step to the side. “No one is here.”
For a second you forgot about him, the curiosity of how that Train actually worked exciting you more. “Who drives this then?” you stepped in and looked around the small space.
“No one,” the man explained and his breath caressed the back of your neck. When you looked behind your shoulder you realized he was staring at the goosebumps on your exposed skin.
“Why is there a chair here, then?” you cleared your throat and walked around it.
The Conductor wore his jacket and put his hands on the back of the big chair. “I like to sit here and look outside.”
You lifted your gaze towards the small window in front of you. You hadn’t even realized you could see outside.
“Do you want to try and sit down?” he asked.
You bit your lower lip. “Would that be alright?”
“I thought you didn’t care for rules,” he smirked.
You lifted your chin and sat down. It wasn’t much, just the railroad in front of you and some trees on each side. But it was peaceful and your curiosity got fully fed.
Now you wondered when it was the time to be killed like a cat.
“Why are you really here, Miss?”
The Conductor’s voice was so close to your ear that your spine curved. But you didn’t move away.
“Don’t-” you gulped. “Don’t flatter yourself or anything. I came here because I was curious and I had to give your jacket back.”
His index finger touched one of your hairs near the ear and you jolted in place, moving your head away. The man was smiling. He was holding a small feather that was probably stuck there.
“I hope you’re satisfied at all times, Miss,” he replied. “And I am here to make sure all of your future needs are fulfilled as well.”
That tone and those polite words were meant to be professional yet your mind went to Mark’s ruffled hair and half naked body. You imagined the Conductor’s dark hair on your pillow and his scent engulfing you all as his touch made your spine curve. And his hand, would he also use his hands on you like Mark did with his woman?
You shook the thoughts out of your head and got up quickly, feeling it hard to breathe in that narrow space.
“Thank you. I will leave now,” you voice was wavering and if he noticed it he didn’t say anything about it.
“I hope you have a pleasant journey,” he wished as you exited the car.
He didn’t mention anything about finding a soulmate this time.
__________
Your scent lingered on Haechan’s body the whole day.
It was in his hair, his nostrils, his skin, around his neck and his hands. He wondered if you slept with his jacket the whole night and the thought of your naked body pressed against the material of it made him almost knock heads with a passenger.
“Good day to you, Sir,” he tilted his hat last minute.
The young man barely noticed him, as his eyes were directed towards another person in the corner of the car.
Haechan was very acustomed to that gaze. He saw it every day for the past few years - the look of someone madly in love at first sight.
That was how your eyes looked like the first instant he saw you on the platform waiting for the Train.
Waiting for him.
He wondered how that gaze looked on his face but he was sure you didn’t notice it.
He wasn’t even sure it was there in the first place.
His instincts got the best of him and he worked on autopilot. Polite face, good smile, distance.
Hell, he even took the sign away from your windows for five minutes. But then you almost opened the damn curtains - as he intended for you to - and he realized he couldn’t physically let you go.
It was probably a mistake, he thought the first seconds of seeing you. He took the job of the Conductor because his old grandpa couldn’t work anymore. Haechan lived on that train since he could remember. It was always him and his old grandpa, in the middle of the swarm of people looking for soulmates. It made him sick to death to see all that love around him.
I wish you didn’t hate your parents for falling in love, Haechan, his grandpa used to say.
But it would have been different if they fell in love with each other.
But they didn’t.
The boy has been told the tale of his family of Conductors many times. It was a curse, they said. No one in his family had soulmates and they were tasked with assisting the Train instead.
How did you and grandma decide to be together then? small Haechan asked at the time.
Sometimes you just choose who to spend your life with. This is how your parents met as well. Your father came on this train often and never met his soulmate. Your mother understood he might be a good husband choice so she approached him and that’s how they got together.
But then dad met another woman on the train and left my mom.
The grandpa sighed deeply. He just met his soulmate. He didn’t do anything wrong.
Haechan as a child couldn’t know what to say to that.
He knew something was not right but he didn’t have the vocabulary to argue back.
But as a teenager he finally understood.
He abandoned my mom, your daughter, and he abandoned me. Don’t speak about that man ever again.
Haechan’s grandpa would only sigh and pat his shoulder. You’re growing into a fine young man. I am proud of you. And I am sorry that happened. When you’ll meet your person you’ll understand their choices.
I will never understand it because I don’t have a soulmate. And I surely as hell won’t marry a woman that might meet her rightful soulmate years later and leave me.
Your grandma never left me, he used to remind him. And I wish for you to have children. Who’s going to assist this Train otherwise?
To hell with this fucking Train, Haechan would explode and run away.
He didn’t hate the Train.
It was his home.
So when he’d calm down, sitting on the outside metal stairs and looking at the scenery no one besides him and grandpa were allowed to see, he’d realize he didn’t hate his parents either.
His mom remarried and left the Train after dad left.
Haechan wasn’t sure if she was actually in love although from her letters she seemed happy, but the memories of her time closed off in a coach on the verge of death were still haunting him. Haechan stopped reading his father’s letters altogether and started to burn them in the Locomotive.
A young woman approached him and Haechan shook off the memories and the convoluted thoughts about you from his head.
“How may I help you, Miss?” he placed his hands behind his back with the best custom service expression plastered on his face.
The woman seemed embarrassed.
“If you need anything, please, don’t hesitate to ask me,” he tried to reassure her.
She inhaled and took a step forward. Haechan leaned down to hear her better. “Well, you know how you said the coaches makes appear everything that you want? I was-, well, I met a man and- I know he’s not my soulmate but it’s not against the rules and we’re doing fine together for now and we were well, we were wondering how to make- how not to-”
“Get pregnant?” Haechan simply asked and the woman’s pale face turned purple from embarrassment.
She surely didn’t expect him to be that straightforward. “Usually if you really don’t want that to happen, it doesn't,” Haechan continued. “If you’ve encountered difficulties then maybe you or your partner have-,” he interrupted himself. “-a breeding kink?”
The young woman placed her palms to her cheeks and gave him a little bow. “I understand. I think I need to go now, Sir. Thank you, Sir.”
“You just have to-” Haechan tried again but the woman already ran away.
“I see I’m not the only one you’re being not so professional with,” a voice made him turn around.
__________
You were on your way for lunch. Or dinner? You lost track of time. You’ve been on that Train for less than 24 hours yet you felt like a lifetime already passed. To think you had to stay there until meeting your soulmate made you almost throw up.
“I thought you were very excited to meet your soulmate,” Mark commented that morning, eyes closed under the fake sun in the fake seaside car.
You sighed.
“I am.”
You were.
Or you thought you were. But somehow you lost interest. You imagined yourself inside the Train for so long that the moment you actually got on it it all lost meaning.
And how was it possible that none of the men looked interesting enough to even have a mere conversation? The only ones approaching you were trying to get under your dress and you soon realized that romance was not the way you imagined it to be.
“You don’t sound like excited. It’s as if you can’t wait to get off of here,” he opened one eye then turned to his side to see you better. “If you haven’t met the one yet, then what about enjoying it to the fullest until you can? It’s a place with free food and entertainment.”
You gave him the side eye. “I do not intend to sleep around with random men. I’m a lady.”
Mark rolled his eyes. “I’m also a gentleman and going down on people doesn’t make me less gentle.”
You almost spat your water. The Train somehow made everyone change or it opened your innocent eyes because you had no idea your childhood friend had that side of him.
“Did you really not find anyone who’s kinda attractive? You don’t even have to know his name,” he insisted.
Actually, there was a man whose name you didn’t know who you found very attractive. That was probably the worst part of that experience. Was it normal to be attracted to the Conductor like that?
You shook your head. “Nonsense. I will wait for my soulmate. And no, no one around is attractive enough.”
Mark exhaled and went back to his previous position. “I just don’t like seeing you sad.”
“I’m not sad.”
“Then angry.”
“I’m not angry.”
“You’re angry now.”
“Because you’re pissing me off,” you sat up. “I’m going to eat.”
You were already too confused for your liking. You didn’t need Mark Lee to investigate further.
The desire to have a soulmate was still there deep inside, the longiness and the need, yet for some reason you also felt numb to everything around you.
Still feeling like Mark rubbed you the wrong way you almost missed the figures of the Conductor leaning down to whisper in a young gorgeous’ woman’s ear in the middle of the Library wagon.
The woman seemed scandalized and so red that she looked like a tomato. The Conductor’s face was unfazed but a bit confused as she ran away.
“I see I’m not the only one you’re being not so professional with,” you couldn’t help but say.
The car was empty safe for the two of you and when he turned around you smelled his ever present scent.
It drove you insane. What kind of damn cologne was that man wearing?
“What do you go flirting with passengers for?” you crossed your arms on your chest. Maybe Mark was right and you were actually angry but seeing the Conductor’s face just added to the whole irritation, especially catching him flirting with your shy women.
The Conductor tilted his head to the side as if genuinely surprised but also intrigued at your reaction.
“What if someone else besides me saw you? What would happen to your position and reputation?” you went on.
The man took his time to open his mouth and talk. “I don’t understand if you’re mad at me or if you’re worried for me.”
You lifted your chin. “Maybe both.”
“It takes a good amount of care for both. Do you care about me?”
He took a few steps towards you and the closeness made his voice quieter.
You didn’t let him intimidate you with his charm.
“I was raised a lady of good principles and seeing the Conductor of a Train meant to help people find their soulmates flirt with its passengers is not appropriate and I have to speak on it.”
The Conductor’s smile widened. “And lurking at the time of descent in a skimpy night gown and nude feet is appropriate?”
His dark blue eyes were more stormy than usual and the moles on his face reminded you of the nightsky above you as you were waiting for the Train.
“Coming all the way to my coach with a dizzying cleavage is appropriate?”
His voice was so deep and close that you had to avert your gaze to catch your breath.
“Shaking like this in my presence and being unable to look me in the face is appropriate?” he whispered so close to your lips that you inhaled and took a few steps back.
“You’re also here to find a soulmate, Miss. Concentrate on doing that and leave other people’s business to themselves,” he added in his usual calm voice and walking around you he left you breathless and alone in the middle of the Library.
________
Haechan reached for his tie to undo the knot and he realized his fingers were slightly shaking.
Your scent made him more on edge than usual and the fact he could still smell you on his jacket made him unreasonable mad.
And your face and expression, your hurt eyes seeng him talk to that woman, as if you were jealous, was driving him insane.
What were you thinking roaming around him like that? With your delicate blue dress and your cleavage moving up and down in that damn corset with every quick breath your took?
He should have let you move the curtains and never see you again.
Haechan walked the distance from the entrance door of the car to the Bar and without caring about anyone he walked behind it and poured himself a shot of whiskey.
“Hard day?” a voice made him sigh deeply before turning around.
He forced himself to smile. “I am not in service right now,” he lied to excuse his drinking on the job.
The young man waved his hand. “No one would care anyway. They’re either on a date or uhh fucking.”
“Would you like one?” Haechan indicated the bottle, ignoring the man’s choice of words.
The other nodded. “I’m Jeno.”
He expected Haechan’s name in return but the Conductor never tells his name to passengers. “I hope you’re enjoying your stay,” Haechan said instead, pushing a glass towards Jeno.
The latter took it and winced after downing it. “I’m not here for that. I’m actually a journalist.”
Haechan fought the urge to roll his eyes. There was one of two of them every year trying to gather some kind of hidden information about the Train. Haechan also thought there were some secrets about it growing up but it was a pretty straight forward thing. Just a Train in which you can meet your soulmate. Nothing more.
Well, that until he met you and your scent got under his skin.
“Is there something specific you’re writing about?” Haechan politely asked.
“Is it true that soulmates understand they’re soulmates because of each other’s scent?” he asked, and a writing pad materialized in front of him.
Haechan eyed his pen ready to take notes then his face. “You should ask the passengers. I am not someone who has a soulmate.”
“So it’s true that the Conductor has no soulmate.”
“Yes. It’s not a secret.”
Jeno nodded, not writing anything as if that wasn’t the information he was actually seeking out of him.
“My parents said there’s no such thing as scent. They’re also divorced,” he said.
Haechan sighed. Another young man hurt by that Train and his parents. “Sometimes people come here and go home together even if they’re not sure they’re actual soulmates. Maybe your parents mistook their union for a soulmate bond but it was just infatuation.”
“Shouldn’t this place guarantee a soulmate union?” Jeno asked. He looked very angry and Haechan could understand why. “What’s the purpose of this Train then? Let people choose each other on land at this point.”
“It’s called free choice. The Train knows who’s an actual soulmate pair and usually it doesn’t stop for couples who are not actually bonded. This is why the train is not stopping now for all the people who are- uh, fucking.” Haechan was too exhausted to choose a more gentlemanly term for that.
Jeno didn’t seem to care. “Then why did it stop for my parents?”
“They probably insisted for it to stop. The Train doesn’t go against the free choice.”
Jeno poured another shot, gave it to Haechan and took a deep gulp straight from the bottle.
“Nice chat, Conductor. Can I ask to leave now?”
Haechan kept quiet for a moment. “You should stay until you meet someone or until the Journey comes to an end. If you leave now you will not be allowed to come back.”
“There’s no such thing,” Jeno whispered and got up, walking towards the windows. With one quick hand he moved the curtains away. The Train stopped slowly on its tracks and Haechan sighed.
“Please follow me. I’ll escort you to the exit for going against the rules."
__________
Is it true that soulmates understand they’re soulmates because of each other’s scent?
That phrase has been haunting you for the following hours.
You were rolling in bed from the moment you decided to try and sleep after pacing your coach for a while.
You didn’t mean to eavesdrop.
You didn’t even mean to follow the Conductor but his pace was urgent and the curiosity still hasn’t killed you, especially after that heated conversation you had in the Library.
Shaking in his presence and being unable to look him in the face? He could see that? What was going on and why were you feeling like committing the biggest crime you could think of?
No, why was the Conductor with his deep eyes and his pillowy lips and his smooth voice the only thing you could think of when you were on that dam Train to find your soulmate?
The Conductor walked towards the Bar and you remained back in the smaller corridor, watching his throat gulp that brown liquid like it was water. Why did he look so upset? Was it you? Or was it his missed opportunity with that lady that you interrupted?
You felt stupid spying him like that and you were about to turn around and walk away when the voice of a second man made you stop in your tracks.
I’m actually a journalist, the man said and you wondered what the Conductor would say back. Would he accept to give the journalist information?
Is it true that soulmates understand they’re soulmates because of each other’s scent? You felt your blood turn to ice. What did he mean by that? Scents? Your parents didn’t tell you anything about that.
But then the following exchange of information made you feel even worse.
You should ask the passengers. I am not someone who has a soulmate.
So it’s true that the Conductor has no soulmate.
Yes. It’s not a secret.
Mark looked like a baby chick with his hair ruffled around his face. But you could tell it was from simple sleeping and not messing around with someone’s daughter’s insides.
You pushed him back into his coach after he opened the door and you sat down.
“Wow, when I told you to look around and decide who to fuck I didn’t think that someone would be-”
You interrupted him. “Mark, tell me everything you know about the Train, soulmates, and-” you stopped for a second, “the Conductor.”
Mark blinked hard as if unable to keep his eyes open and laid back in his bed. “It’s the middle of the night.”
“Actually I’ve been trying to keep track of the time and it should be middle of the afternoon.”
“Well, everything here is fucked and for me it’s middle of the night. Why are you so curious all of a sudden?”
You sighed and relaxed in the dark red velvety couch. “Have you ever heard of people feeling their soulmate’s scent more that other people’s?”
Mark hummed, one hand to scratch his forehead. “Yes. Johnny talked about it but at the time I thought it was something stupid people in love notice about each other. He said his partner smelled like patchouli and warm spices.”
You lifted your legs up to warm them under your night gown. “And your parents?”
“Dad said mom smells like lavender and mom said dad smells like woody herbal amber or something like that,” he chuckled, shaking his head.
He then opened his eyes and got up to sit, mirroring you. “Why? Did you meet someone whose scent is intense for you?”
You wondered if telling him the truth. “No, I just-” you played with a loose string along the hem of your gown, “I overheard a man talking about his parents never mentioning any scent and they’re divorced now.”
Mark leaned forwards. “Are you worried that your parents are not real soulmates since they also never mentioned scents?”
Actually that didn’t even cross your head but you realized that might be a possibility. You didn’t want your parents to divorce or anything.
“Oh, come on. I’m sure that’s not the case at all,” Mark came to sit beside you and wrapped your shoulders with his arms. You weren’t there because of your parents but Mark felt warm and comfortable to lean on so you didn’t correct him.
“What about the Conductor?” he then asked and you hoped he couldn’t feel the way you tensioned in his hold. “What did you want to know?”
You gulped and sat straight, letting Mark’s arms fall to your waist instead. “I’ve heard he doesn't have a soulmate.”
Mark nodded. “I’ve heard that too. Honestly I thought he would be some kind of very ancient man. At least, my parents said he’s very old, but maybe this is a new one.”
You kept quiet, biting your lower lip.
“What is it that you’re not telling me?” Mark whispered.
You lifted your gaze and his big sparkly eyes gave you the courage to open your mouth.
“If the Conductor has no soulmate, and soulmates feel each other’s scent, then why do I feel the Conductor’s scent everywhere I go?”
________
After Mark collected his jaw from the floor and you kept him up brainstorming the whole night, you met both early in the morning over breakfast to further discuss the possibility of you and the Conductor being soulmates.
“Not to put you down or anything,” he repeated, “but I’ve never heard of anyone bonding with the Conductor.”
You sighed staring down your coffee with no desire to drink it but knowing it would wake you up.
“I know, Mark, this is why I’m so dumbfounded.”
“I mean, also the original Conductor was a mummy of an old man. Maybe that’s why no one bonded with him. Maybe he was married already and that's how the rumour of him not having a soulmate started.”
You had a sip of the bitter liquid and winced. You were glad Mark was playing devil’s advocate with himself because you had no more force to discuss all the different points of view.
“I don’t even think it matters. He warned me multiple times to leave him alone and find a soulmate. How would being soulmates with him even work? Where would the Train stop? Would I be forced to stay here? Being the Conductress? Forever?” you felt like descending into madness.
“Listen, calm down. I think the solution is to check it myself first. We find him, I smell him. If it’s just his high quality cologne then you can put your mind at ease.”
You didn’t want to ask what would happen if he couldn’t smell anything but maybe your desperate eyes told him your feelings because he sighed.
“And if I don’t smell anything, I try to rizz him up and I’ll be like dang you look like you know your cologne. Can you show me your collection? And I go to his coach and I smell all of the bottles and if it’s any of them we know it’s just his perfume and not his actual scent.”
You opened your mouth.
“And-” he interrupted lifting one finger, “if it’s none of them then we will come back here and brainstorm together. He’s an attractive man. Maybe you’re just sexually attracted to him. I bet that if you tried and fucked-”
“I will not fuck the Conductor,” you said, perhaps too loudly. You both looked around.
You lowered your voice. “I don’t know what’s going on but having that kind of relation with him doesn’t sound like a good idea.”
Mark leaned back in his chair. “Okay then. I’ll start by going on with my plan then we’ll see.”
You exhaled and nodded once. “That sounds like such a stupid plan.”
Mark’s smile widened. “At least something fun is happening in this stupid Train besides drinking and sleeping around.”
________
Haechan finished his morning routine walk across all wagons and sighed looking at his pocket watch. Soon everyone would be done with breakfast and would go about their business. He had to go and assist in the enternatinment wagons in some time as well.
Then he felt a pair of eyes on his back and lifted one eyebrow.
“What can I do for you, sir?” he turned around to see your little friend fake confidence leaning on a wall.
If Haechan didn’t know better he’d think the young man was trying to flirt.
“Oh, hello there Conductor. Or maybe I should say-” Mark stopped his phrase as if waiting for Haechan to say his name.
“Conductor is fine,” he smiled, joining his gloved hands together in front of him.
“Right right. I will not push any boundaries. I was just wondering, like from a gentleman to another gentleman, if you can aid me choosing a cologne.”
Whatever Haechan expected that man to say it wasn’t that.
He had to suppress a laugh.
“A cologne, sir?”
Mark walked around him casually. “I mean, I am here to meet a soulmate and I thought damn what if I don’t smell good? That’s my biggest fear actually, you know?” he put his hand on the chest to convey how intensely he felt about not smelling good.
“When you’ll meet your soulmate, sir, they will think you smell like their favourite scent, so no need to worry.”
Mark stopped in his tracks and his stupid fake expression fell. “You said soulmates smell like their favourite scents just now?”
Haechan exhaled. “That’s what I said, sir.” He really hated repeating himself.
Mark kept looking at him so Haechan was about to excuse himself and bid the weird man farewell but then the awareness of his behaviour washed over him like a cold wave and he stopped in place.
Haechan lifted his gaze and met Mark’s intense black eyes.
“Are you not curious why I am asking you about scents, Mister Conductor?” his voice suddenly became lower.
“I am not a curious man, sir,” Haechan straightened his tie with the intention of leaving. He didn’t like where all of that was going.
But Mark took a step to the side, blocking his way.
“So what’s your favourite scent?”
Haechan fought the urge to grab the dude and physically move him away. “I like clean and fresh scents, sir.”
“And what does Y/N smell like?”
Haechan put his tongue in the cheek and flared his nostrils. “I wouldn’t know.”
_________
Mark thought about keeping this all a secret from you. Being soulmates with the Conductor of the Soulmates Train didn’t sound like a great time. It was like falling in love with Death when it comes to kill you. But he wasn’t going to be a bad friend.
He told you to wait in the Seaside wagon in hopes you could relax hearing the sea waves, but when he entered he found you fidgeting instead.
“How did it go?” you walked up to him but he exhaled and dragged you towards the lounge chairs.
He didn’t know what you wanted to hear, if confirmation that the Conductor was your soulmate, or if you wanted nothing to do with him.
“First of all, he doesn’t smell like anything to me,” Mark said. “He just has a normal clean person scent. Like any other person.”
You swallowed and inhaled shakily, letting the information sink in.
“Second of all, he said soulmates smell like each other’s favourite scents.”
You opened your mouth but nothing came out of it.
“What does he smell like to you, Y/N? Is it flowers?”
Mark knew you’ve always loved that scent. The sweet but fresh perfume of flowers with their infinite colours.
He didn’t need you to answer, he saw it in your pupils. You watched Mark close his eyes for a moment and exhale then open them again.
“It’s not all,” he said. “He behaved weirdly when I mentioned you. I have a hunch that he can sense your scent as well.”
________
I think you should talk about it together, Mark suggested, but you couldn’t just do that, could you? He was the Conductor after all. Such thing was impossible.
Also, for how much you loved Mark, risking such improper behaviour only because of a hunch was too much for you.
You thought you were afraid of not finding a soulmate. Growing up that has been your everlasting fear; yet your brain has never even taken into consideration the perspective of finding your soulmate in a man you could not have.
For how much you’ve been wanting to see him, bump into him, or exchange a few stupid words to each other in the past days, your felt the same equal amount of desire to avoid him at all costs.
You thought you wanted Mark to come back and tell you that it was just the Conductor’s overbearing cologne. You wanted him to say he smelt it too and that is confirmation that he couldn’t possibly be your soulmate.
Yet when he fed your idea that the Conductor might be your man the relief was so intense that you almost cried.
It drove you insane.
The following days you haven’t seen the Conductor once. Perhaps the encounter with Mark made him uncomfortable and he decided to avoid you as well. What if he though you were some kind of creep? He did warn you to leave him alone and concentrate on finding a soulmate instead. Was it possible to have a one sided soulmate?
Somehow you felt like that situation was all your fault. Maybe that was the death moment of the curiousity saying, because you kinda felt like dying slowly if you thought about any other man. Maybe if you didn’t go to see the descending moment, maybe if you didn’t sleep with his jacket, maybe if you didn’t go and find him in the Locomotive, maybe if you didn’t confront him in the Library, you wouldn’t feel like that.
Maybe maybe maybe.
“I know this is not good friend advice, but you could get your mind off of him by, you know, using someone else,” Mark shrugged, peeling an apple with a knife.
You sighed, pulling your summer hat lower on your eyes. The seaside car soon became you and Mark’s favourite. “You know what? Maybe you’re right.”
“You finally gave in my temptation?” he wigled his eyebrows.
“Yes. You’re the little devil sitting on my shoulder.”
Mark cut a piece of apple and ate it off the knife. “I can introduce you to some fine gentlemen.”
You snorted. “I saw the gentlemen you have around Mark Lee.”
“And? Are they not fine?”
“You can have them.”
Mark rolled his eyes. “Do you want to have fun or not?”
“I do. But I’m not sure if fucking random men is what I consider peak of amusement,” you replied. Mark didn’t say anything so you kept going. “Although, I noticed that the light brow hair man is not bad. I think his name is Jaehyun. He has nice hands and a great smile. I do enjoy a good dimple.”
You expected Mark to laugh at you but he remained quiet safe for a little nudge he gave you. You sighed. “The other J name man is not bad either. He’s tall and he looks gentle like a puppy.”
“Uhm,” Mark said and nudged you again.
“What? You said I should sleep with one of them,” you slid away the hat to give him a venomous side eye when your mouth dropped open.
Mark was looking at you with a little tight smile and in front of you, almost covering the artificial sun of the wagon, was standing the Conductor.
“I apologize, Miss. I didn’t want to interrupt your- uh lovely monologue,” he tilted his stupid hat.
You sat up feeling your body on fire. Then you looked at Mark who gave you a small apologetic smile.
Your mouth was dry and you had no idea what was the appropriate thing to say to someone who overheard you talk about fornication.
His scent should have told you he was there, but maybe you got so used to it that you were feeling it everywhere, messing with your perceptions.
“Good day, sir,” you stupidly said.
“I was just making sure you’re enjoying your stay,” the Conductor looked at you first, then Mark. “From your conversation I assume everything is fine.” His eyes looked black in the shadow and the little line between his eyebrow looked like a crack in his otherwise perfect face.
You gulped and bit your lower lip.
“Just a precaution. I told this the lady that stopped me in the Library the other day also, if you remember. As a contraceptive, please make sure to strongly desire to not get pregnant, so the Train can take care of you.”
________
The fact that useless friend of yours ambushed him like that told Haechan that you probably felt his scent everywhere as well.
And you must have spoken about it in such a way that made Mark investigate.
It made Haechan’s fingers tingle and they’d tingle ever more when he’d slid them underneath his covers at night, and fuck his fist to the image of you until he had to push his face into the pillow to muffle his groans.
Everything was a mess and for the first time in his life Haechan didn’t know what to do.
The letter he wrote his grandpa asking for advice was still unsent, looking at him from his desk.
He wasn’t sure he wanted to expose himself like that to his family. His grandpa would be nothing but supportive.
I knew you’d find a partner. See, now you understand it. It makes sense how your parents felt, doesn’t it?
Because no. Haechan didn’t understand it and his parents’ behaviour still didn’t make sense to him. Also, he hated to hear others say I told you so.
But also, his family never mentioned the possibility of a full-on soulmate. They said someone random. Someone that couldn’t find anyone else. Someone who would accept Haechan as a second choice.
He rolled in bed, the stickiness of his desire still coating his hand. Then he huffed and got up to wash.
His desire. It was such a foreign feeling to him to leave him breathless.
Yet it felt so familiar that he felt like he could finally breathe deeply. It felt like things were finally right, like he was finally home.
That morning he didn’t follow with his duties thoroughly as usual. The Train stopped twice and he looked behind his shoulder to check whether you were there, in your skimpy underdress and nude feet.
But you weren’t.
He tried to ignore you for the past few days and apparently you were doing the same.
Yet, he could feel your scent in the whole Train, as if you’ve just left the wagon he entered.
He wondered if you felt him everywhere as well.
In the afternoon, he couldn’t take it anymore so he followed the trail. He would just give you a short look, something to further fuel his autodestructive night fantasies.
You were in the Seaside car, as usual, your dress ridden up your thighs on that chaise longue and Haechan wondered how could Mark concentrate on cutting that apple without cutting his finger when you looked like that besides him.
“I know this is not good friend advice, but you could get your mind off of him by, you know, using someone else,” Mark shrugged.
Haechan stopped in place. He wasn’t eavesdropping. You were talking loudly enough for everyone to hear. But he didn’t want you to sense him.
You wanted to get your mind off of whom? Haechan?
“You know what? Maybe you’re right,” you replied and Haechan tightened his fist in his white glove. The image of you sleeping with someone else suddenly appeared in front of Haechan’s irises made the seaside car look like the north pole instead.
“You finally gave in my temptation?” that useless fellow asked and Haechan has never wanted to have a fist fight with a passenger more.
Of course, he wondered already if Mark was your soulmate and you both dumb idiots didn’t notice.
Maybe that’s why Mark even inquired about scents in the first place.
But why was Haechan sensing your scent if you were taken and why did the Train not stop for you two if that was the case?
Could the Conductors curse be that cruel? Making Haechan fall in love with a woman he could not have?
“I can introduce you to some fine gentlemen,” Mark said and Haechan didn’t know if he should feel relieved Mark wasn’t offering himself for your entertainment or be jealous at the idea of someone else touching you.
He decided to intervene.
“I do. But I’m not sure if fucking random men is what I consider peak of amusement,” you replied right when Mark lifted his gaze and a piece of apple fell from his mouth on the fine sand at his feet.
Haechan gave him a venomous look and opened his mouth to interrupt your scandalous monologue.
But you went on. “Although, I noticed that the light brow hair man is not bad. I think his name is Jaehyun. He has nice hands and a great smile. I do enjoy a good dimple.”
Haechan felt his jaw muscles twitch. “The other J name man is not bad either. He’s tall and he looks gentle like a puppy,” you continued.
Mark had the decency to look scared.
“I apologize, Miss. I didn’t want to interrupt your lovely monologue,” Haechan finally said as you finally realized what was going on.
He came there like a thirsty man to have a single drop of water and you were thinking of sleeping with other men instead.
Haechan felt like stopping the Train and descending himself.
Your eyes were glossy when you looked up at him, maybe from the sun but also from the embarrassment.
Haechan felt like making you feel even worse.
________
Your gaze followed the Conductor’s spine as he exited the wagon and you let a single pained whine as you burrowed your face into your palms.
“Mark Lee.”
The poor Mark got up and away from you as if he could sense you might take your frustration out on him.
“It’s not my fault.”
You let your hands fall in your lap. “Now he thinks I’m a whore.”
“I don’t think that changes anything. You don’t need his opinion or approval.”
You got up with another whine. “He ignored me for days and now that he approached me again he overheard me talk about who of your friends I might fuck.”
Mark finished his apple. “Hey. Wasn’t that your intention? Getting rid of him? Forgetting him?”
You exhaled.
Yes, but why did it feel so bad?
_______
They all eyed you the following night - the first ball party of the season, the little card said.
This time the ink didn’t smudge when it appeared on your nightstand out of thin air and it didn’t look like it was written by hand.
One detail made you bite your lower lip. Wear masks, the card said.
The car that was hosting it was huge and you realized it must have been some sort of optical illusion to make the space feel so big. The center was empty and you assumed it was for dancing. Most people were standing near the refreshment tables or near the walls and the exciting but nervous air made your skin shiver. Everyone from the train was there and you realized it was the perfect moment to meet a soulmate.
With uncertain feet in your high heels you reached towards the drinks but the glasses didn’t move from the tray.
“You need to say what you want and the glass unglues itself,” the Conductor said and his long fingers appeared in front of you. They wrapped the leg of a glass. “Champagne,” he said and the glass remained in his hand.
You didn’t dare to look at him. “I didn’t know Conductors were allowed to drink,” you tried, remembering the time he felt the need to have that wiskey shot in the bar.
“How do you know I am the Conductor?” he asked. His voice was low but light and amused.
You turned around quickly to see a black mask, leaving nothing but an anonymous jawline and a pair of lips. His hair was covered by a silver crown and in his elegant suit no one could have noticed who he was.
But you did.
You cursed at yourself.
The Conductor leaned closer. “Is it because of my scent?” he whispered.
You gulped and looked away towards the drinks tray.
“So you admit it,” you murmured, wondering if someone was looking at you.
“Admit what?” he asked.
The crowd of people cheered and you assumed a new couple formed.
The intermission helped you cool your head.
“I don’t know the names of all the drinks,” you changed subject.
The Conductor didn’t seem surprised. “Which one do you want?”
“I don’t know. The least dangerous looking one.”
“Bubbles,” he ordered and then gave you the glass full of sparkly liquid. It smelled fruity.
“Thank you,” you said.
“Do you always go for the least dangerous looking thing?” he turned around and looked towards the hall.
Some brave couples started to dance and you enjoyed the way the ladies gowns flowed under the golden lights.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?” he smiled once before taking a sip of his drink.
“Yes,” you took a sip of your bubbles as well. They buzzed on your tongue.
“So you didn’t avoid me because you were afraid of me the past few days.”
It wasn’t a question.
“You knew where to find me if you wanted to see one of your passengers. This is your Train.”
The Conductor let his gaze fall on your face. “I did find you. You were talking about very interesting arguments.”
You gimaced, thinking of the Seaside Wagon incident. “It was just talk. I did not-” you started to explain the you realized how stupid it sounded trying to justify your actions, or non-actions, to him.
The Conductor sipped from his drink in silence. You couldn’t read his face normally, and with that mask you really had no idea what he was thinking.
“Are you upset I didn’t contact you all of these days?” he asked instead. "It was my understanding you were trying to forget someone by engaging in those actions and I am self centred enough to think that someone was me."
His honesty left you breathless. You considered lying. Admitting it would have been too humiliating. “No. I understand why you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me.”
“Which is?”
“I look like a crazy woman who claims you’re her soulmate because you smell like flowers,” you blurted out before realizing what you just said.
Your hands in your white lacey gloves started to shake.
The man remained quiet for a moment then he chuckled. “Really? I smell that nice to you?”
You exhaled. “This is not a laughing matter.”
The Conductor analyzed your expression. “I apologize. I didn’t realize how this made you feel.”
His tone gave you the courage to look him in the eyes. Even behind the mask they looked alive, torbid like the dark deep sea.
But looking was a mistake.
“I suppose it’s something common for you,” you inhaled, starting to hate the everlasting flowers perfume surrounding him. “Women with soulmate claims over you, that is,” you explained.
The Conductor looked in front of himself and took another sip. “Yes. I am a charming man afterall.”
You hated him. Was he punishing you? Or did he actually not care about you at all?
“Well, I avoided you because I wanted to say I had no claims. Take this as a compliment on you smelling decently and let’s move on.”
“And what moving on means for you?” he inquired.
“Acting as normal Train Conductor and Passenger,” you took another sip of your bubbles. It started to taste too sour.
“Tonight many couples will make the Train stop,” he announced. “Would you like to see?”
You turned towards him and you locked eyes. “Does that sound like normal Conductor and Passenger behaviour to you?”
The young man laughed at your scolding. “I just know you’re curious.”
“Why would you be kind to me like that? Do you want to push me out of the Train as you’ve expressed your interests towards doing before?”
“I wouldn’t mind getting rid of you actually,” he joked and you could tell he didn’t mean it.
But the tears that secretly collected in your eyes during that conversation were close to falling to your cheeks. You left his side quickly but not before hearing him call out your name.
________
Y/N.
For some reason you thought he didn’t even know the names of every passenger.
Was that normal behaviour? From Miss to nothing to your actual first name.
He pissed you off.
He pissed you off so badly that the tears streaming down your cheeks were tears of anger, you decided.
“Oh heavens. Are you alright, dear?” a young woman stopped in tracks with her man.
“Yes, thank you, Miss,” you bowed a little holding your skirts. You wanted to get out of that car.
No. You wanted to get out of the damn Train.
Was it normal for love to hurt like that? Was all of that even love?
You had no idea afterall.
Everyone said you would just know and everything would fall into place. You’d have the best experience and make the Train stop to settle down with the love of your life. Then why all of those people felt like nothing around you and the only man your heart ached for you couldn’t have?
“Hey hey hey,” Mark stopped you by putting his hands on your shoulders.
You were barely seeing where you were walking.
“What happened?” he asked. “Did you see him?”
Bless Mark and his everknowing third eye.
You gave him a little nod and he pouted his lips, holding you into his arms. “There there. It’s alright. It’s okay.”
The people walking around you gave you some looks as they tried to reach the ball hall but you didn’t care.
“Mark, can you be my soulmate so we can go home and live together in a cottage?” you joked, your voice was muffled against his shoulder and you heard him chuckle.
“Actually-” he trailed off and you let him go, rubbing your eyes and finally eying the person on his side who was patiently waiting for you to calm down.
“I want to introduce you to my-” he added then interrupted himself again, looking at the smiling person with eyes you’ve never saw him have. “-the love of my life,” he finished.
________
Your coach felt like the safest place on earth and your cell at the same time.
After the congratulatory moments and after starting to cry again because you realized how happy you were for your best friend to have found the person he was going to spend his life with, the sad tears came along again as you realized that he was probably going to leave the Train that same evening.
We’ll come visiting often. Afterall I’m leaving my parents and friends behind as well and I want to see them again, he assured you.
You sighed and sat down on your bed.
The reflection the mirror in the corner gave you back made you jolt a bit. You cleaned the running mascara from your cheeks and laid down waiting for the Train to stop, trying to empty your brain.
The Conductor’s voice echoing in your head couldn’t let you fall asleep. Why was he behaving like that? Was he that cruel? Couldn’t he actual see what was going on?
When the Train’s rumbling stopped and you heard the chatter of some couples walking down the corridor you sat back up and opened the coach’s door.
Mark squeezed you in a tight hug then gave you a thumbs up as he passed in front of you with his luggage and, after some other people, you saw the Conductor closing the line.
He stopped in front of your door and opened his mouth as you locked eyes but then he probaby changed his mind because he closed it soon after in a tight line and followed the rest of the people.
You remained quiet behind his back and none of the passengers looked like minding having another spectator, so deeply lost in their partner’s eyes.
“Thank you for traveling with us. I wish you happiness,” the Conductor said, repeating the same phrase you heard him say that first time you witnessed a passengers descent.
Mark lifted his hand to wave and you exhaled, waving back, feeling tears prick your eyes as he turned around and walked towards the Station.
The Conductor remained there for the following moments and you somehow knew he did it for you.
“He’ll do fine,” he said after a moment of quiet.
“I know,” you simply replied.
“Y/N,” he turned around and you inhaled taking a step back.
“Don’t call me by my name. We’re not on those terms.”
The Conductor hesitated but then he took a step inside and the doors closed behind him.
Your gaze was on his shiny shoes so he hunched his back a little to make you look at his face instead.
The cry and the other events calmed you down by now but seeing his face made all of those feelings resurface.
You forced yourself to look at his eyes the way he cleary wanted you to.
“My name is Haechan,” he murmured straightening his back. “Would that make us be on those terms now?”
Your fingers fidgeted at the sound of his name and your lips fought the urge to say it out loud.
“Why?” you asked instead. “Why are you being mean to me?”
“I’m not trying to be mean,” he got closer to you and you took a few steps back again.
“I don’t want to be close to you. I don’t want to talk to you. I don’t want to be on first name terms with you. I wish for you to leave me alone if you don’t want anything to do with me.”
Haechan kept moving forward as you moved back until you hit the wall with your blades. He got as close as to rest his palms near your head on the wooden wall.
And when he leaned in and rubbed your cheek with the tip of his nose you forgot how to breathe.
“You smell like fresh cotton and linen,” he whispered with the most desperate tone you heard a man speak. It was so tender that it clouded your mind. “It engulfed me the same instant I opened the doors that night. You’re not insane, I feel it too.”
He straightened his back and looked you in the eyes. “The soulmate bond,” he added. “This is why you’re irritable when you’re away from me. This is why no one seems interesting to you, why this Journey feels boring. It’s not because you haven’t met the one yet. It’s because you have.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat.
“And? What now?” you didn’t let his sweet words sway you although all you wanted was for him to wrap his arms around you and press those pillowy lips on yours.
“The truth is I am as lost as you are,” he let his arms fall to his sides. “This is not supposed to happen.”
“I figured.”
“I come from the Conductors family,” he started. “Traditionally we do not have soulmates. Our people-” he stopped, as if unsure of how to explain. “-breed by choosing random people they want to be with. Sometimes the couples stay together. Sometimes they don’t if the person who’s not from this family actually meets their rightful soulmate.”
“Do you know of anyone who separated that way?” you asked although from his eyes you could tell that he did.
“My parents.”
You bit your lower lip. “I am sorry,” you wrapped your nudes arms.
“Are you cold?” he asked but you cut him off seeing his hands going to unbutton his outwear.
“Don’t you dare giving me your jacket,” you warned him. “It-” you stopped suddenly very embarrassed. “-was a lot to handle the first time,” you settled for, as drove me insane felt too much.
“I know,” he looked as nervous and for a moment it made you feel better. You also never realized how young he was. He was probably just around your age. “It made me feel a certain well, too,” he added.
You looked behind him and you realized your coach was just around the corner. Haechan let you walk around him and open the door, grabbing a shawl to put around your shoulders.
“Come inside. It’s warmer here,” you let your head peek around the corner.
Haechan felt too big for your coach, you realized, seeing him sitting on the deep dark chairs.
As if knowing to not give you any kind of temptation, there was no bed inside.
You made a mental note to ask Haechan how did the Train knew such stuff.
“I am as unprepared as you are,” he spoke after a while, resuming his discourse.
You knew that conversation was due to happen but it didn’t make you feel less nervous.
“My grandfather never mentioned something like this happen to me. He just assumed I might end up seeing someone with no soulmate. My grandmother was one of them and they haven’t separated. Although now I wonder if she met someone else and actively chose my grandfather instead because of some kind of principle sentiment.”
All of that raw information made your heart ache. You’ve never thought about the Conductor’s family growing up. You’ve never ever heard of people with no soulmate whatsoever.
“Would that be that bad?” you asked in a tiny voice.
His eyes were fiery when he looked at you but you knew he wasn’t mad at you. “Would you enjoy the thought of someone being with you because they feel sorry or because of a promise they made although they’re madly in love with someone else?”
You gulped and looked down at your hands in your lap.
“You think that would be our situation?”
The man didn’t reply. You took it for a yes.
“Or are you afraid I’d leave you after a while? Because you think you’re not my actual soulmate?”
“I don’t know,” he exhaled. “You’d think for a Conductor of the Soulmates Train I’d be more well versed in these heart affairs,” he chuckled bitterly.
He closed his eyes and you felt brave enough to stare at his face. You’ve never had the opportunity to see his features for that long. He was so gorgeous that your heart felt like bleeding and the thought of you meeting someone else that would make you feel more than that that felt inimaginable. The thought of him with some other woman felt even worse.
“If I can’t have you-” you started unable to keep your mouth shut. “I think I’ll just not have anyone else. I can’t even imagine-”
The man smiled and opened his eyes. They were the same deep blue that made you feel like suffocating the first time you saw them. “I am flattered you think this way now.”
“I’m not going to change my mind.”
“I love a challenge.”
He was pissing you off. You told him just that.
His laugh was so pristine that you felt a little smile bloom on your face as well.
“Then what? I’ll just finish this Journey and go home? Then I’ll see you next year? Does this make sense to you?” you tried to reason.
His story was so sad that it made your heart bleed but the relief that washed over you felt so good that it was making you dizzy. He was into you too. He could sense your scent too. He desired you too. You would not let him go away.
“Sounds good,” he replied with a tiny breathy voice.
You rolled your eyes. “No, it doesn’t.”
“Then what? You wish to stay here with me? Forever? On the Train?” he asked instead.
You bit your lower lip. “Where do you stay when it’s not Soulmates season?”
Haechan sat lower on the chair and his extended and spread legs made you curse at yourself for finding that attractive. “I live on the Train. Always had.”
“You just stay here alone? The whole year?” you leaned in surprised.
The man shrugged. “I had my Grandpa before. It wasn’t that bad. And I don’t know another world besides this one so I don’t miss it.”
“Where is he now?”
Haechan looked towards the window as if actually seeing what was behind that curtain. He probably knew what was behind it, you realized.
“He’s living with my mother. He couldn’t work anymore as he was too old.”
You leaned back in your chair as well and lifted your legs to rest them near him.
Haechan turned his head towards them and lifted one hand, letting his fingers trail the arch of one of them making you twitch.
He looked at your surprised expression and his eyelashes were heavy on his eyes.
Then he inserted two fingers between the hem of one of his white gloves and took it off, letting it fall to the ground. Then he did the same with his other hand.
You couldn’t speak.
No, you couldn’t think.
His fingers were slender and his touch was warm as he caressed your arch again, this time making you fully shiver. Seeing his bare hands shouldn’t have made you feel that way.
“Haechan,” you murmured, maybe as a warning, or maybe because you simply wanted to say his name.
“Y/N,” he said back, taking your feet and placing them on top of one of his thighs. He then looked down at them, slowly touching your ankles too, going up as much as he could reach which was too much for your dizzy head giving the crampness of the coach. You could have sworn it wasn’t so small before.
You hummed as he reached your knee, letting your skirts fall to your thighs in the movement. And when he reached the clasps of your garter keeping the tights up you jolted.
“I don’t think we should be doing this,” your voice wavered.
“I know,” he breathed out, yet his hands didn’t move away and you didn’t push them away either.
They kept going up, over your skirts this time until reaching the back of your corset which was starting to feel way too tight.
Haechan slowly slid down between your legs, on his knees, as if guided by a string coming from inside of you. The view made you mewl and the thought of doing this with anyone besides him sounded abhorrent in that moment.
The first pull made you inhale and put your hands on his shoulders. They felt firm.
The second pull at your corset made you bite your lower lip and Haechan’s pupils darted to it.
“Haechan,” you called out again, this time softly, like a prayer.
“Yes, darling,” he leaned even closer to you, attentive to your expression and reactions.
The pet name knocked the air out of your lungs.
“If-” you swallowed thickly, “if we have to separate-, please, I want-”
Haechan patiently waited for more. His eyes, his fucking eyes, they were so deep, and his lips, so so close to you. You could have just leaned forward and tasted them.
You felt like going insane.
“Remember when you said that you’d-” you changed the route of the phrase thinking it would be easier but you stopped again.
Haechan exhaled and pulled another string from your corset. “What is it that you want?”
“I want you to be my first.”
________
Something inside Haechan’s brain was screaming that it was all a mistake, that he was doing something he shouldn’t have.
But Haechan has been a very good boy his whole life while everyone around him made mistakes with not a single worry in the world. Warm between your legs he didn’t care if he’ll regret it.
But hearing you he stopped, inches away from your mouth. Your heavy breath was matching his and your cleaveage still tightly restricted in that corset made him wonder if you could feel how hard he was against the heavy skirts of your dress.
“I need to hear you ask me again, explicitly, and I need to hear you say that you’re aware this might be a mistake and you might regret it,” he grunted.
You fanned your lashes at him with that pure expression of yours.
“I want you to make me yours and I am aware of all of the consequences,” you murmured.
Your tone and the polite choice of words made him want to scream.
“Please,” you added and Haechan couldn’t take it anymore.
He leaned towards you and grabbed your chin with one hand, tasting the tender skin of your neck instead of your lips.
You exhaled and trembled against him, your pulse beating so fast underneath his tongue that he wondered how plump and wet you were between your legs.
So soft and malleable in his arms you let him gently push you into the bed that materialized underneath you.
________
The Conductor’s eyes were so deep that they looked almost black. His body felt so good on top of yours that you wondered if he could let his weight down even more to fully engulf you with his presence.
You couldn’t imagine feeling such intensity with someone else. He didn’t trust you with your feelings but the moment his lips pressed on yours you were sure he had to be your soulmate or nothing in life would have made sense.
And when you finally slid your hands in his hair you found it was as soft as you imagined.
His wet velvety tongue on your throat made you mewl in ways you’ve never heard yourself sound before.
Then he kissed your boiling skin on your clavicle and when he reached the swell of your breasts you felt on fire.
“Hng,” you whimpered, feeling his warm and wide palms press on your waist and slide underneath until he pulled up to sit. He never stopped kissing your body, not even when he pulled harshly at the corset strings to finally undo it.
You gasped at the sudden freeing sensation and shyly let your arms up for him to drag it up and let it fall to the side.
He cupped your free breasts soon after under the thinner dress material and you threw your head back.
Not in a million years you would regret that. It wasn’t possible.
And when your back hit the mattress again Haechan finally kissed you, slowly, brushing your lips together first, then delicately taking your upper lip between his, letting you taste his bottom one. Your fingers deepened the pressure on his shoulders the same moment you felt his tongue nudge at your mouth. You opened further and timidly let yours meet his. It tingled all over your body and when he slid it fully inside your mouth you moaned.
You couldn’t breathe nor think. You couldn’t even move.
Was this the love everyone was talking about? Because you were starting to understand.
In that moment it didn’t matter what you two would end up doing. The only thing you could concentrate on was the ardent kiss and his hands on your arms, reaching up to slid the dress straps off your shoulders.
Then he touched the spot with his lips and you finally gasped, taking in as much air as you could, extending your neck in the opposite direction, giving him more space to fully drive you crazy.
“Shh, it’s okay,” he murmured against your skin as you twitched ever so slightly. Your breast was almost bare and the thought of him seeing you as no one had before made your nipples poke the dress fabric until it hurt.
“Tell me to stop anytime and I will,” he added.
“I don’t want you to stop. Please,” you found yourself saying.
________
You were so warm. You were warm and soft and Haechan desired you so much that he had to bite his lower lip almost to blood to prevent himself from devouring you completely.
Insane, he thought, you were insane to ask him to fuck you like that, and he was also insane for going with it.
His cock was so hard that it was painful and he imagined you felt the same, so he leaned down and wet your hard nubs making you gasp so deliciously that he made a mental note to do it often.
The thoughts of that being your first time together but maybe also the last was banging into his brain but he decided to ignore it. Your little sounds were grounding him and the way your breast felt underneath his hands, overflowing between his fingers as he squeezed just added to his brain haze.
He was starting to feel feverish and if he didn’t ended up with his mouth between your legs soon he thought he was going to go insane.
Your hands on his shoulders made shivers go down his spine and when they moved to his hair, he hummed with your nipples against his tongue.
He wanted to make you feel good, he wanted to make you feel so fucking good.
And he told you, murmuring it on top of your skin, sliding down your torso and letting your scent and warmth guide his clouded brain.
Haechan took your dress with him and when he couldn’t take it anymore he lifted himself on his knees and dragged it up your legs, throwing it as far as he could.
Your chest was falling and dropping so fast underneath him and he took a moment to enjoy the view, letting his gaze caress you where his hand was, slowly from your ribcage down your navel until reaching the slit between your legs.
You gasped, the little O on your face making his almost growl.
“Have you ever touched yourself before, darling?” he asked with a voice he barely recognized.
You shivered and he leaned back down to shelter you with his body, his hand still lazily drawing circles around your plump and soaked clit.
__________
You tried to hide your face in the crook of his neck but he was quicker.
You couldn’t believe you were completely naked in front of the man you desired so desperately. Was that the cruel joke of the destiny? Giving you all before taking it away from you?
Haechan kissed your lips, this time deeply and rougher than the first. Then he breathed on them. “Answer me,” he demanded.
You melwed, unable to think. His fingertips were so delicate and gentle that they almost weren’t there, yet you felt them so well that you couldn’t concentrate on anything else.
“Only outside,” you admitted.
Haechan rubbed his nose against your cheek. “I thought you were a curious person. You never felt the need to know how it feels inside?”
You swallowed thickly. Not in your most depraved thoughts you imagined a gentleman talk to you like that. And you loved it.
“I was afraid,” you admitted.
Haechan hummed, kissing slowly alongside your neck then licking your ear. “You’re so sensitive. Were you afraid it was going to hurt?”
You nodded as a reply.
“Are you afraid now?” he looked you in the eyes, his fingertips never stopping for a moment.
“No,” you whispered.
Haechan’s wet lips were open as if to let more air get inside his lungs and the thought of you being the cause to that decadent expression made the wetness between your legs just get worse.
You bit your lower lip, wondering if he noticed and when he dropped his hand by a mere centimeter you could feel his finger nudge at your hole and collect every drop of it.
You closed your eyes in embarrassment, clasping the material of his shirt on his bicep, and it just made Haechan more eager to rub your clit in ways you never even thought of.
“Show me,” he said, his voice so thick and rough that you felt like swimming in it. “Show me how you touched yourself.”
“Please,” you begged unsure yourself for what.
“Don’t be shy. Put your hand on top of mine and guide me, love,” he murmured with a twinkle in his eyes that made your insides burn.
You let one of your hands slide down his arm and you reached the back of his hand between your legs. It felt so erotic that you felt like combusting.
“Yes, just like that,” he prompted you, his lips now back on your chest, gently biting the softness of your flesh.
You gulped and pressed your fingers on top of his, moving them in little circles you knew felt good. Haechan hummed. “Yeah? Do you like it like this?”
The little nod you gave him made him smile. Then it turned into something more ferocious.
“What about this?” he changed the movement, his fingers now gently flicking your nub up and down as well, pressing a bit more that you did it yourself, sending jolts of pleasure across your body.
“Yes,” you stuttered.
“Yeah?” he spoke in the crook of your neck. “Did you make yourself cum as well?”
You threw your head back at the sensation and his tone and his words didn’t help you feel grounded at all. “A few times.”
Or at least you thought you did. Because the way Haechan was making you feel didn’t even come close to the way you managed to make yourself feel alone.
“May I?” his words buzzed against your lips, so polite in contrast with the way his fingertip felt like nudging at your core.
You bit your lower lip and Haechan rubbed his lips on you as a in invitation to bite his lip instead. You inhaled and nodded, pressing your hand on top of his.
He sucked the air between his teeth and kissed you deeply, letting his tongue smack against yours in the wettest and most desperate kiss.
And when you felt his finger slide inside of you it felt so overwhelming that you clenched so hard he had to break off the kiss to shush you. “You need to relax for me, baby, yeah?”
You felt your whole body shake and Haechan kissed the corner of your mouth then your cheek, doing on your jaw and neck.
“It’s going to feel very good, I promise,” he murmured against your clavicle. “That’s right,” he exhaled, feeling your melt in his hold. “My sweet sweet girl, just like that.”
The praise went to your head so badly that you almost didn’t realize the way he managed to move inside and out of you slowly and when he reached a specific spot and curled his finger upwards you jolted in place, grabbing his shoulders with a strong grip, the moan that escaped your throat probably loud enough to wake up the neighbouring passengers.
“You like that, darling?” Haechan kept fucking you on his finger until you couldn’t close your mouth, the sensation sending the most intense jolts of electricity up your legs and torso.
“Fuck,” you exhaled and Haechan chuckled.
“Yeah? My lady became this dirty for me?”
“Shit,” you couldn’t stop yourself. “Oh, heavens.”
The wet sounds and Haechan’s quick breaths made you curl your toes, and when he stopped his hand and you felt his finger exit you mewled a protest.
“More, please?”
Haechan gave you a cocky smile, lifting himself on his knees in front of you and letting you stare at the way he took off his jacket then slowly, so fucking slowly, he unbuttoned his shirt.
His pristine skin peeking underneath the white fabric made your mouth water and you had to sit down as well, leaning in and pressing your lips on his chest.
________
Haechan exhaled and cupped the back of your head and when he felt your delicate fingers open the rest of his buttons he thought he’d cum on the spot.
Your touch was heaven on his chest and your lips started to get too low, very low, down his abdomen until reaching the band of his dress pants.
Your ass was full on display the way your were crouching on all fours and when you lifted your gaze up, your mouth so close to the tip of his clothed cock, he reached and gave you a light spank that made your eyes shine and your tender throat mewl.
He desperately wanted his cock down that throat but he knew it would be insanity.
So he grabbed your chin instead and pulled you upwards to kiss your mouth again, and this time when he pushed you into the mattress he didn’t care to be gentle.
The grunt that left your chest made him worried that he had been too harsh but the way your grabbed his hair and pulled him into the kiss again, wrapping your thighs around his waist told him you weren’t a porcelain doll.
And when he left your gasping mouth to devour your cunt the moan you made and the way your body curved almost broke him.
“Haechan,” you called out and he has never heard someone pronounce his name in a sexier way.
He hummed back, deeply, licking a stripe up from your hole to your clit and resting on it heavily before rolling the tip around it, tasting you, flicking it until he felt your nails dig in the forearm he snaked around one of your thighs.
He pressed his palm on your lower stomach and the way you inhaled deeply made him suck ever more.

Legs around his head - the Conductor’s head - and his mouth on you, his arms around your limbs and his scent all over your body, you’ve never felt more ready to die.
“God,” you moaned, shaking in his hold so much that he added more pressure on your hips and when you felt his fingers nudging at your hole again, this time two of them, gently pushing past the rim, you grabbed the sheets underneath your until you had no more strength.
“Please please please,” you mumbled, his fingers hooked in so deliciously that you couldn’t see anymore. You had no idea there was such pleasure out there.
Haechan hummed, almost growled, his mouth full of your and his deep blue eyes staring at you with such intensity that you just had to let go or you would go insane.
“I feel-” you tried, your voice rough.
The man let your clit go for a mere second. “Yeah? Come on, cum for me darling. Come on, my love.”
It was like a switch, his tongue back on you and his fingers stretching you so well that you could only bury your had in the pillow and scream, coming undone until the only thing you could hear was your own breaths and the gentle rumbling of the Train underneath you.
Haechan’s little kisses made your shaking thighs relax and you realized you were clasping his wrist so you let go with trembling fingers.
“My good good girl,” he came towards you, peppering kisses all over your body, his fingers still deep inside of you, feeling the way you kept rhythmically clenching around them.
His lips were wet and red when he reached your mouth.
You exchanged a deep look that made all the hairs on your body rise and when he kissed you slowly and you tasted yourself on his tongue you felt like pouty in his arms.
“I want to make you feel good too,” you whispered against his lips.
Haechan hummed and slid his fingers out, making you hiss. Then with his wet hand he grabbed yours gently and directed it towards his pants.
“Open the buttons,” he ordered and you gulped, sliding your second arm between your bodies and obeyed, opening them one by one and feeling the heat coming from his body.
“Now touch me,” he breathed against your temple and you felt like rolling your eyes back from the sheer intensity of that energy.
You looked up and saw the man of your life close his eyes and furrow his eyebrows almost in pain when you caressed his length from tip until base.
“Fuck,” he gulped. “Harder,” his order made you bit your lower lip and you added a second hand, grabbing it loosely and moving them both up and down.
Haechan wrapped your hands with his and you inhaled shakily at the darkness of his eyes. He guided you, making you squeeze more until his breath went missing.
“Like this?” you asked. He was hot and hard but so velvety that you were afraid to hurt him.
“Just like that, darling,” he reassured you and when you felt the drops of something sliding under your palm Haechan’s jaw clenched. “You’re making me feel so fucking good, good heavens Y/N.”
You picked up the pace, loving his sounds and his expressions and he groaned.
You wanted more. You needed more.
“Please, I need you,” you murmured against his cheek.
Haechan leaned in and bit down on your neck, sucking on your skin and the sting felt so good that you felt your cunt pool up again. “Say that again, darling.”
You exhaled. “I need you, Haechan, please.”
“Where?” he breathed on your open mouth.
“Inside of me,” you choked on air as he reached down and slid his cock out of your hands with a wince, letting it rest between your fold instead.
“Yeah?”
You nodded and gasped, feeling the heaviness on if rub against your sensitivity.
“I need you to stop me at any given moment of discomfort. Do you understand me?”
His tone and demeanor made you almost chuckle. He drove you crazy.
“Yes, sir,” you whispered and Haechan put his tongue inside his cheek at your choice of words.
He intertwined his fingers with yours while the other hand held the base of his cock to align himself with you.
It was so big and thick, two veins running down it similar to his forearms and it made you swallow dryly at the sinful thought that came inside of your head.
But you felt drunk and you didn’t care.
“I want it in my mouth,” you locked eyes with him and Haechan visibly crumbled between your legs.
“You’ll be the death of me,” he inhaled sharply through his teeth and pushed inside of you slowly making you gasp and squeeze his fingers.
“Mmmm,” you furrowed your eyebrows and Haechan stopped, leaning down to shush you, kissing your neck and guiding your breaths until you wrapped your legs around his waist and pulled him forward.
“Does it hurt?” he murmured, moving his hips ever so slightly, making more and more space for himself.
“It stings, outside, but it feels good, inside,” your phrases were broken and Haechan chuckled against your lips, giving you a quick kiss that you couldn’t concentrate on as he was getting closer and closer to the spot you oh so desperately wanted him to reach.
“It’s going to feel better soon,” he reassured.
“I know. How does- it feel-for-you?” your tiny voice, stuttering because of his shallow thrusts made Haechan dig his other hand in the mattress.
“It feels like heaven, my darling.”
You hummed and then gasped as Haechan felt you open even more, swallowing him so well that he had to compose himself before he could start losing it and ram inside of you.
“Does the thought of me feeling good turn you on, love?” he grabbed your waist, keeping you in place and finally bottoming out.
Your face scrunched and the moan you let out sounded like music to his ears.
“Haechan-”
“Yeah?”
_______
Your breath was so irregular that you felt not enough oxygen getting to your brain.
There were no words to describe how he felt inside of you, intoxicating, sinful, full, so fucking full, he was all over you, inside your body and mind and heart, you wanted him more and more, you wanted him forever.
You stared at him between your lashes and you hoped he could see all of that. You hoped he could understand how he made you feel and you hoped he felt the same.
“I know, baby,” he shushed you, his hips picked up the pace and he was heavy and deep, the sound of his skin slapping yours making you hide your face into the crook of his neck in shame. He let you do that and lifted your hand above your head, pushing into it as much as he wanted to push into you and couldn’t for fear of hurting you.
Your brain went to the image of him fucking you desperatly and animalistically, fast and with no worry.
You desperately wanted that.
You wanted him again. That couldn’t be the last time you saw each other.
No way.
“Haechan, kiss me, please,” you managed to speak between the gasps.
The man leaned down and kissed you deeply, fucking you both with his tongue and his cock, until you moaned into his mouth.
His eyes were feverish and his forehead shining with a thin layer of sweat.
You let his hand go to wrap his neck and dig your hands in his soft messy hair, not breaking eye contact until with no words you both orgasmed and you lulled each other’s shaking bodies to sleep.

Warrior of My Heart
Tumblr media
SUMMARY |  You returned home after a successful journey with your knight Jaehyun. Your brother, the king, wants you to start marrying and you knew there was one person that you wanted. PAIRINGS | Jaehyun/Fem!Reader GENRE |  non-idol au, knight!jaehyun, fantasy au, smut, unprotected sex, fingering, oral sex, fluff towards the end RATING |  Mature LENGTH |  6,412 words AUTHOR’S NOTE |  I was originally writing this with a whole story in mind with like an assassination attempt or a battle or something. But apparently it didn't turn out that way lolol. I don't even know if this has a storyline haha. Anyhow, I hope it's still okay!
Tumblr media
You sat atop your horse, holding your sword in hand and looked at the road ahead that led to the capital city and the place you called home. Neo City was a bustling city filled with wonder and hope. You looked at Jaehyun, your bodyguard and the knight-commander of the White Lotus Order, and gave him a happy smile.
"Home, sweet home." You exclaimed. "The journey has been a long one for us. I'm ready to sleep for the next month."
"Indeed, Princess." Jaehyun smiled at you. "I'm sure the knights are long over due for rest."
Jaehyun let out a chuckle and then started to lead your horse towards the city gates, taking off his helm and placing it on your horse's saddle.
"So what shall we do once we get there?" He asked you, making you blush lightly. You were so used to going to bed alone now, that being in a relationship seemed almost impossible for you to handle. Your eyes traveled up and down his body and all you could think about is how much you wanted to feel his body pressed against yours. It had been too long since you last felt his touch on your skin and seeing him here, made you wonder if he ever thought about you as well. If he had moved on. You quickly shook those thoughts away and stood up straight, your armor settling around your frame as you tighten your grip on your sword.
"There is something I have always wanted to do but never had the time for." You said quietly. "When we get to the palace I will need you to help me."
"Of course Princess." Jaehyun answered, bowing before giving you a respectful nod. "Anything you ask."
You walked through the gates of the city in awe. Neo City was a thriving place with a large economy and political influence within the nation. The streets were lined with people running from all directions and you got lost in their jumble. Once they finally cleared you found yourself standing outside the main gates of the palace where your brother, King Taeyong, resided. Your jaw dropped at the sight of the majestic building and stepped forward towards it.
Once you stepped through the gate, the city grew silent as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. You smiled at the people around you and headed straight towards the palace. The guards opened the doors to the main hall and allowed you to pass without question. All the servants and the cooks stopped what they were doing and bowed to you. You smiled politely and then proceeded to head towards the throne room, passing by all the chambers until you reached your destination. As you entered the room you immediately noticed Taeyong sitting upon the throne, drinking a cup of tea while reading some reports. When he saw you enter, he set down the documents and gave you a bright smile.
"My sister! You're back!" He greeted, rising from his seat. "Come give your brother a hug."
You rushed into his arms and he embraced you tightly, lifting you off the ground in his embrace. His strong arms wrapped around your waist as you hugged him tight, not wanting to let go of him. After several moments of just hugging each other, you let go of him, still keeping a firm grasp on his shirt as you looked into his face.
"How was your journey?" He asked you curiously, giving you a puzzled look. "Did you finally find a lover? Or broke some hearts along your travels?"
You laughed lightly at his question and ran your fingers through your hair.
"Maybe." You replied with a smirk. "But I am tired and want to get some sleep. How is mother?"
"She's fine." He answered. "You know her love is pure. She never leaves my side even when she's at work. But if you really must know, I heard she wasn't feeling well earlier today. That's why we didn't see you coming back."
He chuckled as you let out an annoyed sigh.
"Oh… Well I should probably check on her then." You told him with a small laugh.
"By all means my dear sister." Taeyong told you kindly, bowing to you before getting up from his chair and heading towards the door. "You go check on Mother and I'll call you when lunch is ready."
With a nod, you went to leave the room but stopped halfway to hear Taeyong tell you to come closer. You leaned in close to his ear, hearing the sound of the papers under his desk shifting as he leaned in as well.
"If you ever do end up having sex, don't forget to use protection." He whispered, chuckling at your look of confusion. "I know I'm only your older brother and that you probably think of me as an idiot most of the time, but I don't like to see my little sister get hurt."
You raised an eyebrow at him.
"Why would I be having sex?" You asked innocently, causing him to burst out laughing.
"Well…" He managed to say between laughs. "You are my little sister after all and… We are royalty. Who knows who might want to take advantage of your status?"
You gave him a light shove to stop his laughter and looked away. He's right, though. Being royalty, there was bound to be someone that would try and exploit your position and power for their own gain. In fact, one such person tried just that just two years ago. Thankfully you managed to stop them in time but it was also because of your efforts that the man ended up losing his life and eventually became the reason you decided to become the leader of the White Lotus order. But thinking about that story put a dark shadow on your mind and you turned your attention back to your brother.
"Taeyong." You whispered softly. "Do you think I'll ever get married and have children?"
He gave you a thoughtful look before answering. "I don't know, sis. It depends on the person you end up with and whether or not you both feel comfortable with the idea of marriage."
He sighed and then placed a gentle kiss on your forehead.
"I just hope you'll be happy." He told you gently. "And I wish you'd hurry up and find a lover so you can stop moping around."
You gave him a playful punch to the shoulder and stepped back.
"A lover huh? Who do you suggest I should choose?" You asked, looking him dead in the eye. "One of our knights?"
"Hey!" Taeyong laughed at your suggestion. "Don't tempt me! They might not seem very nice at first glance but deep down they are loyal and honorable men."
You rolled your eyes and shrugged.
"Whatever you say, my king brother." You told him with a smile. "Besides, I doubt any of them are single. I bet they are all happily dating someone right now."
Taeyong shrugged and smiled fondly at you.
"I guess that is true. But don't worry, there are plenty more handsome young men that would gladly accept you into their lives."
You giggled at his comment and then grabbed his arm, tugging him toward the exit of the room.
"C'mon. Let's go see Mother." You urged him, stepping past him and heading out of the main hall.
"Yes, yes." He agreed, following behind you with a small grin on his face. "Let's go see Mother."

It was 3 days later and the entire kingdom was celebrating your arrival back to the palace. There were decorations lining the halls and dozens of servants hurried about to prepare for the celebration. Your brother was busy trying to make plans to invite all the nobles and members of the government to attend the grand feast that was planned to be held tomorrow. Everyone in the castle seemed cheerful and eager to celebrate the reunion of the royal family and you couldn't help but smile brightly at the sound of their voices.
In the courtyard, hundreds of servants worked diligently preparing the meals and preparing them for delivery to different parts of the palace. Inside the gardens, knights were gathered near the edge of the lake cleaning and repairing their weapons. Looking around, you spotted young ladies wearing colorful dresses waiting in line to speak to Jaehyun, the Knight-Commander, hoping to catch his eye.
Your brother stopped talking to a couple of soldiers near the gate and looked around, spotting you nearby. He raised an eyebrow at you and pointed at you, motioning for you to join him.
Walking up to him, you tilted your head at him curiously and waited for him to continue.
"We're inviting the Knights to participate in the feast as well." He told you. "I figure we should show them our appreciation for helping save Neo City while you and the White Lotus Order were out on your journey."
You nodded in understanding.
"Yeah, that's a good idea." You replied with a slight nod. "I bet they would enjoy attending the feast as well."
"And maybeeeee, we'll find you a husband." Taeyong let out a laugh. "If that happens, I promise I won't tease you anymore."
He sighed as you let out a giggle and turned around to head back inside the palace.
As you passed by the garden, you noticed that many women were beginning to approach the knight commander and talk to him. Their smiles were wide and their eyes filled with excitement. Some women wore beautifully embroidered clothing and others were dressed in simple dresses, yet no matter what they wore, their beauty shone through their attire.
And just watching them talk excitedly with him made you feel a little jealous.
You've slept together multiple times during your journey. The times where you were lonely, the occasional drunk nights, or even that one time where you suffered a shoulder injury from an arrow and you had a fever.
You thought that there was something developing between you two. Or was it all one-sided on your end? And now that you were back in Neo City, Jaehyun didn't even bother showing any interest in you…
No, this isn't fair. You shook your head and frowned, feeling a bit depressed as you began walking again. Just then, you felt a hand grabbing your arm and stopping you in your tracks.
"So, the Princess General and the Knight-Commander, huh?" Taeyong muttered as he caught up with you. "Who would have thought?"
Looking at him, you could see he was clearly concerned about your current mood.
"What do you mean?" You asked with a frown.
"When you stopped I was going to ask you if everything was alright but now I wonder." He answered with a chuckle. "Are you alright, my dear sister?"
Your frown intensified and you shook your head slowly, trying to calm down your growing anger.
"He doesn't even care about me, does he?" You asked Taeyong angrily. "Not after we spent two whole years traveling around together, constantly risking our lives for each other, yet as soon as we arrived back home, it's as if nothing happened between us."
You paused and let out a frustrated sigh.
"It feels like he barely acknowledges me anymore and I'm starting to get really mad about it." You explained in a quiet voice. "It's not fair. He always used to make me laugh and joke around but now all he does is ignore me. It makes me even more mad since he's my bodyguard and the knight-commander."
"I see." Taeyong murmured, glancing over at the young women approaching Jaehyun. "I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to hit him in the face, just so you can prove to yourself that he does care about you."
Your eyes widened and you started laughing bitterly.
"Oh yeah, punching him will definitely solve all my problems." You said sarcastically. "Do you really believe that hitting him would somehow magically fix things between us?"
"Well, you said it yourself. He doesn't care about you. So maybe if you show him that you don't care either, he'll finally notice how much he missed you." Taeyong said quietly.
"How can you be so optimistic?" You asked, rolling your eyes. "Aren't you worried that I'll just break his nose or something instead?"
He chuckled and placed a comforting hand on your shoulder.
"My lovely sister, I assure you that there's nothing wrong with hitting him. If anything, it will only bring you closer together." He said with a soft smile. "Now, come. Let's get dinner ready."
At his words, you looked down at the ground and gave him a reluctant nod. He's right. You sighed and followed him into the palace, feeling your temper slowly dying down with every step. At least he seems to be right, after all.

The next day, everyone in the city celebrated your return and preparations were underway for the banquet being prepared in your honor. By early afternoon, the entire city was covered in clouds of dust as numerous carts were being pulled through the streets carrying food and drink items for the upcoming feast.
In front of the palace, a large tent had been set up and several caterers were already busy setting the tables and arranging the dishes. As you walked into the courtyard, several of the young girls you saw yesterday were standing near the entrance, waiting for a chance to speak to Jaehyun.
Most of them were dressed in pretty clothes adorned with sparkling jewels. They all seemed nervous and kept staring at the tent entrance nervously. You took a seat near the table and watched them wait for a few minutes before Taeyong joined you and stood beside you.
"All these beautiful ladies are competing to win the heart of our noble Knight Commander." He informed you with a proud smile. "And according to rumors, they are all vying for his attention."
"It seems so." You nodded, grinning as you watched the women walk by, one after another. "They're really trying hard."
A servant approached you with a tray full of drinks and handed you a glass of water. You thanked her and then watched as the girls continued to approach Jaehyun. They tried to talk to him politely and tried to make him laugh with silly jokes, but as soon as he didn't respond, most of them quickly retreated, disappointed.
"I swear, he has the best poker face in the world." You remarked with a laugh, sipping at your water. "All these girls came here believing that he'll instantly fall for them and he never breaks character. How he keeps doing it amazes me."
After watching them for a few more moments, you heard footsteps coming your way and turned to see the Knight Commander approaching.
Jaehyun's eyes scanned over the crowd and eventually rested on you. He gave his greetings to Taeyong before coming to face you.
"There you are, Princess." He greeted, smiling at you. "I was looking for you."
A warm smile lit up your face and you couldn't help but nod as he spoke.
"Oh really?" You asked. "I wasn't planning on spending the entire afternoon watching these girls trying to get your attention though."
Jaehyun chuckled softly as he glanced over the girls who still lingered around him, searching for his approval.
"Don't worry about them." He reassured you. "They will leave once they realize I'm not interested."
“Really now?” You chuckled as well and turned away, resting your chin in your palm. “Who wouldn’t want the attention of the Knight-Commander?”
“Don’t tell me you’re jealous?” Jaehyun teasingly asked.
“Why would I be jealous? It’s not like you have feelings for me.” You muttered.
"Oh? Didn't the princess forget that I like her?" Jaehyun sounded surprised when you glanced back at him and his eyes narrowed in confusion. "Did you forget those restless nights by the fire? Those nights where our limbs were tangled together?"
His gaze softened and you blushed lightly as his fingers reached up to gently stroke your cheek. His touch sent tingles across your skin and your stomach fluttered with excitement.
"I didn't forget." You whispered softly, unable to stop your lips from curving upward into a tiny smile.
You suddenly realized that Jaehyun's smile had changed as well and his eyes were shining as he stared down at you. It made your cheeks grow warm and your heart begin to beat faster.
"I was just wondering…" You hesitated slightly, biting your lower lip as you looked at him. "Do you remember that night by the fire when you helped me take care of my shoulder wound? When you wrapped your arms around me and stayed with me until morning?"
Jaehyun blinked and a wide grin spread across his face as he glanced down at you.
"Princess, I remember everything about that night." He breathed huskily, reaching out to caress your cheek with the tips of his fingers. "But I didn't think that you remembered it either."
You smiled at him shyly as he leaned forward, his mouth just inches from yours. Your breath caught in your throat as he brushed his lips against yours, sending shivers down your spine.
Then he pressed his forehead against yours and whispered in your ear.
"I've never forgotten about that night either, Princess."
You bit your bottom lip as his words slowly sank in. A dull ache was slowly building within you as your heart raced. With a shaky breath, you closed your eyes and nodded slightly.
"You know, this reminds me of that day we found ourselves trapped in the dungeons together." You admitted quietly, bringing your free hand up to cover his. "We were surrounded by darkness and death. There was only one light and that was you."
"That's when I knew that I'd spend the rest of my life protecting you." He whispered in your ear.
"I'd hate to ruin your love fest, sister," a voice called out next to you. You looked at Taeyong, a smirk on his face. "But did you and the knight-commander forget that we are in public?"
With a groan, Jaehyun stepped back and placed a hand on your shoulders. He glanced over your shoulder and you could see the rest of the girls still lingering around, talking quietly amongst themselves.
"Yeah, sorry." He mumbled sheepishly. "I guess I got carried away."
He bowed to Taeyong and the servant, leaving you alone with your older brother. Taeyong eyed you suspiciously, a mischievous grin on his face.
"So?" He asked slyly. "Do I hear wedding bells?"
"Taeyong!" You gasped, narrowing your eyes at him.
He laughed and reached out to ruffle your hair playfully.
"Sis, I know you love Jaehyun." He said seriously. "You two belong together. He's practically shown that he loves you in front of all the nobles and servants."
You opened your mouth to protest, but Taeyong raised a finger and silenced you with a look.
"Just think about it, okay?" He told you with a wink. "If he asked you to marry him tomorrow, would you say yes?"
You paused and thought about what Taeyong said. What would you do if Jaehyun asked you to marry him tomorrow? Would you accept his proposal? The answer was clear: Of course you would!
As you thought about your future husband, a soft sigh escaped your lips and your eyes slowly closed. You rested your head on your hand as Taeyong and Jaehyun started chatting casually while taking their seats.
After some time passed, you noticed that the young women you saw earlier were gone. You sighed softly and leaned back in your chair, relaxing slightly.
Despite all the festivities, your mind kept wandering back to your relationship with Jaehyun.
You loved him. More than anything else in the world, you loved him. And deep down inside, you were sure that he felt the same way about you. After all, they were soul mates. Two halves of the same whole. And you were confident that he was the only person you would ever want to share your life with.
Everything seemed perfect.
Why should you even bother to try and find someone else? It was almost as if fate was telling you that you were meant to be together forever.
As you watched the people dancing in the ballroom below, you smiled as you thought about the first time you met Jaehyun.
It was an exciting day, filled with uncertainty and joy. But no matter what happened, no matter how the day ended, you always believed that everything would turn out alright.
Yes, today is going to be a good day. And every day after that. Because your life is already complete.
Even if he won't admit it, Jaehyun loves you. And you love him.
You always knew that one day you'd have to choose between love and duty, but now… Now, it's too late to make such a choice. You can't separate your heart from your duty any longer. Not anymore.
With a small smile, you turned away from the window and faced the palace wall.
"Jaehyun." You whispered softly, letting your lips curl upwards into a small smile. "Tonight… Tonight, I'm finally going to tell you how I feel."
Tumblr media
"Princess Y/N?"
Your name sounded out from behind you and you slowly turned around to see Jaehyun giving you a soft smile.
"Are you alright?" He asked, his voice laced with concern. "What happened? Is everything alright?"
"Yeah, everything's fine." You assured him, walking over to him and giving him a small hug.
"Good." He nodded with a smile. "That's good to hear."
After a few moments of silence you pulled away from him and smiled at him.
"I want to thank you for being here for me, Jaehyun." You told him, reaching up and brushing a strand of hair from his face. "It means a lot to me."
"No problem." He told you with a nod. "You've always been there for me whenever I needed someone. It's only fair that I return the favor."
You smiled softly at him.
"I'm glad you're here, Jaehyun." You said softly. "This is… Kind of lonely being alone again."
"You don't have to be alone." He said with a comforting smile. "You've got me here with you."
His words made you relax and your eyes trailed down to his lips. You remembered how amazing it felt when he kissed you and how perfect he tasted. You missed kissing him. Not only did you miss kissing him but you also missed cuddling up to him. Before you knew it, your lips were on his and your arms wound around his neck. A gasp left your mouth as you leaned in, letting your lips part slightly as you opened your mouth for him. With a moan you slid your tongue across his bottom lip and met his tongue with your own. Slowly you started to pull away from him, kissing his jawline and down his neck, enjoying the sweet scent of his sweat mixed with his natural smell.
"Princess…" He breathed heavily, pulling you into another long kiss.
"Come." You grabbed his hand and led him to your bed chamber. Once inside you shut the door behind you and pressed your back against it.
"Do you remember the night you saved me?" You asked, tracing the shape of his mouth with your finger. "The night of that bandit attack where I almost lost my life?"
Jaehyun's hands came up to cup your cheeks and he stared at you with a heated expression.
"I'll never forget it." He promised you with a growl. "I'll never forget the way you screamed my name and the way you fought off those bandits. You were such a brave girl and I was proud of you."
"Some Princess General I was, getting caught by bandits." You let out a small laugh. "But then here comes the Knight-Commander coming in to save me."
"Nothing you could've done, Princess." He retorted playfully. "Those guys wouldn't have stopped attacking you if it wasn't for me. Besides, I think they appreciated me showing them how a real man saves a damsel in distress."
You let out a quiet chuckle at his comment and traced the line of his collarbone with your fingertip.
"What if I told you I want to repay you?" You asked, raising an eyebrow at him. "That I want to repay you for saving my life."
Jaehyun's eyebrows furrowed as he listened to your words. His eyes searched yours as you held his gaze intently. For a moment, he couldn't move or speak. All he could do was stare at you in awe. He wanted nothing more than to keep kissing you but something seemed to be holding him back. Finally, he gathered himself together enough to reply.
"Princess…" He breathed out hoarsely. "I would be honored if you wanted to repay me for what I did that night."
Before you had a chance to react, Jaehyun lifted you up onto the bed and lowered himself down to lie next to you. Your body melted into his and he pulled you close to him, wrapping his arms around you tightly and drawing you into his embrace. His lips pressed against your forehead and your hands tangled in his hair as you nuzzled into his chest. His skin was smooth and warm to the touch and it reminded you of the way it felt against your body. The thought made you shiver and your stomach clenched tightly as you held yourself tighter against him. You wanted to stay this way forever . To never let go of him. To never stop being held by him.
Your hands moved down to his waist and unbuttoned his tunic. He sighed deeply and ran his hands up and down your arms as you continued to undo the buttons. As soon as all the buttons were undone, you slid your hands underneath his shirt, resting your palms against his warm bare skin. You wanted to make him feel as good as he made you feel and for a moment you wondered if this would actually happen. Would he actually let you repay him?
With a growl, Jaehyun sat up and pulled you into his lap, placing a firm kiss on your lips before pulling away and staring at you with intense passion filled eyes. His hands came up to cup your cheeks and then slowly slid down your neck until they reached your shoulders.
He began to caress your shoulders with featherlight touches and his lips returned to yours.
As his kisses grew deeper and his touch rougher, you closed your eyes and laid your head against his chest, enjoying the feeling of his strong heartbeat beneath your palm. This was your favorite place in the entire world. Your safe haven. Your refuge. Whenever you were troubled, whenever you felt pain or anger or sadness; whenever you just needed some time to think; this was where you went. It was always a sanctuary for you. Where you were free to express yourself without worrying about being judged or chastised. No matter what you were going through, no matter what you were trying to hide from everyone else, you knew that you could always come here and just relax and be at peace. Now, lying here in Jaehyun's arms, you finally understood why he was willing to go through whatever hell existed for you.
Why was he ready to risk his life to save yours? Because you were precious to him and he couldn't imagine a world without you in it.
When his lips touched your ear lobe, your heart began to race and you bit your lower lip, trembling as your hands traveled up and down his back, lightly kneading the muscles in his arms. When his hands dropped to your waist, you tightened your grip around his neck and moaned softly as his fingers brushed against the sides of your breasts.
Suddenly, you pulled away from him and looked into his eyes, noticing how much they had darkened with desire. You smiled softly and gently traced the line of his jaw with your fingertips. His eyes widened as you leaned forward and gently took his lips in a tender kiss.
Just like before, his lips parted for you and he eagerly accepted your tongue, opening his mouth wider as you swept your tongue across his teeth and against his lips. The electricity running between the two of you had increased tenfold since last time and it sent ripples of pleasure throughout your entire body. You didn't realize how much you missed him until he was in front of you again. How much you missed this. How much you missed his presence.
Slowly you broke apart from the kiss and ran your hands down his chest, feeling his heartbeat accelerate as your fingers stroked the ridges of his abs.
His arms wrapped around you once again and his fingers skimmed across your hips, causing you to moan loudly. The tension in the air became thick and heavy and neither of you could breathe properly as the feelings coursing through your bodies intensified and every touch felt even more erotic than the last. His lips touched the skin of your cheek and down your neck, sending waves of shivers down your spine and goosebumps popping up all over your body. Your breaths became shorter and quicker and your heart began to pound harder as you clutched at his shirt desperately, wanting more of his touch.
In one swift movement, Jaehyun pulled away from you and unbuckled his belt, tossing it aside. Then, with a seductive smirk he pushed his pants down, revealing his cock which had hardened considerably since the last time you saw it. You licked your lips as your eyes roamed over his naked body, memorizing every inch of him. In your mind, you already knew exactly how his body felt against yours. Just thinking about it caused your nipples to become erect and you squirmed under his gaze, unconsciously wanting him to continue exploring your body with his mouth. Suddenly, his lips found their way to your nipples and he took one in his mouth while the other lay nestled in his palm. The vibrations from his mouth and the warmth from his hand were too much and you arched your back as the sensations built within you. You held on to his head and whimpered quietly, begging for more.
"Oh God…" You moaned softly as he drew circles around your nipple with his tongue. "Please, please…"
"Say it." He whispered roughly, moving his hand to rub against your clit.
"Fuck me, Jaehyun." You begged him, gripping his shoulders tightly. "Please, fuck me!"
With a groan, he turned his attention to your clit and used his thumb to massage it. You closed your eyes and gasped, moaning louder and louder as your legs buckled and your nails dug into his shoulder blades.
He rubbed his thumb in slow circular motions and you thrashed your head back and forth in an attempt to find relief. He sucked one of your nipples into his mouth and flicked it with his tongue before switching to the other one and doing the same thing.
As he suckled your nipples and teased your clit with his thumb, he continued to stroke your pussy, making sure that every sensation you experienced was amplified and intense. Soon, your body began to shake and you started to scream incoherently as a violent orgasm tore through you. You squeezed your eyes shut and screamed out loud as the sensations rushed through you. It felt like your entire body was on fire and there was no escape. You screamed so loudly that your throat began to hurt and your body began to cramp up. Finally, after several minutes, you fell limp in Jaehyun's arms, unable to stand any longer.
As your breathing slowed down, Jaehyun kissed your temple and pressed a soft kiss against your neck. After catching his breath, he removed his thumb from your pussy and gave you a wicked grin.
"Not quite yet." He whispered, pushing you back onto the bed and crawling up next to you.
With one hand still rubbing your clit, he lowered his head and buried his face between your thighs. You closed your eyes and moaned softly as he began licking up and down your slit. You spread your legs as wide as possible, eager for his tongue to get closer to your most sensitive area. He opened his mouth wider and took your clit into his mouth and gently began sucking on it, making you shudder uncontrollably.
His hands massaged your inner thighs and as his tongue continued to explore your pussy, his fingers began to gently run along the length of your labia, spreading your juices all over your swollen clit. You jerked slightly as his fingers slid over your sensitive spot and his tongue kept up its relentless assault on your clit. Your head fell back as he increased the pressure on your clit and he continued to lick and suck on it as your hands fisted the sheets and your body trembled violently. You cried out loudly as another powerful orgasm rocked through you and you bit down hard on your bottom lip to stifle your cries of pleasure.
Finally, your breathing returned to normal and Jaehyun slowly rose up and glanced at you. His eyes were burning brightly and you could tell that he was absolutely overcome with lust. Without saying anything, he climbed on top of you and pressed his hard cock against your entrance. Before you could say anything, he thrust deep inside you and the shockwave of pleasure that ran through you made you gasp loudly.
The way he held you tightly as he pounded into you sent shivers through your entire body and you couldn't help but grab his ass and pull him closer to you. His hot breath washed over your face and his teeth nibbled at your neck as his fingers gripped your hips tightly.
It felt amazing to have him inside you again and you could already tell that he was giving it everything he had. There was nothing soft or gentle about the way he moved, grinding his hips against yours with each thrust, slamming into you with such force that it almost hurt.
Each thrust seemed to strengthen your feelings for him and it scared you slightly because they felt more passionate than ever. As his fingers rubbed against your g-spot, you felt your orgasm building up quickly and you bit your lip as your vision clouded and blurred and your heart raced wildly.
You let out a small scream as you lost control completely and threw your head back as a powerful orgasm ripped through you. The orgasm itself was short lived but the aftershocks were even stronger than before. The intensity of the emotions coursing through your body overwhelmed you and you collapsed into Jaehyun's arms, crying silently as he continued to move inside you. Every movement of his hips felt incredible and when he grabbed your hair and kissed your neck, your heart nearly stopped beating. Everything about this moment was perfect.
When your orgasms subsided, you managed to catch your breath and open your eyes, only to see Jaehyun smiling back at you with a look of pure satisfaction on his face. He stared deeply into your eyes and cupped your face with his hands, bringing his lips closer to yours. Slowly, he brought his lips towards yours and you felt your heart skip a beat as his soft lips touched yours and his tongue entered your mouth. As you wrapped your arms around his neck and ran your fingers through his silky hair, you realized that you never wanted this night to end. You never wanted this relationship to end.
"I love you." You whispered against his lips.
"I love you too." He replied simply, leaning in and pressing his lips against yours again.
Slowly, you laid your head on his chest and listened to his heart racing. It was incredibly calming and you breathed in his scent, relishing in the fact that you were here, with him, right now. All was right in your world and you were thankful for the moments like these. Moments like this when you get to feel loved by someone who actually meant something to you.
He leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on your forehead and sighed.
"I need to ask you something." He asked, brushing your hair away from your face.
"Okay?" You replied, looking up at him.
"Will you marry me?"
Your eyes widened and your heart leaped into your throat. You nodded slightly and smiled softly as tears welled up in your eyes.
"Yes." You whispered, squeezing his hands.
He grinned widely and grabbed your face with both of his hands, kissing you passionately. When he finally pulled away, he was beaming at you with pride and happiness. You ran your hands down his chest and stomach and then moved them up his back, lightly tracing your fingernails against his smooth skin. He closed his eyes and savored in your touch.
"Do you know what I'm going to do when we're married?" You asked playfully, tilting your head to the side.
"What?" He asked curiously.
"I want to have a baby with you." You giggled.
He pulled you close and planted a soft kiss on your lips.
"Well, if you want kids… I think I can give you one." He chuckled, tightening his grip on your waist.
"How many?" You giggled.
"Five? Ten?"
"A hundred?!" You laughed, making him laugh as well.
"We'll see how many come after the first one." He smirked.
As your laughter died down, you tightened your embrace and placed a gentle kiss on his lips. He stroked your hair lovingly and rested his chin on top of your head.
"I love you." You whispered softly.
"I love you too." He whispered back.
Neither of you spoke anymore. The moment had been perfect and neither of you wanted it to end. Instead, you fell asleep in each other's arms, basking in the feeling of being loved and knowing that this was where you belonged.

Hello! I saw that your requests are opened. Can you please write something or a smut with Doyoung siren? It sounds so incredible in the beginning of golden age 🤯
hi! I know this is SOO late but I'm still getting used to this whole request thing...hopefully will be much better at it next year :) anyway, I think it's probably different to what you envisioned but it does involve siren Doyoung so :D
the girl of the Surface
Tumblr media
I leant over to kiss Doyoung on the cheek. Sure enough, the skin on his face felt wet against my lips, and he tasted like salt. When I pulled away, his cheeks were flushed deep orange.
“May I see you again, Doyoung.” I walked away after that, not knowing this was the start of an endless story, a loop, if you will.
pairing: siren!doyoung x fem!reader
other members: the 127 members :)
word count: 3k
genre: low fantasy, smut
warnings: sexual content so minors please dni! yes the sexual content is between sirens and humans so if that makes you uncomfy then don't read, penetrative sex, riding, kissing, fingering, profanity (use of the f word mainly)
disclaimer: this is a fanfiction purely from my (filthy) imagination. I don't know the nct members and don't claim that they act like this in real life. I also do not condone any of the activity by any of the characters in this fic. I'm also not a siren expert so feel free to educate me kindly if I'm wrong about certain things - I did do some research for this but there's obviously a lot out there on stuff like this
a/n: honestly i'm a bit iffy about the quality of this - I feel like it's not my best writing but I'm still eager to get this out bc I feel like it's intriguing at the least. I feel like subconsciously I adapt my writing style to suit whoever I'm reading rn - and rn I'm reading the starless sea so I tried to be more whimsical - but reading back on this I don't think I can pull off this style like queen erin morgenstern can so...anyway it's a work in progress :D also completely forget about golden age oops
also let's just say the jungwoo alien fic walked so this one could run lmao
Every day, Doyoung sneaked away to meet the girl of the Surface.
That’s what everyone else called her, like she owned the place. Nobody knew her name, voice, what she wore or even what she carried. The outlines of her face and body were always blurry, just out of focus.
He wasn’t supposed to go see her. Not on the first day, and definitely not on the days after that.
Doyoung mainly spent most of his days cooped up in his bedroom, nose buried in the pages of a book, words swimming around in his head at all hours of the day. While his siblings rushed here and there, tails flapping and knocking knick-knacks off the makeshift shelves he had built, gossiping about the latest happenings at the market, he travelled the world in his head. Not just the one below, but above the Surface.
Many nights were spent awake, wondering, what is so bad about the Surface?
One night, way before he had ventured above and first laid eyes on her, excited shouts had awoken him from a floaty slumber, and he swam out of his house to find the body of a human male falling through the water, his white shirt billowing out of his body, one shoe coming off his feet, threatening to be lost in the depths of the water.
His brother, Jaehyun, nudged him. “Hey.”
He nodded, acknowledging his presence, but his eyes never left that shoe, not until it fell off completely and started to float away. At the same time, he watched the water around the body stain red, spreading quickly like he imagined paint would on canvas. Above the Surface, of course.
“You think this is how it is above the Surface?”
“Like what?” His brother was eating already. Not the human – well, not yet, anyway.
“Do they also feed on-“
“Hey! Doyoung! Get over here. We need more sirens.”
The day after that, Doyoung and Jaehyun were initiated and sent up for the very first time.
“Hyung, how are you moving so easily with these things?” Jaehyun rubbed his sides in annoyance, wincing when his fingers met the quickly hardening ridges of fins. “I can’t believe I’m going to have this for the rest of my life.”
Doyoung was quiet, the swish-swish of his body travelling upwards, closer towards the Surface. His thoughts were flooded, the voices of the other sirens refusing to settle in his brain. Do not rise above the Surface.
But the people in the books, with their dances and songs – different to the ones he knew. Songs that inspired, that brought peace, that declared love.
Not songs that represented betrayal, violent ends for the ones who dared to stop and listen.
 Would he be able to hear those songs?
“It’ll be fun. You know,” He caught up to Doyoung now, arms brushing as they swam in sync. “the others said you can have fun with them before the song ends.”
Doyoung looked at his younger brother, whose eyes were glinting with something akin to pride, or mischief. “What kind of fun?”
Jaehyun smiled at him. “Remember that time Johnny-hyung made that huge thing crash, and it had hundreds of humans on it? Well, he said he had a lot of fun that day.”
“It’s called a ship.” Doyoung looked ahead as the water began to lighten, signalling their arrival. “Those huge things are ships.”
“Okay…” He trailed off, frowning slightly before getting distracted by his new fins again, now fully hard and sharp enough to cut the skin of his hands if he pressed down too hard. “Anyway, we can always hope for people on the shore too. In fact, they say there’s a human who lives on the shore of the land nearby.”
“What land?” Doyoung watched the rays of the light source above, the sun as the humans called it, let beams of light strike through the water.  They moved on their own accord, freely, like how he pictured the legs of the dancers as they moved to music above the Surface.
“Hyung it’s called an island, actually.” Jaehyun smirked, teasingly flicking his tail against Doyoung. The pressure of the fins in his sides started to push into his chest, making him feel a little lightheaded. A human…on an island? Above the Surface?
“Yeah, well, it’s kind of a legend. Like, legend has it she exists, but she never responds to a siren’s call.”
Something turned in Doyoung’s stomach. “She doesn’t…” he whispered, looking down, thoughts plaguing him.
“Yeah. They tried everything, but…not a single time did she even step closer, or indicate she was affected by the call. Hyung, they even,” Jaehyun grabbed Doyoung’s arm, letting his body float around to face him. “rose above the Surface. A siren-hyung was desperate. And then-“
“And then what?”
“He was never seen again.” For a moment it was silent, Jaehyun’s eyes staring unblinking into his own. Then, his torso erupted in fits of laughter, the fins in his sides uncomfortably moulded to his shaking body. “I can’t believe you fell for that, Hyung.” Doyoung sighed, shrugging off the arms of his younger brother. Above him, the sun burned ferociously, the water lining the edge of the Surface getting lighter.
I had no idea I would meet Doyoung that day at the shore.
I was expecting a stretch of time with nothing to keep me company but the sounds of the rushing waves and the mess of my own thoughts. But alas, the figure became clearer as I walked barefoot across the sands.
Stopping in my tracks, wanting desperately to have some sort of weapon handy instead of a hefty book (though, a book could easily become a weapon if you try hard enough), I called out, chest feeling tight all of a sudden. “Who are you?”
The man was naked excepting the wrap of brown fabric around his hips, and my eyes ran across the weird lines on the sides of his toned chest. He was completely dry.
He didn’t move, and, I couldn’t see his face yet, so it was a surprise to hear his voice for the first time. Not only because I didn’t expect him to speak, but because his voice came as a deep, sonorous sound right into my ears, as if I had earbuds in and had just hit play.
“My name is Doyoung. I’m a siren.”
I should have turned away immediately, ignored him, or even stayed in place, waiting for him to leave. But instead, I did the worst thing you could ever do in such a situation.
In storybooks, sirens use songs that capture you, much like a physical trap, until you’re so far deep you fail to comprehend what you got yourself into. Yet, Doyoung was silent after he finished speaking, after admitting the sin of his existence.
“Are you serious?” The feeling of his chest was rubbery and wet underneath my fingers, despite him looking completely dry. “How is this-“
“Why did you come to me?”
I looked up at his face. He was handsome, but not in the mysterious way that you would expect a mythical creature. Redness and scars peppered across his skin, eyes furrowed in human-like confusion, legs as long as sundown stretched for on this island. His hair was messy, lips tinted red, parted slightly as if he was really breathing. My hands ached to touch his face, but I held back, not wanting to fondle this random…male specimen I had literally just met any longer.
“You’re the girl of the Surface. Like in the stories.”
You squinted, the sun beating down mercilessly between your bare shoulder blades. Getting nervous ay once under his intense gaze, I toyed with the shell necklace around my neck, averting his gaze. “Um, thanks, I guess. But I’m just, well, I’m _.”
“Legend has it siren calls don’t work on you.” Doyoung kept speaking like a narrator in an old timey film, stating facts rather than working to keep a real conversation going. “You look really blurry all the time, but you seem to take on the form of a human female. A young adult one. In all the decades you’ve been here, no one has been able to take you to the seas. You’re an enigma. No one can figure you out.”
I paused, my brain refusing to accept any of this information, but my heart warmed with something gentle and forgiving.
Days and days and days later, I lay down on the sand with Doyoung for the first time.
He lay on top of me, and I hooked one arm around his neck, pulling his face near mine so he could kiss me. He did not. Instead, he rocked his hips against mine, and I felt his hard-on against my clothed core, making me whine. Pieces of sand travelled through strands of my hair, settling on my scalp.
Was this wrong?
He sank his teeth into my teeth, making me shake under him. Iron grip around my wrist and arm, he sucked and nipped the skin of my neck, and I cried out in pleasure. “Oh my god, don’t stop, p-please.” He groaned, his nose nestled into the crook of my neck. Letting go of one of my hands, he brought one between my legs, both of us working together to shrug off my bikini bottoms. Fingers nestled inside me all in one go with no warning, I felt the length of his fingers push against my sensitive walls. I bucked my hips upwards, involuntarily letting him travel knuckle deep inside me. When I climaxed, I dug my teeth into the salty skin of his neck. His eyes were closed the entire time.
“Is this wrong?” Ironically, even as he paused, his hard-on pressed urgently against me, as if answering for me. I shook my head, wanting to feel him inside me, wanting no more than to let my mind and body turn into jelly, to be overwhelmed by sensations akin to ones that made my world shake. I kissed him deeply, fingers digging into his scalp. Despite being so obviously turned on, and proceeding to fuck me at inhumane speeds for the next hour, Doyoung didn’t make a single noise the entire time after that.
You couldn’t stop reading, even as the clock on your bedside shone angrily. Beside you, your husband groaned. “Babe.” One hand was slung messily across his eyes, the sheets revealing a slip of stomach and leg as he shuffled, half asleep. “You’re not reading your diary again, are you?”
“Doie, it’s just so cute. I love reading how we met. And what we did.” You brought your face closer to Doyoung’s, his eyes now sharper, even in the dim lights of your shared bedroom. You made sure the moonlight hit the curve of your hips and ass as you moved to kneel next to him. From his lips to the skin of his face and torso, you watched his body breathe sleepily. So beautiful, you thought.
It had been five years since that day he had crawled out of the water and met you.
Now you were, as Doyoung would say, living life above the Surface, like commoners in a children’s story about witches or pirates. People who fell in love, got married, had babies, then lay to rest on Earth forever.
By some magic, Doyoung was no longer a siren.
But the thought that he might still be one, might still accidentally have trapped you all these years, haunt him.
As you felt Doyoung’s length fully sheath inside you, you frowned, moans spilling senselessly out of your mouth as you rode him. You knew him so well, physically, and emotionally. Leaning over, you kissed him over and over again, the sounds of your hips hitting his pelvis becoming louder as you tried to reach your high. “Shhh…baby…you’re perfect. ” A lone tear slid down his face as he stared into your eyes, as if they were endless voids and not the eyes of his beloved wife. He began to whimper, and the sound of him shaking as he came made you reach your high too, slumping over him as you heaved. “Fuck yes.” You noisily kissed him as your hips began to bounce again, making him throw his head back and moan loudly.
“H-how can this be real?” The ceiling was warping into swirls, and the air was getting hotter. The weight of your thighs that pressed against the sides of his hips were beginning to fade away, and he felt paralysed. Distant voices wafted into the room, as if a filter was suddenly being lifted. Someone shouting his name. He pressed his eyes closed, tight, his hips stuttering as he came down from his second high.
You were gone. But for some reason, he could still feel the smooth surface of the shell that hung from your neck tickle against his neck, as if you were still there on top of him.
“HYUNG!”
His eyes snapped open. He felt a rush of air. Someone sighing, their blurry figure materialising as he came to. “Fuck, you scared us!”
The sun bore down on his face, and Doyoung felt his skin burning under its unforgiving rays. Despite the ache that yelled angrily through his entire body, he sat up, now faced with the rest of his members. Taeyong squatted next to him, holding a cold waterbottle, droplets riding down the outside surface. “Here. Drink this.”
Johnny’s broad figure towered above him, still hazy, but as his face got closer, his voice became clearer. “Where did she go?”
Doyoung frowned, and Johnny matched his expression. Everyone was silent, Doyoung shakily responding. “What are you talking about?” Taeyong tapped him, bringing the bottle closer to his lips.
As the ice-cold liquid rushed down to his stomach, Doyoung was awash with a new sense of clarity. He physically shuddered, as hidden memories of the past five years came to light. His face dropped, his eyes filled with horror. “W-where is she? The girl?”
“As I said, she left after she saw me. It was strange…” Johnny paused, and then pressed his lips together, looking down. The others were silent, and Doyoung whipped his head to all of them. They were all holding back. “What is it?”
Taeyong rested one hand on Doyoung’s bare shoulder, making him flinch. Nodding apologetically, he continued. “She looked vastly different to all of us.”
Jaehyun scoffed, rolling his eyes. “I’m sure this is all an elaborate prank, Hyung. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”
“Hyung.” The maknae spoke, looking genuinely scared. Yuta patted him gently, as if silently agreeing with his next words. “Jaehyun-hyung saw Taeyong-hyung.”
“I wasn’t there, I swear.” Taeyong lifted both his hands up, his eyes watery and confused. “I swear to you guys.”
“Well, I saw Sarah. From my high school.”
“The girl that you lo-“ Doyoung stopped. Icicles formed in his stomach, the realisation making him sick. “Oh my god.”
“I saw Lavender, Doyoung.” He didn’t need that confirmation, but Taeyong’s voice was shaky now. “I saw her, clear as day. But…there was something off about her. I know this sounds crazy, but, she…she didn’t seem like herself.”
“But…whoever we saw,” Jaehyun still seemed skeptical, side-eyeing Johnny. “They all ran away after the first glance.”
Taeyong’s face was reddened by the harsh sun as Doyoung sat frozen in shock.
“Did she – or he – leave anything behind?”
As the words left his mouth, Doyoung’s hands were already inside the pocket of his pants. He let his fingers run over the shell in his pocket as the rest of the boys muttered their answers.
The words were becoming background noise, his thoughts all-encompassing, consuming him like water on a cold swim. He stood up, much to the surprise of the others. “I’m fine, guys. Meet you at the car? I’ll just be a few minutes.”
He would’ve found another way, even if his members hadn’t reluctantly left him that day at the beach. After all, you had left the necklace in his pocket for a reason. You loved him. You weren’t tricking him. You let him live because you loved him.
“Welcome home, baby.”
Right?
To you, the stories had always fascinated you. The people of the Surface, with their friendly songs and parties, and stupid, blind trust in things that looked like them.
Especially things that looked like desirable women.
It quickly became your life’s mission to have as many as you could, not to share, never…to share. No, this was all for yourself. Nobody else got the Surface like you did. Nobody could scan and hunt on dry land like you did. You were always one step ahead, always planning your next move. In fact, the cute little maknae on the beach today was next on your radar.
But Doyoung…Doyoung was so much fun.
And what is it that they always said?
Oh right.
You’re allowed to have a little bit of fun…until the song ends, of course.
The song was almost over for Doyoung. Despite everything, you were starting to feel…bad, something you had read about in human books. Guilt. You wanted to give him a chance, a chance to walk away, because he honestly seemed like a good human. But obviously, he liked you too much to forget so easily.
You forgot that humans could be naïve like that.
At least you tried. Now, as the sun set on the horizon, it was almost time to head home. You were quickly getting bored, and tired of singing for the day.

pleek perv/masseuse!haechan massaging oblivious y/n's tits or ass, saying it will relieve any tension or pressure and this is the treatment that all of his clients get,,,,, i cant stop thinking 💭💭💭
And then he tells you that you are truly one of his special clients, so only you get the real special treatment. And that's when his hands trail down even lower, dipping between your legs. That's when his lips trail down your neck, his kisses becoming heated. That's when you hear his voice dip down lower, rumbling in his throat ever so seductively, the customer service voice from before long gone. You spread your legs just a bit wider and he starts fingering you, one hand grabbing your ass to pry you open, the other dipping into your slick, wet centre. And he's already moaning at how you feel around his fingers, and you let out a sigh of pleasure as his fingers slide deeper and deeper inside you. He crooks his fingers and hits a spot that has your body jolting and a gasp escaping your lips, and he chuckles and keeps gently massaging the spot while you whine for him.

You wake up at 3am and Yuta isn’t back home. You’d always been suspicious of Yuta cheating and this was just adding to your suspicions. You go into the kitchen and start making an ice cream sundae.
As you're putting the ice cream in the bowl, Yuta walks through the door. “Hello my love” he says. You give him a straight face and turn away from him. He comes up and gives you a back hug. The warmth of his body feels good but you’re still mad at him.
“What’s wrong princess?” he says. “What were you doing out so late?” you reply. He grabs you and says “It’s nothing to be worried about sweetheart.” you push him away in disbelief. You say “Don’t play with me like that Yuta”.
He pulls you in by the waist and says “How do you want me to play with you then?” and he smirks. Although you are charmed, you can’t disregard the fact that he won’t tell you where he was. You push him off, grab your sandwich and head to the bedroom.
Yuta follows you and says “Come on princess, it’s not that big of a deal.” you look at him in awe and say “It is that big of a deal. I’m not just any girl. You can’t do me like that” he climbs on top and says “How about I do you like this then?”
He pins your arms down and starts kissing on your neck. He starts kissing all down your body. He pulls down your pants and says “Hmm, you seem pretty mad maybe this isn’t what you want.” he gets up and goes to the bathroom knowing that you want to let him do whatever he wants to your body.
He comes out of the bathroom and you tell him to come to you. He’s standing over you, you get on your knees and say “Daddy, I’m begging you please fuck me.” he already knew you would do this. He know exactly what you want. He smirks and says “Get on the bed we’re about to have a little fun with that pussy of yours.”
He walks to the kitchen and you get on the bed . He comes back but he’s hiding something. He comes over and says “Put this on” you look at it and its a blindfold. You put it on, and with no time wasted Yuta put his fingers inside your tight pussy. As hes fingering you, you feel something… cold on your clit.
You take the blindfold off to find that he put whipped cream on your clit. “Cream #1 for the night” he says laughing, he starts sucking the whipped off your clit. With him fingering plus sucking your clit you couldn’t help but moan. He goes faster and faster until finally you finish.
“Awwww the princess came already. Why don’t we make her cum again.” he says. He gets on top of you and spits in his hand wiping it all over his dick. He puts his rock hard dick in you. He takes the whip cream and put two dots on your boobs. Hes fucking you hard. You feel his dick all the way in your guts. You couldn’t believe how he’d been out all day and still had energy for this.
He bends down and says “Now isn’t this game fun princess?”
You nod your head yes and he says “I think it is too why don’t we have some more fun” he smirks. Yuta is known for having crazy ideas so you don’t know what hes gonna do.
He moves his hand around your throat and says “It’s time to have fun sweetheart.” while he starts going faster and deeper until you can’t take it anymore. You turn your head to him and say “Daddy please cum with me” he smiles and says “Look at the slut begging. I guess since you were a good girl for daddy I will”
He goes deeper again until hes throwing his head back and whimpering in pleasure. Finally, he pulls out and you turn and he squirts all of his hot cum into your mouth. He lifts your face up by your chin and kisses you. “Let’s go get cleaned up” he says. You both go to the bathroom.

THE END
I hope you enjoyed the story! Before I stopped writing I didn’t finish and post part 2 but if you all would like it then I will get right on it! Let me know and much love to you all! <3

“Yuta,” you said as you straddled your beautiful man. He dyed his hair blonde, giving him a new look that you weren’t used to. You couldn't lie, you absolutely loved the way it made him look. His dark hair was hot, but something about the blonde drove you wild. How you ended up with someone as handsome as him will always baffle you, but you won’t question it anymore, especially when you can feel his growing erection underneath you.
He looked up at you, smirking. “Yes, my love?” His big eyes bore into your own before they trailed down your body. He was looking at every curve, taking in every inch of you. His intense gaze was something that you had to get used to the longer you were with Yuta. It used to make you feel intimidated, but now you know that Yuta is harmless. His eyes did a lot of talking for him.
“I want you,” you whispered, leaning down to kiss him. His soft lips melted with yours as you slowly rocked your hips against him. Yuta had one hand on the back of your neck, while the other was on your hip, helping guide your movements. You weren’t usually on top of Yuta, he would always take control. You loved that he was more dominant in bed, but sometimes you wanted to have your man at your mercy.
You moaned into your kiss, moving your hips against him, his erection now straining against his pajama pants. You moaned feeling it rub against you, stimulating your covered center. Yuta smiled against your lips, liking how he could get such a reaction out of you without even being inside you yet. Yuta had a hold on you that no other man did and you loved every second of it. He had you wrapped around his finger. Usually, you would never give in to a man like this, but Yuta was different. He wasn’t controlling or anything like that, he just knew what he wanted. And what he wanted was you.
As much as you were having fun dry humping him, you also were getting needier. And feeling how hard he was wasn’t helping you either. You moved your hips again, but this time Yuta’s breathing hitched. You felt pleased with yourself so you removed yourself from him to take off your little shorts and panties. Following your lead, Yuta quickly removed his clothes. You still had on a cute little bralette that you liked to sleep in, but that was soon taken off as well. Yuta was still sitting up, wanting you back on top of him.
He took your waist in his hands and placed you back on his lap. You felt his cock teasing at your wet entrance and an idea popped into your head. Yuta was so good to you, that it was now his turn to be the one to receive pleasure. As much as you wanted to have his beautiful cock down your throat, you wanted to try something else you had heard about. Yuta loved trying new things, so why not surprise him?
You wet your hand before taking his cock in your hand and jerking him slowly. He looked at you with questioning eyes, wondering what your next move was. He watched you closely and you were almost scared to do this, but you didn’t want to stop. You wanted to make your man feel as good as he would make you feel. This would benefit you also, so you really wanted to do it. You leaned down to kiss him, his plump lips tasted so sweet.
You moaned when you positioned yourself so that the tip of his cock was on your clit, rubbing against you slowly. Yuta wasn’t sure what you were doing, but he wasn’t going to stop you any time soon. You held his cock in place as you moved your hips against him, not daring to put him inside you just yet. You always liked it when he would slide his cock against you before you would fuck, so you wanted to keep that feeling. You jerked him off as you moved your hips against him. His tip was on your entrance and collecting your wetness so that it was easy to rub your clit. You both were enjoying this a little too much.
Yuta had always wanted to try this, but both of you would either become too needy to do it or he would give you head. Yuta wasn’t the type to want to be teased like this, but this had felt too good to stop you. Your hand had stopped stroking him so that you could focus on having him slide against your folds. Your breathing had become uneven when you positioned yourself to only stick the tip in you. Yuta tried to thrust into you, but you pulled yourself off him. “Uh uh, Yuta. That’s not how this works,”
Frustrated, Yuta’s grip on your hips had tightened. You knew he’d leave crescent shaped marks on your skin from his black nails, and it excited you. You went back to bucking your hips against his cock, your wetness now made him slick and it made it easy for you to keep up what you were doing. He groaned when your thumb teased his now swollen tip. Your thumb was now on his slit before rubbing it on your clit again. “Yuta,” you moaned out as the intense teasing was almost becoming too much. You wanted to hold off on him fucking you a little bit longer; you were having a little too much fun being in control for once.
You decided to slip his tip in one more time, swirling your hips around him. At this point, Yuta had had enough. “Baby if you don’t let me fuck you right now, I won’t let you cum tonight.” You knew he was serious. The last time you teased him like this, only he came and you were horny for days. You liked being a brat with him, but sometimes it wasn’t worth it.
You pulled yourself off of him once more, his cock in your hand and his head against your clit. You moved it slowly, before leaning down and whispering, “Fuck me, Daddy,”
You didn’t need anything else before he flipped you onto your back, your legs spread for him and his throbbing cock at your entrance. He stroked himself on you again, giving you the same treatment you gave him earlier. His head teased your clit. “Beg,” he said, looking down at your body.
“What?”
“You heard me, babydoll. Beg for it.”
You wanted to say no and be a brat, but you were too horny to want to fight him. “Please fuck me, Yuta. I need your big cock to make me feel good!” You whined, hoping it was enough.
“Try again, pretty girl.” Another thrust against you, but not in you. “You know what I want,”
You huffed, just wanting him to fuck you deep. “Daddy, please! I need you to fuck me so hard I don’t know my own name!”
His beautiful face was now twisted into a devious one. “Good girl,” then he thrust himself inside you, making you scream at the sudden feeling. His hips were relentless as he fucked you into the bed. Yuta was positioned on his knees, his hands holding your waist tightly as he railed into you. You couldn’t stop moaning when he went in deeper, his cockhead hitting your spot over and over. You were so turned on by your earlier teasing, that you knew you wouldn’t be able to hold out much longer. Yuta knew it too.
His hips were harsh; he didn’t like when you would tease him. He was the one who was supposed to tease you. He slowed down his hips and you whimpered, wanting him to keep up his fast pace since you were so close to your orgasm. “Daddy,” you whined.
He chuckled, “Look at you, all fucked out and begging for my cock. You’re close to cumming, aren’t you?” He was still inside you, not daring to move. You nodded your head quickly, but you knew if you were to move your hips, he’d stop. You couldn't even believe how this turned out. Though, you’d be lying if you said you didn’t want this.
“Please, I’m so close.” He started to move slowly, rocking his hips against yours. You looked at him, a sheen of sweat glistening on his beautiful body; his tattoos and belly button piercing shining in the dim light of your shared bedroom. God, he was gorgeous.
“What was that?” He teased. You knew what he wanted and you just wanted to cum already.
“Daddy! Please make me cum! I don’t want to be able to walk tomorrow!” And that was enough to make him go back to giving you a hard fuck.
He moved his hips hard and fast, everything you wanted him to do. Both of you were so close to your highs. Yuta had moved one of his hands down to your clit and he rubbed it harshly with his thrusts. You screamed and before you knew it, the pleasure had become too much and your orgasm took over. You came around his cock, clenching on his length.
Yuta’s hips were losing their rhythm before his own orgasm was triggered. He groaned deeply before he pulled out of you to pump his cock a few times. His hot cum landed on your stomach, making you giggle. You were his little fuck doll and you couldn’t be happier.
He collapsed next to you, kissing your lips softly as he caught his breath. The contrast of his soft kiss was amusing to you, but you held that in. “Don’t be a brat again,” he said and you giggled.
You shook your head. “I can’t make any promises.”

ARCANE : INIZIO | CH.6 | NCT DREAM X READER
Summary: When human deviants granted with the abilities of the legendary Arcana cards find themselves racing against devious forces, they are left to make a choice that might change the fate of the world itself: be the victims of the game, or become the masters of it themselves.
But will this war end with a crowned hero?
Or will it just create another mad villain?
*****
Note: This is the second book of Arcane. The happenings in this story is a prequel to the first installment which you can check in my Masterlist. Since the lore is highly dependent on the first book, I highly suggest you check it out first—otherwise, new readers might have a hard time understanding what is happening here. Expect lots of time jumps and flashbacks throughout the chapters.
Pairings: Dream 00’ Line + Mark x Reader
Trigger Warnings/Themes: romance, violence, torture, trauma, poly dynamics, suggestive themes, language, psychological, mystery, sci-fi. The concept of the tarot or Arcana cards will be loosely used throughout the series. Note that I am not a trained doctor so there may be some slips here and there about medical things. Again, this is a work of fiction and I am not implying any likeness between the characterization here of the boys to their real life counterparts. I also reserve the rights to all my work—I do not post anywhere else other than tumblr. Minors DNI. Please do not repost. I only publish my works in Tumblr.

In the beginning, there was everything and nothing.
Quod est superius est sicut quod inferius, et quod inferius est sicut quod est superius.
That which is above is like to that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above.
Harmony and equilibrium is the great thread that runs through the universe, and the very same law that keeps the aether, the nether, and the mundane world coexist peacefully with each other. For billions of years since the dawn of existence, humanity prospered in between the world above and the underworld, supported by opposing life forces necessary to keep the universe from tipping over. For centuries, there was peace, until a great shift started unraveling the fabric of the three worlds.
Greed. Pride. Lust. Gluttony. Envy. Sloth. Wrath.
As human consciousness grew, so did their desire for more festered. Kingdoms were created at the expense of tearing apart lands, wars were waged for vainglory, and lives were traded in exchange for earthly pleasures. As darkness threatened to tip the great balance of the three worlds, heavenly and nether forces were forced to work together to keep the universe from losing its equilibrium. Where the three dimensions once co-existed separately before, the greater powers threaded in the greater cosmos lent parts of their forces to the mundane world to try and keep its balance.
And thus, the twenty-two Arcana powers were born.
Each heavenly and infernal force chose its human stewards, vessels who can wield the energies of aether and nether in the mortal realm. The powers were neither good nor bad, but the first Grandmasters—and their succeeding bloodline—were given a task that they will have to carry along for as long as humanity exists: keep the equilibrium in the mundane world and protect it with their lives.
The powers are divided into three classes, the same way the universe is with its three dimensions.
The First Class: The Knights. Arcana masters whose abilities can bend matter and elements to affect the physical realm.
The Second Class: The Oracles. Arcana masters who have control over the subconscious, the psychic, and the ethereal.
The Third Class: The Triad. The holders of the last three pillars of the Arcana. Alone and separated from the bloodline, they are powerless, but together with the great system, they are the only ones who can tap into the abilities of the other masters.
For decades, the bloodline grew and prospered as new masters were born every generation. While the Family's existence is kept a secret from the greater mundane world, its members prospered and made their marks known in society as its secret vanguards. Kings, Queens, Inventors, and Great Artists, the force of the secret brotherhood was threaded and felt throughout the course of humanity. Wars were won and some battles were lost, but one thing remained the same. Regardless of the battle, the Grandmasters are here to protect the balance of the universe.
And so it begins, once again.
******* "Make one wrong move and you lose your head."
You turned around, not in fear of the words that managed to break through the mundane talk over at your breakfast table, but because of the familiar voice that said it. Beside you, Renjun, Haechan, Jisung, Chenle, and Jaemin also did the same, their expressions changing as their eyes landed on the group now smiling at your lot. You gasped the same time the boys made their own expressions of surprise, some even jumping from their seats.
"Johnny-hyung!"
"Woah, Jaehyun-hyung and Yuta-hyung—"
"Taeil-oppa?”
"Hey, kids. What's up?"
The tallest of the group, a man with black hair that fell over to his eyes, gave your table a wink before reaching over to ruffle Haechan's hair. Everyone was still pretty much stunned by what was happening that Ten's amused laughter had to pierce through the ruckus to bring you all back to focus.
"I told them they can all see you later after classes but these losers had to force their way in here to make a scene. I guess the cat's out of the bag then. We have visitors."
"You're talking as if we didn't just graduate here a couple of years ago," a guy standing by his side with a playful smile nodded over to him, his eyes sparkling. "Is that what being a teacher does? You used to run around with us and do—"
"Shut the fuck up, Yuta. And I'm not a teacher here, I'm the Academy's doctor. Kun is the one who ended up with the boring job."
"I'd love to call it boring, but I think it's actually pretty cool. You saw their breakfast buffet? Do teachers also get that now?" A shorter guy with close-cropped hair motioned towards the half-finished plates on your table. Taeil gave you all a small smile seeing the still stunned look on your faces.
"You all look like you're seeing ghosts," Johnny teased as he plopped on the vacant seat next to you. With a big grin, he draped an arm over you and pulled you into a half hug that almost cut off your air supply.
"Hi, Princess. You've grown up, haven't you? You still single?"
You couldn't see anything while being smothered by the bear of a man, but you heard Haechan clearly from somewhere across the table.
"Yah, hyung!"
"Uh-huh, I think she is still single."
“Yep. Definitely still single.”
Another voice chimed in, sounding extremely amused. You were on the verge of protesting when Johnny finally let you go with a laugh. You pulled away, a little disgruntled, and came face to face with a chuckling Jaehyun across from you.
"What are you all doing here?" You finally managed to ask, your tone a little disgruntled as you tried to straighten your hair that Johnny managed to mess up. A few of the other students still lingering for breakfast threw you looks from the other tables, gawking at the newcomers. Not that you can blame them. For the general student body, this group had a reputation as the ringleaders of the Academy in their heyday.
For you and the rest though... It’s a little bit more complicated.
After all, there is just no way it is plain coincidence to have the strongest Arcana Masters back in Rosewood.
In terms of control and maturity of abilities—and unlike the current masters enrolled as students—the earlier batch of Arcana masters are at the apex of the current generation of ability holders. Their powers have matured enough to be at their full potential after years of training and practice. If this were a battle, they would be considered the war generals—and seeing who is at Rosewood at this very moment can in no way be lacking of any significant meaning.
Johnny, Master of the Justice. Arcana Number: 08. One of the most physically strong in the family, his position is at the forefront of battle, not because of his sheer prowess in fighting alone, but due to the nature of his power. Ability: Karmic Manipulation. Whatever's done to him, he can cast tenfold of it back to its wielder by mere compulsion alone.
Jaehyun, Master of the Tower. Arcana Number: 16. He stands next to Johnny in the line of fire, being the human embodiment of carnage itself. Ability: Destruction Magic. Jaehyun has the power to shift energies to destroy everything on his path, including their life force so that they are totally erased from the cycle of the universe, never to be reincarnated again.
Yuta, Master of the Hanged Man. Arcana Number: 12. Another ace of the family, Yuta is one of the few members whose power can be projected to the outside world and to himself. Ability: Gravitational Manipulation. He can control the physical laws of gravity to his advantage, allowing him to also be the only member to have the ability of flight.
Taeil, Master of the Hermit. Arcana Number: 9. Though not a physical caster, his powers are probably one of the most terrifying among the Oracle class. Ability: Nightmare Inducement. He can get in anyone's head to know their greatest fears and project them to the physical world.
Ten, Master of the Chariot. Arcana Number: 7. He rarely uses his powers because they can affect the fabric of destiny alone. Ability: Space-Time Manipulation. The lord of time himself, he can jump through different dimensions and locations at will.
"Can't an alumni visit their home school?" Johnny asked back, his tone light. You exchanged a quick glance with Jaemin and Renjun beside you.
"Aren't you supposed to get married next month, hyung?" Chenle asked politely but pointedly. It was brief, but Johnny's friendly smile slipped ever so slightly before he caught himself again. For once, he actually seemed like he didn't have any answer to shoot back.
"Masters just can't go back any time they want to… We are all meant to go somewhere to watch over things after leaving Rosewood. Aren't you working for the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, Jaehyun-hyung?" Renjun said next.
"I'm pretty sure you don't get a lot of vacations there to spend for a quick school visit," Jaemin trailed off to drive the point across.
If the group wasn't obvious earlier at least for the clueless, they certainly are now with the way they exchanged looks. Ten looks like he was on the verge of breaking when another trio caught all of your attention as they strolled towards you. Your eyes rounded in surprise when you recognized their faces.
"Taeyong-hyung," Jisung voiced out the man's name who was currently flanked by Kun and another girl whose face you know so well. What on earth has your father done this time?
"I thought we agreed to talk to all of them together?" Kun frowned at Ten who gave him an exasperated shrug.
"They never listened to rules as students, do you really think that has improved now?"
"Sorry for barging in. Are these guys bothering you?" Taeyong asked, his eyes kind as usual as he regarded all of you. It's been a couple of years since you've last seen him since he graduated, but you realized that the former Head Boy and well-known Legacy in the family has retained his kindness until now. Taeyong, like Kun, is a member of the bloodline but lacked any powers, but that hasn't stopped him from playing a pivotal role in the clan. While Kun stayed at Rosewood to defend it should something happen, Taeyong was sent to fight for it and protect it from a distance. The duty given to them is what earned the pair the title of this generation's Ace of Shield and Ace of Sword.
"Taeyong-oppa… You're also here," you trailed off before your gaze unwittingly slipped towards the girl standing by his side. She looked like she didn't want to impose her presence, but you couldn't stop yourself, not when you know her face all too well.
"And you… Mijeong?"
Her head jerked and she looked at you wide-eyed as you called out her name. Despite the strangeness of the situation, your lips slightly twitched into a knowing smile.
"You remember my name?"
"We were classmates at Advanced Psychology. And you've also been watching over me since I joined the University. I hope my father didn't force you to do it."
If she looked surprised earlier, then Mijeong definitely seemed shell-shocked now. Beside her, Taeyong raised his brow curiously before glancing at Kun who looked like he was trying his best not to smile.
"You, you've always known that I—"
"Was tasked to guard me? Yes. I wouldn't think too much about it though. You're really good, but I've also spent my whole life living with my father's schemes."
"I guess she wouldn't need too much introduction then if that is the case. Kim Mijeong, she's the master of The Strength and—" Taeyong started before he was cut off by a flash of silver darting from out of nowhere past him. The movement was too quick for all of you to notice, but the next thing you saw was the butter knife safely tucked between Mijeong's middle and forefinger. The girl raised her eyebrow before twirling the blade casually in her hand.
"Yuta… Can you please not do that?" Taeyong asked with a sigh. The boy in question smirked, his eyes set on the other Master.
"When they said La Fuerza is from the Kim clan, I didn't expect it to be the little sister. I had to check if she’s good since that family thinks they're too good for Rosewood," Yuta said, his eyes dancing. Mijeong returned the snark by staring him down.
"We have a different training as the working guards of the family. I don't think it's such a bad idea to skip the Academy too if it means we get spared from mingling with douchebags like you," she snapped back smoothly before making a show of making one last twirl of the  blade in her palm before closing her fist around it. The lot of you watched, jaw slacked, as she easily folded and bent the metal in her hand like it was a piece of paper. The next second, she was flinging it back to Yuta's direction with a flick of her wrist. The now crumpled clump of metal stopped just a few inches from hitting the other in the face as he stopped it with gravity.
Chenle gave a low whistle, impressed by the show. Kun, however, looks like he was done with the exchange.
"Okay, can we just stop throwing blades at each other for a moment? It's 9AM."
"Yes, which makes it the perfect time for you guys to answer our question. I'm afraid even this isn't enough to distract us," you added before giving the newcomers a pointed look. Taeyong gave you a slightly guilty smile before touching the back of his head.
"Your father invited us for a little bit of help. We don't think we will be here for a long time though, don't worry. I think he just has a few things he wants to try."
The way you and Haechan looked at each other at the same time told you one thing. He’s not lying, but he’s definitely not telling the whole truth either. If there's one thing you all know about Taeyong, it's his talent to make the worst of things sound like a frolic in the garden.
"When you say a few things he wants to try…" Haechan asked, prodding for more.
"A few… classes specifically. And drills," Kun was the one who answered this time. Silence dropped on your table, thick and loaded with meaning. The next one who broke it was the most unexpected of all.
"Is something happening? If there is, I think we have a right to know about it," Jisung said, his voice still polite but steady. Several pairs of eyes swiveled towards him, surprised by the youngest’s comment. You could almost physically touch the lingering guilt from his older brothers before Taeyong finally sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"We want to tell you, but the Headmaster hasn't given us a lot of information either. He called us back to protect Rosewood against attacks—from who, I doubt he knows himself—and to prepare everyone. Especially you kids."
"What does that mean?" Chenle asked, confused. "All of us got calls from our families yesterday. They said we might leave the Academy temporarily."
"Not until you finish your training," Jaehyun said as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"Training? With who?" Jaemin replied.
"With us." Johnny answered as he finally picked himself up from his seat. You and the others froze, not expecting his answer. Nobody needed to say anything for all of you to piece together what’s happening.
The seniors are not only here to protect the Academy, but to prepare all of you for a bigger war.
"We're officially making an announcement later but since you're all here…" Kun started, looking at each of you. "The rest of the student body will be sent back to their homes today. Regular classes are indefinitely postponed to make way for drills which will start tomorrow."
"All Knights class will be divided into groups and will be trained under Johnny, Jaehyun, Yuta, and Mijeong. The Oracles will be assigned to Taeil and Ten. Taeyong and I will be moderating everything."
"And the Triads?" You asked, causing Kun to stop. He looked unsure of what to tell you, but you didn't waver, keeping your eyes steady on him for an answer.
"I think you need to talk to your father first..."
Your hands balled into fists under the table. You haven't talked to the man again again since your confrontation at his office, but the fact that he didn't include you in any of his plans does not mean anything good. You kept silent now, however, knowing that you should be more careful of your actions.
"You can all go back to the dormitories now. We'll just call you again once everything is ready. I suggest you just… relax today," Taeyong said before looking at the other newcomers to signal them to leave. You all watched quietly as the group picked themselves up and bid you their goodbyes.
Renjun was the first one to talk once everyone was out of the door.
"What's going to happen now…?" He asked quietly. Haechan dropped again to his seat, looking as worried as the rest of you.
"Training under those beasts? We're going to die. That's what's going to happen. We're going to fucking die."
******* "Get up. We need to go."
Jaemin opened his eyes and gave you an unbothered glance the moment you locked the door behind you. He looked unsurprised by your sudden barging in, a look of mild curiosity tracing his features as you started pacing in his room. He remained unmoving from his spot on the bed even as you finally turned to him, gnawing at nail on your thumb.
"What exactly are we up to today?" He asked mildly, raising his brows at you in question. You paused, not knowing how to best phrase the answer.
"We're ransacking my father's office."
The silence that followed was almost painful. You winced, expecting the worst reaction.
"You've absolutely gone mad, noona."
Your shoulders slumped at his reply. He is right. You've reached the point of being batshit crazy this time, but you're also desperate, and time is not necessarily on your side.
"Look, I need to do something. There is no way Papa will tell us anything so we need to find our own answers. This is the only time that we have. I checked. He left the Academy again so his office is free," you paused before finally staring at him. "Will you help me?"
It took him a bit to answer. The truth is, when it comes to things like this, he is the only other person you could trust to have your back. Mark is too straight-laced to try and do something like this—that and the fact that he still refuses to talk to you—and Jeno... Jeno would be another good option too if only he hasn’t been avoiding you as well. The rest, you didn’t want to drag into trouble in case you get busted. You didn't realize that you've been holding your breath until Jaemin finally sighed and started picking himself up from his bed.
"They say I'm the devil, but you're actually more dangerous. Don’t play innocent, you already know my answer when it comes to you," he said as he straightened his clothes. You tried your best to hold back your grin from showing.
"You can say no, you know," you quipped as you both headed to the door. He easily opened it and motioned for you to lead the way.
"When I can ask for a payment for this favor? I don't think so. Lead the way, love. We have some sleuthing to do."
******* "So, what exactly are we looking for?" Jaemin asked as he went through the stacks of books in your father's shelves. The room was dim with only one small fluorescent lamp that you decided to open and you squinted in the dark as you flipped through the folders on his desk.
"I don't know… Anything that can give us a clue. He told me that the Kims alerted him about people trying to pass through the barriers of Rosewood a couple of months ago. I don't believe he hasn’t been working on getting any leads since he found out about it."
At your words, Jaemin froze on his spot and slowly turned to look at you. You returned his gaze knowingly as you closed another folder and placed it back to its pile.
"People? You mean—"
"Humans… Mundanes who aren't part of the bloodline," you muttered grimly. This is the first time you've shared the information to any of them since your talk with your father. You figured this is the best time to give him an idea, given everything that has happened in just a span of a few days.
"But how—" he paused, his face strained. "Is this what this is all about then? Whatever it is that we are preparing for, it's against the humans?"
"Not just any group of humans, I guess. Someone powerful, or else they wouldn't have much influence to pull something as big as this. That's what we need to find out. Whoever wants to steal the Arcana powers."
"So this isn't really a fight but a hunt. That's why our parents are asking us to leave and why Jaehyun-hyung and the others are going to be training us. We're running away and being taught to defend ourselves."
You didn't immediately answer, though the look on your face was enough of a confirmation for him. The truth is, you still do not want to follow the path your father is drawing up for everyone. Escaping is the most logical course of action, but it can also start a cycle that none of you might be able to break. If you run now, you'll be looking at your backs and living in fear forever.
"Is that why he is also marrying you off to Mark-hyung?"
His question was not surprising, but it still definitely made you pause. Ever since your father told you about the arrangement, you haven't really talked to anyone about it, Mark included. After your talk, you are convinced he was trying to stay away from you as much as he can—and for that, you couldn't really blame him.
"It was a discussion between him and Mark's father. None of us said yes to it," you said, shifting your eyes away from him and continuing to sift through the other files on your father's desk. Jaemin was quiet, but you could feel his stare heavily on your skin.
"I think you know what his answer will be given the choice. The question is, do you want to marry him?"
This time, you felt your heart clench.
"I don't want to marry anyone for convenience."
Jaemin's loaded pause was so palpable you almost wanted to escape him.
"You love him. You can fool anyone, but not me. You've always loved him."
"If you're so good about reading me, then you should also know the reason why I can't be with him," you said as you finally met his gaze steadily. The light from the lamp threw shadows over the curves of his face from where he stood, but it was the look in his eyes that spoke the words none of you wanted to speak out.
You didn't know when it happened, but as you grew up, both Jaemin and you somehow came upon a silent agreement never to talk about things like this. It wasn't needed, because you both know where you stand in each other's lives. It was a silent dance, one that both of you were content in doing for as long as it could work. He never rocked that boat, but as you looked at him now, you were also gripped by the sudden fear of that world slowly being tipped over.
"It is the right choice…" he said slowly, almost as if he was forcing the words out of his lips. "If the humans are after us, that means there is a traitor in the family. The Masters will be vulnerable, especially you and your father. Mark-hyung's family… You can either be a part of them, or have them as your number one enemy."
"Do you want me to marry him, Jaemin?"
This time it was him who stopped. His expression didn't falter, though you noticed the way his jaw slightly ticked as if he was trying to control himself.
"If my family can give you the same protection that his can, then believe me, I would have whisked you away by now and married you on the spot."
You took a slow breath in at his answer.
"You can’t say that. You know that I—  "
"Love me just as much as you do him, Jeno, Renjun, and Haechan? I've personally never had any problem with that. I think you know that by now. I want you. I don't care whatever else comes with that."
To say that you weren't ready for this conversation was understating it. Jaemin had always been safe, that one person you knew would always have your back without really losing sight of what should and shouldn't be done. Right now though, he is making you look at things that you aren’t ready for yet.
You were so lost in your thoughts that you didn't notice him crossing the distance to where you were seated. The next thing you felt was warmth touching your cold cheeks as he ever so gently tipped your face to look at him. The way he held you and the look in his eyes almost made you want to fold into yourself.
"Tell me what's on your mind… You're hurting…" he whispered as he started gently running his hand over the corner of your eye.
"I wish you didn't know me so much."
He smiled.
"IL Matto or not, you can't run away from me when it comes to that, love."
It took you a moment to answer again. After a few more heartbeats, you finally stood up and walked towards the center of the room, as if putting distance between the two of you would somehow lessen the impact of your words.
"I don't think I will be living long enough to marry anyone, Jaemin," you started, voice low enough only for him to hear. His eyes slowly widened and you avoided his gaze to not see the realization there.
"It hasn't been part of my plan. Ever. I don’t want to stay here for a long time. How can you live in fear knowing that you can turn mad one day and just lose everything? It's terrifying."
"You're not going to—"
"I will. In time," you cut him off before he could even finish. "Papa knows it and I know you do, too. I can feel it. It will happen one way or another. It’s the curse of IL Matto."
He was quiet. For the first time, he actually let his emotions run free as he stared at you. You could see the gears working in his head and you gave him a small smile as you watched him piece things together.
"You want to fight," he said lowly. “You’re going to go against your father’s plans.”
"Yes. Somebody had to stand up to him. I don’t want to run. I want to try to fix things while I still can.”
He was about to say something again when a sudden beeping rang through the room. You both turned to the phone on your father's desk, it's red light beeping from the incoming call. You were still both frozen on your spots when the ringing finally stopped and the system switched to voice mail.
"Sir, we're done trying to process the specimen that we got from the night you were attacked. The men were using unknown technology that was unlabeled but we traced some of the scraps we got from the site and made a successful match. We have a name now."
Both you and Jaemin stared at each other, faces pale. Your heart was beating so loud against your chest that you thought you wouldn't hear the unknown man's next words.
"It's Cypher Institute."
******* "I'm surprised that you're actually the one who showed up today. I thought you were making sure to keep things under the radar."
The lilting, almost amused voice of the woman felt like thin ice needles slowly sinking into his skin. The private room's lighting was dim, but even the lack of proper illumination didn't tarnish the deep red lips that now tilted into a mirthless smile across from him. Everything about her looked cold, almost to the point of artificial perfection, and that's coming from a man who is also known for icyness himself.
"A show of faith to this unlikely partnership, if I must say. I didn't want you to think I might stab you on the back," he answered back just as smoothly, his expression never-changing. The woman's smile widened, showing perfect white teeth.
"Now, now. I think you don’t have too much faith on us. Why would I think that, after all that you've done for us…?"
"Junho Lee."
The mention of his name almost made him flinch. As one of the most prominent members of the Arcana bloodline, he does have an ability of sensing energies of others. This woman might be powerless—a regular human—but what she has is something more sinister than any of the ancient powers above and below.
Unadulterated greed.
And madness.
"I want to personally have your word about our arrangement," he said stiffly, his cold gaze unwavering on her. She merely turned her head a little to the side in mild interest.
"Mm… Is this the one about your son? Feel free to be specific. The consequences of your betrayal run deep after all."
Her use of words finally shook his facade. His fists closed in response, an action she did not miss from the way her eyes lit up with amusement. When Junho Lee signed up to this agreement, he knew he was permanently damaging his sacred ties to the Family. Playing with fire was part of the game, but he did not expect to be against the Devil herself.
"I need your word that my son will be unharmed once all of this is over and done. I don't care whatever else you do, but Mark stays safe."
"Of course. Is that all?"
He paused. The woman’s expression didn’t change but something about the way she looked at him told him that she was probing for... more. Junho knew this time will come when he will be asked to make a choice, but that didn’t make the process any easier now that he is finally at the crossroads.
When he decided to sell his soul to Cypher, he only had one goal. To make the man who was behind the death of his wife suffer. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. IL Giudizio allowed his own wife to go mad and wreak havoc on others, resulting on the death of a whole generation of Masters. He was the reason why his family was ruined and why Mark's mother was ripped away from him. The man deserves to suffer, his family included, and yet… he couldn't bring himself to betray his daughter to the Institute. While he has no trace of care for the current IL Matto, he knew—from the way his son looks at her—that she is one he is willing to burn the world for; the same way he is doing now for his own lost love.
Mark already lost his mother. He can't bear to rip the last woman he loves from him too. For that, he is willing to spare some souls.
"Yes. Just him. You can do whatever it is that you want with the other Masters."
"Ah… how cruel. To think that your family used to be the number one trusted clan of the whole bloodline itself. Who would have thought that you would be the one to send them to the slaughterhouse yourself."
"I am loyal to no one and nothing but power."
The woman paused, her smile frozen in her lips. Her vision was one of the most terrifyingly beautiful things he's ever seen, her eyes piercing… still probing.
"One last question then," she said slowly, deliberately. His facade never changed despite the cold starting to gnaw at him from the insides.
"Who is IL Matto?"
"I do not know. IL Giudizio considers me as his closest confidante and trusted ally, but not enough for him to betray the last member of the Triad even to me. If you want to look for the last Master, you'll have to torture it out of his own lips."
He delivered his answer so smoothly and so effortlessly that he could have fooled anyone with his lie. But this woman is evil incarnate herself, and for that he had to work harder. It felt like having a stare off with a beast waiting for its prey to blink and show any weakness. He didn't waver though until finally, she smiled at him once more.
"I see. If that's the case, then you have our promise. Your son will be spared. But only if you deliver your end of the bargain. Time is running out and I am growing bored."
"Bring IL Giudizio to Cypher."
Junho took that as a cue for him to finally stand up and leave. Straightening his coat, he gave her a look that could rival her ice.
"One of my men will give you a call once everything is ready. Tell IL Mondo... I send my regards."
Miyoung’s smile sharpened at the edges as she followed the man's retreating back until it disappeared out of the room. Her soft voice lingered in the air, an echo of the closing of the door.
"Let the games begin."

Talking to Death
Tumblr media
Pairing: Newly-Dead!Jeong Jaehyun x Female Reader
Preview: Missing someone who's dead? Talk to them now!
Is there someone who has passed away that you miss dearly? Well, you can talk to them now! Call the number below!
xxx-xxx-xxxx
Just remember to interact with friends and family outside of speaking with your departure and don’t crowd and overwhelm your departure as they adapt to their new surroundings. This stage is new for everyone.
Word Count: 6.8k
Genre: Tim Burton-esque (?), Fantasy, Non-Idol AU, Horror
Warnings: Jaehyun’s dead from the start, fluff, angst, mentions of self-harm (but can be easily missed), mentions of suicide (also can be easily missed), passing out/fainting, blood, cleaning a wound, main character death, suicide (this one isn’t easy to miss), not 100% proofread.
a/n- This idea randomly came to me in a dream, but I hope you enjoy this little twisted reality. Also, sorry that the last two fics have ended with death and not really happy endings, the next couple of fics I have planned out do have happy endings. And there is unfortunately repetition of some words, like I just used those words too often, but I hope it isn’t too bad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"My condolences". You didn't know who he was, but he was here for Jaehyun. You didn't know any of these people except for his close family and friends. But it didn’t matter whether you did or didn't know them, every single one came up to you expressing their sorrow.
The service was lovely, the walls of the funeral home were between the color of oatmeal and bone white, and the flowers were roses, even though they symbolize love, and not death, Jaehyun claimed that he loved them. Every single pew in the entire room was filled, even with people standing in the back, and there were still people in random places of the home.
At the front of the room to the left, people surrounded a table that held several photos of him, and each photo had a paragraph that explained what that specific part of his life was about, and there were even more people to the right of the table, which is where he was. It was obvious that he was loved by many, yet he chose to love you and only you.
You hadn’t realized that everyone had sat down in their designated seat until Jaehyun’s mom came to your side. “Y/n, honey, it’s time for us to sit down. There’s an open seat next to me for you.” You let her take your arm to lead you to said seat.
The warmth of Jaehyun’s mother’s hand on your arm didn’t last long, because as soon as she sat you down, she went up to the podium that was between the table that showed the timeline of her son’s life, and her son himself.
He looked so peaceful; you would've thought he was asleep if it weren't for the current circumstances. It was an open casket; you don’t know if you’re glad it was or if you wish it was closed. With it being closed, you wouldn’t be able to see him at all, but with being able to see him, it’s just proof that he’s truly gone. You’ll never be able to see him, kiss him, hold him, or talk to him after today.
“Thank you everyone for coming. Jaehyun would’ve be glad that you all came.” As soon as she used Jaehyun’s name in the past tense is when she started crying. You didn’t notice that that was the end of her eulogy until she stepped down from the podium and came back to her seat next to you. “It’s your turn sweetie.” She gave you a small smile and nodded her head slightly to the podium.
With legs you thought were going to buckle at any moment, you got up and slowly made your way to the podium. You knew that there were a lot of people there, but it wasn’t until you finally looked up and out into the room to see all the people looking at you. Normally, whenever you had to give speeches in front of a lot of people, Jaehyun was always somewhere in the front, smiling from ear to ear, showing off his dimples, and giving you two thumbs up. But Jaehyun was next to you now, though he wasn’t smiling or whispering to the person next to him saying “that’s the love of my life”, while proudly pointing at you.
You didn’t want to look at him because you knew that if you looked for too long, all you could do was start crying, however, you couldn’t tear your eyes off of him. “Jung Jaehyun was the love of my life. And I’m not sure what else to say, he was and still is, in simple terms, everything to me. He was my boyfriend and my best friend all in one. I wanted to grow old with him, we talked about it, all the time. Getting married, having kids, living our lives with the other by our side. I can’t even think about what I’m going to do now that he’s gone.” Your words were no longer audible, muted by sniffles and sobs.
“Hey Y/n, let’s go sit down, yeah? Or we can go outside and get some fresh air if you would like to. Whatever you want.” Johnny, one of Jaehyun’s best friends had gotten up from his seat to try and coax you off the podium. “I want Jae.” Johnny just sighed and took your arm, much like Jaehyun’s mother had done, and led you out of the room.
Your cries got louder, and you started to lose the ability to breath. You were gasping for air, the feeling of drowning taking over your body, leading you to the ground. Johnny hadn’t gone back in, scared to leave your side, he sat down next to you. He lightly rubbed your back as you stained his suit jacket with drops of watered-down mascara.
 You couldn’t decide if the day drug on or flew by. Maybe both if that was possible. It seemed as if the day itself flew by, but the minutes seemed to never end. With time not seeming to work right, all the crying, and everyone coming to talk to you, a headache formed, and you just wanted Jaehyun back.
 Normally when you had a headache, Jaehyun would rub your temples and to help you fall asleep, he would lightly trace your facial features, your eyelids, nose, lips, and that always seemed to work because the next thing you knew was that you were walking up the next day.
 Before you knew it, you heard Johnny getting up beside you. “I have to go help carry Jaehyun, the burial is about to start, I’ll come stand by you during it, but Jae’s mom is going to come walk with you.”
 Johnny went back inside but Jaehyun’s mom quickly filled the now empty space beside you. Without saying anything she helped you stand up and caught up with the group that started to head over to the empty hole in the ground.
 “I don’t want them to put him in there. They need to leave him alone. I don’t want him to be gone.” You rested your head on Jaehyun’s mother’s shoulder and quietly blubbered in her ear. “I know Y/n, I know.” She pulled you even more into her embraced and placed her chin on your shoulder. For a while you two just held each other while crying. But you completely broke down when you saw Jaehyun’s coffin being carried towards where the group was gathered.
 Johnny and Taeyong were in front, then Doyoung and Mark, Yuta and Haechan, and in the back was Jeno and Taeil. Following them was Jungwoo carrying a bouquet of roses. They all were crying, some better at hiding it than others, but all of them had tears cascading down their cheeks. They walked up the pathway that was made by the group dividing, the rest of Jaehyun’s friends on one side and his family and you on the other. The men carrying the coffin placed it on the lowering device and walked to the side where the rest of his friends were. Jungwoo placed the roses on the coffin, wiped his tears and joined the rest of Jaehyun’s friends.
 Johnny said a parting word to Taeyong and Mark, who he was standing between and joined your side that Jaehyun’s mom wasn’t occupying. You should’ve paid more attention but all you could stare at was the part of the coffin where Jaehyun’s head would be. But then the coffin started lowering and both Johnny and Jaehyun’s mom tighten their grips on you. Your crying turned into screaming and you started thrashing to get out of their grips.
 In any other situation you would’ve been embarrassed but as you watched the coffin disappear into the ground, all you could see was the future you’d be forced to live without Jaehyun with you.  “No, no, no. Jaehyun! You can’t take him from me!” Johnny pulled you into his chest and him and Jaehyun’s mother tried to calm you down by rubbing up and down your back and quietly shushing you. “I don’t want him to leave! I need him!”
 When you first found out that Jaehyun had died, it was in the middle of the night. The police had shown up at your door at 2:42 AM to deliver the news to you. At first, you were in shock, not being able to believe it, your face just paled, and you were unable to speak.
 But seeing his coffin being lowered into the ground snapped everything into place for you. The box that the love of your life was in, was never going to see the light of day again. You’d never be able to have your Jaehyun again. He was now, officially gone.
 After the funeral and burial, you booked an Uber to take you home by yourself with your spiraling headache following close behind.  You could barely see straight, and any noise that was made just caused your headache to get even worse. It felt like the world was spinning, and your vision had gone spotty.
You were waiting on the sidewalk outside of the funeral home when a car pulled up. “Uber for Y/n?” You just nodded and quickly got into the back seat before you your legs gave out. Sitting down and feeling the AC blow cool air onto you helped your headache ease a little bit.
 The silence was broken when the Uber driver turned down the radio and spoke up. “I’m sorry for your loss, Ms.” You nodded even though he was looking forward. “Thank you.” Neither of you said anything after that but it wasn’t awkward.
 Feeling the coldness of the window on your forehead from leaning on the glass helped calm your headache even more. It was now just a dull ache that matched the ache in your chest. You watched as the city you had explored with Jaehyun passed your eyes as the Uber driver drove you to your house. Or your neighbor’s house a couple doors down.
 Not wanting to say that he’s a few houses down, you just paid the driver and got out of the car. Your neighbor was out on his porch, smoking as always. He was a grumpy old man and Jaehyun said that if he ever got like that when he was old that you had permission to put him in a nursing home.
 You got your phone out of the dress pocket and went to rate the Uber driver before you forgot but your neighbor started speaking out loud, making you look up from phone and at him.
 "Hey kid, you young people are always on your phones these days, how about you pick up a newspaper for once and learn something." The man tossed the newspaper that was lying in his yard at you. It fell a few feet away, but you stepped closer to crouch down and grab it.
 The man said something under his breath and flicked his cigarette to the ground, stomping it out after mouthing some words at you. The last breath of smoke came flowing out of his nose as he turned to walk back up his porch and into his house.
 Another neighbor had come out of her house and tried to start up a conversation but with the way the wind was blowing your hair in your face, your headache was starting to make its return, and the eerie feeling the man gave you, you needed to leave. Immediately. You needed to go lie down after drinking some water.
Speed walking to your house with only tripping on a sidewalk crack once, you made your way to your shared home with Jaehyun. As soon as you opened the door, his aroma hit your nostrils and you closed your eyes, you could just imagine him welcoming you home. But when you opened your eyes, you were alone in your dark entryway. No Jaehyun asking how your day was, no Jaehyun dragging you to either the couch to watch TV or the bedroom depending on what type of day he had, no burning smell coming from the kitchen from Jaehyun cooking. No Jaehyun. You didn’t have Jaehyun anymore.
 Not wanting to scream and cry anymore today, you took a shaky breath and tossed the newspaper on the ottoman that sat in front of the couch. You swallowed, but realized that there wasn’t anything to swallow, your mouth was dry, causing you to remember the water you’ve been wanting. Trying to just look straight ahead in hopes of not thinking of Jaehyun, you headed to the kitchen. But of course, everything reminded you of him. His chair at the dining room table for one, it was like you could see him smiling up at you with only love and adoration in his eyes.
 Once you turned the corner from the living room to the kitchen you tensed up, waiting for Jaehyun to pop out and scare you like he always did but the scare never came. When you opened the cabinet that held the glasses and cups that Jaehyun came along to help you pick out, well you picked them out, he acted like a child and complained when you said he couldn’t go to the vinyl section just yet, you saw the mug he reluctantly picked out because he thought it was nice. Slightly moving to the left, ready for his arm to reach over your right shoulder to grab the mug for his drink, but again his arm never came.
 So used to him leaning on the cabinet next to you, you were expecting his face to be revealed once you close the cabinet door. When you looked to your left, there wasn’t anyone there, just the dining room table and behind that, the large windows that showed the backyard, as well as the street.
 Jaehyun always talked about wanting to see your kids grow up and play in that backyard, thinking of that just made everything come crashing down. The glass of water, falling from your hand and shattering as soon as it hit the floor. You fell also, your knees giving out, using your hands to catch yourself, you hissed in pain.
 Lifting your hand off the ground, and turning your palm up, you saw several little cuts and red indents from the glass that had just broke. Not giving a fuck anymore you used your right hand to sweep the small slivers of glass out of your way as your left hand held up your almost entirely limp body. Once most of the glass what out of your way for now, you just laid down. Crying in your kitchen, in the fetal position, with glass shards around you and blood dripping from your palms, you whispered his name before blacking out.
It wasn’t the sun that woke you up, the kitchen island covered you from the sun light that poured through the open blinds, but the ring of your phone. Blindly searching around for your phone, you just felt the pieces of glass that surrounded you. But you were too upset and tired to care enough to get up and actually look for your phone. The ringing would stop soon anyway.
 The ringing did stop soon, and instead of the ringing, frantic knocking on your front door replaced the sound. Then, yelling added to the frantic knocking. “Y/n! Open the door! It’s me, Johnny!” Slowly, you picked yourself up and wiped your hands on the tights you wore underneath the black dress that you forgot to change out of. The wiping only caused the pieces of glass that managed to stay in your palms through your tossing and turning during the night to shift. Johnny started knocking again but before he could yell, you made your way to the door and opened it just a bit.
The man sighed in relief, instantly feeling a invisible weight lift off of his shoulders when he saw that you were there. “Oh good, you’re still here.” Johnny smiled a bit at you. “Of course, I’d be here, I live here.” He just shook his head and under his breath he said, “That’s not exactly what I meant.” Understanding, you just looked down and nodded.
 “Are you bleeding?” Johnny’s voice was still calm but laced with concern and confusion. Based on the situation, of course he thought the worse, but you spoke up before he could ask any more questions, “I dropped a glass and passed out when I got home.” Immediately offering to clean up the mess for you, Johnny just squeezed through the crack between the door and door frame and led himself to the center of the living room. “Alright, where is the mess?” You just pointed to the kitchen and Johnny, silently started picking up the bigger shards.
“Hey Y/n, while I pick up the rest of the glass, how about you go wash your hands, try to remove as much as the glass as you can with tweezers and then I’ll come help you. Is your broom and dust pan still in the closet over here?” “Uh-huh”, you left Johnny in the kitchen to go follow his instructions with removing the glass in the bathroom.
Finding the tweezers and first aid kit wasn’t hard since Jaehyun always insisted that it was important to keep it in reach and keep everything in there full. Grabbing the kit and tweezers and setting it on the vanity, you rinsed the dried blood from your palms so you could see the cuts easier. The glass was embedded into your skin, and it would hurt to take out, but stiches wouldn’t be needed.
“Y/n, I finished cleaning the glass, I’ll come help you in a moment.” Taking a closer look at your palm, you started to remove the glass yourself. Wincing, whenever you had to dig a bit deep to retrieve the shard, but soon your palm was clear of any glass. Losing folding your hand so you could run along the welts with your fingertips caused you to hiss.
Just as you were about to trade the tweezers to your other hand, Johnny came in and took them out of your hold. Without saying anything he held out his other hand. Giving him the hand that still had glass pieces sticking out, he quickly started to remove the bits. Looking at the reelection the mirror showed you saw how messed up you truly looked.  Wrinkled clothes from yesterday, slightly bloody hands with blood on your arms, chapped lips, and streaks of mascara along your cheeks. Even though the sight of yourself was alarming enough, it was when you saw a familiar head of hair peeking out behind Johnny.
The owner of the hair slowly appeared, his eyes were glossed over, the iris and pupils were no longer visible, only the lens of his eyes which were a cloudy opaque white. His nose was crooked and had dried blood coming out of both nostrils. Shards of glass were stuck in all different parts of his face, there was a bump on one of his temples, and the thing that really made your breath hitch besides just seeing him, was the fact that his neck was limp. Jaehyun had died on impact, his neck immediately breaking when the car driving on the wrong side of the road hit him head on. His mouth was turned into a slight smile, the one thing no one had changed from the moment he died to the moment he was buried. They cleaned the blood off of him, they put him suit, propped his neck up, did all the regular things people do to get a dead person ready for burial, but no one, touch the slight smile that was on his face.
He was there, looking over Johnny’s shoulder at the scene that was playing out in front of him. You hadn’t turned around yet, but that didn’t stop you from saying “Johnny, you need to leave.” “What? Y/n, I was just trying to help, did I do something wrong.” His eyes and voice were laced with panic and concerned. “It doesn’t matter you need to leave. Now. Get out of my house.” Johnny softly apologized and told you that you could call him whenever. He turned around and walked right through Jaehyun.
You still haven’t turned around, but Jaehyun faded out when Johnny walked where he was standing but quickly reappeared. His head tilted a bit and the sickeningly sweet smile stayed, with those emotionless gray eyes still staring straight into your soul. “Jaehyun?” You slowly turned your body, but when you were completely turned around, Jaehyun was gone. You whipped your head back to the mirror, but he wasn’t there anymore either.
“Jaehyun?” You asked yourself out loud while walking out of bathroom and into the hallway. He wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Continuing to look for him was a lost cause, he was gone. But of course, you refused to believe that.
Jaehyun never appeared again, with every little breeze that chilled your bones and brought goosebumps to your skin, there wasn’t a blurry Jaehyun passing by.
The next week passed slowly, no waking up to Jaehyun kissing your face, no Jaehyun standing in the bathroom mirror, getting ready for the day, no Jaehyun laughing, no Jaehyun smiling, no Jaehyun.
You just spent your days running on nothing, no food, no sleep, you couldn’t even remember the last time you changed your clothes. Roaming around you and Jaehyun’s was what you did every day, all day. Turning the corner into the living room for what felt like the 50th time that day, and it probably was, you saw the old newspaper that has been in the back of your mind.
Staring down the newspaper and slowly approaching the couch, Jaehyun’s cologne trapped you as soon as you sat down. Just going for it and ripping off the Band-Aid, you opened the newspaper. Something wasn't right though, the date on it, wasn't today's. Well, it was today’s, but not this year’s, or last year’s or even next year’s.
May 31, 1972
Today, but 50 years ago. All the content of the newspaper was normal, politics, town news, advice columns, ads, and even a recipe or two. But one thing about the ads was none of them seemed real.
Want to know where your dreams come from? Meet the person who pick them out!
Remember that childhood imaginary friend? Revisit them today!
Missing someone who's dead? Talk to them now!
Curious about who is watching over you? Everyone has their very own guardian angel, meet yours!
Are you lonely? Order your very own partner!
This has to be a hoax; some teenagers probably threw this is the man's yard wanting to prank and confuse him. But of course, this was the day he threw it at you. Not caring enough to think about the what’s and why’s for too much longer and in dire need of a good chuckle, you looked at the ad about calling the dead.
Missing someone who's dead? Talk to them now!
Is there someone who has passed away that you miss dearly? Well, you can talk to them now! Call the number below!
xxx-xxx-xxxx
Just remember to interact with friends and family outside of speaking with your departure and don’t crowd and overwhelm your departure as they adapt to their new surroundings. This stage is new for everyone.
What a piece of shit.
There were more words under the short paragraph, in much smaller print, but already being skeptical, you didn’t care enough to strain your eyes.
. But with not having anything else to do, you grabbed your phone and punched in each of the digits and pressed the dial button.
"Hello, I'm Steven with Talking to Death! Is there someone you've been missing recently that has died? If so, please state their name, your name, your relation to the person, their death date, and cause of death. If not, I'm not sure why you called this number, but how may I help you anyways?"
"Is this some sort of prank?" You were skeptical with the whole thing. "I understand why you would think that, but we have been a respected company since 1897. Unfortunately, to be able to speak to your loved one, you must believe that you'll be able to talk to them." Steven responded through the phone, seemingly tired of this question but still replying with a joyful customer service type voice.
"Okay, but why haven't I heard of this before?" "Well, it is obviously a king of odd and not everyone goes around telling people about this in fear of sounding crazy, is there someone you would actually like to speak to?"
"Um, yeah, my boyfriend, Jeong Jaehyun died a week ago, so May 24. He died in a car accident." You slightly stuttered through your words, not expecting someone to actually be serious.
"Okay, and now I just need your name." "Y/n L/n." "Alrighty, Ms. L/n, he checked in five days ago and has had time to settle. I will put the call through to his line and he will pick up when he is ready. One thing to remember though, make sure not to get too attached because he isn't in your world anymore, please use with caution. Thank you for calling us and have a good rest of your day."
Steven transferred the call over and as you were waiting, some peaceful jazz music played. It wasn't annoying like elevator music; it was nice and put you in a calm and relaxed state.
The music lasted for a couple minutes, and with each minute that passed, you started to lose hope a bit more but then, the relaxed aura that now surrounded you vanished when you heard him.
“Hello?” It’s him. “Jaehyun?” “Y/n?” “Oh my god! It’s really you, is it? Really you?” You could hear him chuckle from the other side of the line. It was deep and hearty, something you had started to deeply miss.
“Yes Y/n, it is really me. Jaehyun.” “My Jaehyun.” “My Y/n.” You couldn’t help yourself and all the tears started running down your cheeks all at once.
The absurdity of it all caught up with you, even with the tears and the silent sobs trying to force their way out of your body, you couldn’t help but laugh. Hysterically. You were talking to your dead boyfriend.
“I don’t even know what to say. How are you? What was dying like? Are you okay?” Having about a million questions running through head was making the room spin. “Well, I’m doing okay. Nothing hurts, I feel, almost weightless. Dying wasn’t anything like people said it was. My head hit the steering wheel and I woke up in this lobby, or a waiting room. And there was no Jesus, bright light, or stairway that led to the gates of heaven.”
Just wanting to hear Jaehyun talk more, you stayed silent so you could cherish the moment you were given. “Anyways, this world, or whatever, is pretty similar to ours in a sense, for now, I’m just in this hotel room until my house is created. Enough about me though, I’ve missed you, how are you?”
A dry chuckle left your throat, “A fucking trainwreck. I told myself that I’d never be dependent on a man, but here I am, an absolute dumpster fire. Johnny came by to check on me and when I didn’t answer my phone or the door right away he thought I had killed myself. I screamed and kicked at your funeral like a toddler throwing a tantrum. Johnny and your mom even had to hold me down so I wouldn’t jump in your grave when they lowered your casket.” Recalling the events, you felt your stomach twist. Not out of embarrassment, but of how you felt, even just looking back, you felt like puking.
“I’m sorry you had to go through that Y/n.” It was obvious that Jaehyun didn’t know what to say in this situation. However, you were sure that the conversations would go back to almost normal with time.
Clearing his throat in hopes of getting rid of the awkwardness, Jaehyun spoke up after minutes of silence. “Well, I have to go, Y/n. I love you, so much.” Wait.
“What? Jaehyun, we just started talking again? Did I say something wrong? We’re always open with each other? What’s going on?”
Taking a deep breath, Jaehyun was able to calm you like he always did. “You can call me tomorrow, it’ll be okay. I love you.”
“I love you too.” But he had already hung up before your brain and body allowed you to get the words out. Staring down at your phone’s keypad, you were alone again.
You were climbing up the walls for the rest of the day, not being able to think about anything but calling Jaehyun, your body just couldn’t stop shaking. Too buzzed on the thought of speaking to him again, no matter what you did, you couldn’t just calm down.
No matter how slow time seemed to go by, tomorrow did eventually come. You decided to call Jaehyun around noon.
Having already saved the number in your phone, you clicked it and pressed call.
"Hello, I'm Steven with Talking to Death! Is there someone you've been missing recently that has died? If so, please state their name, your name, your relation to the person, their death date, and cause of death. If not, I'm not sure why you called this number, but how may I help you anyways?"
“Hello Steven! It’s Y/n, Jeong Jaehyun’s girlfriend, may I please speak to him.” Your response to the man was much for cheerful this time around than your first greeting. “Ah, Y/n. Now that your number is in our system and Mr. Jeong is aware that you can call him, whenever you call him from now on, you will just be automatically transferred to his line. But, I cannot stress this enough, make sure you do not overwhelm him and please seek communication and other forms of social life in your own world.”
“Okay Steven, just transfer my call to Jae.” With only a sigh of dispute, Steven respected your wishes and soon the jazz music that quickly became familiar, welcomed you.
“Hey Y/n. How are you today?” He didn’t sound excited or in the very least, content that you were calling, even with him telling you it was okay to call today. “I’m doing okay, but how are you, you’re the one that sounds upset.” He just claimed that he was fine, and honestly, the sound of his distaste towards talking to you, broke you inside.
The conversation ended up being just like the one that occurred the day before. It was full of awkward silence, passive aggressive comments, and annoyance. You didn’t know what you were doing wrong, you didn’t think you had said something wrong, but Jaehyun was acting like you were the one who killed him, and you had no idea why.
Even if he seemed more and more upset, you never stopped calling.
“Hey Jae?” He just hummed. “Did I do something wrong?” He huffed and just responded with a simple, “No”. “Well, then why are you acting like this? I saw you in the mirror the day after the funeral, I thought you’d want to talk to me.”
You sniffled and that’s when he finally said something again, “Y/n, I never appeared in a mirror, that was your imagination. And it’s not like I don’t want to talk to you, it’s just going to be harder for you to let go and move on.”
You didn’t get why he thought you’d want to let him go and move on, he was your everything, you didn’t care how many times you’d have to say it, but you simply couldn’t stress it enough, you love him.
“You’re just tired Jaehyun. You need to get more sleep; I’ll call you tomorrow. I love you.”
“I love you too, Y/n.”
The call ended and you could feel your eye twitch a bit. Were you actually going crazy? You hadn’t left your house in weeks, you hadn’t had a normal sleep, shower, or eating schedule since Jaehyun died.
Walking to the bathroom to just wash your face of the tears you hadn’t know that fell. You turned towards the sink and placed your palms on the cold marble. A slight sting spread throughout your palms, so you pulled them from the counter, and you saw eight crescent moons made from blood.
Happening without your notice, your hands had clenched into fists so hard that your nails had made small indents into your palms.
Going ahead and washing your hands before your face, you looked at yourself in the mirror for the first time in a long time and you could hardly recognize the sight in front of you. The dark circles under your eyes, your skin wasn’t as vibrant, and you had lost a significant amount of weight. What happened?
That question made you giggle to yourself a bit. It was pretty funny in your opinion, it did cause you to laugh for the first time in weeks, or maybe you’re just delusional at this point. The little question was easy to answer, you lost your entire world, there wasn’t much else to say.
You kept your word to Jaehyun, you did call the next day. The only thing is, he didn’t answer.
It was now your fourth time calling Jaehyun for the day, however, there was still no answer. He shouldn’t be busy; he was supposed to be expecting your call. You were about to redial the number for the fifth time until a knock on your door was heard. You put your phone down, your hand slightly shaky as you did so. Slowly, you walked towards your front door and looked through the peephole, only to see Johnny.
You sighed as your unlocked the door, pulling it open to see Johnny smile sheepishly at you. “Y/n! How are you doing?” Did he find out that he could talk to Jaehyun too? Was that the reason Jaehyun had started to answer less and less.
Raising your right eyebrow you said, “Hello Johnny, I’m fine. How are you?”
“Y/n, no one has seen or even heard from you since the funeral, and I haven’t seen or heard from you since the day after. Are you sure you’re doing alright everyone’s worried about you, me, Jae’s mom, and the rest of the boys.”
Already irritated and only being able to think about calling Jaehyun, you started to close the door, “Yes, I said I’m fine and I would really like to be alone now.” Your voice got louder as you continued to speak. “Please leave me alone and tell everyone to stop calling. I need the line free.” Finally slamming the door and locking it, you rushed back to where you had set your phone down.
Was it possible for Jaehyun to call you? You doubted it, but just in case it was possible, you needed to make sure that your phone was always free.
Running back to your phone once you made sure Johnny had left, you couldn’t stop shaking. It had been only a couple minutes since you last tried calling but you didn’t care. He was yours; you were allowed to talk to him.
It took a few tries because you kept accidently hitting the wrong number because of how bad you were actually shaking. But finally, you tapped the last number and hit call.
It rung for a bit before you heard the groggily and almost annoyed, “Hello Y/n.”
“Why didn’t you answer?” Jaehyun sighed on the other side of the line, and you could imagine him rubbing his temples. “Y/n. I really think we need to stop doing this. We’re both in really different places right now.” You felt your breathing picking up. You had just got him back and now he was leaving you again.
“No, no, no, I need you! Don’t you understand? I can’t go on without you and I just got you back!” Tears were starting to run down your cheeks and Jaehyun just went silent for a bit. But after listening to you mumble barely audible sentences about him leaving and you needing him, he spoke up. “It would be different if we were together again Y/n, and that’s not really possible.” But it is.
It was your turn to go silent and now Jaehyun could see the gears turning in your head. “Y/n please, don’t do it. You still have your entire life ahead of you. I’m gone, but that doesn’t mean you need to follow me. Please, please, please, do not do it. Take a deep breath, we can still call as long as you don’t do anything you’ll regret.” Jaehyun was now the one who was breathing heavily and speaking quickly. But you, you on the other hand had gone eerily silent.
 “How could I ever regret something that’ll let me see you again? And what’s the point of living the rest of my life if you’re not right beside me? We could be happy again Jae.”
 “No, Y/n, you don’t understand what this means. There’s no going back, please don-" “I do understand, I love you more than anything, I can’t live without you, and I don’t want to either. I love you, so, so much. We’ll be together again soon Jaehyun.”
Hanging up before Jaehyun could say anything else to you, you pushed the end call button with your thumb. Crazed by the idea of being with Jaehyun again and being overcome with adrenaline, you started walking to the garage.
 After making sure the garage door was fully shut, you sat in you and Jaehyun’s shared car. The cool temperature of the leather on your burning skin, along with the scent of Jaehyun, you were intoxicated. Putting the key in the ignition and turning, while holding your foot on the break, the car came to life. Turning on the air conditioner, so you could be comfortably cold and leaning back, letting yourself sink into the seat.
 What you didn’t know was that Jaehyun had left his room in the hotel and sprinted down all the stairs and to the lobby, without being able to run out of breath, his question came out clearly and urgently. “Can we call someone from the world we came from?” The man with the name tag that read Steven, looked slightly down, and shook his head. “I’m afraid not, these calls are only one-way calls, meaning only one side can call, and that side is the living world.”
 About to start crying, Jaehyun tried to argue. “You don’t understand. This is an emergency. I need to call my girlfriend; I have to convince her not to do anything irrational.” Jaehyun’s eyes were wide with crazy hidden behind them.
 “I am really sorry Mr. Jeong, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that I can possibly do to help you reach her.”
 Finally, letting the tears slip, he sunk to his knees in the middle of the lobby of the hotel. There were quite a few newcomers that night, many of them being new to the environment, stared. Regular residents of hotel could imagine what was happening. The dead doesn’t have too much to worry about anymore, some though still held feelings and emotions for past loved ones.
 Jaehyun was asked to return to his room, as he was starting to scare the newly-deads. With puffy eyes and tousled hair from pulling at it, he curled up on his bed with the one item he was allowed to choose and bring to his new life with him, the ring he was going to propose with. That’s actually the reason he was going to be home late the night he had died. Although, if he hadn’t gone to the jeweler’s that night to buy the ring, he would be cuddling with you on your guys’ couch right now. He still doesn’t regret going to buy the ring, he loved you and wanted to spend the rest of his life with you, and even though it wasn’t like he planned, he still got to live his life with you by his side.
 Thinking about that, he started to remember what caused these thoughts.
 Time passed differently in both worlds, Jaehyun’s seconds were slower than yours. So, what was two hours for him, was actually around four hours for you.
 With four hours passing, you were starting to fall asleep, it was harder to think straight and remember everything, but you could still remember Jaehyun. Before you couldn’t think about anything anymore, all your favorite memories replayed in your mind, there were a few that didn’t involve Jaehyun, but he still was the main star in your movie of life. The last thing you thought of wasn’t even a memory. It was what you had imagined your future with Jaehyun to be like.
Allowing one final tear to slide down your cheek, your eyes fluttered shut.
You shift uncomfortably in your seat,
“What are you talking about?”
Voice barely audible.
Something about him makes you stay in your seat even when your senses tell you to run.
“I’m not visible to you” he says once more.
This time his tone irritates you, he isn’t even trying to make you understand.
His cold eyes also have something else in them but you can’t quite make out what that is, it seems locked away. Only visible when you search for it.
The sun makes his skin glow, so much that it almost looks see-through. Your eyes go down to his lips, they have the same shade of pink as his hair.
For a split second, you see your surroundings lose colour and everything moves in slow motion. The people sitting around you look like frozen statues, none of them even blinks. Even the vehicles outside are standing still on the road. All the noise from the busy city has completely vanished. Whilst the clouds seem to be frozen in place.
But you can still see Jungwoo, you can feel him closer to you than ever before and you hear him. You hear him so clearly even though he is not talking to you.
Before you can even process what is happening, the sudden halt of the bus takes you out of your trance. The force almost makes you fall over.
You grab onto the seat in front of you to balance yourself and you hear the voice of the bus driver shouting something out of his window. Everyone gets up to see what is going on, they start whispering to each other and you hear someone calling the emergency number.
No one else seems to have felt what you just did as if you and everyone else were in two different places.
You turn to Jungwoo, but the seat is empty.
The gush of cold air hitting the side of your face makes you look over at the door, it’s wide open but nobody else seems to notice it.
--
Jungwoo takes a deep breath to calm himself down.
Something definitely happened, something that was not supposed to happen.
Like a glitch almost, a spilt second where the universe was out of balance.
The look he had seen in your eyes tells him that you experienced it too.
How could you see him in the first place? Did he mess up somewhere?
He takes out the small piece of rolled-up parchment from his pocket, not noticing his watch that has stopped running.
“A step in the right direction after great hesitation.
A twist of fate, On the destined date.
The appointed hour, a blessing and curse combined,
Your journey of one, six and eight.”
No matter how much he tries to understand, none of the words make any sense to him.
But he had to be quick because time was running out, that was the one thing he was sure of.
--
Lost in your thoughts you don’t notice the message you had received from your friend asking you why you weren’t at work yet.
It’s only when you see the name of your boss displayed on your screen, indicating that he is calling you, that you realise how much time has passed.
Your eyes glide past the name to see what time it is.
09:45
You were supposed to start your shift almost an hour ago. And it doesn’t seem like you will be moving any time soon so you grab your bag and get off the bus.
Luckily you weren’t too far away from your stop so you get there relatively fast. And after explaining the situation, your boss didn’t go into it any further. Which you were very thankful for.
As the day goes by your thoughts drift off to Jungwoo, you keep thinking about his weird behaviour.
The more you think about it, the more you understand that he wasn’t interested in you. He didn’t even care to have a chat with you out of courtesy.
If only you hadn’t taken the bus that day, no if only you hadn’t gone up to him. No, you should’ve never invested your time in him or even let him into your head.
A deep sigh leaves your mouth.
No matter how much you try to forget it, a feeling of disappointment still settles in the pit of your stomach. He felt so different to you, you were almost sure he was like no other human being.
But of course, that wasn’t the case. He was far from what you thought of him. Maybe it was your own fault for making up this “perfect façade” about someone you didn’t even know.
And you were hoping to fall in love during the first snowfall of the year, “what a joke” you think to yourself.
Maybe love just wasn’t for you.
--
Snowflakes are falling softly on the ground, white and glistening, almost erasing all the troubles in the world.
Jungwoo puts his hand out to catch one, even when he knows he can’t. He looks at it while it goes straight through him. But for the first time in a while, it makes him smile.
Because a newfound hope has started to blossom in his chest.
It had been a good day; he managed to bring together two couples and even healed a broken heart. His list was getting shorter and the possibility of regaining his life seemed to come a step closer each day.
From the edge of the building, he is sitting on, he looks down the streets of the city that was once home to him. It had only been a couple of years since he left but a lot had changed.
He spots a child holding onto the hand of his father, trying to keep up with his little feet. Wrapped in a big scarf and wearing little mittens on his hands, he looked absolutely adorable. Anyone could tell how much the father adored him, by the gentle smile grazing his face whilst holding his little hand tightly.
Parental love, a love set deep in the heart but one that is very complex at the same time.
He can’t even remember a time his own parents ever looked at him like that. Because they never did, not even once. He tried so hard for them, to make them like him, to please them and to love them. Hoping he would be loved in return.
A couple walks in the opposite direction, holding hands and giggling slightly. The blush on their faces is evident even from all the way where he was sitting.
First love, the overwhelming feeling of holding someone so close to your heart for the first time, one that he recognises all too well.
Her bright eyes are still engraved in his brain, they were his favourite. Because they made his days bearable. The very last time he looked into her eyes she smiled at him. He felt happy, for once he genuinely felt happy.
He spots a group of friends enjoying the evening in a little coffee shop at the end of the road. Chatting away about their day, sharing laughs and enjoying their youth.
Friendship, a different kind of love, one that is easy to obtain and hard to let go of, one that is easier overlooked but a love destined for everyone.
The only person in the world who accepted him for who he was and who loved him because of that. He was the only person that reached out his hand to him and held it until the very end. His one and only friend, Doyoung.
At the thought of him, Jungwoo feels a sting in his chest. Something like an arrow being shot into his heart.
He takes a few deep breaths before he takes out the parchment again.
“This is the final thing you have to accomplish. If you find the right people and bring them together before your time is up, your second chance at life will be granted. You must be on time, even a minute plays a crucial role. Everything you need to know is writing on here.”
The words keep playing in his head.
One thing he did not understand is why this was delivered separately, and why this one was different to all his other cases.
The sound of the opening door takes him by surprise. He didn’t expect anyone to be here at this hour or on a day like this.
But he couldn’t care less because they wouldn’t know he was there anyway.
“A twist of fate, on the destined date.”
Something about this sentence makes him uncomfortable, it provokes worry. Because fate doesn’t have twists. It’s something that is meant to be, right?
“Oh, you’re here too...” he hears a familiar voice say.
He sees you standing by the door when he turns around and then he gets up and walks up to you.
You start walking backwards but he is faster than you and before you know it you are standing with your back against the door.
“I don’t know who you are and I don’t care who you are but if you are here to ruin things for me, spare your energy and go back to where you came from”
You scoff at his words.
“Listen here you prick, I got the memo this morning already! You don’t need to go on about that. But just because you don’t like me doesn’t mean you can treat me like this.”
“Why are you here?”
“Do I have to tell you about what I do with my life now too? Just get out of my way, I’m really not in the mood to argue”
“Can you really see me?”
“Then do you think I'm just talking to the air?" you answer, sighing heavily.
Something doesn’t add up.
You walk past him and go to sit on the other side.
Jungwoo searches for a sign but there is nothing out of the ordinary. Even though he doesn’t trust you, he somehow knows you aren’t a threat to him. Which confuses him even more.
“Could this be part of the assignment?” he thinks to himself.
All he can do now is observe the situation so he decides to sit down too.
For a while you both just sit there not saying anything, it’s strangely peaceful. Neither of you feeling anything.
“I’m sorry,” Jungwoo says.
“You are very rude, you know?”
“I know, that’s why I’m apologising”
When you turn to look at him, he is already facing you. The soft apologetic smile on his face makes your heart skip a beat.
“It’s fine...” you say trying not to give away how much he affects you.
“It’s not that I dislike you, I just thought- you were someone else”
You nod at him not really knowing what to say, hearing his words makes you feel slightly better.
As the misunderstanding is somewhat settled you slowly fall into a conversation, which goes on for hours into the night without either of you realising.
Just like the time that is ticking away.
The following days you still wait for him each morning but now he sits next to you and you spend your mornings with him before starting your day. And most evenings are spent on the rooftop, you meet practically every day but even so, there is never a dull moment between you two.
You find out that you two had lived on the same road when growing up and even crossed paths when you still were in school.
He understood your sense of humour that most people found lame. And there was always something to talk about. It just was so easy with him. Which made it even easier to fall for him.
Jungwoo felt it too, he knew something changed. It was exciting and new to him...you felt different to him.
--
He looks up to the publishing company in front of him. It was weird for him to be led to a specific place but he was sure he needed to be here for his next case. Not too long after entering, he finds the man he came for and he sees you sitting behind one of the many desks too.
A rush of anxiety goes through his body at the thought of it being you he has to set up with him. So, he turns around and begins to walk out. But he knows can’t let personal feelings get in the way, no matter how much he dislikes it.
He gets the little sachet filled with love and returns to the office. He looks at every move of the man after he has done what he needs to do. He can feel his heartbeat increasing with each passing minute.
He sees him walk over to the row where you are sitting at. His fists have become white from how hard he is clenching them. But the man walks pasts your chair and goes up to a woman a couple of desks further.
One thing leads to another and before you know it, he is down on his knee asking her to marry him. Jungwoo lets out the breath he was holding in this whole time.
He feels selfish for being so happy that it wasn’t you, but at the same time, he can’t contain it.
When you step out of the company that evening, you immediately spot your favourite smile across the street. Your heart does a little twirl when he tells you he has been waiting for you.
“Can I take you somewhere?” he asks
“Huh? Isn’t almost everything closed by now?”
“Do you trust me?”
You don’t even have to think about it, which confuses you. But at the same time, the question brings you peace as if it’s the most normal thing ever to trust him.
You look at him and smile, “I do”
He leads you all the way to the other side of the city. The further you get, the lesser the bustling of the evening gets. Almost as if you aren’t even in the same city anymore.
Jungwoo leads you into a park. A look of recognition settles on your face when memories from high school come floating back. It had been ages since you last visited this place and you almost forget about it.
After a while of walking in silence, Jungwoo turns to you with a huge grin on his face.
“Close your eyes, please”
You look at him with raised eyebrows and a playful smile but do as he asks. A couple of moments and warily steps later he tells you that you can look.
A surprised gasp leaves your mouth as you look around. Endless bushes full of pink roses covered with a layer of thin ice come into view.
“You like it?” you hear him ask
“Yes, they are so beautiful” you answer as you carefully trace the icy petals of the flowers.
You’re taking pictures when you look over at Jungwoo. He is standing surrounded by all the flowers. A soft smile is grazing his face and an unusual yet alluring energy is radiating off of him. You can’t take your eyes off of him so you decide to take a photo.
What you don’t notice is how Jungwoo is slowly fading away on your phone.
--
The pure joy on the elderly couple’s faces fills Jungwoo’s heart. Two people who had been searching for one another for more than 20 years while never giving up on their love for each other, could finally be together again. It was such an authentic form of love; one he was envious of.
Maybe if the circumstances were different, he could have experienced it too. Spending a lifetime with one person...
You enter his mind.
Your curious eyes and the way you laughed at his jokes, or how cute you looked with your huge scarf that covered most of your face. He wouldn’t mind experiencing more moments like that, he wouldn’t mind at all if it was you.
When he crosses out the elderly couple’s names, he notices he only has one more pair left. For some reason whoever, it does not make him happy.
He was a step closer to his goal each day but something felt off, it seemed too good to be true. It was almost too easy.
He puts the list away and strolls down the street, maybe he could see you again.
And not much later, as if his heart led him to you, he sees you walking down the street. He hurries to catch up but then decides to stay a couple of steps behind you.
Just as you reach the bus stop, you abruptly stop and turn around, catching him off guard. Jungwoo practically jumps in the air and you start laughing uncontrollably.
“For fuck’s sake you almost gave me a heart attack”
“That wouldn’t happen if you weren’t sneaking up on me, would it?” you ask, highly amused.
“I was not sneaking up on you. I just wanted to say hi!”
“Oh yeah of course”
 “What are you doing here anyway?” you say as you pull your coat around you even tighter to keep yourself warm.
“I was just in the area, are you cold?”
“Yes, are you not? How come you are always dressed so lightly?” you ask him as you reach out to touch his cheeks.
Jungwoo takes a step backwards but you still manage to cup his cheeks. He can feel your cold hands on his face and for the first time ever someone’s touch doesn’t go through him.
He is at a loss for words, partly because he doesn’t understand and partly because it feels so foreign. It has been so long since he has physically felt anything.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” you say when you realise what you are doing.
“No, no please don’t” you hear him say before he wraps his arms around you.
“May I please hold you for a moment?”
The mood suddenly shifts into something emotional, you both can feel it but you don’t acknowledge it. You allow him to hold you, sensing he needs it.
Being in his arms felt safe, something like returning home.
After what felt like ages, Jungwoo slightly pulls back and asks you if you have warmed up a bit.
Not being able to look into his eyes, you nod while keeping your eyes on his chest.
“You look so cute” you hear him say
Now you were definitely feeling warmed up. His words made you feel butterflies all throughout your body. When you look up at him you see him looking back at you with his sweet smile.
“You look cute too,” you say to him.
He chuckles slightly and it’s the prettiest sound you’ve ever heard.
You stand there looking into each other’s eyes with hearts beating in the same rhythm.
You see Jungwoo’s eyes flicker down to your lips, and feeling a bit confident after his compliment you start to lean in.
You see Jungwoo’s smile get bigger before you close your eyes.
Before he can lean in, he suddenly hears a ticking sound. When he looks up to see where it comes from, he sees the familiar number appear above your head. All the blood disappears from his face when he realises what it means.
You were his last assignment.
He pulls away from you in shock but also disappointment. Out of everyone it had to be you.
You open your eyes when you feel him pull away and ask if everything is alright. The look on his face tells you it’s not but he doesn’t say anything.
“What’s wrong?”
“I-I think I should go,” he tells you.
It’s so clearly visible, there is only one day left.
Before you can say anything else your bus arrives and he is suddenly nowhere to be seen.
You reach for your phone to call him but you realise you never asked for his number nor that you have ever seen him use his phone.
--
With a heavy heart and trembling hands, he takes out his list but doesn’t unfold it. This can’t be right. It can’t be you out of everyone in this city. He wishes so desperately that he is wrong but he knows he isn’t. He saw the numbers above your head, just like he had seen them for every one of the people he had to bring together. Indicating how long he had to find the right person for them and complete his task. It was tricky at first but after the first few couples, he got the hang of it and it actually became something he looked forward to. Because the look on everyone’s faces after he sealed their love for each other, was priceless.
But not this time, every second that passes makes him want to stop. It doesn’t even matter if he can get his life back now because what was the purpose of it if you were not going to be there with him? But he has no choice, he has to if he does not want to disappear completely.
The paper feels rough on his fingers almost as if it’s digging into his skin, mocking him for even hoping something would work out for him. He knew he should never have let his guard down for you but it’s not like he could prevent it. Not with you.
But the harsh reality is staring back at him once he unfolds and reads your name. The golden letters shine under the city lights. Was this why everything seemed so easy? Because he would be backstabbed in the end? Was this the reason why only this mission was written in riddles? So, he could feel his heart crumbling down while he solved it? Was this all a cruel joke he had to pay for just because he wanted a second shot at life?
Jungwoo looks up at the sky with tears in his eyes as his hand crumbles the paper into a ball. But no matter how much pain he feels, the world just goes on. The buzzing of the city doesn’t die down nor do the stars stop sparkling in the night sky.
--
One more day and all of this would end.
Strolling through the streets he sees everyone setting up the last bits of decorations for valentine’s day. Everywhere he looks he sees pink and red hearts, flowers and signs. He wishes he could be here for it, to see the full effect of his hard work. The streets would be filled with people in love, falling in love and wanting to love.
You’d be too...once he completes his mission, you’d be loved by someone that you love too. You’d be happy...with someone else. You’d spend your days with that person from now on...
No matter how much he tries to prepare himself for it, he can’t accept it. How could he when he was in love with you? How could he be okay with binding you to someone else while he will disappear from your life?
The one thing that slightly calms down his wavering feelings is the fact that your partner’s name has not yet been revealed to him. While waiting does make him anxious, he feels comforted by the thought he doesn’t have to go out and find them just yet.
Then he feels it again, the same thing he felt on the bus. Everything and everyone seems to stop moving, even the snow falling down has stopped mid-air. This time whoever something happens. Golden light surrounds him and disappears into his pocket. Once reaches down he pulls out the list and the parchment, both being lit up by the light. But no matter how many times he looks and rereads them, nothing about them changes.
As he follows the beam of the light, he sees the same ticking clock that has appeared on his wrist. Four golden numbers reveal the same countdown he had seen that night with you.
The world starts moving again and everyone resumes what they were doing. Yet again, no one else seems to have experienced what he just did.
--
The bus stops right in front of him like it does every single day but none of it is the same. He hesitates to get on and almost turns back when he sees your face, smiling so brightly at him. He gives you a small smile back while getting on and walks towards you. Every step he takes feels heavier than the last one. The ticking of the clock becomes louder and louder in his ears.
“You’re finally here! I missed you this morning”, he hears you say. Making all the noise in his head disappear.
“Sorry, I missed the bus” he lies.
The way you are looking at him tells him that you don’t believe him but you don’t pry further.
“I want to ask you something”
Jungwoo turns his head to you and smiles. But you can see the sadness in his eyes. It’s so intense that it makes your heartache.
“What is it?”
There are a million things you want to ask him but can’t bring yourself to.
“Can I get your number maybe? I realised we never exchanged them and it would be easier if anything like this morning happens again...don’t you think?” you laugh awkwardly
He chuckles before responding, “I’m sorry but my phone broke a while ago”
“Oh! that’s totally fine...”
Maybe he doesn’t want my number, you think to yourself. The familiar disappointing feeling settles in your stomach. Maybe he doesn’t like me that much after all...
Jungwoo notices how your mood has dropped and it kills him to know it’s because of him. He didn’t lie to you, ever since the accident his phone had been broken...
There is something he has been contemplating ever since he found out you were his last mission. Everything will come to an end if he does it. Everything he has worked for all of this time will vanish and leave this world like it never existed.
He knows and yet he chooses you.
“Do you maybe want to go on a date tomorrow? It’s Valentine’s Day...” he asks a bit unsure.
With a bright smile, you look up at him and nod.
“I’d love that!” you tell him. The feeling in your stomach turns into a million butterflies.
--
03:00
Jungwoo pushes his sleeve back up once he sees there are only three hours left for your binding. While it’s strange your partner’s name hasn’t shown up yet, he isn’t too worried because he has dealt with similar cases.
He makes his way over to the door and grabs the handle, then hesitates. If he goes to you and the person you are meant to be with shows up, then he won’t be able to do anything but complete his mission. But if they do not show up, he’ll disappear right in front of your eyes once the timer reaches its end.
Both of the options break his heart even more.
Time passes by without him moving from his spot. Eventually, he lets go and goes back to sit down. No matter how hard he tries, he just can’t do it.
He takes out the parchment one last time.
“A step in the right direction after great hesitation.
A twist of fate, On the destined date.
The appointed hour, a blessing and curse combined,
Your journey of one, six and eight.”
The sun is setting already when he feels his wrist light up again.
02:00
You must be wondering where he is, he thinks. Your date was supposed to start half an hour ago...
“Your journey of 1-6-8...168 hours?” he quickly takes out his list to see when he brought together his first couple of this year.
Exactly one week ago.
“A step in the right direction after great hesitation...But that doesn’t seem right? I didn’t hesitate with any of the bindings...”
That’s when it hits him.
“I hesitated to get close to y/n!”
His wrist begins to hurt as the light seems to have become brighter.
01:30
You’re standing in front of the café you agreed to meet at. An hour has passed and you still see no sign of him. But you keep waiting with the bouquet of pink roses and the new phone you bought him, in your hands.
“He will be here”
01:00
“The appointed hour, a blessing and curse combined...The hour it’s all over! A blessing for y/n and a curse...for me?”
So many things rush through his brain and he feels the blood streaming through his veins. His heartbeat is almost as loud as the cars passing by him.
There is something he overlooked, something he completely disregarded in all of this.
00:30
“A twist of fate, On the destined date...” as soon as he reads out the remaining line, a sharp pain shoots through his arm. When he looks down, he sees the timer pulsating on his wrist.
He grabs the edge he is sitting on as tightly as he can so he doesn’t fall off. He turns himself around and lets himself fall down on the concrete beside him. His hands are trembling uncontrollably and his breathing is staggered. There it is, the answer he has been looking for this entire time. Written in the same golden letters as your name and the clock.
“Kim Jungwoo”
He was the one fated to be yours.
00:20
He gets up and sprints down as fast as he can, wishing with all that he has that you’re still waiting for him.
00:10
He arrives in front of the café but you aren’t there. He goes inside but you aren’t sitting at the many tables in the shop either.
His wrist feels like it’s on fire and his lungs could give in at any moment, but he keeps running with the winter air hitting his face.
00:05
The tears running down his eyes disappear into the void before they reach the ground. He feels himself go weaker by the minute. Even his skin looks almost invisible.
The bus stop is his last hope, it’s the only place he can think of and he so hopes he is right. The sounds around him start to quiet down and his surroundings become hazy.
But he sees you so clearly. Standing at the bus stop like the very first time he saw you.
“Y/n” he calls out with the last bit of energy he has left.
00:00
You turn around but there is no one. Only the occasional car passes by. The streets are as empty as you feel at the moment. For a slight second, you thought someone called your name, that he called your name. Maybe you just hoped for it...
--
One year later
“It’s that time of the year again everyone, love is in the air! And while this is a very happy day that we spend with a loved one, we’d like to remember the ones that no longer are with us. As they too deserve to be loved on a day like this. I’d first like to mention the devastating bus accident that happened exactly 5 years ago where a high school student named Kim Jungwoo, tragically left us after being hit by bus 32 while crossing the road. May he rest in peace and the people still mourning for him be given the strength to keep going forward. The second case we’d like to remember today...”
You wipe away the tear running down your cheek while the radio beams through the bus. You're not even paying attention to what they're saying as you look at the seat next to you that is still empty. No matter how much time passes, there doesn’t go a day by where you don’t hope that he will get on and sit next to you. Tell you he is sorry for being late and flash you that smile you love so dearly.
When you check the time on your phone, the photo you took of him is staring back at you. And a small smile appears on your face. “I’ll see you in a bit...” you whisper.
After searching for so long, you found out where he went. For a long time, you tried to forget about him but you couldn’t. So, you searched for him everywhere. You resented him but you loved him. You couldn’t just let go thus you found him eventually...
After ringing the bell you get off at the cemetery.
You make your way through the different rows of headstones while you clutch the flowers tightly to your chest.
You see a man standing at the place you were looking for. He keeps apologising for something and tears keep running down his cheeks. Eventually, you see him drop to his knees while letting out an agonizing scream.
The sound of pure heartbreak in his voice is too much for you so you start crying with him as you can’t hold yourself back.
After what seems forever you approach him and lay down the flowers in your hands.
“Are you here for Jungwoo?” he asks you with a broken voice
You slowly nod as you wipe your eyes.
“Are you a family member? Oh, I’m sorry if I’m overstepping...”
“No, I’m his best friend...”
“Doyoung?”
He looks up at you with a surprised expression on his face. “Do I know you?”
“Jungwoo told me all about you” you explain.
Doyoung looks at the headstone in front of him with a pained expression on his face.
“Did he mention how I’ve been an awful friend?”
You shake your head slightly and say, “actually he spoke very highly of you. He told me you were always there for him. And that he was glad he was able to meet a friend like you.”
The tears keep falling down his face.
“I don’t deserve to be remembered like that. Not- not after what I did to him...”
“I’m sure he thinks differently. He never once spoke badly about you. He never spoke badly about anyone, to begin with...”
“He didn’t...he loved a lot, too much sometimes.”
“So, you shouldn’t talk about yourself like this, he wouldn’t have wanted it.”
Slowly but surely, you both fall into a deep conversation about the one you held so dearly to your heart.
“Could you tell me what happened, please?” you ask unsurely
Doyoung takes a deep breath and looks down at his hands on his lap.
“He got bullied all throughout high school. There was no reason for it but they never stopped...Jungwoo never liked conflict so he would just bear all of it on his own. I tried to be there for him whenever but in senior year this new girl joined and he suddenly changed. Jungwoo caught feelings for her and that just added to everything. She was part of that group and when word got out that he liked her, the bullying became worse. There were days he would end up in the hospital but even then, it didn’t matter to him because she cared about him. But that wasn’t the case because she is the reason he isn’t here anymore.”
A fresh set of tears start to roll down his face.
“He didn’t believe she had bad intentions. I-I should have stopped it....it was valentine’s day just like today, a few days before his birthday when she asked him to come help her because she was stuck at school. I warned him not to believe her and asked him not to go...but I didn’t stop him when he insisted. He said he just wanted to check if she was safe...I don’t know what happened inside but when I went after him, he was already running out while crying...he didn’t look good; they had hurt him. Then-then...he ran across the street...I was too late...I let it happen before my eyes...”
You stroke his back in an effort to comfort him even though you barely can compose yourself.
A heavy silence, only broken with an occasional snuffle settles in.
“How did you know him?” you hear him ask after a while.
“We both took the same bus home every day so we met naturally; it was spring when I saw him for the first time. I can’t believe it’s been a year already...It feels like yesterday when I went up to him-”
Doyoung looks at you with a confused expression on his face, “What do you mean a year? Jungwoo has been gone for five years already...”
You feel as if time has stopped yet again, your hands feel clammy and your head can’t comprehend what he is telling you.
“That’s not possible...I even took this photo of him” you take out your phone again with shaky hands. But when you look down at your screen to show him, your phone falls out of your hand.
He is no longer there.
You furrowed your eyebrows, but moved quickly away from the booth and into the club space, painfully aware of the brush of air your thighs were meeting thanks to your achingly short skirt. The club was alive with rich patrons flaunting their wealth and throwing money to their servers while others in the upper floors snuck money to each other in exchange for vials or small baggies.
“Get me a rum and coke plus a Shirley Martian, Shotaro,” you handed your boss the tab and leaned against the now busy bar top.
“Sungchan hates rum and coke,” Shotaro froze as he eyed the paper. “Just grab a bottle of Soju from the back and I’ll make that mocktail now.”
“Aye aye, Captain,” you shouted as you slid behind the bar top to the fridge, quickly snatching up a bottle of soju and a shot glass. After you collected the second drink, you maneuvered your way past the velvet curtain, only to be stunned by the sight in front of you.
The man on the floor was easily twice the muscle mass of Sungchan, but the deer held the buff man steadfast with simply the bottom of his dress shoe.
“Ah, there she is now. What is it you have to say for yourself?” Sungchan’s eyes were wild, his hands shoved into his pockets as if holding this man down was an easy feat.
The velvet curtain behind you was pulled and a figure appeared next to you. “Boss, you said you weren’t going to beat any guests today.” Yuta sounded tired, his fox ears twitching as he looked sadly at the scene before him.
Sungchan frowned, glaring at the seemingly insubordinate fox. With another strong bout of pressure, Sungchan removed his foot from the sobbing patron. “Get him out of here, Yuta.”
“Of course, sir,” Yuta confirmed, and without sparing you another glance he whispered, “you look adorable.”
You moved to the side as Yuta yanked the man onto his feet, escorting him outside of the back lounge area. Sungchan did a number on him- both of his eyes were bruised and swollen, his nose was clearly broken, and it hurt to even spare a glance at his bleeding lip. Despite this, the man shot you a glare as he was forced past you.
The rest of the lounge began speaking again as if this was a normal occurrence, not at all bothered by the pool of blood you had to step over to set the drinks down. You squeezed the soju bottle as you attempted to hide your shaking hands.
“I hope the soju is fine. If not, here’s a Shirley Martian,” you set the glass down, avoiding his gaze and staring intently at the drinks. “Can I get you anything else, sir?”
He tsked, and you felt your anxiety rising with every breath you took.
“Sorry I’m late, boss,” Yuta brushed past you, and you didn’t miss the glare that flashed across Sungchan’s eyes. Yuta sat in the booth across Sungchan and smiled your way. “Could you grab me some napkins?”
You nodded, ignoring the blood he had on his hands as you handed him the napkins you kept in your waist apron.
Without turning his gaze from Yuta, Sungchan snapped, “sit.”
There was an awkward pause, and Yuta looked over at you with an expression that mirrored your confused one. Sungchan too turned to look at you, his gaze softening immediately.
“Sit, please,” he repeated, visibly straining to be polite. You tightened your lips and looked at the pair sitting opposite each other, both seemingly fixated on where you were going to sit.
Reminding yourself of the fact that this was Sungchan’s club and he was the one who requested your assistance tonight, you sat on the same side as him, albeit as far away from him as you possibly could. Despite this, you didn’t miss the twinkle in Sungchan’s eyes as you did so.
