You let your phone drop to the bathroom counter, blinking slowly, unable to fathom the conversation that had just taken place. Had he really just said those things? Scrolling through the texts confirmed that yes, he had indeed. The bastard.
Charles had always been the jealous type. But attacking you like that when he had been the one to… It was absolutely ridiculous. Apparently he still couldn’t—or wouldn’t—grasp the depths of how much he had actually hurt you.
You’d loved him with all of your heart. Until he had ripped it out and hurled it to the floor, letting it shatter into a million tiny pieces. Yet, even then, you would’ve forgiven him. If only he’d apologised. If only he’d shown true remorse. But he hadn’t. And so you’d been forced to walk the path of mending your own heart, and move on with your life.
Perhaps a small part of you had hoped that he could be happy for you. That somehow, even after everything, you would be able to greet each other normally—that you could coexist peacefully. But as his texts just now had demonstrated, that wasn’t going to happen. Not right now. And definitely not next week in Texas. You sighed. It would’ve been too good to be true, anyway. Especially considering who you were currently seeing…
A light knock sounded at the door, startling you out of those thoughts.
“Are you almost ready to go, darling?” a male voice asked, soft.
Right. Dinner. Celebrations.
You had been in the midst of applying the finishing touches to your makeup and outfit before Charles had interrupted, quite literally shocking you to the core when his name had appeared on your lock screen. He’d been the last person you’d expected to hear from today.
You swallowed the bitter taste that Charles’ texts had managed to leave behind. He wasn’t worth it, you repeated to yourself. You weren’t going to let his shenanigans ruin a perfect night—a perfect date. You ran a hand through your hair and readjusted the necklace around your neck when the bathroom door creaked open behind you.
Looking up, your eyes met your handsome, new boyfriend’s through the mirror. He was smiling, eyebrows raised in silent question, ever patient as he waited for you to finish up. You felt your pulse quicken at the sight of him, dressed to perfection in a dark suit, hair neatly tousled.
As always, his presence was able to reassure you within the blink of an eye, the tense muscles in your neck and shoulders relaxing as you gladly let all of your complex emotions fall away.
“Yes,” you nodded, a genuine smile spreading across your lips. “I’m ready.”

THE END
but who is she with? well, there’s a little (and not so subtle) easter egg that refers back to the beginning of part 6 that will confirm certain things… have you spotted it?
thank you everyone for coming along on this ride! it’s been a hell of a lot of fun writing and creating this story 🥰 my apologies to all the y/n x charles shippers out there, but as our songbird said: here’s to the end and new beginnings…

Remus Lupin x reader words; 3477 warnings; werewolf, murder part one here I'd suggest reading part one first! again, I wrote this on my phone so thats my excuse for any mistakes :) i will most likely be making an alternate ending type deal sorta thing because an amazing human gave me an awesome idea so that will be linked to this when it comes out (comment if u wanna be tagged in it) i made you a lion because why not and i made you close with Severus as well
Tumblr media
“Professor!”
I smiled as I walked through the doors, “Harry, why it’s almost dinner, what are you doing?”
“He's recovering from the dementor.” Hermione said matter-of-factly and Ron groaned.
“We weren't supposed to mention that, Hermione.”
“Dementor?” I asked Harry. Obviously I had read the papers and obviously I knew Sirius escaped. Why else would I be late on the first day?
“Yes. Because of Sirius Black.” Harry explained as we all walked to the Great Hall. “You knew him, didn't you?”
“Why would I know Sirius Black?” I asked with a laugh.
“Well, you guys were in the same year.” Hermione stated.
“We're we?”
“Indeed.” We walked into the hall.
“Oh, well, I'm not sure I remember him much. I wasn't a very out-” I froze and the three looked at me in wonder.
“Is everything alright, Professor?” Harry asked.
Remus made eye contact with me and his eyes widened. He didn't know I worked here. I didn't know he worked here. He must've been hired for the DADA position after Lockhart was fired.
“Yes, of course. Sit down, you three. I supposed Dumbledore would like to start his speech soon, now that his entire staff has arrived.”
“Right, okay.”
I walked quickly up to the teachers table, flashing McGonagall a smile as I passed her. I sat next to Severus and leaned over.
“Okay so why is Remus here?”
Severus glared at me, “I'd rather not talk to you right now.”
I scoffed, “Oh shut up, you love me. We're best friends.”
He rolled his eyes, “I'm definitely your best friend.”
“Shh, Dumbledore is starting his big speech.”
“A galleon he says something inspirational.”
“I knew we were friends. You're on.”
Dumbledore cleared his throat loudly, “Welcome to another year at Hogwarts. Now, I’d like to say a few words before we all become too befuddled with our excellent feast. As I’m sure you all know from their search on the Hogwarts Express, our school is currently hosting a few dementors from Azkaban, they are present for Ministry Business.”
“Apparently Harry passed out.” I mumbled to Severus who hid his grin, I rolled my eyes.
“They are stationed at every entrance, so, for your sake, I tell you that no one is to leave the castle without permission. Dementors are not easily fooled by tricks or disguises - or even invisibility cloaks.” I glanced at Harry who shrunk in his seat.
“I warn each and every one of you to not give them an excuse to hurt you, they don’t take well to pleading. Prefects, and our new Head Boy and Girl, make sure that no students run afoul of the dementors.”
“But, you know, happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times.” I groaned in my seat as Severus’ face became smug. He held out his hand. “If one only remembers to turn on the light.” I slapped a galleon into his palm begrudgingly.
“I hate you.”
“On a happier note.” Dumbledore continued and everyone visibly deflated. “We are all pleased to welcome two new teachers to our staff tonight. First, our new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, please welcome Professor Lupin.” I sat up straight in my seat as Remus stood with a smile.
He looks different, of course, yet exactly the same. He had new scars and old scars, the one right below his eye he's had for years. He hates it, I've always loved it. I still love it.
I glanced at Severus to see him glaring at Remus. I understood completely, sometimes I wondered why he ever forgave me for the years of torment I let my friends put him through.
“A picture would last longer.” I whispered to Severus who huffed.
“I could say the same to you.” He sneered, looking at his food.
“I am sorry to announce that our previous Care of Magical Creatures teacher, Professor Kettleburn, has retired in order to spend more time with his remaining limbs. However, it is a pleasure to make it known that our very own Rubeus Hagrid will be filling his place, along with his usual gamekeeper duties.” I clapped loudly with a smile, Hagrid was my favorite. “Well, I believe that's all of importance. Let the feast begin!”
“Excuse me, Y/n.” I ignored Remus as I walked faster, hoping to avoid him as I weaved between students. He latched onto my arm, “Y/n.”
I turned around quickly, a stern look on my face, “I apologize, Professor Lupin, but teachers do refer to each other as Professor. I'm afraid my first name is simply not suitable for you to address me by, as we are colleagues, and nothing more.”
A look of hurt crossed his face and my heart tugged, “I'm sorry, Professor L/n.”
“I must be going.”
“Can we have a conversation?”
I shook my head, walking away. “I'm afraid I'm very busy with my plants and lessons.”
“Professor L/n.” Severus’ monotone voice called out.
I turned my head, “Yes?”
“May we speak momentarily?” He asked and I nodded.
“Of course.”
“What?” I heard Remus mumble before I walked into Severus’ classroom.
“Thanks for that.”
Severus walked to his desk and began writing on parchment. “For what?”
I sat down at a desk, throwing my feet on top of the table. “Saving me, duh.”
Severus glanced at my feet, “Are you a child?”
“I wish.”
“You can leave now.”
I sighed, levitating an apple from his desk to me silently and taking a loud bite from it. “Nope, he's probably waiting outside to jump you.”
“Wouldn't be the first time.” He mumbled and my smile dropped.
I moved my feet off the desk and sat up straight, “I'm sorry for never stopping them. They made your time here terrible, and it wasn't okay. Even if you deserved it sometimes.”
Severus looked up from the paper, his face softened from the usual sneer. He gave me a small smile, and it seemed to hurt him to do so. I laughed.
“What?”
“When was the last time you smiled?”
His sneer came back, “Get out.”
I rolled my eyes with a smile, “Okay okay, see you later, Severus.”
“Bye, Y/n.” I froze for a second before leaving with a smile, he's never called me by Y/n before.
“Right, yes, you may have a week extension. I expect your paper no later than Friday.” I said with a smile and the girl's face brightened.
“Thank you so much, Professor. It'll be in by next Friday, I promise.”
“Now go, the group for Hogsmeade will leave soon.” She nodded and walked off, smiling and blushing at Harry as she passed him. “Hello, Harry.”
“Hi, Professor.” Harry said, his cheeks red from the cold.
“What do you need?”
Harry looked nervous as he held up a piece of paper.
“Could you sign this for me, possibly? Please, Professor?”
I sighed as I looked at Hogsmeade permission slip, “I'm not your guardian, Harry.”
“You're as good as.”
I smiled, “While I appreciate the compliment, I'm still not. You'll have to stay behind today, I'm afraid.”
“Okay, it's okay Professor. I'm gonna go say goodbye to Ron and Hermione.” Harry walked out, nodding to someone as he passed. “Professor.”
“Do you think that if we could've taken Harry, we would've stayed together?” A deep voice asked and I tensed, shutting my eyes tightly.
“I'm not sure. I guess you'll have to ask yourself. You're the one that left, in case you don't remember.” I said coldly, staring out the window of my office to avoid eye contact.
“You won't look at me.” Remus shoved his hands in his pockets.
I shrugged, “You'll survive, I'm sure.”
“Did you help Sirius escape?”
I looked at Remus, bewildered, “Are you actually asking me that?” I stood from my desk. “The audacity you have, Remus.”
“You didn't answer me.”
I stared at him, “No, I didn't.”
“Then how is he out?”
I laughed sarcastically, “Lord if I know. You should go, I don't want to talk to yo-”
He cut me off by slamming a piece of folded parchment on my desk. I gasped at how close his face was before glancing down at the parchment.
“The Marauders Map.” I whispered, softly brushing over the paper I spent so long working on with my best friends. “I haven't seen this in years.”
“I haven't either, until I caught Harry and Snape in the hall. Harry was holding the map, he said something interesting.” I looked up.
“What did he say?”
“He said he saw Peter Pettigrew on the map.”
My eyebrows furrowed, “Peter's dead.”
Remus reached into his pocket, “Well, that's what I thought.”
It was silent while I thought before I pulled open my drawer and rummaged through papers.
“Ron he has a - uhm, he has a rat. It's a family pet, they've had it for years. Ron said it was twelve. That's awfully long for a rat to live, isn't it?”
“Twelve years? Yeah, that's long.”
I pulled out the daily prophet from the summer, the one with the picture of the Weasley family in Egypt.
I pointed at Ron, who was holding his rat, “I knew it looked familiar.” Remus leaned forward and studied the animal.
“We need to ask Ron to see Scabbers.”
I shook my head, “We can't, Scabbers ran off. Ron thinks Hermione's cat ate him.”
“Peter better wish that cat did.”
“You said you found the map with Harry and Snape. What was going on with them?”
“It's quite funny actually. Snape was trying to see into the map and instead it insulted his nose.”
My face dropped and I sat back down with a sigh. “Leave Severus alone. You can go now.”
“Since when did you call him Severus?”
“Since he was there when you weren't. I said, you can go now.”
“Are you going to kill me, Harry?” I heard Sirius say and I glanced at Remus before he burst through the door.
“Expelliarmus!” Remus yelled, causing Harry's wand to fly from his hands. I caught it midair, holding onto it tightly. Remus nudged his head and Harry squirmed away. “Well, well, Sirius, looking rather ragged, aren't we?’
I scoffed, “I think you look fine as ever, Pads.”
“Must you always argue with me?” Remus scolded and I rolled my eyes as he looked back at Sirius. “Finally the flesh reflects the madness within.’
“Well, you'd know all about the madness within, wouldn't you, Remus?” Remus lowered his wand and smiled before helping Sirius up and pulling him into a tight hug. I yelped as Sirius grabbed my shirt and pulled me In. Sirius began to cry, “I found him!”
“We know.” Remus reassured.
“He's here!”
“We understand, Siri.” I said softly.
“Let's kill him!”
“No!” Hermione yelled and my head snapped to her. “I trusted you!” She y
screamed at Remus. “And this time y-you’ve been his friend.” She turned back to her friends angrily. “He's a werewolf!”
My eyes widened, “Wow.”
“That's why he's been missing classes.”
“How long have you known?” Remus asked, stepping towards her.
“He really knows how to scare them.” I muttered to Sirius, who nodded.
“He's one for the dramatics.”
“Since Professor Snape set the essay.”
“Well, well, well, Hermione. You really are the brightest of your age I've ever met.”
“And you!” She pointed at me and stumbled back slightly. “We loved you! Since first year you've been like a mother to all of us! But you're with him?” She said defeatedly, glancing between Sirius and I.
“Hermione, things aren't the way they seem. I trust you to believe that.”
Sirius threw his hands up impatiently, “Enough talk! Come on, let's kill him!”
“Wait!”
“I did my waiting!” He screamed.
“Sirius.” I said softly, gently grabbing onto his arm.
“Twelve years of it… in Azkaban!” The floor creaked loudly as we looked back at the kids. Harry stepped back slightly.
“Very well. Kill him.” Remus decided, handing Sirius a wand. “But wait one more minute. Harry has the right to know why.”
“I know why!” The boy said angrily. “You betrayed my parents! You're the reason they're dead!”
“No, Harry, it wasn't him.” I told the boy.
“Somebody did kill your parents. But it was somebody who, until quite recently, I believed to be dead!”
“Who was it then!”
“Peter Pettigrew! And he's in this room! Right now!” I glanced at Scabbers who squirmed in Ron's hands as Sirius yelled. “Come out, come out, Peter! Come out, come out and play!”
I gasped as Severus came in, wand up and pointed at Sirius, “Severus, don't!”
“Expelliarmus!” The wand in Sirius’ hand clattered on the ground. “Ah, vengeance is sweet.”
“Severus, you don't understand.” I tried but he ignored me.
“How I hoped I'd be the one to catch you.”
“Severus, it…”
“I told Dumbledore you were helping an old friend into the castle, and now, here's the proof.”
Remus looked confused, “I haven't been helping Sirius.”
I took a step forward, wand in the air, “It's been me.”
“Brilliant, Snape. Once again, you put your keen and penetrating mind to the task, and as usual come to the wrong conclusion.”
I rolled my eyes, “Sirius, shut up. You've tormented him enough.”
“What?” Sirius glanced at Remus who shrugged.
“Severus, we can talk about it.” I yelped as Sirius shoved me back, Remus grabbed onto my arm to stop me from falling.
“If you'll excuse us, we have some unfinished business to attend to.” Snape pointed his wand at Sirius’ neck and Remus gasped, holding his hand to his mouth.
“Give me a reason. I beg you.”
“Severus, don't be a fool.”
“He can't help it. He comes by it naturally.”
I glared, “Sirius, I said shut up, for fucks sake.”
“Oh, shut up yourself, Y/n!”
“Oh look at you two, quarreling like an old married couple.”
“Why don't you run along and play with your chemistry set?” Sirius sneered and Severus dug his wand deeper into Sirius’ neck.
“I could do it, you know. But why deny the dementors? They're so longing to see you.” Sirius’ face flashed with disdain. “Do I detect a flicker of fear? Oh, yes. A dementor's kiss. One can only imagine what that must be like to endure. It's said to be nearly unbearable to witness, but I'll do my best.”
“Severus, please.” Remus begged as Severus pointed out the door.
“After you.” Severus nudged his head at the teens, urging them to leave. My eyes softened, he wanted to protect them as much as he wanted revenge on Sirius. I lowered my wand.
Harry took a step forward, raising Hermione's wand and pointing it at Sirius. Sirius grimaced before Harry turned it to Severus.
“Expelliarmus!” He yelled and the spell hit Severus straight in the chest, shoving him back into the old bed.
“Severus!” I ran over to the bed and levitated the top off of the man. I looked over him quickly, he seemed fine, just knocked out cold.
Ron and Hermione yelped in surprise as Harry pointed the wand at Remus, Sirius, and I, “Tell me about Peter Pettigrew!”
I sighed to myself as we walked out of the Shrieking Shack. Ron cried about his leg as Sirius apologized for it. Peter squirmed in between Remus and I.
“Y/n, may we have a proper conversation?” Remus asked quietly.
I gave him a soft smile. “Once we get outside.” He nodded and smiled back.
“Y/n, my dearest friend-”
I whacked the man with my wand, “Sock it.”
“In fact, James more than once suggested that I make the change permanent.” Sirius said. “The tail, I could live with, but the fleas are murder.”
I snorted, “Tell me about it.”
“You're an animagus too?” Harry asked, glancing back.
I nodded, “Of course, I am. Illegal though, so that's why you've never known.”
Once we got outside Peter began begging to be let go.
“Ron, I was a good friend, a good pet! You won't let them give me to the dementors, will you?” He asked and Ron grimaced in disgust, he turned to Hermione. “Oh, sweet girl, clever girl. Surely you won't let them-”
Remus pulled him away, “Get away from them.”
“Remus.” I called and he turned to me as I walked towards him and the trembling Peter. “Let's talk.”
Remus sighed, “What I did was-”
“Vile? Cruel? Totally dim witted?” I suggested with a smile.
“Yes, all of those, definitely the last one.” He shoved his hands into his pockets. “We went through something no one should have ever. Neither of us were very close with our family, all we had was our friends, and they were all taken from us in less than a month. We should've gone through that together, we should have had each other. And I'm sorry for taking that from you.”
“Remus-”
“No, it was wrong of me. I love you, Y/n. I've never not loved you.”
I glanced at the shining moon slowly coming up over the mountain, “No, Remus-"
“You don't need to forgive me-”
“Remus the moon!” I cut him off, pointing behind him.
“Harry!” Hermione called, catching the attention of the boy and Sirius.
The moonlight shone brightly on our faces, and fear settled in my stomach as I watched Remus’ pupils dilate.
“Sirius!” I called as the man rushed over.
“Remus, my old friend, have you taken your potion tonight?” Sirius questioned, coming up next to me. We held onto Remus tightly as he groaned in pain.
“You know the man you truly are, Remus!” I tried.
“This heart is where you truly live!” Sirius placed his hand on Remus’ heart. “This heart, here!”
Remus moaned loudly, pain overtaking his body. His wand dropped to the ground as he doubled over.
“This flesh is only flesh!”
“Remus!”
Sirius and I held tightly onto the man as he pushed against us. His body transformed into the ugliest of creatures as he yelled painfully. His yell slowly turned into a growl.
I turned to the kids, “Run! You guys, run and don't stop! I'm serious, now is not the time to be a hero! Go!”
Remus growled, his full form taking shape as he threw Sirius and I back. I yelled in pain as my shoulder hit a rock.
“Ah, shit.” I looked up at Sirius. “Are you alright?”
He groaned, “I've been better. When was the last time you were a lion, dear friend?”
I shrugged, “It's been a while.” My head snapped as I heard the werewolf howl and Hermione yelped. “They didn't run.”
Sirius smirked, “Did you really expect them to?”
I shook my head as he took his dog form and sprung ahead. I sighed and tried my best to become my animagus. It's been quite a while. I smiled to myself as I felt my features change and my senses become sharper. I let out the loudest roar I could muster, before jumping to help Sirius.
I watched quietly from a tree as the sun came up over the mountain. The werewolf grumbled and let out a final howl before its human form took over.
I jumped down, walking over to Remus’ body and nuzzling it with my head. He woke up, rubbing his eyes tightly.
“Y/n? Is that you?” He asked, his voice hoarse. I growled quietly, dropping a blanket into his lap to cover up before turning around, suggesting he get on my back. It'd be easier to get him to the castle as a lion, rather than a girl.
He sucked in a breath, likely gazing at the large gash across my neck.
“I'm sorry.” He whispered, his fingers grazing the cut before carefully getting onto my back.
I carefully ran up to the castle, taking a secret passage to his office. He hid completely under the blanket as I sauntered up to his room. Once we got there he carefully got off, and I immediately transformed back into a human.
I groaned at my aching muscles and went to crack my neck, but instead I was met with a sore, wounded neck.
“Ouch.” I muttered, glancing at Remus who was putting clothes on. “Are you okay?”
Remus looked at, his eyes immediately finding the wound on my neck. I felt self conscious.
“Are you?” he asked quietly, walking towards me.
I shrugged, “I'll survive. Also, I forgive you.”
Remus’ eyes softened, “You do?”
I nodded, “Yeah, I got over it.” A certain sadness came over his face. I stepped forward, our faces almost touching, “You know what I've never gotten over though?”
He leaned in slightly, his lips brushing mine, “What?”
“You.” I whispered, before kissing him. It was soft, and passionate. It made up for all the kisses I've missed these past twelve years.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto : the generational planets ✨🪐
Today’s post is about my opinion about these 3 big planets that are quite misunderstood because of their impact which can be individual and on a whole generation at the same time. I hope it will help beginners and give some insights about how to interpret some heavy placements ! (ps : english isn’t my first language, sorry if there’s too much mistakes or misunderstandings 🙏)
A “transpersonal” planet ?
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are called “transpersonal” planets. Etymologically, the prefix trans- means “across, beyond”. They transcend the personality, go through the individuality to change humanity and soul in its core. Indeed, that’s exactly what it sounds like : these planets will send the same energy to the whole world at the same time to produce a global change.
You’ll answer me that every planet does so. Indeed, yes. When the Full moon is in Leo, the moon shares the same fiery energy to everyone. And, because of the velocity of these little planets and luminaries, it will influence everyone’s individuality for some days, some weeks in some cases. But, with transpersonal planets, the impact is more of a chemical change, like it’s changing the whole constitution of an environment.
Metaphorically, whereas the other planets will act like waves in the ocean to modify for a brief time its strength or calmness, transpersonal ones will have an impact on the Ph of the water, the constitution of the molecules, and THAT will impact all the fishes - without them not even acknowledging it sometimes.
Generational planets ?
As they’re very slow, their influence impact a whole generation. On the following list, I’ll explain how long each one stays in a sign before moving to the next one, and I’ll also explain the context of their discovery and how it expresses well the energy they spread.
Uranus needs 84 years to make a complete orbit. It stays 7 years in a sign.
It was discovered in 1781, era of the Age of Enlightenment, between the American revolution and the French one.
=> community, liberties, revolutions, new ways of living and thinking…
Neptune needs 165 years to make a complete orbit. It stays approximately 14 years in a sign.
Discovered in 1846, it chooses well its era to be found. 19th century is the peak of spiritualism, mediums and other divinations which were still condemned a few decades earlier.
It’s also a major era for art. The end of the 19th century has shown some open-mindedness : news ways of painting and writing were democratized, accepting some liberties in the way artists were expressing their feelings.
Pluto needs 248 years to make a complete orbit. It stays approximately from 12 to 30 years in a sign.
It was discovered in 1930, between the two world wars. It was the period of fascists regimes, abuses of power and death. It empowers primal instincts, chemicals, lies and destruction. Often related to atoms, quantum physics…
Disclamer : Yes, Pluto is one of the greatest source of power, and yes it has been used badly. However, with good intentions, this planet also purifies and transcends to help us regenerate, like a phoenix from the ashes.
An insight of 2024 ?
With all of this, how these 3 planets will influence our present ?
✨ Uranus is in Taurus ♉️ 2018-2026
Correlating to what we’ve seen previous times Uranus were in Taurus, we can guess that governments will try to pursue traditions and stubborn ways of governing.
Uranus isn’t at ease in Taurus so it diminishes its power. However, we could see some revolts about earth, agriculture, climate… The Taurus energy will increase the desire to possess things, to ensure a materialistic life, and Uranus presence will provoke some crisis about it. To resume, it creates another relationship with nature.
✨Neptune is in Pisces ♓️ 2012 - 2025
Each time Neptune is in Pisces, the accent is put on health. From Pasteur in the 19th century to the rise of alternative medicines nowadays, we continue to observe this tendency. We’ve also seen a lot of improvement about mental health these last years. It’s also the end of a cycle. Some values are discussed, tolerance between all religions for example. Global spirituality is fostered. Meditation and hypnosis, dreams, are placed in the center of this reflection. We also have to be careful : Neptune is the ruler of illusions so, in Pisces, we have to stay realistic.
✨Pluto is in Aquarius ♒️ 2024-2044
First of all, you should know that Pluto will come back in Capricorn from September to November. Because of how violent Pluto’s energies can be, the planet goes back and forward in a new sign to soften the transition. Then, what could mean a Pluto in Aquarius ? It requires liberty, freeing ourselves from traditions and hierarchy. There could be some revolts and new ways of organizing societies and communities. New technologies and new ways of communication will appear.
It’s the end of this post ! I hope it was instructive for some of you ✨ I’ll try to explain how they can influence an individual chart by explaining their transits in another post these next days 🌷 Thank you for reading me 🙏

On the Road, Just the Two of Us
Chapter Eight: At Our Destination, Not Just the Two of Us
Masterpost | First | Previous | Ao3
Summary: This was written for @dukeceit-week-2024, @dukeceitweek
Janus and Remus are living in a campervan at the moment. Are they going somewhere? Who knows. The only thing that’s important is that they’re together.
Content Warnings: Flirting, Kissing, Bickering between the twins
🌻🌻🌻🌻
“I don’t want this to end,” Remus admitted quietly.
“I know, darling.” Janus didn’t look over at his boyfriend, too focused on the GPS that told him they were only five minutes away from their destination.
“Can’t we just drive past and keep going?”
“No, dear. It was fun and I loathe to admit I wouldn’t mind if this trip was longer, but we need to go back at some point. I can only take off time from work for so long and we do still need the money. Even if we were to live like this full time. I don’t think I’d enjoy it on a permanent basis, actually.”
Remus sighed, leaning heavily into his seat.
“Yeah, I know. Me too, actually. I can’t sculpt like this. Or paint on the scale I’d like. I know it’s for the best, but still… I don’t wanna deal with the responsibilities again.”
“I cannot relate to that at all.” Janus moved his hand to Remus’ thigh and squeezed. “It’s going to be fine. You focus on your art and let me deal with all the annoying paperwork and bills.”
“You’re gonna be busy again,” Remus accused, though it was in a lighter tone. He was indeed upset at that fact, but he also knew that it was necessary.
“Yes. That’s probably not going to change for a long while.”
“I know. It sucks ass.”
“It does.”
The GPS announced the last turn they would have to make before they’d reach their destination at the end of the road.
“We’ll find the time to do something like this again, promise,” Janus said. “Not every year, not even every other year but we’ll do it again.”
“I’ll cut you if we don’t.”
“Sounds fair.”
They drove the last stretch of their journey in silence, just enjoying each other’s company and reflecting on the past three month on their own.
It had been the most freeing time in Janus’ life.
He was going to miss it.
He pulled the van into a free parking spot outside a lovely, old hotel. The location of the wedding.
“Are you ready?” he asked Remus. His boyfriend huffed.
“One last thing.” Remus pulled Janus over to him, practically lifting him from the driver’s seat and onto his lap, before sealing their lips together. It was unusually sweet for him, no tongue involved.
They parted a few minutes later.
“Now I’m ready,” Remus grinned and Janus chuckled.
“Then let’s go.” He leaned over to grab the keys from the ignition before climbing out of Remus’ lap and out of the passenger door. Remus followed after him, but not without commenting on how good his butt looked.
“There you are! Finally!” The car door wasn’t even closed behind them before Roman was stalking over to them, looking close to furious. “Do you have any idea what time it is? You were supposed to be here yesterday!”
“What a nice welcome,” Janus commented dryly, causing Remus to burst out in giggles and Roman to glare at him.
“Sorry, Ro-bro, but we got turned around.”
“Oh, really?” Roman asked, obviously not convinced, his arms crossed.
“No, he saw a flyer for a carnival and begged me to go.”
“It was super fun, I almost puked on one of their rides! So worth it.”
“I cannot believe you two! A carnival, really?! The rehearsal dinner for your wedding is in two hours! Two hours! And you both look like you haven’t showered in a week!”
“Don’t be dramatic, it was only five days.” Roman groaned and Remus smiled at him, delighted by his annoyance.
“I do not know why you didn’t get a better van! One with a shower! Janus is a lawyer for goodness’ sake, you could’ve easily afforded it!”
“Yeah, but that wasn’t the aesthetic we were going for!”
“I am so going to strangle you!”
“Oh, look, the grooms finally made it,” a new voice commented, and Janus turned to see that Virgil, his best man, had joined them. “Roman was going up the walls since yesterday, it was hilarious to watch.”
“I can’t imagine that at all.” Janus smirked. “You seem quite calm though. Usually you would be right there with him, worrying your pretty little head off about everything.” Virgil elbowed him in the arm for that and rolled his eyes.
“Why would I stress myself out about your wedding? You already paid for all of this, so it’s not like it would’ve been a loss for me if you didn’t end up showing. Plus, I know the two of you, of course nothing here would go to plan, especially since Roman did most of the planning. I was sure you’re going to turn up late, if just to spite him. Hell, I wouldn’t put it past you to have arrived here like two days ago and you’ve just stayed in the van ten minutes from here until you could be fashionably late. I’m more surprised you showed up for the rehearsal at all. Second plus, Logan’s been weirdly insistent that you’d be here around this time. I think Remus has been texting him updates.”
“Why should we put so much effort into a wedding Roman wanted more than us? We would have been fine with getting an officiant into our backyard during a barbeque. He insisted on something more ‘meaningful.’” Janus rolled his eyes and Virgil snickered.
“He and his high standards. Anyway, let’s get you inside and under a shower. You reek.”
“Why, thank you Virgil, for telling me that so politely.”
“Fuck off and just come along.”
They started off towards the hotel, closely followed by the twins that were still arguing.
“And what the hell was that text about sunflowers in the bouquet?” Roman huffed, still rather worked up. “You can’t expect me to change that on such short notice! And they would have clashed with the other colors, plus they stand for platonic affection, not romantic!”
“The fuck you mean ‘short notice?’ I asked you about that two and a half months ago!”
“Yes, way too late! I added some sunflowers to the decorations but not the bouquet.”
“Wow, thank you for your sacrifice.”
They continued to bicker like that the entire way. When they reached the entrance to the hotel, Virgil pulled the door open and held it for them all to pass. Janus let the twins go first, since Roman seemed about to explode if he didn’t get Remus ready immediately. Janus watched them disappear further into the building when Virgil lightly shoved his shoulder with his own.
“So, you ready to get married?” he asked.
Janus watched Remus laugh loudly and pulling his brother into a hug and he smiled.
“I was ready to marry him years ago.”
🌻🌻🌻🌻
This is the end of the story! Thank you all so much for reading, reblogging, tagging and commenting 💛💚

Will Byers Analysis - Between S3 & 4
Something I always think about, is how Will probably didn't even know Mike and El were back together at the end of season 3.
When they had last spoke, part of Will probably thought Mike was talking about something else, which is understandable bc both him and Mike were speaking in code, whether they realized it or not (I didn’t say it/You didn’t have to).
At the very least, Will thought things could go back to how they used to between them; friends (best friends).
When the Byers arrived to Cali, I imagine within the first day, or within the first few days after they settled, it was most likely Jonathan who made the move to phone the Wheelers to talk to Nancy.
Then maybe Will decided he would call Mike once the phone was free or even asked Jonathan to have Nancy just hand the phone to Mike so they could catch up too.
But once Mike got on the phone, something was off. He sounded kind of distant and awkward and it left Will feeling confused.
Maybe Will tried to chock it up as them just needing to get used to living far away from each other, since this distance thing was indeed new for them. They'd been friends for the last decade and hadn't experienced being apart for longer than a week (the week of his disappearance). So, it was bound to be a little weird, for a little while. Right?
But honestly, just thinking about their fight in s3 and the events leading up to it, I wouldn't blame Will for being slightly worried.
Before the rain fight, Will was putting almost all of the time and effort into their relationship. He was fighting for it and Mike was leaving him behind. And that really hurt Will.
And that's what's honestly so incredible about Will's arc in s4, because he's not putting himself through that again.
Yes, he's growing up and he's matured, but he's also come to accept that, based on Mike's actions as of recent (despite what he might have sensed from Mike over the years), those romantic feelings he has for him will NEVER be reciprocated. If he's lucky, Mike will still want to be his friend, and he would be relieved to stay in his life in that way if it's something Mike still wants.
(Which also makes the GA's argument about how they think Will's arc in s5 is going to be about him accepting that Mike will never love him back, fall flat??? Because, Will's already realized that, sis. S4 ending the way it did was in part to make as clear as possible to Will (the unreliable narrator) that Mike cannot love him that way... And so why the hell would s5 confirm that for a second (3) time now? Where is the shock? Where is the value? What is satisfying about that? And why do that, while also holding off on Mike finding out about Will's feelings until the very end? Like... just let that simmer for a second and think about what that actually means in terms of the story going in a satisfying direction that also manages to surprise you... there is literally nothing satisfying about proving Will 'I'm not gonna fall in love' Byers, right...)
So, after about a week since they last spoke on the phone since arriving, a bunch of letters come in the mail: one for Jonathan, four for El, and three for Will (you can probably guess who from the party didn't send a letter to Will...).
And it's as if Will's worst fears are being (re)realized.
In his casual letter exchanges between the party, he talks about DnD and a new art class he's taking with Dustin, joining the basketball team with Lucas and how everything she'd told him about California was right with Max. Super casual catching up with some of his best friends. And yet still, nothing from Mike, arguably his best friend.
And so Will is understandably devastated.
He doesn't understand. Or maybe he does, he just didn't want to believe it.
And so, how Will chose to go about his contact with Mike over the next 'year' makes sense to me (and I support him fully tbh).
I think Will's arc in s4 is beautiful because he has some of the best development of anyone on the entire show. He's not the gay kid being used as a plot device for a heterosexual couple (stay tuned for s5). If anything, we're seeing this character who tried his best to mend his friendship with his best friend (also secret first love) after Mike presumably rejected him (ITS NOT MY FAULT YOU DON'T LIKE GIRLS!), and so, Will is not going to put himself through that again.
He's not going to let himself have hope that there could ever be something more between them, even if he thought so many times before there were moments or signs that Mike could feel the same (BC MIKE DID!!). He has already accepted it's not possible.
He's not going to 'stand in the way' anymore. If Mike wants to be with El, he's going to support them, even if it hurts him and his own feelings.
It's tragic, but it feels so in character for Will and his qualities as a person.
I know a lot of bylers argue that both Mike and Will were in the wrong when it came to them both not staying in touch, and I do agree, completely actually. Especially knowing Mike tried to call Will. HE TRIED. So it's not like he didn't. The miscommunication trope is doing it's magic. We just have to accept that.
And so, fittingly, when confronted, Mike doesn't tell Will he called (a lot). He lets Will think that he barely called and deflects and pushes it back on Will. But then almost instantly, he regrets it. Because it's in this moment he's only now realizing that Will did want to talk and missed him and is quite literally confused why they're not best friends any more. And suddenly it's all clicking. He knows deep down Will has every reason to be insecure, to not reach out to Mike after what happened last summer. It's just that he also thought Will had every right to move on because why wouldn't he, what's so great about Mike? Will could have anyone? Mike was so distracted by his own insecurities that Will had inevitably moved on, while also trying to hide his feelings, that he didn't realize Will actually did miss him. They've both got it all wrong.
As of now, we don’t know for sure if Will called at all, and so me assuming he called first, is just that, an assumption. But I’m giving Will the benefit of the doubt here. (It's also likely the Byers would have called the Wheeler's first because they know their number by heart most likely, while the Wheelers would've had to wait to get their new number).
Based on the story presented though (Will's unreliable narrator POV), he had a lot more reason to doubt Mike wanted anything to do with him. Will literally spent all of s3 fighting for their friendship, even if it meant coming off as slightly clingy and annoying and ‘childish’. And look how that turned out?
What else was Will to do in this situation? Just repeat all of his behavior in s4?
Was he just supposed to call Mike first, write him letters first, even though Mike was showing repeat signs of wanting to distance himself from him again?
And so, Will waits. He waits for Mike to make the next move, just in case his insecurities are right and that Mike doesn't want them to be best friends like they used to be.
One evening, about a month since the move, the phone rings and Will answers it. It's Mike.
Will is obviously surprised and thrilled. They talk for a bit, and yeah it's awkward. But still, it gives Will hope.
Now, it's still not enough to give Will the confidence to reach out first, fearing he'll come off too strong and scare Mike away again, and so he continues to give Mike space. But that doesn't stop this gesture from giving Will the inspiration to try one more thing, one last ditch effort to save their friendship; he's going to make Mike a painting.
So, all while watching El receive a new letter in the mail every few weeks or so, with him and Mike talking once (or if he's lucky maybe twice) a month over the phone, Will spends his time working on the painting, knowing that Mike used to appreciate his drawings when their friendship was at its strongest. And so, maybe this will be the thing that finally fixes things for them once and for all?
All too soon, it's Spring break and they're at the airport waiting for Mike to land.
In the months leading up to their reunion, Will made sure no one saw the painting he was working on, least of all El. Not even because he was scared she might figure out his feelings, but because he wanted it to be a surprise. We also know Will presumably had no problem with the others seeing the painting eventually because he literally brought it to the airport for Mike to open in front of all of them? And so... to him this was clearly an attempt at platonic reconciliation, even despite Will having romantic feelings for Mike. What he wanted was their friendship back.
But suddenly, Mike is standing before him and Will is so excited he can't hold back anymore. I mean, he's been holding back for MONTHS and he just wants to hug his best friend.
But then Mike is being awkward again, almost like he doesn't want to even touch Will at all, contrasting greatly from the last time they hugged during their goodbye only just a year ago (6 months they're so dramatic, i swear).
All this does is prove to Will that, despite them apparently ending on good terms, it seems Mike is just repeating last summer all over again.
Understandably, Will jumps to this conclusion fairly quickly, as his insecurities are being proven right in real time. Mike doesn't want the friendship they used to have. He doesn't want to hug, doesn't want to write to him, barely even called despite writing El a book worth of letters. He wants to talk to and focus on his girlfriend and Will is just an afterthought now.
There's no way he's gonna want this? A painting? Not a chance in hell.
So when Mike points to it and asks him about it nervously, Will panics and brushes it off.
How could he be so naive. Mike is making it SUPER clear he doesn't care about him, not like he used to. And still he's holding onto some misguided hope that maybe there's still a chance for them to be best friends.
How could he be so stupid.

Hello my dear friend, I cordially come to ask for an Ask. As you can imagine from my requests I'm not a big fan of the famous Yae Miko, so I wanted a M!Reader that has a problem with Yae Miko and doesn't hide it, when she arrives he leaves, when she tries to talk he just ignores her. And the explanation for this would be why she provoked him (We all know that she has a certain hobby of teasing others) in a horrible situation (Like the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship) and he took it to heart . And he always looked like a normal person with no vision, but when Yae was teasing a younger person (Above 18 of course) she witnessed the sword art of M!Reader who is currently the best swordsman in the world, and that he would attack to kill because the person she was teasing was his younger brother, and he would hate for her to break his heart with her teasing. And would he keep attacking and tearing everything in two on the way, electricity? redirected, outside interference? Just balancing combat, raiden shogun itself? Two swords and pray you don't get hit by either blade. And he completely dominates the fight, pressing Yae to a point where she really thought it would be her end, but the Brother of M!Reader stopped him explaining that he knew about Yae's provocations but he wasn't taking it seriously, narrowly saving his life. from Yokai. And the M!Reader wouldn't care if Sara or Raiden had gotten in the way, he would just hold his brother's hand and walk away as if nothing had happened, what would be the reaction of both Yae and the ''Powers'' of inazuma with such an event? And I got a little carried away, sorry
The Shrine Incident Imagines
A/N: Hello! Cordially it indeed was. So extensive, in fact, that I decided to try out a new format - this time more true to its core idea - imagines! First time doing the real thing, so I hope everyone likes it.
CW: Male!Reader.

Miko would be surprised to say the least.
Yes, she indeed knew that annoying the army's second in command, just after his unit suffered heavy losses in the war, wasn't right. But she never expected to face actual consequences for her actions. She never did. The most Sara usually did was huff, flap her wings a bunch and leave when Miko amused herself at the Tengu's expense.
And to think a human could have a worse temper than a Tengu…
Miko never expected him to have a Vision. Unlike many others, he chose to hide it instead of showcasing it to the world, as a surprise element, Miko thought. And she suffered quite the shock one day indeed.
She was just minding her own business, or rather making others uncomfortable and miserable for fun. A young soldier came to the shrine to pray. As he was leaving, Miko did her thing - caught his attention and marveled at his shy and uncomfortable reactions when she got too close and personal, both physically and in conversation. And then…
Leave the boy alone, the man said. She looked at him with a mocking smile. Or what?
He approached closer, standing barely a few inches away. He repeated his order. Leave. Him. Alone.
Miko then huffed, annoyed at his rough tone. Ordering Kitsune, are we? You are either bold, or just not that gifted in the mind.
What Miko didn't expect was him drawing his blade. He repeated the words one more time, but Miko summoned her weapon in response. Before she could give him a scolding speech, he already moved towards her. She summoned her shield, but it was shattered with a Pyro-infused strike, throwing her back. She quickly got to her feet, shaking the shock of the resistance she has not experienced from a mortal in hundreds of years.
She moved on to attack, but the resonance between their visions made anything she threw at him next to useless. Even worse, he seemed to have a great deal of experience in using his vision in combat, as would be expected from a warrior of such high standing. Miko had to push down her pride and call for the shrine guards to help.
The Kitsune expected them to be cut to pieces, but instead, the general stunned and disabled them without lethal blows. A strike with the flat side of the sword to the head was enough to knock down many guards, coupled with vicious kicks and punches. A few minutes were enough to turn a group of trained professionals into a mumbling mess on the floor, clutching their hurt heads and broken limbs. Miko growled in frustration - those humans were useless…
Just as she was about to call Sara, a new face appeared on the mountain top. A younger man, dressed in uniform as well. Quite similar to the general, who was now holding Miko against a wall in his iron grasp. He stretched out his arm at the general. "Y/N! Don't hurt her!"
Y/N eased his grasp, letting Miko get a few gasps of air in.
"I'm sure she didn't know!"
"Know about what exactly?" Miko responded.
Y/N turned at her, and practically growled out the words. "That man has lost his parents in the war, and came here to pray for their souls. And you, Yokai, have the nerve to strike at him in such a grim situation?"
Miko looked down, and for the first time in a hundred years, felt ashamed of herself.
"Forgive me, general. I didn't know."
"You should ask him for forgiveness, Miko." Y/N dropped her to the ground, and left with his brother.
Sara arrived shortly after the incident, and was understandably angry at Y/N. She was going to call him into court, until she learned all the details. The Tengu gladly crumpled up and discarded the file. She whipped up a new sheet of paper, and began writing a call for payment to the Guuji. It was her fault, and so it should be her wallet that covers the medical bills.
The story was… honestly amusing to Ei. She had known Miko for quite a long time, and the moments when she got her due were always fun to hear about, even if the Archon didn't admit it openly.
Both women, however, agreed on keeping a closer watch on Y/N. It was fine, as long as the small disagreement remained a one-off event.

Selena was just glad that she had her darling Fabio. The dog has grown so much bigger in a few months, and now wears a long, flowing mane like his namesake. But that was the dog’s great glory, and Selena had nothing going on in her own life at all. Sadly, Andre wasn’t calling as much as she hoped. He wasn’t calling ever. She had initiated every conversation they’d had since August, and she was beginning to feel clingy and desperate. She didn’t like that. She needed to go out and get some fresh air, and her friends were happy to oblige.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group of them dressed to impress, and they went out dancing. But they all teased her, “If you come out to the club dressed like Pollyanna, you’re bound to catch yourself a dork.”
They weren’t wrong, actually. Was it the plaid, the elbow patches, or the cable-knit turtleneck? Selena’s look did indeed attract a dork, but he was a very distinguished and professorial type of dork. To be honest, that didn’t turn Selena off, and she had no intention of telling him to get lost.
Tumblr media
“Does that seat belong to your boyfriend?” he asked.
“I’m here with my friends,” she said. “Nope, no boyfriend. Not here, anyway. We’re long distance. I’m not sure it’s working out.”
“That’s a shame,” he said, looking like he didn’t believe it was a shame at all. “Might I borrow you for a chat then?”
Tumblr media
They left the cacophony of the dance floor for a quieter place to talk. His name was Martin Harwood and he was the new visiting law professor at Sierra Nova University.
“I graduated from there two years ago,” she said.
“I just missed you. What did you study?”
“Culinary arts.”
“I admire that so much. I’m a terrible cook. But I suppose it’s for the best that I missed you. If you were still a student, it wouldn’t be right for me to ask for your number.”
His interest in her was nice, after months of neglect from Andre. He was serious, maybe a little smug, or maybe a little smarmy. She had no idea if he was nice or cruel, generous or greedy, honest or conniving. She knew nothing about him at all except that he was thirty-three years old and different from every other man she’d dated before. (Okay, fair enough, she’d only dated two men before.) But maybe she was in the mood to try something different.
Tumblr media
Selena was unsure whether months of apathy on Andre’s part signaled the end of this tragic romance they were dragging through the dirt. Maybe she should just put them out of their misery. Except she was pretty sure he wasn’t miserable over it, only she was. She had really wanted Andre to be the one. She wanted him to call her in the middle of the night and plead for her and say that he couldn’t live without her another moment longer. But that just wasn’t happening.
She read too many romance novels, maybe. She’d filled her head with fantasies.
“Yes, Professor Harwood, you can have my number.”
And if he called her before Andre did, that would be Andre’s fault.

Oh yes. What kind? Uh. Well. Everything from the schmoopiest first time possible to all-orifices fucking with magical tentacles, sooo? All of it?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I HAVE WRITTEN SO MANY AND WILL WRITE SO MANY MORE. The craziest crossover I ever wrote is a 5-fandom crossover - set in the Sandman universe. I pulled in characters from the Hades Game, Supernatural, Shadowhunters, and Good Omens in and had all of them face off against Hell! The War for the Dreaming
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Unfortunately, yes, multiple times. I wish that on no person.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yup!!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A great many, in multiple fandoms!! Shout out to awesome co-authors who keep me sane!!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Omg I can't pick a FAVORITE. I've had so many over the years, I don't know if I ever could truly pick a favorite. Malec probably comes pretty damn close though, all things considered.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Candy Coated Nightmare. I want to finish it from the perspective of wanting to finish the story - but when the original creator of the gif story quit the fandom due to their work being stolen and stopped the project - finishing the story without them didn't seem right. So while I want to finish it to finish the story - I never will.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I've learned how to hack my ADHD brain and trigger hyperfocus whenever I want using a writing software. Which means I can write very obscene amounts of words, very quickly. (Also experience - I've been doing this for 23+ years now.)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Editing and research. I hate editing, so none of my fics receive more than a cursory read-through at best. And having to heavily research a fic is what kills my enthusiasm for it faster than anything else, so I avoid it at all costs and make up things as I go along whenever that is an option.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Love the idea - but i think you gotta use the AO3 feature that allows you to put the translation when you click/hover over it!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Wheeew, we're going back to 2004, okay. Gundam Wing was my first ever fandom I wrote for.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
How the hell am I supposed to pick? I love Make It Count because that fic (all 120k) wrote itself. I love Together We Soar because it was the first long fic I wrote myself. (Long for me, anyways.) I love Alexander is Endlessly Surprising because I wrote 2 full sets of the Oldest Game and I thought I did an AWESOME job. I love The War for the Dreaming because it was an insane undertaking and I managed it. I love Magnus Bane: Certified BAMF because it introduced my favorite OC of all time - Oberon Onyx. So many more I could name, but I'll leave it there, at least for now!
Tagging @moorishflower, @cuubism, @blueberrymffn, @seiya-starsniper and anyone else who wants to participate!!

Feysand Week Day 3
Tumblr media
Feyre grimaced after taking her second shot of the evening, making Mor and Cassian giggle. The party was in full swing by now and both of her friends are set on getting Feyre drunk. "It's your birthday!" they are telling her, "You're free!"
She supposed she was and she supposed she should celebrate her freedom after leaving Tamlin. Yes, Feyre knew they were right but she wasn't into celebrating her birthdays, she never found them important enough after a childhood full of forgotten birthdays. Cassian and Mor wanted to show Feyre the magic of birthday parties but if getting drunk was the best way? She doubted it. Feyre shook her head, catching a glimpse of the poster that her friends hung up for the party. "Can we take this down now?" Feyre asked, pointing to her mugshot.
Mor laughed as Cassian replied, "Absolutely not! This day needs to be remembered forever!"
"It's been almost six years!" she told them, suppressing a smile.
Mor slapped her hand on the table in a mock gesture, "I don't know why you want to forget! You were fully in your right to punch Ianthe in the face. She deserved it! Embrace it, bestie!"
Feyre rolled her eyes, "I didn't punch her! It was a slap!" she told her as the song that blasted out of the speakers came to an end, and a new one started. Cassians gaze fell behind Feyre and he stood up.
"My brother is here! I'll be back Ina sec."
Feyre nodded as Mor filled her shot glass again, "Don't look like that, only that one. I know you don't like celebrating your birthday, Feyre, so let's celebrate how far you've come since you left you're toxic hometown." she pushed one glass towards Feyre and raised the other, "To my friend who I am very proud of!"
Feyre huffed, blinking away tears, and they clinked their glasses. She threw back that shot as Cassian stopped back at their table, "Feyre, may I introduce you to Rhysand?"
"You may," she replied, fixing the cheap plastic crown on her, "It's nice to meet y-" she stopped as she locked eyes with a male who was beautiful beyond reason, smiling at her with his hands in his pockets. Feyre swallowed, she recognized him. From her memories, from her dreams. She had thought she had him much more beautiful in her memories because she was under the influence of alcohol back then but her memories didn't even come close to the man standing before her. "I– I know you!" she blurted out.
He raised his eyebrows in question, a smile tugging at his beautiful lips. "Oh?"
"Yup!" Feyre giggled, a wave of happiness rolling over her, "You arrested me at Rita's six years ago! In Velaris!" she exclaimed so loudly over the music that heads turned her way. She ignored them, scooting to the side to make room for him. "Sit down, officer...uh..."
"Rhysand." he told her, sitting down. Cassian took the seat across from them and her friends watched them in amusement. "But please call me Rhys."
"Okay, officer Rhys," he opened his mouth but Feyre kept talking, "How is it going? Still a cop?"
"I–yes, I am." he replied, taking a drink from Mor. "What about you? I heard you're an artist."
"Indeed, I am." Feyre straightened proudly, "I am working with Ressina and I went to art school in New York." she nodded to herself, "You must train a lot as a cop. You definitely look like you do."
Amusement danced in his eyes, "A few times a week." he replied.
"Cool, cool, cool," she said, "Very impressive. Must be hard, I couldn't do that. I mean I could if I wanted to but I don't."
Rhys chuckled, "It's not for everyone." Feyre nodded in agreement. He leaned back in his seat, relaxed, "Do you do commissions?"
"Why? Do you want one?" Feyre asked, brushing a fleck of invisible dust from her jeans. "I can give you my number and we can talk about specifics tomorrow if–"
"If?" Rhys asked, taking a sip of his drink.
Feyre leaned forward, pointing to the group of people who danced, "If you dance with me, officer Rhys."
Rhys smiled brightly, "It would be an honor, Feyre darling." he laughed softly, extending his hand. Feyre took it, following him into the crowd of people.
The next morning Feyre woke up with a message from an unknown number.
>> Hey, it's Rhys

04/12/2022 Devlog
Helloooo everyone! Just popping in with a quick update for everyone who only follows Steamberry here. This one will be quick but I just wanted to let you all know where things stand with the next route.
Reuben's route is fully drafted and the first revision is done up to the start of chapter 10.
Doing a lot of rewriting for this route so I know I'll have to do a second revision pass when this one is done. Since there is a criminal case being explored, it just means there are a lot of working parts to the story and a lot of components to keep track of. So if I make even a small change on one chapter, it causes a cascade effect of additional changes needed. LoL.
But despite the massive amount of content being rewritten, I'm going at a pretty steady pace of 1.5 - 2 chapters a week. So Yeah! That's where we are. I'm not sure I'll be done revising by the end of the month but I should be done with the first round for sure. And the second round should go much faster.
I haven't started any of the art for this route other than making lists and pulling references together for new outfits and things. Just mostly focusing on writing.
And that's really it. I know this is a short update but during the writing phase there's typically very little to report other than yes, I did indeed write the things.
I do not have a release date estimate for Reuben yet. The writing is obviously the biggest hurdle but these are big routes and there's still a lot to do after the writing is complete. So for now, I'm just focusing on that!
Will check back in before the end of the year to let you know where things stand. That's all for now!

PART 2: Strawberry Hospital Instagram Q&A Q: Also do you like Sky Eats Airplane? Some of your songs give me the same vibe
N: "lowkey in shock that this band was brought up to me because they were (partially) the reason I found out what a DAW was in the first place because I read some interview of theirs back then describing their method of creation or something formative memories of listening to this one on a school computer in 5th grade" Q: When making an EP, do you usually have a "concept" or "vibe" before making the songs? N: "mostly! it is typically reflective of whatever sonic fixations I had in the years preceding the release itself + a culmination of whatever emotions are stirred up by life circumstances once I have that intersection pinned down, it begins to take a form of its own"
Q: Is there a story behind the Phantasmaphilia album art? It's so mesmerizing *0* N: "indeed ! the dead insects themselves were found outside of where I was living during the completion of the album, around this time of year. myself and some old friends collected them and brought them inside to scan in for the sake of the cover artwork. as for the bathtub image source, I am actually not holding my own legs but another person (out of frame) but we were wearing swimming trunks haha I wanted to create a feeling of ghostly vulnerability and I appreciate said old friends for helping me realize my vision at the time" Q: your music heals me and makes life bearable, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️‍🩹 N: "I am so so grateful... thank you for sharing with me, it keeps me pushing forward knowing that my music reached you in the same way that other music heals me too (hug)"
Q: Squall. I love that song so much. I would love to hear your reasons for that song. N: "oh yes Squall! I wrote that for an internet friend who lived somewhere that was basically a perpetual snowstorm, I would stay up late talking with them and it meant very much to me during that period of time to me, the flurry of splittercore kicks and icy trance lead melodies reminded me of a blizzard" Q: How did you get your name? N: "strawberry hospital? or neptune? I'll answer both! strawberry hospital was intended to follow the naming trend of many bands and artists I grew up with, but also represent the otherwise polarizing thematic elements (bittwersweetness) and stylings present within the music and lyrics my name Neptune is chosen but I have kept it for over a decade now, it reminds me of the ocean and a cold planet very far away from here"
Q: Ilysm I sry if this is a dumb q but are the songs on halfawake all vocaloid or ur voice N: "awe no questions are dumb! the original release is exclusively vocaloid as I was too anxious to include my own singing in my songs in 2016. but the live version of the song is special, because I sing the chorus with my own voice instead. other albums feature a combination of my own voice and vocaloid (with exceptions)" Q: what is your bowling ball size? N: "this question is so unrelated I love it... so I cannot bowl to save my life and maybe I'm missing a double meaning here but they say a bowling ball should be 10% of your own weight right? in that case, like 12? I am unfortunate epitome of gay people failing at sports stereotype"
Q: what's your personal favorite song you've ever release?? 🖤 N: "Halfawake, Memento, Phantoma, Azure, Rhythm 0" Q: so like whats next for uu? N: "I'd love to play a few more shows before the year ends... maybe an international one? we shall see... otherwise trying to explore new forms for the project to take, I never want to reiterate what has already been established to the point of monotony heh" Q: I really love Tacit ❤️ and would love to know what it's about N: "Tacit is an apology for not being able to fulfill the role of what somebody would like you to be for them. not exactly a hard rejection but an assuring one (if such a thing exists) ... sometimes you need to use your head over your heart? I struggled with this at times p.s. it was heavily influenced by the haibane renmei OST!"
Q: Would you ever go on a tour! Californian fan here and I love you and your music :D N: "it will happen someday I am certain, playing a show in California feels obligatory (in a good way) plus I have had a few invitations from fellow musician friends that I need to take them up on" CONTINUED INTO PART 3 ON MY NEXT POST

Another JATNLP fan! I only just recently found out that the show had a fandom after giving up on trying to look for it! It was the first Disney show I ever watched and was the pipeline that led to a lot of Disney-related hyper-fixations that have stuck with me today.
Today marks the 7-year anniversary of when the show came to an end it was canceled, which SUCKS) and I will not feel ancient thinking about this show. I really hope Disney Junior acknowledges this masterpiece again, maybe not through a reboot, but through reruns, or maybe tributes, or even mentioning - The show kicked off the Disney Jr. block so I feel like it deserved way better (i.e. not being chucked off the face of the earth, ending on a cliffhanger and never being mentioned again)
Tumblr media
Hii hii!! omg another member into this silly little pit!! Welcome!
It has always been pretty small, but it was active when it was running, especially on fanfiction.net and wattpad (and Devainart ig but don't expect quality work there now,, same for wattpad maybe.) don't go to Ao3 stuff there is lowkey not great. I was apart of it when the first episode aired and when my parents allowed me on the internet!! I usually read Fanfics from FF.net about the show! And it is what drew me to actually do art lol! I was always a disney kid, my favorite program before this existed was the little einsteins and a few of the animations and shows they played on the Disney channel!
You know, I really hope they do to! Like the others shows are cool and all don't get me wrong, but ... what about my guys!! the little guys!!! I get haha yes they did make "a pirate never steals another person's property" and its not as linear of a storyline (though they TRIED in season 4) but it still remembers its lore. ALSO YEAH OK SO I WASN'T GOING INSANE DKJSJK It was indeed the kick-off show to start off Disney Junior from Playhouse Disney and I find it really sad that the only remnants of it you can find in the park (WDW) is like in the film roll on the wall in of the gift shops in the animation section of Hollywood studios. Other than that Disney likes to ignore it, I'm hoping it's going to at least maybe in "Once Upon a Studio" I think that would be cool SINCE YOU KNOW,.,. IT IS PRETTY HEAVILY ASSOCIATED WITH PETER PAN AND HIS UNIVERSE. Like yeah, it's Disney TV animation specifically made for a younger audience but it still matters!! it's literally still Disney goddamn it. ahem ok back to normal.
You know i do question why they ended it with a cliffhanger. For someone to pick it up? Or they literally couldn't decide how to end it perhaps? or maybe it's shelved for now and they're like 'ah we're totally going to reboot it later maybe.' Or make a spin-off with new guys (hope not). Though I have a theory that it being kicked off the block was because 1- make way for new shows and 2- it probably had something to do with season 4 (I mean you had to admit that took a nasty dip in quality once it left Mercury Filmworks hands).
ok enough ranting for now, but once again welcome to this really small pit. I just really got back into JATNP myself and it's really lovely to see there are still (new) people who love and remember it <3

A FINDING NEMO Memory or Two
Tumblr media
FINDING NEMO was one of the first films I actually really anticipated a long while before its release.
As a kid, I would often start anticipating movies once I saw a trailer in theaters during one of my frequent movie theater visits, and then that would be it. Whenever I was on the Internet, I wasn't frequenting movie news sites or anything like that. If anything, the release of FINDING NEMO had me going on those sites more often to see what was coming. What the news was...
I first saw concept art for FINDING NEMO in a DK-published hardcover book called DISNEY: THE ULTIMATE VISUAL GUIDE. I had gotten it as a birthday gift in October 2002. I was immersed into that book, a chronological tour through Disney feature film and even park history, throwing in television stuff as well. The page spreads so inviting, and so many great images and stills from the movies, made for really well put-together arrangements. My well worn-out copy is still with me.
The final page spread detailed movies then slated for 2003 and 2004... Only concept art for FINDING NEMO appeared, no stills from the actual movie. The images depicted were Nemo peaking out from behind a coral, Marlin and Dory looking at Sydney Opera House, and a long stretch of Nemo inside the dentist office fish tank. These images completely engrossed me. Just this colorful fish movie, incoming: I always had a thing for the underwater world anyways, between the many animal books I had as a kid to the nature documentaries I'd often see on like Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and such. I was taken to two big aquariums in home state every year or so, and was always fascinated and mesmerized by all those tanks, all that aquatic life. I had PC games about it, and there was also - semi-related - that Titanic phase I went through... The ocean, the sea, it's all very neat.
(As an add-on, the other movies on that page spread were PIGLET'S BIG MOVIE, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2, HOME ON THE RANGE, and BROTHER BEAR back when it was called "BEARS".)
Then, I got MONSTERS, INC. on DVD for Christmas... And when I saw that a teaser trailer for the movie was ON THERE?? I watched it over and over, along with just about everything else on that 2-disc DVD set...
I was all about FINDING NEMO, and I caught it on opening weekend... and loved it so much, I saw it two more times in theaters, which is something I rarely got to do as a kid back in the day. Then I was somehow able to rent it the Friday before its Tuesday DVD release. Rented it, over and over, til I got the DVD and VHS for Christmas. At the time, I didn't have a DVD player in my room, it was only in the family room and my mum's room... So the VHS sufficed, despite no bonus features! In early 2004, after winning a $200 gift card to Circuit City (lol, remember that? No? You might be a young'un reading this!) from a spelling bee, I bought an extension for my Xbox - which I also got for Christmas - that allowed me to play DVDs in my room. Yes, we kids/preteens of the early 2000s had it rough, haha.
On a personal note, this movie came out when my life was in a weird flux, and I was in a part of growing older that didn't go so smoothly. Not to divulge too much, but when you're autistic, neurodivergent, and you're coming of age in the early aughts... Not the nicest time, for sure... Yeah, things weren't easy... And at the end of the year, when the movie was finally out on DVD, I was going through a very big family loss. My first one, really... So, I really gotta hand it to FINDING NEMO for being one of the things that really helped get me through all of it... Just keep swimming, indeed...
Similarly, director Andrew Stanton's sophomore Pixar effort, WALL-E, got me through another tough time in my younger days...
I would say FINDING NEMO and MONSTERS, INC. made me fall in love with the work coming out of Pixar, especially in those early days when it was the movies being made exclusively by the Lasseter circle. As a little kid, I wasn't really that much into the TOY STORY movies, but I did like A BUG'S LIFE and played the PlayStation game quite a bit. MONSTERS, INC. I remember being a blur in the theaters for other reasons... But I asked for MONSTERS, INC. on video the year after because I did remember enjoying the door vault chase, so that was enough to make me want the disc and to watch it again. I got the DVD that Christmas, and as said earlier, I think the combination of that film, the FINDING NEMO teaser and the NEMO concept art in the DISNEY: THE ULTIMATE VISUAL GUIDE book turned me into a cultist for the Luxo lamp in December 2002, haha.
Then I went back to TOY STORY and TOY STORY 2, which I had on VHS, and gave those a proper re-watch. Now that I was 10, knew what computer animation was and how it was made, and having more of an appreciation for the way visual stories were told than I did at - say - age 6 or even 8... And I fell in love with both. Then I rented A BUG'S LIFE over and over until I was able to buy the DVD... I wanna say it was sometime in 2003, maybe early 2004, but it was the "Collector's" set DVD that promoted FINDING NEMO with a giant sticker on the shiny slipcover. Hell, if I remember correctly, I bought it at a Suncoast Motion Picture Company outlet in a mall... Back when there were more than... 4 of those across the country!
And then some 9 years later, I went and saw the 3D re-release... Surprisingly, for a movie made in 2003, it was converted wonderfully to 3D. The 3D actually added a very subtle but very immersive depth of field to many of the underwater scenes, it looked fantastic. So yes, I saw FINDING NEMO four times in theaters. I'd probably see it a fifth if it gets re-released for whatever reason, again.
It's a favorite of mine.
Hey, I once did a video essay on it, too!

Happy 20th Anniversary.

So. Sansûkh. Indeed Sansukh Week 2022. Thank you  @fishfingersandscarves for prompting me to actually finally record this damn song, edit and post it!
Day 7 of Sansukh Week, celebrating a year since the fanfic was completed, is about endings. This song is about the ending of the fanfic, and the emotions it gave me. I wrote it whilst I was ill with COVID, about a week or two after Sansukh finished. I then forgot about it. Did some editing. Forgot about it some more. Asked @oakwyrm @hobbitsoupbowl and @fishfingersandscarves if I could use their art, they graciously said yes, I forgot about it. Now it is here!!!
This video is a) an emotional retelling of a weird emotional; b) a massive thank you to @determamfidd; c) a joke that I mainly did because I thought of the last line and it made me giggle.

Joyful Reunion

Book 5, Chapter 48 (Part 2)
Since Duan Ling came to Jiangzhou, Li Yanqiu genuinely mastered the art of ruling by inaction. Outside of feigning his death, he’s kept himself almost completely out of every decision made since then, letting Mu Kuangda and Han Bin do whatever they want. Duan Ling is always worrying about disrupting Li Yanqiu’s plans, thus he remains apprehensive about his own.
“You’re doing great. I never thought things would turn out like this either. At first, I only planned to find out how many sharp rocks are under these turbulent waters, which would be revealed when the flood subsides.”
Duan Ling remains silent, listening to Li Yanqiu.
“When your dad was still around, he said that Great Chen is rotting. Whether it’s the secretariat, the imperial court, or the army, they all gave off the stench of decay. There’s no room for new blood to get promoted, and old men dominate politics. Power is taking ages to return to the central government.”
Duan Ling can sense the danger lurking in Li Yanqiu’s impassive tone, but he does not interrupt.
“The imperial court of Great Chen needs to go through a transition. Take the old factions and wipe them all away. Let young people with their fresh strength take over the established positions.”
“But even now,” Duan Ling says, “a lot of things are still firmly in the grasp of the old officials. If we swap out everyone in the Secretariat, a lot of procedures in the south will stop working.”
"My son, do you really think that? Allow me to ask you one question: when the flood hit Jiangzhou and Jiangnan last year, who were the ones that travelled to each region of the south and saved the people from disaster? Was it the imperial court, or was it the young officials? The secretariat oversees the imperial court, and they could direct things, but what practical purpose did they really serve?
“All their decisions stemmed from the gentry’s interests.” Before Duan Ling can answer him, Li Yanqiu continues, “Complex bureaucracy and red tape hold back all progress. Whether it’s disaster relief or rebuilding, all their decisions are based on ‘lessening damage to the clan’. In the end, it is Heibei, under your governance, without receiving much help from the south, and facing a war with the north besides, that has gradually come up in the world.”
“And so?” Duan Ling says. “Uncle, do you mean to say that, with this unforeseen catastrophe, you were to take the imperial court and …”
“Those who pledged allegiance to Mu Kuangda must die,” Li Yanqiu says. “That was indeed the initial plan. I don’t really care how much evidence there is on any of them — I just wanted to charge them all with being his accomplice.”
Duan Ling can’t help the shudder that runs through his chest — Li Yanqiu was planning to kill off Su Fa, Mu Kuangda, and most major officials of the court, then search their properties and seize all of their assets. But this must come at the cost of another catastrophe — the south will go through a drastic transition as everyone old is replaced with new, and the nation will fall into violent upheaval.
Finally, what may happen boils down to two possibilities: one, the empire will be annihilated by a foreign invasion, and two, all the forces within the imperial court will be reshuffled. Young officials promoted through the civil exams over the past several years will replace the old officials and become the imperial court’s new backbone.
“It’s something we’ve been preparing to do since we relocated the capital,” Li Yanqiu says. “But as we’re new arrivals in Jiangzhou, it would have been unwise to act too rashly. That’s why it’s taken me so long to begin. Take a step back and look at the big picture — we can even say that this is something we’ve been planning to get done since before your grandpa passed away.”
“But …” Duan Ling murmurs, “It’s far too risky.”
“That’s why your real challenge isn’t regaining your identity and returning to the place where you belong, but to return and face an entirely different imperial court, set out to organise it, stabilise it, and centralise power once more so that all authority return to the imperial family.”
That hasn’t been a part of Duan Ling’s thinking at all. Now that he’s considering it carefully, he realises that in Li Yanqiu’s plans, everyone who wasn’t informed of his false death fell within the purview of his “purge” — even Yao Fu, and even Xie You, had not been excluded.
“But if we lose Xie You’s support it would be very difficult for us to stabilise Jiangzhou,” Duan Ling says.
“The Black Armours listens to orders from the Son of Heaven, not Xie You’s. Let’s say you bet all of your stakes on Xie You. If one day even he turns on you, what will you do then? Of course, if we can leave him be, I would much rather leave him be. If he’s willing to protect you for the rest of his life, that would be the best scenario. If he isn’t, then you’re destined to fight him someday.”
But his plan’s been thoroughly smashed by Duan Ling. On his road to regaining his rightful place, he’s tried to keep too many people alive.
“Of course, it’s a risky move from my perspective as well.” Li Yanqiu says impassively, "That night, when you told me that you were planning to find evidence of collusion between Mu Kuangda and Han Bin, I became aware that this whole business was already out of my control.
“It’s just like what your dad once said — whether this empire is a good one or a bad one, ultimately it’s yours.” Li Yanqiu smiles lightly. “You chose a different path. The heavens have plans that man cannot predict, so just keep walking on this path, and follow it according to your thinking.”
Duan Ling cannot help but reconsider what Li Yanqiu has told him. A single massacre could bring about an unprecedented transformation, scattering and redistributing all forces in the imperial court.
“Go on. Your dad is watching over you from up above. But no matter how this is going to end, you must figure out how you’re going to face it.”
The stars above him are as densely distributed as droplets of water in a waterfall. Autumnal stars shimmer and spread across the night sky, a reflection of the ever-flowing Yangtze, illuminating the earth.
It is nighttime. Cai Yan has already gone days without sleep, and now he’s abruptly startled awake by footsteps.
When he was attending school in Shangjing, he’d gleaned plenty of the last days of the rulers of vanquished kingdoms from the histories. The sound of soldiers picking up their blades, scales rubbing against scales on their armour, footsteps, coughing — they all signal an inauspicious yet inevitable ending: death.
He used to not fear death, but later, he slowly started to grow fearful of death. While hiding in this palace chamber, he can feel his life ebbing away, dripping through this cage one drop at a time, as though a monster is sucking away his life force. There’s nothing he can do except wait in the Eastern Palace for death to come to him.
He’s resigned to his fate, counting down the days until he dies, fear shadowing him all the while.
When things were going his way, he even thought that the lie could last a lifetime, with no one the wiser regarding this meticulously premeditated scheme. On the rare occasion that he thought of it when the night was dark and deep, spurred on by fear, he would think of escaping from the palace, running as far as he could.
It’s like when a thief steals something that doesn’t belong to him. Stolen goods scald him like a hot yam, but he can’t get rid of it.
Ever since that day, Feng Duo had been taken away, and Cai Yan has no idea where they are keeping him. Lang Junxia is still missing, leaving Cai Yan completely abandoned — he can’t do anything at all.
The footsteps are coming closer and closer. A tall figure walks into the room. The guard outside closes the door.
“Let’s talk,” Han Bin says nonchalantly. He unties his cloak and tosses it aside. “For the past few days I’ve been so busy with other things that I actually haven’t had the time to deal with you.”
Cai Yan stares at Han Bin quietly.
Han Bin continues, “Xie You’s already fled. Give me some time, and both he and Yao Fu are going to meet a violent end. Nobody’s left to save you anymore.”
Han Bin looks Cai Yan up and down rather rudely. He’s already sent a message out today to inform the army garrisoned beneath Yubiguan to send reinforcements. As soon as his reinforcements arrive, he will open the inner city’s gates himself and stage a pincer attack, taking down the Black Armours in one fell swoop.
Soon as Xie You dies, taking care of what trouble that remains would be like sweeping up fallen leaves in autumn. He’ll set up negotiations with Yao Fu and tell him he won’t touch Huaiyin; Great Chen’s empire will thus fall into his hands.
Han Bin wonders what Li Jianhong and Li Yanqiu will think, from their residence in the underworld, if they ever find out that the Li empire will end this way.
“I’ve had enough,” Cai Yan says, his voice shaking, “just kill me.”
Han Bin seems a bit surprised. He considers Cai Yan.
“What do you mean by that?” Han Bin asks.
Cai Yan trembles, his breath coming in endless gasps. “I should never have been here in the first place. From the very start, it was a mistake that led me all the way here, and by now there’s nothing I want anymore. General Han, you are quite right — I’m not the crown prince of Great Chen. And there’s no way you can even imagine where the real crown prince is. Even Mu Kuangda has no way to know.”
“And who are you really?”
Cai Yan swallows. “Is who I really am at all important? My whole family is dead. Even if you want to sentence me to Nine Familial Exterminations, there’s nobody left to exterminate. But you, on the other hand, General Han, you have no idea, but you’re doomed. Xie You and Yao Fu are still holding back one last card, and all they’re waiting for is for you to announce to the world that I am not who I say I am.”
Han Bin’s eyes narrow slightly.
Cai Yan laughs. “Promise me that you’ll kill me before he comes back, and I’ll tell you everything.”
“Go ahead.” Han Bin sits down nearby, still like a statue.
It is dawn. Duan Ling stands before the river alone. Today’s Jiangzhou is hung with dark clouds, and an element of restlessness pervades the atmosphere.
After Li Yanqiu told him all those things yesterday, Duan Ling has been feeling rather lost. He knows that the plan Li Yanqiu described to him in a few sentences is nothing more than an overview — if he really wanted to purge all of the old officials, naturally, he’d have plans in place for what to do afterwards. It’s just that the weight on his shoulder seems to have gotten a bit heavier.
Every dynasty had its precedents of a ruler killing off his powerful officials and subjects that had accomplished much for the empire. The emperor of Great Yu used a Mid-Autumn Festival banquet to burn the attending old officials to death; only this opportunity was taken advantage of by the empress, and the incident fermented into a coup that lasted for years. In the end, it was the exiled crown prince who returned with an army to recover the throne.2
And what would happen if he doesn’t kill them?
Wu Du approaches him against hazy morning light. “We should get going. Are you still thinking about what your uncle said?”
Duan Ling hums an affirmative response and turns back to look at Wu Du. They stand face to face, their eyes meeting in silence.
Wu Du studies Duan Ling carefully. “You’ve lost weight.”
“I’ll be fine once this is all over.”
“But you haven’t thought things through,” Wu Du says.
“You’re right. I’ve already stepped onto a path where no one can give me directions anymore. There are some things that even my dad didn’t manage to get done back then.”
“Sometimes I think you’re more like Chancellor Mu.” Wu Du suddenly smiles. “You seriously learned a lot from him.”
“He and my uncle had the same idea. They have different standpoints, but they ended up doing essentially the same thing. However, Chancellor Mu has a lot of patience, so everything was pushed along according to his plans. While my uncle and my dad’s ways are like a lightning strike — uncompromising, would lose eight hundred men to kill one thousand, Pyrrhic victories so be it.”
Meanwhile, Mu Kuangda’s methods are far more conciliatory. Very seldom does he resort to drastic measures to get rid of dissidents — aside from those of the Li clan and that hapless Bian Lingbai.
If it wasn’t for Han Weiyong’s downfall, he would never have fallen so low. Mu Kuangda has been steering his boat gingerly through the centres of countless vortexes since the beginning of the year, and the slightest error could send him crashing against the hidden rocks at the bottom of the river, leading to a gruesome death. If Han Weiyong was still around, Liao could have started putting pressure on the Chen border at the beginning of this year; even if Li Yanqiu wanted to get rid of him he wouldn’t have dared move so quickly.
And after Chang Pin’s death, his absence caused Mu Kuangda to misjudge the situation again and again. Now that Fei Hongde is here it seems like a good chance to gain back the advantage, but to his consternation Han Bin is moving ahead without consulting him, staging a coup ahead of schedule and ruining his plans.
“Are you feeling better, Chancellor Mu?” Fei Hongde says.
Since the attempt on his life that day, Mu Kuangda has been taken to the palace. The pretext Han Bin gave was to prevent another attempt at assassination, and to protect everyone in the Mu family, but in reality, he’s doing so to keep the Mu family under his control to prevent any unforeseen mishaps.
Mu Kuangda coughs a few times and struggles to sit up. He nods and says. “I’m feeling much better, and in a few days, I’ll be able to attend morning assembly as usual. I just never expected Wu Du and Wang Shan not to come to the palace with us, however.”
“Perhaps they’re moving around out there,” Fei Hongde says, “looking for the right chance to get you out of here, Chancellor Mu.”
Mu Kuangda heaves a sigh; he knows full well that this apprentice of his doesn’t get attached — like a snake in the dark, Wang Shan may turn on him and bite him any time.
“Do you have any news of their whereabouts?” Mu Kuangda asks. “And where did Chang Liujun go?”
Fei Hongde shakes his head. “I just asked General Han. He hasn’t heard anything at all.”
“And the crown prince?”
“He’s been locked away,” Fei Hongde replies.
Wuluohou Mu hasn’t come back either; all four great assassins are suddenly unaccounted for. Mu Kuangda is finally starting to get the feeling that something isn’t quite right — this current contingency can ultimately be traced back to that incident in the hidden chamber. He had thought the one giving Wang Shan pointers was Fei Hongde, but Fei Hongde really shouldn’t be privy to this much information.
“A lot of people’s arrived,” Fei Hongde says. “They’ve all come to give their condolences. Envoys from Yuan, Liao, Xiliang, and Tuyuhun are all waiting outside.”
“It’s about time for them to get here. Help me up so I can take a walk.”
With Fei Hongde’s help, Mu Kuangda stumbles to his feet. There are still bandages wrapped around his body; after the attack, he’s aged a lot overnight, looking shockingly like an old man with one foot in the grave.
“Chancellor, your wounds are not yet healed. Where would you like to go?”
“Let’s go check on the empress-dowager.” Mu Kuangda replies.

Li Qingcheng from Yingnu did not do burn his officials to death, but his father did. Li Qingcheng did behead his chancellor/brother-in-law though, among other even (far) more sociopathic actions. (Please read Yingnu) ↩︎
