Yeonjun wiped the blood from his lip as he stood up from the asphalt.
Nobody thought it would ever happen, but the world had fallen into a nuclear apocalypse. Over half of the population had been killed, and the ones who survived were either sick, or running for their lives. And that was the case for Yeonjun and his best friend, Y/n.
They covered their ringing ears as nuclear bombs hit, miles away. It caused more shrill screams to be heard and more ashes to be seen.
“We’re not dead yet, come on!” Yeonjun exclaimed as he grabbed Y/n’s hand.
She quickly followed him, down the street. They had learned in the early stages of the apocalypse that buildings weren’t safe. They only went into them when they needed clothing, food, et cetera.
The nuclear apocalypse, known as ‘Operation X’, was an attempt by a group of terrorists to end the world. And they were getting dangerously close. But some still had a will to live, a fighting spirit. They weren’t going to give up that easily. And especially not Yeonjun and Y/n. They were young, and had so much more life to live. Not to mention, Y/n had a little secret she had kept from her best friend for far too long. And she needed to live to tell him. Her family had already been tragically killed by the apocalypse, so he was the only thing she was living for. And vice versa.
‘Operation X’ wasn’t just any nuclear apocalypse. The people who became sick from close contact with the chemicals became, in some ways, like zombies. They weren’t resurrected monsters, but something in the chemicals messed with their heads and gave them a desire to kill everything, and everyone they saw. The survivors called them ‘X Mutants’.
As the two friends ran, another sound of footsteps was heard behind them. They turned around to see an X Mutant. He began to run after them with an evil smile on his face and a knife in his hands.
“Go Y/n, I’ll take care of him,” Yeonjun ushered calmly, as to reassure her. She nodded and backed away slowly, not wanting to leave her best friend.
Yeonjun’s attention was then on the mutant. The mutant then charged at him, attempting to stab him, but Yeonjun grabbed his arm and took the knife, hastily stabbing the mutant’s stomach with it. He gagged at the green, sticky blood that got on his clothing.
“Yeonjun!” Y/n called from a distance.
He quickly looked to see another male mutant choking Y/n.
”Let her go!” he growled, running towards the two.
Blood began trickling down her neck as the knife was pressed further and further against her delicate skin. But just before he could fatally wound her, Yeonjun pulled him off of her and stabbed him straight through the heart. He sighed in relief as his dead body hit the pavement.
“Thanks Yeonjunnie,” she smiled, looking at the smoke rising in the distance. “I haven’t heard an explosion for an hour. I think we’re good to walk for now.”
”Probably,” Yeonjun agreed, standing to his feet and taking her left hand in his. “Let’s find somewhere to sleep,” he suggested, as they both had bags under their eyes. She smiled and nodded as they both began walking hand in hand, the orange sky turning navy blue.
Although there were many survivors across the planet, Yeonjun and Y/n were the only survivors in the city of Kyoto, which was the city they were currently in. It made them feel as if they were the only ones in the world.
They sauntered down the empty streets and listened as they heard a song resonate through them, assumably coming from a radio nearby. It was a love song in fact.
After I met you
I've been happy with small changes
A dazzling morning
I open my eyes thinking of you
I sit face-to-face with you at the table
I ask about your day
"My day was pretty good"
I want to answer with a smile
When we understand each other about little things
I was surprised that we got used to each other
I love you
Y/n felt a slight twinge in her heart when she found the lyrics surprisingly relatable. They were so many things she wished to tell Yeonjun, and now that their lives were at risk, she needed to. But she didn’t know how.
Just like now when it's peaceful
I want to be with you forever
I thought that when I was looking at You
I was so happy after meeting you
I was able to love you so much because you embraced and understood my young and immature mind warmly
What was holding her back? The fear of losing him. He was the best thing that ever happened to her. How could she risk it? She couldn’t was the simple answer. Maybe they would fall in love in her dreams.
When we hurt each other with nonchalant tones
I can't bear our distant relationship
So I'm sorry
Yeonjun stole a glance at his first crush. Somehow, she looked like an angel, even with blood and ashes covering her. It was recently when he realized it was more than a crush. It was falling in love.
It was the way she understood him. She always knew just what to do when he was sad, how to cheer him up. She knew just what to say.
It was the way she laughed. He found her laugh adorable and innocent. It was so contagious, Yeonjun never had a straight face when she giggled.
It was the way she cared for others. He’d never met a sweeter human being on the planet. He would even get jealous when she was taking care of someone that wasn’t himself.
It was all these things and more.
Even now when I'm anxious
I want to be with you forever
I thought that as I was looking at You
I was so happy after meeting you
I was able to love you so much because you embraced and understood my young and immature mind warmly
“Hey, there’s a park over there,” Yeonjun pointed. “If you don’t mind sleeping in the grass that is.”
”Life’s too short to be picky about your sleeping place. Especially now,” Y/n chuckled, finding joy in the worst situations.
“You’re always right,” Yeonjun smiled.
The two walked over to a bench in the park and sat to watch the sun drop below the horizon. Their hands subconsciously intertwined.
”Can I tell you something crazy?” Y/n asked.
”I mean, I deal with you almost everyday so, yeah,” he laughed at his own insult.
”Hey!” she acted offended and lightly slapped his arm, earning an overly dramatic “Oww” from him. “Well, I-
Y/n was cut off by the sound dangerously close bomb going off.
”Oh my God,” Yeonjun, awed, the explosion so close, they could already feel the heat. “We’re going to get infected if we stay, run!”
The two ran faster than they ever had that day. What seemed like hours was only five minutes of running. They were far from the park now, which was now covered in a toxic cloud. They were both tired, but kept going. That was, until Yeonjun heard a yelp of pain behind him. He turned around to see Y/n, who had tripped over a broken car part, and landed harshly, drawing blood.
”Hurry, we need to go,” he begged, seeing the cloud of toxins nearing them at an alarming rate.
“Just go Yeonjun, I’m only slowing you down,” she cried silently.
”No! I can’t leave without you!” he said, a bit angry that she wasn’t listening.
”I can’t get up, I think my leg is broken,” she admitted, wincing as her leg shifted uncomfortably. “Yeah definitely broken.”
”I won’t leave you behind,” he said, picking her up bridal style and running as fast as he needed to.
~~~~~
Yeonjun set Y/n down as they were now in a safe area. His legs felt as if they would come off, and his eyes, as if they would shut against his will.
“We’re safe now,” he panted. “How’s your leg?”
She cried a little as she tried to move it. “It hurts Yeonjun,” she replied with a broken voice, which broke his heart.
He set her up against the side of a building and began to examine her leg. He then noticed how close their faces were.
”What was it you were going to tell me earlier?” he asked, trying to get her mind off of her leg.
”I was going to tell you I loved you,” she whispered.
Yeonjun froze in his place. “You… you were?”
She nodded and accidentally glanced down to his lips. He noticed and smirked. He looked into her eyes as if asking for approval before attaching his lips to hers in a loving, long awaited kiss.
After the hot summer, with the sound of rain that I'll miss
When I blush as I get shy
I'll kiss your eyes and you will have a lot on your mind
Let's walk forward together
Are you happy after meeting me too?
Yeonjun pulled away and lightly kissed the bridge of her nose. “So much for best friends,” he laughed. “I love you too Y/n,” he smiled.
They stared at each other for awhile with adoration.
“I don’t want to ruin the moment, but I think we should get to a safer place. But I can’t move,” Y/n stated.
”I got you,” he said, hoisting her up again, wrapping her arm around his neck. They then walked down the street as the sun disappeared.
”Thanks for not leaving me behind,” she rested her head against his chest.
I'm sorry that I couldn't do more for you
I'm selfish and nervous
But I wanted to treat you well
I think, I've found the perfect love
That I've been waiting for, for a long time
Because you held me and gave me energy
Because you hugged me by being considerate lovingly
After I met You
