Ever thought about how a team called Justice League International is 80% American? I haven't even read their comics, but I've thought of that before. Besides Fire and Ice (and maybe Doctor Light), the whole team was pretty much all american. "International", huh? But it gets worse to me. Justice League Europe had one European member! One! It was Rocket Red. The rest of the team was not from Europe. DC really blew it. You could have given us some cool global heroes, but instead we get a bunche of Americans with a token foreigner or two. Talk about International, huh? It's no different from the regular justice league of america! They blew it! And that annoys me.
I am remaking this post to add that I don't hate people who like the Justice League International or Justice League Europe. I just think there's something not quite right about giving those teams names like that when they're mostly composed of americans. It seems like it's a bit hypocritical to say a team of 90% americans is really International or European.

Up in this miserable corner of Europe, we're desperately trying to get our country to back South Africa's submission but our leaders are either being heavily blackmailed or are Zionists themselves, they won't fucking listen to us despite the fact Ireland has made up 4% of all global demonstrations even tho we're about 1% of the global population. Ireland wants to help, we are being stomped on, but we will keep trying.

ABOUT THE SAME SIZE AS AMERICA?????
Tumblr media
And there are more, a lot more... Africa is about the same size as America after all. But these heroes need guidance. I intend to use what I’ve learned with you to do that.
Do you mean 1.2 billion people in African vs 329 million in the US??? or u do u mean landmass of which AFRICA IS STILL MUCH BIGGER HAVE YOU SEEN A MAP??? God I swear dc is physically incapable of understanding that Africa is a Whole Continent with various complex cultures and histories.

Arab League to hold emergency meeting to discuss ICJ decision on Gaza war
The Arab League is set to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the preliminary ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The meeting will be held at the request of Palestine to develop an Arab stance on the ICJ judgement, according to Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki.
On December 29, South Africa filed an accusation with the Hague International Court of Justice charging Israel with genocide of Palestinians amid the Gaza offensive after the Hamas attack on October 7.

The Bat Family Timeline and Ages (Post-Crisis and New Earth) with Sources
Tumblr media
Evidence
In Batman: Year One, Bruce is said to be 25 in the January he returns to Gotham. The 1976 DC Calendar puts Bruce's birthday on the 19th of February so Bruce is 26 during his first outing as Batman in April.
Marv Wolfman's Batman: Year Three (Batman vol. 1 #436) tells us that Dick Grayson's parents die in Bruce's third year. In Batman vol. 1 #441 (also by Wolfman) Tim says that Robin started appearing around 6 months after the death of the Flying Graysons. For Dick's age when he becomes Robin, see below.
Bruce joins the Justice League before Dick forms the Teen Titans. Both these teams form before Barbara Gordon becomes Batgirl at 16 (Batgirl: Year One).
Barbara and Dick are each other's dates to their high school prom and so are less than 2 years apart in age (Detective Comics vol. 1 #871).
I suspect Dick, who was an emancipated minor, graduated high school and started college a year early, which allows Dick and Barbara to have some time as the new Dynamic Duo, as we see in Batman Family.
Dick Grayson is 18 when he forms the New Teen Titans, all of whom are also teenagers (Nightwing vol. 2 #137 by Wolfman, who also created the New Teen Titans).
Dick Grayson is 19 when he becomes Nightwing (Batman vol. 1 # 416).
21 year-old Helena becomes Huntress (Huntress: Year One #1), and interacts with Batgirl, meaning that Barbara is not yet Oracle.
Jason dies at 15, 4 months before his 16th birthday (Batman Files). This is before the New Teen Titans' third year anniversary (New Titans #71), before any of the Titans turn 22 (Deathstroke vol. 1 Annual 1), 2 years after Dick becomes Nightwing and almost 10 years before Dick's parents are killed (Batman vol. 1 #436). Dick is hence 21 during these events and 11 when he became Robin.
I also kinda like Dick being 17 years younger than Bruce because that's also the age difference between Adam West and Burt Ward from the 60s TV series.
After these events, Tim Drake becomes Robin and is 13-14 (Batman vol. 1 #441 and Robin II #1)
Soon after, Stephanie Brown is 15 when she becomes Spoiler (Secret Origins 80-Page Giant).
Stephanie is still 15 when she realises that she is pregnant (Robin vol. 2 #59) and Tim is almost 15 during this time (Secret Origins 80-Page Giant).
Cassandra Cain is 17 when she comes to Gotham during this time (Batgirl vol. 1 #1), during No Man's Land which lasts one year.
Helena’s family were killed when she was 8 and during Batman/Huntress: Cry For Blood, Tim says the murders happened roughly 15 years ago, making her roughly 23 during this storyline.
Cass turns 18 in January (Batgirl vol. 1 #39), Tim Drake turns 16 (Robin vol. 2 #116), Jason would have turned 18 in August (Detective Comics vol. 1 #790), and Stephanie is 16 when she "dies" (Batman Allies Secret Files & Origin).
Personally I'd re-arrange Tim's 16th birthday to be the last of these events four events to accommodate him still being 17 late into the Batman: Reborn, see below.
Jason soon returns to Gotham as Red Hood, not long before Infinite Crisis, 52 and One Year Later.
Following the one year time skip, Dick says it's been almost 10 years since his misadventures with Metal Eddie and Liu as a 16-17 year old (Nightwing vol. 2 #133 by Wolfman), which makes sense because he would be 25 by my math.
Stephanie returns from her time as a medical volunteer in East Africa, finishes high school and begins university during Batman: Reborn. She'd turn 19 by the end of this year by my math, which is a typical age to be begin attending university (Gotham Underground and Batgirl vol. 3 #1).
Dick calls Damian Wayne a "10 year-old" before Stephanie attends university (Batman and Robin vol. 1 #2) and Steph still calls Damian a "10 year-old" while she's in her second semester (Batgirl vol. 3 #13 and Batgirl vol. 3 #17). He might have turned 11 before the reboot.
Batwoman: Elegy (Detective Comics #858), during the Batman: Reborn year, shows that Kate was 12 when she was kidnapped and saw her mother and sister killed. This incident is also said to happen "20 years ago”, making her 32 and hence 30-31 during her first appearance in 52/One Year Later.
Tim Drake is still 17 while Steph is in her second semester of her first year at university, and it's stated that he is meant to be in his senior year at high school (Batgirl vol. 3 #13, Red Robin #17 and Red Robin #25). It's possible he turns 18 before the reboot.
Mistakes I Made
Cassandra Cain is 21 in Year Eighteen.
The "Titans disbands" in Year Thirteen was definitely a year early but it's done.

[South Africa demands International Court of Justice impose provisional measures on Israel to halt its assault on Gaza. South Africa's delegation underscored the mass killing of Palestinians in Gaza, saying it formed a 'calculated pattern of conduct by Israel indicating a genocidal intent']
🇿🇦🇮🇱 🚨 GENOCIDE TRIAL BEGINS AGAINST THE ISRAELI ENTITY AT INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE
The first hearings against Israel on charges of genocide are currently being held at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands on Thursday, as Israeli occupation bombing and shelling continued to massacre entire families in the Gaza Strip.
The charges, brought against the Israeli entity by South Africa, were filed with the ICJ on Dec. 29th, 2023, accusing the Jewish apartheid-State of the crime of genocide, implemented as a matter of policy against the Palestinian population of the enclave.
South Africa filed the charges with the ICJ in a meticulously crafted case that included an 84-page report compiling evidence of genocide against the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli occupation.
In the 84-page document, South Africa accuses the Israeli entity of creating conditions "conducive to [the Palestinian population's] physical destruction," which South Africa and several other Arab and African nations believe constitutes the crime of "genocide" being inflicted against the native population of the enclave, by the mostly European Jewish colonists.
The hearings, which are being held in The Hague, Netherlands, will be exclusively addressing the request by South Africa that the International community take urgent measures to direct the Israeli occupation to cease and disist its military operations in the Gaza Strip while the Court hears evidence in the case, a process that can span several years.
Hearings began with a statement by South Africa's Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ronald Lamola, followed by a presentation from the South African representative.
Early on in the hearings, Adila Hassim, an advocate of South Africa's High Court, began setting the stage for the current conflict by describing for the Court the events of 1948 and the Nakba, arguing that the Palestinian people faced a "catastrophe" that year, with the Israeli entity depriving the Arab population of their non-negotiable Rights, such as the right of return and self-determination.
The advocate called for the immediate end to discriminatory policies targeting Palestinians, and pointed out that Israel's aggression against the Arab population has escalated.
Hassim also pointed to Israel's system of apartheid imposed on the Palestinian people, along with the blockade and siege of the Gaza Strip, and described for the Court the ways in which Israel incites violence against Palestinians, in direct contravention of the Genocide Convention.
“We, along with representatives of the state of Palestine and human rights, file this lawsuit on behalf of the citizens of Gaza who cannot live in safety,” Hassim told the Court.
Later on in the hearings, South Africa's Minister of Justice, Ronald Lamola, added that “no armed attack on any territory, however grave its danger (…) can justify violations of the Convention," and accused the Israeli occupation of failing to uphold its obligations under International Law and the Genocide Conventions.
Over the course of two days, the Court will hear South Africa's justifications for filing the case with the ICJ, and will hear Israel's response on Friday.
Several Arab and African nations have also voiced support for South Africa's case of genocide against the Israeli occupation, including Jordan, Turkey, Libya, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Venezuela, Namibia, Nicaragua, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), comprising 57 Muslim-majority countries, and the members of the Arab League as well.
More than 200 Professors, academics and experts in International Law, the majority of which being from prestigious universities in the United States, have also endorsed South Africa's case against Israel.
More than 23'000 Palestinian civilians have been killed in Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, with nearly 60'000 wounded, 70% of whom are women and children, and with another 7'000 or more buried under the rubble.

Let me tell you about two subjects of mine that I am finding most difficult to uncover a smear on their names. Miss Stephanie Brown is being sponsored by Duchess Grayson for a season in Gotham's finest society. She's looking for a man who is decent and decently wealthy (she has parents to take care of, after all; she's not choosing to trade love for money just because she's poor). The Duke of Altheban is new to town and most certainly isn't looking for a bride, but something is drawing him to one young lady against his will. Everyone has dark truths, and none more so than those who live in the glitz of high society. I will reveal their most hidden mysteries by the end of the season, or my name is not, Lady Gotham

i finished justice league unlimited!!! im going to be honest. its a little overrated. dont get me wrong, theres definitely amazing parts. but when its bad, its bad. it gave me a lot of fun new characters to like and then gave them extremely stupid plots later on that made me want to break a wall down. still better than average, but any show that has not one but two separate episodes about ancient aliens who colonized africa needs to be taken down a peg. its like theyd think of a really cool idea and then shove in some horrible detail that annoys the shit out of me. BEST EPISODES: i am legion, flash and substance, the great brain robbery, grudge match, and destroyer.

My Interpretation of the Justice League Pt. 2
Post-Crisis: Since Barry Allen was erased from time after dying during the crisis, the original Justice League never had the flash as a team member. No, instead Hawkman takes his place as a founder of the Justice League. So the founders post crisis are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman. Besides this change though, everything stays very much the same.
Well, besides the Martian Manhunter's backstory. New Mars does exist, but Ma'alefa'ak destroys it. He remembers the crisis (one of the rare few with a willpower strong enough to remember the world pre-crisis) and it drove him insane. He's now convinced he must kill his fellow martians to save them from the return of the anti-monitor, and so he sets fire to the whole colony of New Mars. Martian Manhunter returns just in time to see his family and community be taken from him once again. New Mars is gone, his wife and kids are all dead, and his brother has gone insane. He's lost everything.
But besides the Martian Manhunter's backstory, everything else remains the same. The Martian Manhunter leaves the team in 1971. He stays in space until 1983 (except this time, he stayed in space solely to guard his brother), until the other justice league members summon him to save them.
Then the Justice League disbands just like they did pre-crisis, and Martian Manhunter founds the Justice League Detroit. The only difference here is that the Martian Manhunter brings Ma'alefa'ak with him when he comes to earth, and makes him join the Justice League Detroit too. So the Justice League Detroit has six members this time.
Post-Crisis II: Justice League… Ottawa? and the birth of the Justice League International: Around 1988 or 1989, The Justice League Detroit gets a mission in Canada.
The New Justice League Canada has seven founding members, too: Martian Manhunter and seven other members I can't think of right now. But I want whoever's added to be Canadian. Whether they be original characters or old characters retconned to be Canadian, I don't really care.
Anyways, the Justice League moves up to Canada. They still serve America too, but their headquarters are in Ottawa now. This also makes Martian Manhunter realize that each continent probably needs it's own justice league, since there's so many countries and peoples that need helping all over. Thus is born the Justice League Europe, as well as the Justice League Asia, Justice League Africa, Justice League Oceania and Justice League South America. The Canadian team works for all of North America.

I can't help but notice that all of the people in your anti-colonialism by "marginalized people" book rec list are people who were born and grew up in either the US or, in one or two cases, another white Anglophone country. I.e. the imperial core.
As a non-American I wonder whether, due to the cultural hegemony of the US and other Anglophone countries, the perspectives of people who have spent their whole lives in the Imperial core (even if marginalized in other ways due to their race or some other attribute) can be considered "authentic" depictions of the effects of colonialism in the way that you are presenting them. I find that people from the US, even POC people from the US, are often pretty incapable of understanding non-US perspectives on social justice issues because they're rarely exposed to them and because they grew up brainwashed with media that treats the US as the center of the world, so they overlay the US framework over everything.
I would perhaps have liked to see more recs for authors writing about colonialism who actually grew up in countries that have been affected by colonialism, or at least in countries that aren't as rich and powerful as the US and are therefore heavily dependent on the political whims of powerful Western ones. I'm sure there's a bunch of people in South America writing SF/F, for example, considering their long tradition of awesome magical realism. Or South Africa. Or India (I note that Salman Rushdie is not on your list, for example). I'm not writing this to be pettish, because I don't know enough about it either and would actually like to know, I just feel like perhaps we should all be a bit humbler when talking about this since a strictly US-centric perspective is still a VERY limited one when talking about colonialism (by definition an international, intercultural phenomenon), even when written by POC.
I also wonder about your definition of "marginalized" and if it doesn't fall into the same US-centrism that I talked about in my previous paragraph (even if we assume that "marginalized" means "marginalized as it relates to colonialism" and ignore other forms of marginalization). Is a person from, say, the Balkans, marginalized enough to write about anti-colonialism, or are they exactly the same as a white American in your perspective? Does it matter where from the Balkans? Does it matter if they're Muslim or Christian? How about a Ukrainian person? How about a Ukrainian Jew? Is a person from Bosnia or Ukraine, who went through a war in their lifetime, less qualified to write about war than Kuang, who grew up middle class and went to an Ivy League school (and honestly did a really shitty job of portraying a war in The Poppy Wars), just because they're "Caucasian"?
Also, people are allowed to acknowledge flaws of books written by POC without being automatically labeled as racist, you know. Finding Babel too heavy-handed or on the nose has nothing to do with finding POC characters annoying or unrelatable and sorry but, yeah, IMHO it's really on the nose and annoying about it. It's the writing style that's the problem, not the themes. Also the central metaphor, IMHO, makes it completely useless as a colonialism allegory because if you can destroy colonialism by destroying one magical uberpowerful whatsit, your book is kinda not serious enough about nuanced representation of sociological and political forces to be considered impactful anti-colonialist literature. Saying that as someone who loves Butler and Jemisin. Thea Guanzhon, for example, is a Filipina born and raised in the Philippines and still lives there, which makes her book way more of an "own voices" account of colonialism than Kuang's could ever be in my accounting, but that doesn't mean that her account of colonialism has any particular nuance to it (so far it's just the backdrop for the enemies to lovers romance). So even assuming that Kuang's account is resonant enough with enough people (which I know it is because her book is super popular), who is more deserving of being on your "own voices" list, Kuang or Guanzhon?
I also wonder why white women in particular?
The simple response to all of this is that the post you're referring to broke containment.
I debated replying, because I can't help but feel your message was written in bad faith. But I'm going to try to give you the benefit of the doubt.
You are absolutely right about the limitations of the original list. I truly didn't expect it to reach so many people, and I am not nearly as well-read as I'd like to be when it comes to literature written outside of the West. Please take a look at the reblogs, where a bunch of awesome people have done incredible work filling the gaps I left.
I struggle with the rest of your message. I explicitly stated that I do not expect people to enjoy specific books written by BIPOC authors, simply that I've noticed a very frustrating pattern. And yet you suggest I'm saying that if someone doesn't like Babel or The Hurricane Wars, I'm saying they're racist. Be serious.
Even as a child of multigenerational immigrants, I'll freely admit that I personally have a very US-centric perspective on social issues that I need to work on, but it's wild of you to say that all POC people born in the US are "pretty incapable of understanding" global issues.
When I wrote "marginalized" in the original post, what I really meant was "BIPOC and BIPOC queer people.” I should’ve been more careful about the wording.
Why white women in particular? When it comes to anti-colonial and anti-imperialist fiction (written by Anglophones) the authors that I see most highly and frequently praised are white women. I'd list the specific ones I'm talking about here, but 1. I don't want to be hunted for sport by their fans, 2. I've actually enjoyed some of their work, and 3. they're only a small part of the problem and I think people should be allowed to write whatever they want as long as they can handle the criticism. But I'm sorry, white women. I'll do better next time. I also want to use this moment to apologize to all the dumbasses complaining about my tone/me being "shouty." Reverse racism is real, and we must all stand vigilant hahaha miss me
You telling me to be humble feels a tad hypocritical, but sure, I'll take that under advisement.

obviously i still watched the show but i have been like. Mad at ted lasso ever since the ep in like season one i think where that guy comes to recruit sam for an african soccer league, and the end of the ep after sam turns him down reveals that actually that guy was a lying wackjob and it was too good to be true. And that made me really mad, because in this show where everyone is nice and everything works out, why is the concept of actual monetary compensation for african labour too good to be true? and i think its that ted lasso wants to flirt with these big social justice ideas, but is absolutely not prepared to confront the ramifications of them. because yeah, it is really fucking unfair that players from all over africa have to move to europe to have a career in soccer and by doing so continue to funnel millions of dollars into rich european hands. it would be really fucking nice to have a competing african league! but ted lasso the funny southern man show can’t actually commit to grappling with the exploitative conditions of professional soccer, so instead they just go “ah well african league is too good to be true”. and similarly, when they try to deal with both hate crimes and the fact that european countries routinely force migrants to die at sea in one single episode, they can’t actually come to the conclusion that every European border is a racialized one built on oppression, and they can’t actually address systemic societal racism in any meaningful way, because that would threaten the comfortable diverse-but-still-decisively-white-focused status quo they have going on. so it just ends with incredibly patronizing turn-the-other-cheek shit.
I’m still watching it at the end of the day so its like my fault too but like. if they dont want to like get into real-world shit then they could at least have sam be an actual main character like jamie. and bring back sharon i can’t believe they just had her disappear.
