In the Shadow of Harmony
A prose preview of the graphic novel
23:19, Monday, June 27. 2231 A.D. Arc Industries Headquarters, New Mega, USA.
"Sergeant Davis, come in. I was hoping you'd take me up on my invitation."
He was supposed to believe that his entire schedule just happened to clear on the very day he had been invited to meet with the Corporate Manager for External Affairs of Arc Industries by coincidence, but Gabriel Davis wasn't a fool. Much like everything else about the police station, he knew it was influenced directly by Arc and the other corporations. The nameplate on the desk in front of him read Lyran Marrinborough. The man who owned the name was seated behind the desk with steepled fingers, looking entirely self-satisfied.
"I was told this meeting was important but I wasn't told why," Gabriel replied coldly, anyway already wanting to leave.
"Your track record is truly impressive, Sergeant Davis, I mean; truly," the corporate man purred. He walked around his desk and to the small bar cart against the wall, the small table made of real wood. Wood was a scarcity on Terra after the atmosphere eroded in the middle of the 21st century, wiping out almost every form of plantlife on the planet before it was re-terraformed. In short, the table probably cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. The corporate manager plucked a perfect crystal tumbler off the tray, and filled it with gold ambrosia. "Over 200 deviants apprehended last year alone. And this year you've almost reached 100 and it's not even July. There's not a single officer that compares to you.
"Neal Voronin, the CEO at Hauer, he spoke very highly of you. He says you're a man that can get things done, and I respect that. Which is why my superiors and I have a unique job for you–"
"I'm not a mercenary," Gabriel immediately interjected. "My job is to uphold the law and protect and serve the people."
In name only. Frankly, Gabriel’s job was to uphold one law: no sentient androids in Terra. If an android or even robotic entity--from AI to automated vending machine--was deemed in any way sentient, it was up to cops like Davis to repossess, remove, and if necessary, terminate. Gabriel did his job believing there was a sort of nobility and service in it, which few cops did anymore. Mr. Marrinborough looked startled at Gabriel's statement, even though he was a cop and had been for nearly 15 years, for just that reason.
"...And here at Arc, we appreciate that about you," Marrinborough finally decreed, "which is another reason why we think you're the man for the job. You have your priorities set. You're a man of your word!" The last line was said with some eagerness, like Marrinborough just realized the angle he wanted to use to sell his pitch to Gabriel.
"You're a good cop, Gabriel—may I call you Gabriel?–" No, you may not– "which makes you so much better suited for this than a mercenary. When we have secure matters like this we prefer to go to the police before we turn to hired hands and Sentinels. There's a level of integrity with you boys in blue that Arc values. Which is why you and I are here."
Marrinborough was now standing before him, offering a glass of honeyed liquor like temptation itself. Gabriel was dealing with the devil and his soul was at stake.

Grace Needs Space by: Benjamin A. Wilgus and Rii Abrego
A Graphic Novel about a child of divorce trying to get close to one of her parents. The parent sucks in my opinion though so 3 stars.
Grace Needs space is an adorably drawn graphic novel about a girl named Grace and her divorced parents. Grace is going off her satellite to her ba’s ship and then a separate station entirely. It’s something she’s really looking forward to. She’s double checking landing times, going over everything even though her mom is telling her to relax, she is very much on task. I instantly loved this kid.…

Long Exposure by Marsoid
Tumblr media
Alright. As always we're starting with trigger warnings. Child abuse, child pornography (referenced), underage drinking and drug use, homophobia, bullying, and some violence.
When Jonas' childhood bully comes back to his school after (rumor has it) he'd gone to jail for stabbing his stepfather, they're forced to work together on a group project. They stumble across a strange research facility in the middle of the woods and gain superpowers, but with that comes an organization following them. (And maybe some romance too?)
I love this comic so much. I've read it all the way through like three times. Jonas and Mitch have a really adorable relationship (though I guess not really in the beginning, although it is kinda cute with how Mitch is very lovey-dovey) and Mitch's shirts are pretty great. The art is amazing and I loved how it's in all black and white except for Jonas' powers. Would for sure recommend to so many people it's amazing and I love it.
Since this is a webcomic, the link from the cover photo will take you to the Tapas page, but you can also read it on Webtoons and at https://www.longexposurecomic.com. You can also buy it as a print book on the author's shop if you prefer, but I don't think the entire comic is available that way. You can find the author's tumblr page @marsoid.

The Most Ambitious Sci-Fi Film You've Never Seen | Immortal (Ad Vitam)
youtube
A tribute to one of the strangest science fictions I've ever seen. A fascinating dystopian cyberpunk film.
Immortal (Ad Vitam) is an English language, French live-action film that was released in 2004. It was directed by Enki Bilal and is loosely based on his graphic novel The Carnival Of Immortals. It stars French model Linda Hardy as Jill, German actor Thomas Kretschmann (Wanted, The Pianist) as Nikopol, and English actress Charlotte Rampling (Orca) as Elma. The film was simultaneously filmed in French and English (one take in each language) so it could be released to a broader audience without the need to do voice dubbing afterward. You may be asking why this film is so ambitious? Well, Immortal is one of the first films to be filmed with full blue screen. This means that all the outside environments, cars, and some people were digitally rendered. These renders were done by Quantic Dream, makers of the video game Heavy Rain. The entire film was a huge undertaking for a novice director and a digital company that had little experience at the time.
The film overall wasn't considered a commercial success, but it has a devoted following for those who've followed the novels. The mix of CGI and live action can be a bit jarring to some and the plot can be difficult to follow upon one viewing. That being said, it is definitely worth checking out for any Sci-Fi fan. I saw this film for the first time 20 years ago and it stuck with me. I would describe it like an indie Fifth Element that could have benefitted from a longer run time to flesh things out more.
The song is They by Jem.
NOTE: Though I've not included it in the tribute video, the film does deal with the topic of assault and there are characters that are not morally just. This is just for awareness should you decide to seek the film out. It is still a fascinating film in my opinion.

Figment is a great all ages comic from the Disney Kingdom line. This is my review.
Tumblr media
Disney Kingdoms was a truly unappreciated gem of a comic book series. Each issue was based on a different Disney Theme Park attraction; past, present, and even ones that were never built. There’s a lot of lore and creativity put into Disney Theme Park attractions, so there is certainly very fertile ground for story telling.
So, I’d like to share with all of you a review I did of the comic Figment. Based on the classic EPCOT attraction Journey Into Imagination. Figment takes place in London in the year 1910.  It follows an aspiring inventor named Blarion Mercurial.  He might not look it, but he is destined to become The Dreamfinder.  Blarion works for The Academy Scientifica Lucidus.  He's always been a dreamer and he wants to harness the power of imagination and creativity.  Unfortunately, his boss, Chairman Illocrant, is only interested in creating a device that can during thought into energy.  While working on the device, Blarion brings Figment, his childhood imaginary friend, to life.  He also opens a portal into a realm of pure imagination.  Before long, our heroes embark on a journey into imagination.
I’d been meaning to read this comic for a while, but it got a major boost after I watched Defunctland’s episode on Journey Into Imagination. By the way, if you haven’t check out Defubctland, fix that as soon as possible. One of the best channels on YouTube. Love his attention to quality, and the amount of information he always manages to find on defunct theme park attractions.
Anyway, back on topic, I loved Figment. It is a great all ages comic with a strong message in believing in yourself. The segments set in the land of Imagination were fun and whimsical, but the real world segments were entertaining as well. It also a surprisingly well done origin story for Dreamfinder. It could easily have done very wrong. He’s one of those characters like Willy Wonka or Mrs. Frizzle where you don’t know much about them or their origins, but they’re so awesome you just don’t care. However, giving a definitive origin to such characters can backfire badly. Thankfully, that is not at all the case here.
Also, Figment is as cute and adorable as ever. Just as he should be. I’m not the only one who thinks this comic is great. It is the only member of the Disney Kingdoms line to get a sequel. Even then Disney CEO Bob Igor was blown away by the comic’s success. I know that Disney+ is going to be producing some shows based on Disney Theme Park attractions. So, perhaps Disney Kingdoms will rise again some day.
Have you read Figment? If so, what did you think?

FAVOURITE GRAPHIC NOVELS OF 2023
The Infinity Particle - By Wendy Xu
In this gorgeous graphic novel by Wendy Xu, co-creator of the award-winning Mooncakes, a young inventor falls for a lifelike AI and confronts questions of freedom and autonomy. Clementine Chang moves from Earth to Mars for a new start and is lucky enough to land her dream job with Dr. Marcella Lin, an Artificial Intelligence pioneer. On her first day of work, Clem meets Dr. Lin’s assistant, a humanoid AI named Kye. Clem is no stranger to robots—she built herself a cute moth-shaped companion named SENA. Still, there’s something about Kye that feels almost too human. When Clem and Kye begin to collaborate, their chemistry sets off sparks. The only downside? Dr. Lin is enraged by Kye’s growing independence and won’t allow him more freedom. Plus, their relationship throws into question everything Clem thought she knew about AI. After all, if Kye is sentient enough to have feelings, shouldn’t he be able to control his own actions? Where is the line between AI and human? As her past and Kye’s future weigh down on her, Clem becomes determined to help him break free—even if it means risking everything she came to Mars for.

Until I Love Myself: The Journey of a Nonbinary Manga Artist
A bravely blunt autobiography about confronting the tangled traumas of gender dysphoria and workplace sexual harassment. Nonbinary manga artist Poppy Pesuyama is excited when forms offer the option to choose “neither” for gender and thrilled about their new job working as an assistant for mangaka X! But then he sexually harasses them, treating them first like a girl and then like something less than human. It only lasts a few months, but in some ways it never ends. Born into a body they hate and still reeling from the abuse they faced seven years ago, Pesuyama begins to rail at their past, their friends, and even their mother as they try to come to terms with who they are and what happened to them.
Belle of the Ball - By Mari Costa
High-school senior and notorious wallflower Hawkins finally works up the courage to remove her mascot mask and ask out her longtime crush: Regina Moreno, head cheerleader, academic overachiever, and all-around popular girl. There’s only one teensy little problem: Regina is already dating Chloe Kitagawa, athletic all-star…and middling English student. Regina sees a perfectly self-serving opportunity here, and asks the smitten Hawkins to tutor Chloe free of charge, knowing Hawkins will do anything to get closer to her. And while Regina’s plan works at first, she doesn’t realize that Hawkins and Chloe knew each other as kids, when Hawkins went by Belle and wore princess dresses to school every single day. Before long, romance does start to blossom…but not between who you might expect. With Belle of the Ball, cartoonist Mariana Costa has reinvigorated satisfying, reliable tropes into your new favorite teen romantic comedy.
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich - By Deya Muniz
Lady Camembert wants to live life on her own terms, without marriage. Well, without marrying a man, that is. But the law of the land is that women cannot inherit. So when her father passes away, she does the only thing she can: She disguises herself as a man and moves to the capital city of the Kingdom of Fromage to start over as Count Camembert.   But it’s hard to keep a low profile when the beautiful Princess Brie, with her fierce activism and great sense of fashion, catches her attention. Camembert can’t resist getting to know the princess, but as the two grow closer, will she able to keep her secret?   A romantic comedy about mistaken identity, true love, and lots of grilled cheese.
