Actually, I love that cottagecore has given Gen Z a word for "I want to have a big garden and cook my own food and keep chickens" that isn't casually invoking colonialism and manifest destiny. I get so goddamned uncomfortable every time someone refers to their urban hobby farm as a "homestead" and I'm glad to finally see it being replaced with other terms. I will buy a million books about how to live a cottagecore lifestyle if it will convince publishers to stop marketing the "homesteader" lifestyle and will get white city dwellers to stop unironically self-identifying as colonizers.

If you ever wondered how many needles a mature larch drops, please know that not only is this not all of this years drop, it’s not even most of it.

When we first moved to Rhombus House I was a little disappointed because we had such a big old tree but it wasn’t something that produced fruits, syrup, nuts or flowers, or even especially striking fall foliage.

Now I see what I gift this century old tree is. The larch needles are spectacular mulch. It breaks down into lovely rich (if acidic) soil. The best soil we have by FAR is right under the larch.

I know I’m always preaching not raking up yard waste- but in this case I’m piling it up where it can still provide several inches of critter habitat, and break down to fertilize my grapes, blueberries, etc.

I Made Recycled Paper With Beautiful Lace Embossing | Slow Living | Silent Vlog | ASMR

Welcome! Do come in and watch as I try making recycled paper for the very first time! This was a fun and easy process but it does take some time and patience. I used a deckle and mold made from up-cycled picture frames and curtain lace, which resulted in beautiful lace embossing one one side of the paper. I hope you enjoy this quiet and relaxing handmade paper making video. Modular cottage designed to be cute

Why do factory-built houses tend to look ugly? Why can’t they be cute, like a cottage that would fit into a walkable neighborhood? New urbanists have been wrestling with that question for many years.

Bruce Tolar, an architect based in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, asks: “Would you rather have a little manufactured house with the wrong-sloped roof and no porch, or would you like one that's very similar in square footage but has a great roof and a little bit of nice detailing on the porch?”

The assumption is that many home buyers would prefer the attractive cottage, and such a modular house recently won an Urban Guild Award. Built in the Franklin Homes factory in North Alabama, the house prototype was placed in Tolar’s development of cottages in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. “We have a tenant who’s very happy with it,” he says. “Now that we’ve done it, we can do it again under the right conditions. We hope to make that happen.”
