incoming college freshman advice !

Go to class, even if you don't feel like it. This isn't high school anymore where you can drop a class anytime you want.

Don't commit to 8am classes or you'll regret it. It's a waste of time, energy, and you'll have a hard time learning when there are loads of tasks and you have to get up in the morning and run to uni.

Invest in good quality school supplies, even if it costs more than usual. You will spend more buying poor quality things each time it breaks frequently. To find good quality things that you can use for several months or so.

You go to class for attendance and ask questions to your classmates, and go home to study basically everything. Most of the time this is actually what happens. You teach yourself and put all your effort for your own good.

Stay organized and disciplined. Have fun but be serious in studying. Make organized schedules, comply with your tasks right away, ready a syllabus for advanced studying, and have as much sleep as possible. Even if you fail it at times, organizing and discipline will still become a habit.

Connections. Make friends or acquaintances. Networking is very important in college. These are the people who you ask after lectures for other concerns, the people you help and would help you, and the people you study with. Talk to everyone, from your seatmate to your professors, about anything that would help you go on in college. You don't have to be an extrovert, just communicate. However, NEVER JOIN FRATERNITIES, it's useless.

Analyze everyone first before choosing a friend group. If you join a friend circle and they turn out to be 🚩, leave right away or cut them off. They will push you down in college. Join friend groups that don't exhaust or drain you, choose the ones that make your quality of life better. DO NOT TRY TO FIT IN, just be yourself and you'll find your people.

Stand up to bullies. Yes, bullies still exist in college. They, apparently, exist everywhere at any point in life. But unless you want your 4 or more years of college in hell, do not let them disrespect you. If you can fight, fight them to leave you alone. If you can't, find someone who will.

Enjoy your youth. Go to parties, drink, have fun, and all that. But do not be addicted to the point that you prioritize your vices over studying. Sometimes, partying can help you de-stress.

Approach your professors. Ask questions and raise concerns if you have. We have professors that only showed up to class when we approached them, despite not being present for several weeks already. Seek advice if you also need it, but understand that they, too, are busy so weigh their schedules too.

Join organizations, and clubs, and be a student leader if you have the time for it. It's beneficial for your experience as you'll need it for the industry. Plus, you'll meet other seniors that would give you advice and maybe even help you in your subjects.

If you don't have to work, don't. Enjoy your college years and you'll find yourself more focused on it. You can improve much faster.

Be serious on day one and it'll be smooth sailing from there. Do not tell yourself "I will just do great next sem/year/term" repeatedly, start doing great the first day you enter there but do not overdo it. Freshman year will AFFECT your whole college GPA/GWA so take it seriously. Ace your freshman and sophomore year so you'll have a strong foundation for when you take harder classes that will kick your ass later.

Do not tolerate your classmates, profs, or anyone's bad behaviors. They will do it until the end of time if they're not stopped now.

Save money. You'll need it. You will have college classmates who spend a lot because they have a lot of money or are just undisciplined, big spenders. Stay away from them. Have fun but be wary of your money. You don't wanna go broke.

Assess your degree during your freshman year. If you don't like it, save yourself by dropping or shifting majors. It'll be harder to stop when you decided you don't like what you're doing in your senior years.

Before deciding anything from then on, think about it carefully. Always ask yourself if you're sure multiple times. Calmness and wise decision makings are necessary for college. Impulsiveness will lead you nowhere.

Study and think of your possible future career(s) and salaries since day 1 of your freshman year. As you progress, it may change. But it's great to think about your future the moment you enter college.

Get free scholarships when you need them. College will need a lot of financial assistance.

Drop a class when you are loaded already. There are classes that won't be that necessary for your major. If you're not sure, go ask your school counselors for advice.

Find support. From your college friends, your old friends, your professors, family, organizations, pets, and people who you can trust that will help and support your progress. College is a draining point of life for students, that's why help (and asking for it) is necessary.

I find super interesting how the armorer let Din keep the dark saber despite excommunicating him from the tribe.

He’s technically their leader now, and of course she won’t accept him as mandalorian but still lets him keep the saber, his helmet and the armor for his foundling.

Seeing how she believes the saber’s mythos, if she despised Din for what he did, she’d have taken the saber herself (pretty sure she’d be able to defeat our non saber-expert Din). I feel like she’s doing what any spiritual leader would do because it’s their duty but she has nothing against Din, her actions also may imply some little faith in him finding redemption.

“The dark saber is a more noble weapon for you to wield” he’s an apostate in her eyes now yet she lets him keep it? HMMMM

I have another Welsh language question. What is the word for butterfly? Only on the subject of popty ping not being the word for microwave, I'm fairly certain I learned that pili pala (spelling?? I'm sorry) is the Welsh for butterfly from the same source and now doubts abound muchly. Thank you for teaching us!

Pili Pala is very common! That's accurate. As with most animal names, though, there's a lengthy list, but the difference is basically dialect. However... well. We basically can't stop naming animals and particularly the butterfly and the names are batshit.

oh, are you familiar with the BoM side story? where arthur dreams of different characters in different fairy tales? i’ve become so! obsessed! with the snow queen versions of sebaciel. ciels outfit is so pretty on him!! but i love a ciel that left everything behind to stay with sebastian.. and sebastian, he’s been so lonely for so long that when he gets a pretty boy he can’t let him go. when someone tries to save him they not only get a “no” but get forcefully snow-blasted right out the door. they understand each other because no one sees the beauty in desolation like they do… so of course they stay isolated in a castle together.

there’s the panel where sebastian’s wrapping his coat around ciels whole body… sebastian acting so smugly to ciels rescuers… the line where ciel says he belongs to the devil… i could live here forever… please consider this cold angle of sebaciel

I AM! AND IT'S ONE OF MY FAVE EXTRAS OUT THERE!!

The implication that the whole dream was of Sebastian's doing (which he is very capable of judging by GWA) brings out such an interesting twist to it - we can see a glimpse of Sebastian's actual opinion on other characters! But I'm of course going to talk a little about Ciel solely for today hehe

I might be wrong since I only have ru and eng translation at hand, but the way Ciel talks about his heart being frozen and eye belonging to the devil makes me think of these acts as essentially same thing, especially given that he "adapted beautifully to the world of Ice" by Sebastian's words. I mean that his heart being frozen doesn't equal to death or inability to feel, but rather just that, adaptation and belonging.

Now I know it sounded far-fetched, but the reason It caught my attention in the first place was the mentioning of the heart at all. It's a dream made by Sebastian, the 'emotionless' and 'unfeeling' demon, with clear analogy to the contract built on power, revenge, and hunger for one's soul, or at least that is how it always was portrayed before. So why would his made up dream-Ciel suddenly bring a heart into equation?

You should've seen my face when I got to the chapter were Elizabeth escapes to rCiel. Call me delulu but it suddenly made so much sense when Sebastian started talking how "human hearts are mysterious, complex things" and "no matter if you are demon or god it is truly and utterly impossible to shackle another's heart." Before that I wouldn't even think he'd have any opinion on the matters of the heart, let alone it be a stated fact to him that he can't have it in a way he can own souls or bodies.

And so that man, in his made up dream, with a made up Ciel, made that Ciel say that not only his soul (eye) belongs to the devil, but heart too. Knowing for a fact it can't belong to him in reality. I'm speechless.

Welsh Gender Neutral Family Terms

We've come up with some gender neutral Welsh family terms in the LGBTQIA+ Welsh discord I run (dm for link) lately and so far people seem to like the terms. So, this is an introduction to some of the terms we've come up with so far.

I plan to make polls eventually with these terms and any other suggestions you might have and run a little tournament to see which terms are favoured most by Welsh speaking LGBTQIA+ people.

Without further ado, here are the terms:

(f. = feminine grammatical gender, m. = masculine grammatical gender)

Chwaed(ion) f. - Sibling(s)

[‘chwaer’ (sister) + ‘brawd’ (brother). Rhymes with ‘gwaed’ (blood), reminiscent of family ties]

Chwaerydd m. - Sibling

['chwaer' + '-ydd' (masculine suffix) ]

Chwaed fy mam / fy nhad - Aunt/Uncle (Literally, my mother’s/father’s sibling)

 [Literal translation (my mother’s / father’s sibling) ]

Naith f. - Niece/Nephew

[‘nith’ (niece) + ‘nai’ (nephew) ]

Dain (Deiniau) f. - Grandparent(s)

[‘taid’ (grandfather)+ t > d + ‘nain’ (grandmother) ]

Nam-gu f.- (Grandparent)

['fy nhad-cu' + 'fy mam-gu']

Of course, these are only suggestions. So far, chwaed has been very popular and dain has been preferred over nam-gu because it's less South Walian. But I'm interested to hear what you think or hear if you have any suggestions of your own!

These terms have come from multiple users, so bear that in mind with feedback. I can pass on suggestions to the users who coined them.

Grammatical gender is unavoidable in Welsh, but grammatical gender does not necessarily equal gender gender. E.g. the German word for girl 'maedchen' is grammatically neutral. In addition to this, certain suffixes in Welsh are gendered, which affects how words behave in certain sentences.

How do I begin to express the amount of love I have for YiDiao's dynamic?? I swear I am unable to shut up about this show and watch it normally.

There's so much pressure on Yi to be strong and capable, as a man, as a son, as a partner, as a business man (harking back to what I said about his names and the tiger symbolism). Yet with Diao, he can be vulnerable and let go of those expectations. Diao is his rock!

1) คนเก่ง /khon geng/ is kinda difficult to translate cause it's praise for being a good, talented, smart etc. person. No English translation seems to have the same ring to it though, at least to me. 2) Yi earlier said Thanks too but in the way you'd expect from someone who's older to someone who's younger (ขอบใจนะ /khawp jai na/) but here he specifically says it more formally so it puts them on the same level/elevates Diao.

The fact we start this scene with Diao on his knees looking up at Yi and end it with Yi falling to his knees, carrying Diao and looking up at him!

VENTI

You were used to Venti being drunk. He was annoying and talkative when he drank too much, slurring his songs and talking about the old days.

But his drugged state was a complete 180 of who he was. He was awfully quiet, avoiding making eye contact with you.

"Venti, baby what's wrong?" You caress his face, worried about him.

"I don't deserve your love, (y/n). I am a liar." He pouts like a child. "I have a secret identity. I am the god of Anemo, I am Barbatos."

If it weren't for him being stupid as fuck right now, your heart would have melted at the expression he was making at that moment. He looked like a child caught red-handed.

"You idiot! You already told me that a long time ago!" You facepalmed.

"So, you're not mad?"

"No, I am not mad." You kiss him on his cheek.

"Okay....okay.... (y/n) ... can I get some cake in that case?" He closes his eyes slowly relaxing and leaning against you.

"Of course. What cake do you want? I will go to the city and get some?" You look at him resting on your shoulder. "Venti...? Venti...????"

You hear his soft snores and smile. He had fallen asleep while the two of you sat on the sofa.

KAEYA

"KAEYA! Stop dragging me!! You should be resting, why are we going to Angel Share???" You ask the stumbling man who was pulling you by your hand.

"I want a - I want a drink." His speech slurred.

"You shouldn't be drinking right now." You exclaim as you enter the tavern. Diluc, who was behind the counter raises an eyebrow at the two of you.

"Diiiiiiluccccc, my man!!!" Kaeya rushes towards him.

"Tch. Are you already drunk?" Diluc narrows his eyes at his sworn brother.

"Um. Pardon him. He just had his teeth removed and is under the influence of some numbing medicine that the sisters have given him." You apologize to Diluc.

"Yuh. Heh. Diloooooook I want a tall-stiff- stwooong glass of gwa-gwape juice." Kaeya slams his fist on the table.

"What!?" Diluc and you respond in unison.

"Gwaaape.... juice... you know, your ... your favorite." He grins sheepishly.

"You don't even like grape juice." You shake your head.

"Nu-uh... I like it but I don't like it because he likes it" He points at Diluc. "He likes juice but does not like me." Kaeya frowns.

"Whatever they gave him made him loose the limited braincells that he had." Diluc shakes his head and pours Kaeya a glass of grape juice.

You look at your drugged boyfriend and giggle as he coos words of appreciation to his glass of juice. You were not going to let him forget this.

DILUC

Who knew that the stoic, composed, quiet Master Diluc who never even held your hand in public would turn out to be a PDA machine when he was drugged? You certainly did not. As you support him to walk to the carriage that was supposed to take the two of you to the winery, he plants sloppy kisses on your cheek and neck.

“(Y/n), you’re so beautiful, so enchanting. What did I ever do to get such a breathtaking woman in my life?” He bites into the soft flesh at the nape of your neck.

“Ow – Diluc. What has gotten into you?” You try to pull away from him.

“You’re intoxicating, woman. I cannot get enough of you.” He pulls you closer to him.

“Di-luc!!” You try to get off his grip. “People are watching.”

“Good. Now they’ll back off from wooing you.” He bites your ear.

“Oh my god, you horndog. We need to get into the carriage.” You push him a bit. He wobbles and you grab him by the jacket.

“No! We need to go to the tavern and celebrate your beauty.” He tugs on your top. “We can get some hot chocolate…”

“I’ll make you some hot chocolate at home, let’s go now, Pleaseeee.” You pull him.

“With soft marshmallows?” He grins mischievously.

“Yes. With Marshmallows.” You shake your head, exasperated by this version of him.  The two of you climb into the carriage and you close the door.

“Now that we’re alone….” His hands grab your breasts, groping them obscenely. You hold back a moan. “I am going to have these marshmallows before my hot chocolate.” He squeezes them as you smack him on the head.

The delightful aroma of cinnamon filled the air as you set aside the tray of baked goods. Your hands were sore and achy after continuously putting together the Weathervane’s signature cinnamon buns. From the corner of your eye you spotted a familiar hand cheekily hovering over the hot tray, you didn’t hesitate to usher it away, “Ty! I just finished baking those, you gotta wait for them to cool down or you’ll burn yourself…again.” The curly headed boy gave you a sheepish grin before walking over to you and placing his hands on your waist, “It’s not my fault you’re so good at baking,” he kissed the knuckles on your sore hands, “but, I promise I’ll be careful this time.” You shook your head in amusement before joking, “Always the ulterior motive, Galpin,” you gestured beside you, “but lucky for you, I have one prepared and ready to eat.” Tyler pulled you into a quick kiss before picking up the cinnamon bun, “I knew I was dating you for a reason!” You raised an eyebrow teasingly, “Careful now, or I may think you’re using me for my godly baking skills.” The tall brunette let out an exaggerated gasp, “How’d you find out?”

Tyler was quick to finish the cinnamon bun you had made for him, walking up to you to hug from behind as you were stocking the front counter. “Tyler, you’re gonna scare away the customers! See- there’s already that old man staring!” You harshly whispered. The cheeky boy chuckled before spinning you around, “Let him stare. Besides, he’s just mad he doesn’t get to do this.” Tyler leaned in to capture you in a sweet kiss, any complaints you had in mind disappearing as you focused on the brunette on your lips. You pulled away after a bit, “And you wonder why we never get scheduled together.” A customer rung the front bell interrupting the two of you, your face still slightly flushed from Tyler’s antics, “Hey! What can I get for you today?” The customer was a tall boy roughly you and Tyler’s age, “Hey. I’ve never seen you ‘round here before.” You smiled at the boy and explained, “Yeah, I don’t usually work at the front, I do all the baking.” The tall boy leaned in, “Oh yeah? What’s your favourite coffee here? I’ll buy it for you. Consider it a thanks for making-” Upon hearing the interaction, Tyler had inched closer to you wrapping his arms around you from behind eyeing the boy in front of him. Rolling his brown eyes, Tyler interrupted, “They don’t drink coffee,” he deadpanned, “now what do you want?”

Stunned by the sudden interruption, the boy could only mutter out, “Just a cappuccino.” After processing the order, Tyler pulled you away from the front counter giving you an extended kiss as his eyes taunted the poor boy. Your face was tinted pink as you pulled away, lightly scolding the boy for being so cocky but smiling nonetheless. “You’re lucky you’re cute Ty.” You teased. The Galpin boy could only grin as he went to prepare the customer’s order. Before your hands could reach for the finished cappuccino, he gently pushed you aside, “I’ll do it.” You raised an eyebrow before watching Tyler hand out the order, the poor customer avoiding eye contact with you as Tyler spoke to him in a hushed whisper. Walking back to you, the honey eyed boy had a smirk on his face before leaning in to kiss you on the forehead. You shook your head in amusement, “What did you say to that poor boy?” The curly headed boy shook his head before teasing you, “Nothing of your concern, now c’mere.” Tyler’s muscular arms reached around you as he pulled you in closely, whispering, “Don’t even worry about him.” He closed the gap between two of you kissing you deeply whilst he cupped your face. You made a mental note to make the coffee boy jealous more often.

fav TWOMP episode till date ? (this includes GWA eps too)

THIS IS SUCH A TOUGH QUESTION…. omg… i tend to prefer twomp episodes over gardening with argos, just because theyre serial episodes whereas gwa are more episodic. (both are very episodic given the nature of analogue horror) my favorites are either mr plants new job and mr plant sees the stars. i also love black beach but everyone loves that episode.

i love mr plants new job for so many reasons.. especially the extended cut of that episode idk why. it feels like one of the episodes where ashur has stretched the most and shows off his growth at that point, yet it also feels like The quintessential ashur video. it’s so cool there’s three new masks in that video, ashur does some puppeteering, there isn’t stop motion, but i can’t complain because of the nature of that episode. it’s just fun to see a murderous side of mr plant after mr plant has been pretty tame to this point.

my plant sees the stars was the first twomp episode that was released when i was a fan!! it’s a really special episode to me and kind of documents the start of an era for me. also it’s such an interesting episode. it’s nice to see mr plant in the vulnerable situation for once when we see argos put in those situations. this episode is more so a feel-good summertime episode. it’s nice to finally have payoff for argos time and time again asking mr plant to go stargazing with him!

Let me explain.

There's an addendum to be had on the matter of where we go for escapism, when it's stories or fanfics that then become books if that experience of disappointment in current life, frustration and longing is shared enough (like in the case of twilight and fifth shades).

I seem the only one vocally noticing when one writes a self insert is because of their need ultimately to feel special, chosen by the character for whatever reason is desirable to them (usually tall, dark, handsome, immortal or thereabout and wealthy but not ostentatiously because money exists as preventative from problems).

But what hit me recently, and admitedly late, relates to audio. And the baldur's gate 3 people who fell hook line and sinker for Astarion might probably back me up on this because from what I understand, as someone who hasn't played and doesn't even know the game but got still hit by the way the pale elf got into the zeitgeist (at least of nerdy people whl play d&d old fashionably around a table monthly) is that most of the heavy lifting and heart throbbing is due to the work of Astarion's voice actor Neil Newbon.

Now, audio is a peculiar thing, go check out GoneWildAudio on Reddit and see for yourself the quite literal mind🦆it can be to have someone, speaking in your ear, addressing YOU and then go convince your brain that is *not* an actual human referring, adoring, and talking to YOU.

First: audio recordings have been around a little over 150 years. So in a way you'd think we haven't evolved to understand the difference between a recording and someone there who really whispers in your own ear.

But then again, film shocked the first time they saw the locomotive but nowadays no one would dream what's in their TV is actually part of their surroundings. And to that I argue: audio has no frame. Nothing physically breaks the illusion like the screen and its separation from your actual surroundings.

Audio doesn't have that. Put on headphones, close your eyes and with a good quality equipment (or binaural) it's freaky what audio can give the impression to your brain that's going on.

Now personal vulnerability moment: years ago I went into a rabbit hole that led me to the work of a certain GWA Voice Artist. I was writing a paper and supposedly "researching and studying" like a good observer of the human condition when I suddenly found myself nothing short of addicted to sound in the form of their very unique specific voice. to the point I took it upon myself to try and understand what kind of ton of bricks hit a performer when they share something seemingly personal and vulnerable... Via audio. Which as said above, doesn't have a defined frame that separates it from how our brains differentiate everything else that affects any of our other senses in reality. Let's just say that I realised the experience of someone whose voice presented male is vastly different from someone like me whose voice was coded femme. And that's because cishet men don't know how to respectfully interact with the subject of their porn. At least that's what I saw in my brief but intense experience as a virtual sex worker, basically.

But beside the point: voice and sound create such a good illusion because of how many more human facets come through with timbre, every breath intake, every exhale, all those imperfection that communicate "human".

Now here's where it gets tricky: there is an agreement on the swoon-worthiness of words spoken to YOU about YOU in Your ear. How "unique, amazing, exceptional, beyond whatever he dared to imagine You are, how You affect his entire world and way to see at every human after you who doesn't hold a candle to your being". Which reflects in the popularity of audio and I suspect justifies the success of Astarion beyond the video game world like, to my knowledge, no character had breached before.

But.

What struck me is one specific effect Audio has on people, and I mean beyond the physical effect of the rightfully horniness. I refer to:

self-confidence.

Please consider this an invitation to confirm or deny, but after spending days, listening to a voice telling you how amazing, and special, and sexy you are, how crazy you drive him/her/them and how they only have eyes for you, don't you start to walk a little bit taller? Head a little bit higher? Hips a little bit swayer?

And this is to say: I don't think most people have the ability to do that for themselves, to write themselves into self inserts and yet being able to praise themselves like they clearly yearn to. And audio then becomes I guess like you're masturbating with someone else's hand voice?

Btw: again kudos to fanfic writers in the Astarion realm because at least they are a step ahead the last fandom I checked and if not praising their self insert enough (ever for me, but maybe I'm just a praise slut) they definitely spend more time in the pale elf's head than I ever witnessed in the last twenty or so years I've read (and occasionally written but I will forever deny under torture) Fanfiction
