The Emancipation (I Get From Love) of Angie (12/30)

On this very day, nineteen years ago The artist of my life, Mariah Carey released what many consider her comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi on the very same day my best friend and twin flame, Angela Giaimo became emancipated from childhood.

I have never been very spiritual. I'm not Ace of Base; I struggle to see the signs. And I'm unsure what I believe about this universe but here are some things I know coincide:

Mariah Carey and Angela Giaimo are both Aries.

Neither Mariah Carey nor Angela Giaimo have middle names.

Mariah became my favorite artist primarily because of lyrics and Angela and I first bonded over us both being lyrics girlies.

Like Mariah, Angela is an amazing writer and musically inclined.

I tried to get my ex-best friend that I nicknamed "MiMi" to use The Emancipation of Mimi as the theme for her 18th birthday, just two months after Angela's 18th.

That same ex-best friend betrayed Angela, and her treachery brought Angela and I closer because I was on her side, the correct side.

I never knew Mariah's album came out on Angela's birthday until today, the number of years later that is the same as my favorite number.

When it comes to Angela, It has never been a question that our connection is inherent. I would not scoff at the concept of it being ancestral and supernatural. And while I have no mystical gifts that will tell me she is pregnant the way her brujería informed her of Saviour's impending arrival, I can sense that it's by more than chance that she's tattooed on my spirit. And why I love Angela Giaimo with my whole soul, even more than I love Mariah Carey.

The class had to write a short story using all the words from our spelling lesson. I wrote about a pregnant dolphin in captivity that simply wanted to be reuinited with her family in the ocean. I believe that simplicity can be a powerful writing tool. My descriptive writing has grown stronger since then but, sometimes it's best to go back to your roots when all you needed was a simple sentence using words from your spelling lesson. It's not always possible to wait for everything to be perfect before pursuing our dreams... some dreams should be nurtured even in the most difficult conditions! Start writing, no matter what. Let's talk about social constructs. . People will tell you gender is a social construct, and they're right. But what does that mean? . A social construct is a meaning we give to something that only exists because the majority of us believe it does. To put it simply, a dollar is worth a dollar because we've all decided it is. The truth, though, is that a dollar doesn't even exist - it's just a piece of paper or metal with someone's face printed on it. . Calendars are social constructs too. This is the year 2020 because we all accept that it is. But depending on what calendar you go by, it's actually the year 2773 (ab urbe condita), 6770 (Assyrian calendar), 1737 (Coptic calendar), 2013 (Ethiopian calendar), 4353 (Korean calendar), and so on. Which one is "correct" really doesn't matter - it's just a way to measure things. . Which brings us to gender. Yes, people have wee wees and hoo hoos all over the world. That's a biological construct. But the limitations we place on people based on biology is very much a social construct. Depending on where you go in the world, different societies will have a different idea of what gender looks like. Gender nonconformity looks different in India than it does in Europe and European settler culture than it does in the various American indigenous cultures than it does in etc. etc. And the roles and behavioural expectations of men and women are different from culture to culture, and sometimes city to city. . Now, social constructs are "real" in that they can very much influence your life. A poor person knowing that money is a social construct doesn't make them any less poor, and telling your boss that time is a social construct when you show up late for work isn't going to make you any less fired. But it does mean these realities are only realities because we all agree they are. . Do you ever just look into a mirror for too long? Me too. So I started with mirror and what came out is uh...it is what it is. Maybe about the feeling of what it is to stare for too long. Maybe just a dump from my hell-hole brain. Maybe inspired slightly by the egos. Who knows:

There’s mirrors around here. That blink and reach. Breathing slow, take deep breaths. Reach right through your teeth when you smile. Tug at your tongue. Steal your breakfast.

You look too long and you’ll realize there’s things you can’t put your finger on. What you did. Who pulled the string. Where the milk was spilled, when does the hair stop growing whose nose are you wearing which way is inside upside downside outside stop looking.

But you don’t, will you? Because you see the projection of film on your corneas. And you can’t trace from where. And you won’t admit it. You want to know. If you are. The star.

Look away, pull out your teeth, trap the fingers when you see them crawl up to your uvula. You have to watch. You wont see them under your skin. Don’t feel them twirling your nerves hanging like hairs from your gums. Let them out. You’ll forget the way your legs are intended to split. Rotting cross-legged. Massaging your shoulders and digging bruises into your sides. They’ll make you ticklish. Don’t laugh. Forget the way they sanded down your hands to bone as they locked fingers with yours. You know them, right? Or are we thinking of different people? Different times.

We weren’t meant to see our own eyes. Peek at the dilation. Catch the winks of too many you’s all slobbering over the thought of finally getting to pluck your eyes out. And popping them into their own sockets. The pleasure of filming a sequel. If you won’t look away, then, at least, don’t ask questions. You won’t be the one who answers.

I also get inspiration from nature. I like to take walks and let my imagination take me places I never thought I would go. 'Don't limit your challenges, challenge your limits' means getting out of comfort zones, thinking outside the box, and challenging what is comfortable. Sometimes, we get into an inspirational rut and lose sight of new ways to find ideas. We get comfortable in the safety of tried and true. But what do you do when the same old methods don't work and you're still uninspired? That's when you try new things! Instead of reading, play that video game.
