#He just wanted the line to be Roman and Chinese???

I have never been so unimpressed with Rick's lack of knowledge for timelines
Okay, so Rick says that Seneca Gracchus is captured in the Parthia wars with Rome, specifically the Battle of Carrhae this happens in 50 ish BCE
“Not bad, kid. Ever heard of the Battle of Carrhae? Huge disaster for the Romans. They fought these guys called the Parthians on the eastern border of the empire. Fifteen thousand Romans died. Ten thousand more were taken prisoner.” “And one of the prisoners was my ancestor Seneca Gracchus?” “Exactly,” Mars agreed. “The Parthians put the captured legionnaires to work, since they were pretty good fighters. Except then Parthia got invaded again from the other direction—” “By the Chinese,” Frank guessed. “And the Roman prisoners got captured again.” “Yeah. Kind of embarrassing. Anyway, that’s how a Roman legion got to China." (SON)
Now, it's then said that Xu Fu, a Chinese Alchemist, was the descendent of Seneca Gracchus. Because the only reason they got to China, as Mars said, is through Seneca Gracchus (also known as Sung Guo)
She was telling him stories about heroes, pretending they were all related to Frank: one was Xu Fu, who sailed in search of the elixir of life. The rainbow image had no sound, but Frank remembered his mother’s words: He was your great-great-great-… She would poke Frank’s stomach every time she said great-, dozens of times, until he was giggling uncontrollably.
So Xu Fu is his ancestor, except Xu Fu lived in 200BCE. We know he's directly related due to the whole "he's your great great great-".
Now, this is not CE, this is BCE. Which means that 200 BCE is earlier than 50 BCE.
But this is how the family line is introduced to China to our knowledge! So this doesn't make any sense. Xu Fu can't be Frank's ancestor while Seneca is also his ancestor. Seneca wouldn't have existed when Xu Fu did.
Of course, we can also try to assume that Xu Fu is related to one of Seneca's kids, who get with one of Xu Fu's descendants... but uh-
Now, we do assume that somehow Xu Fu (who has no noted children) did have children, and I have theories on how this could work for the purposes of Rick's timeline. We can then assume those kids had kids who would have kids.
But Chinese families rarely moved from their homelands (though I'm uncertain how firm the stance on that is in the modern day). So Xu Fu's family likely wouldn't leave the coastal area that they'd be from. While Seneca would be originally placed in the North West ish, and any descendants would likely be there as well. Those are pretty far apart.
So it still doesn't really work!

hi katie jovenshires im a big fan. if ur ok with sharing, what ships are in the botb au and what are the vibes for each 👀
thank you so much!! <3<3<3
hmm i've been thinking about this and i think i'm only deadset on spommy, ianthony, kolivia, and amangela as far as like. my canon goes. not sure what if any other ships im gonna include... ive gone back and forth with shaymien and shaynse too but not sure!!
but, i will say, for the most part the edits are mostly left up to interpretation so you can all decide whatever ships you want really!! (or if you don't want any ships at all that's cool too <3) like i've said to me the botbau is a little collaborative barbie world that we can all make whatever we want out of. like i told someone the other day - if you wanna write a fic or make an edit or something for this and it doesn't exactly line up with what i might write or think ab the au... PLEASE go for it. it is out there, public domain now, do with it what you will. and i will love and eat it up no matter what!!
as for the vibes in MY head, i will throw them under the cut so this post doesn't get too long KFNLKNKFNF
spommy: i've covered this a little before here so if you want the full version check that out but BASICALLY spommy is kind of rivals-to-friends-to-lovers except tommy has an Extremely one-sided beef and spencer just thinks he's cool and wants to be buds. eventually spencer wins him over and then... uh oh! love! once again skimmin some details that, if i ever Write A Fic for it, will be spoilers. but that’s the idea you know
ianthony: taking this directly from my dms to lilac but basically. ianthony botbau my beloveds....... to relearn how to co-pilot something with someone that should come so second-hand to you but you're both different people now but your feelings carry through anyway for who they were and are and will be........ yeah theyre everything to me. in a way it's a mirror to life/what actually happened to them with smosh (art imitates life) but the divorce era was even MORE famous because they're like a household name so it was a lot more pressure. idk yet if they were together beforehand and then broke up and now they're getting BACK together or if they had unresolved feelings they never dealt with and now they're struggling to reconcile them with their renewed friendship AND reunited band/the fame that comes from that... but either way they are Messy. im obsessed.
kolivia: kolivia in this au fascinates me because in my head keith is kind of known for being a player and fucking around but i think he stopped that Ages ago because. these two are basically dating. like they don't put a label on it and it's not public and i don't even know if THEY know how in love they are. but they live together. they sleep together "just to blow off steam" (come on now). they don't date other people. everyone can see it but them type beat. olivia's like "he's not my boyfriend" and then picks up the phone and is like "hi baby do you want chinese for dinner" NDLFKNANKSFLN like they are exclusive and they have deep feelings for each other but they are both so deeply in denial that they swear they're not dating. they have realistically been in a relationship for like five years.
amangela: RIVALS TO LOVERS AGAINNNN i have talked about this one a Lot with baflegacy bc like. they are my roman empire. at least these two have met on multiple occasions and actually fought with each other - they keep meeting at gigs/in bars and bickering. angela "clearly abba is the best band ever" giarratana and amanda "WHAT about fleetwood mac you DUMB ASS" lehan-canto. like they meet a bunch and EVERY time they end up bickering. meanwhile angela keeps seeing thirst traps of amanda on tiktok and being like "why are all the lesbians obsessed with her she SUCKS" and chanse and arasha, who have heard this three million times, are like "yeah okay buddy whatever helps you sleep at night." meanwhile amanda is living her bliss <3 and then they realize they're both in battle of the bands and uh oh! things come to a head!

Archon war anon
I'm fairly certain that canon implies that Xiao didn't have too many masters, but I'm just having fun with it. I haven't hot potatoed him too much in what I have written, but I'm planning to pass him off for a bit to a bunch of Sumeru tribes who don't actually know what to do with an adeptus, and so just keep trading him off for benefits based on the idea that he's definitely got value, but they don't know what to do with him. I'm also doing this so that Morax later names him after himself? Like, "Xiao" is pretty Chinese sounding, and it would be weird for another land to have used it as a name. That in itself means nothing, bu I was like, "A perfect opportunity to make things weird!"
I did go check Cuijue architecture before I wrote the last ask and was all suspicious about it since I noticed that circle out front had that same square pattern as Guili stuff, but the pillars were very distracting!
We actually do know of gods to do with dreams - the Sumer Companion gods! But, they're obviously not in Liyue, and also not in Chenyu. The most I could find for the god of Chenyu Vale was the line "she made many dreams come true" in An Ancient Sacrifice of Sacred Brocade. Fujin and the others betrayed their god because they wanted to keep the humans safe, and the god was going to flood Chenyu Vale as a last ditch attempt to fight Morax.
The Dunyu-star connection comes from the Records of Jueyun book. The book also says "the redoubts of the Dunyu Valley stood tall and maintained prosperous relations with Liyue Harbor up till 500 years ago"
Very fair about thinking that the stone ruins all have to be old, but at the same time, given what I know about how ruins tend to work, they seem way too intact to be as old as all that? Like, people would have take all of that nice, preworked stone, because that's what people do. Like sure, some of them are kind of far, but then any quarries are also probably pretty far. Especially since Guili looks so much more ruined?
Tianqiu does look pretty temple-like, but also they kind of remind me of this documentary I saw talking about shitty Roman apartments? Like windowless and damp and all that because you spent basically all your time away. And even if it was a temple, temples need like staff to take care of them and priests? It looks big enough that it would probably need a proportionately big staff. I don't know, I'm not actually invested in this theory, it's just kind of fun to think about/argue.
As for when Guizhong died, yeah no confirmation on exactly when, but still at least 1700 years before the war ended.
What I could find on the move to the harbour was mostly referring back to one of the books - Stone Tablet Compilations - which was pretty vague, saying the war killed Guizhong, and "thereupon" Morax took their people to the harbor. And then the event that talked about the flood doesn't mention Guizhong dying, but in it Madame Ping does seem fairly specific about the actual move only taking a dozen days? Like, longer than you'd expect for that short distance, but not a "have to re-gather everyone" type situation (but honestly re-gathering would be really interesting to explore? and I want to see where you got that impression from) The teaser Echoes of the Heart mentions Guizhong's death and implies it was early in the war, but not how it happened or what was going on with their people after. And that's all I could find referring to her death specifically, so yeah, we know nothing. :(
I'm glad it wasn't too much!
no worries, it wasn't too much!
yeah i'm also fairly certain xiao only had one master before morax, but the concept is really interesting (and kinda funny). the idea of him winding up in sumeru and the gods there being like: "you want this magic kid?" "what does he do?" "idk but he's magic so he must be valuable" "you're right, i'll take him" .... "you want this magic kid?" fucking hilarious ngl
my only point of contention (that sounds ultra serious what) with the roman appartment point is that this is liyue? so i'm not sure they'd have a random ruin with no explanation be something that we wouldn't expect from a completely different culture? i guess it could always just be an adaptation though. but yeah, if it was a temple, there'd deffinitely be people living there. if not there, then in the surroundings – i'm just not sure if that would qualify as an entire town, more than just a temple complex. anyway, i've not no smoking gun on tianqiu valley either, we just know so little, but it is fun to throw things at the wall hahah
i have to be honest in that i completely forgot about madame ping's dialogue in moonlight merriment. like i had done the research on this mess for cyanide before that event came out? and since i wasn't even going to get to the founding of liyue harbor in the fic, i didn't bother changing my notes. but yeah, if madame ping says it took more than ten days (original chinese text), then yeah they probably migrated as soon as the flood took over. thankfully the cinematic specifies it was the guili assembly – knowing mihoyo they could've just left it as 'a flood destroyed their home' and never clarified LMAO like even then obviously it would've been the assembly, but still. unless i'm just missing stuff from the original chinese text, it doesn't, however, specify that it took them over ten days to get to the harbor. like it says the adepti stayed with them for ten days, but not how long their journey actually was? it was probably ten days, the harbor isn't all that far from the assembly and it'd be weird for the adepti to just... leave them halfway through the journey, but still. this is what i mean by the lack of clarification being a pain in the ass ToT
the scattering and gathering part actually comes from the guili plains' viewpont. it says "those who gathered here were once again scattered" in reference to the war destroying it. 'scattered' doesn't sound to me like a term you'd use for "there was a flood and so they fled together in a group with the adepti". it sounds more like "everyone fled to different places during the chaos, and then either morax gathered all of them back together to then migrate as a group immediately after it happened (like as soon as the flood settled morax was like "ok where's everyone"), or he took longer to gather them (like longer than ten days)". there's also the issue of the geo travel diaries? which like- i know morax being the god of the stove was disproven, but i'm not sure if that disproves the entire legend? which implies that people had to re-learn how to fucking cook when they first settled in the harbor. that might just be weird wording though, and since it's a word-of-mouth legend, also exaggeration.
the worst offender here i think is zhongli's dialogue during his first story quest. we know he's a little shit sometimes, but he's not known to outright lie when it comes to debating the history of liyue – he even goes out of his way to debate things that have become twisted by time if he finds himself in the conversation (because for some reason he also sometimes just lets the misconceptions be? which- i mean sure, he probably realizes it's an impossible task to try and fix every single erroneous tale in liyue). but when the scholars he's arguing with ask him if it's true that the lord of geo taught the people how to build houses when liyue harbor was being constructed (and how the model he used was made from mora), zhongli just says that yeah that's true. like ????? this either implies that the people didn't know how to build houses by the time they got to the harbor? as though they had been separated for so long that they had to re-learn it (which would make no sense if less than two weeks ago they'd been living in this advanced civilization that they'd built)?? like entire generations had passed??? or like- this could also be that zhongli taught them a new style of houses, going by the fact the architecture is not like the one in the assembly. given we now have madame ping saying it was more than ten days between the fall and the harbor, my only guess is that morax went 'hey i think we should try a new building style, how about this?' and made a harbor house as we know them entirely out of mora, and the people went 'ooo teach us how'. i guess there's always the possibility that, since the way it's worded in the dialogue (i don't have the originla chinese for this i'm afraid), that zhongli is saying that the fact the model house was made of mora is true, and not that he had to teach everyone how to make houses from scratch all over again. it could be that?? it's still weird.
it could always also be a case of all these things are from very early in the game, and since madame ping in moonlight merriment is the latest data we have, hers is probably more accurate? like they hadn't yet quite decided how long it was before the fall and the harbor, and that's why all the sources say different things.
still weird, though.

i'm glad you enjoyed brandon F
little note about the uniform thing, the reason why he drags on a bit on that is cause he's a reenactor, 18th century uniforms are his insane obsession. he even jokes about it in the video i sent, saying "i'm finally back to my insufferable self!" when talking about the muskets
i don't blame him tbh, after watching his content for a while i had the realization that 18th century isn't like the romans, whose equipment we deduce through archeology, old sources and guess work.
like, the actual documents that standardized 18th century uniforms still exist and are not hard to access, i realized that after Brandon noted that his source was the fucking British Royal Library in London. ( i mean ffs there's literally photos of Napoleonic era vets heres a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npSru7xEzX8)
and i honestly think its relevant, because if a million dollar historical production didn't want to put in the effort to go to a library and get the official documents. then what else they weren't bothered to get right?
but Brandon doesn't just do historical reviews he also talks a lot about the history in general. like, why fight in lines? what were marines in the 18th century? the history of tactics. and what role did cavalry play in line warfare? for example
heavens bless people of utube that manage to get hyperfixated on one topic for basically their entire life and then proceed to make stuff about it for us to watch, right? it's a delight to listen to someone who actually enjoys the subject and their subject therefore basically guarantees the authencity of what they put out
oooh but yes, the concept itself of what we actually get to know about things in what manner is fascinating in on itself. so since i was small i had been very fascinated by chinese mythology and mythology somewhat comes along with other parts of the culture and so on. and you know how the chinese culture is one of the oldest in the world?
as a result i've somewhat grown accustomed to the numbers that are typical to the span of chinese history and now whenever i go look into the history of my own country i'm actually stumped over how recently certain things happened! then again you wouldn't believe how oppressed or manipulated slovaks had been across history. ain't that right -glares at hungary-
to what extent we know which culture's history is so wild. the ability for certain historical things to simply last is absolutely incredible (such as military uniform documents or musical pieces of 18th century). fun fact! there's still messages written in stone by the soldiers of the roman empire on slovakia's territory. right near Danube, i think, p sure i visited that
thank fuck for reliable sourcing and also thank u for that vid that's gon come in handy for clothing references at Some point, i can feel it
and you are absolutely correct, yes! it Is relevant! as mister Brandon has said, there's of course a certain leeway allowed when it comes to more kid oriented stuff, but i'll admit! i was surprised to learn that serious historical productions apparently put less effort into these kind of things than the sea beast did (i don't usually watch those kind of things, i'm very fantasy/sci-fi and cartoon focused)
this kind of muddling of history that may seem "insignificant" to money grabbing bastards really screws up the perception of the eras for people who don't really have the time or the drive to look into things themselves. it's annoying
oh while we are on this history stuff, i saw this originally in utube shorts, but Apparently they are making a netflix movie or smth about Cleopatra and they made her black?? which is weird, considering that Cleopatra was greek and all that stuff. like don't get me wrong, yes give silenced/less known cultures like black folk more space to present themselves and who they are but like don't do it in a way that heavily skews the history? why are you going out of your way to create misinformation that could heavily impact understanding of history by taking out an already famous (not poc) person instead of Actually making the space for historically important black people. like maybe why not make a movie about that one super rich king from the southwestern coast of Africa (i think) that crashed the egyptian economy twice by being just too damn generous. that would be SO much more helpful to black peeps' history than shoving a black person into the place of a white one
i swear films nowadays either lack soul, heart, spine or brain like 98% of time

Michael Dante DiMartino
He is best known, together with Bryan Konietzko, as the co-creator of the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, both on Nickelodeon.
Before Avatar, DiMartino worked for twelve years at Film Roman, helping to direct King of the Hill, Family Guy and Mission Hill, in addition to his own animated short, Atomic Love, which was screened at a number of high-profile film festivals. The dedication to his father's memory can be seen in the penultimate episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
1. why I have chosen to work on this particular animator.
When I was young, I learned about "Avatar: The Last Airbender".
I was attracted by his painting style and characters full of details and rich expressions.
There are also cultural elements incorporated into it.
On the basis of fantasy, we have done a more in-depth and historical exploration, unified the storyline and animation, and the characters’ facial expressions are in place.
As an animation depicting war, battles are essential. However, as a children's work to be broadcast on Nickelodeon, they must find a way to show cool martial arts battles without using violence, and finally found a solution in traditional Chinese martial arts.
The imperial masters from the four countries demonstrated their own imperial arts respectively, but their moves were different.
The water-good country uses Tai Chi, which is a concept in Chinese Taoist culture. Its original intention is to comply with morality and nature. Just as the Supreme Good Ruoshui said, “Water is good for all things without fighting."
The earth-power country uses Hong Fist. Hong Fist Quan refers to the pictograms of various animals, requires strength and strength, and advocates using force to convince people, which is in line with the earthbender's use of soil;
the country of Qihe uses Baguazhang, which pays attention to its own flexibility and harmony with Qi. The martial arts of the country can be perfectly combined;
the Fire Nation uses Shaolin martial arts, which is a relatively comprehensive martial arts system.
2. the details and aspects of his life that I have uncovered through. intend to show in your project.
• BRYAN: Mike and I were really interested in other epic "Legends & Lore" properties, like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, but we knew that we wanted to take a different approach to that type of genre. Our love for Japanese Anime, Hong Kong action & Kung Fu cinema, yoga, and Eastern philosophies led us to the initial inspiration for Avatar.
• BRYAN: We knew we wanted the "magic" in our show to be different than the typical wand-wielding spell-casting fare. For us, it had to be natural and physical, with a source and rules and limitations - and most importantly it had to be a skill rather than just a power, something that a practitioner had to learn and strive for. We wanted the elemental "bending" to be based on authentic Chinese traditional martial arts, believing this would lend a beauty and resonance to the animation and the fictitious disciplines. Once we had that idea, I started looking for a Kung Fu teacher/Martial Arts consultant. My search led me to Sifu Kisu and I began training with him right away. He has been a valuable part of the project ever since.
Discovering that he is a spiritual and true spirit, and likes to interpret the story in a way of competition.
3. visual style / animation techniques / methods
Visual Style: Exquisite visual effects and detailed painting style. Featuring rich colors and details, showing off delicate lines and scene designs.Incorporating elements of Asian culture and art, such as Chinese martial arts, Japanese animation, etc., these elements give his works a unique style and atmosphere.Animation Techniques and Methods: Visuals and narrative blend together to present the storyline.
Use technical means such as animation shots, editing, and perspective switching to add drama and visual impact to the storyline. In terms of character design, he pays attention to the character's personality characteristics and emotional expression, and shapes the character's image and personality through detailed expression and action design.

honestly the title is very direct with what the game is about. you play as Jill, a bartender in va-11 hall-a (referred to simply as Valhalla) in a technologically advanced world and a corrupt city. you serve drinks to your clients, have long conversations with them where stuff about the characters and world is revealed, and tolerate their weirdness. the game is visual novel heavy and focuses a lot on the talking, which is fine with me! i like the combination of lots and lots of dialogue and casual gameplay where uu still kind of need to use uur brain
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's a lot of cute girls in the game (re: waifu bartending and the true lesbian experience)
to the left is Dorothy, a lilim robot (basically an advancedsex robot. her product line in particular is modeled to be on the younger side physically) she's really sweet and bubbly and she has a kind personality. to the right is Dana, Jill's boss. i don't know much about Dana yet but a lot of mystery surrounds her. a lot of characters say she's very strong and there's lots of rumors about how she got her prosthetic arm (a lot of rumors may have been started by her.) also Jill's wallpaper is of herself and Dana together and she apparently has lots of photos of Dana in her gallery. i hope i can see them get together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i find the GUI very satisfying. there's also a home segment where uu sit at home with Jill's cat, fore, and browse Jill's phone. uu can also buy stuff. Jill gets distracted very easily so sometimes uu have to buy things from the online store so Jill would be less distracted at work (SO REAL she's the most accurate representation of ADHD lesbians ever)
since it takes place in a cyberpunk setting there's some political shit going on, the city they live in is a really Bad city with lots of crime and injustice, and the organization "white knights" (basically the cops but stronger and more organized) are known to be power hungry and use their power unfairly for the wrong reasons. also the prime minister seems a bit incompetent? there's also something about a hacker called Alice rabbit... but also at the start of the game, Jill had this weird dream about a girl and occasionally the girl appears on the bar's tv for a split second...... yeah there's a lot going on here
anyways i find the game really fun and i hope to play it more when i have more free time! im still super early in the game . i don't have a singular favorite character yet bc I'm still at the beginning so idk much about them yet and they all look cool to me!!

infodump about an oc
OKAY, SO! the oc i will discuss here is connected to nyxa, an oc i discussed here but reading that infodump isn't necessary to understand this one (not like anyone reads these anyway /lh)
remmeber when i said that, as far as nyxa knows she's the only surviving member of her family after they all killed each other?? WELL! that's wrong she's not the only survivor. her older sister survived as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is Amos faust! (or fraust... i spelled her last name differently sometimes) although Amos isn't really her real name, it's just an alias that she always goes by. shes the head of a detective agency! (in my phoebe and nyxa infodump i mention that nyxa becomes a head of a detective agency when she's an adult. she takes over amos' agency)
her backstory is she studied in cloud tower but in her 3rd year she dropped out and disappeared. no one came looking for her because.. no one really knew her, yk? she was quiet, mysterious, she avoided everyone and everyone avoided her. eventually after leaving cloud tower she began a personal investigation where she hunted down a specific person/group that had something to do with her family's demise (like an enemy of the family) and it led her to a detective agency. she concluded that her target was the director. so she entered the agency, climbed the ranks, became trusted and known within the agency, until she had the opportunity to get close enough to the director and kill them. except, she was wrong about her target, so now she had the blood of an innocent person on her hands. out of genuine guilt and regret (and also because she was emotionally attached to this agency and she figured she would have an easier time continuing her investigation within the agency) she pulled some strings and appointed herself as the new director. and she has been the director for the past ██ years.
Amos is a very eccentric person, and those who don't know her well might even regard her as scary. she arrives to strange conclusions, she comes up with strange plans, but somehow her plans always work. most of the time. the people working under her have learned not to question it. she's very skilled at fighting, spywork, reading and using people, etc. it's hard to know if any of her current personality is even true. but sometimes, one can observe that she genuinely cares for the few people who are very close to her, such as her sister nyxa and her assistant. shes also sarcastic, unafraid to speak her mind, really confident in herself and her abilities.
so how do Amos and nyxa meet again?
basically in their 3rd year at alfea, students can sign up as for different part time jobs with agencies that alfea partnered with. there's a wide range of jobs and it's meant to help the students get familiar with the work environment of the career they want to pursue in the future. yk, gain some experience, make connections, get a paycheck, etc. phoebe and nyxa try applying for many jobs but in the end they go with a detective agency. very few students applied for it so they easily get hired after they attend the orientation and pass the test, and also they think it's really cool
when they applied and worked there for a few weeks/months, the director was away on a long business trip so nyxa didn't immediately realize that her fucking sister was in the agency. and idk if she would realize it immediately either. because she hasn't seen her sister in YEARS and i like to think something separated them very early in their lives so they weren't close at all. but Amos would immediately recognize her i think
but yeah. skipping past the specifics of the situation: eventually nyxa learns the truth, she's no longer alone, she still has surviving family etc. nyxa and Amos try to rebuild a familial bond again but it's awkward bc its like.... honestly at this point in their lives they're like strangers to each other. but it's okay they take the time to get to know each other again
i like to imagine nyxa and Phoebe going on missions together with Amos as their chaperone/guardian/protector/guide ^_^
anyway yeah that's all i have to say i think

Timeline of Middle-Earth
To develop a clearer sense of the sheer scale of the timelines we’re dealing with in Middle-earth’s Ages of the Sun, I thought I would put it in perspective by comparing it to real-world history. This can be done comparatively simply because the main events of The Lord of the Ring occur in 3018-3019 BC. (3020 in Middle-earth is a very good year, conspicuously unlike our 2020.)
So if we analogize T.A. 3019 to our 2019, we can get a sense in our terms of how long ago various Middle-earth events were to (mortal) characters in The Lord of the Rings. The beginning of the Third Age, for example, would line up with 1000 BC (approximately the time of Solomon). The beginning of the Second Age would be 4441 BC, and the beginning of the (much shorter) First Age a little before 5000 BC. A lot of my dates will be from the history of the Ancient Near East and Europe, simply because those are the periods of ancient history I’m most familiar with.
Using this comparison, the beginning of the Second Age and the foundation of Númenor is roughly contemporary with the earliest development of the wheel (~4500 BC, Wikipedia tells me) and the earliest forms of writing. So if you want a timescale for just how old any elf who saw the First Age was, that’s a helpful starting point (Maglor and Galadriel are, of course, much older).
The forging of the One Ring (c. S.A. 1600) corresponds to a little before the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
The imperialist era of Númenor, under Tar-Ciryatan, begins at about the same time as the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza (~2500 BC) and lasts until roughly the end of the New Kingdom of Egypt (that’s the one that included Hatshepsut and Ramses II) a little before 1000 BC. That makes ancient Egypt really quite helpful for envisioning the span of Númenor’s history, except that Númenor also had about 1900 years of being non-terrible prior to that.
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men corresponds to around 1000 BC, around the tine of the start of the Chinese Zhou dynasty (for context, this is still well before Qin Shi Huang and the Terra-Cotta Army) and the time of David and Solomon in ancient Israel.
Arwen is born in the year 241 of the Third Age. This roughly corresponds to the time of the composition of the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer. So when Elrond tells Aragorn that Arwen is far, far older than him, he is, if anything, understating the point.
The breakup of Arnor into three realms occurs in T.A. 861. We have now skipped over a quite considerable period of time (past the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Alexander the Great in the ancient near east, andpast Qin Shi Huang in China) to the time of the Roman Republic and of the Han dynasty. So that gives some perspective on what Aragorn re-founding the kindom of Arnor means - the the people of, say, Bree, this is a kingdom from ancient history.
Around T.A. 1000 - corresponding to the time of the New Testament and the early Roman Empire - the Istari arrive in Middle-earth and the first hobbits come to Eriador (i.e. the land west of the Misty Mountains). However, the hobbits don’t cross the Brandywine and found the Shire until a long time later (T.A. 1600).
The centuries around T.A. 1300s-1400s see civil war in Arnor (incited by the Witch-king of Angmar) and Gondor, and in invasion of Arnor by the Witch-king. This corresponds to around A.D. 300s-400s in our time, and the fall of the Roman Empire.
The Shire is founded in T.A. 1601, corresponding to around our A.D. 600. This is roughly equivalent the time of the founding of Islam in our world. So the Shire’s got a very considerable history behind it!
The fall of the north-kingdom of Arnor to the Witch-king occurred in T.A. 1974. Also in the late 1900s of the Third Age, the Witch-king returns to Mordor; a Balrog appears in Moria and drives out the dwarves; and Thrain I founds the Kingdom Under the Mountain in Erebor. A little after (T.A. 2050) the line of the kings in Gondor ends and the time of the Stewards begins. This is equivalent, in our terms, to around the time of the Norman Conquest of England, and of Cahokia in North America. When Boromir asks his father why the Stewards of Gondor are not considered kings yet, he has a point.
In 2463, the White Council is formed; this is also around the same time that Gollum obtains the Ring. Roughly speaking, this is equivalent to the time of the Renaissance in Europe for us. Gollum had the Ring for a really freaking long time.
The arrival of the Rohirrim, and the granting of Calenardhon to them as the realm of Rohan (irrespective of its actual inhabitants) occurs in 2510 of the Third Age, or close to equivalent with the beginning of the Reformation for us.
The Bagginses, Tooks, and Brandybucks can trace their ancestry back to the years 1000s to 1100s in Shure-reckoning (2600s-2700s of the Third Age), equivalent to a family in our time being able to trace its lineage to the 1600s-1700s A.D.
Smaug’s destruction of the Kingdom under the Mountain is in T.A. 2770, shortly followed by the War of the Dwarves and Orcs when Thror (Thorin’s grandfather) is killed by an orc in Moria. In our terms, corresponding to 1770, around the time of the American Revolution. Thorin dies in T.A. 2941 (equiv. A.D. 1941), to to get a perspective on dwarf ages, Thorin’s lifespan is equivalent to someone being able to fight in both the American Revolution and World War II.
Bilbo is born in T.A. 2890, equivalent to 1890 (the Gilded Age) in our time. The Fell Winter, when wolves attack the Shire over the frozen Brandywine, happens when he is 10 years old.
Aragorn and Denethor are born at almost the same time, Denethor in T.A. 2930 and Aragorn in T.A. 2931. Huh, hadn’t realized that. How mich does Denethor resent that he’s an old man while Aragorn is still in the prime of his life. Anyway, this is around the 1930s in our terms.
The events of the Hobbit take place in T.A. 2941, equivalent to our 1941 - a happier year for Middle-earth than for us, certainly.
Frodo is born in 2968, equivalent to our 1968.
Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday, and the events of The Lord of the Rings, occurs in T.A. 3001, equivalent to our 2001.
So, hopefully that gives some perspective on how long ago the various events of Middle-earth’s history would feel to the mortal - or at least, human and hobbit - characters of The Lord of the Rings. The major difference is that the existence of elves mean that both written records and living memory go back far, far further for Middle-earth than they do for us.

I managed to get my hands on a copy of Dinotopia Lost, by Alan Dean Foster, which is an official novel that came out in 1996. Unlike most of the other Dinotopia novels I’ve encountered thus far, this one came out in hardcover and was aimed at adults. I’m only two chapters in, but we’re off to an excellent start because I have to keep stopping every few minutes to squee over something.
Chapter One introduces us to Pudu, a human farmer in the Northern Plains, who receives word to evacuate his family because the six-year weather cycle is entering the stage where his farm might get destroyed. There are so many delightful bits of world-building here, as well as some fun lines.
Lahat’s treasured set of shadow puppets, handed down in her family from generation to generation, were wrapped in rice paper and stowed carefully beneath the seat with the other household goods.
No sauropods, though. The true giants of Dinotopia were a bit too massive for farmwork. A Diplodocus might be fun to gambol on the beach with, but you wouldn’t want one mucking about in your taro patch.
Chapter Two brings us back to Will Denison, now a summer camp counselor at Treetown, playing tug of war with a group of humans and dinosaurs... mostly sauropods, as it turns out.
Sauropods were among the most polite of dinosaurs, a consequence of their enormous size. Unable to eschew an innate clumsiness, they compensated by moving with extreme care and precision when in the presence of those small than themselves... which meant nearly everyone else. Will had been amazed the first time he’d seen one pacing prissily down a street in Waterfall City. It was something to see a thirty-ton Apatosaurus prance.
For their part, the two juvenile sauropods enjoyed the play as much as their human counterparts. The only difference was that they calculated their weight, as opposed to their maturity, in tons instead of pounds. Socially and intellectually, they were the equivalent of the dozen bipeds.
No adult supervisors were present. By the age of fifteen, one was supposed to act like a grown-up. Freedom and play were encouraged; irresponsibility was not.
Besides, sauropods enjoy being indoors. It was a novelty supplied by human ingenuity, and allowed the great creatures to survive chillier climes than they would otherwise have been inclined to tolerate.
Like every structure in Dinotopia, the buildings of Treetown were designed to last. (”The Roman influence,” Nallab had told him. “Very demanding, those Romans.”)
...as Nallab had once told him, “Sometimes the inimical is more instructive than the benign. In between screams, try to pay attention.”
I officially dub Nallab the Sassmaster of Dinotopia; he gets all the best lines.
Shipwrecked Chinese had introduced the art of papermaking to Dinotopia hundreds of years before it reached Europe. Their descendants had raised it to an art form. Papermaking parties were an important social event among many notable families. Nor was anyone who wanted to participate left out. Dinosaurs shared enthusiastically in the pulping process.
The fact that the main conflict is a massive storm just hits me right in the feels in lieu of climate change.
It’s stated outright that the last six-year storm was the one that knocked Will and Arthur to Dinotopia in the first place. The words “Madden-Julian oscillation” keep running through my head in search of something to connect with, especially once the weathercaster starts theorizing about ocean currents.
I love how this strongly suggests the solution is “Arthur invents something again”. Science!
Nallab has the Finale by Homer, which... I just....
“You’d think that after all these centuries we’d finally have that overflow from the library at Alexandria sorted out.”
Also, we get confirmation that Deinonychus like Enit eat fish and invertebrates, which is something I’ve always wondered about.
Anyway, suffice to say I am ridiculously enjoying myself so far.

LoSlavery Is Not OUR "Original Sin" The thick lines show majority of African slaves went to Spain’s (they started trans-Atlantic slave trade) Latin American & Caribbean slave colonies, Muslim and African Countries. Few went to colony that became the US
Tumblr media
How many times have you heard that slavery was “America’s original sin”? I’m not quite sure what that means, but I think the idea is that slavery was a uniquely horrible thing that defines the United States and will stain whites forever. It’s one of the few things Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Barack Obama agree on. There are books about it. Here’s a college course at UC Davis called “Slavery: America’s Original Sin: Part 1."
The fact is, there has been slavery in every period of history, and just about everywhere. The Greeks and Romans had it, the ancient Egyptians had it, it’s all over the Bible, the Chinese and the pre-Columbian Indians had it, the Maoris in New Zealand had it, and the Muslims had it in spades. But I have never, ever heard of slavery being anyone else’s “original sin.”
About the only societies that never had slaves were primitivehunter-gatherers. As soon as people have some kind of formal social organization, they start taking slaves.
You’ve heard about slavery and mass human sacrifices of Central and South American Indians, but North American Indians were enslaving each other long before the white man showed up.
Tlingit and Haida Indians, who lived in the Pacific Northwest, went raiding for slaves as far South as California. About one quarter of the population were slaves, and the children of slaves were slaves. During potlatches, or huge ceremonial feasts, the Tlingit would sometimes burn property and kill slaves, just to show how rich they were. What’s a couple of slaves to a guy who lives in a house like this?
When we bought Alaska from the Russians in 1867, Indians were furious when we told them they had to give up their slaves. The Tlingit carved this image of Abraham Lincoln, the emancipator, to try to shame the government into compensating them for slaves.
What were called the Five Civilized Tribes of the American Southeast happily bought black slaves. In 1860, there were 21,000 Cherokee, and they owned 4,000 slaves. And that was just the Cherokee. Many took their slaves with them when they were forced to move West.
Free blacks in the South owned slaves. The fact of having been slaves didn’t stop them from wanting to be slave masters themselves. In 1840, in South Carolina alone, there were 454 free blacks who owned a total of 2,357 slaves. Only about 20 percent of Southern households had even one slave, but 75 percent of the free-black households in South Carolina owned slaves.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Don’t believe me? It’s all in this book by the expert on the subject, Larry Koger of the University of South Carolina. And he demolishes the idea that most blacks bought slaves only to get family members out of slavery. Like whites, some were kind masters and some were mean, but, for the most part, they owned slaves for exactly the same reasons whites did.
Tumblr media
There’s a whole book about this black guy, Andrew Durnford.
He had a plantation of 672 acres along the Mississippi in Louisiana, and close to 100 slaves. Another black slave owner in Louisiana, P.C. Richards, owned 152 slaves. Black slaveowners avidly supported the Confederacy. There are no accurate estimates of the number of slaves held by free blacks at the time of the Civil War, but they would have been tens of thousands.
If slavery is somebody’s Original Sin, it’s sure not ours. Take a look at this map of the slave trade, beginning in 1500.
Tumblr media
[Source: SlaveVoyages.com, click to enlarge]
The thicknesses of the lines represent numbers of slaves. What became the United States imported just around 400,000 slaves—about 3 percent of all the slaves who crossed the Atlantic. Look at all the slaves who went to Brazil and to the Caribbean Islands. They needed millions because, unlike American slaveowners who raised slave families, they bought grown men and worked them to death. And let us not forget, virtually every slave on this map was caught by blacks or Arabs.
And look at all the slaves who ended up in North Africa and the Middle East.
That’s millions of them going to Muslim countries at exactly the same time slaves were crossing the Atlantic. And Arabs had been taking black slaves out of Africa, across the Sahara, for 900 years before America was even discovered—and a forced march across the desert was a lot worse than crossing the Atlantic. In this article about Africa’s first slavers—the Arabs—historian Paul Lovejoy estimates that over the centuries, Muslims took about 14 million blacks out of Africa [Recalling Africa’s harrowing tale of its first slavers – The Arabs – as UK Slave Trade Abolition is commemorated, March 27, 2018]. That is more than the 12 million who went to the New World.
And you might ask, where are the descendants of all those Middle Eastern slaves? America has millions of slave descendants. Why don’t you see lots of blacks in Saudi Arabia or Syria or Iraq? Arabs castrated black slaves so they wouldn’t have descendants.
Tumblr media
Muslims were even more enthusiastic about enslaving white people. Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters, by Prof. Robert C. Davis is the best book on the subject. Remember the Barbary Pirates of North Africa? Between 1530 and 1780 they caught and enslaved more than a million white, European Christians. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Arabs took more white slaves south across the Mediterranean than there were blacks shipped across the Atlantic.
Mostly, Muslim pirates captured European ships and stole their crews. In just three years, from 1606 to 1609, the British navy admitted it had lost 466 British merchant ships to North African pirates [Counting European Slaves on the Barbary Coast Past & Present, August 2001]. Four hundred sixty-six ships in just three years. Arabs took American slaves. Between 1785 and 1793 Algerians captured 13 American ships in the Mediterranean and enslaved the crews. This is a 1804 battle between Arab pirates and the USS Enterprise.
Tumblr media
It was only in 1815, after two wars, that the United States was finally free of the Barbary pirates.
Muslim pirates also organized huge, amphibious slave-catching assaults that practically depopulated the Italian coast. In 1544, Algerian raiders took 7,000 slaves in the Bay of Naples in a single raid. This drove the price of slaves so low it was said you could “swap a Christian for an onion.”
After a 1566 raid on Granada in Spain netted 4,000 men women, and children, it was said to be “raining Christians in Algiers.” Women were easier to catch than men, and were prized as sex slaves, so some coastal areas lost their entire child-bearing populations. One raid as far away as Iceland brought back 400 white slaves.
Prof. Davis notes that the trade in black Africans was strictly business, but Muslims had a jihad-like enthusiasm for stealing Christians. It was revenge for the Crusades and for the reconquest of Spain from the Arabs in 1492. When Muslim corsairs raided Europe, they made a point of desecrating churches and stealing church bells. The metal was valuable but stealing church bells silenced the voice of Christianity.
It was a tradition to parade newly captured Europeans through the streets so people could jeer at them, while children threw garbage at them. At the slave market, both men and women were stripped naked to evaluate their sexual value. In the North African capitals—Tunis, Algiers, Tripoli—there was a big demand for homosexual sex-slaves. Other Europeans were worked to death on farms or building projects.
Prof. Davis writes that unlike in North America, there were no limits on cruelty: “There was no countervailing force to protect the slave from his master’s violence: no local anti-cruelty laws, no benign public opinion, and rarely any effective pressure from foreign states.” Slaves were not just property, they were infidels, and deserved whatever suffering a master meted out.
For a man, there was a fate even worse than being a sex slave. Hundreds of thousands became galley slaves, often on slave-catching pirate ships. They were chained to their oars 24 hours a day, and could move only to the hole where the oar went through the hull—so they could relieve themselves. If the men were rowing, they fouled themselves. Galley slaves lived in a horrible stench, ate rotten food, were whipped by slave drivers and tormented by rats and lice. They could not lie down and had to sleep at their oars. Many never left their ships, even in port. Their job was to row until they died, and to be tossed overboard at the first sign of weakness.
Muslims have taken slaves for as long as there have been Muslims, which is about 1,400 years.
Tumblr media
Mohammed himself was an enthusiastic slave trader. Muslims still take black slaves. As this article points out, Libya still has slave markets, Mauritanian Arabs take black slaves, and there is still slavery in Niger, Mali, Chad and Sudan[Libya’s slave markets are a reminder that the exploitation of Africans never went away, by Martin Plaut, New Statesman, February 21, 2018].
And, of course, it was white people who abolished slavery, both in their own countries and, except for a few stubborn holdouts, the whole world. Africans, just like the Tlingit Indians, screamed about all the wealth we made them give up.
But slavery’s still our “original sin.” As Time magazine wrote just this month about slavery “Europeans and their colonial “descendants” in the United States engineered the most complete and enduring dehumanization of a people in history."[Facing America's History of Racism Requires Facing the Origins of 'Race' as a Concept, by Andrew Curran, July 10, 2020]
What a small minority of Americans did for 246 years—and in a relatively mild form—is worse than anything that was ever done anywhere by anyone.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is the power of white privilege. I hope you are enjoying it. Watch this video:

Canon-compliant PoC!Arcobaleno and where they could be from
So I really want to add diversity in my stories, but if like me whenever you have too much to choose from you just can't choose anything at all, this is the post for you!
Because we got so little on the Arco, we could make them be from anywhere, you know? So I thought I'd look into the little we got on them to give me some ideas.
Note: Inspired by this post.
Note 2: Of course some countries I end up with, like, let's say France, maybe don't instantly make you think of PoC, but friendly reminder PoC exist everywhere.
A good starter in that case is to look into the country's diaspora and/or its immigration, which I didn't add in this post because it's already too long as it is lol, and it's easy to do by yourself.
Note 3: Yes we're going full fake deep, like pretending the Arco's names aren't most likely nicknames/pseudonyms, whatever.

FON |
What we know:
He’s Chinese, and the Mandarin romanization of his name is Fēng.
He’s a master of Kenpō, and knows 107 martial arts.
He has a Chinese dragon tattoo.
He’s related to Hibari, who’s Japanese.
He has a red-faced white monkey as a pet.
(Source), (Source)
What I found:
Fēng is actually a surname?? I did not know that lmao.
It’s found the most in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, the US, and Canada.
It’s a Chinese surname of Fuxi, a cultural hero in Chinese legend and mythology.
Fuxi (and his twin sister turned wife Nüwa) lived on the mythological Kunlun Mountain (today’s Huashan, a mountain located near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi Province.)
Fuxi died at a place called Chen (modern Huaiyang—a district in the prefecture-level city of Zhoukou in the east of Henan province—a landlocked province of China, in the central part of the country).

Chinese martial arts refer to several hundreds fighting styles. These fighting styles are classified according to different common trait, among which their geographical association (Northern and Southern).
Northern styles “feature deeply extended postures—such as the horse, bow, drop, and dragon stances—connected by quick fluid transitions, able to quickly change the direction in which force is issued.”
“In general, the training characteristics of northern styles put more focus on legwork, kicking and acrobatics.”
Southern styles “feature low stable stances and short powerful movements that combine both attack and defense. In practice, Nanquan focus more on the use of the arm and full body techniques than high kicks or acrobatics moves.”
(That said Fon knows 107 martial arts, so it doesn’t matter much lol.)

Though tattoos in mainstream Chinese don’t come with a strong sense of tradition as of today, it still is the case for some Chinese Ethnic Group.
Among them the Dai people, who see (men) tattoos as a sign of strength and virility. They tattoo their men as a rite of passage into adulthood around the age of 14 or 15 years old, most commonly with a ferocious beast such as a dragon or a tiger, in a way to accentuate/draw attention to their muscles.
Though of course, Chinese dragon tattoos in general and in all its variant are very common and worn both by men and women.

The red-faced white monkey (known as the bald uakari), is part of the New World monkey, which are “the five families of primates that are found in the tropical regions of Mexico, Central and South America”.
The bald uakari specifically “is restricted to wooded habitats near water in the western Amazon of Brazil and Peru”.

Half Chinese!Half Japanese!Fon, who more likely would have been born in China than in Japan.
Half Chinese!Half Mexican!Fon.
Half Chinese!Half Central or South American!Fon.

LUCE | ARIA | UNI/YUNI |
What we know:
They’re part alien so from there all bets are off lmao.
Their ancestor is named Sepira, who founded the Giglio Nero famiglia, an Italian mafia.
They’re Donne of the Giglio Nero famiglia.
Giglio Nero means “black lily” in italian.
They’re shaman/miko/seeress (all three of these words are used to describe Luce/them).
Luce has a pet squirrel.
(Source)
What I found:
If you want some consistency with the name Sepira:
Sepira is a name found in Indonesia, India, and Turkey.
The names Luce, Aria, and Uni can also be found in these countries, though Yuni appears only in Indonesia and India.
If they were Indonesian names, Sepi would mean something along the terms of quiet/dull, or lonely, or deserted. I didn’t find anything for Sepira.
Yuni could mean June, a girls’ name given to girls born in June.
Alya (yes written like that) would mean "sky, heaven, loftiness" in Arabic.
(Source), (Source), (Source), (Source)
If they were Indian names, Arya (yes written like that) means “Aryan, noble” from an old Indo-Iranian root.
Yuni could mean "Young, youthful, healthy, excellent".
Yuni could also mean "connection, union" or "young woman" in Sanskrit.

Otherwise:
The name Luce is found of course in Italy, but also France, Canada, the United States, Brazil and various countries of Africa the most.
It’s a pet-form of Lucy and its variants, like Lucia and Lucy. It means “light” in Italian.
(Source), (Source)
The name Aria is found in the United States, Brazil, Spain, Iran, and Russia the most.
It’s a Latin name that means “a solo melody”. It literally means “air” in Italian, but otherwise also means “song, melody”. It’s not actually a common name in Italy either.
It also means 'treasure' or 'gold', 'of high value' in Albanian and "Lioness" in Hebrew.
Aria is also considered a diminutive form of the Greek name Ariana/Arianna, which has the meaning “very holy”.
(Source), (Source), (Source)
The name Uni is found in the United States, Egypt, Nepal, and Papua New Guinea the most.
“People having the name Uni are in general originating from Norway.” It means in this case “a Dane”.
The origin of Uni is English and Latin. It’s a contracted form of the name Uniqua. It’s also a variant form of the English Unity.
It could mean “dream”, or be of Korean origin and mean “sea urchin”, or mean "Short for Universe, meaning area of stars".
Uni could also refer to the ancient goddess of marriage, fertility, family, and women in Etruscan (civilization of ancient Italy) religion and myth, and the patron goddess of Perugia (an Italian capital city).

Yuni is found in the United States, Venezuela, DR Congo, Saudi Arabia, and Japan the most.
It’s a girl’s Japanese name.
And that’s all I found about the name lol.

Giglio Nero together isn’t an actual Italian family name (I didn’t find anything on it anyway).
Giglio is of course an Italian surname, but can also be found in the US, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, France, and Australia the most. It means “dweller where lilies grew; dweller on the peak”, or simply “lily”.
Nero is found in Italy too, and in the US, Canada, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa, and Sweden the most. It’s from the descendant of Neri, and refers to the dark-complexioned or black haired man.
Neri “was supposedly a noble family from Tuscany who were believed to be descendants of Roman Emperor Nero.”

The range of lilies in the Old World extends across much of Europe,   across most of Asia to Japan, south to India, and east to Indochina and the Philippines.
In the New World they extend from southern Canada through much of the United States.
------
Lilies portray love, ardor, and affection for your loved ones.
They’re also the flowers most commonly used at funerals, where they symbolically signify that the soul of the deceased has been restored to the state of innocence.
They also have been associated with the Virgin Mary since at least the Medieval Era.
In heraldry, it’s associated primarily with French royalty.
------
Orange lilies are widely distributed in much of Europe from Spain to Finland and Ukraine, and grow in mountain meadows and on hillsides.
They stand for happiness, love, and warmth.
In culture, the orange lily has long been recognized as a symbol of the Orange Order (an international Protestant fraternal order) in Northern Ireland.
It also has lodges in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, as well as throughout the British Commonwealth (a political association of 54 member states, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.) and the United States.
(I always thought their tattoo was an orange lily for some reason lol, so I looked into it.)

Black calla  are native to the Levant and other parts of the Mediterranean Basin, but have pretty much been naturalized everywhere else lol.
They’re perhaps best known for itheir long history in the Middle East as food and for it use in traditional Middle Eastern medicine, for example among Arabs in Palestine.

Shamanism is a religious practice where the shaman interacts with spirits through various state of consciousness.
Etymologically speaking, it originated from indigenous people in Eastern Siberia.
It’s a system of religious practice often associated with indigenous and tribal societies.
The term quickly devolved to be used as an umbrella term, that refers to unrelated magico-religious practices found in various ethnic religions across the world. (Which might be why we also got the term “Miko” and "Seeress”.)
Note also that the term is subject to critics, namely involving the notion of cultural appropriation.

Shamanism across the world.
(Source)
In Shinto (a religion originated in Japan), a Miko is a shrine maiden or supplementary priestess once likely seen as a shaman.
They once performed spirits possession, whereby they were the medium through which a god or spirit communicated their message. That communication could also happen during their dreams.
Though working in shrines originally, they started working independently in secular societies.
Besides communicating with the divine, they “performed a variety of religious and political functions".
“The position of a shaman passed from generation to generation, but sometimes someone not directly descended from a shaman went voluntary into training or was appointed by the village chieftains.”
Today Miko “are understood in modern Japanese culture to be an institutionalized role in daily shrine life, trained to perform tasks, ranging from sacred cleansing to performing the sacred Kagura dance.”

Seeress in German religion and mythology is a woman said to have the ability to foretell future occurrences.
The term is also tied to divination, a practice widespread across the world and religions, and namely to oracles, who practice a form of divination.
Amano could also have used seeress in place of prophetess, “an individual who is regarded as being in contact with a divine being and is said to speak on behalf of that being”.
“Claims of prophethood have [also] existed in many cultures throughout history.”
I didn’t look further into the terms because of how many things it can mean lol, but you can click on my sources if you want to read more on the subject.

So, I have of course no way to know what species Luce’s squirrel is, but if you look at her colored art works, it could be a red squirrel. So I looked into them.
The Eurasian red squirrel is common throughout Eurasia. “Their range extends from the UK, Ireland, and Western Europe to Russia, Mongolia, and northwest China.”
As of today their numbers decreased in Great Britain, Ireland and Italy because of the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel, but stabilized in Scotland due to conservation efforts.
The American red squirrel is widely distributed across North America, except on the Pacific coast.
It’s also “not found on most of the Great Plains or in the southeastern United States, as conifer trees are not common in those areas."

What we end up with:
I threw a lot of countries around, so have fun with that if you want lol.
If you want to include Sepira, it looks like the Donne would have Indonesian/Indian(/Turkish) roots.
Otherwise Italian! or Japanese! (or both) Donne could pretty much be canon.
Personally I really like the idea of French!Sky Arco or from Western Asia/Mediterranean Basin!Sky Arco.
Indigenous!Sky Arco is also a possibility.

REBORN |
What we know:
He goes by the name Reborn.
He wears a fedora (I know this is utterly random zdsfgh, but it feels to me like a particular  enough piece of fashion to try to look into it).
His usual gun is the CZ75 1ST.
He has a pet chameleon.

Fedora hats first appeared in France in 1882 as a female hat, and only became a male hat after 1924 thanks to Prince Edward of Britain wearing it.
They were adopted by Orthodox Jews beginning 20th century, who still wear them today as part of their daily wear.
Fedora hats are also often associated with Prohibition and gangsters because of the height of their popularity and many classics noir films who popularized them.
(I equally both love Jewish!Reborn, and Reborn just being one huge fanboy and trying to look more like his mafia idols aefhjku.)
Also fun fact, fedora hats are apparently a very iconic piece of fashion that refuse to go out of style. I’m saying this because there’s sometimes this running gag in fics of mocking Reborn’s fedora, when he’s in fact just being very stylish lol.

Chameleons live in warm habitats that range from rain forest to desert conditions, with various species occurring in Africa, Madagascar, southern Europe, and across southern Asia as far as Sri Lanka.
They also have been introduced to Hawaii, California, and Florida, and often are kept as household pets.
Although nearly half of all chameleon species today live in Madagascar, it has recently been shown that chameleons most likely originated in mainland Africa.
(Source)
Also fun fact and totally unrelated, but you know how the KHR Wiki says Reborn’s a member of the Italian bird society? Well, bird societies are an actual thing people can be part of.
What we end up with:
Italian!Reborn, though it’s actually never said in canon lol, but I think we can all agree on this one.
Otherwise French! or British! or Czech! (and in general European!) Reborn sounds really fun.
But personally I love most African!Reborn, like omg, I need to write about him.

VERDE |
What we know:
He goes by the name Verde.
He’s said to be Da Vinci’s reincarnation.
He was/is a member of Geppetto Lorenzini’s secret scientist society.
He has a pet alligator called Cayman.
(Source), (Source)
What I found:
The name Verde is most found in Italy, Turkey, the US, Congo, Nigeria, Brazil, and Cameroon.
Verde is also most commonly a girl’s name, that could refer to Vindis (or Verde) Visconti, an Italian noblewoman, Duchess and Countess consort.
------
In Italian etymology, it means green, or pale, or unripe. It can also mean verdure, greenery, or (heraldry) vert (green in french).
In Spanish etymology, it means green, the color, when used with the verb ser, while the verb estar is used with figurative meanings, like inexperienced, naive; or risqué, naughty; or dirty, coarse; or unwell, sick; or green, as in eco-friendly.
In Galician (Spain) and Portuguese etymology, it means green, the color, or green, as in unripe. It’s derived from Cabo Verde, an archipelago and country in Africa, or a municipality of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
------
In English etymology, it’s based on the geography of Cape Verde. And according to the 2010 United States Census, Verde is most commonly a surname, most common among Hispanic/Latino and White individuals.
In Esperento (the world's most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language) etymology, it means green, greenly.
In Romanian etymology, it means green, or (slang) marijuana.
In Dutch etymology, it’s an obsolete form of verre (glass in french).
In Corsican (a french island) etymology, it means green, the color, or refers to the mineral smaragdite.
(Source), (Source), (Source)
As a surname, Verde is most found in Italy, Spain, Philippines, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, the US, Brazil, and Argentina.
It could also be short for Valverde, a Spanish surname.

(I know we all know who Leonardo Da Vinci is lol, but for the sake of this post I’m gonna spell it out anyway.)
Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian polymath (an individual whose knowledge spans a substantial number of subjects), born in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci, in Florence.
He’s considered one of the greatest painters of all time, and revered for his technological ingenuity,
He also became known for his knowledge on various subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting, and paleontology (the scientific study of life that existed prior to, and sometimes including, the start of the Holocene Epoch).

Geppetto Lorenzini is a purely fictional character, whose name is inspired  from the famous fairy tale The Adventures of Pinocchio‘s character, Mister Geppetto, and Carlo Lorenzini, the Italian author of the novel.
I didn’t found anything on any secret scientist society that could fit, but fun fact, secret societies are banned in Italy and are anti-constitutional.

Cayman's name references caiman, one of the two primary crocodilian alligatorid subfamilies.
Caimans inhabit Mexico, Central and northern South America from marshes and swamps to mangrove rivers and lakes.
They are relatively small-sized crocodilians, with the smallest species being the Cuvier's dwarf caiman.
------
Cuvier's dwarf caiman is a small crocodilian in the alligator family native to northern and central South America.
It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French, Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad, and Venezuela.
It lives in riverine forests, flooded forests near lakes, and near fast-flowing rivers and streams, and is present in the drainages of the Orinoco River, the São Francisco River, and the Amazon River, and the upper reaches of the Paraná River and the Paraguay River.
The range of this species is rather larger than that of the sympatric smooth-fronted caiman, as it extends into Paraguay and includes a larger area of Brazil.
It is sometimes kept in captivity as a pet and may be referred to as the wedge-head caiman by the pet trade.

LAL MIRCH |
What we know:
She goes by the name Lal Mirch (लाल मिर्च), which is the Hindi name for chili pepper, or Capsicum annuum.
She’s a former member of COMSUBIN.
(And I think that’s it?? Damn.)
(Source)
What I found:
Lal Mirch is the Hindi name for red chilli pepper, used to spice meals and give them a red color; and very common in Indian cuisine. It’s possibly also written as Laal Mirch.
Chilli peppers originated in Mexico. They were one of the first self-pollinating crops cultivated in Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America.
After the Columbian Exchange they spread across the world, and are used for both food and traditional medicine. This resulted into variety of varieties and cultivars, and those grown in North America and Europe are believed to all derive from Capsicum annuum, and have white, yellow, red or purple to black fruits.
Capsicum annuum is a species of the plant genus Capsicum native to southern North America and northern South America.
Hot peppers are used in traditional medicine as well as food in Africa.
They’re also used in Ayurveda, an alternative medicine system with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent.
(Source), (Source), (Source), (Source)
The name Lal is most commonly a boys’ name, and found the most in Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran; as well as in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, England, Canada, and the US.
It’s an Indo-Iranian surname and given name, which means 'darling', 'precious', or 'beloved', from the Sanskrit lala ('cajoling').
It also means 'garnet' or 'ruby' in Persian, 'ruby' in Pashto, and 'red' in Hindustani and Bengali.
Lal can also mean "boy" in Hindi, derived from Sanskrit लल (lala) meaning "playing, caressing".
------
As a surname it’s related to the honorific title Lal, and is found among various social groups and castes. The surname is also common in the Indian diaspora.
Also as a surname, Lal is a term of endearment for a child in several modern Indian languages, and is also an epithet of the god Krishna.
It occurs more commonly as the final element of a compound personal name, as in Brajlal (Braj being the name of the place where the god Krishna is supposed to have lived as a child) and Motilal (Hindi moti ‘pearl’).

The existing ships and shore facilities have undergone major refits to accommodate women.”

COLONNELLO |
What we know:
He goes by the name Colonnello, which is italian for “colonel”.
He was part of COMSUBIN.
He has a pet hawk.
(Source)
What I found:
The name Colonnello is found only in Italy and the US.
It might come from the American forename Colonel, given to children as an attempt by parents to give their child a higher status.
Colonel is also an American surname (from occupation), from a French word for a military rank of an officer who led a column of regimental soldiers.
It could also be a nickname for someone with a military bearing or demeanor.
------
As a surname Colonnello is found the most in Italy, the US, Argentina, France, South Africa, Canada, and in Venezuela.
Colonel is a senior military officer rank used in many countries. Modern usage varies greatly, and in some cases, the term is used as an honorific title that may have no direct relationship to military service.
Though it was presumably first used by Italian city states, the first use of colonel as a rank in a national army was in the French National Legions (Légions nationales).

Hawks are a group of medium-sized diurnal birds of prey. They’re widely distributed and vary greatly in size.
Hawks usually like to live in places like deserts and fields, likely as it is easier to find prey. As they are able to live anywhere, they can be found in mountainous plains and tropical, moist areas.
------
Symbolically speaking, hawks represents knowledge and wisdom thanks to the preservation skills they’ve developed.
In Europe and thanks to Germanic traditions and symbolism, hawks are associated with war. It surrounds the image of the hawk, as a sign of strength and courage.
Thanks to their acute vision and how fast they move, a hawk is also a metaphor of being a visionary, and of seeing things that other people can’t see.
------
As I understand it, depending on the species and countries, birds of prey, including hawks, aren’t always legal to have as a pet. (But I unfortunately couldn’t find a convenient list of this.)
In the US for example, you can’t have any native North American bird (including hawk) as a pet, or even have a single feather unless you are a Native American, as they’re covered by federal law, with the only exceptions being licensed falconers.
Also apparently hawks are one hell of a pet to have, that are extremely demanding and inconvenient lol.
(Source), (Source), (Source) (The answer by Mercedes R. Lackey, who explains how hard it is to have a pet hawk if you’re interested.)
Not listed in the “What we know” section, but according to TV Tropes Colonnello’s appearance might be a case of the Phenotype Stereotype trope.
It’s when an individual is made to display all the stereotypical features of their ethnicity as a shortcut to show where they’re from.
“In Japan, the stereotype of someone from the U.S. is usually a blond and blue-eyed person. Because of this, if foreign characters in anime are white, in most cases they will be blond, blue-eyed and tall Americans unless there's a plot reason for them to be from another country or have another look.”
(The trope’s page explains it in more details if you’re curious about it.)

SKULL |
What we know:
He goes by the name Skull.
(Whelp, that’s it azsdfgh.)
(Source)
What I found:
The name Skull is found the most in Russia, the US, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal, Egypt, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, and in Australia.
------
As a surname Skull is found the most in England, the US, Canada, Australia, India, Italy, Cambodia, South Africa, and in Brazil.
It’s derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Scowle'. It can also fetch its name from Old Norse skule, signifying a protector.
Skull can also derive from the Middle English "sc(h)ulle", skull, a term thought to be of Scandinavian origin, and used here as a nickname for someone who was thought to have a cadaverous appearance, or for a bald-headed man.
It can also be spelled Scull, Scule, Skule, etc.
(Source), (Source), (Source)
Not listed in the “What we know’” section, but just for the fun of it I thought I might as well look into skull symbolism.
The most common symbolic use of the skull is as a representation of death, mortality and the unachievable nature of immortality.
As in most depiction of Death a skeleton is used, skulls also symbolize divine wisdom and general intelligence.
This comes from the fact a lot of cultures across the world consider Death as a deity with the ability to know one’s death, and imply that they are knowledgeable about one’s passing from life to death and what that is like.
Skulls also have the dual symbolism of warning and protection, for example when they decorate the palisade of a city and such.
In the spiritual realm, a skull can help you keep away from things that can cause you peril.
------
Skulls’ symbolism as a celebration of life is known mostly as part of Mexican culture, where the living celebrates those who lived before them on the Day of the Dead or Día de Los Muertos.
In India, skulls played a particularly important role in religious depictions, and often adorn ancient gods and goddess. To the Hindu, this is a natural progression of life; life and death are to be embraced – not resisted.
In Buddhism, skulls are generally depicted as a necklace around a deity. They represent emptiness, the concept that what we experience has no inherent nature by itself, and instead we give meaning to them ourselves.
In Celtic traditions, they viewed the head or skull to be the seat of power. Some texts point to the skull as the house of the soul.
------
When tattooed on the forearm its apotropaic (a type of magic intended to turn away harm or evil influences, as in deflecting misfortune or averting the evil eye) power can for example help an outlaw biker cheat death.
On a pirate’s ship’s flag, it symbolizes the pirates' ruthlessness and despair. Their usage of death imagery might also be paralleled with their occupation challenging the natural order of things.

The name Viper is most found in Russia, DR Congo, the US, Kazakhstan, India, and in Philippines.
------
As a surname Viper is most found in Egypt, Russia, India, the US, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Sweden, and in Belarus.
It may be a corruption of Vibert, the Wibert of the Yorkshire Domesday, and the Anglo-Saxon name Uibert.
Its usage is Arabic (Egyptian).
It could be of English origin, and means "Gift of god".
------
Vipers are a subfamily of vipers endemic to Europe, Asia and Africa, but not in Madagascar. Like all vipers, they are venomous.
In French language, it can also mean “a dangerous, treacherous, or malignant person”.
(Source), (Source), (Source), (Source), (Source)
The name Mammon is found the most in Saudi Arabia, India, Sudan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and in Russia.
It means riches, and could be the name of a Syrian god, or wealth (as trusted in).
In its Biblical, Judeo-Christian Legend, it also means "wealth, riches". In the New Testament, this was material wealth or greed, which was often personified as a deity.
------
As a surname Mammon is found the most in the US, Canada, Nigeria, South Africa, England, Belgium, Estonia, and in Pakistan the most.
In the New Testament of the Bible, it’s commonly thought to mean money, material wealth, or any entity that promises wealth, and is associated with the greedy pursuit of gain.
During the Middle Ages, Mammon was commonly personified as the demon of wealth and greed.
------
Mammon in Hebrew (ממון) means "money". The word was adopted to modern Hebrew to mean wealth.
"Mamona" (sometimes "Mamuna") is a synonym for mammon among Slavs.
The word "mammona" is quite often used in the Finnish and Estonian languages as a synonym of material wealth.
In German, the word "Mammon" is a colloquial and contemptuous term for "money".
(Source), (Source), (Source), (Source)
The ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail.
It was adopted as a symbol in Gnosticism (collection of religious ideas and systems among Jewish and early Christian sects), Hermeticism (a philosophical system that is primarily based on the purported teachings of Hermes Trismegistus), and most notably in alchemy (an ancient branch of natural philosophy, a philosophical and protoscientific tradition).
It’s often interpreted as a symbol for eternal cyclic renewal or a cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
In ancient Egypt, it represents the beginning and the end of time, and the cyclical nature of the year.
In Gnosticism, a serpent biting its tail symbolized eternity and the soul of the world, and it may perhaps represent a Gnostic duality of existence.
(Source)
So obviously there isn’t a real life animal that is both frog and snake lol, but the fact the snake takes the form of an ouroboros might refer to the armadillo lizard otherwise known as an Ouroborus cataphractus.
It takes this other name from its defensive posture: curling into a ball and holding its own tail in its mouth.
It’s a species of lizard, endemic to desert areas along the western coast of South Africa, namely to the Succulent Karoo biome in the Northern and the Western Cape provinces, where it occurs from the southern Richtersveld to the Piketberg Mountains and the southern Tankwa Karoo.

The name Jack is found the most in the US, Canada, England, Central African Republic, Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Netherlands, China, Papua New Guinea, and in Australia.
It’s a male name, and the commonest pet-name for John, though it is sometimes bestowed independently.
In its English usage, it’s a medieval diminutive of John, and could have some early influence from the unrelated French name Jacques. During the Middle Ages it became a slang word meaning "man", and It was frequently used in fairy tales and nursery rhymes.
It can also be used as a diminutive for: Jacob, Jason, Jonathan, Jan, Johann, Johannes, Joachim, from its French form Jacques, from the Latin Jacobus.
There is also a theory that it is Celtic in origin, meaning "healthy, strong, full of vital energy" (compare the Welsh word iach, "health"), from a putative Ancient British Yakkios.

Holy shit I finished it. I love you so much if you made it until here omg azsfdghj, thank you so much for reading!!
I had this in my drafts since 5 months ago, but also I procrastinated over it a lot lmao, so it’s not really surprising.
Anyway if you guys have names but no countries (or cities, because you can narrow it down to cities too), I really can’t recommend the site forebears enough.
It’s literally so useful, and comes in other languages than English, and gives you the meaning of the names if they have it!
Also you’re more than welcome to add to this post, and if I spread misinformation and/or was insensitive/offensive at any point, please let me know about it.

[image description: a proof of a font of handset type for letterpress printing, displaying every letter, symbol, and special character in the font. it's called "Sixteenth Century Roman," 24 pt., and is a rough-edged serif font with a deliberately worn look. end description.]
hello hello i am return from a deep dive into several reference materials that assumed a little bit more knowledge about how Medieval Latin works than i actually have, but, it was all exTREMEly inch resting to me. i am absolutely not a historian but here we are, a speedrun of my pinballing around trying to ensure that I know what the fuck im storing in my type corridor:
so 16th Cent. Roman, i already knew, was a font Paul Duensing designed based on this incomplete set of old Italian punches he acquired (punches, the first step of old school typecasting, where you carve the relief letter shape into the end of a stick of steel, and you uuuh punch that into the copper matrix, which is then the negative mould-shape you use to cast multiple copies of the lead sorts with hot metal; surviving punches are precious artifacts not the least because they are. they’re hand-carved!! often by the type designer themselves. historical and also wildly cool craftsmanship). these punches were all beat up and probably water damaged, fucky and rough-edged, so he re-did and filled in the gaps in the alphabet with similarly styled letters of his own. very cool. an extremely nerdy lil passion project of a typecaster in the 1960s, very typical of type people. we all find a Thing to obsess over, and sometimes it's reviving an incomplete set of punches from the 1500s that you found in, idk, it's usually a bucket in somebody's basement.
anyway it's got a bunch of ligatures and the long s, sure sure sure, but WHAT are all these gibberish characters with tildas and lines thru the stems of ps and qs and such—
Duensing's full font is in Mac McGrew's specimen book, great, i have that, except McGrew's book has complete proofs and a little bit of history for each font but doesn't always cover what each symbol in a unique alphabet is for, and i knew just enough about Latin to guess that they were abbreviations but not what each of them stood for. a little bit of searching got me this far, which is to say, "Abbreviation in Medieval Latin Paleography," a translation of an Italian essay on the subject from 1929. It is prefaced by the translators with gems like: "Take a foreign language, write it in an unfamiliar script, abbreviating every third word, and you have the compound puzzle that is the medieval Latin manuscript." Scribes writing in medieval Latin just tossed out letters they didn't care to deal with, constantly, and had stand-in special characters and abbreviations for syllables/words/particles and there were intuitive rules but way too many variations in time and place and person to make a reasonably-sized, static lexicon. amazing. hope all u paleographers are having fun over there.
the essay has a great big glossary of truncations and abbreviations and so on which clearly cover most of the figures in Duensing's font:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image description: screenshots of the essay, with various symbols and the Latin syllables they abbreviated. an m with a bar over it, ex., stood in for men or mun. end description.]
ok! BUT this q with a little swoop off the end kept bugging me!! for all these dead-use symbols this essay is using handwritten samples, obviously, and there's clearly variation in execution and also typographers take liberties, and i just thought, sure my piece of type looks a lot like the quod here but it does link the staff to the swoop where the handwritten sample doesn't, and it could just as well be a fanciful ligature for qn which apparently can stand in for quando, and i have no idea which is a more common-use syllable likely to be cast in the font if you're only going to pick your top 14, and i just like to be sure about things.
SO. i went to double-check with Johnson’s Typographia. Johnson made like a thousand pages of printing manuals set in tiny tiny type in the 1820s which are rad as hell and tell you all sorts of things about how to run a shop and build your own press and cast type and going rates for work and employment and also, the alphabets/type case layout for whatever language or symbol set you might have to set type in, when handsetting type was mostly the only way to get stuff printed—English, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, musical notation, astronomical signs, aaaand it’s got a section for "Marks & characters used in the Domesday Book & other ancient records.”
Tumblr media
[image description: a photo of a page of the manual, with similar but not always identical symbols for abbreviated use. many of these abbreviations are described as "a Domesday contraction." end description.]
and WHAT is a Domesday contraction, WELL, it's a contraction specifically from/prevalent in the Domesday book, a deeply boring and historically important tome about property distribution in England. It’s literally a survey. who owned what, in 1086. presumably mind-numbing. enormous, handwritten in Medieval Latin, EXTREMELY cool, go look at some images of it at least, very important to historians, economists, linguists, and a complete pain in the ass to set in type when that technology became available, having to cast any significant proportion of these variant characters in an alphabet. Johnson says, (in 1824) “It is an improvement of latter years only*, to have type cast to resemble the abbreviations used in the more ancient manuscripts; they being formerly rudely imitated, either from a common fount, or else were cut in wood for the purposes of any particular work.” wow that sucks. but in 1773 the government really wanted to be able to reproduce the Domesday Book in type, so a couple people tried to cut a set of punches for Domesday abbreviations and Joseph Jackson got it done and it only took 10 years to print an edited version of the manuscript. and then apparently all the type was destroyed in a fire in 1808. WOW that sucks.
but the point is, Johnson has a great big glossary of characters as they were translated into type in the making of the printed Domesday Book, and the Domesday punches were used or refrenced in the printing of other medieval latin works, which consequences a degree of standardization in the abbreviations used in those versions of the text that handwritten manuscripts never had or needed.
notably the Domesday quod looks even more different from my piece of type here which was pretty annoying, so what are the chances this thing is a quando, and anyway that's when my sister texted me back with better computer skills and a different search engine and found me a perfect match on the first try. it’s a quod. this National Diet Library digital exhibition has several different sample fonts, both black letter and roman, with quite consistent letter forms, if not choices about which abbreviations to bother casting.
*I don’t……exactly know what he means by this, since Gutenberg and contemporaries absolutely did cast many Medieval Latin abbreviations for their fonts nearly 400 years before this. His dismissal of “from a common fount” might be fair, since i think what he means by it is that you’d have a generic set of abbreviation characters which you would have to use in conjunction with whatever font was the main body of your text, and it’s messy to mix things that weren’t designed specifically to match. he may just mean that it’s new for his contemporary foundries to be casting all these expanded alphabets of abbreviations; Gutenberg didn’t have foundries to buy from and made his own type. he could include as many characters as he had the patience for. maybe Johnson is just a guy from the 1800s that didn’t have the internet and i shouldn’t jump down his throat for not knowing something. idk!! i have homework.
anyway that was my Friday!! feel free to correct me and/or suggest further reading if early typecasting is your Thing or. again. you just have better googling than me.

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru Chapter 8 - Winter Comes Again (Part 4)
Full list of translations here
Translation Notes
1. Nakasendo is one of the five routes of the Edo period that connected Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto
Previous | Next
The Ageo City Half Marathon was held in the middle of November, just when everyone was beginning to put on their thick coats.
At the Ageo Sports Park track and field stadium, the university athletes that had been invited arrived in succession in microbuses. The members of Chikusei-sou arrived in Ageo City in their usual white van. This time, the landlord, who had been recovering at home from his stomach ulcer, accompanied them. As usual, he didn’t want to get into a car Kiyose was driving, so Hanako took out Yaokatsu’s pickup truck.
The stadium looked like a Roman colosseum from the outside. Plastic sheets were laid out along the road, securing places for each school to change clothes or rest.
There were food stalls set up in the sports park, creating a festive mood, and the area around the park was crowded with spectators and participants.
The landlord gave instructions while munching on the takoyaki he had immediately purchased.
“Today, our goal is to get used to the atmosphere of a road race, so you don’t need to focus on speed. Just run as fast as you can without forcing yourself.”
At that, the landlord glanced at Kiyose. Kiyose nodded as though to say, Exactly. Kakeru guessed what was going on: the landlord had simply given Kakeru and the others Kiyose’s instructions. Kiyose seemed to have decided to take a step back because of the friction among the residents of Chikusei-sou.
However, the twins did come with them to Ageo, as it seemed that the soccer team was able to find substitute members. Although they had rebelled against Kiyose, they didn’t break or renege on their promise, which was just like the cheerful and honest twins.
The half marathon started at 9 AM in the stadium. There were about 350 invited runners alone. Adding the citizen runners to that number, it would take time to cross the starting line even when the signal gun sounded.
At the starting line, even though he was only wearing the uniform tank top and shorts, there were so many people crowded together—in order of their numbers—that Kakeru didn’t feel the cold. In front of him there was a group from TSU; Kakeru stared at the back of Sakaki’s head for a while, but of course he couldn’t see Sakaki’s two hair whorls from his position.
Kiyose was teaching Prince about positioning and things to look out for when starting.
“Don’t get pushed from behind and fall. You don’t need to rush forward, so just get behind the runners whose pace you can match and use them as a windbreak. In your case, you don’t need to think about putting on spurts—just get into it so you don’t drop out of the group.”
Prince nodded meekly. Maybe Haiji-san is planning to enter Prince-san in the first leg of Hakone, Kakeru thought. In the first leg, of course, the first runners of the participating twenty teams would start all at once in Otemachi. At first, they would be in a cluster, so runners who weren’t timid and could compete with others while keeping an eye on the pace around them would be suited for it.
Prince-san’s time is definitely not fast compared to the level of the runners in Hakone. I wonder if it would really be effective to put him in the first leg.
As Kakeru pondered, the group finally started to move forward. By the time they had run halfway around the track and exited out onto the road, the group broke up and it became easier to run.
A quiet shopping street along Old Nakasendo. (1) The flow of the river and the green of the golf course. The skies had cleared, and the winter wind felt refreshing on his skin as it warmed up.
It felt good to run on a road that was closed to traffic. Kakeru soon got into a rhythm and simply moved his legs along. People from the houses along the street came to their doors to cheer them on and children playing in small parks eagerly chased after them.
Water was provided at three locations. Paper cups were lined up on a long table and volunteers tried to hand them out. They weren’t used to it, so it was difficult to take them; the runners were sprinting at a speed faster than bicycles. Kakeru got as close as he could to the sidewalk, but the impact of receiving the cup caused most of the contents to spill out.
Even so, the little water that remained was cool and refreshing.
Right before the turning point, he and Sakaki passed by each other. Sakaki looked at him, but Kakeru pretended not to notice. As his coach, the landlord—and by extension Kiyose—wanted him to not force himself. He didn’t think he could get along with Sakaki in any way, so he decided to leave him alone.
Kakeru watched the Rikudou runners carefully. They had good forms, as expected, but they all looked like second-string runners. Kakeru went to ask a Rikudou runner who looked like a first year and was turning at almost the same time.
“Where’s Fujioka-san?”
The first-year seemed surprised to be spoken to out of the blue, but he seemed to know Kakeru’s name and face. “The regulars are at a high-altitude training camp in Kunming,” he said.
“Kunming?”
“In China.”
“Wow.”
As expected, Rikudou’s scale is different, Kakeru thought, surprised. He wondered if he would get diarrhea if he went to China. But Fujioka, who was a demon when it came to looking after his own health and discipline, would probably never make a gaffe like that.
The first-year runner ran ahead. Feeling like humming a tune, Kakeru maintained his pace of one kilometer per 3 minutes and 3 seconds. Fujioka would be getting stronger and stronger at the Chinese training camp. Kakeru wanted to meet him at Hakone. We’ll make it clear on the big stage who’s faster.
They returned to the stadium and reached the finish line. Kansei’s pace was moderate, so their rankings were not that good. However, they were able to grasp the atmosphere of a road race. Even Prince, who had the slowest time among the ten of them, had a satisfied look on his face after he finished running; he must have gained confidence that he could run a distance that was almost the same as Hakone’s first leg without difficulty. Kiyose’s plan to have the members who lacked experience join a half marathon seemed to have worked.
The organizers provided lunch boxes and bananas to the invited schools. Musa and Shindou went to the management tent to go get them and returned with a cardboard box full of bananas.
“There’s so many.”
Jouta and Jouji peered into the box. Hanako looked at the stickers on the bananas.
“These are good bananas,” she evaluated like a grocer’s daughter.
Bananas were useful after a workout because they provide a quick calorie intake. They swiftly peeled them and when everyone was on their second or third, a visitor approached them.
He was a man in his late thirties, dressed in the same casual clothing as the spectators.
“You’re Kansei University’s track team, right?” the man said.
“Yeff we arr,” Jouji mumbled as he stuffed his third banana in his mouth. “Why?”
“Is Kurahara-kun here?” the man asked, but his gaze was fixed on Kakeru. He seemed to have already recognized Kakeru’s face. “I just want to ask you a few questions.”
Kakeru stood and took the business card the man held out to him. “Shinjitsu Weekly    Mochizuki Shuuji” was written on it.
Most of the people present probably thought that a reporter had come to interview him about catching the shoplifters, but Kakeru knew better. This man got wind of my past.
“You graduated from Sendai Jousai High School, correct?” Mochizuki began. Out of the corner of his eye, Kakeru saw Kiyose immediately stand, his face quickly changing color.
“Yes,” Kakeru answered.
“You caught a bunch of shoplifters the other day, didn’t you? I saw it in the papers.” Mochizuki raised his eyebrows in an exaggerated manner, as though he was impressed. “A sportsman among sportsmen with an overflowing sense of justice—you’ve become a hot topic even in your hometown. Especially around the track team at Sendai Jousai.”
Kiyose came to Kakeru’s side and faced Mochizuki.
“Please don’t interview our runners without permission.”
“This won’t take long,” Mochizuki laughed thoughtlessly. However, there was a sharp light in his eyes. “Kurahara-kun, you competed at the Inter-High in your second year at high school and achieved good results. However, you quit the team as soon as you became a third-year. Why is that?”
“Hey!”
Kiyose was indignant, but Kakeru stopped him, saying, “It’s fine, Haiji-san.” He couldn’t run away or hide it. As long as he continued to do track, this matter would always follow him. He had been prepared for this the moment he decided to go to Hakone with the residents of Chikusei-sou.
“You’ve already looked into it, haven’t you?” Kakeru said. “I hit my coach.”
“I heard that you broke your coach’s nose. Furthermore, you rejected the university that gave you a tentative offer for track, and you quit your team, in spite of the fact that the coach had tried to keep the incident private because he was afraid that it would become a public scandal.” Mochizuki peered into Kakeru’s expression. “What were you so unhappy about? What kind of disagreement did you have with your coach?”
Kakeru kept silent. His high school coach was famous for his thorough management of his runners and his spartan training methods. Of course, there was no doubt that he was a competent coach with a good track method to match.
However, ever since Kakeru had first enrolled in high school, he was unable to get along with his coach, and he disliked how he only talked about times.
That was why, when he had witnessed the coach cursing out a first-year who was having trouble recovering after an injury in the club room, he got angry. That first-year was on a sports scholarship, and if he was forced to quit the team, that would make it hard for him to stay in school. Kakeru could only think that the coach knew that the student was in a vulnerable position and was simply tormenting him.
That might be something he thought of in hindsight, but really the first-year had just been a trigger for Kakeru; a good detonator for releasing his pent-up resentment. Because the moment he hit the coach, the only thought in Kakeru’s head was I can end it with this.
There hadn't been a single shred of heroism in the act. He hadn't been doing it for the first-year, and he hadn’t even thought about how ashamed that first-year would feel in the club if his senpai hit the coach because of him. There was no sense of justice or compassion, just violence for the sake of his own satisfaction and pleasure—just to dispel his pent-up frustration and anger towards the coach. Kakeru had felt the cartilage in his nose break through his fist and felt refreshed.
“Committing an act of violence on a high school team, and it was at a prestigious track and field school. Since the story got leaked and you didn’t deny it, the Sendai Jousai High School track and field team voluntarily suspended its activities for a while. I’m sure there are a lot of people who didn’t think well of you at that time; not only the coach who was punched by you, but also your teammates who couldn’t participate in meets.”
“What do you want to ask Kurahara?” Kiyose cut in. “Even if what you said is true, I think what you should question instead is the school's position in not rocking the boat, as well as the results-oriented mentality that is rampant in some parts of the high school track world, where runners are managed with excessive restraint and interference which can crush growing talent.”
“Are you Kansei’s captain?” Mochizuki turned his gaze to Kiyose like he was appraising him. “Did you know Kurahara-kun committed an act of violence? What do you think of him?”
“He’s a runner with talent. But before that, for us, he’s a comrade who’s reliable as a person.”
Kakeru’s heart shook at the word “comrade.” It was as though he were in the middle of a happy dream when he was suddenly grabbed by the shoulders and woken up; the feeling of floating, like he was still in a dream, and the disappointment of returning to reality, and then the relief of opening your eyes to see the face of someone close to you. So many emotions welled up within him that he recoiled, not knowing how to take them in.
Unaware of the slightly shaken Kakeru, Kiyose stood his ground against Mochizuki.
“Please leave. I would like you to have your interview request approved with our PR department.”
PR department? A murmur spread through the residents of Chikusei-sou, who had been watching the proceedings from behind. Shindou and Hanako raised their hands.
“Yes.”
“That’s us.”
“We refuse your request for an interview,” Shindou said. “Exactly, exactly,” King nodded. The landlord didn’t say anything and ate his lunch. It was hard to tell from his detached and casual attitude if he was troubled or amused by the situation.
“Good grief, these bananas taste awful,” Nico-chan said, and Mochizuki gave a forced laugh as he was given a reproachful look.
“Then, one last thing. Kurahara-kun, you’re going to run in Hakone, right? Do you have anything to say to your high school coach? Anything is fine, even if it’s something like ‘Serves you right.’”
“I have nothing to say.” Kakeru quietly shook his head. He didn’t want to apologize, but he also didn’t want to boast that “Even without your help, anyone can survive in the track world if they have the ability.”
“I regret it. I regret that I couldn’t think of any other way other than knocking him down at that time. That’s all.”
The following week in Shinjitsu Weekly, there was a double-page spread with the headline “Disaster in the High School Sports World!?” With a provoking line of “What’s behind the frequent scandals…”, the article mentioned old troubles at the Sendai Jousai High School track and field team along with Koshien regulars and high school soccer powerhouses.
“The other day, K-kun was in the news for catching shoplifters. He is a runner with a promising future who will take part in next January’s Hakone Ekiden, but there are also rumors that K-kun caused a violent incident in the past. The coach of the track and field team at Sendai J High School stated, ‘That incident has already passed,’ and meaningfully closed his mouth, but…” It went on after that, and even if you didn’t know anything about track, it was easy to guess that it was talking about Kansei’s Kurahara Kakeru.
“This was clearly leaked by that coach.” Jouji threw down the magazine, annoyed.
“Don’t worry about it,” Musa said, anxious about Kakeru.
Kiyose and Shindou were busy explaining the situation to the university and the supporter’s group and dealing with them. Apparently the landlord was also going around and bowing his head, saying, “Sorry for the trouble.” When Kakeru learned about this and apologized, he proudly said, “Well of course, I’m the coach.” He didn’t say anything that blamed him.
Kiyose persisted in his stance of protecting Kakeru, so the area around Chikusei-sou remained calm. The repercussions of the article would probably die down, but it didn’t change the fact that he had caused trouble.
The residents of Chikusei-sou treated Kakeru the way they always had. In order to meet those expectations, he had to run well in Hakone. Kakeru continued to run silently.

“What,” Virgil says when Janus stumbles into his tiny apartment at two in the morning, brushing snow from his clothes and hat, “the hell were you thinking?!”
“Well, mostly about you, darling,” he replies, fighting and failing to hide a shiver as he removes his soaked coat. “You weren’t exaggerating about how cold it was in here, hm?”
Virgil, wearing at least three sweaters, a scarf around his neck, a beanie pulled tight over his hair and ears, and the soft Nightmare Before Christmas blanket Roman had given him two birthdays ago, glares at Janus. “No shit,” he snaps, reaching forwards with one hand to help Janus in hanging up his jacket, the other keeping the blanket firmly in place. “You didn’t have to rush over here, idiot. You still had power.”
“I could hardly leave you alone,” he replies, perhaps more soft and sincere than he had planned to be, as Virgil’s cheeks and ears (or what is visible of them, at least) redden. “And besides, we lost it a few minutes after you texted me.”
“What about Remus?” frowns his partner, always more concerned about others than himself, even if others include Janus’ consistently chaotic roommate.
“Patton is with him, they’ll be fine,” Janus says, dropping the takeout he’d grabbed from the 24/7 Chinese place around the corner on the table and turning to Virgil with his hands on his hips. “I’m more worried about you. This apartment is freezing.”
“I noticed,” Virgil says dryly, eyeing Janus’ wet clothes critically. “I have some sweatpants and stuff that might fit you. Can you get out the food while I grab them?”
“Grab my sweatshirt too,” Janus agrees, already pulling the plastic containers from the bag.
“What sweatshirt?” Virgil asks, the picture of innocence in the dim light of the flashlights, lanterns and candles scattered across the apartment, and Janus rolls his eyes.
“I know you stole it.”
“I stole nothing.”
“Liar,” he says affectionately, and laughs when Virgil flips him off.
Virgil does, in fact, get him his sweatshirt, and various other articles of warm clothing. Perhaps too many, once they reach the point where Janus reminds Virgil that three scarves may hinder the consumption of the delicious takeout he’s so generously bought them both.
“Then starve,” his partner grumbles, but doesn’t protest when Janus wraps the third scarf around Virgil’s neck instead.
Janus is better at using the chopsticks than Virgil is, but it is difficult for both of them to eat in the darkness, unable to see if they’ve actually picked up anything, and so all of their concentration goes to the food instead of their usual conversation. He doesn’t mind, however -- he’s always been able to find a comfort in silence with Virgil, a quiet that isn’t really quiet at all and wraps around them both like yet another blanket in the cold, dark room.
It doesn’t take long after they’ve finished and cleaned up for Virgil to begin falling asleep, Janus hardly more awake than he is -- it is two in the morning, after all, and neither of them have ever really been morning people (ignoring, of course, that this early in the day could really still be counted as night).
“I suppose I’d better get going,” he says reluctantly, standing and pressing a kiss to Virgil’s forehead. “You need to get to bed, and I... well, I should probably get on a train back home before all of the lines shut down-”
“No!” Virgil blurts out, grabbing his hand, before dropping it again like it had burned him. “I mean, I don’t... sorry.”
“You don’t have to be sorry,” Janus says, slowly entwining their fingers, giving his partner ample time and ability to pull away. Virgil does not, and he counts that as a victory. “What’s wrong, darling?”
“...Can’t you stay a little longer?” he asks, staring at the ground. “I don’t really want you to leave. You’re... you’re warm.”
“Oh, I see how it is,” exclaims Janus, masking the soft smile that tugs at his lips with a teasing grin, “you just want me for the cuddles, huh?”
“Of course,” Virgil answers, smiling too, the familiar banter a safety net for the moments of cautious vulnerability that, truth be told, scare them both.
Not that Janus would ever admit that, of course; he has always been a liar, and there is nothing he lies about more than his feelings, just as Virgil has always run away from the pesky things. They are, perhaps, the worst possible people to be in a romantic relationship together, and yet they work. They hold hands, they look out for each other, and, together, they each open up just a tiny bit more, buds beginning to bloom in the light of their individual suns.
“I can’t believe this betrayal,” he cries dramatically. “I thought you loved me!”
“I do,” Virgil says sincerely, and presses a kiss to their entwined hands, and if that doesn’t make Janus feel all warm and fuzzy inside... “But I love not freezing my butt off more.”
“Rude,” Janus huffs, but they end up curled together in Virgil’s bed anyways, within a nest of blankets and pillows, still holding hands as Virgil rests his head on Janus’ chest and closes his eyes. He is truly warm for the first time in hours, and there is no place, Janus thinks, that he would rather be than this.
"Wake me up when the power comes back on," Virgil murmurs, already half asleep.
"I will," Janus agrees, but he has always been a liar, and when he wakes up a few hours later to the bedside lamp flickering on besides them and the hum of the radiator beginning again in the corner, he simply reaches over and turns off the light, closing his eyes and drifting away once more to the sound of his partner's breathing, floating in the quiet in which there is only himself and Virgil.
