Ok ok ok ok listen. Because I have anxiety I feel it's my duty to say that this show won't be for everyone. I came to it over quarantine because my husband suggested we read Bernard Cornwell's series together, and I agreed because I liked Hornblower and knew this was the army equivalent and, let's face it, I wanted to see scruffy mid-thirties Sean Bean in uniform.

THE PREMISE:

Richard Sharpe is a lowborn rank-and-file soldier in the 95th Rifles during the Napoleonic Wars who is raised to an officer after saving Sir Arthur Wellesley's life (this all happens differently in the books, but the basic event is the same). Throughout the series, he rises in the ranks thanks to his bravery and heroism/recklessness, but he's always caught between two worlds--trying to be a leader of common men while never being accepted by the rest of the highborn officers.

Let's start with the bad:

CONS:

Look, this is a 90s drama glorifying the British army. So like, there are gonna be issues. Women are mostly romantic side pieces to be wooed and rescued, and there are plenty of subplots, verbiage, and stereotypes that didn't age well. Production values are low for the first few and so you've got battle scenes with like fifteen guys and a horse, which honestly I find endearing. But no episode is more cringey than Sharpe's Gold. Due to legal issues, the script had to be rewritten with none of the original material, and it turned into this bizarro semi-supernatural horror involving Aztec gold (in Spain, yes). It's completely different from all the other episodes, and even Sean Bean didn't like it (he called it a "mish mash," which is true). It's such a weird piece of work that we almost stopped watching the show, but we continued, and we were relieved to find that the rest of the series is markedly better. History Hack podcast does a great dive into why this episode was so whack.

PROS:

I MEAN COME ON

Sean really understood this character--absolute chaos on the battlefield and shy and awkward pretty much everywhere else. He's amazing in battle scenes and he's EPIC at acting wounded. But the scenes I replay over and over are when he's socially out of his depth and gets flustered and sputtery and so Sheffield the captions can't handle it.

Supporting cast:

You'll find a lot of your classic British TV favorites making appearances throughout this series, and the camaraderie among the riflemen is always fun. Obviously this is a dude fest, as stated above, but some of the women are also written and acted really, really well--- Assumpta Serna as Teresa is that winning combination of a love interest/action heroine who doesn't devolve into a damsel in distress, and even passes the Bechdel test on a few occasions. And Diana Perez as Ramona is so badass and enjoyable.

Locations: Aside from a few interior sets, these films are mostly shot outside on location, with practical effects and stunts. There's some gorgeous scenery of the Crimean peninsula standing in for Spain and Portugal, and it's just really fun watching these guys run around rocky escarpments and fields with flares and stage explosives going off around them.

Music: I saw someone tag the opening theme as "electric guitar jumpscare" and they're not wrong. It's wonderfully anachronistic and totally 90s and you'll never get used to it. But far better are the soldiers' songs John Tams threads throughout, as well as his and Muldowney's thematic scores, and you will always, always finish an episode with him singing "Over the Hills and Far Away" stuck in your head.

Filming Lore: There was a LOT that happened during filming. Everything from Paul McGann having to drop out as the lead to misadventures in filming in Crimea just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. History Hack podcast has an awesome series of "filming of" episodes with input from cast, crew, and historians, and Jason Salkey (Rifleman Harris) has a book called "From Crimea With Love" that details the batshit filming adventures. I haven't read it but he references it every six minutes throughout the podcasts.

So: you've been warned, you've been primed. Start with Sharpe's Rifles; it's on Youtube. Watch it and Eagle, maybe jump to Battle or Siege if you're not sure, and then make up your mind.

If this all sounds enjoyable to you, but you wish there were more tall ships, more Paul McGann, more heroic brooding, and even MORE true love cosplaying as masculine camaraderie, you're in luck! Because you should also watch Hornblower!

Tudor Houses Explained in 10 Minutes - Not particularly engagingly presented, but a video chock full of visual examples of different kinds of Tudor houses and buildings.

Modern History: The Knight - Jason Kingsley introduces us to the concept behind Modern History and in particular their first series, “The Knight”. Jason has been fascinated by history his whole life, in particular the medieval period and the life of knights. (This is the first video of a playlist).

Royal Armouries - Elizabethan Swordsmanship - a demonstration by weaponsmasters at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. (I recommend turning on closed captioning for this one, as the sound was recorded live with no mics.)

Getting Dressed - Tudor Royal Household - a nice, even-paced and well produced video showing what it was like to get dressed in queen Katherine Parr's household.

Dressing Up a Tudor Man - my personal heroes at Prior Attire show us what the blokes were wearing at the time. Keep in mind that this is 40 years too early for Hob and Dream's disastrous Shakespeare-ruined feast. (I love how scandalized she gets.)

Such sad news to hear today. An amazing, and enigmatic actor someone who deserved to be called a star.💫

British actor Tom Wilkinson, best known for his role in The Full Monty, has died aged 75 💔Wilkinson, who became an OBE for services to drama in 2005, was born in Leeds - Yorkshire in 1948 and grew up in Canada and Cornwall before attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) in the 1970s.

In 1994, he appeared as Pecksniff in the BBC's adaptation of Charles Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit. He is pictured alongside Maggie Steed.

Across an illustrious career spanning nearly 50 years, Wilkinson won a host of acting awards, as well as two Oscar nominations. He won a BAFTA for 'The Full Monty,' and he also appeared in 'Shakespeare in Love,' 'In the Bedroom,' 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' and 'Batman Begins', He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Benjamin Franklin in the 'John Adams' miniseries. A versatile actor won acclaim through decades of work in television and film and onstage. Recently he was reunited with his The Full Monty co-stars, Carlyle and Mark Addy, in a Disney+ series of the same name.

Who remembers this classic!

The original 1997 comedy about an unlikely group of male strippers in Sheffield won an Oscar for Best Original Musical or comedy score and was nominated for three others, including best picture and best director.

Wilkinson’s best roles. Here are his finest films, Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis was an officer of the British Army and one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence.

Wilkinson played a British officer in The Patriot, a US film about the Revolutionary War co-starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger and Jason Isaacs. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards.

From The Full Monty to Michael Clayton: was a lawyer - Arthur Edens - in Michael Clayton film 🎥 co-starring George Clooney. Tom Wilkinson was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role for In The Bedroom in 2001, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Michael Clayton in 2007.

Wilkinson was winning acclaim again as a high-powered lawyer who has a breakdown in Tony Gilroy’s “Michael Clayton.” He was nominated for another Academy Award for his performance in that film.

In ‘Denial’, Confronting a Holocaust Revisionist in Court. Denial is a drama about a historian’s pursuit through the UK justice system by a Holocaust denier. It stars Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Spall, Andrew Scott, Jack Lowden, Caren Pistorius and Alex Jennings.

On television, he played Benjamin Franklin in “John Adams,” James A. Baker in “Recount,” for which he was Emmy-nominated and Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. in “The Kennedys.”

In Ava DuVernay's 2014 historical drama Selma, Wilkinson portrayed President Lyndon B Johnson. The film tells of the protest marches held in Alabama in 1965 over voting rights for African Americans.

WITCH Season 2 - Nerissa’s revenge Rewrite

So this is a continuation of how CHYKN’s characterization is different from comics to tv show. And I fell into a tangent about how I’d change the tv show if I got to reboot WITCH. I don’t have ideas for Season 1 yet but I have stuff for season 2.

I am starting to think they tried to fit way too much in season two which is why it flopped but I get it. They wanted to make an action packed season like the first one but also darker. I can think of ideas on how to pay homage to the ex guardians and giving each a nice story to get to know their characters better. It would have been nice to have an episode or two that focused on the five of them and their stories. Perhaps seeing them in school, how they learned of their destiny and how they worked together as a team. It would also be nice to have like hints in the background like how they do in the Owl House. Eventually we could get to the tragedy and the falling out. In the end of the two parter, we’d see how the remaining three decided to remain friends but to distance from each other, a big mistake they didn’t realize until Nerissa came back and corrupted each of them. We could combine elements from the Tv show and the comics. Season two would obviously focus on trauma. The WITCH girls but their stuff would be paralleled by CHYKN’s story. We’d learn about the old guardians and have the new ones learn from the old ones’ mistakes which is what the comics emphasized.

Kadma and Halinor are the couple of the group. Cassidy and Nerissa were star crossed lovers doomed from the beginning but Kalinor were the envy of all of Sheffield. And it’s 2022 so we want healthy wlw representation up in here. These two are all about battling the patriarchy and its backwards, archaic, hypocritic rules. They could be the foundation of the group. They knew and loved each since elementary when Kadma first moved to Heatherfield. Then they met Nerissa, a queer baby they had to take under their wing and the adorable Cassidy who easily melted their hearts and soundly absorbed her into their group. Yan Lin was the final addition to the team and they all loved her greatly as their newest sister. Kadma had reservations about becoming a guardian but it’s Halinor who convinced her how much good they could with this opportunity beyond just Earth. The Guardians have more than often been a group of magical women doing good across the infinite dimensions, how could Halinor say no to that. While growing up, they’d start the Rising Star Foundation. The two were guardians and life partners. No one could really pull them apart. They were Earth and Fire melded together. Nothing was more precious to them than each other. Nothing but their fellow guardians. They were all so incredibly close in a way only other guardian groups could understand. Which is why the tragedy with Nerissa and Cassidy shook their couple hard. Without their heart, even the foundation crumbled. Yan Lin was all about harmony and she desperately wanted to keep that but Kalinin began drifting apart but that was in vain. They just didn’t work as cohesively as a trio. They stood together for many things starting with denouncing the oracle but things just weren’t the same anymore. Kadma began hardened and dispassioned about magic and Halinor no longer recognized the women she once loved and stopped believing in Kadma. The final straw that promptly led to their breakup was Kadma taking up the crown of Zamballah. They were going to leave the whole magical business behind and Kadma takes this up? Halinor and Yan Lin end up becoming a duo for a few more years until they both decide it’s time to end their guardianship. Yan Lin stays in Heatherfield while Halinor moves away. Kadma visits her old friends but quite rarely. And Halinor and Yan Lin are called from time to time to Kandrakar to discuss certain issues. Halinor May still have reservations but she still recognizes the good and honor Kandrakar does, even years after she spoke out against the oracle. I won’t write everything I have planned for season two here but I know I still want Nerissa to come after her old friends and collect them for her team of guardians to take over the magical universe. Nerissa would want to capture Cassidy’s soul first. But when couldn’t corrupt her soul, she let her go and created an Altermere that got to live and love for a bit while she collected the others. I imagine she’d attack Halinor and Kadma together. She’ll threaten Zamballa and make a show of it on Kandrakar. Halinor would be the first to fall into Nerissa’s corruption and this is how she gets revealed as a threat. Next up, Zamballa where Nerissa still preys upon Kadma’s inflated arrogance from years untreated grief and trauma. She could have used her love for Halinor but she knew without Halinor to balance her out, Kadma is practically defenseless. Next she goes to Yan Lin. Yan Lin was known for her strength of character too. Nerissa couldn’t corrupt her either and was forced to build a second altermere. This use of flagrant use of magic to copy a life distabilizes Nerissa further. Then easily she corrupts Cassidy’s altermere.

The team’s all back together and with double WITCH’s power. But in time, Irma wakes them up from Nerissa’s thrall and more in fighting begins with the five of them. It seems like Nerissa is about to lose when she absorbs all four of her friends into Meridian’s heart and gains all of their powers. She continues to build an army against Kandrakar when Will remembers she wants the heart of Kandrakar specifically. The girls have managed to delay her takeover but for how long. In the current circumstances, it’s best to just give Nerissa the heart and she gives up the heart of Zamballa. That’s where real Cassidy steps in with her copy of the heart, her Star. This gives the girls the power to return to Kandrakar and fight Nerissa. Nerissa brings terror and nightmare to the temple like in the comics but what she didn’t count on was the heart of meridian cracking and the ex guardians + real Yan Lin and Elyon escape (yes she was trapped in there too like in the show). This makes Nerissa susceptible to the Terrors she unleashed on everyone too. During the nightmare sequences she gave everyone, we get to see what unknown forces pushed Nerissa to evil and we get to understand her personal traumas better. In this sequence the old and new guardians come together to fight Nerissa and her goons. The new guardians are fighting to defeat her, the old ones are fighting to possibly heal their old friend. They nearly succeed when altermere Cassidy gets killed. This awakens Nerissa’s heart and her evil side gets detached from her long enough for the new guardians to destroy Nerissa for good. Real Cassidy appears and absorbs altermere Cassidy which allows her to linger just a bit longer in the real world. The dreamscape ends and everyone is back in the temple. The old guardians gather around a dying Nerissa who’s back to the self before she was corrupted. She acknowledges the horrors she unleashed upon the world and apologizes for destroying their group, saying she let her heart decay since childhood.Cassidy mentions the two of them were opposites on the good and evil scales and purely existed to balance each other. Kadma asks where did she hear that, the oracle? No Cassidy learned that in death. She helps her friends see that their story, albeit tragic and painful made way to a beautiful future and to an even more powerful group of guardians. Had they not been, A darkness would have led to the fall of kandrakar and WITCH would not have existed. Cassidy urges Kadma and Halinor to make up, because they still love each other dearly. Nerissa couldn’t have corrupted either if they weren’t each other’s greatness strength and weakness. Cassidy can’t linger much longer but she smiles brightly telling her friends she’s missed them all greatly, and while she’s ecstatic Nerissa will be joining her, she will wait patiently for the remaining three to cross over. Nerissa finds it beautiful that she gets to end her life with the people dearest to her heart in their most beautiful selves, exactly how she held them in her memory. The five ex guardians hug one last time uttering a saying they hold dearly to their hearts (like an inside joke). Their trauma may not be completely healed, but at least it’s not unbearable to think about anymore.

By the end of the season, Cassidy and Nerissa remain blissful in death, Yan Lin is still living her life with her granddaughter and new guardians in Heatherfield while also making plans to join Kandrakar, and Halinor and Kadma are back together, living in Fadden Hills as advisors to Rising Star but also coming to Heatherfield to visit Yan Lin from time to time.

Since I can’t find it, I’ll rewrite it myself just so I know it’s on my blog. It’s such a good concept: When Jason and Nico got together, you’d think Thalia would give Nico the shovel talk. So it came to everyone’s surprise that it was Jason who got the rough treatment.

Thalia: look here you little shit. This angel has been through so much. He deserves some happiness in his life so if you do anything to break his heart, I will personally escort you to Tartarus and dump you there.

Happy Birthday, Scottish actor Jimmy McKenna.

jimmy is best known for the part of Jack Osbourne in the channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, and is one of the longest running characters having joined around 26 years ago in 1996.

McKenna was born on August 31, 1953 in Glasgow, some of you might remember him in the excellent Touch of Frost with David Jason.

Jimmy was a professional footballer and had a promising career at Sheffield Wednesday, but it was cut short after a back injury.

Before joining the long running soap he appeared in Waterfront Beat, Rumpole of the Bailey, Heartbeat and of course, as almost every Scottish actor, Taggart, playing two different characters during the Glasgow Cop shows long run. He also played Father Rainey in Highlander,

Jimmy lives in Sheffield with his wife and four children.

My Top Albums/EPs of 2023

It's that time.

It's a tradition of mine to post my end-of-the-year music list. I used to get music questions + recommendations all the time. This goes back to the days of the Hypster Music Player we used to have on our pages (remember those lol) before the DMCA roll out.

As a heads up, I'm a violinist with a BFA in Music and Audio Production. I'm a timbre listener first 🤷🏽‍♀️. No surprise there. Some people listen to music for the lyrics first, melody first, a catchy hook first, etc. I'm a tone color and texture person as it relates to vocality, instrumentation, and the arrangement/combination of frequencies altogether. (For more on that and how you can confirm/discover what kind of listener you are, this book, which I reviewed, is a go-to.)

The Great Debate!

Last week, two of our Upper Sixth students, Avneet and Rhea, represented the School in ‘The Great Debate’, an event run by the Historical Association. They had to argue which place or person from their local area deserved further historical recognition and Avneet spoke about Lidice Place, while Rhea focussed on Maganbhai Patel - a South Asian photographer who migrated to Coventry. Both students did exceptionally well, with Avneet receiving a ‘highly commended’ and Rhea being named winner. Rhea now goes forward to represent Warwickshire in the next round.

I frequently talk to pupils about the need to be interested in the world around them and this is a perfect example of this. I therefore have included an edited version of Rhea’s speech below and we wish her all the best in the next stage of the competition. Unfamiliarity. Loneliness. Inhibition.

These are the feelings that confronted my South African-Indian mother when she first moved to the UK at age 29. She was met with the sudden dilemma of choosing where to settle in a country often known to be unwelcome to people like her.

This personal anecdote goes to serve the microcosm between my chosen historical figure and thousands of similar families in my local area across generations. This person is Maganbhai Patel, commonly referenced as Masterji. I wonder who has heard of him? Probably not many, but in my opinion, this should change.

Born in India, Patel arrived at the Liverpool docks in 1951. He was one of the 30,000 people a year that emigrated from the New Commonwealth in the 1950s and 1960s, according to Sheffield City Council’s old archives.

Masterji came to the UK pursuing his own ‘English Dream’. It wasn't long before his friends started to approach him for their photos so that they could send them back to their families in India. At first, he would take black and white photographs of single men who had come to Coventry. This would flourish into wedding and family photographs. In 1969, he opened the Master's Art Studio, taking photos of people from all walks of life: from a bus conductor to Parvanna, a Coventry-based South Asian band. His work is a unique first-hand account of Coventry’s diversity.

I spoke with Tarla Patel, daughter of Maganbhai, who followed in her father’s footsteps to become a contemporary artist. She said, “our stories have been told through news and media by people who were unaware and uneducated to the immigrant experience. Narratives of colour have been constantly only associated with trauma and negativity. Showing these images of people from the postwar era through the decades by an Asian photographer of a similar background gives perhaps a truer picture of new migrants through their transition to a citizen”. They are the changing faces of people owning the space they lived in.

A perfect example of this would be the importance of South-Asian immigrants to business in Coventry. Post-World War II, more than 10,000 soldiers from surrounding areas had died. These immigrants joined the engineering and textiles workforce to rebuild society. Indeed, in his book ‘Revival of a City: Coventry in a Globalising World’, Jason Begley asserts that worldwide economic forces have served to make this settlement a more innovative and dynamic economy.

To conclude, I believe that Maganbhai Patel deserves to be recognised as a pioneer in Asian photography in Coventry. We are all reminded of the enduring power of visual storytelling, and through his lens, he captured the triumphs and the profound sense of community that immigration has brought to Britain.

I would like to end with a quote from his daughter, “I invite people to reflect on the changing identities of my father’s subjects and to contemplate the stories to be told and the lives to be lived. Through his work, we will remember not just the past, but also the endless possibilities of the future.”

Shangri-La Resort Names Lance Funderburk General Manager Shangri-La Resort, Oklahoma’s premier waterfront golf and outdoor recreation destination, has announced the hiring of hospitality veteran Lance Funderburk in the newly created position of General Manager. In that position, he utilized his leadership and team-building skills to head all operations activities of the $1.2 billion resort, with oversight of approximately 1,500 employees. A native of Macedonia, South Carolina, Funderburke served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps prior to beginning his hospitality career at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. He has served in leadership roles at hotels and resorts in Maui, Honolulu, South Carolina, and Virginia Beach, expanding his skill set to encompass management and oversight of the full slate of hotel operations. His career has included key positions in a variety of hotels, from privately owned facilities to major brands such as Wyndham, Starwood, Resort Trust, Diamond, and Hilton. “Once I got here to meet with (Executive Chairman) Jason Sheffield and (President & CEO) Barry Willingham, it was the people who changed my mind.
