The BEST mystery cartoon that nobody has heard of
Hello folks!
Today, I wanted to provide you guys with an amazing cartoon recommendation! This is one especially for fans of shows like Gravity Falls! The cartoon is one from the early 2010s called Detentionaire!
Tumblr media
It’s about a high school student named Lee, who, on his first day of tenth grade, gets framed for a huge prank and gets detention for a whole year. Now, he spends every day trying to find out who set him up. However, he soon realizes that the prank was a small component to a huge conspiracy that involves government projects, clones, prophesied events, monsters and even his own family.
If you love shows like Gravity Falls, I would definitely check it out! It is quite similar in terms of the amount of mystery it has in it, and it has a lot of lore. If I were to describe it in any way, I would say it is what you get when you combine Gravity Falls with Total Drama - the characters are all teenagers, but the show has an overarching mystery, and it gets more and more paranormal as it goes on.
One thing I will say is that the first few episodes are a bit slow, which may turn some away, but once it picks up, it is amazing. It is definitely one of the best cartoons of the 2010s, and it deserves more attention, so if you are looking for a new cartoon, I’d check it out!
There are two places where you can legally watch it:
YouTube
Tubi
Also, I just want to say that if there are any cartoons you find underrated, please make me aware! Detentionaire was a series which was screwed over by the network, and this led to it not being too well known. As a fan, I would love nothing more than to see it grow in terms of popularity, and I would also love to give more shows a shot as so many get swept under the radar!

okAY lets TRY THIS AGAIN. Accidentally deleted the first one so GONNA TRY NOT TO LOSE THIS ONE TOO. cries about losing the first draft.
Some thoughts about the plot aspects of the finale. PSA here: i still really loved the finale of the show, and any criticism about it doesn’t change that!
Here we go! Amphibia Finale Spoilers Ahead!
I did not!
 like the God!
The introduction of the god and the Deus Ex Machina of its reviving Anne did not feel consistent with the canon of the show. Tonally, it came out of left field. For a show that is so grounded in personal growth, change, family, and the love that people have for each other, it seemed disingenuous for Anne to be saved by a completely unrelated, unknown character. I would argue that the Anime Calamity Girls Final Battle was also tonally inconsistent with the rest of the show, but we were also expecting this final conflict. The show has set up for ages that the girls would all get Calamity powers, through the background murals and hints, and then in Season 3B introducing the prophecy as a concrete plot point.
Cosmic Domino, however, was never mentioned, aside from a one-off joke when Anne was high off pain medication. There was never any discussion of the origin of the gems themselves, merely the effects of their power. We were not primed for this moment.
Additionally, and this may be bias from recognizing the voice actress from her work as Ruby from Steven Universe, the personality of the god rubbed me the wrong way. It seemed so immature. It is reminiscent of the drawing of 6 year old Anne, “I hate responsibility”, to have it wanting to quit its job, then almost throwing a tantrum when Anne refused its offer. It specifically mentioned a timeline of 10,000 years watching the gems, which to me sounds like a very short period in the grand scheme of a cosmic entity. This “god” seems YOUNG.
I also don’t believe that Anne will take it up on its offer when she passes away. I personally find there is a certain tragedy in a mortal being becoming immortal. I don’t believe that a mortal mind is capable of taking on the responsibility of a god. We are not capable of comprehending that grand scope of existence, and there is something downright depressing about the idea of watching your loved ones wither and pass away, while you continue on.
I love this non-canon Alternate Ending by Joe Johnston. I have accepted it as my headcanon for the conclusion of the Cosmic Domino plot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDN86msGBtY
Thematically, it feels wrong for Anne to be saved by someone that doesn’t care for her personally. So here’s my re-vision of the finale with more focus on Love:
Anne wields the full power of the Calamity Gems and destroys the moon. Sprig and Frobo bring her faded body back to Earth, and lay her in the water. Her body is cracking, crumbling, but not fallen apart completely yet.
The people of Amphibia, Anne’s friends, family, community, gather around, their joy quickly transitioning to shock and grief as they realize Anne is dying. She speaks her last words, takes her last breath, and goes still.
They gather around, supporting each other in their grief for the girl who they loved, and who loved them enough to give her everything to save them. The sun starts to fade, the stars reflecting bright on the water, no longer competing with the moon. And Sprig doesn’t want to let go of Anne’s body.
But as the sky darkens, a new light starts to shine amongst them. From each of their chests, a blue light starts to glow. Like fireflies, these motes float into the sky, drifting towards Anne’s body. They flow into her, and as each passes into her chest, her body starts to glow, brighter and brighter until she’s shining with an unearthly light. The cracks along her body start to seal over, and suddenly, Anne coughs.
Tumblr media
When the light fades, color has returned to Anne. She opens her eyes, and there’s a glimmer of blue light contained in her pupils.
Because Amphibia is its people, and the power of the gems was just their will condensed, given form. When the gems broke, that power didn’t disappear, merely dissipated back into their world. And in their grief, their love for Anne, became the will of Amphibia, and gave life back to the girl who gave everything for them. She’s been brought back to life by their love.
With the themes of love and change and family, I think it would have been far more impactful for the people of Amphibia to bring Anne back to life instead of some random God :’)

Anne or beast
10/10
I think this is a perfect first episode. I couldn’t ask for anything better. It establishes the general vibe of wartwood (slow to accept, even slower to respect), shows how Anne lived on her own in a cave before moving in with the planters, and we get the introduction of Spranne. I also like how we can see Anne deconstructing her previous selfishness after only being in amphibia for a short time (risking her own life to save sprig instead of running when she had the chance.) and the foreshadowing of the calamity powers!!! I also LOVE the final scene where it shows her desperation for the box to work and to go home. It’s so sad and you can feel her frustration and pain
Best Fronds
10/10 again!
I like that we get to see Anne’s feelings of missing home and missing her friends, as well as some background on how she arrived in amphibia. We get the iconic “without them I just feel like of lost” line. We get more spranne development and sprig being caring and empathetic of her situation (I love him). We see more of Anne’s irresponsible and impulsive side (she’s adhd fr) when she sneaks out to the lake, and we start to see a little bit of how unhealthy Anne’s previous friendship was and Sprig’s loneliness before Anne. I think it’s really interesting how we see Anne displaying the same manipulative behaviors as Sasha, likely because she thinks it’s normal and how friendships should be after being with Sasha for 8+ years. But we also see the cracks in the trios friendship with Anne stating how she really didn’t want to steal the music box and felt pressured into it by Sasha and Marcy. The first time I watched amphibia I was SHOCKED when they showed Sasha at the end of the episode, and it still makes me sad when I see it. Overall this episode was really good at further developing the plot and establishing the relationship between Anne and the Plantars

Marcy Wu - The saddest character I have ever seen
Tumblr media
Marcy was introduced in Season 2 - a decision that Matt Braly admitted was very risky because we wouldn’t have known who she is if Disney didn’t renew Amphibia.
And that’s just the beginning of this character’s luck on this show.
----
Amphibia started off in Season 1, with all the world-building of the show’s premise and the introduction to our main character, Anne Boonchuy, and the temporary villain at that point, Sasha Waybright.
Then Season 2 comes in and it introduces the hidden plot of Amphibia - how did the girls get in this dimension, how will they ever get back, and what’s the deal with the Calamity Box. And with it, comes the introduction of our loveable, dorky, and clumsy Marcy Wu - the catalyst to everything.
It isn’t new information to anyone that Marcy (along with Sasha) made Anne steal the Calamity Box without knowing the consequences of that action.
She hoped that it will transport them to another world because she wanted to get away from reality. It was her escapism. She said it in her confession that she “didn’t want to be alone”, so if there is ever a slim chance that she will be transported to another world (as mentioned in the book that she so happened to have come across), she wants to share that experience with her best friends.
It was such a simple plot point: Marcy just wanted to escape reality because the fear of moving physically away from her best friends hurt her so much.
But then... ‘The Beginning of the End’ aired and... we got more information.
And it’s the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The episode clearly showed how Anne and Sasha really couldn’t care less about Marcy’s interests. Which was something I was so shocked about.
I understand that it’s a very “Sasha thing” to not really be interested in nerdy stuff like that. But Anne? Her best friend since kindergarten? Who protected her no matter the circumstance? I could see that Anne tried her hardest to pay attention, but...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...in the end, Marcy was ignored, neglected, and even worse...
Tumblr media
...she was just the second option.
Right then, I understood that the desperation she showed in ‘True Colors’ was valid and understandable. If she can’t get her friends to like her interests by normal means, then she’s willing to try another way - even if it meant indirectly forcing them.
I will never forget those sad expressions.
She probably couldn’t help but did the things she did because she loves them (platonically, in this post) and she just wants to be loved the same amount back.
It was selfish, and she definitely realized that by ‘True Colors’.
Tumblr media
That was why she fought the CloakBots without needing Anne or anyone to tell her to do so.
Tumblr media
That was why she took it upon herself to save Sprig when he was thrown out of Newtopia Castle.
Tumblr media
That was why she apologized... “for everything”.
She didn’t mean to do the things she did. At the heat of the moment of learning that she’ll be moving away, she never stopped to think about the pros and cons of what she was about to do. For someone so smart, Marcy did something very dumb for the sake of attaining happiness.
Tumblr media
She even admitted it herself when her greatest fear was shown in ‘Olivia & Yunan’.
Tumblr media
And because plot have to move forward and make things interesting, Marcy had to be possessed in order for The Core to have a body.
Although I had experienced immense trauma in ‘Olivia & Yunan’ (because who in the name of fuck would even expect a possession scene with an agonizing scream coming out of the character’s mouth from a “KID’S SHOW ON DISNEY CHANNEL”), I was so damn excited for the Dark Marcy arc because I thought it’ll give Marcy an avenue to go berserk. To get justifiably angry; to get childishly salty about how Anne and Sasha had treated her for the past several years.
Communication is key to any relationship, whether romantic or platonic. Marcy had never been honest with Anne and Sasha about how hurt she was with their decisions. So if it takes getting her possessed so agonizingly like that for her to finally be honest and show her true colors, then by all means! It’s good!
It gives more meaning to her confession in ‘True Colors’.
It gives more meaning to her possession in ‘Olivia & Yunan’.
However... what did we get?
Tumblr media
She was locked in the deepest room of The Core’s mind, seemingly having an amnesia (but then had her memories partially back once she saw Anne and Sasha which was so, so weird), and was being tricked by Former King Aldrich in staying by showing her the fantasy that she had always dreamed of. In other words, she returned to her escapism... again. Even after she admitted it was dumb and she was so, so sorry about it a few episodes ago.
Sigh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seeing Marcy just succumb to the fact that she will never be able to get her friends to like the same things as her or be as excited was so darn painful to watch (in fact, it hits too close to home that I literally felt a pain in my heart when I saw that scene). Her shaky voice, the expression, the tears... god. Superb performance by Haley Tju as always.
But... this also means that she realized this all on her own. And the way she said it made it sound like she was the ONLY one at fault.
Which is fucking sad because... it’s not true.
Anne and Sasha are extroverts. They are able to converse with people and “make connections” which Marcy admitted she couldn’t do since she can’t even hold proper eye contact with people. She was obviously getting indirectly hurt whenever they do their thing and she couldn’t participate because she’s just not that type of person.
What I would’ve wanted was for Anne and Sasha to confront Marcy on why SHE’S wrong, and at the same time for Marcy to confront Anne and Sasha on why THEY’RE wrong - establishing a proper discussion between the three of them so they can learn to appreciate each other more, to forgive each other of their individual mistakes, and for their friendship to grow stronger than before.
Why is it so damn hard to put this in the canon show?
I don’t want Anne, Sasha, and Marcy to realize their shortcomings behind-the-scenes or individually without the affected parties. Again, it’s all about communication. This can tie in with Amphibia’s message of “change”. Because the three of them are working hard to get their friendship stronger as ever. Marcy never established any form of companionship or anything resembling a found family in Newtopia. She was just respected because she was smart. Lady Olivia probably cares for her, but to the extent of a “higher-up towards an important guest”. Don’t even get me started on King Andrias because we all know what that pompous idiot had done. It’s just so sad that Marcy had to do this all on her own, no guidance, no discussion, no one to tell her that her feelings are valid but it’s still something that she shouldn’t do. Look at Anne being Sasha’s support when the blonde-haired girl was doubtful about forgiving Marcy.
At the end of this mini arc regarding Marcy, when The Core has been defeated and she was able to get back to her body...
Tumblr media
...we get another apology from her. And another confession.
Tumblr media
And after Anne’s speech, she just... went back to normal. She was forgiven. The “emotional baggage” that was ‘True Colors’ was never properly discussed. The three of them had their own discoveries all on their own and they just... forgive each other and that’s it.
Sigh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Core did a fucking good job in intimidating Anne and Sasha.
If only this was Marcy herself.
Up until the end, Marcy was just a tool for others to use. Her body was used as a vessel for the hundreds(?) of amphibians / Leviathan ancestors. She was only mentioned because she contributed something useful (her journal, her knowledge of Domino 2’s species that Anne somehow remembered, her favorite movie that was used as reference for battle strategy). She never had her own development, never had the opportunity to go apeshit and tell her best friends her real feelings and intentions.
She thinks she’s the only one who did anything wrong.
No one had ever worried about her well-being.
It’s... It’s just... so sad.

Things Get Better?: LGBTQ Representation in Animation in 2022 [Part 2]
Continued from part 1
youtube
In 2022, there was a plethora of LGBTQ characters in Western animation, from gay warriors Orc and Iago in Battle Kitty to a lesbian drama teacher in Dee Dee Holloway in Big Nate. Other series featured gay couples (as in Baymax!), gay and lesbian parents (as in Firebuds), and many other lesbian, bisexual, non-binary, and queer characters. [3]
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the nineteenth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 16, 2023.
Some series had more representation than others. One of these was The Legend of Vox Machina, airing on Amazon Prime and based on the Critical Role roleplaying podcast, which featured lesbian, bisexual, and queer characters, specifically Vex'ahlia "Vex" de Rolo, Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar, Lady Kima, Keyleth of the Air Ashari, Scanlan Shorthalt, and Lady Allura Vysoren. Stephanie Beatriz, a bisexual actress, voiced two of these characters: Lady Kima and Lady Allura. In addition, there were was a reboot of Monster High which premiered on Nickelodeon in fall 2022, with more gender diversity and LGBTQ characters, such as a non-binary monster named Frankie Stein and two lesbian moms (Medusa and Lyra).
Just as powerful was the reboot of The Proud Family in a series named The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. It aired on Disney+ from February to April of 2022. Created by the same person as the original, Bruce W. Smith, it includes three gay characters: Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins, Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins, and Michael Collins. There were also one-time lesbian characters and queer vibes among other characters, who are part of the show's mostly Black cast.
One of these characters is Maya, a 14-year-old anti-racist activist voiced by Keke Palmer. Although Palmer is an actress who has described herself as sexually fluid and queer, it remains to be seen whether Maya will be "sexually fluid and queer as much as Palmer is in real-life."
This was followed, later in 2022, by the much-expected Dead End: Paranormal Park, which Netflix recently cancelled. This series broke barriers as the first animated series with a trans protagonist named Barney Guttman. He is voiced by a trans male actor, Zach Barack. The show also includes Norma Khan who likes multiple genders and is ambiguously queer, and Courtney, who is non-binary. This series goes beyond the barrier-breaking of High Guardian Spice, a series by a trans male creator, Raye Rodriguez, who voiced one of the show's characters (Caraway), or the trans male lead character in Wendell & Wild (Raúl Cocolotl), who was said to be the first trans man in an animated film.
2022 heralded the end of the much-beloved Disney series, Amphibia. The series featured LGBTQ characters who were confirmed after the show's finale, like bisexual Sasha Waybright, voiced by bisexual actress Anna Akana. There's also Mr. X, Frodrick Toadstool, and Toadie who are gay, Yunan and Lady Olivia who are lesbian, Ally who is pansexual, and Jess who is bisexual.

[3] This includes lesbian characters Nadja el-Koury and Danielle in Human Resources, Laura Feinberg as a bisexual woman in Little Demon, a queer non-binary couple (Gladys and Wren) in Pinecone & Pony, a non-binary Faerie student named Jae in Supernatural Academy, and a non-binary transformer named Nightshade in Transformers: EarthSpark. In addition, Dragon Age: Absolution, which only aired for six episodes in December 2022, featured four of LGBTQ characters (Miriam, Hira, Roland, and Lacklon), with Qwydion voiced by Ashly Burch who came out as queer and pansexual in July 2022.

The family shrub and genealogy in Amphibia
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! In my quest to watch more animations, apart from two of my favorite shows, Futurama and Carmen Sandiego, I'd like to talk about one of my favorite shows, Amphibia, and family history themes in the show.
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on July 29, 2020.
In the episode "Family Shrub," Sprig and Polly think their family history is boring. However, their minds are changed when they "uncover family secrets buried deep under their very own home." Oh my! At the beginning of the episode, when Sprig is gluing on new pictures onto the tree, Anne says: "back home, we'd call this a family tree." Hop Pop laughs, saying that is "why everyone in your world is crazy." Anyway, he is reading from a book of family history at the beginning of the episode, which has tabs in it, noting specific sections.
Tumblr media
I love that Hop Pop gets excited from reading the family history (which he probably put together) while the other characters are bored by it. I love the parts where he says that one of the ancestors was a "king" with everyone excited, then adding "king of single-tiered irrigation systems." This makes it one of the most hilarious parts of this whole episode, seriously.
Tumblr media
After this, Polly declares that "our ancestors were boring" and Sprig declares, in an annoyed tone, "were they all just farm frogs?" This is equivalent to my statement where I said that my ancestors were "dang farmers" from Massachusetts. Sprig wants to know about the artists, the poets, and the dreamers. Honestly, this episode is making fun of people who boast about their family histories. I mean, it could be. Hop Pop makes a good point that could apply to anyone who grumbles about their ancestors:
"Just farm frogs? Kids, the point of the shrub is to give you an appreciation for your past. The Plantar family has layers. You just have to know where to look."
Anne accepts that and begins asking about ancestors on the tree. Hop Pop explains how each of the ancestors is unique, although none of his kids, or Anne, are impressed by his explanation. Anne then notes how she won't find any ancestors on the shrub (which is true). Pop then says that you can be related to another person in a family, but not by blood. That's because she is part of the family grouping, although she can't claim any of their descendants as her own, as she isn't "indirectly" or "directly" descended from any of them.
Pop continues to be dedicated to finishing the shrub, their version of a family tree and goes to the store to get glue. After he leaves, Polly says "you're lucky you're an outsider, Anne, because our family history is lame." Sprig then adds that there wasn't anyone weird, different, or fun. He even looks at a painting, obviously looking like the American Gothic painting, and it opens a secret passageway, exciting them all.
Tumblr media
They find a dusty room, with weird scientific samples, in what could be described as a dungeon. They find documents showing the place belonged to their great uncle, Skip Plantar, who turns out to be a farmer and a brilliant scientist at the same time. He experimented with all kinds of things. Sprig wants to know more, so he pulls a lever.
Tumblr media
What comes out is…a pumpkin abomination. Sprig saves them both by leaving this creature back into its cage. Then, they fall through the floor and find another room. In this place, it is revealed that their ancestor was not just a turnip farmer but a "turned up warrior" (Polly says this while flexing her muscles)
Tumblr media
Then, they find her diary, where she recounts how she was in a "lot of battles." Sprig, being impulsive, pulls another lever, almost killing them both. They move on through, finding more hidden chambers. In one instance, a diary reveals someone who traveled around, collecting a lot of "cool stuff," and settled with the Plantars. Anne has a revelation: "I had your family history all wrong, guys. The Plantars weren't just farmers." Sprig adds that they were "twisted" while Polly says they were "pretty cool." They get back to the living room, beat up, and exhausted from their journey. They tell Pop about the secret areas with family heirlooms, with Polly saying she is "proud to be a Plantar." This excites him a lot. Polly adds that their ancestors were the "most amazing scientist-warrior farmers ever!" Sprig says that "everyone needs to know about it."
Tumblr media
Pop says he wants to see the rooms below the house as well. Anne tries to caution him, but their caution is ignored. So, he runs down into the dungeon on an adventure, with Anne, Polly, and Sprig going to help him (and Wally who is glued to his back, one of the episode's side stories). The episode ends there. I have to say that this is one of the best depictions of family history I've seen in a while.

What I post -
I basically post whatever I want! Though, I will try to keep this blog to art, writing and book reviews/recommendations. I also might reblog some fandom stuff from my fandom blog, I love doing character breakdowns and sharing my opinions. I will occasionally also reblog but mostly just funny or relevant things! I may also talk about my experience as an autistic person from time to time.
So:
Art
Writing
Book Reviews
Book Recommendations
Occasional Reblogs
Autism Stuff
Random Things

Special Interests -
As an autistic person, I figure my special interests will come up a LOT. So here's a list of the general ones. I'm leaving out my media-related ones.
Animation
Character Design
Video Game Creation
Early 2000s and Late 90s Robotic Toys
Mental Health

Fandom -
I'm a multi-fandom multi-shipper who loves to make headcanons. I'll probably be keeping most of my headcanons to myself but you never know!
Obviously, fandom content will go on the fandom blog but sometimes it might make it's way here? These are the main fandoms I'm in, I'm in so many fandoms that even I find it hard to keep track of!! In no particular order:
Bugsnax
Lego Monkie Kid
The Stanley Parable
Centaurworld
Pokemon
Furbys
The Owl House
Amphibia
Undertale
Deltarune
Sanrio
ENA
Metarunner
Animal Crossing
Squishmallows
And more!!

I'm kind of a major mess but, welcome to my blog!! I'll add to this if I think of anything else but I think this should be it!
