Mutated Gene That Causes Webbed Limbs in Humans May Have Given Bats Wings
A key genetic mutation—harmful in humans—may have opened the sky to bats
Bats have done something no other mammal ever has: the leathery-winged beasts evolved powered flight thanks to specialized membranes called patagia connecting their limbs and digits to the rest of their body. A new study of bat embryos in BMC Biology reveals a crucial step in how these once land-bound animals evolved to fly—and it may involve a gene known for detrimental mutations in humans...

Southern Pudu
Pudu Pudu
Appearance
The Southern Pudu is currently the smallest deer in the world. Reaching just up to 35cm (14 inches) tall at the shoulder and weighing 8k (18 pounds). With its short, sturdy legs, round build, and small size, it has adapted to living in dense forests. Where it can thread its way through thickets and trees. To escape from predators, it can climb forests up to 3,200 metres in altitude.
Habitat
The southern Pudu can be found in south-western Argentina and south Chile. They inhabit dense temperate forests, where they can search for the appropriate foods.
Diet
The southern pudu eats a variety of shrub, for it is a herbivore. Meaning it feasts on grass and vegetation. The southern Pudu diet consists of; Leaves from trees and shrubs, bark, bamboo, berries, vines, grass, flowers, nuts, fungi, fruits, vegetables, ferns, and succulent plants.
Threats and predators
The southern pudu is a wonderful creature. But sadly there are only 10,000 of its species left meaning it is endangered. Mostly from hunting, poaching, and illegal collecting for zoos. They also face threats such as; habitat destruction, predation by domestic dogs, and competition with domestic livestock and other exotic deer.
