#archiving is such a problem in games

I was already having a rough day. And this is really sad.

Working on Love Island the Game wasn't always easy in a variety of ways, especially at the end, but even after most of us were laid off amid dramatic circumstances, more than two years ago now, it was nice knowing that some people enjoyed our work that was still out there.

The Season 3 episodes and scenes, and the ones I edited, were my first experiences in a game studio team (shoutout to the scenes with Tai, Rafi, and Lily that were the first pieces of writing I did on the game!). I learned so much from that, from The Wedding, Chelsea's Murder Mystery and The Boat Party, from all the prototypes and ideation that never went anywhere (that wonderful Regency-era Noah art... sigh...), from how the characters and storylines came together for Season 4 aka Bombshell (I loved coming up with the original concepts for Bruno, and Oliver, and Juliet, and Lexi, and Tiffany, and Valentina, and Kobi, and Hazeem: absolute joys to write and to see other writers bringing them extra sparks of life, and to do the same with helping bring other writers' concepts to life, and to start doing all sorts of exciting senior role stuff). It was very sad and stressful when it turned out that we couldn't be there to complete Season 4 in as polished a way as all of us wanted.

I'm still friends with many of the people I worked with on Love Island the Game and our other projects, and the things that didn't end up going out there, and I've worked with some of them since which was an absolute pleasure. I saw a lot of them earlier this month, and chatted with one on a video call just this morning. The way it ended for us was very painful, but a lot of it up to that point was so much fun.

There will still be some of the work I did for Love Island the Game out there in Season 4/Bombshell and Matchmaker. But what a shame that a huge chunk of the work we all did, and the work before my time that got the studio its audience in the first place, turns out to be so ephemeral.

what type of stories do you like to write, and how long have you been writing for?

Currently, my fixation is The Rookie, and most of my stories are Chenford centric. But I also like writing about Tamara and exploring her character more. I often use her to help knock some sense into Lucy and open her up more in my stories. One of the easiest (in terms of how quickly I could write it because the ideas kept flowing) stories I've written was one in which Tamara was raped and had to learn to open herself up and receive support. I also enjoy writing stories where she and Tim bond. There's one I did where Tamara fears she has to move out, and Tim reassures her.

I do also like when The Rookie is airing and I can write fics about missing scenes I wanted to play out.

I started writing in college, but wasn't very good. I've definitely gotten better with age. In 2014, my ex called off our wedding 6 weeks before, and I was of course shattered, as you can imagine. I used that time to get back into fanfiction and for a while was writing Pitch Perfect fanfiction. It was a huge coping mechanism at the time.

But once I got married, my writing died off. I really wasn't inspired again until last year when I discovered AO3 (I used to be a ff.net girlie😅) that I found my muse and started writing again. Feels great to be back into fandom again!

I was tagged by @chadhunkler @archaiclumina and @icehearts for this, ty for the tag! I've seen people post writing snippets for this, but I'm gonna showcase a new oc I've been cooking instead:

meet pelleas myste, a former ishgardian knight that made the mistake of falling in love with a warrior nun who took a lifelong vow of celibacy

since I've reworked tauvane's backstory to something I'm personally satisfied with, I decided to do the inevitable and remake achille's dad entirely to address timeline and consistency issues for the final time, which means any lore I posted about him is now retconned (I'll figure out what to do with takami someday lol)

random wip facts I conjured up for him under the cut:

was an angry and bitter orphan from the brume that managed to eke out a living. he had no immediate family other than pet birds he kept for company

joined the temple knights at 17 to get out of poverty. he proved to be a prodigy and rose through the ranks fairly quickly as a lancer, but he could shoot a bow just as good

sole survivor of a dragon ambush, and his entire unit was killed. he lost his left eye and was grievously injured in the attack

tauvane and her swordsisters arrived too late to save his comrades, but they took pelleas back to their convent in order to save his life. he spent the next few years in recovery, but he was unable to wield a lance as proficiently as he did before the slaughter

had a massive crush on tauvane that lead to him falling in love with her. his relationship with tauvane was slow to take root; tauvane found him insufferable when he was able to walk and talk again. pelleas would tease and irritate tauvane because she was 'as stiff as a corpse' with no sense of humor

tauvane eventually abandoned her vows to run away with him, something that's akin to heresy in the order. they eventually settled in the eastern highlands, started a farm, and had their only child, a boy named achille

pelleas didn't live long; he was executed for heresy—which was false—when achille was still a baby. tauvane fled west with achille to avoid persecution from the order, but in the end she had to give achille to chiron when he accepted a bounty to kill her. tauvane, in her guilt-ridden rage and grief, swore to take revenge against ishgard for taking away the only person who truly loved her. her crusade against the city-state is in pelleas' memory

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Moash picked up a bit of silversmithing from his grandparents before running off to become a caravaneer. For years whenever he saw jewellery he'd admire the craftsmanship, but also how lighteyes treated their accessories vs. darkeyes. He stopped doing this after his grandparents died bc it hurt too much to think about. This also made him hate Elhokar more because now another thing he had in connection with his grandparents had been tarnished. (Pun not intended lmao)

Misfit AU: Desuhiko Thunderbolt

Desuhiko Thunderbolt is one of the younger Master Detectives in the Nocturnal Detective Agency. An outgoing, eccentric detective who aspires to become a superstar. He was the last Detective before Yuma to join the Nocturnal Detective Agency, being the rookie before Yuma takes the position much to his relief. Though he can be problematic at times, he is a capable detective and can be quite intelligent. His Forte is Disguise, where he can literally disguise himself as anyone he meets, but only for a limited time. His detective work mainly focuses on undercover investigations, but does other detective jobs when he wants to (except for homicide cases).

He comes from a well-off, middle-class family in Kamasaki District, attempting to live a quiet and peaceful life in Kanai Ward. Living in such a city though made him a gloomy Shrinking Violet kid who develops struggling self-esteem issues, to the point he would disguise himself just so he can interact with others in a more positive note. This inspires him to become a Master Detective in the WDO while leaving Kanai Ward altogether, especially as Amaterasu and the Peacekeepers were rising in power. While he was training, he takes on a mission where he disguised himself as a Superstar, and he becomes aspired to become a Superstar, while also being a Detective. Unfortunately, that leaves him conflicted with both the WDO and his family, and he is then forced to be stationed in Kanai Ward, much to his disdain. Though despite the setbacks he is dealt with, he will not give up his dreams to become a Superstar Detective and be able to shine on his own outside of Amaterasu’s light.

Do you ever worry that your writing isn't good enough? I'd like to give it a try, but I'm nervous I won't be good at it.

Literally every time I post a new story or chapter!! Do I still write every day? Yes.

It can be terrifying putting your art into the world, but if you have stories you want to be told, you should tell them.

Not all of my stories get as much feedback/interaction as I hope for and I often struggle with comparing myself to other authors. I think everyone (or maybe it is just me, who knows😅) has moments where they think they can do better. But the only way to get better is to keep working at it.

If you're self conscious about your writing skills, I encourage you to do some research. There are both writing in general and specifically fanfiction subs over on Reddit that can answer a ton of questions, and if you Google 'how to write well' there are several websites that can provide tips and tricks on how to improve your writing skills.

And lastly, my DM's are always open. If you do decide to start a story and would like me to proof read it, I'd be more than happy to do so.

i recently bought an old imac g4 and put a hacked os9 district on it for archival gaming purposes, so i relate to your pain.

a g4 mac mini can be useful but audio doesn't work well with the hackadoo OS9 distro

my problem, I think, is that the only apple product I have ever owned is a 6th gen iPod Classic, and I've only ever used a mac:

for work, when the PC was busted and they set up an imac to run powerpoint

in the 90s at my local library

so this is a brand new and very fun experience for me! and it'll happen, but it's going to take a minute for me to figure out xD
