My Journey of Empowerment: Nurturing Others Despite Infertility
Shaina Tranquilino
December 15, 2023
Tumblr media
Life has a way of taking unexpected turns, leading us down paths we never thought we'd tread. For me, the journey of being infertile and not being able to have children has been one filled with both heartbreak and triumph. But despite this challenge, I have found solace and purpose in my career as an early childhood educator and doula. Today, I want to share my story of how these roles have empowered me, allowing me to nurture others even though motherhood may not be a part of my own story.
Finding Fulfillment in Early Childhood Education:
As an early childhood educator, I am blessed with the opportunity to shape young minds and provide them with a solid foundation for their future endeavours. While some may argue that only those who are parents can truly connect with children on a deep level, I believe that love knows no boundaries or biological ties. Every day, as I engage with these little learners, I witness the joy they bring into my life - it's like having hundreds of surrogate children.
Through teaching, storytelling, playtime activities, and fostering learning environments that encourage curiosity and growth, I find immense fulfillment in nourishing their development. The trust they place in me allows me to be their guiding light during this crucial phase of life. Being an early childhood educator enables me to channel my maternal instincts towards helping every child flourish emotionally, intellectually, and socially.
The Empowering Role of a Doula:
While my infertility prevents me from experiencing pregnancy firsthand or giving birth myself, becoming a doula has allowed me to empower women throughout their transformative journey into motherhood. As a doula, I offer support physically and emotionally during pregnancy, labour, and delivery. This role gives me the privilege of witnessing the incredible strength women possess while bringing new life into this world.
By providing guidance on birth plans, offering comfort measures, and serving as an advocate for the mother's wishes, I aim to make this pivotal experience a positive and empowering one. My personal journey with infertility has taught me compassion, empathy, and resilience - qualities that I bring to each birthing experience. Although not being able to have children of my own can be painful at times, helping other women embrace the beauty of childbirth allows me to find solace in nurturing their journeys.
The Hidden Mother Within:
While society may equate motherhood solely with giving birth and raising biological children, I firmly believe that there are many ways to embrace the spirit of motherhood. The love we share, the care we provide, and the impact we make on others' lives are not limited by our ability to conceive or give birth.
Through my work as an early childhood educator and doula, I have come to understand that motherhood is not defined solely by genetics but by the connections we forge and nurture with those around us. Each child who enters my classroom becomes a part of my extended family, while every woman I support during birth becomes a cherished part of my journey towards empowerment.
Infertility may have altered the trajectory of my life in unexpected ways, but it has also led me down a path filled with purpose, fulfillment, and joy. Being an early childhood educator provides me with endless opportunities to shape young minds and nurture their growth. As a doula, I empower women through pregnancy and childbirth journeys they embark upon. Through these roles, I have come to realize that being a "mother" extends far beyond conventional definitions; it encompasses compassion, understanding, and dedication.
Though I may never experience parenthood in the traditional sense, my career choices enable me to leave a lasting impact on countless lives. By embracing the hidden mother within myself, I am reminded that love knows no boundaries - it transcends biology and manifests itself in various forms. And so, I continue to embrace my journey of empowerment, finding solace in knowing that nurturing others is the closest experience I will have to being a mother.

Bessel van der Kolk, a renowned psychiatrist and author of “The Body Keeps the Score,” delves into the idea that individuals can become “addicted” to their trauma and the feelings of helplessness associated with it. This concept sheds light on the profound impact trauma can have on a person’s psyche and behavior, often resulting in complex challenges when trying to overcome its effects. Reacting…

Genuinely, what's wrong with forcemasc on a man who's already transitioned?
You can crack the shell and get a woman to transition to male, but what about after that? At first it feels just like a wedding, he's so excited he went through all that grossness and figured out who he is, he's got support from his friends, he's empowered to fight through all the pushback through this ecstatic haze of existential euphoria. Some parts of it are awful and he's still got quite a bit of anxiety but he's in control and ready to do what he needs to, at least for now. what about after that?
The work and empowerment is easy to start, but hard to continue. Flurries of what-ifs rush in, he has doubts, his anxiety starts to overcome him, he doubts his ability to be a real man so he hides and avoids the gym and spends all of his time on the internet and raises the pitch of his voice around cishets, maybe starts to call himself a soft boy or a golden retriever boy, skips on his testosterone injections because he's afraid of needles. He's got his friends who were once unconditionally supportive suddenly making fun of him for his most minute refuges of masculinity, his messy room, his unshaved face, the way he'll wash his hair with two-in-one shampoo. He tries to fetishize the idea of being a weak, inadequate man as a good thing, trying to accept his current circumstances, so he doesn't have to confront the grating discomfort and frustration of his lust for more, knowing that he wants more and afraid that he won't be able to get it. He wants to be a strong man that people can look at and be safe around. He just doesn't know how, he's lost his way.
In special cases, his sexual fixation projects, also, onto other trans men, those who have gone down the same path. He projects his desire externally like a cinemascope of his unfulfilled ego from inside himself. The kind of man he likes he can't tell if he wants to be, or wants to be inside of. He sees other trans men who have overcome the same adversity and he seethes with discomfort, attraction, lust, jealousy. He thinks it doesn't seem right to see other trans men working blue collar jobs and going to the gym, being dominant and masculine, hell, being on top sexually?? How does that even work?! Trans men can't really be that tough, can they, I mean he can barely even look at himself in the mirror. He's afraid of all the time he's wasted, if he could have truly just taken exactly what he wanted this whole time? All it takes is for the right person to see the potential and use his unfulfilled desires to make him work. He just needs a little push.

hi idk if this has been said but . pls hear my vision… lindsay and noah platonic duo. brains and the beauty. noahs the brains. lindsays the beauty. noahs like “jeez this girl is dumb i cn manipulate her or smth” but then he starts warming up to her and they like paint eachothers nails and talk about boys or somthing idk please theyre besties trust 🤞
(also noah finally gets a makeover courtesy of lindsay)
I think I might've mentioned this exact duo before, though I may be wrong about that. Regardless, I've had Many A Thought about the potential dynamic between Lindsay "reclaiming bimbo as a term of empowerment" and Noah "could be god's biggest hater but was nerfed with an inability to GAF", to the point where I have a few drafts exploring this exact concept.
Through the lens of my eyes (blurry as it would be, my prescription fairly strong), I don't think Noah would ever consider manipulating Lindsay- at least, not in a similar manner to the likes of Heather or Alejandro. He's shown in canon to be pretty adverse to the idea. Why else would he make those comments about Alejandro in "I See London..."?
Not that he doesn't think about how easy it would be to use her. But his morality wins out over his scheming thoughts pretty quickly- no one wants to be New Heather, after all.
However, he's also shown a capacity to explore sneakier options of deception and trickery; pretending to pass out during the 20k run in The Big Sleep, trying to excuse his comment about Alejandro under the guise of it "being a compliment where he's from", tricking the Sasquatch with his fake ball throwing, getting himself eliminated on purpose in Dodgebrawl. I'm trying to think of other examples In Canon off the top of my head, but I'm coming up short since most of his actual speaking lines in the show are 'zingers' and 'witty one-liners' instead of actual character moments.
And we also know, from the way he treats Owen, that he's a lot more patient and indulgent towards the... 'slower' or 'simpler' contestants. He very rarely gets mad at Owen's mistakes- see how he gently chastises him in "Super Happy Crazy Fun Time Japan" when he's disturbing their set, he'd pretty much gentle parenting him, or how he doesn't even raise his voice against Owen after being blasted by nose-shake in "I See London...". You could argue that Owen just has best friend privileges, but given the way he also talks about his dog I think Noah just has a soft spot for happy-go-lucky, heart-of-gold, kind of stupid people (and blondes). Sound familiar?
Lindsay would fall under this umbrella of 'treat with kindness' because of this, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't try to subtly nudge her in the 'right direction'- out of Heather's and/or Alejandro's influence and into his own. For her own safety, of course.
Not that I think he'd even like Lindsay at first. The two of them are opposite ends of the social spectrum; I'd take a while for Lindsay to break through his snarky exterior, but I think eventually Noah would realise that she isn't the 'two-faced airhead popular girl' he'd assumed her to be and quickly warm up to her (she's airheaded, sure, but there's nothing two-faced or nefarious/mean-spirited about Lindsay). It's a classic case of "extrovert adopts introvert".
Meanwhile, Lindsay would be dead-set on breaking Noah out of his sour little shell. Either because she overhears Owen/Izzy/Eva explaining how Noah struggles to make friends because he's "very shy" and "mixes up his insults and his compliments", thus she assumes that, hey, Noah's made fun of her a few times, maybe that was just him trying to be friendly? So she makes it her mission to reciprocate his efforts and befriend him (much to Noah's initial suspicion, and begrudging appreciation).
Or she gets the concept of a 'gay best friend' stuck in her head (an impressive feat, getting anything stuck in such a vacant space /j) probably from watching too many high school teen dramas, and sees Noah as the ideal candidate since he pretty much embodies most of the stereotypical GBF traits; a sassy twink who's defining characteristic is making snarky comments. If Noah ever caught wind of this, he'd either be mortified by the concept and avoid Lindsay like the plague until she'd eventually hunt him down, or he'd think the whole concept is too funny to pass up and gladly play the part- if only for his own amusement. (Personally I headcanon him as bi, but he's so canonically queer coded that he fits the stereotype anyway.)
Which is all just a long-winded way of me saying I think Lindsay would kindle the friendship without giving Noah much of a choice (again, extrovert adopting introvert) and Noah would just go along with it, being the lazy guy he is, and quickly grow fond/protective over her.
If he and Owen are the golden retriever and black cat dynamic, Noah and Lindsay are an afghan hound and a black cat; Noah has a lot of black cat energy (that's just a given) and you cannot tell me that Lindsay isn't an afghan hound- they're pretty, gentle-natured and renown for their low intelligence.
Plus, Lindsay's capacity for meanness (as unintentional as it may be) would be comedy gold to Noah. He'd encourage her to keep that sharp tongue and steel spine, if not for his own entertainment, then to ensure she doesn't become someone else's doormat again. In return, Lindsay would bring out a softer side of Noah, likely a result of her reminding him of his several older sisters.
She'd absolutely abuse her 'soft Noah' privileges too by roping him in on sleepovers where the two of them gossip and paint each other's nails (Noah's against the idea at first but Lindsay hits him with the puppy eyes and he folds like a lawn chair), eventually leading to Lindsay giving Noah a much needed glow up. He finds himself enjoying the pampering- though he'd never admit it- and Lindsay's just ecstatic that she has someone to use as a dress-up doll (Tyler wouldn't let her give him another makeover after Paris).

Urgent news, many lgbtqi residents of kakuma refugee camp are now homeless. Here is a statement from my friend Peter:
As an LGBTQIA+🏳️‍🌈, I bear witness to the horrifying police brutality that unfolded before my very eyes, along with my fellow LGBTQIA+ advocates, freedom fighters, and refugees in Kakuma refugee camp. It was a day we had come together to celebrate our pride, a moment of unity and empowerment during Pride Month. However, what transpired shattered our sense of safety and belonging. In the midst of our joyful pride party, the police forcefully invaded our presence, displaying an alarming disregard for our rights and humanity. Our small tent house, adorned with rainbow flags symbolizing our pride and resilience, was ruthlessly torn down. We, the members of the LGBTQIA+ community, were subjected to brutal beatings by those who are entrusted with the duty to protect us, but who instead exhibited violent, homophobic, and transphobic tendencies. This appalling act served as a stark reminder that within Kakuma refugee camp and Kenya at large, there is no place for us. Even the officials who should be safeguarding our rights have become perpetrators of violence and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ family. We pose no threat, for we bear no weapons and have not inflicted harm upon anyone. Yet, we are continually targeted by the refugee community, subjected to brutality, torture, persecution, discrimination, and social stigma solely due to our sexual orientation and gender identity. The conditions we endure in the camp are unbearable, pushing us to exist in a state of constant fear, insecurity, and suffering. We are forced to live in a primitive and inhospitable environment, stripped of our dignity and denied basic human rights. This relentless adversity places an immense burden on the LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers and refugees in Kakuma refugee camp, compromising our very survival. Therefore, I implore all those who champion human rights and stand against injustice to join forces and provide us with international support. We call upon activists, organizations dedicated to protecting LGBTQIA+ rights and lives, and the global community at large to unite as one, advocating for our freedom from the confines of Kakuma refugee camp. It is evident that this camp will never be a safe haven for us.We desperately need your unwavering support and solidarity. Ignoring our plight is not an option; it is through your intervention and collective efforts that we can secure our liberation. Together, let us work towards a world where every LGBTQIA+ individual can thrive, free from persecution and discrimination. Our lives and well-being depend on it..wish we find your support and solidarity on the less fortunate, thanks
(he sent this to me over whatsapp, you can also find it on his tumblr, @peterkats )
Please share this, spread international outrage, and get them help
The owner of the compound sold it, and many are now homeless. The nearest refugee camps are in Somalia, Zambia, Sudan and South Africa, which are miles away, they have no food or water, and many are sick or injured.
If you can, send aid through World Remit or Send Wave, to the phone number +254712692466, belonging to Abdul Luyombya, a friend of Peter's.

Being someone who is allo (just learned about the existance of this word) and cis, I want to talk about the hot topic of Alastor being shipped romantically and sexually by the fandom of Hazbin Hotel.
I understand that the topic I'm about to delve into may require some patience and open-mindedness. As a young individual seeking understanding, I implore you to hear me out before forming any judgments. English isn't my first language, so I apologize if my expressions seem weird, also it may take a while to get what I am saying here, I took a lot of time to get my point across so please give me a little bit of your time - especially if you are aroace or anywhere among that spectrum.
First of all, being cis and allo is obviously one of the most comfortable shoes you can wear within society. I am aware of that.
For instance, as someone who enjoys immersing myself in various forms of media such as books, movies, and video games, I often find characters and narratives that resonate with my experiences. This familiarity allows me to connect deeply with the stories and derive genuine enjoyment from them. I've never had to grapple with the challenges of feeling unseen or misunderstood in this regard, and for that, I am privileged.
Contrastingly, I recognize the struggles that members of the LGBTQ+ community often face. The need to repeatedly explain one's identity and preferences, the constant battle for visibility and acceptance – these are realities that I've never had to confront personally. My identity has always been accepted without question, and for that, I'm grateful. However, I'm eager to learn and empathize with those whose journeys differ from my own so please try and be patient with me.
To my fellow cisgender and heterosexual individuals who may be unfamiliar with what I'm about to explain: Consider the concept of "comfort characters" and why they hold such significance in our lives. For me, growing up, Katniss Everdeen served as my comfort character. Reflecting on her impact on my childhood development, I realize the profound influence she had. During a time when I was grappling with personal challenges that I wasn't yet ready to confide in my family about, my connection to Katniss provided solace. Through her character, I found the strength to envision myself facing adversity head-on, overcoming obstacles with resilience. It may seem trivial to some, given that she's a fictional creation, but the bond I forged with her played a pivotal role in shaping my identity.
I believe many of us can relate to forming such deep connections with fictional characters as we navigate through the complexities of adolescence and young adulthood. These characters serve as guiding lights, offering solace and inspiration during times of uncertainty. Even if you haven't personally experienced such a connection, I encourage you to consider the profound impact that representation can have on shaping one's sense of self and belonging.
Representation matters because it validates our experiences and identities, providing a sense of visibility and validation that is essential for personal growth and empowerment. Just as we find comfort and inspiration in the characters we admire, so too do marginalized individuals deserve to see themselves reflected in the stories they consume. It's through diverse representation that we foster empathy, understanding, and inclusivity within our communities and society as a whole.
Representation matters because it gives people characters they can relate to and admire. But not every character needs to be relatable for everyone to like them. For instance, I really enjoyed watching the relationship between She-Ra and Catra in the show She-Ra. Even though I'm straight, I can imagine the profound joy it brought to members of the LGBTQ+ community who could see themselves represented in a meaningful way. They relate to those characters differently than I do, and that's totally okay. Sometimes, fans want to see their favorite characters in certain ways, even if it's not exactly how the creators intended them to be. They create their own ideas about the characters to feel a deeper connection. While it's natural to want to connect with characters, it's also important to respect the original story and the creators' intentions.
While it's natural to seek characters with whom we can personally identify, it's equally important to appreciate the diversity of perspectives and experiences that representation brings. It's through this diversity that stories become richer and more inclusive, resonating with a broader audience and fostering empathy and understanding across different communities.
So what does that mean for aroace people when it comes to Alastor?
For this to understand I'm just gonna try and picture myself in a different pair of metaphorical shoes, but when it comes to being ace they may not even feel like shoes at all, but more as if you are running barefoot over the nastiest lego pieces in existance.
Imagine going to a bookstore and struggling to find something that aligns with your tastes. Maybe you spend hours searching, only to come up empty-handed. Perhaps you end up settling for whatever book is popular at the moment, feeling left out because there's no variety that speaks to you. Or maybe you turn to the internet, hoping to find your perfect book match online, but even that proves to be a challenge. In the end, you might resort to reading fanfiction because there, at least, the chances of finding representation are higher.
This struggle isn't limited to books but extends to movies, TV shows, and everything else. Constantly feeling like you don't belong can be painful and isolating. I wouldn't wish that feeling on anyone. Unfortunately, society can't change overnight, so we have to work with what we have for now.
The bottom line is, everyone deserves to see themselves represented in the media they consume. It's not just about personal preference; it's about feeling seen and valued in a world that often overlooks our differences. And until that becomes a reality, we'll keep pushing for change, one step at a time. Finally, there's that one character – in this case, Alastor – and for the first time, asexual individuals can feel that sense of connection I've been talking about. They feel seen and acknowledged, just as we all do when we find something or someone we can relate to. This is what books, TV shows, and video games are all about – providing us with enjoyment and a sense of validation, especially in a world that can be tough.
Representation of diverse sexualities in media isn't just important for LGBTQ+ individuals; it's beneficial for everyone. It helps broaden our understanding of each other and breaks down barriers without anyone having to change who they are to fit in. This is the power of art and the stories we consume – they have the ability to blur the lines between people and foster greater empathy and acceptance. Ultimately, it's about making everyone feel like they belong and have a place in the world.
I'll be honest – I don't really think about labels much anymore. I've found that they can sometimes divide people even further, which isn't what I'm about. It's not that I have anything against labels in general; I just personally don't dwell on them. However, I do recognize the subtle influence they can have on me, even though I consider myself quite open-minded.
I've come to a point where I've found peace in the idea that everyone should just be allowed to be themselves, as long as they're happy. I didn't actively choose to be straight; it's just who I am. And I don't expect anyone else to have to "choose" their sexuality either – they should just be able to exist and be happy. I've reached a mindset where I don't really give much thought to someone's sexuality when I see it portrayed in media. They're just who they are, and I'm just who I am. But I understand that for many people, having those labels is important for representation and visibility. Perhaps, initially, society needs those divisions in order for certain groups to feel seen and acknowledged. And while I may not personally identify with those labels, I can still appreciate their significance to others. At the end of the day, it's about acceptance and understanding, regardless of labels.
Returning to the topic of Alastor, now that there's this ace character, the fandom takes him and sometimes decides to change him to fit their own desires. It's similar (I guess) to the disappointment some feel when an author keeps a protagonist's appearance vague, only for fans to imagine them as the perfect, conventionally beautiful princess. This can be hurtful to people who don't fit that idealized image because they ask themselves "would the story be any different if she would be smaller, or chubby, or (insert whatever you want)?"
What's crucial to recognize here is that some fans might struggle to accept Alastor's sexuality because they feel like he has to be different for them to enjoy certain content without feeling guilty or needing to justify their actions. Our minds often try to protect us with such a mindset so we can feel good about ourselves and our choices. For some, that means trying to impose their beliefs on a character so they can comfortably engage with them in their own fanworks.
It's important to acknowledge that everyone interprets and engages with media differently. However, it's also important to respect the creator's original intentions and the representation they've provided. Trying to change a character to fit one's own desires can be disrespectful to both the character and those who identify with them.
Ultimately, it's about finding a balance between creative freedom and respecting the integrity of the source material.
Here are two key considerations that both sides should bear in mind, (if I even have the right to say anything as someone who is clearly underqualified when it comes to topics like that as a cis and allo):
On one hand, it's important for ace individuals to understand that people often enjoy engaging with characters in various ways, including through shipping and fanfiction. Characters may take on different traits or orientations in these creative outlets, and that's part of the fun and freedom of fan culture. However, when it comes to representation in canon material, it's crucial not to impose personal viewpoints onto characters solely for the sake of recognition. While it's acceptable to explore different interpretations in fan works, it's essential to respect the original portrayal of characters, particularly regarding their sexuality.
Reflecting on my own feelings on this matter, I've realized that I don't necessarily take issue with individuals changing the sexual orientation of straight characters in fanfiction. However, I become uncomfortable when there's an attempt to forcefully alter the canonical identity of a character. This discomfort arises from a sense that being straight is portrayed as incorrect or undesirable. This realization has deepened my empathy for the struggles faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community in seeking authentic representation in media.
This also brings me to the main point – the same principle applies to ace individuals when the community tries to forcefully change a character's sexuality, refusing to acknowledge their ace identity as portrayed in the show. Finally, ace individuals have a character to look up to who is even quite popular, only to see that representation invalidated or ignored because some people refuse to accept it – essentially, refusing to see them.
This kind of rejection can make ace individuals feel as though they need to conform to certain expectations in order to be considered "interesting" or "popular," just like Alastor. It's confusing and disheartening to see a character's identity denied or dismissed, especially when it's a rare instance of representation that could provide validation and visibility for ace individuals.
It would be VERY confusing for me, making me feel like, despite getting represented, I would not be enough.
I'd like to take a moment to clarify that while I enjoy engaging in fan works involving Alastor - some even portraying him romantically or sexually with another character, I wouldn't want him to be portrayed differently in the series. Changing his character in the serie itself in such a fundamental way would completely ruin the essence of who he is for me, much like what happened with characters such as Wednesday, Sherlock, or Loki. Despite my love for these characters, I felt that some of them should have remained as they were without delving into romantic or sexual storylines, as it would feel out of place, just as it would feel strange to me if Alastor suddenly showed romantic or sexual interest in anyone.
It's important to recognize that enjoying fan works doesn't necessarily mean wanting to alter the original outcome of the show or the character themselves. Sometimes, it's just for fun, without any deeper implications.
I don't have a definitive conclusion or a perfect solution to make everything peaceful – I'm not sure such a thing even exists. However, I believe that listening to each other and trying to understand one another, despite our differences, is crucial. I can only imagine how deeply hurtful it must be for ace individuals to see so much fan art of Alastor that conflicts with his established sexual orientation, but recognizing it as people having fun and drawing a line between canon and fanon is as important as it is for those who engage in such content to understand why ace individuals might feel upset about it, and to recognize that their feelings are just as valid.
We need to communicate with each other respectfully and without hostility.
I'm open to listening to anyone who might feel offended by anything I've written here – my goal in sharing these thoughts is simply to foster understanding and empathy. I never wanted to hurt anyone with my words, sorry in advance if someone feels triggered because of this.

Hi,I've recently discovered your blog and I Iove it.
I would like to know if you have any predictions regarding the second season of HotD. Do you think that the pessimistic attitude of many show watchers, especially TG fans, is warranted? Imho, if anything could irreversibly harm the greens is Rha*nicent. Not the ship itself, but the way the showrunners seem incapable of letting that ship sink after the time skip and are pushing it even after everything that has happened in season 1. Idk, the mere possibility of Alicent betraying her family and forsaking her children in any way to ingratiate herself to Rhaenyra is so illogical and outrageous, especially after B&C. The thing is, I'm almost certain that we are going to see a lot of Rha*nicent in the following season in some form and it could really irreparably ruin not only Alicent's character, but the greens in general. And, ofc, the show. What's your opinion about this and do you have any other predictions regarding the future seasons?
Thanks in advance :)
First of all, thank you, anon! 🌞🙏🌻
Preferences aside, I just think that white feminism sells in media. It manifests in tropes such as girlboss narratives (I know everyone is tired of this word by now), women warriors, female sexuality relayed through a male gaze-ish lens, overcoming adversity in an easily digestible way, scoring against some obviously misogynistic obstacle, framed in a way that appeals to a basic sense of justice etc. Lots of female characters that became popular in the last 15 years embody some of those markers, from Natasha Romanov to Katniss Everdeen to Arya Stark to Lagertha. And they're not even necessarily ~bad things~ or elements we shouldn't ever have in our fiction, it's just that this kind of tried-and-tested formula is what film executives think will bring them easy popularity and quick money.
Daenerys was such a hugely popular character that that it's to be expected (in this capitalistic hellscape we live in) that it would make monetary sense for HBO to try and recreate a straightforward empowerment narrative with the character of Rhaenyra. On paper, she has all the superficial storyline elements that could be converted into a blockbuster: powerful in some badass way (she is a competent dragon-rider), is A Rebel, owns her sexuality by sleeping with whomever she wants, which translates into 21st century mentality as empowerment, and has to overcome an obstacle posed by The Man.™ All wrapped up in a nostalgic package that reminds viewers of their beloved Daenerys.
So, unfortunately, I expect them to continue to build on these marketable points instead of focusing too much on finesse details, such as how Rhaenyra's already immense privilege and power as a princess of the Realm and a dragon-rider negatively impact those around her, how she can be both victim and perpetrator, how she perpetuates the cycles of violence and abuse + her less than palatable traits. Certainly, I'm not going to stand here and declare that they WON'T touch on those aspects either, before even watching the new season, because that would be silly. I DO expect them to address at least some of those issues and I'm sure there will be many moments which I will enjoy and even scenes that will be well-crafted explorations into certain questions. I do like this show a lot, at the end of the day, and will probably love S2, as well.
But, overall, I can't say hand-on-heart that the marketable concerns won't prevail in the end either, and I expect the framing to fall in the direction of "yeah, she did some bad stuff, too, but ultimately Rhaenyra had the right of it and was Betrayed by power-hungry woman-hating misogynists". Which does get frustrating in this media climate, because it is essentially the same message being delivered without much nuance or refinement: women* can't ever be wrong, anything a woman does is automatically great and should be supported, all delusions are valid if they're produced by a woman etc. I hope to be proven wrong, but only time will tell. Which is not to say that we should go back to making pro-patriarchy and pro-gender roles stories, which is kind of the vibe I'm sometimes getting from some "anti-woke" HotD critical pieces. An intersectional HotD - is that possible? At least a little class commentary on these people.
(*Of course, this only applies if the character fits into, what essentially is, another type of Ideal Woman: the acceptable amount of progressivism deemed appropriate at the current time, with the acceptable attitudes and interests. But that's a discussion for another day.)
So this is where rhaenicent falls for me. I've always thought it was an interesting addition and the change never bothered me, but there is a certain point at which it becomes unbalanced and, as you say, illogical. When is love ever "logical", though, you might question? Well, I think the prospect of losing your children + grandchildren + father + brother vs holding on to an unrequited lifelong crush might knock some sense into someone. Realistically speaking, the vast majority of people would nope out of that equation and the choice would be clear. How much can you truly love a person at the expense of literally your entire family? (including your extended family, because the Hightowers in Oldtown risked their lives for King Aegon). The reward is also so small, what exactly would Alicent be trading for? Yearning gazes and holding hands? Rhaenyra has not exactly been shown to reciprocate these feelings post Alicent's marriage to Viserys.
I think that the showrunners are holding onto this aspect because they're trying to make Alicent sympathetic to the general public, who are mostly on Rhaenyra's side, as a result of the show's framing. So their logic is that the viewers won't hate Alicent as much if she displays how sorry she is for everything, how reluctant, how much she loves Rhaenyra. And they think that her contradictory actions are a fair trade-off. So I do expect us to get more rhaenicent in the coming seasons.
All in all, this wouldn't be so bad, because indeed it could be framed as very romantic, a lot of pathos, star-crossed lovers etc and human emotions are messy and complicated. Our desires can often be contradictory in nature. Literature and mythology are filled with passionate love stories that defy all rhyme or reason. Doesn't Jaime tell Cersei he would kill every single person in the world for her? I just hope it'll get the presentation it deserves, delving into the complicated nature of love and difficult choices, and not turn into "Alicent would sell out her kids to save Rhaenyra from her self-inflicted predicament, all the while Rhaenyra is not sparing her a single thought or concern".

As an hour passes, the cold storm outside shows no signs of relenting, but the estate’s staff works diligently to pack all of the family’s belongings. The once lively halls and rooms now echo with the sounds of moving furniture and the rustling of packing materials. The assistant butlers and housemaids, dressed in their respective uniforms, carefully covered the estate’s elegant furniture with white cloth to protect it from dust and damage before the journey back home. Each item is treated with care, as they take pride in their responsibility to maintain the family’s valuable possessions. Outside, the carriages are being loaded with the family’s luggage and belongings. The head coachman ensures that everything is securely tied down, ready for the journey. Despite the storm’s fury, the carriages are sturdy, built to withstand such adverse weather conditions.
The viscountess observes the commotion from the comfort of the drawing-room, sipping her tea with a nonchalant air. She pays little attention to the bustling activity around her, confident that everything will be taken care of by the staff. Once the packing is complete, the staff members gather in the foyer, ready to depart. They exchange nods and smiles, a silent camaraderie built over years of service to the family. With the signal from the head butler, the carriages begin to move, one by one, making their way through the estate’s grand gates. The storm’s fury seems to intensify as they set off, but the staff remains undeterred. They have faced such challenges before and know how to navigate through the worst of weather.
As the carriages disappear into the distance, the estate returns to its quiet state. The wind howls outside, but inside, the silence is almost deafening. The staff members who remain behind continue with their duties, cleaning and tidying up, ensuring that the estate is left in impeccable condition until the family’s return.
As you sit in the carriage, you seize the chance to delve into the world of finance with the book you found in the library. The intricate details and insights about managing wealth, investments, and economic principles captivate your attention. The gentle sway of the carriage and the rhythmic clattering of hooves create a soothing atmosphere, perfect for deepening your understanding. Across from you, Emily, your devoted maid, is sound asleep, her head gently nodding with the carriage’s movement. You smile fondly at her, grateful for her presence and the peaceful ambiance of the journey.
The soft glow of the carriage’s lanterns illuminates the pages of the book, and you immerse yourself in the world of finance, eager to grasp every bit of knowledge you can find. The concepts and figures start to connect in your mind, and you feel a growing sense of empowerment. Unaware of the changing scenery outside, you lose track of time, completely absorbed in your reading. The storm’s intensity begins to wane, and the carriage continues its journey toward your official estate. The calmness that matches your tranquility replaces the wildness of the storm.
With each passing moment, you feel a deeper sense of accomplishment and excitement about the knowledge you have gained. As you approach your official estate, you carefully mark your progress in the book, promising to continue your study later. The carriage comes to a stop, and you step out with renewed energy, feeling ready to apply your newfound understanding of finance to your family’s affairs. Emily stirs awake and smiles warmly at you, knowing that you’ve been on another intellectual adventure.
The hustle and bustle of returning home resumes as the storm subsides, and you join in with enthusiasm. Equipped with the knowledge from the book, you know you can play a more active role in managing your family’s wealth and securing its future.
As the estate comes back to life, you look forward to the opportunities and challenges that await you. With Emily by your side, you feel confident and prepared to face whatever lies ahead, knowing that your journey of self-improvement and knowledge has only just begun.

In the Eastern region of the kingdom of Gran Tesoria, Prince Geno sits in his study room, surrounded by the opulence befitting a royal. The room exudes an air of elegance, adorned with rich tapestries and fine artworks. The soft glow of the candles illuminates the space as he carefully works on his latest creation - a face portrait of you. His heart dances with a mix of emotions as he dips the brush into vibrant colors and expertly captures the essence of your beauty on canvas. Your image seems to come alive with each stroke, reflecting the captivating aura you possess. He never imagined that attending the gala would lead him to fall so deeply in love with a woman, especially you.
As he paints, memories of the gala flood his mind - the enchanting moment when he first saw you across the ballroom, your eyes alight with grace and intelligence. Your dance together was a whirlwind of emotions, and he can still feel the warmth of your hand in his, the softness of your laughter echoing in his heart.
The prince’s thoughts drift to the conversation you shared, your wit and charm leaving a lasting impression on him. He was captivated by your confidence, intelligence, and compassion. In that fleeting moment, he knew he wanted to know you more, to be by your side and explore the depths of your soul.
As he continues to paint, he can’t help but feel a mixture of excitement and anxiety. He wonders if you feel the same way about him, if you share the same intense connection that he’s experiencing. The uncertainty of it all leaves him restless, but he’s determined to find a way to get to know you better.
His fingers gently trace the brushstrokes on the canvas, almost as if he’s touching your very essence. The more he paints, the more he realizes how much he adores you, and the desire to make you his becomes an undeniable force within him.
Finally, as the portrait takes shape, he steps back to admire his work. The likeness is striking, capturing your essence with astonishing accuracy. A sense of contentment washes over him, but it is also accompanied by a longing to be with you again. As the night grows darker, he carefully sets the portrait aside and decides that he will find a way to see you once more. With renewed determination, he starts making plans to return to the social scene, to be in your presence, and to unravel the mystery of the emotions that have taken root in his heart.

Back in the duke’s estate, the duke finds solace within the confines of his study room. The harsh winds of the storm outside seem to mirror the turmoil within his heart. He lies on his back, the cold floor beneath him grounding his thoughts and emotions.
This simple act of lying on the floor brings a sense of comfort, reminiscent of his childhood. It’s a familiar sanctuary he turns to when the weight of the world becomes too heavy to bear. With closed eyes, he listens to the howling wind that rattles the windows and whistles through the cracks, as if it echoes the chaos of his thoughts.
As he lies there, memories of the past and worries about the future play like a reel in his mind. The recent encounters at the gala replay in his thoughts - the dance with you, the unexpected interaction with Prince Geno, and the rush of jealousy that had taken him by surprise. He contemplates the choices he’s made, the responsibilities he carries, and the challenges that lie ahead. The storm outside becomes a metaphor for his own inner struggles, the torrent of emotions and uncertainties that rage within him.
But even in the midst of this tempest, lying on the floor brings him a sense of clarity. The coldness seeping into his back provides a grounding touch, as if reminding him of his strength and resilience. The rhythmic sound of his own breathing aligns with the howling wind, creating a kind of meditative rhythm that soothes his restless thoughts. Time seems to pass slowly as he lies there, finding solace in the simplicity of the moment. The storm outside begins to ebb, and he feels a subtle shift within himself as well. The tumultuous emotions he had been grappling with start to settle, and a sense of determination takes their place.
With a deep inhale, he pushes himself up from the floor, his muscles protesting the movement after being still for so long. As he stands, he feels a renewed sense of purpose. The storm may have rattled his world, but he’s ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead with the same resilience that has carried him through countless trials before.
In the midst of the estate’s settling quietness, the door to the study creaks open, and in walks the duke’s close friend, Ace. With an air of familiarity, he enters as if he owns the place. He offers a warm smile, though there’s a hint of concern in his eyes. “Hey there,” Ace greets, his tone carrying both friendship and curiosity. His gaze narrows slightly as he assesses the duke’s expression. “How’s your father holding up?” The duke looks up, his face a mixture of fatigue and determination. He appreciates Ace’s genuine concern, and it brings a small sense of comfort amid his worries. “He’s not doing well,” he replies with a heavy sigh. “The doctor says there’s nothing more they can do. It’s just a matter of time now.”
Ace’s features soften as he listens, his empathy clear. “I’m really sorry to hear that, man,” he says sincerely, his voice laced with sympathy. As their conversation continues, another presence enters the study. It’s the duke’s younger sister, her arms carefully cradling a stack of books. Her expression is a mix of excitement and trepidation as she approaches, clearly interrupting an important exchange between her brother and his friend. “Sorry to barge in,” she begins, her voice carrying a trace of both apology and enthusiasm. “I just thought I’d return these books to you.” Her gaze flickers between the two men as she offers a sheepish smile.
The duke’s lips quirk into a small smile as he takes the books from her hands. “Thanks,” he replies, his voice softening in her presence. Despite the heaviness of the situation, her arrival brings a hint of lightheartedness to the room. Ace leans back in his chair, his easy going demeanor not fading even in this somber setting. “Well, I’ll let you two siblings catch up,” he says, pushing himself up from the chair. “Let me know if you need anything, alright?”
The duke nods appreciatively, and as Ace leaves the room, his sister takes a seat nearby, her eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and concern. They fall into an easy conversation, sharing memories, thoughts, and even a few fleeting smiles. In this moment of shared connection, the heaviness of their current situation momentarily lifts, reminding them of the bond that has always been there.
As the day continues, the estate gradually returns to a sense of normalcy, each member of the family finding solace in their own way, whether it’s in the company of a friend, the embrace of a familiar study, or the warmth of shared memories. And in the quiet corners of the estate, they find the strength to face the challenges that lie ahead for them.
———
As the day transitions to night, the fierce cold storm outside gives way to a snowstorm that blankets the surroundings in a pristine white layer. Inside the viscount’s chambers, the soft glow of candlelight flickers, casting a warm and comforting ambience in contrast to the wintry scene beyond the windows. With dinner approaching, he stands before a tall mirror, meticulously adjusting his attire for the evening’s gathering.
As he arranges his clothes and checks his appearance, his gaze lingers on the reflection staring back at him. His normally composed features bear the faint traces of emotion—a subtle puffiness around his eyes and a slightly reddened nose. It’s a telling sign of a recent emotional upheaval, a side of himself he rarely exposes. The viscount takes a moment to contemplate this unexpected vulnerability he experienced earlier in the day. The image of his father, frail and ailing, stirred within him a deep well of emotions that he typically keeps hidden beneath his stern exterior. The weight of his responsibilities and the impending loss of a beloved parent had brought forth tears that were uncharacteristic of his usual demeanor.
His fingers absently smooth the fabric of his attire as he revisits the memory. He acknowledges the complexity of his feelings—the love he holds for his father, the weight of his obligations, and the sense of helplessness that often accompanies the approaching end of a life. It’s a rare glimpse into the viscount’s private struggles, a moment when his guarded walls were momentarily breached. With a steadying breath, he brings his thoughts back to the present, his expression regaining its customary composure. As he turns away from the mirror, he’s resolved to face the evening’s social interactions with the same level of authority and control that he’s known for. His inner turmoil remains his own, hidden beneath the veneer of a viscount’s poise.
Leaving his chambers, he moves through the elegantly appointed hallways of the estate, each step a testament to his steadfast determination. The grand dining room awaits, filled with family and extended family members who seek his guidance and assurance. As he enters the warm glow of the dining area, he takes his place at the head of the table, ready to fulfill his role as the head of the family.
As the viscount settled into his seat at the dining table, his youngest son Ellis and daughter Elsie greeted him with a semblance of respect, which quickly faded into their true colors. It was a disheartening sight, a stark reminder of the influence his wife, the viscountess, had on their behavior. Ellis wasted no time in voicing his complaints about his personal tailor’s inability to meet his standards, fixating on trivial matters. “Father,” he whined picking at his crisp sleeves, “I believe it’s time to consider dismissing that tailor. This isn’t acceptable.” The viscount’s patience wore thin. “Ellis,” he replied sternly, “your tailor’s expertise is not in question. Learn to manage your expectations and treat those around you with respect.”
On the other side of the table, Elsie engaged in taunting her younger relatives, much to the viscount’s dismay. Her behavior mirrored the influence of her mother’s actions, causing a growing sense of concern within him. He met her eyes and addressed her with a firm tone, “Elsie, such conduct does not befit a young lady of our family.” Both Ellis and Elsie seemed undeterred, muttering under their breath in defiance. The viscount couldn’t help but feel a sense of sorrow for his children, realizing that they were trapped in the wake of their mother’s detrimental behavior. Throughout the meal, the viscount’s gaze shifted from family member to family member. Observing the nuances of their interactions, he couldn’t ignore the weight of their strained relationships and the disheartening influences that seemed to have seeped in.
As the dinner progressed, more meals arrived and conversation continued, the viscount surprisingly remained seated, his demeanor contemplative. He watched as his children displayed behaviors that were all too familiar, a reflection of the corrosive impact of his wife’s actions. Regret for not intervening sooner swelled within him, knowing that the damage done could have been mitigated with earlier recognition. Amid the chatter and clinking of utensils, the viscount found himself lost in thought. He contemplated the path his family had taken, the dynamics at play, and the necessary steps to rectify the situation. Resolute, he made a silent promise to himself to address these issues head-on, for the sake of his family’s well-being and their future.
You entered the room, your presence not escaping anyone’s attention. Unbeknownst to you, you took a seat near your stepmother’s side of the family. This particular branch of the family was known for their snobbishness and flamboyant behavior, each member seemingly having an unexplained issue with you. Taking your place at the table, you settled into one of the end chairs, the events of the day surely occupying your thoughts. The tension around you was palpable, and you felt the weight of their gazes upon you. Ignoring the unspoken judgments, you focused on the meal set before you.
However, any attempt at a peaceful evening was shattered as the viscountess seized the opportunity to make a cutting remark about your tardiness. The comment landed like a subtle but targeted attack, the intention behind it not lost on anyone present. Yet, before the viscountess could revel in her satisfaction, the viscount’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. “Y/n’s arrival time does not warrant a comment,” he stated calmly, his tone betraying the depths of his annoyance. His defense of you was unequivocal, a testament to the importance he held for his daughter’s dignity.
The viscountess’s features contorted in response, her forced smile crumbling into a mask of frustration. The direct confrontation from her husband was unexpected, a reminder of the complex dynamics that existed beneath the surface of their marriage.
The viscountess’s reply to his defense came quickly, laced with a passive-aggressive tone that sliced through the tension in the room. Her words tested his patience, and a bitter exchange of comments and arguments ensued, like a verbal fencing match where both were trying to land a decisive blow. “Is it surprising that she’s late?” she quipped, her lips curling into a condescending smile. “After all, she seems to prefer the company of those above her station.” The viscount’s jaw clenched, his fingers tightening around his utensils. “Enough of your insinuations,” he retorted, his tone icy. “Oh, don’t act so high and mighty,” she shot back, her gaze cutting. “It’s not like your own choices have been much better.”
The atmosphere grew increasingly charged as the words flew back and forth between them. The viscountess’s comments were like carefully aimed arrows, each designed to hit their mark and provoke a reaction. The viscount, usually composed, found his patience wearing thin with every word that left her lips. “Perhaps it’s time you remember your place,” she hissed, her voice dripping with disdain. He leaned forward, his voice like a steel blade. “I’d advise you to watch your words.” However, the viscountess’s misstep came when she made a distasteful comment about his deceased wife, the original viscountess. The room seemed to freeze for a moment as her words hung in the air, a line crossed that should never have been breached. “Your dear departed wife must be rolling in her grave to see what you’ve become—” she taunted, a triumphant smirk on her face. In the next instant, the viscount’s restraint shattered like fragile glass. His open palm connected with her cheek in a sharp slap, the sound echoing through the dining room. The viscountess’s hand flew to her reddening cheek, her expression a mix of shock and indignation.
Gasps filled the room as the guests exchanged surprised glances. The atmosphere had shifted from tense to explosive in mere seconds. “I’ve had enough!” His voice thundered through the room, a rare display of his simmering anger boiling over. The viscount’s eyes blazed with an intensity that could no longer be contained, his control shattered by her callous words. “The audacity you’ve shown tonight is astounding!” he continued, his voice carrying a mixture of anger and disappointment.
The guests around the table fell into stunned silence, their eyes fixed on the unfolding scene. The air was thick with a mix of shock, discomfort, and a long-held tension that had finally erupted into the open.
As your father ignores your stepmother’s sudden departure, you attempt to break the suffocating silence that has settled over the dining room. The strained atmosphere hangs heavy, and your question is like a lifeline, reaching out for a hint of normalcy amidst the tension. “Father,” you begin, your voice carrying a hint of nervousness, “did you have a good time at the gala?” Surprisingly, your father’s attention shifts from his plate to you. His expression softens, and it’s a rare sight to see – his defenses momentarily lowered, a glimpse of the warmth he rarely shows.
A small, genuine smile tugs at his lips, and his gaze meets yours. It’s as if your question has managed to pull him back from the brink of the emotional maelstrom that erupted just moments ago. “Yes, my dear,” he replies, his voice sincere and warm. “I did have a good time at the gala. Your presence made it all the more enjoyable.” His words hang in the air, a fragile bridge between you two. In this fleeting moment, the weight of the recent confrontation seems to lift, replaced by a shared connection. The viscount’s words remind you that beneath the layers of complexity and family dynamics, there’s still a bond that endures.
Your own smile mirrors his, your heart lifting at the genuine affection he’s showing. In this instant, the tension that had pervaded the room dissipates, replaced by a sense of reconciliation, however fragile it might be. As the dinner carries on, your father’s gaze occasionally drifts to you, an unspoken acknowledgment of the connection you’ve rekindled. The strained atmosphere has shifted, replaced by a tentative truce, a momentary ceasefire.
At this moment, you can’t help but wonder about your father’s thoughts. You sense that his decision to confront the troubles in his marriage is both daunting and necessary. The warmth he’s allowed himself to show, the genuine affection he’s shared with you – they’re reminders that there’s more at stake than pride and appearances. And as the dinner draws to a close, your thoughts linger on this fragile yet significant moment. It’s a glimmer of hope amidst the complexities of your family’s dynamics, a reminder that there’s still a chance for understanding and connection.
————-
Fueled by anger and embarrassment, the viscountess paces through the grand hallway with a determined stride. Her emotions swirl within her, a volatile mix of wounded pride and seething resentment. The sting of the public humiliation she endured at the dining table fuels her urgency, driving her to seek solace in the arms of her clandestine lover. The maids in her path scatter as she passes, sensing her stormy demeanor and unwilling to be caught in her wake. Her hands tremble slightly, betraying the depth of her emotions that she struggles to contain beneath her outward facade of pride. It’s clear that her confrontation with the viscount had rattled her more than she would admit.
Reaching her chambers, she doesn’t waste a moment. She summons her personal maid with an impatient flick of her wrist, her voice laced with an undeniable edge. Her orders are concise and brisk – a few select garments must be packed, and a carriage must be readied for her immediate departure. The personal maid hurries to fulfill her mistress’s wishes, moving with practiced efficiency to gather the requested items and prepare for the viscountess’s imminent departure. There’s a sense of urgency in the air, as if the viscountess’s emotions are a storm that demands immediate release.
As the room bustles with preparations, the viscountess’s mind is consumed by her lover, Lord Doflamingo. He’s the anchor to her emotions, the one who listens to her grievances and offers the adoration she craves. In him, she finds a sanctuary from the stifling world of the estate, a secret haven where she can be herself without judgment. With her personal maid scurrying around the room, gathering her belongings, the viscountess’s thoughts are a jumble of resentment, anger, and anticipation. Her plans are set – she will seek Lord Doflamingo’s comfort, sharing her side of the confrontation, basking in the adoration he showers upon her. It’s a dangerous dance she’s entwined in, one that threatens to unravel the delicate fabric of her marriage.
As the viscountess readies herself to depart, the carriage awaits, a symbol of her escape from the turmoil that festers within her. She steps into it with a mixture of determination and apprehension, her heart heavy with the weight of her choices. The carriage departs, carrying the viscountess away into the night, leaving behind a mansion steeped in tension and secrets. The aftermath of the confrontation still lingers, a testament to the fractures that run deep within the family’s foundation. In the silence that follows her departure, the estate seems to hold its breath, as if bracing for the inevitable storm that will come when the truth finally emerges. And within the walls of the grand residence, each member of the family is left to grapple with their own emotions and the consequences of their actions.

Mayor Eric Adams’ administration is promoting reparations in a bid to curb health and wealth disparities of black New Yorkers — but the effort is being met with accusations that it’s “sowing racial divisiveness,” The Post has learned.
The proposal for federal reparations is spelled out in a bombshell report from the city’s Department of Health and the Federal Reserve Bank entitled “Analyzing the Racial Wealth Gap and Implications for Health Equity.”
“The goal of a [federal] reparations program would be to seek acknowledgment, redress, and closure for America’s complicity in federal, state, and local policies … that have deprived black Americans of equitable access to wealth and wealth-building opportunities,” the report said.
The city’s Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan and his team offered three key recommendations including: a fresh approach to public health policy, how to improve data collections on wealth and health outcomes and getting the community more involved with health care decisions.
But moderate and conservative politicians opposed to reparations accused Adams’ health minions of turning into ideologues and social justice activists instead of doing their jobs.
“Add reparations and sowing racial divisiveness to the list of greatest policy hits by Commissioner Vasan’s and his health department, right alongside the crack pipe vending machine, heroin ‘empowerment’ signs on subways, firing unvaccinated city workers, supporting government drug dens; and banning unvaccinated kids from sports,” fumed Council Republican Minority Leader Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island).
The New York legislature approved a commission to address economic, political and educational disparities by black people in June and follows the lead of California, which became the first state to form a reparations task force in 2020.
New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, the first black person to hold the position, called the legislation “historic.”
Adams has previously expressed support for the commission which is awaiting Hochul’s signature.
“We have consistently brought together experts to discuss a variety of ideas to promote equity in our city and we will continue to do so,” said the Health Department’s spokesman.
“We have an obligation to help New Yorkers lead longer, healthier lives.”
As with most progress in this system, we have to first inspect its ongoing involvement in pro enslavement systems. Not only did the historical ties to the Trans-Atlantic-slave trade leave on going structural residual connections that linger in our society today, it continues to exist in the 13th amendment's clause: slavery illegal unless a crime was found on you. That "unless" aspect made it essentially persist as is under the guise of hyper-criminalization at a system level. This has had adverse, negative effect on everyone including the environment. These are facts that can be proven. Not just social justice counter points. Besides, we are literally (regardless of what we say about it) immersed in politics and social justice through our lived social experiences. Claiming "the social justice advocates are the issue for pointing out what exists" is not helpful and adds to the lack of communal education required to understand these things. We need problack proindigenx reperations and restituion.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Watercolor design. The front of a green station wagon driving through the bleak cold Appalachia mountains lined with naked trees, a portly pastor with red hair and beard at the wheel, a teenager with a pink pixie cut smoking a cigarette in the passenger seat, a male teen in the back looking anxious and a female teen with a unibrow scrolling through her phone. [END OF IMAGE DESCRIPTION]
AUTHOR'S NOTE: If you're a fellow bookworm, you know the story you live is extremely contingent on the stories you read. How often do queer/trans/nonbinary kids see themselves as the heroes in the stories they live, much less read? Recently, I put the finishing touches on my first ever manuscript, a young adult LGBTQIA+ mystery-thriller: MY TEETH BECOME WEAPONS. If you are an avid storyteller, chances are it's because you're an avid story reader. With my sights on LGBTQIA+ literature, I see tremendous benefits in stories that romanticize the mundane and the ordinary things in queer, trans, or nonbinary characters's lives and we have been gifted some remarkable stories in that regard.
But MY TEETH BECOME WEAPONS is anything but mundane as the circumstances currently befalling queer and trans kids in our country are anything but. The story involves a pan teen boy living in rural Tennessee named Ilya slowly learning the reality of bigotry and corruption in his environment, and he must decide if taking a stand in the face of adversity and status quo is worth risking not only his safety, but the safety of his family and friends. The story takes a white-knuckled and unapologetic byway through themes of queerness, gender, conversion therapy, religion, politics, mental health, and friendship. In the wake of countless anti-LGBTQIA+ and book-banning bills, MY TEETH BECOME WEAPONS is just as unwavering in its stance on LGBTQIA+/BIPOC empowerment as the adolescent and immature characters it tells the pulse-pounding tale of. Until it's ready to hit the shelves, I'll keep you posted on its journey to your hands.

COURAGE ABOVE FEAR • Overcoming
The act of putting courage above fear can manifest in various aspects of life, from everyday decisions to extraordinary circumstances. It could be as simple as speaking in a public setting, trying a new activity, or as monumentous as standing up for one’s beliefs in the face of adversity. When people prioritize courage, they are essentially deciding to not let fear control their lives or dictate their actions., which can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic existence. Putting courage over fear is an empowering principle that involves acknowledging fear yet choosing to act despite it. The concept is not about the absence of fear, but rather the ability to overcome it through mental fortitude, strength and resolve. Courage is not a static trait, but a muscle that can be strengthened over time with practice and experience. The cycle of facing fears and taking action builds resilience, confidence and self esteem, contributing to personal growth and the ability to handle future, perhaps more daunting, challenges. Courage can be seen as a balanced approach to fear- one that assesses but does not surrender to it. It involves thoughtful consideration of the situation, understanding possible challenges, then making a reflective decision. Be careful not to recklessly disregard all risks. This transformative approach can lead to achieving a profound sense of accomplishment and empowerment. It is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to transcend limitations and peruse a life of meaning and purpose. Courage involves recognizing your fears and choosing to move through it regardless of the discomfort. It’s the determination to act in alignment with your values and your goals, even when faced with danger and uncertainty. It is a critical quality that enables one to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and grow beyond perceived limitations. It is the quality that supports standing up for what is right, attempting new endeavors, and persisting in the face of adversity.
“Fear is a reaction. Courage is a choice.” -Winston S. Churchill

LAURENT OF VERE AS LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
Fairy tales have long served as vessels for conveying profound truths and universal themes. Among these timeless tales, "Little Red Riding Hood" stands as an emblematic narrative, exploring the loss of innocence and the perils of deception. In the Captive Prince trilogy, Laurent of Vere emerges as a fascinating counterpart to Little Red, encapsulating themes of shattered innocence, cunning and wit, unorthodox coming-of-age, and self-empowerment. Laurent's transformative journey is explored in this essay through the intriguing parallels between his experiences and those woven within various iterations of "Little Red Riding Hood."
INNOCENCE SHATTERED
"Little Red Riding Hood" unveils the dangers of manipulation, sexual predation and the inevitable loss of innocence. The tale follows the young protagonist's encounter with the deceptive wolf, exposing the vulnerability that accompanies trust. This metaphor of innocence shattered finds a meaningful resonance within Laurent's narrative. As Little Red falls prey to the wolf's deceit, Laurent, too, becomes ensnared in a web of manipulation orchestrated by his uncle, the Regent. Initially a figure cloaked in apparent benevolence and reason, the Regent conceals his true nature—a pedophile, murderer, and manipulator. Like the wolf, the Regent preys upon Laurent's vulnerability, masquerading as a protector while corrupting his innocence. This traumatic experience irreversibly transforms Laurent, birthing within him a shrewd, cold, and strategic individual who perceives the Regent's true nature and resolves to break free from his clutches.
CUNNING AND WIT
Throughout different retellings of "Little Red Riding Hood," feminist critiques have often cast the young girl as a cunning and clever protagonist. She deftly outwits the wolf, employing her wit as a shield against danger. Laurent, too, exemplifies remarkable cunning and wit as he maneuvers through the treacherous realms of the Captive Prince trilogy. Mirroring Little Red's resourcefulness, Laurent utilizes his intelligence and strategic acumen to outmaneuver adversaries, ensuring his survival and protection. Both characters embody the radical power of intellect, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, cunning and wit can be wielded as potent tools.
UNCONVENTIONAL COMING OF AGE
Little Red's journey is frequently interpreted as a coming-of-age tale, marked by the transition from childhood to adulthood. As the young girl confronts the dangers lurking within the woods, she emerges with newfound wisdom and resilience. Laurent's journey echoes this metamorphic process but deviates from traditional narratives of coming of age. Rather than experiencing a conventional transition, Laurent's maturity is catalyzed by his harrowing experiences of abuse and trauma at the hands of the Regent. Like Little Red's symbolic death within the belly of the wolf, Laurent undergoes a metaphorical death of his innocence and emerges reborn—a more astute, calculating, and self-possessed individual. His journey mirrors the unorthodox paths of personal growth, illustrating that transformation can arise from the darkest depths.
RED HOOD AND SYMBOLISM
In the original tale, the eponymous character's red hood serves as a potent symbol, often associated with menstruation and the onset of womanhood. This crimson emblem signifies a rite of passage and the navigation of newfound responsibilities and dangers. Laurent's own journey intertwines with this symbolism, albeit in an untraditional manner. Within the treacherous court of Arles, which serves as the equivalent of the dangerous woods Little Red traverses, Laurent grapples with complex power dynamics and manipulations. As he confronts these challenges head-on, his metamorphosis into a more formidable figure parallels the symbolic transition represented by Little Red's red hood. Both characters navigate treacherous territories, embodying the trials and tribulations inherent in the process of growth and self-discovery.
THE HUNTSMAN'S ROLE
In Laurent's story, the character of Damianos of Akielos mirrors the role of the huntsman, traditionally depicted as a protector and savior figure. While the huntsman embodies patriarchal notions of male protection in the original tale, Damen challenges and subverts these roles by redefining the traditional role of a protector and challenging the power dynamics associated with it. While the huntsman in the original tale embodies the concept of male protection within a patriarchal framework, Damen's actions and motivations deviate from this narrative. Unlike the huntsman, Damen's protection of Laurent is not driven by a desire for dominance or control. His unwavering commitment to Laurent stems from genuine care and concern, rather than a sense of entitlement or superiority. By prioritizing Laurent's well-being and respecting his agency, Damen establishes a relationship based on equality and mutual support, rather than one rooted in traditional gender roles. He disrupts expectations of masculinity and demonstrates that men can play supportive and nurturing roles without reinforcing patriarchal power dynamics. By redefining the huntsman's role, Damen fosters healing and self-empowerment in Laurent. He encourages Laurent to reclaim his agency, challenge oppressive systems, and find his own path to justice. In this way, Damen's actions and their life-altering impact on Laurent's growth and transformation serve as a powerful subversion of patriarchal notions, offering a more progressive and empowering narrative within the story.
In conclusion, the parallels between Laurent's character and the themes embedded in different renditions of "Little Red Riding Hood" offer an evocative analysis of innocence shattered, cunning and wit, unorthodox coming of age, and self-empowerment. Laurent's transformative journey not only reflects the timeless lessons ingrained in the fairy tale but also explores the complexities of power dynamics, manipulation, and personal growth. Through Laurent's trials and triumphs, we are compelled to contemplate the indomitable spirit that resides within us all, echoing the enduring allure and relevance of "Little Red Riding Hood."
