so im back again looking at dc’s original sin and their recent hypocrisy over depicting human rights, and this time its bruce timm’s dcau. you know, the one where batman is a groomer and sleeps with babs.

yeah. no shit they mess everything up. continued under the cut

in the amazons-centered episode “fury” there’s explicit war crimes. aresia, who will grow up to be an amazon intent on murdering every man in the world, witnesses victorious enemy soldiers opening fire inside houses and bombing her village. when she and her mother escape to a refugee ship, armed pirates take everything and then blow it up as they’re leaving.

this? this is actually a decent depiction of war for a so-called kids show. they’re clearly capable. which should make one think, gee, are they going to apply that same careful treatment to other horrors that happened in real life?

….

haha oh boy. this entire 3-part episode was a disrespectful clusterfuck and the writers were completely self-aware that it was a disrespectful clusterfuck. and im going to tell you why.

1) horrible alternate history writing.

well. this had to be the most braindead attempt at alternate history ive ever seen (along with everything else dc has touched relating to wwii) and it’s only topped by spike tv’s alternate history, which has a similar scenario to this one.

so it’s 1944. d-day fails and is the “beginning of the end omg omg” for the allied powers. i assume they mean the western powers because apparently, no american audience gives a shit about the soviet union and their vital part in beating nazi germany more than we ever could. and you know, how they were literally fighting for their lives against an entire country that wanted to wipe them out as a people.

also notable is that they leave out the pacific theater. because nooooo we can’t make fantasy bullshit about imperial japan!! but somehow nazi germany is okay to include in your shitty superhero setup.

yeah. so we later learn that vandal savage got all of his information from a laptop equipped with a cd player (lmao good luck charging that) with some loaded tidbits on how to win world war ii. it’s all cliche shit that you would learn from the history channel. “bla bla, hitler too crazy bla bla, need better technology bla bla bla, also d-day, bla bla bla.”

jesus christ did they just get super stoned and then watch one (1) documentary?

the technology in question is literally spiky rolling pins and jet planes. sorry dc, fancy technology isn’t going to save a dying war effort against a country that’s already developing an atomic bomb. nazi germany was fucked at this point and everyone knew it. nothing was ever going to bring it back. sorry. that’s the truth. dc also seems to have this problem with the typical “nazis get the bomb” scenario. which, doesn’t work either by the way, because they thought “atomic science was jewish.”

and don’t come at me with that “it’s just alternate history” excuse. alternatehistoryhub and pretty much everyone called out spike tv for the exact same divergence. this shit doesn’t get a pass either. bad storytelling is just bad storytelling.

now, if it was about america i mean the allied powers going full scorched-earth and leaving savage’s germany a radioactive, infertile wasteland…maybe id like it. it would be somewhat better than the crap we got here.

tldr: vandal savage is your average sweaty laptop-bound hoi4 player looking for worldwide validation. he gets an idea to send all of his hoi4 tactics to his 1940s self. the nazis then win the war with giant killer rolling pins.

that’s it. that’s the plot.

2) explicit holocaust denial and revisionism.

this one was only implied throughout the episode, but it was actually confirmed by the producers and writers behind the episode:

so stan berkowitz really ran his mouth here. because apparently, “to kill lots of people [in campaigns such as the holocaust] requires effort and manpower that could have been put to use elsewhere better, like defending the country.”

….

okay.

so. the holocaust was industrialized to the extreme. it was not a ‘bad allocation of resources’ that ‘could have went somewhere better.’ it was linked to the war, especially in the eastern front, where the goal was to ethnically cleanse and enslave eastern europe and replace its reduced population with ethnic german settlers. everything about it was all planned and discussed. figures were laid out. thought was put into the extermination of entire groups of people. the final solution was only the start.

what kind of ‘wasted effort and manpower’ are we talking about here? the einsatzgruppen following behind the wehrmacht? that process was phased out, but not because it was a ‘drain on manpower.’ the nazis wanted a more ‘efficient’ way of executing mass murder that could be done faster and with the ‘best results.’ the extermination camp system was the answer to that. killings were mechanized via the gas chambers and bodies were disposed of in the crematoriums, rather than being routinely shot and disposed of in mass graves. the only argument i could see for ‘manpower’ is the camp personnel, but even then it wasn’t the personalized approach to killing that defined the einsatzgruppen. starvation, forced labor, brutal conditions, and illness were killing the surviving camp prisoners too.

and it was the whole point. the holocaust was a deliberately structured, planned nightmare meant to kill off thousands of people just for existing. nazi germany applied the lessons of the assembly line to mass murder. to characterize it as a ‘pointless waste of resources’ reeks of historical insensitivity and ignorance. removing it from nazi germany is enabling holocaust revisionism and denial. both of which are common today. now you have a history in the dcau where “the holocaust was either cut short or never happened at all.” by doing this, you are spitting on millions of people by suggesting, even in a fictional context, that their trauma never happened. you are delegitimizing the memory of the holocaust by deciding, intentionally, to whitewash it outright.

the problem isn’t just that they couldn’t depict the holocaust. it’s that they knew, and chose not to because it would break their whole narrative.

the rest it is typical cowardice and ignorant writing. ‘defending the country’ as if nazi germany hadn’t started the european theater on its own after making a false-flag attack? what kind of ‘defense’ are we talking about here? if you start a war and other people fight back, that’s on you, dumbass. you reap what you sow.

and this thing with savage apparently ‘stopping’ the holocaust by being ‘professional’ if there even is such a thing in wartime? is that supposed to make me empathize with the character somehow? “yuh he work for nazis and is ebil dictator but least he’s not a fanatical murdering racist hurr durr!!!”

which brings me onto the main problem here.

3) portrayal of nazi germany and nazism as an ideology in general.

i think you have a serious problem on your hands if you’re going to use the iconography and history of nazi germany, but then shy away from depicting it accurately. am i supposed to suspend my belief and accept that a bunch of violent racist shitstains allowed a non-german foreigner, who is canonically a caveman and most likely classified very low in the nazi racial hierarchy, to just walk in and take over just because of ‘cool technology?’ and then gets allowed to halt their genocide program based on racism and eliminationism literally in the ideology?

i’m going to tell you something that you probably don’t want to hear. vandal savage would not be accepted in anything near the nazi party. at best he’s denounced as a freak against nature (as pretty much every other metahuman would be, despite this whole ‘superhuman’ narrative that people are trying to conflate to nazi racism) and his plans are stolen and credited to some other asslicking sycophant. what does his dcau version have besides immortality? maybe he’s ordered to be killed and it obviously fails. but being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t feel pain. or that your brain won’t eventually snap from the helplessness of surviving everything, living with the humiliation and never being allowed to end it.

didn’t like that? sorry, that’s the reality of nazism, racism, and exclusionary eliminationist mentality in general for you.

in the episode, nazism doesn’t get much of an explanation besides the general “take over the world” bullshit. swastikas and iconography are conveniently censored out, which is a problem in itself. unless you’re following the law, like say in germany, if you have to censor out parts of nazi germany, ideology and iconography included, because its not ‘appropriate’ for your audience…then maybe, you should try another plotline instead of sanitizing history. which shouldn’t be a problem for the dcau in the first place, because, once again. they have shown literal scenes of war crimes being committed against a child and her fellow refugees.

but dc comics has a bad history with this topic overall, and im going to confidently say that i’ve never seen anything that depicts nazism, explicitly named, as accurately as it should be. j michael stracynski’s first volume of wonder woman odyssey does a great job at explaining the methodology of genocide and the banality of evil without ever bringing nazi germany into the equation. it’s not even set in world war ii at all, but there is some offhand imagery that invokes nazi mass murder nonetheless. and it’s not surprising, considering JMS has personal experience with the ideology. his own abusive father was a war criminal and nazi collaborator.

dc can portray the ideology accurately and with the respect that the victims deserve, both historical and modern day. anyone can, if they do enough research. but the problem is, most of their ‘fun ideas’ lose the plot when confronted with the real horrors that they can’t face. there is no ‘fun’ in any of this. you either accept that truth and write conscientiously, or you fuck off back to your lane and never go near the topic at all. because it’s better not to have exploitative stories than suffer through actually reading one.

4) superhero brainrot over reality.

so why did the writers knowingly erase the holocaust from the dcau and omit all explicit references to nazi germany, even as they depicted other war crimes elsewhere and actually had a character intent on committing a global genocide?

the answer is simple. they even admitted it themselves.

that’s right. they didn’t care for the millions of lives lost in world war ii, or the human cost of that period to the point where “genocide” was coined as a legal term for the first time. no, this entire thing started off the base desire to recreate the jingoistic, american war propaganda of the golden age and satisfy some kind of itch. style was the motivator here over substance. that’s all. their own words speak for themselves.

conclusion

unless they have a personal, even harrowing connection to the ideology or knowledge of the topic (as jms does with his family history, or someone who has seen the ideology up close), a majority of people in the comic industry do not care about depicting the horrors of reality accurately. their motives are small-minded and focused on escapism. what the dcau writers wanted was a modern version of the golden age propaganda, where the american public knew next to nothing of the details in the final solution and nazis were just ‘stock villains.’ it couldn’t work, not with the knowledge we have today. so they cut out the holocaust, censored everything incriminating and watered it down to the point where it didn’t really matter.

and who out there, except a couple of people, are actually talking about it? for the most part, nobody else in the industry or the consumer market seems to care. look at the writers who are actually taking inspiration from this, or people citing it as something ‘decent’ for storytelling.

haha. oh god. we’re fucked.

tldr: despite being more than capable of depicting war crimes: the dcau writers couldn’t handle the reality of nazi germany and the holocaust, but still wanted their world war ii propaganda copium, so they intentionally pissed away every drop of their remaining self-respect and somehow got away with it.

SNK 134: Why we need to move forward.

Well...

That's horrifying...

Oh but whatever they are probably bad people in there. Thieves, greedy people, hateful mothers, men who beat their wives , liars, bullies, killers, murderers, rapist, child rapist and racist babies.

Yeah...

This is a rhetoric that has been used for ages and is currently being used in this fandom especially on reddit and 4chan.

The justification of injustice.

When George Floyd was slammed on the ground and died because he couldn't breathe anymore, conservatives and republicans at large ignored the police brutaliy leading up to that.

He was just a cocaine or drug addict who one day pointed a gun at a pregnant lady. So he was a criminal and deserved that.

Of course ignoring the racial segregation that happened from the very legalized slavery hundreds of years ago and how poor and racially stigmatized black people are being in America right now.

When the Uyghurs are being genocided by China, the world blinds itself because China is one the worlds necessary assets in economy as it basically produces a good chunk of what is being used in the world. Most made by children, " but it makes us live "... Apparently that's the only logical reason...

When Palestinians and Israelis are literally killing each other over some complicated non sense that no one ever really understands and also Israël basically doing Apartheid at this point,

When the totality of the Middle East has turned into a warzone because of the United States's violent imperialism,

After everyone hided Hange valuable informations including Eren who had information about KRUGER who was a spy in MARLEY. Who has created a civil war in Eldia and activated the rumbling while killing Eldian civilians in the way.

After seeing the mental breakdown of Bertolt, who we don't hear about anymore, Annie and Reiner's mental breakdown over GENOCIDING AN ENTIRE GROUP OF PEOPLE, by the way Reiner totally didn't develop another persona at that time to cope with what he was doing, HUH ?

After all the deaths, Carla, Grisha, Dina, Faye Marco, Levi's squad, Ymir, Erwin, Sasha, Hange, Hannes, Floch and many others, how can you go and be like "CHAD EREN, BEING DADDY, FUCKING HIS MEAT WAIFU, PHILOSOPHER FREEDOM SEEKER"

This has sparked debates.

On my part, I enjoy it but I take it with the context. Most of their airships have been destroyed and they are facing their doom upfront right now. It's more of a death plea at this point. Just like in the cave with Histor... GOD IT'S SO HARD SAYING HER NAME... with Historia who said truly horrible things at the point of an imminent death. At that moment, words like this can tell what you really are inside but even that is not enough to have a full picture.

It did have some interesting elements.

It is true, using, raising, breeding hate and shoving problems upon a group will always come bite you up the ass someday.

Marley in their extensive and violent coloniaslistic, imperialiatic behavior towards Eldia creates only weaknesses for them on an international field and create this monstruosity that is right now Eren.

Eren, a soldier who suffer from trauma and PTSD, who has terrible insecurities and everything to lose after losing so much and possibly in my book being influenced by another entity decides to kill them all.

But...

In no way does that justify Eren's actions, in fact it goes against it.

He is just as angry and hateful as they were back then but instead of destroying the system, he decides to genocide.

Essentializing the whole world as your ennemy and problem, and deciding to get rid of it is just continuing what has been started and continued for hundreds of years before.

No one ever thinks about the simple families, the innocent children, the homeless...

What about them Eren ?

What about the people who faced discrimination like Ramzi ?

What about the other groups that are almost extinct just like yours ?

What about the groups that tried to support the Eldians but were considered freaks ? HUH ?

What about the babies and innocent children ?

In all honesty...

This is... dissapointing and an insult to Historia fans. Why ? What is the purpose or the reason ? Being tragic ? To show how far Historia can go to protect her loved ones ? A female Eren so ?

I always leaned towards the fake pregnancy even if I don't know how something like that could be really pulled. I didn't understand this choice for his storytelling. The others I understand but this one...

So she really is pregnant ? But nothing leading up to it makes sense.

The character whose thematics still rings too much true for this arc is put in the background and as a breeding farm on top of that.

It even came to a point I started people to stop asking about her.

I had faith in her presence in the final arc. That she would have a role play.

For people who don't understand why this aspect of story is wrong, we have to break it down.

First off, Historia one of the first queer characters with Ymir in SNK. Others are suspected but these two are the few that holds a definitive representation as queer.

Most often in media or in real life, LGBT people have been forced into a situation that requires them to fall under heterosexuals lives. Here Historia is forced to be pregnant, yes in a way she agreed because of her people, but at the same time she didn't really want it.

For queer people, like me, this still rings true. Too much true. People literally forces you to go for your opposite sex everytime, to have a family.

No, stop forcing your view of your own life or desire of life on other people.

The fact that the fandom rationalizes that and says that she is happy and in love with Eren is just so fucking weird.

It either is blind ship following, heteronormativity or not understanding the story.

And I saw people saying she might be bisexual. This doesn't change anything. Also ignoring the fact that she hasn't shown any attraction to men other than women in the story.

If she is bisexual, it doesn't change anything, she is still queer. Not semi-straight AND EVEN IF SHE WAS A WOMAN WHO HAPPENED TO BE STRAIGHT, SHE IS STILL FORCED INTO SOMETHING SHE DID NOT WANT.

Bisexual is not semi-straight, semi-gay.

It's bisexual.

Bisexual, Straight and Homosexuality are not the same thing.

And if she was straight, that doesn't make it acceptable. It's just sick.

No. This doesn't make sense. Even Eren said that Historia's action as a queen were to help others. How could she be okay sitting at her house ? Telling no one about what Eren was going to do ? And becoming a breeding farm ? What is the logic in that ?

Why make it suspicious than ?

The only thing that was able to make any logical sense to me was that the person we are seeing here isn't Historia.

I know if my theory is right, it's sick, even more sick.

The only times we saw Historia after the timeskip was during flashbacks, the reveal at 107 and possibly at the end of 123.

If this is her at the end of 123, I want to ask you why is she all prepared, why is she all dressed up and why is she wearing the same clothes in 134 that she is wearing 107. Something doesn't add up.

She is young, small-petite, blonde and her belly and face are hidden.

I was only able to go through the theory that this is a fake Historia. Than who it is than ?

Well, I searched for female characters who look like her or who could look like Historia right now. From all the characters that we haven't seen coming coming back and that has interacted with Historia, there is only one.

Rico Brzenska.

For those, who don't remember her : She was a Garrison Member who helped Mikasa and Eren during the Trost Arc and also helped Historia while she was exhausted during the Clash of the Titans Arc.

She hasn't appeared ever since the start of the Return to Shiganshina Arc unlike many of the older characters.

She is the only one I see who could pass as Historia I think.

I know this is still sick. But this is the only way I would be able to make Historia get out of this crappy storyline and play some relevance in the story. And if we look at Rico and Historia in 107, they kinda look the same. They have the heart shaped face, they are both small and they both have this sort of closed eyelids.

One line that just stuck with me of Rico was:

"Hiding/Lying about Eren's rampage in the report wouldn't have benefited humanity. "

This was during Eren's trial before joining the Survey Corps. What was discused was when Eren lost control of himself during the Trost Arc and attacked Mikasa.

The second line that struck was the one where she holds Historia who is exhausted in her arms:

"Wow! Who is this girl, is she okay ?"

I don't know why it just pushed that theory. And I kinda believe it now, because no one can make me believe that there is something satisfying coming out of this. Why would she sacrifice herself for Historia ? Well, I don't really know but Rico was always a little wary of Eren, even after the Trost Arc but yeah ultimately for Rico being able to give her own life for Historia. I don't know about that. But with this manga you never now. It is a very dark and twisted theory but this is the only logical thing I can see right now since no answers have been provided.

Monkey is BACK

Zeke is back and like most of us predicted, Eren dragged him with him. And I'm not gonna lie, the way he was attached to the spine was pretty badass.

He is used as a puppet which reinforces the theory for me that all three of them: Eren, Ymir and Zeke are being used by the Attack Titan.

I cannot understand Eren's illogical behavior especially after seeing the train scene where he says he wants them to live long happy lives and than having him kill his friends.

Ymir the first being free and having eyes to returning to having no eyes just like before and Eren.

And Zeke would have never agreed to the Rumbling. And we can't see his eyes either.

And...

Because...

After how much shit they have gone through and after how much the fandom, not just the Eren stans, have mocked them. Like the fandom has been the biggest asshole to the the Alliance while they were the ones who were able to survive through the sentence " Genocide is wrong!" that so many people seems to find to be so hard to say.

I will root for them until the bitter end, I don't care. They are the one who are fighting. You can call Cringevengers all you want but I am glad they are winning.

They all suffered like Eren but they didn't prioritize their own and only feelings above everything else and they stood by for the values they fought for since they joined the Survey Corps. Even if I have to admit they have, for most of them, conflicted feelings with what they were doing and have done things like trying to talk to Eren while it's obvious he wasn't going to talk and that in a situation like this I don't think someone would try to stop Eren by just talking.

Levi, and it would be foolish to not recognize it, is being consumed by his promise but he is restraining it and still is able to think about the bigger picture.

There's one thing I really like about this is Armin asking Eren:

"Eren... I'll ask you one last time... "What part of you is free" after we rip you out from there... "

Hehe... yes... what part of you is free ?

To be honest, there's many things I don't want for the ending.

A Lelouch Ending, it was all Eren's plan. Literally wouldn't make sense. No one would be questionning his free will and he wouldn't have these weird shits happening to him.

A Code Geass ending, why would Mikasa have to kill Eren, what does that add to her as a character ? More tragedy ? No she doesn't have the scarf, it's pretty telling what place she's at right now.

Eren being the daddy. NO, JUST NO.

Everyone dies, genocide is the right thing. You know all the worst shit that can happen.

But most of all I want important plot points to be explored and moved over because ever since the timeskip, there has been no important plot points out the way. Eren's behavior, Ackertalk, Bertolttalk, Historia's Condition, Paths stuffs, answers!

Whatever... Trust me Peace is not something I take for granted. Being proud of myself and having a life with the least conflict and problem is something you fight for. Having rights, being recognized as a human.

Never lose that, fight for it. But never with injustice, be smarter and stronger. Cause at the end what unites us is not only what we have in common but what the perspective of what we have not in common can make a bigger picture of what we are as humans. We all are different and have a different story with similarities but in the end, we are human and born into this world. And in that, we must move forward. In the present, because of the past and for the future.

We all wish for the problems to go away but if it's for the solutions to be rigged with injustice, it will not work. No one has acheived with genocide and never will.

Lemme do a quick rant on the arrowverse

The arrowverse is racist, colorist, antisemitic, and sexist.

First colorist amaya jiwe who is supposed to be comepletly African is light skinned with straight hair and a British accent. While her good granddaughter is also light skinned with straight hair but her “evil” granddaughter is dark skinned with kinky hair and an African accent. That’s not a coincidence. Iris’s mom who left her and Wally and was considered a bad mother is dark skinned while iris and Wally and joe all considered good people are not. Wally is played by a biracial actor (who I love don’t get me wrong) but doesn’t make sense if both his parents are black. Now XS who should be biracial looks white. She has white features and lighter skin than Wally which makes no sense if she is only half white. Again colorism.

Now straight up white washing. White canary is an Asian woman assassin but is played by a white blonde woman. Really this is pink washing cause they made her bisexual to push under the rug they whitewashed her. Conner Hawke is supposed to be Black, white and Asian. But instead they gave his story line to a white character named William and Samantha who is supposed to be blasian is white. They then gave the name Conner hawke to the nearest biracial kid who was only black and white and comepletly erases his Asian identity. They had the Hawkboy and vandal white even though they were supposed to be from Egypt.

They’re also antisemitic. They had one of their two Jewish characters killed in their shitty Nazi crossover episode. That crossover had them go to a world where Hitler wins WWII and everyone is like a Nazi. So that in itself is antisemitic.

There is so much sexism that I don’t even want to get into right now. (I didn’t watch enough supergirl to really call them out there than their sexism w/ Kara and Mon-El) But my point is the arrowverse is literally so fucking trash. And he writer suck.

The Holocaust Movie and the Goy

Alright, gather round kids, because we're going to talk about Jewish represention.

This isn't my first essay about Jewish representation in Hollywood, but while that one focused on the development of Jewish characterization in television and especially in media set in modern times, this one will focus on the role Jews play in Holocaust related narratives.

I will focus specifically on Holocaust movies, that is, movies that take place in territories in belonging to Germany or experiencing German occupation led to any of the deaths included in the six million figure. While one might be tempted to include movies taking place during the war (anything from Casablanca to Captain America: The First Avenger), their relevance to an essay about Jewish representation in their own narrative is minimal at best, as the Western narrative of World War II centers on the West (specifically, the United States and Britain) and its defeat of the Germans.

What do I mean by Jewish representation in their own narrative? The Holocaust is a historical event, not a story, after all. However, collective memory associates the Holocaust with the Jews - and for good reason. The Jews were the main target of the Nazi regime, and although exactly when the Holocaust began is hard to determine - did it start with the first concentration camp, the first anti-Jewish discriminatory law, or the rise of Hitler? - there is no question that not only were more Jews murdered than any other group targeted by the Nazis (the second largest group to be targeted while under German rule were the Poles, not including the Soviets, at an estimated 1.3-3 million victims, while famously, as I previously stated, six million Jews died {although I'd argue that the Romani population, which lost a much larger percentage of their total population, were more affected by the Holocaust, and numbers can be misleading}), but also, in addition, Jews faced public restrictions not shared by other groups - "no entrance for dogs and Jews", the ghettos, etc, were all reserved for Jews (not to say that no other group faced humiliation, just that the Jewish one was the most prevalent, early, and widespread).

So the Jews were the main targets of the Holocaust, and the historical narrative - our collective memory of the Holocaust - tends to reflect that. And yet, the stories actually bring told about the Holocaust, specifically and especially in Hollywood movies, aren't at all about Jews.

Take the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, for example. The tragic story of a German boy who discovers a concentration camp near his house, befriends a Jewish boy, and one day sneaks in and (spoiler) ends up being gassed. Or Schindler’s List, the touching story of a man who, although starting the movie as a ruthless capitalists, ends up saving 1200 Jews. The Book Thief, about a girl adopted by a German family who hide a Jewish man in their basement, her friendship with a boy who joins Hitler Youth, and her relationship with Death.

Beginning to see a pattern?

This isn’t to say that there are no Jewish narratives out there. A notable exception is The Diary of Anne Frank, who was a real Jewish girl writing in hiding about her thoughts and feelings as a teenager. But this is type of exception that proves the rule - after all, Anne Frank doesn’t exemplify the Holocaust as we think of it - humans treated worse than animals, slaughtered in the millions. The Diary ends before we could get to the part. It doesn’t discuss the horrors that Jews experienced, but the supposedly universal experiences of a teenage girl, no matter that - and perhaps despite the fact that - she happened to also be Jewish and in hiding the entire time.

Jews aren’t allowed to express our own grief over the Holocaust. We must be seen through a filter - specifically, through the heroism of “The Good Gentile”, and at times, “The Good Nazi”. We are taught to be sympathetic not to the often dehumanized or minor Jewish characters, who are background, the backdrop for the true heroes of the story - not the survivors or victims, but the goyim.

The worst aspect of this is The Good Nazi trope. Where Hands Touch is a very recent and horrifying example of it, about a biracial (half black!!!) girl falling in love with a Nazi’s son. I genuinely cannot imagine a worse story to be telling right now, with racism and antisemitism on the rise. This insistence on humanizing the Nazi is born not out of good will, but a fascination with them. Literally romanticizing the Nazis is a bad thing - it creates an image of a state that was filled with unwilling Nazis, people who were simply there to survive.

Only that’s bullshit. There’s a reason we can count the Righteous Among the Nations - because they were rare. We’re talking about a culture in which antisemitism was so ingrained, not only did people not object when sanctions against Jews were enacted, but they cheered. “The Jews taking our jobs, engineering our fall from former glory...”

Sound familiar?

They were buying newspapers with racist cartoons, posting signs in their windows saying “no entrance for dogs and Jews”, vandalizing Jewish property, beating Jews in public, kids mocking and bullying their former classmates... They were active participants every step of the way, even if they didn’t vote for Hitler (although a great deal of them did). They were sending their children to Hitler Youth, indoctrinating the next generation in the same drivel they were being taught - in movies, in books, on the radio, on the backs of fucking cigarette cartons, they were all being taught to hate Jews, and they did. They believed that Germany was being brought to its former glory, that Hitler was doing it, and that the Jews were at fault for their fall and defeat in WWI in the first place, so all of this was justified. And in case you were wondering, people knew about the camps. They always knew - it’s mentioned in letters and diaries. People knew about the horrors, and they went on with their normal lives. Jews would come to them for help and they would report them. The would loot the houses of their Jewish neighbors, even just move in because, well, the Jews probably stole the money used to buy it, so why not steal it back? It’s not like they were returning to take it back from them.

And yes, they went about their ordinary lives. They had jobs, and friends, and hobbies. Many of them were “nice people”. Except that they were Nazis. And they were teaching their children to be Nazis. And we don’t need stories about them being good people. Especially not now.

We need stories about Jews and Romani people and all the other victims. We need to focus on the stories of those who the Holocaust changed, to the point that you can see it in their DNA. We need to stop looking at the Holocaust through the eyes of the perpetrators, and start looking at it through the eyes of the people who’s stories we keep dismissing.

Stop erasing Jews from our own fucking narratives, is what I’m saying here.

If Doom wins then how come this issue isn't subtitled "Doom Risen"?

Ugh. How long has this Doom event been fucking going on?! My advice to Snyder: next time, make Lex Luthor smarter so his plan comes to fruition quicker! Some of the Justice League are in the past hiding in Atlantis with the Justice Society as a captured Poseidon tries to destroy it. They need Vandal Savage's help to get the totality to the future so John Stewart convinces him by yelling, "Oorah!" Hourman and Alan Scott jizz their jeans over his masculinity and decide that maybe a negro member of the Justice Society wouldn't be such a bad thing. You might think I'm letting my cynical view of the world reinterpret the scene in a fairly unforgiving way but I assure you it doesn't come across much better than that. I wonder how they'd feel if John Stewart had convinced Vandal to help them using architecture metaphors?

Did I accidentally pick up the extra-gay version of this month's Justice League?

I think I accidentally stumbled into a new way for DC to make money. Forget variant covers and foil card insert. Why don't they put out extra-gay issues?! They could call one version the "Extra-Straight" version and the other version the "Extra-Gay" just so we don't get into the weeds arguing about why one is called the "Normal Issue." Although I think if two comic books existed that were slight variations of each other and one was the "Extra-Straight" version and one was the "Extra-Gay" version, it would totally be more gay to buy the "Extra-Straight" version. It sounds like that one is going to be full of shirtless men wrestling in totally non-boner inducing ways that are actually super boner inducing. If DC won't take my super great moneymaking idea that will wind up selling a billion issues of Harley and Poison Ivy #1 (Extra-Gay version) then maybe I can trademark the idea of "Extra-Straight" comic books and sue all the Comicsgaters producing comic books. Do Comicsgate comic books have copy on the covers in huge fonts that say things like "No Gay Characters!" and "If a Character is Black, It's Totally Plot Related!" and "This Won't Pass the Bechdel Test. AT ALL!"? I think I'm making Comicsgate comic books sound more interesting than they really are! I bet most of them are boring super hero punch ups where characters occasionally reference Pepe the Frog and fly through the air in a pose like they're heiling Hitler. Back to the plot, is Barry Allen really interested in wearing his hair long? Why am I suddenly finding him interesting? I almost wrote "more interesting" but, you know, it's Barry Allen. The most interesting thing he ever did was appearing out of nowhere during Crisis on Infinite Earths and disintegrating. Unless Barry was actually asking John if John thought he could rip Vandal's hair off of his head. Although that interpretation makes Barry more interesting as well. What I'm saying is this is the most interesting panel Barry Allen has ever been a part of. Meanwhile in the future (if that makes any sense at all), Kamandi has gathered up heroes from various futures to RRHAAAOOOR! I'm told by editorial that "RRHAAAOOOR" means "kick some ass" in panther. How come it's usually okay to swear in a foreign language in an all ages comic book?

One of the "heroes" he brings is Lobo. So Brainiac is fucked.

An easy way to tell if a comic book fan is a psychopath is to gauge how angry they get at two things I love to write (largely for that reaction): Deathstroke is a pedophile and Lobo is the most powerful and most fuckable and greatest character to ever come out of DC. Along with websites that track known pedophiles in your neighborhood, I think we should also have a database of people who get irate at the idea that Deathstroke is a pedophile. They go fucking crazy defending a fictional character's reputation over something not worth defending! I might agree they have a point that using the term "pedophile" is misleading at best. He's more of a statutory rapist! But even that gets their Quixotic gears turning. Yes, I'm comparing myself to a majestic windmill. The Lobo thing doesn't get people so incensed but it does bring out a lot of actually nerds who don't understand how much fun I'm having with my hyperbolic love of such a one trick character. My favorite thing about Lobo is that he looks cool in a way that doesn't look cool at all. How did they do that?! He's a hot clown! He's a MILF: mechanic I'd like to fuck! He's so over-the-top that I can't understand people who try to take him seriously. He's the greatest joke DC has ever played on their readers and I love him unironically. Also, you know Lobo leaves you satisfied after he fucks you. And I don't think it matters if you're female or male or space dolphin. He's gonna give it to you fucking good.

The pieces of the Totality are secured and all the Starmen throughout time are linked together psychically. It's their last chance! Perpetua is about to be defeated! I will ignore the cover and pretend that everything is going to work out and that Hawkgirl isn't going to fuck it all up with her desire to bash Luthor in the back of the head with her mace. Hopefully J'onn J'onzz will finally assert his will and get her back on track. Or else the multiverse is doomed! You know. Like Luthor has been trying to explain for forty-five issues. Welp. Kendra fucked it all up. Perpetua is risen. All hail Doom. Justice League #34 Final Thoughts: Okay, fine. The big plan failed and Doom won and Perpetua can now manipulate the multiverse however she wants. But there's one thing she forgot to do before declaring victory: she didn't kill Batman. What a fucking amateur move! The first villain to actually begin by killing Batman will be the first villain to completely take over everything. I guess that's why The Joker is the smartest villain in the DC Universe. He's doing the real work.

Camp Campus AU: Part 2

Finally! It’s here, after like a week! This took longer than I thought it would, these characters are really hard to draw but I think I’m pretty satisfied with what I have right now. Since I finished this, that also means I dedicate more time to asks, specifically those that requests drawings! That also means I can focus on drawing comics and stuff revolving around their relationships, which I’m excited. I’m really excited to continue with this project and see it grow, and I’m so glad you’re all here to see it with me! You have no idea how grateful I am for all of the love that you’ve all sent so far! Thank you so much. Anyway, without further ado, here we go!

Maxwell/Max : Like many of his peers, Max hasn’t changed much since his time at Camp Campbell. Max is still as vulgar as ever and maintains his pessimistic outlook on life. However, many people think its all just an act now to keep up his reputation. Since Camp Campbell, Max’s life has honestly taken a turn for the better. He has a healthier home life, loyal companions, and Mr. Honeynuts. He is generally happier than he was 7 years prior. The only inner conflict Max truly struggles with now are his budding feelings for his best friend and whether or not he wants to jeopardize their friendship. Also Max is often teased for his “baby” hands, they’re really really small.

Cornelius/Neil : Intelligent, cocky, and overly sarcastic, Neil plays the role of the parent when it comes to handling Nikki and Max. Unlike his friends, Neil was the only one who matured both physically and mentally and feels as if its his job to make sure Nikki and Max don’t wind up killing someone else or themselves. As mentioned before, Neil and Nikki remained close even after each summer brought an end to their Camp Campbell experience. The reason being his dad and Nikki’s mom eloping and combining the families. While Nikki is eager to invite Neil into her life as the older brother she never had, Neil harbors a sort of resentment towards his dad as a result of his parents’ divorce. Although he is glad to spend time with Nikki as well, Neil is still consciously struggling with his parents’ divorce and can’t help but to think that Candy is a homewrecker, even though he had admitted before that his parents’ relationship was awful. Outside of his home life, Neil can be a bit stuck-up and act like a know-it-all at times. He still harbors a deep loathing for Harrison, now mostly because Harrison claims to be a flat-earther. He’s also still incredibly annoyed by Space Kid, although he has no reason to be. Neil also runs a tutoring business at school in order to make a profit, but unfortunately for him (Or maybe fortunately) Tabii’s his only reoccurring customer. Neil is also Erin’s vice president in the Student Council and they seem to make a great team. He also has custom-made glasses because his nose is so fucking big.

Preston Goodplay : Preston is the stereotypical school thespian. Like at Camp Campbell, he’s outrageous and posses a larger than life attitude. He’s both over-dramatic and overemotional, but refuses to take any form of criticism. Preston is often cast as a main role in any school production and even takes it upon himself to critique his underclassmen in the drama department. Despite coming off as a total wacko, Preston is very talented and each performance that he gives is full of energy. Preston is very particular about his passion and is quick to anger if things don’t go his way. Preston acknowledges his relationship with his of his Camp Campbell peers, but doesn’t really willingly share his interest with any of them because of his fear that they might fuck it all up. However, he and Nikki do bond over some musicals that they both enjoy, although Nikki is usually more interested in the violent parts than the actual plot.

Rudolph “Dolph” Houston : Dolph is the youngest of the cast and the only underclassmen in their friend group. Dolph continues to remain in high spirits and prefers to think positively than reflect upon the negative when faced with difficult situations. After High school, Dolph plans on attending a local Art College in order to truly embrace his career as a professional artist. Growing older, Dolph, like any other boy, went through puberty and grew facial hair. However, he ended up accidentally shaving it in an incident at Camp Campbell one summer and it never grew up correctly after that. Although an innocent mistake, the uncanny resemblance to Hitler disgusts Neil and causes him to keep his distance. Ironically being the youngest of the group, Dolph is a good friend with sole senior Ered. Dolph, like Nikki, has a great admiration for Ered and respects for activism. Using his artistic talent, Dolph often agrees to make protest signs for Ered or even help her vandalize the town to get a message across. Overall, Dolph is the same sweet boy he was years ago.

Neil Armstrong Jr./Space Kid : Space Kid is just as optimistic and upbeat as he was before. However, he’s also gotten a lot smarter. Inspired by his great grandfather, Neil Armstrong, Space Kid decided to take up an internship at NASA and since then has put a lot of focus on his grades. Much to Neil’s annoyance, Space Kid’s GPA is practically the same as his, which is impressive. Although, the constant work has taken a toll on him and has made him absolutely exhausted. His exhaustion explains why he comes to school dressed comfortably in pajama pants (NASA merch of course TM) everyday. But regardless of overworking himself, Space Kid still tries his best to put on a happy face for his colleagues, even if they don’t appreciate it.

Harrison : Exerting the same confidence and pride as before while still upholding his magical title, Harrison is the school’s sole illusionist. Although now his tricks aren’t seen as that impressive anymore among his peers, Harrison often attends parties and other small events and shows off his miraculous talent. He hopes that one day he’ll be discovered and whisked away to a life of fame and fortune. Harrison is kind to practically everyone he meets, but his rivalries with Neil and Nerris remain very alive. As a way to annoy Neil, Harrison often lies and says that he’s a Flat-Earther with no intention of listening to Neil’s explanation as to why the Earth is round. Harrison also rivals Nerris not only in magical skills, but also in opinions. As a die hard Harry Potter fan, Nerris had solely read the books and reluctantly turned to the films but found them to be distasteful. However, Harrison had never read the books and enjoyed the effects that the movies had, claiming that they’re superior. And by saying this, the two renew their fierce opposition to each other, but no one can stay mad at each other forever. Having a mostly positive attitude, many might not believe that Harrison actually has a secret, one that lies beneath his iconic white gloves. But it’s too soon to know for sure what it is yet.

Gaylord “Nurf” Nurfington : Nurf ended up growing into a model citizen. After many anger management classes and corrective punishment, Nurf has finally turned his life around in the right direction. He and his mom currently live together and support each other, trying to rewrite their bad decisions from the past. Nurf often participates in volunteer work as well as lead a therapy group. He has also experiemnted more with his own identity and is comfortable admitting that he is in fact Bisexual. Nurf is also Quarterback for the school’s team and is known as one of their best players, alongside Nikki. Even though he is on his way to becoming an ideal person, Nurf still displays some aggressive tendencies and is very overprotective of his friends from Camp Campbell.

The Wood Scouts (Billy “Snake” Nikssilp/Edward Pikeman/Jermy Fartz/Stephen van Petrol) : The Wood Scouts don’t play a particularly large role in this AU, but they still exist in this universe. Edward’s leader status has deteriorated in the group and has become co-dependent on Jermy and his newfound popularity. Jermy had gotten a major glow-up over the last Summer and is now considered to be the hottest guy attending the school. Because of his popularity, Edward now clings to Jermy in a one-sided friendship and uses his popularity as a way to elevate his own confidence (he wants clouts lmao).Snake and Petrol have both noticed this behavior from Edward and are disgusted by his attachment to Jermy. Edward often neglects his friendship with the two and refuses to associate with them. Snake still has a small crush on Tabii, but understands that she is completely invested in Neil and wants what’s best for her. Petrol plans to enroll in the military after graduation. He also struggles to find shirts that fit him.

David & Gwen : Here they are! In all of their glory! Unfortunately this time around, David and Gwen don’t play as large of a role in the campers’ lives, but are still actively present in this AU. Summers back, David had fully encouraged Gwen to leave Camp Campbell in search for other job opportunities in the hopes of making her a happier person. With some persuading, she eventually left and the two had little contact with each other since. Since then, David has been running the camp by himself. Now David is the proud father of one. And that one is Max. David had officially adopted Max a few summers ago to help him out of his bad family situation and now lives his life as a proud suburban dad. David then started to rely on Max to help him co-counsel the Camp during the summer, because he though it’d be a great father/son bonding experience and the rest is history. When he’s not a happy-go-lucky camp counselor during the summer, David spends the rest of his time as a Dental Assistant because he loves nothing more than to see people smile. Gwen, however, didn’t find the happiness she thought she would after leaving Camp Campbell. Searching for jobs endlessly, Gwen eventually was hired as a high school guidance counselor but was fired months after because of a incident where she made a student cry hysterically. Gwen was then stripped of her title and sentenced to a secretary position. Although thankful she still has a job, Gwen is as miserable as ever and has to deal with the kids she once knew from Camp Campbell. Most of her time is spent with Max, purely because he’s given a detention every other day, and she couldn’t hate her life more. Hopefully one day Gwen will find the fortune she deserves.

What are your thoughts on Charlottesville? I've heard a lot of conflicting stories and am kinda lost on what to believe about it

Hi :) A little group of alt-right idiots gathered last year and it’s now all the evidence we need to prove that America is overrun with Nazis and it’s all thanks to our Hitler president. But what most deliberately leave out is they weren’t the only people there. The whole point of the first rally was to protest the removal of a monument. They wanted the story to be this: Everyone there opposed to tearing down the monument were literal Nazis so the violent attacks on anyone in a MAGA hat is justified. Brian Fallon and Chris Cuomo even compared Antifa macing people and throwing bricks and cherry bombs to the brave Americans soldiers who stormed Normandy to fight Nazis on D-Day. Find me a single person on the right, any conservative who hasn’t condemned and disavowed the racists who attended the protest. To lump anyone against tearing down the monuments in with the faction of white supremacists is why so many melted down when Trump said there were fine people on both sides. They became even more hysterical when Trump said both sides engaged in violence.

CNN cried in enormous font on its front page “He still blames both sides!” The New York Times blared that Trump “again blames both sides.” So did the Chicago Tribune. So did NBC News. So did U.S. News while calling Trump insane. So did NPR. So did CBS News. So did the Washington Post. So did the Wall Street Journal. So did Time. So did MSNBC. NBC News later wondered: “Has Trump Lost His Moral Authority for Good?” CNN continued with the massive headlines, calling Trump’s press conference “a meltdown for the ages,” and declared: “Trump is who we feared he was” and “Donald Trump’s presidency is headed to a very dark place.” Vox claimed Trump “is offering comfort to racists and extremists.” The president has become “completely unhinged” Jimmy Kimmel told his viewers afterwards. He had just canceled all their scheduled programming to focus on the president “finally showing the world the racist he is.” This is a day after Jimmy Fallon did basically the same thing and asked America how to “explain this to his daughters.” The Atlantic wrote “Trump Defends White-Nationalist Protesters.” Kat Timpf was on the verge of tears as she stressed, “I’m wondering if it was real life.“

It’s funny how they all failed to leave these words by Trump out: “Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans. Those who spread violence in the name of bigotry strike at the very core of America. We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence. The driver of the car is a disgrace to himself, his family and this country. You can call it terrorism. The driver of the car is a murderer. What he did was a horrible, horrible, inexcusable thing.” So this is proof he’s a racist who offers comfort to racists and extremists? Just because he didn’t turn what happened into a racebating lecture to all white people about the dangers of their whiteness as the left insisted him to, it doesn’t mean that he failed to condemn racism and it sure as hell doesn’t mean that he supports it. The left went into meltdown mode because he told the truth of what happened in Charlottesville.

We are supposed to see it as outrageous and morally abhorrent that Trump would claim that “there is blame on both sides.” The thing is, Trump was telling the truth. The violence that occurred throughout the downtown area was committed by both sides. Even the Charlottesville police chief affirmed that the protest saw mutually combative individuals on both sides. Is the black police chief a racist guilty of comforting extremists as well? It is not unreasonable to blame “both sides” that day. Yes there were some people there who we have every reason to hate, but the left-wing protesters had zero intentions of a peaceful counter-protest of “passive resistance,” they didn’t show up to practice civil rights-style non-violent activism. They were armed, they had fighting and violence on their mind and there is unequivocal testimony and footage proving that they committed widespread unprovoked violence that day.

Refuse Fascism was among the left-wing groups at the Charlottesville rally and urged violence against the Trump supporters there. Another anarchist group that was there, CrimethInc, said “We must identify the forces underlying their laws and their order. Patriarchy, policing, capitalism, and the state. We have to work together to reimagine the world without them. We need to make this country ungovernable.” They declared “We need to do what the German people should have done when Hitler was elected.” Another far-left group there was the Workers World Party, a group of marxists who have declared their support for Kim Jong Un’s dictatorship in North Korea and have has consistently published propaganda-like screeds supporting Venezuela’s regime. The communist group “sent many of its members to beat up those who marched there.” The same group took credit for organizing the vandals who toppled a city-owned Confederate statue in Durham, North Carolina a week earlier.

These are the nutjobs, along with hoards of Antifa, who are defended and honored as the anti-racist heroes. We can make a point of condemning the alt-right without justifying the continuous violence and rioting of ISIS-wanna-be thugs. By equating them to the Americans of D-Day or saying they just “stand up to hate,” all we’re doing is green-lighting more political violence under the disguise of tolerance and love. We need to condemn all political violence, the extreme ends of both sides are just as repulsive and dangerous as each other. We can all agree that the racists who attended were bad people who deserved to be counter-protested. The one moron carrying a Nazi flag deserved to be yelled at. But why did the counter-protesters start such raging violence against everyone there? Why did they start to block, swarm and beat on cars driving by? The tragic outcome wouldn’t have happened if a few racists didn’t show up, that’s very true. But it’s also true it wouldn’t have happened if the left-wing mobs didn’t turn the event into a massive violent, chaotic battle zone.

Even after the tragedy of last year, a few days ago the mobs still thought it was a good idea this time around to again swarm cars and threaten drivers. The town went into lockdown for its anniversary and in the days beforehand, according to Charlottesville’s Daily Progress, “reports surfaced from concerned citizens believed they saw persons resembling Nazis and white supremacists in locations from office supply stores to coffee shops.” Did you see how many people showed up for the rally? About eight. It’s funny how little Nazis there are when you don’t include every American who supports Trump or is opposed to tearing down all our Civil War monuments.

Projecting support of Nazis onto a person who you disagree with to force them to defend themselves, prove they’re not a Nazi sympathizer and disavow an already globally disavowed and despised group is a sneaky leftist tactic that is used against everyone from the president to any conservative with a voice. The groupthink of the left is if you believe someone is a Nazi, aka, someone you don’t like, it’s totally cool to just beat them up and it will be glorified by the liberal media as “fighting racism.” Conservatives are accused of violence for merely speaking, yet when there’s actual real violence right in front of us, we get silence because it’s not from the right people. Just as there’s been total silence on every left-wing riot over the past two years.

We’re all supposed to pretend Trump said something racist after Charlottesville. He spoke out against racism, he blasted the alt-right for their role in the violence and he warned against all political violence. If it were just an average person saying what Trump said, we’d all say ‘duh.’ There’s nothing controversial about what he said, only the fact that it came from a guy who people are so desperate to delegitimize and call a white supremacist. Now Charlottesville is used to shame and silence anyone on the right as evidence of what conservative ideals and policies lead to, just as they use the myth of “caged kids” to turn as many people as they can away from voting Republican again. That’s just my take, obviously there were racists there, but like it or not they did have a permit to be there, and most people clearly had nothing to do with these few idiots and were only there to oppose the statue from being torn down. The narrative that everyone not on Antifa’s side were Nazis and were the ones to spark the violence is a deliberate lie to hold conservatives accountable for the actions of one criminal. Man, that last run was a bitch.

Discouraged and ashamed mainly cuz the dope man wouldn’t front me shit.

Then I head to the cross roads, damn, another fork in the road I’m a prince but the only friends I had were Frog and Toad.

Time to make a decision, so I just go enter the building. I see a bunch of women with concerned and caring countenances and faces as I sit in the lobby waiting, wondering what kind of place this is.

Mascots for Systemic Sin

Harold Chandler was one of eight kids who all went to Circle High School in the seventies and eighties. He was the youngest one of the brood. The Chandlers named all of their children in alphabetical order—A through H—with Harold being the last.

They were dirt poor. When we think of dirt poor, this is the family that fits that particular bill of goods. The home was not a place large enough for such an expansive group. As I recall, they used well water so Harold, who was in my class, rarely came to school bathed. They didn't have electricity (I found that out because his older sister, Glynis, invited me to her senior prom my sophomore year).

We treated Harold like shit. Not so much a situation of active bullying but there was no question he was shunned by most kids in school. His oldest brother, Bryan, was a source of legendary thuggery. The stories were that he was a petty thief and was expelled for it his junior year.

So when someone broke into the office after hours and stole money and vandalized the place, Harold was the almost automatic scapegoat for the crime. Not that he had ever given anyone a reason to suspect that he was a thief but that he was from a family of thieves because they were poor (dirt poor) and his oldest brother was a known criminal.

I don't think they ever proved who did the deed—hell, maybe Harold had committed the crime—but in recollection, the only reason he was accused was that he was a stereotypical kid from the wrong side of the tracks.

Patrisse Khan-Cullors co-founded the Black Lives Matter movement with Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi in 2013. Recently it was uncovered that Khan-Cullors managed to amass millions of dollars and purchased extravagant homes all while professing her belief in Marxism.

After news of Khan-Cullors luxury living hit the press, other members of the Black Lives Matter organization called for an investigation. “If you go around calling yourself a socialist, you have to ask how much of her own personal money is going to charitable causes,” said Hawk Newsome, the head of Black Lives Matter Greater New York City. “It’s really sad because it makes people doubt the validity of the movement and overlook the fact that it’s the people that carry this movement.”

The current conservative spin is exactly that. Because Khan-Cullor seems to be nothing more than your standard race grifter, she becomes a scapegoat for the most progressive civil rights movement in sixty years. For half the country's population, her financial indiscretions paint the entire movement as suspect. She becomes a negative representative of an organization comprised of few who could afford four or five multi-million dollar homes.

The word “scapegoating” originated from an ingenious ritual described in Leviticus 16.

According to Jewish law, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest laid hands on an “escaping” goat, placing all the sins of the Jewish people from the previous year onto the animal.

Then the goat was beaten with reeds and thorns, driven out into the desert, and the people went home rejoicing.

Violence towards the innocent victim was apparently quite effective at temporarily relieving the group’s guilt and shame.

The reverse of this ritual is now in play. Instead of the goat taking on the sins of the tribe, the tribe takes upon the sins of the goat.

The incompetent, brutal, and bigoted police officer paints the entire 900,000 American law enforcement community as incompetent, brutal, and bigoted.

The looters using an otherwise peaceful protest as cover to rip-off a Target for a plasma screen gives permission to those disinclined to agree with the protest to dismiss the cause.

The rich and powerful Hollywood rapist convicts all rich and powerful Hollywood types as rapists.

It's a strange twist on the form but it isn't entirely unexpected. We aren't looking at individuals and their behavior today as much as we are why the systems in place allow (or at least refuse to stem) the behavior of the worst among us. Each individual anecdote about someone's lived experience becomes a puzzle piece to reduce whole institutions and practices as evil. As it is the opposite of scapegoating, I'll call it mascoting.

Instead of seeing these mascots as outliers, their mere existence is used to suggest widespread corruption. Each mascot becomes a sole representative of a greater ill.

Adolf Hitler is a mascot for any leader who is racially intolerant and authoritarian. Any leader who seems too ambitious, too angry, too dictatorial inevitably evokes the comparison.

The mascot for #MeToo is, without question, Weinstein. The big, fuzzy, unattractive über-powerful Hollywood mogul who solicited blowjobs, spanked his junk into plants, and raped Annabella Sciorra is the poster boy for all aging white men in charge of the entertainment industry.

AOC is mascot for the Socialists in government. Ibram Kendi is the mascot for the Critical Race Theorists. Tucker Carlson is dressed to the nines as avatar for all that is bad at Fox. Kristen Sinema (AZ) is the picture of fence-riding, anti-minimum wage Democratic obstructionists. Derek Chauvin represents all white cops. George Floyd fronts for all black men.

Ah, if life were so simple and easy to categorize. The fact that this reduction of systems to the behavior of individuals is pockmarked with error, replete with misrepresentation, and in direct conflict with the bizarre nature of human beings doesn't stop us. We do it anyway.

Maybe if we focused on positive mascots? Tom Hanks as mascot for white dudes? John McWhorter as the de-facto black guy stand-in? Eric Talley adumbrates all police officers and Kevin Feige epitomizes the wealthy, powerful Hollywood executive?

Harold Chandler was certainly a part of his family but was nothing like his sister and it was unfair to judge him based upon the actions of a brother he was unlikely to know well combined with the poverty he was born into and had no choice in. He was more complex than that. His poverty and the fact that he was outcast doesn't make him a saint but it doesn't make him the mascot of sinners, either.

As Russian philosopher Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, “If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.”
