It's wild to me how ridiculously expensive it is to live in the US on your own. You have to have a roommate or a live-in partner to split bills (both of which I've tried and it always ends terribly). The only way you can live on your own and not live paycheck to paycheck is if you have a high paying job. And those don't hire often, and when they do, they're super picky.
Not to mention even getting a job that isn't retail-based is its own form of Hell. Between recruiters/companies ghosting job applicants, AI resume picking bots trained to toss out "ethnic" sounding names and cherry picking keywords, & redundant application processes (you apply on LinkedIn, only to be redirected to another website to submit your resume, only to find out that you still have to manually input your entire resume), what are we supposed to do? How is anyone supposed to survive like this?

hello! longtime lurker, first time asker. I just graduated college this spring and am looking for jobs. My dad grew up really poor but is much better off now, but he keeps telling me that the jobs I'm looking for/getting aren't paying me enough to live & save & save for retirement. what kind of salary should I be looking for immediately after college? are most people able to save extra right away or do most people need to go to more school before getting paid a more "comfortable" amount?
Woof. Ok honey, this is a heavy question.
Your dad is likely speaking from experience. It sounds like he struggled financially when he was young, and he wants you to have an easier time. That's a beautiful sentiment, and it clearly comes from love. But if he's not giving you more guidance than "that's not enough," then it's slightly unhelpful.
You need an income, full stop. Cover your expenses right fucking now, even if it's one of those jobs your dad thinks won't pay enough. While you're working that job, do some research on the following:
What's the cost of living where you want to live? How much does housing, transportation, and food cost?
What's the cost of your necessities outside of those big three? Do you have expensive medical needs? Are you supporting any family members or pets? What about your insurance?
How big of an emergency fund do you need? We talk about how to calculate this here: You Must Be This Big to Be an Emergency Fund
Once you've got that figured out, you'll know the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM you need to survive. This number is different for everyone, and you have to determine it for yourself. (Which is why I'm not giving you a definitive number.) Next, answer these questions:
When you think about your career, what do you want it to look like? What do you see yourself doing day by day? What tasks do you perform? What sort of people do you work with? What hours do you work?
What sort of jobs, education, and experience do you need to get to the sort of career you want? In some cases, you might indeed need more education. In other cases, there's a clear ladder from entry level to ideal job. Again, it's all based on YOU.
Based on that, look at the starting salaries for the sorts of jobs you want. Ideally, this will be more than the money you need as determined in the first exercise. This is the minimum you should expect. We talk about how to determine salaries here: When It Comes to Salary Negotiations, Are You Asking for Enough?
This process is a lot of research and work. Don't be scared, though. Once you start looking into the numbers, you'll feel a lot better and more certain about your future.
And of course, check out our other resources for more advice and come back to share your success!

Moving Expenses/Temporary Housing
hi uhh it's me, nanite, and i've been trying to avoid making a post abt this for awhile but i'm a transmasc lesbian moving from alabama to the new england to live with my partner (and help them move out as well) at the beginning of next month (june 2022) and all has been going relatively smoothly until pretty recently. I've been approved to live in some temp housing apartments since February, but recently the landlady I've been speaking to told me she doesn't have the vacancy for me, despite saying she would around this time. The issue is that I've already signed that I'm leaving my current apartment in alabama and that i will not be renewing my lease. So, as of right now (5/5/2022), if the landlady can't get back to me with a place to stay by June, I will have no place to live. I will hopefully only need a place until she has something for me, since I've already been approved, so maybe about a month? i hope? It's all really uncertain right now, and while I've been saving up for the move as best I can, I couldnt have predicted this roadblock so late into the moving process. It's scary but I'm trying to remain optimistic. I don't know anyone that'll take me in (especially since I have an indoor cat as well) and I've tried contacting everyone I know with no luck. I'm looking at Airbnb options, but it'll be a bit costly. If anyone has any resources they want to share as far as cheap temporary housing in north-ish connecticut is concerned, I am all ears; please please shoot me a DM if you know something or someone that could help me out !! Here's my donation links !! I also do Commissions if you really want some art, however with things being as crazy as they are rn, and my days off spent packing and prepping, I might be a bit slow on the artwork, so pls be patient with me. huge thanks to anyone able to spread this or help in whatever way they can ✨❤

woke up and someone spilled vanilla extract all over my dash, so as punishment you strange little beasties are getting all the VANILLA FACTS i know:
vanilla is the 2nd most expensive spice in the world (2nd to saffron)
which is why more than 99% of what we call "vanilla extract" is actually vanillin (vanilla's dominant flavor compound) and is not extracted from real vanilla.
luckily, even professionals struggle to tell the difference when it comes to things like baked goods. but there is a distinct difference in non-heat treated products like vanilla ice cream. real vanilla has a more complex, individualized flavor profile.
why is vanilla so expensive? because it is a ridiculously delicate & demanding crop. complete primadonna.
vanilla beans come from vanilla orchids. these crazy flowers bloom for A SINGLE DAY and have to be HAND-POLLINATED in a process that is exhausting, delicate, and requires specialist knowledge passed down over generations.
then, if you're lucky, you get vanilla beans.
which then require months of further specialized treatment.
the entire process takes about a year and can go wrong at any stage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
vanilla has been cultivated for over 800 years (possibly much longer). the first known cultivators are the Totonac, an indigenous people of Mexico.
the Aztecs used it as a sweetener to balance out the bitter taste of cocoa. it was popular in a drink called xocolatl--the precursor to modern hot chocolate!
it is only pollinated by a very specific orchid bee!!!
which is why no fruit could be grown outside of Mexico until the 1800s
Edmond Albius, born into slavery, invented the pollination method we still use today--launching a global industry when he was just 12 years old.
today, the majority of the world's vanilla is grown in Madagascar
if you want real vanilla, read the labels carefully--it's harder to find than you think!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in conclusion, those tiny black specks you see in fancy vanilla ice cream? those are vanilla bean seeds! itty bitty orchid seeds!!! they are delicious and also a PRISSY BITCH!
